Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2011/02/28 18:52:15

Post by: sennacherib

So for years i have been working on a deathgaurd army. I am a full time student who also has a job and three other armies so things have been progressing slowly for the last five years. I love to convert stuff and have found that competative gaming is really turning me off from the play aspect of the hobby as a whole. Since i am not rich enough to just run out and buy models whenever i need to be able to upgrade to the newest edgiest net list available, i decieded to check out from game play for a while and just work on building up an army that looks good and that i enjoy from a visual and fluff perspective.
what follows will be my DG conversions as well as sporadic pics of stuff that i have already assembled and painted. I do not paint the glowing green style of nurgle, instead i have been painting what amounts to the formal Deathgaurd legion paint scheme with the exception of the white on the helms. This is plauge fleet Est. so this minor deviation is fleet specific.
since i dont have much money most of what you see pictured here i won in tournaments over the last five years. yep. thats how long i have been at this particular army. Right now i am working on some terminator. didnt have the legs so i am converting them out of old blackreach stuff. and so it begins.
this is always the scariest part of any conversion when the big clippers come out.
[/img]
here are most of the legs, minus the seals of the false emperor
[img]
haveing done some initial GS work. there is a lot more to do with pin vice drill etc.
this is one of the more or less finished termis. I converted his combi melta and the crows beak/scythe he is swinging. legs are from real termis i won in a tourni not long ago.
[/img]
as well as a pic of the same crows beak weilding termi with the Nurgle Icon bearer who weilds a Combi Heavy flamer, powerfist i converted up for him. Note. The Icon bearer is rocked back in this picture on his base, i repositioned him so he is forward and now looks way better.
here is the blackreach dread i converted to be DG. it had a melta but in my current list the melta is pretty scary as it could vap. my landraider or a plauge marine easily. so i converted up this ML instead.
[/img]
and finally a little bling... showing a slightly photoshopped pic of my dread from the front facing down a mouthy imperial git... One of my own i might add.

I'm impressed with the GS work-it's smooth and convincing as all hell. And big ups for school, work and the hobby. I'm on my way to starting an Eldar Army as well, so we'll see how that goes!

More pics please!

I just figured out that the legs that come with the blackreach set are ever so slightly smaller and shorter than the GW ones. Hmmm. what to do. i am of the mind to either give up now while i am ahead (herasy) or to forge onward (maybe stupidity). one solution is to glue on lots of bling and to use GS to add a tiny bit of hight to their boots ala shoes for short people.
Answers dakka .... i need answers. where are you poeple...

Post by: sennacherib

here are a few update pics. since the legs really are about 3mm shorter than the standard, i am going to add a thin sole to the bottom of the boot as well as a spacer inside the the joint between the torso and the hips.
This just shows the detail i am trying to put on some of the legs. Plauge censure's. I wish i had thought to put these on the others but, such is life.
[/img]
I am not sure if these legs are bulky enough up by the knees but its going to be a big task to resculpt them with the larger style knee plates that traditional chaos termis have...
this is another shot of another view of a third set of legs

i am pretty happy with them overall but the Knees being slightly less bulky, what do you think dakka.

Looks cool.

As far as bulky knees go though, I would say that it depends upon what's happening on top.

You need to make sure you are building them in context with what you have to put up the top.

Cheers

I have forge world bits that i am planning on hooking them up with. I did a minor resculpt on the Nurgle terminator srgnts head, giving him a bit of a horn growing out of his head. That way none of my sargents looks the same. I think i have figured out some of my dilema with the size of the legs. they had seemed like they were to small, but ... though they are shorter that is pretty easy to fix. By sculpting their boot soles a little thicker i have given them the necessary height. So... Progress.
Still to come.
10 lesser demons. I am still torn between just buying the command and regular packs of the plauge bearers, or doing a resculpt of zombie gaurdsman.
Landraider
5 more plaugemarines as well as 4 with alternative weapons. Namely melta and flamer since my current list has 4 plasmaguns.
Superheavy...
all i really have to do is a few minor touches around his leg armor, and his sheild. His other leg greave fell off, but i have since found it and reattatched it. I just havent been inspired. this latest push should be motivation enough.

Glad yall like the work. I have been really busy with study for two tests this week. One of ems today and the next is thursday. school just sucks the life out of gameing. However. i have still been plugging away and i finished most of the GS on those first 5 terminator. Pics will follow later today. Cheers.

Ok,. done with classes for now. just a quick update on the legs. I finished with the GS and assembly of the termis. they pretty much match the other five that i already have and am in the process of painting except that this unit has a heavy flamer and 2 combi flamers, chain fist and powerfist, where as the other unit has combi melta but the same weapons loadout otherwise. I had to convert the combi flamer and one chainfist out of imperial bits. THe combi flamer turned out well. im really happy with it. they are pictured in some ruins i have been working on for a stalingrad style muddy city ruin set i have been working on. I have tons of terrrain but finally decieded on a theme. the rest of my stuff is just going to get passed on to someone else. Hope you enjoy.
BTW. the spikes were easy to sculpt but the plauge censure on the legs were a headache.

Just a periodic update. I am including some pics of the stuff that i have already finished for the army.
the rhino i won a local painting contest with which gave me a big boost motivation wise to continue plugging away at this. i think i used the cash from the win to buy a land raider that i still have to assemble.

The greater demon was my first full sculpt for 40k. I have some other crummy pictures of it in my profile but this is a way better pic of it. I was shooting to make it look like a smaller version of the greater unclean one. it turned out pretty well. i was happy with the result. Now having seen some of the conversions that people have made with their LOTR trolls i am thinking that in the near future i might resculpt the three trolls that i scupted long ago for my LOTR goblin army and make them demons....

Ok. so you all have sort of voted. Two people liked the Daemon Prince so i will finish GS'ing him and adding the last little bits so he will be done in a week or two. that will end my longest stretch at procrastination ever for me and a model. he has been on my shelf for probably a year and half. almost done the whole time. so It is next. BTW i am trying to think of a good name for him. I was thinking Syphalis.

@ Tallmanitm Thanks. he is one of my favorites too. I just mounted him up on a base with a nurgling hanging out right behind his legs. there are three termis with nurglings on the bases.
Ok. Just time for a quick update.
I have been painting the first of five nurgle termis that i already constructed on regular chaos termi legs, so here are a couple pics of the Sgt. nearly completed painting wise. I just need to seal it with matt coat and give it a little more detail work and he is done. Wheeew.
also after much debate mentally i began greenstuffing the interior of my land raider. Drilled millions of holes as well to complete the multilayered decay look. No landraider would be complete without a full resculpt of the exhaust stacks at the back of the vehicle so i cut those off with a hot knife and then scraped off much of the grill on the assault ramp, prior to Greenstuffing a set of huge teeth on the front. Thats gonna help set the whole model apart from the rest. I am also going to string some cables down from the engin and have them hanging around on the inside of the hull. I thought about GS. spikes coming up through the floor but ... what a pain in the butt GS the texture of the floor into peeling back plating would be so i figured i already have enough on my plate for now.
Lastly... i went ahead and bought 5 plaugebearers and the plaugebearer command box to use as lesser demons so i wont have to rely entirely on plaugemarines for troops. the plan is to drive a unit of 7 plaugemarines in the raider strait into my enemies teeth. then deepstike typhus and 10 termis, 10 lesser demons and a greater demon into the enemy lines. if anything it will be fun.

Great to see the effort going into the interior of the LR too.

So i finally am done with school (enough) that i can work on my Nurgle army. There is a 700 pt tourni coming up that i am going to play my deathgaurd in for their first official time in a game EVER. Yep thats right i have only played them one other time and that was as part of a Apoc battle where i was using a lot of borrowed figs. THis tourni will be their official debut. SO in order to field them i needed to have my demon prince painted enough to field as he will be leading my army.

SO its been a little while but as with all projects that i start they move in fits and bursts of energy. My land raider and my terminator squads are the first that are feeling the shift in attitude. I spent a couple of hours working on adding the mark of nurlge to the outside pannels of my land raiders. Hundreads of holes drlled with a pin vice drill and lots of scaping on the sides and edges so that there is lots of evidence of corrosion and wear. Yeahhh. done for the most part.

Then the grill. I was/am sculpting the beginnings of a toothy grin onto the front assault doors of the Raider. I am torn on a name for the raider but having been thinking of calling it Nurgles Maw. The bells that are hanging along the front from chains ring with the sceams of the dying and lost. The forgeworld doors, what can be said but thanks FOrgeworld. Your products are awesome. Love em.

The final shot is of the terminator that bears the mark of nurgle. He is also equipped with a powerfist with a heavy flamer grafted to the bottom. The squad that he is a member of shall be known as The Hearlds of Typhus.

Comments welcome.

So i am getting more work done. Been rushing a bit because i have to get a landraider, predator and 7 lesser demons plus 5 terminator done by the end of the month so i can enter them into NorCon. Yeahhhhh. so first off. The predator that i need to provide some fire support. It has preherasy sponsons and came primed black so i have been scraping and drilling like mad. Nice that it was already assembled and avalable for the low low price of 15$, SCORE. Should i strip it of the black primer or just paint over it. what do you think dakka.

i have been painting like mad to get the raider done. HAVe to finish the interior. all i have to do really is finish up the roof since most of the engine is finished to the point where i will feel good about it. I didnt like how the back and the floor are detailed but you can totally see the ceiling through the front asssault doors and there is NO detail. Harumph. Where was the detail oversight commity on this one guys, come on. SO this necessitated the installation of a falling panel that is being pushed down by the demonic spirit that has infested the Raider. I am working in 105 degree temps today so in order to work on the tenticles and get them just right i have to cool the Green stuff in the freezer so it wont just sink and go limp. Hmmmm. So the end result is this thing. The last shot shows more or less how it will look installed. I am pretty happy with the overall feel of the whole thing. Anyways. two tanks, 7 lesser demons and 5 terminator in one month. we shall see if i can pull it off. plus i need to finish the display base. cant forget that.
Questions and comments appreciated.

I have actually reached a point where I am now considering using the Army Painter method of painting....basecoat green, color in other areas, dip, anti gloss....

...which im going to give a go regardless, already in the process of nominating a few helpless volunteers.

Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2011/07/03 11:22:29

Post by: taffiarti

Are you planning of doing anything further with the tentacle idea? I think interior is great and ads real life and character to the tank. I just wonder if you intend to extend it further through the exposed hatch on the roof? I can imagine it would be a wonderful model given your skills, but a real pain to transport!

Post by: sennacherib

I HATE that you suggested that taffiarti. Just kidding, actually its a pretty awsome suggestion. I just might do that but it will depend on how much time i have to wrk on all of this stuff. I need it done by the end of the month for NorCon. Time will tell.

