For retail, I was hoping for August, but now it's looking like it will be September. Ran into a lot of delays with sculpting. We just have those 2 more figures for Brother Vinni to finish then we'll be all set. After I get those greens, it'll be a month or so to finally get them cast and get a set painted for box photos. We wanted to release all 4 starter sets and the printed rulebook all at once. But in the meantime we'll be getting the first 2 (Clancys and Bloodwolves) done and packaged and out of the way, so Kickstarters can get them sooner. But we don't have packaging finalized yet.. everything takes so long :/
But anyway, we'll be selling everything on shop.gamesalute.com (I canceled my own online store, no need for it now) ... and it will also be available in game shops everywhere. The shops that get signed on to deal directly with Game Salute will be able to get stuff earlier too I think
For the second one, it'd be cool if it came with a few hand options, in case you wanted something a little different... I like the sculpt of the body but the hands/guns seem a little awkward.
Supposed to be like a standoff, he's aiming at 2 guys at once, daring em to shoot first
But, with the arms outstretched like that, they'll be pretty easy to convert if you want to. You can snip off a gun hand and swap it with another weapon, or even swap a whole arm out
And here's something else .. Battle Flag (wargame-buildings.com) has a series of wild west buildings. They're going to be customizing a lot of them with new decals and signs for Blackwater Gulch. Should be available soon, but here's some previews
The Blackwater Palace hotel was customized based on their trinity palace.. they changed it to have a flat roof, for sharpshooters here's they'r flier...
And here's Dr. Trent Dougall's office and home (instead of the trinity undertaker).. and the local sheriff's office
I'll be showing them off along with GameCraft's buildings at GenCon
Yeah their buildings are really great. Get a few of them, add in a couple from GameCraft and Sarissa and you'll have a nice looking town. The hotel is kinda pricey, but it is really huge and has a removable 2nd floor and roof, and lots of fine details too. Makes a really nice centerpiece. The other battle flag buildings are all a lot cheaper.
You've got an awesome set of miniatures and terrain for your game - hopefully you end up doing really, really well because you've certainly put the effort into this, and the results show it!
Necros, what is the planned time table for everything being released? By the start of 2013 will Blackwater Gulch be a fully realized game with 4 starter gangs, extra models in blisters, and a full like of terrain?
What are the plans once everything is released? You will you have regular updates featuring battle reports or new scenerios or hobby articles?
Or will you take some time off and relax for a few months after all the crazyness of this year!
Just curious to see what the plan is since everything seems to be going smoothly so far.
Won't have any time to relax Lots of stuff planned
So we're going to start off with the 4 starter sets from the kickstarter plus a 3-man add-on box set of Hired Guns that will be the Norwegian plus bounty hunter and gambler figs I made originally, and we'll have a printed rulebook (plus a PDF). Planning for late summer/early fall retail release for all of that, and Kickstarters will get their orders earlier.
After that will be a 5th gang starter of yet to be named drifters, from the high level Kickstarter backer (they couldn't think of a good name for the gang) .. And then a 2nd set of 3 Hired Guns that will be from the $500 kickstarter backer's characters. No idea when those will be released, we didn't even start sculpting yet.
And then after that there will be a series of 3-man add on packs to expand each gang. These will come with 1 professional and 2 henchmen. We'll do 3 different add ons for each gang each with a pro that's not in the starter set, so in the end we'll have a full 14-man gang with all 6 professions represented. I'd like to also do a full gang box set maybe with a special 15th figure who could be an alternate gang leader as a bonus fig for the big box.
And then, there's cavalry models... I'd like to some day do mounted and unmounted versions of every figure, or at least the leaders and professionals. And if we do horses, we gotta do stage coaches too Need an excuse to mount an old fashioned gatling gun to something...
And then.. there's the whole fantasy/folklore boxed game thing that will be happening mixed in with all these other releases too.
So that's my overall plan for world domination. No idea when future things will be made and released at this point though, still too early Eventually I would like to get to the point where I could have a few new sets of figures coming out every month, for a few different games. I do plan to do lots of game aids and hobby guides and all that stuff too.
I'll be making that live soon, but I still have a lot to add to the game guide section. I'd like to be able to do some how to play videos, but I don't have a camera yet :/
Got my Blackwater Palace model today.. this thing is HUGE. I can see why it costs £100, lots of detail and it's really like a centerpiece model. Definitely worth it too, IMO.
Probably too big for my 2x2 demo boards, but I'll be using it for demos anyway Tried messing with the video setting on my digital camera.. nowhere near HD, but here's a quick video I shot so you can see all the angles and what's inside.
Cool stuff. I've got a smattering of Black Scorpion and Reaper wild west figures, but I really like the character of the masters you've posted, especially Brother Vinni's dynamic sculpts. I'm really looking forward to adding to my collection, the rules seem solid and this game could go over really well with my regular group.
Battle Flag just added a new building, La Maison Rouge, the old west bordello
Going to be giving one of these kits away free to a lucky Kickstarter backer, added the details for how to win on the Kickstarter page in a new update post
Got a preview of the cover art for the Bloodwolf Tribe Starter Box Set
Also, I know I posted this before, but here’s an updated pic of the Clancy Gang cover. Changed the photo a bit and did some tweaks to the overall template for the box design
Hoping to finally get the updated rulebook done around next week or so
Looking good! Can't wait to have the boxes on my shelf of other boxes of things to paint! (although these will probably get done quick, my girlfriend is really interested in playing)
Also can't wait to go through the new book when its done! Assuming its on PDF at least.
Thanks I may update the photos again still.. Maybe I can find some teepee models at Gencon for the Bloodwolves And I think I'm going to have the Clancys outside the sheriff's office, since I have some mini wanted posters on there. Might fit them better.
And yes the new rules will be a PDF. The new PDF will have less images to be easier on people's printers and make a smaller download. But I have to get the full printed book all finalized first, and then work backwards from there to cut it down for the PDF.
Had some new color artwork done colorized version of El Jefe's concept art plus a bloodwolf guy .. these guys are going to go on the backs of the boxes along with a description of the gang and what's inside and stuff like that
Posted this as a Kickstarter update but just in case you backed and didn't see it .. and you'll be at GenCon
Are you going to be at GenCon? If so, stop by the Game Salute booth and say hi! I'll be running demos on Friday and Saturday.
If you will be there, and you would like to pick up your pledge reward in person, that can be arranged. However, we will only have the figures for the Clancy Gang and Bloodwolf Tribe, plus the Hired Guns (the 3 free reward miniatures). I still have yet to receive the sculpts for the Bandidos Mexicanos and 3 of the Vigilance Committee. They should finally be arriving in the next few days, so I will have those sculpts on display.
So, if you ordered the Clancy Gang or Bloodwolf Tribe (or would like to switch and get them instead) and would like to pick them up at GenCon, please email me (or send me a message on Kickstarter if that's easier) .. and we'll make arrangements and have the miniatures waiting for you. The Character Cards will not be printed until later, so we will mail those to you as soon as they are ready. If you pick up your figures at GenCon, they will be unpackaged.. just the figures and bases. I'll actually be picking up our first big batch of figures there at the show on Friday, so your orders will be ready on Saturday.
Cool I don't think we'll be selling anything though, pretty much just demos and letting some folks pick up their orders ahead of time. Going to be picking up the shipment of figs from Iron Wind on Friday, then packing up whatever orders I have so folks can pick them up saturday
Necros wrote:Cool I don't think we'll be selling anything though, pretty much just demos and letting some folks pick up their orders ahead of time. Going to be picking up the shipment of figs from Iron Wind on Friday, then packing up whatever orders I have so folks can pick them up saturday
Ah, fair enough then.
We just finished packing/boxing minis last night (aside from our blisters which I'm doing later today). Fun filled tedious work with Penn & Teller on in the background.
I'll be there Friday and Saturday. I'll most likely be at the Game Salute Sneak Peeks booth #2035. They will also have a store going at booth #1033, so if you don't see me at the sneak peek booth, I may be at that one
Friday will be off an on demos, since I have a ginormous order of figures to pick up and some folks to meet with. But I hope to do demos till I drop on saturday
So if you're gonna be at GenCon, stop by and at least say hi I'll be the guy in the Blackwater Gulch t-shirt
Yeah, lulu was good for just starting out, but the books they make are too expensive IMO. So we're going to print up a whole bunch to go with the retail release. It's a smaller format book like the ones you get in the GW starter sets, so that's why the PDF is laid out like 2 page spreads.
No idea when we'll have the printed ones done, but will be soon. Big meeting planned for GenCon and we'll get everything finalized.
I also just this morning got the sculpts for the mexicans and the rest of the vigilance committee, so I'll have those to show off at GenCon
Back from GenCon. Had a great time, but it was really way more ginormous than I ever thought possible. Gave lots of demos and met lots of backers, was hella fun Gonna be saving up my pennies and hope to be able to afford a real booth in the dealer area next year, since I'll actually have stuff to sell by then
Anyway, I had a guy working on Army Builder files for the game and he just finished them today. Works really great, you can make your own custom gang members and click around to add their stats and weapons. Also have some of the pre-made characters in there that will come with the starter sets. He just finished the files, so you can go download em here:
Getting there. I wish it wasn't at a snail's pace though. I'm hoping once we get all the bugs worked out future releases will go much smoother. here's where we're at now...
As of right now we have all 3 hired guns (the free reward figs) and the dice in stock, plus all of the building kits people ordered. We also have all of the clancy gang figs and the bloodwolf tribe figs. We still need to place an order for the 10,000 or so bases we'll need.
While I was at GenCon I handed the final sculpts to the fellas at Iron Wind who will be making the master molds hopefully this week. So pretty soon we'll finally have all of the figures ready to go!
I also have all of the character cards and box art done for the clancy gang and bloodwolf tribe. Once I get master metal figures for the next 2 I'll paint them up for the cards and box photos and then we'll be all set.
We're still finalizing packaging, I have to go over all of the details with the Game Salute fellas when they get back and settled from GenCon later this week. What we're planning to do for the starter sets is have them come with a foam tray to hold the figs, so you can carry and store them safely after you paint em
Cool deal, just like to keep up. My wife and I are still looking forward to the game. She in for the Banditos and Clancy for me...we love the sculpts for both gangs and cant wait to get ahold of the minis.
