Sorry about the delay on the new items, Chicago is in a state of weather flux right now. Two new items this weekend!
I need feedback on a set of arms. Given that there are 5 possible poses, would you want:
A) 5 arms with rifles
B) 4 arms with rifles and one set with sidearm and close combat weapon?
New arms are being sculpted and I'd like some immediate input from you guys.
Thanks,

Personally I think the option for a side arm and cc weapon would be the better choice, especially if you plan on expanding the range later on? that way if you release another set with different arm positions e.g at rest pointing down, finger outside trigger guard, changing clips, things like that you can include another variant of the arms with rifles on that sprue, I would like to see some good sighting poses made for them, with your heads it would look exquisite!!

Since they are in resin, it should be easy enough to carefully cut the tip off. I am considering a shoulder light for the torso, still haven't got to finishing it yet.
@shingouki: I'm sorry to hear that, I can't do much about the shipping costs, I wish I could.

Would go for B. As it seems commercially the more usual option.
But including the ideas of Nerdfest, as i think that people might look for more variation in their miniatures poses and not for the same they find more commonly.

I may be the wierdo here, but I'd actually pay an extra few cents for a set to have five sets of weapon arms AND a set of close combat weapon arms. I would honesty rather pay a little bit more and get all I need than to be shorted and end up having to get another set. For example, if you were to, in the future, release a mixed set of heads, I'd think five helmets and one patrol cap would be the best mix. Or if you do a boxed set of Colonial Guard, make it ten infantry AND one heavy weapons team, allowing me to swap in and out, rather than be painted into the corner of having to use what you give me. Again, I may be alone on this, and maybe you aren't able, based off your current setup to do six sets on a single sprue, but that would probably be optimum.
Additionally, the pule rifles seem to have a large grey piece of chewing gum with a thumbprint on the side of them. I'd fire your mold maker. Automatically Appended Next Post: By the way, a set of plastic Colonial Whatever would probably sell like hot cakes. Not alot of (reasonably priced) competition there and I'd figure there's plenty of demand.

@noneoftheabove0: You make a good point, perhaps I'll reconsider that.
More colonial stuff is certainly a possibility. I need to take it slow, build things up, but probably not plastic...just resin or metal.

I can't take all the credit, Spatcave studios manufactured the armor (Spatcave also makes Imperial Guard Cadian armor http://www.spatcave.com/40kcostume.htm)
I had the BDU's custom made in china... had to assemble and paint the pulse rifle... Matsucorp custom made the shoulder lamp... it was an expensive project Automatically Appended Next Post: mad robot wrote:@noneoftheabove0: You make a good point, perhaps I'll reconsider that.

I too think that plastic not-USCM colonial marines would sell like hotcakes. Have you thought about running a Kickstarter to fund a plastic set of them? I have no doubt in my mind you'd get the funds to do it in a day or two. Sorta like what Defiance was trying to do, except, well, you could do it way better.
45264
Post by: mad robot
I appreciate the kind words, Kickstarters of that ilk are quite a bit to manage. You may see a KS in the summer for something, for right now I can keep up this pace of releases and stay flexible with what I want to add into the mix as new ideas arise.

Honestly, I don't understand why everyone gets upset with the plastic/resin debate. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of metal, it's kind of a pain in the kiester to work with, but plastic and resin are equally easy. Unless you have bought stock in plastic glue, there is no real reason to have an opinion between the two. Pardon me for putting plastic when I intended non-metal.

Thats because most people are asking small independent miniature companies to produce plastic kits which have a large outlay and is time consuming, you have to remember these companies are just starting out ( at most a one man band 2 at most ) plus have a full time jobs as well as family and every day life.
Larger companies have the funds and structure to take this on, however I know Dreamforge have tried it with a Kickstarter (as I pledged plenty of my cash into it ) and so far seems to be proceeding ok from the updates I have seen so far, however I will know for sure once I receive my items and have the final product in my hand.
However it does seem some Kickstarters have run into issues so some people might get a little hesitant with funding, I think Steve is doing a great job so far and is trying to establish himself in a growing market and so far is doing it well.
Hopefully it will expand into plastic someday but running before walking is just not feasible.
Plastic glue does not work on resin either

What I was trying to convey is that resin is perfectly fine. People demanding the more costly and complicated plastic sprues of small companies is insane. Resin allows them to do things with more narrow appeal, which are the kind of bits we all want.

