I've seen these guys randomly from time to time but hadn't actually seen the blog. That being said, seeing the whole army as it stands and your upcoming units, all I have to say is WOW! I'm personally a huge fan of the more obscure chapters, especially when they're done so masterfully as this army.
I reallllllyyyy want to see that biker done, he's looking amazing already!

Thanks for the comments folks!
The head is from Maxmini, picked up a set of them and some other stuff a while back and this if the first project I've made use of their stuff. Big big fan.
Here's where the bike is right now:
Still a bunch more to do. Clean up the black, highlight the black, pick out details, weather a little bit more using some paint washes and my weathering compact. Should be done by the end of the day! Stay tuned ^_-.

Heh, thanks Cosmic, didn't know I was ever really 'gone' though ^_-.
C P, the yellow is done one of two ways, bestial brown > german camo orange ochre > yellow ochre OR German Camo Orange Ochre > Gryphonne Sepia Washed into crevices > Yellow Ochre. Final highlight (very very small highlights) with Dark Flesh. All Vallejo Model Color except Bestial Brown of course.

Looks great mate and good to see you back at the SOM's!
A couple of minor points though. Aside from the bit of a misaligned front fairing, the gold on the trim looks a little shiny and clean when compaired to the yellow camo scheme with the chipping etc.
A little damage on the trim would look good too and help unify the appearance.
Otherwise, looks great, the chipping looks brilliant, no mean feat on a camo scheme!
Cheers,

Hey guys, thanks for the comments!
The grass I'm using for this army is GF9's Arid Grass. As for the SW's I've painted up, I've only painted two, but for both it was Shadow Grey followed by a Space Wolves Grey highlight. And no, they're not stencils ^_-. All hand done. I do use a guide for my chapter badges though in the form of a water transfer with paint applied over top.

Post by: grey_death
Thanks a ton for all of the kind words guys. Some replies:
Savnock, I hope to have the chipping tutorial going within the next two weeks. The paint chip effect really is one of the major style choices I made when I first started this force. It's what makes everything look well together even when painted in completely different color schemes!
Metsuri, I felt the boys in green deserved a ride as well, and a standard razorback is a steal for the points ^_-. The black chipped spots definitely stand out a bit more, and as such I tried to limit it a bit more in those spots. Soot is just my Tamiya Weathering Compact soot smeared on using the sponge side of the applicator tool!
Migs, Thanks ^_^. I definitely think it could do for another dusting along the skirts. I put a bit of it on those areas already, but it just wasn't enough to stand out and look how it should.
frogboy, Dust and dirt and grime and damage is what this force is all about ^_^. So it'll definitely catch a bit more dust to drive that point home!
Northern, Thanks ^_^, as mentioned it'll get some dusting, likely just some bleached bone drybrush. I also take a different view on exhaust pipes than many. All of the vehicles I ever worked with in the military had caps or downward facing exhaust, since these face up it would mean they'd need a cap to keep water and other fluid out ^_-.
Shaman, thanks, it's funny because I really don't put a lot of thought into the staining, it's very organic and based on what is there and what paint chipping/damage is in the section I'm working on!

Getting a new model for my Sons of Medusa army finished is always a great feeling. This is the army that I fell in love with from the start. It's a hard color scheme, Scorpion Green and White aren't exactly colors that beginners should handle very much let alone build an army on! Now with the release of Imperial Armor 10, they have a developed background and a brand new allure. This guy was just one of a few wargear options I had laying around that didn't make it into the final army list. Now that I'm back at the boys in green, I'm digging through my collection of bits and models looking to build an entire squad around him. I've been lucky enough to find enough to put just that many models together, and am considering picking up the collectors range Iron Hands Tactical Squad from GW for a ton of great bionic bits and bobs that would do wonders for the look of the army. Oh, and that special character from IA10 might be in the making if I can come up with the right bits! All in all I'm extremely happy with how this guy came out, and while I was at it I went ahead and painted the chapter badge on the tactical multi-melta marine I was using as a rough guide. I still have to go through and do that for most of the rest of the army, but with how easy it went on with these two I don't suspect it would take more than a day to get done, now if I could just find the time!
17916
Post by: Miss Dee
I have been told he is going to be done by FW, when is the Question. asked by me as they keep messing around and bring out other stuff.
for the IH bits have a look at bits sites like Bits and Kits.

