Well its been a while since I had a plog on dakka so I've decided to start again.
I've already got a sizable guard force painted up which you can see here:
http://fodabettsblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/second-post-my-guard-army-up-till-now.html
However after loosing a few games I've come to realize my army lacks some things. Namely vendettas an psyker battle squads.
First up is constructing the Psykers
I've taken the flagellant head in stocks and a cadian tank driver body and legs. Simple enough conversion. A simple trip around the net and I've got the rest of the parts coming to me to build 3 squads.
Here are the front of the overseers for the units.
The bodies are the standing Baneblade commander's, another Flagellant head (with mask to keep the voices out), and various guard arms.
And the back. The one pointing the pistol doesn't have his finger on the trigger. I plan on putting some text on the book like "How to tell if your charge is possessed:".
I figure this is the 3 steps of battle psykers.
Step 1 wait till the enemy is about to be shot by the army and break them (guy with binoculars).
Step 2 drop the LD debuff (guy with sword).
Step 3 fail psychic check and kill off some guys (guy with book).
I started painting the vendettas.
I did one of the plastic vendettas a few days ago and did the old forgeworld resin tonight.
Here they are side by side. As you'll notice the wings are backwards. I like this look alot better than the normal GW look, as it makes the aircraft appear sleeker.
Here's the plastic's cockpit. I plan on trying some quick and simple OSL on these guys so they're not super detailed.
And the Resin's.
The resin Vendetta was originally my Inquisitor's Valkyrie so I'm going to just update the paint scheme.
Here's a close up of the Inquisition symbol on the wing.
And the inquisition door symbol. I've been wondering if I should paint the door black to match the backdrop of the wing symbol (and break up the gray). What do you think?
Obviously these 2 birds aren't done. I ordered a set of the fancy forgeworld valk/vendetta decals the other day and I'll be adding them later along with some weathering and possibly my normal Armageddon camo. I realize the fluff is that valks get attached to a ground unit after serving for so long so supposedly they would adopt the colors of the tanks around them, but I don't know. Again, what do you think, camo or no camo?
Here's a shot of the camo.
Another thing, the band color in the middle of the tail is the company color (or the red of the Inquisition) however I've been torn with where to put the squadron color. I've thought about painting the tail in the squadron color but that is an awful lot of Yellow,or blue.
Well I'll be working on this army on and off over the next few months so I'll keep this updated.

Yay Guard!
Always a joy. Psyker looks mean. Overssers look meaner.
Vehicles are good - maybe rough them up a bit with a couple of washes and some scratching/mud?

More psykers, this brings the total up to 3 squads
I'm glad this is getting some responses

So. Many.
I actually like that they're identical. They're like Gary clones with worse hair and more psychic powers

Gaaaaaaaaaary....
Gary?
GARY!
Would your arm and head combo work on a normal Cadian Trooper Body? Not sure if the whole 2 dozen psyker clones does it for me. Even with paint.... I think it'll just look like 3 different paint schemes on 2 dozen psyker clones.
The overseers look badarse! Nice.
I've got an upcoming Straken conversion looming for myself as well. So I'm still mulling how I'm going to pull it off. Yet, that power glaive just looks WAY to big for a guardsman. And where is his 3+ save? He looks 100% human. He's Str6, yet no bionics? You might have a tough sell that your commander is a Straken stand-in. At the moment, he just looks like a well equiped platoon commander.

Deewalla - The 10 models on the left of the unit are all normal cadian bodies. You wonder how he can lift it and then wonder how he's S6? They're 1 and the same. He can lift it because he's S6. His right arm is a marine arm which, when painted, will look metallic. He's wearing the usual trench coat of the steel legion so you're not going to see a ton of exposed area. Don't want to get sand in any exposed connectors. Assassin - I don't know what a Gary clone is, but thanks. Still no thoughts on the paint schemes for the vendettas?

Who wants updates!
I finally got around to applying the forgeworld wing decals on the vendettas.
They're rather fragile so they came apart in places but look pretty good.
I also decided to just go with the squadron color with number for the tail section, and a larger number on the rear fuselage.
I've also been working on the manticore. I converted it so I could magnetize on the kit's 3 missiles or put on a deathstrike missile (to be built later).
Next up a goofy project:

Post by: Foda_Bett
Got some more work done!
First up is the now finished (except for the missiles) manticore!
Next up is the lower halves of the Hydras.
I also got the Vendetta bases painted, just some drybrushing and some sand and they're done.
And finally I touched up the Vendettas.
Keep those comments coming!

Awesome work. I did notice you have some "halo " effect goin on around you decals. Heres my steps that erase that halo. Base your to be decaled area in brush on gloss varnish. Use micro set or mico sol if needed over the gloss( after its dry but just before you apply the decal) reapply the micro set until the decal is as you like it. Once all is dry apply another coat of brush on gloss varnish. Seal with you matt sealer as you would at the end. Its never failed me. I am not sure if doing just the gloss over you existing decal work will help or not but it certainly wont hurt.

madmarty - Thanks! They're the next to get paint. I've got to go out of town for a week for a funeral but after that it's crunch time to get ready for WarCon. Vyper - Thanks! The only reason you're seeing silvering in the last post is because I haven't glossed them. This is kind of a work in progress blog

The hydras are a bit wacky, but certainly effective I like the idea of the PBS guys, but the use of exactly the same head is also a little weird Will you be painting them all in exactly the same way? The vendettas I like a lot. The swept back wings gives them an almost Harrier feeling. The eagle wings paint job is also superb. Nice work. One question though, how are you representing the lascannon on the vendettas? Wing mounted?
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Painting updates! First up is the lascannons for the Vendettas, as well as the missiles for the manticore. I color coded the lascannons so I don't get them mixed up. Next up is close ups of the missiles. They need a little touch up on the nose but overall they're ok. Next up is the battle psykers. I managed to get their base coats down and dipped them in minwax like the rest of my guardsmen. Next up is highlighting the psykers after they dry, painting a callidus assassin and 2 mystics.

That is some nice stuff that you have here.
Those hydras remind me of the T-1 from terminator 3 but with a tank welded onto the bottom.
nice PBS, I like how the psykers are all the same!
keep up the good work!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Commissar Agro - Thanks! The hydras look a little 1/2 and 1/2 right now but hopefully they'll look a bit better with some rust on the upper halves. I've refrained weathering them until I am happy with the way they sit on the tanks, as the Rustall I use for weathering flows really well and I don't want weird pools. Another night another layer of paint! First up I built another hydra This one seems to stay together better so now I've got some experimenting to do with the others. I also flattened the psykers and overseers and added some green and metals to them. I added some slight weathering to the manticore's missiles so they don't look so factory fresh. I realize they're 1 shot but I figure they'd be driving around for a while before they spotted a target worth firing one of the rockets at. Finally I added sand to the Vendetta's bases.

Amazing keep up the good work. This reminds me of Eisenhorn when thei is a parade showing of 30 or somehting pyskers.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
comisarmilo - Thanks! That's kind of the imagery I was going for. There's a cool pic in the Apoc book that shows an "experimental psyker weapon" and it's just psyker's being escorted onto the battle field. I kind of saw these guys in the same light.
Well I finally finished off the last 2 Hydras. These 2 didn't seem to like the older magnets I'd installed in their turrets so it took some work to cut them out and put new magnets in them
Then I finished the Psykers.
I'm trying a new color around their bases. I don't know if I like it yet. It does have the benefit of creating a definite separation of models.
What do you guys think of those bases over my old ones like this Commissar Lord?
Finally while waiting for the Pyskers to dry I decided to try out those new Max Mini bionic arms!
Looks like Straken can bench press a tank!