OK, I'm sold on the pulse rifles. And some of the heads. And you don't play games with the shipping - $2.00 USD? Sweet.
That brings me to something I discovered while browsing the site: there is a functionality issue with the way the shopping cart works on the site. After adding items to the cart, and then looking at other things, there is no way to get back to it your cart to check out, anywhere. The only way i can see to get back to the cart is to add something else, and then remove it. You need to check the Zen Cart shopping card sidebox properties and see what it's set to - are you suppressing this, or setting it to only show when a visitor is logged in? If it's the latter, as a design decision, it's a turnoff to new customers - no reason to put artificial roadblocks to them buying your stuff. If it's the much-more-likely-situation that it was just configured that way out of your site hosts's cpanel, you should dig into it to change it.
Also, that big top banner should be hyperlinked to go back home, even thought there is a breadcrumb trail. Less essential than the first thing though.
Those pulse rifles are sweet, btw.

You already had him ready?? Therefore only the 4 heads on the sprue?!!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman:
The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle. It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. You will become dead Marines. And then you will be in a world of gak. Because Marines are not allowed to die without permission! Do you maggots understand?

The pulse rifles are even better in the err resin detail crisp and spot on, will work perfectly with those colonial marine heads which are just amazing (will be getting more).
Heads with aviator sunglasses are just brilliant what a good idea that was the vet heads have turned out great the small bolt details have come out really well.
The bonnie hat heads were a real surprise as they look way better than the renders, the detail is nice and pronounced and will paint up well.
Now the tanker heads well they are a work of art indeed they are just great, love the goggles and coms really pull the model together.
Overall an amazing success, Steve AMAZING JOB WELL DONE

Steve,
Since you want to make figure heads for characters, I've always wanted to have A Team of specialists who are on the run. It's a reoccurring dream I have. Th leader is the wise older guy who enjoys smoking cigars and likes Jazz. Theirs a guy who's good at requisitioning item and has a pretty Face. There's a Mr. Goodwrench in the team who has a bad attitude most of the times, but is still kid friendly. Lastly theirs this guy that is a great pilot, but is more of a space cadet if you get my drift. any chance of seeing something along those lines. If needed I might be able to find some pictures of people that I believe could fit the bill nicely for inspiration.

I think you spelled "whet" wrong. The wet you wrote would indicate water ... divers ... hold on, I think I just got it! I love wordplay.
Everything you've been putting out is really top shelf. The heads look really clean and well done. I love some of your competitors heads, but alot of them are done by hand rather than by CAD, so it looks a bit more ... irregular. The CAD sculpting just looks so much cleaner and neater and well polished. Keep up the amazing work.

Just popped into this thread. I vaguely remember reading about this back in the day and only checked in now. I liked your facebook page.
For starters, they're taller than even Death Korps of Krieg figures? Uh... okay? Next, everything is true-scale? The heads really should be Larger Finally, they're in metal? Maybe I'm just spoilt for choice after seeing all the great plastics coming out of various compabnies, but I'm also not eager to go back to the days of 40K2, with everything in metal. The bases look weird as well.
The price is good, but being in all metal HURTS.
Gotta give this one a pass.
Normally I'd excited about buying just the heads, but there's more than enough people making gas mask not-IG out there
Major Hammerfaust looks good though, points for that, but the pose is a letdown. i do indeed like my space marine waving their arms in the air, bald and screaming
The alternate guns are awesome
The mohawk guys look good. If I ever do that punk rock-themed IG army, these are so going in.
Tanker head looks good, although I'd prefer if there was an option to just purchase one. How many tanker heads with mics will you need?
Boonie hads and rebreathers with beret heads look good, although I'd like to see rebreather heads with no berets
Aviator sunglass heads look good, and I like the fact there's a variety of hairstyles on them
Ever thought about doing toxic scavenger heds, punk rock heads with piercings, or punk heads with liberty spikes?

Thanks for the "Like"!
The Greatcoats feel like ancient history to me, an admitted rush on my part to get something to market when I should have waited.
Metal doesn't hurt...people who abuse metal hurt
You would not be the first.
Those aren't gas masks, they are balaclavas.
The Major is a character model, he can't be all things to all people.
Thanks for the kind words on the pulse rifles
Mohawks really are a universal hairstyle, aren't they?
Take the number of tanks you have...that's how many sets you will need.
I think rebreathers will see a return at some point.
Thanks, I try to mix things up whenever possible.
No, but I am always willing to consider new ideas. Why not PM me some more info so I can get a better idea?
I appreciate your input!