So just a quick update. though i have been working severall hours every day it seems like this project is getting nowhere. ahhhrrrrgg. The curse of CHaos. Oh well. So i am soaking the predator in simple green to strip the paint. This has been going on for days now. Soon it will be ready for the tender ministrations of a tooth brush. In the mean time I have been working on the landraider of Doom. Thanks taffiarti for the suggestion. I did add some tentacles poking out the hatch on the roof and it added nicely to the overall apeal of the project. I finally finished assembly of the raider, without instructions it was a little bit sketchy. Especially since it was my first land raider ever. With close to 5000 pts of ultramarines i never bought a raider but nurgle is blessed. So ... Lots of GS action still has to happen. I have been working on the top and sides. Lots of boils and pustules. Later today maybe i plan to install the plauge vents in place of the smoke stacks on the back of the raider and then i plan on also adding some oil drums with hoses leading into the engin area.

The terminators continue to be a headache. I need suggestions on this stupid banner. I know that the mark of nurgle that is on the banner is NOT perfect so i am going to go back through and re address the top circle. however the overall appearance of the skins that it is made out of is not good. any suggestions please.

These all look superb, for the banner might I suggest going back over it and sculpting pustules on the skin. Maybe if your up to it, sculp a nurgling hanging onto a symbol of Nurgle on the banner top. It could be the banner is just a pain in the arse. I used one of them before for my old Plague Zombie Lost and the Damned army and it was just a complete pain to make it work.

How did I not see this yet? Dude your work is AMAZING! The attention to detail on your Land Raider hull shames me! Why didn't I think of that? Pustulent corrosion abounds! Your GS work is perfect. And you paint really well.

Really, I'm embarrassed that I missed this. Subbed and really looking forward to more! Praise Father Nurgle!

On the banner I think Mr Malevolent has some ace ideas. I hesitate to offer any ideas - but here's a few...

A light mud wash might tie it all together, some dried blood at the stitch points could look cool too, maybe 3D the nurgle symbol with greenstuff - given your skills that should be easy.

Cheers Laney

Thanks for the suggestions guys. There will be no more GS on this banner though since it and the othe 5 termis have to be done by the 30th. Also i have to finish the predator, 7 lesser demon and the land raider. Ugh. also the battle board to display them on. However.... I LOVE the nurgling swingin on the pole and the 3d nurgle symbole idea. I need to fashion a second mark of nurgloe for my other termnator squad and one for the land raider. If i have time i will make a similar banner for the top of the land raider. all the suggestions were great.

O2Laney... you know i think that the mud wash and blood flecks here and there would totally work. maybe today before work i can work on it a bit. Thanks.

Wow, I love that Land Raider inside!!!

And I am especially impressed by the smooth sculpts on the outside... Could you explain how you did that? I know I will probably never reach such precision, but a few tricks might help! Those pus-filled bubons are awesome!

As for the herald... I was thinking of GS too, but you already put that aside...

@Yggdrasil...
The puss filled growths on the outside of the raider are really easy to achieve. Just take small bits of GS and roll them into balls. Wait a day or so till they have completely hardened. Then apply a small blob of GS to your tank, Smooth it out with wet scupting tools. I smear the edges with the back of a tool that is very much like a small spoon. Cut a few of your premade hardened GS balls in half and gently push them into the face of the putty on your tank. I then use stuff like an automatic pencil lead to dimple the surface and make some larger holes where the pustules have ruptured. Finished. Always work with wet tools when using GS.

just a little update here and a shout out of thanks to all who have taken the time to comment and make suggestions. Awsome.
SO i had to take some time off of this project. I am still working on school stuff so i spend about half of my week under water diving and hunting turtles so when i get home i dont really have the energy to do this. However with time passing i NEED to get these done by the end of the month or else i am going to be fielding my Ultramarines at the upcoming Norcon.

SO in order to make some progress i worked on my lesser demon (plauge bearer) and Plauge himself who is leading sqaud number two into battle. The plaugebearer is almost done. I just have to finish the base and he is pretty much table ready. Plauge is done. I had so much fun putting him together. The blood angels captain whos head rests in his hand and whose stump is firmly planted beneath his boot does not really spell out a hatred for blood angels. It was just a nice color to add some bling to my army. I played Plauge in a game a couple of weeks ago and won against a blood angels player. It was a massacre and in retrospect i should have realised that when he saw all the bits of blood angels glued to the bases that he might take offence. Oh well. SO without further adu...

I'm not really fond of the "I just ripped your head off & I walk on your body" scene, but the Plague Marine model is nicely kitbashed, with nice colours & paint...

In short, I love it on the last pic, a bit less on the previous one...

Great job though!

Thanks all.
@ Laney ~ There are a lot of possesed bitz, some GS on the shoulder pads and lots of pinvise hole drilling. I spent forever drilling some of my marines out.
@ diphranq That helmet is my favorite bit that GW supplies on their CSM sprue. I dont want to use any repeat bits on my Plauge marines so i am going to be forced to GS some new helms that looks similar.

So i am getting some stuff done. for those of you who try to follow my blog, you already know that i work very slowly. Its a process. I have to get inspired about my work, spend time thinking about it and then finally i get a fit of energy and i have a break through. this is one of those moments. I am THIS close to finishing my landraider after months of plugging away at it. all i have to do is finish the teeth on the front and the smoke stacks on the back. Inspiration however is pushing me to mount a fuel drum on the engine cover. It will have some pus lines that will be made out of piano wire going into the engine. The fuel drum you see now is only temporarily stuck on there so you all can see where i am coming from. I also test mounted the banner and actually finished sculpting the first of about 15 plauge vents that will be sprouting from the engine in place of exhaust vents. I will be looting the eariler suggestion to sculpt the hurgle symbol on the banner and i May try to sculpt a little nurgling clingin to it though that really might be pushing it. what do you all think. Feul drum keep it or no. Banner, keep it or no. Plauge vents are there to stay but do you like the designe. I tried to make them look like severed intestines. nuff said.

So i have been slowly plugging away at the green stuff and the additions to my Land Raider. I would like to have it at least primered on the outside by a week from now, though we shall see how that goal sits with the rest of my plans. I added a bunch of plauge vents to the back end of the Raider, and started to GS a predator that i bought used and spent WAY to long stripping. It had 4 layers of paint on it from various owners. Simple green just took forever. That and a toothbrush, toothpicks and a dental tool to get it mostly clean. I also finished another of my lesser demon plauge bearers. I think it looks pretty good but since i havent matt varnished it there are still a few spots that have some shine to them. I also started to add the guitar wire pipes to the raider, and bent its battle standard so it looked like it was waving in the breeze.

So my project is coming along. I failed to do an update recently because i have been busy with school and work. as mentioned previously i usually work on things in fits. I will do a lot of work in a very short time and then i am done for a month or two. Currently i am having a very productive fit.
The predator that i showed off earlier that i had stripped and done a little work on to convert is finally at the base coat stage. I have begun basecoating with army painter so that it saves me hours of trying to paint every nook and cranny. so far i have nothing but good things to say about army painter. its good stuff. Once base coated i wash the whole model in devlan mud. this helps darken the tone of the basecoat and adds shadding to the nooks. After the intitial wash i have been drybrushing the whole model with the next shade up, in this case graveyard dirt. The whiter patches are corpse green, and the darker greens are catachan. this finished the entire model gets a custom wash of a dirty blackish brown that i made up. works nicely to mottle the whole thing and really helps make it look dirty.
without further delay, some pics.

Your totally right, its Actually its no where near done painting. yep. it does need a lot more work. Your right that i still need to fiinish off the lenses, not to mention the dirt on the sides by the tracks, the tracks themselves and all the boils need to be paiinted with dwarf flesh and a few dots of chestnut ink. But yessss.... its coming ... its coming along just fine. Thanks for the props Yggdrasil.

When i get some more work done on it i will be sure to post.

Thanks Skalk. Heres a quick update with some pics of my work on the defiler. Im still torn about weather or not to cut the front two legs off and just build up the torso of my Nurgle demon from the middle section, or to leave it a six legged beast. I guess i will cross that bridge when i get there. I am almost done with drilling out spots on the legs though i am going to do some more work when i finish the green stuff. finally figured out that its best to do the GS first and then drill later. it makes it a lot simpler than drilling a bunch of holes and then GS over them.

I do have a superheavy, it is almost assembled and may eventually make it into the chaos army. Hard to say. I also play ultras and a Superheavy for them would be pretty awsome. Right now the direction i am taking is to try and get enough Nurgle assembled and painted to be able to play in games up to 2000 pts. I have to finish,
Land Raider, close but needs work.
Defitler, need to sculpt body to sit on top in place of "turret"
10 terminatiors need to be finished with painting.
3 Deathgaurd and 4 lesser demon.
also....
Still in the works, a 5 marine havok squad modelled as Darkmechanicum and perhaps a unit of chosen.

Skalk... i checked out your blog and it looks like you are getting a lot done. You have tons of models painted where i have only a few dozens. Last night when i took a break from my Stats class, i managed to get a Plaguebearer painted and this morning i washed another 3 in preparation for their eventual completion. I also got my shipment of Bitz from a lady in florida, and today at the shop i should get the rest that i need to begin working on the only Non - Nurgle army members that i will be fielding. Dark Mechanicum.

The plan is to construct 5 Havoks with 3 AC. the AC are going to be track mounted servitors. I also plan on making a unit of 5 Mechanicum chosen. Points wise i cant see fielding these units with the mark of Nurgle since it would increase their cost by a stupid quantity.

Keep pluggin away Skalk. Later today i will post a shot of the finished Plaguebearer as inspiration. Hopefully it will appease grandfather nurgle.

It's true that I do, but I've been working on it for years. I have a few things left that I want to finish and then it is DONE until a new Codex comes out that adds a new unit that I don't have. I want to eventually have a unit representing every single possible troop choice, up to and including "non-fluffy" units like Bikes and Raptors.

You do really good work. Slow and Purposeful is effective.

Finally time for an update.. I havent got a lot done lately, but i am working on completing enough basic troops that i can so i will be able to field a Painted 1500pt list. Currently i have about 42 plaguemarines but not all are painted. So lacking time i have been working on the Demons. My cheap pt wise unit that i can use to hold objectives. I want them to look a little different each . that wayi can simulate variouse states of putrifaction. I have been experimenting with brass corrosion effects so these are the first for me to try it on. what do you all think of the bells, to bright the blue?
So... without further adu, some pics.

Thanks genom.cor, Skalk for the feedback. I was a little worried about the blue. I used the same tech. on the banner bearer that i have for the squad. I think the banner is coming along nicely.

Incidentally ... i started using a new clear coat. Its called Valspar. It goes on a litttle thick but two coats are unnoticable and i have to say that it produces no detectable change in the color of the mini once it dries. I really dont like the GW flat clear coat. it seems to dull all of the colors that you apply it to. sad. anyways. this stuff is cheaper, about 4$ a can and i got it at Lowes harwear.

