I can't raise the table height or I'll lose my overhead storage space. I just need to sit up straight and pick up my model up to eye level instead of crouching down like a Predator waiting to pounce. I do it when I'm reading too , and now while typing on the ipad I just need to take etiquette classes where they tie your head to the back of a tall chair to teach you to sit up right.
What I used to do was have a small table on the workbench. Granted the tablelegs were 3" high, but it was enough that I wasn't hunched over when I worked. You could try something like that.
But here's the dealio, why get it for that price when I can go to lowes or depot and get them to match it plus 10%. That's right $180.00 worth of shelving from lowes for $72 ish dollars. They can be assembled half height or together to make a long wall of shelving, or like I have planned I'm going to make a table base out of the three sets and some shelves. The table base will wind up 27" tall, 70"long and 39" wide if I have it figured correctly. Or I could make it easier and go 36" wide by 64" still 27" tall. That second load out will make the shelves more accessible. After which I think a new top of 3'x6' mdf will be screwed down to it, then my KOW table top can be laid on top for bigger games but the 3x6 is just fine for necromunda and other games.
Got to work an hour and a half early, going to start earning some money to help pay off more purchases.
Anybody got any experience with the "silent" airbrush compressors, I was thinking if one of those instead of a larger one to replace my busted one.
Theophony wrote: I just need to take etiquette classes where they tie your head to the back of a tall chair to teach you to sit up right.
*Picture of an electric chair*
I don't think that they are trying to teach that man good posture... You may want to shop around before approaching them...
@hk1x1, I think dsteingass was where I say it being used first, all credit should go to him.
@dr. H, seriously??? Here I thought the current made you shoot straight up and the straps were there to help you to learn where to stop. I think your wrong, next you'll be telling me the guys wearing sheets aren't promoting a bedding sale
4hours into my day, and I have repaired 8 vacuums. Hopeful this will save the hospital some money as they are all hepa filter vacuums that retail for around $300.00 each. Now if I can just teach everyone that they are not wet/dry vacuums I think they will last a long time. Also fixed one of our commercial walk behind vacuums. It's 2' wide battery powered and self propelled. I'm not a mechanic, but knowing I can unplug it before taking it apart makes me feel so much better about attempting repairs.
Oldest kid is home today, she's had a nagging cough since Christmas, three doctors visits, different medicine each time, hopefully third times the charm. Wife clogged up the kitchen sink last night while I was at work, just spent an hour digging broccoli out of the drain line, now I smell of old broccoli, and not in the carnival worker way.
So now onto the gaming table.
Say goodbye to the old table
The new table is the shelves in the boxes leaning against them, they look like less cluttered versions of this when assembled.
Hopefully progress before I go to work, no overtime today since kid 1 is home sick. Unless I stay overnight, wonder when the overnight differential kicks in . That might be interesting to get overtime with overnight differential thrown into the mix for added $$$$
Wow slow day , or I have just annoyed everyone away .
I left for work yesterday and kid1 was at home with my wife waiting for the other 2to get home. Couple hours into my shift I checked my phone(always on silent and I can't feel it vibrate) to see 2 missed calls and 4messages from my wife in 2 hours. "Oh " never good with that much attempted contact in such a short time. My daughter got worse with her cough(had it since Christmas in various levels of hacking), and my wife called the nurse ho said take her to the children's hospital emergency room "NOW!" Needless to say I left work, about threw my phone out the window because it was being stupid and couldn't pull up the phone number for that hospital and my wife was not answering(no signal inside the e.r.). They got my daughter straightened out on new medicine (fourth times the charm), and did chest x-rays to check the lungs which are perfectly fine. After an hour she was to be getting discharged so the wife sent me home with the twins so they could get a good night sleep. On my way home kid1 had a Reaction to the medicine she was given, but was stabilized within a minute by the staff. Just too much medicine and too many breathing treatments in too short of a time yesterday. She's staying home today with my wife (first time my wife has taken a sick day in I think 8-9years except when she had emergency gallbladder taken out, everything else has fallen n her spring breaks or Christmas vacations). So here's hoping we find a happy solution to Sarah's coughing which they said should be better by this weekend (Saturday is her 11th birthday).
On to fun stuff now for your viewing pleasure(hopefully)
The new racks got assembled yesterday. Here's what I had planned, although som changes were made because the rack legs were different than the old set that I had. The old set had he legs separate at 27", the new racks have 36" and 18". So instead of the table being 27" off the ground it's 36" up, which is a nice height for me standing, and mark is pretty tall as well so I think it will work out better.
The top shelves are right here the table top is so nothing will sit on them, I might change that though. But this gives lots of underneath shelving space to store stuff. I have two more shelves, but have a cunning plan for them if all works out correctly. One of the two was bent though, so I have to take it back before I can see for sure.
Here's the table with top added on, I think it looks great. Now to find some nice storage boxed/bins for underneath on the racks.
Left over parts? Well half of those will be used with the other two shelves, so no worries there and I didn't like the look of the spacers so they didn't get put on the shelves.
Got two more bar magnets for he other side of the desk. They have a 9+pound pull(4kg) so the hammer I held tightly. I should have gotten another bar magnet to go on the wall next to my table to hold gaming tape measures as they always get lost in the terrain .
Well time to get the twins up for school, talk at you guys later.
Freakin' kids, always getting ill or something. Hope she's properly mended for the weekend. Good to see hobby project is going well too. Sitting here in my cupboard, I am ridiculously jealous!
Damn, I hope your daughter will get better for real soon! That is quite a long time in half illness...that alone is enough to worry about...have they done some blood checkups with her? Might not be the lungs but something is weird here...ill cross my fingers for her.
I was today in q weird sense of the word funny also at the e.r. with my oldest Felix. They called me from my work at school because a pair of scissors ruined his left index finger...all on the mend. Plus a day off from school for the two of us is nothing to sneeze at
And my youngest is now on a four day trip. His first home away time at all...I am on my toes...argh...
The table setup looks great. Storage looks plentiful to say the least. Lots of space for cool terrain to replace and choose...and...for even thinking multi storay terrain... My only issue would be, do you play standing upright or sitting? If the latter, where to put your feet? But the height I think makes it possible for to play at standing...especially for a tall guy like you. We've raised our kitchen furniture to cope our heights (my wife and me are both well over 1.80m...) And it is no joy to work in the kitchen that gas been built for smaller peeps...
@graven, smelly kids always ruining the day , it better pay off in the end when I'm old and gray and they have to take care of me @Vik, poor Felix, but better a finger gets the scissors than an eye.
Well the twins are off to school. Sarah has had here medicine for the morning and no jitters, so I have headed to the basement for some modeling. First off I grabbed the unused/un bent shelf and some of the short sections of legs and built a small bench for under my work table. The benches were planned from the get go, but the change in height was unexpected, but actually has worked out for the better . The bench leaves about 8" above it to rest trays of stuff on top and still have space underneath them (18" high, 14" deep and 36" long for totes and such. They can be pulled out to rest larger things on as well.
One will be used to keep things like my chopper2, duplicutter2, and straight edge cutter on and within easy grasp of the workbench. Currently all those are sitting on top of the shelf above the workbench, and are kind of precariously stacked.
Hopefully I can get some things primed this morning as there is no rain happening currently. Then maybe, just maybe I can get back into the groove. Although my modeling shelves are calling for some love and maintenance.
Well the doctors say "we don't declare asthma anymore " because that causes problems with unscrupulous insurance companies and pre existing condition clauses. They just call it "an event" and prescribe the same medicines and give you the same "don't go near harsh chemicals, Bon fires, stay away from pets stop smoking or hanging around smokers and avoid outside activity a this time of year du to high allergens."
Went to lunch with the wife and kid1, hey are both taking tomorrow off school and going to see a lung specialist to ensure its nothing else. I'm going to prime some figs, shower and head into work.
your wife and you are not coughing too, aren't you? could be fungi in your house (this is a far away idea...saw that and what I caused in peeps...) so no stepping on your toes here...
and I think the breaking point of your legal system and your health system has to be soon... sheesh... you live in a nightmare...
Best wishes and hope everyone getting better soon. Stressful day, effects us badly too doesn't it. She will be fine for the weekend, or I will swim over and sort you all oooot!
Table loking good, and great idea, storage is the key to a happy life me thinks.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes . I'm sure she'll be fine and running crazy this weekend. She's the only one with the cough, we just have our allergy headaches and I keep an eye out for mold in the house so it's not that. The girls have hardwood flooring in their bedrooms and in the dining area. We have tile in all bathrooms and kitchen only the family room, hallways and our bedrooms have carpet. The plan is to rip the carpet out of the family room next year and redo all the hardwood floors with tax money next year. We use the better quality filters in the air conditioner so it's not that either.
Primed the orcs that I had I. My knights orks and goons drawer before I left for work. The cavalry guys got a brown primer which is almost good enough to call the pigs done, the foot guys got a white primer though I think they might get brown on the next batch. No pics as just primer and I want to paint up a couple to get feedback from you lot before I decide on army colors.
1. Whatever you do DO NOT get the Menards Red magnetic strips. the magnets suck, and heavier tools can fall off. I need to replace mine, as even two will barely hold my jeweler's saw with the big wooden handle. If you have one that can hold a framing hammer, it'll hold any other hobby tool.
2. YES ...while not totaly SILENT, The compressor I got for my airbrush is very very quiet. you DO NOT want an air compressor designed for high pressure nailers and other jobsite tools. A proper airbrush compressor gives you finer control of your pressure, which is the point. you will quickly become frustrated at your jobsite grade compressor's ability to jump 10 PSI for every little bit you nudge the regulator dial. Trust me, THIS is worth the money. There is a BIG difference between 15PSI and 20PSI when airbrushing. And it helps that it won't wake the wife, kids, and pets every time it kicks on. You want one with a tank, not the little diaphragm compressors that cause a pulse every time it kicks on.
http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-Co-TC910-Compressor/dp/B005UH7CVI
3. Asthma and allergies are NOT the same thing, yet every form doctors give you have a check box for Asthma/Hay fever. Stupid!
Hell yeah! Great Deal man! Just remember, the regulator is a push-turn thing. Don't be like me the first time and unscrew the whole regulator- the spring is tricky to get back in
Wife just called, daughter has been seen by specialist, she has trained her body to cough instead of swallow , so she's perfectly fine, Thank God, just nutty as a fruitbat. Instead of coughing she needs to take a drink of water to retrain herself. It's a common habit developed after a cold with kids her age. I guess I was right telling her to get a drink of water and try that instead of the hacking before, but why listen to daddy .
Starting work now, thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes, I'm sure they helped .
I recently had myself the same thing...after a certain amount of time with a cold the coughing gets self sustaining...I got rid of it after almost two months with menthol sweets , and lots of drinking...and mind you, grown ups are as "dumb" as kids in that regard...
Editrdered , free shipping, no tax and was the best price I found currently.
Theophony, that is the same compressor I have and I like it a lot!
However, I have a simple suggestion- remove the outer aluminum carry case, as it does nothing and makes the on/off switch Very hard to access. I also would recommend putting a fan to blow on it to keep it cool (Ouze suggested this to me, and it works great). Finally, I put a piece of cloth through the key ring that is on the side. This generates an amazing amount of "ringing" noise if it is allowed to rattle loose... just a little cloth stuck through the key ring muffles it / keeps it from pinging, and really helps keep the volume level manageable.
With those tweaks, I've been extremely pleased! I did have the switch stop working but Badger promptly replaced the part for free and got me airbrushing again
Your desk also looks fabulous, well done! Now to get to modelling work using it
UPS update, this will arrive today , guess I might get to try it out later tonight or at least n the morning.
Thanks for the advice on the noise reduction guys . The screwdriver is within reach to pop the top off of it and I will look into something to pad the feet(anyone know somebody with tons of foam just sitting around .
On stupid note, one if my lovely kids left the door to our upright freezer open yesterday. I'll be painting with the door to the basement open. Lots of stuff got thrown out late last night. Also caught up on missing hours from leaving work on Monday. Thought about grabbing overtime tonight and tomorrow, but the compressor might just chance that plan.
Edit:Holy Gak Batman.....it's here less than 23hours after ordering it Straight out of the box
And thanks to RITides suggestions I ripped the skirt right off of her ...... I mean......never mind .
And what better way to appease the painting gods than to sacrifice a few plastic mantic orcs.
