Ben, we're working with that in the final version of the packets (which will release by tomorrow).

The notion behind it is that Flyers rarely can actually be within 3" of an objective - their hulls are all largely more than 3" off the ground. Given that is the case, we've leaned toward not counting them for Quarters either.

That's still one being decided, of course - thoughts?

Note - in the primer they don't count for scoring/denial for objectives purposes in any mission; it's always for Quarters (just either Heavy or Fast, in a couple of instances of Quarters).

There ARE VIP bags left; not very many, though, maybe 4 or 5. They now have over $300 in value inside of them (counting the $75 KR Multicase 2 Backpack itself).

The new White Dwarf Daemons are INDEED legal for the GT.

Well I think flyers should indeed count for quarters if they are heavy. I've been arguing consistently for flyer nerfs as you know , but in this case, if a land raider can score, a storm raven probably should too. I think the fact that night scythes will no longer count no matter what is enough of a nerf to necron flyer lists in that mission.

As for the speed issue, flyers do have crazy speed, but getting them in the quarter you want at the end of the game does require planning turns ahead since their movement is weird. A fast skimmer can also get to whatever quarter they want in one turn, and if they can score as a heavy choice, fliers probably should too.

But doesnt this add negatives to other armies? Such as a StormRaven for BA is a heavy choice but the exact same Storm Raven for GK is fast. Why would you then allow 1 and not the other?

I dont think that any flier regardless of how its taken should count for table quaters. The ability to flow over move 36 inches a turn gives fliers an unnatural advantage to the player that wants a quater.

Another question in that regard is what if a flier can go into hover mode? Does he then have the ability to score since skimmers can score?

Dont mind me my brain hurts!!

I say that with Big Guns Never Tire and The Scouring special rules, heavy support and fast attack fliers respectively can count for quarters, however not for objectives, simply because they CAN'T be within 3 inches.

I'm a big fan of simplicity here. Flyers should count as scoring for purposes of table quarters. It's not guaranteed that a player will be able to get the flyer to position exactly where they want, especially with random game length.

Narrative event question,

I picked up some of the NOVA narrative scenic bases, which are awesome!!, and realized that nothing in my army for the narrative event uses 40mm bases. I had picked up 10 for a squad of necron warriors, all 40mm. SO, with that being said....If I put some clear flyer stands in the bases and use them to mount annihilation barges on, is this going to be an issue with the judges if I have the original base there for modeling purposes. Otherwise I have 10 really cool bases for the narrative event that do not correctly fit on any of my models...lol...I guess the other option is to use them on necron warriors or HQ selections, but still the wrong size base...thanks....

That is a fantastic idea, the flyer base component. Also, for purposes of at least the narrative event, if you want to use some magnetization or something to mount key characters on the shattered emblem of the Oval Office or something, you are more than welcome to do so.

Quick questionas I am a little unsure of the wording. For GK inquisitors can a Malleus Inq Lord in TA have a Daemonblade?

In the wargear section it states he can replace bolt pistol and or chainsword with a daemon blade.

The TA secton says replaces armor bolt pistol and chainsword with TA and a daemon hammer.

So does this mean I can then replace the daemon hammer with a daemonblade for 15 points?

I put this oj the NOVA forums as I plan on bringing one to NOVA and want to make sure it is ok and not illegal before I go through the effort.

As I read it, you cannot.

If you trade for daemon blade first, you no longer meet the requirements of equipment to swap into terminator armor. If you buy the TA upgrade, you no longer meet the requirements to swap for a daemonblade. Think it's one or the other I'm afraid.

There is an faq entry (on the first page) which pertains to the psyker upgrade, stating you "may" upgrade one weapon to a force sword. Sort of similar situation, though wouldn't help here. Mike/NOVA crew are the final word on this, but as far as I can tell RAW says you can't.

I say do your super cool conversion (because who doesn't love seeing those?!) and just play it as it's supposed to be, letting your opponents know right off the bat. Conversely, find the points to upgrade to a psyker (extremely, extremely worth it this edition -> divination primaris power?), and that cool looking sword would be your force sword.

I think it's because something like only 1/6th of games nowadays are KP (or VP) based in the rulebook. So the change was made based on how the rulebook strutured 40k.

NOVA OPEN 2012 8/30-9/2; RESULTS ON PAGE 17 @ 2012/08/03 14:19:06

Post by: MVBrandt

It was based upon the change to 40k, per Hulksmash.

5/6 missions involve board control/objectives. So, our Final 2 rounds don't incorporate KP as a primary (those are the Final Four for each bracket). There are 6 rounds that EVERYONE plays in, and those have 1 kp primary, 1 kp secondary, and 4 kp tertiaries.

You could of course try for the tactic of drawing down to KP in every mission, anticipating people bringing MORE KP in reaction to the base rulebook minimization of that component of the game. A gamble, sure.

Basically, the rulebook has a variety of new scoring-modification situations; those are all incorporated somehow. It has KP once, and that's in there once for the 6 rounds that everyone plays. It has 2 primary objectives only once, and that's incorporated in the Emperor's Will mission.

Etc.

Updated NOVA FAQ, Trios Rules, and Narrative Packet incoming today.

For reference to all - In Trios, all Allies within Doubles games will act as Allies of Convenience or Battle Brothers. In short, Desperate Allies will operate as Allies of Convenience.