Good to see you back in the Saddle GD, your Sons of Medusa were one of the very first things that really inspired me to try and improve my painting technique. They're really phenomenal.
Look forward to seeing more in the near future.

Post by: grey_death
Dee, I'm very interested in seeing what FW would do with that character. The chances for a crazy awesome model are many. FW is good about characters being well detailed but not overly so, so odds are I would be making a purchase . Would give me a reason to pick up a character conversion set as well, full of nifty bionics.
Git, Thanks for the compliment I always love seeing people take a little from what I've been doing and work it into their own models. If you search for Sons of Medusa in the Dakka Gallery, there is a whole set of SoM from another Dakkanaut with some strikingly similar to my own . Love where your army is going btw, that latest dread had me thinking twice about not going after another dreadnought for my army!

GD,
Nice to see some more SoM coming out. Between an old love of them myself, IA10 and this thread the Sons are going to be my next project.

Slave, If you haven't yet seen the Sons entry in IA10, I highly suggest it. I've got a few new ideas from it in the couple of minutes I had with the book. Loyalist marines are only as fun and crazy as you make them. And I'm happy to help you out of that extra money you had laying about
MT11, Thanks bud .
M D, I'd love to see the transfers come out. I don't know that I'd bother at this point though. I think my method works pretty well for the army.
Cosmic, Good to have people who have been following this one for so long replying . I full well plan to keep at this army, especially once I get a few new units going.

Heh, saying white and lime freakin green are not colors for beginners is a bit of an understatement, no? I also recommend beginners stay away from juggling chainsaws and gargling Draino.
The army continues to impress, as does the care you put into every one of the green buggers.

Post by: Lennysmash
At last, a welcome return to the boys in green. Lovely work as always GD. What other diabolical plans do you have for the army? Any more dreads or vehicles to bolster the force?
372
Post by: grey_death
Wehrkind, I think you're right! Here's to ridiculous color schemes painted by crazies!
Lennysmash, More vehicles are indeed in the future. Another Land Raider is in the box waiting patiently, and I'm considering a command razorback as well. Dreads I think I have enough at two for the moment, but with that new ironclad model by FW it's hard to say no to them should I buy anything from FW in the future :p
For now though....
++++++++++++++
I was able to salvage a set of terminators I had considered beyond help. They were caked with VERY stuck on sprays and when I tried to strip it away it just chipped unevenly instead, so to the bits bin they went for the last year plus! Then I started to think this week that maybe they weren't as bad off as I had thought, so I pulled them out and got to fixing them as best I could. I first scraped away the big flat areas some and did a test spray with some sandable auto primer and was pleasantly surprised that it looked quite alright. There were a few pits but I'm sure they will fade away a little with the weathering steps of my paint scheme!
I also put a purchase I had made when I started the army to use at last. I managed to model my Black Lotus tribe shields in place of the regular storm shields. I used some random left hands from various arms I had laying in my old used bits bin and wire and some green stuff to the back of the shields to add a little extra detail. I also modified the shield faces to create some variety, as there are only three designs in the set. I plan on free handing a good amount on the cleaner shields.
And thanks to AgeofEgos I was able to finally get some shoulder pads for the squad I've had in limbo for almost as long as I've had that messed up set of termies! They will be getting armed with lightning claws and likely end up in various mixes of LC/ TH to create my termie squads.
I'll probably take the airbrush to the primed termies, likely dust with white first and then hit them with scorpion green. I'm going to try and skip the PS-8 Spray this round as I've done it on other models (the dreadnoughts didn't catch the spray base color) and see how things work out. With the airbrush getting that first coat is much much easier.
Looking forward to finally getting a squad to dump out of that big bad land raider of mine...

