It's more historical, but fictional. More along the lines of what you'd see in the movies than real history. Not really "wierd west" like games like Deadlands or steampunk, I felt like that's kind of already been done.
I wouldn't expect a history lesson from the game, just fun shootouts
Sad you weren't able to be at Cold Wars so I could play a demo, but I downloaded the rules a week or so ago and they look great. Was glad to see the kickstarter and jumped right in!
Any thoughts on what might happen if you totally smash your initial goal?
I wish I had a 1000.... I have a great idea for a faction that would fit right in with the theme! (they could be part of a future expansion, what do I know)
Thanks! I hope to make it out to other cons when I can, next year when I have a real product line going I'm planning to do the bigger ones like GenCon and Adepticon. I've just never really been much of the con-going type till now, so I just don't know which ones are out there and/or worth going to, etc. I'm looking into NJcon, might do that one.
I do have plans for "stretch goals" too, after I reach the first goal, the next one will be $6000 to do a 3rd box set with a Native American themed gang/tribe. After that, $9000 for mexicans, after that I'd be focusing on add-on blister packs of extra figures to go with each gang, and other themes too like a 2 pack of "town drunks" or "gold miners", etc. I still have other plans for other box sets, but I think having these 4 will make a good starting point. But anyway, in the podcasts I listened to and other research I did, they say you should just focus on the main goal at first and then update the kickstarter page with the new ones after you beat your goal. Don't know why, but I figured I'd follow their lead
And, you can still suggest a character or gang if you like, but I can't promise it will make it into the game. Only the backers that show me the money would be guaranteed But anyway that said, probably a good 75% of the game was built around suggestions from fans, so if someone has a really great idea it definitely won't be ignored
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just checked it again, almost half way there!
Automatically Appended Next Post: And now it's past 50%! whee!
I'll be pretty psyched if we can reach the goal within 24 hours
You can still get the book if you like. I added that to the FAQ at the bottom.
Basically everything is $30. The box sets, 2 buildings or the rulebook. So you can swap out stuff if you want, like if you did $90 you could get both box sets and a rulebook instead of the 2 buildings. I didn't want to add too many different backer levels or have multiples of the same price point and make things confusing, so at the end I was going to contact everyone individually and ask them what they want exactly for the money they spent. They can just take the default, or change things up if they want to.

I'll probably just bump my contribution up to the next level so I get the signed rulebook.... Once I figure out how to do it, it looks like I can change my contribution and reward independantly.
They make stuff for other genres too. Nice, cheap and sturdy. I own a few of their kits already and I'll be selling their buildings individually in my online store soon too.
Later on tonight I'll be updating the kickstarter page with some photos of the buildings.
So far I got the big saloon, 1 of the 2 story buildings and the gallows for myself. You have to glue on all of the window and door frames and railings, and the kits are packed in plain plastic bags with no instructions, but they don't really need them, it's all pretty easy to figure out. I just used plain old white/pva glue
Sarissa is another company that does great wood buildings too, but they're in the UK so I went with GameCraft, easier shipping, etc since they're in the US. I'll eventually add Sarissa's buildings to my store too when they get their wholesale stuff all set up probably in April or so.
Awesome, I'm loving all the Kickstarters cropping up lately. I'm not a huge wild-west theme fan, but you almost have me reaching for my Amazon Payments already
A couple tips on the Kickstarter page itself:
- I would add a direct link to your rules .pdf, because they are really quite good and with excellent production values as well. That always makes people more comfortable about where their money is going. Though... is that a ladies posterior on the cover?
- I would add an image of the game in progress so people can see the miniatures and terrain all painted up and enticing.

First off, congrats on getting so far so fast.
Secondly, we have done a lot of cons. Too many it feels like at times... But if I had to cut back, and we probably will be, GAMA Trade Show, Adepticon, and Gencon are on my 'Always Do' list.

Thanks, those were the ones I was thinking of.. also what about Origins? or is that more like a video game con now?
sparkywtf wrote:I just have to add... I found a typo in your rules...
I've been fixing typos in that thing since day 1 hehe .. where was it? I can update it real quick.
Some day when I'm able to get a big rulebook made, I'll hire a proofreader
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and.. yay! less than 1000 to go I already posted some details on the first stretch goal, if I can get to $6000 I'll do a 3rd box set for a native american gang. Getting the concept art done right now and hopefully that will be done in the next couple of days.
Oh, and, I did add an image of a game board at the very bottom. I'm also about to add some pics of the gamecraft buildings
And for the rules, I wanted to send people to the whole website first to get the rules, so they can check out other stuff like the cards, or campaign test rules, etc. I was just thinking if they go to the actual site they can see that it's legit and the game is already out there.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks I'll fix the typo there's probably a bunch more in there too, every time I update it I find more.
So you mentioned the first strech goal, and with it the third box set. My question to you is what level do I have to support at to get the third box set to...
Any level You could just do the $30 level and say "I want the injuns" Or, if you do $90 you can get all 3, instead of 2 + 2 buildings. So, at least $90 would be what you want to do if you want to get all 3, if that's what you mean. Each set is $30
Dammit, taking all my money... now I want to pledge another 30 but I really shouldn't... silly college needing my money.
Congrats though on the success on the kickstarter. Just checked an you need less than 600 dollars to reach the goal, and it hasn't even been 2 days yet.
Origins is a good con run by great folks, but it's minis scene wasn't big enough for me to give it a definite 'yep gotta do it' with the costs involved to get there.
And with all the folks saying they cant/won't go because of the date change this year makes it really iffy for us.
Wow, the sculpts look great! I think it's a fantastic idea to do this Kickstarter and get the second box set out .
The demo I got at DakkaCon showed this game to be easy, fun, and it looks really affordable. Enough so that it'd be easy to get enough to provide both sides of a fight.
Will have to think about if I can contribute, as I'm stretched into a lot of projects I haven't gotten to at the moment. But I just wanted to vouch that the game was fun, even with other companies' models for the demo, and with its' own models I think it'll be fantastic
And yeah, the whole whole goal from the beginning was to make it fast & fun and just a few models, but scales up well enough that if you really want an army of cowboys you can still do that too
I'm working out some squad based rules too for large games, but they will be more for the sci fi game I do next.. but that's a long ways off.. like a year or more. But I want to eventually get to the point where I can release a bunch of different models for different games each month.. and the games all use the same rules, just different skills & weapons & settings.
Once I get 5 or 6 good starter sets for BWG and a nice bunch of add on 2-packs the next big thing I do will be horses and those will be a mostly plain horse, and 2 versions of the rider.. 1 on foot and the other mounted with the saddle on his legs so you just glue that one onto the horse. That way I can reuse the horses for other things like pulling coaches full of bank robbers