This is in part due to the nature of the event, and in part to prevent those who were signed up and prepared prior to 6ed release from having armies invalidated by non-scoring oddities (which of us exactly doesn't score?), or random badnesses.

Question on round 2 - The Relic.

The Relic is worth the other four objectives combined for the purposes of the Objective Goal, but is it also worth then 4 points when determining results at the end of game for the score sheet, which also states "Objective Goal"; i.e., normally there are 5 objectives, does the relic now make this mission worth a potential 9 when calculating standing?

Mike,

Soul Devourer for chaos daemons. "The Daemon counts as armed with a power weapon. In addition, if a model suffers any unsaved wounds from the Daemon's close combat attacks..."

So, the Daemon counts as having a normal power weapon as the additional rules are separate. Does this mean you go by what the model is armed with, effectively making the GW Lord of Change model (staff) S8?

No. The power weapon it counts as being equipped with has additional unique special rules, making it an unusual power weapon. So, AP3 (overridden by the superior AP of the MC in most cases), strikes at model's S and I.

The thing is, the power weapon itself does not have unique rules. Soul Devourer does 2 things:

1) Gives the model a power weapon.
2) Gives the unsaved wounds caused by the Daemon's close combat attacks special rules.

The special rules are in no way related to the power weapon other than that both are given by Soul Devourer. In other words, if the Daemon chose not to attack with the power weapon for some reason, he/she/it would still receive the special rules granted.

Response in the NOVA forums from our Chief Appearance Judge, Geoff R.

Geoff's perhaps not possessed of much flowery language, but he knows his stuff on the appearances front, here's his response re: that question:

To avoid undue complication to the appearance judging for armies that include allied forces, we are not going to judge the allied detachment as a separate part. We expect the allied contingent to be painted to the same standard as the rest of the army, but not necessarily like the rest of the army, (you do not need to paint your Gray Knight allies in jungle camouflage to accompany your Catachan guard, for example. Yes, I spelled gray correctly.) However, we do expect that you paint, base and present the allied detachment in such a way that its status as a part of the army is readily visibile. The how of this is entirely up to you,the player. This is a creativity thing, no?

This is part of our Unity category on the NOVA Open appearance scorecard, and is worth up to 15 points, out of 100. Also note that basing is worth up to 10 points out of 100, so that 1/4 of your total score rests here. For the Army score, we emphasize the 'army' aspect-- unity of time and pace and force, almost as much as the painting aspect. This is to be fair to those players of modest painting skills who can still put a visually appealing and understandable army on the table.

@dj

RAW seems to favor DarkCorsair:

"The Daemon can reach into an enemy's body, wrench out its soul and devour it. The Daemon counts as armed with a power weapon. In addition, if a model suffers any unsaved wounds from the Daemon's close combat attacks, it must immediately take a leadership test for each wound suffered (on its own leadership value, the model cannot use another model's LD for this test). If any of these tests are failed the victim suffers instant death."

Note the additional rules aren't directly part of the power weapon. So RAW I think DarkCorsair is correct but RAI I'd say it isn't meant to be seperate and would now be written as a unique power weapon.

It uses Allies FOC

So..

1 HQ
2-3 Troops
1 Elite
1 Fast
1 Heavy

IF you want a fortification you have to give up either a Elite, Fast or Heavy spot for it.

At least this is how I ready it in the packet. So the ONLY changes from Allied FOC are you can take a 3rd troop and you have to sacrifice one of your special slots for a fortification.

On your last question. No your 1k has to be the same for both doubles games.

So if it uses the Allies FOC(I read this as both armies being treated as the allied addition) I am assuming this limits your team to only two armies and additional forces cant be used as allies.

example: SM teammate cant bring tau as additional allied army in his 1k list and his ork teammate would not be able to bring a farseer with bikes in his half.

is that right?

Yes, because of the restrictions a player would only be able to select from one Codex for his Doubles list. You can still build a normal list for your Singles list.

Instead of the Doubles list being two individuals with their own allies, each individual IS an ally.

So for clarification;

"Doubles—Each player must also create and bring a Doubles list. This list follows the rules for an Allied Detachment according to the Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Rulebook, with two exceptions:
You may convert either 0-1 Elite, 0-1 Heavy, or 0-1 Fast Attack into 0-1 Fortifications"

Does this mean, for the doubles, that each persons 1k list can have a fortification? I.e. you can have 2 fortifications (one per player) in the Doubles game?

NOVA FAQ question: Question on the assault rules. When charging with two squads, A and B, charging into squad C. If squad A makes its assault first, overwatch is declined and they make their base to base for assault, can squad B be overwatched when it declares its charge? asked due to subphases and has a big impact on assault armies.

Once a squad basees you, you're locked/engaged, and you can't overwatch subsequently. So if you choose to "Wait," and get pinned by the first assaulters, NO you cannot overwatch subsequently. That's how we've ruled it in the FAQ at present, and that'ls how we'll rule it for NOVA (this year at least).

That's one of those ones GW might change.

It is referring to game turn, just the same as the rule that states you are defeated if you have no forces remaining on the table at the end of the turn.

This is the rules:

"Game Turns and Player Turns" Page 9, bold text:
"'Whenever a rule refers to 'a turn' it always means 'player
turn' unless it specifically refers to a 'game turn'."

