Thanks Gits.
I had no time to paint these days, I plan to paint Machete's skin this evening. And I'd like to draw some tatoos on his arms.
Problem is that I have never painted tatoos. So if anyone has tips on how to paint them, like what colors to use to get that typical dark blue tatoos are generaly made off, it would be really helpful. ^_^
(I already asked about that earlier, but maybe a new reader has the answer ! )

No prob Gits.
I have to learn how to paint them. I'll probably sacrifice some WHFB orcs for this purpose. ^^
Except the tattoos, then, Machete is totally painted. He and McClane have joined their friends :
Hope you'll like them !
EDIT : I added the picture to my Dakka Gallery.

Wow, those survivors look totally awesome! My favourites are the second and third ones from the right; you are an amazing painter. But hey, no females in the group? Also, I think the skin of #3 from the left could do with some more depth....
other than that - AH - MAY - ZING!

Thankies.
They are my favorite ones to. It's quite funny because I really disliked Josh (the man with the Slayer hoodie) as long as it was unpainted, and he is now one of my favorites.
I quite like Machete too, I had no idea how to paint the skin of a latino, not ending with a yellow guy. I'm pretty happy with the way he turned out.
There are two girls in the group. And believe me, they are badass. Amy is a goth girl with katana, the other one, Wanda, on the contrary is really girly (I'll paint her pink ^^ ) and she packs a chainsaw...
And they are good characters "in game", their abilities are very helpful.
MrMerlin wrote:Also, I think the skin of #3 from the left could do with some more depth....
Sadly, his skin doesn't look as good on my photos as on the miniature.
I don't know why, because I used the same colors on him as on Rick (the cop).
I'm happy to read that !

For the moment, I really have no idea how to do it. I'll have to use some "crash-test" model, before trying this on Machete.

Your painting looks almost photo-realistic, beautiful stuff! It's wonderful to see what these models have the potential to be in the right hands - I think Phil is probably my favourite of the characters that you've tackled so far.
Really minor detail compared to most of your stuff, but something I feel like I might actually be capable of emulating ( ) - is it cheeky to ask how you weathered those newspapers on the bases? And how you made them look so real?

Yep, people said the same on a french forum. I won't paint her eyes 'cause they are tiny. I mean really tiny, as they are half-closed. But I have added shades so they are better defined, it looks better now.
lone dirty dog wrote:Thats one waitress you don't want to upset, love you're painting skill great work, really bring miniatures to life, those zombies are great and that blood is the most realistic I have seen

Thank you !
When painting blood, the trick is to use the transparency to get darker areas where the blood is thicker, and to ensure you have a shiny result. I use a mix of old GW inks and gloss varnish, it works well as you can see.
Scarper wrote:Your painting looks almost photo-realistic, beautiful stuff! It's wonderful to see what these models have the potential to be in the right hands - I think Phil is probably my favourite of the characters that you've tackled so far.
Phil is my favorite model too. I'm really happy with the way he turned out. And that's a good point since he's one of my favorite characters "in game" too.
Painting the skin and the clothes was really the funniest part of the process. Most of the models I paint are either space marines or orks, so I don't have so many occasions to paint blue-jeans, cops uniforms or frying pans. ^^ I've learned a lot with these models.
Scarper wrote:Really minor detail compared to most of your stuff, but something I feel like I might actually be capable of emulating ( ) - is it cheeky to ask how you weathered those newspapers on the bases? And how you made them look so real?
No problem, of course can you ask. ^^
So first, I have downloaded newspapers from da internet. You can use images of real newspapers and resize them. As I am lazy, and friends did it for me, I simply downloaded them "ready to print" from these sites :
- Belisarius : http://jeuxdefigs.canalblog.com/archives/p10-10.html
- Poule75 : http://petitsbonhommes.fr/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Zombicide_print.pdf
- Gurutz : http://www.warhammer-forum.com/index.php?showtopic=185193&st=25
(they also paint Zombicide, have a look if you are curious)
I only have a B&W printer, so I printed the newspaper black and white. But a color print would also work. Now the real work begins :
- first apply a wash of brown ink on the sheet of paper. I personnally used old GW flesh wash ink (with lot of water), but a newer wash like devlan mud, ogryn flesh or agrax earthshade should work perfectly too. Dont forget to wash BOTH sides of the sheet.
- once it dried, cut the newspapers.
- pick one.
- drown it into water for a few seconds
- now, the paper is flabby. You can fold it, tear it and give it any shape.
- using an old brush put some PVA glue on the base and glue the newspaper
- apply PVA all over the newspaper.
- wait until it's dry
You now have a great looking old newspaper. Let me know if you have any question.
Scarper wrote:Keep it up, this is a brilliant blog!
I hope you'll keep watching it then.

