Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/17 23:52:54

Post by: Mousemuffins

Ah, well two fans on a model this size would be very clumsy indeed.

Think of it like a hovercraft or fan boat. Antigravity drives provide the lift, the fans and thrusters provide maneuvering. Also, Wizards.

Screwed about with the colours and stuff. Now with measurements.

What about a Y shaped upper strut, leading to 2 SMALL ones . Photoshop it first maybe, but I think it will look much more balanced!

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 00:00:16

Post by: Mousemuffins

Visually it IS balanced. It just kinda screws with physical expectations.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 01:29:46

Post by: insaniak

Yeah, the side profile looks awesome... it's just when you see the fan assembly properly it starts to look all front-heavy.

I'm wondering if a longer tail would help balance it somewhat.

Otherwise, a longer body with the rotor assembly sitting on the roof could still look pretty cool.

But then it would just be a helicopter?

Fine.

Now incorporating silly fins.

Just makes the whole thing look heavy to me.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 04:46:05

Post by: HisDivineShadow

I like the added fins, but also the sheer absurdity of the single fan.

Its not like any of Geedubs flyers are realistic.

Sure, but a techy, scifi one.

As it is, though, while the individual parts are all awesome, it just doesn't look functional.

I like it without the little fins, but i guess i can leave them off. Depending on the price when posted (finally being in Australia pays off) I will probably get this for a second Talon for my DeathWatch Marines or as a Dark Angel Flier Proxie.
My army is full of kitbashes and count's as so it wouldnt be that out of place.

Okay, how's this.

Seems to add weight at the back without added bulk or changing the shape. Also a bit more interesting.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 05:59:25

Post by: Barzam

Hmm. I kind of liked the little fins on the back even if they were pointless. How would it look though with a slightly more elongated fuselage and longer wings?

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 06:23:55

Post by: Mousemuffins

Lengthening the fuselage would be a major re-design. Not going to do that.

of course, now it can do THIS:

I liked the little purposeless fins quite a bit.

I also like the big giant fan. If you guys want the Puppetswar flyer, you should just buy that (and I own one, it's nice). if you want a giant turbofan one, you should buy this instead (and I will when there is, I know you're tired of hearing this, US distribution).

Also, how did things work out with that clampy handle? That was a great idea though I think it might work out a lot better in laser cut acrylic. I know the edges of the MDF models I own will only take so much handling before they delaminate.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 10:05:34

Post by: Mousemuffins

I'll put the purposeless silly fins back in, but only because there's going to be lots of room on the sheet.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/18 11:14:03

Post by: RiTides

I actually really like the latest version . The prior one with the 2 fins is interesting- why not include them as optional pieces? I think they should be Smaller, though! Not going for "silly" .

Nice tweaks . I seriously may order this along with the heavy vehicle when both are in the store, and I definitely didn't feel that way at the start. Sweet!

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2013/10/19 00:58:28

And then there was cutting.

A few tweaks to do yet, but pretty happy. This is just a quickie test build to check for fit and stuff.

I thought the renders made it look a little stubby, but the final model looks great.

I think we've got a winner with this one. Making the fan rotate like that now makes it look like the fan (turbine?) propels the vehicle, rather than being the part that makes it fly (I think you did mention anti-grav engines earlier).

Yeah... wow. True. MDF/HDF is PROBABLY quite easy to set up if you have software and a good machine available.

Still... two days? That's stunning.

Righto.

I think I have the design finalized.

Added: optional searchlight/sensor pod for gun mount. Optional additional tail fin. plain and numbered options for ventral fins (2, 3, and 4, not shown).

Also, the fan assembly is a bit fiddly with all the angles and stuff, so I've supplied a Jig to make things easier, and a simple, one piece part for wusses and folks with all of the thumbs.

Should retail approx. $22.

I know you mentioned a jig, but could you show any more detail on how the rotor blades fit? I'm just curious if it'll be a good steady hands job, or finicky, damn near impossible job.

Like RiTidesmhas mentioned, and I'm sure you are tired of hearing, when this an the TRV heavies are out I'm placing an order. I'm chomping at them but for rhino replacements!!!

Here's a pic of the rotor assembly.

I found it surprisingly easy once the first two or three blades were in. You'd need to let them dry thoroughly in place and trim the protruding bits before fitting the top ring. Still, there's the single piece rotor for scaredy cats.

Okay, here's a list of some of things coming out over the next two to three weeks.