Getting more stuff done. I finished the demon squad off. The banner bearer was a total pain in the butt. anyone who has examined the plague bearer command squad should know what i am talking about. the models have random detaill that just blends together. how are we supposed to determine where part of one thing ends and another begins. the slime is used as a connector between bits where sculpting would have been difficult so you end up having to paint odd surfaces that really make the model more difficult. Not sure what to say about the other demon sculpt. it appears to be giving the finger....
So there you go. work actually getting done. enjoy and comments are as usual appreciated as are critique.

No sence in paying to have T 5 on a small group like my havoks. So... rather than have something fully unfluffy and unconverted, i decided to turn those bike models i have into something worthwhile. cant wait to see what they do to a T5, 4+ save critter that is way to big to fit behind any terrain. Your GOING DOWN. Just kidding. My army is vulnerable to hordes so your still going to kick my butt, when are you going to be around for a game.?

Here are some pics of the intial effort. Not sure if i will ever be able to get the regularity i want on the shield that surrounds the shoulder gaurd that i am working on. Cogs are very regular and my effort is well, Not regular. Shall i keep the shoulder gaurd as is or toss this one and give it another shot.

The shoulder pad does look a little irregular, is there any way you can sketch the teeth of the cog out on the pad so they come out mroe evenly.

You might just need to make another go of it, just depends on how up tight you are about perfection.
other than that it looks like the stuff your working on is coming along fire. are you gonna paint the servitor in the colors of Dark admech too,

yeah.... i am not sure about the regularity of that shoulder pad either. i am pretty up tight about this kind of thing(you know me to well). I am probably going to do a complete re build of that one. Glad to have the feedback on this. Still, i havent made any progress on this because i have just been wrestling with school and life. The AdMech servitor is still really fun and exciting project for me to engage in. Any other suggestions that you have for the overall finished project. I am planning at least three of these guys. you cant tell from the picture but that dude has a magnetized weapon so that i can swap it out.

I went ahead and began a total rebuild of the shoulder pad. Not sure how i am going to get perfectly even notches in the side of the little bugger, anyone with some ideas i would reallly appreciate hearing them. for now i am going to just practice on more expendable bits, after all i only have so many cog wheel shoulder gaurds.

I just thought i would post a quick couple of pics of the HW servitor so yall could see how work is progressing. It goes slowly but i am in the process of finishing up the GS work on the track unit. i also began work on the mechadendrites. pics of them to come later.

I do have an idea actually, but I do not know how to explain it exactly. Draw out a circle and then dissect it w/ lines, then place your shoulder pad on top of the "template" and mark off the lines on the plastic, sort of like this:

Apologies for the horrible job, I'm at work.

But the concept is sound I think, and should take care of the issue you are having with spacing the cog grooves.

Yeah, forcing anything can be a real bummer. i read an interview with a pro surfer one time that was very enlightening. he said his job sucked. travel the world and surf the best surf brakes anywhere. that would sound like a dream to me, and GET PAID> duh. seems like the best job possible. He said it makes it way less fun when it is really stormy and ugly out, giant dangerous surf, your tired from the flight in and the day spent surfing and yet you still have to get up pre dawn and go surfing. quite a bit different than painting a 40k figure or two but still relavent.

I have been getting interested in some other conversion projects though. I would like to start another larger scratch build. my last large scale scratch build was a stompa. it turned out really pretty nicely. For this army i was looking at some of the warhound titan plans and thinking that nurgling one of those up would be a lot of fun. I have also pulled out my sculpting putty and about 20 feet of guitare wire and i am contemplating the defiler that i started last month. I want to sculpt a large nurgle demon ontop the defiler ala forgeworlds nurgle defiler conversion kit. It will all come together eventually. I also have a 1000pt tourni i need to get ready for next month. not sure what i will be playing but likely something nurgly...we shall see.

Anyways. i have lots of ideas and just need the motivationg. Turkey day set me back two days of study for school, so this weekend i am going to have to dedicate myself more to my work. Update to come as soon as i get off my keister.

That Surfer story is one of the reasons I didn't "follow my dream" in 1995 to open a game store. I would have wound up hating something I love as a hobby.

You have some great ideas and the skill to pull any of them off. I would like to see your Defiler, that would be pretty awesome.

Whatever you do, do it for fun.

Ok. Sorry no pics to post today. Tomorrow though i promise to get some pics up in the evening. I work pretty slowly but i have a upcoming Apoc. game and its my boys from town against the big guns from the niehboring city. Its a chaos only Apoc. and we are battling for control of the local bragging rights. Khorn and nurgle on their side. Our side is Slaneesh, Tzneech and Nurgle. I have been working my butt off on a big project. Every day i spend at least one hour doing GS work, grinding and drilling.

What i have learned so far.
If you work in a colder climate, GS is less cooperative. To maximize workablility i began to use a regular bulb in a shop light right over my subject to heat up the GS some. It really helps to keep it workable. I also fill a jar with hot water and keep my tools in it so that the GS softens when they touch it. This has really increased my ability to work with the putty. I would heat my house up some if i had any internal heating but i dont and the space heaters waste energy and they take a while to heat up a room. Sunday if it is still raining i plan on getting as much done as i can on this "project". And tomorrow some pics will be forthcoming. Its my largest project yet and without giving things away, its pictured early on in this thread, half assembled. See you all tomorrow.

Post by: sennacherib

Thank you Skalk, Cain and Menziez. Work slowed there to a crawl. I had all winter break to do something but instead i got 10+ hours of sleep a day and i really did nothing at all productive. Whatever. Breaks from school are for maximal lazy time. That is all. Now that school is back in i have a little motivation to get things rolling, not to mention the upcoming Apoc Game. Gotta be ready in time.
I have to complete 9 termies in the next 18 days. I also have to paint 2 Plague marines, 1 demon prince, and 1 ???????
Drum roll please. What i have been working on. My convertable Shadowsword. I spent about two hours grinding on it trying to work all the available hard edges down some. There is still a lot of work to do but a dremel tool is a modellers best freind. As i construct and GS i have been careful to make it so that i can still convert it between any of the 6+ versions of shadow sword that are currently available via datafax. The struts that are glued to the inside of the hull are not my method of doing this, but rather I looted them from another modeller whom i believe is french. It was a pretty easy to do conversion. the only hard part is all the forethought necessary so that i dont grind or GS something so that the bitz dont fit.
I was also very lucky to have an extra large bitz box. Within its shadowy recess father nurgle blessed me with two chimera turrets which i modified so that i can use them to swap out sponson weapons, that way i can easily feild the Banehammer which is pictured. There is still a lot of GS work to do as i said earlier. Not to mention at least another hour or so of drilling out little holes followed by glueing clumps of sand here and there to represent corrosion. anyone wishing to try this should search for the finest sand they can find. Sand without irregularly large grains. It makes a more uniform appearance. I also hope to construct a cruxified blood angel in keeping with my blood angel casualty theme, on the front grill of the tank as well as a bunch of plague censors affixed to various plates. The Rear grill of the tank is going to be a nightmare of exhaust tubes and then the funnest part, the shrine i have some choice ideas for. Thanks again for viewing this very slow moving blog. Skalk your persistance at your work is commendable. Thanks too for the earlier shout out.
ANY suggestions and comments are appreciated.

I like the Banehammer, but I think that adding on really, really big sore to the front portion of the main turret, right next to the main gun, would be sweet. Like, one Zit to rule them all.

Also, you could have a panel or two open on the tank, and have a bunch of Nurglings doing "repair work" on damaged areas. For ideas on sculpting nurglings, go to Warseer, and look for Dee's chaos army of Mammoth Intended Proportions in the Fantasy blogs section. The nurglings he does uses extra bitz with greenstuff wrapped around them basically. They look pretty good, and have tons of character.

Thanks GiraffeX and Brotheralexos.
I am going to be doing a lot more posting for at least the next twenty days while i ready my army for the apocalypse game that i have on the 18th. Like i said earlier i am on a strict 1hr per day minimum schedule of just GS work to try and keep the pace.

@ Brotheralexos.
I havent checked out Dees army on warseer but i will. Thanks for the heads up. I have a bunch of those little nurglings but sculpting my own is the way to go man. I also like the idea about the main gun. I have to make it so that i can replace the plates to the right of the gun, but to the left hand side it is already glued down. WE shall see what i can do but i might be able to get some more pics up later today, though i have a pretty busy schedule.
One nurgling is deffinitly going in the rear shrine area by the corpse in a cage.

Thanks Magnus the red. If i ever decide to sell my army, you will get it if you want it, thats for sure.
For everyone who is unaware, Magnus the red has been one of the biggest driving forces pushing me from Ultramarines and into chaos. He plays Tzneech and has constantly been feeding me subversive literature and a word in the ear. He also gave me the banehammer for my 39th birthday as well as a host of the plague marines AND the winged demon prince pictured below. So, loyalists are slowly loosing ground do to the efforst of Tzneech to eat away at the underpinings of the loyalist base.

Just figured i would post another quick update.
Below is the Hearld of Typhus. I have been painting on it some. Its still only just approaching table top quality but in order to play in this upcoming APOC game, i have to have it at least well enough painted to be able to feild it next to my existing troops. The hatches and a few of the details on the sides like the bells have still got to be painted as wethered brass with blue corrosion. Other than that it has a hour or two left to get it table top ready and maybe five or six hours before i can clear coat it and call it done.

The Demon Prince has wings (not sure what make cause Magnus the Red gave me the model) and since warp time got the nerf i think i will give it winds of chaos or Nurgles rot. Probably the rot so i can use it more effectively in melee and against hordes. I have to get this fully completed in the next 20 days. this, and a few other models. I really have a lot of work on my hands. anyways.

Please write Magnusthered and harass him to start his own blog here. He has an amazing looking Tzneech army as well as an all forgeworld chaos gaurd army. the more pressure we put on him to get a blog the better. Fill his mail box with the voice of chaos. We commands it.

In keeping with my 1 hour minimum of GS work that i have been doing a day to get the Behemoth ready for battle, I have been trying to document my progress. I had sworn off spikey bitz in my army, but for this particular tank, since it is at the head of the armored collumn, i decided that spikey bitz and some of the more over the top stuff like excessive chains would be ok. SO, here's some progress, minus todays GS work.

Do you think you are going to get er done in time for the upcoming Apoc game.
You are planning on putting some chains or something on those sides? I remember you saying something about that. i wasnt sure if you were still going to follow through. ?

I really really hope i can get it done in time to be able to play it in that Apoc battle. with 17 days left to work on it i think i can get it done. I am really going to have to paint like mad though.

And yes, i think i am going to be adding some more chains to it, but what does dakka think. More chains and bits, or is less more.

