For the screw drill it should be the ones from either end, depending on how big you want your drill. And why wouldn't you want the biggest drill you could handle?
thanks mates for you nice comments on the riveters... and indeed the two on the right are about to terminally hammer some rivets inside a steel wall...see their buckets full of new rivets to work through?^^
by the way the one on the left is holding a heat gun to weld then these rivets in^^
and you bet there is someserious cussing around when these are on duty^^
at monkey...yep it flew by in a quick breeze^^ you know the saying no dwelling in the past, there is no time like the present^^
and i i think you are spot on with your choice of screws for the drills...i think i will take both versions...left and right and of course i will show you then^^
the caps i will saw off and then glue them in some sort of aperature...today was mostly lazy so no update pics.... but you can feel free to name the riveters^^ and if you would be so good dstein as to name your adress i will post them asap to you... would love to see those on your terrain and them lending you a helping and^^ (PM will suffice)
will see about that... i used a heavy weapon bit from a DA sprue now and glued a bead witha screw on will show pics later on... this will serve as a more tool like weapon an not as seen above as a sort of close combat weapon...you see what i mean later^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:sorry guys no pics to show you yet.... but i wasn´t lazy... the GS work marched on and i cobbled together a drill arm...pics will follow...
so guys i wnet and got some fresh (^^) pics of the work achieved today...
first the flash and none flash version of the drillarm/gun... you probably recognize as a true conniseur the bit i used...:
and then the open- visor guy...he got his backpack mounted today... he got the last bit of GS on my shelf mixed to make his powerpack stay on spot...
finer deatils will follow tomorrow...i really hate the curing time of GS...with all the creativity bubbling in me i have to stay put for so long a time it makes me itchy...
The drill looks fine on her own and I'd love to see it with body to gasp the overall look! Will the drill be a standard-issue or they will vary as the backpacks do?
well it wasn´t an old weapon bit... i had to do some serious chopping on that gun^^ but the barrel is still usable so not a total loss here...but i flinched a biot when cutting the new and shiny bit nevertheless^^
and storag , thanks^^ and i guess i will do variants of this drillversion... maybe i will convert a powerfist to wield the drill more directly to the hand...i can´t really be gangpressed to reapeat myself... i live for diversity^^
my first steamknight mostly is done... i contemplate the moment for now to prime it... i would love to do all in one go...the GS work is what is dragging me down...that an RL of course...
ok fellas...here is my update... i did today the last three drill weapon bitz...every one different to the others...some are a nod towards GWs way and others to a more traditional lookout...
also i did a bit of fixing GS work on the open visor guy...
look:
and i plucked up some currage to put together a steamknight completly...the pose should look like he uses the second arms with the drill for supporting the weapon but he looks a bit like he needs to pee...
the gun is a a tad influenced by one of my favorite british arms... the sterling patchett...the side mag at least^^
and a bit on an off topic note here...a question to you about me...
i think some of you might have read that i am unemployed...for quite a long time now...the point i am trying to make here is... it has been so long that i am unsure of what to actually do... i am far out of my learned professios either way...could you from data given from my musings in various threads here on thsi board come up with a possible aim in a profession for me? this is not me asking for you to employ me, but rather i am seeking a possible aid from you to get new ideas as to where i migt find some means to make an income and be proud about it but also like what i am doing.... so asking friends for pointing out some facts or ideas is the thought here...
I'm not convinced a big ol' power drill is the best support tool for a gun
Steam knights are looking great vik. I forsee several steals from that post alone The top drill is nicely brutal and quite suitable for my cyborks thank you.
Like the sten-gun look on the full knight.
On the guy with the open helmet are you going for a completely open look, or have the bottom of the face-plate showing as though it hasn't been pushed all the way back?
i think i will opt for the full open look... tho if i was able to do as you suggested it would look a ton better...but i fear that there are limits to my know how of achaeving that...if you have any good ideas...spill them...or i use a dill^^
loot away freely^^ the termy arm in my opinion is a good way to do so... maybe noobs could lend a *cough* hand here too...but this might need some wristbands or resculpting of muscles...
Automatically Appended Next Post: shaso you are right a weapon wouldn´t need some support...and the drill is the least kind of this to do...
i worked as a retailer of food...(sorry wrong word propably) and as an entertainer (wore an icebear outfit once^^) worked in a nursery school for half a year, made some logos for a nonproft organization, studied business administration... but mostly i want to work in a profession wher i can help and work with others ... something that might move someone...something that has to do with creativity... but i got no professional backround in that department at all...
Well, I was thinking you could cut the bottom of a shoulder pad off at an angle, that should be about the right size to look like a semi-recessed face-plate pushed over the eyes. Maybe.
And no, the boyz will take it as it is, maybe add a few gears into the shoulder
Hmmm, seems that you could just go with a charitable organization. you seem to have the already acquired skills and talents that could help them along with the desire to help out.
Vik, the one with open helmet is looking much better!
And I would suggest some other positioning of hands to the pre-assembled guy. He looks like a clumsy teddy-bear this way
For the off-topic part - I don't really know what to do with my own life, doing the work i despise I'm not the one to give any advises here, exсept that one should aim to make use of it's talents or find a job related to one's intrests if it's possible.
shaso...wellthis is my current plan incidentally... i have to really get a initaitive aplication onthe way...i really have to...