Qualude - Hahaha!! Thanks!
sc0ttfree - Wish I could take credit for them. I do really like the way they look. The shoulder pads will probably be painted in the same color as the armor of my guardsmen (a custom darker catachan green).
First up I've got 2 weathered hydras
I also painted 2 mystics
Next up was the Callidus assassin, she's not quite done yet
The Vendettas were also finally assembled and nearly finished. I touched up the canopy and around it after taking these pics.
Finally I painted (and sanded) 4 galeforce 9 lazy trays... err movement trays.
Woo that was one heck of a night!

comisarmilo - Thanks!
Commissar Agro - Thanks! The trays were great when I was trying out an infantry horde idea, and they'll be good for keep track of squads when I pull them off of my display board.
Plaguezombie - Thanks! The Hydra tops are Terminator T-1 toys that i worked on to get to fit. I then modded them a bit and weathered them. Here's an amazon link:
http://www.amazon.com/Terminator-57357-6-T-1/dp/B001VNBCB6
Scrazza - Thanks!
Tonight's update isn't going to be as flashy.
First up I got the other Hydras weathered.
Then I repainted the rings on the rest of the army
I also finished the Callidus and decaled the 4 new recruits (2 plasma gunners and 2 demo charges)
I've started doing touch ups on all of the infantry. Since I finished the majority of the infantry in June 2009 I've pretty much played with them only so they've got some scuffs and paint chips I've got to repair. I'm also cleaning up some of the blending where I can.

Well I've decided to change the title of the thread since I'm moving on from just guardsmen, just read the whole post to find out why. First up I attached the missiles to the manticore. I decided to use sticky glue instead of magnets due to the way their built. I also finished touching up all of my infantry And finally I resurrected an old project. Some of you may remember my old Warhound thread from many years ago http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/205219.page I have since re-organized the pictures into the new galleries here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v314/Foda_Bett/40k/Super%20Heavies/Warhounds/WIP/ Well the warhounds have sat (more like laid) around the house since then waiting for a day to be picked up and worked on again. Well that day has come! Tonight I started dusing off and re-tightening all of the warhound bolts, which proved to be a bit of a job, and tallying their parts. I also glued on some of the broken parts I could find. Let me start by saying THESE TITANS ARE NOT FOR SALE NOR WILL THEY EVER BE FOR SALE!

That's another gun arm.
It's built out of a camera flash with an imperial eagle glued onto the end. If any heretic is silly enough to get caught in it's blast they see the emperor for the next 20 minutes

tallmantim - Thanks! It's a good ways to go before paint but it's my hope to use them in an Apoc game around Thanksgiving. Well I've always thought the Vendettas needed something and after coming home from gaming last night I grabbed the Tamiya make up kit and went to town The muzzle burns by the cockpit Looks kind of silly without the gun there I think they look good. I'm going to go back with a little brown and hit the engine burns and muzzle burns a bit. I destroyed that little makeup brush they give you so I'll need to go buy another one. I've got 1 week till I leave and the army is technically done! That's a big improvement from last year where I was painting in the hotel room the night before the Big Waaagh. So what do y'all think I should work on next? Terminators Legion of the Damned Tac Marines Dev Marines Marine Tanks Russes Guardsmen Immobile Ordnance Sentinels Of course I'm going to keep working on the titans but I need micro projects do do in the mean time. I don't have room to start anymore projects so I need to finish some of the ones I have abandoned.

Very nice looking army but I must be honest and say that I don't like those Hydras. The turret parts look way too high tech. You could've modify those somehow to mach the style of leman russ. But don't get me wrong that is just my opinion and other than that your army is awesome!
Good luck to the tourney and may the gods of die be with you.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Xenon - Thanks! The Dice Gods did crap on me a bit as in 1 turn ALL of my armies shooting managed to stun a Venerable Dreadnought. Well I've back from WARcon. I ended up getting 3 wins, 2 Draws, and 2 Losses. The points were a little weird (going from 0 - 50 per game in most cases) and I played a couple of jerks and some REALLY great opponents but all and all I had a blast. Hanging out with the friends I went up with and all the people we met was definitely the highlight! Dave Taylor taught and awesome class and I learned some sculpting tricks that I'll be trying out later. Meeting Romeo was cool too and we discussed a bag for my titans But now that I'm home it's time to go back to painting. First up I put down some color on the flames of the Legion of the Damned. Next up waiting for me when I returned home was a box from the Warstore with the new wargames factory greatcoat infantry. I'd been waiting for this set for almost 2 years now as I thought they'd make good IG stand in, and work great for heavy weapon team spotters, and conscripts. Here's the first conversion. This conversion was only done using 2 cuts to remove the stock gun and attach the cadian lasgun. I liked this conversion so much I built 2 more.

poipo32 - Yeah, they're a quick conversion. I'm thinking if I remove the "base" they come attached to and sink their feet in a little it will look a little better.
Commissar Agro - Steel Legioin are a lot smaller than cadians. I only have 20 Legion of the Damned models, they were just too cool to pass up.

Really like your legion of the damned...I think the muted colour suits them more...looks like you painted blue and tallarn flesh first or no?
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Actually they started out as Armory Grey primer, then I painted the details (both of which you can see in the previous post), and finally 2 heavy washes of Badab Black. Then I went back and drybrushed bleached bone and other spot colors. I'm slowly bringing the fire back with drybrushing but I want to keep the tones muted. Also the parchments really need a mud wash.

Post by: Commissar Agro
WOW, they look so damned good

Post by: Foda_Bett
Commissar Agro - LOL! Thanks!
Ok, I may have gone a little nuts on the pictures but here they are:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v314/Foda_Bett/40k/Space%20Marines/Other/?start=all
Chaos black was NOT used on these models. Most of these models were done with dry brushing. After I black washed the flames I brought them back with dry brushing, and that's how I did the braziers by dry brushing the flames. Same thing to highlight the guns, and that is even how I did the bone (except for the noses of the beakies). A small dry brushing can go a long way.
I think they're probably the best line infantry I've done. Obviously some flaws here and there but I'm tired of painting them.
I've also been invited to be a co-author at Game Headz blog at

so expect to see some stuff from me over there.

Well rolling strong with the responses I've done some more work on the warhounds. First up I added the headlight holder I also built a new gun for all 4 out of the same toy we're using for the exhausts. Original: Comparisons It has attachments that light up. Of course these guns are all work in progress they need more details. I've got some BFG mechanicus skulls to cover the location of the old hand hold and they'll need some eagles skulls and rivets. I've sent off an order to Romeo for an awesome case to hold these behemoths!

Great to see you posting on dakka again foda. Those Titans are still looking epic. And I love your steel legion army. Really good work on the armour, its much better in my opinion than the flat - clean - black that GW have painted their models with.
All you need now is a couple of thousand of points of Orks to play against to refight armageddon!!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Commissar Agro - Thanks!
Armorum Ferrum - Thanks!
s.j.mccartney - Thanks! I've got a friend with 9 blood thirsters and around 8k of khorne that wants to refight the 1st war for Armageddon.
Well the titans have been slow going. We've basically taken the time to bring the other 3 into line with the first.
So in the mean time I've been working on a little commission (20 sanguinary guard, dante, and sanguinor) and painting some terminators.
I've tried a few things out on these terminators that I like. First I've tried dryrbushing the light gray for all of the highlights. Second I've treid Kermi brown with bleached bone highlight instead of scorched brown with bleached bone highlight for all the parchment.
Both these slight changes have increased the speed at which I can paint terminators, and I managed to paint 28 of them since my last post!
First up 10 Thunder hammer storm shield termis
Next 10 shooty termis with assault cannons
Then 5 Lightning claw termis
Finally 3 un-Blood Angel-ed space hulk termis.
I built them custom bases so they can still be used in space hulk as well as serve in the 1st when I have to deploy the entire company.

Post by: Commander Cain
The titans are looking great! But I would say that the termies need a litle more work doing to them, but I suppose if you did that it would defeat the purpose of speed painting. I am painting around 20 terminators but have only got 3 painted because I wanted then all to have NMM helmets... sigh.

