First off, if you want to bypass all the random ADD crap jump ahead to page 6 or so!!
I was looking online for ideas for my nids when I came across this thread on a diff forum ( http://thetyranidhive.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=converting&action=print&thread=22160 ) and it made me take a second look at my bitz box. I decided that I need to make use of some of the things I have leftover. Like any Tyranids player I have a bunch of extra bio weapons, Carnifex bits, and other such fun and I think I need to make somethings from them. Seeing the "crab" pic in the thread above made me think that I could use an idea like that to make my own tyrant guards. I don't know about anyone else but I'm a bit tight on money right now and scratch building some units will use up some of my bits and fill in the ranks of my tyrant guards as well as some other units that pop into my head as I go. Ok enough blabbing and on to the first wip...
Tyrant Guard v.01
As you can see there are a TON of gaps to fill and the entire center of the little fella is hollow. He will have at least one set of scy talons when I'm done and I still don't know what head to use.... I would love some CC and any ideas on how to finish this guy off and maybe where to go afterwards.

hmmm a head maybe?
I would GS the openings on the carapace shut and smooth it over, i would also use maybe the biovore arm for some large gorillaesque arms.

Any ideas what to use for a head? (seems to be a popular question HAHA) I dont have any biovores sadly...

I popped the stupid looking tail pc off and I'm going to try to GS some armor plates on a genestealer head and see how it comes out.

color scheme? and im SO BAD at GS :(
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
I am absolute junk with GS myself but I am also determined to get better! I have to for the sake of some upcoming projects.
As for a color scheme... I was thinking bone for the bodies and black for the carapace. Only it would have dark blue to lighter blue highlights so that the armor plates end up looking more blueish than just black. Maybe even some grey motteling (sp?)
I am completely lost as to what to name the fleet here... I'm debating one of these lovely synonyms of the word slow in refrence to the pace I am making them at apathetic, crawling, creeping, dawdling, delaying, deliberate, dilatory, disinclined, dreamy, drowsy, easy, gradual, heavy, idle, imperceptible, inactive, indolent, inert, lackadaisical, laggard, lagging, leaden, leisurely, lethargic, listless, loitering, measured, moderate, negligent, passive, phlegmatic, plodding, ponderous, postponing, procrastinating, quiet, reluctant, remiss, slack, sleepy, slothful, slow-moving, sluggish, snaillike, stagnant, supine, tardy, torpid, tortoiselike

Do it with Latin!
Hive fleet tardus / lentus.
Also gravitas (sorta) but my dead language skills are kinda dead so I can't recall anything else

Ok, at the moment I am working with some GS and I had no idea it was so sticky... Not really sure what I was expecting but either way its sticky. Post by: tony_nids_10
Like I mentioned before the GS work is my first EVER so please dont judge me too harshly Considering the fact that my only sculpting tool was a broken plastic spoon I'm not going to be too upset. First off are the pics of the back and front of the crab guard where I put the GS to fill the giant holes. I think I'm going to work on some more detailed GS pcs to put onto these spots, like maybe more "craters" like the carapace has to bring a uniform look...
Here are a couple shots of the head. I ended up using a genestealer head and making some additional armor on it and I gave it a slight crest...
Again, my first attempt at GS and I have no tools to work with aside from my prison shank spoon. Also I think a good layer of paint will help too.

There are GS tutorials about if you're looking for help.
I'm no expert but I do know that your scuplting tools have to be wet to avoid that sticking issue.
Good start so far!

I learned that the hard way about the water! I loved the tutorial articles though. I poured over those this morning before work. I def plan on practicing more on these and I'll post stuff for you guys (all 2 of you) to comment on. Thanks for the support and CC is always welcome.
I'm not a huge fan of dipping, mostly due to the lack of space in the apartment to do it cleanly. I think I'll just do some heavy washes, but who knows. I loved his Screamers so much that I made a few mini versions of my own from a few leftover bits that I got forever ago. I think I may use them as servitors for an inquisitor idea that I had. In addition to the two here I am working on a third with a custom flamer.

Aw,only 2 people are posting on here? :(
Anyway, you're way better with GS than me. It's one of the only things I'm NOT half decent at (followed by clean paintjobs on tanks and feathering, among other things). I'm not too good at subtle highlighting either. But that's an acquired skill.
Anyway,I digress. Good job!
Is that an E string or A string? E strings are expensive....

It's an E string but I didn't buy so I'm ok with it.