I mixed the paint wrong , still not used to thinning paint, but I will have practice later. First I must do homework and study for exam tonight. Later I can practice and study compressor and airbrush.
I might take the suction up feet off the compressor, drill some holes and mount it directly to the desk, not sure though. It is much quieter than I thought an my kids will be able to sleep through me using it. On a side note this just made me forget about going in for overtime tonight .
I'm not sure why you'd want to take the casing off, mine doesn't run very often at all, and when it does, only for a short time.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Do you just take it off to get to the switch? My switch has been on since I got mine. You said something about heat? Mine is on the floor below my painting bench. I also have the 10 foot hose.
@shaso, I've had the airbrush, a gift from dsteingass a ways back. But my compressor was a small commercial one that never worked right.
@dsteingass, I took the cover off as suggested by RITides, I made sense originally, but I think my fat fingers can fit in to the off switch, so it might go back on.
Terrible night at school, test was nothing I was prepared for, neither was my one else. But my last test was great, so here's hoping the curve will be generous. Spent a little family Time when I got home, now the kids are asleep, just trying to think if I wan to tackle the brush tonight o sleep .
Put it on one of those anti-fatigue mats the DIY stores sell. They do a nice job of keeping a compressor quiet.
Also try a great thinner called Paint Easy from the DIY store. It is meant for thinning housepaint so you can shoot it through an HVLP sprayer, but it works fine for any acrylic paint. And it is cheap.
Please don't use Windex as a thinner.
Finally, for a homebrew extractor, use a 20" box fan and place a 20"x20"x1" HEPA filter against the intake side, and set it in front of the airbrushing station. It'll suck the air, and paint particles into the HEPA filter. Works like a charm.
it, I'm going to buy airbrush paint. Tried working with what I had, four tries, four disasters. At least hey were only mantic orcs . Off to get the bent shelf replaced then to work. Might get a little overtime tonight, just depends on how things go.
Clogged, but easily cleaned out each time. Some of my paints are just thick. I tried to dilute them enough, but hasn't worked out. Still running fine, just not getting the consistency I want. Also I must locate my other needles, I think I have the finest tip on it right now which might be a problem.
dsteingass wrote: No, not Windex as a thinner, just Windex as an in-between cleaner.
Soap and water, like liquid dish soap, followed by a thorough rinse through, are the best in-between cleaner for acrylics, and are much cheaper than windex. Never causes the paint to get 'gummy'. Plus no residue problems. But there are knuckleheads out there who use Windex as a thinner. One would hope that people would take a few minutes to learn a bit about the chemical and physical properties of the medium in which they are working.
Anyway, Theo, which airbrush paints are you looking to try? I was wondering how well the new Badger paints would do. I know the Vallejo stuff is pretty good.
Well I was told at the flgs that Vallejo is redoing their airbrush line and won't be available till October/September. I'll swing by hobby lobby this weekend or possibly miniature market and see what is available at those places. I've decided not to be brand loyal anymore, last brand I supported really well turned from being a great miniature company into the company that brought us the taurox .
The orcs will get painted eventually, but I'm having a hankering for marines again, or at least servo skulls pretending to be marines . Also I must revisit the "when servo skulls attack" stories again.
Edit got home and quickly grew some paint on a gore(Orc pig in mantic universe)
Ham and eggs go good together so why not , just blocked in quickly, I'll see what I think in the morning.
I'm thinking yellow for my army color as the brother in law took red for his undead.
Well Saturday was a full celebration of my oldest s 11th birthday, multiple family get togethers, lunch and dinner out, time at the park to play yadda yadda. Not painting or paint shopping really, did look at an art store, their airbrush paints seamed expensive, but at 4 times the volume of GW and 5 times the price it might be reasonable. It was called Golden airbrush paint, and seams to be the artist choice. Might revisit it later. Hobby lobby had some basic airbrush paint too, but nothing that jumped out at me. Sunday was church and more family time. My weekend off, so most is taken up by family as they don't see me during the week.
My first look at the pig on Saturday made me think it was. Possible to "fix" it, I like the idea of yellow, but the colors were not working for me. Hence I busted out the delvan miracle mud . And finished the rider this morning. Here's version 1.0, give me the honest opinion. Nothing too fancy with him as I have 50 of them to paint up . And 200-300 foot troops to do as well.
I'll redo a foot trooper now in similar fashion to see how that turns out.
Didn't think of varying the gore color . Guess I was lazy about that, maybe all the not brown ones get eaten as the brown ones go fasta in mantic land (mantica , stupid name).
so in the meantime
first of the foot troops done. there may be some slight changes in the future, but I think this will work as a basis to work off of.
I tried metal and black visors on him, I'm leaning towards the black though
yellow seems to be the favourite colour choice of yours... bold but striking!...and looking very good... tho I have to say...colours look a tad flat to me... drybrushing and wash I think would help?...or since this is for a considerable horde army you might want skip on that and call it a day for that mini. especially I like the freehand you did on both models...
as for the black vs metall... black..as it is the better colour combination against the yellow...
@shas, thanks, but I didn't even do a highlight or anything.
@vik, they are supposed to be grimy dull warriors with armor to match.
I wanted something bright and not seen often. I would have done red to go with my bloodbowl orcs, but my brother in law did red for his main color and I wanted different. Blue wasn't feeling right and I detest orange, so yellow again. As these guys will rank up 20, 30 or 40 to a unit I'm not troubling myself with highlights. They got the delv an mud wash, and they'll get flocked, but that's gonna be about it.
Hopefully a little paint time in the morning. I checked the local hobby sore and they had testors airbrush paint, but I didn't like the colors. I think I'm going to have to just suck it up and learn to thin properly .
You won't find Vallejo or Badger AB paints at any chain stores that I know of. Michaels sells the primary color opaques, you probably don't want translucent colors for miniatures.
You can thin GW paint, but it is a pain. I've thinned the foundation paints and sprayed them already, you want mostly thinner with a bit of paint. Vigorous mixing is the key..no lumps..never ever. Experiment on paper or something first of course.
I thought about ordering from chicagoairbrushsupply.com where I got the compressor, but just don't know what colors to get. I'll probably get black as I want to do a special project . But I could just try out the local shops for that, just the one I went to today didn't have black, and only a couple opaques, none of which struck me as the yellow was really bright . The Aztec by testors looked neat, but twice the price per volume.
I just need to break down and get going on something.
Badger sells small sets and their entire line. Vallejo has small sets too. http://www.thewarstore.com/VallejoAirbrushSets.html I'm fortunate enough to have my local hobby shop really close to my house that carries Vallejo Air individually on the rack,
Think I might swing by lowes on my way in and check out that paint easy that red harvest suggested. I kept playing around with black only to get super frustrated . Gave out grabbed bits, glue and brushes.
Arise my legion of servo skulls...or at least proto type legionnaire.
I think it needs additional spot color, but not sure which to go with....maybe yellow??? NO! been there too often recently.
So I put it up to you guys, what spot color, GW please as that's what I mostly have.
I actually prefer Artist airbrush black paint (Schmincke Aerocolour) over all the other brand blacks...but you're talking to a guy who has driven all over town on a saturday shopping for the "right shade of black" before
it definitely needs some more colour ...I had it mistaken for a bare metal conversion at first glance I'd probably go for red as a spot colour ...tho yellow could be a good choice too... hazard stripes and all that... plus you could go a lil chaos and call it an iron hands that got...haha..out of hand...
You need a daylight bulb (Harsh flourescent shop-light glare going on in those pics) and also need to play with the macro setting on that camera (the table is nicely in focus though) .
The one thing I've found with the Paint Easy is that it thins anything... I've even used regular housepaint in the airbrush to paint some birdhouses at one point... just don't don't overdue it or it will take for ever to dry, and will be sticky for a while. By anything I mean including paints that most hobbyists don't use for miniatures, like the artists acrylics --Golden or Liquitex for example-- or some of the craft paints.
Try using a diffuser for the lighting, even a piece of white fabric in front of the light. I saw a photo, here. Photographer is using a plastic container for a lightbox.
I should be able to swing the plastic container as a light box, I'm in the basement after all where everything gets thrown in a box for later, when it should just go to the trash bin . Also no fancy camera here , I just grab my iPad which is usually right next to me playing a Netflix movie or show and take a quick snapshot. Much easier to upload than getting a computer involved. My fluorescent bulbs are daylight bulbs as well as the light coming in through my window on the right. I think the biggest problem was the iPad focusing on the desk, I will grab some more plasticard and put it underneath next time, its worked before for me.
Last night was brutal at work. Got my stuff done quickly, did some special projects, then had to help the overwhelmed trash guy out. We also had a department dinner because of our great scores we recieved again this month , that was the only time I got to slow down. Walked 20+ miles according to the pedometer. Probably going back to bed as I'm bone tired right now.
Now that you mention it I have to as well, but I've gotten used to it since I have to do the same on my iPhone. I rarely am at a desktop anymore, so I don't use a mouse or one click anything.
Well I found the other tips and needles for the airbrush, but the paint still clogged it all up . I cleaned he brush out four times and kept finding paint jammed everywhere. so i definitely need to get one specific paints/ paint easy thinner as I was about to chuck the compressor and brush.
Instead, I got out a storage box and tried for better pics. Not really any luck there either, but here's some orcs, they still need the teeth picked out and eyeballs.
School tonight, need to work on some homework now.
looking good, I need to ask tho...pic is not really that helpful in terms of hue... are the mantic orks meant to be green skins? can´t tell atm... but the yellow looks very good!
honestly I don't know if they are green or not in mantic land
They have very little skin showing(modest orcs ) only their faces and some spots around knees and elbows are showing any skin. I gave them a dark green basecoat and then highlighted with waaagh flesh by gw.
Game wise they have great armor and a racial ability of crushing strength (reduces opponents armor values) the heaviest orcs have crushing strength (2) which reduces enemy armor by 2pts (on a d6) which is awesome and the leader has crushing strength (3). They can also get trolls and giants which have good crushing strength as well. The boys hit hard and are durable, but have low leadership which if they get stuck in a fight then they tend to get overwhelmed. This happens a lot vs my brother in law, who fields units of zombies that are maxed out at 60-80 and I can't do enough damage in one hit to break them. They have really high leadership because hey don't care if they die or not.
Our games have been on a flat field with no terrain whatsoever, which is way too much to his advantage. His hordes don't have to manuever and they can crawl forward and surge when needed. I have fielded heavy amounts of gore riders(pig riders), but they aren't as effective without terrain to block advancing hordes.
Orcs also have extremely limited ranged attacks, and only magic is a special character who seems pointless. The undead can throw out tons of wizards to move their guys forward, or blast you with zap spells. They aLos have catapults which when they hit (rarely) they bust you up.
I realize my pics need different light and side lights, guess the other table will be used still after all.
There's only three body types on the sprue, not a lot of customizing potential, but that's what I found in most fantasy GW kits as the models must rank up in position. 1 of those ones has the head attached already, I think theres 3-4 heads to choose from to customize the others.some arms have the shield attached, some don't. The ones that don't can get a second axe to be the morax orcs (more ax). There are 2 poses of the other Orc which are heavily armored to be the pole arm wielding orcs (more crushing strength), they have extra heads and bits to make banner bearers and musicians.
War paint might happen on a few of them, squad leaders or banner bearers. I'll probably o something a little different with the bases to sort units.
I think what your photo there is missing, is light from the front.
From what I can tell, a lightbox is there to light the object from pretty much all angles to avoid shadows that hide details. You have light from above and sides, but not front. Don't be tempted to use flash though, use a lamp.
Looking nice and yellow though. Keep it up, you'll soon be through these few (hundred) models.
@Vik, http://www.manticgames.com/SiteData/Root/File/Kings%20of%20War%20Webrules%20German%20Ver1.pdf mantic games 32 page rulebook in german and its FREE. It's all translated by a fan I believe, but you can download and play from a tablet or desktop. Really easy, Oscar and Felix may enjoy it. I think I'm going to work up some 1000point armies from warhammer figs so my kids can start to play it.
@dr. H, yep, all my lights are overhead right now, I'll grab a lamp and set it in front, thanks its always the obvious I keep missing.
@dsteingass, I know, but we've been playing mainly for learning the rules, now we got the basics down its time to start the other stuff. We haven't needed to worry about cover saves as neither of us has had missile troops .
Okay I stopped by hobby lobby last night and got some airbrush paint.
