i always was under the assumption that in the movies the stormtoopers had their pants dropping at evry gunfight... compared to the fluff of the SW license they had to be elite troops not that pansy bums that always stood where they get shot dead soonest...

i´ve read way back some good books done by some brilliant authors and every time stormtroopers are really bad ass fighters... and in the movies... one could cry... i am after all a fan of the empire...so sad...

An article I read a looong time ago but the last few comments reminded me. It is about the storm trooper accuracy (or lack thereof )

at jeroen... part of the perverted i grant you that... fluff i liked about the stormtoopers in the books was that they are vicious killers... which would totally erase the point made in that article... tho if we are talking any WWI /II soldiers i would say this article is true to the letter... it just isn´t really possible to superimpose the image of a WW evet to a stormtrooper... but then the link to the official explenation is totally crappy ...

My GF has been patiently waiting for Star Wars. She is what you'd call an MMO pro, she'll kick yer ass in WoW.!
I would play minecraft online, but haven't really tried it. The first server I joined appeared at first glance to be populated by 8 year olds, based on the chat channel.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
wow is infested by 8 year old easy to frustrate children... and chineese and unwashed peeps that sit there for 24/7... i should now^^...
but you only ever meet the peeps who don´t fit in either of the before named categories... i played through the second big update and stoped amit the thrid one...as it became more obvious that storyline is something that happens in other games and that it more and more reminds me of worklife... after that realization i had to quit... although i still own a low equipet paladin and a DK... the death knight being the only cool storyline ever...^^
star wars online... dang one of these days i have to ask my wife for some spending money... and what should i then choose... mmorpg or paints, brushes and kits? argh... decisions, decisions...

My Christmas is already over.
It's 1am Boxing Day here. I need to get to sleep! I'm not tired though because my body is in holiday sleeping mode!
AND I HAD HEAPS OF CANDY FOR CHRISTMAS!
Calming down now...
Your using cork? Cork makes awesome slate, rubble and debris!
Is this going to be an Urban base?
Have I great Christmas!
I'm going to try and get some sleep!
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
sugar and coffey are the main ingredients for staying awake...^^
i thought of maybe making a a bit of a trench terrain for this dio...the cork plate will be merely for the support of the dio... tho i give you that that the cork does very good slate and rocks! depends all on the paintjob!
i hope you have some good and refreshing sleep...later on you can invest that energy gain through sleep into some nice orky scratchbuilts? now that is a good thought^^
by the way... i recommend flying poos scratchbuilt thread... he built a dreadnought and a orky segway from scratch... something everyone should check out!

sorry guys lack of updates is freaking expanding... at christmas eve we (my wife and me) discovered a leack in the plumbings of our kitchen under the sink that had caused severe soaking of wooden cupboards... all this we now baught new... must be built and then refitted under the sink and the new hearth we baught in the same effort... that is taking up quite some time and to top it all we still have the kids at home as it is still their freetime of off the kindergarden...so i next to nothing have time to make any progress around the little dio i have planned...
also i stumbled on some plans of an ATAT and ATST...maybe these will be the base for a new project that is forming in my mind...stay tuned...

Scene: thick woods, birds chirping, animals start to run, crunching noises overshadowed by the sound of servos powered by steam and the Chuft-chuft sound of a steam motor repeating black smoke billowing off riveted brass and steel bipedal walkers with the cannons mounted on the "chins" their turrets swiveling as they seek targets hidden in the woods.
28141

maybe you need to attach the rivets to other rivets?

Well, Europeans hold the stereotype of Americans as all owning guns. So I will just roll with that and

And Vik, you NEED to build the steampunk AT- ST out of PLASTIC, not cardboard! If you need more supplies, let me know
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
lol... i guess i will be set for this built as is... the stock is quite big enough thanks to your earlier carepackage^^
and i thought as much the same... also this might in the long run provide me with the option to maybe cast the thingy... which would be a totally sweet thing^^
the main reason i have not really made progress with PC is the glue issue i have not solved yet... i need to find a good glue and then literally all would be set...
48594
Post by: dsteingass
I now have a guy here on Dakka, Galorn, who is great at mold-making. I too, am thinking in terms of casting. But Vik, you should first make a prototype model before you section it out for casting. It would be very expensive if you designed the thing in sections for casting, and then it didn't work out. You will learn much from the prototype, and your patterns will make reproducing it easier.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
absolutly second your point here... and it was maybe a bit confusing... but it was meant to be exactly the way you described it... first prototype and then the "explosion" and making seperate parts^^
otherwise i think it wouldn´t work at all...
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
Trust me it is best to do a trial run and you will have mistakes and at time you will bang your head repeatedly against a wall but eventually you will succeed and the out come will be great and worth the effort plus search for some casting tips on the net I found a few that really helped and moved things along quickly.
Good luck Viktor and now I am storking you so happy new year and see you very soon Ha HA Hahh ah ah
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
see...that was the master plan...i was secretly trying to drag you...drag you i tell thee...to my own lair...now that i have you in my fist...^^

