Test Cuts!! The Peregrine starts to take shape. This being a test build, I have, of course, forgotten to cut a few important parts, notably about half of the undercarriage parts and most of the bits around the engines.
Found a few problem areas that will need tweaking with the way the cockpit is assembled needing a more straight-forward approach. Nothing that will be visible on the final model though.
I took the liberty of cutting the fancy floor panels and cockpit details so I could check them for fit as well.
Yessssss. Excellent. Prepare the time dilation cannon for firing. I must have an excuse to use this but I only play fantasy and steampunk games currently.
That's a brilliant piece of engineering and modelling, Mousemuffins. All the more impressive that it's made out of something as simple as cellulose. I can't wait to see the finished product!
I'm now having all sorts of evil ideas due to the peregrine, and I am now wondering if you could make the engine components available separately for those contemplating 28-32 mm scale dropship construction.
Please? Pretty please with large orders on top?
The floor panels and grates are just cardstock, yes? I don't know all that much about laser CNC, but how big is your cutting table (I.e., max sheet size)? How long did your test cut of a single ship take, minus some of the details you said you excluded?

We have two 8x4' beds and a couple of smaller machines. The basic pergrine will take about 50-55minutes to cut the whole thing. The floor panels are approx. 10 minutes and the cockpit was about 5.
So. Distracted again. The curvy bits on the Peregrine worked out so nicely That I was inspired to try some space elf stuff.
So, While I'm waiting for a final cut /build version of the peregrine, Curvy green pointy things happened.
I'm kinda partial to the unarmed version, myself. Note that there are no engine exhausts. Where space elves are going, they don't need exhausts.
Darn it. First you make me want a worm. Next it was bees and spiders. Now I need a praying mantis also.
The civilian or M.S.E.L (majikal spayce elf layzorz) version does look better. The skinless doesn't look bad either, I think the problem is the turret looks tacked on or an afterthought.
Deffmoons are in the next lot of releases, hopefully in a week or so.
Okay. I need opinions.
the boss said "design a paint station". Now many of you, myself included, don't need or want one. And that's fine. But let's assume you do.
My design features, so far:
Replaceable cutting/ work area, Customizable tool/material/paint spaces (order the modules that suit you), fully reversible (Just incase you are not special and need a boring right handed lay-out) , a samurai-esque paintbrush holder and some shallow tray areas for putting things in.
It's only smallish. If this works out well I'll do a larger version.
Would you add anything? Take it away?ideas for modules?
I'd say the big things for me would be making sure that the paint bottle slots were compatible with everything from eyedroppers to Badger's Miniatare line. Also a module that had multiple small compartments for assembly line builds.
Updated the Workstation thing a bit. Now 50mm deeper, Replaceable work surface is now the same size as an A4 cutting mat. Carry Handles have been/will be added to all modules.
I'm not going to make holes for all types of paints as that's not actually terribly efficient. I will make a Larger holed version of the dropper bottle rack though 'cos it's kinda cool.
Instead of making multiple sized holes in a single piece of MDF, would you considering multiple sheets of MDF with different holes?
That way when you order it you can get the base pack + 'Vajello sized paints' sheet, or 'Citadel sized paints' etc.
As I understand it this should allow you to have the base set mass produced and just add in the requested sheet of MDF with the appropriate holes cut to size. Having a bunch of each sheet style prepared should make it easy to action.
Personally I'd get rid of the drawers. I have a paint station with drawers like that and (for me) they tend to be completely wasted space. Not tall enough or big enough to put anything in. At most they're good for bits boxes... in which case I can get bigger, roomier ones from any hardware store.
Especially where they are at the back of the rack seems weird. I would think people would be setting it up on a desk where the drawers are awkward or completely inaccessible.
If you want to make drawers, IMO make them either:
- tall enough to hold 'short' paint pots (GW & possibly P3)
- large enough to be filled with dropper bottles laying on their sides
- wide enough to hold hobby tools - paint brushes, sculpting tools, knives, files - without them needing to go diagonal. Maybe even another 'samurai' style holder inside the drawers.
Also, +1 for Vain's idea. I bought another company's hobby rack ages ago when I had Citadel pots and have been switching to dropper bottles - it would be great if I could just replace the plates with the holder holes rather than replacing the entire rack. Or just sell it with 3-4 sheets at once anyway.