Vik,,,when the kids are at school, and the wife ius at work, take the time to do it online, or walk to the place or travel, and fill it out! do it! Keine excuses!
one should aim to make use of it's talents or find a job related to one's intrests if it's possible.
that is my aim... but i fear that my talents might be on the non profit side...
doing the work i despise
that is exactly what keeps me from making a good and lasting decision to have an employment...really... i know far too many peeps that do their nightmares jobs but keep on working, lest they might get ruined.... but working a job you hate is pretty much what i come up with when i think of personal ruin...
oh and i like the term clumsy teddy-bear^^ might come next on my desk^^actually i think a termy would make quite a nice base for a teddy...and i would love to make fur....man you just spawned an idea^^

lol....*no one is catching me now when i keep on running...making brutal teddy bears clutching their precious bolters and lasguns....*
harharhar!!!!!
i was searching for quite a long time to make an army for my youngest son anyway... a funny army i wanted to do for a long time too...ha! this will be mindblowing then... at least to my fragile mind anyways^^

I knew that was the next thing to happen with Vik involved!
Well Vik, start by listing the things you are good at, not the things you aren't. Ask yourself what would I enjoy doing? That is what makes someone happy because they are getting paid to do something they enjoy. I have worked in IT for over 15 years now. It was a hobby that I turned into a career. I put myself through 4 years of related college and ended up with a degree in it, but thanks to the greedy Corps and banks, now they want to outsource and sub-contract everything and turn IT people into mc-donalds like workers. SO I know exactly what you mean. It sucks. Shas works in the same field as I do, however, like many of us, he is just stagnated, No way up the ladder, or even across the ladder. It is frustrating for people like us who enjoy taking a business problem and applying IT solutions to it, so we feel that our skills are underutilized and unrespected.
In years past, when I was between IT jobs, I still had to eat, so it wasn't fun, and bruised my ego a bit, but I took a job in shipping and recieving for a crappy store chain. Believe it or not, I enjoyed that sort of work, organizing things, packing them, driving a forklift, etc. It just didnt pay enough to be viable long-term. So I would suggest that you do something that you at least enjoy so that the days don't suck quite as bad.
well, in my four days of holiday without wifi I seem to have missed quite a bit ^^
I'll try and catch up over the next couple of days.
those shoulder pad visors... I've seen them somewhere before... hmm...
at shrike.. yeah done too by me^^ made and army... the iron templars... was an assault marine scratch built with lego bitz and CSM bitz too..:
at dstein...
this even suck more as you had an idea what you like to do and worked your way up to the point were you could work in your chosen profession... this is unfair as the as you stated greedy world made your dreams go down the drain...i think the payment atm isn´t even the major thing to achive in high values... your and like storags view i think is my major thought here... waht do i like to work in... i limit myself but then to exclude so many things i might like as i think no one would pay me for these things...

an old pic soon will follow a new update on the tank...promise!
You know, Vik, you work fast enough that you could probably make some money simply doing modeling work. Get a basic Resin casting kit, figure out a way to modularize what your tanks, and you could probably sell them.
well anvil...i thought about that too...rsiky...and fulfilling too at the same time... like TNT...and i think it would need some tinkering but who knows... that would be a dream come true in an ideal kind of world...doing what you love and getting paid for... sounds almost like a new form of crime^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:well anvil...i thought about that too...rsiky...and fulfilling too at the same time... like TNT...and i think it would need some tinkering but who knows... that would be a dream come true in an ideal kind of world...doing what you love and getting paid for... sounds almost like a new form of crime^^
yeah i was always in favor of some sort of revolution or the other...new economy would be a nice thing to have... every one working in their field of choice and getting waht they need to have a fulfilling living...and lots of automatons that take care of the work no one wants to be making^^

"Space!,,,the final frontier,,These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise,,,,It;'s five year mission, to seek out new planets and civilizations,.,,to boldly go where no man has gone before!"
at shaso... that could be very well situated in a steampunk surrounding...the wording is pretty much as it would have been used for something like that... i currently read a steampunk novell by george mann, the affirmative bridge... quite a nice read...
at hazzer... they probably will be some sort of stormtroopers...or if failing the outfit they work as ogryns...as i am building only a IG steampunk army atm... one day i might feel inclined to finish my SM army the earthangels...
by the way... sorry for the lack on updates... last days was a bit hazy on hobby stuff... maybe i get to do some stuff today...but cant promise for sure...
You know Vik, Anvil's made a point here. That might not be a major source of income in a near future, but a way to make some extra side-money. To tell the truth I'm also aining tho make some proffit of this hobby in several years.
at storag:
well... i have slim to none expierience with casting...could someone here point me out into a dirction as to what is needed for something as tanksized to be casted? what tech i need and what it might cost in the beginning....this has to be considered and i will evn then show some of the facts and your ideas to my wife...(always good to as for permission on such things first^^)
and seeing your stuff mate, i see a promising market for your products...