Viktor I will look forward to your demands for updates and pictures and use them as motivation or at least a nudge lol
As for homes the first one was a pretty good movie considering who directed it and the second I hope to be as good with a bit of luck, have you seen his other films lock stock and snatch thats what it is really like over here lol Automatically Appended Next Post: You want to check out the British tv series of homes it's pretty good the new one I mean

IVAR is nice, but I find the utility of the GORM series to be similar and less expensive. You can do so much with it! Damn Ikea and their cheap fake swedish furniture. More storage is always nice though, especially for hobbies.

now hmelrose...that is a cool link... i will digest that together with my wife... just a short glimpse revealed the laundry monster...what an eyeopener!
i know of gorm.... we first started to use IVAR for our living room... to built two major kick ass big desks to work on and play and what not... my wife had a 0.80x2.20m desk and mine was smaller yet next to identically built inbetween two racks of ivar... then we moved rooms with the kids ...they got the biggest room in the flat...and we baught even more ivar it is now even in the bathroom...as a bench and a rack...there is so much use in this stuff...with gorm i dont like that i have to use the screwdriver if i want to build it... ivar you only need your fingers...(except of course you use those lockers you can buy too... which we have also quite a few of...)

at LDD...yeah the first season was shown twice already on german TV...lovley... that wierd sherlock interpretation was one of my favorite... tho i love the features of peter cushing as one of the best personans of the sherlock charcter it is the new actor in the series and the downey jr...who bring the fictious charcter to a truly new level of a realistic genius...

I cant believe Ikeahackers.net what an amazement truly the fact that people take what is readily available and make a better use out of it, I used to work as a furniture assembler/machinist (I use the term loosely ) in the pine industry over here for a few years glue and pinned as we call it crap.
I would say Ikea even built in its mass production and flat pack form was way better than what we made lol we have had a few bits from there and I have to say they have been moved from home to home a few times and still go back together just as strong.
As for the interpretations of Sherlock homes of which there are 2 at the moment I love both on completely different levels, with the TV version Sherlock's persona of an awkward genius with a total disregard for correct social interaction, however from time to time when his guard is lowered there is almost a human side to him.
When we come to the movie version Sherlocks persona takes on more of the subtle genius but more loveable rouge aspect with a hint of action hero thrown in after all it is the movies, but in all this we should not forget the side kick dear Watson in both cases I feel similarities in there representations on the screen.
Both this time seem to be have given a stronger personalty with a smarter edge plus more of an equal partner ship to the team rather than the bumbling fool as he is often represented as if not to just heighten the deductions of the genius that is Sherlock Holmes.

lol... also i just uplaoded some old style first minis of mine...: because of a nice thread...fist paintjobs and all... so i thought i might rise to the occasion... as for the mancave... well it is no actual mancave at all but a corner of our living room and as such has to up hold some technical laws for maneuverability... otherwise i would not be given the blues but the rock and metal from my wife...it is even with this hardly bearable for her... but space is pretty rare... as for the ikea stuff... mind you i always thought prisonworkers and slaves make the best furniture... us mere free peeps are just not working at that cutting edge... what i am rambling at? try to look up some more recent news to ikea... they even had political inmates work in the former eastern german republic...yeah right... who would have thought... but you are right... we have some second (possibly third) hand stuff form ikea and moved everything from corner to corner in our flat... sometimes me thinks putting wheels under the racks would help^^ so much have we moved inside our rooms the stuff around... as i remeber reading somewhere sherlock was meant to be a gay character... so it is truer to the original concept in the TV series... but i also like the more romantic bond^^ touch you have going on now with downey... and i just love how he calculates his fights beforehand... that is so comic of the 60s^^ in the good old movies watson was mostly just a grunty old fart that was there to have not sherlock look too stupid while rambling around his conclusions... now he is a full player, both on the screen and the telly... which i much more prefer... teamplay is right up my alley... and in the movies there are many scenes in which sherlock wouldn´t have a fleeting chance without his formidable sidekick watson... beside... i think (sorry forgott the actors name, but he will play bilbo beutlin too ) is such a cool guy... in the series... he is such a card... works again as a doc and sleeps due to lack of sleep in his physician rooms... lol... that is what life is all about... you can´t stay a hero 24/7... you sometimes loose or slip... and thats why i love the series and the movies... they create wonderful threedimensional charcters

Love finding old stuff it makes you realise how much you have moved on from when you started but recaptures the interest as to why you fell in love with the hobby in the first place.
Martin freeman (the name that escapes you ) is a pretty good actor seen him in a few things favourite being the office (original version) hilarious I was not shaw of him taken the role of Watson but I think he has made it his own.
As for Sherlock being gay never heard that before but then he was a long term bachelor so I guess it is possible, mind you in the TV shows second series you may be in for a surprise then don't want to spoil it for you but really enjoyed the first episode and holy crap they are now just advertising the second episode as I type.
I was thinking of asking the misses if she feels like seeing Sherlock 2 tonight as I have the day off and I have heard reports of it being worth a watch (I doubt it though ).
I have been looking through my started works and half finished conversion to see if I have enough to start a thread of my own still not sure if it is enough plus the demand for updates can I cope with the pressure.

