Well, after lurking around in the shadowy areas of hobby paradise known as dakka, I have decided to make my own project log. I have just finished some new terrain that I will post pics of after I can figure out how too!

Shadowy? Why Shadowy? Why not fluff it up, like "Dark deceptive crevasses" ?
I kid. Good luck on the log!

Hi there Cain!
Easiest way to embed your pics into your blog is to go in to your gallery, view the picture you want to embed and copy the link that's written under "Forums" in the "Share this image". Hope this helps! Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yeah, and good luck on your blog!

Now that I have uploaded a few more images, I thought I would show you my newest piece of terrain... A downed valkyrie x2! seeing as the thing kept falling apart due to cheap plastic glue, I put my thinking cap on and got to work!

Thanks! I really did not like the pose on the space hulk mini and after rummaging around in my bitz box found a few nice add-ons, namely a brettonian spear and new head. I am quite pleased with how he turned out ( the base has not been finished yet)

My thoughts exactly! I plan on making an army of orks that has been cast out from regular ork society because they were 'too annoying and for having the worst ork creations' (quite an achievement for an Ork!) Automatically Appended Next Post:
First half all assembled
Started to paint it.
I am unsure as to what I should do to the other half, I was thinking of having some pilots camped outside the wreck as if they had survived but had nowhere to go, any other ideas? How about using the normal crew but swapping the heads for some skeleton ones. Or only one dead pilot and add some tracks away from the wreck, this way you could also make an objective marker to go with it. The other pilot has managed to get away and needs to be found before the intel he carries falls into enemy hands, yadda yadda yadda, I'm sure you get the point....

Hmm, I think that sounds like a cool idea, I had not thought of doing some dead pilots, I shall see what I can rummage up as I have just used all of my guardsmen in another project (codenamed 'I dont care if I cant have all of those fancy weapons in that squad! Perhaps have a crew member hanging out the broken window, with wee bits of blood drenching the side. And have another crew member, like Lennysmash said, with a skeleton head. That would be awesome.

Thanks for the comments guys! I shall give them some serious thought.
Here are some of the guardsmen I am working on at the moment, now called Squad MSMR (thanks Lennysmash!)
Yes I know that is only 9 people, but I have another guy to go along with the missile launcher.
I am also doing a sniper squad but the pictures of them seem to have vanished!
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
Only nine guys? It doesn't matter its Squad MSMR after all Had another idea btw, you could make some removable guardsmen for the piece in the style of Black Hawk Down (the part where the two special force snipers are trying to defend themselves from the crowd in the down chopper), that way the whole piece can serve as either terrain or as an objective in its own right. You could even use the snipers that you are making. Automatically Appended Next Post: And now I have to put Black Hawk on for while I paint, damn it!

Post by: Commander Cain
Well, after wrestling with the photo maker for a while I managed to get the picture of the snipers up (still very WIP)

I'm liking the colour on the crashed valk. Really cool paint job. If I can suggest something though maybe a little black stippling around the hole in the wing to make it look burnt and maybe some metal scratches where its crashed into the ground (for scratches, I find a bit of blister foam dipped in a small amount of Boltgun metal looks good. Then take most of the paint off by dabbing it. Then applying what is left sparingly to the model in the direction you want the scratch). Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing it based.
Really liking the colour scheme on your Blood Angels too. Nice and bright as BA should be.

Thanks for all these great comments guys! Seeing as I am the only hobbyist in the province it does get a bit lonely sometimes.
PDH@ I think I will do that very soon, it was one of the things that I missed when painting it
Rose_Mountainz@ I have yet to decide between sand or mud (the valk will be part of a DKOK army) any suggestions would be great!
On the suggestion side of things, I was wondering how to paint my tyranid genestealers. I have two space hulk sets of them so it adds up to around 40 of the things! .I did not buy 2 space hulk sets, but 2 of the 'nids came broken, GW said they were sorry by sending me every purple frame included in the set! (the only thing was that I had many that were identical and ended up chopping to make them look different them up anyway. Hmm got a bit off track there, but any painting ideas would be great (mine all look like they are wearing pajamas for some reason!
Speaking of space hulk, this is what I did with the extra 'dead' marine. ( WIP paintwise)

