Yeah, I'd say those prices are resonalble.... Did you consider putting it up on ebay?

Ork - Scratch built and Converted models (and some Chaos) @ 2012/04/06 13:23:38

Post by: wazzoo2000

I'm close to doing it, but people who go on eBay including myself use it for the cheap ness of it, so even tho I feel I'm quite cheap, I don't think eBay buyer will pay what I want, plus eBay take 10%.

So I'm not sure about eBay yet, I get asked to do commissions about 2 times a month, funny thing is tho, 50% of the people asking are 10 to 16 years old and have no idea what cost and time goes in to these models, then when you say "£100 for that mate" not knowing there age, they never reply back lol

E-bay might work if you did a load of those buggies, that way yo could produce say 6 at a time and see how well they sell

I have bought a few conversions of ebay through my years, these days I would rather do it my self plus now a days I have the wallet contents of a 10 to 16 year old …… or as I said before a cheap bastard LOL

I think your best bet would be make a few models that you like to build, then show and tell them here with the interest to sell, that way it could be like market research.

I would like some of those buggies you did, but I think the price might be a bit high for me

Glad the little man is doing well and glad to here he is being railroaded into this craft, pushy parents you have to love them LOL

Post by: Meade

Put em up on Ebay but factor the 10% into the cost... it still may reach more customers. Obviously not the ones interested in cheapness, but who knows, somebody with a boatload of cash might want to build a huge cool-looking ork army

Here you go guys, a commission I'm doing for a friend i know here in the UK, this is my trukk mark II, i will have 3 basic shapes of trukks by the time i finish, trailer will be made soon, hope you all like.

and before you all ask, im not giving him mates rates, like i said, if i do it any cheaper, then i would almost be free hahahaha

Oh my god, that thing is going to e epic! My plasticard attempts are lousy in comparison, I guess I'll have to print out some pics of your work and spread them on my desk for inspiration....

I think you inspired me to build a scratch-trukk army!

Not sure on the look of this trailer yet or what guns to put on it.

Do I go weapon platform ??

Big guns ??

Lots of small ones again ?? (bair in mind I've done that already)

Oooo what do I do ??

I would go transportation for most of the trailer, then add some small side railings with panels ( your specialty ) then a gun section at the front of the trailer with two machine gun sponsons either side and a massive gun in the middle

This way you can transport that tank once converted Now how do you cut your circles and what tool do you use please

Fantastic work all the way through this thread. Thanks for sharing your awesomeness

Regarding Da Artik, can you fit your buggies on the back of it? You could do a Knight Rider style mobile Mek Workshop. Alternatively you could probably fit a battery of Orky Artillery on the back of the thing like a land-bound Spectre. It might even be usable in-game if you did that

Cheers for the feedback on that , well I have to say you do a dam good job using that system.

You can use a compass with a pin on both ends, then you just score it and then snap it and file, most plastic card is easy to score and snap.

Ok guys, WIP.

Doing a back ram plate thingy, so what ever it is, it looks kool and like its going to kick ass

The bits i've ringed, are just supports, the way i've made these one just make it stronger when i stick it to the back of the trailer, the bars move freely too, so it can move up and down, makes it easy for painting and looks good, like i new what i was doing with it. (i don't think it serves a purpose)

when i drilled the Deffkopta rotor blades i started in the number order, i drilled number 1's, all 5 at once, so the line was straight. i held them all together then drilled number 3, then last of all i drilled number 2, i always drill with my smallest drill and the build up to the drill bit the same size as the bars i'm using. Then one by one, starting in the middile, i glue them in place with a very small amount of glue. (dont forget to put a bracket in there if you want it to move up and down, DONT glue this.

then i stuck it on, making sure it moved right, nice movement up and down.

