A DKOK Commissar tank commander in his turret (counts-as Pask).
I doubt the hull will get done for a while, so I thought I would get a pic of the turret up to keep up momentum

Great work on the LotR stuff. I did a couple of those Barrow-Wights years ago, and then bought some more models to paint in the same manner that I never even started. I might have to search them out and get them done. Turret looks nice as well.

I have got a bit more done on my Knight Lancer!
The plates are done from the waist down - No decals applied yet, I will do them all at the end.

That is a very dynamic pose. Does the model not fall over? I look forward to seeing it all finished.

Not much painting done this month, but at least the last 3 Dunedain are done:
5 old-school Orks on the list next

I like those Dunedain. I bet they'd make a nifty Robin Hood-themed warband for SoBaH or Frostgrave, as well.

5 more old-school RT Orks:
The Nob and banner bearer were from a Kickstarter last year, the boyz are true RT figures. This finishes my second unit of 30 boyz!
Making my 2017 total now 18, a little bit behind where I'd hoped to be, but not a disaster

Those retro-modern boyz fit right in with the classics. I love the bright green skintones-- Goblin Green FTW!

The weather has finally been nice enough to get some spray varnish done, so I have been working on the basing backlog.
First up, my 2nd full warband of Uruk Hai:
Then the last 5 Orks I showed:
And the lascannon, shown here with 2 volunteer crewmen from my old Penal Legion, who are now acting as Veterans :
I have also finished 2 more Barrow Wights, they will be shown off once based. Plus I have a Leman Russ tank hull about half done, and 2 LOTR journey book foam hills underway, so lots to look forward to

I have also painted 2 more Barrow Wights, and based all 4:
And completed 2 hills in the style of the LOTR Journey books:
AND done the hull for my counts-as Pask tank:

Excellent. The finished bases really make the models feel cohesive. How do you get your static grass to stand up like that? Are you using pre-made tufts?
17796
Post by: Slinky

@Josh - The greener grass is just squashed onto PVA glue by hand, but the darker stuff that sticks up is pre-made, yes - Army Painter "Winter tufts" I think.

Vrasku and 3 Uruk Hai crossbows done:

Great stuff, Slinky - you're really tearing it up on the LotR front now, and the Russ looks very cool as well.

2 more LOTR Journey Book hills are complete:
I am currently working on the big hill from those books, which is cut down the middle so you can use it as one big hill or as 2 halves at the edges of the battlefields.
Also getting some more done on my Cerastus Knight Lancer, should get some further WIP photos of that up soon.
I spotted something on my shelf I have never shown off here - A cardboard Malcador Defender!
Unfortunately I can't claim responsibility for the base model, I got it on eBay a couple of years ago for about 15 pounds. Then I tarted it up with a hunt through my bits box, I think it looks pretty good
17796
Post by: Slinky
Are you sick of hills yet?
Here's the final installment - A large hill that is cut down the middle so it can be a single large hill, or 2 at the edges of the battlefield:
I've also made a lot more progress on my Cerastus Lancer:
Not much left to do on him now, just the banners, decals, base and gluing his arm on

Post by: Azazelx
Uruks never end, do they? Good thing is you're churning out some great looking finished models.
17796
Post by: Slinky
I have been working out how to adjust my Salamanders to be 8th-edition ready. The main thing I needed was more HQ choices, so I dug out Chaplain Xavier, who I bought when he came up on GW's "Made to Order".
I've also now got Sevrin Loth lined up to be my Librarian
85 models done in 2017 now...
Next up to be painted are 2 more mounted Nazgul, who are already underway.
17796
Post by: Slinky
The Nazgul painted up pretty quickly!
Next up are 3 more old-school Orks that will finish off 2 units, but I find painting them a bit of a chore for some reason :(
115
Post by: Azazelx
Ooh! Nice work on Xavier there. Have you got some more angles of him? The Nazgul look pretty cool as well. How many of the Nine do you have painted at this point?
17796
Post by: Slinky
Thanks, Az. No, I only got the one shot, I was aiming for the "golden angle" - Maybe I will aim to get more in future for models I am more proud of, like him. Also, I actually got my daylight bulb on him, which I think resulted in a better pic than my normal efforts...
Nazgul are going well - All 9 on foot are done, and 4 on horse now! I have just discovered that one of them still to be built is missing the lower half of a horse leg (the one that goes into the base :( ) so that will need some cunning GS work and a big bush to disguise it
17796
Post by: Slinky
The 3 Orks are done:

In the Journey Books scenario "The Flight to the Ford" you can play with either the book or film version.
I want to play the book version with Glorfindel - This means that Frodo starts on Asfaloth, while Glorfindel follows on foot.
So - I took an Arwen/Frodo model and chopped Arwen off!
I went with merging Frodo's cloak into what was left of Arwen's so it looks like a giant riding cloak - Hopefully it will look okay once painted

Great stuff, mate. I love the custom ferry, and the Arwen-ectomy is pretty cool as well. I don't think I'd be quite as dedicated for a single-scenario model as you have here, but I'm sure it'll also make for a very nice display model as well.
Death Corps guys look great. I've got a small number of them myself but too much on the go to even consider digging them out right now, but very cool to see yours up here. I really like the dirty-dusty combo of green and dark khaki that you've used as well. Very effective.