I sketched the picture out to start with, then painted the details on (very tricky!) I am sure someone with more skill could do a better job than me. As for materials, I had to use Fimo (modeling clay that you have to bake) It was not the beast to work with and still needs a bit of GS work to it. The picture was simply PVA'ed on (not to much!) Just noticed I haven't commented yet.
Like the deffkoptas Good use of the SH termie, like the guard with RPG
Valk's looking good, but definitely needs a bit of weathering and damage.
Missile platform pretty sweet, but does need something else in that space in front of the actual launchers. Bit of 'gubbinzes' if you're keeping it automated, or could be a good place for a hatch if manned.
Keep it up

I never got round to posing a pic of the dred for my army, the overall paint scheme is not to bad but it still needs basing and a few little details adding

Legion of the Damned, The Lost and Damned are chaos I think, but I agree the flames need to be a little different. bigmeklover's idea of a kind of blue flame might look cool. I don't think you really need to come up with any fluff for the flames to be there as if they are DC then they are considered lost/damned by their brethren already.

Ok people, made some more progress on the top half of the crashed valkyrie. I added a paved road and started to texture the base. the pave was made of a thin sheet of plastic with etched 2cm squares

Your crashed Valk came out very nicely. Would make for a nice objective or for a sort of diorama piece; seeing as you want the less industrial look to it, maybe a battle that had taken place a while back and now this Valk just lays forgotten. You don't think a gold helmet would just blend in too much? I was thinking of doing it white or maybe red.

Post by: Battle Brother Lucifer
Well, gold is the color he *should* have, (his status mark)
If the servant has red robes, the gold helmet would stand out well.
Hmm, adding blue flames to my Bad Moons (that I will be making) may look good.
Curse you for putting up that image

I do love those blue flames, thanks for the suggestion guys! Might as well post a pic or two of my one and only tau model, I covered it with weapons and it must have been repainted at least three times but that happens to everything I paint! (the pics are a bit blurry, the macro setting was not being cooperative)
Ooh a non blurry pic!

Unfortunately I have had another bout of repainting and there are two sentinels on the painting table again! Bit of a late night post as I have nothing better to do. The sentinel that I am painting ATM will be finished soon but I found a possessed marine the looked a bit lonely so I decided to paint it while the sentinel was drying off (very wet paint) Here is the said traitor marine
OK that is it for the night.

Excellent looking stuff here Cain; my only concern is it looks like the paint is a little thick on the Sentinel, other than that, good stuff!
As for the Forge World Weathering Powders: I really like them, I got them as a gift and have used them a little bit. Just get the full set, its always good to have a variety of powders to work with.

These are all looking great. I like the crashed Valk, though I do think it could do with some disturbed earth around it so it looks like it's actually dug itself into the ground, rather than neatly shaved off the bottom half of it
As for the weathering powders... I've had mine for ages and only just tried them this evening. I have to say they are very easy to work with and produce great results in no time at all.
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
OK so I think I will get the powders. I have also ordered the masterclass book as it looks like there is some very nice stuff in it. And hey, I also got myself some DKOK at last! (yeah I know, I am having a bit of a FW binge, but it is all in the rightful cause of the Emperor!)

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good way to make "trench" bases. I was going for a wet, shiny kind of mud as if it has been trodden through a lot. I have heard that gloss varnish is quite good, but I wanted to ask the experts first!
I have a whole lot of guard begging for their change of terrain (such as this guy)

never painted that poly before... i am not sure if you have to seal it up first... so it doesn't soak the paint up like a sponge. and then a spray coat or two, and yes some dry brush for effect/detail.

yeah you may have to primer seal it first..... i don't know, my experience with those kinds of materials, is you really have to prep it before you actually start the "painting"

I always use any color latex paint. I make alot of my own scenery for D&D and 40k. Once you carve the Pink polystrene to shape, you can dip a 1" paint brush in paint thinner and just lightly run it over the surface to make it more rock or earth like. Then I use a throw away brush to paint on a heavy coat of latex paint, that will seal it. you should be able to use Acrylic, oil and even spray paint. Tho I havent used every brand. I hope this helps.

