I'm gonna be using this thread to post my ongoing conversions for my Stormtrooper heavy Daemonhunter army. I really like the Kasrkin models and have foregone adding basic gk marines as troops in favour of a ton of ISTs unfortunately this means that the retinue for my inquisitor sticks out like a sore thumb so I have decided to convert some of my spare Kasrkins into "counts as" gun servitors and acolytes. CC is very welcome.
and if you want to check out my whole army

With cloak...
This is a great looking army, I'm amazed how much more I like Telion in your army, with the no nonsense colour scheme and the icons taken off.
It all comes together well, grats.

FrantzFanon : Yeah i know, the cherubs just seem a little, i don't know, ladylike? hence me asking around before i pin and glue it on for good
thought i would post up pics of a real lady
I converted this celestine before I had decided which inquisition to go with, witchhunters or daemonhunters, and because the model rocks!
I had just finished converting my flatmates celestine to have pegasus wings and a classic white and gold paint scheme and i really needed to rebel with a completely opposite version. The wings and lower base are from the warhammer carrion model with a bit of greenstuff to extend the scrolls hanging from her legs, again a pretty simple conversion.

i definitely like Telion more than i thought i would. While the inquisitior definitely works with the cloak, i dislike the celestine conversion. the wings seem too nurgley IMHO.

Here are some WIP shots of my stormtrooper banner bearer, i'm gonna run him as a "counts as" acolyte but he's pretty much there just to add fluff to the retinue
the shape made of greenstuff on the banner is Inquisitor Frosts sigil, the Black Hand from which the Stormtroopers in his private army take their name.

Thanks everyone for the feedback
@adrastos - No worries steal away... I still can't believe that gw hasn't made an model for what is obviously the most popular build of Inquisitor there is. Good thing about the termie librarian model was how easy it was to snip off the bits i didn't want and glue on the GK psycannon, plus you are left with a cool grimoire thingie to put on a tank or something.
It seems like everyone likes the Telion model so when i get some time i will post up some better pics for you all

Hello all, sorry for the lag between posts. It's been the usual good news bad news. First I managed to slip and fall down some stairs while carrying my laptop (saved the laptop at the expense of my back and head) good news is that has given me some spare time to get started on the inducted IG platoon I decided to add to my DH army. These guys are gonna be painted up in the same colours as my Stormtroopers to show they are part of Inquisitor Frost's private army. To start with i picked up a cadian battleforce box which gave me all the models I needed but I felt it just wasn't enough so I ordered 40 of the Pig Iron Productions Kolony Militia heads and some of their backpacks to spread amongst the troopers. Unfortunately the heads are still on their way so i have had to make do just sorting out unit structure etc.
just to prove i am still doing something...
and a close up of my Platoon Commander, havn't thought up a name yet

Impressive thus far I assume you are using what you have yes???.
As that metal Cadian standard Bearer has never really pushed my buttons.I use two plastic Cadian and Catachan standards now for my Penal Legion looks much better and much more dynamic.
But good army thus far..

I like the Celestine Model. I always got the fealing that those who spend thier life hunting the beast tend to take on traits of the beast, thus she may be a little tainted.
It is a very interesting idea how you used the Cloak and Cherub's. I have a Celstine Model that I converted to my Slaanesh Sorcerer and I didn't use the cloak, may have to keep that round for a conversion attempt myself.

@boss_pimpalotz, I don't mind the metal standard bearer too much and my freind had one lying around to convert anyway, that said now that i have some plastic cadians I am itching to convert some to stormtroopers!
@norwolf , yeah my painting skills are not incredible , I tend to slap on a few coats and once it's presentable I move on to the next model, i will have to get serious with washes at some point to sharpen them up.
@spooner6 , I found it interesting in the fluff for celestine she came back as this flying saint thingy and then was killed again. So I figured I would model her second incarnation as an undead angel with rotten flesh and blackened armour, plus it pissed off my flatemate who like it more than his gold and white angelic celestine , haha

Post by: Norwulf
@blackhand: yeah my painting skills are mediocre at best, I think yours are good though. IDK if you took that the wrong way or not. I have yet to try washes really. Most of the paint i use is from walmart or pilfered from my mom. I would hope that I can one day find a job (friggan recession) and buy some matierals to do some basing, washes, etc. But yeah dont get me wrong, your painting is good. I'm looking forward to seeing your future work.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
no probs Norwulf didn't take it bad I just put my work up against the other stuff I see on dakka and know I have a bit to go before I will be satisfied. As for washes I do it on the cheap by taking and old pot of chaos black that's almost all gone and fill it with water, shake it round and you have a wash! And a while back our local council made up some gardens with scoria (volcanisc rock) and a weird gritty sand which was great, all I had to do was fill a plastic bag with sand and rocks and I haven't had to buy basing materials for a couple of years, hell if my fiance knew I paid money for little rocks to go on my models my life wouldn't be worth living! Like the army, are you going to include deamonhosts?
If not include grey gnights as both give you a good advantage in battles.