No, seriously, I can't do a video tutorial since I have nothing to record myself painting, but I can make step by step pictures to show how I proceed. I'll do that next time I paint an Ultramarine.

I haven't used it myself, but there is a great tutorial on painting tattoos here:
http://www.bushido-thegame.com/articles/painting-tattoo
The main advice seems to be that when you highlight/shade, you mix the skin paint into the tattoo colour (e.g. if you highlight the skin with Elf Flesh and the tattoo's basecolour is Enchanted Blue, then the tattoo highlight would be a mix of elf flesh and enchanted blue), not the best example but you get my drift.

Spectacular!! That is a masterpiece of a fortification if I've ever seen one. I love the muted blue tones it has, especially in contrast with the winged statuary.
How did you apply the brownish weathering to the outside of the fortress (near the base)? I just can't quite decide what I'm looking at.
50760
Post by: Minus
Thanks Gits !
I'm really satisfied with the general tone of my fortress. The main color really matches what I wanted to get.
The weathering is a wash of weathering powders. I mixed Dark earth and orange rust from the Forgeworld range, and diluted them with water. I applied them like a wash, with no special care.
And when it had dried, I rubbed the areas with both wet and dry cotton swabs to remove the excess and smooth the transitions.
I had never used weathering powders before (except on one or maybe two bases) and it's quite easy and fun to do.

I've made pastes of weathering powders before, but never a wash. Very interesting.... end result is excellent too. Nicely done.
50760
Post by: Minus
Thank you SilverMk2 ! @ Gits : I used the "wash" method because I wanted the pigment to remain mainly in the recesses. I thought it would be the most appropriate way to achieve this result. But I had never used powders for washes, nor for such big surfaces. After it dries, I had to smooth the transitions though, because on several spots I had a clear border with no transition. ^^ You should have a try. As you probably know, pigments are removable as long as you dont fix them. So if it doesn't look good you can erase and redo it all ( Ctrl-Z )

I hope we'll see your trials in one of your topics soon, then.

Thank you. It was a full time job, postponning any other painting project for a few weeks. But playing full painted games was definitely worth it.
I now have a brand new fortress, and also a bunker that I painted this summer. Some of my sceneries look old and dull beside these, so I have decided to upgrade some of them.

I know what you're talkin' about. ^^
My Ultramarines army is pretty big now (maybe I should take pictures of the entire army). I've painted tons of blue, and sometimes I feel like everything's blue. So I paint something else like my orkses or anything that is NOT Ultramarines blue. ^^
But I love that color, and sooner or later I want to paint some more.
Awesomesauce wrote:Whenever I see your thread I want to bust out and start painting some of my old ultramarines again. Everything looks excellent, as always.
You should paint them ! No. You MUST paint them. I love Ultramarines. Paint Ultramarines.
Awesomesauce wrote:And that Fortress of Redemption is ridiculous. I would HATE to paint something that enormous! At least to the level of detail that you did.
In fact, I enjoyed painting it, because it doesn't require too much care. It changed from the Zombicide heroes.
The main problem with such a huge "miniature" is that it is sometimes hard to turn it the good way to access details, without accidently hitting your desk, an open paint-pot, your nose or anything you wouldn't hit with a miniature. Yes, painting the lights on top of the tower was the worst part.

That fortress looks amazing. I like the weathering at the base, not over done but enough to show it's seen some use and has been there awhile.
The marines look great, not over done, which is usually what I see happen to most UM armies. By this there is not an overabundance of gold trimming everywhere. I like that.
And the zombie models are ace! Is there a points limit that goes with the game?

