The Sons of Medusa - A Badab War Log (Finished Servitor pg20) @ 2008/11/23 23:26:04

Post by: grey_death

Weakness can be removed. As we ply the stars we will carve it like a cancer from the flesh of the Imperium. The heretic and the traitor are weak of mind and of faith. Their life is ours to extinguish. To allow them respite is to invite their weakness to spread, to fail is unthinkable. Purge the Weak.

Welcome to the home thread of the Sons of Medusa Clan Mageara's Fifth Battle Group. This project started out as an army for the Bell of Lost Souls Badab War campaign book and what would have ultimately been a full blown campaign at what was then Battleforge Games in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, I ended up moving away prior to the campaign getting off the ground, but I was able to get some of the army featured in the actual campaign book that Bell of Lost Souls put together. In the end, I was left with what would end up being one of the most complete and developed army I'd ever worked on, and something truly special that constantly keeps me interested. A legacy project.

In the following pages, you can find the slow but sure development of the entire force. They are full of work in progress images, ideas, and finalized models. There are also links embedded within many that will redirect to my website, The Painting Corps. Many of the links will take you to a more elaborate breakdown on the techniques involved, the recipes for various parts of the models, and just a touch more insight into what else went into the model. Digging through the entirety of this thread should give you a better understanding as to just how I've gone about everything for the army, and really how long it has taken me to get the army built how I have wanted it.

I hope you enjoy the thread as much as I have enjoyed sharing the process with you all. It's always a privilege to have people read what I have to say, and I appreciate every view. Thank you for taking the time out of your day, night, morning to see what I've been up to!

WIP of A Son of Medusa:

My first model for my Badab War Campaign army, the Sons of Medusa.

I really need to get a new white primer, the one I have is pretty much garbage.

Now, if I could find Scorpion Green in a spray can.....

Looks good so far! Don't forget the red eyes. I played Sons of Medusa in 3rd edition. Never ran into someone else who did. Eventually sold the army. How many points do you have planned?

And here I was thinking of doing a small SoM force myself. Now they're sure to pale in comparison.

I look forward to seeing this progress.

Ok this is taking a little bit....But the results so far are worth it ^_^.

Grundel - I'm actually considering doing yellow eyes ^_-. As for points, we'll see. I'm just going to get this first 500 or so painted and go from there!

SoG - I would love to see your take on the Sons! We can swap notes.

Well I made some more progress. It's very slow going x.x...but hopefully I learned a few things here and there so far to make it go a bit smoother next time around.

Here is where we stand at the end of the night:

enmitee, I used Thraka Green for the armor and painted back up to scorpion green.

Looking pretty good. Whats most important to me, is that its easily recognizable as something other than a Salamander. The bright green really turned out nicely. Some of the details on the bolter (i.e. the eagle) seem to be getting lost, but Im assuming thats due to the white primer?

Since its a test model, I suppose youll keep the base the way it is, more elaborate bases would be cool tho.

PS: The yellow eyes work! Id continue with those!

awesome grey!! I wanted to do SoM but you beat me to it! I'm liking the green. I guess I'll stick with the idea of doing "the purge". green also but I like em cause they sound like an 80's punk band haha!

I like the base color. Rim it in black and you have a very nice frame for a green figure.

Looking very nice, Grey! Very attractive scheme, and you've pulled it off well. I'd like to see how you're going to do battle damage for this army, if at all. Badab War being what it was, seeing some damage on these guys would be nice, I think.

Hey all, Thanks for the replies!

Flach, The bolter is definitely losing some detail from the primer unfortunately. It's still got some work to be done though, so we might get some back with detail work ^_^. As for elaborate basing, maybe for the commander, but the rank and file guys aren't going to get much in the way of crazy basing. I'll save my super basing stuff for my 'Munda gang.

LBursley, SoM could use more allies! It's funny how many folks were considering this army at the same time.

Iffy, you read my mind on the black rim. I was looking at it this morning and came to that conclusion as well.

Grim, I am planning some battle damage. I think I'll be going with a dark green for the chipping and damage, hopefully it comes out alright! It'll be the first time I've done any damage in that manner.

Ah, dont get me wrong. The brown base is a great choice for the green fig, but it seemed rather bland. A stone here or there... some thicker gravel etc.
Im not talking monster bases will all kinds of stuff on them

Now that you guys mentioned it, a black rim would look awesome.

A deep boltgun/gunmetal color for the bolter might work out very nicely too, as it would be a dark yet different color from the trim and help set it off.

@ Flachzange - yes, I recognize that is what you meant.