Congratulations on the immensely successful campaign. Fully funded in two days and still going strong. As an aged Sith once said..."Impressive. Most impressive.."
Working hard now on the indians, and planning out the 4th gang. I also want to put together a mock-up of the box and stuff like that to show off how it will look.
Working hard now on the indians, and planning out the 4th gang. I also want to put together a mock-up of the box and stuff like that to show off how it will look.
It would be cool to see what minis come in each box, unless its up somewhere already and Im missing it...
I haven't even gotten that far yet The only minis I have sculpted so far are what's on the page. Then I have concept art for the Vigilance Committe on there too. Getting art done for the Indians now. This whole project is so that I can afford the sculpts which come out to $300-$400 per fig, so I won't be able to get anything else sculpted until I get the Kickstarter funds, and that probably won't be until the beginning of May.
So, i'll have the Clancy Gang done first, and ready for sale in June since those sculpts are already paid for, the other sets will be more like August. It takes a long time to get everything made, a couple weeks for the sculpt, a month or so to get the master metal figs, another few weeks to get the production molds done and production figs ready to box up.. but then I have a good 6 weeks to wait for Pro Painting for the box art, and then throw in all the time I just have to waste sitting around waiting for the mailman. So anyway, that's why it takes so long
In a tiny holding pattern right now, waiting for the 5th Clancy Gang sculpt and the concepts for the Bloodwolf Tribe. The leader of the tribe is gonna be a medicine man (counts-as Doctor) and one of the models will be a big mean wolf with sharp teeth it'll be considered a henchman for the gang, and stats will be mostly in melee combat, quickness & strength. I thought the wolf would be cool for something different.
Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to do artwork for the character cards, or a model photo. I can get the artwork done quicker, since I'll have to wait a good 6 weeks for the pro-painted figures... but then, I have to wait for the models anyway for the box art photos.
I really like the look of everything that has already been developed for this game. And excited to see what's in store for this game. Just wanted to know if it's possible to Donate for UK Dakkanauts?
Hmm.. as far as I know you should be able to back it if you're in the UK. I think I've had a few. I think it's just like buying anything online with a credit card or whatever.
Wow. As of my last post, you were about $500over your goal. now, you're almost $1000 over.
Something tells me we're going to see more than just a Native American gang!
yeah! Every time I see a new backer, I cackle with glee inside a little.
I did just make a change today, I put a limit on all of the backing levels that include the buildings. For one, so that the GameCraft folks aren't super overwhelmed when I order 200 buildings, and also to make it seem like it's a little more special for the early backers. That might effect the "bottom line" so to speak but I thought it would make things better in the long run.
Hoping they can finish the artwork for the next gang soon.. I'll probably have them jump right into the next one afterwards
Planning ahead now.. I'm going to do the 4 box sets first (or 5 if I get a $1000 backer ) and then a few 2-pack blisters of extra figures for each gang (1 professional or 2 henchmen), and then move on and do a new starter, then go back and forth between starters and blister sets.
hehe .. I'm going to be selling their kits on my website too eventually. Also talking to Sarissa Precision about their building kits too. Eventually I hope to build out my online store to carry everything you need for wild west gaming
For what it's worth....
I doubt I'll ever play your game in the long term. I might catch some starter games at conventions, but that'll be about it.
It's got nothing to do with your game. While I'm not into the Wild West genre, the fact is that I like your game enough that I WOULD play. Alas, my regular gaming group is 40k ONLY, with no interest in anything else and my other group is an RPG/board game only group.
I've got no time for a third, sadly. : (
...and I gave up "collecting" long ago.
That said, I very much like your game and want to see you succeed. That's why I've taken part in your thread as I have. I've got some suggestions that I hope you find useful/interesting.
1) You need a fat guy. Everyone needs a fat guy. : ) A Doc mini would be good, as would a wrestler. If you made him a "leader" type, he could be a former circus performer, like a "strong man" or something.
2) Make a female Native American model. It was pretty out of place back then, so it would stick out pretty nicely. You also might see some cross-sales, since I can only imagine such a model to be rare.
3) I'm hoping a good kickstarter launch will cause you to have mounted figs sculpted. DEFINITELY include one with the native American boxed set. I'd make an individual, too, since many Native tribes took to horseback readily.
4) Soldiers. Are you making soldiers? I hope you're making soldiers. : )
5) Other henchmen models could include:
Bartender
Entertainer (piano player, etc. - something with a derby)
Make some taller and shorter stature models. Not everyone is of uniform height.
Blacksmith
NP, my gaming group is the same way. It's all GW and mostly fantasy. Been a long time coming but the fells are finally picking up Warmahordes now. Usually someone will bring by a new game, someone will play with them and tell em it was fun, then go back to 40k I doubt I'll even get to play my own game much outside of cons & demos
There will be fat guys I really want to cover all walks of life. I'd like to do a Boss Hogg kind of guy too I'll be mixing in ladies too, and even planning and all girl gang.. but one thing I tell the artists is I want them to look attractive but not be strippers. Not going for the barely dressed comic book style, trying to keep things PG13 and halfway respectable.
For horses, the eventual plan is to do a series of plain horse models, and then package them with a rider on foot and also another version with the saddle sculpted to his legs, so you glue that onto the horse, and if he wants to get off the horse you swap it with the figure on foot. Then with the generic horses, I can reuse them for other things like big stage coach models and that sort of thing... some day.
There will be lots of soldiers eventually, but not so much civil war types because the game takes place in 1890. But there will be soldiers that fit the time period. There will probably be some mexican soldier types too for that gang. And also for the mexicans I want to make a mariachi band with rifles hidden in their guitar cases, and a masked el luchador wrester Not all in the starter kit, but mixed between that and the extra figs. I'll need to do some kind of special figure every year for Cinco de Mayo
I've never really played any Wildwest games before, but Im definitely going to pledge sometime over the next week or two to support your cause.
Have you thought about having a limited edition kickstarter model produced to add too some of the deals if you surpass your 2nd goal?
The people behind the Wreck-Age kickstarter did this to help go from $5.000 to their secondary goal of $10.000, i think it helped attract more interest in their kickstarter and it definitely gave them more start up capitol for their game.
I'd like to do a special limited mini, but I don't know if I can. It costs around $600 to get a mini done start to finish between sculpting and molds and everything, so that's a good chunk out of the funding for something I wouldn't be selling after the fact (being a limited item). Would seem silly to make a mini and just have like 100 made and then never again.
But I do have some other goodies planned. I'm going to get some custom dice made with a little sheriff star on the #6 spot. When I get to $5000 I'm going to announce that everyone that backed over $30 will get 1D6 for every $1500 made in the end.
And I also have another sculpt I haven't revealed yet based on a character from a TV show that I was going to give free to every $30+ backer if I get to $10,000. But he'll be for sale after, so it's not limited but you get him as a free bonus fig
sparkywtf wrote:Honestly... I want a gang of.... female entertainers....
They seem they would fit in so amazingly.
I can picture that...female "entertainers" (period correct of course) moonlighting as a group of bounty hunters, gunfighters, etc.
OP, I really like the ideas you are putting out. With the right support and a bit of luck I can see this taking off. I cant speak for European countries but the people in the US, and to a smaller degree Mexico, really love the wild west.
Actually.. just based on how many figures I've already sold, about 90% of them have all gone to UK, Germany & France. Which is great, but I do kind of worry about shipping charges being so high. 1 little blister to the UK costs something like $3.70 for basic air mail. Hoping I can find some distributors over there once I get the starter sets done.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has backed the game so far. I'm very excited to see this succeed in just 48 hours! But let's not stop there! I've just updated the Kickstarter project page created some stretch goals for the project, which are:
STRETCH GOAL #1 - $6000 - If we can reach $6000, I'll will be able to fund a third box set. This set will be The Bloodwolf Tribe, a Native American themed gang. Concept art for this gang is still in production, but I have one figure sketched out so far, shown below. I'll update the image as I get more!
BONUS - If we make it to $6000, every backer who pledged $30 or more will recieve specially made, custom Sheriff Dice at the rate of 1 D6 per $1500 generated. So, that will be 4 dice to start with, and the more we can make the more you will get! These dice are ONLY being created for this Kickstarter campaign and will never, ever be available ever again. These dice will be 16mm with a 6-pointed sheriff start on the #6 side. When we have a sample we'll show it here, for now, here is what the emblem will look like:
STRETCH GOAL #2 - $9000 - If we can reach this goal, we will be able to fund a fourth box set. This set will be The Bandidos Mexicanos, a Mexican themed gang. Concept art will be produced and I'll add images as soon as I have them. Expect to see plenty of criss-crossing bullet belts, federales, machetes and sombreros!
BONUS: If we make it to $9000, every backer who pledged $30 or more will receive The Norwegian for FREE. This Hired Gun can be added to any gang, and will have stats similar to a gang leader, with unique weapons not available to normal characters in the game. Sculpted & designed by Pedro Ramos, The Norwegian is based on a character from the AMC show "Hell on Wheels". This model will be available for sale on our website later, however he's being offered free to Kickstarter backers. He'll be available probably around the same time as the Vigilance Committee figures.
Thank you again for your support! I can't wait to see how far we can take this and start bringing you all the best Wild West figures around!
So.... we just reached $6000 this morning, that means the Native American gang is a go! I'm hoping to have the rest of the concept art in the next couple of days. I also have another artist who will be starting on the concepts for the Mexican gang in the beginning of April, so I won't have pics for them until the end of next week if not the beginning of the following. Also waiting on a sample pic of the sheriff dice from the manufacturer, hopefully they'll send me that soon. I'll probably have to get them without the word "sheriff" in the middle of the star, when I shrunk it down and printed it out, the letters were barely readable.
Since the terrain/building kits are a more limited thing, and the $90 level with the kits was sold out, I made a new $90 backing level where you just get 3 starter sets, instead of 2 sets + 2 buildings.
This whole Kickstarter thing just amazes me. Not my campaign but all the gaming projects on there.. I think it's really the beginning of a new future for the gaming industry. There's some really cool projects out there getting funded way beyond their goals.
Thanks! A the end I'm going to email everyone to find out what sets they all want exactly, so remind me then who the wife is and I can ship both of your sets in 1 box
Glad to see this came off for you Necros, Sadly I have no one I could play that with at the moment otherwise I'd have pledged, will keep an eye on how Blackwater Gulch develops mind.
Necros wrote:Thanks! A the end I'm going to email everyone to find out what sets they all want exactly, so remind me then who the wife is and I can ship both of your sets in 1 box
Will do. Thanks for making a game I can get into with the wife...maybe even our older son too. Let us know where (or when if its not available yet) we can see whats in each box so we can pick.
Well I will definitely jump in before the 15th. This looks awesome! Cannot wait. I'm going to pitch this to my little club on Tuesday. Its mostly high school boys (not a ton of scratch), but we've got an engineer and a couple parents involved too (after school club, I'm the sponsoring teacher).
If you get a few people from your club interested, you can do one big pledge or if you do separate ones, let me know who else pledged from the club and I can ship everything together.. You might save a bit on shipping that way.
I recently added a FAQ listing at the bottom of the Kickstarter page with estimated shipping charges. Since there's so many different things offered and some of it can be bulky or heavy, I had to do some math and come up with a list that covers just about everyone everywhere.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west
Next, I'm still waiting on more artwork. I should have the rest of the Bloodwolf Tribe soon, and the Bandidos next week. I just got a sample pic from Chessex for the Sheriff Dice, here's what they will look like
If the Kickstarter ended today, I'd be ordering 600 dice! But with 19 days to go and around $8400 raised so far, I'll probably be ordering a LOT more than that. Which is good, the more I order, the cheaper they cost to get made
I've been getting a lot of requests from people to add more spaces with the building kits. I do want to keep them as a special thing for the early backers, however I recently added a new backing level of $150 for 3 starter sets and 4 buildings. I did that last night around midnight, and they were sold out by the time I got up in the morning! But, some people at other backing levels moved into the new slot, so there's some other openings for now if you hurry
I'm pretty confident we're going to reach the next stretch goal. Once $9000 is reached I will be announcing some other new stretch goals that will include some nice new goodies, so stay tuned
yeah they came out better than I thought. I'm going to be ordering a whole lot extra just for me so I can have them for demos at cons and stuff.
I thought about selling custom dice like that just in general, but I think they're a little expensive, more than I would personally want to pay if I were buying them at a store. it would be like $10-12 retail for 6 whole dice. They work better as a free promo thing
If we can get to $18000 that will be 12 dice for everyone
Necros wrote:yeah they came out better than I thought. I'm going to be ordering a whole lot extra just for me so I can have them for demos at cons and stuff.