I managed to get a few ravernors done last night too but at 2 in the morning I was in no mood to upload those... Now its more or less time to build my basic units for my army. I think I'm still going to make a few more Zoeys from the leftover Trygon/Mawlok kit not to mention I need to make my other Trygon. I think this time I'm going to make it a Trygon prime. Also I need to make some bone sabres for my tyranid prime and his unit of warriors. Automatically Appended Next Post: Minor update... No pics yet but I did manage to throw together a pair of carnifexs, carnifexen... 2 of the darn things kitted out for some close combat. I'm FAR too lazy to paint my Trygon Prime. I just got it a couple days ago, already sprayed black, and I have no desire to start such a project without a spraygun. I play Hive Fleet kraken, so a solid basecoat of tallarn flesh is mandatory....
Sigh. I like hive fleet kraken, but bleached bone is a barstard

Lucky. A white undercoat would eliminate the need for tallarn flesh, but since the Trygon is black now, It needs a solid Foundation, and only tallarn flesh gives that real "flesh undertone" (maybe why it's a flesh color?? LOL).

27872

Tervigon for sure. Tyrannofexes are a waste of points \
Not only that, but I'm sure you'll have an excuse to use up a crap-load of guants coming out of it,which is always fun!
By the way,we have a trade going on. Have you sent yet?

I finished putting together my Trygon prime last night and a few gaunts and gants and a few genestealers and started trying to mind something to make boneswords out of for my prime and some warriors as I don not have any plasticard or the money to buy any at the moment. I just ordered some wings last night too for thy Harpy I want to make. Now all I need to do is snap my fingers and somehow make another Trygon kit appear... Ok my fingers are sore from trying and I've got little ones to make breakfast for. I will post some pics a little later I promise! @ Samus_aran115- Painting is going to be rough to say the least but I think I'll be able to get most everything done before the deadline. Maybe not the real detail work but the primary layers.
27872
Post by: Samus_aran115
Awesome. It would be a shame not to see so many awesome models painted. I forgot you use spray paint,so it takes no time at all to do the rest! (I guess things like faces and those "fleshy parts" under the arm will be the only things to do!)

tony_nids_10 wrote:The ones I got in trade are glued, but the ones I do will not be glued when I paint.
Yeah, that's how I do it.
I just found like 11 guants (roughly 3 of them with legs unattached). I'm painting those first, then moving on to genestealers, then the two warriors I have lying around without arms.
Then hopefully I'll buy a hive Tyrant already. Man that's an awesome model. Not looking forward to buying the Tyrant Guard I want though...20$ is kind of steep.Maybe I'll convert those out of some terminators, haha. Just throw some chitin on them, give em a tail and some scything talons, BOOM, tyrant guard!
26877

Haha, not sure how thats going to work! I'm not a big fan of the $20 tag either... Maybe I'll find a way to make one like I did with the Zoeys.

That's what I'm saying,lol.
Why bother with the carnifex anymore? At one point,it served several positions (like a shooty fex, wtf) and was a mainstay. Now that we have trygons and tervigons and biovores and hive tyrants, why bother with it?
The 9 STR is nice, but that's it. The trygon has 6 wounds, which makes it wayyy better.

All of this stuff is cool. Love the Zoan and Trygon!
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
Thanks warboss!
The whole point of the brood of Carnifexes is to break down the walls of the fortress and on the way there they will still draw fire away from the more squishy units out there. The attacks they will give me on the walls of the bastion will free up the more "useful" units to work of the other defenses. All these guys are for is to make openings in the walls for my little ones to swarm through.
23617
Post by: Lexx
Plus theres a lot of people who remember carnifexes of old editions. I still see people wanting to take carnifexes out first before other stuff. If anything they are good shock units to draw fire from softer elements of your swarm.

