Mark Twain is a must read for all. He is one of our great authors.
Masking tape is paper based, so you're getting that paper lantern effect. Try some colored masking tapes and see what you get.
People do in fact develop problems like what you're getting. Some can be very severe, so stop using the isocyanacrylate glues for a while, and let the skin heal. It should not take long if it is a rash/allergic reaction. Otherwise, do see a dermatologist. Worst case, you have to stop using glues like that, or wear gloves of some sort. I know someone who had to. (not me, I just can't take the smell of superglue, but I can use it.)
Since it is spreading, as you wrote, and if it doesn't improve by the week-end, see a doktor. Bitte.
I would say its a reaction to the glue try using gloves and see if it stops, don't hack it off though that would be drastic just scrape of the skin when you see bone stop
Actually, ldd has a point...if you just scrape away the flesh till you see bone you could then do some nice scrimshaw work on the finger bones, much more of a manly man thing than some poncy tattos or piercings.....

Tattoos are for wimps blades are for MEN !!!!!

Vik what kind of lighting have you used by the way ?
You even have a proper health care system, here a visit like that may cause someone to go bankrupt, but people here are stupid and are convinced to vote against their own best interests by corporate spin doctors, a non - medical doctor who'd rather see your finger fall off of infection and rot for profit. #murica
dsteingass wrote:Maybe you're having a reaction to the glue? If you take a Benadryl (and then a nap) will that help maybe?
had a look...it seems that medicine /crème is not that easily accessible here... seems I will have to visit a dermatologist ...
Theophony wrote:How long have you had the rash/discoloration? Might just be a reaction like Dave said, but if it's going on for a while I think it might be something else.
Either way it's a perfect chance for you to take a photo and let dakkadakka see your middle finger.
well...to be honest it is a skin condition that flares up occasionally...and then can completely disappear for days and weeks... I have for about two years this itchy and sometimes even wet condition... it is quite ugly at times...maybe I take a pic ... but I will need to open a nurgle related thread before then^^
monkeytroll wrote:Yeah, possibly the glue, sometimes can cause reactions with sensitive skin. Is it causing any pain or discomfort?
You could always just hack it off with your trusty xacto if it looks like it's spreading
well... funny you should mention cutting it off.... you wouldn´t believe how oft I have thought about gnawing it off...honestly...the itching can be quite intense.... one must of course now ask why I haven´t already been to a doc... well as I said it comes and goes... so when it isn´t there you think all is nice and you don´t make an appointment... but when it is there you have not enough free time to actually see this through... and I am a bit squeamish around docs... they tend to cut off bits for no apparent laymen´s reasons
inmygravenimage wrote:Almost certainly an allergic reaction, indeed.
well... I am not entirely sure... but in the end it needs a doc to look over this...

So misread this , I was picturing Vik with an xacto hand now like Bruce Campbell army of darkness
"Good Vik, Bad Vik, I'm the one with a number 11 xacto blade "
that probably needs a photoshop mockup

I have experimented with washes and different paints to get a colored version of the paper lantern effect... all natural it works, but once colored it is ruined... and I think I am only recently warming up to new authors... weird I know... my education never was set to get me motivated to read the classics... and since I've found in terry pratchett my author of choice to provide me with humor and education and others... I haven´t been up to look for new stuff... I know now that I will soon start with some classics tho... recently we came across moby dick...(here in school this is not a must- read like in the US...and some twain will be needed too...!)
as for the skin... well it isn´t for one the isocyanacrylate associated as I seldom use any super glue... currently only plastic glue of revell...and that actually shouldn´t cause this reaction...and as I said above... it is an on/off situation for about two years now......yeah I know... will see a doc ^^
lone dirty dog wrote:I would say its a reaction to the glue try using gloves and see if it stops, don't hack it off though that would be drastic just scrape of the skin when you see bone stop

totally with you mate on that... there is a couple of needful things like communication, health, culture and feeding I think should actually be free for every human being... but the pushers and misers out there are making a hefty dollar for charging us for everything except the fresh air... if they would have their way with us it would be just like total recall...if you know what I mean...

and to show even here what I have been up to the last moments...:
Firstly nice working bridge getting technical now and what basis is this being used with.
Now just a thought but maybe keep some kind of record every time the rash and itch flares up, that way you might be able to work out what is causing it.
Brigde is coming along great, but I'd rather see proof of your upcoming doctor's appointment now!
(If the rash comes and goes, take a few pictures of it in case - as it usually happens - it is gone when you get to the clinic! And don't forget to mention the dish-washing gloves either, rubber and latex can provoke allergies too)
Yeah, I was just thinking some plasti-card for the base, make some banks, for country road or maybe sidewalks for city scape, then I see the drawbridge and think, "I got no chance!"

as Red Harvest said in the competitions opening speak... you should try something you haven´t tried before... my wife told me it would be the time to work with round shapes... so thus I have made the roof of that wagon round...
that piece is probably the last piece of a train I am currently working on... a steampunk train of course... whether it will have tracks or not remains to be seen... a land train is also something that has quite some appeal to me...
and this is what will be the next piece of said train...:
this is a cheap toy I got from a fleamarket... and I wont use all pieces as the locomotive was way too wide... but the fender will be used and the other parts will be used eventually on other projects... as I want to use lego cart wheels for the whole build...

Nice job on the train carriage you really are lifting the game these days and your commitment needs to be congratulated as well.
The rail is a very detailed piece have you considered doing a canopy over the balcony section ?
You have way better flea markets than we get around here unless you can find a great conversion that requires old garden tools
Oh Vik...you're opening a wonderful can here! That wagon is mnd-blowing, and the wheels you have promise such wonderful things to come with the engine!
So anyone else hear "Peace Train" while perusing this page.
Nice Idea Vik. ANd love the extra bits from the flea market. Reminds to me to hit up the local dollar store sometime for, er supplies. I'll need to take a mock up of a vehicle though, for scale. I need some construction vehicles for the table.
I don't know wether you just save up all your pics till and post them all together or if you are just a crazily fast builder, with great quality as well!

cheers, vik(off as I need to run to my sons school now...)
As to the dilemma of the engine the only thing I can consider is maybe reducing the size of the front engine section, maybe a smaller tube it might change the aesthetics a little but might give you more space to play with as to height.
These rivets you speak of are they readily available as I don't think I have seen these I will send a you PM concerning the canopy issue
well, the tank of the engine is a scavenged pop up ice popsicle... and the curved half sphere at the front was my instant idea to make that steamtank from...hmmm....

