Yeah these are very cool. Warstore use to stock these. Looks like no one in the US stocks this stuff currently. Too bad these are really nice, I think the sci-fi stuff has a lot more character than the MAS stuff. Then there is the stuff from the Dystopia guys on its way out soon to, spoiled for choice I guess.

Wow. Even looking closely enough to see HOW those are made from CNC cut MDF sheets, it's still a little mind blowing to think that they are. The Humpty is really stellar, and would look fantastic in an industrial/frontier setting.

Yes. All MDF. except for the wee 'DOG' badge. Which I added from a bit of card.

Also, coming soon (a couple of weeks. I need to make some alterations to the stand...)

Rather than mess around with shipping product to Europe have you thought about entering Into a licensing deal with Warmill? They could produce and fulfil your orders for the EU or produce and sell though their own website. It would cut shipping and increase your potential customer base. Just a thought anyways.

Yeah, Just shot an e-mail off to Neal at the Warstore to inquire about him bringing this stuff back in stock, he said at this time the shipping to get this stuff just puts it out of reach. Which sucks, but I get it. Maybe they can work something out to off set the shipping, who knows.Really nice stuff from these guys from the beginning so I will keep my eye out, or just have to save enough money up and do a big order so i only have to pay the shipping once.

Post by: Bolognesus

from what I remember, it's really quite bad. Most of the scenery hits "well I might just add another ten or twenty percent and get full-on superdetailed resin buildings" territory from what I recall... Not their fault though, mailing this stuff just is expensive.

It's really about time some of the MDF kits producers from different continents get together and start cutting/selling each others' kits - this stuff is all either 3mm or 5mm board and most lasers should be able to handle any of those kits with ease. I don't think there's many of them using exceptionally large boards (that could be an issue, with cutting space limitations on specific cutters) either so basically I'll just wait for the first outfits that wise up and collaborate like that to buy about a table full of stuff

I remember it being horrifying when I was looking at their tiles, haven't looked lately though.

Well, just to see, I threw some stuff I would want into a shopping cart:
2.93kg, about $200, plus another $40 for DHL shipping to the US. The same order in GBP came to £18.83 shipping to the UK. Huh, that's cheaper than to the US.

Yeah, I'm actually a little surprised by that. The last 2kg parcel I shipped overseas cost me around AU$75.

I can't help but think there has to be something lighter than MDF that could be used for this sort of stuff. Foam core would possibly work, but wouldn't look as good for the finished product. There would no doubt be all sorts of plastic sheeting that would be lighter, but probably more expensive than MDF...

easiest method would be to cut some card shapes and simply glue them on. The trouble with trying to enclose the cab with MDF is you end up with a lot of unavoidable ugly spaces and gaps, which is why I went with the open frame look.

Not usually a fan of MDF stuff, but this looks pretty good.

Presuming weight is what's boosting the international postage costs, there's probably not much the manufacturer can do, they're at the mercy of their country's post office rates :(

Absolutely, some companies do free shipping on orders over X or Half price shipping on all orders to Y country , that sort of thing. At this point unless UK and USA distribution can be had that's the best option we have. let us know how that shakes out.

That sounds like a good start.

I often buy small kits from companies like CNC to sample the kits quality before backing this up with a full order. Anyway of addressing this would be ideal, though if your proposed solution was at the right limit this might not be a problem.

Miniature Scenery : 11% off sale! and stuff. @ 2013/07/08 15:16:34

Post by: Captain Vyper

Thanks Mouse, this is just the sort of thing that shows the company is willing to at least look at helping people get their product, which is great.

Notprop- everyone has to be their own judge, but I can tell you I own several different kits from CNC. The troop landers, the workstation combo ( which I use daily and have for quite a while now I love it ) I also own 9 of the sand buildings and have "built" and painted the city and urban combo back for a friend. This stuff is sturdy, well designed and looks great on the table. Which Is why I am so keen to get hold of more. That's my little plug for them Hope it helps

Absolutely. When I'm buying from overseas, whether it's FW, or you guys, or what have you, I save up to do larger orders. I've already got a buttload of your city tiles, and bunkers, and landers, so I know and am confident of the quality enough to buy in larger quantities.

Very slick. I have to agree this is CNC and Laser cutting pushed to an excellent extreme. By far some of the nicest kits I've seen. It's all about wrapping your brain around the layers and how they'll stack up and link together. Take the time to work it out and great thing can happen.

What I wouldn't give to get my hands on this kind of equipment. The things I could do!

I absolutely love the stuff, but I always face the same problem when ordering from companies outside the EU... whenever the total amount including shipping I get hit with a other 25 € flat fee for them to bother charging me an other 21% (import charges) of the total invoice amount,

so for the Master workstation combo for example I end up paying just over 300€ with the import fee and taxes added for a kit that would be under 230€ without them. I simply can't justify the extra 70€+ for ordering outside the EU.