Post by: IceAngel
Very cool GD. I love the weathering you've mastered on your guys. What are your plans for the shields? Are you going to paint on the Sons of Medusa emblem on there or lots of battle damage? Do you think you'll ever paint any more of your yellow camo desert guys?
18474
Post by: Darth Bob
WOW what a fantastically painted army. The green is probably the best green I've ever seen grace the surface of a marine model. I think I'd lose any game against these for the sheer fact I'd be too busy gawking at the models to pay attention to the actual play of the game.
P.S.
Where in Maryland are you at grey_death? I'm also in MD.
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
Sounds great Grey, thanks for the update will you be magnetising the LC termies or are you just going for the one load out?
I'm looking forward to the vehicles immensely, and don't worry no-one will blame you if you cave into desire with the FW Ironclad.
All the best.
372
Post by: grey_death
IceAngel, I am planning to do some freehand work on them where there are clean areas. I think an old school sons emblem will find it's way on one . They'll likely catch a little battle damage as well. As for the desert camo, I'm sure it will make another appearance, but it just comes down to the appropriate unit type to use it on. I don't want to overuse it and want to keep it to recon style units.
Darth Bob, Thanks for the compliment They actually fair well enough without the bonus of distracting my opponents A lot of big guns to do lots of damage . I'm on the west side of the state along 270.
Lennysmash, I'll likely just go with straight LC's, magnetizing was in the works when I originally started them but decided I don't care now that I have 10 guys and can mix up the load outs a little within that group. And I'm sure no one would blame me, except my wife when she realizes I bought another $50+ model!!

Ahhh Grey. You're putting my Sons to absolute shame! I'm closely following this to get some ideas and inspiration in the transformation of my DIY chapter to Sons of Medusa, and you are more than keeping me occupied. Its sad that I can't keep up with your talent, but your marines are a great measure.
I have some questions though:
I am seriously lacking in basing experience. Any tips?
Also, I'm having trouble painting meltas and plasma weapons with a satisfactory look. Any tips there as well? Your meltas look great. That burn look is really what I'm after.
372
Post by: grey_death
Miss Dee, I haven't actually modeled a land raider in a while now. I'll likely be using rubber bands and some vice style clamps to hold it all together while its drying.
Dante, I'm dying to see how the green looks on theses beastly boys. I'll likely keep most of the scheme the same with a few additional black areas here and there. The shields will catch some cogs, a throwback Sons emblem and whatever other cool ideas I can come up with . I'm looking at Greek hoplite shields as inspiration. Actually really excited about them.
Cypher, Thanks for the complement. For basing, you should head to this tag on my site, it might help out some. For the meltas I used gryphonne sepia really heavily in a few coats to make it darker than my usual gold version of that method.
++++++++++
I was able to get the termies greened!
Used the airbrush to spray them with some white and then hit them with scorpion green. Wash comes up next of Thraka Green, going to keep it very controlled rather than slather it all over the model. Cleaning it up and getting crisp armor joins should be easier that way.

Stunning figure GD... you do that light green better than anyone. And the chipping system you have is just so convincing. One of these days I'm going to get up the nerve to give it a go on my figures, but you know the deal... do it on one and you have to do it on all of them. *gulp*
Love the shield... cant believe how fine the work on the laurel is... is that dry brushed over black? The whitish accents in the middle really set it apart.
Top notch work (as one would expect)!

Truly inspiring, everything looks absolutely fantastic The desert gentlemen break up the harsh (yet striking) green beautifully, the colors are incredibly crisp and clean, the whole thing feels so coherent, it's interesting to look at... I could go on!
In short, just looking through these pictures made my toes curl with excitement

The weathering on the green is so good that the blacks weathering pales in comparison. what do you do for the black, because from these pics it looks like it needs more to bring it on par...

Gits, The biggest step is just having at one of the models and figuring things out. If you're considering it, have at a spare model in the scheme! It'll be liberating to have at that clean fresh canvas of a model with the weathering brush As for the shield, the laurel is done using successive wash/drybrushes. The things at the middle are supposed to be battle damage but apparently I didn't do a very good job at making that apparently . I'll likely go back through on the shield and rework it a little. I think it needs some depth.
Josh, Thanks, the desert models are there exactly for that reason. It's always nice to hear from folks seeing the army for the first time too, it brings fresh perspective and excitement to the project.
Northern, Thanks bud I hope to get at least the armor done by the next week. Detailing will likely take yet another. So hopefully within two weeks I'll have them ready for the battlefield.
Imp Monkey, I do think the shield needs additional work now. It just comes out too flat. I've got far more experience in weathering the green than the black
Miss Dee, are you doing a Badab force?

Thought I'd step out of the shadows to say how much I like the vibrant green you do, and how good they look once you get them finished. I'd never be able to pull off that bright a color.

