Last I checked, weety, they were talking about reducing the level of housing benefit paid (or capping it, at least), not scrapping it entirely. I can't argue with that, especially given some of the stories you read with people getting houses in London, where their benefit per week is heading towards what I get paid in a month...

Nice jobs on the Delaques up there - do you have any more of them to paint?

Post by: weetyskemian44

well thats a whole different kettle of fish - My rent is peanuts and I do pay most of it myself (unless its january). but I am not convinced that politicians wouldn't like to turn us all into slum dwelling peasants if they could make a fast buck out of it. Rent in london is so damn high I'm surprised anyone lives there at all!

There's still plenty of delaques left to go, including the gang leader.

Got called into work at the last minute to do sick cover so no painting... bummer-ish.

Sounds the same as here in the US, but the only stories they want to tell are of the ones abusing the system, in order to spin your opinion against it. Don't you know that if we aren't born rich, that it is our own damn fault? They never tell the stories of the people who really need help temporarily until they get back on their feet. That doesn't make for good, anger-inducing news like the one lady who keeps having babies in order to keep living off the welfare system her whole life.

Now they are talking about eliminating the Department of Education, because if you aren't born rich, then you don't deserve help paying for a college education.

I guess 'master bedroom' makes it sound a bit grander than it is

It's a 40' trailer home based on a pontoon with decking around the outside....so I'm floating trailer trash basically
When I got it I looked at the main bedroom, looked at the 'single' bedroom, realised that my modelling stuff wasn't going to fit into the small room, and so decided the small room was fine for sleeping in.

I'll keep an eye out for the flaming torches, you'll be made welcome, but the angry mob will have to stay outside I'm afraid, it gets awfully cosy in here way before getting towards double figures.

Nice baldies by the way

edit: just reralised some of that was in answer to your reply on my thread

Thats ok monkeytroll - I understood it all at least. I will tell the angry mob to bring tents and sleeping bags! A mobile home jury rigged to float! Still looks orky in my head - maybe you should make your orks a floating base?

Yep dsteingass that is about the size of it - my occasional need of benefits and those of many others are just too pedestrian and reasonable to incite the rage of the "taxpayer" (I mean the tabloid media). Its a basic fact of British life that there simply aren't enough hours of work to go round for everyone to have a 9-5 job that pays enough to keep ends meeting all of the time.

Of course that bloody woman with all her babies was a disgrace - but wadaya gona do? starve them? sterilize her? Difficult things to suggest... easier just to let the silly cow sponge.

- Stop paying Child Benefit after the second child (possibly the third, at a lower rate)
- Cap housing benefit (already in motion)
- If, due to the size of your family, you need a large house, that house will not be in London.

That'd do as a starting point.

But anyway, back to the miniatures - what've you got in the pipeline next?

I like your Delaques goggles Weety, how did you paint them?

And actually, the big hand, big weapon look of the Delaques have a special place in my heart, they are the first GW miniatures that lured me into this hobby back in the day. I like the caricature-ish of them and a lot of the sculpts from this time, mostly for nostalgia reasons.

got enough sometimes...and sometimes the prospect of another one sounds good...kids are so nice when they are small and get worse and better at the same time when they get older... the good thing is we all can choose to do otherwise from the next day on... well of course only in one way^^ as the other option getting rid of kids...definite no go^^

Yes - definitely too much politics has slipped into this blog. Children? there's probably too many of them around... I can't help agreeing with dysartes that continuing to increase child benefit for every extra child is a incitement to over-populate the country.

Vic - its true - once they are out of the egg you can't put them back in. I would be very wary of taking on that kind of responsibility while I'm in such a financially precarious situation. Children are not just for Christmas - they want presents all year round.

Anyway seriously, no more politics. In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there are no benefits...

No progress today - I'm ill. But maybe I will get my brush out later - there are more delaques in the pipeline, swathes of traitor marines, quite a few oldschool beakies and a good number of imperial troops. One or two eldar too. Its impossible to decide without a good deal of reflection

Tourured robit - I was thinking that about his hands while I painted him, but then he is a heavy so he might be a bit heavy-handed... (wind whistling - tumbleweed blowing about)

I feel much better today so I thought I better paint something. But first here is my recipe for homemade baileys
350ml of whiskey
tin of condensed milk
tin of evaporated milk
desert spoon of instant coffee
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
Blend in blender... yums

Anyway I finally got my squad of harlequins finished, and I think they are some of my best work

Wow, thats some effort!! wouldnt it be cheaper to buy baileys?

