Yeah, those have a spring-loaded firing mechanism, more play-value for younglings like yours.
I would bet they would last longer too, assuming your boys are like boys and play rough.
i had that thought too... but with two sons you tend to have each item at least two time to sooth the bickering down a bit... not that it prevents it very much^^
yeah but even a broken nose in later ages can be mended with a beer...whereas in the early stages of war kids have seldom a chance to make peace...really it is most frustrating...and about emanzipation and all that stuff... my younger sister and me we hit each other on a regualr basis too...not that we had against the other an edge...we were truly equal...
which is for me the best thing if done that way... strong family ties are worth a fortune...sadly this is not common any more...but we try to get that back in line with our small outfit of a family...
yeah well hen i guess it is high time i install a stearing wheel^^ which incidently i have planned to do so tomorrow... and funnyly before my wife and kids went for their holiday we were on a flea market and guess what we got... a true playmobil pirate stearing wheel... which i will mount tomorrow... so cross fingers for a nice inspiring work!
yup... lucky me... also this is the one piece i feared to make on my own...so really tough luck for once...and it is so important as the minis can interact there and an other thing would have caused promblems...
essentially yes.... there is still the railing for the bridge, but that goes along with the wheel,
then there is the minor issue that this is a sailing ship...so in essence it should sport some sails...non?
and the rigging maybe...but i could skip that for my part...
you really think so? hmmm... it would be a major pain to make the rigging ...the sials i think i coiuld manage, but for real they would interfere with play a lot...we have had recently the viking ship...which we traded for the roman galley and also we own the firemen ship...different time scales dont really bother my kids^^ pirates for sure battle policemen and firemen alike^^
but everytime they play with the sailships they turn the sails 90°....so they are not a hinderance any more...
Honestly, I don't see any homemade configuration of sails being as flexible as the toy-grade plastic like Playmobil is made of, and that stuff isn't meant to be glued, it's meant to be molded solid for playwear. IMHO it is a lot harder to work with than styrene. And styrene works for models, but not toys. ..not that I am admitting a fetish of mine is plastic or anything
the v-shaped skidds are meant to make it easier in my mind to move the ships hull over the carpet...will test it tomorrow tho...but what is done is done...ripping those off now would cause too much hurt...for the ship and me...
dstein, you are bang to right with your theory...i highly doubt if i could come up with a sail config that would allow playability as the standard sails would allow...sadly...
bit i will try to make one for the look of the thing...dunno, maybe i get it out of sheer stuborn luck done working...^^
thanks rogue^^
yup rawson... i plucked up courage enough to do so...besides i was bored stiff and had suddenly that idea again^^...and you probably meant to write the skids of progress^^
at shrike... if you have a modeling wise idea...i am all ears...er ...eyes^^
i thought more along the lines of laminate (this time for real! no PVA involved) Paper...then cut to fit...
also... picupdate of my early morning work... did some interior work...curtains...then texturized the mast...and created a flag...a very basic shape for now...
all is done with soaked tissue with PVA...it is a real blessing in my opinion...you can create so manny different surfaces with that... i think i will use my learned Know-How shortly in terrainmaking...no doubt!
thanks mate! will have to cure now but you think the general ship as seen here is almost done building and will see paint that very day...will use cheaper paint to prime it by hand...
it is an actual playmobil steeringwheel...we were lucky on a fleamarket...
Automatically Appended Next Post: also as no one seems to comment after my last one...here is yet another picupdate...aren´t we the productive ones....?savvy?
had to say that again...i am currently watching the movie pirates of the caribean...very inspiring^^
aye! and even not seen here a second coat has been aplied...i will now let that sit for the night...then i need to make some details to the wood and then the steelparts get painted...after all that (and all the other smaller details too) the whole ship gets covered in PVA again... i do that as a sealing... i guess just varnishing it would rub off in the end when dragged and pished over floor and carpets.,..
Viktor von Domm wrote:aye! and even not seen here a second coat has been aplied...i will now let that sit for the night...then i need to make some details to the wood and then the steelparts get painted...after all that (and all the other smaller details too) the whole ship gets covered in PVA again... i do that as a sealing... i guess just varnishing it would rub off in the end when dragged and pished over floor and carpets.,..
The design of the kit baffles me a bit though.
See, it is a six-gun ship, but the two the gun ports to the stern of the ship are blocked by the stairs to the bridge, and they only supply you with 2 cannons, but spaces to mount 4 cannons? WTF?
It looks liek I am going to have to order some more cannons from Bricklink to properly arm her!
dave that is a cool closeup... but yeah... i think sometimes the built is not that thought through by lego...i know probably a heretic thought... also: iirc battleships had not enought cannons on board to have all sides fully equiped... also castles and such likes had movable guns... after all how many times does a battleship have to face enemies on both sides? the needed guns would be moved to the needed side...
so gents that day is a bog update day for me... i am currently painting like the devil...like the devil is behind be chasing me..more like^^
only two nights to go and the ship has to be servicable...
so i begun today with darkening the hull yet again...the yesterday colors didn´t swing for me...
after that i blackened the plates to later then metal them up^^
then by a sudden strike of genius^^ i searched for fitting letters in our noodles section in the kitchen...yeah you read right, i used letters noodles for nameplates...that methode is highly recommended by me now...easy raised detail...no GS skills involved...and easy redone if spelled wrong lol
and on the hull already...:
then i finally began painting the aftercastel...blue for my son oskar and yellow for my son felix...their respective favorite colors... giving the ship a slight frenchy style in my opinion...
yellow needs another coat or something tho...
also the interrior of the aftercastel needed painting... i had to face a minor obstacle here... due to the shape of the windows and the lack of space for brush wielding i had to again rely on my inventivness... so i used an old battery powered toothbrush...usually used for cleaning stripped minis... and i have to say quite a good way to cover a surface with paint^^
then i painted the curtains in a fitting red mecharite to match the capuccino colored walls inside...and also i painted the meshed windows with metal too...
from the outside:
and if that wasn´t enough i also completed the metal nametags:
i guess at least one picupdate will happen today...if not more^^
That is just absolutely awsome Vik! Really looking phenomenal!