I heard from higher-up why they were originally called the Sons of Medusa, mainly that the Studio thought the scheme was so -ing ugly.

Your take on it has put the lie to that statement, though. Well done.

I would leave the bolter black. different and clean. me likes. Also glad you went with the yellow eyes.. goes with the green.

I keep imagining awesome it would look if his helm was glossy... just the helm though.

Thanks of all of the comments folks ^_^ I really appreciate all of the feedback.

I spent some time at work yesterday finishing up the first model. He's still not 100% finished, he needs a chapter badge still (I'll be using printed decals for that), and I'm not 100% finished with the weathering just yet. But it gives you a much clearer image of what I'm going to be doing with them. Anyways enough talk, on with the pic!

Nicely done. I like the base, even though it's fairly plain. It's nice and neat and the color frames the figure nicely.

Looking great, but I think the lenses could use a really bright, crisp highlight around the bottom

Yes, the base came out really nice. Especially with the black rim, better than I thought.

The battle damage is looking superb as well.
ALl the chosen colors go very well together and Id really like to see a bigger force of these guys.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Aquila, I do have some plans to do some additional work on the eyes. I just want to stay away from the normal red everyone uses, so I've got to rework how I go about them some ^_^. I think some shading as well as a nice highlight is definitely in order still.

It looks good, if somewhat off balanced colourwise, I think. The one black shoulder pad is kind of distracting. I think if it was left green, and maybe a white tactical marking, it would look better. The painting itself is amazing, that's just my one qualm.

Another thing you could consider for the eye lenses is just to put down some gloss varnish over them.

Well, the problem is that red is a complimentary color to Green. Yellow isn't. Now, if you blended into or through orange with a red angle, perhaps it would "pop" out more. you could even go with a purple color too. with your green armor being more into the yellow spectrum, the best color for the eyes would be a violet/red or purple with a slant to red..

If you aren't following me, I am speaking of a color wheel. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=color+wheel&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title notice the colors opposite the greens. especially the yellow/green.. it's red/violet.

the following link gives a good understanding of how to use a colorwheel. http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/690-Color-Wheel-Romance

also, feel free to use the internet to research color wheel and see what you come up with..

Very good job on your first marine! So what else can we be expecting in your army? Perhaps you could add bits and bites to make them look as if they are fighting in the Badab War? So add helmets of dead Astral Claws to the bases and such!

I remember that during the Badab War (ancient fluff) the Chapters involved also had variations on their existing scheme such as camo. Perhaps you could create a Scout Squad in desert colours or something?

Post by: grey_death

Hey all! Thanks a Ton for the comments.

Some replies:

Malika, I'm sort of just putting together whatever spare kit I have laying about for these guys. I'm trying to put together something I can play (see: game legal) but with a few extra things here and there like a Desert Support Squad which was their special unit from the Warhammer World Campaign Rules. That Desert Support Squad will be done up in the Desert Camo for sure though ^_-. The local shop owner has the 40k Compendium from RT at the store for easy reference material too!

T_H_T, I never really worry much about the color wheel when I'm painting. Much of the time I'm going by feel more than I am from a technical standpoint. It was never the 'pop' that was giving me problems, just that they seemed far too flat ^_^. However I have given the eyes more consideration and I'm most likely going to do my normal marine eyes with more a fade to yellow instead of orange.

Shaman, Thanks for the compliment, I really hope to get the insignia situation worked out in the near future. But until then, I've got plenty of work to do ^_-.

Proximity, I am indeed using the foam sponge. It's working like a charm!

Belphegor, I'll probably go with a red base to yellow/white, but thanks for the suggestion!

Iffy, I've never been huge on gloss, in fact, I've never even used them x.x...I am sure some day I'll make the leap of faith and have a go though.

SoG, I sort of enjoy the asymmetry of the colors. The only real reason I did that though is because the squad marking is molded to the rim of the shoulder pad!

Red is not a complimentary colour to green, thus its place on the direct opposite side of the colour wheel.

Many GW figures use this to great effect when wanting to offset a colour, as it naturally jars the senses.

However, I'm assuming Grey is aiming to stick to a limited pallete, as the best painters do. Therefore yellow works well with green, being a by-product of two of the three primary colours.

That makes it a complementary colour.

@grey_death: Looking at it again, the asymmetry looks alright. The bolter kind of balances out the black on the armour.

I know, I know! It's been FAR too long since I've updated with ANY progress for this project! But for good reason. I quickly realized painting this color of green by hand was going to burst the little bubble that I call sanity in a matter of a few models if I didn't find a better method! So I decided it was time to find a proper spray! And boy did I ever hit the gold mine!!