Quins are awesome, even tho the colours are all over the place they still look like a squad! Nice stuff.

Well it is actually cheaper to make your own (marginally - because you can use the cheapest whiskey and it tastes the same). But I always take a certain amount of pride in making things myself. If only I could make my own whiskey then it really would be cheaper.

Thanks miss dee and neil - I would say that the yellow has just ever so slightly greenish properties - Its right on the edge of the colour value so any colour cast to the light makes it look greenish. I suppose its a pale unripe lemon yellow.

and well i thought they used the cheapest whiskey in baileys already???

as for making your own whiskey...isn“t that like asking a redshirt if he knows how to cast GW stuff...^^

but seriously i wouldn do it... many rednecks in the states each year go blind fr their own moonshine making and stesting...also do you own a zinc bathingtube...?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/09 05:44:46

No zinc bathtubs here! Yes distilling spirits is a bit beyond my technology. The government increases the tax on booze over here every year in the hope that it will stop us drinking so much. It might be working? its hard to tell really.

Thanks monkey, cave dweller, small, far away (retro is my stated goal).

I really wish I could make you a harlequin teacup graven. I have found a studio belonging to an old family friend - I used to help weed her garden, but she is old and grumpy and told me to call back in two weeks when she had thought about it... So not definite.

I have been watching the TV show/documentary called "moonshiners"- about some good-ol-boys in the hills of Virginia with their Illegal stills, and the (moronic) lawmen who are out to bust them.- It's quite an operation, and a pretty good show.

It is making me want to build a 40k/necromunda scale still. I'm just not sure if it should be a water still or a sludge/fungus liquor distillery.

There are some parts in the Pegasus Hobbies Chemical Plant that would make fantastic bits for a large still (or beer brewery).

It's sad to hear that there will not be any new pottery in the near future.

Post by: weetyskemian44

I have looked at those harlequins many times archroy - great minds think alike - either that or I borrowed your scheme? (Its been such a long time I dont remember) But then mine have a lot more yellow and less green.

Giraffex - thankyou. Yes patience is required - it also helps to be very shortsighted as this in fact improves close up vision. A tiny brush and a good steady position are also essential. But most important is bags of confidence - I find on some days its just not even worth trying freehand as I just don't have the confidence for it. And if you think it might go wrong then it probably will.

Don't know what to paint now...

Nothing to see here, Move along.

I'm afraid I find painting takes a special kind of concentration, and I'm trying to cut down.

January is generally a bad month for painting anyway - low light, low(or no) funds and a general grumpyness are all stumbling blocks to getting anything done creatively.

But I have at least undercoated the rest of the delaques, and a little RT catachan (yep they had em way back when) with a bandaged hand. Also I have made the decision to start stripping down some of the models I first painted for dakka a year and a half ago because I think I could do so much better - lets have a round up of the worst offenders:

My worst paintjobs

Those are the ones that are definitely going in the dip this year

Love the group photos, I'm always a fan of the old school stuff. i'd be really interested to watch you paint (not in a strange stalker oddball way), your models come out really bright- solid colours... do you paint in layers or water your paints down at all? ..... do you use GW paints?

Whole lotta lead - should be a song title!

tortured robot - Maybe I will do another step-by step? I did one many pages ago for the tech-priest.
My technique is varied - sometimes I like to basically paint a model in black and white first - I undercoat on white - wash in black and then use further layers of black wash and white highlights to bring everything up to the right shade - then use many coloured washes to colour things in. I also use more conventional methods of layering paint to get a bright finish and of course mix and match these techniques.

Most of my ordinary colour paints and washes are the original GW citadel paints from the 90s (amazing how well they keep) But also I have had a lot of success with vallejo washes (they dry very matt and are not as bright as citadel) and privateer press P3 washes (more shiny and bright)

A step by step would be great! or... What page roughly was the last one on for the techy?