Oh WOW Steve! they look fantastic mate! I'll be buying on payday for sure! I am only torn between using 'Sly' or 'Bruce' as the head for a counts as Marbo 'Sly' is the obvious choice but 'Bruce' is my favorite! but whatever I do I'm 100% positive that the quality will be amazing!
I am using my as Vets special task force But I don't play so not such an issue for me, just use both as Marbo on alternative games

They look nice. The right one represents modern body armor with webbing for attaching your gear.
45264
Post by: mad robot
Left torso is designed to match up with the CDF heads and Pulse Rifles. Right torso is based on a modern ballistic body armor, Sick Six nailed it. The strips on the armor will look a little more subdued once they are cast.
Cost should be close to the heads we sell, about $3.50 for a set of 5. I won't know for sure until I run a few test casts.

And perfect for Squats armies
But seriously, looks good - 'hi-tech beardy heads' will be useful for quite a few armies, and aren't too common at the mo.

that´s some head-line i am particularly interested in! promising!
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
Not bad but can I just say maybe bringing the beard out slightly more where it meets the sideburns, if you look at the inspiration picture you can see what I mean.
Also the head band maybe (cant believe I am saying this ) but a bit flatter in texture, that way it is more distinguishable from the hair.
Other wise spot on hope there will be a sprue of varying grunge looks 5 man sprue again

Those torsos are unreal. Very excited to see them after casting. I love the fact that you are traveling forward in two directions, more modern and more Colonial Marines. What do you have lined up for the arms and legs? Or is this all hush hush until further notice?

I tend to think in terms of themes; jungle, desert, arctic, urban. Within each of those you can find lots cool concepts. You can also have themes like "jump troopers", "greatcoats", or "recon specialists". Those words cause most of us to think of some specific ideas. So, in my mind, it's wide open...let's make 'em all!
I want to try and avoid releasing fully realized sets, with corresponding fluff. I'm NOT saying that's a wrong approach, it's just not my approach. Instead of telling you how to use these parts, I want you to tell me how you're using them. Might seem like I'm blowing smoke, or being purposefully vague, but that's not the case. I'm just trying to share what my vision is for the future of Mad Robot. Hopefully people will like what I do next.
You can always send ideas to me as well, projects @ madrobotminiatures DOT com.
Anyways...here's a full preview of the Spec Ops Heads, due out later this month:

Make sure you also do a dual machine gun, for customers who'd like to use these bikes for ork biker boys.
Would these be the right size to fit space marines? or more for IG-sized riders? (Or even go crazy and do light and heavy versions to suit either?)

They're great. I really like both the Spec-ops heads and the Colonial Marine parts ....but you got the MOLLE vests wrong. The vertical openings of the horizontal straps should be directly on top of one another, not arranged off-centre like bricks or cinema seating.
it might seem a minor thing, but it's like sculpting a guy with his helmet or scope on backwards. If you can fix this, I'll definitely be in on buying some of these, as I already will on the other stuff I already complimented!
45239
Post by: Hekal Xul
I like this design. It would allow pouches to be offset 1/2 a slot either up/down and left/right. Blackhawk kit has continuous vertical slots(ie no gaps) but they're not staggered like these are.

Here's a fun fact: even though Starship Troopers 3 was snubbed at the Oscars (purely movie politics, I'm sure, and not a statement of quality of the movie), Casper Van Dien's chin won Best Supporting Actor.

Fair enough. The offset pattern is less common in that case (I didn't recall seeing that kind of pattern before, and I've seen a lot of MOLLE vests) but clearly I've been proved wrong in this case, so I'll apologise for stating that it's inaccurate.

Wait... What? I think you need to firstly take a chill pill and secondly work on your English language comprehension.
I don't think his business hinges on me buying anything in any way - given that I haven't bought anything from him at this stage (only becoming aware of Mad Robot quite recently) I think it's pretty safe that his business doesn't hinge on me. On the other hand, I'm not going to buy anything that I don't like, either - as none of us should. If you go back and re-read what I wrote, you'll see that I was talking about buying these vests as well as other items, and not that making any order at all hinges on him redoing the vests.