I'm not too keen on daemonhosts so I'm going for greyknights. At the moment I'm running 30 or so IST for troops and a squad of GKT running 2 psycannon for counter assault and a heavy firebase.

I think you can put a psycannon on one of the GKTs and then the brother captain can take one from the wargear section. So two is okay.

Yep.
One in the squad, then give one to the BC.

Thats how I read the codex as well, how suck would it be if you could only take one psycannon in the squad that it does best in.
Nothing like walking your termies across the table and reaching out and slapping down models 36 inches away at the same time.

I like it I think it's an awsome idea to do the army. Definatly gives off the feel of the Inquisitor taking over an army for his or her own purpose. Also the paint job makes them look like they are fighting the demonic. Not sure if you were trying to head that route but it worked either or.

Great job on the conversion and Telion looks great. have you ever consider an vindicare assassin for your army? he works well in my list. and also, i feel that while your inquisitor looks great, one of the empire warrior priests would fit in to the army better. more... archaic and wizened i guess.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
I have a vindicare but he seems expensive for the amount of wounds he can possibly throw out in a game, for the same price I can field a 10 man squad of ISTs that are a scoring unit.
As for the Inquisitor I have Solomon Lok from FW which kind of covers any kind of "old man" type look I want but he just cant carry a psycannon and it seems crazy to run an Inquisitor Lord with such a high BS and only give him a bolt pistol .
I like to think that Inquisitors Lords get to the same ages as space marine lords (hundreds of years old) and end up needing bionics and power armour to keep battling on anyway

Sorry for the long silence readers, I was preparing for my first tournament which was sprung on me at the last moment. In order to have enough teams for a doubles tournament my club was holding I was roped into playing with a 13 year old kid and between us we managed to feild the most ridiculously expensive and model poor list at the event and collect the least battle points. Despite the asskicking we did average in the painting (his models were halfpainted two colour ultramarines which dropped us a bit) but second in players choice which shows we still had fun despite everyting. The entire thing taught me a lot and look forward to seeing my army change a LOT in the next few months, i.e. smaller units , more mech and probably some pagk for a bit of backbone in my trrops. As well as the inquisition troops my latest aquisition is a leman russ for my inducted imperial guard platoon which i hope to paint up soon

And I'm back! I have no real excuse for not updating for a so long except my evil friends introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons Online which has swallowed large portions of my life, damn them! Happily i have had a few weeks of holiday over christmas and decided to make a concerted effort to finish my inducted guard platoon and rebuild my army list according to lessons learnt while playing the very few games of 40k I have managed to squeeze in. Once again damn D&D online and all my friends. Thought I would show some of the painting I have finished to table standard. first off is my Platoon Command Squad, some of which I have already shown you My first 10 man squad and my second squad the heavy weapons squad attached the platoon and the armoured sentinel which I am not sure I will use but came in the army box I also managed to pick up a cheap Leman Russ to add a bit of long range firepower for the platoon and I am finding I am quite jealous of other players laying down pie plates on my troops so I wanted to do the same I also added some final touches to my Inquisitorial Dreadnaught, mainly the book thing that comes with the space marine librarian in termie armour, I feel it looks more proportionate on a dread anyway And to finish up I converted my second heavy bolter stormtrooper for my inquisitor squad which has moved from a HQ to an Elites slot due to the limited use I could put the termie innquisitor lord to. He has subsequently morphed from an Inq Lord to a Brother-Captain Hero which joins my GK Termies meaning they are now a 6 man termie squad with two Brother-Captains and three psycannon, very fun. cheers BLACKHAND

@ cosmic pixie - They have done alright so far in the two games I have played them in. The first match up was against chaos space marines played by a local 40k guru, my lascannons took out all three of his defilers early on but I had no answer for his raging demon prince. Second game was against imperial guard and I managed to win that one as he nothing to stop to my gk terminators in their crusader. Im finding the mix of guard for shootin and gk for misdirection and assaulting is working so far but there is always room for improvement. @morgrim & binky - Yeah the celestine is pretty, its like they made the wings on the wfb carrion just for the conversion. A friend of mine is trying to get me to run it as a deamon prince in a chaos army. cheers BLACKHAND

Havn't had a chance to get any painting on my army done this week as I have been painting a space marine army for our local gaming club for use by the one warhammer player we have (we are trying to convert him to 40k) In the meantime I have been researching ideas for a small roughrider unit and having read and enjoyed the book "leviathan" by scott westerfield I am thinking of using a mech design from the book. The premise of the book is an alternate world war 1 with england, france and russia using massive engineered creatures as warmachines and austria , germany and the ottoman empire using mech walkers in battle. What really brings the book to life is the illustrations which are amazingly detailed and creative. They include a one-man recon vehicle resembling a headless horse which fires phosphorous mortars that nearby artillary use to find targets. I found a pic online here http://cache-03.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/8/2009/09/500x_levthn.jpg I'm hoping to model a prototype walker, make a rubber mold and pour resin copies to get a uniform look across the whole unit and end up with a sturdier model then if I build them all out of bitz. Unfortunately I am having trouble sourcing the latex rubber and resin compounds as our local hobby store no longer sells them but I hope to order some online in the next few weeks. I'll keep you updated on progress and take lots of pics for a tutorial on the mold making and pouring. cheers BLACKHAND

Maybe I am crazy, but in an environment that requires Gas Masks, would they not be also wearing some gloves?
Also, I loved "Leviathan", too. That map at the front was crazy stuff and the book wasn't half bad considering it was for young adults.
Good luck with the scout walkers! I will keep an eye on this thread and see how they turn out.