We got an email about a new kickstarter for expanding the gangs, possibly starting in October. We would be in for it, but timing would be the important part, we are moving in September. A kickstarter in late Oct would be perfect, as we should be working by then,
Yep, we're planning it out right now. Will take a while and we do want to wait till the models from the first set are at least sent out to the previous backers. Planning 3 new 3-man add on packs for each existing gang, so that will be 12 packs total. Will probably do something like every $3000 earned will let us do a new pack, $36,000 to do all 12. If we can get past that we'll start doing new gangs and also start looking into cavalry models.
But, we have to get concept art done for some of new figures first, and possibly start sculpting the first couple of add on sets ahead of time. So yeah it will probably be around October some time
Mad4Minis wrote: We got an email about a new kickstarter for expanding the gangs, possibly starting in October. We would be in for it, but timing would be the important part, we are moving in September. A kickstarter in late Oct would be perfect, as we should be working by then,
Unless you're planning on pledging for 10K or something, I'm thinking planning/launching of this just might move ahead with or without you!
All kidding aside, I'm very interested in seeing what this one will include.
I missed out on the last one, but hopefully not this one!
Well there's 6 professions in the game, and the starters come with 3 of them. So, the boosters will include 1 of each other profession that a gang's starter is missing, plus 2 more henchmen that are kind of the same theme as the professional. Like the Clancy Gang prospector booster will have Uncle Zeke and his 2 henchmen will be miner looking guys. that sort of thing.
So to get 3 boosters for all 4 gangs, that's a total of 12 new sets, 36 new figures. I'm thinking we'll set the bar low, so if we need like $3000 to do a new booster, then we'll set the funding level at $3000 to fund the first one, then every $3000 we can generate we can add in a new one.
I'll do some custom dice again for rewards, thinking with a colt 45 icon this time. I also have the artwork ready to go for a whole new gang and 3 new hired guns, so I'm thinking I will have those figures set aside as reward figures. No idea what amounts they will become available yet, but who knows if we get high enough everyone might be able to get a whole new gang for free
But still.. lots of planning to do and we want to wait until the starter sets from the first campaign are at least shipping to the original backers.
I'm going to keep the pledges simple this time. Pledge whatever for a booster of your choice, add to your pledge for each additional one. Then I'll do starter set levels for people that might want one of them, and then maybe a 2 player bundle where you can get a rulebook, 2 starters and 2 boosters. Stuff like that. I'll probably have add on stuff like building kits and other goodies, but I'll keep that out of the pledge level stuff so it doesn't get confusing.
And then if things go really really well, I'll start adding in new gangs like last time. Planning a chinese worker gang, a carnival circus freak gang, and all girl gang and a gang of army rejects.. not civil war themed though since the game takes place much later, around 1890. But we'll see how it goes
It's coming.. just got delayed waiting on the final sculpts, I didn't get the greens until the day before I left for GenCon :( But those are in production now. Basically sculpting just took longer than expected and it pushed everything back a good 4-6 weeks.
For the next one I'm going to list the ship dates away longer than last time, and that way folks will be happier when they get stuff early I'll probably make it like 6 months in advance for the first round of sculpts, then add a new month for each new batch.

Well on you.
We got in on the first one, was our first contact with Kickstarter. If at all possible we will be in on the next one as well.
The Army Builder files are now listed on the main updates menu now Just took em a few days to get it added, now it should automatically update as we add new characters to it and stuff
I still have my rulebook for this . Am watching with interest! May ping the local Infinity players about it once the starter sets are released, since the buy-in is so low and they already have tons of terrain made up.
Granted, the theme of the terrain is wrong but it would work to try it out, since the rules seemed nice and straight-forward.
Since you mentioned you're planning to have the prior Kickstarter rewards out before doing the next, and you're thinking of October for the next... does that mean the gang boxes may be available this coming month?
Since you mentioned you're planning to have the prior Kickstarter rewards out before doing the next, and you're thinking of October for the next... does that mean the gang boxes may be available this coming month?
I'm really hoping in the next couple days I should have the final master metals, so if they're all ok they can start on the production molds and figs and then we just gotta get the boxes and cards printed.
So we'll start by sending out the backer's orders first, then do the retail release. but for the next kickstarter I'm thinking we might include the starter sets in that too. So if you're impatient (like me) you can just get the starters from your FLGS or buy em online. But if you're patient and you want free goodies you can add them to your pledge Will probably be at least a 2 month wait if you do that though, because last time when we got the dice made it took 8 weeks to make them. Or maybe we can work it out where you can pay extra shipping and we send you what we have when we have it, etc.
Game Salute is on the way to PAX right now, so next week when everyone is back and settled we'll be finalizing everything and then planning out the next campaign. Right now it's all just off the top of my head
Necros wrote: Cool ... yeah Infinity fans might like it, some people have been calling it wild west infinity But I was going for more like wild west necromunda
Sold to the man in the black crossing the desert.
I'd be happy to back a kickstarter especially if we got the starter sets in the new one.
very minor setback. Luckily we caught it early. Got the masters back for the vigilance committee and mexicans. The wider brims on the sombreros didn't work out, once the molds were made the hats were all bent and folded. Some of them may have been passable, or fixable with greenstuff (The FineCast Way), but I want everything to be perfect so I it's back to the molding board. Iron Wind is going to have their sculptor touch up the hats and thicken them a little so that they won't bend next time. So this means I won't get the new masters till next week. However, they have a break in their schedule next week and if all goes well thats when the production figs will happen if all goes well with the new masters
In the meantime, the sheriff, doctor and susana all came out OK, so I'll be painting those masters up in the meantime. Have to prime tonight while there's a break in humidity. There was also some bending with the tabs under the feet, but I didn't think that was really a big deal. Most of them are too long to fit in the slots in the bases anyway because of the foot positions, so I figure most folks will be trimming them or chopping them off anyway.
They were OK when they made the molds, I think when they made the master figures the sombreros curled up as the metal cooled. Also happened to the hat on the deputy that's kneeling with the 2 pistols out.
Not sure, that's what I was assuming happened. But the way I've seen em done is ya pour the metal into the spin caster thingy, then it makes the figs, then you pop em out and throw em in the bins. At any rate, they'll fix em up for me and everything is still pretty much on track.
Planning out all the new figures that will be a part of the Kickstarter. Should give an idea of what the figures will be equipped with and the professions. I'm planning to have 1 artist do all 3 concepts for a pack, and the same sculptor do all 3 figures for a pack, so everything will match better I know the styles were a little mixed in the first few starters, but I'm going to try to minimize that going forward.
yep! I'll be sending a bunch his way along with the other sculptors too Going to give each sculptor 3 at a time so their whole set will have the same look & feel. And this way just doing like 3 per month or so will be better than 6 in 2 months, so I don't have to wait as long to get the greens. Figured this way I can have a kind of steady stream of new releases for retail instead of just one big splash release then nothing for months.

Howdy folks! Today I have a couple of things to share.
First off, we now have a French translation of our rules available. These were translated by BWG fan Flavien Champenois. It’s actually the previous version of our rulebook, but as many of you know the rules are pretty much the same with just a few minor changes. You can click here to download the French rules. It's both the rulebook and optional campaign rules.
Next I wanted to share some photos of the newer models. Here are 4 of the Vigilance Committee and 1 of the Bandidos Mexicanos. Gramps Fillickson, Martin Williams, Rick Dawson, Dr. Trent Dougall and Susana la Loba.
Just 5 more figures to finish painting and then we can get the boxes all printed up! Almost there…!
Yeah, I'm painting everything for now. At first I was going to have Golem paint everything, but we ended up with so many delays that I didn't want to add an even longer wait to get everything released. Just mailing the figs back and for the to the UK would be an extra 2-3 weeks alone.
Eventually though we'll have them do the official paint jobs once we get off the ground and can plan out the new releases better. I'll probably have the do the official paint jobs for the booster packs in the next kickstarter
Getting concepts started for the characters that will be in the next Kickstarter. Here's the Clancy Gang prospector Uncle Zeke and one of his henchmen, Hugh Brocket. Hugh lost his hand to a mining accident, so he'll have a variety of extra appendages attached to his belt for easy access
These were done by Wayne O'Connor. These are just preliminary sketches for now.
Tonight or tomorrow I should be getting some sketches for the vigilance committee too
Getting there.. 2 down 3 to go should have them done this weekend so next week we'll be able to get the boxes going. I have the clancy and bloodwolf box files done already, but we have to wait and print everything at the same time or else it'll be real expensive.. same with the cards :/
We were going to go with the plastic mantic boxes at first, but when all was said and done they were just too bulky and cost too much to ship from the UK. So now it's going to be a cardstock box about the same size as GW's, and we'll have foam sheets inside to keep everything in place. The foam was cheaper than getting a vacuum formed plastic insert thing made, and we figured people could reuse the foam if they want, for transporting their minis and stuff
Just a quick question, are you still pushing things out for kickstarter backers or are you having things for sale for those of us that didn't get in on this?
Both We'll be shipping out the old Kickstarter orders first, then everything will be available on our online store and in FLGSes. But, also in the new Kickstarter we do we'll have the original starter sets available too.
So, if you're impatient you can buy them online as soon as they're available, or you can jump in on Kickstarter #2 and get them a month later with some free goodies too We'll probably be launching the new campaign at the very end of the month, or beginning of Oct. We want to make sure we have the orders for the original campaign under way first.
^This. I missed out on this Kickstarter (I... didn't understand what it was back then... how things change fast these days) but some of those models are gorgeous. And Necros sounds like a good chap, so I'd like to get on that wagon.
I'm on a roll this morning. Jokemeister that I am.
Mathieu Raymond wrote: ^This. I missed out on this Kickstarter (I... didn't understand what it was back then... how things change fast these days) but some of those models are gorgeous. And Necros sounds like a good chap, so I'd like to get on that wagon.
Those buildings are way, way, way superior to... others we know of.
I think I might buy the £45 starter kit as a graduation gift (yes, I learned overnight that I will be an officially licensed teacher)
Do you have american distribution on those buildings? Intellectually, I am all for the concept of VAT, but my poorer student wallet right now doesn't likey.
Those buildings aren't made by me, they're by Battle Flag in the UK. We just gave them permission to use the name and make some of their buildings with signs that reference different things in the game's fluff. The hotel is my favorite, but it's HUGE
GameCraft makes some really nice buildings, we sold a lot of them in our first Kickstarter. And Sarissa is good too. But if you go with Sarissa make sure you get the "heroic" kind or they might look too small.
