Cool bolter... but, and forgive my ignorance here, doesn't your fine nation have some strange laws about replica fire-arms? Even replicas of non-existent ones? I've heard cosplayers need to be careful about the materials they use for their weapons.
And there is this, for amusement, or something, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.869570-Cosplaying-Gunmen-Arrested-At-Ottawa-Comic-Convention
'Round here is it Mardi Gras, in case you were wondering. Biggest festivities are in New Orleans.

Red, our weapons law prohibits the carrying of ""Lookalike-firearms" in the public, that is, replika weapons that can be mistaken for a real one. And that is not so stupid/overdone as it might seem, considering posession (and carrying of course) of real firearms is generally forbidden. There are enough stupidos in the streets who are concerned about the small size of their manly parts and want to feel manlier by having an iron tube dangling down the leg. The same stupidity (and the aforementioned small balls) leads them to pretend with a replika, a soft-air gun or the like instead of going illegal and getting some real piece. But brass enough they are to wiggle their ersatz wiener around in the open and talk thrash. Now, intelligent people know the old word "don't pull a gun if you are not willing to use it". Because that is a deadly mistake. In the end we have a cop who took that bigmouth for real and a bigmouth with a soft air gun and a hole in his pelt... This law is to protect stupid young men from their own stupidity, as well as to make those cops who had to make this decision feel a little less traumatised.
A wooden 40k bolter replika will definitely not look like a real firearm, so I think nobody will arrest Oskar. By the way, if I understand that law correctly, you are not allowed to bear those lookalikes IN THE PUBLIC. You can have them at home, and you can show them off on "non-public" occasions. But don't go into the streets with them, and the convention hall security might get nervous too.
Vik, that's a fine piece of work.

Hruotland, most states in the US require replicas to be marked with something like bright orange barrels but no prohibitions about having them in public. There have been instances of Police shooting people after thinking said people-- including children-- were menacing them with real guns. Not a good situation.
Vik, paint the bolter in bright cheerful colors and problem solved it really is very well done.
I think the correct reply was, "that's what she said."

Great Bolter Vik! Amazing details, especially those wooden rivet plugs!
As someone who built LOTS of wooden guns when I was a kid, I only forsee one problem Oskar's boyish handling may cause....the grain direction on the handle could cause the grip to break across the grain, or the trigger guard to break.

Vik--did you eyeball everything for that bolter, or were you working from some kind of template? i have recently acquired a papercraft template for a bolter, which looks similar to what you've made...i definitely like that the handle on your bolter is made of wood...seems like a smart move, if your kinder are going to play with it and it isn't just sitting on a wall or shelf...

my sons usually are full of envy when I cobble together something... they take it for granted that it is something to play with... that´s of course a compliment and a curse... and expected when one works with play with plastic soldiers...^^...they already posed with the finished built bolter around the living room... I think we all are a bit like grots in that regard... give us a really big gun and we all feel like Rambo
never heard about these regulations... I know that we aren´t allowed to carry life guns and amo around unless we have a license...which is rarely granted...but this I hear for the first time... thanks for giving me a new fear... for now I have thought the worst that could happen is that the teacher will forbid the use of these toy guns at school...8where they will play and celebrate "fasching"...hmmm...we´ll see about that... as the schools and kindergardens are cluttered with femals looking after kids, you can imagine that many of these are dead against toy guns...one of my favourite aka worst lines was...:be thankful that you don´t live in a country full of war... well... even in these countries kids play with sticks of toy guns thief and cop...but...you can´t teach a teacher...right...

LOL...well...they wont later on look like nerf guns... but I get your point... I try to make the non metal parts in red... thus creating that fictional look...hopefully I will be able to convince my son.. and that this will help make it work...

mate! great to have you back here! and I am totally with you on the wood grain issue here, in fact I had issues already during sawing and thus I have taken some precautions for the long levity of the bolter... first the pistol grip got a coating of PVA and tissue paper to strengthen the region and to have a better feel too... also, the bolter will get a shoulder strap... to have it not fly out of his hands ...hopefully...

hey mate... well... I´ve definitely did my share of research for this project... believe me! so I have quite a nice amount of pics on my pc stored... even papercraft templates... but in the end I rely on my "eyeballing" as I needed to make this piece kids suitable... so not to many details that could fall off or hurt...and...I have a small 28mm scale bolter on my desk for reference...gotta haave a reference piece handy at all time in 3d ... as for the plaing with the piece... well... I speak of experience: breaking along the grain is a non-issue if you use Multiplex plates for pistol grips and the like. (Multiplex are fat plywood-like plates of various sizes up to several cm. The strongest variety has a covering layer and is used for lorry load floors.) I even made a Winchester '73 toy gun with "working" lever-action. The lever is cut out from Multiplex and has never shown signs of breaking, although it is quite thin on some corners.
Vik, you wanted to kit out your boys with guns and even hand grenades for SCHOOL CARNIVAL COSTUME PARTY??? I don't even talk about that law (nobody with his/her senses will ever mistake a 40k bolter for a real weapon, expecially not at carnival), I talk about the teachers... I mean, maybe they are deep chilled down in big B, but the kind of teachers I know gets "pedagogique" even when a boy comes in pirates outfit and has a cheap plastic sabre or has a "pew pew" pistol in his cowboy holster. The same kind of teacheress is completely cool with little girls in quite overdone make-up and stripperella outfit, by the way... because it is sooo pedagogique for girls to explore their role as woman, but not for boys to explore the role of alpha-male in a world of competitive and sometimes quite violent men. But I digress. Extra Bonus points for Doing Your Thing No Matter What!

LOOOOL.... you went so damn straight to the crucial point here... indeed... girls can be as skimpy as their parents allow...but boys get to be socially streamlined into oblivion ...this is one of my favourite themes to get my mouth frothing...argh....I work as a "erzieher" and I see fellow female colleagues and parents trying to get the basic needs out of the systems of small boys...we will one future day see what kind of horrors this will produce in fully grown up men...BUT...everybody is allowed to make babies...
and...multiplex... I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT!!! of course....man...I used just raw wooden boards because I liked to work with good looking wood, but in the end nothing is seen of the material... as you will later on that post see...also I have thought long and deep about the muzzle hint you gave me last time... I think the spirit of that suggestion shows a bit in the second gun I made....but see for yourself...

I hope we see some of your productivity soon... I am so behind my backlog....so if you open up a new thread...don´t hesitate to give me a nudge mate...

indeed mate^^...
GawdamSumbish wrote:hey Vik, any WIP shots of the rocket & moon?
not currently mate... but I will soon work again on that subject again...
BUT FOR NOW....let there be big guns...1:1 scale...first... the Bolter...done:
blue... well it is the weapon for my Oskar...and he loves blue...so...
and since his brother is also in need of some weaponry...I made this:
it is still lacking a few details... but in essence it is done...or what do you think?
should I add or change something?... the scheme is a bit strong...right? but both costumes are camo and have blue details... and Felix loves Yellow... so the combination made be use this scheme...
but I am always open for helpful suggestions...
both together:
and these are the plans I made and worked with, with a Xerox and a bit of help from gimp...
and these are the WIP stages of the elysian lasgun of felix`.
thoughts? cheers, vik