Yeah, I know you would only have enough cannons to fill one side, but it's the third port that you can't mount a cannon in that bugs me. Why make a third port if you ccan't use it? Generally, unneccessary holes in the hull of a wooden ship are considered a bad thing, lol.
Automatically Appended Next Post: See, they did it right with the big Imperial Flagship kit, wheels on the guns and rails to move them into at the ports.
I'll need to get ahold of one more black hull peice, then I can extend the ship 8 studs and add one more gun and it'll all work out
oo ship is looking great with a slap of paint, and noodles?! never would have thought of that! And stein thats one sweet lego ship, if i could buy all the stuff that i wanted i would fill a house
I have to admit Vik, you have me hooked, I just came back from a shopping trip where I scored some Playmobil soldiers (They look like redcoats, but with the blue coats, still supposed to be British sailors/marines or French?) Their flag has Fleur d' lie's or however you spell it, must be French?
My GF liked the Black Pearl so much, she got me the Queen Anne's Revenge! It almost has enough skulls to be a GW product
yup those are the french soldiers of the same period as the redcoats...i recently was researching for playmobil and saw them too...i especially like their old guns...with the bayonets...that is the old fashion style...i think they reproduced it... out of style at least for 10-15 years now... when i was a kid i had quite a few of them...very important for my redcooats back then...^^ oh and one of your soooliers had it´s hat on facing the wrong way...if his arge would see him that way he would shoove him in the tanty for getting a cold due to not having his hat on proper...
thanks zefig!
yep rawson... i am rather banking on that^^
at shaso...yup ploughing the waves is not for the faint of heart^^
at rogue...yep my house is way too full as is... to much of my hobby and my wife says even our kids have too many toys...that is a real bummer for the upcoming christmas...
mates... promised an update.,.. but i worked feverently at the ship and didn´t make any WIP pics...i know first rule for a modeler so i get this as a first offence...? tomorrow i will make daytime pics of the ship...currently i have begun with the flag and it is looking quite nice if i say so myself...^^ also i have completly covered the whole ship in PVA, a thick coat at that and it is even now completly dry...also it gained a nice slick surface so that i am quite confident for the ship to be a good carpet vessel^^
tomorrow there will be only the steering wheel to be painted and then mounted on the bridge...also the flag had to be mounted and to be given the last bits of attention to it...then i think i am done with that big case of wood/glue/tissue/cardboard...
Automatically Appended Next Post: ups... mised you there shrike... thanks mate...the noodles are really something that is worth it... it really will be the think for further scratchbuilds to be used there too...
i thought about making some benches and a table... but we have both already from playmobil...so i wanted to skip that atm... actually i had the thught too to show some minis that hare trying to capture the bigjobs ship^^
the steam divers are not forgotten... just temporarily hampered^^
And Damn You Sir!
I have now ordered 6 Playmobil Redcoats (stovepipe hats), and and officer. I have ebay bids on 4 more redcoats, 5 British Royal Guards, a snare drum, trumpet, and flag! (You can't march redcoats without a proper command group!) And I ordered some more French army builder sets. With all the extra accessories and stuff that comes with it all that I won't ever need, Tell your boys to be expecting a Christmas package from Uncle Dave in the US!
on a realted (pun intended) subject... i was trying to answer a comment on your blogh yesterday around 20:00 CET when an almost santalike bumping on my door tore me from my PC...and guess who visited me? my family... they are now all BACK!!!! they drove through the after noon to get early at home... and kept it as a secret! boy was i surprised... and i am soooooo glad that they are now all with me again...
i will shortly show you all some pics i did for the assembled troops of my kids...i proped all the existing troops together in all ships i could muster... quite a colorful force through the ages^^
and dave ... i henceforth declare you insane...but for my that is a good mindset^^
i didn´t tested it...but now that you mentioned it...i think i should try that later...hmmm....*raises eyebrow* now you have sparked a certain idea here....for the upcoming felix freedom fighter´s... see my gallery for that...i have had a creative discusion with my son...(his army...arbites...) and he will get the very first plastic built from me...a tank...of course...hmmm... now that you bring the subject of fitting tubes...hmmm... it makes me think of hydraulics....*raises eyebrow even higher...* hmmmm...indeed...
So your doing an arbite army eh? Luck Felix! with another tank , ? shazo will be pleased. Couldn't find the pics you mentioned though in your gallery though , will take another look see.
sadly i forgott what minirange they are from... the force consists now about 20 minis...a more `munda aproach to an army...i think this could be interresting for him...i am betting he will be a good RPG player...
So my out-of-school hours in school are over, but now I have exams for the next two weeks and what's with the ghost-town of a thread? Progress, progress, progress! *clapping hands together at each word*
well... as for progress... yesterday i went into the cellar and primed me some of my stuff... sadly no steamknight where primed in that effort... i am really in some sort of burnout with these... the needed GS work will not come to me... also...i won´t get away with no rivetmaking on them... but i can´t atm bear with that... so i thought...being the riveter... i could start working on my gang of riveters...:
that is an old pic... just to refresh the memory...
tomorrow i will show you nice and shiney pics of daylight... of the work i am currently doing to them...
also i built a warmachine light warjack...
note not my work here...i took no pics atm so this is only a stand in... but pics will follow shortly...
so i hope this thread will spark up some new life support^^
cheers, vik
and at shrike... nice to have you back for a short glimpse^^ and i cross fingers for your coming exams...i know that it seems like the end of the tunnel is a nearing train...but some day all is over and the coming holiday season will then be all too more nice for you!
yep^^ with warmachine minis the riveting is over even before i could have a go^^ well ...there is still room but...
as promised here are the pics of my recent work...
at rogue...they are more of the spirit of the riveters instead of resembling actual members... for some reason i am not up to the task to medle with GSatm...
the warjack...
he will be getting a wooden boiler and i hope i can make a little glow effect on the vents and the boiler door as well on the eyevisor...we will see about that...
and the riveters...
do you think a matching scheme is better or would you think that an individual paintjob on them would be better?
thanks dave!
i know if you zoom in there are some difficulties with the basecoat of some of the colors, but i guess some more coats of paint will solve that...