Oh, I agree they are not the most practical drawers. I just thought I'd make use of the otherwise wasted space at the back.
I'm guessing I could include a different to part for the paint holder, so 25 and 32mm holes. Making them easily swappable would be a fairly resource consuming job though. More parts, more cutting, more weight, more expense for something more easily achieved by swapping out the whole module. Easy to add a few extra slots to raise the floor for shorter paint pots like GW.
I have an MDF paint station and there are two things I really miss:
1. better paint brush storage. It has tons of small holes but most of them are so big that the brushes lean to one side and I always snag them when trying to pick something up. As many single-brush holes as possible with a few quite big ones for things like hobby knives would be preferable to me personally. I also LOVE the little horizontal brush rack in the front of your design, that's much preferable to holes and in fact I would like to see even more of those.
2. Minis-in-progress shelves. Dedicated space for say a regiment of 10 models so you can keep them within reach while you're working on one at a time.
I use the similar sized drawers on my paint rack to store tubes of paint, in particular AK Interactive true metals, so they do have some use for some people.
If the ship is 28/32 mm I'm in. I've been hoping for something like this for a long time. I'm not into SF but this will get me into it. I've been looking for ships that you can play in. This is it. Please make bigger ships.
Automatically Appended Next Post: When will they be for sale and how much?
Regarding the paint bottle issue, I'd make use of the lovely paint racks you already make. Either make the existing racks slot into the work station, or don't worry about it at all. Who says you need one structure to hold absolutely everything?
Supplies!!!!!
New things. Now on the site are our new Frontier Objectives, for all your Mercenary Needs. Models include printed fronts for the vending machines.
I think I have most of the bugs ironed out of the Peregrine, and am starting a proper build.
As is the tradition with models of things that fly, one should start with the cockpit. Now, it has to be admitted that this is many levels of insanity and ligiterately bazillions of tiny, tiny pieces. Never fear, there WILL be a simpler version for wusses and the less adventurous.
Here are the parts, all nice and rendered in sketchup.
...and the alternate, slightly sadder, simple version.
...which I'm sure will be adequate for the majority of you.
and the parts assembled, IRL.
Assembled using a good quality PVA/white glue. You may notice some parts are darker than others, this is because I've put a drop or two of thin superglue on the more fragile components to reinforce them a bit. Also, the main parts are not glued in place yet to facilitate easier painting. Which I'm kinda looking forward to.
Mousemuffins... when will you guys be letting us commoners order one of these amazing ships for ourselves? This ship is, without a doubt, the coolest piece of terrain I've ever seen. I want it SO BADLY.
Mousemuffins wrote: Hmmm. Whilst it's pretty much impossible to give everyone everything they want, maybe this will work?
The water cup holder could have a sliding holder fence that's secured with a screw, so you can get a relatively snug fit with any cup, at least in one direction.
In similar fashion, adjustable fences might work nicely for paint bottles etc.
The cockpit roof it'self isn't designed to lift off, but the windows are large and everything is visible. There no space in there to put figures though, unless you are an enthusiastic converter or sculptor. The Hull roof Does lift off, however.
ETA on release is, well, as soon as we can, but I expect it will be about Christmas.
At the moment it's looking like four kits. The Peregrine Y2K itself, An interior set (simple), an interior set (advanced) and exterior set (for all the paneling, fancy undercarriage, engine baffles and wotnot.
All right, I know that I'm threatening threadromancy here, but I've heard Mousemuffins has been working to expand his range and volume of production, so I figured this might be an opportune time to bring these up.
1) I'm wondering if anyone who has CNC's Tactical Response Vehicle has any pics comparing it size-wise to a Space Marine Rhino. I've looked around and haven't been able to find any.
2) Did the up-armoured and up-sized versions of the TRV just not get to production because there wasn't enough market for it?
3) The MkII Transporter is an awesome model. Has there been any thought of producing larger versions? You know like, one that might be able to carry a giant robot? Or a larger one designed for ship-boarding actions? You know, just thinking that with certain box sets being mass produced, there may be a market for a greater variety of Transporter models.
If so, wow, I think I just found my Malifaux Quarantine Zone buildings.
I'll keep an eye on the kickstarter too. I have a couple of their models and they're gorgeous. Not really looking for another game, but if they've got some good miniature pledges I might consider it.