Why not Belpaire firebox? meow~
the above shown boiler won´t be used for that project as it is way too wide... but will be eventually put to good use in future endeavours for sure...
I am always working with what I have...and what I am capable of... also my work is always some kind of weird mix between homage and mockery...... so with my rather insufficient knowledge of real technology I am leaning more to mockery probably of anything I am doing here ... I did however a quick google picture search of "Belpaire firebox" and that was quite educative! so thanks lone cat!
I was about to say, but you thought of it yourself first. Who says that smoke stacks have to be upright. Coming out of the side or back would be cool. Think of the american hot rods that have the exhausts right out of the engine rather than out the back.
Yes its steampunk after all standard rules don't apply I kind of like the idea of them running down the side of the engine maybe raising slightly to clear the cab compartment after all you don't want the driver to get steam burn
Found these pics and thought they might help to inspire

Oh yeah, you can let the imagination go wild with the smokestacks on this- you could even imagine a tech that eliminates the smoke all together if you want
Even on real locos, as long as the smoke escapes above the driver, it can be small
Wow I've missed a day and so many cool pics from Vik. Plus all these ideas that are being posted too. The smokestack should be near the conductor and it should be vented through a pot bellied stove so the drive can cook meals on the way to/from where he's going. Bridges coming along nicely too Vik.
I love how so many of those fantasy trains shown are, in a way, what steam locomotives probably would have ended up evolving into if the Diesel Electric hadn't squished them.
Gas-fueled boilers and incredibly complex and efficient heat, water and energy reclaimation systems, packaged in smaller and smaller, more and more compact interconnected and interlinked bundles off machinery.
Well, I think plenty of others have already mentioned it, but side venting exhausts a la hotrods would be a good look. Some great pics from Dave and dog there...saved into my inspiration folder.

Just returned to dakka after a whíle, and I find the riveteers as busy as ever! It is pure entertainment to watch your creations. Man, that toilet... bleargh...
Blimps, trains and tanks. Viktoria travels in style..
I am just thinking first a squad of parade uniform rough riders with small pendants (Praetorian style), then a brass band (all steam-powered walking automatons of course, like sousaphones on legs playing themselves), then Sabre Rider on his robo-horse, next some even more polished-up rough riders carrying a huge imperial banner, surrounding a small troupe of lametta-guys (the Imperial Herald and his goons), then a self-propelled HUUUUGE stage-coach-style steam carriage covered in gold, coats-of-arms, trumpet-playing puttos, baroque swirls and acanthus, on top some big-moustachio livree-style guy with an enormous ceremonial bull-whip, next to his twin with a post-horn, on the back four to six smallish livree guys trying not to fall from their small platform while looking dignified, then steam powered sentinels, even more rough riders, steam tanks, carriages with entourage ad libitum...
And here is another variant of Franco-Crosti-boilers, this loco was elected to be the ugliest steam engine ever by the writers of a certain railway compendium. Now I think this is not fair, but just because there are lots of even more disproportioned tryouts out there on the rails...

Look at the First All-Metal war vessel. USS Monitor, (Also the first 360 degree traversible turret vehicle). .... smokestack can be THIS short. 'steamtank / LandMonitor' can also have short smokestack that doesn't obstruct ballistics.
The C.S.S. Virginia was actually first in action when it steamed north and sunk the U.S.S Cumberland and U.S.S. Congress Mar. 8-9, 1862, however the Virginia/Merrimac was also technically a wooden ship, covered with iron, where the Monitor was all-iron. Either way the battle was a slugfest, neither being able to sink the other. The Confederates packed it full of dynamite and scuttled her rather than let her be captured.

as you see...hot rod style I went for ... and indeed for a sec today I marvelled how it would look with tank treads... but the coach wheels are the look I want to work with some more... a big wheel option wasn´t possible as I currently can´t get a hold on bigger and still matching wheels...

Nice work mate and turned out better than I thought you really pulled it off and I knew you must have a few knocking around still
Also I am holding judgment on the steam stacks at the moment maybe to see it progress a little more, I will be honest as I have 2 concerns with them : 1 they seem to be crossing over which seems a little messy I think they would look better if one ran above the other rather than over hanging. 2 the size of the tubing have you got anything slightly thinner, that way you could do 3 stacks running inline just a thought
O yes they can't produce that train as a kit if you look it has pipes and parts of the boiler/tank from the chemical plant terrain kit on it along with GW tank wheels, don't think it would take long for the lawyers to come calling
One thing you might want to look at is how everything flows in the model. Right now, it's looking a little disjointed between the smooth curve of the boiler, the sweep back of the cowcatcher (that's what the little ram thing on the front is called, by the way) and the slightly aggressive swoop forwards of some of the other parts.

Well I think the point is you have to decide if the look suggests pulling power or velocity. The blocky basic design cries pulling power to me, not velocity, while the slim hot-rod exhausts look like speed. Maybe look out for tractorpulling machines, not for drag-race hot rods to find a suitable arrangement with your exhausts?
Also to look convincing as a land train you need to modify the exle configuration. Your six-wheeler is definitely designed for rails. It needs to look like you could navigate it - in other words like you can turn the first axle. At least move it more forward, and make it look like it is separated from the main frame. Also to enhance the look of power, you might consider make the four hind wheels look bulkier, surround them with a broad iron band with profile on it. See what I mean?
But I totally dig your idea of a six-wheeled land train locomotion, and as usual your build will be fantastically hilarious in the end!

and you are right of courser about the pipes....that´s why I have RIPPED them off^^...instantly today morning after reading this... I still had a bit of free time before work...see below what has become of the train now...

hmm...good point... it is not really built for velocity... so pulling... just like your average train... it is also a four axle engine... but I will not be able to fix the wheel look as the axles I don´t really like to change the positioning here as I have drilled the holes from side to side and changing something here would probably endanger the structure...
tell me how you are now standing to the new pipes...

funny how this train of the doc yet never has shown up... but be sure it is "floating around my head the whole time nevertheless!!!
Totally rocks now plus the engine flows much better visually, the smokestacks are more fitting, neater and pleasing to the eye I also like the coal compartment at the back of the cab.
Great update Vik plus I like the way you raised the middle stack slightly, what have you got in mind next
I'm totally with dog on this. Also the flap valves on the smokestack are great!
Now about the steering issue, as on the last pic there were only six wheels on it I hadn't registered there was a fourth axle. But still no prob, look out for "articulated"steam engines. (german: "Gelenklokomotiven". The "sächsische Schmalspurbahn" have lots of examples to offer. Divide your drives in two double-axle sections, and just hint at the gap between front frame and back frame. In real life you also don't always see the gap.
Now imagine chains running from the front cylinders up to the drivers cabin, to be pulled in order to steer the front frame around. Like lokomobiles often had chains to direct the front axle:
What do you think?
(If you haven't recognized yet, I'm kind of steam engine enthusiast. No steampunk for me, I am too much of a steam punk... But mostly, i have made the experience in order to design something fictional that looks like it MIGHT work the solution is nine out of ten times to look for something similar in real life. Even if it is completely nonsensical it reminds the viewer of something that works - or in case of more esoterical designs, something someone at least thought it WOULD work at one point...)
I like the angles you have gone for on the smoke stacks. Having the second at a different angle to the first look great, almost as it is spreading its wings

The first locomotive you've shown is called 'Mallet'. Tis one appears to be logging or mining locomitive. It was designed to work on mountainous area.
This is my most favorite Mallet meow~