"Infintrate" Page 38:
"...A unit that deploys using these rules
cannot charge in the first turn."

There is no emphasis on 'Player Turn' so I am confused by the above post claiming it's not allowed.

I don't see why this is a problem, no matter if the infiltrators are going first or second the enemy has one turn to react.
If anything it's more balanced this way.

Unholy_Martyr wrote:It is referring to game turn, just the same as the rule that states you are defeated if you have no forces remaining on the table at the end of the turn.

On page 122 it says:
"...likewise, if at the end of any game turn, one player has no models
on the battlefield, his opponent automatically wins."

In this case it makes a note of saying 'Game Turn' unlike in the rules for Infiltrate.

Heh. I did that last year. IIRC, I got paired against 6 Grey Knights armies over 13 games. Lost all but one of them

I'm actually in a similar boat as Hulksmash; deciding whether to go Space Wolves or Daemons. I'm leaning towards Space Wolves, just cause they're so much better painted than my Daemons, but we'll see.

What do we need to bring to complete registration? Just a copy of our army list? Reason I'm asking is I work on thursday and will have to pop in during lunch to register. Would be a lot easier if I didn't have to lug an army on the metro.

While you can register on Thursday, and all you need are ALL copies of your army list, you do not have to register on Thursday; registration will be open more or less all day on Friday as well.

Basically, if you're ONLY playing in the 40k GT, you can register up til about 1:30 on Friday. If you're taking advantage of the other events you can play alongside the GT, such as the Narrative or Trios, you'll need to register Thursday (first round of each is Thursday PM).

A couple of quick questions that I didn't notice were FAQ'd.

1) With Coteaz's "I've Been Expecting You", does Coteaz and his unit have to be within 12" of the Board Edge to take shots at Flyers arriving from Reserve, or can they resolve the shots after they've finished their movement? I can see the case either way but it makes more sense for the latter option as that would mean Deep Striking units would get hit before they even scatter.

2) Does a Dreadknight armed with a Greatsword re-roll everything and still strike at S10 from the DCCW? I ask this because the entry says a model equipped with the weapon gets those benefits instead of saying a model using this weapon. RAW sounds like you would get both bonuses, is this logic correct?

You can in theory register for the Narrative as late as Friday at some point during the day, at that point effectively taking Thursday as your Narrative Day Off.

That said, I'd suggest participating on Thursday as well

You can register upon arrival, Ed, but if you two are thinking about participating, I'd much appreciate having you send the lists you'd use, along with any affiliated fluff creations, etc., so that we have an idea in advance where to slot you competitively.

That said, when people look at the Narrative mission pack, and see the amazing LED-lit monuments ... I think we'll get a lot of on the spot sign-ups.

It's going to be a very fun way to spend the evenings in the gaming hall.

Some late breaking information ...

In the form or both raffles and silent auctions, the NOVA has a plethora of artwork available this year.

The work of local artists includes 4 NOVA-unique limited edition prints incorporating some of the themes of our games, that can't be unveiled until you arrive ... available in posters, art prints, and sets of 4 canvas gliches ... with the artist there to sign them. Samples of her work:
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/532239_490498780964781_1930902991_n.jpg
http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/252765_494502017231124_1059393368_n.jpg

We're also receiving as swag some prints from acclaimed artist Florian Stitz, perhaps best known for his work for PP. http://www.florianstitz.de/portfolio.html

At this point I'm ridiculously excited about NOVA myself ... which is good, b/c many of the most stressful parts of prep are now behind us.
This is my "what did I get myself into" face ...
http://www.novaopen.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/photo-5-1024x768.jpg

If you've absent-mindedly forgotten to book your hotel room, the block and $85/night rate closes tonight .... meaning you'll be stuck paying $25/night more or more, but the NOVA will still get room block credit for you.

We have over 100 more people staying at the hotel this year than last, so room is also getting a little tight. Despite being one of the nicer hotels in the area of Crystal City, we secure the cheapest rates possible for any nearby hotel due to the Hyatt wanting us back ... don't miss out on them by being absent-minded right at the end.

(PS - as always, this is just a PSA for ya'll's benefit ... we've already crushed our room block numbers, well beyond last year's total attendance, so the NOVA is good either way!)

- Mike

GK FAQ:

Q.When are the shooting attacks from Coteaz's I've Been Expecting You special rule fired?
A. They are fired as soon as a unit that is a valid target is placed on the board. Once the shooting attack has been resolved, the unit may complete its move. If the unit is arriving by Deep Strike, this will be after the scatter has been resolved.

So yes, you have to be within 12" of the Board Edge to take shots at Flyers coming in from reserve when they hit table.

No. If you take a sword, you can either strike with the sword and it's unique rules, or you strike with the Doomfist and it's unique rules.

No. If you take a sword, you can either strike with the sword and it's unique rules, or you strike with the Doomfist and it's unique rules.

Both of your interpretations of the rules above appear incorrect to me, explanation below:

1) The flyer must be placed on the board first, because of this you'd need to be within 12 inches of the flyer, once placed on board edge. Not just semantics, this is a difference of 6 inches or so. I still think it's a silly way to rule it, but hey, thems the breaks.