PS-8 Light Green Spray from Tamiya works WONDERFULLY as a basecoat for the Sons of Medusa!

Here are my results after applying it over a white primer and giving it a wash of Thraka Green:

Yeah, Valhallan is correct. It does seem perfect for Salamanders since theyre are fairly dark shade of green anyways. How much work do you reckon it will be to get it back "up" to the light green on your initial marine?

Like I said, atm, it looks more like a Salamander, though I think its a good start.

This isn't the initial color out of the can though, it's washed heavily with Thraka Green. I don't see it being all that much harder than my original wash clean up from before ^_^.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I certainly do admire grey_death's painting skills and I'm looking to emulate the overall look you've achieved with the Tamiya Light Green spray and Thraka Green wash.

Do you think the Tamiya Yellow and then a Gryphonne Sepia wash would do the trick?

Post by: grey_death

Heya all, thanks for the comments, and Alph, don't worry about asking questions!

I think that could work out nicely honestly. The sepia wash isn't too heavy either so it will give you the depth color while still being easy to clean up ^_^. You just need to make sure you pick up the flat spray, it'll still seem like it's got a bit of a sheen to it, but a quick hit of matt varnish at the end should dull it down nicely!

How heavy a wash did you apply to get the look of the model above?

Almost "dip" level thick, or a bit more selectively applied?

Well after a day or so of work, I've saved myself 50 bucks ^_-.

A long while back, a friend of mine handed over his entire army, tanks and all. I never did much with them, but yesterday I decided it was high time I did! So I started salvage work! It took a while to get everything to working order and in the configuration that I wanted it all, but it's good to go now!

The 'big' project for this was an automated multimelta turret which is built from an attack bike metal bit and a HK launcher bit. All in all I'm VERY happy with how it came out. Expect an updated 'Green' for this one ^_-.

Since Chrysaor is the name of the Son of Medusa, this thread definetly caught my eye.

Very nice painting you've got going on here. Too bad so many people want to do a Sons of Medusa SM army, or this thread might've inspired me to.

Perhaps you could make a character (chapter master or some such thing) with the name Chrysaor.

EDIT: For idiocy.

Impressive green...

One quick question:do you find it easy to get in all the nooks and crannies on a model with the Tamiya spray? The GW one never seems to get everywhere, which makes me pretty relucant to use spray can for basecoating; if I have to touch up anyway I'd rather do it by hand, mos of the time.

The multimelta turret is pretty impressive; are the lascannons magnetized so you can swith to a LR Crusader? Or do you have something else in mind with the turret?

love the converted multi melta.

how did you do it?

The Sons of Medusa - A Badab War Log (Finished Servitor pg20) @ 2009/01/18 18:00:22

Post by: grey_death

Some quick replies:

Chrysaor, You never know what named characters will end up in the army ^_-...

CommissarKhaine, For nooks and crannies I really don't worry too much. I end up washing them with Thraka green to add the shading I need, so getting into every little spot on the model is honestly unnecessary. The turret is for the Land Raider, it's just one of the hatches. The lascannons aren't magnetized, I don't have any other weapons for this bad boy anyways ^_-....

jamunition, the multi melta was just a chop and glue job. I used an attack bike multi melta and cut the mount at the pivot point and filed everything down to fit. It takes some doing to get it all fitting correctly and is honestly a bit of a pain to get right. Once it was attached to the mount again, I used the targeter from the hunter killer missle and glued that to the side after filing down some rivets. If you can get your hands on some plastic bits that are similar, I'd suggest using those instead as the entire process will be faster and a bit easier. There is just something about converting metal minis that I really enjoy ^_^.

Sirath - for these guys I used This Technique.

Kormas - I really think the washes are a very good addition to any paint set. Some newer painters tend to overuse them as the end all be all in 'how to paint' and I've even seen a lot of folks here giving advice that pretty much ends up being 'WASH EVARYTHANG WITH BAdAB BLAK!1', while not entirely wrong, isn't exactly the method I subscribe to ^_-. Selective use is the key to the new washes, use them as an additional layer to build upon. As for how long I've been at this, just about a Decade now ^_^...God I'm old.

Minor Update:

CommissarKhaine, For nooks and crannies I really don't worry too much. I end up washing them with Thraka green to add the shading I need, so getting into every little spot on the model is honestly unnecessary. The turret is for the Land Raider, it's just one of the hatches. The lascannons aren't magnetized, I don't have any other weapons for this bad boy anyways ^_-....