Will try it out once kids are on the bus today. I bought the six pack of primary colors (plus black, white and green) in the opaque. Hopefully dave and the others didn't just When seeing these.
The set of 6 was $24.99, minus the usual 40% off coupon plus tax made it around $16. Not bad for 12 oz of paint (about700ml) or I could get 12ml of GW paint and thin it down at $4 a pot , and we've seen how that's worked out for me .
See you soon, hopefully with something to show for it.
Createx works just fine. My local Michaels used to carry it, and I had that exact set. (purchased with a 40% off coupon too) If I recall, it needed to be shaken all the time.
Well shook it vigorously, but its all still messed up. I get about 3 sprays then clumps. I checked the paint, no lumps. Stripped and cleaned the brush again, it clumps again, cleaned again, more clumps. Cleaned again and sitting to the side. I'm shooting at 15psi, I've adjusted all my knobs and stuff, can't figure this out. All the openings are clear (I can see all the way down the barrel when the needle is removed. Time to time the cap bubbles over with paint, or the cleaner when I'm clearing it. Do I have the pressure too high?
Took a picture
This is what's happening. Will try with lower pressure next.
What are you cleaning with? Alcohol can cause clumping in acrylic paints. (won't bore you with the chemistry of it) so please water only, with maybe a touch of liquid dishsoap-- like 1 drop per cup.
Here is a trick I use. Thin the paints just a touch with some thinner if needed. Now screen the paint through a filter of some sort that will catch any clumps, but won't filter the pigment...so no coffee filters...use a nylon mesh like uh, it is called Voile I think.
15 PSI is not too high for a gravity feed, but it is near the maximum you'd want. For a siphon feed ~20 PSI usually works.
Also, try shooting water through it after cleaning, using the water like it is paint. This is a way to get a feel for trigger control, and to see that the brush is working properly. Spray it on old newspaper or something and try to control the patterns, lines of varying thickness and also spots of varying diameter.
Final note, start the airflow, ie depress the trigger, then pull back on the trigger to get the paint flowing. Always do this rather than trying to shoot paint right away. Trigger control is the essence of airbrushing. And this require practice.
And when painting, if you notice build up of paint on the needle, you can wipe it off with a q-tip or toothpick, but never anything metal.
Thanks red, I've got he pump set to 13psi right now. I'm cleaning with windex, there's a bunch of YouTube video discussing cleaning and even thinning with windex and they all say , but I'm thinning with testors airbrush thinner. I thought I had it figured out, was missing an o ring by the front tip, which one video said that allows the air to backup into the cup. Replaced th owing, but problem persists still , I've changed needles(and corresponding tips) still no luck. Think I'm going to just use my brushes again for awhile, maybe. Break will give me fresh eyes.
If it's bubbling out of the cup, you've got dried paint on the tip (where the needle opens and closes) That's pretty common when spraying acrylics. Just unscrew the spray regulator and scrape it off. I keep a stiff brush handy with some water to randomly clean it when spraying before it dries. You'll get used to it after awhile. Don't get discouraged.
I've given the tips good cleaning, even switched to the third needle and tip for it(correct tips and needles at same time). It's been mentioned in a lot of the videos I've watched. I even have brushes for the tips which I've used, its clear inside.
Final cleaning tip. The inside of the nozzle. Paint can build up inside it, so use a toothpick or even a sharpened q-tip shaft to clean it off. Never use anything metal to clean it.
When you work the needle back and forth do you get a sputter spray and then it stops, but when you work the needle back and forth it sputter sprays again and stops again? This indicates a clog in the nozzle.
I've had some great success with using craft paint thinned with distilled water that I have run through a ab paint strainer (sold by harbor freight). As long as I clean the ab out thoroughly it runs just fine.
I checked needle tip, not bent, fully cleaned out, tried using soap and water to clean, still having the sputtering issue. I'll look into a new airbrush soon, for now I'll just go back to my brush, when I get to paint again.
Easter weekend was fun time with the family , much egg hunting done, unfortunately everywhere we went had egg recycling, so no free plastic eggs, just a ton of candy . Got to see some family (mine) yesterday before going to work and he wife taking the kids to her dads and grandparents.
Nothing new hobby built, ideas are percolating, but the motivation hasn't hit me. But something is scurrying around in the dark corners of my mind .
The Testors airbrush thinner is specifically for acrylics right? I know you'll never get a mix from totally incompatabe paint and thinner (like acrylic paint and mineral spirits / enamel thinner) but if it's something like water based paint and isopropyl alcohol they will mix but they might act funny anyway.
What made me think of this is I've been dying leather with alcahol based dye through an airbrush recently and swapping H2O and the alcohol would give me the opisite problem of the "paint" not drying quick enough.
Just ordered a new airbrush, hopefully I'll get it to work right otherwise there will be a lot of models and a slightly used compressor on eBay soon . I kid......maybe. I did some brushwork this morning, 20 mantic orcs now have their basic yellow layer down or armor and cloaks, and the initial green skin base tone is on hem as well. He wife is out tonight at a trivia night, I'll be home with the kids, Harry potter movie and Dairy Queen concretes . I'll probably sit at he kitchen table and maybe do a few more colors and layers while they watch the movie or do their own crafts.
Creature caster kickstarter is still going strong and has unlocked the treewoman, next looks like a zombie dragon. Though my favorite suggestion for a stretch goal is in the lead, I don't see it happening, though I hope it does. Image spoilered for effect.
Spoiler:
Canadian chimera, Jeremy is Canadian and was wanting something original, one of the other supporters suggested it and another talented person drew it
well your AB struggles sure don´t sound good... I keep crossing my fingers for you theo...productivity limitations due to tools that don´t do their duty... with our free time being so limited...that is not a thing we should tolerate ...
also...thanks for the rules...the whole minions theme in itself makes it even possible to field two entire armies yellow minions vs purple and then I could use these rules even
@dave, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004KNDQMM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile, it's the one the blackadder uses(hehe), also a clone and got it on sale for $28.49, three needles as well. Once i have it I will have something to compare my other one to and see if I can figure what's wrong with it.
@vik, not only is it a big beaver shot it has a huge rack as well @shaso, the new name circulating around for it is the canucachimera.
Not much painting happened last night, more snuggle time than anything. Still catching up
On sleep, wicked tired this week. Maybe today after church and stuff.
Sweet! That looks kind of like an Iwata HP with the needle regulator on the back. What is that control on the bottom front I wonder? I'll definitely be interested too see how it works! Remember to use the bigger needle for acrylics first to eliminate frustration.
Dave you can see it in action over here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/564134.page the_Blackadder is using it to paint up some cockroach colored tyranids, he considers himself a noob with the airbrush much like someone else I know did a year or so ago . He is having some good success with it so I figured why not try it out. Besides as I ordered it the total cam up less, seems they were having a sale at the time . Anyway the cockroach color on the nids is very nice, soooooo nice that I may pilfer it for something of my own, not starting a nid army, but I have all these genestealers from space hulk and two sets of battle for maccragge, so might see some advancement on them.
To that end to move things along I decided it was time to bust out an old helpful tool I haven't seen anyone use In awhile.
The priming stick .
No special wood needed, just something large enough and flat that bases can fit on, in this case it's a bed slat from the bunk bed/table I just disassembled. Wrap that rascal with either masking tape or the blue painters tape with the sticky side out and cover 3/4 of the length. Wrap it tight so there's no slack in the tape. Stick figures on the tape, in this case I was able to fit two figs Side by side with space in between them. On one side I have 12 or so spore mines, 6 hive nodes, 2swarming nodes, and most of the genestealers from space hulk. The other side has more of those genestealers as well as 6 basic genestealers from bfm and other bits. Took it outside to prime it, able to roll the stick over to get all sides of the models with good coverage in less than three minutes. Now the stick is hanging via vise grip to air out on my painting desk. Once dry I can remove them in short order, re wrap the stick and prime 50+ more models quickly, or grab another bed slat Here's the pre primed board.
Edit: leaving for work, but here is a test subject
I need to do the tongue in a different color than black.
oh.... I primed some of my marines way back in almost a similar way...but I used double sided tape for one and in another I used cable binders to bind the minis to a stick... each method had its merits...
you´re definitely a horder sir... so many nids and you plan not to field them
oh and I would always use a new board to stick the minis on... if you play your card right you could make yourself a drying rack sort of for a real batch painting frenzy...
I like the gradient look..There's something to be said about creative freedom with non-human minis. I enjoyed doing the irradiated skin on my Super Mutants.
Been super busy this week, I work thru Thursday so not much time to do stuff especially with getting things lined up for trips and whatnot. The airbrush arrived today, no instructions and the half piece of bubble wrap protected the one side o the fake leather case it came in from dents, but the other side is a beat to heck, plus the glue they used to make the box didn't hold so the outside faux leather all came off . No time to try it out till maybe Tuesday. About to head out the door for work now. Hand painted some spore mines(I love them), and some terrain elements for the nids.
The black areas are highlighted with grey/black, and I'm thinking about making some of the tentacles on the spores an orangish color, some are more of spiky tentacle surrounded by the regular smooth tentacles.
New airbrush in action . Well at least basecoating is going quicker

Edit: so I was hearing the call of the broodlord. First he said "look over there!"
Then he said "ooooo ooooo now look over there!"
Then he said "Nom Nom Nom!"
I'm not liking the vein color on his head, what do you guys think. I'm trying to stay bug like, maybe just going black with it. Also claws will get a highlight and then washed black.
for veins I think I would go fully squishy ugly... so more some opportunity for a new spotcolour? maybe purple or pink? also a green could look good to the beige/ brown look too...
funny thing is I always planned to have my nids look that way... but then I got rid of them... my own SM chapter is a bit similar to that scheme here... the idea was to have them both in similar schemes to have them as arch enemies...
vik, my nids will have my scythes of the emperor as their enemies, lots of yellow and black armor bits to show their friendship.
It's Los getting me thinking about terrain again .
Makes me laugh every time I check in on your thread its a different army or manufacture nice looking Nids by the way like the colour choice more an earthy tone creepy
Yes it was I thought I should get back in the game so to speak
Greenwash might look good maybe highlight the veins a little bit first with a lighter brown, that way it might pull them out a little more with the wash.
I'm at work right now, so I'll make sure and follow up with comments later tonight/ in the morning when I'm not on my phone.
Thanks everyone for the support and the encouragement. The nids started because the minion making idea had a flaw...ME . I didn't think it through and ruined my mold/forms. Butt(haha) fear not as I got new ones today and one of the lady's in the material supply department wants to see them when they are done. She might be my first commission customer for her grandson if these turn out okay.
While cleaning tonight I had a cunning plan on how to make the minions with the new molds. It is a cunning plan, butt(hehe) I might be overlooking something. We will hopefully see tomorrow.

Edit: so I stopped at Walmart for supplies, trying the next Theophony bat crazy idea. Left the new molds in the car and was too lazy to go get them, besides I figure I'll test it out on the remaining parts that I had so he we are.
Half minion head on. Pot of paint was my attempt with fast set drywall plaster. Unfortunately I made it too dry and it didn't fill the mold and had air pockets . But figured I'd paint one up fast to see how it looked.
The partial tray just to his right is test run "b", cheapest craft/Elmer's glue out there , $0.44 for 4 fluid oz. just so you know all the filled trays totaled up to about 3 fluid oz.
The three rows over to the far right is one more row of run "b" and then two rows of run "c" which is the same as "b" except I sprayed the trays first with some cooking spray. This is just in case the glue actually sticks to the plastic , its not listed as a plastic glue, but it would be just my luck that the cheap stuff glues better than epoxy.
Also notice too late that there are different sized tube trays . Should have known, here are different sized sample tubes, so the messed up sample minion is one of th larger tubes and what's on the table are smaller ones. Well I think there's variety in the minions from the movie, so maybe all will work out in the end.
Tired now , hopefully the glue is cured in the morning.
Nids and Minions now thats something i never expected to see on the same table
Although I am starting to think you are clinically insane your mind seems to have no limits to creativity, good luck with the glue setting but still being removable BIG fingers crossed here for you.