Out of curiosity who are you having make the dice, $2 a dice even at retail seems pretty steep. Last order of custom dice I did cost me 62 cents a peice.
They're from Chessex.. As usual my math is off, more like $10 for 6, but still
I was just doing the math as cost x5 which seems to be the norm, since if you sell to a distributor they want 60% off, but yeah if I just sold them on my own I could charge much less. Either way though I think it's more fun as a kickstarter freebie
You should offer to let anyone in the Kickstarter that is already receiving dice order extra dice at $x each. Like you said, the more you order, the cheaper they get. So, you could even eke out some profit there, while allowing people to get a larger selection of dice.
Also, as I recall from the time I ordered them, Chessex will allow you to use different dice, so long as the design is static. Maybe those extra dice could be different, so as to differentiate between the "Kickstarter" dice and the "additional purchase" dice, making the Kickstarter dice that much cooler.
Dammit, why are you making this so difficult for me? lol
Also, yeah I will probably allow people to order extra dice. 6 dice for everyone right now .. hoping it will go much higher
Here's the newest news right now...
Just another quick note to announce that we just passed $9000! So, it's safe to say the Bandidos Mexicanos will be sailing up the river to Blackwater Gulch very soon!
I've added 2 new backing levels now... $120 for all 4 starter sets, and also $180 for all 4 starter sets plus 4 GameCraft buildings (limited to 4 backers, 1 sold already!). Since I'm not able to change the text in the different backing levels, I also wanted to add that if you're already locked in at another level that's limited and you don't want to lose your spot, and it says you only get 2 sets but you want more, you can just increase your pledge by $30 for each additional starter set that you want.
I'll be updating the main Kickstarter page later this evening, but the next set of stretch goals I have planned will be... at $12,000 everyone who pledged $30 or more will get the Bounty Hunter Gang Leader figure for free in addition to everything else. At $15,000 everyone who pledged $30 or more will also get the Gambler Gang Leader figure too. Since these figures are available now, if you already have them you have the option of getting extras if you want to give them to friends, or you can get store credit for future purchases ($8 per figure), or as credit to put toward your shipping charges. Up to you!
This is growing faster than I ever expected. Thank you all so much!

Necros wrote:And within the last 2 or 3 minutes one of the backers switched from their $30 pledge to $1000.. !
...which makes all your really expensive backing levels sold out - get some new ones up! there might be others willing to spend ridiculous amounts, and we'd all like the extra freebies associated with that oh and on that note, pledge made
And yes I agree it would be cool to have those expensive levels opened up again so I can make some more money ... but I really want the people that bought into them to feel special and entitled
In all honesty, I think those backers would rather see you do well and get more high levels opened up.
Maybe do *different* levels. Instead of naming a character/gang/etc after them, maybe a major town? Famous battle? Something else?
You've done spectacular, so far. I'm sure you could think of something appropriate.
Eric
Automatically Appended Next Post: BTW, you're officially over 300% as of right now! LOL
Pledge has been made, but you already knew that! Can't wait to see some more finished models; the Norwegian looks amazing. I'll try to get my friends in on this.
Awesome to see this growing so fast. As soon as I have a day off (had 1 day off in the last 20, likely going to be at least 9 more before I get another) Im going to download the free rules, proxy some minis and give it a go.
If the budget allows may bump by pledge a bit too.
Honestly, I had a secret master plan for the limited backing levels. And it won't be secret if I tell! But ... what I was going to do was the day or so before the end I was going to add a new update (that gets emailed to all backers) somewhere along the lines of "OMG I just upped the amount of limited terrain packages so upgrade now!!2" .. and then hopefully a bunch of folks will impulse-buy a higher level Though I do think I'll leave the $1000 alone, since that's the most special of all.
Finally got painted pics for the Gambler Gang Leader
The Gambler Gang Leader is available now! One of our Deluxe figures, he comes with a separate weapon sprue with options for two different types of pistols, a bowie knife, a hand axe and also a hand full of cards for fun.
You can order him now from our online store at http://www.gangfightgames.com for $8. Or, you can get him for FREE if you back our Kickstarter campaign and pledge $30 or more, if the campaign reaches our 4th stretch goal of $15,000 (which isn't too far away now!)
Gambler looks awesome, ordered mine just now. Looking forward to the box sets when they arrive; the downside to being on the opposite side of the pond is the shipping costs (both for you and me!)
Thanks And yeah, I hate international shipping :( I've had a UK distributor contact me recently though so I'm hoping once I really get the box sets rolling I'll be able to get stuff across the river a lot easier.

Congrats on UK distro! US Distro is rather hard, and UK is even harder for a US based company
I've gotten a few requests to offer painting services for your gangs. I don't have the spare time to paint everything for you, so I got a deal set up with Golem Painting Studio to handle it. Golem does professional painting for a lot of big names in the industry, and now they can do your gang too! I added a new backing level of $100 for pro-painting services. This price includes 1 gang set of your choice, painting services and all shipping involved. If you would like more than 1 gang done, simply add $100 to your pledge for each extra gang. As they tend to have a large back log of work, please allow an additional 6-8 weeks for delivery.
Next, I updated the new stretch goals. Now instead of getting the Bounty Hunter at $12,000 and Gambler at $15,000, I changed it to allow you to choose the figure of your choice at $12,000 and at $15,000 you get both.
My first with kickstarter, too, Caty.
Funny thing about it is that I was so taken with the game, models, and Necros' enthusiasm that I had to support it. Due to the nature of the the game groups I'm in, I may never actually get an opportunity to play the game, unless I'm at a tournament (not likely) where a demo or something's being played.

I'm in the same boat, my game group is pretty much all GW and is just now starting to get into Warmahordes. Other games have come and been played a month or 2 then everyone gets an idea for a new campaign and it's back to GW
I already have more pledged now than I ever thought I would. I have enough to cover the extra sculpts from the higher level backers too so that will be a total of 5 box sets and 3 extra hired guns that will be released within the next 6 months or so (and earlier for the Kickstarters).
I've also decided I'll be making blister "expansion packs" for each gang, instead of doing separate unrelated "generic wild west" models. So I'll plan to do packs of 2 henchman to match each gang, and 1 professional. The box sets will come with 3 professionals (well 2 + the leader) and 2 henchmen. So in time I hope to have about 20 or so figures for each gang with 1 of each profession and the rest being a variety of different henchmen. But, people can still use whatever minis they want for their gang members.
Also just starting to plan out the big "2nd edition" rulebook now. Rules will pretty much stay the same, just going to make it big and pretty and full color, and include the campaign rules and the large scale battle rules I've been working on, with lots of hobby stuff too like painting guides or terrain building tutorials. I may do another Kickstarter later on for the rulebook, to raise money for artwork and other things I skipped the first time around, like hiring a proof-reader The rules will still be free online in a more basic format, the big book will be for sale in stores. I'll also have test/preview rules going ahead of time too. If I do another Kickstarter for the rulebook, I gotta come up with more cool goodies.. but what's cooler than sheriff dice?
I was thinking that too, but there's nothing really emblem-y that says "outlaw" .. was thinking of maybe something like a line drawing of a guy with a scarf pulled up over his face.. or a not-yosemite-sam looking face. or maybe Colt 45 dice?

