BC if there is one model to add sparkles/glitter to it is fulgrim, you can do it around his eyes because we all know fulgrim would totally go for that glitter concealer.
The instructions for Fulgrim don't exist on Forgeworld's site any more. Used to be there was a url to follow on his packaging. There are large areas with no explanation, such as the lappets (Eagles), standard top, cape construction, etc.
The ribbons on his cloak have large lumps of flash in between them that look dreadful if viewed from behind. I carved those out, and then fumbled the scalpel. One of those tiny cuts that just wouldn't stop. It wasn't serious.
I do like to have a cat nearby when modelling, because if something drops off the table, they walk over and stare at it. Found many dropped bits that way.
Lappets are those flaps that hang from women's bonnets, or so I was told years ago by a Mennonite. Mennonite women-- at least where I grew up-- wore bonnets of a sort, and probably still do. The Amish as well. Apparently they are also a part of the Bishop's Mitre too, according to Mr. Google.
Having seen some of Forgeworld's books, I would not expect much language proficiency, in English or in Latin, from them. They make good models. That suffices fore me.
Studded apron straps, this seems the best term for Anglophones to use, IMHO. They are studded; they are straps; they form an apron. Leave Latin to the Romans.
For keeping the small bits, hold the piece inside a box, then cut. Works for me most of the time. A hand vac and a screen work the rest of the time
Sorry to see you had to pull out of the contest. Do we need to worry about the cat?
Nah, I love my cats, sincerely. They're indoors with me all day, so are super social, and super odd. Bottle reared two, so I'm to blame.
One's a rescue who was beaten, so she doesn't seem to understand that we like her and fuss is unconditional. She's constantly amazed that we stroke and carry her, and purrs louder than the TV.
The middle one is built like a truck. Tall, square and solid. Acts like a dog, will 100% of the time come and sit when called, anywhere.
Last one is smarter than me. She solves puzzles, unlocks doors, lies to us (screams in pain to get the other two in trouble when they're sleeping), and makes up for it by being adorable.
That's the one that likes to carry things in her mouth, but will trade for better offers. She also eats and drinks with her paws like a monkey.

They are not. This is just what I've got so far. There will be 365, but after this point we're going to look at what needs buying to be useful, rather than quantity.
The scattered ones are repair or euthanasia candidates.
I've seen worse but usually on the assembly side. Plastic Glue is my bane in Ebay lots, Once my wife got a lot of tyranids where the arms of the genestealers were held on by tendrils of dried styrene cement. A good strip and a lot of scrubbing and they will at least be functional.
Someone should call the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Plastic for some of those poor marines. I mean, I've seen some sloppy paint jobs where it was obvious the owner didn't thin his paints adequately, but this stuff...
Welp, now I don't feel so bad about my own crummly painted figs.
But man, what was even going thru the original person's head at the time? Buying a metal mini and removing just about everything that made the mini worth getting... coating a mini so much it's got to be more paint than plastic, then on top of that somehow managing to make the grass look like tinsel...
It's scary when the primary colors green-blob-for-a-face is the best of the bunch.
I've lost the figure but I do have one that the owner lost the head for. So they just put flesh coloured paint and green (hair colour) on the stump.
It looked no less ridiculous than the rest of the figures.

That's it for this topic and these dudes, because it'll ruin the impact of the actual project if I give up all the goodies right now. :p
Absolutely. I never used to thin my paint and thought that my painting was excellent. I'm fortunate enough to have thrown them out so i cannot see them now

The ones I'm posting are purely the inexplicably funny ones.
There are some that are clearly parent and child projects that I'm not ripping on. One has beautiful edge highlighting and then the kid painted the rest. Another has a freehand banner that was clearly pencilled in by Ma or Pa and then the kid did the painting.
I'm just here to have a chuckle because we all remember doing this, not to be an ass to kids.
How does one even clean that black Marine there is just so much paint on it. Some of them just look absolutely destroyed, but I'm not sure because of all the pain (edit: It's supposed to be paint but I typoed it, but pain is kinda fitting to.) on top of it.
I can hear the thousand cries of models being mullered like that.
I struggled to do 5 in a month, if it is this, that will be truly epic.