You know I keep thinking a Minion Chess board when looking at the this for some reason, how cool would that be evil purples one end and yellows the other
no short selling your stuff theo here!!! or there will be gibbs´slapps aplenty! i like your out of the box thinking!... i must say... these trays really make me envious... my wife recently told me that my eager plans for using these olive shaped wooden beads wasn´t so perfect...at all... i think you are way closer to the real mccoy that you say...at least in my humble opinion...
i am rather eager to see how the elmers glue experiment works out... plaster...i can see working... but with the glue... that could open up some new ranges of casting stuff rather quick... be sure to have it cure really neatly... as the peaks/domes of said trays probably will take a lot of time to dry out... if ever...maybe if you have a neat crust cured on the flat side, then drill a small hole as a vent in the dome...that could help cure the glue through and through...
Almost awake, getting the kids ready, figured I'd try and comment while they eat breakfast. In no particular order.
@inmygravenimage, yes, first postat top of this page is a link to his page, plus I've been frequently (we as frequently as i have been, ive been bad lately, hopefully I'm out of my dulldrums now and will be back annoying people soon enough) posting in his comments on all his works, just amazing.
@LDD, minion chess board will be a ABSOLUTE , now to get these things going. Plus I knew you were slow(7years on a bathroom is a bit much ), but your just now figuring out I'm crazy .
@shaso, genestealers behind , the like sneaking up on people and sticking their tongue in their ears @monkeytroll, I might try some rotting flesh green on the veins with a green wash, thanks @cam, lurking is hat we genestealers do best , but winter is over and now I am almost out of my spring allergy induced coma, so hopefully more fun is on the way.
@dsteingass, yes aliens give us so many possibilities with the color choices, plus don't tell anyone I was tired of painting marines And lastly, but most importantly....
@Vik, your thread is such a source of inspiration and encouragement, thank you. While your bead guys may not make convincing minions to your wife, I think you still have a possible army concept from them....the olive drab guard. If you paint them up like olives (green or black) you could create your own unique theme. Have them wield toothpicks, cocktail umbrellas, and the little plastic swords that come in novelty drinks. You can make a few clear ice cubes for a couple of bases and have a couple in a martini glass as a flying unit while putting 10 of them in a jar on its side to count as a rhino or chimera. Sure everyone who sees them will think that you've had one too many drinks, but it could be amazing .
Okay onto the progress........
Yeah, the glue still hasn't set yet , I hit it with a toothpick and its all still as thin as ever. It might be because its the cheap stuff, or might be because there's so much of it, but either way we are on hold until that sets up.
In the mean time I will be bringing some of my paints upstairs today as I rented Hobbit2, desolation of smaug. I haven't seen it yet, so I'll play it in the family room and paint while listening to it. I might give the plaster another go as well while I watch.
Lastly for now I wanted to plug this kickstarter again
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jeremyglen/creature-caster-first-wave Only 4days left, less than $100 for a FW greater demon sized monster , and the quality will be awesome as Jeremy used to be the owner/sculpted for ultraforgeminiatures.com. I owned a couple of the demons from there in the past but sold them a few years ago. Very nice stuff, I'm in with an early bird silver and getting the pincer demon. I'd like to get more, but the funds are being drawn elsewhere right now. Anyway he has everything unlocked now for this kickstarter and is not doing more so he can ship in November. Check him out, money is in Canadian dollars, and shipping is separate from total, but he will be shipping from multiple warehouses around the lobe and pretty sure he will get around the VAT charges by shipping out of England.
theo!!!!....ye ol´genius!... that is a lovley idea!...besides, I have been ogling over scratchbuilt armies for quite some time now, gingerbread men armies or the bloodletters army made from pipe cleaners as actual letters... or I even saw some of these easter decoration chickens...
and that olive army I can totally see before my eyes... with a big martini bottle as a battle tank...the floating martini´s is especially a genius idea in itself... also... this would be an army where painting is only second place as most is just careful planned building...
and to top it all I could make my own rules on how to make these work and build instead of just rebuilding something I've seen...(only downside is my kids get no minions...) but be sure...there will be BOLS (Battle Olives looking spiffy...)
For a bit of style, here you get olives filled with almonds or peppers. So I figured the could wear berets in red to go with the er...olive green body...
Thats it I really do give up on you two using household leftovers is one thing but food itself its madness I tell you madness, although you could use bar snacks like peanuts or cashews as Doctrines .......... all my god I am joining in now

all knew you´d eventually anyways...
You want to see what I have done with a box of rice krispies and crunchy nut cornflakes, necromunda scavies anyone

was it you that made the khorne berserker with actual corn flake heads , it was a while back and I can't remember who did them.
We're not using real olives, Vik got some wooden beads that look olive shaped in an attempt to make minions. He wasn't completely satisfied with them so I've given him an alternate idea.
Vik, do t forget to make both black olives and green olives, of course you'll have to give the black olives larger pimentos . Also you could use all sorts of bar items depending on how you build these guys. We already mentioned glasses and the martini shaker, but you could use ashtrays or bowls of nuts for vehicles. If you ever did a display board for them it should be a traveling mini bar and the backdrop have a functioning dart board. The darts can have olive pilots either riding them like the guy in Dr. Strangelove rides the bomb down in the end, or have them pierced through the tip. Also if you use the peanut tray idea you need to make a Mr. Peanut dead on the ground with one of these olive guys standing over him wearing the monocle , he could be your badass general.
that´s beginning to sound like a true villains army...
the black olives idea is a very sound addition...hmmm.... I am thinking more like a chestnut colored barcounter....with that raised rim so that the beer doesn´t topple over when the barkeeper shoves the pints over the surface...
personally I think currently the martini glass idea is the strongest one...that and a nice shaker...I can also imagine some olives carrying a giant stirrer as a kind of battering ram...
Need to know what army your going to field them as for further hilarity. If it were marines I'd have to say use the olives with umbrellas as assault marines with jump packs . If your doing fantasy(KOW), then the stirring sticks idea sounds great, along with those plastic drink novelty animals for their mounts.
On another note the glue still isn't dried on to plan "d" or are we to " h" yet? I'm considering breaking down and buying a casting kit now for this build. I should just get back to my orcs aNd nids.
no idea as to what to field them as...(KOW) might be the current best idea tho...
as for the glue still not cured... before you hand out a mountain of cash... one more try... add some super glue to the mix...the amount of glue could get complicated...but worth a try...
Not responsible for Korn flake marines but I have seen them as well didn't forge world do an april fool's joke with corn flakes
See cheap glue is bloody useless thats why it is cheap glue try a hair dryer on it might help
Vik what about shot glasses as mortars crewed by olives of course, if you go fantasy you could use toothpicks to build a spear unit or even rough riders if still 40k then you could use a novelty drink animal for the mount O no what have I become
@ldd, you have given in to the dork side .
@vik, king of war( KOW) is great fun, you could build them as a green army versus a black army and for big games they can tag team together. I think doing abyssal dwarves might be good as you could have the fire breathing olive unit (jalapeños?). Or you could just field them as orcs, but they have no firepower but are tough buggers. They do have chariots though so mount the glasses on coasters instead of bases.
All this is making me want to build a similar army , maybe I'll forget the minions and make a peanut army. I can have the planters peanut guy as the general. Then one day we can actually get together and have a beer and pretzel game . It'll be nuts I could even have pirate allies, they'll be the salty nuts . "BAR FIGHT"
Who else will join us in this insanity????
Theos first army challenge. Build a king of war counts as army 500points. Must be bar humor.
"It's time to raise the bar on these challenges"
Come on ldd, there's the spicy peppers, wings, chex mix, lemons, limes, cherries(or combine them into the citrus gang), heck make ogre sized army of the condiments(salt and pepper, ketchup, mustard) or even a cigarette/cigar army. Anything bar related.
I don't even mind if someone else does nuts as well. Or other nut varieties like cashews.

So when we say "bar theme" we can include bars that serve food ermmm that allows more options, after looking at your list you obviously have higher class bars than we do around these parts
Ldd if you so want to do a fish and chips army go right ahead. Lamb chops are welcome too.
Just army of hookers and used condoms. We have plenty of those here too
Theophony wrote: Ldd if you santo utile a fish and chips army go right ahead. Lamb chops are welcome too.

LOL no its more like moaning old farts or kiddies club for the under age drinkers no up market cocktail bars around here
Okay so then should it be expanded to any condiments from the pantry or refridgerator?
Edit: played around with the vein color on the stealers and spore mines. I think. Have what I want....lt blue.
It's kind of glowy , possibly bioluminescent, or just alien blue goo blood.
Suggestions? I don't want it to overpower the rest of the model .
Thanks guys, its been a busy weekend, so time for me to reawaken and get doing something.
We stopped by a party supply store this weekend to pick stuff up for church event. I had to buy some weapons 250 cocktail spears for the eventual ogre army(Mr. Planters party animals )
More that need painting
And primed some reinforcements
Completed stealers
The front few just need the blue added. All will get their basing done seperately later.
I currently own a package of clear coloured spears/sticks... they have a kind of tear drop shape at the other end...always wanted to use them for my lasguns...
the nids really look creepy...something about black fingernails that makes my spine curl....
man up, I know you don't have daughters vik, or you'd have pretty nails too. Usually I only let them do my toes as I can wear socks. But now thinking about it, what would people think if I were in a car accident and they took my socks and shoes off .
The painted toenails? ... Not much really. Those guys (some of my best friends are in Fire and Rescue) have pretty much seen everything. Plus, they're too busy saving your life to care anyway. The stories they can tell though...
Theophony wrote: man up, I know you don't have daughters vik, or you'd have pretty nails too. Usually I only let them do my toes as I can wear socks. But now thinking about it, what would people think if I were in a car accident and they took my socks and shoes off .
the thing is my wife is a beauty without any makeup or additional colour whatsoever...thus we actually have one bottle of nailwhatchacalling at home anyways... and mind you... saw a woman in the telly doing her nails... BRUSHSTROKES all over the gawd damned nail.... is that a way of painting???...I say nooooo
Loving the airbrush ,
19 termagants
16 stealers
All base coated in just under an hour
1 more termagant got half primed before it got clogged, spent half hour unclogging it, I think the last guy will just become battle damage
At these to the
18 finished genestealers and my production rate has increased by a factor of 1000 over the three previous years combined.
It really isn't that bad. I was watching tv and cleaning at he same time. Plus I couldn't find my airbrush cleaning brushes, did a full strip down of the airbrush, and some o the paint I used had clumps in it that I missed . I'll get better with it and quicker with the cleaning as time goes on. PLUS I wanted to make sure I didn't botch this one like I must have botched the last one.
Already did the dark brown on four of the others genestealers, needing to run errands and eat something so I might be back later today with more of an update. Day off from work, doesn't mean no work to be done. Been wiped out plus a 20 degree F change in weather has been bothering my sinus, I've been hiding under a blanket instead of doing stuff. Time to get moving again.
I feel your pain mate, weather is all funny currently here too and my heads feeling like a pumpkin most of the mornings too... that and private stuff that has gone ugly that is way too much currently but not really fit to be said here......
as for the AB... I hope you never use any sharp stuff/tools to clean it up... that´d be a sad thing to do...
Back from errands, wanted to see how this scheme translates to smaller critters.
I like it, messed up the eye and teeth, but that just needs a little touch up.
Really tempted to run over to miniature market and buy a whole swarm, or at least a big guy.....or two.
I might use the half primed termagant as a test model as I had thought the same myself. I was thinking of a lighter yellow highlight or spots similar to how some butterflies have false "eyes" on their wings to scare predators.
Theophony wrote: I might use the half primed termagant as a test model as I had thought the same myself. I was thinking of a lighter yellow highlight or spots similar to how some butterflies have false "eyes" on their wings to scare predators.
First off, I think they look great. The way you have it now really looks like a carapace, which makes sense. I really like the muted tones, though--you have edge highlights in there, they're just not bright. Thinking of these creatures as ones that are pretty "mass spawned" I think that's consistent. I mean, I could imagine a hive fleet designing/evolving some pattern of camouflage to assist in a given terrain...but I could just as easily imagine the Hive Mind ignoring survivability completely, and just designing billions of muted, dull Termagants. So I like it.
In terms of adding some bright points, I do think that single spots of color (beige/muted yellow would work, I think) would be better than other edge highlights. Otherwise, you could go with a darker spot, similar to the flesh, to make them look more camouflaged?
@pantheralegaionnaire, thanks, and welcome to the show.
@dr. H, we will just go with the fact that the hive mind has not assimilated any dentists yet. In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war....and over bites.....and cross bites....and periodontal disease....
@shaso, I do love it for base coating, but haven't tried any detail or smaller areas yet.
@vik, I think I'll leave off the extra color until I get up to the big guys.