I wouldn't worry about that, the paint never really "pops" until that one highlight layer anyways. I haven't had the desire to even pick up a paintbrush lately myself.
no he is only goofing around with his mates at work... he is douing his best IGOR impersonating sketch...
also i never did think of them for any ingame value... but now that you mention it... hmmm... this also reminds me of the dire need of a master techpriest then...hmmm indeed...
I've brilliantly decided to build These and also American Civil War Playmo Armies Vik, that way, the cannon and horses for Cavalry can be used for both games
Viktor von Domm wrote:thanks rogue^^ do you have a suggestion for a wash on the grey parts?
Hmm thats a tough one, mainly because with your earthy colors you chose it would be obvious to go with Badab Black, or Devlan Mud, Could also be Griphonne Sepia. Those are the easy way out (which i would take) The harder using the colorfull washes like the reds and purples and blues, harder being that you cant over do it otherwise it would look waay to out of place on the otherwise earthy mini
too bad most vids can´t be seein here for me...dang germany...
so these are the yanks shooting...? thought they were some frogs...hmmm... nice cool shot... but then your blues had a point plank situation... so hardly the real mastery of precision needed^^ also the wad is a nice touch... really reminds me of the movie The Patriot ...
but you do realise that you show mowed down brits on a thread devoted for praetorians... i am shocked to see so many redfrocks getting such an ungentlemen behavior treatment...tsktsktsk...
and rogue... they still smile because the in the end...britannia rules the waves^^
oh and i too thought about using brownish washes... but i had considered using asuremen blue too... but i think sepia or ogryn flesh or even devlan mud would be better given the already set way with the earthy tones
Wha? your Internet is censored?
I think the Blues could count for either French or Americans. Historically I am thinking War of 1812, I'd just need more Shako stovepipe hats.
The blues are simply winning so far because they have the best technology (Cannons). But I can only get these cannons in American Civil War sets 3 auctions won, 1 to go and I'll have 4 Cannon.
The fight will be more balanced soon.
you are a real mean person.... showing that stuff... i had just that package when i was my sons age... i loved that cannon to pieces... literally^^ and the bullets i hold most dear!!!
now you need a´n old horse with carriage "pulles"- thinggummies... and you need amocrates and stuff... the kids (oskar precisly) will get this here for nicolaus day...( a day where sweets and toys can be found in buffed up boots and shoes of kids...)
i think with playmo you have to decide how much realism or anachronism you can cope with... for cannons the one you have is pretty good already... all the others would be either way smaller...as they are more shipmounted and the rest is way more boxylooking as they are for the knightssetting... also there is mortars...:
limited possibiliteis but still serving some nice appetite^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: and yeah most vids you amis and brits are showing i can´t see... rights and stuff... rather makes me go mad^^
may i ask how far you are bidding on those older figures?
and yep... that movie i could view... it is rather music related when it is germany blocked... but that doesn´t mean you cant view music vids from youtube... it is rather soddin´luck and hit and run to get some cool vids there...
many of those minis from the vid remebered me f my childhood.,.. ah... the sweet times...i rememeber fondly how the yanks battled my confederates and also the occasional pirates the both of them... and of course i had indipendance wars too... those were the days...(on my carpet i mean^^)
my sister had a big payhouse that often did for a HQ of some sorts for the atm leading army of my imagination^^ the soldiers then protected the family my sis played^^
I'm not going more than $25. These pictured are vintage clickies I think (no rotating wrists), If they are newer, I won't mind much. but you can still get new army builder packs of 3 Union or Confederate soldiers for $10- It is still cheaper than GW
definite cheaper than GW... but then again what isn´t^^ these aren´t clickies...as can be seen by the felshcolored hands... they are twistable...because...when clickie- time was around the minis only came in so many hues around... and that bright blue wasn´t around back then... me knows the stuff quite well... real clieckies are highly sought for atm... but i recon the4se could go for that priece or even less if you are lucky! which i hope...because more would mean less...less men^^
They call all of the figures clickies now, weren't the older ones harder to take apart? I thought they got that name from the click sound you get when you fit the body parts on? The sets seem to hold their value, but vintage loose figures don't appear to hold much value on ebay at least. The horses are the old stiff-legged type, the new horses look a lot better IMHO. At least they call them Klickies on the PlaymoDB site http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/category.pl?category=Klicky-Adult male.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Vik, if the 1st Gen (vintage) of Playmos 1974-198? can be told by the lack of twisty wrists, is that when the molding colors you are talking about changed as well? Do you think the Playmo artillery set I am bidding on is 2nd Gen mid-late 1980s (lack of painted shirts, etc.) or newer?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, re-reading your post I think I know what you mean now Vik..Real Klickies are your way of saying "vintage" old 1970s playmos. Sorry, ya, these are newer, but how much newer? They re-released this Artillery Limber set 10 times over the years I bet.
you are straight on the money mate... the old (vernerable ones^^) had only simple colors for bodies , liegs and arms...like red, yellow, white, blue and green... without any twisty hands... like so:
then came the twisty secend generation...:
still simple colors without printings on the bodies...you mostly used belts and scarves these days to detail them up...
then, and this is where we are now...:
note look at feet, and arms... a whole new range of forms and shapes... see the alien ...he even got the armor built in on the arm...the second edition before had to use armor clickable on the arm...
well i grew up with the realy old klickies...then fully came into swing with the second generation minis and now i see the new stuff creeping all around me in our whole flat due to my sons work... it all boils down to this...whatever i think was great...the new generation will say otherwise...but i have one fact to tell... we now own three figs that only have one feet each... the new minis have seperate feet instead of the molded in feet as the second and first generation minis... and these new feet can crack off easy... and for now i havent found a good playmobil glue...