2) The sword does not have to wielded or used in combat, a dreadknight who buys one gets it's unique rules. The wording is "A model with a nemesis greatsword...etc". Unlike other entries, which use the term wield, or when used in combat, etc. If you take the sword, you dreadknight has the rules, and it would apply even if the dreadknight chooses to swing with it's doomfists, as you still meet the above criteria (you are a model with a nemesis greatsword).

You can find the relevant debate on the greatsword in YMDC, it's a lengthy one

Dot your i's and cross your t's attendees ... make sure you're filling out your schedule during the event to make the most of your trip, if you haven't yet. There's plenty of opportunities for open / pick-up gaming, and we'll even help organize that on Sunday morning to a degree.

Additionally, you'll be able to drop into things like Seminars should you wish, or register for them in advance.

There's also always the Narrative, which continues on Sunday and which you can take a round off of during the weekend, and there's ALSO the opportunity to visit DC (unless you're a local, and then I totally get it).

Long and short, there'll be formal and open gaming opportunities, seminar opportunities, vendor opportunities, and random social / tourist opportunities.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As a PS - The NOVA Open's open gaming is 24/7. Any open tables (and there should e open tables for ALL game systems, by design, at all times) are available at any time, day or night, for open gaming.

There are a few additional areas around the halls where you can play different kinds of games should you so desire.

Unfortunately there's no bar crawl this year. There just wasn't enough time to properly structure it in. That said, I can help advise on "spur of the moment" bar crawl activities (just find me and ask where to go and how to get there), since the entirety of Washington DC is Metro accessible from the Hyatt (with a very short trip to the heart of the city, Crystal City is basically part of DC).

We'll probably be adding more and more social activities involving the city proper back in next year, as we stabilize our large expansions into seminars, higher numbers of vendors, and a full day gaming and activities cycle (vs. just "during the day" tournaments).

I did personally greatly enjoy the bar crawl last year, and can't help but reiterate a bravo to the New England team that managed to go to EVERY SINGLE BAR on the crawl (it wasn't designed for that to be possible, we hadn't thought), and still made it up in time for the next day's GT (well, except for one ...).

I am ridiculously excited at this point. Also, we've had like 44 sales in the past 2 days, of various things, mostly new people who are signing up for Convention stuff last minute.

I can't wait to welcome everyone ... the staff has been monumental, and the spit and polish to this year's event is palpable in everything from our signage to our lit monuments.

We're all very excited to share the by far biggest, most populous, and most polished NOVA Open yet. Move in starts for us Wednesday morning at 8AM!

Can't wait to see you again, also, Mr. Townsend ... class acts always welcome.

Hey Mike, I know I'd PM'ed you about this before but didn't end up swapping my GT registration for any other event. So can you just give it to some chap who registers late (i.e. let them play for free)? Seriously, I don't have anything to do with it otherwise Or I guess you can just take it as a donation to the event if that is not possible to work out. Whatever you like, really!

I am still going to use my weekend badge and come check everything out. Looking forward to it a lot! Question is will Hulk rock this event like his team did Nova

Sounds good, buddy

Also, make sure you pick up your swag bag and your guidebook ... the guidebooks this year are professional magazines, basically, and worth having / hanging onto ... no reason not to pick yours up even if you can't play.

I'm overwhelmed as I start listing off what we've been able to improve this year ... based on survey responses we literally tried to simply fix everything:"

We made the hotel cheaper, the add-ons cheaper, the mark-ups cheaper, the beer cheaper, the food cheaper.
We got full cell and 4g/3g service throughout.
We paid for additional lighting to be brought in throughout the hall to brighten it up.
We brought in seminars and tons of vendors (including some that were requested in survey).
We brought in even more swag and prizes, I think like 60 or 70k in total prizes.

There’s more, I think … but basically everything that was requested in survey response, we did our best to bring in. And, we kinda almost did it all haha!

And when I say we, I mean we ... the NOVA staff surges to as many as 80 volunteers, and a tirelessly amazing partner. They're the ones to thank, anyone who enjoys this weekend!

Mike, is there food on site? I know there's the weekend meal deal, but I'm talking about other than that. I imagine some of the vendors could make a killing simply selling granola bars and sodas.

A killing that's against hotel policy and competes with them, so sadly no. meal deal is tasty and affordable, though, and the NOVA even slightly subsidizes it to achieve best reasonable rate.

The NOVA doesn't get anything from the Meal Deal; in fact, again, we actually pay a little if you order one. It's just important to us to make sure attendees have GOOD food available to them affordably without having to leave the convention, between rounds/etc.

Most armies seem to have a few flyers, but I don't think there were too many.

I got the luck of being matched up against Tony Kopach round 1 Suffice to say I lost. He's running lots of grey hunters on foot with a giant allied Guard Blob led by Njal. Pretty nasty, but it was pretty close - with better dice I would have won at the end, and I also made a rather big mistake at the beginning. Was loads of fun though, I'm pumped for tomorrow! I'm going for a 4-1 Ren Man win baby!

Epic Sadface for Daemons. They'll probably ruin my day on Saturday :(

And there were a good many flyers and the invitational.

Favorite part of the evening: While being informed on the rulings on the Doomscythe, Neil from the 11th Company loses all focus on the rest of the discussion and says: "So you mean I can shoot behind me and through walls?"

As far as I could tell, 4-5 Grey Hunter Squads lead by Terminators, Njal, Blob of I.G., not sure on the H.Q. for the I.G.