Oh, and do the other 2 sections, I suppose

Excellent job on my least favourite Tolkien character Goldberry lovely also, but is the lighting slightly overexposed on the cloth? Looks like it's very well toned but tricky to see exactly.

Probably, yes :( I took 3 pictures, and that was the best of a bad bunch...

The filler is supposed to be shaped into water-like patterns, then I've got a painting guide in the LOTR journey book that uses a variety of greens and blues, then streaks of white at the end. Hopefully it will end up looking okay

Cool, I’ve been watching so many YouTube videos to see how people are doing water effects. I’ll keep an eye on yours.

The ForgeWorld Amon Sul comes with a small stand-alone piece.
I have painted that up as a test for my planned colour scheme. I think it looks okay... Any suggestions for improvements?
I used the newish GW"Creeping Vines" and plan to add them sparingly to the rest of the terrain too.

Looks really nice. The only addition I'd recommend would be a bit of weathering powder to "natural" it up.

Sounds good - any specific brand/colour? And are they easy to apply - Not something I have tried before...
17796
Post by: Slinky
Today I have the first 5 Scions to show:
Not totally happy - I used the same colours as on my DKOK, and it just hasn't worked quite as well. Plus the spray varnish frosted horribly - It was most noticeable on the black of the guns, so I had to repaint over those. Might be getting to the time of year to leave everything until spring to be varnished?
Not bad, though. Next they will be getting their Taurox painted, then their 5 buddies.

Slinky wrote:Sounds good - any specific brand/colour? And are they easy to apply - Not something I have tried before...
Probably some black and brown. They're pretty much of a muchness - I've got some from Kromlech, Vallejo and MIG (and someone else) with slightly different colours. There are different ways to apply and fix them, including isopropyl, but I've been mixing them with matte varnish and a small amount of water. with good results. Youtube is a good resource for that sort of thing.
I'm at work atm so I can't easily link individual pics, but some scenery I've used them with slightly different effects are in these posts:

All of these terrain projects are from the LoTR journey books, right? I have The Two Towers and Return of the King, but not Fellowship, so I'm seeing all of these for the first time. You are really making me want to build even more terrain.

The 5 Stormtroopers/Scions, including officer:
This completes my planned Imperial Guard army! Though I do have a Shadowsword and a Malcador Defender to paint at some point, they are not in the current plan.
Next up, 3 more of my RT era Orks as I work to get that army completely 8th ready too.

I am working on getting my core armies "finished". There are only a few Orks to go, and 3 of them are now done:
Taking my 2018 score to 8
A Painboy with cyber-skull (luckily I had the right model, as the Index entry Painboy has to have a Power Klaw), a wild-looking Weirdboy and a generic chap who is now an honorary Nob with Big Choppa.
In 7th I had a unit of 3 Nobz to accompany my Warboss, so I had to scramble around to find 2 more models who could do duty as Nobz and round out the unit to the new minimum of 5.
Next up, I will be back on LOTR, converting/rebasing some Mierce Darklands human models into Dunlendings
17796
Post by: Slinky
Following the realisation that I was never going to play Darklands, I sold off quite a few of my models.
But I kept the ones I really liked, which includes the Duguth spearmen.
For LOTR I need some Dunlendings for the Two Towers scenarios, but the GW models are OOP and v expensive on eBay even for obvious recasts.
For the scenarios, I need a chieftain, a banner bearer, 6 with shield, 6 with bow and 6 with 2-handed axe. None with spears, so I took a look at the spearmen, thought "what the hell" and had a bash at converting them into axes. What do you think?
ORIGINALS:
CONVERSIONS:
The one at the back already had an axe from another Darklands figure as I had lost his spear hand somehow Note that I also rebased them onto 25mm rounds.
17796
Post by: Slinky
The Dunlending conversion/rebase job is done!
Command:
Hand weapons/Shields:
And the converted 2-hand axes:

I was thinking I could spray varnish and base these, then it snowed again all weekend... You can look forward to seeing them again, based, in a couple of weeks
That only leaves a Shokk Attack Gun left to paint for my Orks (oh, and the Dakkajet the mini Slinkies gave me for Christmas).
Next up, 4 Aragorns

As with many of these RT Orks, I love the models, but didn't enjoy painting them for some reason... But he was the last one, so never mind! I do have a Dakkajet still to paint to completely finish off my Orks, though.
Next up (soon) will be 2 Boromirs, including one who doesn't look very well...