Thanks Skalk.
I have not made the kind of progress that i have wanted to complete on it. Yesterday i did nothing with it, GS wise. I did fool around with it some but i am just beat from all the GS work and school. Today i did what may be the last of three GS efforts before i am done with the GS, aside from the plague smoke stacks at the back. Those will take at least till this sunday if i work extra hard to complete them. Then i still have about two hours of dremmeling to do, as well as about an hour of gluing sand on it to simulate corrosion. If all goes as planned i should be able to post a primed picture of it on Monday.

Well. Made a lot of progress today. i dremmeled and scraped the hull in mad fashion trying to eliminate many of the hard edges. I also started work on some of the plague stacks at theback of the tank. Done with converting by monday and then primed. Nuff said.
Q&C welcome

Thanks Prime.
I plan on doing a couple of layers of plague stacks so that they stretch up from the bottom of the engine to the top of the engine compartment. There will likely be around a dozen of them. Once i get a few down it will be a lot faster going.
The front fenders of the tank are getting decked out with a bunch of plague censors in the shape of a Nurgle symbol. Should be a pretty easy sculpt. Still gotta add a little more corrosion but at the rate that i am going it should be ready for painting right on schedule.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again, the attention to tiny detail you labor with on your vehicles (specifically the corrosion pox marks) is amazing and makes an incredible amount of difference. The GS is as excellent as always.

A very fine Death Guard force you have here, Papa Nurgle should give you a random Chaos Gift.

@ Skalk and Lictor, thanks for the , it helps motivate the continued maddness that i am engaged in.
SO i am finally ready to prime. Right on schedule but at the expence of time better spent doing school work etc. well, lets be real. Nothing is more important than working on 40k RIght. JK.
Finished up the exhausts, plague censors, and added the sand/corrosion that you see in reddish brown here and there. I use the reddish brown paint mixed with PVA because sometimes it flakes off a bit and this way the color is a close enough match to rust that it doesnt make me want to repaint it right away. Helps to mitigate the inherent weakness entailed by this technique. By Monday i hope to have new pics posted of it primed etc.

@ Nidious~ THere was a long mental debate over the chains and spikes. Since nothing in my army has any spikes and the chains are really only found on my land raider, and there they serve the purpose of being rigging points for the dooom bells, the spikes and chains nearly didnt make it onto the model.

I did finally decide to put em on there since this was to be the flagship of my army. I also felt it should represent, resplendant in all the glory of nurgles finest. Thats why the pair of banners etc. I would still really like to put some bells on it but i cant find a place where they wont just feel gratuitous.

Thanks for the feedback. Next time i face you, your grey skins are going to be taking a pummeling.

I really like your "less is more" approach to GS (I may have even said that before in this thread) and instead focus on smaller detail that really stands out when grouped together.

At some point in the next year or so I'm hoping to clear my decks enough to try something like this. Not for quite a while, though. I have so much on my "to do" list that I'm beyond overwhelmed. Ha.

@ Skalk. Thanks dude. I sometimes have mixed feelings about this approach when i see other peoples work. Some people have done an amazing job with the application of large quantities of detail to smal areas. We all have our own approach which is what makes this kind of work so fun. I appreciate the as always.

Just a quick update. Primed and ready for painting.
should be able to get it done in the next 12 days though i doubt very much i will be able to finish the demon prince, the defiler or the 5 termis i was supposed to get to. Harumph.

Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2012/02/08 18:37:38

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe

Nice sharp lines on the paint!

I understand the "mixed feelings". I know my Death Guard are unique and stand out on the sea of olive-drab armor, but sometimes I wish I'd gone for the darker / gritter look instead of the bilious caustic poison look. I absolutely know I cut corners and rush projects at the end because they stress me out when they are stuck between 50% and 90% done, that's where so so so many of my models are at right now and I'm convinced I'll never finish any of them. I know that isn't true and I've proven time and again on my Death Guard blog that even if it is months later almost everything I've touched and assigned to this project has been completed... but to what degree? I skipped detail here, messy paint job there, and settled for "good enough". Not bashing my painting and modeling skills, I know my "good enough" is pretty decent. I fall short of my own expectations sometimes.

Also a quick update- I bought the APOC and APOC-Reloaded books this last weekend. $15 for the set! I REALLY want a Super Heavy now! Maybe two or three! Great. Another project looms. Ha.

Where did you get those bits? I havn't seen the caged skeleton before....

Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2012/02/16 00:02:08

Post by: sennacherib

Just a quick update. got the majority of it base coated. now on to the dry brush, wash, dry brush stage. if i can get it mostly done today then finishing it by sat should be doable. It has to be table ready as this apoc game is being advertised on the G3 events Facebook website and i dont want to dissapoint.

@ Mxwlimdr in all honesty i have no idea what set the caged skelton is from.. . a freind gave me a heap o bitz and that was in there. whenever i run across some bit that would be perfect i set it aside. My only guess would be the Giant model that they make for fantasy. as for GS skills. dont worry. what i did dosnt take much skils. if you have a little GS already, you can experiment on a spare piece of plasicard. To make the boils and pustules, just start by making a whole slew of little tiny balls of GS. smaller than a BB. let them harden over night, Next step. put a small amount of GS on some experimental plasitcard. flatten it out leaving a little mound in the middle. spread it out and use the back of the spoon shaped tool i pictured below to smooth the edges of the GS till it thins out to almost nothing. Next you want to cut a few of those little balls of gs you made the night before in half. press the halved spheres into the GS with the domed side facing out at irregular intervals. they look better when they are kinda clumped up with a few outliers. more like a real infection. then use the butt end of the paint brush and the pointy part of a toothpick to dimple the rest of the surface. i use the toothpic to make little crater by just poking the tip in and then swirling it in every increasing circles to open the GS up like a freshly popped zit. remember. only work with wet tools and a toothpic soaked in water remains non stick for a while.

Spent the day yesterday trying to get the banehammer ready, not to mention the landraider and predator that were featured earlier in the thread. Everything is coming together. In order to play any of my stuff in the upcoming G3 event, it has to be painted. I wont be able to get the banehammer fully painted, but it will at least be base coated and table ready.
there is still so much to do its ridiculous. I still have to add mud and grime to all of my vehicles, paint the banners etc. but as long as they look nice on the table i can use them. The bane hammer is getting there. Later today i will post some pics after i paint on some of the little bitz on the side. For now i have school....

@Bla_Ze Thanks for the props on the GS etc. I do have some of the stuff to work with oils and i actually may on this big tank. However i havent really done it in the past so i have just been sticking to what i know.
@ mxwllmdr - I got an A on my calc exam so the pressure and stress was worth it.
@ Nrljm Thanks for the props. THis has been a huge project. I never really wanted to play chaos until some of the guys i used to play with bought me a box of plague marines and got me started on this whole bloomin mess.

@ Everyone. I really dont know where the skeleton in the coffin thing came from. Anyone have ideas. Two of your number have asked where i got it and from what set and all i can say is that it came in a big bag of bits so i have no idea. Really. Anyone who does, can you post here for the edification of your fellow dakka-ites.

SO tomorrow was cutting it close. basically i was just able to to the most basic paint job. Both the banehammer and the Landraider have a couple of days of work each to dry brush and paitn everything to the level that i want. However they are done enought that i will be able to feild them tomorrow in the battle for Gothimos Prime, a G3 event. Instead of the planned upon 3200pts i am only able to field 2500pts but my felllow slannesh and tzneech cultists will be numbering in the tens of thousands each. wish us luck.

I could have gotten a lot more done but i have been lazy. Did stuff outside of the hobby like get a job with the National Parks Service, got a BS degree in Biology that i finish in two and a half months, and got to spend a lot of time playing games. Tomorrow at the game i will take a bunch of pics and post them here at least by sunday. That way all ye loyal followers of nurgle will be able to see Plague Fleet Est in action.

Tomorrow at the game i will take a bunch of pics and post them here at least by sunday. That way all ye loyal followers of nurgle will be able to see Plague Fleet Est in action.

Grats on the NPS job. which park are you located at?

@ Galorn.... I got a job at Yosemite. Yep. Bomb.

SO today we had the epic 69,000 pt battle, the finest in Chaos on Chaos Action anywhere in the northstate of California. The G3 community always puts on an epic event and today was no slouch. Forces Loyal to Prince Dionysius of the Pyre, of whom i am one; ambushed the ruleing planetary elite Punisher Lord of Mortals Killion Vauk of the World Eater as he and his forces made their way through a mountain range. Terrain consisted of a host of large mountain tops that obscured much of the lines of site on the battle field. We played from 9:30 till well after 6 and managed four complete rounds. Highlights included magnusthered filling his foes deployment zone with 80 pink horrors and then deepstriking 27 flamers of Tzneech into his enemys lines. My doomhammer died on turn two after three combimeltas all rolled pens and then 6's on the damage table, and some other MAJOR carnage to great to recount. Needless to say, the end of the game came with Lord Dionysius and his forces narrowly winning the day, and deamon weapon Blisterfang. anyone interested can find G3 events at...
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gothimos-Game-Group/211036548976644
and see some pics in the following brief recount. And by the way. everyones armies looked amazing. truely it is an honor to play on a field of battle with such beautifully painted models.

Its ok that my Doomhammer ate it early. My greater demon ended up killing my foes character, adding 3pts to our sides total, whilest taking 12 powerfist attacks in return with only 1 wound suffered. Yeah... Pox, the greater demon rocks.

Epic looking showdown in the Chaos wastes!! I dont mind the terrain so much considering it contrasts all the more with the armies, lol. Seriously though, great looking collections there.

for my 1100th post.
Laundry list of things that i am going to finish.
1. 2 (thats right, 2) Vindicators that came by way of Prince Dionysius of the Pyre by way if Dakkas own magnusthered
2. Defiler
3. 5 Terminators
4. Demon Prince with wings.
5. 2 Sorcerer's with the mark of nurgle.
6. Greater Demon (complete sculpt)
Honestly i cant believe what i have accomplished so far. When i spoke with Punisher Lord of Mortals Killion Vauk of the World Eater and he said that he would allow me to play a hand sculpted Greater Demon of Nurgle in one of his games i was so excited. This will be my biggest and most intricate sculpt. To do it justice will be a massive pain like a boil on nurgles very own behind. BUT its going to be a lot of fun. I promise to document the rest of this as it unfolds, starting tomarrow with the posting of the recovery of the first vindicator which (i must appologize) I already started to repaint.

@ Skalk ~ glad to see that you are still lurking around despite a self imposed stricture. Yes... Yosemite job is an A+. It means setting off into the wild blue yonder without solid land in site, but its Yosemite.

So.. my latest project. The pic below is of two Vindicator. The "distressed" looking one was covered in a thick layer of paint and some kind of rubberized compound that had been used as a quick nurgle asset. My buddy gave it to me along with the other vindi with the intention of my actually getting some use out of them. The nurglistic technique didnt match mine, so i scanned dakka and found this thread.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/210/365067.page#3943706
I must say that if you need to strip a model, use the LA Amazing. it really was amazing. way better than simple green.
check out the results... though i dont have a before shot and really wish i did.
anyways..i am slowly going to convert both vindis to my cause. THat way i can rush the enemy line with 2 Vindicator, a LR with Typhhus and a grip of Terminators, as well as a couple of CC Dreads.