Fair point. I'll start a new thread for strong chins. I'll put it in New And Rumors. I just hope the moderators consider updates on actor's jawlines as being News worthy.
All kidding aside, the heads look incredible, and the modern torsos look staggeringly like the Improved Outer Tactical Vest I wore in Iraq. I can't wait to see them covered in kit. Keep up the amazing work.
EDIT: I can't seem to get an image to work, so feel free to Google it if interested. I should operate under the assumption no one is interested. Automatically Appended Next Post: Additionally, are you considering backpacks in the future? I feel like soldiers without a ruck don't look very soldierly. Unfortunately, most backpacks produced have fairly soft detail or just look like huge Santa sacks. It may be worth looking into, though I may just be a minority. It seems like most people are comfortable with sending their plastic soldiers into battle armed with just the magazine in their weapon and a thin coat of CLP.

Will do, Steve! However, I have two projects to finish first.
Take a look at Klaus, Not Santa's project blog though. He also received his shipment of your fine sculpts and is using them in his current diorama (on page 38 of his Dakka blog). The ironic thing is that we both ordered (and received) your products at about the same time and he lives within 30 miles of me (I think) in Germany.
I bet that he gets his models painted before I do.

Yeah, Klaus is a hobby machine. I follow everything he does with great interest. Automatically Appended Next Post: Here is a final "exploded" render of the Azog Treadbike. Off to printing next week...

Post by: mad robot
@Damo: Cheers, mate! The Major will be part of a re-evaluation of the greatcoat figures. They will be getting re-sized to fit more in line with what I'm currently putting out. I don't have a time frame but it will be a while.

Thanks Steve, just wanted to check what was happening :-) and by the sounds of it are you going to bring the greatcoats in line with your resin work by re sizing slightly and changing the casting material? as they are lovely models too!

Basically, yes. The heads are there already and the rest of the parts just need to be re-sized & re-proportioned. I just don't know if I'll be able to get to them anytime soon.

I know this will sound like a backhanded compliment, but the products you've been putting out lately so far outclass the greatcoats you first put out. They don't look bad, but you've clearly and significantly improved. I'm sure the revamp will be welcomed with opening wallets.

@noneoftheabove0: Sometimes those are the kind of lessons you have to learn when you think you know what you're doing. I learned from it and, like you said, things are going in a much better direction.
Thanks for the feedback & kind words!

Hmm, those DEVGRU heads could also be useful to repurpose for conversions, e.g. cultists, henchmen, bodyguards etc whose eyes have been replaced by bionic and/or evil equivalents.

Thanks guys, the double button jacket got me thinking of doing some Napoleonic style parts. Any interest in something like that?
-Steve

Post by: nerdfest09
I'd have to see some sketches to say personally if i'd be keen on Napoleonic products? but I know without a doubt if you did they'd be great, only problem is creating enough of a theme within a 28mm force using a few select parts for it to be cohesive? most of that era or style is 15mm gameplay isn't it?
again, i don't know what your creative mind is churning over but if you want to throw some spitballs around i'm sure we'd all help creating something solid for ya!

Uhm...huh?
I'm just saying instead of releasing a head and torso set, I'll release a set of heads, torsos, arms, and legs; all centered around a common theme. For instance, in addition to the Imperial Torsos and Heads I just recently previewed, I would release matching arms and legs to go with them.

I will start writing my shopping list now then
I would be totally up for this, they will work for my Steam Punk projects as well will you include weapons and back packs as well
Also I want a decent looking Napoleonic style cavalry in this format, I think I have some pics of Napoleonic cavalry uniforms on my PC if you want any idea's.

Could you perhaps do some arms for the Colonial Defense torsos? I needs me some USCM themed Imperial Guard, problem is dealing with stupid GW arms.

Mad Robot, these heads look awesome! I just ordered a set of the colonial marine heads. Any chance you might make some more colonial marine heads with different expressions, Goggles, etc?
Also, on an earlier page there was an alternate autogun design. Are you going to release that?