I'm pretty sure people know you well enough to know you're not an arse BC. I agree it is funny to look back at where we all started. But remember kids, (read this next bit with a "Dad voice" in your head), if you are starting off painting like this now, don't despair. Be proud you've taken the first step. Soon you will produce minis like BC and everyone else on here that wow you! (public service announcement ends )

And then I scrolled down. I'm not sure whether I'm more scarred by Sergeant Faceplant McHeadbutt or Arm Fall Off Marine...
And that Techmarine... why did you have to point out the eyeball? Why?
Yeah I know. No one loves the old 2nd ed boys so I often see them in batch lots I've even used mine as parts for Deathwatch, but I might chuck one in to the next Tactical squad I do
Indeed, you seem to have quite the job ahead of you Buttery.
P.S. I have been watching this blog for months and I only just realised that your username (and the name of this blog) is 'Buttery' not 'Butterly'. I don't know how or why I added the 'L' in there but I did.
I noticed you're a regular poster (8000 posts in a year, wowzer ) so i thought i'd check out your blog.
Never heard of Biostrip before, it looks super effective! I may need to invest. It seems to have the same effect as gun-cleaner on metal models, without completely dissolving the plastic. Whenever i've stripped a fig, i've always thought it would be neato to press the peeled paintwork and make artwork with it.
For me the water Kelpie is the highlight, very nicely done.
You also have an adorable, photogenic (vain? ), moggie, a big plus in my book!

Thank you!
And in all honesty, I am going to cut right back in 2016 because my posting was a symptom of my day job (machining clothing and having a cellphone in my other hand). I was mortified to see that total go so high.
The Biostrip tends to love certain primers and hate others. Some come off like that, and yes, you end up with a "skin" you can roll up or stretch.
Some turn to chalk crap that take 2-3 doses at 45min a go...
Some instantly wreck a toothbrush and turn into Dettol tar, and it's always red 1990s GW starter set paint. Instantly know it's a duff strip when I start one of those. All I can do is scrape and retry.
Mina is a tart. Some day I'll get the video of her stealing my milky tea up online.
Agree with the others about the video, that paint came right off! Have you tried Simple Green (not sure if they have it in the UK?) and is this more effective?
I guess the flipside also, do you know if they have Biostrip 20 in the US, and if so what it's called?
Make sure if looking online, you are trying to buy Biostrip 20
"Biostrip" is an industrial stripper that will give you and your descendants cancer of the everything.
"Biostrip 20" is a milder product you may use indoors and wash off skin. It reeks of Ketones, and some of their claims are very dubious (in the U.K, companies only have to correct themselves on labelling claims if challenged), but is not going to shrivel your pebbles or melt your marines.

SG and Dettol work on the Iso alcohol basis iirc.
Biostrip works in 45 to 60 minutes to do what I showed above. You could completely clean even the most stubborn figure in 3 hours, and be painting the same day.
Is it safe? Pass.
Is it less stinky than Dettol and SG? Yep.
I do not know what the USA equivalent is, but I'll try and find out.
I absolutely love Biostrip. I've just ordered another tub, 5 litres at £33 this time. My 500ml pot lasted ages, but I never want to go back to Dettol, and I think it is better than the old Fairy Power Spray, let alone the new version.
Add me to the Biostrip advocates here, it is amazing stuff. My Dad peruses Car Boot Sales for any cheap minis and the amount of thickly/poorly painted disasters that I have been able to salvage is excellent. And no more minis smelling of Dettol forever.
Cos-play? you mean... you're not a real Commissar? All this time I thought that... well.
I just don't know what to think anymore. Next you're going to say you're not even buttery...
No, I'm sure that would go somewhat counter to your role of keeping moral up. Unless you could fit it up to shoot water. And not get arrested while carrying it to work.
I can't say I rate phone or tablet play. You have to have two hands on the screen, and I do not like playing that way. However even I enjoyed trying.
The controller version looks great fun however. The script is solid; closely from the book, and the voices are very good.
I can't say it's groundbreaking graphically, but it's not grating. They definitely have the look down.
In all honesty I just think the morale part of morale officer needs to be touched on more often.
My hair is that color, so I thought I'd have a little fun.
Shame about the hair having to go. Ever thought about a wig to cover it up while in work? You can rebel in the shadows and unleash the hairdo when they least expect it.
Sorry to hear about hospital trips. Hope all is well.
I was about to suggest a wig also , and then take it off when on break time. if your here in the USA then I'd say get a Donald trump wig and say it's a political statement .