We will have add-on building bundles in the next Kickstarter though. One will be a Battle Flag bundle with a gallows and some other goodies, and the other will be a GamCraft bundle with a couple of buildings. I think will be a $60 add-on item, but you get lots of stuff. If you order the BF bundle, they will ship them to you, but the GameCraft bundle will come from us.. that's just because BF is in the UK and decided it would be easier if they ship the bundles themselves.
We’re planning a new Kickstarter campaign around the end of September or beginning of October. I posted some details here and there in our message boards, but a lot of details have changed a bit. The goal will be to get the funding to make a series of new figures for each gang, and if it’s really successful we’ll be able to add new gangs too. Each of the 4 main gangs will get 3 “Support Packs” of 3 models each, 9 new figures per gang and 36 new figures total if all goes well. Each set will feature one of the professions not in a gang’s starter set, so in the end a full gang would be 14 members with 1 of each profession and a nice selection of henchmen for the cannon fodder every gang needs!
So, now I’m starting to get new concept art done for the characters that will be in the next Kickstarter. Here’s the the first 2 for the Clancy Gang, Uncle Zeke the prospector and one of his henchmen, Hugh Brocket. Hugh lost his hand to a mining accident, so he’ll have a variety of extra appendages attached to his belt for easy access
We'll be getting into the weird west stuff soon In fact if the new Kickstarter gets high enough we'll start adding some creatures and new professions like Engineers and Monster Hunters as stretch goals. It will have to be pretty high though since we want to get the main gangs fleshed out and start doing our new gangs too.
But if we don't get high enough, that stuff will all go in Kickstarter #3 for the boxed game next year
Oh .. yeah, the world is going to be changing a lot, but gradually. Planning a stand-alone board game kind of like Super Dungeon Explore or Dust Tactics, really all the same rules just you play on a board with squares for movement and distance. Then it will also act as an expansion for the skirmish game so you can use the stuff in the board game in skirmish games, or your favorite gangs in the board game. The overall theme is going to be based on Skinwalkers (Werewolves and other were things) and it will also include a lot of US & indian folklore critters like jackalopes and chupacabras
The critters will be treated like pets attached to another model, they'll be a 25xp model (half as tough as a henchman) and will form a mini unit with their handler who will need a special skill to train animals. Engineers will be a bit steam punky but not over the top. They're inventors who will have special gadgets and weapons like gatling pistols. Monster hunters will be like bounty hunters, only they get a bonus when they attack Supernatural creatures. And Supernatural creatures will have different abilities based on what they are, like a Skinwalker will have Bloodlust, so if they take someone out of action they get a little tougher
That's all a ways off though. In the end I want it to be where you can have a straight up wild west gunfight, but you also have the option of playing weird west too. Just depends on what you and your friends like best.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And, I just got this pic.. these will be the bonus dice for the next kickstarter. Black & blue swirls with 2 gold Colt 45's on the #6 spot
Necros wrote: We'll be getting into the weird west stuff soon In fact if the new Kickstarter gets high enough we'll start adding some creatures and new professions like Engineers and Monster Hunters as stretch goals. Either way, all of that sounds great - and thanks for the update!
Busy day! Also got the 1st sketch for the Vigilance Committee. Here's Christian Kluge. World Renowned Gambler (according to him) and owner of the Golden Coin Saloon.
Game Craft looks fantastic. Sarissa too, but I'm always leery of buying from our English overlords. As soon as the Kickstarter season is over (heh, I wish), I will update my gaming table.
Von Skyfury: how come your flag keeps changing from USA to Canada, are you travelling at the moment?

Nope, it should always be Canada =P
And I can vouch for Sarissa. Great prices, great quality and very fast shipping.
So after a long chat with the Game Salute last night, we're gonna take a slightly different approach to the new campaign. Instead of just expanding the existing gangs, we're going to start off with getting 4 new gang starters done first, then that will give us 8 different gangs total and after the 4 new ones are funded we'll move on to the 3-man add on packs for each one. We figured this would give the game a lot more variety.
So these new gangs will likely be...
Widowmakers - All girl gang, more like gunslingers than "saloon girls" though
The Flying Zarconis - carnival / circus gang. Thinking about making all the henchmen be clowns, but old timey clowns not ronald McDonald looking...
The Silent Fist Clan - Asian railroad workers who are secretly ninjas in disguise. Will be all Asian types though, not just Chinese.
Wiley's Rangers - US army rejects. They got sent to Blackwater Gulch to help stop all the gang violence, but now they just want to get all the gold they can for themselves. These won't be Civil War looking soldiers though, since the game takes place in 1890.
So each of those will start out with 5 guys per set, and then we'll do the 3-man add ons after they all get unlocked.
I'm liking the concept of the Widowmakers and dare I say, if these Rangers are based off a certain wild group of guys, a certain bunch, I'll be very, very happy indeed.
The Silent Fist Clan - Asian railroad workers who are secretly ninjas in disguise. Will be all Asian types though, not just Chinese.
If you're going to use the term 'ninja', then they should just be Japanese. While the Chinese (and every where else in history) had Assassins, ninja is a Japanese term.
Wiley's Rangers - US army rejects. They got sent to Blackwater Gulch to help stop all the gang violence, but now they just want to get all the gold they can for themselves. These won't be Civil War looking soldiers though, since the game takes place in 1890.
Mathieu Raymond wrote: Game Craft looks fantastic.
I've locked it into Canada for you now - it may take a bit, and you may have to log out and log back in, but you're all Canada all the time now!
They won't be real ninjas, just meant they will all have a martial arts kind of skill.. in the game it'll give them a melee combat bonus. I kind of wanted to do a mix of different Asian themes, but also mixed in with the wild west stuff too.
I've actually never seen the wild bunch. I'll have to look it up on Netflix.
Also planning a bunch of movie/tv reference characters for bonus figures. We'll have Kurt Wyatt and Dr. Kilmer, John W. Duke, The Outlaw Clint Wales, and more
I'll be using my same sculpting crew as before. Might be looking for some more too though so we can get everything done in a timely-er manner. Gonna be lots more minis than last time if all goes well.
"Any man don't wanna get killed better clear on out the back. "
Though Josey Wales is also a great choice, great movie, one that a lot of people seem to gloss over for some reason, prolly because it's all about slaughtering blue shirts.
Josey Wales was my favorite of Clint's old school western films.
a Pale Rider type character might be fun too... why not both? And you could get away with the name Pale Rider too... Make it iconic, fitting into the supernatual AND the west... just like the movie, what'dya know

I think mostly because it was just later on in his whole 'Western' career.
The Man With No Name being more iconic and all that...
Having said all that, I'm pretty sure that Josey Wales was well received, reviewed, etc. Ironically enough, way more than any of the 'Man With No Name' series of movies!
I hate to admit it but for someone making a western game, I really haven't seen enough of the classics. Never even saw Josey Wales, but when I think of Clint as a cowboy that's the name that pops into my head. For me it was more films from the 80's and beyond like Tombstone or Young Guns, and a lot of Hell on Wheels since it's on now and fresh in my mind
Hmmm...wife and I are not as excited about new gangs as we would have been the expansions, since we dont even have our first gangs yet. However, we would probably be in for the widowmaker gang and a bunch of character minis, especially if they are Eastwood and Tomb Stone inspired.
The expansions will still be in there, just going to be doing the new gangs too The way I had it set up first was to do all of the expansion packs first, then new gangs but we decided if we did that, we could end up with a bunch of big gangs, and then a couple of extra starters that had no extra options. So this way we can do it so all the gangs will have a chance to get some extras added on too. So, we'll do 4 new gangs, then 8 expansion packs, then 8 more, then 8 more
The Serenity Gang
Hal Serenity and his band of outlaws. Expert stagecoach driver Alan "Dry" Dryson and his amazonian wife Gina. Hired gun Sue Corne, who despite putting on a rough persona is smarter than he appears and loves his mamma. All around fix-it girl next door, Jewel Lee.
The Docs
The Hoover clan loves to help people. As such they all ended up going into the medical profession. However when their hometown, Gallant Fray, was razed by thugs, unrelenting mountaineers known as the Khyber Men, loyal to dastardly Theo Masterson and his associate Dave Ross they set out on a course to bring these desperadoes to justice and lend a hand to whomever needs it along the way.
The three brothers: Doctor Hartnell Hoover, Doctor Patrick Hoover and Doctor Jon Hoover. They are the oldest of the Hoovers.
Their sons: Doctor Tom Hoover, Doctor Peter Hoover, Doctor Colin Hoover and Doctor Sylverster Hoover
Their sons: Doctor Christopher Hoover, Doctor David Hoover and Doctor Matt Hoover
I hope that's your own creation there, and isn't official.
I like your overall creations, and you seem to have done it well.... but the names on that last group.. I can't stand them.
"Hoover."
I worked for a Hoover family before, and THEY were the dastards and thugs. To this day, I don't even like that brand of vacuum.
I couldn't even buy that gang in a game, if it existed.

The Docs are a thinly veiled Doctor Who reference. I think a gang of Doctor Who inspired cowboy era characters would bust a kickstarter wide open, that's why I tossed it out there. Ideally they'd all have seperate hand options so you could make a sprue with just sonic screwdrivers for fun.
We can halve Daleks too, just paint your mom's favorite salt shakers gold and you're all set
Don't really follow the show much, but I was actually thinking about having "The Doc" as a special character, and in the fluff people would refer to his phone booth thingy as his outhouse since it's the same shape. but then I started thinking if I'm going to do a time traveller reference, that Back to the Future would be fun since they went back to the wild west in part 3.
But we'll see I have stretch goals planned out all the way into the 300k's So far there's the 3 high end backer's characters from the last Kickstarter that will be bonus figs, plus Kurt Wyatt, Dr. Kilmer, John W. Duke, Clint Wales, Nevada Dave the treasure hunter, Dr. Emmitt, Martin McFox, and Ashford Campbell (with boomstick ).
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, also for Dr. Who reference, I was also thinking of having the doctor character in the asian gang named "Dr. Hu"
Got some new art Here is Janey Bower, the other henchman (henchwoman?). She was done by Wayne O'Connor. She'll be with Uncle Zeke and Hugh Brocket in the Clancy Gang Prospecting Team support pack.
And Lorrie Shakes, she'll be with Christian Kluge and Erik Jurgensen in the Vigiliance Committee Town Defenders support pack. Lorrie was done by Heath Foley.
Going to have the artists get started on the new starters now
Is it still possible even though gulch has reached it's funding goal, to conrtibute and get some of the cool stuff on offer? ( I have no idea how kickstarter works)
I had a look at the rules a few months ago and thought they looked cool, The sculpts are awesome, please for the love of god don't add any skulls.