Thanks. Weathering is rather easy to do. What is not is to decide when to stop, to not "over-do". I'm happy if I succeeded in making my fortress used but didn't make it look too-much. combat engineer wrote:The marines look great, not over done, which is usually what I see happen to most UM armies. That's the reason why i avoided the Second company. I went for Fifth (black shoulder pads borders) because I like the color scheme and it was not a company we see much for Ultramarines. I'm not sure if I understand the question. But there is not "points" in Zombicide, no lists, and in fact no winner. All the players around the table are survivors and stand together in a world infested by zombies. Those zombies being played by the game, against the players. There are no zombies (or only a few ones) on the board at the beginning of the game, and they appear each turn on spawn zones, and when a survivor breaks into a building. Generally comes a moment when the map is litterally covered by zombies. And when there are no more zombies in the box, don't believe you're safe. Each time a kind of zombie is generated and no more available, the zombies on the board get an extra activation. All the players win or lose together, in our case we generally lose I have to admit. ^^ I really like that game.

After my old sceneries, I decided to finally take some time to FINISH two of my Ultramarines units that were partially done for years. I had never painted markings on them since I didn't have the skills do do so at the moment I painted these units.

Nope. I don't play tyrannids so I never painted any of them. Maybe one day, if I ever have a reason to paint one I'll do.
The only tyrannid things I ever painted are bitz on some of my bases, like on my Tornado Land Speeder :
Gitsplitta wrote:Nice scuplts!
Is this how you spell "boobs" ?
It's quite disturbing to paint 6 totally nude female models in fact... I usually paint Marines ( über-trained-killer-monks-in-adamantium-panties) and orks ( agressive-mushrooms-from-space), this has nothing in common with the curves of female bodies.

I would really like to see an army shot of your Ultras and any other armies you have. Don't hold out on us, man! We need our fix!
I somehow haven't seen those Harpies before, probably because I don't play WHFB. They are pretty good models, they remind me of Dracula's Brides in Van Helsing, in their vampiric form obviously. Still feminine but repulsive creatures all the same, I could see them in a Slaanesh daemon army.

nold wrote:Do you dip the marines? Do you use ultramarine blue as the base or a darker shade? LOVE how crisp they look!
I don't dip the marines. Hey, I don't dip everything. ^^
I only dip my orks - except vehicles that are painted as usual - and I also dipped all of my Zombicide zombies. That's it. Marines, Dark Elves, BFG, Mordheim and devious models are NOT dipped.
For my Ultramarines, I'll do a tutorial someday, but I can tell you the colors I use now. The main color is Ultramarines blue indeed. In GW books they are generally darker but I love the specific shade of this blue. I use old references, though it shouldn't be too complicated to find equivalences in the new range.
- I start with a black primer
- Necron abyss
- Mordian blue
- Ultramarines blue
- 50/50 mix of Ultramarines blue and white for intensive highlights on edges and so on.
For the vehicles, I also add Ultramarines blue + snakebite leather and then Ultramarines blue + scorched brown on the lower side of armour plates. It gives more depth to the blue as it creates a shading and also a weathering at the same time.

Well...
Maybe I'm a Geek...

Good. That's always the balance I try to reach.
Casey's Law wrote:The Fortress turned out amazing, you struck a perfect balance for me between ornate and functional. Could you please tell me how you painted the stone on the statues? It's wonderful.
And it's so simple...
All I did on the angels was drybrushing. I used three colors, a neutral brown, a beige and a white. Started with brown, then added beige to this. Then beige, beige plus white and then white.
I didn't use GW paints, given the size of the fortress, but the colors I used are very similar to the both on the right of this image (neutral brown bottom right, beige top right) :
Casey's Law wrote:I would really like to see an army shot of your Ultras and any other armies you have. Don't hold out on us, man! We need our fix!
Oh yes... I have to do this.
All I need is to find time to unpack the whole army, place it, make correct shots and store everything back. I'll do this as soon as I can at least for the marines. Can't let you without your drug dose !
Casey's Law wrote:I somehow haven't seen those Harpies before, probably because I don't play WHFB. They are pretty good models, they remind me of Dracula's Brides in Van Helsing, in their vampiric form obviously. Still feminine but repulsive creatures all the same, I could see them in a Slaanesh daemon army.
Yeah true, they look like those vampires ! Good point !
In fact, they're not GW models, they're from Gamezone because GW's harpies are... well... add any negative adjective here : _____________
I painted a bit more of them yesterday, and I think they start to look good now. ^^