Well, carnifex's in spods would actually be useful in planetstrike.. scatter role and defenders' terrain setup willing. Trygon prime would be a barrel of fun, as always, on the charge (with AG) would need 7 on 2d6 to glance, 8 to pen.
Genestealers would be good, use them to crack open bastions in desperate situations or, more preferably, eat up the squishy stuff once it's out of the hard stuff!
Pyrovores could flame through fire ports, and roast some nice light infantry..
Zoe's might not be so good.. BUT THE DOOM.. against "immobile mech", should be a blast.
Tyrant can make stuff WS1/BS1 to help out the rest of your force.. and he can stomp stuff.
Hive guard might be good for any tanks hiding or coming on from reserve.
Spam gaunts with a walking on/DS Tervigon.
Basically,
Trygon(prime?)
Carnifex in spods or just walking on or just DSing normally
Tyrant
Doom
Tervigon
Stealers
Hive guard
I'm no expert, but..
As for defense? you'd stick your bastions on the board edge, block off reserves access points near your bastions with impassible terrain and walk on fex's and MC's from behind your fortress.. Basically the Gauntlet from the Planetstrike WD I believe..
It'd be helpful if you actually drew up a list of what you have/army list you were considering. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ah - missed a page! Eh, above is for planetstrike anyways..

@ comisarmilo- I am def doing the bike/demon hybrids once my nids are done... well at least 1500 points worth anyway.
Oh Darkvoid, you always pop in with usefull info. I swear you read the thread and wait for the oppertunity!
I will def have the doom in there as well as a trygon AND a trygon prime. I think I'm going to skip on the Tervigon for the attacking portion of the fighting. If I was on the defensive side I would use it but mainly I want to split the tough outer layers with MC's so that everything else can eat up the gooey screaming center! Automatically Appended Next Post: I sadly still have no pyro/biovores and I have a bunch of stealers and a broodlord sitting around. I need to get a few more hive guards. Any suggestions on how i should outfit my tyrant for the game? Automatically Appended Next Post: OOOHHH!! I got my wings in today for either a Harpy I will be making or maybe for my tyrant... I think magnets are in order! I have those too btw. The only thing I am not looking forward to is the actual painting of all of these bad bugs. It's not the amount of painting I have to do so much as the quality I will be able to manage. I painted alot in the past but it's been WAAAYY too long since I picked up a brush and I am afraid they will look like... well poo.

Gives him the ability to DS, no? Then assault bastions, no? Increased manoeverability in defense will be fun for keeping synapse.

I like him with a HVC,but that's just me. I like a LOT of shooting in my Tyranids.
It's a personal flaw,I know.
I take warriors with VCs, carnifexes with HVCs and scything talons and a hive tyrant with HVC,lashwhip and bonesword. So sue me.

I'm actually working on a few Tyrants for future use too. One of wich is going to be a flyrant with a few sets of twin linked something or other on him and some beastly wings. I'm also going to attempt to make some taloned feet similar to (but not nearly as good as) insaniak's feet on the flyrant he was working on.

Post by: tony_nids_10
Since my wings came in I decided to get to work making a flyrant. Here is a pic of the wings after they have been trimmed down to fit the Tyrant body a bit better and 4 of the magnets that will be used to change out the weapon sets. I will also be working on the feet and the TL weapons and the one handed heavy weapons to work with the loss of the 2 arm sockets to the wings! More to come...

Nice tyrant wings. For my tyrant I was initially going for the 1 x Talons and Heavy venom cannon. But I'm going for the Bone-sword and lash whip combo and a set of talons. Also giving him old adversary and sticking him in the center of my main forces so everyone nearby will gain preferred enemy special rule. With my shock troop melee carnifex on one flank and the rest of my 1k army being Hormgaunts and genestealers with Broodlord and warriors. Had a lot of fun swamping a 1k Imperial guard force last month with that list. The Fex took a beating but he survived with 1 wound. Whilst the tyrant surged up the center with the gaunts. Fun times.

You can't bring spods out of the hole, and The Horror is not worth it - anything with a low enough LD to have a decent chance of being affected probably won't be trying to assault it anyway.. only exception I can think of is nobs or nob bikers. Take Old Adversary instead - much more awesomesausage better.
Since he wants a flyrant, drop the Tyrant guard and give the Tyrant wings. Just fly in and out of cover.
IMO above list should also drop the broodlord. Pretty crappy model, it's metal, and 60pts is just silly for what it does. Other than that, the above is a pretty good list. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and Tony, can we have a pic(s) of your entire nid force so far? That'd be nice.

Yeah, Paroxism is awesome. Leech essence is the only other one I would ever take. Very much a power you'd use only if it was a specific situation, for instance, the Tyrant is on 1 wound. Terminator squad 18" shooting you? Fly up, strip wounds for yourself and assault. Terminators about to assault? Above.
Nob bikers? (and so on..)