Very Nice. Foda-Bett, I don't know if you've mentioned this as I had to quickly look through, but I'd love to see some tutorials on your stuff, and/or a website/blog where you go into more detail. You're an amazing modeler. Is that your personal workshop in the background? Very clean and organized. That in of itself is inspirational. (I know I'll reach a new level once I get my basement finished and I can have my workspace organized instead of everything scattered on a fold out table.)
Thanks for posting.

Commander Cain - Thanks! They were painted rather quickly, it amazed me how little they are different they are from my "slow" paint jobs. I'll go back and highlight the gray later. Jack - Thanks! I usually spend 4-5 per night working on the models. During the summer I would paint from 7 - 11. Vlad - Thanks! Semnos - Thanks! I've got things in drawers but the desk itself is not organized. I've got a blog here ( http://fodabettsblog.blogspot.com/) and I've been asked to post on the legion-games blog and I have posted a quick explanation of the Legion models ( http://game-headz.blogspot.com/). indiana1000 - Thanks! I think it looked like more Legionaries because of the bare plastic blood angels in the background. kamikazeguy - Thanks! Scottywan82 - Thanks! battle Brother Lucifer - Thanks! Sageheart - Thanks! Well I finished the normal Blood Angels and handed them back to my friend who was very happy with them. He also loved the Sanguinary Guard and claims they're my best commission work to date! I also finished off the 12 terminators I was working on (10 Lightning claws and 2 space hulk) and got my spray booth hooked back up! We've had a spray booth for almost 20 years but we've never been really happy with the way the ventalation system worked and there was never really enough light. So this week my father and I swapped out the fan for an old motor from our solar heating system, and put in an OTT bulb and the result was nothing short of amazing! I've heard people complain that there's not enough paint in GW paint pots but here's what 1 properly thinned bottle of Ultramarines Blue can paint. Each of these models has 2 coats, and the turret-less predators have removable side doors. The 6 marines and the Land Raider are part of a commission for the same guy that had the Blood Angels. Ok here's the pictures of the booth! Here's me spraying away Here's the new fan and light set up Here's the filter after about 30 minutes of spraying

Then I resin cast them and put them to good use.

Well it's been a while but we finally got some more work done.
First up we finally got all of the stripping done on the tops.
Next we added some armor plates to the top.
What do y'all think?
We also added a piece to the underside.
Before
After
As you can see it makes the undersides of the wing look a little more finished.
Here's a photo for those who think we're organized.
The station on the left is mine, the right is my father's.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well since the roof armor was so popular we thought it needed rivets!
And a close up
The space between the cockpit's hood and the reactor was looking a little bland, so we added a crew access door like the forgeworld version.
Next up we started the long arduous process of adding the electronics. Of course this means we're very close to painting the beasts! Here's a shot of one of the cockpit lights!
After figuring out all the cool cockpit lights we noticed that you really couldn't see the cool lit up dashboard through the canopy so we sawed about 1/2 an inch of detail from the cockpit edges to allow the cockpit to sit flush with the back of the "hump" that holds the nose on!
In case you're wondering what the pink thing is, it's a titan holder designed from insulation foam. It allows me to work on the titans upper body with out it shifting around all the time.
We're still hoping to have these 4 guys done by Christmas with paint and everything and it's looking like that will happen. Up next is more dashboard lights, then painting the interior

About the guard's hydra tank, sorry but the turrets don't work for me either, they look too futuristic like the robinson family bot or something. Other than that all the other guard units are awesome, specially liked the similar looking psykers.
For the vendettas I think matching them up with the tank's camo would do very well, since a combined force concept makes good sense already IMHO, so does their camo scheme?
The marines wih the beaky heads are badass, they're stock heads and could be ordered right? keep up the good work as well,i'm sure they'd come out nicely.
As always your warhounds are shaping up very nicely, in the tabletop I'm sure they would present a formidable force not to be trifled with. Keep it up, they're masterpieces WIP

mindfield - Thanks! Beakies? Did you mean the honor guard? I sawed the head off of one calgar's honor guard and then molded it. The hydras were needed for WARcon as a last minute addition, I've got a better turret and Autocannons planned (probably max-minis).
Ultrafool - Thanks!
sworth9411 - Thanks!
LunaHound - Thanks! They're just Chainmail with a wash of Gryphone sepia. If you want to shorten the process look for Testor's Metalizer spray Stainless Steel. It's chainmail in a can!
manoknok - Thanks, but the fan actually removes all of the stuff from the air. When I was a kid I used to sneeze Ultramarines blue for almost 2 days after painting. Now I've got nothing
Big-Mek-DAKA!!! - Thanks!!
Rose_Mountainz - Thanks! The Sternguard were a commission, the customer doesn't want to pay for assembly and just hands me assembled models in that condition. I give them a quick paint job and give them back.

Well during sanding breaks on the titan I managed to kick out 3 quick Sanguinary Priests. I painted them a little more like apothecaries so they can be used in any of the client's marine armies. Next up is a Vulkan and then my plate is clean to finish the Land Speeders I base coated!

As to the model, a very nice attempt although I would say you need to work through the blending on the cape a little more. Water your paints a little more, and layer the paints rather than simply painting three colours next to each other.
If you check out Jawaball's video on either wet blending or painting power weapons you'll pick up some helpful tips for the technique.

So that's why people respond to posts of pictures of boxes.

This was a commission piece, and was done in roughly 3 hours. The client wasn't interested in paying for anything beyond table top quality, just like the sternguard, land raider, sanguinary priests, blood angel characters, sanguinary guard, assault marines, and many other pieces I have done for him.

Ah, clever I see you've read one of my other posts.... however if you actually read the full post you would have seen I go on ask the OP about his long term plans for the project. And again as for the model, it was feedback, it doesn't take that long to blend in fact some would argue that it is actually quicker given the preference of working with wetter paints. If you are not looking for feedback on them why post? Especially given the exceptional level of your other work.

Continually bumping of my own thread with my own work is my way of fighting those "WOW BOXES ZOMG!!" posts.
Fiend - Thanks! The flagellent models are the GW Fantasy Empire Flagellents found here. You only get 2 of the stockade head per box, so it took me a lot of trades and ebaying to get all 30 I needed.

Perkustin - Thanks! The only reason I purchased the airbrushes was to paint minis so I don't think there will be any cars in my future. I'll be trying out some blending and stuff on the warhounds.
Vitruvian XVII - Thanks! I've touched up a bit of the quick drybrushing technique and it looks better now.
bunnygurl - Thanks!
sonofruss - Thanks! What spot?
punkow - Thanks! The turrets aren't painted they're just washed. The main part of the turret is made from normal thick plastic that I'm sure would take paint easily. The ammo belts are made of rubbery plastic which would probably not paint well.
I've kind of been neglecting most of my posting duties around the net as I work on ebay to clean my house up. However, due to that I've purchased a MUCH better camera. I've managed to paint up a few models over the past months and I'll be posting pictures of them when I get time. In the mean time here is the last of the un-Blood Angel-ed space hulk termi, and my very old Lysander-to-Belial conversion.
I tried playing with GIMP a little more to make some better all in one shots. What do y'all think?
I've also been bitten by the Grey Knight bug and I'll be repainting my 10k worth of knights over the next few months. The first step was to get a clear count of what I've picked up over the last year via trades and bartering and I'm glad to say that task is done! I'll be posting some photos of my old scheme and my new base coated Grey Knight later.