If I recall the Mallet was designed for routes with lots of long tunnels - the design narrowed the cab and improved crew visibility greatly. There weren't very many of them built and they fell out of favor for EMD diesel "tunnel engines" that resolved the issues of smoke, visibility and clearance. Interestingly the EMD engines worked so well that they are now the standard power unit in most North American locomotives, starting the the GP7 "geep".
hey mates... i have been away due to a lack of time and energy... just started my last internship for my apprenticeship to become a nursery nurse...
well atm I am working at a school... with a small bunch of newly enrolled pupils... and also my wee oskar is turning out to become a great oskart, as he too enrolled into school just a mere two weeks ago...
well...this means our family life changed a wee bit (the chaotic bit^^) and I was a bit too drained to be here at all...well...I am back again...
but first I have to announce the big supply drop I got from Camkierhi! my price for taking part in the last LoER terrain competition...
and he was so generous to include a whole set of Dr H´s finest bathroom items... so I think I need to make a small homage terrain piece soon^^
or to put in another way...:
thank you CAM!!!!
everything arrived in mint condition and I was totally surprised!... so much cool stuff ... my head is already spinning on what future project I will use all this....
as to the current project ... I have today worked a wee bit on the bridge and maybe tomorrow I will be able to show you some small progress....
yeah, that bridge looks very convincing. - But I fear you will have difficulties in bringing the train and bridge together, because of the extreme ramps. I have a feeling you wont be able to place the train on it while cobbled together...
Well Vik its been a good while hasn't it .. Really liking your paneling and inverted rivets technique - the train looks fabulous by the way .. you really have become expert at scratch building mate .. great to see.
inmygravenimage wrote:That is a seriously impressive bridge mate. Kudos indeed!

it´s very high on my agenda... very high...!^^ as for the quality top notch and they feel very smooth to the hand... assembly will be a pleasure... but I fear the sink and its wheels^^

ach...me bleeding aching heart... you put the finger straight on the shameful spot... you are of course right... not even the steam engine will be able to cross the bridge... the wheels will never touch the bridges ramp as the first wheel is too far behind so that it will never be able to drive upwards...sadly... so another vehicle is needed now... I am still holding on to the bridge... but I think this one needs a tracked vehicle to be able to drive over...well... plans are being made but I am most thankful for telling me the truth mate!
M0rdain wrote:Maybe its also a skimmer so can take the bridge with ease?
well... I've tested it and it wont do... but fear not the steamengine wont be for naught... it will be used for something else then...

mates... fear not... I am still with you... lurking is a foul surrogate...I need to find the chance to be here again more regularly...I really need to....
to compensate you for the long silence ...again... I will show you the current status of the bridge... currently only bluetaced (thank you cam for these! ) I present the fully working bridge....still not fully riveted... but you get the idea...the counterweight by the way is filled to the brim with iron nails...the only one thing that puts on some weight intense enough and fits in a small container....well... next one will have lots of rivets to show....
the mechanism works by shifting the counterweight back inside the lifting arm...
Thats one nice looking bridge I also noticed the framed cutting map good idea that shame about the train issue for crossing the bridge mind O well gives you an excuse to build something else to cross it
Well maaaaybe there is a way to bring the bridge and land train together nevertheless! hey mates...sorry again for the long silence...again... but I have been busy ...busy in hobby terms... I am reaching the finishing line in terms of construction...and the below following posts of all you made quite some impression in my most recent works...but more to that after the replies...

yeah... Dam that was quick I don't know how your doing this of late but you just keep churning out the PC models nice tank and like the Ping turrets always look great and it will have no problem with the bridge not with those tracks.
What did you use for the chimney section
Hey after your cool little grot tank you got me to actually start building one of my own almost complete as well .......... Almost
Yeah also like the tank, reminds me somehow of french Renault FT17.
And things like that your workshop just spits out when needed... not bad, not bad! When will you build a steamtank in 1:1?
Because of the overall proportions, the small dimensions, then there is this relative high rising cockpit btw, turret, of course the old-fashioned uncovered tracks (not to speak of rivets)... and this unique tension regulator on the side of the tracks looks to me a bit like a part of a steam engine gear.
again I have been away way too long... and awfully quiet too... but I have been not lazy... mind you....definitely not!
due to nerfests new painting and modelling competition which is this time themed for sin city...I have had a bad case of inspiration hit me...

funny how I often fall in love with non german tanks... somehow very few german ones ever made it to my favourite list... the Renault one sure is on it... even if its shape more calls out for a grot to be sitting inside than a man... which is also saying something for RL...that is a rather small one...

I am sorry I have recently yet again cut short on the banter... you don´t know how I miss this too... my wife liked the cons the most too... ^^
at dave... you wouldn´t believe me how feverish I have searched for the head... even tho I still had to do GS on it too... I remembered it but didn´t knew where it was... so I had to sieve a ton of bitz... usually my stuff is organized and sorted... so a full sorting box of different heads... but I found it finally in a big unsorted box full of bitz... well... always fun to play with bitz... but if you want to stay focused... bummer...
werrlll... it started as a good sorted collection... but since I try to get bitz boxes via ebay from time to time...chaos rears its ugly head...(pun intended...^^)
Dam as I mentioned on the Nerdfest thread nice work indeed you and Cam are my favourites to win, I liked the snow effect of J-paint but did not really get the sin vibe with the mini as I did with you and cams.

As to the head storage issue get these work a charm
I really love the streetlight. It subtle and works a treat. It's great also that the grey scale has given you more confidence - so now, more! Cool cons, too