Thanks. Guess I'm too obsessed with al the little bits sometimes... Didn't know a normal land raider could have a multimelta.

he green is... vibrant... Looking forward to seeing it finished!

Paul, I am indeed doing the camo scheme ^_^. This will be the only full unit camo'd out, but I'm thinking a few marines here and there might get the treatment as well, we'll see though, it takes much longer than the normal scheme x.x..

Arran, I don't do much BFG as I've just gotten into the game. That is my only ship so far. Hopefully I can flesh that out in the future.

little, thanks for the praise, I try and keep my projects interesting and varied as much as possible!

More progress:

One more stage of highlight I think and maybe a little bit of orange/brown wash for some color variation. Then camo stripping goes on.

Paul, The stripes are running roughly vertical. I wanted to update the camo look as I didn't want to just straight copy from the book a VERY dated color scheme. This new striping gives them a modern look while still keeping the same feel and colors from the original camo idea. The new camo is also FAR more aggressive looking ^_-.

Final photos of this marine incoming today sometime. Stay tuned.

My first Desert Support Marine is finished!

All except chapter marking of course, but that's not happening until the very end I suspect.

This was a very nice break from the green, and I'm very happy with the final product. It does take a while to get the colors where I want them, but the effort is worth it. Plus, I only NEED to do 5 of these guys. I suspect a few more than that will end up in this scheme now though >.>....

And a quick comparison shot:

You can see the tie ins very easily. The weapon colors are identical, and the black shoulder pad rim and chest eagles. Basing is the same as well. A more subtle tie in is the battle damage. They are both done with the exact same colors, Catachan Green for the initial damage marking and bleached bone to highlight.

Hope to do more SoMs this fast in the future.

The Sons of Medusa - A Badab War Log (Finished Servitor pg20) @ 2009/03/11 04:01:40

Post by: grey_death

Some modeling and such done tonight.

Behold my exploded magnetized Rhino/Razorback/Predator:

Three new additions for the SoMs as well.

The middle guy is the result of having kit bashed Dev Marines and Sternguard together for my Desert Support Squad. The additional guys might come in handy in the future.

The Techmarine will be run as a Master of the Forge and will be running with my Dreads keeping them in tip top condition, not to mention joining in on the slaughter should the enemy get close enough.

And here you can see my newly added static grass. I really think the bases look much much better with this little addition. If I had the time I'd even think about sculpting a few little cactus plants and casting them up! But this project is already WAY behind where I'd like it to be. So sacrifices must be made x.x...

Nothing major here, but I don't want folks to think I've forgotten about the SoMs! I'm hoping to get a 1k game in with them soon, and once my chaplain is finished getting a few more of them painted up. Or at least get further along with basecoats.

More as I finish more!

No, not all deserts are entirely full of sand. See the deserts in the North-American Southwest for example. Lots of rocks, scrub brush, sparse vegetation, etc - even some trees.

I think the grass added a really nice touch. I apologize if this has been covered before by you, but will you be keeping the rims of the bases black?

Shadow Nugz, The Desert Marines are done in a yellow ochre color. For more on colors check out the corresponding gallery, some of the photos have some more information about what colors were used. As to how I paint my white, I've done a small write up for my site here that might help you some.

- Human, Thanks for the comments, it's not super easy, but some of the steps I have in place make it a bit less difficult. And I'm extremely impressed with the camera on my phone. It definitely works wonderfully for when I'm at work without a camera!

Sirath, I'll be using both color schemes actually. The desert scheme is mainly for my Sternguard as a throwback to the old Rogue Trader camo schemes in the Badab Wars history. It won't be the main colors, but it'll be prominently displayed by any recon elements.

It does have a slight sheen to it I will admit. But the wash takes the edge off it a bit and makes it easier to paint over. Just wash the entire model and you'll get easier coverage.

There are a few different sites with DIY transfers all worked out for the Sons, you just need to print them out on the special transfer paper.

Great tutorial by the way. I just tried this a couple days ago on a terminator from the AoBR set. Really helped make the model a bit more interesting. I did have to pick at my foam a bit to get a more random appearance in the paint, but otherwise no problems.

The sergeant in front being the main feature of this group. I modeled a bionic arm from plastic tubing and guitar string. I also added a grenade pin to his teeth and a small nub where the pin should have been ^_-. This guy has a lot of energy in the pose, and I can't wait to get him painted up!

Also worked on some greencoating at work yesterday but didn't get nearly as far as I would have liked (only three marines scorpion greened...). Will continue with paint as I find some more time this week!