Elven sanctuary of souls.

Iron wyrm

Shield generator

VTOL Bulldog (previously known as the Zephyr Penguin)

Various Crates and forklift combo (including a new 'warehouse' building)

Painting handle.

after that, we have a really big launch. up to and including (and perhaps exceeding) 6' x 4'.

There's a few other randoms to squeeze in here and there, but these are the priority items.

One quick question, was this version of the truck ever made available? Spoilered below:

Mouse, I've been curious.

I live on the other side of the planet. So obviously I want to purchase enough to make the shipping worthwhile.

Buuuut, is there a point where the weight/shipping cost tips that balance and cost goes too high?

I'm not as worried about percentage of my order, just total cost. So likely I'll keep the order to maybe 2-3 items to first try out your products, and hopefully keep the total bill including shipping under $100.

Then if it's sweet, I'll certainly be back for more in the future or maybe a distribution solution will have been worked out by then.

I know how to use a laser cutter and do so daily for my work... just saying

I just got an order that included "Sci-fi building widgets" - and wanted to let you know, the instructions for the widgets don't match what parts you actually get with the kit. The instructions also say "Observation Blimp".

Notably, the picture shows two large circle vents, but the kit only includes one. Instead of the second, there appear to be some belt-driven fans, some sort of a platform (I couldn't figure this one out at all), and some control pads.

The worm will take a couple of weeks, as the instructions are proving a little complex, but a sheet of just crates is in the works.

Okay, just prodding because I cannot wait to order several of it . You'd mentioned 2-3 weeks on Oct 22nd, so was just checking . Keep on cracking, I want to give you money!

And a sheet of just crates would be VERY handy, to get my crate to forklift ratio in line! So can't wait to have that available to order, too, as it'd go great with the current forklift/crate combo. Hopefully at the same time as the worm so I can order all of it

It's a nice model, but someone needs to lock up your modelling PC and keep you chained to the one that you make the instructions for the kits you've already modelled on, so that you can sell them .

We have 2 Australian mods on this site, and generally love everything about Aus here

Except the spiders. And the snakes. And... everything else that might kill you by looking at you funny

Back on topic, let us know when the new items are for sale, Mousemuffins! Hopefully soon

I'd love GW to be well managed and growing, the WD worth reading, Mantic to be a good alternative and a world of good discounts every second day. But alas, that's not how it is

Just to get some people envious:

My office is sending me to Australia in Jan (from North America)

What I would like to know is what's planned to be available by that time (the new projects).

I need to keep some cash for post Christmas shopping. :-)

Space elf sanctuary of souls should be out within the week as well. Working real hard to get a bunch of things out in the shortness of time.

Also, I may have done a thing.

...and with some colour.....

To replace out existing troop lander, which unfortunately doesn't translate well to laser from the old routing style. Probably available two versions. Cheap and cheerful (mid twenties) without interior, designed to be completed with the doors closed, and a second kit with all the inside bits, for mid thirties.

Me either. I keep checking the site every hour or two, hoping to see the new listings. Then I look at the calendar, and think "geez, its Sunday, give them a break."

Then I go back to checking the site to see if the new listings are up.

CNC Miniaure Scenery has entered the digital communications era with our very own Facebook page!

https://www.facebook.com/miniaturescenery

In other news, further work is being done on converting old favorites over to laser cutting (from routing).

Shown in pic are Sand Huts, Church and Imperial Ruins. The additional Sand Hut spikes will be sold separately as 'widgets'.

Generator and new Elven tree set-up coming soon.

(People on our facebook group feel free to skip this update, you've seen these pics)

To show off some of the terrain we make, we provided two tables for use at Arc40k over the weekend of Feb 1st & 2nd (a local tourney for ~150 people).

Painted by Mousemuffins (I put stuff together and undercoated it!) it does look awesome and adds a bit more variety to all the ruined imperial worlds out there. Aaaannnddd sitting next to it is our Sci-Fi buildings representing a ruined Imperial world.

NOTE: I should add that the board itself is the concept Mousemuffins made around the same time as the Elven stuff was first released. However, the 2ftx2ft squares are just too impractical for our postal based business to sell and so the board needs to be converted to our new 1ftx1ft tiles. Stay tuned for updates on those.

When I received my shipment, it struck me even more that it would be really easy for CNC Workshop to partner with someone abroad. Their instructions are all online, the designs are all seemingly cut from the same size of cutting area / stock piece, and they were just wrapped and shipped in basically an envelope.