Genestealer tut is up and running (after having a massive fight with the Dakka uploader )
After base coating the figure in black spray, apply Merchrite red to the skin and blue ink to the armour (the ink that I use is good because it has a shiny quality that is good for tyranids)
Highlight armour with enchanted blue and wash the skin with brown ink.
Then give the armour a careful highlight of ice blue and overbrush the skin with blood red
As I was running low on my time limit (15 mins) I quickly put some yellow on the eyes and white on the teeth to break up the face.
After all this is done you can highlight the claws with fortress grey and patch up the armour with some more blue ink. Similar techniques can be used on various other tyranids (the ones in this pic have not had their skin done as well)
Never lose the recipe for painting figures. I have made myself a page of different paints (nicknamed 'the scroll of knowledge')
Time for dinner I suppose Automatically Appended Next Post: porkuslime wrote:hmmmm.. looks pretty dang nice. I concur that the head choice you made looks best. I can't wait to see what you do to the backpack and shield.

Okay, here is the new paint scheme for my IG. Green cloth with a battle damaged white armour.
The cloth was basecoated orkhide shade, washed with scorched brown, highlighted with catachan green, then given a small highlight of graveyard earth and kommando khaki.
The armour was basecoated with astronomican grey, given a coat of 50/50 astronomican grey and skull white, and then weathering was added with a sponge and brown paint. Finally I added a very thinned down wash of brown ink to blend it all together. (Credit for the armour recipe goes to sons of orar from his tutorial a while back)

I kinda liked the white, but I can see that the combination of green and white is a bit off, what was the behind the colour scheme? winter planet?

the dammage looks very realistic, are you going to do freehand decals on the shoulder

Okey dokey, here is the altered armour colour. Three successive washes of vermin brown, scorched brown and catachan green. Then, after it has dried, rub away some of the more exposed pieces of armour. IMO the colour is fantastic, maybe a little too battle damaged to be realistic as it looks like it has been buried in the ground for a few years
However this is 40k and who knows what could have led to the armour being in that state.
I also tried out another colour scheme but I am not sure I like it that much. But the pics are taken so here you go...
Your humble servant, Cain Automatically Appended Next Post: Forgot to say, Blackhand- the terrain will be trench mud I think (same as the scout sentinel)
Neil101- I have yet to think of a good troop symbol but you will be the first to know

ooh they are both very nice ,i think the yellow and green look more striking but the dusty brown white , looks more original.
why not have both? officors i yellow troopers in white

Post by: Commander Cain
Perhaps a stripe of yellow on the commanders armour I find that all yellow armour is a bit overpowering. Now I know how an Imperial Fist feels

Post by: Rose_Mountainz
I agree about the yellow poping a bit to much, but I also agree that yellow stripes could mark officer status, think itwould look cool. And the new improved white armour looks amasing!

I like the white armor! it looked great IMO

If they are going to be based in mud then the dirty white suits for sure, just be careful not to splatter it on too thick

Post by: Commander Cain
Thanks guys!
Largeblasttemplates- I will definitley be using the white armour on other figures, it was just a little too overpowering for my tastes.
Balckhand- I shall take your advice! ATM the armour is incredibly smooth, the pics make it look a little lumpy.
Looking forward too 15cm of snow!! No school=moar painting!

OK, got a pretty nice conversion to show you all. Its is a BA apothecary in termie armour.
AOBR body, Deathwing legs and right arm, LOTD axe, devastator head, flamer canister and a metal stick
I still have to fix the connection between the waist and upper body and also smooth out a few parts.
This guy will become part of my command squad (including the termie librarian and the termies with NMM gold heads)
Hope you like!!!

nice idea ,never seen a termie apothecarie before. that spike is good!