Oh, make fitted parts of the hull, stacks weapons and treads and turret, make a rubbery mold of them then through a opening(sprue) pour two part resin or epoxy in and you make several copies a mold.
Blackhand has a general casting tutorial up. And the interesting thing about casting, is that it's actually not that expensive to get started. Maybe $40 American for a good amount of mold rubber and about a litre of 2 part resin from Alumilite. Not certain about shipping charges and such, but you could probably cast around for a German supplier.
The big thing is to make certain that what you're casting is cast-able. I started with custom bases- cobblestone and lava/rock/glacier- easy because they have a flat base, and only use a single part to the mold- you might be able to get away with that for some of your tank parts, because you use cardboard and cardstock, and so tend to build with flat inside faces.
But start small- things like sections of those tracks you've made, or little panels made with your hole-punched 'lacework' that you used on your Excalibur. Heck, even various sized plates with rivets would be something I'd buy, since riveting is one of my least favorite activities.
Oh, and it's the Affinity Bridge, for those confused. It's a really good book.
yeah i am halfway through and already looking to buy me the two following ones...depending on the end of the first one^^ i really like the storyline and the small twists and turns in the world of steampunk ...as mann describes them quite nice!
as for casting i think i have to look into some suplieres shortly...your ideas about flat bitz is a good and helpful one! and i was intending to make a second tank shortly anyway...so this built could be planned in that manner beforehand! also i like the idea of preriveted plates you mentioned...that is quite a good idea! guess i have to invest now into some smaller rivetmaking tools...this and maybe getting to make some flatsingle raised tracksystem could be a starting....hmmm...^^
Yeah Vik, if you do some homework and get all set up with your casting workshop, Nothing will be wasted, because every little bit of leftover mold-making rubber can be used to cast small things like rivets and drills, and tank tread shoes..!
well i have not studied business administration for nothing^^ the shortage of good defines the use^^
so i would try to make as much use of any mold as possible...my wife even teached me that with her sewing... when you buy expencive cloth you try to get as much out of every square meter as possible too...well the whole thing seems rather possible...stranger things have happend^^
Okay, I've read through the bits I've missed, and, as usual, good work!
It'd be really cool if you started selling your kits. I have a feeling the steamknight will sell quite well if you paint it up nice and well ^^
I doubt you'll make a living out of it, but it might pay for itself and earn you a bit of cash on the side.
Viktor von Domm wrote:well...we live to serve...^^
Nah, you live to make stuff from what most would consider recyclables or trash even! My roommates would have just tossed those cereal boxes away rather than make models out of them!
well today i actually tossed one cerial box in the garbage bin... my stock is currently way too packed^^ guess what that means^^
by the way... come tuesday my wife and the kids will leave me for three! weeks alone at home... this is some sort of a health vacation... and besides finishing the steamknights in this time...i have planned to build my kids a pirate ship that is matching in scale the playmobil figures...something that they actually can play with... no great paintjob but sturdy as hell is my main goal...project will start on tuesday...

Make sure you have the "all-important" permission chat with the wife before she leaves for three weeks. I think this casting plan is a good one! (Of course, I have no alterior motives for wanting to watch someone start the casting process...)
BTW, you have a paint scheme picked out for your steam knights yet? Are they a side project or will you run them as termies in 40k?
definatly not as count as termies... either they will see duty as stormtroopers or possibly ogryns...i happen to have quite a bunch of termies in my boxes as i started a SM army...they were menat to be aDA off spawb chapter...
well casting wasn´t due in those three weeks...the ship and the steamknights first...that and what comes after this is only speculative at best...
tho an idea of a sort of product range is forming in my mind...
at dstein...ONE ship might be just enough to get me seasick by daydreaming^^
done a bit of work to the steamknights... maybe i get to do some more later on... then i will show you some progress...
One can imagine Viks whole tank collection, steaming away under the black clouds of smoke as they make their way across "No-Man's Land" to duke it out with an enemy armor force.
Hey Mister make anything from rubbish ;-) so making a pirate ship now for your boys ? three weeks of glued fingers.. jealous :-( make sure you leave a week to tidy up afterwards
the ships gonna be made up from pva, wood and cardboard...cross fingers for me for getting it tight...it will be a simple structure with less deatils...but i think the odd rivet will find it´s way...
soonishh shaso i will start also a new tank...
mates i have hard thought about the casting thing and i think this will be done in some time...about years end i will have gathered an amount of foundation and hopefully created a stock of products that might be sold via ebay or a fully webshop... guess ebay first...
simple products that have millions of uses...i too have some ideas already but feel free if you have some additions...