Perseus is ready for Paint:

As to everything else:

I've been working on another set of 5 marines as well as getting base coats on everyone else. They're coming along, but somewhat slower than the first group of marines because I'm trying to get more done at once this time. Perseus was a major project that needed to be finished and now that he's built I can be more focused on painting.

Also still need to get my hands on another Razorback for my Tacticals. Should be getting one in the next two weeks to round out the army list to 1500. After that if I choose to go to 2k I'll end up purchasing another Land Raider.

I need to work out some shoulders for my Terminators as well. I picked up a set of termies for next to nothing in trades a while back and they were without shoulders. So hopefully I can work that out soon as well.

As always, stay tuned for painting progress and comments always welcome!

1 Dread
5 Terminators
8 Tactical Marines
1 Razorback
1 Landraider

1 Razorback

Much of that is basecoated and ready to see some paint. The squad needing the most work is the terminators. They need shoulders still before I can complete assembling them. I'll be doing 5 termies with magnetized weapons and 5 glued on. This will give me the choice of taking 5 normal or assault termies. While still keeping my core force set up glued together.

Razorback should be purchased this weekend!

Stay tuned for more!

Am I correct in being able to read "The Sons of Medusa..." on that scroll? Because that's spiffy.

And you already know that I think Perseus should be next on the docket.

These guys are looking really good, g_d. Keep up the progress, and don't get bogged down doing one type of model if you feel your interest wane.

I love the green and the overall feel. You've really done the SOM proud.

I'm not so keen on the way you do the black here. It's just too crude an effect in relation to the beautiful naturality that you use to build up the green. I'd go over the black with baback wash a few times to rein in the grey edging.

They are about as nice as it gets from that sad excuse of a marine kit

Migs, Thanks a ton for the feedback. I know it's a bit of a cop out on the black, it is rather hard of a highlight where the green has a much more gradual progression. I'm not 100% on going back now to change it, but it's on the list of things to think about.

I also hate you for making me not like the basic marine. I used to think it was such a cool kit. Then you make one of the most convincing conversions of true scaling around and I can't help but want to do the same!

+++++++++++++++

Some Perseus progress:

Just some basic color mapping right now. Much of the brown on the sarcophagus will be gold.

I also was able to get the last 8 tacticals washed with Thraka in prep to finish them off after perseus. I might even work on them intermittently while Perseus has wash drying on him!

Stay Tuned.

It's not THAT bad. True, it doesn't approach what you do with your conversions, but it's a far cry from the first iteration of plug and play marines.

Judging for the contest I entered my Terminator Chaplain in has finally finished up and I have walked away the victor! And with that win I was able to procure a nice chunk of hobby stuff! This in addition to my fresh new Razorback I picked up last night!

I hope to start more scratchbuilding and sculpting in future projects!

But back on task:

I've done some more work on Perseus. He's taking a lot longer to paint than I had expected him to x.x...but much of that I believe is simply trying to figure out what colors will be going where!

Here is where I am right now:

As you can see much of it is simply base colors. But I have gotten a little further along on the sarcophagus:

Hopefully I can start to make real progress soon as more of the detail colors are worked out. I'm pretty open to suggestions still at this point so if you have em, let me know!

Persi is looking great GD, the white helmet nestled in there is really jumping already. Fantastic autocannon too, I was actually sure it was FW

The dread's little buddies are really solid too, even if wee stumpy marines compared to the true-scaler super-soldiers around these parts

Nice choice with the dread -- sons of medusa really need the FW style dread so you can paint a white helmet.

I think a small back banner would be a sweet addition to this guy. details like that really sell an army to a judge or passer by.

Boss, Thanks for the compliments ^_^. Especially the one about the autocannon. It's one of my more ambitious conversions as I delve further into the converting and sculpting world ^_-. Expect more along that front with future projects!

Wehr, Thanks! I worked for a while figuring out the best pose for him and I am glad it's paid off!

winterman, I'm pretty much 100% opposed to banners on my personal marines x.x...I dig it when others do them, but I just can't bring myself to model my guys with them! Just FAR too UN-tactical for me x.x...

Dante, I used my gryphonne sepia method for the bronzed look.

Arkion, I have been getting that a lot! People really love the SoMs and I'm glad I could breath some life into the chapter!

++++++++++++++++++++

Perseus Progress Report:

I'm a LOT happier with the green now that I've gotten the weathering on it. It wasn't working for me and now it is.

However I'm somewhat uncertain about the litany plates on the sarcophagus. I was thinking of regular parchment but couldn't help but wonder if they would be easier and look a bit better in the bronze/gold. Any thoughts?