@em_en_oh_pee s - I have considered the glove issue but the thought of adding greenstuff to the cuffs of nearly forty guard seems like a mammoth task. That said I wanted to show that my guard could go anywhere and fight in any environment (hence the backpacks full of gear and the gas masks) What do you think, could I simply paint the hands to identify them as gloves or do I need to go the greenstuff route? cheers BLACKHAND

Yea, you could just paint the hands. It would be much as though they were wearing a biohazard suit underneath their uniform, which is pretty realistic.

@em-en-oh-pee - I'll have to look at painting the gloves on , will see how black with a drybrush of codex grey though I'm thinking of modelling gloves on hte rough riders im gonna do to see how they come out and if it will be worth doing the whole platoon.
@physcosamatic - To begin with I was running my inq lord with termie armour , psycannon and psycic hood and a group of henchmen. But lately I've found that switching him to a gk brother captain with psycannon and psychic hood costs less and has the ability to assault especially when you add him to a group of gk termies and throw him in a crusader. Inquisitors, even lords just arent tough enough to stand toe to toe with a lot of the things you will run into.
@happygrunt - Yeah they are pig iron heads I really like them though this is one of their simplest designs. I also got a couple of sets of their backpacks which look pretty cool. the problem is the heads come in packs of 10 while the backpacks are in packs of 8 meaning I had to build a few out of bitz and greenstuff
Cheers again for all the comments

Aaaand I'm back! Now that I'm on the closing stretch of Tervigon build I have had the chance to play around with my Inquisitorial army, touching up a few models and making what I think is a cool little conversion inspired by Archibald Jack's fantastic tutorial that you can find here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/280841.page and you can find my ripoff of his fantastic tutorial here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/282539.page So onto the pics First up is an Inquisitor I've been slowly finishing, the last piece I needed was a black templar power sword to replace the one that comes with the figure Next is my new Commissar for my inducted IG platoon, If you don't know the model you must have been living under a rock for years, what you may not know is that if you drop him from any kind of height his power sword will snap off like it's made of ice :( Hence his new kit out with a powerfist, gotta love that IG command sprue! And last is my brand new sniper, unusable in my DH list as I don't have an IG regimental command that can take carapace armour but I plan on running him in a Guard list I have been working on. As usual my pics ( despite using 3 light sources) have messed up the colours and detail of my models but having seen how easy it is to build a lightbox I have decided it is my next projsect. So ever since the new skaven models came out last year I have had the urge to build a skaven "counts as" IG army (horde army with low armour) to this end I even bought one of their character models, Queek Headtaker. I have since come to my senses and realised how much it would cost to buy basically an entire skaven force AND the parts to convert them to 40k, probably a s**tload of kroot parts. I then had vague thoughts of doing queek up as a death cult assasin for my DH but he got shelved in favour of other projects. Lately though I have been enjoying reading archibald jack's and Acidwap's blogs about their necromunda gangs http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/279777.page http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/283412.page thanks to these blogs I am now keeping in mind Necromunda when converting and painting my guard and GK....dont worry I am going somewhere with this. The last peice of the puzzle is Korf's awesome rogue trader gang here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/284914.page seeing his gang full of kroot and scratchbuilt xenos made me dust off the queek model and get convertin! Though I do have thoughts of using him in necromunda at the moment I don't have anyone to play with so I have armed him as a "counts as" marbo for use in my Guard army or a henchman in my DH. anyway on to the pics So obviously I carved of the chaos symbols his head crest , trophy rack and the swarm of rats at his feet. I swapped his warpick out for a ork slugga to represent marbo's ripper gun but left his original sword cause..well cause its cool. I think marbo's rules work with him quite well, poisonous blades, venomous bullets, hiding and skulking, hitting and then running general rat-like behaviour...course I now have to convince my guard and DH to accept a filthy xenos into their ranks..... ....speaking of my guard I have written up a IG list with little or no inquisitors or GK and am using my inquisitorial stormtroopers as elite guard stormtroopers (obviously) and in my regimental command squad. Unfortunately ther is no place for a single model heavy bolter in a guard army so I decided to make a large base that can accept smaller bases on it so that I can use my heavy bolter trooper and here it is... C&C welcome as always! Cheers BLACKHAND

@anung un rama - I know its orky but I thought a ripper gun wouls be chunkier than a bolter for some reason, happily when I cut the axe off his hand I left a stub that fitted into the slugga so I can replace it with something else quite easily.