It IS amazing! I still have several GW paints from the 90's in the pots just like the new P3 pots, and they are all still fresh. Yet GW has changed the pot 3 times since then, and they all dry out when they are perfectly sealed.

Oh, and speaking of GW fails, , I actually found a use for the GW stippling brush...It works great to clean the dried paint out of the tip of an airbrush! lol

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/19 17:28:05

Post by: weetyskemian44

Yep - when they changed the pot I bought one to try it out - they were more expensive, there was less paint in the pot and three months down the line it was rock solid - Complete fail.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/19 17:52:11

Post by: dsteingass

I've only bought two in the latest pots (clear lids), and in both lids the little flexible part is broken so the lids won't stay open to be able to dip your brush inside.

The last time I was in my FLGS the owner said that GW told him to sell off all his current pots. Perhaps this means another change is coming?

Apart from the washes I'm not keen on the latest gw paints. I still use a number of the old old round paints- not even sure what colours they are as they have no labels.

The old beakies may be pretty cool - But I'm having a lotta trouble with getting the primer to go on proper - its going on all powdery. Thats probably not the beakies fault - My cheap acrylic car spray does that sometimes. Must shell out for better spray

I found with the old plastics that you needed to wash them before priming - not sure if that still counts after 20 years?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/19 19:42:46

Post by: weetyskemian44

Probably! They are a bit dusty. Whoops... Of course these beakies are already painted so I'm trying to undercoat over an already painted surface which might be problematic

That's probably the issue weets. All of my beakies are either never-painted or as clean as I can get them before I begin. They just don't have the level of detail necessary to be able to pull off multiple paint jobs (everything's rounded, not many clean, sharp edges to help define things).

I've found Flash Power Spray to be useful at stripping plastics. Like Gits said, once there's a layer of paint on those old plastics you're on dodgy ground.

I don't entertain the idea of stripping plastics- I tried to strip a plastic squat army to sell - detol turned the paint into a sticky slimey mess.

that collection shot is simply amazing... because of your otherwise single or sometimes triple shots, one could be under the misapprehension that you don“t own that many minis... but i was sure amazed at how many squats and other factions you own in a painted state...wouldn“t have bet so many platoons to be together...

I don't have any fancy Photo manip software on this laptop so I just used Powerpoint to slightly resize one of your two photos. Then I joined them at the easiest spot to cover up small distortions between the two images. Once this was done, I cut a single figure out of a copy of one of the photos, rotated it slightly, and inserted it to cover up the part of the join where the greatest distortion was present. Then it was simple to group the three pieces, crop them as one single photo, and save it.

Took me about eight minutes, mostly because I tried two other programs first that didn't have the bollocks to get the job done.

You're work always inspires me, weety. I've never liked the old school RT models, until I saw them here. Your love for them ha changed my opinion. I however, have been having problems. I have lost my mojo for my IG. My Valhallans sit gathering dust, and I can't drum up enthusiasm to paint them. So... just to do something, I decided to model my tyranid carnifex. Now I am very excited for my new nids. I haven't even collected all of them yet, but the way this carni turned out has got my mojo going, but not for IG. This is probably the best model i've ever painted. And I am trying some new stuff for the base. I'm going to learn how to make snow. Here's a pic:

THe beading/powdering on the primer is probably because of the humidity wherever you are working with it. Is it spray primer?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/20 06:52:54

Post by: JB

Might temperature be a factor as well as the humidity? Some of my friends had trouble priming in colder weather, especially if they left the can in a cold area for several days.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/20 09:51:37

Post by: weetyskemian44

It is very chilly! And damp too. I have to step out into a cold tile lined stairwell to prime as its the nearest well ventilated area.

Vallhalla - I think its important to have a bit of variety when it comes to painting for anything more artistic than just getting an army on the table. So I would say do it and paint more random stuff - tyrandid stuff looks like good fun - all those biological textures and colours to mess about with (urge to buy hormagaunts now for some reason).

I'm glad I've made you think differently about oldchool minis - I felt the same way about pre-slotta minis - they are just so pre-1980s!

Many problems solved this week - Got a daylight bulb and a little clip-on light fitting that attaches behind and above me so I can see to paint - no more back and neck strain. Also it is easy to move so it can double up as light for the photography area. Did a little soldier this morning to celebrate! He has a sore hand. But at least he didn't take an arrow to the knee.