Automatically Appended Next Post: ha!!! you beat me... but all i wrote was learned by my own^^
also nice moustache... your is missing that one tho^^
I feel like I've been slacking, it's been so long since I've posted on your thread, El Vik. Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute on the Playmobile side of things

*frowns* so why are you then here in denmark? military guy or just civil work relations?...once curiosity is ignited....

Certainly no offence taken. Here's the short version:
When we were living in the States, my wife and I did a lot of volunteer work for our church, which we enjoyed greatly. We decided that we wanted to do that full time, and, as it turned out, we have a sister church in Copenhagen that was hiring, so... Now we live here and work for a free church in Copenhagen (instead of as an engineer and social worker ourside of Seattle)
aha...sounds interresting...and different certainly...may i ask what free church... i had a run in with some more of the evangelical churches some years back then and it was quite a hurtful time...
I already have at least a dozen mustached smiley heads, I think I'm good there Thanks for the tip about the feet. I prefer the variety of bitz to customize the growing armies (you can't collect just one army!)

Kristi Kirke i København in Danish, otherwise known as the Copenhagen Church of Christ. Also, PM'd.

thanks mates for your support by the way... i love that community of friends here!!!

well...tried to have a resting off of dakka... but i think i am addicted^^
Common Vik! Dont you have an IG army to work on? And Stein, what about your catachans artillery?!?!?!?!? Plus you cant put rivets on a playmobile figure so you two should be ashamed of yourselves, well at least Vik has an exuse (children)
I just skimmed through this and even then It took me more than an hour! There is some very inspiring stuff here. I've subscribed to this thread and I can't wait to see more.
Awww, I'm sorry man. I know how you feel, although I kept all my Legos, my evil stepmom gave away all my GI Joe toys, including my USS FLAGG aircraft Carrier, the best Christmas present I have ever, or would ever receive.
if your talking about the barbie sized Gijoes, not the small ones, I have a giant tub of them from when i was a kid, never gave any away (im bad at losing my old toys) and the best thing about my neice and nephew is that i can play with my toys and it dosent seem odd (:, I also have a deluxe replica of Darth Vader Gijoe sized, that could change between III Anaken and Vader, it is the cooliest toy/collectible I own although i lost both lightsaber tops a long long time ago, in a galaxy far away (when i lived on eastern coast as a child)
that pic of yours dave is quite charming...but i know who lost muhawwaaawwwaa^^
at Johnny-Crass .... well that now intrigues me... would love to see that conversion...and it smells expensive even now^^
for some reason only the recent movie did it for me... well not really the movie but the baroness in that yummy catsuit obviously... the rest i got no kicks out of...never...*shrugs*
but:
You are sitting on a Gold Mine there Rogue!
methinks too...
at Flying Pooo thanks mate for joining in on the fun... be sure to leave the brains to the girl at the cloakroom^^
hey anvildude... long time no word of ye! glad you are back! well... my kids today got each a calendar for the christmas time to open up a pocket each day... and guess what? it is a lego pirat one^^
and again at dave:
Do you want us to convert a Playmo to 40k? lol
that thought did cross my quite a lot the recent days... the size dictates something at least ogrynlike... i think i would get away with such a conversion more easier as i could declare it a steampunky device...now you really set me on a path here...
I have a spare rocker guy now, you had a good idea to convert him to a Catachan, it would allow me to scratch build a styrene lasrifle, of course this would just be a proof of concept project. Hmmm maybe.
Vik, given your outrageous array of playmobil bits, could you do a size comp pic of a playmobil cowboy/confederate type hat with an ork? I have plans...
inmygravenimage wrote:Vik, given your outrageous array of playmobil bits, could you do a size comp pic of a playmobil cowboy/confederate type hat with an ork? I have plans...
will try to do so...but for the right playmobil model you should ask dstein here... he has the right models all around him... but i wiull do my best tomorrow for a neat sizecomparrision...
hazzer...yep will do so in a minute...but remember diversion is the middlename of that thread^^
dave... scratchbuilt lasgun fit for a playmobil model... now that would be awsome! maybe you could get some of these here for a base:
the first one could be for looks only as the fighter couldn´t hold the gun in a good pose...the second gun would be exellent for your idea...pose and details already quite useable...
so update time already!!! the painting competition is at it´s finishing line now and this is my as good as they get entry...: the riveters...
as for fluff...
Spoiler:
the air was sooty and thick with steam and heat...a loud and almost deafening noiselevel produced by the working men made the effort to listen to your own workrythem quite impossible...yet the men never flinched or stayed idle for more than a few moments to take in ther most recent work. because the men knew that the imperium did not take lightly with the riveting of their builts... a construction was always secured by an odplex of rivets all neatly arranged in just the right amount of distance to provide the maximum of durability for vehicles or buildings. for the Queen thy built and ruined theor mortal shells to sever and uphold the empire in Her name... Sweat running into their eyes, hunger or tiredness couldn´t stop these riveters for completing their duties...they were dedicated men of the craft and new their place and held pride to their work...the empire needed them as the foundation of it´s prowess...unneamed they stayed for millions of servants of the mighty empire but not without worth... because each soldier fully well knew that the riveters all around in Her Majesties lands did their duty and made strong and dependable products...
i am aware that the skin is not what i had originally intended it to look like... but skin is a real toughy for me...much will have to be learned here... tho one thing that competition has teached me is to dilute the paints much more and to aply very thin coats....and many of that...
so...
and when one thing ends another thing starts... which is why i have today started to paint the black devils...the kilt wearing wild bunch of my scottish special team...the Dòmhnall Dubh`s 32th Light Infantry Regiment
these three minis here are the first in line...standard bearer is for now the most important mini here as i have to try to get a smooth and crisp white color to the flag... this alone is costing lots of nerves... so a lil praise would be helping^^
the one with the feather in his cap will be the test model for a kilt wearer... tartans i would like to add... currently i am not sure if the red kilt will stay or should be replaced by a black basecoat? and then added with red and white stripes? what do you think?