I won the contest, which was very alarming to me.
I was by no means the best painter there. I can only guess they went with coolest rather than technical skill.
Colourful, funny, grim-dark with rainbows, surprised humility in winning... it must be a Buttery Blog!
The hair is awesome.
Too bad about work wanting that gone.
Meeting Dan as well, I know you say you have some not so good moments but you seem to have quite a few awesome ones!
Glad you enjoyed looking through. My boss is one of those people who absolutely jars with my personality, so sadly the hair is gone already. It's now completely white because they can't say that's not natural.
You could almost pull off being albino.
Red head?
You look similar to my cousin who has the most orange hair you would ever see.
With skin so white it hurts to see it in the sun.
She is in Japan now teaching and scandalized the village she was in: cut her hair to about 1cm long recently.
Anyway, cool stuff, sorry about the boss, hope you find something more to your liking when willing to make the change.
BTW, what material did you use for the skull on the hat?
You may have covered the build earlier (I promise I will catch-up).
The balance of the colouring and execution is great.
The models are awesome, the Sparrows faces are characterful.
Tiny and Soni give a one stop beefcake and cheesecake.
Wolfboy lends that little bit of disturbing for added interest.
Thanks guys. They were a joy to do, even if I did 9/10s of them between 8pm and 3am on Friday night.
I'm going to clean up some little bits, just need a sunny day.
They are for 7TV, I went to a gaming day at Wargames Illustrated.
Automatically Appended Next Post: (I ought to add it's been amazing to wake up to such positive comments. I really needed that after the past few days here)
Buttery those minis are a joy to look at. As has been said - brilliant colour choices and they are telling a story. Well done!
I am slightly distraught that they are not posted here on Dakka for me to vote on though. You would have been pleased with my votes, trust me
On a side note - how is 7TV to play? I'm discovering the rules for the fan made Doctor Who Miniatures Game which is apparently a sister game (the guy who made DWMG was convinced to create Crooked Dice and therefore 7TV by a friend and they now run it together and have brought DWMG under there wing as it were. So I understand anyway). I like that DWMG is very small and skirmish-based. I even found some solo scenarios and being a DW buff I have already thought of a couple of scenarios utilising the Zombicide zombie control mechanism which I'm gonna try at some point for monsters like the Sea Devils.
Sorry babbling. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about. Sorry
7TV is now onto second edition, and yes you are correct in the origin. Karl and Graeme are Crooked Dice's creators. I've followed them closely from early on, and they're lovely guys.
It plays very very fairly. It's a lot of fun, and cinematic style combat.
I'll see about getting them on Dakka Showcase when the painting contest is over. I don't like plugging.

Plug away. I think these at be your best minis to date
Looking at the "Sparrows" again I am quite impressed with them in particular.
For such small models, the facial detail I quite like.
Buttery: Do you use shader / washes? (really watered down paint with a good dose of "flow-aid").
I don't think you do, it may be worth looking at to accent the recesses of a model surface.
Your edge highlight on the woman's boot seam I almost mistook it for an actual lighting effect: well done.
Thanks for pointing at 7TV, that looks like a lot of fun.
It certainly is detailed enough.
Now I know where to get Not-Battlestar Galactica minis and horde of others.
I can now find suitable minions for my "Dr Steel" evil scientist.
I use them if I have time to blend them in properly. The dogs have been washed and painted, for example.
I did the sparrows, tiny and Jake in one night (9pm to 3am) so I just did their shading by hand. the dancer on the palette was not inked apart from her hair.
I also paint to suit topic. I wash and shade 40K because it's a GW gritty style, but I prefer a more natural colour myself.

With daemonettes at the back using long poles with alternating "carrot" <shudder> and "pointy" stick to keep the "prisoners" properly motivated till exhausted.
Yeah, getting run over may be the better outcome.