Well, I've only been a judge twice... it's just that it's been on the last two competitions... I can still comment on technical matters, even as a judge, as those sort of comments help everyone (and I try to add those sort of comments on the competition thread so that everyone sees it). I just can't say whether what you are doing is a good idea or not (layout, colours, etc...).
As for the Nerdcademy piece, as a fellow competitor, I can comment. Good job.
You seem to have pushed yourself with the painting and done a good job of it, so keep going with that. Only criticism I can see at the moment is that he doesn't really seem to be holding the gun in his right hand quite right.
at LDD...well... funny thing...I have a sorting box that reminds me a lot of your pic... full of different and extremely sorted heads...just due to hoarding stuff gets not sorted into the box as often as it should be... talk about clever plans and so on
at Dr. H werrrlll... I wasn´t too chuffed about the bolt pistols to begin with... then the cadian gunner arms aren´t also the best to play with... in the end it went soso... so you´re probably right about the weird pose...and dave is too... but the judges have to decide^^
at shaso... when I did some research for this comp clive owen was my instant inspiration... so the red shoes was a must... besides...he´s probably this way the manliest interpretation of Dorothy around the world wide web
at graven... thanks for the compliment about the grey scale...it is something I should invest some time more too... there is some interesting potential in this kind of painting... (the saving on different hues of paint is only one...)
well... in other news... since the nerdfest comp is over... now is the time to wrap things up with the league of extra ordinary riveteers terrain competition...
it was about roads... if ye lot remember... and I made a lifting bridge for it... since we are not supposed to show our final pics in the comps thread... well I am still allowed to show´em here......
which is now happening:
this is the final piece...(es)...
complete shot...
as you see this is a small () scene ...a Victorian steampunk tank is trying to cross the lifting bridge over a small river...
but suddenly a tall and lanky looking rusty robot aka a the steampunk equivalent of a bridge troll is having issues with that intention of the tanks driver...
here come more detailed shots...:
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
bridge lifting...
closed...
counterweight...
resting point
river....(yes I know it is all broken and looks like ice...wasn´t my intention... was how the makeshift way made the water turn out...)
note: the bases are specially made for that whole entry... so all is my entry... (the surface of the water was made with a very thick coat of varnish...and the ground underneath is made from pencil sharpening wood...mashed up with a crude helping of PVA...and paint...)
and then some detail shots of the troll robot and the tank...:
tank
Spoiler:
and the robot...(internet cookie for the fella who can tell what toy got converted for this model^^)
Spoiler:
(mind you...there is are yet no WIP uploaded of this whole project...well not that many... but none of the robot...had to keep it a secret^^...)
well...here is hoping it will help me all in all to establish a good footing in the comp again...
Love the bridge, the steel work is looking fabulous. And a working mechanism is awesome. The "Troll" is just fantastic, a proper "Robot" perchance. And to top it off we are treated to a very impressive Vik special Steam tank.
Good luck in the competition my friend, it's pretty tough, but your right in there bud, awesome work.
Well you excelled here Vik and where to start ............. I guess the bridge first and what more can I say than Riveting and it works which is even cooler
The thing I like about the steam tank is the simplicity to its design and regalness, it seems to have been built to provide a specific purpose but clothed in a regal scheme.
Now that robot troll is a nice touch especially the hammer, now it kind of reminds me of 2 things 1 Robots the CGI animation movie or the Iron Giant which or it could be and probably is something completely different.
A steampunkrobobridgetroll... I never know, should I envy or pity you for your mind, Vik? You were right, this is really something I totally dig! Listen closely, all your competitioners: doom DOOM DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!
steamtroll punk for the win . Great work as always vik. We miss you around here, but you keep popping back up with shear awesome when you get time. Love the idea, now you just need to do the rest of the fairie tales in steampunk fashion for other board sections. You can even have a yellow brick road intersect this road further down the line
thanks you my friends for all that high praise...even if it was again not enough to have to judges smile on my behalf...well... one comp down...(make that two...as the nerdy one I also didn´t win...:( )
but well... one thing ends and another thing starts...namely the 12th leagues terrain competition... this time hold by a true crazy and creative mind: Monkeytroll...and his theme for this round is walls... the title says: "wall me up/ fence me in..."... well... for now I have decided to choose for the former... and I have begun to build some walls...
carved foam, round corners have a cardboard centre, the roof of the wall sections will have a metal sheeting that will be covered in verdigris...
on the pics you can see, the whole structure is already wide and spacy enough to hold a rhino inside...as the title of the comp reads "walled me up/ fence me in..." I think the centre needs a fitting eye catcher...we´ll see about that...
hope you´ll like...(I am also thinking of making a second more modern looking wall/fence terrain set as I think you can never have too much of these kind of terrain pieces in your collection...
Maybe you could make more sections for this wall system that can be swapped out, do some damaged sections maybe! Could be swapped out in game for when they are blown up in game?
Thats really impressive Vik if you ever do any more corners can you do a step by step as that is really amazing work the detail of brick is nice with a dash of paint it will really pop out
Having found a clear spot with excellent fields of view Tech-Sergeant Godberry set the machine spirits to overwatch and joined his brethren for a few hours down-time in the back of their trusty rhino. Upon popping the hatch in the morning he was astonished to find they had been enclosed by a structture of bricks and mortar...
"Command, this is Rhino 6. Were you aware that we were encamping in Doozer territory?"
The doorway is crying for two beefeaters flanking it. Behind the walls have been torn down particularly by artillery, some astartes have driven their apc throug the gape and are now taking cover behind the bricks before they storm on, shells convert more bricks into shrapnell, but those two sturdy sentries have order to guard the entrance to her majesty's appleyard, and by jove, they are taking their order seriously!
I hope you are feeding them well*... and none of this, "it puts the lotion on its skin" silliness either.
*And proper German foods too. Lots of Bratwurst, Eierkuchen, Kartoffelpuffer, and of course, Pfannkuchen (Ich bin ein Berliner, ja?) and plenty of Weihenstephaner beer.
Vik mentioned elsewhere that he is getting hammered in RL. But a winter break/recess ought to be coming soon. German schools permit such things? I have no idea.
...looks like a good opportunity to have the mice dance on the table, while the cat is away... let's degenerate this thread with something SHOCKING, something OBSCENE, something only to be mentioned whispering behind cupped hands... with a swift look if a MOD might come around with lock/bann, cause this place is no longer acceptable...