Well, you won't be able to jump in on the old Kickstarter now that it's done. But as soon as the box sets are all ready you'll be able to order them off our website or get them at your local game store. We'll also be doing a new Kickstarter that you can join in on in about a month or so
Man, that Serenity gang would get my money very fast. Especially with stretch goals of a black preacher, a buttoned-up doctor and his dynamically posed sister taking names.
It depends how high we get I did add it in to the list though, but first we have to unlock the 4 new gangs we planned (Girls, circus, ninjas & US army rejects), then the add on packs for everything, then there will be 4 more new gangs followed by hopefully plastic horses, and then we'll do new sculpts of every gang leader on horseback.
yeah it looks like we'll both be starting around the same time. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of Kickstarters in October. I would have waited, but it's really not worth doing a campaign during xmas shopping season, and we don't want to wait till January since it takes so long to get minis sculpted and stuff. I don't want to do it right now though, because I want to make sure the stuff from our first Kickstarter is at least starting to ship.

Sounds like a good plan, Necros! I'm hoping the local Infinity group may be interested. Will the prior boxsets be up for normal sale by the time the KS launches?
Yep Well, we will send them out to the original Kickstarters first, then prepare everything for retail afterwards. The original sets will also be available in the new kickstarter, so people can add them to their pledge and they can ship as soon as the campaign ends, or they can just order them online if they don't want to wait.
We have the character details for the 4 new starter sets all set now. Artists are about to start doing concepts. We splurged and will be doing the concept art in full color as well, so they might take a little longer to finish. I'll post pics as I get em, but here's the characters so far..
The Flying Zarconis - Old timey circus freaks
Mario Zarconi (Leader) - Doctor - Shotgun, 2 bowie knives
The Bladesman - Wrassler - 2 dueling sabres, 2 sets of throwing knives
The Bearded Lady - Gunslinger - 2 pistols, 2 small knives
Mr. Snuggies the Clown- Henchman - Sledgehammer, throwing knives
Twinklenose the Clown - Henchman - 2 pistols
The Secret Fist - Asian themed railroad workers & martial artists
Mr. Foo (Leader) - Wrassler - spiked brass knuckles, shotgun
Chang - Gunslinger - longarm, 2 pistols, hatchet
Dr. Hoo - Doctor - Winchester, 2 bowie knives
Wu Fang - Henchman - 2 small knives, ninja stars (throwing knives)
Jen Choi - Henchman - 2 pistols, bowie knife
Wilde's Rangers - US army themed
Sergeant Wilde (Leader) - Bounty Hunter - 2 Colt 45's, Cavalry Saber
Corporal Thompson - Gunslinger - Winchester repeater, pistol, bowie knife
Private Connors - Henchman - Henry repeater, bowie knife
Private Watson - Henchman - Longarm, bowie knife
Private Ambler - Henchman - Henry repeater, bowie knife
Gatling Gun
(this gang has 3 henchman and 1 professional, instead of the usual 2 & 2 like other starters. The gatling gun is a special weapon that makes up the difference in points)
Yep, like before it'll be $30 per starter set and you can pick any one you want including the original 4. I have another 4 more planned for if we raise enough cash to unlock them
The old starters will also be available to buy normally too when we launch the campaign or soon after, so you could just buy it online. but if you add it to your pledge you can get free goodies And the original starters can ship out as soon as the campaign is over too unless you want to wait and get everything all at once to save on shipping.
could I have my stuff from the first KS shipped with stuff from this one (knowing full well I'll be waiting for it a long time, but with KoW, SW, Reaper, Dreadball, DFG... you get it ) to save on shipping?
Sure that can be arranged. I still have to work out the details with Game Salute but what I think we're going to do is convert your pledge amount into store credit for their online store, so we can take care of shipping easier. Then you can just go and order what you want when you want.
What are the time scales on all of this? For us unfortunates that didn't/couldn't/wouldn't participate in the kickstarter, when do you anticipate all of this being available for general purchase?
Necros wrote: Sure that can be arranged. Sounds good, but won't that be hell with the inclusion of stretch goal stuff etc? Anyway, good to hear ,thanks!
For regular retail I'm saying "some time in October" We'll get the orders for Kickstarters out of the way first. I'd like to have them available for retail right when we start the next campaign. Just gotta get the boxed ordered and then packed up at this point.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also .. since time is ticking away and we still haven't finished the box art files to send to the printers (another day or 2 ...) it's looking like the boxed-up starter sets will be done in October now as it will take a couple of weeks to print everything. So I think what we're going to do is offer everyone the option to get just the figures unboxed, and we can send them now. Well right now we have the Clancy Gang and Bloodwolf Tribe figures, the Vigilance Committee and Bandidos Mexicanos should be arriving next week.
Anyway, just thought that would be a better option for people that don't want to wait any longer. I want to try and keep everyone happy and not delay the process if you don't care about a cardboard box
If you go this route though, we won't have the character cards to send so you could download them as a PDF kind of like the blank cards I have on the site now, or if you want the nice glossy printed cards you'll have to wait. Just doing this for the folks that just want the minis and want them now.
I'll do a new update on the KS page later today with more info once I get a date from Iron Wind for the last batch of figures.
Little update this morning, just got some WIP shots of the Gatling Gun for Wilde's Rangers. It's a 3D render, went 3D on this one so we could make it accurate-er looking. Not sure yet at this point but we might do it in resin instead of metal in the end.
This is a WIP so there's still more details to add and stuff
thanks .. I wasn't expecting it, we were just chatting about maybe doing the gun as a 3D model and then I guess he dove right in. This was by Bob Naismith. Will probably come on a 60mm base maybe with some extra bitz like barrels of gunpowder and extra ammo and stuff, if there will be room for it.
Cooking up the special rules for it now. Thinking it will be treated like a terrain piece so it will provide cover, and shooting it will work like an explosive since it sprays bullets all over the place, so it will hit every model within d6" of it's target. will be weaker than dynamite, but have a much longer range. Or maybe have it where it can hit D6 models, then you roll to hit each one separately. But I want it to be able to hit good guys and bad guys, since it's supposed to be inaccurate.
Could give it a number of shots per turn, to represent the skill of the man cranking it, the possibility of it jamming, or even "ammo" left in the gun before a reload.
the chain gun was horribly unreliable in American wars, so you might want to give it a chance of jamming on a roll of a 1.
yeah I would like it to jam too. How about like this..
Pick your target, roll 1D6 so the gun can hit everyone within D6" of the target. Then for each person you roll to hit like normal. If you roll all 1's, the gun jams and you can't shoot anyone else with it. So someone with a ranged combat of 1 only gets to roll 1 D6 to hit, so they have a bigger chance to make it jam. If their RC is higher you get to roll more dice, so there's less of a chance for it to jam. But, since the gang is going to be more hennchmen, most will have lower RC's.
When it jams I was thinking anyone can unjam it, they just have to walk up to it and try to fix it instead of attacking someone, and make an intellect roll of 4+. For every new jam, you need to get 1 more successful d6 on the int roll. So if it jammed 3 times, you'll need to roll 3 4+'s in your int roll. if it jams a lot, it could break beyond repair unless someone really smart tries to fix it.
Just finished the first set of PDF character cards for the Clancy Gang. The starter sets will come with nice glossy printed cards, but if you lose them or just want to check out the gang's stats and stuff, you can use the cards in the PDF
Got a preview of a couple of new characters from the artist today, Heath Foley. Here are Mr. Foo, leader of the Secret Fist and Chang, his right hand man and an infamous gunslinger. The Secret Fist is one of the new gangs that will be featured in our next Kickstarter campaign that we’ll be launching later this month. They are an Asian themed gang based on Chinese railroad workers, but with our own spin to make them look like a gang that could take on any of the other gangs in Blackwater Gulch.
Thanks .. but as usual I posted it too early... just got the rest of the gang! So from left to right we have Chang the Gunslinger, Dr. Hoo, Mr. Foo the gang leader and also a wrassler, followed by henchmen Jen Choi and Fu Tang. If it looks too small you should be able to click it for a high res version
And here they are again, you can click to enlarge Along with the gang bio. I'll be getting the artwork for the other 3 new gangs over the next week or so and I'll post them as soon as I get them
The Blackwater Lines Railroad employed many Chinese and Asian workers and laborers, but once the railroad was finished, many were simply laid off with no place to go. Some left town, others stayed but found it hard to get by on their own in a town full of people who didn’t understand their language or culture. Soon after, many Asians banded together to form the Secret Fist and now run the Oriental Quarter to protect other citizens of their kind.
The Secret Fist is lead by Mr. Foo, a massive man who operates a small pig farm just on the edge of town. His livestock are often used to hide evidence, they’ll eat anything or anyone for the right price. Chang is his right hand man, an adept gunsligner who’s sixguns never miss their mark. His old friend, Dr. Hoo, runs a small herbalist shop in town, and secretly supplies opiates to the more well-to-do in town. The exotic beauty Jen Choi and her cousin Fu Tang round out the Secret Fist as henchmen, running odd jobs around town and always ready to back up their friends in a fight.
The Secret Fist is a new gang for Blackwater Gulch. They will be featured in our upcoming Kickstarter campaign in couple of weeks.
We run a Western miniature campaign at our local gaming store. A great way to introduce more people into the hobby!
Will definitely get the Chinese gang - even though I personally think several of the characters looks way out of place (more like three Japanese Manga/Anime-ish characters - and only two that is even vaguely Chinese).
No Kung Fu references, no Mandarin collars, No Dragons, no Chinese blades...
This is just the first 5, plenty more to unlock as the campaign goes There is a dragon though, on the girl's dress.
One of the other characters we unlock later will be more samauri looking, he'll have a katana and wakizashi instead of a cavalry saber and bowie knife, that sort of thing. This gang will be more of a mix of several different asian themes, not just Chinese.
Why on earth would someone want to add Samurai vibes to a Chinese railroad worker gang?
There were extremely few Japanese in the states at that time (and certainly no "Samurai") - and any Japanese would rather be found dead than around Chinese (and vise versa).
The only thing missing would then be true fantasy creatures like "Ninja"...
Moronic.
As stupid as if you had 15th century South American: Azteks, Inca and Maya "indians" among the BloodWolf tribe...
Or Tuaregs, Zulu warriors in a Afro-American gang - led by a Pharao ("Hey, they are from the same continent - let us mix and match nationalities and time periods to spice them up!").