Ok a bit of background for my next conversion. The town where I live has only one model shop and the owner only ever buys in the same basic stock month after month which drives us crazy. This week I had to go to our largest city for business and was able to sneak away early and visit the closest GW store not looking for anything in particular but definitely wanting to buy something!
As GW no longer stock Stormtrooper special weapons I bought a blister of Cadian special weapons intending to add some GS carapace armour and use them in my stormtrooper squads, pics when I get to them.
I still felt the itch to buy lead ( you all know what I mean ) and as I looked around I remembered a thread I read the other day about the idea of GK librarians and chaplains. While I agreed with the comments that even the lowest Power Armoured GK is the equal of any marine librarian ( minus 95% of the coolest power !) I felt that there was no reason that GK don't deserve their own chaplains and so I bought the awesome Marine Chaplain in Terminator armour!.
Happily I have some extra GK termie arms left lyng around and I after a bit of chopping and grinding I had a loose shoulder pad and a chaplain arm with no shoulderpad as in these pics....
Don't worry I plan to use the incinirator on my dreadnaught CCW anyhow after a bunch of greenstuffing and pinning I had a workable arm...
I realise that I won't be able to use him as a chaplain and will just run him as a vanilla GK termie but who knows maybe GW will add some flavour units to the incredibly bland stew that is the Grey Knights?
C&C is welcome as I feel he needs more but am not sure where to go with him , my main issue is that his stormbolter is different to the normal GK wrist mounted one but I could probably live with it, another issue is the shoulder pad on the right arm didn't cast well and looks a bt munched and I am thinking of carving off the entire rim this will also make it roughly the same size as the GK shoulderpad on the left arm as well, what do you think?
Cheers

So I had a spare couple of hours while my fiance watches desperate housewives ( thank christ for that program or I would never get any painting time!) and I made a start to my Termie Chaplain. I decided to go with a classic scheme with more muted gunmetal then gold to tie it closer to the GK that he'll me rollin with. I havn't decided yet whether I will paint his whole left arm gunmetal as he could be mistaken for Deathwatch though I found on the 40k wiki that GK used to be black and silver before they went to the silver and gold livery that they have now, which helps explain my black armoured brother-captain ( he's been around so long he still has the old school armour). So here are the pics! I've only basecoated the arms so far but I got pretty far on the torso, I just have red highlights and text on the parchment to go, LOVE washes Edit: Oh and don't worry the left arm isn't attached yet I wouldn't leave it with a huge gap between it and the torso!

Thanks alexwars1 and Foxphoenix it's alway good to hear positive feedback! So I have had the chance to finish the chaplain to tabletop standard and I'll probably leave it at that I just have the base to do and I'm gonna do something a bit more than my usual gravel, maybe find some broken statue or something it has to match my ashwaste them though. I've also got to find a GK termie shield for his left shoulder but I think I might be able to convince a friend to part with one of his ( right andyfish?) Here are some pics of the final product. I could probably do another wash and highlight but we move house in 2 days and need to pack up my painting desk and puter C&C welcome as always! Cheers, BLACKHAND

Personally, I think he's not Grey Knighty enough. He's still a Chaplain, I know, but I think he should have more than just other shoulder pads. How about some sort of Nemesis/Crozius Kombi-Weapon?

This.
Make the Crozius the hilt of a nemesis sword. THAT would be awesome and fit both chaplains and greyknights.

Post by: BLACKHAND
Cheers guys, the nemsis/crozius combo sounds like a plan, do you think I will need to change the paintjob to go more GK?
I was also thinking about converting his right arm to have a wrist mounted stormbolter GK style what do we think?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
A wrist-mounted Stormbolter would also help quite a bit with that model. Tha Paintjob I'm not so sure, but that's mostly because I'm not a big fan of the shiney chrome knights in general.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Yeah same, I do my GK with a drybrush of gunmetal over black , I don't leave brush marks or anything but I also try and leave it as dull as possible. I think the paintjob can stay as is since chaplains are black armoured anyway but I will definitely try and find a right hand that is empty and a stormbolter to build into his wrist armour.
Might be a while as I received the models I'm gonna convert up to rough riders and I need to get them done for a tourment coming up in a month.

Also, a thought just occured to me: aren't all Grey Knights Psykers? How can there be a Psyker Chaplain? Isn't that against the rules or something? ^^

THat is Forge World's Inquisitor Solomon Lok. And the sword he normally has is horribly brittle.