From memory -

Njal
5x Grey Hunter squads, 4 w/ 2x Plasma and 1 w/ 2x Melta. All wolf standard and each lead by a PF Wolf Guard Terminator
2x Lone Wolves w/ Chainfists
Primaris Psyker
5 man PCS w/ no upgrades
50 man Blob Squad w/ 5x Power Axes

And...yeah, that's pretty much the list. I think it's a solid list, but it has some glaring weaknesses and some armies are simply going to crush it.

Well you can add me into the list of losing to Tony. He decimated both of my wraith+destroyer lord units with the combo of jaws, enfeeble, and 50 lasguns using frfsrf. I came up short on an assault and that sealed the deal.

It's an interesting list, I definitely did not help myself any with how I deployed/moved/target prioritized.

I thought jaws didn't work on jump infantry. I must have been mistaken.

They now stated Jump Infantry are a type of Infantry; check the jump type rules. As a result, they follow affects to both, and are thus now jawsable. It was an eye opener when first brought to my attention too, at a local nova prep-our-judges tourney earlier in August.

Round 3 is wrapping up, lots of close matches again.

Not too specifically, no. For now this is all anecdotal, but we're getting almost no "rush," and the very visible majority are relaxing/wrapping up/handing in before or well before the 2.5 hour limit hits.

I have talked to a lot of people who are playing in the invitational on the other hand and it seems like a lot of games are not finishing on time with 2.5 hours for 1750 points.

The Sternguard pounded me flat, I'm 2-1 in the invitational

And the Open is 2.5 with the Invitational being 2 hours.

I finished all of my games with 2 invite games going to 7, one going to 6, and my two open games with one going to 6 and one going to 5. Those are the rolled for finishes. Though some people do seem to be having trouble at the Invitational finishing.

Just curious, but what was the reasoning behind having the 40k open begin on a friday this year? A lot of folks couldn't attend this year because of that it would seem... Is it simply a logistical decision, or something else? Is it expected to be the same next year? I hope to be able to go, regardless.

I think their reasoning was it was easier on the players (which it definitely was!) and gave them an opportunity to participate in several other events and seminars that were going on this past weekend. It's also a lot easier to play 2 games then 4 then 2 again instead of 4 and 4. It gets very tiring!

This event was amazing! thanks Mike and everyone for running such a great event! I highly recommend people look into the Narrative event which was huge fun and a huge success IMHO. All the guys playing were super into it. I really enjoyed the hobby seminars too. The best part is you quickly end up playing against players of similar skill/list strength and everyone is generally in a great mood. Normally when there is a argument or someone having a bad time near your table, everyone is kinda aware and I didn't hear any arguments or angryfaces anywhere near where I was playing. (outside one guy who rolled trip 1s twice in a row)

If you have a chance to make it, I would recommend it. I am blocking off Labor day for the forseeable future!

Hah thanks Ragnar, my game against Nick for the semifinal in the GT was the closest and most fun, competitive, emotional game I have actually played of 40k. We danced around the table vying for objectives and on the last turn he made his move to take one objective while contesting all other ones. Long story short, 4 wounds on his final plaguebearer with a 5 ++ and FNP. Makes all 4. Great game against an amazing opponent. I was very happy to see him move on with the hopes of winning, sadly it was not meant to be and Tony continued again to exemplify his prowess in the nova format with this wolves with the win.

Hey! Your list changed from that of GK discussion thread. I actually like this list better than the one with the apothecary and techmarine.

I lost to Kurt just before he played Tony. I would have like to have seen what my paladin's precision shots could have done to Tony's army.

I second everything here. Highly recommended!!

Once I get a few minutes I am going to blog a full review of the Narrative, but here is the cliff notes version:

The Narrative was a 4-game campaign with an invader team and a defender team. There were objectives that helped your team but there were also objectives that you could pursue for you own personal glory (antagonists/protagonists). It made for a really fun dynamic with a lot of different ways to play the games.

Basically the players in the narrative play single 1-on-1 battles against other players but points are scored as a team. So you were either defending the forces of earth or invading it. The missions for each game were the same, but there were side missions which you could also do to be famous or infamous. Also, the losing side would be granted covert missions which are hidden to help them fight back. Depending how the teams did every night, the story changed so there was a decision tree of possible outcomes. You sometimes need to kill characters, sometimes be aloof and not engage in battle, secure objectives with your warlord. Pairings were done ETC style where the two commanders would nominate someone to defend or attack a landmark and someone to take them on.

A quick rundown of what happened from my understanding (official storyline and missions I bet will be put online soon):
*An alien race which assimilates planets inspected earth in the 20th century and saw they were a warlike, not so technologically advanced race and slated the planet for invasion and sent an Invasion force. Due to not having faster than light travel, the Alien commander arrived with this forces and found 300 years later, Earth was peaceful but technologically advanced, which means a Diplomatic envoy should have been sent instead... But what the Alien high council doesn't know won't hurt them right? So the invasion begins!!!

Game 1: This was a pretty straight forward battle. Aliens were invading and the Invaders won the first night which gave the a foothold on DC basically taking it over.