Thanks arm chair. I was over at your blog a little bit ago, your off and running on your own titanic project. Things are a little stalled as far as updates go for right now. I loaned my camera to a professor at school and i cant get it back till friday. all is well though. i have been doing some GS work on my vinidicators. some painting needs doing, but for now what i have is what i got. So i have been out of touch for a while. Just finished my Bachelors degree today and in the aftershocks of finals i figured i should at the very least update this thread. I got that vinidcator mostely dialed in for this story match i am part of. SO without delay i present lots of greenstuff. The new technique i am developing for Nurgle corruption is plainly visable on the rear door of the vindicator. Suggestions are appreciated. Next up. painted pics.

Thanks Regnak.
The GS and the other forms of distressing that i have been using on the models are actually one o the most fun parts of the hobby for me. The Hobby aspect is integral to the whole experience.
Future plans for this army include finishing my defiler and sculpting a few more greater demons. Not to mention finishing up work on a Winged demon prince. You can never have to many of those laying around. The Gothimos gaming group that i play with always model and paint everything to a high degree. Seeing my work next to theirs always makes me feel a little ashamed. Their armies are Beautiful where mine is so bland and dirth by comparison. The props that i get from all of you really help motivate me to finish this army up.

Thanks Tipios, distressing the model really is the best part of the job.
@ mxwllmdr - i cant promise a tutorial right away but one is in the works. If i can remember to do so i will PM you when i get it posted so that you will know that it is up. SOmetimes these things take me more time than they should.

SO.... I fought again against the forces of khorn. My Vinidicator was base coated and had enough colors on it that i figured that i could actually field it against my foes on the field of battle. Pictured are the forces of Punisher Lord of Mortals Killion Vauk of the World Eater whome i am facing in a deathworld contest. Deathgaurd vrs worldeaters in a winner take all battle for a manufactorum. Also pictured are the forces of Prince Dionysius of the Pyre, whom my deathgaurd currently serve. His slannessh army as well as the worldeaters are both meticulous products of their fervor and zeal to produce the highest quality miniatures in the northstate. Lastly, pictured are my army and some shots of the vinidcator with a little paint on it.

So... i have been a little out of touch with this thread. I am living in Yosemite doing some work for NPS and i dont have access to a computer that will allow me to upload my pics. This has not stopped me from doing some work to continue my collection. Recently i made a few purchases on Ebay that are going to require a bit of work and i just though that i would share these. My new defiler came missing the front legs but for less than half the price of a new one i am not complaining. It is also lacking the plates from the legs so i have been buffing out the legs with GS so that they look a bit more robust, as well as resculpting them a bit. The Landraider which was also less than half the price of a new one needs to be stripped, resculpted and repainted. That is going to take some work. It arrived without the seller telling me that it was missing its side doors or that the sponsons were mounted in the forward position. I am not so sure what i am going to do with it. I will likely hold out till the new dex comes out before i make a complete decision.

I also started to buy a few chaos demons since i can now take these as battle brothers to my CSM force. So far, sticking with my Nurgle theme i have these Chaos Demon Models...
1 Greater Unclean one
5 Nurgling bases
10 Plaguebearers
And these Chaos Space Marine models
Typhus
2 Nurgle Sorcerer
2 Winged Demon Prince of Nurgle
10 Terminators with Mark of Nurgle
2 Chaos Dreads
7x7 Plague Marine Squads
2 Vindicators
2 Landraiders
2 Defilers
1 Las/HB Predator
1 Greater Demon
Banehammer

I would also love to add a fast attack slot or two, maybe the new Dragon Flyer that chaos is supposed to receive. I also wouldnt mind adding a Epididimus model for my Chaos Demons and about 5 of the old school plague bearers since i am not a real fan of the new ones.

I still have lots to do with the collection and am really looking forward to some of the rumor that surround the new chaos dex. Next update will come in about a month. I have been flailing on taking pics of my current work so i can show a work in progress of the conversions that i am doing on the defiler but i promise to step it up tonight and at least get some pics so that i will have something to show besides the finished model, until then you will just have to wait in suspence.

I was super worried when the new plague bearer models came out that i would not be able to fill out my plague bearer squads with the older metal models. I really prefer them to the new plastic ones. SO ... after some terrifying bidding on ebay i just found these for 25$ with free shipping. BOO-Yah.
Stoked. Now i can field a full squad with epidimus and a demon prince or a sould grinder. So happy.

In other news the new rules have worked to my betterment when viewed in light of the changes to power weapons. Many models in my army are converted to be weilding scythes which are now as far as i am concerned power ax. NICE. cheap (free) Ap 2 and str 5 attackers. Couldnt have worked out better if i had planned it.

Nice score on those Plaguebearers. Yours cost slightly less than mine by volume, so you got a deal.

I'm also waiting for the new Codex. No doubt it's going to have some same ol' bland blah vanilla without sprinkles or a dip as options, which will really get me going because that was one of my #1 complaints about 5th. Chaos Marines are more limited in weapon choices / upgrades / overall equipment than Ultramarines. I couldn't put Heavy Plasma on my Land Raider sponsons, or use an Autocannon for hull-mounted turret gun, or anything of that sort. It was annoying, contrary to fluff, and completely lame.

I'm really enjoying 6th Ed so far. Looking forward to it staying that way.

I agree, Skalk. Those plague bearers were so cheap and buy it now to boot. I swooped like a raptor into a nunnery of the sacred hospitaliers.

Really have high hopes for the future of my nurgle army. If i am still able to mark me some havoks i have evil plans for a tourni army with some marked havok squads and epididimus. Once the tally hits 20, Havoks with no saves allowed HB would be golden. Not to mention plague marines with a 3+ Feel no Pain. Course i would never use this in freindly play but in a tourni, especially the ones locally where the meta is "broke as can be" it would be nothing but good stuff.

Got a lot of projects i have been working on. I will be home from Yosemite in two weeks, so i will be able to get some pics posted of what little i got done, and lookin forward to getting in some 6th ed games as well. Three months in the woods has been taking a toll on me.

That made me crack up out loud at work. Muuahhahaaa!

I've never been a fan of "do it because I can" lists. I've played them before, but it felt like I needed a shower after the game. I'd much rather stick to the fluff and lose the game than be one of those guys.

And on that same note, nothing is more satisfying than watching my fluffy Plague Marines stomp on a min / max army. It's happened one in 6th Ed already, and I'm looking forward
to it happening again.

One fluffy thing I'll be bringing back to my Plague Marines is Plasma Rifles (notice I called then 'rifles' instead of 'guns'). I stopped using them in 5th Ed because of the whole Rapid Fire 'can't move and shoot' thing. I know they Get Hot. It's a chance I'm willing to take now that they actually have a chance to shoot it more than once a game.

Hope the rest of your stay in the woods goes well. Looking forward to seeing your new work when it's available.

I agree with you Skalk.
Normally i dont field TFG lists but when everyone at the shop does for a tourni and you face Dark lance Venom Spam, Greyknights Purifier or Henchmen spam, leafblower spam at every game, something MUST be done. Therefore, i will stoop to their level, only i will do it with Nurgle fluff with added demon cheese.

So while i was in yosemite i started on the long list of projects that would lead me to finishing my Deathgaurd army.
The defiler that i recieved was missing some bits. Namely the front legs, and the weapons on the turret. No matter though. I am sculpting a new torso for it so that it can double as a soul-grinder and re-sculpting the legs so that it appears a bit more biomechanical. The demon spirit has lived in this shell for ohhhh so long. This is the second defiler i have in my army and both are close to the point where i feel like i could begin painting on them. I am magnetizing both so i can swap the torso out for a sculpted soul-grinder torso, that way they can be integral to my demon army as well .
Basically all that is left on this one is to resculpt the front legs from piano wire and GS. I also need to hit it with the dremmel and add corrosion with a mix of glue, sand and paint. More to follow.
I was going to work on getting a few more plague marines modified and sculpted but with new rules on the horizon i had best wait and just finish my vehicles.
So begins a new chapter in the history of my deathgaurd army. Thanks for all the support i have recieved to date.

Thanks gang. As always support for my endeavors is appreciated.
Today i spent some time working with my defiler. No pics right now but i did discover that one of the two defilers that i have is ready for some paint. The other one that i have posted here most recently i have to magnetize so that i can swap the metal top for the fleshy bits so that it can double as a soul-grinder. Lots of work to do there.

On a side note. I have often looked at my army and been disappointed. I have a touch of OCD and this coupled with my army ADD leads me to think stupid things like wishing that my army was a little brighter or more colorful. But absence makes the heart grow fonder. Two nights ago when i pulled my whole army out and looked at it i found myself really enjoying the edperience and feeling quite happy with what i have achieved so far. Like i said. The support that i get from you all is fantastic but moments like that where i can appreciate it myself are great too. I will try to get some pics up here of the work i am doing, as well as a tutorial of some of the nurgle GS work i do on my tanks and troops, that way loyal supporters like yourselves will benefit from what i have learned if you like.

Thanks again. Sennacherib.

In an effort to be true to my word, here are some pics of my latest work. I have been working on the most heavily mutated of my defilers. Just trying to get it put finished off. I magnetized the turret so i can swap it out with the torso i posted earlier to make it a soul-grinder. When i recieved it i only paid about 20$ for it so the fact that it was missing tons of bits was not an issue. It will mean that whatever conversions i do to it to make new weapons and CCW for it will be unique. I also finished all of the tentacles from whatever demon is trapped inside of it. That thing is fighting mad and its gettin out.

I also took some pics of the process of making nurgle blemish that i do and they are attached so that if anyone so desires they can do their own nurgly bits like mine.

The process requires making a whole bunch of little balls of GS first. Allow these to harden and then cut in half with a sharp boxcutter.
Smear a very small amount of GS on the area you choose to blemish, making sure that the surface is nearly entirely smooth and spending the most time blending the edges so that there is no lip or edge visable. This really detracts from the final product when its obviouse that you have a blob of GS on the model.
Use the butt end of a paint brush or some other suitable tool to dimple the surface of the GS extensively. Vary the size and deapth of the dimples.
Press some of the 1/2 spheres of GS into the blemish area to mimick boils that have yet to rupture.
Further distress the area with a sharp point to add detail to the bottom of the larger, deeper dimples. I also use a ball point pen tip to make very small dimples here and there.

Remember to use wet tools, do NOT lick your tools since the toxin from GS bioaccumulates. Dip them in a paint cup or some such. Keep your tools clean.

@ cormadepanda I hope i dont dissapoint you cormadepanda. Painting for me is something done in bursts of frenetic activity. Usually a week before some grand event. Still i may just be able to pull something off.