Damn, that must have been what the Prime Minister was trying to contact me about.
I have to say vik, that man-cave is barely deserving of the title. There's a good couple of square feet of floor visible, there appears to be room for a veritable horde of parts in all those clear spaces on the shelves, and there doesn't seem to be much hanging off those handily placed ladder steps.
Obviously there's a few bonus points to be had for having a half-completed airship on a shelf, so not all bad

well...the prime minister hasn´t had the full information...this mister here has another update up his sleave...
in the spirit of recent weapon creations, and the way earlier expected arrive of the MR TESTOR tube of glue... i tried myself in some blacksmithy endeavor... tho there is hardly any black involved with only rods of white styrene^^
so the credit now goes for inspiration, material and technical support to dave aka dsteingass as he like his new avatar has shown us all the way of self weaponmaking^^
behold...the lawgiver...nono...just a mere peashoter i have to say atm... maybe tomorrow with some further work on the rough stone can a gem be polished out of this...
mind you...the gun now has already seen some more work to it...but since i have just returned fromthe big screen^^ i am not able to go in too much delicate work anymore...
which brings me to the next subject of our late night soiree...namly the movie sherlock holms 2...
the wife criticometer pointed out fair and square an intensification of violence...
me as the advocate of said movie pointed out the fact that said violence always was shown in a very esthetic kind of way...
there were some hilarious points in the movie... like i.e. the automobile in the beginning...but all in all i very much enjoyed the movie... and will be denfinitly be a movie worthwhile to be watched from time to time...
sadly i don´t think i can talk to you in length and depth about the movie... danger of spoilers would be the case^^ the movie is still way too fresh out there still...
but i have to ask the peeps out there that have seen the movie... in one scene watson is wielding a very unknown machinpistol/gun type... with lots of brass and a crescent shaped magazine... anyone has a pic and if possible knows any more about said weapon? i would be most thankfull for any further information... i think a new project is shaping up here...^^
at LDD... martin freeman...yers! i really like that man... many peeps say the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and other movies were pretty lame...but not me... i loved that one to peices and it really cracked me up...even tho i read all books of adams of that storyline...
well if your hint is more on the lines of some bisexual interests... i certainly could say i expect as much of holmes... he is a charcter with way more corners and levels/shaed to him than can be seen by a mere glance...the whole concept of holmes despises sterotypes...and creates a new one^^
at monkey... my wife ust the other minute said.,.. i would like to have a door between you, your man cave and me... she despises the untidyness of all that is there... sad but true...*sniffs*
at fatty... repellant... well my armpits mostly do^^
sadly i don´t know any further information about these nice canons...here was the auction... and sadly no info even there too...
http://www.ebay.de/itm/220903106647?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
at dave... argh... your killing me with your keeper of a wife...if we all has such nice and understanding GF where would we be...oh the productivity we all could achive... i hope you do tell her how special she is!
and what the hell is a skonkwerks....???
cheers, mates...vik

I think this craze is catching on building weapons from scratch, must have a go at a bit my self this weekend (on the quite misses birthday) don't want to upset her on that day of all, How many time have you been to see Sherlock Holmes 2 now ? and I did not get to see it she was tiered but we will be going at the weekend so no spoilers please, i have to say that I do have concerns though as there seems to be some varied and mixed reviews about it.
To defend your wife's criticometer the same point has been highlighted by several film critics as to the amount of violence and explosions and lack of story line.
As for Sherlock season 2 sexual leas on I cant tell you to much as I think it will be part of an on going plot but lets say I can see what you are thinking but you may be surprised, after all like you said he is a charcter with way more corners and levels/shaed to him than can be seen by a mere glance...the whole concept of holmes despises sterotypes...and creates a new one^^ The next episode looks pretty dam good though
As for hitchhikers guide to the galaxy there was a mixed bag of enjoyment and slightly disappointment, however I feel this more so was due to watching the TV show many years ago as a dare I say it as a young adult and enjoyed it amen sly which gave this movie a hard task to match up.
I hate to say it but I am kind of looking forward to seeing the Hobbit now a bit of a wait I know but I think he will make that roll his own.
Vik I am starting to feel some kind of body care is needed your reference to body odour is now worrying Take a shower dude
dsteingass you have to be one of the luckiest men alive not only does she allow you to have creative freedom she sits and watches and even show s interest I bow down to the master teach me the way to achieve this power of mind deception my Sith Lord ….. These are the toys we are looking for