That's great, man. I'll need to try that stone on something now, thanks for posting that chart too, it'll make it easier to match.
Looking forward to seeing those marines all set up, there's something brilliant about seeing a full army painted up to a high standard.
I haven't checked out Gamezone I don't think, I'll have to look them up because I'm rather impressed by those harpies.

Well, your dipped orks look FANTASTIC. I paint my marines in a similar fasion. I airbrush a black primer, Mordian blue basecoat, then shoot ultra blue fron the top and front. Still learning with the aiebrush though!

@ Nold : You're lucky if you've an airbrush ! ^^ When painting marines, I think that the intensive highlight on edges really makes it all. @ Casey'law : You're welcome. And I've made a photo for you during my lunchbreak. Just for you. The picture is not so good, I hope I can make a better photo later. This is my Ultramarines army so far : (and the direct link if your browser resizes the photo : http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/1/10/451029-Ultramarines%2C%20Ultramarines%20Army.jpg ) I have around 6,000 points of blue armours painted. That's 94 marines (not including additionnal marines for weapons options) plus 18 vehicles.

Whoa, love it. Couple of quick questions:
The tactical squad in the middle with the back left rhino. Where are the sergeant's arms from? I recognise the pose and the sword but I'm not sure where from.
Also, I know you freehand many of your symbols. How many of those are transfers or did you paint them all by hand?
Keep it comin'!

Casey's Law wrote:The tactical squad in the middle with the back left rhino. Where are the sergeant's arms from? I recognise the pose and the sword but I'm not sure where from.
It's an ooooooooold conversion I made like 10 years ago.
The arms are tactical marine ones that I cut and replaced. The blade is a Space Wolves power sword. Simple and efficient.
Casey's Law wrote:Also, I know you freehand many of your symbols. How many of those are transfers or did you paint them all by hand?
Well.
On every marine the markings are freehands. I didn't use any transfers one them.
On the vehicles, the big symbols like the top doors of the rhinos are also freehands. The smaller ones are decals because it's easier to apply them on flat areas than on lets say... shoulder pads. However I repaint all the decals because white decals don't look really white, and it looks better when painted over.
I use them as a guide to paint my markings. Some of the vehicles have there name written on their hull, this is also a freehand. And the white "V" in the black circle as Compagny marker is also a freehand (well, it's a simple one) because there is no decall like this.
That's it.
Edit : see the name on some vehicles :

I was not 100% sure wich one you were talking about, since both models are quite old now. So yeah basically they are Space Crusade (or one of its additionnal sets) Dreadnoughts. I changed the weapons to have the possibility to play them in regular 40k games. The good news is that they are almost exactly the same size as current plastic dreadnoughts. Oh, just so you know, I started 40k at the beginning of the 3rd edition, so I wasn't in the hobby during the RT, Space Crusade or 40k 2nd Ed. But I love so much these old miniatures that I can't help but add them in my armies and mix them with current models. Casey's Law wrote:Aah, I figured that since you don't convert much it was a kit I didn't recognise. As for the freehand, colour me impressed, that's some serious talent!
Thanks Casey. For the freehands, to be honest I'd say that it's more about time and practice that about talent. You should have seen my first markings... I had terrific handshakes and was absolutely unable to draw my Chapter symbol . Now, with some practice I can draw my reversed Omega without screwing too much. The main difficulty for me now is that the ultramarines markings are white, and white is almost impossible to paint with only one layer, so all my markings require at least three steps. Well, I just went to the gallery and couldn't believe the notes my army photos got so far ! Yesterday evening, I had 10 votes and 10/10. This morning, I'm at 9,75/10 In a world of Ultrasmurfs hatred, that's incredible. Thanks to anybody who voted, it's really motivating to see that a long time painting project deserves the time I spent on it !