Oh, wait. you have posted work up here to quickly for me to respond to it all. I take ages to post things because I check for spelling and grammar for around 5min each post.
I REALLY like your Dòmhnall Dubh`s 32th Light Infantry Regiment. That flawless look of WHFB bits and 40K mashed up together in such inventive ways, is absolutely awesome. Those kilts from Victoria miniatures fit in so well too. You must have bottomless bits boxes because you use so many different bits to such great effect. I recently bought two mega bits grab bags from the Warstore and can't wait for them to arrive so I can get converting! I also can't wait for more of your IG and all the other things you will produce.
yeppers, ihad a period of great bitzbox luck on ebay... got many different stuff from all over GW... elves and emprire and mordheim and of course 40k a lot... and i am not afraid to mix it like hell.. the 32th Light is supposed to be a veteran squad so they look more ruffed up and a bit cynic in behavior...the conversion bit is the most important bit for me of the complete hobby... i started with SM and heavily converted them too... but then the possibilities with IG are nearly endless... i have yet to try out some tau bitz or maybe some more DE bitz for special units... orks are currently in favor to me for their bulky weapons that go quite well to transport the steampunk look i like...
IG are defiantly much easier to convert than SM. IG have so many compatible bits from GW ranges and other companies bits, the possibilities are endless.
Although Orks are even easier IMHO. Even with just GW bits and a bunch of scrap you can create some truly unique minis. Although there are some awesome bits from other companies like Kromlech.
I have a small Ork army. Very small actually. But every one of them is converted slightly.
Ork vehicles and buildings are by far the easiest to make. Because they are basically just a heap of scrap stuck together, preferably with rivets. I'm making a killa kan at the moment out of a toilet paper roll, cardboard, wires, Ork biits and plasticard. And it's looking alright for what it is made out of. I have to start an Ork blog now too. As I am suddenly inspired.
yeah you do that... would love to see what you do with a paperroll...the thing with that is that you have to cover up that rolled up structure quite good... otherwise you can easyly see the material shine through... same thing with those pringles rolls...they are often used for terrain and if not masked up properly can look not right...
if you have seen storags stuff here on dakka ... those are currently some of the most unique looking orks out there... those and of course monkeytroll´s ...his cyborks are also highly converted and have thus risen above those usualy hunched figures...
i hope i haven´t dampened your spirits for orks now...wasn´t my intention...
welll i am off for bed now... the new day will rise soo enough...*yawn*
you just had to do that dave...didn´t you... that is such an awesome idea... and i even have already at least two warbands ready for that... darn... now i have to really think hard... and if i´d show you our buildings from playmobil here i bet i could set up a good table in a few minutes...argh^^
found the boltaction rifles in the net... they were with the british sets back in the mid `90s i think...
tho the posing with these arms would be crappy looking... only chrging is looking usefull here... no shooty poses available there...which for me kills that guntype in game...same with the blunderbus...
but if you would be inclined to make a more vostroyan sniper... how about that beautiful gun here:
HAZZER wrote:Yay, thanks vik back to 40k atlast! love to see more of the riverters or the other guys anyway!LOL!
HAZZER
Couldnt agree more , this is what its all about mate , great stuff you produced there, the riveters are perfect , in form , the paint scheme is a little more dirty than your usual style , but they work well as a team . And the Scottish guys are equally creative , gotta love those kilts. You have done her Majesty proud
HAH you ain´t seen nuthin`as i will shortly update...
big question before...how to do convincingly tartan patterns to the kilts? i tried but failed miserably...but i have tested and refined my whitepainting skills so the scotts will bring on the new and brighter scheme for all of my chaps...mom...
Tartan pattern on the kilts hey? Have you tried using masking tape to paint straight lines. It worked with my Orks and their checkered patterns, it could work for the tartan pattern on the kilt. It would be considerably harder though. If it doesn't work you'll have to do it the old fashioned way, freehand with a steady hand.
Good luck to you sir!
if there is a tut out there i would be very glad to receive a nudge in that direction^^
well promised an update but earlier on family life interrupted...
so here are the nominees...:
groupshots w/o flash
groupshots w flash
single shots...
the last pics show the generall direction my praetorian paintscheme will be now heading too... shoulderpads are black for the platoon of the black devils...but the white carpace will be from now on the major eyecatcher and pain in my but^^ but i love the bright colors there...
WELL THEN GET BACK TO THE PAINTING TABLE! You can't sleep until they are done... I want to see some progress.
ER...Ummm.. I mean take your time do them whenever you want. It should be very hard work.
You will need a very steady hand. Do what I do when I paint fine detail or freehand. Listen to Bullet For My Valentine or other suitable heavy music. I find that it really helps me concentrate..no joke!
been busy with tests and new games, and it's pretty late, but as usual, good work! I love the banner bearer's head- looks like he should have a pipe...
well that might be a good idea... if i wasn´t listening to rock all of the time anyways^^ no pop, no metal... rock all the way!
as for progress.... tomorrow (it is atm nearing 02:00 CET) i have plenty of time as the house is empty... wife and kids are on their way to the dreadful inlaws so i can paint like the devil^^
but me needs sleep... so i figure 20 min now and i´ll be off...and in bed... not on the table painting...don´t hit me^^
lol... why are all kids your age so easy to turn violent for the sake of my hobby... as shrike... he always has a shotgun with him... i see a pattern....tststs...
^^ But kids our age are impatient....we have our needs! Now where is MY shotgun. Wait I don't have one its Australia not America! Wait Shrike is English wasn't he? How did he get that shotgun?
Viktor von Domm wrote:lol... why are all kids your age so easy to turn violent for the sake of my hobby... as shrike... he always has a shotgun with him... i see a pattern....tststs...
good things happen to those who wait...lol...
Don't say I'm violent! *cocks shotgun*
Flying Pooo wrote:^^ But kids our age are impatient....we have our needs! Now where is MY shotgun. Wait I don't have one its Australia not America! Wait Shrike is English wasn't he?
And I am, I have a very englishmanly double-barreled shotgun- perfect for hunting foxes, osprey and germans.