it's only lightly piled together right now, but that was generally the idea. The running Mordian is either going in front of the wheels or in one.
Just bought 2 Tauros Assault Vehicles Buttery, words cannot describe how small they are! I was really shocked. At least your pictures gave me some idea of what i was getting into. Thanks!
Well, I sadly lost my favourite Enginseer, so I went out and found a new one for the time being.
It's the new plastic character model, and apart from some odd shaped bits and details due to it being a 3D sculpt, I quite like him.
So the first step for a shiny clean red... is to paint it yellow. Because pigment theory and all that. Insane? Probably.
Works? Yes.
And because he's going to have those lovely bionic steel legs, those are going to start with a base coat of.. dark blue. Because it gives a very different feel to black.
"Butters, you've lost it."
Buttery hears ya. Buttery don't care.
Excuse the Superglue mess. I pricked the tube with a pin and it sprayed all over the table.
Let's get some GW style highlighting on that red and metal.
And because I can't not make things fancy, I stole a set of Skitari decals. They're not perfect, but because this figure has masses of cabled on his back, I think that it breaks the shape up nicely.
I started laying down the base colours for the brass and copper - scorched brown. I also fiddled with some cable colours.
That orb is a bastard. Cut the thin end from the sprue first, or it will shatter.
This is a bit of a jump. I did his checks by doing vertical stripes of cream in the size I needed. I then tidied with the red. Then added the horizontal band of cream. Then white highlighting and some sepia here and there to look a little stained. I also glued his pistol on so I wouldn't lose it overnight. I wish I hadn't. it really doesn't fit with the rest of the model.
And I didn't neaten the pattern here because it goes under a backpack anyway.
Techy is looking good! I sometime undercoat my silvers with blue and my golds with purple, but I've never done red with yellow. I'll have to give it a go some time
I also find it fun to do the same with skin tones - especially with faces. Undercoating with blue is a particular favourite of mine. I find using a different colour as a base layer, even if you completely cover it up again, makes you think about the colours differently and can have some great results
Nice! Just base sprayed my one and the ravenguard deathwatch fella, literally with the last drops of paint from the can I got them done.....shaking and swearing at the can as I went along........"cmon you useless gak......one....more.....blast..." Like that heavy cog trim to the cloak's cowl.....may just have to nick that......and the blue basecoat from the metal
The blue is actually because I'm colourblind, and I basecoated my friend's entire 100pt skitari army in black-blue, thinking it was black. The result looked very nice, after I put the steel on, so I use it for my admech.
Guns and inorganic metals I'd still go for black first.
Well I'm trying to a little less off the wall with my GW stuff this month, so I can use them as examples for commission painting.
Really if anyone at my local saw my commissars and other work, they wouldn't let me within ten feet with a brush.
Gotta keep reminding myself that I have to do my Daemons rather than crack open that delicious Start collecting: Space Wolves.
I want to do my daemons, I'm just totally unaccustomed to having enough to start painting.
I wouldn't mind seeing a painted version of the Doom-wheel chariot Soulgrinder. Or maybe just some Buttery Daemons in general. Well, I wish you luck with whatever you choose to paint, and I look forward to seeing them as always.
P.S. Good luck finding Alfie, he was is a key member of the Butter co.
Very interesting basecoats with the yellow and blue! Might try experimenting with that. Techpriest looks great. I like the patterns on the cloak. Nice and clean.
Well, it's not painting, so I have hosted it on Imgur, but this is why I haven't been getting very far this week.
My job was bullying the life out of me, so I quit voluntarily a week ago. I was a little stunned, but then I saw there was an LGBT festival in Manchester with some vending stalls going spare, so I went back to what I do reasonably well: Machine Embroidery.
I designed a load of hoodies.Some subtle, some less-so.
Buttery: Very good at sewing. Doesn't own an iron.
I could help you out next time, they're one per attendee but I don't need another. It's a pain for difficult to reach spots though. Can't even put his fingers on to begin with!
Yeah mate. I would need base cost & pay pals conversion/payment fee (they charge for converting from €/$ to £ even if you send in £) and a second payment for postage.
I can also get the exclusive supplements, pin badges and the 3 minis (Bugman's, the Dwarf Sorcerer and I forget the third).
Buttery! Sorry to hear about your life change with job. Sounds like you made the right call to protect yourself. Your machine embroidery is spectacular! How did the stall go?
So I'm working on my daemon army this month, as a break from Titan.
This was not a lot of fun to build (and isn't glued to the base)
Priming and airbrushing this fether tomorrow.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm aiming to finish:
20 x Daemonettes
10 x Custom Seekers of Slaanesh
1 x Very Custom Daemon Prince
1 x FW Keeper of Secrets
1 x Exalted Chariot
1 x Custom Soulgrinder (including Daemonettes)
1 x Librarian
10 x Cultists
Sounds like a pretty full month for you then, Buttery! That chariot model looks pretty cool and will look great when painted, but it seems like it will be really hard to paint with it all assembled like that. It might have been easier to do in subassemblies, I would think. As I said, I'm looking forward to it all the same!
Thats shaping up to be one delicious daemon force. Nice to see Slaanesh getting some love for change - too much Khorne about these days! Get on with the paint - your audience is eager adn waiting
Oh lord I wish I was at the painting stage! Ha!
No I'm still building and modifying for another day at least.
The Daemonettes are ready to do.
The Seekers have changed arms, and each need a base sculpting, and a cloak adding (two session putty job). Then I can add the heads.
The Soulgrinder will have to be painted in parts (it's two Doomwheels and another wheel powered by Daemonettes)
The cultists are converted with scion guard and Skitari parts, so need minor putty fixes
The chariot is ready to prime.
The KoS is now a torso on a base.
The librarian is basecoated but needs detailing and assembly.
There's a surprising amount of work goes into making a base look like it's covered in turd.
This is the start of a very loose and easy rough terrain base for my Soulgrinder. 99% of this will be under grass and debris. I just can't get the Fething wash to dry.
Gah! you changed your avatar!
Now the darn song will go through my head every time I see it! Oddly fitting and cute but still!! I am unsure "unsalted" is appropriate for your header but is pretty good!
You may want to change that to your avatar...