Great ! I love that game. I played games with my brother last holidays. We played like 12 games in a few days. First thing he did when coming back home was buying one for himself. This week-end he played with some of his friends, they now want their own copy too. I think that the cooperative aspect of the game is something that people appreciate. Add a good quality material and a strong visual aspect and it's a very attractive game. That, and the fact that zombies are trendy these days.... You should not be disappointed if you buy it. Casey's Law wrote:Practice makes perfect, eh? I'll keep at it and hopefully drill down the freehand stuff one day too.

I was quite lucky about this one. In fact, I have the chance to know a very talented sculptor and painter (he won golden demons, that says it all). This is one of his personal creations and he offered me a copy to paint.
This is the finest model I have ever had in my hands. It's incredible. o____O

whalemusic360 wrote:Looks like the blonde from sucker punch. Is it going to be a diorama?
Yup, the lady is directly inspired from Suckerpunch.
But this won't be a diorama, the dragon is for my WHFB army. I only had these 2 models on my desk and liked the "Beauty and the beast" theme I had there. The lady will be perfect for my Zombicide team.

Candice (it's her name) is a bit small compared to Zombicide models. However I love her so much I will play her anyway.
I know that some people added Hasslefree miniatures to their zomicide survivors team.
I have ordered some, but since I don't have the models yet I can't tell you how it fits with zombicide scale.
I just uploaded my Dark elve Lord in my dakka gallery, I don't think that I ever posted him on here. So please welcom Lord Karhaedron :

That's a beautiful sculpt and I like the obvious suckerpunch inspiration. Would this friend of yours consider selling casts of her and does he have other similar pieces? Also any idea how she scales with infinity? I'm building an all female Bakunin force and I'd love to fit her in.
Looking forward to seeing the dragon too. I like your work on the Dark Elf but I must say it's not a model I'm fond of to say the least.

He is a very good sculptor. I'm amazed by the anatomy and the details of his pieces.
Casey's Law wrote: Would this friend of yours consider selling casts of her and does he have other similar pieces?
I don't think he'll sell this model. He sculpts models for his own, in general. Original pieces that he then paints and brings to painting contests. Some examples of his - incredible - work :
Vespero, from the WHFB universe : http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/5104/vespero2.jpg
Green Lantern : http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8563/dscn1827o.jpg
(THIS ARE NOT MY MODELS !!! )
If he ever producess copies of Candice, I'll tell you.
He made a few sculpts for companies, like Viktoria Skivlana for WarForge, or Sophie Bigoude for Maow Miniatures. Viktoria is one of the models I preferred to paint, that's the reason why I'm really happy to have a chance to paint Candice.
My version of Viktoria (wich I already posted at the beginning of this topic) :
(click for larger image)
And concerning Infinity, I have to say that I have no idea about it, because I have never seen Infinity minis for real. ^^
Casey's Law wrote:Looking forward to seeing the dragon too. I like your work on the Dark Elf but I must say it's not a model I'm fond of to say the least.
I love it, that manticore is SOOOO old school.
I've only started the dragon, I don't know exactly how I'll paint it but I think it will be fun to paint such a monster.
Right now I'm painting new ships for my BFG fleet.

Gits, the battleship is normally a metal model. However I can't imagine putting such an anvil on top of those tiny fragile plastic rods. Plus I don't like how that ship looks. @ Whalemusic360 : that's a suitable question. The name of my other ships are :
- gothic class : Prometheus
- lunar class : Nostalgia for Infinity
- dominator class : Ender
- mars class : Nostromo
My escorts squadrons are named Sidewinders, Darksiders and Purgatoy.
I don't look for a specific origin or type for the names, the common point is only that they all are a reference to a book/movie/CD that I like and that fits the spaceships theme.