Also might need to tone down the autocannon metal some with a light badab wash.

Expect a few damage spots on the sarcophagus plates as well. I will have to use a regular brush for those spots. The big damage spots were done with a big gnarly brush I use for terrain drybrushing ^_-... Still done in the same manner as my marines only without the sponge.

If I get some good feedback to help solidify my ideas some, I should be able to knock out the rest of the details tomorrow night sometime!

C&C welcome and wanted as always!! Stay tuned ^_-.

I think the gold/ bronze would work better as it would make the front simpler in the way of different finishes and it would at the same time calm the front which is going to be busy.

Try some brown wash on the autocannon to give it some tie in to the bronze metals.

It's looking good and colors/ scheme is working really well.

The weathering on the green really ties it back to the metals, looking very nice mate!

I love the way you have done the green, it has that "same colour as the marines but on much bigger armour" look, i.e. nice broad pale highlight type effect. One of the benefits of doing it over a white undercoat I suspect!

Cheers,

This is really looking awesome, and I have got to agree with a lot thats been said already. For example, the awesome autocannon. It looks PERFECT!

And I also agree on the banner issue. I like seeing em, but I wouldnt do it myself.
"Quickly through the pipe" CLUNK "I dont fit, my frakking banner is to big".

Yeah, no. Leave it the way it is! It will catch your eye, even without a banner.

Do you have a shot with some of the marines next to it?

Gutter, glad you're liking the results for the dread ^_^. The base is going to have the normal drybrushing and static grasses I've used on all the other models so far. I don't have any other details planned just yet, but if something jumps out at me as an much needed addition, I'll run with it!

Metsuri, I think the bronze/gold litany plates is the consensus. I'll be going with that as I move forward ^_-. The autocannon might just get a bit of the brown wash to help tone it down a bit. Hopefully as I finish more of the model, more of these little spots will start tying together more.

Dante, the green effect I've achieved is really just using bleached bone as my highlighting color. The white undercoat helped keep the green night and bright, but the real star is that wonderful muted ivory color...

Flachzange, Thanks for the compliment, I hope to continue with great subtle conversion work like this in future projects ^_^. I haven't taken any photos yet with marines, but when he's finished, I'll definitely have family photo time with the little brothers.

Alpharius, It's my same simple recipe from my Grey Death Marines. I'd love to have a Ravenguard army myself... The scratches, like the one on the dreads helmet are done with a soft(er) lead pencil! I'll be doing a little write up on that in the near future ^_-...

Migs, It's going to be a happy happy happy day when I get these guys to a playable painted state!

ChaoticFlanagan, I used extremely thin layering to get that effect. The paint is watered down and most of it is soaked off the brush so that only a thin glazed layer is left on the model each pass with the brush. As I add layers, I use normal layering technique (letting the last layers show around the edge more) to get a more gradual color.

Flachzange, I had someone else voice concern about that as well. I think it was the lighting and that many of the photos weren't on a white background. I think these are more true to life than all the rest were.

Deff Dread red Edition, Thanks!

Shas'El Tael, Thanks for stopping in! I think metals on the dread are some of the most varied I've done.

Mohaniker, Thanks! I really enjoy putting the models together for inspiration! Keeps me going x.x....

++++++++++++++++++++++

I hope the other Dread(s) is/are as easy on the painting as this guy was! They'll be a bit less detailed (thankfully x.x.), but that's just because the models are normal dreadnoughts and not FW craziness!

Ok! So I got bored painting normal Tacticals and decided my 'break' would be starting the Land Raider!

The green is about 60% basecoated, the blacks are at about 90% I believe. Once i get the green base color (scorpion green) down, it's on to highlighting, then weathering, then scratching and washing.

Ok, just a small bit of info:

I tried to do stenciling for the chapter badge a while back but unfortunately at scale I need it, and the many tiny details on the Sons of Medusa emblem, I just couldn't get it to work. Add all that to the curved nature off the space marine shoulder pad, and I was trudging up hill with no relief in site.

So I decided to go with custom decals instead, and settled upon a set made by Tubal over on B&C seen here.

I ordered a bit of decal paper from Papillio, picked up some Microsol from the model shop, a bit of Krylon Crystal Clear, and have finally gotten to work on making my sheet. I still need to pick up some Microset, which they should have in today at the model shop!