I will gladly give a few pics of the entire force once they are all primed at least. I will be heading over to my parents on Sunday and they have a garage that I can prime in since the weather here lately has been entirely to rainey and windy to accomplish anything. I attempted to prime yesterday and the wind blew it away before it even hit the trygon so i called it a fail... Just whenever is fine. I think I can wait until about july. Totally no problem. Thanks for keeping me in the loop.
Aaaand onto hobby.
I'm considering buying a hive tyrant in the next couple weeks. I'm thinking the loadout will be: Wings,LashWhip,Bonesword,HVC and EVERY SINGLE BIOMORPH OPTION.What should I use for wings?
Lol,yeah, I'm going for a maxed-out Tyrant. I'm not really sure why. It'll cost more than a swarmlord if I do it.
ALSO: I can send out early for you, if you really need the bits. I found like three more biomorph sprues for you. They've all got the Chitin pieces on them, which are hopefully useful to you.

Noo i didin't :( BUT basically my tyrant (which taking out the guard and gun and adding wings could work) with hive commander allowed me to outflank 1 troops (Tervigon) and +1 to reserves. On capture ancd control a tervigon was sitting on the objective while spewing out uselesss termigaunts; my tyrant went to town as he ususally does, and the remaining termigaunts got killed easy but they were basicallly meatshield. Doom came in on turn 2 to spore pod out behind a few ork trukks and killed 7 total on the drop (orks got lucky on thier LD tests, 5 squads were in range) The spore took out a trukk tho!! the trygons came out and killed many orks and those ranged weapons they got rule! they became a target sing too but there are so many the aenemy didin't know what to do! the zoeys came in on turn 3 and took out any remaining armor and it was just win win win!
If you used that list you would need the zoeys, doom, trygons and 1 terv in reserves.

Post by: tony_nids_10
Well Ironfront, Looks like I need one more zoey and I need to make a Tervigon! Samus, I'm using the balrog wings from GW. You can buy them in the LotR bits section for $10. All I did to make them fit was trim down the smell sections of wing circled here.. and you end up with... Now the reason I trimmed these the way I did was because that little flap was too long and extended past the end of the carapace and looked funny. Also after trimming I realized that now I could pivot the wings way more and work on a much less statue-like pose. Post by: Darkvoidof40k
First off, depends what you roll. Sometimes, infiltrating might be good, especially in a DoW deployment against mech guard or hiding behind a building or something. Otherwise, just jump off the board edges and grab some isolated units - the enemy will either focus on them too much or not enough. But it depends if you get good timing. They're best used if they come on just at the same time as the main body of your force is about to attack.
Also, Hive Tyrant with Hive Commander lets you outflank a 30 man Hormagaunt squad - just let the fun happen! (genestealers need to be with them)

Small update and sadly the only update for today. I got a little beasty painted up and finished only to decide that I do not like the colors I have on him... I'm changing up my paint scheme again and I need some ideas real real quick! I know that I'm washing the nids in delvan mud to look like the genestealer in the above picture (left side) so all I need is an idea for the carapace color. No red simply because it would look entirely like hive fleet kraken and I'm not a big fan of that. No blue because someone at my FLGS is already doing that. Please PLEASE! any help would be great since at the moment I am stumped.
25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Well what colours do you like?
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
Honestly I don't really care at this point. I just want to make them look good. I tried a yellow carapace as a test pc and I like how it came out but it just feels a little too bright. I'll try and post a pic of it tomorrow since I wont be getting home till the wee hours of the morning.

Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Well, either I've forgotten or not read about it or it hasn't been posted; but what scheme were/are you trying to go for?
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
I was going to do blue but as I mentioned before, someone at my FLGS has done that already. Also I am avoiding red.
25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Well, I think a brownish type thing for the "skin" with a very light shade of green for the carapace would be nice. But that's just me, and it'd be very hard to pull off what I have in my mind IMO.
Maybe.. grey nids? With a nice yellow mottled pattern? Oh wait, GW did that. And it was AWESOMEsauce.
Hmph. Red and blue are pretty important things, y'know.
Yellow/green/orange/purple/grey/white/black/metal/turquoise are pretty much all you've got left to work with.. and I think we can rule out metal
Purple nids are always nice
Tbh, coming up with a paint scheme that looks good is hard, coming up with a paint scheme that looks good AND that you like is very hard. Try looking in the 4th edition/5th edition codexs for inspiration, and/or surf the web. [/shutsup]

The devlan mud one looks good, more bone type. Grey over white just looks wrong.
I think Brownish Skin and Green Carapace would like mint. But the green would have to be pretty subdued, but the highlights of the green could be pretty aggressive...