You know... to me the black almost looks like the sheen on black marble or obsidian... which on it's own would be really cool... just a thought.
I've noodled around with your damage on the first of the new mantis warriors I painted. I think it looks OK but I don't have as good a grip on it as you do. Not just the mechanics of painting it but the concept of where to put the damage... etc. I'll try it again though once I can relax in my painting a bit, it's too good an effect not to try to master.

whale, come out of the shadows more often! More response leads to more enthusiasm on my part to keep the project on the hot plate. With a vibrant color like this, it really comes down to all of the decisions AFTER the main color is laid out. The battle damage MAKES this scheme, no ifs ands or buts about that. If I didn't weather them, people wouldn't be responding so positively to it. The color is toned down so much by all of the colors that de-saturate the color by drawing focus away from it. Yay color theory! >.>
Git, I had considered using a marble when I had originally built the concept of the Sons, but it just didn't make it into the final project design. I think just redoing the color of the damage can really help. As for the weathering, take a look at some of the placement with mine, a lot of it is around edges and outer flat areas. Finding something that gives a good 'pattern' is helpful too. I have a really gnarly old brush that I use a lot for this, most of the bristles are stuck together at this point but it seems to work just right most of the time. I did use a sponge bit on this guy as well though for a few smaller areas. Plus, I didn't get good at the effect until about half way through my army . The vehicles helped as well in that regard!
Miss Dee, Best of luck! Just find somewhere in the house with regular lighting (kitchen is a good spot) and bring a piece of white paper for the background propped up against a cup! You don't need anything crazy when taking photos. As to paint stations, I wouldn't have any advice, I've never used one I use a cutting mat as my catch all and that's about it! Hope your project goes well and if you can get hold of an airbrush or a perfect shade of spray paint, it will save you a TON of time. Just be careful with your wash (should take at least two to three touches for most areas) and you should be able to cut armor time in half as it's just touch ups after it's dry.

Hey Grey, awesome work, but I have one quick question... On page 8, how did you get the color on the desert support unit? Not the finished one, but the one that is tan with brown trim(First picture on page eight, the one on the right). I've been searching for a color like that for a while to use for my own legion of desert marines.

Hey all, Sorry I didn't get back to replying right away! Things stepped up for classes a little and I haven't had a ton of time to the hobby side!
Dee, I'll likely do some scratch bionic work for any termie bionics. I'm not certain that they'll see it right now, but I do have a squad still in modeling phase that could be the benefactors of my want for serious bionics.
Cypher, thanks, as for gaming with the army, they are actually very solid in game. I win a good amount with them, I'm dying to try out the termies though!
Saintspirit, thanks for reading The army has come a long way from that first AoBR model slathered with scorpion green!
logg_frogg, thanks, there are a ton of ways to get to a result, finding the ones that are quick and effective is the biggest trick.

Some work done on the termies:
Posted on TPC as well
Bunches to do still but they're coming along nicely! Can't get too bogged down with any one thing when doing a squad, so I try to keep them moving around a lot when I paint them. Terminators have a ton of surface area to paint, I felt like I was spending as much time as I do painting a vehicle on these guys.
Got a bunch of bionic bits too for a new tactical squad I'm dying to get to modeling the new squad!! Stay tuned for more!

MajorTom11, I'm sure it has to do with all of the classes I've been taking , the stuff I learn there is likely seeping slowly into my hobby stuff!
joshoftheforest, I did try to get a medusa head going but it just didn't fit the color scheme I had going and the design I used didn't work out the way I hoped. Instead I went with the hand symbol from third edition for that shield. The snake was done because it fits the medusa theme though and is a little more subtle which I like a lot!
darkkt, thanks! I would update all of the project logs with the same info, but it does take a lot of time, so TPC catches a few more WIP's from time to time. Thanks for reading

inmygravenimage, It's hard to keep up 100% with the PLog's on Dakka sometimes! There are so many great projects out there right now on Dakka and I love how much more developed this section has become over the last few years . Thanks for the compliment on the project!
GiraffeX, Thanks! Start slow with your weathering and get a handle on how the marks go onto the model before jumping into a full squad weathering project! You can't hit the 'undo' if you mash the sponge or brush into details that you didn't want to muck up!
Savnock, Thanks for that. I just sent the maxmini guys a PM here on Dakka with a link to the termies to show them off and thank them for a great product I don't think there are any rules against sharing what people have used your products for, it's the act of marketing them 'improperly' that people seem to go after. And yeah, salvaged from the brink to become a big chunk of my army I love it!