Post by: BLACKHAND
@anung un rama - I am seriously contemplating using a right arm from a GK termie that is holding a nemesis and sculpting a stormbolter onto that so yes he would have a crozius and nemesis, not too much I was worried he would look ridiculous with two weopons? As to whether a psyker can be a chaplain I have no idea but as he won't technically be a chaplain I'm not worried at the moment, but again who knows what a new codex will bring? @archibald Jack - I got the Solomon Lok from my flatmate as payment for some painting I did, but I also buy from forgeworld once or twice a year to keep my resin addiction going and the move went well! of course the first thing I did was plug in my modem and check that the broadband was up and running, I didn't enjoy the prospect of no internet for the whole easter break! check out the lok figure here http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Daemonhunters_/INQUISITOR-SOLOMON-LOK.html @mattlov- hell yes the swords brittle! looked good while it lasted tho. To be honest I can't beleive the scribe servo skull that comes with him is still in tact. Oh well I better get back to unpacking before the fiance cracks me on the head. Cheers BLACKHAND

Post by: BLACKHAND
So having just moved house and seeing all the models I had packed away for months in a fresh light I decided that my dreadnaught needed work. A bit of history, I bought this space wolf dready online from someone who had carved off all the iconography quite roughly and then obviously lost interest. I did a bit of clean up work slathered him in inquisition symbols and purity seals and called him an inquisitorial dreadnaught. I even painted him black instead of in a GK scheme and made up some fluff about him being an ancient inquisitor who was entombed in a dread suit to continue the fight. In the past couple of months I have picked up more GK and now have almost enough to feild a pure GK force so I figure the dread needs GKing so I can run him in that army. Unfortunately metallic paints seem to pick up every lump and scratch in a model so he needs to be cleaned you a lot ...a LOT a lot. So as an easy project while I recover from unpacking I have begun GSing the front and sarcophagus of the dread and finished adding the incinirator to the CC arm. And heres a pic of my scratchbuild T/L lascannon arm, I'm thinking of finding another lascannon to replace the multilaser C&C welcome especially if you can think of something to put on his sarcophagus! Cheers BLACKHAND

WOW!!!!!!!!
this army is amazing blackhand!
yes replace the multilaser with lascannon.
i like the chaplin but you should do a combi nemises/conzus weapon
hopefully when GW redoes the inquistion by the end of next year at the latest (as the rumour mill will have us to believe) they will add a GK chaplin.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
@ commissar Agro - Thanks man, I've been working on this army a while and it's become a real favorite of mine.
And yeah I am looking the weapon options for the chaplain its kinda tempting to wait and see what the new codex brings before chopping lead...though apparently in the newest missions book from GW every race has specific missions, even Dark Eldar, every race except witchunhunter and daemonhunters that is.....
Anyhoo a friend of mine came over to beg once agin for me to build him another Tervigon and I showed him the work I have been doing on my GK dread he suggested I lengthen the barrel on the Aurocannon as the stubby one the came with the SW dread was over powered now by the highly customised CC arm so I hunted around for a razorback autocannon I knew I had in the bitz box and here is the result
As you can see it's much more imposing and has added half again its length, so this is how my dread stands after a day of screwing around.
It will have to wait till I find something suitable for a sarcofagus plate , though My friend did think the mirror finish was cool, something about the dread's enemies being able to see themselves die...
An what do you all think about me crafting a nemesis force blade on te CC arm to go with the incinirator?
C&C Welcome as always
Cheers,

Though I'm not a big fan of the idea that Grey Knights would field anything more than just infantry this looks promising.
The longer Assault Cannon is a great idea and it looks really good on the Dreadnought. You should drill in the barrels.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
@Anung Un Rama - Thanks man I like the longer assault cannon too and as soon as I get a small enough drill bit I'll drill out the barrels for ya. I have a spare relequary from a IG Priest that I'm going to mount on the front of the dread I just need to carve off a fair emount off of the back to get it to look right , should have picks up after the weekend. Speaking of converting...I mentioned earlier in the plog that I was planning a rough rider unit with mech steeds. I collected the parts started building the master copy, and then a certain Tervigon project came along...and destroyed my will to build bespoke models fro the foreseeable future! This is not to say that the right project won't come along but I just don't have the concentration left after work, study and my 2 yr old satanspawn Regardless, I still want rough riders in my IG army and for the longest time I have had the urge to convert up a unit using the awesome Dark Elf Cold Ones. Now before you all groan and start telling me that it's been done before and is totally unoriginal, I have to respond with .... I really don't care. The models are kickass and thats the end of it. So onto the pics of my first nights' work. Please understand the GS work is just a base at the moment and will get a lot of filing, smoothing and extra GS to add more folds and billows to the pants and coat. Questions : Do you think I can get away with using the Elf Knights legs? I really wanted spurs! I figure I can explain away the greaves by saying the riders need them to keep their legs from getting torn to shreds by the cold one's scales and spikes. Do I need to build a coat over the armour? or can I get away with making it an extension of the tunic that is under the flack vest? Anyway thats the beginnings of my Rough Riders what do you think? C&C is mandatory! Cheers BLACKHAND
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
The GS on the legs is already better than most I can do with the stuff.
I don't mind the legs, the coat gives the model enough "cloth parts" so that the legs can still be armored.
Is that the kind of base caverlary is supposed to be on these days? I thought they use 40mm round bases, which imo would look a bit better on the models. I use the longer Caverlary bases only for bikers.