They are from the "Eden" range. It's a skirmish game in a post apocalyptic world.
I had an initiation game with a friend few weeks ago and we really enjoeyed it. Plus the models are great so we decided to start playing Eden.
Ruglud wrote:Wow, what a blog you have here Minus, so man great pieces. Zombies are fantastic and the BFG is eye popping - love the bases on these... My favourite at the moment though is your female commissar. Beautiful sculpt with a top notch paint job that complements it. Keep up the good work
Thank you Ruglud !
The female Comissar was sculpted by Steve Party (keep this name in mind, you could hear about him sooner or later ) and is available on eurobitz.com. He also sculpted Candice.
I have some new candies for your eyes !
I just finished painting my ratmen for Mordheim. The new warriors :

I'm currently making some trials on pices of paper to try to find appropriate colors associations. I know I want the clothes to be purple (who said "AGAIN" ? ) and make some searches for the other textures, and particularly the skin tone. I don't know if I go with normal skin tone and variations only on the mutated bodyparts, or if I use less common colors like a palid green... or maybe I'll use completely crazy colors like on my second Zombicide abomination.
If anyone has ideas, this could help !
Casey's Law wrote:P.S. Paid Steve for a couple of copies of Candice, can't wait to get a hold of them!
Nice.

Thanks Gits. I'm happy with the way the rust turned out. Quite funny since it was the easiest thing to paint on them.
I have one general question : it's not the first time this happens to me, I have people coming to my dakka gallery and giving me zero notes and this drops the average note drastically. I noticed this since I have models whose notes decrease by 2 points with a single vote... I don't post on dakka for the notes (I paint for my pleasure ^^ ), I post here to share and discuss, so I don't really care about the notes themselves (I know what my painting level is) but I'd like to know if this is something common.
Can't believe people have nothing else to do than dropping our notes...

I don't have any suggestions on the paint scheme. Just do what you do so well!
That sucks that people are doing that. There is supposed to be some sort of system to block that from happening too severely but Lego might have to give it a shunt to get it working again. Sadly the world and therefore the internet is full of hateful wastes of space. Don't let it bug you too much though, just remember how sad and pathetic their lives must be if that's what they do for kicks.
Now get some paint on those cool minis!

Is this people just flicking through the photos and not voting at all just looking, or is it people voting deliberately low?
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
It would have to be deliberately low voting with malicious intent. As I say, there is so supposed to be a block against the odd very different vote so one really low vote should get discounted but if multiple people do it it'll probably start to have an effect. Not voting has no effect on the gallery unless you hit the N/A vote which is still technically a vote. That said, voting is good for the health of the gallery, as is being thorough when you upload images.
Back on topic though...

Don't worry, I don't bother that much about those notes. As I said I paint first of all for ME. I know what my painting is worth. ^^
I have just started putting colors splashes on my first Askari warrior (for Eden). I think I love these models already. They seem to be a real pleasure to paint. I'm eagger to paint them all !
First I have to finish the first mini to validate my color scheme.
I'll post WIP pictures later.

I have started painting my first Askari warrior. I applied the baseoats to see if my main colors matched together. I have almost finished painting the skin, but other areas are only a basecoat.
And since I had the question on another forum, this is a picture of Candice and Viktoria side by side :

I think the green is a great choice for the skin. It's hard to say how the rest will come together but I'm sure you'll do a grand job.

I have already plans for the next ones I'll paint, but I can't tell for the moment. Keep watching this thread.
I have painted the purple clothes on the Askari yesterday. I wonder if it requires a wash to make it a bit smoother or not. Any advice (about the wash or about anything else) ?

Looks great to me. If you aren't happy with the purple, a wash could be good to bring the highlights down closer to the base. What are the plans for the metal?
50760
Post by: Minus
Yup. I applied a purple wash on the pants, it looks better now in my opinion.
I also painted other stuffs, such as the metal parts. I had loads of fun using all sorts of washes I could find on my desk :

The metal was the part I really wanted to improve on this one. I had a massive use of washes, on my Eden models I want to have metallics with high contrasts and deep colors.
Casey's Law wrote:He/it is really nice! Great job, Minus. What's the story behind the game?
The game takes place on Earth, during the 23rd century.
Political and environnemental events lead to a WW3 wich ends in 2137 - due to the use of viral bombs, nuclear missiles and sismic weapons - with an almost complete annihilation of the human race.
A few people survived on the planet surface, most of them are now mutants and degenerates. But there were also shelters built underneath the surface by different factions, each of them having their own interests.
For example, the Askaris - the faction I chose - were scientists and rich industrials that burried themselves in bunkers before the war started, and made researches about genetics and bio-mechanics in order to create the absolute human being, the perfect warrior. However they had to speed up their studies due to the war, so it didn't work as well as they hoped it would and the result is an underground society of mutants that are barely humans.
A few years after the apocalypse, the survivors started to leave their shelters and discovered the new face of earth : a wasted land.
The game presents the fightings between gangs of survivors between 3 and 6 members. It is played on 60 x 60 cm boards and a game takes around an hour. Each faction has a very typical aspect, visually it's a pleasure.