Well here we go with some fancy Grey knight pictures!
Some of you may remember my old Grey Knight scheme (it's in my sig). Mirror polished swords, Testor's Metalizer, and some fancy homegrown decals.
Since I painted 2000 points in that scheme I picked up over 8000 points in trades in the past year. I've been thinking of repainting the whole bunch of them and I finally decided too. However, since each of those original models takes roughly 2 hours of prep time per model I figured it was time to do something quicker. I give you the awesome-sauce that is Alclad Steel:
Prep time: 30 minutes to an hour per model (depending on condition)
The only down side is that the finish is comprised of 2 primer coats (with an hour wait between each) and then waiting overnight to apply the base coat.
You may notice the little chip on his head and shoulder, that is from me dropping the model from about 5 feet in the air while carrying it to my car. Those scratches (and the backpack popping off) are the ONLY damage! The Alclad is a very strong Laquer based paint and it's about as strong as most protective coats.
Even with the 3 layers of paint you can see that very little detail is obscured on the model, in fact you can see that I missed a few mold lines on the original!
I have spent the last 4 days cleaning my previously unpainted knights, and stripping a bunch of other knights. In fact I was stripping so much that both my hands have some nasty chemical burns, and the skin on my right hand is peeling off After the figures were stripped I decided to set them aside on a towel to dry. I noticed a few figures hadn't completely been disassembled and began breaking arms off and one of the little guys cut me!
Needless to say I think my hands new a few days break from mini work.

MajorTom11 - Thanks!
I've decided to take the test base coated mini and turn it into a test paint mini.
My camera needs a little more work when it comes to white backgrounds but you get an idea.
Each "piece" has something different that allowed me to test the looks of certain techniques. The 3 inlay pieces have different techniques applied (sepia on the leg, sepia + mud on the left chest, and Rhulic gold on the right chest), there are 2 different ribbing colors, different pieces of armor have different washes applied, and if you look close you'll see that there is some touch up tests in a few spots (REALLY easy to spot in person)
I'm painting up a converted grand master for a painting contest my friends are running. I had 2 major screw ups that required sanding and re-priming, in the morning I'll reapply the steel. The mini is "due" by tomorrow night, and I've got a commission of 30 stormtroopers, and a late Christmas present mini due on Saturday.

That is actually a gloss coat. I apply that before I apply decals so the "shiny effect" you see on most people's decals doesn't happen. I had planned on putting a decal there for the tank's name, or perhaps another eagle but decided against it later.

sweet model! How'd you do the head? I want one!
I like the hanging book...unwieldy, but he's a fething armoured superhuman with a rapid-fire cannon that explodes inside you and a massive sword that could cut through centimeters of steel in seconds, who hunts daemons for a living in worlds where mere men go insane and physics is your enemie's plaything- WHO CARES ABOUT A BOOK HANGING FROM HIS WRIST?!

Post by: Foda_Bett
shrike - Thanks! The head is from MaxMini
http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=101
He's actually holding the book, the first model I envisioned as calling out a demon as a challenge. Kind of a "I know so I can kill you." This model I see more as using his powers, and the book, to use the summoning, power.
About 6 years ago I went to the Battle for the Lonestar with my grey knight army. While there I met Gary Moreley of GW fame. He was nice enough to sculpt me some details on a land raider I picked up there.
I started scratch building the drivers chair and gunners hatch, then I put a few quick colors down. Afterwards I decided to put the Land Raider away to work on other projects.
My local game group has decided to have a vehicle contest so I thought it was time to finish off the beast. Here it is after a few washes.

Apparently I came close to winning but didn't quite make it.
Last night I finished stripping the last of my 10k (according to the last codex) of grey knights.
Tonight I hope to finish up getting rid of the mold lines and polishing the armor and bladed weapons.
The landraider has had the floor boards glued in, the engine glued on, and I've scut some detail panels to fill in the louvers I cut off the upper hull/engine area.
I'm planning on replacing the removed louvers with some very fine screen to show off the detail panels and hopefully get this thing finished in time.

shrike - Thanks! Work continues on the Land Raider, I have managed to putty the gigantic seam lines running along the top of the tank, and the engine area. I've also managed to sand it smooth, rescribe the lines that are supposed to be there, and installed the tracks Next up is installing the Psyk-out launchers and puttying that join then priming the beast! Since I had the airbrush out priming the titans I decided to go ahead and prime a few grey knights. Sadly gloss black is not the easiest thing to photograph, but I can assure you those minis are shiny and black I managed to prime 2 squads of halberd/psycannon purifiers, 1 squad of halberd/incinerator purifiers, some random psycannons, some random halberd purifiers, draigo, the emperor, Constantine, and the helldorado mini. Next up is 5 more squads of halberd/psycannon purifiers and following that will be tons of terminators. I have so many grey knights that I'm able to assemble every squad as though it were a strike and a purifier squad. I will be painting 12 minis per squad, Hammer Justicar, 7 Halberds, and 4 psycannons or incenerators. This will allow me to field the units how I choose in a normal game, and take the remnants and form smaller squads in Apoc.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well I have officially primed every PA GK in the house! That means I now have 6 psycannon squads and 6 incenerator squads configured as I mentioned in the post above. However I noticed I'm 3 halberds and 7 incenerators from my full 144 power armored warrior goal. I've started collected psilencers in an effort to combine them with the remnants and make Gargantuan Demon hunting squads.
Being totally unhappy with the shape of the new fluff (and being forced to have a Crowe) I decided to make the huge terminator justicar sword from the new box and put it where the demon sword went on crowe. The primed result is below.
Somehow in all of my buying escapades I managed to get 3 captain stern models! I'm keeping one as the reject himself and converted the other 2 into librarians. The first was a simple conversion with the halberd from the old metal captain model and the back pack topper from Hellbrecht. The second was done using a damaged stern I recieved. I took a broken metal halberd terminator arm and combined it with the firey end of an empire wizards staff, then removed his damaged chest plate and replaced it with a baubble from Inquisitor Tyrus. Next up I removed his head and replaced it with a helmeted head from the new terminator box.
Here are those 2 conversions with my last 7 hammer justicars.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
First up I managed to prime the GK Redeemer. The psykout launchers didn't prove difficult to mount and I decided to leave the seam lines to serve as panel lines for the launchers which would obviously be installed later. I also started a small commission for a friend of mine. He needs a dread, a full command squad, and a tac squad in Ultramarines colors. I sprayed his stuff and 4 of my dreads at the same time, then put down boltgun on all of them They're a little sloppy but it's just the base coat. I learned recently that "Steel" is not the alclad color that my grey knights are! The bottle I used (which was pruchased on sale) said steel but the 2 other bottles I've tried since have been MUCH darker. I've been experimenting with other colors in the range but I've yet to find one that exactly matches the grand master I already painted.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well after a few nights of experimenting with colors I finally found the correct one!
It turns out my Grand Master was sprayed with Dark Aluminum! Not Dur Aluminum, or Polished Aluminum, or Aluminum, or any of the other 4 colors I tried that didn't start or end with Aluminum but Dark Aluminum!
So after spraying them on the 24th I've been putting some colors to them!
And you'll notice I changed the haft color on my weapons. After looking at the GK codex over and over I've come to the conclusion that I REALLY like the black hafts on their weapons.
So I repainted my Grand Master's...
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well yesterday was quite a productive day!
I got a ton of painting done on my Grey knights, and even got some more work on the dreads!
First up the dreads, the one on the far left is the commission piece
I added the furioso dread to the mix, even though I painted him some months ago I've decided its time he gets some decals and weathering!
The furioso will be part of my 8th company (uses Blood Angels rules), the 4 melta dreads will be part of my 3rd company under commander Vulkanis, and the commission will be for the 2nd company.
Next up was the Knights.
As you can see there is a dark blue highlight on the black weapon hafts, I've also started coloring their right shoulder pads. Each squad will be broken up depending on what symbol is on that pad.
Comments criticisms?