Really like what you've done with the steam knights. If I may add an opinion, though, I think the legs now look a bit weedy. You've really bulked up the torso but not upgraded the leg armour. Terminator thighs are a bit weird, scale-wise, at the ebst of times and I think they would benefit from some additional GS lovin'
I did that with my own terminator conversions and have some pictures in my gallery if you're interested.
i will certainly have a look at your stuff again...even if the referrence is not to be seen, your stuff proved for that project plenty of inspiration...i too by the way thought about the legs and that they might be on the thin side now...
i have thought long how to add fuitable rivets...pins, GS blobs or holepunch plastic rivtes... i want to go shopping in the next two days so i might even go into chopping rivets out of styrene...but hey^^ you all seem to do so nicley with my urges to push you ito riveting your stuff...i figured it all averages out all things consideres^^ you doing more...me doing less...lol...ho fouled ya for a sec?^^
thanks mate... hope your family will have plenty of sweets they can salvage in your neighborhood^^ we will be doing that later on when we have apropriate darkness...the kids are edgy all day^^ one is a pirate and the other is a knight...and no... not a steamknight^^
yup... watched the mini series , and have fond memories about it... the book was a cool one... the beginning even more... i think king somehow crossed a bit my line with his prefference in fecal scenic descriptions... but i guess somehow it was fitting still in terms of a good story... it is still one of my favorite books nevertheless^^ read it during army service the first time and i was doing duty in a anti biohazard/ atomic unit... so you can probably understand what made me shudder on the first pages...the closing of the tunnels in new yourk or the shutting down on radiostations particularly... holy gak your national guard i don´t want to come across in some moments^^

Yep, National Guard can play rough. But yeah, I can imagine with your job in the army over there, that you must have looked at the containers with a bit more care and not just some silly babysitting of bottles.
oh we were not of the watchout department... we have no such things , i hope...we would have been the cleanupcrew when the gak hat hit the fan... litteraly speaking...it was all those gasmasked soldiers shoving around all those civilians or even beating them up...that gave me the willies... i imagined me in such a situation to shoove my next because they just want to live... there can be nothing as severe than a civil war, where neighbor turns to an enemy... or rather you get told that he now is the enemy...if i ever came to do such duties i would rather shoot my officer than commit a crime...
definatly! gas is THE cowardliest invention...further are butterlfy bomb and the H-bomb...
well my family is now on their way to their holiday vacation... leaving me alone with a ton of projects at my hand...
the first one will be to build a pirate ship for my sons pirate urges^^ i will later on go shopping and buy me a shipload of wood...already cut to size from my local DIY store^^ then i will start to work on that ship...
i already made plans for the built... it will have rivets on it... quite a lot actually^^ so i teach my kids the love for rivets then too^^
my other projects will se work done when it is too late for hammrs and saws to be used... so expect some updates today coming your way...by the way... am i allowed to show this built here of the pirate ship? it is for 70mm scale so not really tabletop anymore^^ ...
well then have your eyes peeled to this place^^ i will show you this built then in all detail^^ and finally i have again quite some output to show off^^by the way... even my three year old son is showing lots of gameing potential as he already plays full steam with his brother in roleplaying when playing priates or firemen...^^ so they will be quite a heir to my efforts^^ they are already longing for their own armies^^
Who is to say that you can't game in 70mm? People collect armies of Lego minifigs for wargames. I picked up a $3 mystery bagged Playmobil figure at the store the other day, packaged just like the random Lego minifig. I think that justifies gaming!
funny you should mention that mystery baged playmobil... my son got one on a brithday party just the other day... a sporty guy...lol^^ and yep... almost everything could be used for gaming... ruels could be adjusted to sclae issues and wysiswg would also work^^
made a small pause and will later on work some more with the saw...and i made some pics for you that at least will show you some suply drops^^ that i came to like^^ and some first work outcomes so far...
Automatically Appended Next Post: so sadly this will be added automatically...
here is my first update or better first shots of my current work of building a pirate ship for my kids...the scale will be around 70mm as it is a ship desgined to be played with playmobil pirates^^
to make the build apropriate for my targetgroup... (my kids ranging form 3 to 5 years) i had to choose some sturdier materials than just cardboard...namly MDF...here is my suply drop^^ as requested...
these parts i got for not much money from the DIY store already cut to the sizes i had planned...well planned anyway...as i already found out that i had an error in one piece wrongly measured by me
then i sawed some bits off of the bigger boards to from the hull i inted to make...
and added a hole for later there will be the grating to the storage rooms...
marked are the positions for walls to make the thing sturdier and to separate the storage room so that this room won´t be too big... like so...already glued wall on one deck...
sargent harker and a comanion of his on inspection to the works at the docks...
the beady eye of sarge detects every missmatch^^
and lastly the two decks with walls glued together and now waiting for curing of the glue...
the plan is to add an aftercastel at the portside which will have the steering wheel on top...
next course of action will be the glueing of the walls to the side and then the forming of the bow and the portside... later on i will add cardboard as a detail addition to make it look done with wooden panels...also i am thinking of how to add a mast to the ship...
That's awesome Vik! If you go to a DIY store around here and ask them to cut a 4x8' sheet of something in half for you, just to fit it in the car they look at you like you have tentacles!
well the man at the counter saw my list and pointed out to the regulations... no cutting under 10cm... but i told him he would make me a happy customer and then i drew my suckerpunch card and said it is for my kids... what could he do now^^
17 pieces all together fer now... and i paid under 5 € for all^^
that link is sweet!!! i will try that one out when the kids ar back home... we will have plenty of fun then^^
by the way... loved the joke about the tentacles... and i ever thought you lived in the land of the endless possibilities...