Sadly most of the games I like, I have a hard time getting my group to play them with me. I'm more into fun neat looking things then being competitive.
Posted a new update today since I've been getting lots of questions about the different backing levels...
Howdy folks! Since I started this Kickstarter campaign, some things have changed thanks to all of your support (thanks!), so I thought it would be a good idea to do an update explaining the different backing levels better.
First off, I refer to "starter sets" or "box sets" in different places. I should have used a standardized term to avoid confusion, but these things are both one and then same. Each set will come with 5 miniatures, 5 character cards, 5 plastic bases, a quickstart rulebook and a plastic case for safe storage and transport of your men.
Next, here is some updated text for the different backing levels. Kickstarter won't allow me to change what's in there once people start pledging, so better to just clarify it all here
$10 - The game will be dedicated to you! You will have your name in the rulebook's credits and you may select any one figure of your choice from any starter box set. (Note: you must pledge at least $30 to receive the extra free stuff)
$20 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any three figures of your choice from any starter box set. (Note: you must pledge at least $30 to receive the extra free stuff)
$30 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any one starter box set (No building kits included).
$45 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any one starter box set in addition to one GameCraft Wild West building kit.
$60 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any two starter box sets (No building kits included).
$75 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any two starter box sets in addition to one GameCraft Wild West building kit.
$90 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any two starter box sets in addition to two GameCraft Wild West building kits.
$90 - NEW - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any three starter box sets (No building kits included).
$100 - NEW - Pro-painted gangs! Select the starter box set of your choice and have all 5 figures painted by industry professional painters at Golem Painting Studio! If you would like more than 1 set done, you may simply add $100 per gang to your pledge. This price includes shipping. Please allow an additional 6-8 weeks for delivery. Models will be painted at a very nice table-top quality, for examples of their work visit their website at www.golempaintingstudio.co.uk
$120 - NEW - You will have your name in the rulebook and you will receive all four starter box sets (No building kits included).
$125 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any two starter box sets in addition to four GameCraft Wild West building kits.
$150 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any three starter box sets in addition to four GameCraft Wild West building kits.
$180 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you will receive all four starter box sets in addition to four GameCraft Wild West building kits.
$250 - You will have your name in the rulebook and you may select any two starter box sets in addition to six GameCraft Wild West building kits plus an autographed hardcover rulebook.
$500 - Everything in the $250 level above, and in addition you will a have character in the game world named after you, or you can make up the name of your choice. You may also provide their back story and game stats if you wish, and a new figure will be sculpted in your likeness (if possible). This character will exist in the game's history and fiction and will never die, unless you would like him or her to go down in a blaze of glory. This character will be added to the game as a new product at a later date (after these first 2 sets are made), and is not included as part of this Kickstarter project.
$1000 - Like the $500 level above, however instead of just one character, you have the option to create an entire gang / faction for the game. You can provide the story/idea/theme for the gang and name the members. This gang will be made as a new box set at a later date, figures will be sculpted based on your ideas and the set will be sold online and in fine game stores worldwide, right along with our other products. The only condition being that your gang should fit with the theme for the rest of the game, reflecting a historical, yet fictional WIld West setting. This gang will be added to the game as a new product at a later date (after these first four sets are made), and is not included as part of this Kickstarter project.
I think that about covers it! Keep in mind you may also increase your pledge without leaving the bracket you are in, for example if you are set to get 2 starter box sets and buildings and don't want to give up your "sold out" spot, you can add an extra $30 to your pledge for each additional gang if you want more.
Lastly, about the sold out spots. These are limited mostly because the buildings are made to order, and I don't want to swamp GameCraft with an order for hundreds of buildings and cause a lot of delays. That said, I will be increasing the number of spaces available soon (after I hear back from them about turn around times, etc). I'll post a new update when I change them
I just added a new character card to go with the Gambler Gang Leader figure, Mickey Finn.
He's armed with a Cooper Navy Revolver, Derringer Pocket Revolver and 2 Knuckledusters. I added those extra weapons even though you don't see them on the model in the photo, because the Derringer and Knuckledusters are small enough to fit in a pocket
I have some very rough sketches to share for 2 of the figures for the Bandidos Mexicanos. They're not detailed, just really to show movement and the positions we're going for. I'll have prettied-up and finished drawings to share really soon, but I just wanted to show these off since I know a bunch of folks were waiting
yeah I'm pretty anxious to see the final pics .. he got the girl pretty much perfect, just the look i wanted I'm hoping to go for a lot more "action" poses going forward.. might mean the figs need to have separate arms and stuff here and there, but I really wanna go for dynamic looking figures. There's already 500 other "cowboy standing there with a gun" minis out there
hit 400% today Here's hoping I can make it to 500 before the end?
Necros, I honestly didn't even know about this project untill I saw your forum support for the Dark Potential game they starting at Miniwargaming, but I'm in! Signed up to get all four starter sets, can't wait!
at only a $866 difference, you can rest assured the counter will hit $15.000. there's always a last-minute surge on kickstarter, often accounting for as much as 10% of total profit
That's what I'm hoping. Also if I can get the final artwork done in time I'll send that to all the news sites and that always brings in new blood. Also on friday I'm going to open up a bunch of new slots that include the building kits.. lots of folks have been asking for it so I expect a bunch will be increasing their pledges too
Schweet. That's awesome.
Now, I just need to decide which 3 gangs I'm going to pick up. If the rest of the Bandidos are as dynamic as the 2 you've already got sketched out, I'll probably be holding out for them.
The jury's still out on the Native Americans, though. I want to see more. : )
Is it safe to presume that those of us who are getting "freebies" (models, dice, etc) and and/or models that aren't produced yet will be waiting until we can receive everything at once?
I'm okay with that... just looking for clarification.
Thanks.
Eric
Automatically Appended Next Post: I almost forgot - I know there's little time left, but I'm wondering if you're going to put out another stretch goal, since so many projects often see a huge surge in the last days as people jump on the band wagon.
Also... Am I seeing this right?
As of right now, everyone pledging >$30 Us gets the following for free:
Both (Bounty Hunter & Gambler) Gang Leader Models (or equal credit)
The Norwegian
10 custom d6
Hell, that's well over $30 value RIGHT THERE. People should be jumping on this like nobody's business!
Yeah, it'll just be easier to send it all at once. But people who want the Clancy Gang can get that first since it will be available sooner, if they pay extra shipping.. then I can ship what bonus stuff I have with them too. The Norwegian figure probably won't be ready until the rest of the Vigilance Committee figures are done. Also not sure how long it will take to get the dice done, they said 6 weeks for 500 of them, I'll be ordering more like 2000 .. as of right now I need 1670 And I won't be able to pay for the dice till the beginning of May when I get the Kickstarter funds.
hmm.. 2000... suddenly just realized that's a heluva lotta dice....
Damn I'm getting more tempted by this. Oddly the mexican lass is selling it for me atm.
Going to have to test Aura on how much of a fan of the wild west era she is. She has noted it as a favoured style in the past, although I have a feeling thats slightly more weird west.
Eitherway, big grats on this Necros, seems Kickstarter is really paying off.
MagickalMemories wrote:@Necros
Will we have the option to just wait and receive it all at once, if we're happy to do so?
I second this question.
The wife and I both donated, and will be getting different gangs. Since it will all be going to the same address it would be better for us if we can wait and get it all at once in the same package, probably easier on the shippers end too.
Yes, you can wait.. in fact I'm hoping most people will want to wait since it will be easier for me that way
And yes you can group up your shipments too if you did 2 separate pledges. When I email everyone at the end I'm going to mention that .. and then for extra shipping charges you can either add it in to your pledge now or just wait till before it ships and we can do it with paypal, or through my online store or whatever works best for you.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just got a new pic today.. Cabo Mendoza .. he's a retired/washed out Mexican soldier with a machete, pistol and rolling block rifle
I wish I could get Amazon to use straight Paypal.. I really want to support this, and other than paying you directly thru my paypal account, I don't know how..
Which stinks, cause who doesn't like freebies? Crud.
I might be able to get to 500% .. we'll see I'm going to do 1 last news posting around the interweb on friday to advertise my last minute blowout extravaganza .. where I just free up some of the sold out spaces with the building kits. It's gone so well I'm just out of ideas for stretch goals now and with just a few days left I don't really have the time to prepare anything new anyway.. so I'm just gonna let it ride and see how we do in the end
porkuslime wrote:I wish I could get Amazon to use straight Paypal.. I really want to support this, and other than paying you directly thru my paypal account, I don't know how..