I am glad I got these kits, but the turnaround time in getting the order shipped out (I know the holidays contributed to this) and of course shipping cost / shipping time to ROW are all things working against CNC Workshop.

With all the laser cutter kickstarters going on these days, I have to think that someone would love to partner with them and license their designs to print / split the profits. I know this has been mentioned before, but receiving my package drove home just how good of an arrangement that would be for everyone involved, if they ever decide to go for it.

Licencing simply doesn't have enough money in it. While it would reduce the postage, it also adds another middleman and all that ends up happening is nobody gets enough out of it in the end. We run on pretty tight margins as it is.

The good news, (for some) is it looks like we will be doing a deal for european distributorship. But first we need to wait for our new machine to arrive.

Unfortunately the bulldog didn't make it :(

Instead, how about a Zephyr Penguin? (available now)

We went with the Zephyr Penguin name because this thing looks like a flightless bird (and it's a nice parody of another companies tendency to name aircraft "[noun]+[bird]")

The Zephyr Penguin uses both Anti-Grav technology and standard aerodynamic lift to create a unique and very agile fighter aircraft. During the design phase, many said it would never fly and called it a Penguin. A name it proudly carries to this day.

Kit comes with:

Two flying stands (short and long)
- 60mm Round
- 120mm Oval

Two nose options
- Automatic Cannon
- Radar Array

Oooh, tempting. Within the next few months I'll be deciding what I want to use as a flyer... was either going to be the Dark Angels "dark talon" converted a bit, or this.

Really glad that it is available, regardless of the name

So, I actually LOVE that mech.

My one question on it is what looks to be the hanging chains under the missile pods. I'm not sure what those are there for, or if I just am seeing them wrong. But looking at the model they seem slightly out of place. Would they be optional or part of the structure?

They are to protect the waist from incoming fire. Israeli tanks have them. Yes, they could be left off, and doing so will allow the turret to rotate far more freely too.

The Cargo pod/ troop carrier will be removable, and I'll probably muck about a bit further with some sort of undercarriage.

And no, I haven't got a release date yet.

*Vague musing*
Would it be possible to produce these at 15mm or 6mm scale by slightly simplifying the design and using thinner sheets of wood? Just a thought that might expand the market.

next few weeks I hope. We are working on a few new releases, and have just about cleared a rather large backlog of orders, and updating older, routed product to laser. Also, we have a new laser inbound which will triple our out put, and allow us to start adding some serious amount of new product.

Also, This:

Will come with three chassis and three each of two different weapons. Also our first foray into to proving parts cut from 1mm card.

approx. $48, out VERY shortly. stay tuned.

I ordered 4 items that came to about ÂŁ100, shipping was about ÂŁ14. Pretty reasonable considering the distance, and well worth it, the building and other bits I bought are really well thought out and produced. Also as it's flat packed the vast majority of killer Aussie critters can't sneak inside. Though there's probably some fatally poisonous spider thing evolving to live inside MDF sci-fi terrain packs at this very moment

Will definitely buy again from CNC.

I'd say that CNC's stuff is rough-cut from pure awesome, but there's nothing rough about their cutting...

I'm actually really starting to wonder about that possibility. We lasercut plastic sheets for work all the time. Seeing some of these awesome creations without the annoying woodgrain on the lasercut edges would be fantastic, and would instantly get me to buy more.

The laser cutting machines can and do cut plastic but it would be more expensive for the material

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=22883&catid=715
1/4" Polystyrene runs $45 a sheet that are 40" X 72"

http://www.woodworkerssource.com/10663740.html
sells MDF at $18.99 for a 4' X 8' sheet

Well, if it's the same for the kit/company, they could be able to offer both variants at different prices? For converting/painting there is a big difference in ease of use between the two. If you want to build something as is, like I would the new droppods, MDF would be fine. But any orc buggies I would want to be able to swap weapons and bits from plastic kits, which would be a lot easier with plastic sheet material.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2014/06/23 20:28:01

Post by: ChaoticMind

Actually at a 1/4 inch styrene is just a much pain as the MDF from what I've played around with. A jewelers saw is the only thing that will give cleanish larger cuts on both. Knives and files work for notching both but any major cutting on realy thick styrene is harder because it must be done by hand while a scroll saw will cut MDF without a problem and leave behind an edge just shy of a traditional CNC machine.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2014/06/23 22:34:13

Post by: Mousemuffins

The trouble with cutting HIPS (high impact styrene, the stuff they make plastic kits from) is the edges do not cut cleanly, rather all all bendy and melty. No good at all for tiny models.