With all the knives on that chariot, there is good reason for there to be turd on the ground.
I am quite interested on how to present an "elegant" Slanesh daemonette army.
My mind keeps straying to burlesque or harem and all I got is a "slinky little black dress" goth thing going on (candles, roses, the whole works).
Ah! a theme of "forbidden fruit" some books... I have a sudden urge to dress a daemonette as a librarian. A different brand of things that go "bump" in the night.
Ballroom attire would have some difficulty without going into a brothel theme.
An explorer / tomb raider / safari "pith helmet" making fun is another.
Anyway, you certainly handle these challenges well.
I'm aiming for classy, I may fall short!
The infantry are all based like they're ransacking a church. There'll be broken stained glass.
Took me about a year to get those Diaz, I own roughly 25-26, and four are going to be in the soul grinder. Plus the tiny familiar Daemonette will be on the KoS base I think. Like, "Hey, meet my dad."
As to colour, are Slaanash not normally blue-ish, I know a lot of people have gone very pink with them lately, maybe as a break from the norm for you go dark, thinking shiny black.
I've gone with a purple version of how I did my blue Kelpie, but with sunset-blush mane and tail.
I need to do the wings shortly, thinking white feathers with take same blush to them,
I'll post up when I've got that done, and the details of his accouterments painted in. Right now it's very Barbie.
Fingernails came off, hand came off, one blade arm came off, one head horn, two tentacles (one of which tore out the socket it sat in)
I found all the pieces, but I was too annoyed to mend it last night.
I am going to FW in a week or so and begging them for a fingernail sprue, because this will happen again.
This was from 10" above the table.
I'd sat a metal corpse on the base and forgotten. As it slid, I scrambled to correct it and slammed the entire thing head first into the table.
Bollox. I dropped that big magos fella I scratch built and tried to catch it but that effort just shot the thing against the wall. Calmy picked up the pieces, put them on my desk and left the room not to return for two days. You're going intothe actuall FW shop? Hopefully they'll help a commissar out
I'm there a lot, they're lovely guys - and I'm honest so they help as much as they can.
They can't officially do anything off the company script though. I asked if they could swap my Titan knees once for two blanks, and they couldn't.
And yeah, I know that feeling. I mended the fingernails and stopped.
Tomorrow I'm going to finish my DP apart from basing, and airbrush paint the KoS with a beautiful petrol shimmer pigment I ordered.
Their leg, glove and tendrils will be done in that on black, the rest will be a shaded pure white, with purple stippling.
Nice. Can't fault FW/GW for their customer service. Hope they'll have the neccessary bits you need for you on hand.
I will make it to that place someday. Wisdom says I should leave my credit card out of my wallet that day. lol
Woof that is tough, I remember when I dropped my fire raptor and an entire wing cracked off. I just put it in the case and forgot about it for a month or so I was so depressed about it
Always love seeing a Slaanesh force come together. Very nice work thus far and very much looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. That keeper of secrets is a lovely model and I look forward to what you'll do with it.
I heard you were doing up some Slaanesh, Buttery, and you certainly are! Excited to watch the progress, lots of great stuff already - like that soul grinder
The theme you are going with on your Slaanesh is superb buttery. Fantastic choice. Sorry about the casualty, I snapped the leg from the Genestealer Patriarch base when coming back from holidays. Very irritated, the base was nearly completed have glued back together but not had the heart to fix the problem.