I also have a set of rules called "War Pigs". It is a simple set of rules for using those cheap soft plastic 54mm army guys you used to get by the bucket-load as a kid. It's great fun. I can get you a copy of it if you are ever interested.
how big is the mini count for those? hordes or rather like warmachine? currently we don´t have enough to form a horde army...but i think something like a `munda version would be easy set up...
yeah i know these minis pretty well... we used to burn them with a lighter^^ flamer throwers for kids^^
hmmm^^ sounds very good...the way 40k rules are built i might be too stupid anyway^^ and for getting to play with my kids i think simple rules might just be the right way to start gaming.... so of you have them handy at your side i´d be "game" so to speak^^
oh yeah, I have a hard time playing 40k, too much to remember. I'm always flipping through the pages, delaying the turns. I really hope they make it easier to play with the next edition in 2012 without nerfing the Imperial Guard
well actually whenever they recently brought forth a new edition they made the new codex stronger and powerful than the forces before... so if IG gets a new one they will be good... but if the big book gets redone...ohoh...who knows...i only once played a test game in a GW shop... it took ages and we didn´t even include the koptas and the dread form the aobr set... so just basic units...and it was very much to think about... needless to say i got tabled^^ well almost as we quit the game for time reasons...
hmmm... i think it will depend on who´s army the favore... a marine one i would gather... always marines... one way or the other...ater the recent releases of all those new codicies i think someone WILL bite the dust though...
they can get rid of the stupid Space Elves as far as I care. Or even the Tau. They said the tyranids ate all the squats well....Nurgle can give all the Tau hoof disease and I wouldn't mind! lol
LOOOL hoof desease lol nah you need the elves... IGs woundn´t look half as grumpy if it werent for those frail type of armies like eldar (whichever) and the tau... just marines and orks wouldn´t cut it in my view... and personally... as long as you don´t have renegade armies to battle IG loyals i don´t like to see human fighting human in a sifi context... the dumbest thing one could imagine is two smurfs battling it out between themselves... no you really need diversity... actually i would love to see something totally new really much!
Automatically Appended Next Post: by the way... attached the bigger wall sections already...here are SGT. harker and his assisting private doing some seek and destroying^^
the railings will see some cardboard once the whole corpus is assambled...
i hope so too... that´s the whole point anyway...there so into pirates fighting that i just had to make some helping them to play with... i think it will be a one master... any additions you might feel needed?
OMG! Can you imagine converting 10 of these into a squad of Catachans? It would be easy, the shirt is a seperate piece from the vest...just need to fabricate a lasrifle with a rod for the grip....hmmm
yeah that could be done... they have a winchester gun or the old guns as shown in my pics above...
really this is intriguing^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: also i bet with the new models out there you wouldn´t have to bother much to even get a commissar done to keep them in line^^
*hands starting to shake* oi, i see me some red coats comin`over the hills... come and ´arf a brick at´em...^^
i loved to play with redcoats against my yankees back in the days... i only had redcoats and yankes in uniform back then and wasn´t that inventive yet^^ but that would keep me from normal living for centuries if i ever had the chance to play like this....argh.... what have ye done to me... now i am spoiled...
I don't believe I ever knew that Playmobil madethese historical figs until today. This whole gaming with them is a pretty big thing on the internet. And apparently modding and converting them is nothing new either.

Ah, progress! I would say that rumors indicate the 6th edition of WH40K as a time of Aliens rising, looking at the new Necrons codex is showing signs of preparation for that. Tau will be updated purely in the 6th edition so my skinks in space may yet have a new day in the sun! But new codexi will likely still get stronger. Just makes wins with IG all the more sweet then!
vik- pretty difficult to say at this early stage, but I'll be sure to add in more recommendations as it goes along dsteingas- 40k rocker you say?
*jumps at opportunity to show models*
your rockork looks like his peepee his out in the freaking sunshine...(we all know he has no peepee though^^ and god bless us all for that fact...)
the thing i like about new codizies is the fluff mostly... so let them bring it on i say... we can´t stop them anyways^^ and a fireing line of demolishers will burry everything^^
at dstein... since GS made an apeareance in my life i doubt if anything is at all un-convertable^^ that maksed alien looks stunning by the way...
yeah, i guess that would be the weak spot right there...though if you only thinly sculpt on the hand then you might be set...after all these hands are pretty sturdy as it gets...
i think the sculpter has glued the arms to the side anyways... looks to me like that...
but those minis have lots of potential to them... on that scale you can add plenty of detail...
Viktor von Domm wrote:your rockork looks like his peepee his out in the freaking sunshine...(we all know he has no peepee though^^ and god bless us all for that fact...)
That mysterious lump is, in proper light (like the sunshine ^^) it is in fact a metal skull codpiece decoration thingy.
i just knew you had an excuse for this^^... see everything can be sol´ved with good reasoning^^
at dstein... the only thing that surprises me is that it happend in germany and the guy got sued...normally it wouldn´t have bothered here anyone...well...