I like this guy, but I mean that does not seem to be a lot to model onto one 40mm base unless he has some crazy servo arm action going on.
But I do like that Devestators get FNP if they are modelled with cybernetics if he is included into the army list.

I'm gonna have to say Land Speeder, I'd love to see what you do with it!

Post by: Knightley
Speeder for sure!
372
Post by: grey_death
Hrm, Special seems to have a good amount of support, and the speeder was something we've been talking about here for almost as long as I've had the Desert scheme going
So, It's between those two:
Special Character - I'm up in the air as to just which character to model here. Lysander comes to mind, but I could also use the Khan on bike to create a recon captain, or make my Desert Support squads scoring with Kantor! There are a lot of different options. I'm straying away from putting together the Special from IA10 as I'm hopeful that FW will bring one out in the future!
Speeder - Would be a Desert Support Speeder akin to the Razorback in those colors. Part of the recon forces that have built up slowly since I started the army I'm very aware of the chance to create a possible 500 point army of Recon that could go into battle alone! This would fit that theme very nicely. The Khan would be a must!
Thoughts?

Well if you really are partial to that recon army then by all means get that speeder and khan ready to go. Personally though I'd like to see your skill applied to a lavish special character, but White Scars don't do it for me. I'm leaning towards Kantor.

Post by: grey_death
I should mention that any specials I end up painting would be of the 'count as' variety, meaning I would model them myself with the appropriate weaponry so they fit more with the current army
M Dee, I got my transfers from B&C and printed them myself.
Unanything, thanks for dropping in and thanks for the compliments! I'm still up in the air on whether to wait FW out to see if they produce the special for the Sons or not. I have a few things in mind for what I would do to create him but nothing concrete yet.
Josh, I like working more with freehanding at this point than using pre-modeled overdetailing that GW seems to enjoy so much. See above for my comment on Specials for the army
Cypher, If I do indeed end up getting enough bikes together for the recon force, then I think the khan would be a good spot for me to dig in, but right now I don't have enough for a full troop squad just yet. Again, see my specials comment at the top!
Still up in the air right now but taking 'votes' on what to do
As a bonus I've started thinking about what I would model a Lysander with and I've come up with using FW's Commander Culln as the base model. I think it could be a great pose with a big hammer and shield
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage

Very nice man. Been a while since I was excited about 40k, but that terminator is just about enough to do it. I absolutely adore the Grecian style shield; if I get back into marines somehow, I will now have to get Roman scutum style stormshields to compensate
The smaller chest shield really was a good idea too. Doesn't look like it would get in the way of his arms as much as the other one certainly.
And good god, seeing those base coated marines the first thought in my head was "I wonder if he wears a lead skirt over his junk when working with those..." Looks just like the uranium rod from the opening of the Simpsons.

Post by: grey_death
Thanks folks Proetus just caught an additional spray to help smooth out the basecoat a little and will likely catch green tonight once that's had a chance to dry a bit more.
Wehrkind, I'm almost certain I've seen those shields around at 28mm. Storm shield swaps are one of the best changes you can make for Marines, I've never been a fan of the original design and when this project came along it was one of the first things I knew I would swap out when I got to it As for the green, I'll likely have to get some additional screening... o.o...
Tom, WIP's abounds for this one. Can't wait to get him going!!
39693
Post by: -Cypher-
I must say that I had reservation as to the Proteus model, but with the addition of the thunder hammer arm and servo-skull, the model's wide pose really assuaged them. The model is coming together nicely, and I can't wait to see the color schemes you put into the details.
With regards to the rhino, I love the idea of moving away from a fully green vehicle. The green stripe is refreshing and should fit in quite well when with the entire army on the table. I look forward to seeing just what kind of alternate paint scheme you give it in the end.
One question though, how heavy do you wash the thraka green over the models? Could you offer a few comments on that bit of the painting process for me? I'll be adding that step to my marines very soon.
Great work as always and do keep it up! Happy painting!