I resisted WOLSUNG, but I don't think I'll be able to resist this one!
Any thoughts/reviews on the actual gameplay here?
Supposed to be gameplay information coming soon, along with complete rules.
I backed Wolsung hard, and am backing this hard too. The Egyptian faction they've shown in the SG list couldn't have been any more perfectly crafted for my wife

i think the bit about "painted MDF" is explaining that its an MDF building that's been painted and it wont come like that.
This looks really amazing! You might want to create a new thread specifically for it though, so people who may not be looking at this thread can see your kickstarter!

It's not my KS, I just linked to it
It does deserve it's own thread though. Maybe when I get back from work.

Yeah, I saw the bit on the kickstarter page.
Still, they'd make great Malifaux Quarantine Zone buildings. So I'll definitely keep them in mind.
I've seen these terrain pieces in person, they are absolutely amazing. An excellent compliment to Sebastian's equally amazing Twisted miniatures. Glad to see things are going well with the KS, best of luck!
Now . . . the hard question . . . what do I pledge for ?. . .
Yes, the Peregrine Y2K will be made available. We are going through some re-structuring and have just upgraded our laser and so have to spend a bit of time changing files to a different format.
Many new things are in the works. many. oh my yes.

Seriously the Peregrine Y2K has been at the top of my list since seeing it here last year, literally checking your website once a week to make sure I don't miss it. It's just so, so cool.
I'm going to use it as the personal vessel of the mercenary Hansa in games of Beyond the Gates of Antares.
Exciting news today.
Miniature Scenery is under new management!
For the last few weeks we have been hard at work converting files from Gcode to a new vector friendly format and test building things. Soon though we will start to tackle all of the other concept models you have been seeing around the place and start releasing them! Our designer though can not resist coming up with new things and designed a new bike model (this will probably be the first new release).
The Y2K Peregrine will not be far behind.
Along with the ownership change, there has been some business re-shuffling so we have dropped the "CNC Workshop" part of our name, and are now simply called Miniature Scenery. (we understand if you still call us "CNC Workshop" it's hard for us to get used to as well).
We have also purchased new equipment from Trotec Lasers (troteclaser.com.au) has been purchased to make the quality of miniaturescenery products even better. The new equipment features a movable bed and raster engraving capability which give us even more options for detail in the future. Keep an eye on the quality of your next orders and the new products that come out over the next few months, we hope you will be impressed.
Coming soon will be a new website, which is paypal and american express capable, along with better tracking and postage options.
As we settle in to our new business, we plan to revisit every aspect, from faster design and release times to better customer service. This will all take time however, so please bear with us as we address each part.
We look forward to your business in future and would love to hear any feedback you have for us.
Regards,
Miniature Scenery team;
Tim, Liz, Craig & Ben
New general email address: cogs@miniaturescenery.com
New management but our Mousemuffins here is still the one who makes things tick . Unless you are part of the new mgmt too, which would be well deserved!
I know name changes are never easy but I'm not sure Miniatures Scenery is the best pick, it's kind of generic and might be hard to find on name-based searches.
Hmm checked google, you should up first, so maybe I'm wrong.
"We have been updating some of our older designs to be compatible with the new laser. First cab off the ranks is the venerable "Pod Bunker" with a fresh lick of red paint It now includes some extra details such as the ladder and access hatch. Great for any scifi table in need of fortification!