To be honest, the warrior is not my favorite model. He has a very static pose. I started with this one for this reason. So I could try my color scheme on the models I liked the less, and do better then on the other minis. I have started the Defender this week and I definitely prefer this model to the warrior. A WIP picture : [/URL] So far, only his mutated hand and his purple clothes are almost done. Any thougts?

Thanks Gits.
At first I painted the gem on his belt purple. It looked reaaly good by itself. But sadly it didn't pop due to the purple scarf he wears around his waist.
Then I choose this bright green, and it works pretty well with the rest of the scheme.
And the eyes are painted with scaly green and white. You can't be wrong when you add scaly green on a model.

Scaly green is an old GW color and I think Vallejo is still making their equivalent in the Game Color line.

Epy is right, it's a GW color from the previous range.
I don't use this color a lot (I mean I don't use it on large areas) but I use it really often. It's a very vibrant blue-ish green so it's perfect for gems, glowing effects and so.
I use it for the plasma engines on my BFG ships, as light source on bolters scopes and so on. The flames on my skaven sorcerer's staff is also painted with scaly green.

The two points I wanted to improve on these models were the skin since I don't have such large surfaces to paint really often, and the metallics. I'm happy if I succeeded.

It looks better IRL, to be honest. I first painted it as normal metal, bu I added this "glowing" effect in the end because the model has to pop between the others. Aïcha is the leader, but her bodyguards are huge compared to her. With this fluo green, she catches the eye more.
Oh, I've taken a better photo of the first two models for an online contest so I post it there too. I'll do the same with Aïcha later :

The sculptor is Graphigaut : http://www.graphigaut.fr/
I know he already sculpted models for Eden and for Bushido. Check his work, he improves his skills incredibly fast. The sister of battle you can see on his page is his entry for last year's Golden Demon. She's based on a Dark elve sorceress.

Casey's Law wrote:What range and era is the dragon from? It looks like a modern WHFB kit but I don't follow that system much so I'm bot sure.
It's a WHFB dragon from 6th edition. It's Seraphon, Malekith's mount.
So I think it was released around 2001. The body and wings are common for several dragons from this era, and the head, hands and tail are specific metal parts.
Eldercaveman wrote:Man that dragon is awesome! Fancy giving a tutorial on how you achieved the colours?
No problem.
I used an army painter red can as a base (pure red), but a brushed basecoat would work as well. Then :
- apply purple wash everywhere to shade ( GW leviathan purple)
- GW mephiston red (red gore would work as well) avoiding the lower part of the scales
- Army painter pure red ( GW blood red is pretty similar) on upper half
- GW blazing orange on edges
That's it. Is it clear enough ? Or should I make a step by step picture ?
The black is just 2 washes of black over the army painter red. It'snot finished yet. ^^

Niddly - in the style of Nids. Abomination then I take it, and the big one at that? You doing dirz should be awesome!

Oh I guess I know why google didn't translate that one.
"Niddly", like tyraNIDs, sounds logical. Thanks for the explanation.
So yes, it's an abomination. And yes there'll be Nemesis to. But no it won't be niddly. It's more... let's say... torturated. And now that the dragon is over I'll have the time to try my color scheme. I have an idea of what I want already, but I need to paint it to see if it works, and how I can do to get a color scheme that is fast. I need my army done for the beginning of september. (why didn't I decide to play orks on that tournament ? )
And I am REALLY pleased by the comments on my dragon so far. It took me so much time, it would be a pity if it didn't look good in the end. So thank you all for support.

I think what we can all take from this is.............. you should paint Tyranids.