Sweet collection, I love all those old figures. The imperial guard and squats really stand out, theyd be nice to have.

Do you ever play warhammer? With so much vintage stuff, it'd be fun to play games using the original rogue trader rules. Fun in a masochistic sort of way.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/23 06:06:43

Post by: weetyskemian44

I have actually got the rogue trader rules somewhere - they are not that bad! No I don't play but I have in the past - had about 4 games way back in the 2nd edition. I played orks - usually versus space marines with imp guard allies and I was very good at whupping my opponents ass. I favored lots of warbikes, buggies, wagons and stormboyz to close with the enemy quickly and take out their expensive units. I seemed to work - I lost a game when we put a river through the middle of the map and my opponent bravely held the only bridge at great cost - thus ruining my usual tactic. He covered the bridge in blind grenades so when I tried to drive my bikes across they flew off the bridge at random angles and sunk in the river or exploded.

Cool IG guy! I like the way you did his flesh tones and the distinct color differences in greens on his weapon and fatigue pants.

Was he supposed to have an arrow in his knee? Or were you referring to the cloth wrapped around his leg? He probably is happier that you went with bandanna instead of bandage.

New photos = Win!!

Vik is right. Posting using the option for forums gives your readers the best zooming options. When I click on the photos in your post, I go to the photo on a white background which I can further click one more time to zoom in. But when I click the photo that Vik posted, I go to the gallery version with much more flexible zooming options.

EDIT: Another plus using the method Vik recommends is that we can VOTE on your photos.

Will try and link them from my gallery! I would like people to be able to zoom

I just started up a 'project log' over on warseer. Warseer sucks massive balls! I'm tempted to give up. It is completely impossible to navigate - I can't find a direct link to my gallery or my threads. And these are the control freak Project Guidelines (rules they mean)

"Unlike most forums, multi-posting by the thread starter is permitted, because we have a limit of four images per post.

Do not ask for a thread starter for an update in an attempt to 'bump' a thread (project starters don’t do the same, post to answer a question or to show progress). Posts of this nature will be deleted without explanation. Remember that WarSeer is not a chat room, if a thread starts getting too conversational and no new content is being added by the thread starter then it will be locked until it is cleaned (which means a moderator will groom the thread by deleting posts arbitrarily). We would rather not do this, so post your progress and encourage others."

And to top that off I can find the goblin pics I uploaded last year - Maybe they deleted them?

Yuck. The Dakka Gallery is what drew me in and it is a big reason why I stay here. None of the other forums even come close to Dakka's gallery options. And the longer I stay here, the more regulars I know and the less willing I am to visit other forums.

BOLS is hard to read and search. Does it even have a gallery? I've never bothered to check.

Warseer has a nice black background like Dakka but has too many rules

Bolter and Chainsword is just too WH40K Space Marine focused

What are the other options? Legoburner once showed a graphic of all of them with their monthly hits. Dakka was beginning to exceed all of them.

dsteingass wrote:yes asbestos=bad for you. Is that even legal to rent out an apartment with asbestos?

Yes, it is. You can also sell a home with asbestos in it.

In floor tiles, asbestos isn't dangerous unless you do something to break up the fibers in the tiles. If these are vinyl tiles with some asbestos in them, you would really have to work at it to separate asbestos fibers. Just make sure you aren't the one that removes them from the floor.

dsteingass wrote:ok, so it's legal, that doesn't make it right though IMHO.

If you own a home in America built before the 1990s, there's a good chance you have asbestos somewhere. Most applications of it aren't going to harm you as long as you aren't breaking the fibers loose.

It is still used in many products including some brands of brake shoes for your automobile. Some of the materials used to replace it are getting some of the same criticisms from consumer groups.

My advice is that all kinds of things in the air of your house can hurt you. Lots of modern materials have semi-toxic off-gas that they release over time. That's why its important to air your house out regularly and go outside too.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/01/24 20:50:11

Yep - going outside is very good for you and easy to forget when you have hobbies and an xbox. Just started fable 2 - hilarious, I just walked into a quaint old town almost naked, made my character fart and then got fined for public indecency!