^LOL I wish they were not so strict with firearms in Australia. We aren't even allowed to own air soft and paint ball guns without a licence. And you have to be over 18 to get one. Much different than my home town of Johannesburg where you HAVE to have a firearm. To protect yourself from the prawns, the muggers and other violent people.
Viktor von Domm wrote:yep he is an english man...so i too wonder where he will get a shotgun...but well...he who asks might get the first shot^^
and impatient?...the youth of today...*shakes head*
I got it from my grandfather, which he used to hunt commoners on sunday mornings.
yeah, it is such a trite thing to see all those mere mortals on their way to backbreaking labour on a sunday morning... makes you want to shoot the whole world...there is such a thing as style...for heavens sake...
er... you have a point there... at this stage i should really change the bases....good of you to remind me...i kind of built the minis and then never thought about it...^^
lol...i had some fleeting thoughts about changing those bases earlier on, but i highly doubt the deployment of the armies in the nearer future... so i shoved that thoughts away... but i think you showed me the way^^
now get back to your desk mate and paint like the devil^^
Hey Vik , the last scottish trooper with the kilt is gorgeous . very brave colour scheme too , C M dante did an excellent painting chips on white Armour tutorial here http://cmdante.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-paint-chipped-armour-tutorial.html thought it might come in handy for your carapaces . cant wait to see more from these guys , also you should know my next project will involve caulkers drillers and riveters , thanks for the inspiration matey. ;-)
well... that work could very well bring you into the inner circle of the leaque^^
nilce linky there... i built mine from random bitz and not doing some research but it seems i was not that far away from a historical point of view with my creations... will be nice to see your take on that subject... will you do a four to five man team as described on the linky?... i really hope you do a dio with that idea... some steelplates or possibly a tank^^ cobnbled together^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: and cm dante is sure one heck of a good painter and sculpter... that chipped armor looks very good!
Viktor von Domm wrote:the ship by the way is finished...and i didn´t realize i had not updated it... must be a mental fault^^ will do so immediately^^
And? Did they like it or what?!?!
Viktor von Domm wrote:but if you would be inclined to make a more vostroyan sniper... how about that beautiful gun here:
I guess if you have to play with PM, having Vostroyans would be the lesser of two evils
Viktor von Domm wrote:
Alright! Some 40k stuff! Whoo hoo! I really dig the kilt-fantry! What range are the kilts actually from, btw? The two guys above are my favorites: the "battle's over, time to go home" plasma guy and the pot helmet/kilt combo on the second.
I think your skin areas could look a lot better with minimal effort. I have a really east receipe for flesh: elf flesh, gryphonne sepia wash, highlight with elf flesh. Don't need a lot of paints, don't have to blend anything, and I think it looks just fine. Give it a try!
As for the tartan: if it were me, I'd probably try a dark-ish base color (I think your red would work fine), highlight as normal, and then add some thin contrasting lines over the top. The tricky part will be all of the folds (but google image search might be helpful there, just to get an idea). You also could check out Mastiff's thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/240539.page He does a lot of tartan work.
I don't think he's trying to go all Braveheart here Shrike lol. Besides how does one ride a horse in a kilt? Makes my voice squeak just thinking about it
johnny crass...it would be nice to use that sig when we both get a bit better known to each other as for now i never saw you around and using that around here now could be a bit offensive...wouldn´t you say so... imagine me using americans as a substitute in that sig...
playmobil will have a bit of a rest i think... warhammer taking on now^^
at jeroen... i think you showed me the big daddy earlier ...before your hiatus...and yep... all thise kilts legs are from vic miniatures... which is a big concidence^^ or is it kharma?^^
at shrike... well i have the more muscled up guys in the squad already and with there bare skin i think they would be kind of ideal for some tats and some warcolors...but then...even if there are scotts...blue is out of the question for them... the queen is in mourning still after the last millenias and blue is replaced by black most of the times...but i could live with some red lines and halved faces for the catchan influenced guys...
like:
thanks rawson...yep i will take that suggestion of making skin ... the beefy looking catachans will definatly need an easy way for me to make some good looking skin...they have so much of that... and yep, the plasma guy was exactly what i had in mind for...that exhausted after battle look...^^
and they did like the ship... but for many reasons it is now collecting dzust... i guess there dad needs to find time to fill the ship with ideas and life so that the kids can use it with more ideas...
Automatically Appended Next Post: here is an update of some sorts... had a reply on my army painter thread...
I don't really get the colour of carapace armor. Black shoulders, dark red base and white raised areas? I think these are too many colours for a single item. And the dark red base for the carapace armour will make it blend too much with the dark red clothing.
made a mistake there... the greyer version of yours with the boots and the shoulderpads sure has a thing to it... the headgear and the shoulders are but the merest tribute to the name of the platoon...the blck devils... later on i had planned to do some free handed horns on the shoulders in red... so black there is kind of mandatory...
Last one sounds about right vik white carapace looks cool, great linky too btw , thanks for that. The space wolf box has lots of crazy big haired feral heads , that would really suit the wolverine look, if you don't want spend on the box set , which is really good value in my opinion with something like 56 heads in http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod260003a i might have a few spare laying around .?
if you could part with some of them i would be too fevered to refuse that offer mate^^ ...heads make the character...and i have some bretonian bodies that just scream for some attention^^ so i would accept these as an honor^^
jeroen...yep...age of apocalypse was one of my favorite storylines of ymen too... been there since the way back marouder storyline and have about for before the films stopped collecting the books...but yep, that is the way i would like to go paintwise for the more catachan looking highlanders...
the armypainter is pretty neat eh? i really like to play with that idea and for upcoming ideas it is too a great way of playing around... so many combinations...
at shaso... mounted officer...yeah...that would be nice...hmmm...need to see if i have some suitable riding legs for that idea... i could use some pistoliers bodies for this...those i have and also a suitable steed...hmmm indeed...
by the way...rawson? got my pm i sent you the other day? if the pm was too much...just say the word...