My regular gaming opponent is a big fan of buying already-painted models, and has acquired a force of 30k Sons of Horus.
So, having agreed to put together a force to play 30k with him, and being the sort of fool who wants to paint all his own models, I now have to get cracking on that.
When I saw the model of Dorn I knew I wanted to play Imperial Fists, and their special detachment with lots of shields appeals as it will make it a bit more different from all my 40k marines.
So, I have stuck together my first 5 breachers:
And painted a Primaris (first marine I had to hand) as a colour test:
My aim is for quite a bright yellow, but heavily weathered. I think it's nearly there, need to work on the sponge weathering a bit to avoid getting such big splodges.
My 2018 count is now 33

Post by: Slinky
A bit more progress on my Knight Warden. Now the leg plates are done (except for transfers, which I plan to do all together at the end):

I was thinking these were RT Orks, of the same era as Ere we Go and Freebooterz, will have to check

Thus far there's just the "sand" that is part of the resin cast - I have added a few citadel vines, though, and will add some clumps of static grass at the end...

Thanks, Da Boss! There's not that much you can do with them really, but I am following the paint schemes from the old Journey books, and it is effective enough, and super quick!
I need 18 wargs for the scenarios, so some of my less complete scores from eBay have had to be put into action - Here are some where I have had to GS on the "humps" that cover where a rider would sit - One of them also needed a new leg

I got myself some transfer paper and printed these on a colour laser printer:
They worked quite well, but were more fragile than normal decals, and the yellow and white needed to be painted over by hand once the decal was on.

From the very large to the very small...
Painted a test Spitfire from the PSC Battle of Britain game. This is one of the original "soft" plastic ones with droopy wings - I have received my replacement "hard" plastic ones which are much much better, so I shall be painting those for use in the board game,
The roundels on the side are the stickers that came with the game, not happy with them as they didn't stick well and are too thick so I have ordered some decals to use instead on the actual game models.

Got another 3 Breachers up to the "nearly done" level - I will do the weathering/bases once all 10 are at this level:
I also did a test paint job on a base, I think it will do:

Thanks as always for popping in and taking a look
It's been a bit too hot recently to want to paint, but I have made some progress on some more LOTR terrain - A pool and wall for Moria:

Nice job with Weathertop, that's the Forgworld one right? Also, nice start on the Moria wall.
Also, killer paintwork on that knight....I've resisted buying the big 40k scale knights and titans, mostly because of the price and the amount of space they take up...but I will be getting my titan fix when Adeptus Titatnicus gets released next month!

Yes, it's the Forgeworld one, my wallet is still stinging from that purchase, but it is such a lovely chunk of resin.
AT looks great, we're going to be knee-deep in awesome Titan paintjobs soon, I'm sure

Love how Weathertop turned out. Nice carving on the wall, I'll be interested to see that painted. Always a fan of LOTR stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers, Cleatus. Your wish is granted, as it's all done!
The weather got a bit cooler, and I found I was able to be arsed to pick up a paintbrush. I have now finished the Moria wall and pool, and also 6 Watcher in the Water tentacles to go in the pool and try to drag hobbits to their doom!

I am v pleased with the Warden, took my 3 knights out for their first battle last week, and wiped the floor with my mate's Marines...

Not the most exciting paintjob, but it fits in with the rest of my Guard tanks...
My 2018 score is now 77

Thanks, old chap!
I got it for a steal on eBay, really nicely made from cardboard and such, with GW bits for the tracks and heavy bolters. Tarted it up with a rummage in my bits box, and I am v pleased with the final result!
Started on Legolas and Gimli now.