I have an asbestos inspector who insists on coming round once a year to make sure I haven't started ripping up the floor or anything! Bloody pointless really.

I think I saw someone play x-com apoc once - looked a lot like warhammer; turn based combat and the computer effectively rolls the dice for you.

I decided to finish painting the space pirates today - But I couldn't bare to do another over the top brightly coloued one and I wanted to go a bit more grimy and dark - so I had to dull down the ones I did already.

New paint jobs look cool, but I really liked the job you did on that centre mini (Bob Olley sculpt I think?) He had a lot of class, although I'm sure you've done a bang-up job on his new make-over.

I'm afraid daylight bulbs aren't accepted as currency here, I only take gold, silver and $$!! Oh well I would love to paint some dwarves sometime.

Here is the better pics + back view I promised. I think the only thing holding me back now is my 5 year old camera - I think I need more Megapixels and stuff.

And if your wondering now I made a lightbox with no money - This picture demonstrates that its just a paper tent made out of printer paper and sellotape with a daylight bulb dangling over it

I use this one:

I stripped three Imperial Guard Sanctioned Psykers (metal minis) this week. I left them in a bath of Simple Green for about three days and then brushed them under warm water with a toothbrush. All of the paint except for some dark pigment in the recesses and some paint on the bases came off. Doesn't bother my nose or my skin.

Why can't you just order it from the UK distributor? That's the UK link I included for Weety in my previous post.

It's pricey in the UK. Twelve UK pounds for 1 liter. It comes in two 500 mL bottles though so maybe you could split it with someone.

I used roughly 1/8 of a 1 liter bottle to strip the three psykers and I could easily have fit another dozen figs into the container. You can also reuse Simple Green though you may want to pour it through a cloth filter at some point to remove paint bits.

Weety, if you're looking to strip metal models, Wilkinson's Cellulose Thinners will work, providing you use a glass container.

Fairy Power Spray - I've stripped acrylics and 20 year old enamels from plastics and metals. Spray, leave ten minutes, scrub with toothbrush (preferably an old one or someone else's), rinse - on some of the old enamels I had to repeat the process. I've heard that it can loosen superglue and GS, but I've not noticed that.

Sorry to hijack the thread but-

I often get and try to strip models that have been over strayed in a heavy coat of black undercoat. When using detol as my normal medium of stripping normal paint jobs easily lifts off, however the models covered with the spray undercoat turns into a black sticky oily messy which is a nightmare.

Anyone had the same problems?

Try Malt Vinegar and an old toothbrush. DO NOT try brake fluid. I have used just plain simple green to great effect before. But I hear on the dakka that this stuff called "LA's Awesome!" is now the king of the hill for paint stripper)

With as much old stuff that you go through I would recommend a ultrasonic cleaner and a good de-greaser.
Link to my review on stripping models
http://warfrog.blogspot.com/2011/08/saving-ebay-finds-part-2.html

When you look at the warning on the de-greaser look for a disclaimer about it damaging paint finishes. For me I won;t use anything other than Super Clean, but its easy to find at Wal-Mart and $8.00 a gallon here.

UK Ebay ultrasonic cleaner
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultrasonic-Cleaner-/110814005527?pt=UK_Jewellery_Watches_JewelleryBoxes_Supplies_CA&hash=item19cd078917#ht_500wt_1202

Look for a cleaner that is around 2 liters and that has a heater. Get a dental or tattoo grade cleaner & look for a used one. Not like you need it for medical grade sterilization and cleaning, keep up with it and you can find one that is reasonable.

A good cleaner and de-greaser makes old models even more fun, I often buy the super crappy pro-painted lots just to strip them and resale them.

Its plastic that I'm having trouble stipping. Dettol works fine for metal, although like tourtured robot I have had the problem with spray undercoat becoming oily when stripping with dettol - I found the bets thing to do was to try and rub most of it off gently with kitchen towel and then maybe try the vinegar...

Ultrasonic clear is a great Idea If I can get one for peanuts! Not feeling quite so poo cos got paid today - the ****s just got around to paying us all the money they owe us (they were paying us the old rate of minimum wage for like 4 months!).

So I might stretch to simple geen but only if fairy power spray dont work. Thanks for all the helpful!