Love that steel colour, came out really well.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Vitruvian XVII - Thanks! I'm amazed how much dark alumnium looks like steel and how much steel looks VERY dark according to Alclad.
Well last night I was able to get some painting done to make up for tonight's slack.
First up the Commission marines to go with the 1 dread
Not finished but basic colors applied.
My Alclad special order came in at the FLGS so I was able to get roughly 50 more PA GKs basecoated!
I also put some more micro sol on the dreads so their decals are laying flatter.
A few more coats and I think they'll be ready for gloss then flat, and finally weathering.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Work continues on the Space Marine commission
And I was able to basecoat even more Grey Knights
Between this batch and the last I used up 8.5 bottles of $9 a bottle (per oz) paint! I just called my FLGS to get me 12 more bottles so I can hopefully finish my Dreadknights, Land raider, and terminators. The most important thing is the dreadknights but I might as well buy the paint for the others while I'm at it.
2 of the terminators in that lot were actually my stern to Librarian conversions.
And the last batch of basecoated knights has been steadily increasing in colors
I've added scorched brown to the pouches, and khermi brown as the basecoat for all the parchment and purity seals.
I'm going to be working more on both the 2nd batch of grey knights and the ultramarines commission for the rest of the night, so hopefully I'll have some updates tomorrow!

mr-squigi - Thanks! That's my Stormhammer. It's on hold until I get the warhounds finished, but you can see WIP photos here
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v314/Foda_Bett/40k/Super%20Heavies/Stormhammer/?start=all
Well I was able to get the partially painted Knights up to the same point as the previous batch. By my count that is all of the power armor I'm going to need for BOLScon so next is backpacks, bases, and name decals for them. I also finished the commission Ultramarines, next up for that commission is an assault squad of Genesis Chapter, a squad of servitors and an enginseer.
I've started working on my DreadKnight conversion as well.
A little more sanding and it will be good to go. I'll be attaching the power plant to a forgeworld GK Ven dread to remove the baby carriage look. I've got to convert up a halberd as well, but luckily I've got some Gundam hands to replace the tiny GW ones with.
I've used the Dragonforge power cables and base. The Sanctuary style base will be on all of my GKs.
I can't decide if I want to keep the weapons wrist mounted or go for a shoulder mount.
I also finally broke down and took some photos of all of my painted Ultramarines. You can seem in their thread here

Work continues on the DreadKnight!
First up I've modified the gundam hands so it can hold my halberd!
And I built the torso! I've got a question however.
Do you like this waist?
Or do you like this waist?
I thought I'd like the extended waist hiding the magnet but I'm not that impressed. I think I'm going to pull it off and sink the magnet into the torso.
15358
Post by: Vitruvian XVII
Yeah, the 1st option needs to be alot more bulky, the 2nd is a bit too high imo. Itll be tricky to integrate the 2, not really sure what it needs.
15294
Post by: MeatShield
Try attaching the arms temporarily. Often people keep telling modelers that the proportions are a little off, until it is fully assembled.
I like the guitar string texture for the waist, but I'm leaning towards some additional detail in the front to try to avoid looking like over use, due to the hip joint strings. Maybe some armored plating in the front.
Most important advise I can give today is: Make sure no matter what to take the time to notice how awesome and unique your model already is.

lolz your Psykers look funny
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Vitruvian XVII - Thanks! Check below for the one I went with. 2 was too high, 1 was to plain so I went with sinking both magnets.
MeatShield - Thanks! It's actually the pewter power cables from dragon forge. Guitar wire I've found can be rather finikey and not want to bend the way I want it to.
xXH0LYCRUSAD3Xx - As is your typing.
I started off by sinking a smaller magnet into the Dread's torso, and then dremeling away the excess wires from the crotch and sinking the larger magnet into it.
I had to remove the gauntlet bits from the wrists to allow my new hands to fit but after that I glued the arms to the body and the hands to the arms!
Next up was building the Heavy Incenerator. I added a bit of Malifaux fire effects to the pilot light to make it look cool
This can be attached without a magnet
Next up I took the kit's shoulder pads and set them under the lip of the dread's shoulders
To cover up the unsightly gap where the hydraulics go I took a pair of shields from the dreadknight kit and put them over the hole

Commissar Agro - Thanks!
Vitruvian XVII - Thanks!
Last night I attached the Personal Teleporter
I added a small piece of plasticard so that it sits levelly now instead of needing to be 1/2 on a panel.
I'm basically calling dreadknight 1 done. It's weapon obviously isn't finished but I'll be finishing both weapons at the same time later.
Dreadknight 2 took up most of my weekend however. I watched a few youtube videos on fighting with a poleaxe and decided to build defensive stance. This involved sawing the left leg to make it crouching.
This was good practice for the future dread knight poses I have planned.

Lovely dread conversion!
Some suggestions:
The flame is physically wrong, it would go up, not side ways, unless there is big pressure, in which case it it wouldn't be curved like that, but straighter, like a welding flame.
The waist is too narrow imo. Maybe add some pistons, tubes, springs or any other mechanical addition to bulk it out.
Same for the pelvis, the legs are held by some tubes, that looks strange.
The overall impression is still great, but I would have a look at those details. Cheers.

Baiyuan - Thanks! I tried getting the fire to go up and down with the arm's position, but it looked goofy. I realize it is not correct but we're talking about a company that has painted fire backwards for 30 years The waist and pelvis may look weird but they allow me to do the poses I want to achieve. The setup may look weird but it's basically the same setup that the dread has. Hazzer - Check my sig for a link to the warhound thread. The wash on the guardsmen is Minwax wood stain Special Walnut color. Here's kind of the pose I'm going for on 2

I got home a little late last night so I wasn't able to get as much work done as I'd wanted.
First up I tried out a few different poses on the 2nd Dreadknight.
Idea 1 Keeping the blade low
Idea 2 keeping the blade high
I ended up going with idea 2
And the 2 dreadknights together
Tonight I clean up the greenstuff join, add the shoulder pads and then the shields.

I had planned to spend Sunday priming the dreadknights, but I've got a 13k Planetstrike game which they'll be taking part in, on Memorial Day, so I'll need them dry. If I feel like being in a paint booth they may get primed Monday after the game.

Here's the dreadknights and here's the backpacks for the strikes I've been painting! Hopefully they'll be basecoated tonight! Here's some shots from the battle I apologize as there aren't a ton of pictures, and there aren't a ton of notes but you get something We were playing fast a furious to make this go pretty fast. We took NO super heavies so it made for a very infantry heavy game and took a long time. Board setup My reserves (missing 3 valkyries and 14 drop pods) 68 Paladins and characters 50 Strikes, 20 sternguard 30 stormtroopers 40 Ultramarines terminators Chaos setup: Deploying chaos units in the wall Turn 1: Terminators Deepstrike in 2 iron cyclones wreak havoc Pretty much leaving the left flank alone at this point I shake 2 bastions kill a few chaos marines in assault with the LC Termis. Large cylinders are tank traps Clearing the way to the citadel Bottom of 1: My opponent shot at some paladins killed a few, possessed a Libby with an asset and proceeded to loose the combat even though he threw 2 chaos lords into it as well. Turn 2: The rest of my force arrives and starts killing chaos left and right. Dreads bust in and kill stuff. More paladins show up and kill stuff. Chaos opponent calls it. We didn't finish because we took a nice 2hr long lunch. We started at 11 and were set up by 12. Then we got back from lunch at 2:30 then played till 5:30. Getting through 1.5 turns of 15k in 3 hours with no super heavies wasn't that bad.

Vitruvian XVII - Thanks! The tower shields are from MaxMini, the rest of the shields are normal GW shields.
Last night I got the backpacks, dreadknight weapons and legs basecoated
I also painted the torsos
But then something horrible happened!