wolverines healing power has shifted from time to time... he has survived bulletshots through his skull and even severe punishments... that lost hand is due to a storyline of that AoA thing... totaly set apart from the main universe plot and so i think for style the one handed wolvie has to be accepted as a given thing... tho i recall seeing claws extend from that stump too...
and yep deadpool is pretty viscious when it comes to humor and healing...after all he was created after wolvies image...when it comes to the healing...not the humor obviously^^
The Claws from the stump was the big dark secret in the storyline. Initially he fought with only one claw and then at a climax battle the second ones emerged from the stump. Ahh Age of Apocalypse; where Xavier had died and Magneto and Sabretooth were good guys.....
well for me magneto always was one of the good guys...he had a vision and he had a plan to arrive to that vision... smae with lord vader or for that matter...viktor von doom... all these great dictators have something dark in them that they used for the bettering of the world...the fact that they lost during these endeavors made them monsters in the eye of the opposition...but if they had succeded then all would praise them... there was even an artvovel of the anvengers... there von doom actually won for the better part of the story and he was the kind of ruler that brought peace and punctuality to the world...freedom was the only thing the world then lacked...makes ojne thinking some serious thoughts...eh?
there is a certain dr. suess vibe to it... for some reason that came to my mind^^ where are rather why did you find it? and yep, liked it...but...was there some text to be understood? i was second guessing my english know how^^
longer than that i belive, and his books should be a good test to your english, picking out fake words and all, although that can be hard for even an american! ( to me funner IS a word )
my mentality is that if it sounds good enough then im going to use it, im sure the first time someone said apple the guys where like wtf did you just call me red eating castle!?
the explorers of australia...flollowing bthe saga tho... asked the aborigines what these hopping animals where... and in essence the pees gone...WTF??? what do you want? can´t understand you??? but the britsh guys thought...kangaroo...nice name...for a big rat...
I first saw that on "The Animation Show" a collection of strange, unique animators from around the world. There is nothing to understand, it is just phonetically pleasing gibberish with a gibberish bass line
hey mates...we yesterday built some random lego mins and i thought i´d share this small bunch with you... mixture of british flavored catachans and praetorians... i think rather self explaining^^
Should be on your computer already, unless you have a *gasp* Mac, or something like that! Ewwe!
Anyway, best way is to right click on the picture you want to edit and select "OPEN WITH" and choose Paint. Then just zoom in, if it's not already too small, and add a little Christmas cheer!
dunno about that one...i use gimp... got quite some education for PS and i have to say... gimp does nearly everyzhing PS can but frankly...PS is better as it is a tad better to use... but then it costs a ton...and gimp is for free...so i stick with gimp...simple as that... priorities...what i would like to know is...does gimp work well together with a tablet and this pen? i think my wife might be up to something like that for my chrimbo package... i´ve oggled for one of these for quite some time now...
at jeroen... the upper pic is more a bunch of catachan soldiers...so no white heads... see their bare arms? all yellow?^^ the other group do wear pith helmets ... the lights are poor for that pic but i asure ye...they are off white...
at neil... yep i looked in our bitzbox...er... toybox^^ and searched for quite some time to finally find a suitable evil looking face/head... the new stuff lego is chucking out even has two faces each head...now you have even options^^ more roleplay that way in lego!
also note the hook...makes him extra evillooking^^
at dave... the helmets accumulated for quite some time... and every time i rummaged around in our legos i always thought about them... being way overproportioned in comparrision for 40k i even thought about using them as a base for some ogryns for 40k... a pith helmet just oozes steampunk... my next project will be a walker for the lot...^^
I've been kind of distracted lately- I got oblivion on wednesday (8 days ago)- 52 hours played so far But I love the heavy gunner and the officer (the ones on the far right on both pics).
I think the only reason we don't play lego is the image of it being kiddy, though really we all love it.
ah... i have my kids for the sake of an argument^^ that covers my needs quite good^^
and yep... like both very much too... the bricks i used is the most shocking part here... the heavy gun is basically made from a jack-hammer^^...
and 52 hours playtime in 8 days...that´s around 6 to 7 hours a day worth playtime...i can see you will like worklife^^ you are accustomed to the amount of time already^^

Well I've had exams all this week and last week, plus nearly 70 hours at school the week before, so I figured I'd have some free time this week ^^
Gimp does actually have tablet functionality. It's limited by the quality of your tablet, of course (for example, I have a cheapo $20 tablet that does not have pressure sensitivity, and only a few macros) but GIMP itself has options for pressure, speed, and all the other things a tablet can do.
Only thing is, it is in fact a little less user friendly, and has fewer built-in brushes and 'special effects', so no lensflare or mosaic filter- but you can find tutorials and third-party addons all over the place for it.
at jeroen... the upper pic is more a bunch of catachan soldiers...so no white heads... see their bare arms? all yellow?^^ the other group do wear pith helmets ... the lights are poor for that pic but i asure ye...they are off white...
Vik I was referring to the one at the bottom actually the color scheme christmas guard thingy
aahhh...now i am understanding you fully^^ ...
but for me santa...he is supposed to look a bit like a grim dark DKoK santa after all... should wear a red cap...
at anvil... hey thanks mate... this is quite good news then... and the updates i could then later instal when the lil helper of santa delivered whats what^^
well...i got actually teached in school MS apint...i know that is pretty crappy for any school, but well...as a kid...what are you supposed to tell the teach when they come up with such a lame theme for class...
for that time on a pc i wish i wasn´t born then^^ the only good memory was some old lucas arts games like day of the tentacle or maniac mansion...and of course then my reason to work as a schoolboy and get me my own pc...x-wing...back in the days...freaking cool...
Ahhhh, X-wing! So cool for the time! It was better than arcade graphics!
But I didn't get to play it much, just on a friends PC, and he didn't like to let people touch his "baby", so it wasn't often. But I did have to work on a PC at work, and it had MS Paint, and I could spend hours on it! That and minesweeper!
I had an epiphany in my moment of rousing today and came up with a fantastic idea for your army. It is for a unit of Rough Riders which aren't the best unit out there but I think you will like my idea.
