Viktor von Domm wrote: for us English educated germans dutch is not that hard to understand if the person in front of me speaks slow...
Uh-Oh. That reminds me of something said of English. "Everybody understands English, if you speak it slowly enough and loudly enough." Dutch have some odd (to my eyes) spellings, but once you get past that, you can easily detect the relationship to it and English. (Ik spreek goed Engels, Ja?) Our "I" used to be "Ic" (c as k).
I know it sounds almost degrading as if a whole language is just a mere dialect..but it wasn´t meant that way... I even had quite a bit of success understanding other Nordic languages like Swedish and Norwegian... to a very limited amount tho...
Well I'm one step closer. Comradepanda got the deamonettes last week and I got the funds available now. The hard part is do I start building my 30k salamanders list, the dread posted earlier is not on the site yet, or studio mcvey just released new strain models today, one already sold out .
Edit: did some painting this morning. Really liking this metal like formula. And if I continue with more layers I get black . Okay so in my lifetime I've been wanting to build every army for every game. But I think I keep falling back into realizing I'm not playing the games so I lose out on the desire to finish things . So that's why I have my army hopping dilemma. That's why when I tried the new paint skill to a marine I thought...."wow, I could do iron hands "......"or I could do iron warriors" or "ravenguard.....wait I've had no desire to do the dark chickens"
So do I just give up on building an army?
Or do I just build some kill teams?
Or just paint what I want at the time?
Well this is what caused the dilemma
His little chin beard was an accidental flick of the brush which I think I'll keep .
The armor plates on the beasts is about the color of what I'd do the iron warriors in. And I could use them as spawn, obliterators, or maulers.
oh and I got the metallic scheme by stealing from Damo . He mentioned how he did the black on his ferrus manus and I tried it out, I got the metallic look by accident and have run with it.
For now a short answer...kill. teams and inquisimunda...that could help you with getting a decent target to which you could aim your overflowing hobby mojo...
Will have to take a closer look at the pc to see the metal(currently via phone...)
Yeah, I'm with vik - kill teams and inquisimunda warbands are where it's at for scratching a whole shed load of P&M itches
Nice work on those guys. The dark metal look great. I picked up a couple of the more serpentine Strain recently as they have a look that fits with various bits of my slaaneshi forces, but seeing those makes me want more...I see lots of possibilities with those
Theo, I got the Gale force 9 gray stuff, you cut a piece from the black stuff, and the pale gray and mix when needed, I never figured "Liquid" green stuff would ever stay so in a GW paint pot, they are why I have gone to squeeze bottle paints.
@shaso, I have regular greenstuff too, just not very good at the whole putty thing. I should practice with it.
@cam, thanks, means lot to hear that @comrade, I do blame you for being my current enabler, but these other guys keep egging me on also, there's enough blame to go around though. @MT, I need to check out he rest of his line, honestly I thought it died after the set went but post kickstarter.
@Vik, the metals on the iron hand are actually just greys, but the black on him is the layered inks/washes.
Well I might just pitch most of my paints and paint with washes from now on , it seems to work really well with highly detailed models, and decent on GW models too .
My kids were off yesterday and the pool party was canceled due to sickness of the host, so one of their friends came over to play and sleep overnight. Girl sleepovers mean cranky kids and parents the next day because they don't sleep , I vote for a title change to "stay over and gab all night and make sure the father is pissy all day event" they woke us up at 5am on my one good night a week to get sleep because the wife is off on Fridays in the summer and I'm off Thursday nights. Well I quieted them down enough for the wife to sleep in, but I was up so started the next model.
He's a fun guy to paint, glad there's multiples of him in the box. If I build up my iron warriors then the strain can be the obliterators techno virus infecting ratings and use them as cultists. These bigger guys can be the heavy weapons in the group. And the other two guys I previously made can be the obliterators and maulers.
Loving the blue contrast, looks great Theo. I didn't know you could paint, when did this happen? Great idea for the usage later on, seriously would like these guys for the same kinda reasoning.
oh.... that one looks to me like something out of a resident evil game/movie...*shudders* ...somehow I never even toyed with a chaos army...(well thousand sons and iron warriors don´t count as they still basically look like loyal SM...)
if you have kids as guests... how much authority are you inflicting on your guests (crappy way off trying to get my meaning translated here...) ? sounds interesting ...from a professional point of view for me and also as a fellow dad point of view...when we have kids guests the kids get treated like my kids too... so they see my usual grumpy side as well...and I think they all liked it here still and come back from time to time...tho I have to say we have not so often guests... (not that I want them too often here mind you )
kids today often are not used to consequences...which is really surprising to me...?!?...in my theory parents are often nowadays afraid that there kids might stop loving their parents...which is bloody stupid as a kid, regardless of how it is treated has only one option and that is to love their parents ...(for good and for bad...) (sorry for the slight rant...)
^ I Am with you all the way on this. We're very lucky that in our group of kids/parents that everyone is ok with telling off any kid that's misbehaving. Equally, all the kids really like all the parents (which means everyone gets a break now and again!)
Great colours on the minis theo, reminds me of what Minus does. Looks cracking,
@cam, it's the models, after 300 marines you just stop caring(most people it's 10 and done)
@vik, graven, the girl is a daughter of one of the elders at our church (not eldar ). So she is pretty well behaved like our kids. She gets to see all the ugly side of me, but most often when I need to correct someone I correct my kids and the other kid sees it and realizes what's happening is not acceptable in our house. They are good enough friends that they see our kids get in trouble and then they stop what they are doing and play nice (most of the time they apologize too).
Really rough night at work, just getting done with dinner. Almost 30 discharges so far(double usual night) and I have the known "b" crew. Oh I'm in charge again tonight, and the people I can usually ask for help are on vacation.
Plus side is, I'm off this weekend with no plans except some yard work.
@dsteingass, he lives , unless the weed walker got him today . Hope everyone is on the mend.
@shaso, I haven't even read through the book as I am just a figure junkie, but I think the virus does indeed infect people and convert them.
@dr. H, I'm not here to learn photography, but I guess eventually I will learn it. And thanks on the paintjob
Nothing to show today. I got to sleep in, last night was wicked. Just got off the phone with one of the bosses a few minutes ago. They were fine with the job done, they knew last night was ugly, but there was some other things that occurred that I wasn't part of but notified them about. Basically another employee has a beef with them and went to HR. he filed a grievance and filled out paperwork, which he left on the desk in the office. Of at least someone left a copy of it on the desk in the office where everyone lose saw it . I found it when collecting the paperwork for the end of the shift and locked it up with the rest. Just not a good thing to be laying around for public reading.
Lots of yard work done today. Missed out on an eBay buy that would cement my next project, but I'll keep an eye out for more. Tonight is family movie night so probably very little to see tonight either. Hopefully Monday I can get back into things as tomorrow is looking full as well.
Barely...I'm going to be so sore tomorrow (I already am). I trimmed and boxed all the 7' tall bushes around the property, cleaned up and mowed. Took all day.
@shaso, too true
@dave, 1:1 conversions suck don't they
Well got about an hour to paint, might steal some time later to do more. But here's four strains, same model
The darker one has had a second wash, and you've seen the guy in back previously, just there for size.
@shaso,I think they're supposed to be exposed workers as the game the strain generate infection points and your humans can become infected. At least from the little I've read.
Okay so I need some advice again. I'm really leaning on building a Horus Hersey army. I do g have the rule book as it's crazy expensive to get from forgeworld, and I'll probably never play. What I'm leaning towards is my iron warriors getting some love. But as they don't have models specifically for them I'm thinking of using the iron hands figures and removing just the hand emblem. Do you guys think the iron warriors could still use the crenelated edge banding that's still on the iron hands. I mean they were also close to the mechanicus, and tons of bionics everywhere as perturbo would send his men into the meat grinder and just not care about the outcome.
Edit: one should never go through their bits box when they are "almost" ready to choose an army. Found this nurgle sorcerer who looks true scaled next to the strain models. And I have my mordheim town cryer model in my "most precious" box. I love the blight drones look and the Hersey era deathguard scheme....
Well I could still use the larger strain beasts as.....beasts of nurgle, just nurgle getting more bionic in the 32k, or 40k universe. Plus I can still alter my creaturecaster pledge and get the plague angel, and maggot demons. I'll look into it today .
@comradepanda, yes, they are rather cool. It's the one thing that keeps bringing me back to 40k, even if only to the bleachers, the background and concepts.
Well just backed the kickstarter for some bloodbowl models. They had a 40mm samurai oni, and a hot looking bar wentch . Might add a little more, but the models aren't the best and it's really just to get the funds for remolding.
Woke up to a water main break and no water in the house , have laundry to do and need a shower before work later. They say the water will be back on in a couple hours, it's just one of those first world problems of taking something for granted.
Primed a whole load of figs yesterday, pics to follow shortly. Might take the kids out and about for a while, possibly by miniaturemarket .
Oh and chicagoairbrushsupply.com (where I got my compressor) is having a Father's Day sale this week. 11%off of most bundles and paints and stuff. Code for discount is FD11
Come on boys lets show these imperial dogs what for!
Since you have your eyes out on Asian models...ever looked into ramshackle games? The have some reasonable prized tall Japanese looking robots...could be interesting for you...
And about that first world dilemma...whenever our water heating gets down I am a barbaric again too...I would then rather stay smelly at home then set a single pinky outside...without a shower in the morning I am nit even half the man I am used to be...
Muhahaha...a Perry army...my kids would be all over the place I have no doubt...
The oni mini reminds me of a bass guitarist...slamming and jamming...
The bar/beer maiden look very hot in the concept...but in the render appears a bit brittle...
The elephant ...wtf ???
And not many peeps could be that forgetful about a titan stashed away for rainy days...
@shaso, that's where I got it from, and getting another 1 or two....or three later
@vik, totally forgot about perry the platypus, I could totally see making them in those colors and creating one in a trentchcoat . And I guess the elephant is supposed to be the trolls on the goblin team. But last I heard there weren't elephants native to Austrailia.
Well I didn't want to mess up the paint scheme I had so far on the strain models I had done, but wanted to see if I could make it more iron warrior ish. Also was concerned about having too much color. Still touching up the skin in spots where the wash ran over. I'm thinking more of these guys to act as obliterators in the army.
Still need to pick out their eyes, teeth and finish up the flesh fixes.
I always liked the idea of the iron warriors binding demons with cybernetics to control them, I think these really bring that idea home.
In and out today, have a few contractors coming over to give bids on some masonry work. Hopefully get to run out in between.
Edit: had a little time, started the next obliterator, was doing metals first and thought......oooooooo albino , won't stay that way, but just looked cool to start.
these strain models (?) look very mean... a mixture of a biovore and some chaos stuff...I think for exactly that reason you certainly chosen the right scheme...
but it isn´t finished...something is still missing...probably the right amount of bare metal...
Vik, I'm actually going to use the scales color there as my metals for he iron warriors. Trying something slightly different than just paint silver and add hazard stripes. No crazy spikes or mutations, more of a traditional marine sort of build with the strain models being (rejects from geneseed implanting, bio test subjects, and beasts lashed into service) constructs of war.
Ordered the Deadzone rule book and nexus prime expansion books today, will pick them up at miniaturemarket tomorrow. I didn't get the box set as I have so many necromunda bulkheads that I will try the rules that way first.
In other news if the weather is nice tomorrow the kids and I are going to have a nerf war either outside or at a nearby park. It's been raining so much lately and they need some outside time with daddy.
Cool beans! books are a brargain! I do want the buildings and minis fromn Deadzone strain and other minis sound good, I would have to read the sedition wars rules to get an idea if they are awful or not.
@shaso, miniaturemarket s a better deal for you because you don't pay taxes (out of state) and free shipping if over $???. I'd be better getting most of my stuff through thewarstore.com, but I'm impatient, and some deals are too good, like the sedition wars stuff.
@vik, I like eBay, but its hit and miss, plus I shop he real bargains at MM. Got all my mantic Orc stuff there for less than kickstarter prices while they were clearancing them out.
@cam, thanks , they are great models that really paint themselves for the most part. Lots of cleanup with mold lines, but I'm not going for golden demon quality, just tabletop.