So far I've figured out what scale I needed to get it to by printing a bunch of test prints and canceling the print after I got about a line or two of images. I printed these on regular paper, cut out an emblem, and dry fit it to the shoulder to check the sizing. Once I figured out how large I wanted it (I went with 25% scale in the end), I set the printer for super glossy premium paper/best quality and printed off a sheet.

After it was done printing, I let it dry a few minutes, and set to spraying the sheet with the Crystal Clear to set the decals. Now, I wait...impatiently...for a whole day...

The fruits of my labor though are satisfying so far

I had expected a bit more of an opaque grey >.>...BUT, after thinking it over, this ends up working out for the best! The transparency ends up letting the battle damage/weathering show through and gives me a GREAT outline to paint the chapter badge over!

I love your weathering and I am always trying to improve mine be decoding other peoples, Is that black or silver? and how do you go about adding your greys highlights, do you just paint it all on the lower side of the scratches on every one you can with a fine tip? Also I like that process of decals I wish I could get that to work with Blood angels logos on their shoulder pads. They so barely work as decals and then free hand always is slightly off.

A lot of little stuff. Metals are nearly finished. The black is highlighted much the same as my normal marines, but will be dusted a good amount in the final phase of weathering. A bit of the detailing is done, but with lots of little details (lenses mostly) still needing attention. Turrets need attention still as well, but they're a minor concern compared to finishing the hull.

You always can't wait to be finished whatever you're working on.

It's looking good thus far. Looking forward to seeing the black toned down/weathered, so that it matches the rest of the battle bruised hull.

That LR is looking sweet.

Hey GD I have a question for you. Do you remember how you did the exhaust / smoke-stacks of your dread ?

I'm trying to do mine now and I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm thinking of starting with Tinbitz and then a bunch of washes with black, sepia and flesh. Maybe some washes with some regular flat brown colours too?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

This is getting better with each entry ....
Your LR really looks ace and Im a huge fan of the grime! YOu also made a good choice on the parts that will remain black. Breaks the whole thing up nicely.

StubbyGB, The stacks were done by painting them in Boltgun Metal and giving them successive washes of Gryphonne Sepia. Once they were the color I wanted, I used my Tamiya Weathering Master compact and hit them with the soot. The Tamiya stuff should be your last step as it wipes off easily, so save it for last and seal it right after.

Followed this thread for a while Grey. Very nice work. I was a little sceptical about the neon shade of green, but every model has carried it off excellently so far. No chance of the enemy missing these guys on the battlefield; in this case that is a good thing.

I really like your weathering and you have inspired me to try to emulate some of the effects you pulled off. I have done a few tests with some light colored models, to practice your sponge-based weathering to good effect.

However, what advice do you have for weathering Black Legion tanks, or more specifically vehicles painted Chaos Black? I am going to try out sponging on Boltgun Metal and "highlighting" that with maybe Adeptus Battlegrey to give the effect that maybe there was a layer of primer under the black.

Any thoughts?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I see from your blog that you responded in the comments, regarding Sponging Battle Damage:

I would personally stay away from using metallics for the scratches, at least the small ones, as the scale seems to be lost when you use them. I'd instead go for a darker color like I have here, or go for a orange/brown to indicate some rusting effects.

So after reading that, it looks like you would suggest not using the Boltgun metal, but maybe I could use the orange/brown mix? The primary dilemma is how it fits with the black paint of the vehicle itself. I will at least try this tonight.

Any other suggestions are welcome..

AbsoluteBlue, I really think it's up to personal aesthetic when it comes to weathering. GW seems to go exclusively with metallic weathering on their black armor. With the land raider I've run into a dilemma with just how to weather the black as well. I went with brown and it seems to have worked out for me. I also heavily dusted it as well.

A follow up to my reply to stubby is on weathering using the Tamiya Weathering Master compact. Check out my 'review' here.

IT IS DONE!

Awesome GD.
I didnt realize you were using the Tamiya weathering kit. I have two of those on my shelf as well and will hopefully be using those for a project soon. Im really interested how it will turn out (even though it doesnt have anything to do with warhams).

Its good so see awesome results like this though.

Great Land Raider Grey Death, I didn't realise you were using the Tamiya weathering set.

I have numerous Tamiya weathering compacts with different shades, as well as one of the Tamiya weathering stick pens.

To be honest I tend not to use the Tamiya weathering stuff so much these days. I have found that Mig pigments give a far wider range of use, from dust, through to rain marks, and heavy mud etc.

They defiantely are useful kits though, I'd say the Tamiya weathering sets offer a great entry level product for people who are starting out in weathering techniques and who are put off by the thought of having to use thinners, turpentine, or acrylic resin.