hello mates.... mayn thanks for the praise^^ and comments,
i will honor the "thou- shal-l not- spoil- my- movie" -command of you LDD...
but since this is already a movie wallpaper i think it is possible without any spoilers involved to show which gun i meant:
[img]http://cutthecap.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/sherlock-holmes-2-poster2.jpgimg]
looks like a smaller and eralier brengun, or sten? i am still confused...
yes dave... vickers will be next... i fiddled around the current built and it took me some wild ways^^ changed it now to a complete different design... still not done yet but it definatly now has a heavy component to it...
after some serious filing and carving it now looked like this:
then i thought... way too big for a sawed off shotgun...so i built a stock...
glued and for referrence put in a hand of one of my scotts:
at shaso... was that one for the sponsons or for the backfiring one for the perun? so many moons ago^^ but i have a foggy idea again...
at hazzer... hell yes...and thank you^^ and be sure whatever you do share it with us!
at dave... looked through the link and unfortunatly they only built this site for the teaser/trailer of the movie...so they wouldn´t be able to portray that gun...
by the way... the plasticcard that i got before yours... somehow it seems inpenetrable to the glue... your stuff works like a true charm... i bet i can really put out some madness now... even the revell glue now is my best friend... i think i can now get on with some serious buttkicking building!!! many thanks again dave...
by the way... since your lady adores you while painting and building... it seems she might be abloe to adore you even when you prick your nose? that kind of women seems to be long erased form the face of the earth... got replaced by the more viscious kind... so i think you definatly should breed ... we need more women like her^^ (just joking...and a slight bit of envy nevertheless... )
at LDD... well we just have to wait and see... i know for definite that the german telly will broadcast the show... without adverts by the way as it is government tv for that one...yeah! one for the dvd burner^^
never saw the HHGTG series in TV, was never broadcasted in my lands...i probably have to see it some time in the net then...
as for the lack of storyline... well it sure had suspense aplenty, sometimes abit of roughness that might have been done otherwise and some characters xould have been done a slightly bit more to the coreconcept...but all in all it is already on my favorite movie list... which for me is saying quite much... next time (second then) i watch it in english... got to have the original too...
as for scratchbuilding yer own weaponry... well what are ye waiting for???

Loving the shotgun Vik!
People who are critical of the HHGTTG movie, generally haven't read all of the series, the Movie was really an abridged mix of several of the novels. If you can't be bothered to read all of the books (there are a lot, but they read quickly) I recommend the audiobooks read by Douglas Adams himself (except the first book, read by Stephen Fry)
They are great to listen to if you drive a lot or while painting and modeling.

whoa... what a day... now i had a virus crash after researching for the hun of watson... went to a russian site and got terrible problems... well i hope i am now on top of it... mihgt be needed to change my browser tho...
well dave it isn´t a shotgun anymore... pics will happen later on...to clarify the guntype quite well...
with the books of D.adams... well he has a strange humor... me too... it was a fit.. if you want to have a real strange day read... try the long dark teatime of the soul... strange... very strange...
audiobooks... well i never tred them yet...hmmm...but i totally se your point with the hobbyrelated absence of the need to hear something for modeling to take place...thus an audiobook sure has it´s benefits...
thanks hazzer^^

Vik shotguns hey have to say I cheated and bought a load from Maxmini they were to good to pass up, But I did convert some empire muskets to shot gun once I know not quite up there with you scratch building lot
I even cheated on my bloopers for my renegade/bloodpact I asked a friend over on work in progress if he could nock some up using CAD and have to say they turned out looking great just have to wait for them to arrive now.
As for the show I am sure if they have shown the first season they will show the second, HGTG was around in the eighties low budget british production but bloody funny from what I can remember got to stay up to watch it as a kid.
Due to the feedback of the Movie I take most with a pinch of salt plus if you expect the worst I usually enjoy it more go figure.
I do apologise if my feedback is a bit crap but it reflects the evening I had at work yes crap…………….. At least its Friday tomorrow

I had been looking at the Empire rifle/muskets as a possible solution to my shotgun problem, simply cutting them in half or by 75% then drilling out the barrel with a pin vise & bit.
I was going to take the rest of the models and give them lasguns, that would make them empire fancy conscripts/regular troops in an IG force, just something a little different on the battlefield. Similar to what the store owner at Aero Hobbies in Santa Monica, Ca did with his IG force and he named every model after a customer or friend. I'm happy to say that I'm a Veteran member of his IG force!

There is no cheating in modeling only awesome tips/tricks! If the model gets done right the way you want it to look, then you have achieved your goal!
Oh yeah, plenty of options with all the models from the GW line of miniatures and other companies. The Pistoliers are a good example of this variety.