Skull stick
Fire Stick
Next up I started working on the Heavy Incenerators for the Dread Knights
I've got 1 month till BOLScon and I need to:
strip dreadknight 2, rebuild it,
Paint 2 Dreadkngiths
Paint 50 backpacks
Paint 54 Bases
Print Decals
Apply Decals
Pin 54 minis to resin bases
Attach Backpacks
Build a Display base
Paint Display Base
Lightly weather everything
Wooo... It's alot when I type it all out. I've brought the backpacks with me to work so I can hopefully get them finished this week, same with dreadknight 2 (but not at work).

Rochronos - Thanks! Check the first page of my titan plog (link in my sig). I go through a little step by step of the resin process and cost.
I got some work done on the first Dreadknight. I got the red base, the blue for the eyes/ teleporter, the black wash on the panels, and the gold down for the writing.
I'm thinking of making the exhausts gold to match the marines backpacks. What do y'all think?
I also put the red, gold, and black wash down on the other set of legs.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Very, very nice! man there isn't much left of that marine is there? Pretty much just head and neck! ;-)
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Thanks! I figure it's either an enhanced dread, or a mechanicum robot, or the marine is lying down
Well last night I put the gold down on the exhausts for DK1
I was also able to clean up both sets of legs and incenerators. There is no way to touch up paint on these models due to the paint I'm using, so I have to go back through and lightly scrub it off with rubbing alcohol. If I scrub too hard it goes through to the black primer and I have to respray that area.
I also rebuilt DK2!
Tonight I plan or re-priming DK2 and highlight DK1's torso!

Gitsplitta - The primer is Alclad II's gloss black base. It's used to make their metals shine like they do. Its a little weird at first but the end result is really worth it.

Gitsplitta - You can see the effects on all of the Grey Knights that have been pictured so far. The Gloss Black Primer is the only primer I've been using on them. You can see it applied to the boxes of primed knights.
Perkustin - Thanks! If you'll go to the 6th page I gave a link to HLJ where I purchased the hands.
Well I had to stay late last night at work so I didn't get the base coating I'd hoped to done. This may be a blessing in disguise as it will allow me to finish the gold wash on the backpacks today at work and then hopefully see if they'll have any wear through spots. With any luck I'll be able to spray tonight as I have to work on Saturday :( Automatically Appended Next Post: Well I didn't think I'd have an update today but I forgot that I've been working on the backpacks for all of my BOLScon strikes.

Post by: Gitsplitta
OK. so what kind of metallic paints are you using over the black?
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
Probably the ones from AcladII, I mean that's what the primer is made for.
Interesting to see somebody use this on tabletop minis, I never saw it on miniatures meant for playing, only showpieces.
Good work, the incinerators look ace!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Baiyuan is right if you'll go back a few pages you'll see I had some trouble determining the correct color of Alclad II paint I used on my grand master.
Baiyuan - Thanks! I always use anything I can get my hands on for my minis. I had originally painted the army in testor's metalizer but found it was a little weak and a PITA to put on.
I've had some questions about my backpack pins on other forums so I'm posting the info here for other people's benefit.
The pins are toothpicks cut in 1/2. They're attached to the backpacks by shoving the toothpick into the small hole on the backpack that originally serves no purpose. I put a drop of super glue in the hole then shove the toothpick in.
They're painted on pins as I wanted to be able to paint the shoulder pads of the Grey Knights without having to worry about the vents being in the way.
Last night I was able to get the backpacks cleaned, it turns out this either tarnished or cause the primer to show on nearly 2/3 of the backpacks. Those that weren't damaged got a bit of gunmetal applied to the heat sink looking area.

Work begins on the Dreadknight Halberds!
First step was to a blade. My original idea was to make a blade, but after about 7 attempts I decided against it. I couldn't get something I was happy with. So instead I hacked up a Forgeworld Grey Knight Dreadnought close combat weapon.
You may notice some detail on there. I knurled the majority of the weapon haft on a lathe to provide some texture and detail to the large blank surface.
The weapon heads will slip onto the front when they're ready to go.
Next up is adding a "counter weight" to the back end. I'll also be lightly black washing the haft and then sanding it to bring a "pop" back to it.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Nice idea using the lathe on the hafts... looking forward to watching these come round to completion.

I really like the stuff you're doing, consider me subscribed. And keep up the great work! ;D
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
IMHO the blades are too small, so I would like to see them on the dreads for a viable scale comparison.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Thanks! I thought about trying to add the same details the metal models have on their halberd hafts but I didn't think I'd be able to do it justice.
DiDDe - Thanks! The hydras are Terminator toys. Check the first few pages and I post a link to it.
Baiyuan - They are a little on the small side but I don't have the skills to recreate an inlay like the forgeworld blades I'm using have. I'll get some comparison pics later.
I got home pretty late from work last night and only had an hour to work on the grey knights before I went to bed so I started the decals for them.
1st squad is white skulls, 2nd squad is white =][=, and 3rd squad is white haloed =][=.
Tonight its 4th and 5th squads turn!

Post by: Baiyuan
I think you belittle yourself, I'm sure you can do something similar to a big force halberd, maybe you didn't think of the right thing yet. What did your attempts of making your own blades look/go like?
About the decals, as it's only the first step and I'm sure you'll use softener on them and all the works, I really can't say anything about them, but the GKs look great. Only one question, are you sure GKs would use those "haloed =I="s? I thought those were a symbol associated with the AS and the Ecclesiarchy.
I might be wrong though, I'm not a heraldy jerk, like "oooooh, but the emperors dipers would never have a brown turd marker on there shoulder guard, they only use green baby turds with baby blue dipers, give back the slayer sword..." hate those guys, even when they are right.

Post by: Vitruvian XVII
Could you not just replace the blade? ie. Keep the inlay and the "power" box thing and make a larger blade out of plasticard? Would be fairly simple to do i reckon.
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
Vitru is right, now that he says it, you could keep the whole thing as it is, including the blade, saw the whole thing in two pieces, put a new blade made from plastic card in the middle and glue it all together. You would keep the inlay and the "powerbox" and the former blades would be additional structure to the new one.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Thanks!
Baiyuan - Blast! You're right that isn't the right symbol. I'll get the haloed decals off tonight. The decals are just applied for now, there will be many more steps before they're done
Vitruvian XVII - That's what I had tried. The biggest problem is making a decent halberd looking blade out of plasticard. I may be using power tools a little too much though.
Baiyuan - Are you thinking like my blade would be an extension between the box and current blade? That sounds a ton harder but I might give it another try, I don't know if I have anything that thin though.
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
What I mean is cutting the cybot weapon in two thin lenghty halves. Then take some 1mm thick plastic card, cut out some shape of halberd, file the edge a bit and glue the halves of the cybot weapon onto both sides of it.
Maybe a picture helps:
This really shouldn't be complicated, assuming you have a good saw to cut through the thin back of the cybot blade without taking away too much material. You should be able to pull it off in like 20min, granting some time for testing. If you're willing to give it a try, I'm sure you will achieve a good result.
Personally I would probably sculpt the new blade from brown stuff, including inlay, doesn't sound that difficult, but it would certainly take a week or something and I'm crazy.

Did you make the decals or did you get them from somewhere?

Post by: sonofruss
Nice to see some knurling done the rod is kind of small for that size of knurl but use what you have.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Baiyuan - I get you now. That's going to be even harder IMHO but I got another idea on how to make a weapon with inlay. I picked up some plasticard letters and I'm thinking of building a box with no bottom then putting the letters in the box. Mount said box onto a blade then put a slight film between the letters and the box edge. It's a little hard to describe and I didn't get time to do it last night but I'm looking forward to trying it later.
Knightley - Thanks! The currently applied decals are from the Witch Hunter decal sheet (for the =][=) and the cadian sheet for the skull.
sonofruss - Thanks! It's supposed to look more like something a robot would hold and not like a human would. For a human those knurls would be huge and would probably hurt. For a robot they're large enough to catch on the metal hands and not slip away.
Well last night I stripped off the Ministorum decals from squad 3 and gave them new decals.
1st squad is white skulls, 2nd squad is white =][=, and 3rd squad is red =][=, 4th Squad is black =][=, 5th squad is a black skull.
When I get to painting 6th squad I'll have to find some red skulls.
The old GK fluff was that you only got to put your own heraldry down if you were a justicar so the squads will have the same pad, while the justicar will have a design on his small shield.