Same here!
I hate the fact that Kickstarter is tied to the whole odd Amazon Payments thing...
If you really don't want to use Kickstarter but want to still back the project, just PM me and we can arrange it and just use paypal or a discount code on my online store or whatever. As long as your PM is sent before 10 PM EST on Sunday April 15th you'll still be eligible for the Kickstarter freebies
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Necros -
I just added $60 onto my pledge and chose the $60 backing level to go with it (now, I've got a $90 and a $60). I did the $60 for Porkuslime, though, since he doesn't have Amazon Payments set up.
Will there be a problem having that $60 level sent to him directly and getting his name in the book?
Just got some pics of the Bounty Hunter Gang Leader, pro painted by Golem Painting Studio. I think their paint job shows off the fig a whole heck of a lot better than my old one did…
And yeah I'm excited about the dice too But then at the same time ... At this rate, now i'm gonna need even more than 2000 dice .. where am I gonna put them all? I'm also kind of wondering if they need to be tested, I can roll them all at once and see how many 1's I get. I usually roll lots of 1's...
here's the last 2 mexicans
Also I just added a lot of extra spaces to the sold out spots with the building kits. And if you want extra dice you can add a little extra to your pledge .. $3 for 4 more dice
Amazed that it's over $20,000 now ... and even a little bummed in a way, since Amazon and Kickstarter are gonna take $2000 of it :( hehe
So 13 dice each now .. at 21k it'll be 14 So, that'll be 3000+ now.
When I asked about 2000 they said it would take 8 weeks to make em.. it was 6 weeks for 1000 .. so I'm guessing around 10 weeks for 3000 .. and I can't order them till May when I get the Kickstarter funds. So the folks that want to just get the Clancy gang may have to wait until the beginning of July
9 hours to go! Would be cool if it gets another ~$475, just so people don't get an unlucky number of 13 dice
This is really exciting, and amazingly successful! I think this is going to give you the funds to really get the model range to support your clean, concise ruleset with. I'm happy to have tried it out and gotten the rulebook from you . Doing it before it was cool, I guess
I bet filbert's pretty excited about this, he seemed to really like your game setting, and it'll be really fleshed out after this.
Also... mexicans are tempting... my funds just got drained to Brushfire and Dreamforge, though, so hopefully some people around here will get into it and then I can tag along when the box sets are released
Actually, I'm going to go forward the link to the local gamers... they love infinity, so I think your ruleset will be right up their alley! And I personally like your setting better than infinity, and found it easier to play, so that'd be great if I could hook them on it.
Yeah I'm really excited next one the list I'll be getting the figs done for the guys that wanted to make their own gangs and characters, and those will come out after the 4 sets.
Had a chat with the folks from Game Salute the other day, and if all goes well they'll be helping out getting the figs out to distributors all over the world And helping with demos at cons I can't make it to. Gonna be working out the details over the next couple of weeks.
Then it's time to start putting together the big rulebook
@RiTides - Speak for yourself. thirteen's my LUCKY number. LOL
@Necros - if you roll all the dice, do it in one shot... and post a picture! LOL Then, give us a run down of how many 1's, 2's, 3's, etc. there were. We've gotta make sure we're getting quality dice, after all. ; )
Also, I bumped my $90 to $150 by adding a $60 pledge on for Porkuslime. Will I be able to have his set mailed to him instead of me?
You can add the postage to your pledge if you want, but it might be easier to do it when it's ready to ship via paypal or my online store. It'll help me that way a little too since i can use a Paypal shipping label and all that stuff too. I'll be emailing everyone shortly once the whole thing ends in 6 minutes
I'm going to be emailing them soon to go over their gangs and characters.. so I'll post all that as soon as I get it.. I'm going to be getting the figs for the 3 other starters done now, and then get sculpts done for those newer figs probably late may or early june.
If we want, can we hold out and see what gangs the High Dollar backers created, and choose theirs, or are we limited to the ones you've got set now?
Just wondering.
Sure, you can wait for the other gangs if you like .. could be a long wait though, I'd say probably October or so.
Didn't see that before, but yes, I can ship them separately. I have to set up some kind of survey thing through Kickstarter to get everyone's info, so when you get the email from that you can just mention it there.. I'll probably send that out tomorrow or tuesday.
I'm happy to wait till both start gangs are ready, and get the lot sent together. I risk the wrath of the taxman that way, but I might get lucky and that plane cargo might not get checked for tax charges.
Probably still cheaper than multiple US to UK shipping packages though.
As to gangs, I'll be just getting the two originally offered, if I like this game as much as I think I will. I'll be getting the Mexicans and Native Americans anyways, as they where a selling point in my decision.
Wish you all the best in this venture Necros, nice to see a Dakkanaut going places with their wargaming dreams.
I'm going to be emailing everyone tonight and I'm going to recommend that they wait until everything they want is available and do 1 shipment, but the impatient folks can get the Clancy Gang sooner if they want to pay extra for the shipping
Got my final quote for the dice, 3500 dice (!) .. gonna take 8-10 weeks to make them though.
Gonna be talking to the Game Salute folks later today about the fulfillment stuff .. guessing they'll be the ones actually sending out the rewards, which will be a lot easier for me. that means I'd just have all the boxes and figs and dice shipped directly to them (to save on shipping) so I'll never get to see them all those dice in person. But if that's the case I'll demand photos
You might want to wait to be sure about those dice.
Remember, there are folks like me out there, who are actually representing 2 people. Presumably, those people are getting multiple sets of dice and minis?
I know that there are people out there who won't be happy if they don't get the free stuff they were expecting, simply because they don't have Amazon payments.
yeah, when I email everyone I'm going to ask them to write back and clarify and list everything they wanted, just to be sure.
3472 dice would be if everyone got them, but there's 10 backers who were under $30, so they don't get any dice .. but I'm also thinking I'll order like 100 more than I need just to keep them on hand to use for demos at cons and stuff like that.
Got some new news to share .. just signed a manufacturing & fulfillment deal with GameSalute.com .. they'll be handling worldwide (!) distribution of Blackwater Gulch miniatures and more. We have lots of cool stuff planned
Game Salute is excited to welcome Gangfight Game Studio to our family of design studios! Blackwater Gulch - Gangfights in the Old West recently wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign, proving that there’s much love for the wild, wild west.
From the project’s Kickstarter page:
Blackwater Gulch is a table top hobby game where you and your friends collect small gangs of finely detailed, 30mm miniature men who will fight each other in the fierce and wild west. You will create a gang or posse based on different professions and equipment, breathing life into your men through the skirmishes they win or lose in the town streets and outskirts.
The game is named after the fictional town of Blackwater Gulch, located “somewhere out west”. It’s around 1890 and a gold rush has brought fortune-seekers to town after a local discovery made nationwide news. This also brought a population boom and the town has become overcrowded with unsavory sorts, and not enough lawmen to go around.
Your gang is living in these troubling times. They can be lawmen or outlaws, vigilantes or freedom fighters. You decide who they are, what they can do and why they do it. Adventure awaits in Blackwater Gulch! Keep your six-guns by your side, and an eye on your back. You’ll never know who’s coming down the road…
Check back regularly for production updates, including the official release date.
Welcome to the family, Gangfight Game Studio!
In other news, sculpting is about to get under way for the figures in the next 3 starter sets. I'll have previews to show off as soon as the sculptors send em
I think the only downside is my 3500 dice will have to be shipped directly to their warehouse. I won't get the chance to roll em all at once and dump the whole box on my kitchen floor :(
Just got a WIP pic of the Bloodwolf Tribe figures. Here they are so far!
It’s a lower quality pic and some of the details are over emphasized or washed out. Once I have them in hand I’ll take nicer high res pics of each figure. But this should be a good preview for now.
Also, the guy in the middle bottom is one of the deputies for the Vigilance Committee, in case you were wondering