Cypher, Thanks for the vote of confidence with the finished Proetus. His open swing really gives him the weight I wanted and makes him feel much more imposing than even the regular termies.
The Razorback will be a fun diversion, but not something that's going to catch paint for a few weeks I think. Maybe once I get the wargear and Proetus out of the way.
The thraka wash is applied selectively and I try to get it heavy in the recessed detail while staying as clear as I can of the clean armor areas. If it's on the spots that are supposed to be pure scorpion green I just clean it up, but steering clear of them in the first place saves a lot of time. The use of bleached bone as a highlight gives them the depth that they lack after just the wash.
Hope that helps

Miss Dee wrote:He looks good G_D, do you think I should use some servo arms for some of my squad leaders?
I've thought about using servo arms on more models around the army, but honestly think it's a touch too much for the average squad leader to have. I could see a Devastator sergeant with one, or (after a talk with a guy at a geedub shop) a medic using one. I tend to use older style armors or metallic hand/bionics to help denote squad leaders.

Thanks guys The green definitely gets a lot of attention. It just doesn't feel 'right' though until it's fully weathered and the model is done! The early shots definitely have a radioactive feel to them
direwolf, Welcome to Dakka! Glad I could lure another to the fold Automatically Appended Next Post: Added bonus:
Shot some new pics of the Desert Support Squad to submit to GW's Elite Week. I did some additional work on them adding the Chapter Badge and even a cog detail to one of the Heavy Bolter guys.

I'm in much the same boat as Direwolf. I was searching around the internet for something? (to do with minis) and Bam! I stumbled across pics of this army on GD's friday night blog which led me here.
This army has completely inspired me to start 40K and a space marine army. Thanks for that. Any chance on giving a link to where you get information on step by step for making transfers? Got the download earlier but I'm in the dark as to how it goes from print paper to a transfer on the model?
I can't wait to see more of these.
17916
Post by: Miss Dee
Get some transfer paper from any art shop, and then prit it out and I think you have to varnish it (Tho im not 100% on the last bit.)

Post by: grey_death
Styro, It's all about checking your pattern on a piece of paper a few times to learn what it's looking like. If you can't get it to work, try roughing up your sponge more and test it again. Don't jump right into using it on a marine before you have a better handle on how it applies.
Craaag, Glad I could help empty your wallet It's always a great feeling to know I've inspired a new army or reinvigorated someones old force. Here is what I used when I made my decals. If you have a decal that is predominantly white, remember that your regular printers don't print white on paper so you'll have to free hand that in with the decal as a guide!

LOL, I was all excited when I found your army then I saw the price of a Landraider and 5 terminators.....

Those shields are great I especially liked the traditional grecian pottery style on the decoration it looks a lot like several from the British Museum. I'm of two minds about the head on the Lord though it looks a bit deformed to me but I take it its a bare head with bionics not a helm?

Thanks guys. I'm really happy with how the shield came out. The rest of the model came together nicely as well. I was hoping the head I chose would come together much nicer than it did. It was indeed a little cludgy of a sculpt, but I am going to stick with it now that it's painted up. I think the rest of the model carries him quite nicely.

GiraffeX, Thanks for the compliment I'm sure there was more that could have been done TO the model, but for the little bit of conversion work I did do, he came out nice and different with only a few hours spent in the modeling phase!
Dante, Thanks bud. I'm really glad the feel I was going for comes through with them. It's 2nd ed color thinking with some hints toward military modeling. As for what is next on the agenda, I'm really not sure! I have a LOT of stuff that could go into the army. It's just finding the thing that catches me next and getting it worked on. Good stuff g_d as always. I wish my paint-rate was anything even close to yours. I'm averaging a mini a week or less. *sniffle*

Post by: grey_death
I've messed with LBursleys old washes, and that's the recipe the new Secret Weapon stuff is based on. They're much more suspension than solution, but shaken up properly they're actually quite nice. A little more work than GW's stuff, but with a lot more variety now that misterjustin has had his way with them and added a ton of color variety.
No experience with anything from AK though. I should see if I can't get some of their stuff, I've heard Mig Jimenez talk about the company before on his blog. So they have to have some good stuff Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks Cypher, I wish I was doing more painting than I have been though! We all do the best we can. I find its important not to push too much, or painting gets to be a burden more than an enjoyment. Paces rise and fall, but as long as you're getting stuff done that you're happy with that's all that matters.
22687
Post by: MajorTom11
Im not a huge wash dude, I think I will pass on the SW, at least for now.
Vet Sg Ezekiel recommended the AK stuff, he says he gets similar results to oils, minus the mega drying time... I think I will have a go with those too