I still use my Tamiya weathering sets, I actually really like the various metallic effects one I have at home.

I also really like what you've done on the Dreadnought, brilliant work.

Big thanks to you all for your comments ^_^. They really help keep me focused and going on this project!

The Tamiya weathering stuff is indeed a great starter, and I'm already chomping at the bit to jump into a new project I can go absolutely crazy with Mig Productions stuff as well as color modulation and the like. I'm thinking IG...Stay tuned for something more on that in the future (somewhat distant right now though!).

Virus, The lines are simply gryphonne sepia wash watered down slightly and applied to effect.

+++++++++++++++

For a change of pace I decided I needed to work with something non-green.

Feels sort of busy, but the models ARE busy, being veterans and all. GW really likes to pack on the detailing for vets...I might still go back and simplify things a bit, we'll see.

C&C welcome and wanted as always!

Thanks for all of the comments folks.

I just feel the need to clarify that the Camo guys are done to honor the original Badab War section of the Rogue Trader book. I've done a slight update on the style of stripes (the eighties weren't kind...) and matched the yellow the best I could with Vallejo model color ^_^.

I've dug down deep to find a bit more motiviation and started another Desert Support Marine:

It's always a joy to tread this log, the Sons of Medusa are looking fine even with (and probably because of) the obscenely bright green you are using.

The camo marines are looking great too, the stripes are subtle enough to make the model not too busy and the muted yellow you've got going there is awesome.

Thanks for the comments!

UC, the reds are done with mechrite red over a bestial brown base color, washed badab black, brought back up to mechrite red leaving some wash in the recesses, highlight with blood red and finally an even lighter highlight (mostly to the edges) of fiery orange.

petelee, Termies are on the chopping block for paint in this first phase of the army (1500 points) with another unit and land raider in mind for phase 2 (2000 points).

lex, I'm really glad people are digging on the camo, I really like that scheme and it's actually a lot of fun to paint, and rather easy too (go go well covering paints ^_-).

Cosmic, they are pretty ridiculous green, but luckily the addition of the weathering really helps to break it up and ground them a bit. Some of the photos make them out a bit greener then they are (lighting/photo editing), but it's pretty close ^_-...

Dante, I'm glad to be back at them! Hope to ride this momentum a bit and see how far it takes me. Not having much else to do in my time off helps to guide me to paint too...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

A bit of progress after some painting at the shop and now at work:

Good work.

But one question:

Why are all your tanks painted in the Medusa-sheme - Maybe you should add a Landspeeder painted in the desert-sheme, for balancing your army...
Otherwise, the desert-marines will be sad, because they have no own vehicle...^^

Hey guys, thanks for the comments!

Nurglitch, The autocannon arm is just the IG Autocannons cut down and placed appropriately. The cabling etc removed and a bit of plasticard to help fill some gaps. I don't know that the missle launcher would look the same, but I do think you can easily convert it to house them.

I think you've got the camo in proportion with the tank, too. It's rare to see a SM vehicle with camo. Sometimes you do, but it just never fits in with the rest of the army. This guy, however, obviously does (...Although he's got a little way to go yet, but it's still all there).

The Battle worn Marines look amazing!

I love the chipping and battle damage.

Your master of the forge is also very impressive, nice metal work on the Servo Harness!

Thanks for all of the comments guys ^_^. I'm really happy with my showing in the Badab War book. I wish I could have had more completed for other photos, but I'll take what I have in there right now and be happy!

+++++++++++++

I know it's been a while x.x, but I finally had time to finish off my Razorback. It took a while longer than expected, but that was completely thanks to school and work. Now that I'm done with both for a while, I'll have a bit of time to put into the marines!

I hope to continue working on the boys this week with a bit more dedication in prep for BolsCon. If you guys are going to be there, I'll be doing some free play. I much prefer it to the tourny scene ^_-.

Good thing you had your figs put in the book GD. Made it that much more enjoyable to see great examples of color schemes and such.

Nice job on the desert scheme Rhino as well.

Thanks for all of the support guys! Really a good feeling to get this sort of response from a project I've been working so hard on for so long!

+++++++++++++++

I've finally finished the last few tactical marines for the army! And with that I decided it time to take another army photo:

This is just of what's finished so far. It was taken on my cell phone so the quality isn't the greatest, but it gets the point across, IT'S ALMOST DONE.

Oh and a little close up of a few new guys:

Last two desert marines are next and I move on to the Termies!

Very effective looking when they are all together, that desert camo is great, and that green......wow.

Can't wait to see the termies done, are they going to be assault or tactical?