I decided today while I was staring into the abyss (being ill) That I do not want my nids to all look the same and it would be an absolute crap schute if I didnt make some variations from model to model. How could they be living things that are all the EXACT same?? Automatically Appended Next Post: On a side note, I have decided that my Doom is not as imposing as I feel it should be. Post by: tony_nids_10
Ok, so the wife's camera is back up and running! As promised here are some of the things I've been working on...
First off is a much better quality pic of my finished carnifex. As you can see there is quite a bit more detail than was seen in the previous photo. I am going to be doing another cote of bleached bone over the ink wash also.
The recently finished/broken/rebuilt Flyrant!
Complete with magnetized weapons!
One last view with the repositioned tail
Now for the Zoey WIP
I was trying something a little different on the arms and legs to try and get more substantial sized limbs that look slightly less... well goofy than the metal ones.
And this wil be close to the final based pose. I want it to look like it is slowly flying at enemy units not just sitting there like a tree.
As always any CONSTRUCTIVE Criticism is welcome!

26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
The claw is actually two metal ork claws. I dont remember what boss they are from. The gun is an autocannon from the IG heavy crew.
I'm glad it looks like a vet, I was trying to make it look like there were a few salvaged parts on it. I think I'm going to go back and add some guitar string "wires" to some spots to bring it up to date a bit more. Any other suggestions model wise? I am def going to rust and chip the gak out of this thing. There is no way anyone is going to mistake this for something walking off the floor of the adeptus mechanicus showroom with some greasy dread salesman behind it! For the dred add another autocannon to barrel to make it legal first of all! maybe black legion colors? maybe alpha legion? or for SM sould drinkers or imperial fists!

Dreads have to have autocannons as twin linked.

Just remember I am NOT a SM player nor will I ever be most likely. This was just thrown together a few years ago for fun. Also I think he is down to help me out with my true scale marine project and my warhound titan scratch build! I am so excited about these projects and to have someone else interested is great! As I said before, all of my plastic Zoey bodies are assembled and I managed to get my Doom attached to a base. I also got my other Hive Tyrant assembled (no wings this time)
I still need to make a few more Genestealers and a fist full of termagants and 15 hormagaunts to get my already changed 2,000 point list going. This only a test list considering I'm not using Tervigons or Warrior spam and not too many Genestealers. Chances are that I'm in for a lesson in loss but I'm more than happy to learn.

Bunch of gaunts

Trygon

For tabletop quality, that's right up there at the top, and I like it. You've just got to finish all the highlights and the bone colour is a mit off. Also, I love that trygon! You're flesh is better than mine. I just thinned down the rest of my bleached bone last night and did a bunch of basing on my random guants. I still need to get some ogryn flesh sometime soon. I opted to get more mechritered instead, derp.
I need a good scheme for the carapaces though. Black looks too wierd for hive fleet kraken, and scab red is too bright. Should I try dark flesh?

Ah, thinning it is a great idea. I'll make a mix of 3:1 Scab red and chaos black and test that out on a guant carapace. That should look the way I want it to.

I have been working with the warstore bits bag my fiancee bought me. I'm planning on helping my younger brother, Rene_Marines, with his Salamanders army. One of the things we going to do is make some vets with the BA muscle torsos. Since I'm not getting another bits bag anytime soon I'm using some Amazing mould putty to make moulds of the torsos front area. That way I can cast multiples to be altered after casting. Palmer is great, he just needs to stay healthy and step into the leader role that the Bengals desperately need. There is way too much ego on that team ESP since T.O. is there too. I dont think death is needed but maybe a firm slapto remind him that one person doesn't make a team.

Very nice work tony, i love how these true scale marines are becoming really popular. i'm reading the grey knights series atm, and all i keep seeing is that they're twice the size of a trooper, but side by side on the field i'm always dissapointed when they're slightly taller.
Btw - is this your first green stuff scupting (apart from the nids, beautiful btw)? If so nice job

@Kensei81- Thanks for the kind words. I am happy to see them becoming more popular too. they just look so cool! This is indeed my first real working with the GS. I'm really trying to learn and figure out how to work with it without and tools aside from my hands.

Looks great!
GW needs to redo some of their old bitz kits. Those old lightning claws look horrible, but I need like 5 lightning claws and I have to get those...pft.