Post by: BLACKHAND
Good point Anung, TBH I have no idea I might have to do some research as these guys are playing in a tournament in 2 months!
The Cold Ones came with rectangular bases, though this was cause they are for warhammer fantasy. I thought I would round the ends to make them fit with 40k and also because there used to be a tutorial on the old GW site that showed how to make them and I wanted to give it a go.
I can always put them 40mm bases as its actually quite a pain to convert the bases

Post by: Anung Un Rama
There are no pictures of the Rough Riders in the current IG book ( I think they're embarassed they still haven't made new models) but I believe the Forge World Krieg Riders are on 40mm bases.
I know there a pain to convert. I do it for bikes.

Post by: BLACKHAND
Yeah I wll probably try and track down some 40mm bases to make it easier. Anyway here are some pics of the dread with the icon on the sarcophagus, And here is a test of the paint scheme I'm planning on using on the Cold Ones I've got a lot of cleaning up to do on eth patterns around the face as well as painting the claws, spines and saddle/bridle but you get the rough idea. I'm hoping the pale colouring of the cold ones will contrast nicely with my standard army colours. C&C is always appreciated! Cheers, BLACKHAND

if you want to convert bases for the cold one rough riders, keep the WHF base and cut a small round slot base in half. (is it 20mm?i dont know the size, the one your stormtroopers are on) glue these 2 haves onto each end a BAM! you have a 40k bike base.
no i dont have a tutorial, a firned of mine did it for a converted bike using this method and no he didn't do a tutorial. sorry if this makes no sense at all!

@commissar Agro - Cheers, I'm glad with how the dread came out too, much more GK!
@young Logan - Which arm? the CC arm is the space wolf venerable arm with a bunch of stuff I added to cover a whole lot of damage from it's previous owner.
@cosmic pixie - Believe it or not the cold one has had a wash already but I didn't want to darken it too much, I am planning on doing some pin washing to add detail later though. As usual my lighting rig has washed out alot of the colour as well.
@leone - thanks man!

Ok....so I somehow get the idea that several of you readers would like a group shot of my Ig...I know, where is this coming from right? Its on its way as soon as I get the chance to take some pictures in daylight, probably this weekend. In the meantime a package arrived from maelstrom games today and totally distracted me from my roughriders...my Clanrats and Kroot! Clanrats and Kroot? you say, who needs Clanrats and Kroot? what could you possibly do with them? I've already posted about my sick urge to make a 40k skaven army based on the IG codex and a few weeks back I found this great blog and these models in particular http://pickadamnarmy.blogspot.com/2010/01/ratlings-bloodpact-style.html (keep an eye on rabidchilds blog, its got some awesome bloodpact conversions) So when Maelstrom had a 17.5% off sale I brokedown and bought a box each of Clanrats and Kroot to build me sum Ratlins'! After a night of fiddly cutting, glueing and GSing I have the minimum three snipers which I will include in my IG list along with my "counts as" Marbo from early in the blog. enjoy! and a groupshot.... Don't worry I'm still working on the Roughriders C&C welcome Cheers, BLACKHAND

Post by: BLACKHAND
@commander argo - lol yeah they might raise some eyebrows at the next IG convention, but when you have an understrength company on an alien planet you take what troops you can Oh and the rocks are volcanic rock called "scoria", its great , light and easy to cut and shape to fit on bases and its full of little holes to add depth when you paint it. I just undercoat it black then drybrush with fortress greay and a few touchs of skull white ( for my ashwaste basing)
@anung un rama - other than cutting off the left arm that is held against the clanrat's body it was an easy conversion, I am thinking about what parts I would need to give them lasguns so I could run them as penal legion but I have to sit down witht the models and really think.
I would be very keen to see your friends army, with the new skaven I think you could get some very cool looking spacerats.

I see you decided to lose the blades at the end. Makes more sense for Ratlings I guess. Though it that case you might want to consider getting rid of the one at the end as well.
11980
Post by: Commissar Agro
I agree with Anung Un Rama.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Yeah I was definitely looking at cutting the blade off, a couple of the arm poses have the stock tucked right up under the arm so the blade is hard to get at but it would probably be pretty hard to see where I cut it off anyway.
What do you think about adding a magazine of some kind to the rifle?
I have to say I'm pretty stoked with how the bases turned out, having some of the ratlings standing a cm higher than the others makes the unit look a lot deeper and interesting when they are clumped together.
Cheers guys,
BLACKHAND
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
The problem with adding magazines would be that you might ruin the slick apperance of the Kroot rifle. Whatever you add, it will make it look less efficent IMO and that's not even counting the problem that you would have to find magazines which actually looked good on the guns.
Maybe instead, add some form of spare ammo to the bodies.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
True, I might raid the kroot sprue for some of the pouches and ammo clips, I do like the musket styling of the kroot rifle.
Sniper rifles of the tech level the kroot rifle looks to be from would probably be single round loaders anyway right?
What's your opinion on covering the forearm spines with GS fur to make them more ratty than krooty (if krooty is a word)?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
I kinda like the spikes. Makes them look more mutant and less ratty. And the way you build the models there aren't even any fur parts showing anyway.