It's another busy day at the workbench. I have base-coated the apothecary, chopped some marines up and given them a far less static pose.
The white is supposed to be finished but I am not that happy with it. Any helpfull suggestions on how to do a battle damaged white?
Here he is with the rest of the honour guard
I have been working on livening up some quick snap SM from the old battle for Magragge set. Basically, chop of the head and throw another on on
I also added some better weapons and some BA symbols throughout. Special thanks to hcordes for the helmets
Models look very blobby in these pics but they are better IRL
The darth sidious of space marines
Thanks for looking!

Here we go, I had to wait till the morning to get some decent lighting. Even so, the pics are not that great but you get the idea. Got a few little bits to touch up like the eyes and skin but for the most part he is all done Improvements or suggestions??? I am thinking of painting up a ratling or two today so I had better be going (never used that moticon before!) Finished the ratling. His cloak will blend in nicely into the base when it is finished

Don't feel bad, the lack of answers is probably due to the holiday season and all that, liking your work but I am afraid I have no idea how you could paint the battle damaged white, its got to be one of the hardest colours IMHO

No problmemo scrazza, you are not the only one with exams
So, I finished the final ratling. All together the gang took exactly 360 days to paint (I may have slacked off a bit in the middle )
I tried to give his skin a sunburnt look, I hink it needs a few finishing touches adding before I a pleased with it.
Peekaboo!
Here is some pics of the rest of the gang...
I just noticed that this guy is staring unnervingly into the camera, creepy.
And there you have it. 360 days of hard work (or something like that)

Hey Cain, some interesting stuff since I last checked in. Love the weathered armour on the guard, looks ace. Nice looking termie apothecary, unfortunately I can't give any suggestions on plain white, let alone damaged white.
Space hobbits look really cool, good job there

Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been building all the 40k that I got for my birthday yesterday. Got some incredible stuff! A baneblade, space marine battleforce, FW DKOK engineers, mole launcher and command squad as well as IG regimental advisors (although one of the figures was missing when I got the box so I will have to send off for that)
Time to break out the superglue and start work on those marines. I think I will purchase a set of 5 SM legs to go with the set as that is all you need to make another 5 marines I am thinking of getting it from the warstore unless anyone knows of a better bitz shop?
As for the baneblade, it is going to converted to have plenty of super detailing and I am using the FW masterclass book (also from my b-day) to paint it to my best possible standard.
Looks like this guy might have his work cut out for him (arms are supposed to be on the wrong way round because I prefer how it looks)
WIP pics tomorrow...

Wow thats quite the load! Happy Birthday! late! You are so lucky Baneblade!? Ugh im jealos! IM excited to see what you do with it! ARe you going to magnetize it?

Post by: Commander Cain
Wow I hate mold lines!
OK, here is what is on the painting table (that I have constructed so far)
I have made up a 5-man squad of beakies from the SM battleforce as there are just about enough bits to make them.
Another 10-man squad is being built after removing the said mold lines...
There are also some gretchin waiting to be painted up (can't decide whether to make them part of a grot rebellion and make them a counts-as IG squad)
And last but not least, the Baneblade. I am going to try and add a lot more small details to it and maybe magnetize it if I can be bothered
(sorry about the blurry pics, the camera was acting up a bit)
And you can not get a baneblade without first taking this iconic picture!
Now all I need to do is paint all this lot...

I think I am going to go with blood angels so that they match the rest of my army. I recently bought some GW washes as people are alway going on about them. (should the beakie vets have gold helmets or not?)

@Cain
I would say the Sargent should but not all of them maybe gold insignias but pure gold i dont know about. I love the beaks also! The Dark angel beak one looks soo cool! and about the washes lets just say i coat some devlan mud wash over my men and they go from mediocre painting to thats actually pretty good i would for sure reccomend them.