This pic is showing the bracket that i made to look like a piston that would push it up and down if it was real, i think it looks ok, but i would re-do it if i was to start again, but hell its ok for this one

I know its pricey, but I would use the trailer to transport some Kanz to the front. Have some grotz strapping and chaining some Kanz down for transport would look great. Besides, when it comes time to unload, all the driver has to do is slam on the breaks and cut the wheel hard! No fuss.

Sorry for the little threadjack, but I gotta share this here so the master of converting can have a look at it..... You work inspired me to get plasticard and start working with it. The rear part of this is my first plasticard attempt!

Also, remember when you commented on the unpainted version of this in the gallery a few months ago? That comment made me look at the models of its creator, and I loved them! I think I even told him to start a P&M blog LOL

Ok more WIP, hope you like

on this pic, you can see the guard rails on the side, it also show's the nice low profile i'm trying to keep, as i think it looks good, feel free to take this pick and photoshop what you think i should do and repost it, i still cant make my mind up. i am thinking tho of a tank turret at the front with a 360 turning circle, then 2 sets of dakkadakka's on the back, what do you guys think ???

this is the side rails again, i really do like these, im not going to put any more armour on them, like the last trukk n trailer.

the under belly, thought i would do some detail here, so put in some brake cables and on the other one, more armour plates, did this quick so its not great.

this one is just showing the air brake cable, one more to bang on yet.

Thanks wazzoo! Feel free to make one! I didn't think about it before, but it could make a pretty good Ork walker, too big for a Kan, too small for a Stompa, but I know there are in-between ones, I just can't think of them.

i really like this, i was ask to do a commission on some thing close to this, but i was going to use 2 stompa's and my basic shape, and make it like a airship, close to my one.

but this is what i would do with what you have, see the pic below.

always room for more Dakkadakka's.

Well, pretty close to my vision and like the idea of the dakkadakka port holes I will use that idea, I had the idea of a large cannon on the front platform , was going to use a FW one but decided to scratch build my one.

The only issue is the portholes will be in line with the tracks ( it has altered slightly since this photo ) which would not make sense so I have to alter the side section to accommodate these but I have a plan for that.

The back section is totally different to what you have envisioned, as a little bit of alteration has happened there as well, but I am hoping this will look good in the end.

Thanks for the input always good to get some one else's view and seems lIke I am on the right track

mmm, i think you have to add some support on the transporter, cause it can happend the truk can be separate from it (if not in the game, in real) to move freely.

tell me what you think, i'm still not sure about the base, but i love the lean it give the model, was trying to make it look like it was stepping into a trench.

Ork - Scratch built and Converted models (and some Chaos) @ 2012/05/09 20:40:20

Post by: tarar2d2

It's very lanky, but I think that it suits it. I also love the assault cannon. Maybe if you put a guardsman underneath it, cowering in horror, it might make it more believable that it is a trench. Other wise it looks awesome

I love it, but the legs need to be beefed up a bit. There's just too little structure there to believable support what's above. Some extra armor at the least to give it the impression of being more massive in the legs.

Well, if the Mek told them the legs would hold the body up, it would right?
But I like it all! The legs do look rickety, but I like it.

thanks guys for all your comments on this model, but i will say, the legs are staying, i think there fine, i might add some more armour plates on them, maybe, but not much, i love the look on this one. i got the model coz some one asked me to do a commission on one of these guys, so i wanted to see what i would come up with, to be honest, there is not much you can do with this model, it is how ever a good bits box model, lots of weapons and bits and bobs.

I know you have plenty of options for the face, but no actual head. The face is on the torso, wich annoyed me, so I built an actual head.....

anyway, I love that scratchbuilt gatling gun, mate! It rocks!

Yes, but don't you find that the face is on the torso as to keep in with the ork look and feel if you raise it above the torso it no longer has that much of an ork feel.