Well , the new primer messed up. I should have figured because I shook the can for three minutes before the little ball even began to rattle in the can. Luckily it only messed up one figure, too bad it's my forgeworld nurgle sorcerer . He'll get stripped soon and I can get another can of primer somewhere else.
Dakka was being weird earlier, my last post I wrote three separate times and it still isn't showing the pics I had attached. So here's what I painted earlier today.
He's no longer an albino, but he is looking good to my eyes.
Also the loot from earlier
Now that I have two sets of sedition wars, I can use the accompanying tiles that come inside the sets and do bigger layouts and show both sides. There are (???) 5 double sided boards I think, each are approximately 1'x1' so that's a good sized table.
I've got some decisions to make on my next purchases. Probably a third set of sedition wars, that I'll net me a third mauler (alligator looking strain, and obliterators number 5+6. I can also use the phase 5 strains to be dreadnoughts or at least robots used by the iron warriors.
So decided to look at what I had done previously with iron warriors and have them next to the sedition wars stuff.
Leviathan mortis has had a few colors tossed on him, but I'm not happy with how those are progressing .
Rabble ratings from sedition wars. Led by siege lord wielding the dark mace of Sauron . Demon lord spiky junk, dreadnought (contemptor) Titus, and spider tank/vindicator "Fred".
All three of whom were made with the bodies of khorne juggernaughts, sentinel legs and assorted bits....and magnets. I was especially happy with Titus. Terrible picture I know . But he has a chain fist (close combat arm) which has a magnetized heavy flamer and I think a plasma cannon(lost in the warp currently). The other arm is a dual autocannon which is also magnetized. Never got around to the other weapons. I just like the styling of the robotic body on him. And the pose he's in looks like an angry swagger as he's advancing.
Also accompanying him is the demon lord "Spiky Junk". Named for all the spiky growths between his legs. He is a close combat beast with jump pack/wings, I wanted a demon lord who fit the iron warriors idea of bionics and brutality.
Lastly is the spider tank "Fred", who is about a 1:1 scale representation of the tarantula that greeted me the first morning I woke up in Nicaragua a few years ago. Luckily it was one of my room mates that got up and showered first and located him in the shower.
His front legs, the two short ones with smoke launchers on them have magnets to hold alternate weapons(also lost in the warp).
Thanks guys @comrade, they are from a while back during a conversion kick. I want to make more dreads though.
@Cam, he's one of my favorites that I made over the years. The juggernaughts are just so nice of a design, just like the sentinel legs.
Also I don't think I showed off my Gator-Mauler yet, at least since he's joined the iron warriors. Hopefully there's enough but not too much on him.
@Dr. H, thanks, everyone loves alligators @shaso, thanks man
So tried painting deathguard sorcerer even though the primer messed up. Still not close to done yet, but here goes.
He looks like he's yelling at comradepanda's emperors children marines " you emperors children for wiping your cheeto hands on my nice cape "
Tried to freehand the biohazard symbol on the loincloth. The cloth is so tattered and torn that it doesn't matter how bad it is it almost looks genuine . I originally chose the orange to go with the strain figure pants to see how they look together, and did the skin tones the same. I think he looks good with his cultist followers.
I must say I am very impressed by your painting skills mate!
the gator mauler alone looks splendid... and now that sorcerer is promising as well!!!!
also... again...many thanks for that care package back then... I now really can appreciate for the first time these cool magnets of yours!!! big thank you mate for these !!!
@vik, no problem brother . I'm glad you got to use them.
@comrade, yes more dreads are needed , and more weapon mounts for them as well.
@shaso, I haven't even opened the DZ rulebook yet, but hats what I was thinking as well.
Well work was a bit tense today. I've mentioned hem giving me the supervisory position as a backup for vacations and sicknesses, and Saturday I ran my fourth shift as the supervisor. Now I've worked 40 hours a week since I was 8 years old at our family business. Last year while I was unemployed was the only time I haven't worked at least that, and for the last 13 or so I've been in management running small businesses all he way up to running a 39million dollar a year store so managements nothing new. Saturday however three of the ladies working under me (crew of seven total that night), kept playing games seeing how far hey could push me. The 3 of them took 35 minutes to get heir stuff ready and leave storeroom (5 minute job), 2 of them went to the third floor and hung out for another 15 minutes and didn't see me watching and timing them. Then those same two stole an extra 20 after clocking in from lunch and hung out in the main lobby ( once again didn't see me standing 20' away cleaning up a spill ), but hen hey saw me they ran into the women's restroom to hide, but I was staring right at them hen they saw me . It went on and on all night long. Well tonight all four of us were working and he big boss brought hem each into the office, lots o tears later I now have three coworkers that want me dead, one of which is on a final notice. I'm usually easy to get along with, just don try an play me . Boss told me i Handled everything right, duh, I've go more experience than he does, but to keep my nose clean because they are vindictive. No problem here , the mess with me now and its retaliation plain and simple, goodbye o heir jobs if I happens.
In other news I have Thursday-Sunday off and were taking h family for just a single night out of town. Looking like we may head to Hannibal MO. couple hours drive from here, lots to see and do there. Also Sunday is my aunts 60th jubilation. Jubilation, what's that? It's like an anniversary for being in the Catholic Church. She has been a nun for 60years and still going strong pushing 80 years old. I'm very proud of her and her service, even though I keep asking her when she's going to kick the habit . Lots o relatives flying in for the party including one my other aunts that I've only seen 7 or 8 times in my life, and I turn 40 in a couple weeks.
Lots o do the next couple of days and then I'll be out of contact this weekend, so try and be good till I get back
watch your back mate... that sounds as if you work at a snakes den...have worked with such female workers like these before...and here the ancient idiom duck and cover is the best strategy... in my view if you wait long enough they tear themselves apart in due time...(thunderdome )
and do I get it right here... you´re an evangelic Christian and your aunt is a catholic?...
and kicking the habit... I guess she does that each evening after before the shower
Well, the 3 stooges lost that round. Next round is caged death match sponsored by the hospital. Chain saws included. Panda has VIP tickets. I get a set for Vik too. Odds are 4:1 you are the favorite, simply because you asked for a straight jacket.
@vik, thanks, I have all four of my eyes peeled , and my bosses are prepared too. They know what type of work I do so I just need to keep my nose clean (picking it right now), and they will back me up. Plus they've been n trouble before fore the same reasons.
@comrade, I still have hobby time in the early am before we leave, like this morning.
So I was in a stripey mood this morning. Also my old standard iron warriors color scheme seems to be winning me back. The newer method looks good on the organics, but the hard metals are crying for bolt gun metal/leadbelcher.
And the new gator-mauler delivery system . Because what's scarier than a resentful giant cybernetic demonic gator.....a resentful flying giant cybernetic demonic gator backed up with a knight Titan.
One liter bottle for scale reference.
Thinking of writing the "unbreakable litany" (iron warriors creedo) in the black area of the shoulder pad. It goes like this
From Iron, cometh Strength. From Strength, cometh Will. From Will, cometh Faith. From Faith, cometh Honour. From Honour, cometh Iron. This is the Unbreakable Litany, and may it forever be so
Either that or try and get the iron warrior helmet there, I could do one on one shoulder and the other on the opposing shoulder. Any suggestions either way?
From Iron, cometh Strength. From Strength, cometh Will. From Will, cometh Faith. From Faith, cometh Honour. From Honour, cometh Iron. This is the Unbreakable Litany, and may it forever be so
They've not talked to any chemists have they...
Nice stripyness. Good job.
A large area like that is ideal for the writing. You won't get many other chances at this scale to do it.
@monkeytroll, thanks, just wait till you see stripey wolverine claws/katanas @Dr. H, no they obviously didn't, but I'm not arguing with perturbo
Speaking of perturbo, I went digging through my iron warrior stuff and found my conversion of him.
Also found 8 metal obliterators, 2FW dreadnoughts slightly messed up , 24 nurglings, a pack of deathguard terminator upgrades from FW and other fun things like demon princes After pulling perturbo out I remembered he had his robotic guard "the circle of iron", perhaps I can use these guys to represent them.
The center guys. I have three now, I think there's supposed to be eight , guess I might have to buy more sedition war boxed sets
I sometimes can´t believe how much stuff you are storing....
the stripes look amazing....and I like how shaded they appear! nice scratches too...
perturabo looks good...tho I have to say...the kneepads look slightly too big... if it was a truescale marine that might work... but I get a feeling as if his knees are a bit swollen...arthritis...
Viktor von Domm wrote: watch your back mate... that sounds as if you work at a snakes den...have worked with such female workers like these before...and here the ancient idiom duck and cover is the best strategy... in my view if you wait long enough they tear themselves apart in due time...(thunderdome )

Duck and Cover.... Oh dear, that old Civil Defense song. I remember that from Elementary school. A Cold War thing. Here we go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKqXu-5jw60
In the good Ol' USA Vik, Duck and Cover is not as wise as Document and Report. It is the best way to CYA.
From Iron, cometh Strength. From Strength, cometh Will. From Will, cometh Faith. From Faith, cometh Honour. From Honour, cometh Iron. This is the Unbreakable Litany, and may it forever be so

I don't think there are chemists in the 40th millenium Doc. Or physicists either. A sad vision, humanity without scientists :(
I'm amazed at how well organized things look in the background. Pegboard even. Nice.
Doc is right about the freehand too. You must do some on something that big.
at Red... CYA... had to look it up... learned something new...the old song of duck and cover I know from way back... silly politics thinking for even sillier peeps... I still remember that scene from war of the worlds...where they nuke the aliens and just wear protective glasses...
and because of the lack of science in the 40k quasi religious worshiping got that far...or the other way round...
@vik, well we play games from an industry that believes bikinis provide a 5++ save so goggles could work, just ask Indiana jones if his refridgerator is still running?
@graven, thanks, I use a micro pen to outline the stripes and a ruler to make sure they start and end similar. Lurking happens(I think I need a shirt that says this)
@Dr. H, all scientists in 40k are given future lobotomies, where their heads are removed and turned into servo skulls. While this increases their longevity, it tends to shy people away from that pursuit of a career.
@redharvest, I recently reorganized my gaming/painting area.....it needs cleaning and reorganizing again @vik.....again, home ownership is good, having a mortgage sucks, but its better to pay. Little more each month and know you'll own it eventually than to pay rent and not get any return. But I also know that there's times when renting is the only way.
Did a little painting, but pics will come later as I must run out really quick so my daughter can go on a play date with a friend in a little while.
Edit back with pics.
Hazard stripes on claws I thought was a good idea at the time.....now it looks like scary gay fingernails
and yep indy´s freeze is epic...epic facepalm...I absolutely think that movie is the essence of jar jar binks... if he would have been grinded to dust...which I too think should have been done^^
Another sedition war figure, this time a good guy. Barka Soze, or something like that. Hears his t-Shirt armor and exoskeleton. Still needs work, but I'm liking the flesh tone on him. Must do something about the lips and his eyes though. WIP.
Then back to the iron warrior Titan
Sickle arm.
And how could I not throw hazard stripes on there
@Dr. H, thanks, patterned fingernails are good for.....not even going there
Well Thursday night and all day Friday were family time, as I'm sure today and tomorrow will be as well. Yesterday we spent 5hours in the car driving to and back from Hannibal, MO. The home of Samuel Clemens and Molly Brown. Samuel Clemens also known as Mark Twain the author of numerous books, articles and stories including Huckleberry Finn based most of his stories on his own life events in Hannibal. While the trip was fun....I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they were a big fan of Mark Twain, or wanted to see a run down town 80 years past its prime . Seriously it felt like the city wanted to only invest its resources into Mark Twain and Molly Brown (who I didn't learn anything about except she survived the Titanic . I didn't see one building in the town that looked as if it had been built in the last 50 years, everything was older than that and looked as if 50 years ago was the last time it saw any attention. Most homes had sagging roofs, falling porches and lawn mowers on their front stoop with weeds in the yard higher than their kids bikes. It was the Norman Rockwell equivalent of a 1960s Necromunda without the imperial eagle and skulls.