Anyway, keep up the great work (and good luck in working out a agreement with a EU based company)

Pretty cool, but I think there should be an option to add walls to the tower to use as an observation platform. I think the best thing about that kit is how it looks when assembled into the compound - looks snazzy. Perhaps create a removable wall section so the tower can sit in as part of the wall as well?

The modulators look pretty cool. If you could get a very thin (<1mm?) set of wood (possibly even a stiff paper at that point) to laser cut decals for some of these kits (especially the advanced space robot kits), or even tread/brick/etc patterns etc so people can use them to create patterned flooring/walls on top of their own kits/builds, then you would be another step ahead of the competition. It is something I have suggested to a number of companies/people who have posted these kinds of kits on Dakka but I have yet to see it happen.

Woot. it's alive!

Not too bad with a bit of the aforementioned judicious sanding. Which is VERY easy to do with MDF.

Walls are 26mm tall (or 1.0236220472", because I love the irony of expressing imperial measurements as decimals and I'm feeling a bit pedantic this morning).

I have a brand new cutting mat. and an inability to take pictures in focus.

Also; We've come to a desicion about overseas postage and wotnot, but we cant implement it for a few weeks yet as we need to update our manufacturing software so we can easily cope with larger orders. Bare with us. It's happening.

I was going to post that I love the sci-fi walls and container (looks like an ore shipper), but I have had to reserve the word "love" just for the worm

Excellent sculpt - will be interesting to see how easy it is to put together (and how much swearium is required ).

The TRV is a little bit bat Mobile, a little bit Aliens APC, a spot of Bladerunner spinner, a vague wave of Lamborghini, and a measure of Lancer.

A few more iterations:

Increased the size and changed the shape of the side doors, Hatches a tiny bit bigger, belt feed thingy on the side of the weapon system.

Love the model! Very nice, indeed!

Any chance, though, that the turret on the top is scaled to fit with existing models from another company? I'd love to put, for example, a Puppets War turret on one of those...

I seriously frakking want this TRV. More and more every time I load the pics. Test print and put it on your store. Now.

How does MDF take paint? Is there a noticeable texture difference, or does a good primer and paint fix all?

Post by: Mousemuffins

A good prime and it's good to go. The cut edges can be very absorbent, a quick wipe of PVA fixes this if it's a problem.

This model will need a tiny bit of filing/sanding to acheive the angles around the top edges, (see picture) but there is a clear engraved line to help with this.

I'll be doing a test cut this evening.

The turret parts are really just taking up space on the sheet, and wouldn't reduce the cost enough to make a serious difference.

TEST CUT!!!!

It's 2:30 am, but I'm pleased to say it's all worked out rather nicely. $20 each for the police and Hex version, $18 for the unmarked. They will also be available in value packs of (probably) 4 models, saving a couple of dollars off each. I guess three or four weeks before they are on sale.

Ah, I had been wondering how that was going to work. It would have raised all sorts of interesting possibilities for MDF kits if you had figured out how to do bevelled edges...

Still, it's a wonderful looking kit.

Looks like with possibly a slight reduction to the wheel size, it wouldn't be too hard to convert a tracked version...

The only thing that I might adjust about the hexes is to give them a bit more variation - at the moment it looks like there are a couple of sizes on different panels, but each panel has a set hex size.

I would go for a slightly more irregular sizing and spacing of hexagons over each panel - it would help, IMO, the slightly odd look of different sized hex patterns on different pieces.

I tried googling for what I meant but I am at work and my google-fu is also weak

I am thinking small clusters of 2-5 hexes including a larger hex overlaid and abutting several smaller hexes - if that makes sense.

I think that would result in too many hexes. This is after all, armor. There is no reason it wouldn't be a universal size, for ease of maintenance and repair. Assuming of course, you view them as plates. If the hexes are visual/paint aesthetic, gloves are off.

Also, why is it so hard to do an angle cut? Even with a laser...it seems like someone would have made a mount that can rotate a bit and cut angles. If it exists and is simply a whole different magnitude off machine cost I can understand, but someone earlier almost acted like it was magic.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
To that end, couldn't you also queue up multiple stacked passes of laser cuts at progressively deeper burns? Since it can engrave and cut, there is obviously output control. I'm sure it would dramatically increase time, I don't see how its not possible, mechanically.

Well, the part of the machine that projects the laser for cutting is not the laser itself, but a mirrored focusing thingy. To change the angle would also mean moving the mirrors and a fairly complex series of adjustments. So yes, it COULD be done, but it's just not worth it.

Ah ha. Now that's perfectly understandable.

I've watched a giant laser cutter at the metal Fab place I work at currently. It always seemed like it was the emitter itself right there at the point of cut. I could be wrong of course.