But lets keep it a secret for these miscreants out here on your thread for a while longer. You know how to get in touch.
So, perhaps I missed a fluffy explanation somewhere, but what's with all of the "queen" stuff? It's in your fluff for the riveters and on your Komandant Klean guy.
Ahh Vik's army is from a planet based off of Victorian England. Ergo it is ruled by The Queen and the army are of course all the kings men
So he is going for a Victorian Steampunk Army, which is just made of all kinds of awesome. It is also why I donated the kilts and such to make a unit of irregulars.
Edit: I should know better than to glue and write on Dakka....almost glued my finger to my mouse.
at rawson... i guess up till now i only ever did small passages of fluff... i think i wont get away with that anymore... so i will likley have to come up with some good stuff now...but except one small ppint jeroen is spot on with the short description of the fluff...
@RSJake Done my christmas avatar but MS paint is beeing a pain and is not letting me cropp from both sides so the image is too large to upload. grrrrrrr!
The ice had long gone, of course, long before the seas themselves went during the sacrilegious bombardment of Holy Terra by the forces of the Great Traitor. All that was left behind was bare rock, rippled and whorled into a new sea of glassy, black stone from the unimaginable forces unleashed during those darkest of days.
Seeking new territory on Holy Terra came the Inquisition; the dread Ordo Hereticus. From one pole, already the site of their hidden headquarters, to another, new dungeons to exhume. Under this fused and newly-frozen ocean the Inquisition dug, deep into the tortured bedrock they went, new halls and chambers won from the cold, dead stone, and filled with unnameable and eldritch secrets wrenched bleeding from a galaxy of horrors, stored far beneath the surface, never to rise.
Their labyrinthine delvings continued over the decades and centuries that followed, their underground empire branching new limbs and organs in the stygian depths, but the rumours that had plagued the sunken fortress of despair could not be buried.
Rumours of a man who stalked the tunnels, the corridors, the hallways in the eternal night, wreathed in red fire and rimmed with hoar-frost. Rumours of a man who was not a man, a daemon who could not be caught, not even by those who hunted the greatest and most mortal enemies of the Imperium. A cursed revenant of ages past who appeared once every year, evading security systems that could catch the mote in a man’s eye, one breath in a hurricane, the shadow of a shadow. Locked doors could not stop him, trusted steel and adamantium like rain unto a wave, and so the Inquisition huddled in their cells once a year, terrified to fall asleep.
But sleep they must, and sleep they did. And awoke, in the fake morning of that fake night, to find by their beds a single piece of darkest coal and always the echo, fading away down the endless halls and tunnels.
at jeroen... that was a very nice read...i will later on look into that thread you showed... if that guy is so talented...
and the pic is very good...a nurgle santa... if you think about it the whole thing is quite clear... think about caries due to too much candy during the season...now it all makes sense...
at Hazzer... now that is a nice avatar...
at dave...
The riveting madness is all Vik's idea though.
that is what you try to make the audience think...
at jeroen yet again...answered your recent PM...^^

Scratch-built piwate ship, playmobil through the ages, lego piwate ships, kilt-wearing loonies wielding las-guns in her Majesty's name, a bunch of riveters and assorted inanities.
lol... yep...your thread is still on my to do list monkey...it is such a huge update that you frightened me off at first^^ but i will sieve through eventually^^
lol...well yours is full of new fluff msuings about your work and actually new minis too...and vehicles when it comes down to that... so more of a concentration job there^^ mine is more about witty banter...with a given value of wit^^
long time no real update mates...yes i know... the painting of the scotts is shlepping atm... much private life in the way^^ coming holidaystuff and all such things...
one thing tho... santas big sack for the kids has been already filled... so this is kind of a suply drop in the future...i thought with the recent interrest in lego and playmobil i share you the expierience my wife and me had just today... yesterday we bought an auction on ebay for this...:
and today it was already there... boy did we look surprised as we received that big box full of fresh legos...and i only whisoer that this was quite a bargain...
Nice find Vik! The boys will be VERY happy Christmas day! btw, I have a playmobil boat and a bunch of accessories I don't want packed up for them, but I haven't shipped it yet. Do you think it would get there by Christmas if I dropped it in the mail?
at tortured robot...well we bought it already... and i think the major part of the stuff i get to assemble anyway... so no need to steal that stuff^^
at dstein... i hope that the bys will be happy...i now they like that atlantis stuff...some of the other kits we already own...
as for the playmobil...er... i am at a los for words... but then... there is no stopping you i guess...^^ but on a serious note...i highly doubt that any transcontinental packages will arrive on time... tho maybe a christmas wonder might happen from time to time... usually american stuff arrives after at least two weeks... so...higly doubtable to get here for chrimbo on time... argh... now you make me feel all edgy for christmans too^^
aye... aplenty of sharks... and big ones at that... with lazer^^
but i recon dady won´t be getting any bitz soonish off of that...
and to tell a truth... my sons are more likely to give than their dad is to receive... i think i only can ever use the odd bit here and there... don´t like corrupting the lego of my sons for my darker needs in 40k^^ tho we all know there is plenty of good stuff in legobitz...
But if Vader thinks they are going too slow, and he cuts one of them, the fish stick minced stuff will come out, and then he will just have to go slower.
cool sleigh though., nice find with the Lego Atlantis stuff. now you will be able to make that ground tunneler for your earth angels or was that angels ;-)
lol...neil... not forgetting that hussle i had all those moons long ago?^^ lol...
it is tempting... maybe i go down town and try to pressmould that pice... thus technically not stealing from my kids and still getting that formed bit^^ a win-win situation^^
at jake:
How did Vader know Luke was a good boy?
He felt his presents!
ba dum tishhhh! lol
at dave... he gots a mask...mate didn´t you know...mistress skywalker didn´t birth that blackmasked monster/diktator/rolemodel right from the start... it took quite a big amount of hard work, blood and sweat... well blood admittedly off of other people..but still...^^
at tortured... lol...one of my favorite quotes of the man !