Game 2: Because the forces of earth were so taken off guard, they had to fight with resistance tactics. Every Defender commander was given a covert mission to upload a virus to the alien systems to cause them issues. They accomplished this by taking over an objective in the invader's deployment zone. So as the game went on, people had no idea wat the covert mission was until it is revealed by accomplishing it. Of course some commanders had a hunch when shooty Imperial guard were issuing orders to 'run run run' across the battlefield for no apparent reason! The defenders of earth succeeded and turned the tide.

Game 3: With the Forces of earth picking up steam and putting the invaders back, One of the key logistical aspects of the invasion force was exposed. The invaders would use powerful Psykers to move things, communicate and other things and the Defenders had pushed back to find them on the battlefield. While both armies had the goal of securing terrain pieces, all the Defenders knew was the invaders had a powerful Psyker on the battlefield for no apparent reason... Invaders had a covert mission to keep him alive the entire game... and the defenders quickly decided a random psyker on the field probably meant 'kill it with fire!'

Game 4: The earth defenders killed a ton of psykers... and really reclaimed a lot of ground. The invaders were being pushed back! Most of the invader troops are just soliders following orders but this planet was way to technologically advanced. Some of the troops on the ground decided that the invader commander has broken intergalactic law with his illegal invasion and think he should be reported to the Alien high council! Every invader had secret units which were quietly uneasy and if reduced to 50% or less strength, they would attempt to surrender and defect tot he Defender's side. If the unit defected and survived he battle, the Defenders would be able to alert the Alien high council of the invader's illegal invasion. Of course the invaders have orders to kill traitors. Defenders would randomly begin killing units only to find out "hey, this unit is giving up and now under your control!"

Final results: The Invading Commander was able to have almost every traitor to the man put down and squash the Defender's ability to get any way to communicate with the Alien High Council. The invaders packed up and vanished as quickly as they came, leaving DC ransacked and destroyed. Only the Alien commander can report what happened, and I am sure any report he gives will justify his assault and paint earth's defenders in a bad light! We will only know what happens next when 2013 rolls around!

It was a great event and everyone playing had an awesome time. It reminded me a *LOT* of the types of missions from old GWGTs from 3rd edition and adde an extra element to the game a people could decide which aspect of the game they wished to play. If they wanted personal glory, to carry the team or focus on secret missions or all 3. Because it was night gaming, there were a few guys who were not playing in the GT who were able to take hobby seminars and sightsee with their wife during the day and then get some 40k in at night. A good way to participate in NOVA Open even if you can't come all weekend or do the GT.

Hi

Mike et al - Thanks for the great event. And thanks to my various opponents for the great games. Congrats to Tony and Alex and Joe (best appearance) and everyone else who took home something.

I had two cracks at Tony, and came up short in both. The first was round three of the invitational, and we only managed four turns before the 15 minutes warning. I would have loved to play it out - I am not sure I could have turned it around, but I would have liked to have had the chance.

The second was round four of Open, and I was one failed armour save (or a turn 6 - but a two was rolled...) away from winning on Victory points.

Really looking forward to seeing the overall standings for the invitational.

Cheers,
Nate

Here is a start at least. My list from the 2k and the 1750. Covers 2 of the 8 at least
1750--
D lord with fun stuff
3x5 warrs with Scythes
5 morts walking on
11 wraiths with 6 whips i think
5 scarabs
3 spyders
2 Doom scythes.

Pretty simple, not very complicated .

2k--
D lord again
Barge lord with scythe and scarabs
1 cryptek with abyssal staff

5 deathmarks in scythe

5 warrs in scythe
5 morts in scythe
2x5 morts walking on

12 wraiths with 6 whips
6 scarabs

2 A--barges
3 spyders

Sorry I just didnt feel like retyping them out for real.
If you want Nicks list he probably has it on his blog or will post it himself.
Fennel just posted his there is another 1 of the 8.
I think Kopachs list was already stated a few times, at 1750 he just drops the fangs like you all said. 45 grey hunters, 6 plas, 2 melt, 1 flamer. blob with axes, njal, primares.
Then Neils was posted somewhere I bet.
But general idea was---5 troops in scythes, 3 Annhilation barges, then 3 squads of wraiths i believe. I am unsure of his HQ though.
Nicks list was---fatey--20 plagues--15 screamers--18 flamers- 2 flying slaanesh princes flying around at 2k.

I ended up 3-2 in the invitational (my losses being Tony & Andrew Gonyo) and 4-2 in the open (losses being Alex & a Paladin list on a quarters missions I had no good answer for). Pretty happy with that for my first major GT.

Looking forward to seeing final standings for both events, is there any way we can see our paint scores?

Seconds and thirds on being the best event I have attended since last years NOVA. The Open pairings and table arrangements were seemingly error free, like one 10 minute delay or so. Food readily available right by the gaming area. The ability to relax a little on Sunday if so desired, and if you lost some games. The Narrative Event was super cool and Nemesor Zahndrek/Vargard Obyron took home the protaganist prize with a fluffy dual monolith/dual tomb stalker build. I can not say enough about the group of persons that put this event together. The amount of prize support they get from sponsors is tremendous and they pass all that back to the players. Every single person who stayed for the awards ceremony took home some form of prize, every one. I will have more thoughts coming after I recover from lotsa table-top gaming squeezed in between two 11 hour drives. Congrats to all of the top table persons, job well done!

THANKS NOVA STAFF !!!!!!!

Thanks all for the best NOVA yet, it's the attendees that make it happen as much as the staff and organizers.