They look great.... Too great :(
Is there likely to be a version with no interior? I would use it as a scenery piece, glued shut. All that superb inside work would never be seen.

Version 1. the scenery version. No interior, simplified construction.
Yess !!! FINALLY !!!! Take my money. Here, take my kid's allowance, too !!!!
Will you be including the "skylight" from Version 1 (that is in place of the roof gun turret) with the other two versions ? Or make it available separately ?
Is the first of the kits almost ready to take flight ? Do you think the other two will be available in time for Christmas ?

I was just looking back through that video. At ~2:41 there is a shot of what looks like new Sand Buildings? I notice those have square doors whereas the ones I have the doors are rounded. There's also a bridge and what looks like a big wall along two buildings. Is that just a sci-fi bridge and extra board? The building on the right has a big opening where the bridge connects, so that is definitely not one of your stock sand buildings. Are those in the pipeline to expand the sand buildings line, or just a custom job for personal use?
Saw the Y2K Peregrine for the first time yesterday. The design is so extraordinary that I just had to buy one (my hobby is spaceship modeling, not tabletop gaming). The thought that went into designing it is amazing. I love how you've incorporated real living spaces (head, bunk, airlocks, etc) into the design. I'm floored.
This will be my first wood/MDF model, and I'm really looking forward to building it!
I have a few questions though:
-Do you have a front profile view of the ship, with the doors open and closed?
-Will the model be "configurable" in that I can display it with doors open/closed and with landing gear extended/retracted?
(this is important for static displays AND for whooshing and pew pew pew pew'ing)
-Any plans for a deflector dish (or AWACS style antenna)?
The Y2K Peregrine spaceship is now available!
Are you up for the 1000 piece laser cut challenge?
This miniature spaceship comes complete with interior including:
- Cockpit and cockpit controls
- Entertainment console
- Two engines with individual manual controls
- Escape hatch
- Front and rear loading ramps
- Top mounted gun
- Sleeping and toilet areas
- Multiple technical widgets and panels
- Even a coffee machine!
Kit is entirely laser cut cardboard and MDF wood. Our most detailed kit yet!
Available from the website:
http://miniaturescenery.com/ProductPage.asp?CODE=PEREGRINE
Mrwoolery: The Undercarriage and rear door are not designed to be operable, but *could* be assembled either open or retracted.
On your website there is a tiny picture of a garbage truck in the picture marking the 'vehicles' section. I've never seen it for sale. Is it an abandoned design?
Available now, the E.A.G.L.E Bus! Hovering to a terminal near you.
http://miniaturescenery.com/ProductPage.asp?CODE=EAGLEBUS This MDF kit has a removable roof and full interior with seating for 22 students plus 1 driver. Perfect terrain for filling in open roads on any futuristic table.
Done a bit more mucking about with the turret though.
and got inspired by a Jagdpanther.
They are a while off yet.
Now that you've got the Peregrine all sorted (and it looks awesome), is there a chance you'll revisit these designs? I really love the dual front wheel design on them, and they'd make wonderful futuristic stand-in's for Leman Russ tanks! Cheers!
Not any time soon, I'm afraid. We have a metric butt-ton of cutting to do for the Twisted Kickstarter before we release anything else, and we have a short-list of things prepared for after that. The Heavy TRVs are not even on the cards for the moment.
That is a brilliant miniature! Sad to see those things have survived into the sci-fi future, but look forward to making the destructable terrain pieces in games

Ahhh no worries. I think they look bloody awesome, but I can wait for them to be released later on down the track. I've got more than enough to keep me busy, but these fit wonderfully with the aesthetic I want to go with for a future Imperial Guard army. In the mean time, I better get started saving my pennies for a Peregrine, it looks amazing!