I'll post other new greens as I get them!
Those are looking great, Tim! *adds Bloodwolf to the ever expanding to-buy list*
thanks Forgot to post it here.. but I asked the sculptor to send me nicer pics of the models.. I think he just scanned them all at once before, couldn't really see the details too much.
I'm also going to ask him to tweak the leader a bit, not a big fan of his tomahawk in the air. And it might have been tough to tell before but in this pic you can see the deputy has a bowie knife in his right hand
I've got a love/hate thing going on here.
Hate:
I hate the girth of the tomohawk handle and the pose he's holding it in.
I hate the legs on the gut with the top hat. They're HUGELY disproportionate. The hat doesn't seem to be sitting "right" on his head, either.
The face on the spear holder looks very "1980's Julie Guthrie/Grenadier" The standing guy with the rifle and the deputy may have similar issues.
Love:
Love the pose & the mohawk on the kneeling guy.
Love the hunched "knife fight" pose on the deputy.
Love the pose on the standing rifle-toting Native. It's very defiant.
My honest opinions overall -
Although there are things I really like about this band, I doubt I'll be getting it - and it was one of the ones I was holding out to see before choosing my 3 kickstarter armies. Is this a sculptor who's done any of the other models? None of these seem to be at the sme level as the others. Even the kneeling native, which I think is the best by far, has some issues that keep it below the level of most (all?) of your other sculpts.
No disrespect intended (towards you or the sculptor), but I really hope he's not doing the Bandidos warband.
I hear ya .. and I agree for the most part. Not quite what I was hoping for which is why I wanted the clearer pics that still aren't great. Thing is a lot of times what looks bad in a pic ends up look great in person. These were done by Bob Naismith. He did the clancy figure that's kneeling with the sawed off shotgun. He is going to be reworking the chief a bit, I also didn't like the tomahawk so that will be changing.
Brother Vinni will be doing all 5 of the bandidos, plus a sheriff Then for the Vigilance Committee I have Pedro Ramos doing 2 more, and 1 to Ian Mountain.
Where's the kneeling Clancy model? I can't find him. I know Vinni & Ramos by name. I'm not much into the custom sculpted model market, so I don't know much about them. I believe I've seen Vinni's work in other places (non BWG:GItOW models), though, and it was damned good.
I don't know Ian, though.
Yeah I'm hoping he can have some of the Mexicans done in time for me to show off for Cinco de Mayo
in this pic, Bob did the 2nd guy in. Pedo did the 3rd guy, also the Norwegian and my Bounty Hunter gang leader. Vinni did the girl and the guy running with 2 pistols. Ian hasn't done any for me yet, so this will be his first, but he's a solid sculptor. I think he does more historical kinda stuff.
Those Bloodwolf figs are going back under the sculpting knife and will be updated a considerably, if not redone from scratch. They're good sculpts, but just not currently up to the standard that I want for the game. We want to raise the bar so to speak and not just make the same wild west figs that everyone else does already. So I'll have all new pics soon. I've been kind of lacking in the art direction department and didn't really convey to the sculptor what I was really looking for, so I'm hopeful the new sculpts will be much better.
Also, hopefully I'll have at least a few of the Mexicans done and ready to show off around the end of the week

Please tell me the last one (done by Vinni) is part of the Clancy gang...even better if him and the girl were part of it...
Never ever been to a big con before, so I don't quite know what I'm in for... but I'll be hanging with the Game Salute fellas and doing demos and showing off the models and all that fun stuff.
I might also see if it would be possible to have backers pick up their Kickstarter orders there if we have everything ready in time.
I went and looked at the kickstarter page and saw '$21,354 pledged of $3,500 goal '. That's awesome. Congratulations on the success of the kickstarter. Looks like you're making good use of it with these sculpts.
When my FLGS eventually gets it in (they have a good Wild West portion of gamers, so this will fit right in) I'll be sure to give the game a look.
So, I'm beginning to suspect that two of my gangs are going to be Clancy and Bandidos. I had high hopes for the Natives... but we'll see how that goes when the pics of the updates come in.
What I'd REALLY like to see is a traveling circus gang. LOL Strong man
Dwarf/midget clown
Bearded Lady
Fire Eater
Sword Swallower
Trick Shooter
ha .. actually I'm planning a traveling circus gang, someday Kind of based on some of the characters in the HBO show Carnivale. Was thinking the leader would be a "little person", but with a big shotgun and he gets knocked back D3 inches every time he shoots
Necros wrote:ha .. actually I'm planning a traveling circus gang, someday Kind of based on some of the characters in the HBO show Carnivale. Was thinking the leader would be a "little person", but with a big shotgun and he gets knocked back D3 inches every time he shoots
If it's got a bearded lady and a trick shooter (maybe an optional mounted trick shooter, available separately?), I'm in if I've got a group of people who play.
Add in a clown, and I'm an almost guaranteed sale, regardless. LOL
Really big pic, but here's a big collage of the updated Bloodwolf + 1 lawman sculpt from Bob Naismith. Photo quality isn't the best but you can get a better idea of how they look now. Once I have the greens in hand I'll take some nice pics
I just wanted to share some new concept sketches for the Vigilance Committee. A doctor and one of the town deputies. These were done by Don Ellis Aguillo and will be sculpted by Brother Vinni.
In other news, I have the sculpts for the Bloodwolves on the way to me now and I'll post updated pics of the greens as soon as I get them In the meantime, we're getting the printed mini rulebook proofread now and once I start getting some pro painted minis done for the gangs I'll be able to update the photos for the book and then we'll be pretty much done.
Also, if anyone is going to be at Origins, the fellas at Game Salute will be showing off some of the figures for the Clancy Gang, so stop by and check em out I won't be able to make it, but I'll be at GenCon running demos

Heck I would consider paying for the sculpts
Me too! To be completely honest, that book series was the major reason I got in on this kickstarter. Though I dont recall kickstartery minis specifically being Rolands last ka-tet. I'm sure the younger Roland, Cuthbert, and Alain could easily be one of the gangs, though.
hmm .. well, I read the first couple of books years ago, like when they first came out. I just don't have the time to read big books these days, and audio books put me to sleep. But I think something like that could be arranged some day I would need someone else that knows the series to help me out with character descriptions and names that are similar but different
I dunno if we can give him a pipe.. that was in the original drawing but I assumed he left it out because it wouldn't come out right in the molds and stuff. The figure will be face down in the mold, so you won't be able to get a rounded pipe in there, it would probably get smushed into the face like he's got a giant mole.

Here’s the pics for the last 2 of the Bandidos Mexicanos that will go in the gang starter set.. Esteban “El Cutador” Cruz and Susana la Loba!
Next, Brother Vinni will be sculpting 3 of the Vigilance Committee figures and I’ll show those off as soon as I get them. In the next day or so I will also have the greens for all 5 of the Bloodwolf Tribe and 1 Vigilance Committee deputy from Bob Naismith, and I’ll post up pics as soon as I can
Yep, soon as I get them painted up I'll get take some group shots I don't actually have the figures in hand, we got the masters but they were sent to Game Salute, who just left for Origins and missed the delivery since FedEx is slow :( But I'll take the pics as soon as I'm able
Hey folks.. just a quick note to say I'll have some close up and nicer shots of the Bloodwolf Tribe to show off later tonight. I got the figures and they look really great in person. Lots of fine detail that just wasn't there in the photos from the sculptor.
And another thing I wanted to throw out there... With the game being so new and "barely released" right now, I've been wondering if it would be wise to change gears a little bit and convert the game world over to a "Fantasy Western" setting. Same idea as it is now, outlaws vs lawmen in the wild west. Only, the world is also inhabited by fantasy races like halfling gunslingers hanging out in the saloons, elven drifter bounty hunters, dwarven hillbilly mountain men, that sort of thing. It would be a world dominated by humans, so the gangs currently in production are still the "big 4" factions for the game. Future releases would mix these other races into the current gangs, add in new gangs and hired guns.
There wouldn't be any wizards or overly supernatural things. In this world, magic faded out and gave way to industry and technology and it's pretty much gone from the world now. These fantasy races are just mixed in with normal humans and regular citizens. There will still be Colt 45's and Winchesters, it'll still be in the USA, just an alternate world kind of thing.
It's a game world I'd love to develop and it's been in my head for a long time now. I guess right now I'm wondering if it's a good idea to convert & expand upon the current game, or put together an all new and separate game, more like "Blackwater Gulch: Fantasy in the Old West" ? Guess I'm just trying to think of the best way to approach it. I don't want to tick off the people who are into the game currently as a historical game, but at the same time I want to expand the game into a cool & original product line.
Well I think having a Fantasy side expansion later on would be pretty neat after the base game establishes itself. Especially if you're a fan of Deadlands or something
Blackwater Gulch: Fantasy in the Old West sounds like a great idea. But I would keep it to an expansion to see how well it does before you go down the path.
Personally the realistic aspect of the game is what lead me to kickstart it.
Just as an aside, are there any plans to make the remainder of the Clancy gang available separately? I bought both the Bounty Hunter and Gambler models when they were sold separately but I gather you are no longer going to have the single blisters available? I want to get the Clancy Gang but already have two of them!
No, you don't have any Clancy figures, you have 2 Hired Guns now Hired guns are meant to be characters that can fit into any gang, you can hire 1 for every 5 models in your gang. Or, you can just use the figures as your own members if you want to design your own gang. I'll have a rules update explaining all of that stuff shortly. So, the Clancy's are all different. They were in the pics on the Kickstarter page. It's the guy running with 2 pistols, girl bandit, wrassler with sledge hammer, kneeling bandit, and the left handed bandit guy. We just got the master sculpts and will be sending them out for paint shortly Also, after the initial release we'll be doing 3-man add-on sets for each gang with all new figures too.
An expansion would probably be a better idea. I've also been planning a Space Hulk-ish board game. Most mechanics would be similar to the skirmish game, and characters would have the same kinds of stats and skills, the character cards would look similar too. Then if players wanted to they could use the board game heroes in their skirmish gangs, or add skirmish gang characters to the board game. But, it would be 2 separate products. So, that could work as the fantasy game since it will be like a whole separate product and audience, being a board game and all.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and I also have a writer on board, Jonathan Peace, who will be helping out with fluff and fleshing out the game world.. since my writing style is pretty much all textbooky. He wrote some fluff for the game already, the short story in the rulebook