Well my first army in miniature gaming 25+ years ago was skaven. After 30+ models and my army being nowhere complete I swore off horde armies. I'm beginning to remember why Still a long way to go.
I asked Ifalna once, how she did 'nid teeth in the hope of a good quick way of doing them... The answer was to layer them up from brown to white (via cream) and paint each tooth individually.
Wasn't quite the tip I was after, but she did say that things like the teeth and the rest of the face are the important part of a model to get right as it's what people mainly look at and is the focus of the model.
Still, I don't have to tell you how many teeth a tyranid has...
Quickie as I'm going out the door..... , I meant pictures of nids you sickos 7 of the 16 or so termagants are complete n the top row, the rest need the edge highlights, washes and dental work.
I got a little concerned at work last night, I was realizing that I am almost out of my precious GW chestnut ink from 20+ years ago. It and the other inks are still good in their pots unlike other paints from GW history . But I found an article this morning talking about using liquidtex inks and the transparent burnt umber is identical to the chestnut ink . Now to find who sells them local, I think the local art stores have them, probably a trip there this week.
Trying not to stop at miniaturemarket on my way to work and buy the tyranid swarm
http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Tyranid-Swarm 40 termagants
40 hormogaunts
10 gargoyles
4 bases of rippers
And a carnifex
Well, with the additional help of an AB horde armies are a rad less scary to tackle... But that be around what? 200 $ worth in plastic crack?...
Also, via eBay you can still get mint inks from ol citadel ... Was about to do that recently too...
Those were the days when GW knew how to put colours in containers properly Still have my chestnut, it's the red and particularly the yellow that I miss. Although I'm finding some of the P3 inks rather nice.
On lunch right now, but have resisted the urge to buy the nids set so far.
@giraffex, thanks and welcome back to the madness
@shaso, not buying more really is bugging me, I'm torn between buying the set(but that would break my ban on GW), or saving for other things since I don't even play 40k.
@mt, thanks, the local flgs carries p3 so I'll try that sometime soon.
@ vik, it's a real deal as miniaturemarket down the street has it for 20% off too.
My big problem shaso is that I work evenings except school night once a week(which is family night over the summer), and I have every other weekend off, which is also family time. I don't get to game much (ever) and my brother in law is cramming to get his CPA in record time. He is even using vacation time from work to study. I'm lucky to get one game of something in every other month. My kids say they want to learn, but then when we sit down to teach or show them they have no interest. So I can continue to feed my crack addiction hoping something changes, or I can just continue to paint up what I have. Money is always tight, so I'm thinking of selling these bad boys off on eBay when I'm done. I'm not a commission painter as most of my stuff is tabletop quality at best, but I have so much junk right now I could sell a bunch off and get more to paint up, and sell it.
Oh well, mid life crisis in full swing.
Meanwhile I finished the termagants today.
The horde as it stands, still have more genestealers to paint.
I know only evil dentists...(I joke...my kids actually go willingly to the dentist...which tells you a story...)
and I feel your pain mate... money seems to be a plant growing in someone else´s garden...
my entry of the "I am not worthy " comp I will try to sell soon...
and I too have way more stuff hobbywise than I will be able to play/ paint in my lifetime already...but well....we see so many nice stuff... it is hard to resist^^
I hear you on the kids. Real shame, mine just have no patience, painting takes too long.
Extra shame, my daughter would kill me if I told you I have a large number of Nids boxed in my horders cupboard, I have to paint them for her, no hope of her doing it, and I do not relish the thought of about 100 nids.
hmmm.... what about a simple scheme... maybe black primer, then drybrushing with grey or beige or white... then dipping?... nids "can" work with just basic work...(for a certain amount of work...)
my youngest oskar is urging me on to have him join in on the painting... and I am very hesitant to let him start... control and patience might be too much for him and too less for me to have him start...I said he could join in on my next bigger thing to paint...a tank scratchbuilt...
My girls are into painting and art, my son is just lazy. When I do get a game in my son watches for three minutes then goes and does his own thing. Usually on the iPad. The girls prefer craftier things.....like painting rocks , yes they grab rocks out of the area by our driveway and paint them, usually pink.
In the last year or so I've given away a bunch of stuff, usually to other gamers. I've sent off my imperial guard guys, my orks(40k), my dark eldar, my eldar and assorted other things. And I still have too much left. Oh well I used to make six figure.
Those aren't just rocks....those are slaaneshi rocks.....soon they'll be lining up against the green nurgly rocks and the red khorney rocks.....mark my words
And no need to worry about any inappropiate imagery when it's only rocks involved.
Looking good Theo
shame about games, I also need to finish painting as I am at present not getting games due to the long distance of the stores to house.
Thanks monkeytroll, that's the right attitude , they can also be elemental a in KOW.
Shaso, there's also the problem of transporting your entire army. Soon you will need an 18wheeler to drag your army around.

stopped by miniaturemarket.com today, my ban on buying new GW models is
Spoiler:
still in tact
They had the tyranid box set there and it and all the other tyranid things were calling my name, buy the hive mind does not control me yet . Jones was not acting strangely today, although some large Star Wars:X-Wing boxes did get purchased. I am now the owner of a rebel starship and tantive transport. The tantive I must pick up tomorrow though as all they physically had today were being packed up and shipped out right then, but no worries, they have 1500 of them coming in tomorrow. 1500 I was like . Anyway while I was there a guy saw me ogling the nids, and gave m his contact info, he is looking to sell his new nids for dirt cheap . Lots o new models, assembled but not painted. I had told him ho pathetic my gaming budget was, even before I bought the Star Wars stuff, but seams h needs the cash quick so looks like a fire sale. I'll let you all know when/if anything happens.
I wish we had such a widespread but high density gaming population here too, to have so much luck...good luck anyway to use that chance!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Could you please give me the measurements of yon turdis? Got an idea planned and need some guidance... Thanks in advance...
Not as big a fleet as shaso, but mine has rules and worldwide tournaments .
Marine for scale. Now to drool over all the cards and counters that came in these boxes. The x-wing comes with the rebel transport, and has a slightly different paint job than the other x-wings.
So I'm guessing they changed scale for those two then?
Does that affect gameplay in any way?
Just out of interest, like..I have no intention of playing, and if I ever pick them up for display purposes (not an unlikely scenario ) I wouldn't be bothered...just curious.
MT, the big ships are indeed a different scale(from what I recall). As for the game itself, the regular system remains, but to field the big ships there is now EPIC play. 300 points per side on a larger mat, an these ships have different templates or movement. Also in regular games if ships "bump"( run into each other), they stop where they are at, no harm done, just lose movement and cannot shoot the ones in base contact with them. These big ships however bring a new plan, run into everything . If you hit a big ship you evplode . So crashing into a tie fighter swarm has so much appeal to me. Also I believe they block Line of sight as well, I must read the rules first.
Nice thing about my ships, I can get a copy of the Starblazers rules, and update them a bit for 2199(yes, there is a mini game for Starblazers) I would just be using the 2 scales for combat as the fighters are not 1/1000 scale, but, I do have me the ability to field 1/1000scales planes in groups as they did come with the ships.LOL
OR
I can adapt the fleet with "Full Thrust" rules, so I have just shot Theo's theory of my fleet down with a full particle beam broadside!

Asked again...
I totally missed the last times you asked about it. Sometimes I'll read a post when I get home from work 1:00 am, and not comment till I'm half awake 6:30am when I get up before my kids.
I'm guessing you mean my old cd sized competition entry
40x40x70mm
It could have been smaller, but the dice box that is the core of it was that sized. You could almost fit a space marine terminator inside of this, so GW rules would say it has a transport capacity equal to a storm ravem
I finished 9 more genestealers yesterday , I only have 6left before I'm out of tyranids . Glad i spent my hobby wad on Star Wars figs. Guess I should contact that guy I met at the shop the other day and see about his "good deal".
Also stopped at the grocery store last night and rented Thor:dark world,I never got to see it in theater so I hope it's decent.
Don't mind me, but that movie is not that good...but then again I thought the first one was rather weak too...
Sounds like you're addicted to nids now well I say ask that fella...alternatively you could kook at the swap shop here...
Also, no need to apologize mate, I knew you didn't ignore my call for help on purpose...
Indeed, your turdis is bigger than my attempt...which I will reveal today in ny own thread... also, thanks fir using European measuresment
No problem Vik , I actually use metric when making smaller models instead of inches, makes everything easier.
The movie wasn't great, then again I've never been a fan of Thor, so it was better than expected.
Well since I'm almost done with nids, I need to find something else to do with painting, so back into the army box(basement) I go.
After digging around, shovels were involved, no pick ax though, I decided to work on this next
What you can't tell what they are in the bag.......
Spoiler:
Boobs or not I'm going to start these . I have an pledge in on creature caster for the pincer demon, who will centerpiece this army.
http://www.creaturecaster.com/products/pincerdemon It should arrive in November, so I have time to practice on these until then. I don't want to go with the standard color scheme. Originally I wanted to try and do them to look like Gigi edgely from Farscape. Grey tones for the body with white hair, but the look of the keeper of secrets......I mean pincer demon makes me think more crustacean colors of red/orange. I remember an old white dwarf had a picture of some brown orange deamonettes that I though were awesome, might have a go at that too. So I'll have to recount what I have but I think I have a ton of these....ladies including the boob-horses and a second boob-worm. I guess they'll all get spoilered as they are NSFW)]
I think the blue/grey look would be quite good for them. The KoS and pincer daemon don't necessarily have to match them though if you want to do something more exciting with them. Make them stand out a bit more from a sea of blue/grey boobs...
No problem Dr. H, grey is the usual skin tones you see on them, then purple, white or blue. At least that's what I always see when people paint them. Maybe yellow.......
not_u here on dakka did his demons in purple / grey/ pink...which I think looked bloody good...
I think demons is a good army to test new entirely different schemes you haven´t done yet...
and these look very cool...and I do like some nsfw every once in a while^^...so we definitely need an army shot of these soon
@shaso, indeed they are the best deamonettes ever
@vik, I did follow not_u thread, I like his style very much
@Dr. H, I think the more natural skin tones might be the way to go
Spoiler:
so i had a try at more natural without using human skin tones. I used rakarth(sp) flesh as the base with agrax earth shade wash. I'll try to touch one up ( slaaneshi influence) tomorrow with some drybrushing. But wanted your opinions on the tones so far. Also I think I'm going with dark green as the cloth color, tried orange for something different, but couldn't justify it.
Lord Gern Sey Looks so much darker for some reason.
It's slightly lighter than this in real life.
I used yellow for the eye on the keeper of secrets, I think it looks okay, and I can always chalk it up to jaundice from too much alcohol destroying the liver. I didn't want to go with black as I don think it would be as haunting, and yellow is just so unusual . Also metals will be chainmail silver so the enemy can see the reflection of their own death and watch their souls be swallowed . But I need a second/third color to go with it all. The Lord has one black boot right now and I think the other should be a different color besides green. I don't want to do the typical flamboyant over the top riot of colors either. The other color should be able be a unit skirt color like the green. The orange was too much.
Hmmm, I am not that firm with demons, so I am not much of an assistance here for the scheme... But I think it needs definitely some spotcolours...green would be of course a good choice to the rather brownish current appearance..
You could do the eyes also as follows: a mithril base and then layers of your chosen wash for a cheap glowy effect.
And also...I do have a female minotaure in my collection...tell me if you might fancy that for a slaaneshy do...will try to take pics of her tonight...she is around 5-6 cm tall...
@vik, great idea about the silver eyes, I might even skip the wash and just go silver. It would mesh with the silver armor plates to be a mirror in the opponents soul @shasho, how did I forget yours. Must be all the giant robots and starships you've done lately as well as section N.
I painted the boob worm in the same style, still not totally sold on it, but I think I need to pick up some more airbrush thinner this weekend so I can production line these like I did the genestealers.
Man it feel so good to look at my little tyranid horde and be impressed that I Painted all that in two weeks. Very cathartic, then I look at all my other untainted stuff .
I tried a purple slaaneshi daemonette, didn't like it, s she will be getting stripped, I just need to find n appropriate pole .
Edit: well I figured I had just enough thinner left, so I used the airbrush tonight, no kids woke up so that's good , so is this jump start.
@comrade, it makes me a happy panda that you have returned. As for highlighting with the airbrush, I've just started to use it for basecoating, and my skills aren't that controlled yet, so just mass basecoating has helped me get painting feverishly again.