I'm getting quite a bit of your stuff via the "Twisted Steampunk" Kickstarter, and can't wait to see what else you come up with for that world!
Hooray! all of the Twisted scenery is cut, with just few Instructions left to finalize.
to Celebrate, Tank thing:
The monstrous Scuttle Bug Transport is now available on our website.
http://miniaturescenery.com/ProductPage.asp?CODE=SCUTTLE This MDF kit comes with an optional bulldozer blade and many many legs.
*scuttle* *scuttle* *scuttle*
I like it but are there any plans for a more generic version?
If there was a version without the spikes of evil and semi-organic look I'd be all over it. Especially if it kept the camera shutter style main hatches just closed at the center rather than the holes.
We have a new website! Is all pretty and stuff. There are a few problems, and a couple of things to sort out, but it seems pretty stable and not at all inclined to burst into flames.
To celebrate the almost total unlikelihood of fire, we are having a 20% off sale! Good for a week or so. let us know via the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MiniatureScenery/ if you have any problems.
Impractical-looking, but awesome. You did a nice job with the tentacles of turning three flat pieces into something that looks like a fully articulated machine.
Yeah I actually got one of those worm things but holy cow are these things intense to put together! Almost a feel like building a puzzle to me... good activity to recruit older kids into if they're up for it
RiTides wrote: Yeah I actually got one of those worm things but holy cow are these things intense to put together! Almost a feel like building a puzzle to me... good activity to recruit older kids into if they're up for it
I am painting mine yellow, and putting the name CAT on it.... (Post apocalyptic setting - they are terraforming machines that are running amok. And, yes, built by Caterpillar. )
The Auld Grump, 'cause don't it look like a hungry caterpillar to you?
I'll what I can organise. In the mean-time, The measurements are on the website, and it sits somewhere between a rhino and a land-raider for footprint (tentacle print?) but is visually a bit smaller, 'cos the tentacles are thin.
Did I imagine there being a simplified, no-interior Peregrine? With Star Wars Legion coming out soon I was going to show it to someone as a piece of terrain/objective to fight over but I could only find the complex version.
I think I remember there being 2 or 3 versions mooted?
These orc releases are the first in bunch of items designed to clear a rather extensive backlog of items that haven't made to production yet. there are about ten orc things to do, then we'll get onto the rest.
We have some ideas for new Twisted stuff, but it's all secrety for the moment.
I'm kind of sad there's not an option for it to be breathing fire.
But yeah, that thing is cool. I'm probably ordering it and an Ursula soon, mostly just want to wait and see the rest of the stuff from that Orc-tober silhouette because if it's more stuff like this, my order might grow in size.
This line of releases is pretty damn cool. It's hitting the point where you can pretty much build an army out of Miniature Scenery's Orc range. It mostly needs HQ options.
Mousemuffins wrote: Hmmm. Whilst it's pretty much impossible to give everyone everything they want, maybe this will work?
Sending you a pm about this
Actually, we expect to launch this about Christmas. We've just ordered the cutting mats. The final product is a bit changed from this, but I'm still open to suggestions.
When looking for the new releases, I ran into one of Mousemuffins' old releases.....
That dripping sound you hear?
That's me, drooling....
The Auld Grump
Yeah, that's one of my favourites. Before I decided that 40K just wasn't doing it for me any more, I had plans to pick up one of those for my Orks and put tracks on it. May still happen on day...

To heck with orks - my brain immediately put it together with the Dreadmere expansion from the Reaper Bones 4 Kickstarter....
Spoiler:
So, now I have the seeds for a gothic-dieselpunk-horror setting!
Someone linked this on facebook. This looks brilliant.
I've started making my way through this thread and found people mentioning warrmill to make shipping to the EU a lot less pricey. Is there a way to buy these at a decent shipping rate?
I am reeellly Tempted to buy that kit just to have one because that looks super cool and some how fits the over the top nature of 40k. My only thought would be to add more of the 'tall' windows on the side between each of the small buttresses
*EDIT* Anyone that has ever been on a double decker knows how common those spilled drinks are... and how long the freakin' steps stay sticky afterwards.
Charax wrote:Will we be seeing a version with the ridges from your preview?
We decided to remove the ridges because it leaves more room for custom painting/unit markings and it was pointed out that it looked a little too garbage truck.