19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
I'm ok with the body of the lance just not the blade at the end, I'm stuck trying to think of the right kind of tip that will show it's explosive nature without being too bulky, the best I've come up with so far is mounting a mortar shell from theIG heavy weapon sprue at the end. I might try it on an extra lance I have and see how it comes out.
If you have any thoughts feel free to post em!

Post by: cosmic pixie
You could add some kind of wiring/wire on the side of the body of he lance andthen just have a small gs blob or cube thatit is attatched to, maybe with a kind of button/trigger on the end to make it look like it explodes on impact.

I got nothing. While I want to build a unit of Rough Riders for my Nurgle army at some point I really don't have any idea how I could build something like exploding lances.

Post by: Young_Logan
The riders look very starwars Empire/storm trooper, is that the idea or is it just me?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
@cosmic pixie - I've been thinking of the wire along the lance, need to find some that isn't too thick as to overpower the lance itself, as for the explosive head I am still to try the mortar or HK missile tips ( damn my fiance for dragging me out to a party! )
@ Anung un Rama - No worries Rama, the Idea Machine has to run out gas every know and then! I did toy briefly with hammers like the ork tank hunters use, the Roughriders have to get close to use their lances anyway so why not big arse explosive hammers? what do you think, I'm not too into buying a bunch of tank hunters to steal the arms off but I could probably kitbash something together....
@young_logan - Could be the armoured legs which was just me not wanting to GS 5 sets of new riding legs (though I ended up having to do a lot of GS work anyway) If its the heads I just wanted them to match with all the helmeted stormtroopers I had. So long-winded way of saying that it wasn't intentional, and after a paint the resemblance might be a lot less.

Here is a pic of the one finished rider and here is the promised groupshot , sorry its not the greatest, I tried several times today to get a good shot with decent light but my painting room (aka the dungeon) is just too dark so here is the best of the lot It wasn't till I tried to fit the entire army into the frame that realised how big it has grown and how much an IG army really can outnumber a GK army. So as a relief from the riders I had another go at the chaplain. I needed a plastic stormbolter and ordered some online from a bits seller I found, they arrived and were SW marine bolters so had the wrong ammo clip, crap.
Luckily I am painting a marine army for my local club and decided to lop a stormbolter off one of the AOBR termies, of course I had to replace it and have given the termie the leftover autocannon from the AC conversion I did my GK dread, of course the cannon is probably to big but it can only look cooler to have bigger guns right?
Anyway heres the pics of where I am with the GK chaplain, I had no scenery for it's base so I slapped him on a big arse rock, He now towers over his fellow termies which is fine, but I'm most happy with how the wrist mounted stormbolter came out. Other than discovering that the GK bolter is slightly smaller in every way than the plastic one it looks the same...only bigger
and a shot with a normal GK terminator for comparison

How about a small bundle of grenades tied to the end of the lance, with a detenator cable running down the length of the weapon.

Ok so I know I haven't posted here for a while but this weekend I had the chance to take the Malefis 666th "Blackhands" out for a spin!
here is a long awaited and nearly well lit group shot
and another
and here is a shot of my boys ready to thrash my friend David's chaos marines
So two days and six games later I came out a respectable 12th out of 28th, considering I lost 3 games , drew 2 and only won 1!
How did I get such a high placing with such crap scores?
By winning best fricken painting! dang I forgot to take a pic of my medal.......
I've got to say that while I wasn't painting and converting for anyone but myself it was still nice to get a bit of recognition for my work
Oh and my prize was kinda nice too...
... yes thats a Baneblade! , I believe its and older style as it only has 2 primary weapon choices but I'm still not complaining....oh wait there is one little thing....
...Yes that is the main cannon that is snapped off the sprue, THE MAIN GUN DAMMIT!!!!
At least now we know why GW sent it to us as a prize, it seemed too good to be true...
So despite mentioning a walking tank earlier in the thread I think that after I finish my first Sabretooth Marine squad I will be moving onto building the Baneblade, and as well as showing how to fix a snapped off main battle cannon I will post up pics of me attempting to build a Vulcan Mega bolter that I can switch out and run it as a stormlord...there is something about carrying 40 guard around in one tank that appeals to me.
Cheers

Congratulations blackhand.
Nice group shot, I forgot how good this army looked.
I am not sure if you are aware but the baneblade/hellhamer kit turrent is completly different to the Shadowsword/stormlord kit but good luck anyway with the conversion. not sure how you would do it but good luck.
Maybe GW customer service could help you with the baneblade problem, they might replace it but since you have no proof of purchase it is doubtful but hey you never know, just explain how you got it and they may replace because you never know your luck.
dam I seem to have rambled on. oh well.
again congratulations!!!