I may be bitter because everything we researched before going said "admission $8.00" and when we showed up it was at least twice that . Seriously we went to four different "attractions" to be let down with the price being way more than expected, and the Museums being little more than really old storefronts with a few actual pieces of furniture Samuel Clemens may or may not have sat in at some point in time. Even the metal street signs that used to be in front of the buildings that he worked in were just leaned against a wall inside a museum, no picture of the old building or anything, just the old sign saying that he used to sit in front of THIS window (you were in the center of the museum with no window within 30') and read an article about Joan of Arc, which got him interested in the topic .
I asked my kids what the best part about he trip was, and they mentioned getting to eat out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That's with all the places we went including the museum set up like a riverboat, all the old stores and seeing old cars 1950s era cars produced by manufacturers not even around when I was a kid in the 1970s. Normally I make them come up with a favorite besides the food, but my wife and I exchanged looks back and forth and we could see on each others faces "yeah that was pretty much the best part o the trip" .
The weather was pretty oppressive as well 96 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity all day. On the drive back we hit bad storms where you couldn't see 30' in front of you, but the temp dropped from 96 down to 69 (35 Celsius to 20 Celsius)in a matter of two minutes during the storm, but as soon as it stopped raining it was back up to 96.
I was so glad to get home and out of the car. Thursday night we went to the pool and I got sunburnt even with SPF 80 sunblock , I'm so fragile . I guess that might have skewed my opinion of the trip since the seatbelt kept rubbing my burns.
Anyway enough grouchy John. Woke up this morning before the kids and did a little panting.
Tried to write the iron liturgy on the pads, but it came out badly, so got painted over. It's just so long that even breaking it up onto both pads was not legible. It might appear on the top of the back later.
Edit: Also preordered this http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/pre-order/dreadball/product/azure-primalball-viii-limited-edition-dreadball-mega-bundle.html Yep, getting into dreadball hardcore. Great bundle deal. I was saving for more creaturecaster stuff and possibly a second kingsofwar army. The second might occur, but as I've heard how easy the dreadball rules are and my kids have been trying bloodbowl with me (big frustration for me to try and teach them), I though it might be fun. Plus so much cheaper than the bloodbowl stuff. The bundle comes with seasons 1-3, ultimate dreadball, and the azure forest league. Multiple teams, pitches, MVP, and a few giants. Ships onetime in July. Hopefully early July then I can say happy birthday to myself when it arrives .
Mortis is looking great Theo, and the "good guy" looks like an awesome piece.
Sad about likely the museum website likely posting outdated admission info, now they could be accussed of "Bait and switch" if they soon do not update their information to show 16 dollar admission rates.
@shaso, it wasn't JUST the museum. It was also a nearby cave that doubled its rates and a couple other attractions increased theirs as well. I think the city gave them all internet sites a few years ago and no one has paid the we page administrator to update anything recently.
Back from a day in St. Louis. So much better..... Free museums (all of them in forest park are free along with the zoo). The only thing they will be charging for this year is the 4th of July fireworks which have been moved there this year due to the St. Louis arch grounds being renovated. Even then they are only charging for parking. But with the local buses and metro link system I can hop on the bus at the stop that is next to my house and ride there for relatively cheap and not worry about traffic . St. Louis is a great place for a vacation, and dirt cheap as well. Anyone looking for a family trip let me know, I can give you the low down. The city also just celebrated it's 250th birthday (nothing compared to Europe I know), and there are 250 concrete birthday cakes around town at major landmarks. We hit four of them today, 3 while at dinner, and visited a fifth that we have already gone to. All the schools have a side project over the summer telling the kids to try and visit as many as possible and get a picture with you family next to each. Seems like it's working as every one we go to there's always a small line of families waiting to take a picture at the cakes. Each is about 4' tall and painted differently to celebrate the are they are at.
Anyways headed into one of my kids room with the family now as a nasty storm is approaching. Quarter sized pieces of hail, wind damage and flooding alerts going off. Maybe I'll getucky and that tree I was wanting down will come down and be covered by insurance .
Covered but minus a deductible. Just hope the storms blow it down away from the house. Sounds like standard summer weather here in the Mid-Atlantic. Except the hail. We do get the Hurricanes and Tropical Storms though. And in the past few years, a couple of earthquakes. Those were serious WTF moments.
The painting. Have you tried metallics with the airbrush yet? I'm seeing metallics on the big boy and wondering. For some reason they look great when airbrushed on.
@redharvest, its standard weather anytime here in the Midwest, just was different in the fact I was sitting by the window and heard my neighbors eating on their back porch (they eat outside on their patio year round unless its raining). I heard her say something about hail then them grab their plates and run inside, the stuff started about ten minutes later.
@cam, hatches were batten down and everyone is safe . Also thanks.
@shaso, I really think the town must have paid a guy years ago to build all the websites and haven't looked back at hem since. Given the state o the town (slums of Mayberry from Andy Griffith), I wouldn't be surprised if they didnt have Internet connection. One of the places was adamant that you had to have a printed coupon because there was no other way for them to know the coupon existed, and seemed shocked when my wife pulled it up on her phone. We also only got 1 bar on our phones most of the time we were there and at the restaurant we ate a and the museum there was no bars.
Anyway the storm passed us with little to no damage. Was without Internet for about two hours , but no damage I can tell to our vehicles, roof or the tree in the back yard . Got a little painting done this morning. Decided to try and paint up some more sedition wars stuff. This time a test for the good guys color scheme.
First pick with an Iron Warrior for size comparison. I call it "By the Emperor, Its a girl!!!" The real reason the chaos marines turned is because the Emperor didn't tell them they'd be neutered when changed into space marines Thinking of painting a little heart or playboy bunny on the badonkadonk
I didn't want to go with a space grey armor scheme, might try it on another model though to see.
Paging soldier McHottie , who needs big guns when most of he conflict can be resolved with supermodels in skintight armor holding their guns in totally ludicrous ways.
If I don use these figs for a sedition wars game hen I can always use them as alternate corporation soldiers for warpath or deadzone.
dreadball is awesome... I am quite often contemplating to get me the human and the orc team... they look simply stunning... for you I recommend the human dreadlike robot... that is an awesome built!!!
and that chick in armor needs a white hand on her rear... as if someone already inspected the merchandise...(sorry for the really horrible chauvinism...)
the chest piece of the IW looks interesting... a very unusal and fresh way to implement stripes on a model!
as for trips... well hasn´t anyone seen the inlaying weirdness? we drive millions of miles just to see that there is no place like home... I still want to get that idea into the head of my wife to stop going on unsatisfying trips... better stay at home...and avoid scammers this way ...
also glad no real storm danger happening to you!
as for the sunburn...you´re still a red head right?... avoid the sun at all cost!... really... my father in law had his legs totally burnt...looked something horrible when he was forced to sit and get healthy again...he slept in his chair and only his lower legs got sunburnt... well he to a redhead and this made his skin literally peel off and look as if he got roasted... (not that this made me too much sympathising with the old &&%§)
@graven, yeah, I lost the lobster contest, but won the retired farmers tan contest @vik, we call those staycations, where you stay at home and either see attractions there or you don't do anything except unwind. Not a redhead either, unless you consider the burnt parts around my receding hairline .
Have you played Dreadball? If so how fun is it? Doesn't matter ha I already ordered it I'm going to get into the game.
Also just returned from the "nun party", their were 7 women in her "class", 5 of which are still alive and were at the convent for the celebration. A sixth just passed away a month ago and the seventh within the last year. Pretty safe life to survive this long. My older sisters (who spent summer times with my aunt when they were growing up) found the room she was staying in and shorted her sheets like they did when they were kids . They just wish they could be here tonight when she crawls in bed and find the sheets tightened up where she can't stretch her legs out . Otherwise it was a good time seeing half my family that I usually only see at funerals.
Trying to think of an accent color for the sedition wars people. I put a yellow wire on her arm, but what for a shoulder pad color? Or should I do stripes on the helmet or something else.
@ shaso, I think red might be too much of a change, but thanks
@ cam, the bad guys can't shoot her either....but clawing her to death they have no problem with , I don't have turquoise, but might try it on another squad later.
@graven, good idea , it was my thought this morning after looking at he models with fresh eyes.
Well I decided to try orange, especially as the infected peeps have orange suits. That way it looks like the base or sector they all are from was the orange sector and these corporate scumbags just showed up to clean up their mess.
So orange shoulder pad, and captain model Kara black
Kara has a bionic right arm which totes an energy pistol and a power sword. Not happy with the skin tones to her face, then again the models faces in this material really aren't very defined.
Also started one of the other strain variants. Not too happy with the final color patter as I overdid it on the hazard stripes and it looks like a wasp And it's almost entirely encased in the armor so very little flesh exposed, but when your a ninja wassp assassassin with a butt like this
Who cares Chaos marine for size comparison. The strain virus must have stretched her out some, she must be near 9' tall.
Also started one of the other strain variants. Not too happy with the final color patter as I overdid it on the hazard stripes and it looks like a wasp
...
When I saw this image my first thought was the marine saying "By the Emperor! Another Woman!" and the strain chick sarcasticly saying "Holy a wall!"
Honestly I like how the wasp lady looks.
By the way how many of each strain figure come in the sedition wars box?
I too think the wasp look looks good... and that model has a strong =][= vibe to it...
the orange looks good on the shoulder...
I see there is something odd about the metal on the new ladies sword...
as for dreadball...nope, never ever played anything...:(
but I stumbled via ebay over their models...and I think they have a fantastic ratio of good looking sculpts and price!
Once I order and get my set, and then later mix in deadzone, I will make some fluff up about the why and wherefore for this "infection" and try it's PoV
@shaso, when you order deadzone get the box set, the separate use book doesn't have any info for building the gangs , you need the card sets for the gangs to be able to calculate a team.
@vik, the sword is straight gunmetal, its just the cast o he sword that's throwing the look off.
@chaotic mind, welcome back, and about the wall, now all I see is a female spider woman/wasp hybrid shooting the web from her arm about to jump off the paint pot and swing away
Well I'm liking the orange color now that I'm home from work. Also tossed some more paint, this time on the doctor figure.
Gave him yellow gloves, thought about doing the orange gloves with the biohazard symbol, but went with the yellow scrub gloves instead. I should have spent some time scraping mold lines on him because they are terrible, but this is number 1 of 3 right now so no too concerned. From the few quotes about him I've read, he's a real a hole , I think I'll call him Greg House .
monkeytroll wrote: OK, wasp-lady seals the deal, I'll go look for a cheap copy of the game. she'll fit right in with my daemonettes
Orange does work well as the spot colour, good choice
Miniaturemarket.com $39.00 is probably as cheap as you'll find it. I think they have free shipping around $100, and plenty of other good stuff there too.
@chaoticmind, missed the question of how many strains come in the box, I'll get you a pic later with totals. Sorry
@dsteingass, YOU LIVE glad to see you at least lurking about more, how's the lady doing since surgery?
Well short night of sleep. One of the older ladies on the night crew was having chest pains, luckily were not to far from an emergency room....like 30' . When I left she was doing fine, I'll get updates tomorrow when I'm on my first of my every other week six day stretch . But there's light at the end if that tunnel as I have 10 or 11 days off after that, and the wife is out of town for most of it so no nagging about "we never do fun things" . I'll have the kids, and they have doctor Appointments and sports to go to, but great painting times and hopefully my dreadball haul shows up while she's gone. The fewer questions the better .
In the mean time today I got a little done. I wanted to see how the fifth stage strain would look painted up Iron Warriors style. It's a long process with multiple layers of washes to get the metal color I want. So here he is with a layer of purple, blue and black on. He has since gotten a second black wash.
Also did the male soldier, female for comparison, I'm liking these figs, except for the mold lines .
And the strain wants o know if this hot makes its butt look big
And the crew so far, minus barker zosa as he will get into these color fatigues and like it
I know I have picks of it with arms somewhere, just can't find them . One arm is a gun that reminds me of the tau rifles. The other looks like a pine cone. I'll try and get it retaken later, going out with the family now.
@shaso, yep, he's 1 1/2 times the height of a human.
@vik, also thinking along the same lines. Helbrute/Dreadnought
So I went a little too heavy with his last black wash , he is now more black than iron, luckily he'll strip easily enough and repaint....or I have two more of him waiting to get primed and painted. Here's a group shot of strain
Also a contents shot of what comes in the box
One each unless stated in green under their names.