Hey Vik has been around, he has uploaded images to his gallery:
Spoiler:
Even a stone tower can have rivets, none of this welding nonsense
If he has been too busy to post about his latest project, well we can let him know how awesome it is anyway!
Vik that brick work (pressed in) and the stone work around the tower is awesome, when you have time, I'd love to hear how you made such clean straight lines.
Yeah, nice tower, you seem to indeed have set "brick" on "brick", did you?
also nice champion of Khorne your seedling has crayoned. Coupla years and he'll do cover artwork for "Greed Worship" for sure.
noodles!!! I wasn´t yet too confident to show you all!
well... you caught me^^...
of course it has rivets...no welding...never...ever...
the tower is kind of an inspired follow on work after I have worked and finished the walls...for the current leagues comp...
unpainted pics of the walls... with rivtes... of course I will present to you later on...
I am currently in the middle of painting the walls and the tower... the verdigris effect tho is giving me a hard time...for unknown reasons I can´t get a good hue ...
and since we are all so cosy around the bar...I want to build some guards... standing like earlier on suggested as true beafeaters at attention... has anyone ever tried to do this? I would love to use cadian bits and suchlike as I have some spare legs and torsos for this job... but before I use the saw in a terminal way I would love to see how someone else has mastered that feat...
and thanks for your constant confidence in me and my work...mates... I hope to crawl out of this slightly dark valley soon...to fully rejoin these pages here for real...!
cheers, vik
and the pics won´t be that far away...promise!
(p.s. the tower is made from a present of cam...he sent me recently a cardboard tube of huge dimension... I used the whole tube for this build... an old lamp piece for the roof... and lots of foam cut up as stones....for the towerwalls, the buttresses and other parts got the knife and pen treatment to create the bricks...and lots of PVA... each stone on the tower was glued into place...if you mastered riveting once... glueing stones is just a mere side- obstacle^^)
And the master calls to us from beyond the far reaches of mist and time and shows us the error of our ways with this massive er.... tower.
Can't believe you Ninja'd me.
Verdigre... sponge on striking scorpion green then skink blue, add a very light sponge of copper over the top witha few washes is my method, but Noodle is a master at this.
Also Noodle could be your man for the Beefeaters, You probably want to look at some Fantasy Imperial models, Noodles Genswick troops are not a million miles from being close to it if painted gawdy red and gold.
That is impressive scale and detail you have become a real dab hand at this since you have been lurking behind the scenes, I like the ground section with the supports running up the sides that was an interesting design choice and looks marvelous
The lamp shade trick was a clever idea what is it made of by the way as it looks like grey plastic, most shades I have seen are really thin white placky type stuff but that looks way more sturdy
I was impressed by the walls you did and now even more so great stuff Vik and you were scared to show this
Great tower. The stairs are really cool. Of course we want better photos too. My first impression was that you had used a Pringles can (Pringles Potato Chips... or crisps(?) on your side of the Atlantic.) They make perfect tower bases too. Plus, potato chippy goodness. Mmmmm, all win.
The roof has a certain Christmas tree look to it. Perfect for this time of year
The Vik has been lured out of hiding , let's hope he didn't see his shadow of he'll crawl back into his lair and not come out again for weeks. although if he does he'll bring marvelous designs such as this christmas tree topped tower.
It needs lights... Or a star or an angel on top. Oooh, a windvane would be perfect, come to think of it,
How would something like that look atop the tower?
I knew you were around If you are going to leave pics around for a week someone is going to find them sooner or later
looking forward to more of the walls.
My verdigris isn't that great, best tip I can give is lots of thin washes. Mix a bit of green, blue and white, in differing amounts then apply as a streaky wash showing the direction water would take flowing down with the occasional black or brown wash mostly for shadowing and grime.
I found a site with pictures of weathering bronze or copper at each stage, one week, month, year etc. I don't remember where it was but I found it pretty useful.
For guards, the old IG tank upgrade sprue had a pair of standing legs and an arm with it's hand in the air, that should be easily convertible to make it holding a lasgun to attention.
Good use of bits! I honestly couldn't tell what that roof was made from.
well mates... I am still able to use handles... even tho someone suggested replacing my fingers with knifes...
and the shadow didn´t scare me that much... also... no long shadows currently due to the low sun and the less appearance of said stellar entity...
at red harvest... oh... what a very good idea... I need to see if that is still possible... it would be a very convincing addition regarding towards the intended use of the tower...
the letters might be a tad tricky to get them right on that scale....hmmm....
at noodles...
My verdigris isn't that great
yeah right... your probably the best painter here to do verdigris effects in my humble opinion...
as for the guards... I have begun to sieve my bitz box already... I currently follow two roads... ordered my a sprue of necrons my the way so that if all else fails me I will make aitomatons for guards... but the tank commander guard is a very good start...
in the end I want to make cadian standard guards tho as I have in my mind already dioramas planned with lots of soldiers standing at attention... also marching after one another too...
at graven... a broken bell?... it is no bell tower...mind you...^^ it will be for an upcoming airship...ups... now it is out^^
at LDD... the lamp piece is actually metall...IKEA lamp like this...:
you see the piece in black that holds the bigger shade...
sooooo.... promised some wip paining pics...
first the walls... as this is the main event...
this is the setup I mostly think about... but as the pieces are fully modular setups like the following are also able to be used in game...:
and some individual shots of the walls...
and here comes the first wip painting pics of the tower...
with additional pics for details...
...
well... I have again my difficulties with the scheme for the bases... this was in all the recent comp entries my weakness...
the bricks will get a more individual colouring later on... to make it more convincing looking... I also want to add a bit of pant life to the walls... (following Dr. H´s continuous hints which I too often continuously didn´t follow...I hope this time will help me to actually achieve a spot on the first three places...)
for the guards I will hopefully get during this week to be able to present to you some wip pics...
cheers, vik (who is very glad that you are all there and still enjoying the show even if the episodes happen in a rather random style time wise )
did you see the long card tube in the tower cam?... the instant I opened my package back then I knew it would either end as a tower or a new airship...
the tower now it very sturdy due to said tube... so...again...thank you matey!
also... as a sidenote... the way I did these stones on the tower I don´t recommend... I should have done them in the same size as I did all the other bricks... that will kick myself in the rear every time I will lay eyes on the tower....... tried to change it before painting... but it wouldn´t look right...learn from me^^...
I see the part you are referring to in the pic hope you did not break the lamp for that reason
Nice paint job could do with a little weathering especially being that tall, what are you doing with the window frames by the way ? over great stuff and just love the wall sections multitude of set ups possible
Bases really are not a necessity, Vik. At least not permanently attached bases. Try constructing buildings as you would vehicles, without bases. Now, a bit of ivy climbing the brickwork on both the walls and the tower... You can used yarn that has been thinly coated in PVA glue and dipped in flock for vines too.
Walls looks nice. Loving the tower. For letters, perhaps slice off the raised lettering from a pill bottle top or other source? ( I could post a pic or two of what I mean if needed.)
Good work on the tower, Vik. The brickwork is nice and the roof is a great use of the part.
Yeah, have a think about how dirt, rubbish and plant-life will accumulate about the base of the tower.
At least I can keep going on about it this time and not have to wait until the judging.
I think I will leave this here for every ones personal amusment...:
of course there will be soon lots of GS used on that guarding guardsman...
question tho... if I would have two guarding guardsmen flanking the portal of the tower or a gate... would the lasguns be on opposite shoulders or be on the same shoulder , what does the military code say to this guarding problem?... this needs to be answered and I need to have this answered by the knowing friends of mine maybe how done service and so on!... thanks in advance...

the lamp died a natural death... unfortunately... so it needed to be replaced...spending money on lamps is not as funny as spending it on plastic crack... weathering will happen!

well... I agree , bases are not a needed detail... but the construction wouldn´t stand upright otherwise...so... but I was thinking about some vines and stuff...I have some stuff that yerns to be used^^...

it is a blessing to have you here for once to be able to be of assistance in the process^^... by the way... your feedback I have still with me...it is a source of guidance for my current project!
if this works out... I want to make more of these... maybe I find a way to use the dark arts even to have my own supply for a whole platoon standing at attention... next step would be marching legs...ach... a man needs to be able to dream...
Not sure what regulations are, but I'd imagine they are all holding the rifle on the same side of their body like when they are drilling. I'd also think it would really only be the close combat weapons that would be held towards the doorway side if the weapons were large enough to block the entrance, like halberds.
The side where guards hold their weapon is not depending on which side they are standing, Both guards will have their arms on the same side. If you look up pictcures of the Swiss Guard you will recognize they always hold their halberd in the right hand, regardless where they are positioned. (couldn't find a pic with two guards bearing halberds flanking an entrance, sorry) The side your weapon is positioned is solely a question of weapon drill. Originally these stances were trained in order to 1) make thinking while handling your weapon under attack superfluous, and 2) coordinate the handling of then-quite long pikes or muskets in a cordon, so nobody would clash their polearms or gunbarrels together. If a doorguard were to take action, it would be desatrous to have to think flipside.
Blocking an entrance with crossed polearms is just showing-off btw. If you had to guard a door with a halberd in ernest, you would lever the polearm foward to more easily reach out with levelled halberd in both hands and keep the intruder at bay on tip, if he further advances. not hold your weapon sideways so the intruder can just tackle you, making the polearm useless.
So why are there pictures of english guards with their gun on different sides? and even more strange, while standing in a guardhouse, alone? This is just an intelligent guess, but maybe they are left-handed?
have to admit my own experience is only with 30years war drill reenactment. Would be nice to hear what is up todate now with Wachbattalion etc-
Earlier on Vic stated he wanted standard field livery cadians in order to have them around in masses.
- Well, after looking at the fig once more, Vic, I think you might swap the free arm to something straight. While the arm with the flashlight looks quite convincing to me, the bent arm does not look like "attention", but like "sloppy guard having a drool in the standing-box". Do yoh have an arm with straight elbow, hand stretched with inside to the leg? Would be perfect!

very good reasoning on the drill and posing...I was thinking the same actually but as I was relying on common sense I dismissed the thought as we are talking about military stuff here this will be taken into account for the next model ! I am already imaging lines of lines of standing to attention soldiers...*sigh*

you have a lot of catching up to do with the absence mister!
Glad to have you back bro!
thanks matey... I will hop to your thread in a minute... I know due to lurking a wee bit what´s waiting there for me tho^^
lone dirty dog wrote:Nice job on the cut and shunt with a little GS work should work well, as to the rifle from what I have seen they are always on the same side.
today I altered a bit the mini... I think the mark I had some flaws... the free arm as Hruotland pointed out...but I still think the wee soldier has a bit too short legs... I think I will fix them tomorrow...then GS will happen...
Red Harvest wrote:Nice work on the Guard. You mispelled "Actung" though. Perhaps add something else, something ceremonial to him?
hmmm.... ceremonial...?... I wanted to add some bayonets... wanted to use DE blades for that as they look a bit more ceremonial to me...?...and as shaso will say below... Achtung... but well... that wouldn´t really cause the right reactions on a British parade ground...