Yep !
Dirz have the perfect look for Dark eldars.

Problem is : I don't have any of them.
If someone offered me a tyrannid army, I'd have no choice but painting them.
Today we had a 2Vs2 WHB game at home, and it turned out to a complete slaughter. The facing armies (dwarves + ogres) had such firepower that all my monsters were wiped out of the board in 2 turns. My dragon didn't do anything.
But we had a great time, so that's what matters the most. I'll see if I can post photos of the game later.

Whoa, that is stunningly beautiful, Minus. You are a king, sir! A DE army from you sounds exciting too, looking forward to it.

I'm preparing all the models for the painting (removing mold lines, little conversions, rebasing it all and so). I'm almost done with this so I should start painting the test models today. I need something that catches the eye AND that is pretty fast to paint. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED !
I'll most probably need your opinions to validate my color scheme before I start the mass cloning process. So keep an eye looking in there.

Interested to see what you come up with. Personally I'd like to see something colourful and eye catching like Jon's Drowned Gardens.

OMG, I didn't know Jon's army. I wanna cry now.
Ok, let's go.
When I came back home this afternoon I grabbed a handful of minis and started applying colors everywhere to see how it goes. What I want to do :
- the color for armours (and for vehicles) has to be red.
- I thought that a green skin (kinda weird-sick-mutant green, not orkish green) would work well with red
- all shiny bits (eyes, weapons and so) will be scaly green, because scaly green is magic
- the color scheme must be eye catching
- the models MUST be really fast to paint
I need a third color for clothes. I tried turquoise because it's a color I never painted before, but I'm not sure if it's a good choice. Maybe I should go for beige.
I applied battle damages on the armor plates because I'll do so on the vehicles so I think it will look good together.
As you will see, I tried several green skin colors, I dismissed most of them and picked the two ones I prefer. But I'm not sure if I should choose one of them (and wich one) or if I should try something else.
These are the first 2 test models. It's a quick paintjob, so don't judge the technical level of the painting, think "colors". Tell me what you think. I take ANY advice, positive or negative !
(also these are TEST models so don't bother for mold lines and model preparation... I painted thos models directly)

Haha, have you seen finnan's stuff too?
I think the red is lovely and the green is a great idea for skin. My honest opinion is dump the turquoise, it's too busy next to them. Beige is a great idea, a nice modern military desert khaki would be absolutely perfect next to the red and green. I prefer the green on the left but I feel like the green should be paler and more sickly, maybe even with a yellow tinge but overall just much paler would be my suggestion. The lenses will look good in green next to that I think.
Just my two pence!

I prefer the green on the left. I agree that the turquoise doesn't work. Whilst a khaki might be okay, it's then at risk of just being a dirz scheme; strong, but aged, colours I think A washed out pink might work, as well as being more deldar. Maybe yellow, rather than khaki, alternatively?

Ah, I didn't know the official scheme for that army was similar. Pink is an awesome idea.

I "finished" one test model to see what it looks like when it's complete. I'll answer your comments later, now it's time to jump to my bed and sleep.
But you're free to comment this one.

The skin is excellent. There are mold lines on the inside of the right arm and the glowing cable that are distracting me. I'm just not sure how I feel about the red armor.

I like the red armor, but the mold lines, yeah.

I know I often forget some mold lines but there's a HUGE one on the top of his head. I wouldn't have failed on this one.
I'll keep the red armours like this 'cause you seem to like them and it's really easy and fast to paint, and go with that not so green skin wich I'll try to make a bit lighter.
@ Gits : what bothers you about the red armour ? Is it TOO red ? Should I paint some areas an other color ?
@ all : since I painted the whole model and there's no more white areas, I think that the turquoise works better in the color scheme. But I'm not 100% convinced though. What d'ya think ?
I'll try other colors. I see you recommend beige and... pink. I'm affraid that beige could look flat or boring (beige and red is a common color scheme). Pink is far more original but would pink work well with red ? Do you have an exemple of what kind of pink you have in mind Inmygravenimage ?
Does anyone have an idea of what could work ? (pink, purple, blue, green, orange, anycolorthatcomestoyourmind...)