lol... odd is the middlename of that thread...er...no it´s shaso´s rather^^
yep i imidiatly thought that might be something for you shaso^^
might be something to consider as ogryns^^
well mates... enough of that banter...fer now...and onwards with new pics of work already done...:
worked on the mast today...and glued the after castel together for at least 3 out of four sides...the fourth is the one i mentioned to you being wrong so i have to get me a new piece soon....same for the top...
for all you can see now you have to see it i think with my eyes as it gets first when completed a coat of thin tissue to even out gaps and stuff and then it gets layered with straps of cardboard for that planky look...
so here are the pics:
oh where is that box coming from??? naww is the boat^^
storage room as a mantrap...
the mast and the lookout...or better crow's nest...
definatly some version of a the jolly roger on the flag... well i actually have some from playmobil but i think after seeing how good shaso did with his PVA soaked flag i think this is a cool oportunity to do the same...on on the crow´s nest and one on the steering deck above the after castel...
i have thought about adding cannons to the built... you know those under deck ones... just poking outwards with their barrels...would it be too unlikley to have those hatches in a round version? this way i could get away by just drilling holes inside the hull and later on detail them with cardboard...what are your thoughts about that?
Aw thanks Vik! Like the surprise for the kids when they get back, now they will see how much extra love you put into their happiness with this home-built pirates vessel!
yeargghhh^^ too true... i hope they like it...and since dtsien showed me those nice uses of some redcoats i have visions of armies stomping on our carpet and brawling it out...^^
Well, his kids are 3 and 5, I'm sure they will love the angled prow! They will cherish that thing long after Vik has gone to the great riveter in the sky.
Besides, it would be hard to bend MDF like that.
MDF is pretty hard to bend, though if he was feeling really extremely nice he'd get some balsa and clamp it shut to bend it over several days (can't remember what the thing you use is called)
the bow will be a bit curvy... i will use cardboard and tissue coated with pva to make the angles less boxy looking.... maybe i even will make a bow out of some more wood... cut it to size and form...depends on how good i am...
well if they cherish it that long dstein depends if they are able to stop sqabbling over their toys...which acording to my wife they have way too much...but on my püersonal expierience ...you can never have too much toys^^
that MDF is by the way 10mm thick... i highly doubt that could be bended at all... not even with a blowtorch^^
that balsa wood would have been a good choce from the start but as i said they are too young atm and thus it has to take quite some punishment...or else the whole work would be for naught....
at rawson... i know it looks atmn like a shoebox^^ but i even want the hull to look a bit curvey horizontal ...hopefully i will achieve this with multiple layers of cardboard...it will be tricky...but then my work usually is^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: soaking or steaming would work for balsa quite good... let us just remember that for a different project...^^
ok guys today i worked some more on the ship...i hacked and sawed and cursed my way through the material and it can take quite some punishment...
i went on and sawed out the window-holes for the aftercastle...well one thing i can assure you is that you have to be sure to saw out such deatils before gluing together that thing.... which i didn´t do so i payed the price^^
we live, we learn^^
also i almost completly glued the bow in place and i try now to make it a bit peaked and facing upright...last piece of the hull will have to be cut in size later on and will see glue when the current work is cured...
What level of detail are you shooting for with this thing? If it's in your scope, I think you should add some little flaps in the sides for the cannons. That would be sweet! And maybe a second, smaller mast in the front. That would also be sweet!
It's always easier to give other people's projects "You know what would be sweet?!?!" suggestions than your own
no i fully apreciate your suggestion... in fact what you see is a very skeleton like look.... later on you won´t have to try to see a pirate ship... you WILL see a pirate ship^^ and those flaps are planned... like they have been pulled open by string or something...all detaiuls have but one limitation, they have to be not be able to be pulled of easyly...that would be possible as my youngsters might test the ships limits in the early stages^^
by the waythe last big piece of the hull is glued on and trying to cure now... tomorrow i will have to get me the top and the entrance section for the aftercastle again as i misjudged the measurement the first time .... a true viktor design from the beginning^^ i have such everytime i start a project...
for the aftercastle i even plan on adding a door on hinges and seethrough windowpanes!!! yeah you read right... i am planning to make them from laminated seethrough paper...better shown soon than described....
Put the sanding wheel on your dremel, it should straighten that hole right out! Of course it would help if you pencil in the straight line to sand to first.
i only have the tools of the dremel...but i think with a regular drill it will work too...the thing is it is already too wide ...so i rather have to sculpt it back again with cardboard and glue...in the end no one will take a notice... but these accident happen to me all the time^^
When I was building that ass-ton of 20mm buildings, I got a lot of the windows crooked. Sometimes framing the window with a square and plumb trim of some type helps to disguise my crooked cuts too. Illusions!
well shaso... no painted pics as such but an update nevertheless... and it didn´t involfe files atm but rather tissue and pva to fill bumps and gaps...
don´t get crazed by the perspective... atm the ship is "standing" on its bum to dry...
that what you see now is the complete bow section of the ship and it is covered with soaked tissue paper with PVA diluted...
this is but the first stage to make an almost even ground for later to be plancked by cardboard cut in plancks....trust me on this it will look good... sadly it would be too messy to show you whats in my head atm^^
well actually i will go out in some minutes shopping to get me something for chopping^^ so still not really time for some finer arts here^^ first brute work then fine skilled work^^
well you might say i am ahead of your thoughts... tho only half... as i have made one of these rivet guns for my riveters...
i am currently uploading a new suply drop for you lot^^ unfortunatly the only shop in my bicycle range was out of stovk... andf their stock at all was a clearance of fiberglass for one... so no styrene again for me...darn...