If spelled "A-c-h-t-u-n-g" it is correct.
indeed^^... tho my sarge always yelled "STILL...gestanden..."....and the "gestanden" part is barely hear able...

thank you sir! I was trying to pose the soldier in a way I remember the standing at attention from my military service days... tho I have to say we didn´t stand to attention with guns at all... only unarmed... and due to german bundeswehr military protocol there are some small differencies between british and U.S. military standards... first... you make fists next to your thighs, and the elbows are slightly bend... also the feet are pointing in different directions at a slight angle... BUT...
your point is valid, as I was aiming for british and American military procedure... and not german... thus...
"chch changes"^^
what do you think?... better?...it is a pointing arm of the HW team kit... but substantially altered... cut up and shaved of some bits here and there... the hand tho I kept... it is the right hand of the medics bandaging arm set...for your info...
He looks brilliant Vik, nice job. Only thing you maybe add would be a bayonet! Got to be a pointy stick for guardin aint it!!
Latest is good and would be better for mass production, but liked the first one too.
And just to come in late on the conversation, I am sure that the shouldered arms are always on the same side. Regardless of lefty or righty. Got to do with formation manouvering I think. Imagine them Yankee boys who do spectacular stuff with bayoneted guns, one lefty and your arms off!!
I get a spelling lesson in German. Danke, herren. Never noticed that 'H' before. I saw all those 'a's strung together in your title and for a moment I thought it was a Dutch word
A bayonet would be a nice touch. I suppose how you paint him could be sufficent to distinguish him too. He looks good as is though. Nice work.
And now I am noticing how big that rifle is, maybe 160-165 cm in scale? Wow. Perfect for a ceremonial piece.
it is only the standard lasgun you get in many kits as a detail ... when you chop up a guardsman you discover a lot of the weird way GW made these... for instance the legs are not really even in length... especially if you have a wide stance as you get in some legs... and the arms... the one holding the mortar shell or the pointy arm... are way too long compared to the ones that are bend...weird... very weird... one must not ponder about the peeps sitting at the desks at GW... really...
Never expect a right and reasonable scale off the mismatch GW does, I mean the guys have 1/35 scale hands and heads fro crying out loud! and the BC on the Leman Russ is no way right scale 120mm as the old schematics indicate as a 1/35 scale 125mm cannon is dwarfed by the girth and muzzle mouth of it!
Getting there, the arm is good now. - But I fear you should correct yet another GW misfit - look at the boots. One cuff bigger than the other, little bit "westcoast" maybe? Should be quite easy to correct. Either make the left one higher with green stuff or carve around the right leg, lowering the upper rim of the cuff and instead continuing the folds of the trouser. What do you think?
I think I will fix that with GS asap... tho this mistake we cant shove into the shoes of GW... while cutting up and reposing the right boot it became a slight bit taller... but that I think I can cope...if all fails he will afterwards look like he is due to a bit of a close quarter yelling by his sergeant at arms^^
Christmas is soon upon us... The tree needs its stuffing by packages...so... The missus and were thinking to add a gaming console to the heap...but to be honest...what system should we currently choose? We do own the old Wii but even tho we have three controls and a balance board the idea was to provide the kids with the Disney infinity game... And this would be only interesting in our opinion with version 2.0... But that would need a new console...so we now are open for suggestions mateys...
If you're going to be gaming yourself (and I presume you do) then I'd go PS4 - atm it's a hands down optimal choice overall. PS4 has better performance, wide game library, some awesome exclusives and a variety of other "pros". I'd call it a better investment. And that comes from an 360 fan.
Microsoft is the devil. So is Sony. Not sure which is less evil. Can I recommend no console? Perhaps a gaming rig instead? Something that can be used as a media server as well as a gaming device? Since I do not play the 'vidya games' myself, I have no idea if that is a better option.
Hmmm, IIRC German Folklore, you guys have something called a Belschnickel? (and if needed, feel free to correct the spelling ) Instead of a switch, these days he would certainly scare children by threatening to bring a Sony or Microsoft product into the house .
I think the PS4 has more utility to it as an overall media hub- though the XBawks is attempting to take that title itself- thing is, they're both rather unintuitive for the new learner.
A SteamBox might do alright depending on the game, but I'm not sure if Disney Infinity would work on it.
Honestly, if you're going for a full family gaming console, Nintendo is probably what you'll want. Their products tend to be better investments overall as well, I think- more people will continue playing games on their old Nintendo consoles than will play games on older Microsoft or Sony consoles.
I can't recommend any, all we have are WII. Old ones, just really used anymore for Netflix. PS4 looks like the better to me, just depends on budget I guess.
@red harvest: if I recall my German Folk lore correctly, I have never heard of a Belschnickel. But we are a country of ginormous local cultural differences. Myself, I am a Lower Saxon from the northern parts. Wikipedia tells me this "Belsnickel" or "Pelzmäntle"(meaning "fur coat") is stemming from the Palatine and Franconian area somewhere in the southern parts, or what we "Fish Heads" call "south of the weisswurst aequator". We do not know much about those parts. They seem to drink the wrong type of beer, sometimes even (lo and behold! wine, speak funny and are definitely not Bavarians. On the other hand, Vic is from Berlin. They also seem to drink the wrong type of beer, speak funny and are definitely not Bavarians. So maybe they have a Belsnickel there?
Automatically Appended Next Post: well concerning the console, XBox Kinect. It is soooo much cooler not to have a controler while doing things like running, dodging, throwing things, kicking balls without holding a bone in your hand - AHEM DID I JUST WRITE THIS I DID NOT MEAN WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK NO REALLY!
Advent is heavy business for parents, we all know. Hope you have time to relax sometime along christmas, vic! I found this pic and thought you might like the inspiration...
Thats really cool. Looks like it is built on a forklift chassis?
My Grandfather mentioned the Belschnickel a few times. His Grandparents were from Lower Saxony and Westphalia. I suspect it is the Westphalian side that knew of it. The Pennsylvania Dutch here in the US-- who are of German descent (should be Pennsylvania Deutsch) also have the Belschnickel. I just think it is an amusing idea.
Never knew Germany would be so compartmentalized, but I guess it makes sense. Now about the beer, Kolsch? That's good stuff.
And Vik seems to have taken an extended leave of absense. I hope he makes it back for the contest. Or just to check in. Who else can keep those pesky welders at bay?
Excellent pic there, totally love the concept. Can almost see a couple guardsman with a stubber mounted on the top, and a Commisar stood waving get me closer! Just needs an Aquilla on the front!
I'm not so sure about the forklifter, my guess is a tandem-axle trailer chassis combined with a one-axle tractor. But whatever, definitely the best motorhome ever, and something worthy even of Yarrik himself! - - Now, about Vic, I'm sure he will will return once the holidays are over. You can't combine familylife and an internet geek presence in times like these.
Now, koelsch beer, okay I guess if you are from Cologne. But up here we like our beer - well, tasting more beer-y less lemonady, you know... plus they serve it in ridiculously small glasses. But at least it's made from barley like its hould be, not from wheat like in some forsaken corners of the republic...
That's right, Mr von Domm, I'm talking about this abomination served in YOUR city! With a shot of fruit sirup even! Man, can't you drink your beer with a shot of clear Schnapps in it like every good countryman should?
***gasps*** "pheeewww" finally I have crawled from underneath a heap of schoollife, greasy food, gift wrappings and the ait is not longer cluttered by merry songs...."pheeww" indeedy...
but to all of you that are still within the deepest festivities ...: Murray...er...merry Christmas...!