50 models and custom bases for $39.00 still at miniaturemarket.com
@vik, their internists always open, phones....not so much
@giraffex. Welcome back, thanks, but there was no metallics used, I'm using a technique nerdfest09 used on his Ferrus Manus to get a metallic black, I just went tooooooooooo far.
Just got to work, raining and traffic along with wife arguement , no fun fir theo today.
I'll have to either redo the whole model or reliant areas white and relayer. I think starting from scratch will be best and leave more details showing. I'll check back around dinner time to see other threads, lots of awesome happening everywhere this week.
Sorry for the quietness, haven't made it to my paint/model desk as the Friday from hell continued the rest of the night and topped off with me pulling a muscle in my left foot an hour before I left work. I gimped the rest of the night, and woke up in terrible pain Saturday. Kept it elevated all day and ibuprofen was my closet friend . Still worked last night, after the first hour my leg was numb. Thank God, today is day three of six before vacation, just trying to survive until vacation which is just a kick back and relax time, but the steps downstairs are too daunting for me to travel on this foot.
Remember the recommended dose for Ibuprofen? Here's a dirty secret. The prescription strength stuff is just double the regular dose. So 4 pills instead of 2. Just make sure you have some food in your stomach first.
I'm a BIG boy, I take four at a time , my container says no more than 6 a day , I did that before breakfast yesterday . I just make sure to have enough water and if I start feeling a little off then I switch to aspirin the rest of the day and I make it through.
Just checking in, I think this is the longest I've gone without posting in my own thread . No real update so feel free to exit now .
Kids are with grandma yesterday and today and tomorrow morning, will be home in time for fireworks though. Wife is now done with summer school, she was principal again this year, and has the next few days off till she runs all her cheer leading camps. I started my 11day vacation when I clocked out last night , regular days off, 4th of July holiday (take that you bloody brits ), and a few personal days all put together and its a good long stretch that my left foot is needing.
The wifelet and I are heading across the border today into Illinois to where my dad grew up in a little town called prairie du rocher. We're going to visit an old French fort called Fort du Charters. It dates back to before he Louisiana purchase and the seven years war for those of the British and French persuasion . Its an old stone fort and as close to seeing a castle in real life as many of us americans ever get to do in real life. We'll then hop on a ferry and cross back over the Mississippi and back into Missouri to some old cities over here. Might stop by a winery on the way home. Looking at beautiful weather for the trip.
it always surprises me how much non English heritage is to be seen in names and places...from so many movies you often only see the English side of America...(here at least...)
Well Vik, I grew up near Germantown. Real place name. And so named for, well, you already guessed it In the Mid-Atlantic region there is a huge amount of German heritage due to the Quakers and others inviting German religious sects (Dunkers, the Amish, for examples) to come and live in the new World. Plus another wave after Bismarck did his unification thing. Not all Germans wanted a Kaiser.
We took a lot of place names, a lot, from the American Indians too, and more than a few words too. Which is way cool, IMHO.
Have a great trip Theo, and hope the weather cooperates for you . We get a hurricane for the 4th this year. Yikes!
from an intellectual point of fiew I know that the melting pot theme is all around in the U.S....but you often see only a rather even image of America...well...of course you can´t trust TV but that goes without saying
thanks everyone for best wishes on the trip . Had a wonderful day yesterday. The drive to forte de Chartres took an hour or so, we stopped to take pics of the corn fields, soybeans and various other crops that all my relatives would know( some were probably their fields). I can see why farmers love gazing upon their land while things grow. The area we went to is "bottom lands" that are along the banks of the Mississippi River on the Illinois side of the river. My father grew up in this area with his three sisters, but their parents died within 24hours of each other when my dad was only 8years old, and the four of them were passed around the farms of all the cousins. My dad therefore has "brothers and sisters" and no cousins as they were all the same age.
The fort is actually a national park, and is a faithful reconstruction (only partially sadly) of the third forte de Chartres. The first was made of wood, a true frontier wood fort, the second was stone and the third also made from the native limestone. this is where I get a bad mix of three little piggies and monty python churned with history . The first fort rotted with the humidity and climate so a second fort was built using limestone, it was built closer to the Mississippi River because the river changed the route a bit. Unfortunately the river moved back later and swallowed the fort there's your great planning there (and here monty python comes in), the last fort was built between the two and has been swallowed by the river and spit back up more than (insert bad bulimia joke here) over the centuries. All that was left of the third fort are the foundations of the buildings and the powder keg. It has survived over 250 years and you can see the markings of where 2 Frenchmen retuckpointed the stones back in the early 1900's (1912 I think).
They have rebuilt two of the main buildings from what was still there, one was the governors building which is where they have a little museum, the other is a barracks. He also rebuilt the bakers house and a chicken coupe, but hose are small in comparison. The governors house is where Laclede stayed until crossing the river and establishing St. Louis the following summer. The fort was also the center of the French seat of power north of New Orleans, troops stayed here and were sent from here throughout the territory until the Louisiana purchase. It was also where legal disputes were handled as the judge lived on premises.
Here's a map of what it looked like.
And a view of what the approach looked like.
This is actually the rear view of the fort, and only rebuilt walls. The front and sides are gone, although the foundations are built back up to about a foot out of the ground and topped flat just to see the boundaries. I couldn't help think "man if the zombie apocalypse happens I'm headed here!", until I saw that the other walls are gone .
The weather was awesome yesterday. 63-76 degrees Fahrenheit here with a good breeze, felt like a nice spring day. After the tour of the fort we headed to the ferry that crosses the Mississippi River. It's old and a little intimidating, but was a first for my wife and I. I might take the kids on it next week as its an experience , and I can snap some photos of the boat and dock then. We then spent a couple hours in Ste. Genevive MO, which is another historical site just due to age over here, had lunch at a local tavern (nothing to write home/dakka about) and then went home after some shopping.
On the modeling side of things, not much occurred, I woke up early this morning.....then with no kids around I went back to sleep .
I did however toss some paint, pics later of some more strain and some barrels a la Grimdork.
Camkierhi wrote: Sounds like you had a great day, really happy for you.
And the general public survived without incident as well!!
You call that a castle?!!
its he closest thing we have to a castle, unless you look at some of the mansions in parts of St. Louis. We had a really great time, and arrived early, only the second car arriving that morning, and even beat the groundskeeper here . By the time we left there were maybe twenty people of all ages there, so not busy at all. It's a bit off the beaten path so no a highly visited area, and all the "highways" leading there are farm roads, just barely two lanes wide with no shoulder and no paint lines. Fresh road kill everywhere and vultures were a little perturbed that we interrupted their barn cat lunch .
My wife thought I was a dork when I climbed the tower and had her take a picture of me doing the French taunted scene from monty python holy grail. She posted it on her Facebook page, and by the time we got to lunch she had dozens o replies from friends and family with everyone quoting the scene verbatim even without a caption , she underestimates how cool I really am.
As to what I worked on this morning.
Did a little work on these strain guys. Assembled some grimdork style barrels with my water bottle caps and did some reading about deadzone. I wanted to try and do an African-American strain dude so I did the basic skin tone then tried a light delvan mud wash over the skin areas, leaving the boils the Baal red color. Still waiting for him to dry, but this is where he is at right now.
The kids should be hom shortly from their trip with grandma and we have fireworks tonight to go watch. "Daddy's birthday candles" as I had them brainwashed as babies . Tomorrow is the end of the world after all, my wife keeps reminding me that I will no longer be able to check the 30-39 year old box anymore and will officially be 40 . Of course I have to remind her that she's not too far behind and paybacks are a . (Plus I have no grey hairs, except a couple in my beard, which I can shave )
Thanks Cam, I always tell everyone the fireworks scared me and I stayed in till things quieted down. I would have rather been called Sam though , but I know 8-9 people that were all born on the 5th of July, including John Byrne the comic book writer/artist, one of my all time favorites.
Also forgot to post the back of the African strain, this is after the second layer of delvan mud, which is still a little wet.
I'm not one for video games. The exceptions being bloodbowl, might and magic, and Sid meiers alpha centauri. Don't underestimate the size of he box. It's roughly 14"x14"x 3" and the tiles and counters are thick card plus all the resin inside.
Also the kids are wiped out from their trip, so more free time for me as they nap . Got out some of the bits I brought home from work. I cut the connectors off of the IV connectors to make little canisters. Then halfway through I realized that the airsoft pellets I had barely fit inside of the canister, and if you stack two of them inside it looks like a neat little lid for the canister. WIP photo
happy fourth of July my American friends!...so... you´re turning to an old fart tomorrow then?... that means you´re three months ahead of me...... better you than me, eh?....
and you´ve been mightily productive... seeing you now try yourself with different skin tones...this shows how complicated detailed these models are...
the cap/barrels is always nice to see...so many variations to that idea!
I knew yours was coming up later in the year vik, just couldn't remember the day .
Lots of different things I can do with these bits , like not cutting the stem off and making a sci fi computer console.
I might even paint one up but leave he clear green globe sticking out like a holographic sphere .
Of course I can also make inspirational pieces out of these, like his little guy to cheer me on.
Spoiler:
He just seems to be saying "oooooooooooo!" Like he just saw something I created and is giving me positive feedback
Well I think I might take a nap too since it will be a long night with lots o explosions which will continue for days as people just keep shooting them off for he next week or two . We Americans love our explosions
by the way... theo... you should write some fluff... or make a jump into stand up comedy... you really have some talent in that regard... don´t let it go to waste!...
we often say LOL here but your description of the castle and the hints on the monty python works was so hilarious!
Automatically Appended Next Post: lol... that fella reminds me of the lil friend of that Disney tinkerer... dunno the English name of that character... but he has a lighting bulb for a head....
but to be honest... my first thought was... cool...bewbs...
You have to be a Yankee Doodle Dandy to be born on the 4th. Or so goes the song.
Airsoft pellets? Those are 6mm right? And translucent it looks like. Put an LED under one and see what sort of effect that produces. They might make glowglobes.
And for castles in America... yes, we have them. Hearst Castle is perhaps the most famous, although not so castle looking. My favorite is the Smithsonian Castle
Built from red sandstone, hence its color.
One cannot tame the Mississippi River. People never seem to learn that.
The strain guys are looking good. The orange pants are interesting...
Oh what.. Theo is older.. i don't think it shows in his posts. Age is nothing on the internet! Good painting Theo, tho I do feel like those pants could start a disco fire.
Thanks guys , day started off really rough, but after lunch it kept getting better and better. Went to the pool, though the water was chilly we ran into friends who I invited over for dinner and we all had a nice time. My wife spilled the beans that she tried to get a surprise party together for my birthday, but we Americans have too much fun with the 4th of July, and everyone has stuff planned with family, so it's going to happen in a couple weeks so I need to pretend to be surprised then.
As for how old I act I am a firm believer in aging in human years, and aging mentally in dog years so I am nearing six years old mentally .
Somehow my GIFT is our friends youngest daughter spent the night over with my kids and I got to make breakfast this morning for yet another mouth .
Off to church now, the wife is singing today, the to walmart afterwards because the cupboards are bare.
Happy belated birthday Theo! sorry it's late but thankfully i'm not a menstrual cycle eh! all those models are WICKED looking I love the wasp assassin lady thing! frickin' cool, so are the strain models, I may just have to see what they're all about! :-)
Cooking for another mouth is your gift... I see here the.extra helping of sarcasm...
I think this is a scheme isn't it with surprise parties...seldom is the person it is aimed for surprised at all...from all the tv shows I know, only a castle episode comes to my mind, where they cobble together a birthday party as the climax to an old Hitchcock movie case...the rear window...
And nowadays whenever someone says Walmart I think of south park...
Wife is out of town for the next four days , soooooooooo. I was at miniaturemarket.com before they opened , and bought myself my birthday present.
Been wanting the box for a while, but bought the book instead figuring I had terrain and could proxy models. SURPRISE, the book may have the rules but no point costs for building gangs or mission info. You need the cards that ONLY come in the starter set, or in the gang packs. And since buying the two gangs and the board were the same cost as the set I got the box set instead for the terrain.