Borderline racist, and not Wild West at all.
Why not just make them Chinese instead of "Asian":
I have no problems with Wu/Foo (and hopefully will not have to meet his pigs).
Also, I like Dr. Hoo (trying to grow a beard like him myself) and I can live with the Ronin hat (with is kinda cool - I've got one myself) on Chang.
It's the "samauri" (sic!) vibes - and the uncalled-for "ninja shuriken" on chinese gangers - that is bothering me.
Why the urge to ruin a perfecly good themed Wild West gang by adding, I quote: "a katana and wakizashi" and similar stuff?
Remember in the old west, attitudes being what they were
anybody in the least Asian would have been labled a heathen chinese (well worse probably) and discriminated against accordingy
ending up in the same ghetto part of town (or more likely tented camp). If that Japanese or Korean or whoever had skills usefull to the gang they would be used (if they didn't end up dead)

ending up in the same ghetto part of town (or more likely tented camp). If that Japanese or Korean or whoever had skills usefull to the gang they would be used (if they didn't end up dead)
This is kind of what I was trying to get at .. In 1980 in the middle of a gold rush town full of outlaws.. would your average gunslinger know the difference between Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese? I dunno maybe I'm wrong, I just kind a felt like they'd be a minority and the townsfolk would lump them all together as one big group of "orientals" and they'd all be in 1 part of town sticking mostly to themselves.
The samuari idea might be a little to much, I agree. but, I had a fan request that so I thought I'd look into it. I was going to have him be a bounty hunter actually... his father was murdered by an outlaw years ago, and all he has left of him are the swords he used to carry.
The Meiji restoration had created many broke samurais, with nothing more than their weapons and an inkling of family honour, at best. They would be very good bounty hunters, biter enough not to care about their mark.
>would your average gunslinger know the difference between Chinese, Japanese,
No - but there would be no Japanese there. At all.
Until Meiji, Japan was a closed country - and almost no one emigrated.
One single individual might in some strange way have ended up in this town and in a gang - but giving him samurai gear and abilities would be as if you added a Viking (with horned helmet?) to a Scandinavian gang.
>Korean
... and the Koreans had almost no formal martial arts training whatsoever until around 1930 - and certainly no katana-shaped weaponry.
This despite some recent claims (look up the term "Koreating history".
I.e. your sword wielding hero really ought to be a true chinese - with floppy swords and all No place for katanas in the US (atleast not until WW2 soldiers had plundered Japan).
>The samuari
You mean samurai, samuari is not a word.
>...idea might be a little to much...
Yes.
>... but, I had a fan request ...
So anything goes if you are a fan?
Can I have a Zulu Warrior in a gang?
>... his father was murdered by an outlaw years ago, and all he has left of him are the swords he used to carry.
And the Zulu warrior can carry the lion loin cloth, the zebra pelted shield and short spear of his father?
Sorry for sounding so harsh - but I really think you are on the wrong path here, leaving a somewhat realistic setting for the sake of introducing "cool" elements.
I am a Japan-nerd - and feel sad whenever the real history is raped (like in "The Last Samurai"-film and the whole Ninja myth).
By all means, add a Japanese delegation from the Meiji court (in time realistic formal english long coats and top hats)
- but please at least consider staying away from stuff that might sell well (such as samurai, pirate zombies and bare chested ladies) but would ruin the feel of your game.
Just my two Yen of wisdom (?).
(and I am still going the buy the gang - even if it gets "Samuraiified".
2 yen don't buy much, even these days. 20 years of economic stagnation will do that to your economy.
Matthews showed up in Japan in 1852-ish, and the restoration was in 1868 onward... so a destitute heir could make sense. And since it was the US that shook them out of it, they could have emigrated there. I'm just saying. Don't impose a whole cultural trope on every individual.
Although a proper Japanese gang would be nice. You could have the front of long coats, top hats and white gloves, but with the back end of seedier, poorer individuals.
>Although a proper Japanese gang would be nice. You could have the front of long coats, top hats and white gloves, but with the back end of seedier, poorer individuals.
I would definitely buy it.
Hopefully without shuriken, ninjas or tengu though
Well, if a fan tosses an idea at me that I like, chances are I'm gonna run with it .. he just did a bunch of work for me, 1 less thing for me to come up with :p
Really though .. it's a historical setting, but I think of it as more like a hollywood action movie than a history lesson (because I don't know enough about history to teach anyone anything). Blackwater Gulch is a fictional place, and pretty much everything in my head about the town comes from movies like Tombstone, and the game red dead redemption. In fact that game is pretty much what gave me the whole idea for BWG in the first place
But I see what you're saying... I won't let it get too far fetched (until the skinwalkers, chupacabras and jackalopes show up in the boxed game next year :p). there will be some in normal western dress in the gang too, gotta have the San Fransisco C---sucka in there somewhere....
So on the topic of not getting too far fetched, here's some early sketches for the Flying Zarconis (and I just realized none of them are actually flying...)
I know they don't look too "westerny" .. gonna be toning down the color, since I don't think clowns were so colorful back then, more like normal dress but with clowny makeup. Each professional in the gang will be like a main act kind of performer, but all the henchmen will be clowns. The leader will be Mario Zarconi, a little person based on Sansom from the show Carinvalle. I'd like to get a mystic kind of character in there too, like a fortune teller.
The other 2 new gangs will be more normal a US army themed gang and a gang of all girls, but gunslinger types not saloon girls.
If we get enough unlocked to get to the next 4 new gangs, there will be a sort of mafia kind of gang that controls the gambling in town, a mexican army gang of federales, a gentleman's club that's all rich guys who hunt lowlifes for sport, and a western version of the crew from Firefly (another fan suggestion :p) .. will give me an excuse to watch the series again, for research of course...
I'd be in on the all-girl (getting Dusty Paige anyhoo), the japanese gang (no ninjas, kendoka was right about this one, it'd spoil it) and the FIREFLY CREW!!!
This is full of win. And with my gaming group, the amount of minis makes them affordable gifts so I can pass the virus along and I don't end up with their 100 models-army in my painting queue.
Cool, I'm confident we'll be able to unlock all the new gangs. After that I'm hoping we can get enough to do plastic horses, then we'll start doing alt sculpts of all of the leaders and professionals with them on horseback.
Got lots of bonus figures planned, most are based on different movie characters.
The circus gang is meant to be more of a comical kind of gang, but hopefully won't be too over the top.. like the orcs & goblins of the game.. since in the grim darkness of the wild west, there is only stuff painted brown and gray.
hmm.. just noticed my sig banner is pretty old.. guess I should add my own models to it one of these days...
anybody in the least Asian would have been labled a heathen chinese (well worse probably) and discriminated against accordingy
ending up in the same ghetto part of town (or more likely tented camp). If that Japanese or Korean or whoever had skills usefull to the gang they would be used (if they didn't end up dead)
As logical as that sounds, that in no way makes it accurate or even fairly plausible. Chinese, Japanese and Korean immigrants would never mix in any sort of likely history.
History stuff is noted. I do want to at least kinda follow the real thing, so I'll ensure that future characters have a more Chinese feel. That said though, I do want it to be a fictional game, more hollywood than history.. but I still want it to feel authentic. I know I can't make everyone happy, but I'll try my best
There will be a few that are in normal western clothing too, a couple of dusters or suits thrown in, for San Francisco Man at least
The mini sized rulebook we're doing now is mostly "just the rules" kind of like the small rulebooks that the WFB and 40K starter sets have, and I'll be updating the optional campaign rules PDF pretty soon. I'd say probably around this time next year after the game has been out a while and it's more established (so there's lots of content) we'll start doing a full sized hardback rulebook full of fluff and cool art, modeling guides, etc. Rules won't really change though, so if you have but then we'll also do a 2 player starter set that will have the small sized rulebook in it.
Imho, I don't think the hardback edition absolutely needs to be a goal. Don't get me wrong, I love books, they make me feel good when I am surrounded by them. But it is quite an investment, and Mordheim, BFG, Necromunda... they never had a hardback, and they failed more because of a lack of support rather because the book was meh.
Read through the rules saturday. Simple, no fuss. Easy to learn and fast to play. This'll be great for my ATP friends (Acute Time Poverty).
I'm really itching to buy some mdf buildings now. Von Skyfury showed me his Sarissa built models and the quality was impressive. I think I'm done with my old foamcore buildings. They had a good run, but I need to move on to better toys.
Hardback rulebook won't be in this Kickstarter.. that's just something I want to get to eventually, and hopefully release without needing a Kickstarter anymore when the time comes.
I like the wood buildings a lot too, I think I like Battle Flag's the best, they have a lot of detail. The ginormous hotel might be pricey but I think their smaller buildings are a good price.
We're finalizing the details for the new sets now. Currently we were planning for 4 new gangs, then 3 3-man add on packs for each gang, then 4 more new gangs. Decided to just get all the new gangs done first, and drop 2 of the later gangs so we'll start with 6. The 2 new ones will be the Dockside Gang who are kind of a bunch of drifters that settled along the river and that's their turf, and often have run-ins with the river boat Tranquility's crew
Currently going to be something like this...
Dockside Gang
Dr. B.N. Belfree (Leader) Doctor, Smith & Wesson Revolver, Winchester Repeater, Large Axe
Chinco Benito Jose Martinez Valdez (Aka Paco) - Bounty Hunter, Colt .45, Remington Rolling Block Rifle & Machete
Tennessee - Gunslinger, Colt .45, Remington Rolling Block Rifle & Bowie Knife
Eddie Escobar - Henchman, Volcanic Pistol, Tomahawk
Mongo - Henchman, 2 hatchets & throwing knives
Tranquility Crew
Captain Nathan Reynolds (Leader) - Gambler with colt 45 & 2 Bowie Knives
Dr. Simon - Doctor with Derringer Pocket Pistol & Bowie Knife
Adam James - Bounty Hunter with Colt 45, Rolling Block Rifle & Long Barrel Shotgun
Zoe Blackburn - Henchman with 2 Smith & Wesson revolvers
Julie, Ship's Mechanic - Henchman with large wrench (counts as miner's pick), volcanic pistol
Might move Zoe over to be a Gunslinger in one of the support packs, and have Father Sheppard take her place for the starter set... don't know what kind of weapons he'd have though :/
We're going to launch with the original 4 gangs though, and these last 2 will be for stretch goals to add next
Necros wrote: Might move Zoe over to be a Gunslinger in one of the support packs, and have Father Sheppard take her place for the starter set... don't know what kind of weapons he'd have though :/
Non-Combatant? Give him Healing/Morale boosting abilities instead?