Anyhoo, any idea on the bundle cost yet? The painted police version really made my lust for this even worse, and I don't even want the police version. I'll want a bundle as soon as you put them up. Go ahead and set me a stack aside.

Warstore Did carry them a while back, I contacted CNC about a US distributor, they responded that they were looking if I had any ideas. I contacted Neal about it and a short time later Warstore had the CNC products in stock! I bought quite a few of their product right away. Its just great stuff. Then about a year later IIRC they were no longer stocking the line.

I recently contacted Neal again as to why he no longer carried the line and was told it mostly had to do with the high shipping costs. May be they can revisit this in the future who knows. But I will keep my eye on that development.

We are working hard on a better deal to alleviate postage costs.

Distributorships are probably not the answer. Mostly because whomever is doing said distributing still needs to pay for the shipping, and make a profit.

Franchising is also difficult because in the end profit becomes almost non existent. We want money, the franchiser wants money, etc etc.

The best method in the end will be to simply make postage discounted/ free over a certain amount ordered.

We don't don't know what these amounts will be yet. We have to update our manufacturing process before we can properly implement the postage subsidy.

please bare with us.

In the meantime:

Now with glowy wheels and stuff.

Next up: Military version. I'm thinking a nice desert yellow. or is that dessert. I can never remember that one. Meh. both can be yellow.

I assume by franchising you mean licensing your designs to laser cutters in other countries?

Either way, I placed an order in July and shipping to the US was high, but not a deal breaker ($20 US).

If it wouldn't just melt it, that would seem like an easy way to produce a similar product that would have lower shipping costs.

I think they'd still prefer to get a couple dollars per instead of nothing. With shipping killing a lot of orders, I'd rather hive some money to an associate than just be completely out of the works.

I used to work for a laser etching (glass & crystal, not wood/mdf) company and we had outsourcing contracts in the US, the UK and Australia. It was cheaper to outsource the project and send the digital files over than it was to etch the item here and ship it across the world. But glass and crystal does require a lot of packaging to keep it safe, so the economics of shipping sheets of mdf might not be the same.

Unfortunately money is tight, also I'd like to see how it looks in hand, and try out the build before buying lots of them. So I old buy one initially and the shipping is almost the same cost as the model. It also would put a counts as model at the same price (close to) as the GW equivalent, more so since I'd buy it from a discounter. It just wouldn't make sense.

Best option would be for them to get a partner here in the U.S. and one in Europe, they can share files and produce together. Even if its him paying one of the other companies to produce and distribute it would be cheaper than the shipping.

I can't believe this is MDF! You are amazing!!

Will the worm be available soon? One small suggestion on it- if the two spinning gears on the same axle weren't the same size, it might look cooler. Ie two small ones outside one large one, rather than two small ones outside two identical large ones.

I have access to a laser cutter, but it's not the tool, it's the designer! Again amazing work

Unfortunately, this is not the best option. It effectively adds an additional middleman, and dilutes profits further on an already marginal product. There will be a discounted postage option shortly, we are working on it.

The really silly thing is one of perception. For example, if we were to simply give a rolling discount, you know, spend $100 and get 10% off, $200 and 20% off, etc, but keep the postage the same, this has the effect of making postage seem even more expensive in comparison to amount spent. If we instead discount the postage by a comparable amount and keep the product cost the same, you save the same amount of $, but the end result is more pleasing. Go figure.

Anhoo, WORKING ON IT.

If the product is marginal, isn't it then maybe an idea (and more importantly: a possibility?) to try to broaden up your target audience?

I know a few CNC and laser cutter companies here in Rotterdam. It might dilute the profits somewhat, but if you have a broader market (and thus sell a lot more), your profits could go up, right?

If you've ever done international outsourcing to a laser etcher, you'd know there are ways to make it work. The goal is not to get it cheaper than it can be for someone living right next to the manufacturer. The goal is to reduce barriers to purchasing while maintaining your margins.

Here is an idea - raise the price and say it includes free shipping.
That should shut those wrong hemispherians up.

And if it pushes the price up into levels that people are no longer interested, they'll shut up. And go away and buy something else.

Just imagine the complaining we would hear if they had to pay what we do for things that don't even need shipping, like digital files!

We do. Not as bad as Australia, but there's still quite a bit of "screw Canada" pricing going on. the EU also has different pricing. The ability to do this was the point of regionalization going back to the early DVD days. If you are a regular purchaser of online content, you may want to consider a VPN service so you can change the nationality of your IP address.

It almost feels weird to say this, but can you please stop making so much awesome stuff? At some point I will want to place my order, and I don't want to have to order again a week later after you make more awesome stuff. And again a week after that.