I hadn't thought the models(the plague) looked that good and planned on using my sedition wars strain instead, but then I opened the box.
The cards are same size as playing cards for comparison. That big hunk is the large plague model.....minus arms and head, the model next to it is an enforcer, and slightly taller than a space marine.
Also picked up donuts for the kids, who said you can't buy love .
Yes Vik, donuts , we eat healthy when the wife's away . I won't sleep while she's gone, I'm terrible when her side of the bed is empty . It's why I must die first .
Here's a quick shot again of the strain 1A and the enforcer captain compared to a marine scout. Also notice that the scout is on a base and the others are not. The enforcers are basically space marines mantic style, though no one knows where they com from or how they are made . Cutting the terrain from the sprue takes time, then trimming. I've got it half assembled now. You can see the start behind the models. What I like most is everything is 3"x3". The board is all 3" squares and you move anywhere between the squares equal to the number of squares for your stats, no rulers needed. Model sizes restrict how many models per square too.
Off to take the oldest to volleyball camp. Back with more after while.
OK between you and Grim thats it, got to go buy this. Those look great, the terrain is amazing, and sounds like game play actually might get me to play something again.
We all enjoy breaks, but just as you, I would miss them all. Good chance to make the most of it though. Enjoy.
Theophony wrote: Yes Vik, donuts , we eat healthy when the wife's away . I won't sleep while she's gone, I'm terrible when her side of the bed is empty . It's why I must die first .
Lol, I'm the same way. First day is PARTY! then I miss the family so terribly.
But the obligatory Dharma and Greg Greg's Dad quote for when his wife is out of town (sung to the Camptown Races):
"Ball and chain has gone away....doo dah...doo dah. Drink martinis naked day, all the livelong day"
It wears off and I have a hard time sleeping too.
Anyway, the big Plague model is one of my favorite models out lately. It is really nice to paint, I've been doing mine as a Chaos lord counts as with lightning claws. Been painting it as molten in the recesses, so it is not really a plague demon, but whatever. Definitely a good buy.
@cam, yes, from Grims demo games I figure his might be what gets my kids playing too.
@gorgrimm, welcome and thanks, it is definitely more impressive in hand than what I've seen pics of.
@shaso, they still have a couple left....for now muwahahahahah!
Might want to act fast on their terrain kits, the manticgames.com web page has he prices up $25.00 per kit on the larger kits since the sale ended. No sure if that's permanent or not, I noticed it Friday/Saturday the change, hadn't paid any attention to other sets.
Here's the enforcers
Some terrain, notice how the two end cubes are the same, one just has the door snapped in place, the other is wide open.
Selection of models for sizes
The plague 1A is a size 3 model, so cannot fit on the half with squares (3x1.5"), the plague 2A looking for a hug is a size 2, so can fit on the half squares. The enforcer captain is also size 2, and regular enforcers/sedition wars figs are size 1.
Squares can have a total of size 4 on one square per side. So the plague could have a 1A and a 3A(size 1) on it, or two 2A's in it, but not a 1A and a 2A as that would be a total of size 5 from the one side.
I really hope hey come out with the hips plastic enforcers as the restic guys are a pain to put together. They have locking keys at the joints, but they are so hard to tell the different ones apart and the minor warpage and fill gates are annoying.
around two years ago my wife and the kids were away for three weeks... it was one of these mother children health care vacations our health care system provides... well I was alone three weeks... that was the longest period of time I was alone since I got together with my wife... it was horrible... sleep-, eating patterns all screwed up... motivation at it´s lowest... and I only survived because I devoted myself to a homecoming project for my kids... I made them a pirate ship from wood and cardboard... pics in the gallery under pirates of the floor...
really... I wouldn´t enjoy any moment of these four days... but then I am a weird one... I feel best when everyone is around...but all keep to their own businesses and I do my own stuff... but everyone is at a hearing distance...when my wife snores (it happens with women too.:.) then I know everything is sound () and safe!... my kids snore too...^^
terrain looks good...I think for painting this you need to get yourself an extra dose of red harvests paintings
as for the models...well I never was a chaos friendly (in terms of models only...one look at my desk will tell you that I live chaos ) but these plague minis look very good...very resident evil in my opinion...
@vik, I don't think I could handle that long without them. Luckily its only the wife gone, and my sons at grandmas for two days, but the girls are here.
@comrade, if only it meant more hobby time @shaso, I like them ALOT
Well not alot has gone on here. Trying to keep the girls occupied. Also been swimming everyday when not getting hit with torrential downpours and quarter sized hail. Finally taking some of my own time and primed some figs. Also picked up some more paint and a couple new brushes while I was out today. I don't have much time before making dinner, so here's another look at the plague 1A, primed white and coated with reikland fleshshade. Not shire if I want to go more red on the model or more bone colored. I'm thinking red, but might even throw some blue on there to bring him in with the strain models.
Also trying to come up with a color idea for my enforcers. I'm thinking of doing same as the humans from my sedition wars, buy I also like the stark white that the studios use on them.
@cam, he does look suitably monstrous, a good antagonist, hopefully I didn't botch him below.
@shash, I might have to get another of him to modify to look more strain like. He'll need some armor and tubes
Well all plans of getting time last night died. Dinner, cuddle time with the kiddos and general fatigue from lack of sleep took its toll. But this morning I decided to go ahead and give him a red wash on the hard boney bits. I think it'll need either a second wash or a brown wash to boot, but here he is.
Automatically Appended Next Post: slow day
so I started doing the standard enforcer scheme with just doing grey instead of black. I'm kind of digging the look.
Also did a second red wash and a brown wash on the plague 1A, pictures later.
Oh he has the plates, just the right color is needed is all. the tubes and cables is another matter. But could be added using any spare cables from your SM stuff. some of the gaps he has can be where to glue those and putty in connectors
@shaso, the helmet that goes on the sedition wars dreadnought fits this guy perfectly, and then some tubes will help too.
Well the second wash is done
Also no pics, but painted some other models from the plague line. I'll take some shots later as the wife and kids are all home now.
to be bluntly honest... I don´t like that color blocking look on that last strain/ plague mini... the first pic with that first wash was breath taking in my opinion... as the bony look suits that model very well... it is like the alien hybrid of alien 4... with a glossy varnish all over and even a small puddle beneath it would be perfect... all the red wash i think ruined for me the mutation look of that model...I know I am probably the devils advocate here...BUT on the brighter side...the black/bluish fingernails / talons are spot on... this underlines the viciousness of that model just fine... for eyes I would have done black eyeballs with just the tiniest hint of a light shimmer...could be blue, red, yellow or green either way...
now to some purely positive feedback... you are a veteran when it comes to paining armoured high tech minis... the last trooper shows that yet again... the mix of yellow as a spot color to the white black and grey mix is spot on!!! I think it was two years ago the colour mix of fashion in RL shops...really...I still remember talks with my wife about that colour combi for a dress we both saw in a shop window...
and congratz for having all your family healthy and safe and sound back home!!!
@cam, yes cam on the big guy and the second big guy I'm about to show its only washes.
@vik, always glad to get honest feedback and not just "they look great ", also the trooper colors are the color choice from the studio, so I cannot take credit for that, but thanks @shaso, I'm really loving the look of the helmet on him, not only is it bringing a techno feel, but if I add some cool antenna he will look even more like a crustacean , which is what the armor plates on him remind me of.
@hk1x1, thanks, I'm liking him so much more in person than all the pics I've seen of him (sounds like a bad blind date )
Well got some done last night and I'm up early this morning so here goes.
I got on of the newly infected guys done. Still went with the orange shirt to tie him in with the orange from my sedition wars guys, but he got blue jeans to show his previous civilian life. Also you can see the plague 2A guy between them showing that he's big and mean. I don't like how he and the other plague 2A have smooth crustacean shells and the 1A is all spiky, almost like they had two different guys sculpt them Here's the whole plague starter gang that comes in the box. 5 newly n fetched guys, 3 of the plague 2A and 2 plague pups to go along with the big plague 1A.
On another note I need an attitude check. Hopefully you all can chime in here with your opinions as I value everyone's. I pre-ordered a dreadball bundle from mantic back two weeks ago, it said shipping in July, so I wasn't expecting it right away. But then with the World Cup they started doing blitz sales 20, 25 and 30% off for different things, the 30 being a one hour only sale, and the 25 being a twenty four hour "holy crap did you see what Germany did?" Sale. I emailed them during the 20% off sale over a week ago asking if I could get either a refund of the 20% from the sale or credit on additional merchandise to ship with it as the order is not sent yet. No reply for over a week, in the mean time I went to their site during the sales and was able to get the orders to the final pay screen both times (25% and 30%) for the same bundle, so I know the discount would have worked. I finally called and left a voicemail on Wednesday asking for the discount and referencing my email message. I get an email response the next day here, which is fine since there's a 6 hour difference, saying that they won't discount it but would be willing to refund it, just let them know.
So here's the deal. Do I continue to push for the discount? Here in the US most retailers give people 10-30 days for getting a credit back if an item goes on sale during that time, so I feel it is warranted, even though they aren't based here. Do I suck it up? But at 20% its a $36.00 difference, but at 30% its a $54.00 difference and I'm not made of money. Do I just get a refund and walk away, not getting into dreadball at all? I did get into the dreadball extreme kickstarter after it closed, no money invested yet, but for $100.00 and what I already ordered in this bundle I would have all 6 seasons, extreme, 4 teams and a bunch of extra star players and MVP. I could easily find a new outlet for my monies, even if its other mantic stuff like deadzone, or gaming stuff in general.
Refund/discount or walk-- or as a good friend uses to say, use the 'power of the consumer'. There are plenty of games out there. How much Dreadball would you end up playing anyway?
That Lego battlefield is a good start, but needs Lego buildings and of course, Lego tanks!
A question too. Do you fill the joints? In the photos, a few of the minis look like they could use some filler in the arm to torso connections.
The beasties look like they could do with a dry-brush to highlight the detail and spiky bits. Red looks a little flat at the moment.
I'm sure they would prefer to get 70% of the cost from you rather than nothing. Gimme discount and I'm sure to spend more, or a refund and I'll go elsewhere...
@red harvest, I don't do joints (in presidential tones) , no filler used either (hot dog commercial voice) as for how much I'd play...it would depend on how simple the game is. My son is starting to play bloodbowl on steam, and I'm looking for something quick and easy to learn for them and me.
@dr. H, I might give the drybrushing a try after I get all the models to the same level so I don't get all frustrated wondering what I did differently to some since I'll forget what I did. I can kind of see their point as the bundle itself is a huge discount, but if they offer an across the board discount they should have that factored into their business plan.
Well here's a quick update.
Big guy and the plague dogs. He's sporting the helmet from the sedition wars chtonian. I think I like I better than just an angry face, but I need some lobster antennae on it and maybe a pat of butter too. Here's some more guys WIP, the other plague 2A duo and another newly infected guy. Mantic is trying to give dynamic poses to the models so kudos for that, but the poses are so visual that it limits making multiples. All I see is gorilla guy, jumping guy and loud yelling guy. Also the others have only had one coat of the red so right now they look even more slaaneshi in their ho pinkness.
They are the new kits from mantic games for deadzone(necromunda) and warpath(40k). The kits are great and all the squares are 3". They also have half walls 1.5"x3" and barricades. They are a greT price too. You get a set up in the Deadzone box game but the quadrants are a better deal. I'm sure at gencon they will have even better deals . They will also be releasing transparent plastic windows/force walls that pop I to the pieces. Let me know if you want any close ups.
Congrats on the full time gig by the way .
Just got the email from mantic. They said the pre orders are exempt so they will not provide the discount. I voted with my wallet and told them to refund my order. I just hope they do it soon instead of two weeks from now. Odd how she waited until the end of day (approximately 6pm in England) on a Friday to respond.
WOW those sedation wars models are really cools slupts. I've never seen size comparisons of em and they are quiet cool. Definatly love what you are doing with them so far
actually I probably would want my money back... but I dunno if that really gives you any needed leverage... it´s one of these cases where the company thinks it is still a producer market... instead the other way ´round....