@vik, the boob work and these deamonettes are older highly sought after Juan Diaz sculpts. I've been horsing them for well over 10years. What GW has thought of next is crappy looking pg13 deamonettes with bad hair.
Well it's my weekend off so much family time to be had. Beautiful weather so we are heading to the park for some exercise outside, shoot some hoops, and have fun. When all that's done my wife and sister in law will be here at home making cookies and hanging out. My niece and kids will be playing and I might get some free time to paint. My brother in law aced his first exam for being a certified public accountant, but is busy studying for the next exam so he'll be at home doing that so no game . Makes me sad that I just got these new ships for x-wing and they are just sitting there not blowing stuff up.
My pledge for creaturecaster kickstarter is not finalized yet, so I've been thinking(scary). While I've been hoarding these deamonettes I probably will never play them, like most of my armies, but since boobs are everywhere I don't want my kids getting bad ideas. So I think I might get them painted, just so I can say I did, and then sell them. If I do that I want to change my pledge to the angry demon from creature caster because I always wanted to build a khorne demon army.
I might throw these up in the swap shop again, maybe this time I'll get a offer.
Honestly, mate you should do a khornish angry marine army...if you couldn't do this, no one can...
And I feel your pain here...all the stuff I build will probably never (read in years to come...) get to be played with...which is annoyingly sad...
Got to ask this, even tho I already know you're an american boy...why could bewbs cause trouble with your kids? My would probably just snigger way dirtier than I could have thought and be over with it....if you know what I mean...
Angry marines have been calling me for a long time Vik....and they're yellow .
Bewbs are the issue because I have daughters not sons like you. Plus I don't want them to get some wired idea of what's
"Sexy" from figures with six Bewbs, claws and tentacles for hair.
I was considering khorne demon army though, not marines.
Ooo i actually am in the market for what you are moving. Happy panda joys around. Well keep up the painting! it is nice to see you working on those models.
reply sent to your message. Hopefully these ladies can find a good home with you. I have sadly neglected them for far too long.
At church my wife tells me, lets BBQ today, invite the pastor and his family over for dinner. I say "okay" and immediately think "hide the boobies " then while I'm inviting him and his family she's inviting others. I don't mind grilling for a couple friends, but now were looking around 30 bratwurst, 20+ hotdogs for kids and burgers. It'll be fun but I hate smelling like a BBQ pit a few hours later.
Well I guess church is keeping me from the sinful slaaneshi demons after all
the thing is it works for everybody? every body invites everybody for BBQ and thus all are equal?...or not?...otherwise it could be a bit unfair... or do the guests bring stuff with them too?...
@vik, we do a "pot bless", everyone brings some sort of side dish or salad, we supplied the main meal, chips and drinks.
@graven, god has more to mock me for than my idolatrous femmes
Everyone just left, one family needed to get home because dad works nights, and the pastor needs to get ready for their shindig tomorrow. I am worn out from grilling , and look like I have a bad paintjob trying to show a sunburn. Now to unwind for a bit then .
and I remember working behind the butchers counter... I smelled of fish, cheese and well...dunno if you chaps know how fresh meats clings to your clothes and hair... all the dogs in the city were my friends...
pot bless... now there is a term I never heard of... but when we throw a party it is essentially like that too...

Yes but why did you still smell the same at the weekend Vik
Well don't forget the bacon shaving cream, bacon tooth paste and
Spoiler:
bacon lubricant
to really help the stereotypical man to be more like a pig .
Vik, that reminds me of the old joke of tying a steak around a kids neck so a dog would play with them. Usually because the kids so boring or ugly no body else would . Normally I drink 6-8 liters (1.5-2 gallons of water a day), yesterday I forgot to drink extra because of being outside and standing over the grill, so I was wiped out last night after everyone left and we finished the cleanup. Fun time with lots of good laughs. Today's plans with the family home? Maybe clean out the garage, clean up the basement, hopefully nothing too exciting as I do work tonight. I still have to clean up from Saturday when the brother in law took a break from studying and came with us and then we all came back to our house. I got in a couple games of x-wing , didn't use the big ships, and he's still learning the basics of the game. That didn't stop him from mauling me he second game though. I talked him into trying elite interceptors and a bounty hunter against my three bwings and an xwing. First turn of combat his dice rolled nothing except critical hits and he took out the xwing and stripped a bwing of its shields before I got to return a shot, which he evaded. In the end I think I dealt him 2 damage against getting tabled. But unlike GW games usually here's no turn limits in xwing and you play till a preset gmail is up or more usually until one side is completely gone.
I'm at a crossroads now. There's interest from comradepanda to purchase the ladies so I'm stopping that project right now . But now I needs something to work on. I can go a few routes.
1. Marines (most likely scythes of the emperor) half yellow
2. Marines (of the Angry persuasion Viks suggestion) I like me some yellow 3. Mantic orcs, still yellow
4. Other suggestions
A lot of this rides on selling the ladies. Obviously I have plenty of marines around to mess with so I might do some converting in the mean time.
There could be a surprise in the mean time too though
6-8litres??? from a medical perspective I can´t belive this... I think then you would have washed out your body from every electrolyte you would have had inside...to survive you would need to spoon yourself some salt in beg heaps each day...
also...
either yellow mellow marines... or
work again on your servoskull marines...
@vik, good point, I'm at dinner at work now and just started my second liter since getting here 3hours ago. Maybe that's why I'm tired often and have been having cravings for chips and salty snacks.
@panda, yes, I've always wanted a full marine chapter and I'm only half way there @cam, well I'll surprise myself too. Really don't want to do more GW, but it's what I got. Plus Star Wars xwing is the only other game I play besides KOW, and I've got all the xwing ships out currently.
I have a cunning plan for the terrain competition, might actually join it .
Well looks like the ladies are going to a better home in short order, and will get a paintjob they deserve. Now onto other things.
I'm going to try some skin tones for a marine project. I've always liked the idea of the Salamanders, but couldn't justify painting the skin chaos black and giving them blood red eyes. Also I'd like to try and do something more Asian themed. So here is the start of skin painting a la marines.
Thinking of ordering these guys
But I've seen so many bad reviews of the casting quality from puppetswar that I'm leary.
Oh and if I did a Salamanders offshoot, I'd definitely have to buy this when it becomes available.
And I'm already thinking of bumping my creaturecaster kickstarter to include a dragon, probably the mountain dragon as a centerpiece.
Now to come up with an army concept to relate the dragons/salamanders and Asian theme. I'm currently leaning towards the Kappa. The kappa are Japanese mythological creatures that live in the water and are said to grab children and drown them in the rivers. They are believed to be based on the giant Japanese salamanders that are aquatic and actually are capable of grabbing small mammals and killing them in that way. Now I could see in the ancient times of some backwater deathworld of warhammer that the Salamanders decided to recruit from a water world where life is hard on the inhabitants and they keep their monastery hidden underneath the waves of the ocean and only take recruits from the heartiest fishermen/dockworkers/ divers that they find, dragging them underwater to "drown" and are never seen by their families again. The Kappa are a specialist army just like their proginators the Salamanders. They deal in Close quarter combat using specialized weapons (flames, meltas, grav guns).
Now to find some colors I can be happy with. If this turns out to b something I like then I think we will see an army develope. Which means my hundreds of unprinted marines may see color .
Edit: first attempts at faces
And another
Also instead of Japanese I could do plain old American and do a gator chapter swamp world, maybe make some rhino fanboat conversions .
Good head work Theo. The skin tone looks real enough, but not that Asian to me. Maybe a bit paler, with some more cream/yellow tint to it. (I'm no expert on skin painting though)
I really like the fluffy ideas you´re weaving here...the kappa is for me the right decision... I think those Asian back banners could be easily scratchbuild... poles, thin PC heat treatment and you´re set...
add the helmeted heads of puppet wars or other manufacturers and some katana like powersords...golden!
as for colours... following the fluff of yours, brighter blues and greens... for now...
those faces look very good... tho...better picture taking wouldn´t hurt^^
@vik, oh I want the whole models, not just the back mounted sashimonos.
@shasho, I've always liked the Salamanders, but just couldn't get over the skin and eyes.
The faces I did I stupidly painted the eyes black, I think I will instead go with a red, which will also link us back to the salamanders. There's some wicked 3rd party bits out there especially by spellcrow.com that I will probably pick up to build my army if I do this. And then there's also this guy
I would definitely field him against opponents with sticks up their bums about proxy models .
Either Kappa or Gators I'm thinking of using the fantasy lizard men army salamanders as counts as thunderfires.
@vik, if I did the puppetswar guys then i would have to say the death world is a backwater hole where outsiders are unwelcome. To the point of execution for being found. Only the royal family is even unaware of the outside world/cosmos.
@ monkeytroll, while it would be fun a d I could go all redneck with them (catchcan heads with the bandanas showing a rebel flag) I think it would be hard to give a real swamp gator wrestling feel to the minis.
I am leaning more towards the Japanese flavor army with the more I think of it. I'll have to kick the idea around a bit longer and get some full figs done up.
Is there an army you don have tucked somewhere? , your trailer must be like a genies lamp, regular size on the outside, but a hive ship could park in each of your twenty bathrooms inside without scratching a wall .

And thats coming from a guy that still conjures a new army every Thursday night from his magician hat and tells us he'd owened it for a millennia already...

I broke the first rule of hobby collecting, don't talk about the collection
Well I did prime some things this morning, probably won't be dry to paint today, but I'm off tomorrow . I did have a primed scout in a box so I figured I'd see how the colors would translate.
I went with three layers of green and then a heavy blue wash over the model. The cloth colors is actually three layers as well with agrax earth shade wash. I figure the accent color on the models will be blue to reminisce about the blue ocean of the home world, and to also tie in the mythology of the Kappa. The mythology claims that the Kappa have a hard turtle-like shell(power armor) stringy hair (sea weed), and that they have an indent on their head that holds water like a bowl (????). The story goes that the Kappa cannot stay out of the water for long times o the water dries up and they can become weak. Also the Kappa could be tricked into bowing and the water would spill out and they would become weak. While thinking of this I was wondering if I should make them more aquatic. The marines lungs are supposed to be able to breathe just about anything, so why not make them be water breathers? They have adapted over he centuries as specialized aquatic assault troops and spend so much time in the water that they actually have water tanks instead of air tanks. The oxygen is diffused into the water and their bodies breathe the water like a fish. There would be no actual side effect of them taking their helmets off, don't actually get weaker, but it is just not "normal" to them not to be in the water.
Reds will be used as kill markings and on some tubing and wires. Not sure about the brown color I have on the gun yet.
I like the fluff again that you are coming up with, the head actually looks rather good on a scout body...
Where I have my difficulties with is the current scheme...the first thought that struck me was: superhuman cadian...I think the beige is a bit too near to the standard cadia scheme with that green together...
The fishy theme is a very cool one and I would think you should work more towards that direction...so in the sea you either won't show up...meaning camo...or you totally fly some strong colours that tell everyone you mean business...maybe a strong orange? Also...I dunno about your freehand skills, but what about some lighter tones to make up some fishscales on the armour parts?I know there is a ccompany that currently makes some awesome stencil series...I think anarchy models?
Okay so the black is just a placeholder for now. I don't want to fall into the usual "bionic troops should be silver and black" so metals are going to be brass/bronze, still unsure of the body color, I'm leaning towards dark grey to be totally whacked against the brass/bronze. Also the dark grey would look like primed metal, and as these guys aren't to worried about their physical bodies I think an unfinished approach may be the route.
]
Other suggestions welcome too.
Old lizard men in previous photo are for testing scale ideas on.
I had an instant idea... very much apart from your original idea...it goes like this...
well these bionics... well if you have tool like pliers, or a crowbar... they always get painted in a bright red or something... well here is the plan... the bionics are in a way a tool...or tools rather as the bionics are all over... so they get coated in sturdy and thick paint, but it got into deep trouble and is in bad shape... so the bare metal shows through...and this is how I would paint them...but no stress on one color from my part here
also...thanks for having such a deep impact on this thread^^
and those lizards would have been a conversion choice I would have suggested eventually anyway...also the finns of skinks are idea for some conversion ideas... remember you talked about gills and stuff.... for special models you probably could add such details...
wasn´t there a chapter... a lost one that was being eradicated due to their ...well lost the name...
but this could be an alternative chapter instead of the salamander heritage...
sorry for trying to confuse you with yet more ideas^^
Great ideas from Vik as usual , I will definitely scalp some skinks for head crests or elbow fins.