I would be against the idea of making it a fantasy western unless it was a completely different expansion set that was not forced into the main game. I enjoyed the idea of a historical western setting.
Maybe an alternate reality like "blackwater nightmares" as an expansion would allow you to expand the models and the game rather than altering what you started with.

Ill agree completely. Keep the base game as the semi-historical theme...but definitely keep some funky side expansions in mind.
Agreed, Blackwater: Midnight Showdown [i]would be amazing, but I think keeping it separate from the main game is a good idea, many will appreciate a purely historic setting.
Thanks folks, it's settled.. expansion it is but characters will be fully compatible with the 2 different settings for the folks that want to cross over, we'll do some optional rules to tie it together. The fantasy game will be more of a board based game with plasticy figs and tons of leaping vorpal jackalopes in the box.
Main game will still be the same skirmish historical with metal figs the old fashioned way
I want to stay away from horror themes though, and stick with traditional fantasy. Deadlands is already out there for horror fans and I don't want to step on their toes. And there's Malifaux too. I want to do something more original.
Lots of details to flesh out so this will take a while
Well what I meant was, it would be a board game, but the stats for the characters and core game mechanics will be the same as the skirmish game, you could easily play the fantasy characters with skirmish rules, and vise versa. Basically 2 different product lines, but both are compatible with each other. just a matter of moving 6 inches, instead of 6 squares. That sort of thing. I'm guessing we would also be offering the figures separately too, so if you didn't want to buy the board game you could just buy the models separately.
And finally heres some new pics of the Bloodwolf Tribe greens. First, here’s the whole gang all together..
Next, here’s the description of the gang that will be in the rulebook:
The Saltpan Plains beyond the town’s boundaries are a dangerous place filled with many hazards. The terrain is harsh and tough as are those that choose to live upon its dusty back. Hidden amongst the boulders, outcrops and scrub are many tribes of Indians, most famous being The Bloodwolf Tribe. Hardened against the elements and fiercly loyal, the Bloodwolf have their own reasons for coming into the town of Blackwater Gulch.
Their true names are a secret only those within the Tribe will ever know, so when they came raiding into town, or were seen from a distance, the people of Blackwater Gulch gave them their own nicknames. Their Chief is “The Hawk”, his tomahawk a deadly mix of weapon and totem. “Boneshirt” scouts for the Tribe, his longrifle keen to pick out distant targets while “Top Hat” is keen to stand and fight, gunslinger style. “Mohawk” and “Spearman” are ferocious, deadly warriors, comfortable in any terrain as they are in the streets of Blackwater Gulch.
And last but not least, here’s a few closeup shots. I’ll have more to share in the next couple of days
I'll echo everyone's vote for seperate expansion. I think a lot of the positive energy the game has had so far is due to the game's straightforward historical-esque setting. I'd love to see it expanded into a broader "Weird West" setting at some point as long as it doesn't replace the initial setting.
Also, since you know there's a demand for Blackwater Gulch as it is now, you risk shooting yourself in the foot with a genre change.
I know the idea behind Gangfight Games is to eventually release a number of skirmish settings around the core rules, so your second setting being based on a fantasy Wild West world would be an easy way to expand your offerings without having to come up with a completely new range of models from scratch.
I'd say work with your writer to fully develop the fantasy setting prior to releasing anything. You have history on your side with Blackwater Gulch, but for the fantasy setting you have nothing backing you up, so the more fleshed out it is the better it might be received. I think since you want to go for a more fantasy setting than horror, you're going to be working against a lot of expectations with games like Malifaux and Deadlands putting the idea of horror + wild west in everyone's minds.
Also, I'll add these ideas: Chinese goblins, robot cowboys, elf aristocrats, Chtulu-esque cultists, a mouse bandito character who is very fast..., crocodile indians, dwarf prospectors (of course...)
with regards to the robot cowboys, check out a graphic novel called Iron West by Doug TenNapel.
I'm still mad I missed the Kickstarter, and am stoked on the direction so far.
As to the expansion- An example for you would be as with Red Dead Redemption. A sam peckenpah game, and then the expansion, with the zombies.
Your sub expansions cou8ld be tailored to fit different aspects of "Fantasy" Old West.
Steampunk, or that Wild Wild West "Inventor/ Federal agent Vs. the Mad Inventor
A Skinwalker/ Wendago hunt
A renegade gang of either possessed, or mutated indians
An undead, or possessed lone covered wagon medicine show- Whos Elixers, and potions spread ill fated curses, horrors, and things that go bump in the night.
Zombie civil war regiment, as in that one movie where they started rising off of battlefields, and ending up attacking the living.
"Into the Badlands." Bruce Dern plays a hunted Bounty Hunter- Who can come back from the grave.
Day of the dead, where in the old west, the horrors come out on every once inawhile. Then your not bringing old Zeke a horror every other gang fight, and they pop out in a random chance encounter.
The Skunk Ape/ Bigfoot/ Yeti
Chucicabre
Miner forty niner- Undead/ demon miner who fights for some random territory/ claim.
EVERYONES FAVORITE- Tremmors The scurge of the graboids.
Undead Siant of Killers.
Ghost riders in the sky........
The Man In Black.
Have the book/ suppliments as different aspects of the game, with different enemies antagonists to compliment the emerging factions/ gangs.
I can assure you that there are tons of horror cowboy movies for your "Research".
As to the fantasy aspect- Why not? Give them thier own suppliment.
I love your game, and the stuff your coming up with is efficient and fresh! As usual, Thanks for the hard work in there.
(I'm still interested in the tombstone guys, but am away as of yet, so keep them for me. I'll be in touch for them at a later date.)
No matter how many expansions you dream up, just make sure they are all cross compatable Necros, like the majority of Heroclix.
That way I can take Weird West Elves up against the BloodWolf Tribe without any hassles.
For the bloodwolves, no girls in the starter set but there will be some in the add on packs Just neglected to include them with the concept art I had done before, but they'll be there along soon. They're home right now, preparing the victory feast of buffalo and corn.
Had a long brain storming session last night, the fantasy stuff will be a separate game. But, the same basic rules so if players want to play fantasy characters with skirmish rules they can, and vise versa. So we'll have "Blackwater Gulch: Gangfights in the Old West" as one product line and then "Blackwater Gulch: Sixguns & Sorcery" as a different-but-similar product line. .. Sixguns & Sorcery is a working title..
Still a really long way to go yet. The main focus right now is the skirmish game, getting the Kickstarter gangs done and sent to the backers, and then the retail release and getting new figures done to keep expanding the line. The fantasy game will be a whole other product line developed separately. Lots of ideas flowing so we gotta grab the good ones and put it all together. The Game Salute folks want to see "A big, mean, evil sorcerer-gunslinger riding a dragon"
And yeah I'd love to do other genres too, sci fi would be great .. Could do horror but I really don't want to tread on the Deadlands and Malifaux toes so I'd have to come up with something more unique to my setting.
Could also expand the fantasy world too... al capone could be an orc
I'd like to see a giant lizard mount a la Dark Elf cold ones. That would be pretty awesome...or...how about just bring in some dinasaurs. Raptors & Rifles, Lizards & Lawmen
Happy to hear there's lots of ideas floating around for the future of the game.
Blackwater Gulch: Into the Black could be a good name for a Firefly/sci-fi old west expansion.
Yeah we can do all that kind of stuff. A lizardman hero named Sleestax would be cool
There's going to have to be a lot of cannon fodder minis that would probably be like 5 copies of the same 2 sculps for the little things, but I also home to have some really cool large monsters in there for the wow factor.
Still lots of ideas flowing so we'll iron out all the details soon. We may even drop the Blackwater Gulch tag from the name and just have it be it's own game that's "from the makers of Blackwater Gulch" .. and of course still have the same crossover rules and stuff for the players that want that sort of thing. So we'll have the "Historical Western Skirmish Game" and "Fantasy Western Survival Boardgame"
Yes! Marshall Willinholly is a Federal Wildlife Marshall, out to capture the dirty ape Susanna, the orangutan. Susanna has fallen in with a couple of drifters, Jay and Bob the Silent.... Who are on a quest to clear their name in California.
Edit- yes, I know this is not land of the lost, but the name of the Marshall was inspired by the show. The tale above is from a completely different movie.
As for Sleestak, I'm onboard 100%, but he has to have a buddy, Enok, who wears a tunic.
Here’s 3 more greens, for the last 2 Bloodwolf figures, plus another one of the Vigilance Committee, Sam Winston.
I’m hoping to have pics of the last 3 Vigilance Committee figures from Brother Vinni later this week, and then that will be it for the 4 main starter sets. After that, we’ll start working on our next wave of figures which will be a 5th starter for a gang of drifters and 3 more Hired Guns. I'll have concepts for them to show off soon
We're getting there. We'll be getting the Clancy gang figs all painted up soon for the box art, then it's just a matter of getting them made so they should be ready to go by the end of the month as planned. We'll send those to the Kickstarters that wanted just that gang first, but we won't have everything ready for retail until probably the end of the summer and we'll do a launch for all 4 sets, also a printed rulebook too Planning to unveil it all at once at GenCon
I wouldn't worry about stepping on toes, re: Horror West. Malifaux doesn't really count, IMO, as they cross a few genres, themselves. I've got no experience with Deadlands.
Here's the thing, though... You've got people playing YOUR game... Why send them somewhere else, if you're putting out expansions and they're asking for horror? If you want to create a horror expansion, then do it. It won't be Deadlands, it'll be Blackwater Gulch Horror.
I'd like to see a generic "Weird West" label to go along with BWG. Any non-traditional Western expansion would go under that heading and would be 100% optional, even amongst each other. If you want dwarves and elves, fine. If you want aliens and robots, fine. If you want horror, fine. Want to mix 2 of them, but not all? No problem.
Good points.. I guess I just wanted to avoid the interweb trolling .. "blah blah they copied off so and so"
Anyway, for the new games, I'm thinking now we will probably do them as optional expansions, but still treated like a whole separate world, just all under BWG as the brand name so to speak. So "Gangfights in the Old West" is the core game.
Then "Sixguns & Sorcery" or whatever we call it will be the fantasy alt universe, humans in that game will be the same figures as the core game, new figures will be for other races and monsters in an adventure board game format. And then that will also add races, magic and monsters to the core skirmish rules. That will probably just be 1-2 page PDF add on.
Either way though I'd like to keep that as more fantasy than horror.. We could do a 3rd horror game.. vamps, werestuff, ghosts & zombies. Like a whole separate 3rd universe.. or build off the fantasy one? So many old ghost stories, hard to ignore em
I'd love to do a sci fi western too.. but that would probably have to be an all new game. Maybe like firefly, with aliens.