But thats just my opinion, looking at orks their head is lower than their shoulders.

not sure which bits you on about, but most of the time i use a sharp knife and roll the tube and put the knife of the tube and try to keep it as straight as i can, of use a razor saw from GW or any good hobby supplier

That's a spectacular build mate... and I don't think the paint job is bad at all (understatement). Odd base for a 40k figure, but if it's a display piece it doesn't matter.

should of said with the photo's, i re-did the base, as i wasn't happy with the one i did with it.

40k uses round bases. oval monster base is what that awesome dork knight would use. The base is bigger, and gets you in assults easier. But for display it is sexy. I love it and things it awesome even the big ass gun.

Well done, I like the fact that you've got the motor on the front for turning the ammo, and the firing pin at the back. Those details really make it stand out!!

I think the "rule of cool" will cover you on the base... but yes, there are actual rules about base use as variation from the norm can give figures certain advantages.

Looks fantastic Wazzoo! Everything looks great. If you planned on using it in a game, I hope you can find a solution to the base issue.

I just picked up one of the Ork Bommer kits as well. Actually, it was an early Father's Day present. I feel loved.

I also thought about some conversions. I thought of combining it with a couple of LandSpeeders to get two or three Bommers out of one Ork kit. We'll see. Use of Land Speeders as looted Bommers would fit with my DeffSkullz clan, but the base Ork kit is awesome too.

I hear good things about the Vallajeo Model Colour paint range. I've seen a rack filled with their paints and there's easily 2 times the colour variety, not to mention all the differnt paint types they have. Off the top of my head they carry clear paints for blood/water effects, as well as thinners and flow changers. All of the paint bottles also come with dropper tops, so you can control paint mixing and thinning drop-by-drop.

I like the paint job to look rough as if the orks them self have done it, I see paint jobs on dakkadakka all the time and there to perfect for my liking, and some people ever class a model as finished with out any dirt on it, now I don't get that, so if your like me a basic painter, then abit of mud and wash makes it look well kool

The touch-up is never ending, and then when I think I have it, I notice something else crooked

What glue do you use?

I'm scratchbuilding with 1/8" sintra and polystyrene card and using testors blue and GW superglue. Neither seems to work very well. I have greenstuff, but haven't filled with it yet (because I'm trying to make sure I have enough for other model conversions).

Just curious how you get it all to hold together and not worry about breakage.

Ork - Scratch built and Converted models (and some Chaos) @ 2012/06/27 13:48:30

Post by: dsteingass

If you are truly using styrene..testors blue or PLastic Weld will work, otherwise you need to use CA if it is some weird plastic.

GW superglue sucks..throw it away and get some good hobby CA, I'd recommend getting thin, gap-filling, and thick CA and some accellerator.

i dont use any GW stuff, chuck it all in the bin, they may well make good models, but thats where it stops. i use Milliput as all my filers, there are loads of different types, so you cant go wrong, i also use a supra gun i got from a model train shop, its like water, and very good. the plastic glue i use is again from the same place, i think its Hummbro liquid cement.

hope this helps

The voting thing is tough. I don't know how you loaded them but double-clicking on them does nothing, which is how one usually gets to the gallery to vote.

When you post a pic and use the URL link, don't put the {img} around it. This will let every one click on it.

it has to have image tags if you want the pictures to show up in the thread, otherwise it will only be a link.

if you just copy and paste the "FORUMS" link in the Gallery, you'll get a clickable, zoomable pic.

See, it is a mix of nested IMG and URl codes

Secret Weapon Washes are great, GW's new washes are premium, and if you've a hankering for the old GW inks, Didi's Magic Ink!

For washes you could look at the Les Bursley how to make washes in the tutorial section on DAKKA. Apparently they are fantastic washes, and easy/cheap to make.

I do find that they leave a way glossier finish than the old washes, which is annoying.

If you are getting a gloss finish from the new GW shades, you're not mixing them up right, or putting them on too thick or something. It takes multiple, light layers to do it right. Gloss coats are not always a bad thing though. Be not afraid, since you can always dull them down (and should always).