@vik, thanks, but I wouldn't want you to give away such prized material . I did get my money back, but not for long see below
@rogue wolves, yeah, the size comparison probably would have helped sell the models, as is I've gotten a few people to offer me their sets from the kickstarters. One of the sets is on its way to me next week and includes the riddick figure and bone crabs
Well as I mentioned to vik, I go the money back from the dreadball order and I waited a whole two hours till I spent it , on mantic stuff too
Well dave asked about the terrain that came from deadzone, so when I was looking at it some more and realized mantic upped the price on the bundle again right before their big sale( is that legal in England? Because it ain't over here in the states ), I went and picked it up at miniaturemarket a few minutes ago.
The box is 7.5"x12"x17.5" packed full of terrain. Hot I'm excited. Oh I put the enforcer model on the box for size comparison, bet no one noticed it until I wrote it here .
Less talk now, more snipping gluing and cursing. The wife just left for the journey and Steve miller concert and the kids are cleaning their rooms and then watching a movie so I get free time
Oh I put the enforcer model on the box for size comparison, bet no one noticed it until I wrote it here .
LMAO!!! totally didn´t see it there until I read it...
good deal you got your money back... the new terrain then will be a good addition to your table...no doubt about that... and since you´ve made so much progress with AB painting this will be usable in no time...
@dave, sorry I didn't take a Picture of the inside of the box when I opened it. I was way too excited . But the box was packed, almost too tightly as two pieces broke off the sprues, but no real damage done. Yes from miniaturemarket, they still have it listed at base cost of $179.00 and then 20% off, mantic just bumped he price up to $199.00, so I got it for 30% off, no waiting for shipping, and if you do a local pick up you can spin a prize wheel. I got 800 MM points ($8.00 off my next purchase), which paid for the taxes.
@vik, all I've done with the airbrush has been to basecoat models, but I'll get alot of practice soon.
Well I popped plastic off of 10 sprues and cleaned the edges up. I wanted to see what the fortified buildings looked like.
The left and right side are the same, but the armored shutters have been popped onto the right side.
There's still plenty of sprues to go, but making dinner right now for the family. They say there's enough parts in here to build terrain for a 6'x4' table, or a very crowded 4'x4' table. There's also a ruined quadrant for the same price which has half walls and floors with exposed girders and burnt sections. It's probably next on my list.
They are fully modular as they are. There are connector pieces that lock them together like RIVETS , only these can be taken apart and put back together different ways. They can be a bear to assemble/disassemble, but it does work. They are nice pieces, but some of the accessories are a bit flubbed from being de molded too soon. Nothing unsalvageable, and might help with the whole "it's been kicked around a bit in battle" look. I got my brushes back out, put away the terrain for right now to keep painting. Still tons of sprue to pop and clean.
Awesome deadzone minis! Good to see more people getting into it. I really like your idea for the bunker with opening gates. May have to try that myself.
@shaso, I rarely toss anything, but even the basement has its limits
@rogue wolves, the set is good, needs lots of trimming to get the edges right and the connectors could be a pain, bu still probably he best modular walls I've seen.
@squall018, thanks, and welcome. The idea is actually what I could see off the mantic site. They really should have instructions @dr.h, yeah no resemblance , but then again they make completely different types of games @ruglud, its a great deal for the cost, I wish I had been on that kickstarter though.
@azazelx, hopefully you get it well before all the dreamforge stuff.
Well back to work from vacation today , and I've also volunteered to help at church part time too , the lady who cleaned the church passed away a few months ago and the teenagers have been doing most of the cleaning to help pay for their yearly trip a few weeks back. Now that that is over with, they are looking for something more permanent, and more reliable. If I like it I think it could become a weekly gig for as long as I want, but I also have school starting in a few weeks as well so we'll see.
Not much on the modeling side. Spent yesterday a the pool again, I hope I'm done peeling, I know I've got a good tan started. Then my brother in law and I hit the flgs for a bit, watched some hero clicks tournaments, war machine and others get played for a couple hours. Afterwards went back to my house for some x-wing fun . I got thumped pretty good but that's because Han Solo couldn't hit anything ith 4 dice of attack plus re rolling all four, and he had a target lock on them to boot . The force was poor with this one, he didn't even have to roll to evade .
Quick stop in everyone. I'm going to be cutting back ALOT here as I have taken on a part time gig at church which will be great when the kids are back in school, but might really suck when I start back in a few weeks also . I'm still working at the hospital on second shift also, so not much time or anything except for God, work, family and school. But of course as I cut back there's always new hinges that show up on my doorstep. Case in point.....
A recent acquisition...sedition wars biohazard set for dirt cheap. Told the guy I didn't need the box or the cardboard tiles, unfortunately he chosen shipping box didn't travel well. All seems good though, a few broken models, but here wasn't anything inside protecting hem except one crumpled up card paper piece which still allowed for lots of movement.
All the bags of goodies. Minus a few decks of cards for the various figures and bag of generic D6s.
The most interesting bits
Special edition character, she's he same as the gal from the main box, but a much nicer sculpt. She has more definition to her uniform, a real right arm not bionic, a different gun, and a helmeted head. She also has crabs.......bonecrabs that is. 6 little skulls with six legs and a tail that has laser beams, Dr. evil would be so impressed .
Lastly there's Riddick and a guy in a suit of "gnosis" armor. Great looking models to me. Also he blue plugs . Two look like guns, two look like cameras, not sure of the last two though. I'll have to look it up on kickstarter to see.....or read their ability cards
3 translucent dice for the strain and 3 for the good guys as well as a patch to sew onto my geeky uniform someday .
I've been watching he specials go for $20-30 for riddick and the suit and the bonecrabs have only showed up a few times.
The set also came with I think twice as many regular models as the retail box set came with, so lots of models for my horde of strain and good guys. Plus all the bases as well.
There is some cool stuff there. I see the patches sewn onto transport bags generally. Infinity has a ton of patches available, and there are a couple of battlefoam bags ( no comment on the owner of Battlefoam though.)
@redharvest, hard to sew onto cardboard , I don't do the canvas/battle foam bags, used boxes are good to me.
@shaso, so much more to do
Well, squeezing in time here and there got a little painting done.
Here's riddick
Finished his blades since then
Think I'll name him Vin-Q since he's such a cueball.
Oh and the enforcer captain
Cape is not attached yet.
Also found some more limited models in the set I just got.but you'll have to waita while to see those.
Riddick is awesome, interesting you have him in biege. It looks brilliant, I would have gone black, but then it would not fit with your other stuff, your skin tone looks brilliant.
Captain is just spot on, agree with Panda, the yellow stripes just finish it perfectly.
@comrade, thanks , just went with the standard scheme but did dark grey instead of black.
@cam, thought about doing riddick in black, but he's badass enough to look cool in just the standard issue gear @dr. H, thanks, there's so many people upset with this kickstarters goods that you can get the stuff relatively cheap if you look for it. With a little work they come out great though.
@shaso, riddick was a kickstarter only item, so you need to arch eBay, or pay hefty for him unless someone is trying to unload their kickstarter pledge cheap like I found.
Not much to report. The part time gig at church and trying to get ready for my school and my kids schools starting up has taken alot of my time. I just got back from dropping he kids off for church summer camp. It's a sleep away camp so they are gone till Saturday afternoon . 200 kids all with a weeks worth of luggage and I got the pleasure of loading it not a 26' long uhaul, but at least its perfect weather outside right now and looking like low-mid 80 degree weather for them all week.
I did place an order for a couple figures, its a close out deal from one of the big kickstarters, they had some extras laying about and bundled 8 regular sized and 2 huge figures together for $30 including shipping. You get two of each model, and I will get practice on them for some techniques I need work on. Keeping the secret for now .
Okay, it's been a while. Kids are home from church camp, and taking naps as they are worn out . Weather has been perfect all week, low 80s, and only a short spot shower on Friday.
Did some painting recently, various things.
Bone crabs from sedition wars, kickstarter exclusive.
The rest is scary stuff seriously.......NSFW....Not safe for wives to see either . Enter at your own risk. Not typical theo stuff.
Spoiler:
i really mean it
Spoiler:
REALLY!!!!!
Spoiler:
KINGDOM DEATH chick
And behind her you can see the evil that is
THE WET NURSE
So the chick is a character in this scary demon world, not too bad, but the sword is longer than she is tall the way she's holding it so you either have to model her at the edge of her base with the sword sticking over using the height of the base to keep her level or snip the tip of the sword off .
The wet nurse is just creepy as all gets out. It's a giant penis monster with boobs attached to it and vaginas in different recesses. The top down shop was because it looks like it had a pregnant woman attached to its back that is getting melded into its flesh . It has a penis tail that matches the height of one of the naked female models that accompanies it. Sh is in a kneeling position with her mouth wide open . As if that's not weird enough there is a collapsed female who is pregnant and a second pregnant servant who has tubes connected from the nipples which she is connecting to the monsters side. There's also sculpted onto the beast a hand holding a newborn that is suckling at one of the many breasts on the beast. The wet nurse has 12 arms on it, 10 of which you get to place in spots that are set along the side, 2 of the arms, the really big ones are limited to where they go.
I picked up the set (which has two of each of these) for $30.00 including shipping. The wet nurse's may eventually see the light of day as a part of a new demonette army in the future as demon princes. The female captive will probably be objectives for the army. The hero character is just extra for painting.
With these I'll be getting plenty of practice working on skin tones .
I just pre-ordered infinity operation:icestorm have mercy on me . Grimdork and his delve into infinity.
@cam, ...........not sure how it wouldn't be explicit no matter how I paint it up. Unless I use house paint and many many layers.
@joerugby, welcome and thanks
That melta marine will have a hard time job killing it with HOLY FIRE....and lots of that!!!!
I am surprised your wife is allowing this stuff in her house...(concerning such stuff, it is always her house...funny innit? When drains or holes in the roof are on the schedule it is most likely your house that's rotting around...)
You seem to be seeing too much worrying stuff at the hospital these days...your stuff you work with gets creepier every day......but also disturbingly good looking...
And I'm glad you can squeeze in us here at dakka and painting minis despite your tightly packed schedule between work, family and church...sheeesh don't you ever sleep?
@monkeytroll, the deal was a limited clear out of the plastic run. No cards, boxes or stuff for the game, but too good of a deal to pass on.
@vik, that's why these are NSFW (not safe for wife to find ). A great deal I couldn't pass on, an she has never taken interest in my game things. Just complains about the time wasted on them right before he goes shoe shopping .
Well the wet nurse is primed as is the other model. In the mean time I started painting other things from my treasure trove.
Two lovely Escher gangers from time long gone. I have most of the models from the Escher range, and even go Mad Donna last year from I think Graven
As for wired stuff I've seen at work.....yeah lots of freaky things an people.
My niece is having her sweet sixteen party tonight. She is old enough to drive a car now . Never thought she would make it this far. She was born with he umbilical cord wrapped around her hand so badly that it fused the bones of her fingers together. She's had a bunch of surgeries to separate the fingers and do some cosmetic work on them as well. She has full use of each finger, but they are not pretty. Also hen she was four she had a fever that topped 106 and caused some brain damage which later caused her to have frequent seizures. She's since has had brain surgery to remove part of the brain damaged by the fever which was causing the seizures. She went two years without any, but then puberty brought them back. The doctors have since cleared her to be able to drive, before they said she would never be allowed because of the seizures. She is now a legal driver, which you still need to watch out for on the sidewalks . I'm just proud of her and all she has overcome. Oh and she competes in the junior women's golf players association and has won most of the tournaments she competes in. She tied for first place last year in the national level, but took second after a shoot out.
man.... your family is big.... and full of wonders.... nuns and kiddies that have so many packages to carry around...
yesterday I saw a man getting into his car with his left arm all wrapped up in plaster....????WTF.... and when I tried to get my drivers license my teach told me he saw a man driving a car with plastered up leg up to the hips....???...well...I guess your niece then only comes way back in the line for to look out for drivers
these eschers are my kind of female minis...grapefruit sized bewbs....and muscles and hard tools to kill men ....that's way better that any wet nurses^^....(mind you I saw the wet nurse when it was first announced way back and it disturbed me all the way.... thought it was just a japaneese joke mini....but no such luck.......all these tentacles and boobs....youck***)
eschers in fact are very mad max style in my view...and we all know that this is the pinnacle of style of post apocalyptic styles around...eh?...right
tried to get my hands on Mad donna a view times here at ebay... that missus is hard to come by for a cheap euro....sheesh...quite a big present from graven then....I got from him a nice presie recently too that I am actually working on....needs some more coats of paint to be shared with the lot of you tho...