@ BladeWalker ~ thanks for the props. I'm really enjoying this particular project though it was a headache to start. The fore limbs are going to be a handful. Maybe i will start those tonight during a break from work on the Heavyflamers.

Began work today on the Heavy Flamers that i am building for the left shoulder? . Pics wont get posted today, but i am in the process of making GS spouts mounted to a HB frame. There are going to be some pipes twisted around the whole conglomeration leading to a large corroded barrel. Then the whole thing is going to recieve a semi organic mount attatching it to the frame of the vehicle. This whole mess is in part an act of necessity since the defiler came without side mounted weapons or forelimbs. when in need. Make do.

The Reaper auto cannon i also have to build. That is likely going to be built up from a spare CCW, and some muzzle bitz from the chaos vehicle sprue. Likely i will magnetize it as well so that i can swap it out for another weapons should the chaos codex come with a better option. Either that, or i will make it of indeterminate designe so that i can just call it a counts as without probs from my gaming buddies.

For what my advice is worth, mount the HF as far forward on the model as possible. That template goes only so far and you're robbing yourself of an inch or two at least.

I agree entirely Skalk. After playing around with the flamers that i am working on it came down to the easiest and most secure mounting method. They are no where near finished but i have secured them to their mount along with the pus barrel that feeds them. Still need to attach the hoses that run between the guns and the barrel but that wont take long.

Started work on the fore limbs for this beast. Bio-mechanicals are not my favorite thing in the world to sculpt. I am going to try something i have never given a shot. I am going to use tow different techniques in order to build them up. If they both look good i will use them together. Otherwise i will redo one of them to match the other. Either way progress is being made.

@ cormadepanda ~ Thanks. I am shooting for a look similar to the biomechanical mess that often sprouts out of villans in comic books and movies like Akira.

Last night magnusthered and myself had a fun game of 6th. I lost but it was a ton of fun. Highlight of the game was my 7 nurgle termis taking on his entire side of the board and loosing a man. Then later in the game, a DP and Typhus had a nasty frag down and Typhus successfully healed two str 10 hits with FNP. moral of the story. Typhus is tough as nails. Dont mess with the Deathgaurd.

Below are pics from the game as well as some shots of a building that i have been using in my games, as well as pics of some of my recent work. The Land raider is going to be a handful. It came minus doors, though luckily i had a spare set laying around. I am working to make everything in my army a bit different from one another. This shouldnt be to hard with the land raider since the guy who assembled it mounted the las cannons in the forward position. The tentacles i am making for my defiler/soul grinder are coming along. So far only 1 is still in the works but tonight ... provided that everything pans out like i hope, i plan on getting some more stuff done. Since i am currently working on no less than 4 vehicles, i have the advantage of being able to work for a half hour or so on each one. Normally things progress slowly because GS takes so long to cure, but with so many projects in the works at one time, i can spread my work around and get lots done.

Tonight i plan on cleaning up my second vindicator and sculpting some pustules onto it, as well as sculpting a raised relief of a giant nurgle fly on the door pannel. The land raider will also get some pustules sculpted onto it.
Also in the works are three or so camo nets made out of surgical gauze and pva glue. These will go on the land raider and vindicator.
The other half of the bio mechanical tentacles is going to begin getting sculpted tonight. I plan to have it wrapped around the chest of a dead blood angel, and then my second defiler is going to need a bunch of work done. I am just not happy with it in light of the way that the other one is turning out.

That was a great game! If it had gone to turn 6 the Death Guard would have won. Deny the witch saved my ass on the last turn. His Daemon prince attempted to cast winds of chaos on my guard unit holding the objective but I was able to roll a six. There were 4 or 5 guard left!

Thanks again the for the game. The terrain was excellent!

@ magnusthered. That really was a fun game. I have come to the decision that i really dont mind loosing as long as i get to do stuff. Getting a mudhole stomped in you while you do nothing is never fun.

Got some work done as i promised. The Camo nets turned out pretty well. Two are going onto my vindicator as well as some ammo crates and a jerry can. Mosely i just want it to look like the Vinid has been around the block a few times and that its been locked in a protracted campain. Worked on the fly on the door panel some. Not really happy with it. but i'm gonna wait and see how i feel about it before stripping it off.

The second tentacle for the defiler is in the works and the first tentacle is almost done. Need some feedback here. What color should i paint my nurgle tentacles. Pink, green, yellowish. I'm leaning yellowish or pink but i dont want too much color in my army or it will start to look a bit crazy.

@ Cormadepanda~ Thanks for the feedback. I will take your vote under consideration, but I am trying to stick to a somewhat limited palate. So maybe a vote for dwarf flesh?

Got some work done yesterday. I will try to post it soon. Mostly just trying to get enough done on the tentacles that it does not just look like more of the same, unchanged. Started work on a GS and bitz nurgling. I plan on making a few for the base of my Greater unclean one. That figure got a couple of shinny new pins to hold it together and a ton of GS to cover the gaps. Also been working on the Vindicator some. It takes a long time to make a noticeable difference. Next time i am on here, i swear, lots of new pics to update the progress.

sware what you like, but i know models can fall to the back burner and thats ok. You can always visit my threads in your spare time should you lose inspiration. I am excited to see what you do, but if you can i would like a noticable swollen or different looking tentical. It would add that pop, not even the whole tentical, just a tip.

@ cormadepanda ~ I have more than just a tentacle tip. The whole deal.

SO this weekend i was pretty productive. For me that means that i can actually take pics of some of what i have been working on. Work progressed on many fronts. I drilled, scraped and otherwise distressed a bunch of stuff that needed work. namely the Vindicator and the Landraider that i have been at work on. The land raider i am still not inspired by. I need to hold most models in my hands for a while to get a sense of what i want to do with them and the LR as well as the sencond defiler are both models that are proving to be a challenge. I did however finish assembly of my two demon prince models that had been on a back burner one of which (carrion) has a hand sculpted nurgling on its base., I also finished the rolled tarps that are to go on my LR and my vinicator. Currently i am trying to work out where to mount a few banners. My deathguard army has banners throughout and i want to continue the trend. I am almost at the point where i can begin painting (? really) my demon prince Carrion and Bile, as well as the defiler (do they have names, not so sure they do).

anyways. Enjoy and any Q&C are encouraged.

Not sure eldartau 1987. Likely it was a pain in the butt though. Thanks fo the props.

I cant wait to get to assembly and painting on the final stage of my defiler. Cant wait. Its been so long in the wrks that its really hard to believe that its almost time for primer. Almost.

Still on my list of things to finish are about 60 troops, but since i already have 21 deathgaurd plaguemarines painted, i'm gonna focus on basing and painting 7 bases of nurglings and about 10 more plague bearers. Stay tuned.

Thanks Byte.

Last night i did a bunch of work on my Vindicator. I estimate one to two days before i can post some pics of it primed and ready for painting. The same goes for my demon princes Bile and Carrion, as well as my defiler. With that much to paint i wont be getting anything done for a long time but at least i will have a lot of little stuff that i can work on. Next time i post, pics of at least one of those four previously mentioned projects primed and with painting under way. stay tuned.

@ cormadepanda. I am seriously taking into account your suggestion of pustules on the tentacles on my defiler. Tonight i reckon i will get into that.

So, despite the lack of updates i have actually been at work at stuff. I had to spend a bunch of time looking at the new dex of course. Seems better than the last one but i am not so hot to trot on the new Zoid vehicles and the Hellturkey. Just not stoked on the models, though the rules seem ok. But thats not the point of this thread.

So among other things the second of the two vindicators that i was working on is nearing completion. The camo nets i made are the last thing that i need to apply paint too. They look pretty fair by my opinion. I am still debating if i should paint the barrel of the vinicators, and all ordanance aged brass. Thinking it might just be the ticket.

The Defiler is finally getting some paint. It is taking forever to paint though. i am going to regret this but all the little arrows and stuff on the lower hull are going to be done in aged brass with lots of corrosion. Overall i was not happy with the defiiler, but it is really coming around now with the added colors and paint. Now just to finish the second one.

Did some detail work for the base of my greater demon. the nurgling is GS and a head from my bits box. It was my first effort at producing a nurgling and i feel pretty good about the result. Next step, make a herald of nurgle for my demons army.
The boiling slime around the demons base will be fun to paint. Not sure if i will do just dark green, or a more acid looking color. I guess it will depend on the way that dark green looks. Otherwise i will upgrade to acid green and the darker shade will be my base coat.

Finally I sculpted a new chest piece for a plague marine wearing a dress. Not sure how i like the look of these legs but just one marine in the army with a dress should be fine.

Q and C are welcome as always.

Got a little work done on my defiler. I finished up with the basecoats for the bottom half and then did some dry brushing and washing. The overall feel of the unit is positive. I like how its turning out even though it still smells a little like rotten meat. Has anyone else noted that the citadel washes smell a bit rotten sometimes or is it just me. I included a shot of the base of one of the big tentacles so yall can see how the flesh is coming along. Its about half way done. Cant wait to play with this beast. After i finish my GRE Exam all of my neighbors that play 40k are invited to play in what i will be calling the Neighborhood of Chaos game. THat should be happening around the 17th and i will try to get some pics of the day to post up here.
Otherwish. C and Q are welcome.

When this one is done i STILL have to finish work on the other defiler that i have sitting around in my too be finished section of my war room at home. It needs crazy work done on the upper "torso"? part. I also need to finish magnetizing and come up with some effective way to make it stand out amongst the others. My goal is for each to be unique, they are afterall very personalized vehicles. I also have those two greater demons and a landraider to finish. But its best if i only work on one at a time or i get scattered and never get anything done.

@sennacherib ~ Yeah, I dug out all my old 'Nid stuff. I found about 40 termagants and about 30 or so hormagaunts. 9 warriors, 3 metal ravenors, a zoanthrope (converted from the head of a 2nd edition Zthrope and the body from a 3rd ed Zthrope), an Aliens queen style Tyrant, about 20 or so spore mines, and a dozen or so old school stealers. Still have tons of the rippers for swarms as well. Thinking about making it a playable force....I'm looking at probably getting a Tervigon and a Flyrant kit to start off with, then maybe some hive guard. I have 2 sets of the 3rd ed. Space Hulk stealers too if I need them. I've also got some ideas for some tyranid themed terrain that I may start up a thread on here for. Finally, this might be a good time to break out the Forge World Capillary Towers and Spore Chimney and get some paint on them.

Other than that, I've been working on a Dark Eldar army...have 2000+ points assembled and primed - ready for paint.

I'm loving your Death Guard stuff, as I've been reading the Horus Heresy novels recently and am considering a Pre-Heresy/Heresy Legion force my self....you know, never can keep that gamer ADD under control.

@ Eldar tau ~ Cant wait to see your DE. They intrigue me as a new army that i might be motivated to try. Love to play fast and furious armies. My Ultras army is packed with about a dozen Fast attack choices. Light and fast has always appealed.