LOL... well I know the "Knecht Ruprecht"... which has some strinking similarities to the belschnickel it seems... from appearance to modus operandi...as well as the tendency to be the darker side of santa...but surley we all wont want to see naughty kids hurt, eh?...... after all...been there, done that...
also... decisions have been made...and we went for a Wii U... because some friends of us also own one and the kids might thus be able to play online with them... , and we could use the old games as well... and Mrs von domm was only to be tempted to get us all this console in the end... we also got inifinity and so everything was golden... so we thought... but alas it was not... as we unwrapped our gifts and the kids were overjoyed by the stuff they got, in the end we couldn´t start the damned thing... after consulting the support we will have to replace the wretched machina...*shakes fist*... the disappointment in the eyes of my kids will have to get soothed on Saturday by someone from the store...mercy by upon that poor soul!!!

I've seen that while surfing for steampunky goodness from time to time... an impressive built... and a truly interesting future project...

Who else can keep those pesky welders at bay?
compartmentalized... red... you don´t know the half of it... the U.S. is called the melting pot... well... Germany always was called the patchwork rug... as all the small countries and lands of misery have been sewn together by the sword... as for Kölsch... well... we´re talking beer... not lemonade... right?... and a good beer needs a strong body... not something that only hints of body leftovers ...

Excellent pic there, totally love the concept. Can almost see a couple guardsman with a stubber mounted on the top, and a Commisar stood waving get me closer! Just needs an Aquilla on the front!
dunno about any master sitting here next to me...but me, myself and I have been hiding a bit.. lurking occasionally...sitting in my armchair...and looking in awe at the deeds of you lot here...

Man, can't you drink your beer with a shot of clear Schnapps in it like every good countryman should?
hey Hruotland...no need yell at me... I've only drank "Weisse" once... never did it for me... but I like Bock, and other more stout like beers... "Köstrizer" for instance... and some Czech beer too... and of course the "Guiness"... as this is a meal that can be served in a pint... that´s what I call a beer...
as for that vehicle...hmmm.... a commissar command vehicle...now there is a nice thought.... (kept for future needs^^)

well... hopefully we´ll be with a new one on Saturday... then the games can start...
but for now... let me show you what my beloved santa got me for Christmas...:
42 new eyedropper bottled paints...brushes, and even a cute Kromlech Orc Pilot!
well... I wanted to replace my old GW paint pots for quite some time now... and this is my new chance to up my game in painting...hopefully...
and to show you that I intend to progress on that road... here is a little lick of the lolly so to speak.....a little blurry sadly... but a little WIP nevertheless...:
well... I hope you´ll like... more to these later on...
Sad to hear about that no-show with the console, Vic! There is a retailer out there that will have to crawl on the floor on Saturday! At least to have his noggins dunked for your kids' amusement!
The part with yelling: well you drink Bock, you are atoned for everything! All is cool! Maybe I can invite you to a good barrel-drawn Herforder Red even on occasion!
well... maybe we can persuade...harangue him to give us an infinity figure for free...^^
we know Germany is THE beer country... eh?^^... thanks for the invite... I bet that´s a good one... it is funny... there are so many beers... some of the good ones you wont see anywhere else tho... as the major ones aren´t often the good ones...
Nice start mate but you really need to get cracking, hey have you checked out the new bearskins Mad Robot Miniatures are releasing might be of interest to you
dramatic entrance, eh? comrade?... well... I know about that one^^...see below... and welcome back!
at shaso... now we have a fully functioning Wii U and we´re not afraid to use it daily... the avengers game is quite nice... it is soooo funny to destroy cars or chuck pedestrians into the Hudson river...
at LDD... the bearskins I actually think look weird... but the ornamental breastplates are awesome... I have recently obtained eight lizard steeds and these would make some great riders...
as for the paints... well... I started to put them to good use already... pics of proof following below... as you might possibly remember I made these small grot tanks from PC and from scratch...
and this one...:
these are so far my heaviest weathered projects ...the pics are still WIPs as everything is still pre- wash...
and I have mused about what to enter... I recently did my annual new years eve salvage through our neighbourhood and among a plethora of wooden sticks from firecracker rockets...I found this... a very big dome...
the idea is to make a big grot rocket... a lunar landing vehicle...kind of...
to create lastly a diorama that is related to this old classic cinematic scene:
of course with lots of small green evil weirdos all over the place...
Your tanks are beautiful, and your weathering is brilliant, looking very effective so far.
That is a BIG dome, looking forward to this, I love the concept, and you could easily have it as playable dangerous terrain, even if the Grots are not represented by either player, a grot crash in the middle of a battle field would be so typical! Or it could represent a drop pod or your grot army! Yup brilliant idea sir.
it is one of those hilarious ideas that has to prove its worth on the table... I think for this setting the moonish character of the base is the most important factor... never made any craters before... so I see here the main obstacle so far... the pod/ rocket I think will be quite straight forward... also... the original source provides already so many nice and league worthy shots I won´t be without further guide^^
and thanks mate... as said on another page praise goes to our mate cam here too for these tanks, as I see him and his productivity with a small scale time resources as one who can do miracles while having lots of stuff around his ears to do all day... (and again we definitely need a saluting orkmoticon !!!!)
Maybe for your craters, Jam Jar lids, of different sizes, upside down and then use Polyfiller or something close. A drier mix to build up the sides of the craters and water it down and pour the centers, that way you get smooth centers. If it cracks it will look even more effective. And for rubble, the "rocky cat litter in PVA glue makes excellent rubble/scatter debris.
cat litter... good idea... maybe I should get me a small package... as we don´t have a family pet...hmm... and the jam jar lids...(sounds like a new terrorist organization...doesn´t it? ) that is a good idea! I think when I start working on this base the original dimensions will soon be achieved by me... (OMN did a smallish miscalculation at the comps OP...)
originally I had planned to make the whole base in plaster...as a friend of the family provided us with a 10 kg package... but I think to only use that for the base it would soon get way too heavy...better I use foam too...hmm....
Nice to see the tanks in glorious technocolour vik Good job!
Excellent idea for the grots-on-the-moon
Pie tin craters are a good choice. Not considered jar lids before, that's a nice idea.
I've always liked using cut down toilet/kitchen rolls for the basis....cut a ragged edge, use some parcel tape to create a bit of a slope on inner and outer surfaces, then liberal application of pva and scatter.
Lovely Tanks VIK... looking really cool and a sweet paintjob on them also! (The "wonky" exhausts are my favourite!)
Really nice idea Re: the comp also... cant wait to see what you do with it! Craters sound good... sounds like you have plenty of different styles and types to try out...! One nice thing is that if it is a "moonscape" that the unfortunate Grots crash onto... all the impact craters will be different due to the variety of objects and impact types that occur..... so.... try out one of each type of crater I think!
What size rocket head is that ????? all the ones we find are small crappy rubbery plastic ones ........... I think they are rocket ends ? Uuurgrgrghhhhhh
Either way like the idea of a crashed pod maybe add some droids as well
Like the grot tanks see they are looking the Bizzz combat colours and all that
Lizard steeds are they the old skool cold ones or the new raptor ones ? please say old skool like the idea of rough riders chestplates kind of what I am going to use mine for.
You should check out Col Gravis heads selection some great SP stylise heads, would work great with the chest plate
Somehow I imagine those widdle grot tanks waddling behind a mega-tank, going like "quack quack quack quack!" And next to the three tanklings, a termonuclear warhead big enough to end the solar system in one go... from one exteme to the other. Nice find, btw!
Tanklings. Lol. good one. They look like they were fun to build too. A good thing. Now what was that nose cone in its former life? it reminds me of those panty hose eggs (L'eggs brand.)
Speaking of Moon Landings... I'm reminded of that Wallace and Grommit short, "A Grand Day Out" Great stuff.
Hey Vik, had to quit lurking... excellent job on the grot tanks. They are wonderfully grotty looking & make me smile... which is EXACTLY the job of a good grot tank!
apropos of nothing mates... carnival is around the next corner... so I have started making props for my kids costumes... you could say they will be going as guardsmen...
but they get some pumped up weaponry...after all their dad can´t let them fight the good fight with torchlights only...,)
so this is what my youngest, oskar will be wielding... still WIP...but soon to be painted...:
a build I started in 2010...whew.... now I feel old...
Cool bolter... but, and forgive my ignorance here, doesn't your fine nation have some strange laws about replica fire-arms? Even replicas of non-existent ones? I've heard cosplayers need to be careful about the materials they use for their weapons.
No that is a nice piece of work on a Bolt-gun, and that it is a hand crafted piece as in the original fluff! My dad was never so handy as to make me such things. You are a good dad!
Red, our weapons law prohibits the carrying of ""Lookalike-firearms" in the public, that is, replika weapons that can be mistaken for a real one. And that is not so stupid/overdone as it might seem, considering posession (and carrying of course) of real firearms is generally forbidden. There are enough stupidos in the streets who are concerned about the small size of their manly parts and want to feel manlier by having an iron tube dangling down the leg. The same stupidity (and the aforementioned small balls) leads them to pretend with a replika, a soft-air gun or the like instead of going illegal and getting some real piece. But brass enough they are to wiggle their ersatz wiener around in the open and talk thrash. Now, intelligent people know the old word "don't pull a gun if you are not willing to use it". Because that is a deadly mistake. In the end we have a cop who took that bigmouth for real and a bigmouth with a soft air gun and a hole in his pelt... This law is to protect stupid young men from their own stupidity, as well as to make those cops who had to make this decision feel a little less traumatised.
A wooden 40k bolter replika will definitely not look like a real firearm, so I think nobody will arrest Oskar. By the way, if I understand that law correctly, you are not allowed to bear those lookalikes IN THE PUBLIC. You can have them at home, and you can show them off on "non-public" occasions. But don't go into the streets with them, and the convention hall security might get nervous too.
Hruotland, most states in the US require replicas to be marked with something like bright orange barrels but no prohibitions about having them in public. There have been instances of Police shooting people after thinking said people-- including children-- were menacing them with real guns. Not a good situation.
Vik, paint the bolter in bright cheerful colors and problem solved it really is very well done.
Great Bolter Vik! Amazing details, especially those wooden rivet plugs!
As someone who built LOTS of wooden guns when I was a kid, I only forsee one problem Oskar's boyish handling may cause....the grain direction on the handle could cause the grip to break across the grain, or the trigger guard to break.
Vik--did you eyeball everything for that bolter, or were you working from some kind of template? i have recently acquired a papercraft template for a bolter, which looks similar to what you've made...i definitely like that the handle on your bolter is made of wood...seems like a smart move, if your kinder are going to play with it and it isn't just sitting on a wall or shelf...