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2014/06/24 03:34:52

Post by: RiTides

Yeah, that's why I mentioned I'll be looking into it, as I'm very curious now. We usually cut acrylic sheet at work to make various jigs out of... we've tried various other plastics but the results vary a lot as far as how easily it cuts and how smooth the edges look.

The edges of the acrylic sheets look great, but I'm not sure that it's very suitable for this application.

This was my first time working with this material, and I have to say Im a fan. There are way less burrs than plastic mold connections and no mold lines. Burs I can deal with, little scraping, little sand paper. Mold lines drive me crazy, as one half of the models always seems to end up considerably higher than the other. So frustrating to deal with.

Granted, Ive only just started assembling the sand huts, but I suspect the buggies (which I will probably start in on tomorrow) will be much the same.

That's a large board! Must be quite a bit of assembly required, too...

Man, that terrain looks amazing! I'd love to see some hybrid between CNC and 3d printed stuff one day!

Yeah, me too!

I tremble at the cost - as well as the assembly and painting time...

But I still want it!

Ooh, yeah, those are excellent. I'm especially interested in those floor panels. I was just trying to design some panels just like these, to add height variations to table layouts.

Please tell me that you will be offering accessories and buildings from the board separately. I know if I could build the board up slowly I'd actually be interested. The amount of building, painting, etc at one time that board is realy daunting and I personally find it easier to deal with small piles. I've had single large projects sit for months in favor of 20 times the amount of work spread between multiple smaller projects just because the big one is too daunting to me.

Yes, all of the elements will be available separately.

Another question: will all of those buildings have useable interiors?

Miniature Scenery: Updates - RIP Craig Clark @ 2014/08/29 02:22:21

The interiors as designed are not usable.

However: There are plans to add usable interiors at a later date and higher price point.

Are there still plans for the troop lander mark 2 without an interior?
The "city" looks amazing!

Very nice. I'd love if you could release your concept art for projects so we could see into your excellent mind for designs.

Love this new cityscape. I have your original designed cityscape your planning on discontinuing and it's fantastic. hope this new one is compatible or at least can be made compatible. I imagine the raised sections could be used with the older design fairly easily, along with the free standing elements.

MM I'm curious when you expect this to be available for sale and what the price point is? Also the shrubs look like fun I'm curious how they will turn out. I imagine they will need to be textured a bit more perhaps covered in flock anyway I love the splash of plants in the design.

Is each ground "tile" a box? And you're stacking them to create the raised "tiles"?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly whats going on, which is great you can now have stairways going down and that underground parking garage entrance. I wonder if there will be a smooth gradation from one level to the next? sort of like the stairs tile but with an incline for the roads

Also a underground train/subway system would be neat. stairs going down to a walkway with train tracks going into the walls of the supporting tiles

Or a under construction tile. sort of an archaeological dig in the center of the city

or make the whole city a port city with docks and a water line, a water line that is actually below the street level.

price point hasn't been set yet. but whatever that turns out to be, our new discounting system will help out.

We hope to have the first items of the New Paranoia set available in a week or so.

and the stacking is pretty much as you say. There are endless possibilities.

I looked to order a load of the Battlegrounds stuff from you in the past, enought to do a 8x8ft board. Unfortunately the P&P costs to the UK killed the order.

I'd love to order your stuff, but its the P&P and then the UK import Fees which together can easily double the cost of the intial order. Figure out a way to resolve this and I'm in!

Maybe you could find a UK distributor at least that would help with cutting down on the P&P, I really want the boat as it looks pretty dam amazing and the Ork buggies however I am a little concerned as to the P&P cost

Any idea how much it would be ?

I need that boat in my life. I mostly play skirmish games, Deadzone being the current favourite. Just not sure how I would incorporate that boat? Maybe a Harbour location?

Their website has a dandy price guide and shipping info.

How you expect an Australian company to affect British import tax law, I have no idea.

Considering the fact that the stuff is being mailed from literally the other side of the world from most of us, the shipping I've seen on the orders I've almost placed are reasonable if not down right cheap. I've only not ordered because I want the TRV heavies too. :(