Yeah I was thinking of something like that. We have Dr Simon as the healer, and if he was just a morale booster he would only matter if your gang is running away, otherwise he'd be useless and probably an easy target. I think I'd at least have to give him a shotgun or something, just because the game is all about shootouts.
Had another idea though of using this gang to introduce new professions that weren't going to be featured until the big boxed game next year, but they could kind of bridge the gap.
Engineers who can fix broke machines and invent different weapons like gatling pistols. Preacherman who can be a morale booster. Monster hunters who get bonuses to hit supernatural things. Supernatural things that get +1 HP if they take someone out of action.
Yes, and he knew way more about combat, etc, than a Shepherd should... It is certainly in character for him to be combat savvy. I could see him using just about any weapon.
Cool, that could work then .. rewatching the show now, been so long since I've seen it, even the movie is on SyFy like every other day. Never read any of the comics.. but I'll eventually need some other characters besides the main crew. Each gang is planned to have 14 members, a starter set of 5 and then 3 3-man support packs... eventually.
Hmm, yeah, you already have "James" as a gun heavy character in the starter, so Zoe may be a little redundant. The Pastor would offer a good opportunity to do something different, maybe.
The Shepherd was the "soul" of the crew, so I could see him giving a morale boost. He also always seemed to supply some critical info on jobs, whether about weapons, strategy, knowing of Niska, being able to show his ID to the Alliance and get supplies.... Is there any way he could buff his gangmates? Give them a strategic advantage? Go first bonus or something?
As for others, you must include Badger with his very fine hat. Saffron/Yolanda/Bridget would be great, and I also like the bounty hunter Jubal Early... He was terrifying.
As far as shepherd, I think he could be a very dynamic character for you. First, have him "mooch" a weapon off of one of the other starting on the board characters in his gang, then, instead of inflicting damage, any hits (etc) cause knockouts or pinning to use non-BWG terms.
Also, instead of providing stat boosts, have his "inspiration" give a random gangmember an extra action in the turn. Also, it can't be the same gangmember in back-to-back turns.
@ Necros You really should find the comics, or read a wiki with the spoilers. Book has an awesome history, IMO.
Shepherd should get "Mysterious Backstory" type bonus, not necessarily morale boosting.
He seemed to be the guy who came up with exactly what they needed when they needed it most, whether that was a spiritual thing, or a physical one.
In one of the comics, he is the distraction during the heist, and the getaway driver after.
So he could affect the game like the advisors for IG.
Maybe not contributing to the damage output directly, but giving some kind of blanket bonus?
At the very least, he could do "non-lethal" damage of some type.
Also, I second Zoe getting a repeating sawn-off. It's all I remember her ever using.
I can't wait to see the "Wash" model, with his special rule "Witty Réparté" Oh, and "River's" "What the hell just happened to me" move in close combat.
hmm .. yeah I'll have to think on it a while. Starting to feel like this gang won't really fit the template I set up (but that doesn't mean I won't make it :p ) where basically everyone but the leader is just like the characters that could be in any other gang.. similar weapons, skills and stats, but it's the leader that defines what special ability everyone in the gang gets. But then, everyone on the crew is someone special, and it kinda feels wrong to make any of them just be generic henchmen.. but every gang needs henchmen
I think I got em planned out now mostly.. I'll do the whole crew, and then mix in a few side characters, even if they were enemies. Could do saffron, the captain's ex-wife, jayne's ex-partner with the big beard (stitch?), mr. universe as a telegraph operator who hopes to never get killed with a sword, and badger who hopes to never become a lawyer in BSG or the king of hell in Supernatural.
For sheppard, I think I'll have him be a preacher which was one of the professions that will get added in the expansion next year.. and these guys probably won't be made and released for a while anyway since everything takes so long, so it could fit.
So I think the starter would be Not-Mal, Not-Jayne, Not-Simon, Not-Kaylee and Not-Inara. The other 3 professionals for the rest of the gang will be Not-Book, Not-River as a wrassler and Not-Zoe as a gunslinger.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, for something different.. been kicking around more ideas for the gatling gun.
Was thinking, it would have the shooty stats I was talking about before, but I'm thinking about having it cost 50xp, and have it in place of one of the henchmen in the starter set. It would have stats like any other model, so it could be destroyed, but since there were no robots in the wild west it would still require a gunner to shoot it. So the ranger starter set would be 4 men and 1 gatling gun. So this would mean 1 less model shooting, but one gun that could essentially hit everything in a 12" circle. This would also help keep the retail cost more in line with the other sets too.
And to keep every gang from having a gatling gun, was going to add the rule that you need 10 models in your gang for every 1 piece of artillery. But Sergeant Wilde's special gang ability would be that if he's the leader, the 10 model minimum is waived, but you still need 20 if you want to add a second one. I kinda doubt there will be many games that big, but ya never know...
yeah for me I like games around 10-12 models, after that the game starts to feel too long for me. But there's no limit so if people want big games they can do it.
Not sure if the gatling gun will be separate. We're not doing blisters at all, publisher wants all box sets, kinda like Dust tactics. They're paying extra for all that printing so who am I to complain
I think what we might do is offer the cannon as an add-on item in the kickstarter, and then possibly have that and other special bonus guys available separately at cons and stuff.
Yep, I'm still working on that too, writing out the rules and fluff for it. After this KS is done we'll be able to take the profit from that and sink it into the early development for the boxed game. I think for that to fly as KS#3 we're going to need to get a working prototype done first so that will be a bunch of sculpting that we'll have to do. Maybe not every single sculpt, but most of them.. so we can have a real "how to play" video. I think for a boxed game we're going to need to show a lot more than just concept art. So I'm thinking that campaign will be happening some time next summer.
On the gatling gun idea for the gang, if the leader is going to waive the 10 man rule for big guns, I think being able to squeeze in a second one at about the 14-15 man mark would be feasible if that is his only buff for the gang. Especially as it takes another figure to shoot it. So, the leader, 12 guys and 2 gatling guns (which you made it seem counts as guys) would be 15 models....
Good call .. I was thinking of something like that too.. like .. "If Sergeant Wylde leads your gang, the minimum number of models needed for an artillery piece is 5. Additional artillery pieces may be added every 10 models thereafter (15, 25, etc)."
A full gang with all 3 support packs will be 14 models, so adding a 2nd gatling gun would make it 15
I don't think it will be too bad. The gun also has some drawbacks too.. it's very inacurate always needing a +1 to hit so it only hits on 5's or 6's, it just sprays bullets all over the place. And it can jam too. It's also heavy, so it has to be pushed/pulled by another model and that guy can only move it their strength in inches, and it can't shoot the same turn it moves. So if the shooter has a str of 3, then he can only move the gun 3". When we get horses made, those will be able to pull it a lot better. Also been thinking of possibly limiting the gun to 1 per gang max, starting to think that in bigger games it could get kinda crazy if there's gatling guns and cannons going off all over the place, when it's meant to really be a a wild west shootout not a wild west wargame.
Then with the gun taking the place of one of your henchmen, if you're just fighting with 5 models per side, you're only going to be using 4 men with 1 activation each, where the other team will have 5 men.
Also, every leader will have some kind of unique skill only available to his gang. A gang leader can also lead people from other gangs too, but only people affiliated with the leader will get his bonus skills. So some of the other leaders might have different skills that some folks like better
So yeah, it can spit out a lot of shots, but it also has it's share of drawbacks too.
hehe .. actually.. plan is to one day get to the point where we can do some plastic stage coach model kits, so of course there will be an option to have a gatling gun on top
If the campaign get's super high, we'll add that to the list of stuff to unlock.. but it's going to be a pretty huge stretch since plastic molds are so expensive :/
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's one of the little videos we put together for the Kickstarter.. how to set up and a couple rounds of shooting
And I've just made a deal to offload my terrain on an ATP* friend. Looks like old west will be the hot ticket to my heart this winter. I have this vision of mixing those buildings with some raised walkways à la Infinity and some brick-built buildings to give it an eclectic steampunk feel.
*Acute Time Poverty. I kid you not, the term exists.
Cool .. micro art studio just put out some great looking steampunk walkways that would work really well. My idea for the town is it's along a big river at the bottom of a canyon, so if I ever get around to building big themed tables they will be more like multi level areas with lots of boardwalks and raised walkways going over little creeks and streams. After we get the KS out of the way I'm hoping we can get ome artists to start working on town concept art to go in the big rulebook we'll do one day.
Is completing / making add-ons for the existing gangs coming first, or the new gangs first?
I remember you saying you envisioned eventually having 3 add-on packs of 3 models apiece per gang. Personally, I think I'd be more looking forward to the original gangs getting filled out, although I'll be watching all of it with interest.
Another preview .. here's a rough color of a couple of the Widowmakers .. Oleander the prospector and Nightshade the leader of the gang will have the finished full gang pic soon!
Yeah, I agree. this was from one of our newer artists who has more of an anime & comic book background, and it was colored quickly just as a quick & dirty preview. The doctor for the gang is even more animeish, looking more like a teenage nurse. So she needed a bit more work.
In the end though, these are just drawings for the overall theme and for the sculptors to base their work on, but the sculpts will be the same style as now they are, with a more realistic look. gonna be using the same sculptors as before
I'm hoping we can get the art all finalized and get the new campaign started around the end of next week. I'd like it to end just before Thanksgiving, so it doesn't dip into xmas shopping season
Necros: good catch on the anime nurse. We sure as hell wouldn't want to see that.
I agree though, it would break the setting. I'm getting ready to invest in this, I've done some careful management of funds and am in a great position to pledge. Any time you want. Any time now...
I don't mind a little anime, it is the guy's style after all. Just not the half naked girls kind of stuff. I want to keep the game PG 13 I want them to be attractive, but not strippers.
The real problem was she was too modern looking, so I did some google-fu to find some pics of old fashioned nurse's uniforms for him to base her outfit on.
We can probably do mounties when we get around to the horses And we'll do some mountain men too, I was thinking of a gang of hillbillies making moonshine at one point, but a lot of those ideas are getting mixed into the Clancy Gang that are typical outlaws. Trying to cover all the bases, but I want each gang to have their own theme. It's a fictional town (and world for that matter), but still based on historical stuff.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's all the girls This is still rough, and the nurse will be updated like I said along with some other tweaks across the board.

I think you've definitely hit upon the reason why it looks 'off' - too modern!