I like that a idea a lot. Also helps for introducing people to games. Many people take to a board game better than a regular miniatures game. This would allow you to start with one and move on to the other.
On a seperate note...how close are we getting to the kickstarter stuff shipping out? Well the Bandidos & Clancys in specific...
Clancy's should be done soon.. just got the masters so now it's a matter of getting production molds done and getting the figs. Hoping by the end of the month, or early July. But, that will just be for the Kickstarters. We're going to do a big retail release for all 4 gangs later when they're all ready. Will take a while to package everything anyway.
So the folks that just ordered the clancy gang can get those soon, but if you ordered more gangs you can get the clancys and pay extra shipping for the others, or just wait and get it all at once to save.
What we're going to do is issue every backer an individual virtual gift certificate for the Game Salute online store for the amount you pledged. Then we'll have a special order page for the KS pledge levels, so you will just go there and order what you wanted. Figured this was the best way to go since some people paid for shipping and some didn't. And there were also people that combined orders with other pledgers, so you could both use your gift certificate codes together in one big order if it's shipping to the same place.
Just wanted to share some new concept art. These are for characters that were created by high level Kickstarter backers and will be released after the first 4 starter sets (haven’t started sculpting these guys yet).
Speaking of sculpting, we’re still waiting on the final 3 sculpts for the Vigilance Committee and then the first 4 starter sets will be done. We’re working out packaging and all that stuff right now, so I’ll have more details soon. I had hoped to have the first starter set for the Clancy Gang done this month, but there were a lot of delays. Plus, the custom dice and building kits for the Kickstarter backers haven’t arrived yet anyway. but we'll try and get the first starter done asap so the backers that only ordered the Clancy gang can get them first
So, here’s the first 4 new characters. I’ll show off the next 4 in a couple of days
Here’s a sample of the Clancy Gang starter set cover art. Might do some tweaks here and there, but this is pretty much how all of the boxes will look
In other news, just got pics of the Vigilance Committee sheriff, 2 more figs left and they should be done around the end of the week so I'll show off all 3 when I get the pics
I should have the master copies of the Bloodwolf tribe today or tomorrow so I'll be getting those painted next. Looks like Clancy's and Bloodwolfs will be done first. The bandidos and Vigilance Committee are still mostly in the hands of Brother Vinni. He'll be sending everything as soon as he finishes the last 2 sculpts. Getting excited now
Also been working on the fantasy game a lot in the background... going to be changing that up quite a bit, no more "tolkein wild west".. gonna be sticking mostly to US/Native American folklore things, and the first game will be all about skinwalkers and wendigos (werewolves and other were-things).
I like it overall, but the figures seem pretty small compaired to the package. Also, I don't feel like the minis 'pop' enough in that picture. Maybe there's too much going on visually in the background with the different colors of the buildings. Also, I don't like the way the guy on the portch has it's base sticking out over the edge. I'd like to see them outside a bank or saloon, as if they just robbed it.
Maybe at some point you could make a blister of objectives, like sacks of money, some TNT, small crates, etc.
Yeah that was just a sample pic. I'm setting up a more dedicated photo area now that will have good lighting, etc. Also have to finish painting my zuzzy matt But, I wanted to put the guy on the porch, since he's so short
Not sure what to do for the Bloodwolf photo though, don't really have any models of teepees or anything. Guess they'll just be out in the woods.
I was thinking about doing a few different sets obstacles and objectives so I'm sure that will happen soon.
Necros wrote:Also been working on the fantasy game a lot in the background... going to be changing that up quite a bit, no more "tolkein wild west".. gonna be sticking mostly to US/Native American folklore things, and the first game will be all about skinwalkers and wendigos (werewolves and other were-things).
Aw. This makes me a little sad.
I was actually looking forward to seeing what you might do with Halfling Gamblers, Dwarven Wrasslers & Elven Sharpshooters (etc.).
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the folklore stuff, though.
Well the halfling gunslingers aren't dead and gone.. just changing the theme a bit for the next game.. and the other more fantasy stuff could come later, or get it's own whole new world.
Will be keeping goblins though, but they'll be tommyknockers They'll be the henchmen, some melee and some shooty.
There will be a few different levels for the monsters. Critters have 1's for all attributes, but they attack in groups and so 3 of them attacking you would be like 1 attack at Str 3. Then there's beasts, wolf-sized things with stats that equal 25 xp.
Then the goblins as henchmen, and the evil wendigo bosses would be the professional level guys, with the final boss being the same kind of stats as a gang leader, and he'll have a raptory dragony thing for a mount
All of the heroes in the game will have gang leader stats too, so it's not like a skirmish gang where you have to have a bunch of henchmen.
Here are some preview pics for the leader of the Vigilance Committee, infamous bounty hunter, Rick Dawson.
I’m still waiting on the sculpts for the last 2 VC models, then we’ll finally be done with the sculpts from the Kickstarter
We’re hard at work getting the packaging and other goodies taken care of. Lots of non-glamorous stuff going on behind the scenes. For now, here’s a preview of the Character Card for Wilt Jackson of the Clancy Gang