Glad to help, I swear by power-spray these days. I've had a couple of instances of old paint in deep recesses not being completely stripped, but have found if I let the mini dry for several hours after stripping, a pin/needle pulls the remnants out very easily.

Delicious flavoured backgrounds! NOMnomnom.

What shall I paint now? The eternal question. As I got paid recently I allowed myself the luxury of buying a pit slave with disk-cutter and a can of army painter primer - see if I cant get a smoother finish on the figures with a professional spray

Ooh, fresh mini's on the way.

And yes, you can't even contemplate beginning to start moaning about a lack of book space if you don't have book piles looking like the underhive filling the floor space.
Having said that, one of my projects this year is to build a bookcase for all the large books in the living room. If I plan it right I reckon I can create some display space for some mini's too. Those are very definitely short of space.

I'm having to pin my zoanthrope. He sat on the desk for a week, a nice painted model, looking good. Then I sat down two nights ago and noticed he was leaning to the left. So I just cut him off and am trying to decide if I want to just use a piece of brass rod and use it straight from the thrope to the base, or... and this is more interesting, possibly, if it works...

I have an old flying base I planned to use for something. One of the land speeder ones. The base itself is painted black but the rod is still clear. I could drill down into the middle of the rod, pin that to the thrope with brass rod, and then just have one small part of it being painted black, and the rest being clear. What do you think might be more jarring, for one black rod from the bottom of the zoanthrope to the base, or only a small part of it? Because that might look like a floating rod.

Destiengass - I'm confused, is it books your suggesting I box up? If it is then thats a good plan. If I leave them under the bed for 10 years or so then I should have forgotten most of what was in them - plus they will have that rosy tint of nostalgia.

Icy feet tonight! brrrrr. Maybe I should make a hobo stove and burn the books for warmth! (kidding).

valhalla - I would probably use the flying base bit myself. Neither is a perfect solution. In a perfect would they would just float using magnets or something

Definitely more traffic round here - the league of extraordinary riveters will surely ramble all over your thread if you put it over here.

Those RT beakers clean up nice with simple green. But te models are so basic they do need some extra details IMO. And very, very thin layers of paint heh.

I.... would like to be surprised. My only request is that you paint it in that wonderful, RT style that you've got. Since that's what 'eavy metal spreads looked like when I started gaming. It would be wonderful to have an example of the style in my own collection.

Nice pose weets... Will have to find a special place for him amongst the brethren.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/02/03 07:52:10

Post by: weetyskemian44

took me decades to get used to guiness - I used to think it tasted like cold black coffee with ale in it. But after many years of drinking cold black coffee at work(they are too stingy to buy us milk and we are too busy to wait for the kettle) I now quite like guiness.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/02/03 09:22:41

Post by: Viktor von Domm

guiness is great!... thats at least a beer that has a bit of a substance to it... not that horsepiss you get when you order a pilsner... yucky... guiness is very nourishing...

...

or are we talking about this fella here???

I personally, have never gotten used to Guinness. I love it, but can't get used to it. Much like Hefeweisen, it has a quality that just makes it good. Like sticking a 9 volt battery to your tongue. It doens't really feel good but it feels really good. Man, now I miss Hefeweisen, too. I quit drinking entirely, though, a little more than a decade ago.

Alec Guinness, on the other hand, well George Lucas owes that man an apoplogy for ruining what he helped make great in the first place.....

Not much more no.... sweet of you to say! I guess just the one decade since I first tried guiness. Still it took many years to develop a love of the black liquid bread. I'm afraid you might have to wait till warmer weather to strike Europe b4 seeing your painted beakie. I gotta strip it again because the cold screwed up the undercoat!

That's why I use brush on primer in the winter time. No sprays of any kind until Spring. Which means no terrain building because I'm not crazy enough to brush on that much primer.

I think I liked Guiness the first time I had it (at the Irish House in Kaiserslautern). But they served it in a wooden rack of little glasses so it's not like I started with a Pint.

Haven't brushed on a primer for a while! Any tips?

I use Vallejo Game Color brush on White Primer. I also have the Model Color White Primer but I haven't used it yet.

I use a wet palette so it stays thin. Let the first coat dry (maybe an hour depending on how dry the air is in your flat) and then apply a second coat where needed.