But, loving the latest look on that heavy. Given the limitations of working with MDF, I suspect a long cannon barrel is not possible (I'm guessing the minigun barrels in the picture would actually be plastic rod on the final model). But, how about a railgun style of weapon? That could be easily made with flat surfaces.

I like the extra wheels from three design/engineering standpoints: extra traction up front for off-road work, better weight distribution to prevent sinking into soft ground, and extra weight to prevent inadvertent wheelies when you put the accelerator to the floor.

The guns are going to need more space for ammo hoppers, though...

An excellent and very thorough review, Thankyou!

I'll admit that our finnese is not as great as many of the other manufacturers, this is mostly because we are using an industrial cutter rather than an engraving machine. We have recently done significant work to increase the straightness of the cuts, like reducing the size of drive cogs which effectively makes the motor steps smaller.

We are also about to start building a new machine with all of this in mind.

Design wise, I'm aware of the limitations we have and actually try to avoid as much really fine engraving as possible, and let the shapes speak for themselves. Anyone can build a box and cover it in glitter, the trick is to make the box interesting before hand. Also, I find the heavier engraving adds more to shape and presence to the model, but admitedly would also quite like to able to finer stuff.

Oh. The tires. You mentioned that there were some parts of the tires that weren't cut all the way through. I think we've now fixed that. (it seemed to be a problem endemic with the rapid direction changes involved. we lowered the feed rate on particularly wiggly bits).

I hope I didn't come off as too harsh, I really like the innovative designs you've developed. Is there any way to scale down the HuMPT1? If you could get it down maybe 15% to 20% it would fit in much better with most figures and it doesn't look like the parts would be much more fragile than they are now.

Hmm. I wish it were as simple as just reducing the file size, but because the thickness of the material dosn't change, nothing would fit anymore, and the proportions of some parts would change rather radically (the step/tank/piston thingys would become visually much longer, for example). It would pretty much a complete redesign.

It's annoying that we are unable to get a thinner material.

I think that just gives you a porous texture to the resin so that it accepts stains and the like. the woodgrain I think is in the original and just reproduced by the mold.

Well, all I have to do now is break it all up and flatten out all the pieces.

Added some extra clockworky stuff for added steampunkiness.

Buy one and make it airsoft. It wouldn't be so hard to refit an existing pistol into it.

You can't see it from the pictures but it does have oversized details in the cab. You could fit two of the catachan sentinel driver figures in the seat and the joysticks and control panels are spaced far apart as well.

Old crow is still in production, you just have to send them an email. They are only casting by request now. By the detail in the cab, the HuMPT1 is closer to a figure 40-45mm tall. The Haloclix figure is 34mm tall and is still dwarfed by it. Again, if your picky about scale it's an issue, if your not picky, it will fit in just fine. For me it will work for bigger figures, but it would look absurd with 40K. A Rhino could get full cover behind it.

Love this one

Also, is this upgraded version of the Hunpt1 available?

I only saw the regular Hunpt1 without the container on the back on the website, and I think this upgraded version looks a lot better. I can see myself ordering it, a forklift and some crates (is there a package deal on that?), and a heavy support vehicle for some sweet, sweet Infinity pieces.

I can get a bottle of Australian wine for under $5, and I imagine they're paying for the wine, the bottle, and the shipping, and still making a little profit at that price. :(

Order a container of CNC stuff and watch the postage per unit price go down

Just went through this thread again with fresh eyes. The Borderlands stuff is great, the water tank and shipping containers are great, and the sci-fi walls are great as well.

Maybe a request to make sci-fi walls, in a variety of lengths? 3 in, 4in, 5in, etc, all the way up to 12 inches long or whatever. It would help those of us who make hirst arts terrain.

Also, maybe pre-cut panels with "lines" and rivets etched in, like the armor plates of the worm-digger-thing, made out of very thin MDF? For the same reason, we can add them to terrain pieces.

 insaniak wrote:

Why not make two versions of the kit? One that's multi-pose, and one that's easy to assemble? I like the snap-fit models that come in the GW starter games, but I also like the muilti-pose versions, as well.

 Mousemuffins wrote:

How much would it cost to buy an engraver, or get the detail offerred by Sarissa Precision, or other companies. A lot of is might be willing to help you foot the bill for a new machine, or upgrade, if you cut us in on some models. Maybe a kickstarter?

If we could get this, but with a more sci-fi / Infinity look, that would be great. I also saw your pipe set made from toilet tubes, and it looks great too. Maybe more industrial stuff, or the same set, but with an industrial look as well? You already have the design work done, just changeor modify a few of the bits that are notably Tau.

Because bases vary so much I've not been able to come up with a reliable, practical method of clamping the actual base. The basic handle does come with four platforms for about $8. (plus there will be a separate sheet of just platforms)

I'm not sure how you waste blu-tac. I just spent about $3 and have enough to mount about thirty models, and it's reusable.