With over 600 pairs of feet walking through with weekend badges and day passes, this was also the largest NOVA ever ... and to have gotten to THAT big on the charts of tabletop wargaming events in such a short period of time is really a testament to the hard work of our staff, and the awesome caliber of our attendees.

Just a note, many of the local Warmahordes players did not know about the day passes, or only found out about them last minute.

If you are going to offer them next year, if you could make that information available earlier that event will explode, as there's a gigantic player base around here that would love to come out for Saturday/Sunday warmahordes tournies.

The turnout looked really good in the warmahordes room even despite that, though.

This year at least, we required a weekend badge to participate in any tournaments except Infinity (which was only a day long). That's why the day passes were not sufficient / advertised as sufficient for WM/H participation.

That said, I think we had over 50 WM/H registrations, nearly doubling from last year, so it was definitely a success in that sense! Brendon and Nate and the other Gangers who helped them out received a lot of accolades, and Games and Stuff deserves additional praise for really putting the WM/H prize total into the thousands in value.

The Paint scores were definitely harsher overall this year, with a couple of outliers that were perhaps scored a little high. We'll be doing a little work on the appearance scoring front for next year, to ensure that we maintain the proper distribution (that DID happen this year), and iron out any lowball or highball outliers.

You performed well, as usual, Brad ... and congratulations to winning Best Sportsmanship.

Hopefully next year a day pass will be usable for the Warmahordes events. Like I said, you'd see an explosion in participation! Which would offset the "lost revenue" from weekend badges (and many folks would get weekend badges, anyway, assuming the day pass was priced appropriately, since many people wanted to come on more than one day).

I agree that Brendon and Nate (et al) did fantastic

Awesome tournament, best one I've ever been to by a mile. (And first one anywhere near this size).

Q about the painting scores: Are you going to publish a more detailed description of the factors that went into each score. My overall painting score was pretty low, and I think it was at least partially due to not having a display board. But truthfully I am a little disappointed in the score and it would be nice to get more feedback for how to sow up a better score - the painting judges were saying nice things about my army as were lots of passers by!

I am curious what people thought about the 'limits' on the ruleset now that most of us got to play in multiple events with different formats and possibilities for next year? Was there a format which just didn't work at all? Or are some of the limits simply not needed?

What are people thinking about:
*1999+1 vs 2000 (single force org vs double force org)
*Fortifications in general and the limit of them
*Allies
*Forgeworld units/Codexes

I agree FW seems like overkill. Contrary to what many thought, flyers did not overwhelm or dominate so no need for FW in order to balance the game. If anything they might just do the exact opposite.

No telling what double FOC chart would do but I personally do not want to see 6 units of wraiths....ever.

Love allies, it doesn't really break anything too badly and led to some great outside the box thinking and unique builds.

Fortifications were fine and helped trim the effectiveness of flyers. Anything bigger like the fortress would have been impractical, even the ADL was tricky to place in some cases.

I strongly support including 40k-stamped ForgeWorld units. Unlike the double FOC, allowing Forgeworld actually opens up the game to new models and new interesting (but not game-breaking) possibilities.

I'm mildly against the idea of double FOC... it seems like it would only really make much difference IF someone thinks of something broken to do with it.

Allies - loved em. Everyone seems to love them so I doubt any organizers will seriously consider doing without them.

Fortifications were fine, but there needs to be a lot more FAQing about how damage to Bastions actually works. In other words: a Manticore drops 2 missiles on a bastion with a Quad Gun on the top, a unit on the battlements, and a unit inside. What happens? Mike, any chance of getting the full scores for the Narrative? I am just curious about my painting/theme scores. Also as a super minor quibble, my name that will go down in infamy is Bobby Birrer not Robert Birrer. Once again, awesome event!

Flyers didn't dominate? 3 of the 6 games I played had flyers and they were a major factor in my losses.

I was the same. Flyers were a major part of why I lost 3 games. Their only weakness is the table quarter mission, and I just did not play them during those missions.

What kind of lists were you guys running that Fliers caused such an issue? Most of my games weren't decided by primary objectives so against Fliers I would have just tried to force Quarters over and over. I think balanced Flyer lists are dangerous but the all-in Flyer lists seem to be fairly weak (at least in the NOVA missions).

Yeah it's funny Fliers aren't so nasty when you include Quarters. That is an overall sense though. If you play the list in the Quarters mission your happy, otherwise maybe miserable.

I really wish GW would have found a way to make them balanced. No matter what they do with them I expect they will be over the top or garbagy. It really seems like people who want to be competitive will just have to design there lists to beat fliers in the same fashion that people designed there lists to beat marines or in later years Nob Bikers. Lists heavy with Fliers seem like they would severely limit what # of types of lists would be competitive but unlike when Nob Bikers did that there is a very limited number of things that are good against them. It seemed like every codex could build a list to beat the ol' Nob Bikers.

Yeah, the fliers were a bit ridiculous. I faced about 20 of them over the weekend and downed 4. While my two dakka jets died every single game.