All, I just received my order of Colonial Defense Heads and Spec Ops heads, I thought I'd share a side-by-side comparison for the benefit of the forums. Overall I like the look, the heads are definitely less bulky than the standard Cadian head. Please note that in order to fit the Colonial Defense heads, you have to shave off the neck protector on the standard Cadian torso to make the helmet fit right. I am strongly considering using these heads for my upcoming PDF project, though I think there are still a couple other heads vendors to look into.
Would be really awesome if there were more sculpts with this helmet. EDIT: Actually on closer inspection it looks like the DEVGRU heads are NOT the same helmet design as the Colonial Defense. Any chance of getting more than 5 sculpts of one helmet type? If I'm going to make 100+ infantry it would be great to have some more variety while maintaining a consistent look and feel.
Here is a comparison of all three heads:
Then just the Defense and Cadian heads from the front:

@Kolath: The CDF heads and parts have done quite well, perhaps an additional 5 heads would be warranted. Just 5 more faces with the helmets, or do you want a sgt head in there, maybe with a cigar...?
-Steve
25839
Post by: Kolath
Personally, just 5 more with the helmets. You could also attach some stuff to the helmets, like one with a flipped up night vision goggle attachment (exposing the face). Maybe one with the chin strap hanging open?
45264
Post by: mad robot
Probably be something more like this
A hanging strap can be a little problematic to cast but it's not impossible. This second set would probably be the helmets with the IR lens down and some more emotional expressions...fear, surprise, etc.

In terms of posing (e.g., leaning) -- how does it steer?
45264
Post by: mad robot
Not sure I understand the question. The control yoke turns on a vertical axis and shifts the front wheel to left or right to enable turning. That's basically how the RL treadbike worked.
Hope that helps.
-Steve
53630
Post by: deadairis
That's exactly what I needed, thanks -- sounds like there's enough flex in the tread that it turns on the front wheel?
Basically, I like to ensure at least one model in a bike squadron is doing a hard turn and firing one-handed at something. Puppetwars' bikes are easy for that, GW's are ... not easy. Seems like this should be easy enough, mostly just titling the model and getting the driver a good arm.
Thanks!
45264
Post by: mad robot
OK, I now I get it. Yep, one could also probably lean in and skid to some kind of firing pose where the bike is leaning over a bit.
Heck of a question, thanks!

As an aside: anyone considering buying the rather excellent torsos that Mad Robot creates should know that the Tannenburg Palace Guard arms from the equally excellent Victoria Minis are off scale slightly, with Vic's models being more 2nd ed IG in scale, and Mad Robot's being more in line with the current plastics. I got it to work, but it's a bit off.
I'd go with one line or the other, but I will say sculpting epaulets are easier than it seems.

Correct, after the basic legs will be Imperial Legs, carapace legs, even an update to the Sadoukadi Greatcoats as well.
What do people think about an arms/legs Kickstarter? I may consider one once I can get my first sets completed.

I think one of the biggest things missing from most lines is decent arms. I mean, every company puts out fifteen head varients and a hand full of torsos, but legs are fairly rare and arms are virtually nonexistant. I don't know all the ins and outs of the kickstarter world and how it effects businesses, but it's certainly something worth looking into, and I'm sure people are scrambling for arms that don't have shoulder pads the size of their helmets.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Everything is great Steve! I am certainly sure we could band together and kickstart anything you feel like doing! :-) I agree that legs in differing poses for squads would be brilliant as would a good choice of arms to give these guys some good character, not to mention those among us wish to use models for diorama's and the like!

As much as I am not a fan of Kickstarters (the general delay curse that seems to happen to all ) I would be tempted to join this one as the need and demand for arms sets and legs is a shortfall in the gaming world
However can I ask that you make some more relaxed posed arms and legs sets please, the reason I say this is because not all of us are gamers so the need for more diorama styled appendages would be much needed.
By this I mean at rest smoking drinking hands on hips even, maybe a leaning posed miniature would be great, I know this is a lot to ask but this could be a key factor to boosting interest.

And, for the love of everything, we don't need any more 'Disco' poses, or pointing index fingers, and so forth. We need open hands, simple closed fists, hands holding things, etc.
57963
Post by: Zogg
I would like to see arms holding pistol grips. Also handles to which we can attach axe heads, shovels, etc. And arms holding steering wheels.
45264
Post by: mad robot
Just hands or arms attached? Give me 5 specific hand poses and 5 "diorama style" arm poses, as LDD puts it.