Thanks Agro!
And yes after an evening of looking at the different patterns for the super heavies I realize that there would be too much work to convert it to a stormlord.
Plus I think the stormlord is a waste of a superheavy chassis, they are a heavy gun platform not a people mover and since I really don't move my guard around a lot there is no need for one.
As to the cannon I figure I can spend $10 calling GW or $6 on some plastic tube and make a sleeve for the broken part. A bit of cutting and glueing and I will have a slightly variant Baneblade!
I don't feel too justified in complaining about a free baneblade especially when I have the skill to fix what is not really a big problem.

I had a go at the cannon tonight, got myself some styrene tube from the local model shop and added a sleeve...oh and a bout an inch of extra length added a couple of styrene rods to the side of the tube as well as a cuff at the base Then , whether it was the new plastic glue I was using or just pure exhaustion I thought I would start assembling the Baneblade and after 3 and a half hours this is where I got to Now I had better get some sleep before I cock it up some how Cheers BLACKHAND

By the Emperor that thing is a monster!
Oh wow that looks great, the extended barrel makes the baneblade look so bad ass.
reminds me of Oddballs sherman in the movie "kelly's heros" but epic-er

Great looking army, you would've had my vote for best painted. That sucks about the main gun being busted, but it looks even better with your repair and extension. Lets see some paint on that tank.

We have paint!
So I have had a manic couple of days getting the 'Blade built and painted and I think its come out well, I realize it's fairly basic but it matches my other tanks so what the hell.
My only problem is that was the last of my pig iron heads :( !!!!
There won't be too much for this blog for the next few weeks until 3 leman russes I bought online arrive and I begin stripping and repainting those bad boys.
I found in the tournament I played in the other day that since I am one of only two guard players in our club that no one is prepared to deal with multiple pie plates dropping on them so I am taking advantage of it

So my LRs arrived and between them and a sudden addiction to necromunda I've been pretty busy. Thought I would post a pic of one of the LRs, I got three of them, two of which had no sponsons and one of those had THE WORST UNDERCOAT EVER! honestly thought this guy had used housepaint to baseocat the damn thing. Regardless I tried to clean the crud off but ended up with the sides pretty messed up. So I ended up spraying them black and was going to leave it at that....until I saw Xanthos's blog! there I saw how he had used a FW chimera armour skirt on a LR which gave me an idea..... So here she is, right off the production line with pristine custom built armour skirts ready to pound the emporer's enemies to paste! I put up a tutorial on my process for the skirts if anyone wants to have a go http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/303060.page C&C is welcome as always Cheers, BLACKHAND

Excellent army Blackhand.
Sweet, crisp, paint job and awesome Rough Riders.
You fixed up the main battle cannon on the Baneblade very well, no one will ever notice =]

@lasfiredoesn'thurt - Thanks bud, they have definitely evolved from their humble beginnings as allies to my daemonhunters into a asskicking Guard army.
True no one has noticed the Main Battle Cannon...yet. Our local club has an Apoc game this weekend and I think the other players may notice its several inches longer
On a totally different note, I inherited a ship today.
Its the 4 foot long hull of a model of the Bismark and I am thinking of building dry dock for it to use as a piece of scenery for the club. I figure I will load it up with battle cannons and give it a scenario where either army can seize it and take control of the cannons.
My question is..... is there a place in 40k for ships that actually float? I figure more low tech worlds would use them if they couldn't get hold of imperial tech?
What do you guys think?

how hard was it to remove the ultra icons from telion?
ive been thinking about getting one but i dont place smurf-marines.

Post by: BLACKHAND
@templeorks - thanks man @stargrave - Fairly easy, IIRC there is only one on the knee, on the left shoulder and the gun. I use a fresh blade on my craft knife and sliced off the knee and gun symbols. for the shoulderpad I greenstuffed the entire thing but I was trying to match him to my Stormtroopers, in hinsight I would have attempted to carve off thata one as well because the ridged shoulderpad looks quite good and I have seen other guys tae off the symbol no worries. I would like to say if you aren't running ultras don't get the telion model just convert a scout sergeant, but hey he looks fricken cool right?

That's what she said.
Ok now thats been said...
The imperials have entire planets that are just ocean, I think they would still use boats.
A while ago a guy made a battleship for his guard, I think it was called the princess of Vostrya.
Most planets would still have boats but as a warship I'm not to sure, because there role would be taken over by starships, but orks do use subs, there is a apoc datasheet for it, so it would seem reasonable that the Imperium would use sea based warships on "modern worlds" i.e current to our tech level irl and lower to a point (yes feral worlds I'm looking at you!)
IMHO it is perfeclty reasonable to have imperial battleships, there are alot of worlds out there and the imperium is a werid place, anything is possible.