@Hmelrose They look great nice work and I like the fact you named each one after a member of the group mind you how many are there in that group thats a lot of minis I wish I had a mini named after me as for the Empire musket conversion I only used the arms and musket added it a catachan torso with a militia head and catachan legs to make a zombie hunter, with a little GS.
The reason I said I cheated was I saw the look some where else and loved it so much that I practically copied the entire miniature, although mine had a better jacket collar LOL
@Viktor von Doom Sorry I saw them and nearly wet my self (how sad I know) but I have been waiting for something like this for so long and have tried to push the idea their for ages and finally (all be it after christmas when i am skint no overtime and the misses birthday is here) they made them
and as you all seem to be guard players of sort thought you might like them. Those shotguns are good
Glad you are getting the second season it's getting better and it was pretty good to start with we have no adverts in our series either as it is the channel we pay the licence to .
I think we will be going to see this weekend sunday probably, will let you know my verdict, your link for the gun does not seem to work for me I don't know if any one else has had that problem

It's a model from Tobsen77 makes a few resin models some great some ok I have 3 of these started to convert one for some renegade rough riders but surprise surprise never finished HA……….
I like this use for it although it does kind of remind me of the version on the Tobsen site in away which is great but you need parts from Copplestone miniatures to achieve it.
I would sculpt your own legs myself as the bend in the legs looks a bit odd for the seating position or add more of a seat so it looks as though he is sitting on it.

I agree with the seat thing, this was my first assemble kind of like a test to see how it would look, the gap definately needs filling, now where is my GS... True it does look similar, I originally purchased some to convert into Hellhounds for my Squat army....and then I saw how small they were in reality so I decided not to. They also somewhat remind me of the Cobra tank thing.

steam punk fashion a melta gun

those are the guns that are difficult to find in a steam punk like fashion or that are just really expensive.

I love the look of the Las-Lock, but it makes no sense to me, How the hell does a flintlock system work like a lasgun? I could dream up a bolt-action weapon of some sort, but how to 40k-ify it? Add the iconic flash supressor and then what?
I've made a standard lasrifle into a long-las sniper rifle already, let me dig it up and take a pic....
Not much, very simple conversion.

love thr RR jeroen! tho i have to admit, that the sitting legs look a tad akward in that position...tho i am not the one about to complain here^^ gift horse and all^^
also i think he needs a means to stear the wheel ...some joystick or stearingwhell...
but the whole arrangement screams classy already^^
at dave... 5 much needed weapons...hmmm...steampunk of course...
i have to give that to fatty´s top five... they all sound very good choices... but what about the design? the need...i would totally agree...but do some of you have ideas how to make them? some screenshots of games or internet finds?
by the way...i am working currently on a doublebarreld shotgun... glue is curing atm for the stock to really set then the carving will happen ...pics will follow later on...

not been on much yet again, but I still have a shotgun I made as a test for vik back at something like page 10 and never actually took a pic with it
It's a pretty simple conversion, just a bolter minus the sights and clip, added a drum mag to the side and the barrel was replaced by two smaller ones. Next pic update I'll take one of it (if I can find it)

Not everything on the weapon needs to have a purpose it could just be for visual design, the sniper rifle looks pretty good though.

well there have been solid rounds mentioned in 40k fluff, so the gun could simply fire solid ammo.

Post by: dsteingass
Ok, so let's explore this idea. Steampunk...What is it?
or more importantly, what aesthetic characteristics make things instantly recognizable as "Steampunk"?
IMHO...
Hard things
1. Victorian era materials and styling (brass, gold, iron, finished wood, RIVETS)
2. Coils, valves, analog gagues, gears, cogs, and other mechanical or pneumatic things, ray guns, tesla coils, etc.
And soft things
3. Ornate filigree, gildings, inlaid pearl and ornamental hardware usually framing fine woodwork.
4. Never bright in color, but colorful fabrics, clothes, silks, carpets, and red velvet cushions
It is always the mix of the hard and soft things in Steampunk that make me dig it. But I think what really makes Steampunk are the makers. The craftsmanship and style is a reflection of the person who crafted, by hand, their creation.

True, but then why not use one of the zillions of already-available bolt-actions already available in 28mm?
I think there needs to be a need first. Automatically Appended Next Post: These pics are from the book "The Steampunk Bible" - by Jeff Vandermeer- A great book I picked up at GenCon
THe book gives ONE formula for Steampunk:
STEAMPUNK = Mad Scientist Inventor [invention (steam x airship or metal man / baroque stylings) x (pseudo) Victorian setting] + progressive or reactionary politics x adventure plot

at jeroen... lol...and me, i thought the pith helemt was for the better cooling of the head and giving also some sort of minimum protection...silly me...
at shrike... would love to see that shotgunny version of yours... always my weapon of choice... a nice (little if needed) shotgun...pumgun for preferrence by the way but double barreld for the classic look... by the way... look downwards...
at LDD... Not everything on the weapon needs to have a purpose it could just be for visual design, the sniper rifle looks pretty good though.
lol...sounds like a reasonable try to come up with a new wording for the rule of cool...^^
at dave... nice book show of yours... that book seems to be full of nice things...
and the summary of all that is steampunk sounds pretty sound to me...the charm of steampunk is exactly your short list of things... the true essence...the materials we nowadays don´t see too often and the individuality we seldom see...i-pod looks like any i-pod... it is trusty but it is just a template product... without any soul... i prefer soul any day of my life over standard template products...
as for the shotgun remark of mine..:
double barreld shotgun... some work still on the barrels...and also i would like to do hammers on the thingy...(dunno how it is called...) and maybe some carving on the wood... i am considering to GS certain areas too...