I saw a thread on here with a bunch of people that were disturbed by that model a while ago. It's certainly an interesting model. It's a bit too Urotsukidōji and not enough H. R. Giger for my tastes though. Look forward to what you do with it.
Dear with the sword looks nice.
Bone-crab things are looking good.
I always expect to see stairs going all over the place when people mention Escher.
Yes to Giger-- may he rest in peace. Awesome stuff.
Glad you spoilered the KD stuff. That Wet Nurse thing is... not the nastiest KD mini by a long stretch. I think the one in mid-vomit is a bit worse, whatever it is called.
A warning about the Infinity figs. They are detailed, and they have some very small bits. Do NOT throw away anything until you have fully assembled them, even if you are positive it is just flash.
Oh...KD still has some of those cheap packs available, snagged one for myself, glad I popped over to check now. Still need to pick up a copy of Sedition Wars, possibly next week as I should have some incoming funds.
@monkeytroll, glad you got a pack, last I looked they were sold out.
Sedition wars figs are nice, but lots of mold line scraping to do and some hot water baths to get the grendlr joined correctly. But for the price miniaturemarket has it at you can't go wrong.
Well I'm have a quandary. I preordered operation: icestorm from miniaturemarket, but now I'm thinking of canceling it. It's the jumping on point for infinity, but since I don't game anymore except quick pick ups with my brother in law, I think I'm just going to get a refund on it. The models are cool and I hear the system is great, but it still doesn't mean I'll get any games in anytime soon. Especially with school starting up and having taken on the job at church to boot. I'm thinking of returning the preorder and picking up some new Star Wars x-wing stuff and filling out the fleet some more. At least it's a game I can just pull out and play, maybe even get the kids involved with it.
I think I ordered icestorm for the wrong reason. I was looking for something to replace GW, but as I'm not playing GW why am I throwing money at another thing to sit on the shelf? Love the look of the models, but still not sold completely on the style. Oh well I can always jump in later, but my brother in law just isnt into anime or robots (he must be slow )
Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry, missed a few comments yesterday , I'll blame it on being on my cellphone while at work on break .
@Vik, yep I was one of those original group complaining about the wet nurse.....things change. And graven gave me a great price on the mad Donna figure. I still have it in the blister awaiting attention.
@giraffeX, it will be hard to get it to look right.....well as intended
@Dr. H, yes legend of the overfiend is probably the closest comparison.
@red harvest, the fiddlieness of the parts is another reason why I'm taking a third look at infinity.
Well the new competition is up and running.... On a path anyway. I've decided to
Throw my hat into this round and am currently scouring the Dakkanet to find help in my project. Entering the Deathstar trench run. Hopefully I can pull this off. My plan is currently to make the tops of the board playable(flat) for x-wing and make the center trench piece a separate entity so I can remove it and slide the other two parts together to have just a space ship/station themed board when not running the trenches.
Current finances are , we bought we had budgeted correctly for summer but screwed up by two weeks . Everything will be fine in a few weeks, until then no nights out and spending is nonexistent. Also schools back in session as well, so time will be a factor.
I am moving more away from miniature gaming such as 40k, and more into the completed gaming systems like x-wing as the rules are tight and I don't have to paint anything, but could if I wanted to. As such I'll be shedding some of my gaming material so if anyone knows anything they want let me know.
I might even part with some of my 200+ necromunda bulkheads
be sure to drop dave a line if you ever really want to sell the bulkheads
funny fact... one of the few instant ideas concerning the comps theme was in fact the deathstar trench... I think that would be a cool and actually a fitting idea to make you play the game then!
as again for the death star trench... I think the way to a good looking product is the simplicity of the shapes... mostly from what I remember is the lot of variations of squares and cubes... I think this is very likely to be doable...really....do it... for the benefit of all of us! good luck mate... and since you will use an AB for painting I see no difficulties....
@cam, don't I know it , but I think I've just given up on GW. Even thinking of parting ways with everything except bloodbowl. I can get an occasional game of that in.
@vik, I've seen that thread, very neat. I've also considered building a table in the shape of a star destroyer and having the top pop off to be the playing surface. I'm just not THAT big of a Star Wars nut ......yet
I've got a message out for a trade of my space marines for someone's x-wing stuff. It will grow my fleet enormously if it happens. Also I'm sure I mentioned it but i cancelled my infinity order. I like the look of the models, but getting realistic with my game time/preferences.
Camkierhi wrote: Everyone is selling up these days. So much I could buy, nothing to buy it with.
I've thought the same. Damn my lack of job and disposable income...
I've also thought that I'm a bit late with getting into 40k, as everyone seems to be leaving. Still, I'm in it for the modelling and not the gaming, so no major loss to me. They could make it the best game playable ever, and I'd still have no-one to play with in my area... *shrugs* I keep building...
Hopefully you keep turning out some modelling, Theo. Your creativity would be wasted on just pre-painted stuff. On that note, looking forward to the trench build.
The KD stuff isn't really my bag (not that I'm offended or prudish about it, and I'll keep my specific objections to myself). I really like what you've done with the Bonecrabs, though - inspirational to the point that I need to make myself not dig my own out and start on them till I've finished a bunch of other half-done projects. The enforcers are also looking really good - nice work on the yellow striping on them. Any chance for a better-lit front view of Sir Vin of Diesel?
@dr.h, I'll still build things, but just getting tired of seeing the piles
@azazelx, the KD really isn't my thing either, but was just a good price and would help me practice flesh tones. I'll try and get a better pic of sir diesel tomorrow.
Well we have a full moon here yesterday today and I'm not sure of he rest of the week, but last night sucked big time at work. Lunar effects on the other employees, doctors releasing patients who then have heart attacks as they are getting into the wheelchair to be taken out to their car, and police bringing in crazy people and then leaving them only for the person to get belligerent and the county cops come to deal with him and find he has warrants out on him for violent crimes so the first set of cops have to come back . That combined with doctors releasing everyone to go home (well at least double the usual work load) and being stuck with the stupidest employee other than myself has killed my brain cells.
Friday I got to find new bits that will be part of my trench run. Got to clock in now.
sleep well matey!... full moon is even affecting quite often my own sleep... and I know my kids behave weird too...
I've recently discovered that even on ebay all x-wing stuff is ridiculously expensive... why???...licence? I think for so few minis in one starter package it is quite a big price tag... even used the stuff is still hard-core on the wallet...so if you get an enormous addition to your fleet I really hope it will be enormous...as you have so many sm its verging on the insane
No rest for me vik, I had to clock in at work and pretend to work . I don't know why you'd think the figs are that expensive. Most ships are $15.00 before discount stores, miniaturemarket has them for $9.99. You get the ship, a bunch of special cards for the ship (characters, upgrades and special rules), and usually three sheets of tokens for the model that it can use in game. In the beginning there were some shortages which people were gouging prices over, but now they have a good supply of ships out there.
I haven't heard back from the guy on the trade, but it's not ALL my marines for his fleet, he has about $600 retail worth of stuff, and I was offering to let him build the same amount retail of marines, maybe more.
Edit:
Pic for azazelx of Vin
And the plague guys from deadzone almost done.
And some pieces I got out of the junk at work.
The tubing is great, but what I like are the clamps that are holding them. It's a three tube clamp that will help enormously with the Death Star trentch build. I got a total of 6 of he clamp and two of the tubes. There's also the two tube clamp piece that's holding the purple part, I got two of those. The two tube clamp is for two different diameter tubes which will help things look a little different in the mix.
So it begins.....(cue techno music).......mortal Kom......wait wrong movie (cue symphonic music)......
A long long long time ago (I'm old) in a theatre not terribly far away (okay its gone and is now a parking lot ) a little boy watched a great movie about evil versus good (rebel scum are the bad guys trying to overthrow the rule of the imperium, we call them terrorist nerfherders ). Now with a re injection of modeling fun and the x-wing game out I want to bring back more of the fun, and what could be more fun than a trench run .
Anyway start of the build, the table will be done later. Why do all the really fun builds start with a trip to the hardware store? Because we needs a skeleton or he deathstar of course. 3/4" MDF(medium density fiberboard) had it cut while I was there, so the three pieces we will see right now are two at 5"x60" and one 8"x60". I'll be screwing these together shortly, but have to get my daughter from the bus stop ( first day of middle school )
Falcon and x-wing for scale. Cardboard box at end will be the target wall.
Vader eye perspective, I wanted a little maneuvering in the trench, but not much, also height of trench so most ships can be fully inside. I want to have rules for being down inside and being above. I hope to be able to make a clear plastic piece to transverse the trench so. Ship can fly over the top and its base be above, just for perspective.
Bits from work to be exhaust ports or possible target points. Any suggestions?
Just for clarity the ground will be flat, only the walls will get texture, this is to allow for smooth gameplay.
my nerd heart is filled with pride that someone out there is making a death star... even if it is "just" the trench....this is sooooo cooool!
I would actually make it smaller if we were aiming for correctness...as only barley three TIE fighters and three x-wing/y-wing had enough space to manoeuvre inside...
and the falcon was if we are true hardcore nerds only outside above the trench
but I like it... very much... to begin this project with that wooden skeleton is a good decision... I would still try to have texture on the ground tho... just flat but still with texture... the panels would need to be rather close and only flush...
also... have you thought about metal sheets underneath the textures? you could then give the model bases a magnetic coating and have them fly vertical even... for storing I would even think about a wall mounted trench system...
see? this is how it feels when someone is suggesting all such cool things that you get cold sweat how to get these done even if they´re so cool^^
*rubs hands* if I loose against this project I can still feel slightly as a winner as I want that project to get finished
after having a google search of the exhaust opening I think these things might actually work... tho you need that classic hex shaped frame.... RED will love the hex frame
Dear god every time I finally forget the horror that is the wet nurse, I randomly see it again, it's like some kind of curse! I dunno how I missed this blog, guess I'm a lazy searcher. I'll have to catch up, looks to be neat stuff!
@giraffex, I'll need some force to get this one completed, thanks
@Vik, I know it should be smaller, but the post I made earlier with a link had a 7.5" width, and I say "go big or go home ". Good idea with using the metal, but I'm too late in the game for this one. Also they make magnetic wall paint, its expensive but I could try something like that later.
@rogue wolves, I know, I can't wait to see what I come up with either who needs plans @graven, lunacy=theo also "that's no Lunacy "
@grimdork, think you've visited before.....I just keep changing the title around and I'm never on the same project for too long
Well the trench is forming up nicely. One side connected with the recessed screws and the inside skinned with plastic card. I got this done after the photo was taken.
Space in the trench will be taken up by wall mounted textures as well as other obstacles (like how the game has asteroids to avoid) maybe a satellite dish and definitely gun turrets .
All he kids are home now so I'll update later this week/end.
well... you will go big and you can still stay at home... cool situation
the wall paint is indeed expensive...and for my part I doubt if it actually is that magnetic enough to support such a model like the falcon... an x-wing or a tie I think will work... but more....naawwww...
@vik, the payment was extra gratuity, we all know whatever you leave behind in a bar becomes property of the bartender.....keys, coats, ex-girlfriends, your body @shaso, the sad thing is I'm more of a Trekkie than a star fars fan, I'll have to rewatch the video a few times to get the feel.
@dr. H, the guns I'll have to be part of this build I'm afraid, I gave up on them a while back.
@littletower, if you meet one of those weirdos let me know so I can be weary of them. I hear you can smell them before you see them.
@redharvest, yes it will be playable....if it ever gets completed. I usually only play on a 3x3 table with six asteroids and we just go to kill each other, we haven't tried missions yet, but they look fun.