I think they overall look could be made a bit more 'Old West' on them, and yet still maintain the 'sexy edge' that these women might have, as clearly they're rebels in their time!
Yeah we'll see what the artist comes back with in the next day or 2.
I totally didn't catch Col. Mustard in there.. ha! Now that you mentioned it, it's going to be laser etched into my brain. Hmm.. it's not too late for a name change...
Also, just got the sculpt from Brother Vinni for the first bonus character, Kurt Wyatt.
Kurt was an infamous lawman from Coffin Rock who came to town with his friend Dr. Kilmer, looking for a fresh start.
Yep I was planning to do The Masked Rider and his indian sidekick as bonus figures if we get high enough to unlock plastic horses. Which will be pretty high, since we want to get all of the new gangs plus all the add-ons done first. If we don't make it though, I'll probably do a separate cavalary-specific campaign later next year that would include plastic horses and metal resculpts of each gang leader in a mounted version, plus other things like plastic stagecoach model kits. But we want to get all the gangs out there an established first.
Just would have to decide what I want to do first, the horses or the weird-west expansion.

I like all the new concepts, and my wife says she wants the ladies gang...but it would be good to get the stuff from the first kickstarter into peoples hands before getting too wrapped up in the next one.
I agree. At the very least I want to have the pledge manager all done for the old campaign so we can start getting people's orders processed. At this point we're still waiting for the boxes to get all printed so that's the only thing holding us up. But on the bright side, at least all of this stuff will be set up now and we'll have a system in place so that future releases go much smoother and maybe even on time
Biggest problem with timing the new one is the holidays. If we have it end in the middle of the shopping season, the campaign won't go well at all since none really do. That means we'd have to wait till long after the holidays and won't be able to get everything started till mid-January at least, and that would mean people wouldn't be getting their minis till like next fall.
But we were also toying with the idea of doing the new one as shorter campaign. Like 2-3 weeks instead of 30+ days.. since the middle 2 weeks of a campaign usually are pretty slow, and really most people that are going to back in the first place will know about it within the first week or so anyway, but for some reason they all wait till the end...
Actually that's the plan He'll be doing the Widowmakers, and I was going to have Bob Naismith do Wylde's rangers.. he already did the 3D work for the gatling gun. I have Ian Mountain on deck and will probably have him do the Secret Fist, and was going to have Pedro Ramos do the Flying Zarconis circus gang. Not sure about the other 2 starters, we might look for some additional sculptors to get everything done around the same time, or else have done as a "2nd wave" kind of thing. We also have a bunch of bonus figures to do too.
Have to check with the publisher (who is paying all the bills now) but we might even start sculpting a couple of the gangs before we even start the campaign, so we can hopefully get some greens to show off before it ends.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I also vote Weird West, honestly. Mounted figures are cool and all, especially if the horse are done well... but weird west is just too intriguing.
Sure, canadian mounties. hot on the trail of the infamous gold thieving outlaw Juneau Cornelius
I'm still working on the weird west stuff in the background. I'll probably be looking for some playtesters in another month or 2. But here's some of what I've been working on...
4 new professions:
Monster Hunters - +1 strength, +1 to hit supernatural stuff
Stalker - +1 quickness, starts the game hidden so they can "deep strike"
Preacher - +1 Stamina, -1 to target # for morale rolls if you're within 6 spaces / inches, protection from curses.
Engineer - +1 Intellect, gets special weapons and inventions, can fix and unjam broken artillery and other machines
Then the Skinwalkers will work like professions depending on their spirit animal. And they're supernatural so they get +1 to hit in melee, and +1 to their Melee combat attribute if it's at night.
Bear - +1 strength, can charge
Bat - +1 quickness, can fly
insect (mothman) - +1 stamina, can fly
wolf - +1 Intellect, pack hunter
And then there will be a lot of recently turned humans that are basically like henchmen, beasts like chupacabra or the cactus cat, critters like jackalopes. other special stuff like Bigfoot and/or yetis, jersey devil, hodag.. really any kind of folklore monster I can find I hope to add sooner or later. not just native american folklore, but all american. Trouble is most of what I can find is more like ghost stories and not actual critters. Also thinking a later expansion would include voodoo witches and zombies & wendigos.
For the basic game there will be 1 hero character for each profession, as tough as a gang leader. 1 monster spawn point for each hero played. Instead of setting up 2 gangs and fighting, you have the monsters coming out of their holes and the heroes start on any board edge. Probably going to have 9 12" tiles with 1" squares, and you can lay them out however you want. 1 hero activates, then the monsters get 2 actions.. they can spawn 2, spawn & activate, or activate 2. Heroes have to destroy the spawn points, and when they destroy the last one the big boss comes running in to kill everyone. I kind of want it to have the toughness kind of scale up sort of like the feel of playing through a level in a video game where things start small and gradually get bigger till you get to the big boss at the end. Skinwalkers would be kind of like mid-level bosses, as tough as professionals.
So I need something good and that fits the theme, based on getting +1 quickness and I'm thinking +1 defense in melee.
Hmm.. I thought a wendigo was basically just a cannibal that's kinda like a zombie just not undead. I read that somewhere.. So that's what I was gonna do for the expansion. undead mindless zombies as beasts, wendigo as henchmen, witches as professionals, and then a boss too which I haven't come up with.
I also want to do mission packs, that would come with maybe 2 new board tiles for special areas, and a bunch of new critters & beasts. Enough that you could also use them as a monster gang for the skirmish game
Trying to do it where it's the same game with 2 modes of play, I guess kind of like Dust Tactics & Warfare. But the skirmish game will stay mostly historical or realistic with metal figures, the board game will be the weird west and mostly plastic. That's the plan anyway
I always thought of Wendigo more of a force, greater than the humans who would be obsessed or possessed by it. Maybe I was more influenced by other descriptions that make it seem bigger and more malevolent... more of a primal beast itself. It could be taken many ways, so focusing on the more human forms of it would work great in the way you've described, I think.
I like the varieties of games idea. And I can't wait to see the weird west aspects.
Happy to vote for the Wendigo to be more of a leader, as Gym says, more of a force/curse that possesses people and the only way you can get rid of it is to pass it onto another person and die yourself.
Not to say you can't have Wendigo pups or something as feral zombie like minions as long as you justify it in the fluff. We are talking about a cryptid so it isnt like we have any hard facts about them.
Those are some good ideas. There will be a few different types of monsters. Critters are wimpy things with 1 for stats, but they attack as a group and add their attack dice together, so a pack of 4 jackalopes will make 1 attack with a melee combat of 4.
Then there's beasts that are 25xp dog-sized monsters like chupacabras. Fiends are henchmen types with 50xp. Monsters are 75xp professional level things, and then the boss is as tough as a gang leader.
Also toying with the idea of having large monsters that go over 100xp and attributes can be higher than 6, but those would be really nasty and unique things. When we were first starting out planning it as a western-fantasy setting we were going to have a "gunslinger sorcerer riding a dragon" as the final boss. But plans changed
What the basic storyline is going to be now is the final boss is like an ancient evil spirit/demon thing that wants to end civilization and make the world all wild. He's an ultimate beast who controls other monsters and animals, and he can take many forms. He'll find himself a settlement he doesn't like, and then start possessing the people and turning them into were-things. Eventually the place ends up a ghost town with everyone turned or moved away. I was going to name him Croatoan to and reference the Roanoke story.
For the Wendigo.. I could do that as the final boss in the zombie expansion. He'd be like Croatoan, only he wants to make the world undead
I know it is because I ran into the term/monster first in an old issue of The Inceredible Hulk, but this is what I first thought of when I heard "Wendigo":
This one is pretty cool too though:
And for more 'monsters', you might what to check out various "Cryptozoology" web sites, like this one:
Most tales mention that the Windigo's host becomes a kind of ogre, or ugly giant that grows with every victim that he eats
That could be an interesting mechanic to introduce. Maybe, if he kills a member of the gang, he regenerates? Maybe he gains stat bonuses if he eats someone/something? Maybe both (if he doesn't need to regenerate, he gets the stats... or the controller chooses)?
Hmm.. so if a Wendigo is more ogrely then, I would use them for the main boxed game and not the zombie expansion. Or if they don't go in the main set, they could go in a monster pack. Hoping to release a bunch of themed packs that will have 1 or 2 heroes and then a few different monsters.
I was working out a mechanic for skinwalkers at first called Bloodlust, where every time they get a kill they gain 1 HP, not just regenerate. Seemed like it would be too powerful for them though since there will be a lot of skinwalker models. Maybe that would be better for something more rare like a wendigo.
Once the new campaign is done we're going to use the profit from that to fund the artwork and preliminary sculpts for the boxed game. It'll probably get it's own new kickstarter some time next summer. We're going to need to get a working prototype done first though to show off before we can do a campaign for it.
I always thought of a wendigo as a werewolf kind of thing too, but some of the lore I started reading was saying they're men who became cannibals and zombie-like. I guess people just make this stuff up off the top of their head
We're going to make the pledge levels easier this time, just each starter is $30 like before and you can add on other things that you want. I won't have different levels including buildings, that made things real confusing on our end. We'll have a bundle of GameCraft buildings and a bundle of BattleFlag buildings, I think $60 each. Also, BF is going to do a special contest for one of their new kits and give it away to one lucky backer
For add-ons we'll also have the colt 45 dice, battlefoam bags and possibly some army painter paints. I'll probably have the gatling gun as an extra add on item too, that will normally only come in the Wylde's Rangers set.
Roland Deschain - 8 fingers, missing the trigger and middle finger on his right hand w/ 1 Sandlewood Revolver .45 cal
Eddie Dean - With Sandlewood Revolver .45 cal
Susannah - with wheelchair and plates as weapons
Jake & Oy - with revolver and pet bumblebee
Name them something like below
Roland of Blackwater
Eddie Naed
Susy Walker
Jack & Bo
I'm not too familiar with the Dark Tower. But I could see possibly adding some of their characters some day. I read the first 2 books way back when they were brand new, but none of the others. Been a long time. I just don't have the spare time to read a book these days, but I've been thinking about checking out Audible since they keep taking about it on D6G
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh here's something else. So, the plan for the weird west game was to have 9 12" square tiles, with 1" squares grids on them, and each tile will be decorated to look like part of town with a building or 2, basically just showing the inside of the building and floor plan.