I think the chapter you are talking about are The Black Dragons, a 21st founding chapter that I think are based on Salamander geneseed also. They have a malfunction of one of the organs in the marine buildup that causes an overproduction of bones. They get elbow spikes, some get horns or crests.I don't want these guys being 'tainted' like that, and no gills, they just breathe the water. Marine physiology has extras that allow stuff like that to work. They can filter toxic air and eat strong poisons. Any extra stuff will simply be extra bling on the armor, like the salamanders have scale of the lizard skin on their suits.
Also I think I might try a dark blue for the scouts cloth, like you said it would help hide them in the watery deep.
Bionic colors are staying brass/bronze, it's the armor that's going to get painted differently though. I did consider red, but then it'd start looking like khorne or dark mechanicus
´m only suggesting mate... I wouldn´t want to change your mind... that would ruin your originality! and that´s a gem I wouldn´t want to see go to waste!
and I am always cool with brass... it is a warm colour that looks instantly artisan...and steampunky too
and yes... that was the chapter... maybe I should tackle that idea one of these days... the fluff is calling out for me I think...geneseedrebbels...
also... I know you said you don´t want no muties... but if the salamanders could have black (real black) skin... why not have an aquatic marine chapter have a more blue hue of their skin...? I have a mental image of grand admiral thrawn of Star Wars in my mind...?
This talk of breathing water reminds me of The Abyss. Where they use an oxygenated liquid so that they can dive to the bottom of the abyss and not be crushed by the pressure.
There's an advantage for your water-breathing Marines.
To answer Theo's and others questions, while I do have sizeable forces of Tau/Orks/IG/SM/ CSM stand ins, and started but yet to finish a Necron collection, I do not have more than a Lelith Hesperax and Lictor model, so NO Eldar/Dark Eldar/Nids/daemons or the other sub races but I do have somewhere a old witchunter codex I intend to use stripped down rules for the Heavy armor Eisenkerns
I wrote a huge reply after waiting and trying multiple refreshes to even get pages open. It was full of my usual brilliant and pithy comments.
Anywho...
@shaso, I'd recommend using the grey knight codex for the eisenkern. Mini leviathans= dreadknights, big leviathans equal allied knight titans, Valkyrie= terminators
@Dr. H, that's exactly the scene I was thinking of when I was coming up with the idea. I just couldn't remember the movie name. There's fluff about a chaos marine chapter that lives underneath an ammonia sea that no other army can root out, so I was kind of going along those lines.
@Vik, I might try the blue skin approach, I'll give it a shot today, still so early on in the planning of this project. Plus I love to see what you could do with black dragons.
@comradepanda, did some searching last night about Kappas....really interesting stuff I hadn't known. Including the fact that they would reach up and pull people's livers out through their holes. It's believed this came about because bodies that are drowned cause the internals to swell and come out through there . I hope I don't drown...sounds unpleasant. But at least we'll have good posture with walking around with bowls full of water on our heads. "The Emperors prim and proper marines "
@cam, so hazardous our hazard stripes have hazard stripes.
I'm going to bust out som of my legend of the five rings stuff today to check what other ideas I can use for the Kappa.
Edit: so I tried skin with a blue wash then highlighted, here's the result. I couldn't get a better picture
@Shaso,True, but that's two new $50+ codex, and the taurox isn't as cool as a land raider proxy.
Waiting around for a plumber, the wife has a terrible habit of putting things down the drain/ garbage disposal that clog it all up. The house reeks right now and I have a bad headache from it. Spent an hour or more trying to clear the line, but its further down than what I can reach.
In the mean time I'll show this off.
no it doesn't mean I'm going to start taking meds that I probably should be taking.
I saw grimdork cut one of these dollar store pill boxes up into sections and make dumpsters out of them for deadzone. Seemed like a quick and simple scatter terrain piece.
nice idea... these dollar shop stores have lots of nice ideas... I got me some glass etui´s some years ago that were planned to be some scoutships for my airship...it never came to that tho... and they only took be back one € each...and are still on the shelf of shame...
the skin is very hard to decide... too blurry by far, but I think you´re heading in the right direction...
wouldn´t some pipecleaner stuff like something from P&G be of help for this problem?
The drain has some solid mess in it, I've gotten out some noodles, vegetables, and other stuff from her cleaning out the refridgerator. But it continues past the clean out point farther than I could reach and I don't want to throw chemicals down there since I've never had any luck with those. Plus it could back it up not the main line. I'd rather just get it rooted out because something had to start the issue.
I've told her a few times, but its always something you wouldn't expect to be a problem. Last time it was mixed vegetables, peas, corn, cut carrots and green beans. Once it was broccoli that was all chopped up. Always something stupid happening .
Still waiting on he plumber. Why do they give a two hour arrival window when they always show up in the last five minutes .
Well kids are getting off he bus now, tomorrows the last day of school, and only a half day at that.
well...I could understand that corn could do that especially in a mix... but broccoli??? that stuff is never a bother... even in my mouth it is easy chew^^
we have (counting this day) for days off work, fathers day today, tomorrow bridge day and then the regular weekend....*sigh*

Good Luck! When that happened here, the plumber had to roto down about 14 feet to clear whatever was clogging mine. All he did was hook a cordless drill up to a roto-snake and charged me $120 for it, so I bought one for the next time it happens.
I think here we have some regulations where you're in charge for a certain distance after the drain...so having that Roto snake keeps your costs for fees relatively at bay...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just had a short sit in the sun...looked to the sky and saw again my favorite color combo...: white clouds, clear blue sky and rich green leaves...that is probably the strongest and vibrant color scheme nature(read godfor some ) can oprovide...I instantly thought of your kappa...maybe of use?
@vik, Cool pic Vik , indeed a great color palette only rivaled by the views we have around here during fall with all the trees changing color.
@dave, I'm definitely considering buying the drain snake for next time. I have a small 6' one right now, but need something longer.
@shaso, taurox is worse than that @comrade, well better that quote than the gif of the guys mooning everyone , they enjoy school for the most part, I enjoy the regularity of a schedule.
Well I've run into a dilemma . I was so into the idea of "the Kappa" that I forgot that the salamander models I want have flames everywhere. I don't think I can pull that off with the colors or concept I had come up with. So the question is do I go full Salamander 30k, splinter group of salamanders (kappa), or go whole hog Japanese style army (puppetswar models and claim them as either the 2nd or 11th lost legion).
Salamanders: I really love he look of the upcoming Vulkan primarc figure, the other figures look good as well including their contemptor which I've seen previews of. Drawback is I don't play 30k or 40k, but then again I haven't played necromunda in years or used much of my terrain stuff either .
The Kappa: original concept, could turn out awesome, but then I'd be using mainly stock models, but I have most of them already. Still tinkering with their background info and home world concept. Right now I'm thinking of a water world with only a few islands that are inhabited by a low tech native people. The planet is and has been controlled by an adeptus mechanicus division for millennia, and the planet itself has been modified/ moved/ rotation changed by them. There is something sinister happening below the waves on the far side of the planet, where the inhabitants cannot venture to as they are still using sails and very limited steam power. Plus the mechanicus and the Kappa patrol the waves from below and sink any vessels that get to close. Basically the natives are on their side of the planet and have no knowledge o he others existence except for myth and legend. The few people (usually fishermen) who see something and survive getting back to their homes are considered crazy. The ruling aristocracy of the natives have technology (given to them by the Kappa), in return they are able to hold tournaments to recruit future marines.
Japanese style: the puppetswar stuff is sooooo cool looking, but I've seen many people having problems with their orders/models with bad casts and poor response from puppetswar.com. Also they are more expensive than GW figures, but I think they may be justifiable considering the look.
hmmm.... I today saw the update on statuesque miniatures... they have some chrome knights...counts as marinelike minis... as well there is anvil industries... which have also great looking minis...(especially their robots, which call to me quite often )...so there is a lot of good alternatives for you...
out of personnel taste I'd say stick with what you already have, and I bet it is already enough as well... the puppet wars stuff look too modern for an anachronistic touched army like you envision... (in my opinion...but here mindframes, experience and all that other fuzzy stuff that is so hard to share even with your better half is so hard to explain via the web ways...)
I think you have quite a strong lead already into the fluff... which I think is the groundwork already done... now you need to see on what canvas you can paint the image of your mind...a tough nut to crack, I feel your pain...
IF you still go full salamanders... well then here is my idea... a merger of kappa and salamanders... and it goes as follows...change subtly the medium of their residence... aka...water to sand...so that the salamanders are now sand dwellers...read living in caves and big complexes hidden in the desert... and not in the depths of the sea... the natives still cant pin point their existences and the use of big drill droppods would be possible...(I've toyed with that idea for my own marines...)
the downside would be you have to change also the colour scheme as blue and greens wouldn´t work... rather sandy colours would be needed...which COULD look boring...pfff...I think I am not much of any help here
Theophony wrote: Well I've run into a dilemma . I was so into the idea of "the Kappa" that I forgot that the salamander models I want have flames everywhere. Not being entirely familiar with the model range, some or all of what I am about to say may be pointless.
I'm assuming by everywhere, you mean moulded on to the model. You could file these off (I sure you can manage this) or replace the bits (like shoulder pads) with plain bits (or even with Blood Angels moulded pads, fill in the wings to look like fins and paint the drop as water...).
I'm not sure that full-on Japanese styled models will fit with the Kappa fluff. When I think of underwater Marines, I'm seeing things like steampunk or retro-futuristic spacemen style (bubble helmets and the like).
@chaoitc mind, thanks and welcome , definitely thought about trying to make them look like waves, but forgeworld has sculpted the flames as tall narrow flames and not short stubby ones that could easily be altered.
@Dr. H, I hadn't really thought of iconography yet, but would stay away from the droplet as that might make peeps think we're a blood angel successor.
Part of my idea for the water world came from snippets I remembered about Rifts:Japan, Legend of the 5 Rings (card and RPG), and my Asian homies . There's also another RPG game I had that I cannot think of the name right now, but it was on an alien planet ha was mostly water covered and there were nasty native wildlife, think Avatar movie underwater .
While rethinking ideas I retouched on an old one. Desert world descendants of the Salamanders, no name yet, but horny toads is on a short list . Thinking more browns and orange colors. This could work out with my pledge for creaturecaster if I can up my pledge to a mountain dragon instead of the demon.
The other sculpted goodies that affect the Kappa is the dragon head doesn't match up either with the kappa descriptions. Where I could have the desert dragons( not final name) use any Salamanders designs including stickers and pads. Plus the dragon could be fielded as a Stormraven, fire raptor, or possibly a thunderhawk .
@comrade, flaming turtles sounds more eldar than anything.
@vik, no culinary snobbery will be allowed here , if turtle soup is okay then turtle flambé is also approved.
@shaso, it wasn't unnecessary for their bottom line
Everything's on hold for now.
I must get an idea that sticks with me and I can go full into it. So far I've had too many ideas and they are all in different directions.
Latest idea for the Japanese mythology was using Dark eldar last night. Scourges=Tengu, so many options for ninjas and oni. I'm in the start of my 6day straight at work and they have asked me to work Thursday as well which would mean 8days , and next weekend is looking booked. Plus the kids are out of school now.
Continue o hit me with ideas. Comrade told m to do an eldar wraith army using the new tree men as the wraithknights. I think it has merit, but I don't like those models, but I like the ultraforge treewoman, and the creaturecaster treewoman. Add a bunch if dryads......could work
If turtle soup is okay, how about going with the soup dragons?
Clanger guard....surely that's a thing?
Might be some merit in combining the kappa and the sand dragons....different companies specialising in different styles of warfare perhaps....underwater, desert, aerial/jump, stealth...got to be some mileage to come out of Eastern folklore there.....
@cam, good idea with the seaweed @monkeytroll, soup dragons . Their war chant can be "Soups on Beetches!" (Totally hearing that in Jessie's voice from breaking bad)
So first order of business today was praying the house for bugs again. Sprin has been here, but the rain is starting o send he spiders inside . While I enjoy wildlife and my wife shrieking like a little girl , I get annoyed when it happens when I'm dead asleep and she wakes me up to kill a spider in the bathroom. So my son got the full lesson on spraying the house for bugs, including the extra of not spraying his sisters even though they bug him.