Review of the year 2018
Started well, but suffered a total loss of motivation in August and have got nothing painted since.
The previous years totals were:
2015: 81
2016: 102
2017: 152
This year, based again on my semi-random scoring system, I ended up with a score of 77. So a bit of a disappointment - However I still kept on gaming and reading Dakka, so it's just painting that suffered...
Here's the breakdown:
Imperial Guard
10 Scions
Malcador Defender
Imperial Knights
Carapace missile launcher
Knight Warden
Orks
Weirdboy
Painboy
5 Nobs
Warboss
Shokk Attack Gun
LOTR
14 Dunlending conversion rebases
Jetty for Buckleberry ferry
Gandalf!
Weathertop!
4 Aragorns
River ford
2 Boromirs
18 Wild Wargs
Wild Warg chieftain
Moria Wall
Moria Pool
6 Moria tentacles
Blood Angels
Dante
Battle of Britain game
1 test spitfire

Back from the dead, with the army of the dead...
Made a trip to Warhammer World with a couple of mates, and bought some Hexwraith Flame with a view to getting my Army of the Dead painted, and easing myself back into painting with a nice easy project.
I have 18 very nearly done, pics when they are finished.
Now I just need to find the King of the Dead model, somewhere in the loft

Thanks, guys
Glad to be back in the game, but I am going to try not to put so much pressure on myself, as I burnt out last time and that resulted in nearly a year of no painting at all (though I was still gaming throughout).
First models, 18 Army of the Dead, with a nice simple paintjob:
Taking my score for 2019 to 18
Next up, finishing off the RAF planes from my Battle of Britain board game.

A bit of finishing off:
12 1/300 planes from the Battle of Britain board game, just needed the roundels doing and a bit of tidying up. Sorry for the poor pic:
Taking me to a score of 30, not bad for a week

Ouch
Another productive few days...
I got the King of the Dead, a banner bearer and 3 Riders of the Dead done.
With the king I tried picking out his crown in gold before the wash to make him stand out - The end result is "okay".
And also managed to get the 7 Luftwaffe planes for BoB finished off - All those crosses were a bit of a pain
So my score for the year is now a flattering 42

Got some terrain underway:
Various foam shapes that will make up parts of the terrain for the Moria scenarios in the LOTR Journey books, plus Mantic walls.
The Mantic walls were a bit prone to bending, and didn't stand up all that well on their own, so I straightened them and glued onto plasticard bases.
I have run out of black spray paint for undercoating, so stalled on these for now.

Today's LOTR offering is Gimli, son of Gloin - With and without Elven Cloak:
Next up will be Legolas, to complete the Fellowship!

Do you have a cold?
No pics to show, but I got my Mantic walls sprayed black in between rain showers, so some quick drybrushing should get them done.
Legolas is also done bar the basing.

Post by: Slinky
Legolas is done!
And one final Gimli as well
Plus all the Mantic walls are finished:
2019's count is now a healthy 60!
I am now working on finishing off my HH Imperial Fist Breacher squad, and a couple of random bits of 40k terrain.

Some random terrain that has been hanging around waiting for paint for ages...
Vacuum-formed Dragons Teeth:
Walls made of left-over GW building bits:
Mantic battlezone ruins:
66 painted this year now. Heresy Imperial Fists are getting there, but are quite fiddly.

You may only be at 66 for the year (not a jab at all), but your quality on pieces puts me to shame.
Also your group shot of Legolas is great. Just reminded me of this

Not seen that before, it's awesome
Still slogging away at Imperial Fists, should have first 5 done soon.
Been sidetracked by also working on Balin's tomb scenery - Terrain is always tempting to work on as it doesn't take such concentration, just flail a big drybrush around

Post by: Slinky
Got the first 5 Breachers done:
Can't find the transfers to finish the others at the moment, they are in a box in the loft, so slight delay on those
Balin's tomb scenery nearly done, and started a few Moria Goblins too!

Cheers Bit nerve-wracking going over essentially finished figures adding the damaged parts...
Just 1 thing to show today, a sign-post that was mostly done along with the Mantic walls but got overlooked for basing:

Yeah I always chicken out on weathering as well. Good job on those guys though, I think yellow in particular always benefits from a bit of scuffing.

Thanks! Worth it in the end, I guess
Today I have the plastic Balin's Tomb scenery to show. Still working on the various foam bits to make the side walls, hope to have those done this week.
Taking my yearly tally to 84!
Also have the next 5 Heresy imperial fists very nearly done, and also 8 Moria goblins to invade the tomb above

Here to ruin the good time of anyone wanting to relax and enjoy the scenery are the first 8 Moria goblins!
I wasn't sure whether to give them grey bases or not - In the end I went with matching all the rest of my LOTR stuff, as the Fellowship they will be fighting are on brown anyway...

Post by: Slinky
I got the other 5 Breachers done!
At this rate I might be able to give my mate a game of 30k by 2021
My 2019 score is now 97, but I have now finished all the foam bits for Moria which will take me well over 100, pics to follow.
Next up, an Ork Dakkajet...

They look great .
The double axes are a symbol of one of the chapters in a Forgeworld space marine painting guide I have. I forget the names it (the chapter and the book old age ), I wonder if they are a Imperial Fist founding chapter . Would be cool even if accidental.
Oh and having a 30K army done anytime before 30K is an accomplishment