My favourite has to be Proiteus though, for me you nailed it right there. Not only the fantastic detail work but i feel hes the one that really epitomises the IH successor theme.
372
Post by: grey_death
Thanks all, I really appreciate the kind words. It's been such a great project up to this point and I'm still looking forward to putting more finished models on the table still!
Wehrkind, The shields were one of those details I knew from the first model that I would be using. It only took me over two years to get a unit of them built! The army looks like it's a ton of points doesn't it? But really, what you see painted only ends up being about 1780 points! When I get the next set of stuff complete though I'll be well into the 2250 range and think I'll get around 2500 points by the time I'm about 'finished' with additions to the army.
IceAngel, honestly, I haven't fought that many fully painted armies so I haven't bothered taking many action photos. But thanks to your inquiry, I did notice I hadn't posted a small set I took when playing against my friend Pesmerga's Ultramarines! I'll add them at the end of this post!
Gits, I'm glad you think so Badab War folks are a special breed of insane. I like to think I've done the conflict justice and inspired more people to take the plunge with one of the extremely characterful armies that took part in the war.
Cypher, see my reply to Wehrkind for the points Thanks for the compliments.
Vitruvian, Thanks for that, Proetus was sort of the culmination of ideas and conversions. All of the work done to that point found it's way into his paint and modeling choices
++++++++++++++++++
For those of you looking for a few in action shots I give you The Sons of Medusa in actions against rogue elements of what appeared to be Ultramarines:
The action was swift and decisive with the Sons Terminator unit wading into combat and destroying much of the resistance single handed. An intervention by the Inquisition stayed the hand of the Sons of Medusa before more blood was shed, but the blood feud was begun, and the seeds of hatred sowed between these two proud chapters.

Agreed. Perhaps a battle report could be in the pipe soon? Yes, yes.
4670
Post by: Wehrkind
Wow, sub 1800? Damn... that looks like a lot more, though I suppose I have a full unit of assault marines in my force that soak up a mess of points, so it probably is about right.
Been a while since I have played 40k, can't even guess points by looking these days!
372
Post by: grey_death
Thanks guys. I'm not sure if/when I'd do a battle report. I'm a touch impossible when it comes to the quality that I would expect if I were to do a battle report. Fully painted forces and fully modeled and painted terrain as well would be a must for something like that. Though you could definitely expect another army photo shoot should I get enough completed that it warranted one
Wehr, It's rather surprising to me as well. I played DiscoVader a few weeks back now and was truly taken aback by how much I could fit into a 1750 list! I'm certain it's the transports that make it feel like a much beefier list than it really is. When you start plopping down a lot of armor people start to look at you funny Especially when you're rolling a most of those same units under 1k!

Indeed, that makes quite a nice force for 1750...

Post by: grey_death
I think if I painted one army for 5 digits worth of pointage I'd be trying to eat a gun around the end of the 4 digits
Trust me, this army has a lot of directions it can still go. Namely the Desert Support section which as I had mentioned, I fully intend to go with at least a full force org for. I would expect that a Khan and some bikes would help to fill that out, but it's always safe to think that some tacticals with rhino's could also help in that regard. Who knows though. I'm all ears on how to make that work and work well
Still to come though in green:
Another tactical squad, A Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer, Devastators
There is also a group of servitors somewhere in there along with the possibility of another Techmarine, though I'd likely try and convert him into the Sons of Medusa special character.
All the while that I'm planning and thinking about all of the Sons of Medusa goodness I could bring to the table, I've always got other armies to help break things up. Namely I have plans in my head for my Angels Sanguine to develop into a full fledged army. There are also my Orks...Some Eldar...A warband idea is rising in my head...Warriors of Chaos?...Skaven...Where am I?
I really shouldn't have to buy a whole lot for a long time...So much backlog it's kind of pathetic!

Just a small update to the army:
Servitor 23-14
A little gaming this past weekend and the thought hit me while looking at options for my Master of the Forge to consider using Servitors to help flesh out points on occasions. The added wounds and combat effectiveness could be useful especially when I'm hard pressed to find another spot to spend those points. At the very least they're extremely fluffy for the army to have on hand!