They were annoying but only the 3 Valkryies in one list contributed to one of my losses.(The others were due to me not caring and wanting to sleep in on Sunday )

Oddly didn't mind the flyer lists over the weekend. In the 13 games I played I probably ran into around 20 flyers and 5 of them were Stormravens ( I hate AV12 flyers....). To be honest, other than the mobility they offerred there wasn't a single instance of them being a problem. But I feel 6th has shifted to durability being key so I had a crap ton of models

That was my problem. In the Nova Open I played a Dark Eldar foot horde and I had no durablity. Stormravens just flew around me and took me apart with their hurricanne bolters and psybolt ammo.

My Draigo list for the Invitational faced 2 necron air force armies and they killed everything but the paladins. If I was to do it again I would take 20 paladins.

Necron flyers were definitely a huge pain to deal with for most armies. I was able to down a few with my Vendettas and by using Bring it Down on melta units, but otherwise they had free reign. However, I did notice that the majority of people using flyers were unaware of the 45 degree vertical arc of fire restriction for hull-mounted weapons. Lots of Necron players were basically landing on top of their targets and shooting at angles that were not legal.

Tony definitely had the right idea for dealing with them--rather than trying to shoot them down (apart from Njal), just cover and the board and give them nowhere to go.

Being one of those players who used flyers. ( 3 in the GT, 5 in the Invitational )
I would say they were great, and garbage. For example in my first game of the invitational I was able to drop troops anywhere on the board on the bottom of the final turn to win the game and get good shots off, this strategy also allowed me to win against Blackmoor, gonyo, and kyle cox. Without the ability to deploy troops anywhere to sit on an objective I would have been SOL in some of those situations.

But, then I played armies where they were absolute trash, for example against little Kopach he had 2nd turn so he was able to mitigate their damage then counter with his own flyers. Then in another game against Tony my flyers did almost nothing, they killed a total of MAYBE 15 models with 5 flyers 2 of which being doom scythes. So in all honesty in a large GT where you must be able to complete the mission, I would say they are a crutch. Playing with them felt like I was using one of the most powerful tools, yet it limited my abilities to influence the game at certain points.

In most tournaments where there are no quarters missions I believe flyers will prevail more often than not, but with quarters it balances out the fact flyers are slightly too strong in this edition.

Blackmoor, if you had 20 pallies..I would have just shook your hand and walked away

I saw the illegal shooting argument more than once. There were some sketchy Necron shooting in my games too but luckily my opponents agreed and began playing it right moving forward.

I also saw some flyers modeled to point at the ground, so I am curious the result of those games.

I have to say Flyers were what did me in. I can handle Eldrad being in every army because you can throw enough dice and eventually get through the 2+ reroll. I couldn't even throw dice at the flyers most times. A large portion of my Anti-tank has zero effect on flyers as Deffrollas, PKs and Artillery do nothing.

I will be taking a ADL in every army I play forever now. That is my life now.

I can't imagine allowing FW units in can possibly unbalance the game any more than allies have.

In fact, even superheavies are really not that imbalanced at least the smaller ones. With the new rules for hull points, the differences between a bane blade and a squadron of 3 leman russ are pretty much cosmetic. But I realise that might be above what some people would tolerate for the main event.

Thanks to everyone for being such wonderful players. I was the extremely tall (and extremely stressed out) guy running scoring this year, and I sincerely appreciate everyone's patience while we dealt with a few hiccups in between some of the matches. Special thanks to Neil of the 11th Company for writing such awesome software; it made my life so much easier than before.

If anyone has any questions about scoring, or how much of my life span was reducing by having 186 people watching me stare at a computer screen, I'll be happy to answer them.

I do recommend checking out Infinity though.

Thank you for being so patient. When you're putting in 93 entries as fast as possible it's really easy to get something transposed, and that's exactly what happened a few times. Next year I'm going to look into something like using scanning software so players can just bubble in their scores (remember Scantrons from school?) and then I scan the whole thing.

If you maneuver correctly against Flyers then Stunned and Immobilised results kill them as well as Explodes!. Even if they are GK you might be able to stop the Fortitude.

I think people will design their lists with them in mind if they want to be competitive. Even without doing that people might start taking advantage of all the issues Flyers have. Also Table Quarters by VP with only scoring and denial counting should help even out Flyers at least in a kharmic sense.

That was an ongoing fight due to people having different opinions on fire arcs and some people modeling to point at the ground. In a meta where flyers all fly level and can only point down 22 degrees, they have blindspots which can be out manuvered. What people wanted to do is put the base of the flyer 1" from the target and shoot directly down.

The vodka was not pleasant. Fortunately, the bar upstairs had a supply of Laphroaig, so all was not lost.

Awesome weekend for my first tournament in the US, and more than happy with a 9th place overall finish and getting to play on Sunday (after not enough sleep again...).

I didn't have all that much trouble with flyers actually. My own vendetta scored a load of kills but my quad gun was consistently useless. I had a game against a guy with 6 vendettas and two manticores but it ended up going in my favour on objectives, and his flyers were looking very much the worse for wear. I do think it's a problem for armies that can't easily deal with them though, and that's quite a lot of armies right now.

Hi

Is there anyplace where I can see the lists that took highest places? like top 20, or 10, or at least 5

What in the fething feth Mike? 100,000 scovilles and vodka are both abysmal on their own. This sounds like death in a bottle. *Makes note to try and attend next year*

No, the lists are not posted anywhere, if there's a specific list you want to know about however you could probably ask and one of us who was there could roughly fill in the blanks

Heart of Gold?! Don't offend my griefing sensibilities with that heinous award!