on topic, the rivet holes look pretty good, and I think the way to stop the material getting deformed is to drill less holes in it (more material needed though)
so instead of, say, 20 holes in a strip, maybe 15, evenly spread out?
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the first pic is just wasted material, when making rivets for the rivtes as the sole purpose it is rather not really important what becomes out of the left over... but since i used to do detailwork with the punch too i have to now see how to make it work for me... one thing i will try is getting thinner sheats of PC...that might be the trick...
28415

Come on Vik there is no such thing as wasted PC, that distorted PC is perfect for scratch building scenery or even better for ork scratch builds never repeat never throw anything away

Elegant yet kicks a punch however you need to get to where you are going to use it first
Hey presto
48594
Post by: dsteingass
@Vik- you will probably ruin/dull your holepunch by forcing it through the 1mm plastic card, you really want something thinner. How about the thin clear plastic that is used for report covers, or overhead transparencies, etc. ? Or food packaging plastic (if it will take a glue)
@LDD The Barrel/canister/round magazine is another touch that fits in perfectly with Steampunk! The Piston-drive system is another cool idea to make anything instantly look steampunk, although I'd prefer iron steam tractor wheels

as for the tank and the other vehicles... some i know of already... at least once in a week i do a pic search at google for steampunk vehicles, mechs, walker and tank... to come up with new designs... got already quite a collection...
at rawson...classy mate^^ but honestly... i thought that was dave´s necro thread as well or even more^^
at RW... yep i read it... though...earning money...was that ever a ssuitable excuse? thought so^^
as for the wasting PC issue... of course do i collect and recycle all previously used PC to a later terminal use...basing or any other uses... there is no wasted PC...it was just a figure of speach to a short sighted projects pinpoint...^^
well mates... made an effort and tried myself with simple forms... tried to make a bricklicke compartment for my next project...but i realised i don´t do simple...so the current steps are put aside (not wasted...just on the shelf for future use )
and began working on a more octagonal shape...this looks way better... but did atm no pics to let you oggle over... that will have to wait for a further step to follow...i have great expectations for this now...somehow the thing feels already right... the whole project is yet again just a thing that i build as i go with the flow... no planning just moment inspiration...so bear with me on this...

I have never understood that expression "____has too much time on his/her hands"- What does that mean? Why do people say that?
It is an amazingly hand-crafted piece of art, the artist obviously set out to plan/build/create the thing with great skill and craftsmanship, it was not an accidental product of boredom
I often hear that said in a disapproving tone about my own work, as if the person saying it thinks that they know better than I do how I should be spending my free time.

nice discussion i seem to have droped in on...
well germany sure has it´s faire share of americanisms in the language now.. as well from other "minoritiy" influences as well... some assimilate the new stuff with open arms and some...my father-in law springs to my mind...refuses to even pronounce those lend words in the correct way... so we have to hear english stuff with a sooo harsh german accent that sometimes i have to cringe...it is rather an earstrain...
by the way... hazzer...basically steampunk is what you summed up:
i think this explains a certain take to the scene... for all that have started to have a more in-depth aproach to the matter... it is like a renaissance of old meets new... new thech inn the shape and spirit of old classy materials and craftmanship...comfrort andstyle goes before function and economic concerns... also no one bothers about ecology...polution is not thought about... steampunk is more of a social point of view...some kind of way of life...and for my part...i wish sometimes it too hard to be true...all that damend plastic...i just have to look through the window...damn those are 50% plastic too...see?
sorry for the ramble^^
as for the second past time in this little thread...made some progress on the new project...it will be my interpretation of a steampunk walker... yeah...for me that just screams to be done in steampunk! so i am atm working on the compartment of the vehicle... fully encased one at that... the pics below show the shape quite good, also i hope if you are inclined to do so...when zoomed in you will see that i began to texturize the surface in a wooden fashion... i hope it is recognizable...please be as cruel as you see fit...^^
also one might notice the grey now crawling up on this structure...these recycled lenghts of sprue i have choosen for their shape...they will be later on recognizable as a steelcage around the wooden base...i have a kind of tiefighter look for the compartment in mind...
the window will have that look ...
so here are the updates...
pleae share everything you deem fit to be shared here^^ as usual^^
your humble servant, vik

Wow, so much stuff going on in this thread! And Dave's too! I just wanted to say all of those guns and vehicles look cool. I have a real gun at home that is pretty wild. It's a Drilling. (from the German number 3), and has 2, 12 guage barrels over a 30.06 rifle barrel. I need should make one of those for 28mm scale!
I like that shotgun with the round mag though. wild!
And those super tall vehicles would most likely have some sort of steam powered thrusters on the higher decks for stabilization, right? If not, build them that way!