@ Lone Lictor ~ Thanks. With the new chaos dex a lot of new armies have cropped up with a chaos flair. Makes for good inspiration i tell ya;.

@ Fango~ Cant wait to see what you have dude. I sold all my nids to a dude in oz. He bought them for 500$ and then paid a whopping 150$ for shipping. He was super happy though. i cant wait to see pics of them at a tourni or some such. Glad you are on here. Its a great way to keep you abreast of all the work i have been doing on this stuff. I am selling off all my armies and getting down to where i only have my Death gaurd. It makes it way easier to stay focused and get stuff done. The ADD gamer can be a problem, thats why i have been focusing so hard on this.

So... Tomorrow or maybe later today i will post some new work. I have been re-working the new plague marine pictured above, pointing. He felt off. The waiste was too tight, and i just didnt feel inspired by him so i tore off the arms and went about re modelling him. Both shoulders are now magnetized and he is currently packing a plasma pistol and a power sword. I also took some plasticard and built up the edges of his shoulder pads so he is a bit bulkier. I'm really happy with the results.

Its funny, powerswords are now actually pretty good for chaos. They were better when they were ap 2 like a fist, but the fact that we MUST accept a challenge make them worth while when you include them. If your foe has a power fist you get to strike first and then hopefully you get to add a notch to your blade. Plasma pistol isnt a bad upgrade either since you can pick your foes special weapons out of the unit pre charge.

@ eldartau ~ I have used a similar technique on rock buttes that i have been making to use for terrain. Nice thing about woodchips, most playgrounds have those and sand for free.

Just a quick update.
I started work on a lord with the black mace. Though he may eventually be just joe plague marine, i needed a model with a mace so i can start feilding the black mace for croud (Ork) control. I am going to give him a banner and put the little tiny shields (not sure what they are called) on his hips to cover the spot where his leg joints and his waiste joints are.

Also attached is a pic of the revamped plague marine that i just finished remodelling. I feel good about the new shoulder pads and the sword plasma pistol combo.

Around here there are lots of marine armies (obviously) and then a few people who play guard, and then a scattering of the other races.
For a while orks were everywhere though. I recenty sold off my nids and my orks and am in the process of selling off my loyalists. they take up too much space and i just dont have as much time to invest in them now that chaos has taken hold.

Just thought i would post a few pics of my gaming board at home. I made it modular so its in three pieces that set on top of a folding table. I have been constructing a whole mess of WW 1 themed trench warfare terrain as well as a ruined city scape modelled after Stalingrad WW2. I made a bunch of craters, half of which have water in them. i also constructed a few complex trench lines, a block house and some movable, mounted up barbed wire entanglements.

So far i am pretty happy with the overall effect. I am going to be painting a small mural to go on my wall to act as a backdrop so that i will have smoke and flames on the horrizon when i photograph my minis for battle reports.

So, I have been working on a new project. I will be fielding a unit of 10 Plague zombies in a 1500 pt list that i am fielding this sat. I have to get the zombies all decked out. I am using bits of cadian and the zombie lines to assist in construction. I want the whole unit to represent just the dead that had arisen since the invasion of ARDUOUS began. Arduous is a world that i wrote a time line for and have been constructing as a campaign setting.
The zombies will be part of this 1500pt list.

Typhus
Warsmith with mark of nurgle
10 zombies
2x5 plague marines with power fist and melta in each squad.
Rhino
2xDefiler
2xHellbrute, one with ML
3 Terminators with Mark of Nurgle, Power fist and two combimeltas.

@ cormadepanda ~ Thanks dude. The board is such and an integral part of the game that having a good board is essential. That one zombie, like i said, he's not my favorite but I am glad that you appreciate his ambiance.

@ Galorn ~ I went to Home Depot and got it there. Its (I think) Chocolate Truffle color. I know for sure it had truffle in the name. I just mixed it with sand and then painted it on the board. THen i overbrushed the board with two or three colors. Burnt sienna, a leftover and drying up pot of one of the desert brown colors that GW used to make, and there are traces of burnt umber.

I use the paint mixed with sand to do bases and to make terrain. its great for use to texture the sides of concrete walls.

I wont be coming down south for a bit. Dealing with the out of school, finding a job blues.
Good to hear that you are still staying involved. Your necromunda terrain looks like its coming along. I found that i am gettin more done when i have less distractions. I was working on a whole ton of stuff but now that i have all but given up being a loyalist, i am finding that since all my energies are focussed on the whole chaos thing, I get stuff done. Been thinking about you and yours lately. Hope your christmas season is awesome. Talk to you sometime soon.

So for my next sculpting project i am going to work on a unit or two comprising of 3 Hooktors. Nurgle slaughter demons. I am going to run them as spawn with the mark of nurgle. Whats not to like about cheap T6 beasts.

Also thinking i might need to model up a unit of Havoks,
We shall see.

Wow. That is a stunning board! I like the lighter color of earth that has been blown apart time after time. I also didn't miss the 'Nurgle' crater. Well done, sir! As always, excellent work all around (even the Plague Zombie you don't like... it's my favorite as well).

Thanks Skalk.
Its funny to me that the one that i dont like everyone else loves. Literally everyone loves that one. Oh well. while i look on it with a mix of disgust (and not fatherly love disgust) everyone else will be loving on the little bugger.

Hows life Skalk. I know right now you are likely dreaming of a day when you can get out and ride your bike. its probably gettin down to the near Zeros where you are. And BTW, your the first to ever notice and mention the nurgle crater. Bonus nurgle points to you sir.

I actually thought about taking it out the other day since it hit a balmy 40 degrees but there's so much salt on the road I took the responsible route and modeled instead.

As far as hating the model everyone else loves, been there and never understood it. Try as I might, I can't see what everyone else sees and have no idea why the one that I thought was awesome didn't get any love at all.

I have been working on tons of new stuff. Pictures will follow but, just to tease yall, I will say that there are some corrupted Ultramarines vehicles I have been working on. Deathgaurd has had em for years so the paints wearing off. Also a quratet of oblits with the mark of nurgle, a bike squad with mark of nurgle, and some other misc bitz. ITs been a busy new year.

@ Cormadepanda ~ you dont know the half of it amigo. I have been gettin into a whole mess o converting.
@Markillius08 ~ Thanks man. Those DG terminators were a fun step towards my current project. DG Obliterators.

So i have been dealing with my conversion ADD. So much to do and so many distractions. I have played the new dex enough now to say that i have noticed a few things about it in this edition. The cult troops are super spendy and you almost have to have some cultists to bulk the force up with. Typhus allows for the awesome, fearless plague zombie of doom. NICE. So i am still working on a unit of ten of those. I also found that hammer and anvil is a really tough mission for units without good transport. I.e. Chaos. We dont get those fancy fliers that everyone else gets like storm ravens etc. So its almost mandatory that we have all of our troops in rhinos, bear minimum. Thus the conversion began of a loyalist predator into a rhino. I am trying not to spend money on GW stuff since it is getting super spendy and since re-sale on a pred is not even enough to buy a new rhino kit, I converted up this ultramarines one. Also in the works are a bunch of nurgle bikes. They are cheap, tough and a great way to get to the other side of the board and cause some pain. Twin meltas anyone? I am also going to use them as a guard unit to sneak a lord with a black mace down field. Everyone has been putting it on a demon prince, which is all fine and dandy but its really expensive. And lets be real. All you have to do is cause 1 casualty for it to be effective. I think its a must have in elite lists so that you can deal with hordes more effectively. Finally, there are the oblits that I am making out of Black Reach terminators. Oblits are even better than before in this edition. The fact that they dont have to deal with the hull point issue and with the mark of nurgle they are pretty hard to insta-grib. Plus they make a great unit to attach to typhus and deepstrike in with (in theory).

i also am beginning a huge conversion project for my buddy Magnusthered. He has commissioned me to do a fortress of redemtion and then convert it into a fortress of corruption or some such. He plays Tzneetch ( I know you think you play undevided but all your guys are blue and have 1000 sons colors so.....) so I am going to convert over a loyalist fortress for him. its the first commission work i have ever done. And its a big project but i got some ideas.

All told i have to finish converting.
Fortress of redemtion.
10 plague zombies
6 nurgle bikes and a bike lord
4 oblits
DG rhino
Defiler

I also have to assemble
another defiler
Plague Hulk.

As always questions and comments are appreciated. stay tuned for pics of a finished oblit.

@Moltar ~ Oblit number one is here.

SO i feel like my first oblit turned out more or less the way that I wanted him too. The Ogre gut plate fit perfectly on his chest after I had extended the torso. It was a bit of work ot both widen his chest and make him taller, but along with the extended shoulder pads and the lifts I put on his feet, he is significantly larger than a regular terminator. In fact, he might be a tad taller than a stock Oblit and just as wide. The only thing is hes not quite as girthy as the original oblits but I can live with that. The texas chainsaw massacre mask was touch and go but i am really happy with the way it looks. Cant wait to field him along with his bretheren.

Grunt. Apparently my photos got all mixed up. Sorry they are all upside down and topsy tervy. The effect of chaos even bleeds over into the real world, only this looks like the handiwork of Tzneech.

Yeah... I fail at uploading pics for my blog.
Started my newest big project for Magnusthered. He wants something where the conversion of a fortress of redemtion is not just some stuff tacked on and call it good. a complete overhaul is i believe what he wants. so heres the plan.

He and I had talked about just rebuilding the tower out of plasticard with lots of rivets, spikes and plates or maybe rescultping the angels on the sides into daemons. I am going to use a bit of both ideas. He still has plenty of time to ixnae this idea if he dosnt like it, but i already started to prune down the sides of the tower. I am going to build up a coffin like recess around the angels. The sides will have plates rivetted on with spikes coming through them at intervals, with loyalist corpses hanging here and there for good measure. I intend to use the balls from inside the britta filter to make lots of rivets (cause details like that make any conversion pop. There is also a big tube of marine epoxy putty that i plan to use to make the whole construct a bit more solid with. Magnusthered has a way about him that might result in a rough thrashing when he loads his car to go have a game. I also plan to resculpt the angels so that they have one of 4 demon faces. Bird, Dog, corpse and female. Probably this will be the hardest part.

Magnus~ if you want only one type of demon face sculpted better let me know.

I am then going to have ample chains dangling and chaos icons here and there along with banners of corruption to suitably chaosify the remains. In the pic below, the black spots are spikes faceing the viewer, the red scurving lines are chains, and the plank stickin off the top is to send loyalists to their doom from.

Questions and comments are welcome.

This-

...is the smartest most inspired creative and overall awesome idea I have seen since I started my Death Guard and wish so much that I had seen it 2 years ago.

I am 100% absolutely undoubtedly guaranteed going back to my Terminators and trying that. I've wanted gas maks for years. They were just a tiny bit of GS away.

