Some progress on my Guard. I added the first infantry squad, using some more Maelstrom's Edge SecDef, and a heavy bolter, chainsword and bolt pistol left over from some Space Marine scouts. Also replaced the armoured Commissar's pistol with a storm bolter - Since in 2nd Ed, regular Commissars didn't have access to armour, I'll be running this guy as a Yarrick stand-in.

Post by: insaniak
So, as fun as it can be to just build stuff at random, for the sake of winding up with a coherent and usable force at the end of the process, I decided to sit down and write up an army list for my fledgling Guard army. This involved a combination of trying to figure out something that was going to function ok on the table, while looking at what I can make using Maelstrom's Edge minis with a smattering of 40K parts where absolutely necessary. What I came up with is below... It's a little character heavy, partly because that means not having to build as many infantry squads in the absence of tanks, and partly because I just can't resist the allure of all of those psychic powers flying around the table.
I'll expand on this later with another command squad and some more infantry, and maybe look at some vehicle or rough rider options. Right now, I'm putting together the second infantry squad.

Next Guard units...
- 'Ratling' stand-ins made from Epirian Contractors with SecDef arms and sniper rifles.
- 2nd Infantry unit with Sergeant's sword and plasma pistol stolen from Space Marine/Wolf Scouts, a MEdge Karist Radwave Emitter as a Meltagun stand in, and a lascannon made from a SecDef Chaingun with a barrel replacement. It's smaller than most modern 40K lascannons, although slightly larger than the Rogue Trader-era Guard lascannon. I think the barrel is too long, though, so will probably shorten it.
- Eversor Assassin stand in - an unconverted Karist Shadow Walker from Maelstrom's Edge.
- Inquisitor Lord stand-in - a Karist Kaddar Nova with some leg reposing and a right hand and staff (cybel glaive) taken from the MEdge 'Faction Expansion sprue'. The staff will serve as a force rod. He also has a Karist pulse pistol on his hip, which will count as a hand flamer.

While I did initially consider having the heavy weapons on spider drone legs, I'm going with the mortar base just having a built in suspensor unit, to avoid it needing a huge base.

So, stepping back a sec: that mule is so well done, especially the tires. The weathering is a little thing overall but it really helps to sell it.
So, the Angel - how did you prime it prior to the colorshift paint? How easy was it to make it look good? I bought some of that from GSW but I haven't cracked it open yet. (edit: never mind, I see you answered these questions in the other thread)

Trying to get back into the habit of doing some non-work-related hobbying of an evening, which has been tricky thanks to some ongoing health issues leaving me with no energy to spare by the end of the day... but, theoretically at least, I'm finally finishing these boys off.
Added some juves made from Chaos Marauders with a little height trimmed from their waist so they don't tower over the plastic gangers, and an oversized heavy courtesy of the new Goliath range. Now I just need to get some paint on them, and finish off the detailing on the rest of the gang.

A little more sculpting done this morning... For those not familiar with the original Necron range, they were fairly limited. I thought it would be fun to expand my 2nd ed Necrons with some of the options that were introduced with the 3rd ed codex and later. This was an attempt to create a Heavy Gauss Cannon for the original Necron Destroyer. We'll see how successful it was once I can get it printed...
1
99
Post by: insaniak
Test print. It's just a fraction too large, and some unfortunate support placement left some damage on the print when I removed them, so I have adjusted the scale a tad and tweaked the supports for a second test. Not too shabby so far though, I think.
1
99
Post by: insaniak
After some feedback elsewhere, I decided the cannon was just a bit too long, so shortened it up a bit. It's still long enough that its recognisably different to the regular cannon even when they're not side by side, which was my main concern with it size-wise, so I think that'll do.
Also started on some backwards-compatible rules updates...

WIP Rapier. Gun platform from PDC Gaming, servitor is an old Necromunda Goliath with a bionic arm made from a Maelstrom's Edge Scarecrow shoulder and repair claw from the Master Bot Handler.
I picked up one of these gun platforms from the Kickstarter originally to use as a Thunderfire, but then when I recently saw he was selling them as a bundle of 6(!) on eBay, I grabbed a passel to use as Rapiers and Thudd Guns for 2nd ed 40K and Necromunda.

I've been largely avoiding the new Necromunda models, as the scale creep makes them look odd against my existing collection. But for Goliaths, at least, scale creep didn't seem like as big an issue, and I loved the look of the new Stimmers and Forge Born box. 1 of each assembled so far, with the Stimmer just built as normal, for use either as an Ogryn or with some retro-fit rules for original Necromunda. I made some modifications to the Forgeborn, so I can run her as a regular Juve or Ganger, switching out the welder-thing for some regular weapons and shortening her thighs to better match the proportions and height of the older models. She's still a fraction taller, but doesn't look completely out of place. Still needs some gap filling...
...and apparently some more mould line removal on the old bolt pistol. Oops.

Slight change of pace, while I'm on holidays... Actually painting some 40k stuff again. My brother decided a while back that while he enjoyed playing, he hated painting, so asked me if I would finish his last couple of half-done units. After languishing in a box for day too long until I finally had time to look at them, I painted up the second combat squad (still needs chapter badges and unit numbers), based the whole squad, painted the Librarian's staff (converted from a thunder hammer he was running with previously), painted the tank turret and sponsons (converted from a razorback, using a model tank turret, land raider sponson plates and a plastic tubing autocannon barrel) and painted the banner for the standard bearer.

The sprue tower has me thinking of the teleporter rings from Stargate .
Also if you turn them on their ends they might be like the new 3D printed bunkers the US Military is making out of concrete. They have a gigantic printer that lays down layers of Concrete in giant horse shoe shapes and then lifts them up on end to make sections of arches. you put 4-5 of them in a row and a truck mounted missile system can pull under it. They are also making 3D printed barracks called B-huts.

So, here's a thing... I have a whole bunch of old Rogue Trader-era beakies sitting in a box downstairs, and I decided that if they were going to be sitting there, I might as well do something with them. So here's a test paint for a new Space Marine force, which (for now, at least) I'm calling the Ebon Crux.
It's a bit rough as this was just thrown together in between doing a bunch of other stuff today. The chapter badge in particular needs some refining... but it's good enough to see how they'll look. I'll probably put them together as a second edition force - a couple of Marine squads, a squad of the old plastic scouts, some original Space Hulk terminators and a metal Rogue Trader-era Dreadnought I picked up off eBay some time ago. Maybe a Predator or Whirlwind (the old kitbash version, just because I can) if it will fit in points-wise.

Test crew for Stargrave coming together... Since I haven't seen the full rules yet, this is pieced together from the crew creation rules excerpt based simply on what I think looks cool rather than how effective it will be in an actual game (which is how I tend to build forces for most games anyway), and the Captain and First Mate may need some tweaking once I get to see the equipment lists, but this is where they're at for now.
Mostly Maelstrom's Edge models, with a couple of ring-ins and useful parts from Hasslefree Minis and Wargames Atlantic. The Pathfinder (in the hat, front left) still needs a little putty on his legs, and then I can get some paint on!

That ork with the shokk attack gun is bringing back very fond memories of destroying a terminator squad in a bunker with one shot. That gun was so hit-or-miss. Of course, the big metal gun made the model so top-heavy it was nerve-wracking to stand him on any elevated terrain! I haven’t seen one in years. I’m so glad you painted him.
Dave looks good. Red and black is always a great dynamic scheme. Or is that dark orange? Either way, looks good with the neutral khaki as a third color.