British English is still the language of bards, and hence why british blokes get so much action here in the states. Hard enough with American competitors to score a hot bird, but then you chaps from England come across the bloody pond to make it with our birds. WTF?

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.
Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace's Analytical engine.
Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

I am really curious about the walker. What size is that piece? it is the main body of the walker? Only the sprues can allow us to figure out the scale of the piece shown.
If it is the main body piece, or the cockpit, wouldn't it be great to have a hatch, or some kind of pressurized door like those found on submarines?
I really like the way the texture is going, but I usually do it in two steps: First, I mark the likes among the wodden planks that create that surface. That helps to get the scale of the model, since we all expect planks to be of a certain size. I usually make planks of about 0.5 per 3-4 cm.
Then, I fill the planks with the irregular cuts, one plank at a time.
I am really interested about how this steampunk creature will turn out. Will it be a walker? will it be titan-sized? with Vik, who knows?

at shaso... isn´t that what everybody is capable of? i always assumed that much... it is the same here in germany too.. so many dialects been thrown at you in berlin...when you come into the specific area where said dialect is cultivated you adopt pretty fast to it in order to belong to the crowd...it is a society thing...blend in or get shut out...
at jake...thrusters...hmm...we will see if that is needed...but that now it is pointed out it will somehow slightly change the game...
and i would love to see a real pic of that gun... sounds like a friendly tool to have^^
at LDD...hmm...will have a look at their range again...last time i checked it was way backa year ago... so i need a refreshing look there... as for keeping up with all those updates...yeah it really turns out to look a bit like wading through work^^

and everywhere...
corrected that for you a bit^^
at RW... armageddon is upon ye wether you want it or not...it is just a matter of when not if^^
at jeroen...yep...tho i know the definitions from all those bright lads at wiki...i think the theme steampunk is something that works even better if you make up your own definition as you go along and develop thus a new kind of the overall theme...thus diversification happens...and that is always what makes a thing live longer!
at 2500kgm3 :
that piece as you see it now is the cocküpit sort of...without any bitz for the engine or anything lese really...the windowsection will follow shortly...these will be angled windowpanes that form a domelike section right in fron of the current piece ...thus making the piece even more diamond looking... the wooden boards are meant to be atm in between the metal grids one piece each...held together by the grid and of course the cement of steampunk...rivets^^
any further details will happen one at a time...of course you are right... a hatch is deeply needed...i speculate atm wether it will be a top one or a side one... so much needs to be figured out for that... could even be a underslung one and access via it by a ropeladder...or steps on the legs...
the size i aim for is a bit more massed than a sentinel...mainly due to the need for engines and such detaiuls to cover the steampunk aproach... i will shortly also make a scalle shot to show how big the current buil is and how to speculate about height issues... i really would like to hear all your thoughts about length of legs and such things... if someone has any clever ideas as to how to create a part for attaching the legs i am all open ears...that is currently an issue i am still trying to figure out...
more updates in the CET night time...

Seems you have a plan for this as well……… have you got a shot of the legs next to the cockpit with a mini for scale and size purpose it will help to give an idea on the height ratio. I'm not sure what you have in mind for actuators and mechanical bits Vik, it would help us to provide suggestions if we had a sketch or something to go on. What is in that head of yours?
Assuming you want the legs to be motivated by hydraulics and such (not mysteriously enclosed in the leg like the AT- ST) to maintain the steampunk look, I would suggest that you extend the joints a bit to allow places to connect your actuators and hydraulics or what-not.
My sketch would not actually work, I didnt put much thought into it mechanically, but you get the idea- you really need to have a plan on how the thing moves before you can commit to any glue methinks.
As for gears, this guy makes paper steampunk walkers http://phillipvaldez.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
It looks as if he prints them, then cuts out the printed areas- you could do the same thing, except you would need to make your template from paper, then trace the template onto the plasticard for the big gears
And you know I can't condone the blasphemy of using Lego parts, but I would suggest you "explore the functionality of" this technic part
36940
Post by: Anvildude
Better for Steampunk would be to have the pistons 'bridging the gap' as it were, instead of so flush with the leg. First off, it increases the mechanical advantage the piston has, meaning it requires less energy to move the leg, and second, well, it just looks more steampunk.