Got an idea for your grotz, you can include them in your imperial guard army as penal legion. Imagine captured grotz charging thowards the enemy driven on by the guardsmen. They could work as a good distraction or mine sweepers at least! Or if nothing else the enemy can waste their ammo on them.
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
Fantastic idea! I am using that for sure I can imagine it now, grotz pulling themselves along with chains dragging on their feet... Nice one rose!

Having a very hectic day today. I had to clean up the house as some people were coming round to see if they wanted to buy it (it will be so nice to live in a house that does not have a FOR SALE sign outside ) Not to worry, I still got some hobby stuff done today despite having a foul cold since lunchtime. E're we go!
After seeing some amazing grot rebellion conversions, I decided to begin a diorama in their honour. I knew that it would be something to do with the grots turning on their overseer and what better way than making a Supa Grot to beat him up!
This is just a mock-up to show how the general scene will play out. Let me know what you think!
Just to clarify things. There is a grot in salvaged SM armour with a kustom jetpack which will be erupting flames. He is being steered around by a remote-control tau drone piloted by another grot.
Thanks for looking!

Iz it a burd? iz it a plane? NO, itz Supa Grot!
Looks like thats going to be a funny scene when its all put together. You need to paint an S on the grot's chest armour/
The control mechanism for the Supa Grot is really cool and I like the way that it looks like a joystick.
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
I was thinking cotton but I am sure someone had a really good method for fire on this site (searching now!)
Gathering Storm- I was already thinking of putting a big "G" on one of the shoulderpads but "S" would be very cool also!
The Tau drone is going to be called "Mr Happy" as I will paint a big smiley face on it (who could resist )

Cotton soaked in PVA might work.
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
wolfshadow- Yes, that could work also. I think that I will experiment with different ideas until I find the right one.
Finished making the SM army so I thought that I would post up some pics of it.
The Sergeant is a kitbash between an assault squad, command frame and with an IG head.
I have some DC bits scattered amongst the troops to add a little bit of flavour to them.
Nothing special about the Rhino apart from it has a Baneblade antenna on the side.
Now all I need to do is paint them
Christmas soon. It looks like I am going to have my hands full for quite a long time! Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh. BTW, I finished the SM scouts but did nothing special to them so did not bother to show them on the blog.

Working on the supa grots armour. I am going for a worn and well used suit of silver similar to Necron armour. So far it is looking very nice and I will post up some pics when I am feeling a little better (Nasty cold and headache)
Also, if anyone has some good ideas on another grot rebellion based diorama I would love to hear it as I think I will have a go at another one soon enough.

Monkeytroll- Thanks! More dioramas methinks, they are great fun.
Commissarkhaine- Thanks! Red and gold eh? Well, that may be coming soon...
HF Izanagi- Marines with renaissance masks, that would be very cool. Thanks!
neil101- Thanks!
Sageheart- Thanks! It does not feel like only three months that I have been on dakka showing off all this stuff.
Trying out some OSL as people seem to be getting very good at it and I don't like being left out in the cold
Still a lot more to do, but your comments and suggestions are very important at this moment.
As you can see, I have used only ice blue and a little space wolves grey for the lighting. Do I need to add darker blues?
Also, all my finished models are all in the dakka gallery under "Commander Cain" Check them out!

Love the IG head on the squad sgt.
Also, a Baneblade
Clean or weathered?
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
BBL- I am going to do the Baneblade FW style, this means a tonne of weathering, airbrushing and super detailing. Now that I have the FW masterclass book I will probably start picking up other bits like oil paint, weathering powders and the like.
BTW, does anyone know the best way to get a nice smooth basecoat using sprays/airbrush? And if so what sprays or paints are the best to use? I have 163 models waiting to be painted and it is not even Christmas yet!
Here is the almost finished banner bearer. (Obviously he still needs the banner fixing on).
Don't you just love non-metallic metal!
And finally a good picture of the lightning claws.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hmm. My banner bearer is missing a thumb! Automatically Appended Next Post: I also added some gore to this termie (seeing as he is holding a tyranid spine in his hand )