If I could make the icon larger or come w/ audio, it would be a full-page and the *SMACK* would be heard all the way over at your neighbor's house.

Regardless, I saw it on your thread and it's very well done. You have excellent GS skills and .... and hmm... I just had an idea that would make it even MORE difficult! If yours isn't done yet, consider using a small hole punch for glass lenses. I am totally going to try that.

@ Skalk. Here is a link to that guys stuff that i sort of emulated for the mask that I have on my Oblit. He does really good work. Addressing your feelings about making a glass inlay for the mask. If you shop around or look in your stationary drawer there should be a automatic pencil available to you with a metal barrel that the lead slides out of. Obviously a larger diameter lead will have a larger barrel. This is a great tool for making a perfectly round indentation on the surface of the mask to represent a lens. I have used this same technique with a lot of my minis. The more metal tools you have to do GS with the better since some patterns are easier to replicate if all you have to do is press a set sized implement against the epoxy. I know what you mean about the projects stacking up. I am writting a bullfrog erradication protocol for a former employer of mine. Its been almost done for 3 months. I also have the list of stuff that i have posted, other stuff i didnt post and a host of ebay that needs doing. Grunt.

@Know No Pear ~ Hey man. Tell you what. You are the second person to ask for a detailed explanation of how i have done some of my GS work recently so i will do the best that I can to detail the next mini that i post. You will need a dremmel tool to make the larger shoulder pads, lots of GS and a small supply of plasticard. I am using some pretty basic techniques to bulk the legs up and the torso. Glad you liked the work. The next one is going to be an amalgamation of two different GS requests, that way i can kill two grox with one bolter. Thanks for stopping by. I will try...no promises... to have some pics up this coming monday.

BTW. I feel the personal need to celebrate my 1500th post here on dakka with a fat BOOSH!

@ Skalk. This image of my demon prince shows admirably the effect that the tip of a Automatic pencil has. Find the right diameter and gas mask should be no issue. Also. Should finding the right diameter be difficult, try looking for any tube that will work. The sheath on a plastic coated paperclip or insulation from a wire. If you can slide it down, these would both offer a means to create the efffect that you desire. Hope this helps.

@ Know No Pear ~ I figure a short verbal explanation to presage my later tutorial is in order.
The torso are widened front to back by inserting a plasticard slip between the front and the back peice of the torso. This slip i glue in place to hold the two torso halves about 2mm farther apart. GS fills the crack that was formed in this process. This is partially visable in some of my pics on the preceeding page.
The Waiste of the torso will now sit slightly up off of the waist of the legs by a similar distance provided the slip that you inserted into the torso hangs down slightly. I stuffed a wad of GS into newly widened Torso/waiste and the glued it on top of the legs. Simply GS around the outside to create a new (2mm) armor plate that extends the torso up off the legs.
With the shoulder pads i used a technique looted from Sons Of Orar here on dakka. His stuff is simply amazing.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/274891.page
The plasticard I used here is the thickest I have really used. Probably 2mm. This builds up the shoulder pads considerably. Then under the shoulder pads i glue regulare space marine pauldrons. These I glue so that the bottom of the pauldron, which the marine arm would be protruding from normally, is glued to the cresent on the side of the terminator torso which the arm ordinarily attaches too. This creates an even broader shoulderspan for the oblit.
Legs are simply bulked up by GS'ing in the gaps in the thighs and building up the calfs of the model. I also built up the feet so that the model stands about 1.5mm taller than he would without these added on lifts. Thats about all i did. Stay tuned for pics.

Aha! Thanks for the explanation! I've been playing around with grey stuff(not green stuff), and since I've got no access to plasticard[not even sure where to find it in my local art shops], I've just been using the grey stuff as a substitute for everything. I've been trying to bulk up a terminator into a terminator lord with a multitude of tutorials, including yours. Thanks a lot!

Similar texture to a credit card. Singapore should have access to plasticard. Hows the gaming over there. do you have a part in a local games group. If so ask them. they might know a retailer that carries that kind of stuff. either that or order a sampler of it from a retailer. also, you can just use sprue and shave it down to get the right thickness to act as a spacer for the chest plate. an average sprue is about twice as thick as the bits that i use for the chest expansion bit. YOU will need some for the pauldrons though.

I do visit a FLGS once in a while, to watch people play and to learn, as well as to talk to people. I have a couple of friends that play, but I haven't played any games myself(except a tutorial game). I'm currently working on a small army, together with a couple of friends each beginning with me.

And yeah, I expanded the torso using some sprue as a stand-in instead, and then filled the gaps with grey-stuff. It worked brilliantly!

Haven't got around to searching yet. I'll check out the art store(s) soon, hopefully I find it.

Significant different between Green and Gray is that Gray cures faster and is much harder when fully dried. If you are using Gray you want to make 100% sure that you are ready to go because the time frame for making corrections / changing your mind is noticeably shorter. It is great stuff for doing 'filler' jobs like arms into shoulder pads, repairing cracks in vehicle hulls, etc. Not so much (IMO) for sculpting.

Hmmm. Thanks for the heads up Skalk, Know No Pear.

I have long wondered about the usage of said products. I have seen the brown stuff as well. What interests me most really is the shorter curing time and the fact that it will withstand up to 4 vulcanizations. Interesting. It would be useful for stuff like pressmolds and work on stuff like composite figures where i used both sculpy and this grey stuff in concert with each other. Some of my bigger models i make using a composite of GS and Sculpy. Lots of peeps grumble that sculpy is not good to sculpt with, but i find it perfect for constructing the armatures and the basics of larger figures such as the two greater demons that I have in my army.

Today i am going to get fully wound up on coffee and really tackle that fortress of redemption conversion that I have been struggling with. I need a better cutting tool so i am gonna buy some new bitz for my dremmel tool and get busy. Keep you all posted.

Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2013/01/18 21:19:43

So I spent four hours yesterday with earplugs in, Safety gogglesat times i had a wrap around my face, and my dremmel tool firing. At times there was hot, semi molten bitz of plastic spraying me in the face and when all was said and done it was everywhere. Bits were even stuck to the wall. Needless to say i can only imagine what my neighbor thinks i was doing, thought they probably hate me right now.
I finished the inlays for the faces of all four sides of the tower. Parts of it were touch and go because the tower is not a regular shape. Today, when i have time i am going to use some plummers putty to adhere the inlays to the face of the tower. This should both provide stability and support to the overall structure. Essential since i am going to be drilling through the tower in places to add spikes, chains and other do-dads.
The hardest part will likely be GSing the demon faces into the hoods of the idols on the sides. I expect that will take me about another 8 or 10 hours.
Questions and comments appreciated.

@ eldartau1987. Yeah dude, thats a great idea. I was actually thinking of doing four different faces, one for each chaos god. It is likely that this is the hardest of the efforts that i had in mind to try and pull off, and it remains to be seen if i decide to dive into this endevor. Either way i am feeling this to be the hardest of the conversion bits that I am going to engage with.Stay tuned.

@ Cormadepanda. Thanks. I have been a busy bee. About to launch into more work on the fortress after I get done with a few hours of work on a application i have to be a teacher at the high school level. I am in the second round of interviews and its going good.!!! Thanks for stopping by again.

@ Magnusthered~ Hey man. Glad to see you here since THIS is your fortress. I too am happy with the way that things are progressing. I am going to take the plunge and cement the inlays into the tower. Next step after that is going to be adding the plates and rivetting the outside. Probably another four hours of work. Still tossing the idea of the four patron gods around as a possible for the idols on the side of the tower. I am going to have to actually mute their faces slightly as far as detail goes so that they will look more like statues. The chains and spikes are gonna be some of the last details that i add so stay tuned.

Any comments and suggestions dakka. I would appreciate the ideas and feedback.

Four chaos gods faces would be a truly brilliant idea! sure there's a lot of work involved but with some good planning and the right additions I'm sure with skills such as yours you can do it!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And you could add some subtle references to each gods face! a bit of blood dribbling from Khorne, pus from Nurgle, perhaps a light glow or piercings for Slanesh, and for Tzeentch a blending into the surrounding building?

Sennacheribs Nurgle And Fallen Space wolves. update 3/27? @ 2013/01/21 02:08:57

I would use a vulture like visage for Tzneech
a wolf like face for khorn
a corpse for nurgle
and a woman with a long twisting tounge for slanneesh.

more thinking.... must consider.

Hello. Sorry for the long wait, but here's a (painted) version of the bulked up torso and stuff. I don't have many WIPs for the torso itself, so hopefully you can see what i've done.

Also, instead of faces why not put their symbols there? They all have really distinct symbols. And if you can, perhaps add a cultist under the symbol, each one afflicted by their gods.
For example, a bleeding, headless cultist for Khorne, a highly mutated one for Tzeentch, one gaudily painted and dressed one for Slaanesh and a bloated, diseased one for nurgle, all hanging down from chains or in cages under the symbol.

Wow. Nice. I think your enhanced torso and limbs are a bit larger than mine even. Thats crazy. THey look good Know No Pear. use a red ink or wash for that. I gotta say, where did you get that space marine with the ax. I dont recognize the battle armor model that he is wearing. Is it space wolves?

Also, I havent fully commited to the demon faces. Times running out though and i am going to have to get a serious move on to banging out some more work.

Haha, I didn't plan it when i began, so I actually had no idea how large it would've turned out. I'm glad that it is this size though; makes an imposing chaos lord.
The normal marine is wearing the normal space wolves armour, but I'm not really a fan of the wolves so I tried for an Alpha Legion scheme.
Use a red ink or wash for which? Unless you're asking how the red was done, then it was Tamiya Acrylic Clear Red. It's amazing for blood effects, and dries looking like fresh blood. Add a bit of black and it'll look like you just tore through some loyalist scum!

Well, all the best for your fortress of redemption. Best get started! Hahaha

I think it would be a great way for you to save some time. Not saying that you could not create consistancy on your own but for me personally, it could save a lot of problems and frustration. I look forward to more progress!

So ... I finally got some time away from my three jobs (yes 3. I had four but i quit one. Better to have a ausicious number like three than one like 4).
Got some work done. I am almost done with the plating of the sides. I will post some shots of that when i am done, but It takes way longer than the sculpting does. I have spent about 12 hours so far getting the sides platted and the heads each take about an hour to sculpt a rough bust.

The spikes and chains are going on last. That way i can fiddle with the plates and such to get them just right. I think that they will only take a couple hours to complete but honestly, the whole things is gonna be pretty deadly to handle.

Hope the wait was worth it as far as updates go. This whole thing should be done pretty quick now that i am at a point where it is all coming together. Questions and comments welcome.

I agree. I am going to have to do a bit o work on it. The eyes are too high. I am just going to cut em off and then re-due so that the crock head thing becomes a thing of the past.

Yep, totally a gator face. Also, stealing that termi gas mask idea that you stole. I can't wait to see what the putrified fortress will look like. I'd love to see one of the statues actually vomiting.