Yep, Weety kept harping on about Bob Olley's line so I took a look and fell for the Scrunt Dog Troop. I bought a pair of the single dogs, two of the handlers with dogs, the machine gun for the cart, and a scrunt weapon sprue.

http://www.olleysarmies.co.uk/mutanthuntersdogs.html

Olley's stuff is always amazing to me. He used to do a lot of GW's Rogue Trader sculpts back in the day.

Long time no reply - We have been busy over here with gardening - Got a smaller, cheaper, closer allotment and had to move all the tools plants and materials over in my renault hatchback - it is truly amazing what you can fit in a hatchback when the back seats are down.

don't worry gitsplitta I'm going to have to strip it again anyway so as long as you don't mind a little wait it should be fine - its already covered in stripper and half clean. Of course if you wanted to send one over and have me paint it I could do that too! Happy to oblige one such as yourself - I'm sure it will get played with and be appreciated.

Olley is the dude! I like the dog - looks like a sausage dog!

Here is some bits I'm interested in atm - A traitor marine who I have started - he got lots of black wash topped with a good drybrush in white just to get the basic tonal variations in. Now for some colour. And also a piece I found online - terrible paint job - but reminds me of what I would have done in my first year of painting! He is another Toon for the dip.

Wow, those are two great minis with a lot of personality. I'm not sure which I like best so I'll just wait to see which one you paint first.

Renault? Do you like it? The Clio I bought for my wife is a dreamy little car. I had no idea the French could build a good car. it's also very practical for European driving as long as your idea of practical doesn't involve going from 0-100 on the Autobahn in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

That Olley dog is definitely a Wiener Dog (AKA Dauschund). I liked it immediately because it looks like my giant Wiener Dog, Max.

It's a bit cold for gardening right now, isn't it?

The Bomb! Thanks and cheers to you all. I would paint less but for all your comments and constructive advise. I wasn't expecting to get such a vibrant headlight colour - looks like its got LEDs in it. Its just a very thick smooth layer of white with a watered down yellow wash

Valhalla, If you look on my ceramic art page you will see that my jugs are pretty impressive also...

I feel dirty now...

Multilasers are a consolation I suppose. Does rapid fire stuff still jam? I am about 3 editions behind the times. That was always a major disadvantage to the assault cannon as it could end up hardly getting fired or even exploding.

100 pages!! Triple figures! I guess thats what happens when you put everything you do in one thread.

I've spent the past few weeks just reading through all the cool stuff on this blog, it's one of the reasons I buckled down, signed up to Dakka, and started working on my own P&M thread... which I'll post once I figure out how to take pictures that don't suck.

I love looking at all this classic stuff, and I know how much harder it is to pain those older models well. It's like a separate talent all of it's own... and I've always been impressed by your painting, and that's not just the nostalgia talking. It's definitely the first of the blogs I've subscribed to!

This all makes me wish I could paint something, but I have to go do another day of high frequency trading(till work). I must work hard or the CEO won't be able to afford another Bentley.

The corporate objective and motto of my company :
"to pursue a policy of genuine discounting to meet profitably the needs of consumers with a lower discretionary spending power"
To boldly sell cheap stuff to poor people. Forget religion - discount shopping is the opiate of the masses. I just wish we sold modelling supplies.

I have an infallible recipe for orange - first paint the area as white as can be, then a nice layer of yellow - sunburst yellow. Then once that is dry wipe watered down red wash over the top - A nice bright red wash. Citadel used to make one, maybe they still do, I hope so as mine is 17 years old now.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2012/02/13 19:43:23

Post by: weetyskemian44

No actually it was a cheapo brand of car primer! But I recently brought some army painter primer and it is a bit sensitive to temperature. Its great if it works but it sucks if it don't.

Thanks tortured robot - I'm happy that I'm getting much better at skin - vallejo flesh wash is my new fav. I used to use old GW citadel flesh wash but it does tend to give a 'spray tan' look unless you mix it with a little red wash. Its great if you are going for a middle eastern look though.

I've only had brighter primers get all fuzzy on me. Mainly white primer. The only time I screwed up black primer was when I was still learning and laid it on too thick... but with me if feels like if I look at the nozzle funny on a can of white primer it starts spitting and hissing.