@monkeytroll, bridges are definitely "in", as are bump outs from the walls, turbo lasers and maybe a jettisoned compacted cube of garbage with tentacles @vik, the paint is good enough hold for multiple magnets to hold. Had a friend use it on the wall of the kids room to paint roads and then mounted magnets to the underside o his kids hot wheels so he could roll around the walls. It was pretty sweet
Back from working at church today, about to leave for my full time gig, but pulled out some ideas for the trench.
The little half rounds are from a bunch of toys I bought at goodwill for less than $1. They held little toys called squinkies. I'm going to use them on the walls and connect some pipes to them like oxygen/water tanks. The green sheets are from a fire exit sign we just installed at church. The kit we bought came with red and green sheets , we went traditional red and they were going to pitch the green .
So I've got to come up with more ideas. I have bunches of those squinkies balls, so I could do a big section of them. I tried to wrap plastic card around those black pieces I showed for exhaust ports, but the glue isn't hold. I need thinner card. Also have to knock out about a dozen turrets .
Just have to remind myself it will all look good in the end .
Always remember that the ILM guys (the special effects crew created to make all the props for Star Wars) made all of their stuff in exactly the same way you are, with mountains of random stuff. Most of it was cheap, most of it was commonly found objects, plasticard or model bits, and in the end, at a distance and covered with paint, this model just those models will look awesome. Good luck!
@warboss, thanks that's extra reassuring , and welcome.
@cam, trying to work on it as much as possible......which is even less with school starting tomorrow @red, not only capital ships, but also a miniature board game (whispers of a future full scale game are circulating now)
Well not much to show, its my weekend off and we need to do shopping for groceries and school clothes (getting the kids more fall/winter clothes). I might try and see if the kids want to learn to play x-wing tonight as a family event, I think they are ready. They've only ever seen the cartoons as my copies of the original movies are all laserdisc (yes I'm a true nerd).
Last night was busy at work, and I HAD to help terry the trash man because of all the patients being discharged he was overloaded. It sucks to HAVE to help him especially when I NEED to go and clear the clinical areas which have all the cool gubbins .
Tube ends, the small ones come from the paper towel dispensers in some areas of the hospital, I have one of the housekeepers grabbing those for me for the foreseeable future. The big one comes from the huge rolls of bin liners we get in pretty frequently. Half the time they are busted in shipping, but I can just keep an eye out for them as needed. Together they look like a nice starship engine don't they? The big ones center hole is big enough for the a-wing to pilot through it on the way to the reactor core, so it might make it onto the board as a secondary objective.
Hard to see the transparent plastic rectangle in the picture, I put it on h green plastic to show it better. It's about 10" long and will be a nice bump out on the wall as its textured.
@commander Cain, were gamers, we all horde huge amounts of plastic/metal/resin @comrade, I think it'll work our just fine for my purposes, just need to focus my time better.
Well quick update, only had a half hour this morning before getting kids up for church.
Lollipop row. The round parts are half of the squinkies balls and the tubes down are waxed cardboard lollipop sticks I got a year ago from Walmart out of their baking section. The bottom piece is from an IV kit the hospital uses, but our pumps have a different connection so these are discarded out of all the kits. Hopefully once painted they will look like liquid or gas storage containers mounted to the walls of the deathstar.
One foot partly done, five more feet on this side to continue to detail.....plus the 6ft of base....plus the other side . Why is it I don't drink caffeine anymore
@Dr. H, yes the walls will get additional paneling to represent the different sections in the trench.
@Cam, thanks @graven, thanks as well. Could also use it as a days on sphere in Star Trek attack wing
Wife was napping , so I got the drill out and did some more work on the trench.
Added the other side of the trench and the end wall where the vent/target is at.
.
The wall has also been skinned with plastic card. Now the question remains should I place the vent on the vertical wall, or should I make a slanted floor section and mount it on that. I've seen both done so now I just need to decide.
Also my son got some hot wheels cars yesterday, and the blister packs they come in will soon become part of the build.
.
They will just be bump outs, but will make a little variance to the bland walls of the trench.
Way to use basically everything ever and make me feel bad about all of the potential hobby goods I've thrown away (not to mention land fills etc blah blah).
@redharvest, 34 years ago I was still licking the fingerpaint off my fingers, and I'm still fine now *twitch twitch
@dave, of course he's not afraid of the paint, what you don't see is Vader standing behind him threatening to throat hug him if he doesn't paint to golden demon standards @warboss, now I realize my design is too small. Thanks for the pics
@grimdork, I've always been a trash hoarder, must be the Jawa miniature I chewed on as a boy that has me picking up strange stuff all the time.
@dave again, glad your back. I can see those models and that game as a test run at a skirmish sized battle system with multipose stormtroopers. Problem is, who would want to be the rebels
Little update, started classes this morning, so little time.
First hot wheels car blister bump out attached.
Medical device blister packing bump out attached, had to improvise something to cover the open end. I had one of these foam barrels nearby, hopefully I'll be able to dress it up better later.
Still undecided on the vertical or horizontal vent though.
theo... I think you should go for that horizontal vent... after all the torpedo's took an arch ... in the 3d animation as well as in the actual fire sequence...
the surface detail looks nice... you´re probably using the same stuff the crew used originally... tho if I were you I would mix the elements a bit more randomly to not hove actual sectors that much?...maybe you find a rhythm of your bits that would work continuously on both sides?...
also... will you add a bit of the actual death star outer surface? a wider rim to the trench?....
@dave, layers, YES we ogres have layers, just like onions and death stars , next on the list of will get to it sooner or later @vik, I'm leaning towards the horizontal vent as well. But what do you mean a wider rim on the trench @giraffex, duhn duhn duhn Da duh duhn Da duh duhn . Glad someone liked the pic, I thought it was terrible, but it was from my iPhone.
Got a few more bits and bobs at work tonight along with ......moar foam (wow I must be slap happy I've used the laughing emoticon alot in this post ). The stack of foam is almost as tall as I am now. Now to fin a use for it .
Working a church tomorrow morning, might get a tiny bit done in the am, we'll see.
There is this really good youtube tutorial from the channel called "NerdyNummies" where they show you how to make a really detailed death star trench cake. I know it is a cake tutorial, but if you skip ahead to the detailing part I think it will definitely help give you some ideas on how to get it looking good and death stary
Death Star Tutorial -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiA0noycvSw
When I watched the extras DVD they spoke of how they made the death star channel, basically they bought loads of battle ship kits and stuck them on so basically get sticking theo
@LDD, No you stick it (sorry read that wrong)
@rogue wolves, I'll have to watch when I'm not hungry @dave, curves are unavoidable, I'll have to find someone's print out of the surface that's a quick fix for a mat. It's $3-5 to order and then print out many times and mount. It looks very similar to that pic.
On my way out the door, but had. Mantic delivery yesterday.
A few months ago if you signed up for their newsletter they said they'd send you a free deadzone accessory sprue. It arrived last night while I was at work. Really nice, also they've stepped up their game with promotional flyers. They look really good. Might take better pics of those later.
Edit: miniaturemarket being on my way home from working at church .
Well at least I was able to increase the fleet on both sides of the force for when the trench is completed.
Z95, E-wing, Tie Defender and Tie Phantom. I'm all caught up now with the releases...well with one of each at least, more will join eventually. Also since my purchase was over $25.00 and I was an online order picked up in the store I got to spin on their prize wheel, I got a free movie , choose punisher, I had looked at it while waiting for my order to get pulled, so it seemed fated to take home with me .
Yeah, I'm certainly glad MM is at least a couple of hours away from me. I could drive there, but the only hobby related store that's 'on the way' to anything around here is a hobby lobby :p
A - He would never get any work done come on he is surrounded by models
B - His wages would be spent before he even left the store on monday
C - Plus all the overtime he would be putting in he would never see his family don't forget they would not see the benefit of that as it would be paid for with merchandise
@comrade, I have a small fleet compared to others, just check out the thread over in the x-wing forum "my fleet after 2years" to see everyones @LDD, right on all accounts, plus I'd be fired for ripping open all the toys and playing with them when I should be working.
@Vik, I used to work/manage comic book stores years ago...all did not end well, I have over 20 long boxes o comics in storage
@LDD, nothing to be jealous of this week I'm afraid , no fun time since last post.
@Azazelx, thanks, but slow times I'm afraid.
@grimdork, but glad, I think I'm in the gaming Mecca. Local flgs in each direction around me, as well as comic shops, vintage toy shops, train shops and michaels, hobby lobby, Joann's, and mom and pop hobby stores . Too bad I'm poor.
@dave, there is no may......only do(should be heard in yoda voice)
@LDD, there is no safe route, see my answer to grimdork @shaso, yes, I has all the Star Wars
Well no work on the trench, this week has been horrible with work and school. Seriously why do online classes expect you to try and collaborate as a group when everyone is doing online classes because their schedules are not conducive to regular timetables .
On a happy note, the biggest headache at my work quit. She is a twenty something year old single mom with half a brain cell who's first conversation with me was how she needed to get new batteries for her rabbit (vibrator) because she wears them out so quick , this was stated loudly(as everything she says is loud), and in front of everyone else in the office 9-10 people at he time. She gave her 2weeks, but this weekend was supposed to be her last days, she called out on both days leaving us short handed all weekend. She will not be missed. I am not racist, but she is from a Eastern European country which has a strong population here in St. Louis, most of whom I have had good dealings with, but she and two others on the crew from the same country drive me crazy.
So being short handed I was once again FORCED to do trash , easiest job there is and can find all the good stuff . Saturday was great pickings, yesterday nada.
Aside from the usual bits and bobs I found some clear plastic packing materials, they'll look great on the side of the trench, along with some tubing and nifty plastic widgets that snap onto tubing.
Well off to work.....again.
After such a cool summer (naturally cool, record lows), the St. Louis heat is back, all weekend and most of this week will be just below 100 degrees with a heat index over 100 and closer to 110.
@graven, , shared that pic over in the x-wing forum, others had linked the site, but I generally don't follow links.
@shaso, there's no sound in space till the energy beams hit your ship.
@LDD, I'll always accept free bits .
Well not much time for anything fun. Completely wiped out, and am about to leave for church work. Snapped some pics of where I'm at right now.
Hopefully this weekend will give me some time. I've worked the last 12 days straight, Saturdays my first day off and here's still school work to do.
Keep at it, Theo.
As Red says, there is plenty of time. But if you are worried about not finishing it time, I would suggest working from the vent end of the trench.
As it's an almost never-ending trench you can stop your piece at any time and take photos that don't show the unfinished end. The judges will never know... or they would if they don't read this... or that I'm one of the judges... you get the idea anyway.
@hk1x1, sorry, but you'll have to wait a while longer....probably a long while.
@Dr. H, , when I get time I'll start there......time, how I miss that.
@cam, spray cans at the ready @red, likes like 4 hours of free time from now @warboss, I can't work that quickly/manically.....unless I pull an "over the hedge" squirrel on caffeine @dave, burnout is already here
@shaso, atmosphere...you want me to put plants on the deathstar?
Sorry for long delay, but that's how things are going. No time for fun since the birthday party marathon, but I've been getting supplies like crazy. One of the ladies at work is helping gather stuff, I remind her of her son when he was creative and she was younger .
Vik loves cardboard, so this should make him happy. The tubes are the cores from rolls of stickers we use at the hospital to label medicines. Also tubes from the paper towel dispensers and the big container of Gatorade that I've gone through. Should make for some interesting terrain, even if just more water towers .
Well off to the grandparents to help out some more again before going into work .
@shaso, what would someone put on their résumé to become an interior designer for the deathstar? Understands Fung shui, but ensures there is still enough random big things around the room to hurl at rebel scum.
Well quick run to grandparents, they had places to go so no long time "helping" today.
I was picking up some heavy card stock that poppy had in storage for my wife. Got three bundles/reams of paper, 70,80 and 100 pound weight, I'm keeping a bit as a shipping tax . Got home and had an idea, been a while since I got any ideas, but the short larger diameter tube fits the black rollers I got last week.
Looks like a nice fit for the base of a water tower. The lip of the black plastic roller sticks out just the tiniest bit, which the paper almost completely covers .
The smallest tube has an inside diameter that perfectly fits the base of a 25mm round base, which means that razorback turrets and predator turrets fit it perfectly.