The game salute guys had the idea of doing a cloth matt kind of like Dreadfleet that would have the grid on it. The cloth would be screen printed I guess, and made to look like dirt and grass, and then I was thinking we'd do heavy high quality cardstock tiles to represent the building interiors, and you could arrange them however you like on the matt. I was thinking it might be cool if it was double sided, so one side has the grid and the other doesn't so you could use it as a skirmish gaming matt too.
So, what do you think would be more fun? a 3x3 cardstock tile board, or a 3x3 tablecloth?
Wait: Zombie expansion? Colour me even more ready to give you money.
I ran the math to print a 4' X 4' canvas roll-up map to use as a generic town table cover... even with my discount with the printer, it came up to 100$, so i am extremely curious to know how much each would retail for. Double sided would be awesome!
Zombies are a long ways off But yes, some day. 2014ish. If we can get the main boxed game done in time for next xmas.. Pretty much going from scratch so it's going to take a while. The KS for it wouldn't be till next summer and treated like a whole new game. The regular skirmish game will continue to be the more realistic hollywood historical setting, mostly all metal figs. Weird west will be a boxed game with add-on monster packs and campaign-themed expansions. But the rules will be mostly the same so you could easily play weird west skirmish or wild west board game, or mix your gangs and monsters together if you want.
We'll look into the price for the cloth vs the boards. The boards would have to be nice high quality stuff, like Dust Tactics quality at a minimum, so I think either way will be pricey. It'll be made in china to keep costs down, like everything else in the world.
Question about base size. I thought I remembered you going with the rounded lip 30mm bases for the skirmish game. If so then the metal skirmish figures wouldn't exactly fit on a grid with 1" squares, so will the skirmish game and board game use different base sizes, or am I remembering wrong and you went with the standard 25mm slotta base for the skirmish game?
I was thinking for the plastic figs in the boxed game, they would have a 23mm flat base, that will fit in the squares and also fit perfectly inside the lip on the 30mm bases if you would rather play with skirmish rules. But if you want to use your skirmish models, the rule would be to just try and center your model over the space. Or, we could make the spaces 1.5", but then the distances and stuff would have do change.. like 6" = 6 1" spaces or 4 1.5" spaces. I wanted to make it easy for people to swap models between games with as little math as possible
yep that was the plan I measured and the inside lip area is 23mm or just a sliver bigger so they should fit in perfectly. But for the lazy, just using the plain 23mm in skirmish will also be allowed. I have a rule now where 25mm 40k sized bases are ok too, so another 2mm smaller won't really be a big deal.
Not sure how we'll do the 23mm bases though. maybe they can be part of the model itself so people don't need to glue. Since it's basically a board game we have to keep things simpler. Most of the smaller critters and monsters will probably be 1 piece sculpts so we can fit more on a sprue. The heroes and tough monsters will probably be multi piece but they'll have to snap together easily. Might steal Zombicide's idea and have each hero be a different color plastic if we can do that. Gotta find a happy middleground to make it easy for board gamers to set up & play, but also have lots of detail and cool poses for people that are into the minis.
Remember base depth. It's awesome that you're thinking about the mini-gamers with the way you're doing bases but, if the tops of the mini bases don't line up flush with the tops of the round lipped bases, there will be those who... vocalize their displeasure. : )
Nah, all Necros needs to do is just make his own custom bases for converting the boardgame pieces to the skirmish game. Then it would be in his benefit to make the boardgame pieces incompatible with the standard plastic round-lipped bases. Problem solved.
yeah I wouldn't want it to be too thick. Though I've seen some base inserts that are taller than the lip and still look good when they're all painted and flocked good. We could probably taper it, where it's slightly rounded and thicker in the middle for support, but thin at the ends.
Probably early next year we'll start looking for some 3D sculptors that have a lot of model kit experience and keep the traditional sculptors for the metal figures. lots of folks can make great looking 3D models, but we're going to need someone who's had experience with plastic models.. like laying out the sprues properly and stuff like that.
Necros, a quick word about the gridless tablecloth...
Wyrd Miniatures has 3x3 vinyl mats for convention tournaments that have their Terraclips bases on them (so they can just use Terraclips for terrain instead of terrain and the board.
They're about 50 bucks a mat, and aren't very cost effective (as of yet). You may want to see about getting into contact with them, they might be able to help you out.
I'm definitely in the gridless side of the market, but if you do go with grids, make them a smidge less than 1 inch squares so people can't pre-measure, or count out the squares during the game.
Well, in BWG people are allowed to premeasure anything, anytime, anywhere so the idea behind the grid was to make it so you don't have to measure.. your gun shoots 10", then that's 10 spaces.
I was thinking if we could do a double-sided cloth matt, it would maybe just be dyed in brown & green splotches, kind of basic, but then 1 side would just have the grid screen printed on it. So for the cloth-board game you can use the grid, and you can flip it over to use for a skirmish game cloth/matt as well.
We were thinking about Terraclips as well, we might approach World Works about that after we finally get the game released. I personally like the laser cut wood buildings, but they would be too expensive to mass produce, but a kit with a bunch of different clip together buildings would be cool.
Here's the concept are for the Tranquility Crew you can click it to enlarge...
From left to right.. Captain Nathan Reinholt, Adam James, Reverend Sheppard, Doc Simon and Julie the Ship's Mechanic
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh also .. we're not 100% sold on this one.. some elements are there, but others aren't. Do you guys think they represent the Firefly characters good? Or should we have one of our other artists give it a try too? Even if we didn't use these in the end, we could still easily use the art for other figs too. I think I like Mal & Book the best, the others are kinda tougher to tell who they are.
Doc Simon could look a bit more prim and proper, he was always a bit retentive on the show. And I think Adam James could be made to wear a knit hat, maybe? Also, Julie had curly hair, if I remember, or curling hair. I concur with you on Mal and Book, though.
Yeah, I wanted Simon to be very well dressed like he doesn't fit in at all. Kaylee just doesn't really match and Jayne .. well if he had a goatee I guess it would be better. Either way though, it looks like oure budget for art is topped out now after all so this is going to have to be it. Not that big of a deal for me though, I'll see what everyone thinks and we could always have the artist do some tweaks and also give the sculptor more direction on how to make them look. I like the art in general, just think he missed the mark a bit. But then maybe that's a good thing? We can't really copy everything exactly so maybe just some hints are all we need?
Not sold. I think fans want to see models that really evoke the original source material. In and of itself, it's not a bad looking gang, but if going for a not-Firefly gang, then it misses the mark.
Yeah, I agree. I think what we're probably going to do now is change it around and have Notmal and Notbook be bonus characters to unlock, and we'll keep the other 3 guys to use for another gang's 3-man support pack. Later on when we have the time and budget we'll have another artist do the other 3 characters and make it a full starter set. This also means we'd just have 5 new gangs for the campaign instead of 6, but more support packs and solo characters to unlock sooner, which might actually be better in the long run anyway.. more variety.
Jayne's Hat is probably the one sure fire way to make the Tranquility crew be "instantly" recognizable as said crew...
The other thing might be to give Captain Nathan a long brown coat... but then again... the art would look TOO much like Mal at that point...
Also, what is wrong with Simon's standard dress? He already looks like he belongs in the Wild West (white shirt, black vest, pants, and shoes, with the black arm cuffs). Give him a bow tie though...
Wasn't sure how to do the knitted cap for Jayne.. it's not very "western" .. maybe we could do it as some kind of eskimo hat with the ear flaps? Or a [see forum posting rules] skin cap with ear flaps? His mom could have skinned the [see forum posting rules] first and everything.
For now we decided we'll keep the artwork as is as concept art and we'll look at redoing them down the road before we get them sculpted. We don't have time to redo them right now, we're hoping to launch the campaign on friday or if not on monday.
Also concerning the old campaign, it turns out I made the shipping details too complex for the campaign manager to handle So, Game Salute is just going to fill everyone's orders manually based on the original survey. They're pretty much going to be taking over my KS account and finishing the campaign from now on.
Oh... no it wasn't beaver, it was a 4 letter word that begins with c, and also has 2 o's and an n in it. I guess I shouldn't have left off the ra for racoon
So yeah, something like the kid's hat, but with little ear flaps though I could always just give the sculptor the pic of the kid and just tell him to add a goatee
Got the final pics for the 4 main new gangs Here they are, it's super thin and tiny but you can click it for the full version, you'll have to scroll to see them all. It's a wrapping panoramic image that we'll be using to rotate 360 degrees for the video.
They started out as just a regular gang based mostly on the HBO show Carivalle, but as I started developing them more things got changed around more and I decided I wanted to have every henchman be a clown The professionals will all be like the main attraction types. Here's their official description
The greatest show this side of the Mississippi! Moving from town to town across the western states and territories, the Flying Zarconis circus comes to bring joy to the hearts of boys and girls, and piles of gold to their own pockets. A haven for people of freakish talent, many of whom are criminals with no other safe haven, the circus takes care of their own, and welcomes all who don't "belong" elsewhere.
The ringmaster, Mr. Zarconi, is a small man with a lot of love for his fellow carnies. A showman, and pickpocket you'll never see coming, unless you look down. Esposito, The Bladesman, is incredibly skilled with any sort of blade, as his name would suggest. His assistant is Maura, the beautiful, but bearded lady who is also a crack shot with her twin silver plated pistols. Close behind as always are the clowns, Mr. Snuggies and Twinklenose, who are often given the dirtiest, and most violent jobs.
Really nice wrap around pic. The Ladies gang will interest me most of the four, but no surprises there.
If the sculpts are anything like the pics I'll be very happy.
I showed the sculpt for Kurt Wyatt already, but here is his concept art, along with 2 other hired guns we’ll be adding to the Kickstarter. Kurt’s best friend Dr. Kilmer along with the infamous bounty hunter Wayne Duke.
Necros wrote: Hmm..
As silly as it may sound...
If you're doing the "Weird West" thing, I hope you take a peek at the show "Supernatural". There are definitely a few episodes which would be perfect for you to get some inspiration from. You mentioned the Wendigo--season 1 episode 2 "Wendigo" is a good one for ya there.
There's also season 3 episode 15 "Time is on My Side" that would be a good one for your "Weird West" bit. It's essentially a take on the whole "Snake Oil Salesman" motif and the Elixir of Life myths.
The Weird West bit is something I'd love to help with the brainstorming on, if you'd let me!
Actually, it's kind of evolved into Wild West Supernatural Although I won't be getting to much into the whole angels & demons stuff. Maybe some day, but to begin with I want to stick with folklore monsters. Jensen & JareD Manchester will be 2 of the bonus monster hunters in the game