While he sprayed the basement I spray primed the cut up pillbox that I showed a little while ago(idea from grimdork).
While waiting for that to dry I cleaned some of he gaming area and Zack cleaned up the Lego mountain and cars.
Finally before I get ready for work, I tossed some paint, the primer was still wet, but I think it helped blend the colors well.
Oh and the tree service guy just showed up to quote out cutting down a huge tree in the back yard. $1400.00, $1670.00 if I want the stump ground down. More than I was expecting, I'll definitely will get some other quotes, but it will bring. Smile to my face to see all those little squirrels be homeless . I would enjoy it only more if it was right before winter hit.
If I do the tree army then I'm getting both the creaturecaster treewoman, and the ultra forge treewoman, oodles of dryads and I'll figure some other stuff out for it as well.
As for tag lines for a treewoman army....."man I have to tell her to trim that bush "
Well the main army only uses nailguns, but this will be a splinter force led by willow. They aren't branching out of their own tree will, they were asked to leaf. When they asked what they did wrong, he replied "I'm tired of you barking up the wrong tree" so they kicked him in the twig and two berries and packed their trunks. You see the root of the matter sprouted from the fact that his limbs were too small to hold the cradle in a stiff wind. Now willow can stop weeping as she will likely get the house in the divorce. Some think she is a real birch, others think she's a fruit, but I think they are all nuts. If your still reading at this point I feel sorry for you . I can't tell you mulch more of the situation. It seams they might get back together after all. Seems they are both sappy.
The End.......or is it .
Edit: stopped by miniaturemarket today totally intent on buying the wood elf forest kit that has three freemen and 36 dryads. They were out of stock of everything wood elf . I'm actually glad as I looked at the pics of the treeman again and I just don't like it .
Well so I took the next route while there
All were clearance. The ninja boardgame I got for $20, it has 25 minis in it that I wanted to see about building a samurai army for KoW since I'm on my Asian kick again.
There's 10 monopose plastic samurai drawing their swords in their pajamas There's 10 monopose samurai with yuri in armor
3 drunk samurai in pajamas And two ninja, one is red and other is black.
Turns out less than a $1 a fig, but they are monopose, great for forming up units, not so great for style though.
Also got two boxes of L5R cards with the Mon for the scorpion clan and the lion clan (my two favored factions in the game)
Last but not least
Sedition wars. Okay I've heard all the about how bad the game is and everyone complain about the models, but $39.00 There are 45 25mm custom bases and 5 60mm bases in the box. True the 25mm ones there's only 5 flavors of them, but they are starship textured, and the colored red and blue chips in the picture snap on and off the bottom of them. You can even stack a red and a blue or multiple of one color. These could be great for games like Necromunda with denoting pinning, over watch, or other specials like carrying loot. The large bases are all one print on top and don't have the cool rings that snap on, but come on with this price .
Plus you get figures for all the bases.
I didn't get to mess with the figures that much, but they seem pretty decent to me, I'll look more tomorrow. But I figure for the price I could use the strain guys as counts as tyranids, or even possibly nurgle, so I might pick up a few boxes at this price. Like I said though $39 for 50 minis and 50 custom bases is a good deal to me.
Now I need to check out the dead zone rules because these might work for that game as well. I could wind up with a cheap army to cross multiple systems .
I think the wooden army will not happen, especially if I like these strain guys. Neat idea and two awesome centerpieces, but I'm getting away from GW as a new rules set, eldar army book and iyadin army book =$185.00
LOL... that lil wooden story made my day... and ruined it too in the same instant as it totally drew me away from my school duties as I was searching for a fitting response... and failed...argh... that´s what you native English speakers are at least one step up front....
the buy looks huge....holy....well the ninja game I don´t get... looks a bit like a failed buy to me...all these monopose minis...
but the sedition wars buy look more than decent to me...especially for the huge amount of bases... that is a winner for sure!
I just had a tree service guy give me a quote for $7000 for removing 3 large trees, but he offered a 25% discount, so $5000. ( I said nothing about his math skills.) Finally found one for $2100. It pays to get multiple quotes. And the price is lower if you keep the wood, ie no haul-away, except maybe the brush that goes into the chipper. They can use the mulch or sell it. That must be a big tree and needs a lot of rope work for that price.
Sounds a productive day, got to say quote for tree is WOW. Get a chainsaw dude.
It won't help him. I have a chainsaw, Cam. But these larger trees in residential areas, you just can't cut them down willy-nilly, unless you like the sounds of trees crashing through roofs... and power lines... Dangerous work too.
A friend of mine who I was living with at the time, had a tree in his back garden that he decided should be a little shorter. It was a fir tree, about the height of the house (that's two stories and the roof).
It wasn't possible to climb the tree as it was (too dense), so I cut a path up it, tied a rope about 5 foot from the top, and then cut a wedge in one side of the trunk with an axe (about 10 foot down) and then cut part way into the other side with a saw. One tug of the rope and the top 10 foot of tree landed exactly where I had aimed it. I had a very smug look on my face at that point.
@cam, it is a two edged sword. Even though I get 20% off most stuff it's cheaper to go online and order it far away(out of state so I don't pay sales tax), but for clearance and impulse buys it's great/deadly if the wife finds out @vik, German might be a Romance language (Latin root dialect), but I never saw much poetry when I studied it.
@red, nail in the head about the tree. It has power lines going through it, probably as old as our house 70+years, and it hangs over our back patio and my sons room along with our neighbors carport and another neighbors koi pond and another neighbors shed.
The ninja game was just a purchase to check the feasibility of making a samurai KOW army on the cheap. But like all L5R products it has an actual storyline in it that is a good read. It's one of the things that kept me hooked with the ccg game as the major tournaments actually determined the storylines of the next card set. I haven't looked at the gameplay but it looks pretty simple, there are six objectives (randomly determined before the game for the ninja and the lion clan doesn't know which he gets. He starts with x sentries and moves them around the house on patrol. The ninja player has abscond map that he resolves his movement on and each turn they must see if they overlap. If it does then they each have actions they can do to raise the alarm, kill a guard or spike their sake.
Still don't think I'll do the treewoman army. But I did pick out names if I did . The first treewoman will be named "Maple", not only because of her species, but because everyone wants to tap that . The other will be called Asshley, because she's a fine piece of assh
Automatically Appended Next Post: @dr.h, we keep posting at the same time ,
The tree is about 45' tall and there's fences on two sides and thick branches, so I ain't trying that. But I've done it before on other trees.
no wood problems here we don't joke about that. Smiling bob has nothing on me
Totally mind numbing night for the second in a row. So that's a mixed blessing/curse as my brain tries to keep me mentally stimulated and comes up with ideas. I wish I had paper near me for half if the stuff I came up with, but I didn't so some miracles are lost forever. Let's just say another army idea that was mulled over a while ago might be in full swing shortly. I just need to find the right bits for it, I'll take my son with me to the store again tomorrow and I'll check ebay tonight when I get home.
honestly theo...I know I've mentioned a few times you should start angry marines... but well forget about that, what you really need to start is orks... you need an army to have a sincere comical base... something that helps you roll with the punches lives throws at you... and I can´t think of anyone else where that idea would totally fit the bill.. you just need a fitting joyous theme...
oh....and Dr.H...."he´s a lumberjack and he´s ok..."
also...just to raise the flag for peeps I still have no strong ties with...germans do have great poem writers..tho for the love of it... none will come to my mind atm^^
@graven, are you sure about the root of German language? Because when I took it 20+ years ago I was also taking French and iirc the way they congigate, sentence structure, and even most of the root words were the same. My teachers also said they were from the same root, but I did go to public schools soooooooo . Yes and I need medicine for my ADHD.
@vik, not going Ork. I even gave away all my Ork stuff a while back. Is till have the gorkamorka books and the buildings from the set somewhere, but I just can't pull off the eclectic paint job. My Ork bloodbowl and mantic Orc army will have to do for now.
Oh and it's not angry marines I'm building, but it is comical. It has also caused me to start carrying a notepad with me again . So many ideas have sprung off of this concept now. Oh and I actually mentioned it to one of the guys at work, they now understand exactly how crazy I really am.
I assembled and primed some if the sedition wars minis last night. Big gaps on some of the models and the pour channels are in bad spots when you put two pieces together, but all in all a really neat set. If I don't find what index at the store this morning then I might get to throw some paint on the beasts.
Edit: there comes a point when you know you need help....I think I'm there, call the people with the straight jackets, make sure they have one in 2xl.
Spoiler:
so this is what I was thinking of last night at work. I was originally going to do a peanut army led by Mr. Planter peanut himself, but then I challenged everyone to make a silly army based on bar snacks/ condiments and had no takers. Last night devolved into creating multiple factions in my head and coming up with names. Then I started thinking of game mechanics .
Well here's the first two prototypes of the faction of the cherries.
Unknown/unnamed cherry with pike, and the karate kid himself Ralph Marachino .
Soon they will be joined by other great cherry personalities such as Cherry Lewis, Bing Crosby and of course Shirley Temple. Their faction controls the church in the town where all the armies will come from. Theirs is a fanatic group, prone to crazy acts of violence which the epitome of are the suicidal cherry bombers which Ralph is a unit upgrade to. They throw themselves headlong into the fray before their pits explode due to the chemical stimulants they use (the juice).
This is just a temporary mock up. The wire I had is too thin I will get thicker wire for the arms and legs which will get painted black. In the end it will look similar to the California raisins of yesteryear. I'll have to figure out feet and hands at some point too.
The indo-european language family includes 13 (usually) broad language groups, including Germanic languages (split further into North (Nordic languages), East (Gothic amongst others, all extinct except possibly Uralic), and West which further split into High (German, Austrian, et al) and Low (Dutch, English, Fresian). The language group probably orginated with the Steppe peoples in what is now Turkmenistan around 8000 years ago. Proto-Germanic is hard to pinpoint but probably separates around 6000 years ago.
Other early branchings (and probably the first to do so) include Italo-Celtic, separating further into the Celtic languages and what's now the languages derived from Latin (French, Spanish, Italian etc.) - if you want a natty piece of evidence, the Roman name for Scotland was Hibernia, and of course Spain/Portugal are the Iberian peninsula. The northern Indian languages and Romany would be examples of a couple of other subfamilies.
There are some structural similarities across the languages - they're mostly synthetic languages (endings) as opposed to analytic (word order - as English is).
This is what happens when you ask a question of a teacher with a Masters degree in Linguistics and a specialty in Germanic Philology (and Speech Organo-Physics, but that's another matter)
I knew somewhere out there we had a language nerd here somewhere, much less in the league. I bow to your wisdom sir.
Well I started messing around with paint on the sedition wars guys. The first up was Grendel, one of the most advanced forms of the strain.
He'd like to give you a smooch
Big muscles
Back armor reminds me of a crocodile.
Still a lot of work to do, missed a bunch of armor plates and hoses so I need to go back and hit those. I'm starting from a white base so I'm covering those with a thin white layer now and Wil paint over them again shortly/tomorrow.
oh... that mini looks very good actually... I actually get an armadillo vibe from him...(check your local marvel supplier for further questions)
the scheme looks very horror movie... doom, or ...er...cant place it atm... but I like it...
I don´t think you need to be in a straight jacket...yet... but honestly... you are not thinking this big and wide enough... if you want to start popping cherries....well why not take a big banana....(see what I did there...)
the ralph machio er ... maraschino is a splendid idea...lol...and I now the pain of making up a fitting idea for multiple little hands... if the scale allows it... you could look for holepunched hand shapes... this way they would get hands like old mickey mouse...if that is to your taste tho...
and I understand your decision about orks.. I think I am currently leaning myself way too much out of my own window so to say with my recent buys of green skins... I need to take a pic of what I hunter gathered recently... gorka morka and RT stuff galore... and even zillions of grots...oh my...
at graven.. I actually knew all that stuff in essence too... we had a school course concerning this matter... and etymology was always something I liked... so I will put that information about you in the back of my brain for later use...I am sure I will come back to that one of these days... cool
@shaso, yeah, but my liquid green stuff was hard as a rock @vik, the comic book called 'Virus' by dark horse is I think the start of this concept. Also I got a ton of ideas for your olive guys if you ever do them. I almost bought some beads at the store today to make a few myself
Somehow the last pic of the beast didn't take, so here he is....
Oh and I had a banana in my hand at the store to vik , it was going to be their ship a banana boat.