48594
Post by: dsteingass
Is this sort of what you mean Anvil?
At first glance, this seems like it would limit movement some, due to the rigid pistons, almost as if you need to first decide how far the limb's range of motion is, and then find a placement for the piston that allows it at the maximum extension and the minimum extension.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
That is what I meant. Unless Dakka's got an in-browser sketch system somewhere that I don't know about, I'm not that fast with the sketchings.
Thing is, it would actually not limit range of motion as much as the close to leg system would, simply because you can always have a different bracket system letting you possibly even hyperextend the joint.

wow mates... that is quite helpful... i really like, love even this sitting together and really thinking about such a modeling problem!
both, anvil and dave are onto something good here...personally i can see both ways to be used...heck the inner (left piston) of dave ´s first sketch is just the longer version of the "anvildudes" design... i think a mixture of both ...would that be a solution...i am really getting wet hands when i see that stuff...mates many thanks...
oh and while we are at it... how would you solve the leg to body problem? this is a major issue atm with me too...
oh and dave...i know already valdez stuff... he is a genius...isn´t he? everybody that dabbles in steampunk i think will at one point stumble over his walker!
i do by the way own the pistons from lego, but there is literally no way i would steal those from my kids... we only have about three or four...and one day they will need them, so they are safe and will stay that way^^ promise!

Hmm.The steam boiler would have to drive a shaft or steam piston. If it is a shaft, then the shaft would have to have a series of gears that allowed the legs to sort of "pivot at the hips" But in order to engage one leg at a time to actually walk, there would need to be some sort of gearbox or transmission that allowed each leg to move independently.
OR, you could just make a cool-looking mess of gears and pretend it really works
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
OR, you could just make a cool-looking mess of gears and pretend it really works lol...
but i do like your first idea more...so more an underslung boiler and the means for transmision under the cockpit than my first idea to have it behind the cockpit...hmm...i think i like that...
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
How a bout a sliding piston on the leg, buy this I mean the piston on the top of the leg is in a fixed position but where the lower leg is attached to the drive piston it is fixed to a sliding plate on the leg allowing more movement if that makes sense.
As for the independent leg movement could you not have two small independent boilers for each leg or am I just being stupid
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Hmmm, you could, but the idea is that the boiler creates your fuel supply and compresses it, the steam. Then to harness the energy in the steam, you have a piston engine. There is nothing stopping you from making a single boiler, but have two independant engines both sharing the same steam supply though, like LDD said
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
hmmm... since the boiler has to be fired...i doubt two would be advisable...beside... we all do know that boilers are a heck of a unsatifing means to power something up... for such a massive object a boiler must be at least the size of the cockpit, if not bigger...
two smaller ones... i can´t see that happening...if you want...make a mockuo pic and proove me wrong^^
as for the first suggestion...i can´t picture that...for lack of technoligical understanding...when something gets to tech complicated i am out of my depths language wise^^ Automatically Appended Next Post: thanks dave... as written above...thought the same^^
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Well, this is steampunk, you can't use integrated circuits, but you can imagine that they have developed some new way of compressing the steam, and using smaller boilers than were common in our own history You have some room to fluff it here and there, it is fiction after all
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
of course there might be a fluffy solution...but in my guts the whole walker issue is using a fluffy solution as to how on earth could such a device be energy efficient already up... i think i have to make the build convincing...having two power "cells" like LDD sugested would bring me in a state to not believe in my model anymore...

Post by: lone dirty dog
Hey I am just chucking some ideas out there I did not say I knew what I what I was doing lol
As for the 2 smaller boilers was more for the independent power supply which as you both have pointed out would be rather useless on several counts (but might have looked good) point taken.
However the first part of my suggestion was as in the second picture where the piston is between the leg sections , the bottom of the piston is fixed to a plate on the leg that can slide up and down the lower section of the leg increasing the movability of the leg.
I will see if i can draw something to explain but it will have to be tomorrow as I can barely keep my eyes open at the moment I am nackered
Just read some of your post that has happened as I was writing slowly but there is a way of increasing steam power by reducing the area around it which it has to travel using smaller piping as it builds therefor increasing its force therefore increasing power and energy out put I think.
I saw something on the discovery channel about it its to do with build up of power by forcing it in ever decreasing space by doing this it increases it power levels

Well, there's 3 drive systems that are really 'steampunk'-y. The first is piston drive, using tubing to go from the boiler, into a distribution manifold, into the proper pistons. This would be the most powerful, and the most versatile, but would require miniscule detailing, and might not provide many opportunities for making it look cool.
The second is gearing- this is clunky and heavy, but looks cool- a good way to do alternating legs would be a partial or 'cut' gear for the primary drive, so each leg only gets power for part of the rotation.
The third is Belt drive, which is similar to the gears, but using belts for long-distance power transference, and friction drives for power distribution.

at LDD... i can follow you now...this last point you describe is exactly how steam power works...and how i want to use it for this built...hopefully i am able to...
at anvildude... the cut gear idea...that is pretty cool...hmmm...but the pistons for me are the foremost way to portray the steampower idea...tho i really like your ideas...beltdriven methode sounds nice but i suspect highly complicated for modeling...if it was only for a lego constrction i would probably use that one...