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and here is my suply drop as mentioned ...
got that whole stuff for dead cheap at a local junkjard shop so to speak... for artists these peeps collect stuff like caps and stuff and old wood and plastic junk to be used for art projects... from time to time i pay them a visit...
the best part is the craquelle medium i got... that alone is worth 10 € or something... well fr the whole bunch here i paod 5 €s and i am quite pleased with that...
these look highly suspicious like artelliery stands for me...
that yellow thing is a picture toy.. you know the things you click and you can watch new pics revolving inside...(badly described...) maybe this will be a command monitor one day...
some new and some old plywood for new models..lighter this time then^^ MDF is quite heavy compared to that stuff...
and some grating i will use for the storage room for the pirate ship...

That's the best kind of stuff. When I was working as a construction inspector I would find all kinds of interesting things on site. All it takes is a little imagination (which is better than "All it takes is a little cash" )
yup^^ tomorrow i will update you on the current developments... i talked to my kids on the phone again and my felix is eager to know about my progress too... my oskar is crazed about the flags i will add^^ he is resolutly pointing out the fact that at least one jolly roger is needed... better make that two^^
well mates time for an update of my current work...
here you see the texturing of the sides of the ship as well as the completion of aftercastel...(basic form that is^^)
the texture of the outer walls was done by layering nine! differnt thick/wide pices of cardboard...i have also done atm the stern of the ship in that manner as well...will show some daylight pics of this section tomorrow...the bow will get a bit tricky i gather...
the top of the castel got a rim to be sitting in place but be also removable to play in good condition inside...
the rpivate looking through the door...and out of the window...and on top you see the door... later on i hopefully will be able to make a kinge of some sort... if all else fails i will by some craft made small ones...or i maybe use some from an old small box i still have collecting dust^^
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: did i mention that the hull will get mannnnnnnnny rivets too?^^
brass it is then! yeah i thought so too... no way around it i guess... i once built a tower with a carpet cardboard roll and for the hinges i used cablebinders... but i think real hinges will look way better...
dsteingass wrote: I'd definately use real steel or brass hinges to hold up to kid's play.
This project is quite interesting. The target demographic requires it to be more durable than most projects, and that makes one think outside of the box...
lol... rawson.. that is definatly needed... my sons will put this baby through quite some strain... so for not making all work in vain i have to use heavy durable but still light enough materials...and for this i have to think up soe new tricks... also as i am a dumb planner i always have to solve homemade problems... like cutting out holes fro widows... after i glued everything in place...happens to me all the time...
No problem! I know hot tough MDF is. Also google sailing ships of the pst and see how to score plank lines to make it look more awesome by scoring them on/off like the images you see there!
yeah i have thought about scoring the planck too... the thing is it is for plymobil... i have to decide what look i am going for later when painted... something i would like to have on a table or on the carpet of the childrens playroom...if the later then playmobil style would be to have single rings of planks all around the hull... if the former then i have to make seperate planks... i guess for my modelers honor... the answer will be pretty simple and yet timeconsuming^^

ship's looking good vik!
So you're gonna go for the individual planks?
*gets tombstone ready*
R.I.P Viktor "Vik" Domm
loving husband
OSD modeller
insane fething father
lol... i hope it is not time for the tombstone yet^^
i think i have to see if i get that done properly... do you think just scoring the already glued on parts will be enough for that?
as for the already glued on parts:
i know of the uneven look...i guess i have to make some sort of "metal" cover over the planks on the corners...they are pretty uneven...and even wobly on sections...
Viktor von Domm wrote:they are pretty uneven...and even wobly on sections...
Unacceptable! Do you know who will be playing with this thing?!?!?
The planks are looking great (except for the aforementioned uneven/wobly parts )! Soon enough your kids' playmobil pirates will be able to sail off into the sunset
i think it will be aplenty...as i will try to add a washer screw look to some sections... after all this is a bigger scale and i would like it to be more detailed if possible...so double your possible amount of rivets^^
this isnt fair! the league of extraordinary riveters are taking over many blogs i need to add some non LoER comments around!! Loving what you have here Vik and we can all understand why you are a forefather of LoER now all you need is a suit covered in rivets
i see a counter leaque forming... i know this will all end up in tears...chibi...tststs---
but rest assured i will add plenty...zillions even rivets to the baby...
shaso: rivet- mas...so lol^^ how do you come always up with such cracked up terms^^
and rogue... just add a tons of rivets to your...whatever and there is still room in the leaque...you know the leaque of extraordinary riveters operates on the modus operandi of the more the merier... specially if it involves numerous rivtes^^
Not a counter league Vik It is intended as a humorous homage to the success of the League, having seen on one thread several short posts made by associates one after the other so that the screen was full of LoER banners!