Post by: Vitruvian XVII
I get what you mean, will be interested to see how it turns out! Please post a pic even if you dont go with it, always nice to see WiP shots.
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
Now your approach sounds very complicated to me, but give it a try, in case it doesn't work you can still try sawing the cybot blades into pieces.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Vitruvian XVII - I'll post some pics when I get started on it. I've got to find where I put the letters first.
Baiyuan - Don't worry I'm keeping the sawing in half idea. It just seems really hard since the blade and stuff is so thin.
Updates!
All 50 decals have been applied! Most are ready to go but others need some more micro sol.
Again 1st squad is white skulls, 2nd squad is white =][=, and 3rd squad is red =][=, 4th Squad is black =][=, 5th squad is a black skull.
And I've started laying out the display base

Gitsplitta - Thanks! I've got about 52 more decals to apply (the names for the shoulder pads) then I'll be done with them. Then it'll be seal and backpacks! HAZZER - I'm not going to try and kill myself to finish them by next Saturday I'll be lucky if I can get these finished for BoLScon err I guess they call it WarGamesCon now. Its a convention in Austin Texas (about 5-6 hours South of me) on the 7th-9th of July.

Well it turns out my list was about 125 points over so I had to drop a few things from my list namely the Incenerators and the sword/halberds from my Dreadknights!
However I did manage to get them decaled.
Dreadknight 1
Dreadknight 2
Display base
The castle I'm using had no detail on the walkway so I had to cut some textured plasticard to fit. That box cutter is a place holder for something special...

No halberds on the Dread Knights??!!! Waaaaaaaaa!!!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Funny you and I had the same reaction.
I rejiggled my list and found that if I drop the teleporters I can get the halberds back as well as adding in some much needed servo skull support!
Libby 1's skulls
Libby 2's skulls
They all got primed last night in our new spray booth
So what was the box cutter holding a place for?
Super awesome inlay effects!
I'm now down to 2 weeks and I still need to.
Get more brown spray
Paint servo skulls
Paint bases
Pin models to bases
Carve rocks
Glue down texture in entry way
Develop stained glass windows
Glue walls together
Paint display base
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Sweet! Really love the inlay and very happy you got your halbreds back. Your dread knights wouldn't be the same without them.
I really like the fact that the servo skulls actually do something in the GK army. I've picked up BLACKHAND's GKs and after finishing them up (they're mostly done... just some detail to paint & I want them on fancy bases) I'll may add a few tweaks... and the skulls are something that is on the list.

The steps are rocked!
It's amazing what you can do with a pencil and a straight edge. Next up is detailing the sides of the steps, and gluing the keep's wall.
I've been working on some non-BoLScon Grey Knights at work for the last week. Every lunch break I put down 1 color. During the last week I have managed to paint 13 Incenerators and 4 Psycannons! It took about 1.5 hours of touch ups to finish them off last night.
If I can keep up this pace I should be able to burn through the 12 paladin/strike squads pretty quick!

Foda, can you go into more detail on how you're doing the stone texture/carve into the foam?
I'm planning a display board and was thinking I'd need to use some sort of sculpting medium over top of the base of the display to do stonework, but you've got very impressive results just from the foam!

targetawg wrote:Foda, can you go into more detail on how you're doing the stone texture/carve into the foam?
I'm afraid there isn't much more than.
1) Get a straight edge (an L) and a sharp pencil.
2) Set the straight edge on the foam, draw a small straight line with the pencil.
3) Repeat for the next 4 hours.

So you use the pressure from the pencil to put the indentation in the foam? Seems simple enough.... (famous last words).
I worked with sculpting putty/straight edge/clay shapers for sculpting my resin bases, and that's a bit more forgiving. Screw up a stone, just mush back and redo, on this I worry that one mistake at hour 2 of the process = tears.

targetawg - In principle it is simple, it is however very time consuming. If you can break down your item into multiple pieces (like the steps). Don't start on each end and then fill in as it will look wrong... speaking from experience there
HAZZER - Thanks!
MeatShield - Thanks!
Well y'all may have been wondering what that goofy castle is in the back of my display board. That castle is a 1/35 IMEX Blackstone Castle, I'm going to be converting it into an apocalypse sized cathedral. First step is the front door which is being turned into this display base.
Some skulls from the Arcane Ruins set, and some statues from the LOTR Scenery set, combined iwth a couple Cities of Death lights and you've got a decent castle from a toy.
The plastic strips will be riveted later, and I've got to attach the last of those skulls!
What could this be?

For the first time ever, I want a dreadknight. Your version of them is stunningly good!

One of my favorite parts of this hobby is getting to look at my finished army painted and coated together as a group. With miniatures like that, if you're anything like me, then your having a pretty good time right now. Nice job.

kestral - Thanks! I think it's biggest problem is the real DK kit only has 2 skulls! I mean what self respecting 40k vehicle doesn't have skulls?
MeatShield - Thanks! You're right the feeling of looking at that thin line of silver is pretty awesome
mekbadzappa - Thanks!
Well no fancy display base is complete without a cool backdrop so here we go!
But wait was there something in the passageway?
A taste of things to come?

That's really cool.... wow.
Are you making this display for some specific event?
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Gitsplitta - Yeah I went to wargames con.
I ended up with a 29 out of 30 for my painting score. Best painted went to this grey knight army
Some more WIP for y'all!
Another Batch of special weapons
And Crowe

Post by: Foda_Bett
Work continues on Crowe!
Crowe's base
I've found a decent base for it with fire coming up from slate that resembles the other bases I've painted so far.
I'll be highlighting the white areas to look like fire.
And I picked up a finecast techmarine for some grenade shenanigans.
I ended up having to take the techmarines left arm back as well as a few servitor parts.

Beautiful work Foda... that much white is hard to do as cleanly as you've accomplished.

MajorTom11 - Thanks! No drugs, I've just found that I can put a color down a day at work during lunch, which leads to a nearly finished squad each week. The warhounds are waiting for me to get up enough courage to reprime the nose piece and torso.
HAZZER - Thanks!
Vindicare finished and based!
Techmarine finished and based!
The GKs from last post waiting metal touchups, backpacks, and bases.

Dakka_Dok - Thanks! It was a bunch of work but I think it came out great!
Well the other night I was able to get 10 psycannons touched up and based!
Next up for them is decals and backpacks!
I also touched up all of the GKs that needed it from the last month, and moved another batch of GKs to my paint station from work (few final colors and they'll be done), and put a new batch in my to work bin (got the sepia applied today at lunch).

Whats best though is that you dont sacrifice quality for speed! Keep it up Foda.

Well I've slowly been amassing a collection of Aegis defense lines (minus the autocannons) from people who build hydras or psyrifile dreads. I'll be using them as defense lines in apoc for that fat 3+ cover save (2+ with camo cloak )
Over the last few nights I've been cleaning off the mold lines and sprue chunks.
I've also been painting some more GKs
I got my contemptor dread in the mail, like most people though it was missing its shoulder pads so I'm going to have to wait on building it

That is a lot of walls! Your army is shaping up quite nicely
40213
Post by: DiDDe
Now that's a whole lot of barricades ;D can only amagine how fed up you will get by painting them! xD
Too bad about the contemptor.. how long until you can get some new pads?
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
kenshin620 - Thanks!
DiDDe - Thanks! I'll be painting them in the same method as the walls of the castle (thus many drybrushes) so they should go quick. Forgeworld sent me an email that they'll get a replacement shoulders out to me soon.
Well last night I got the barricades and some bases primed!