'Round here is it Mardi Gras, in case you were wondering. Biggest festivities are in New Orleans.
never heard about these regulations... I know that we aren´t allowed to carry life guns and amo around unless we have a license...which is rarely granted...but this I hear for the first time... thanks for giving me a new fear... for now I have thought the worst that could happen is that the teacher will forbid the use of these toy guns at school...8where they will play and celebrate "fasching"...hmmm...we´ll see about that... as the schools and kindergardens are cluttered with femals looking after kids, you can imagine that many of these are dead against toy guns...one of my favourite aka worst lines was...:be thankful that you don´t live in a country full of war... well... even in these countries kids play with sticks of toy guns thief and cop...but...you can´t teach a teacher...right...

mate! great to have you back here! and I am totally with you on the wood grain issue here, in fact I had issues already during sawing and thus I have taken some precautions for the long levity of the bolter... first the pistol grip got a coating of PVA and tissue paper to strengthen the region and to have a better feel too... also, the bolter will get a shoulder strap... to have it not fly out of his hands ...hopefully...

hey mate... well... I speak of experience: breaking along the grain is a non-issue if you use Multiplex plates for pistol grips and the like. (Multiplex are fat plywood-like plates of various sizes up to several cm. The strongest variety has a covering layer and is used for lorry load floors.) I even made a Winchester '73 toy gun with "working" lever-action. The lever is cut out from Multiplex and has never shown signs of breaking, although it is quite thin on some corners.
Vik, you wanted to kit out your boys with guns and even hand grenades for SCHOOL CARNIVAL COSTUME PARTY??? I don't even talk about that law (nobody with his/her senses will ever mistake a 40k bolter for a real weapon, expecially not at carnival), I talk about the teachers... I mean, maybe they are deep chilled down in big B, but the kind of teachers I know gets "pedagogique" even when a boy comes in pirates outfit and has a cheap plastic sabre or has a "pew pew" pistol in his cowboy holster. The same kind of teacheress is completely cool with little girls in quite overdone make-up and stripperella outfit, by the way... because it is sooo pedagogique for girls to explore their role as woman, but not for boys to explore the role of alpha-male in a world of competitive and sometimes quite violent men. But I digress. Extra Bonus points for Doing Your Thing No Matter What!

LOOOOL.... you went so damn straight to the crucial point here... indeed... girls can be as skimpy as their parents allow...but boys get to be socially streamlined into oblivion ...this is one of my favourite themes to get my mouth frothing...argh....I work as a "erzieher" and I see fellow female colleagues and parents trying to get the basic needs out of the systems of small boys...we will one future day see what kind of horrors this will produce in fully grown up men...BUT...everybody is allowed to make babies...
and...multiplex... I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT!!! of course....man...I used just raw wooden boards because I liked to work with good looking wood, but in the end nothing is seen of the material... as you will later on that post see...also I have thought long and deep about the muzzle hint you gave me last time... I think the spirit of that suggestion shows a bit in the second gun I made....but see for yourself...