Viktor von Domm wrote:too true are your words old chum! and would it not sound utterly silly and self degrading to have a leaque of ordinary ducktapers? lol
hey, duck tape is amazing! (though not as cool as rivets)
AWesome Vik! Individualy layed planks is always more realistic that only scribed planks IMO, but your kids will love it either way. It is your madman modeller deep within that made this decision
i am not too sure i will actually scribe the planks on the hull...the thought of ruining these is too frightening atm... but for the decks i just had too... it is after all the direct view to the boat and thus i thought it was needed...
i think if i had made this ship for my little plastic soldiers this ship would habe been completly differntly constructed...
no really you are totally right...and it´s making me cringe to say that^^
honestly i have been considering appling small strips of paper to break up the long lines of planks on the hull...
well you can always feel safe for i am hundreds of miles far far away, so the abducted ducks...won´t get found after you´re finished with them^^
and dstein...the thing i did on the hull is...i first cut out a 9x40cm big pice of cardboard... then a 8x40cm piece of cardboard and then so on up till 1x40cm and then layered them all over each other that you get a sort of stairlike structure...becuase the hullwall is standing straight upright and i wanted to create the illusion of a bulky hull...so i used a trick...now the hull appears to be getting wider the more you look upwards...
Man, take a week off and it takes a day to catch up with vik's thread. Think there was even a picture in there somewhere
Nice progress on the HMS Playmobil. Shaping up very nicely, although I can't help but wonder how it would look with some decent dakka and a few freebooterz runnin' around on it
HMS Playmobil ;-) looks great vik , nice work there , pretty quick these days too , infact it reminds me of an oil tanker , really think you should post it to monkey to get it all orky though how are you dealing with the empty house ?
empty house is in a state of near rotting ^^ as the work is conquering the whole living room^^ so it is quite handy to be alone...but that´s just sarcasm... to be without wife and kids is not my cuppa tea... seriously not!
but i am productive at least while depression lasts^^:
srgt. harker is inspecting the recent messy works in the aftercastel...he is not amused... probably someones going to swing in a light autums breeze for this...
inside of the hull now looks suitable planking in the eye and this helps the sur mood the srgt was in due to the messy aftercastle...
if this work is going further the way i am currently pushing it i think we are a day away to riveting... joy!!! so you can draw fresh breath now^^
That made me lol looks like he is saying bloody Vik look at the state of this , thought he would be done by now! tsk tsk tsk , to ye galley wiv ya , for half a dozen lashes.
yep an empty home is a full head , keep yourself busy and the time will fly though. , i have to go and buy Bailey a video game that comes out today , his money though ;-) , will probably pick up some spray paint for the scenery .
tell me, should i
a) swap it via dakka
b) sell it on ebay UK c) sell it on ebay germany
d) sell it on either ebay and still put it in the swapshop...
the stuff might be worth a euro or two... and i think i need some funds for hobby or RL related uses...
Tried explaining to my 4 year old why his playmobil wasn't that cool looking. Conversation ended with him resolving to build an ork JCB. Great stuff, anyhoo.
ok that´s a deal! i am eager awaiting your concepts... be sure to post it too on shaso´s thread of oddball tanks... i think this might be apropriate... oh and by the way... may i if could use that concept? i had a thing for these old tanks ever since... the tank in the movie... LoEG was one i would like to use as a trooptransprt as it happens...
dont understand what you said vik you should tighten the rivets on your skull sir! jk jk, although i dont under stand this part- "oh and by the way... may i if could use that concept? i had a thing for these old tanks ever since... the tank in the movie... LoEG was one i would like to use as a trooptransprt as it happens..." please repeat my german friend oh and if you could provide a list of league members i need it for my .. project...
as is we are but only four... shaso, dstein, rawson and little old me... but i hope soon will hop on the train too...
the thing is with rivtes you only get one chance... later on either replace them or let them fall off i guess. so no tightening is possible... but proove me wrong...^^
the leaque of extraordinary gentlemen...the movie... it had a short tank sequence in the film... and this tank i wuld like to make for my troopers as a chimera stand in...
oh ok that is a sweet tank, and just in case you where thinking differently i am making a diarama, as i love doing these the best, it involves tanks, the LoER, some..zombies... and a dead blue cat *cough cough* i drew it out and will pop it up when i get a chance, altough i tried to make the drawing where you cant tell what it is that much, now all i need to do is replenish my glue and the bulding will commence!
sounds really cool and i too lovie dioramas... and the ingredients already make it a good thing... only the blue cat gives me some troubles but i guess seeing is believing ^^
the tank or my ship? well mabye both but i have different plans for the ship... i currently build/ sculpt the bow... it is now way more peaked than before... pics tomorrow..and my idea was to make it iron clad... what do you think? like a ram?
unfortinatly or maybie fortinatly while watching my cat sleep next to me while drawing, i feel it would be more of a challenge to sculpt a live cat, and either tonight or tomorrow i will post the drawing so you guys can give me some feedback
Automatically Appended Next Post: ooo a ram on that ship would look sweet
well sort of a ram... no actual ram as i have to make the shape of the hull tuff enough to be able to play with... so if i had something sticking out on the front it would be highly possible to get that first broken off...
yeah, like an icebreaker... the bow will be plated in sheats of iron and painted acordingly...of course this is an ideal place to put zillions of rivets on^^
well you can have your final say in this once you see it... i guess i will be able to show you tomorrow... the things i constructed today will then get the final sheats on and then you can see it...