Some of y'all may remember the 4 dreadnoughts I painted for the 3rd Company earlier. Well I've decided to finish off the entire company (infantry wise).
So last month (while painting GKs) I assembled all of my infantry, all of the jetpacks have brass etch U's and squad numbers.
Assault marines and packs
Close up of gap filling and etch
Flamers at the ready
72 marines ready for prime
Close up of some models
2 HQs
2 dreads to finish off the 6 for the company
I'm also working on the 9 speeders of the 2nd company
Well last night I was able to get my infantry primed, and assault packs ready to prime.
Ready for priming
Post priming
It took 2 stick loads to get them all primed.
Assault packs ready to go
Don't worry the GKs are not being put on hold. This is just a project to keep me painting while they're drying, like the aegis defence lines were.
Speaking of which, the aegis are done. I'll get some pictures later.

Yeesh. That's some quick work. I guess I've got quite a ways to go in terms of speed (still refinishing half of 1 company over the course of a year or 2 ). I'm just painting 1 or 2 marines here and there and you go and build/ prime an entire company! Well, back to the slow painting table for me, I suppose.
Kaesar II

Post by: Foda_Bett
Lord Kaesar II - Thanks! Well the company took about a month to build so it wasn't too fast. Most of the models were second hand so some were 1/2 built.
Last night I was able to get 2 "batches" of marines blue washed.
Batch 1
Batch 2 and remaining grey marines
And some pics of the finished defense lines

Post by: Lord Kaesar II
Still an indecent speed. In the past month I've built... 3, maybe 5 models? And then there's also the huge painting queue I have sitting right in front of me. I should actually do some painting sometime...
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Lord Kaesar II - I know the feeling. It actually made me start this blog. Staring at all the unpainted horde... in front of the unbuilt horde. Constant remarks from my friends about how they have all their 20,000+ points painted helped too.
For the Ultramarines I got another 1.5 batches done last night!
And on the Grey Knights I got the metals and washes finished on the next to last batch of PA GKs

So many marines....
Very ambitious project and I really like how your progressing with it!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Knightley - Thanks!
Last night i was able to wash the final Ultramarines, and not take pictures!
On the GK front the PA GKs have been touched up!
Now I know what you're thinking, cute John you moved them onto a different shelf, but I assure that all of the black bits where the primer was showing threw are all corrected!

Time for some more ultra work!
I have finished the washing and begun the drybrushing
The batch I did last night!
The chaplain got some more colors as I waited for GKs to dry
The chaplain will not have his black armor wash applied till he is nearly finished.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Drybrushing is done! I've also applied the basecoat for reds.

Post by: Foda_Bett
Last night I got some GK backpacks and my assault marine backpacks primed.

This is not fair I don't have the money to buy a pack of Cadia shock troops to paint. And here you are.. Painting 2 armys at the same time!! I hate u!!
looking good btw
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
DiDDe - Thanks! The GKs are mainly 2nd hand, the marines are ALL 2nd hand.
Well the backpacks got basecoated!
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well I've actually managed to get some more work done on the Ultras! The ribbing is painted, the ribbons are painted, the purity seals are painted, the pouches are painted, the grey basecoat for the white, and finished the metal basecoats!

DiDDe - Don't worry drilling gun barrels is coming!
Well last night while getting my models ready to take to work I dropped the entire 3rd company.
72 Tactical marines, 20 assault marines, 2 characters all fell about 8 feet onto a hard concrete floor. Many of the softer lead models are distorted, and about 80% of the models exploded or broke.
After 2 hours of repair I have the following
So I'll probably be spending the weekend repairing and finding new bits to replace the missing bits.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well I repaired the 3rd Company. I lost 1 bolter marine and 3 arms, while I was painting them I decided to replace the 2nd ed flamer marine with a new one and built and painted him. They got lenses, metal wash, purity seal highlights, rubber, and are now getting white highlights.
I've decided to put them on hold for just a bit to try and finish my storm blade for a contest this Saturday.
I've tried the zenitial highlighting with adeptus battle grey base, 3 to 1 with astro grey on the sides, and 2 to 1 on the tops.
I then hit it with lines of Rotting Flesh. I'm actually going to redo all my tanks this way. IT may take longer (and a while to repaint the currently painted ones) but it works better and is easier to control than the armory grey.
I'm going to do the plasma cannon like GW did the dreadknight sword, with the white being on the end of the barrel, blue to black going back towards the tank.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
In a flurry of painting last night I was able to get most of the details done on the Stormblade
I tried airbrushing the plasma coils like the many youtube videos show on the dreadknight sword but I couldn't pull it off, so I went for progressive drybrushing
I used some stowage to hide the HORRIBLE missing pieces in the forgeworld kit
I decided to keep the large single fuel tanks for my Fortress of Arrogance and simply put the normal fuel tanks on the Stormblade

Nice work so far The plasma coils look great. keep it up

My condolences on your third company, Hazzer. Those kind of things are the worst. I know how you feel, though. One of my Grey Hunters broke in half during a game last week, and that's about the same as an entire company. Right, guys?
Excellent work on the Stormblade, btw! Good attention to detail and great weathering! Have you thought about doing any OSL from the plasma cannon? (I feel like I'm suggesting OSL a lot these days...)
Keep it up!
Cheers,

Post by: Foda_Bett
DiDDe - Thanks! Rawson - Thanks! But 1 grey hunter does not equal a company I'm trying 1 thing at a time. Weathering on this one maybe OSL on the next. Although if I have glowing plasma coils it'll look weird when I swap the weapon. I got the rotting flesh applied to the baneblade this weekend, and I dropped the Stormblade off last night at Hobby Town Dallas' Super Heavy contest http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v314/Foda_Bett/Travels/2011%20Hobby%20Town%20Dallas%20Super%20Heavy%20Contest/ I've got some stiff competition.

I do hope the sarcasm and comic relief of that comment was accurately conveyed by the astropaths...

Yes, I can see what you mean. That would look quite out of place...

Rawson - hopefully my em-ork-icon showed my sarcasm.
The only "hunter" that's equal is a "Ultra Hunter" which will be in my Pre-Heresy Ultras/Space Wolves.
I got the metals down on the baneblade.
I'll have some touch ups with the grey and flesh but can't get over that airbrushed metals.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Well 2 rounds of good news!
1)I was able to get the flesh and greys cleaned up on the baneblade, and get it decaled and detailed
Next up is stowage then weathering, then Imperial Wrath will join Imperius Dominatus in my super heavy tray.
2) I won the painting contest!!
1st: FodaBett, Imperial Guard Stormblade. $65 towards any GW Kit
2nd: Tyranid Heirodule $40 towards any GW Kit
3rd: SpellBound, Emperor's Children Reaver Titan $25 towards any GW Kit

I do love how realistic the models look when they're airbrushed. Your camo patterns are spot on! Maybe that $65 can go towards another superheavy
Keep up the good work!

DiDDe - Thanks!
Rawson - Thanks! I'll be putting the $ towards razorbacks. I own 15k of painted ultramarines but no transports other than land raiders.
Imperial Wrath got a heck of a lot of damage, and a good bit of stowage. I wasn't able to get it as clean and needed a way to "write off" the weird misaligned parts.
I still need to drybrush the tracks and add the sand.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Announcing the latest (oldest) Baneblade to roll off my painting table! Imperial Wrath
With that finished I grabbed 3 sentinels and gave them a quick painting.
Red Sentinel Squad nearly finished.
I'm going to add a bit of stowage, weathering, some basing, and they'll be good to go.
273
Post by: Foda_Bett
Last night I turned red squad into red company
I think I'm going to store them now and move onto blue company. I usually like to base things all at once, so I will probably base and finishing weathering the sentinels all together.
I also gave the motley pile of marines
red shoulder rims!
Next up is blue touch ups!