IIRC from my old Hornblower books that should be a sloop of war? Anyways looking great!
She's what would have been known as a Sloop of War. Swan Class. Small, capable ships that were not quite big enough to be a sixth rate (20 guns or more). Though the extra carronades would have brought her up to twenty. Nominal crew of 125 and 300 tons with a length of 29 meters at the gundeck.

Nice. I had a suspicion that she was based on a real hull. Nice clean lines.
Hard to recognize a sloop without seeing the rigging.
Freakin' gorgeous.
*EDIT* Blackwall Frigate - 1853 Despite the name, they were armed merchantmen, not ships of the line.
Have you considered selling the 'pencil sketches' on RPGNow?
Some would be excellent for people that need clip art for a pirates game. (It is possible that I have snatched the ones that you have shown here, for exactly that (unpublished) purpose.)
As a publisher's resource, they would be quite handy.

Awesome news. Always been hard to justify ordering from you without doing quite a large order. Though always did enjoy, being on the west coast, that I got shipments from you 2 days after you mailed them out.
I got 3 TRVs earlier in the year. Great kit, delighted with it! Any progress on the heavier variants you were designing. If so, when can we expect them? Thanks
I'm looking at your Battlegrounds set as a possible solution for an Adeptus Titanicus table. Do you have any plans for more Battlegrounds and have you considered making one at AT scale that would even work with the modular buildings GW sells?
FW is releasing their resin 2x2 boards for a crazy price so I think there will be a market for more of these types of modular Battlegrounds sets.
For this week and next week the Siren kit will be available at a special price with a free custom ship name upgrade.
The HMS Siren is a huge kit designed to be true scale 28mm to make models feel at home while standing on the deck. When assembled the kit is 28 inches long and includes 16 resin cannons. Optional extras include Swivel Guns, Carronades and the captains cabin detail upgrade.
The Siren kit includes:
- Complete MDF and Cardboard hull
- Stump masts for game play
- Details such as stove, chain pumps and capstan winch
- 16x resin 6 pounder cannon
- Around 500 pieces in the kit!
Optional Extras:
- Captains cabin upgrade detail
- Swivel guns for top railings
- Carronades for quarterdeck
- Custom name plate (Free with pre-order)
The instructions are pretty comprehensive, and can be downloaded from the webpage.
We also have a couple of smaller boats that will be released shortly that have been designed using the same techniques, perfect for try without the high cost.
32' Pinnace.
They should be approx. $35/ $45 AUD (armed and unarmed) respectively.
oh man... I love these kinds of boats. I have a 3'ish foot (simpler) model I built at least a decade ago (my cat knocked it over and snapped the bowsprit :( )
I'm going to have to grab these at some point. The Siren is up for pre-order, but will still go on the store as normal right?

I'm going to have to grab these at some point. The Siren is up for pre-order, but will still go on the store as normal right?
oh. Uhmm... I'm not sure. If you email directly I'm sure the boss can answer that.

Speaking as an unaffiliated fan I’m going to guess those are painted pics. Having worked with laser cut mdf before you just don’t get that kind of uniform color on the edges and faces of parts without work, typically edges are extremely dark brown or black from the cutting process. Also there’s shading in recesses that aren’t just natural shadow, the color of the resin guns, and some slight splotches on the rear of the unarmed version just don’t seem right for unpainted.

We also have a couple of smaller boats that will be released shortly that have been designed using the same techniques, perfect for try without the high cost.
32' Pinnace.
They should be approx. $35/ $45 AUD (armed and unarmed) respectively.

That small cannon-boat will be ordered as soon as it is released!!!
I will proudly build, paint and display it at my desk at work. (I work in the Navy... )
Our first fully downloadable 3D printed model is now available.
The Fox ATV files come with two different armaments and optional side armour panels and rear fenders. The crew cabin can also be left open or closed.
This is our very first adventure into fully 3d printed files and is a test to see how well they go and if it is worth us making more in the future.
Files are for personal use only. Anyone running a 3D print business can email us to discuss options.
