Greetings!
I finally decided to pop my head out of the rabbit hole and share my thoughts with the venerable Dakka community. Some of you might already know me and be familiar with Spiky Rat Pack, the blog where me and my good friend okkiW regularly post scribblings regarding arts, craftmanship, miniature hobby and scene around it. But those of you who don't know us (which I'm sure are plenty), here's a short introduction...
We, Spiky Rat Pack, are two enthustiastic hobbyist who like to share their creative sides with the rest of the scene. We love to shape the grim universe the way we see it - sketching, mooding, writing, painting, sculpting... whatever style we find to be suitable way to bring form for our visions. In the past we've done couple of joint-projects, okkiW sculpting and me painting. Our first project done together was Rogan Rygaard, Chaos Dwarf of Tzeentch, which basically was the start of the Spiky Rat Pack. From the perspective of our hobby, I might say that we've grown up a lot during these couple of years, looking for new ways to improve our skills and widen our creative horizons...
But enough of the jargon! Our current project, operation Punk Moth, is about creating a perfect experience of INQ28 game. The project is divided in to four stages: creating playable, personally designed INQ28 gangs ( the egg), building perfect gaming board ( the caterpillar), making interesting and detailed scenario ( the pupation) and finally, having a great time playing a game of INQ28 ( the moth).
My part of the project started about six months ago when returning from my trip to UK Gamesday 2011. My mind full of inspiration like cup filled to the brim, I started forming up the gang of rogues by sketching and painting them on pieces of paper. My plan was then to create miniature version from each one of them and finally paint all of them in blend of unique and coherent style.
Here's the first two members of the retinue, Mutie Kul (with his cyber-mastiff Skullhopperre wriggling next to him) and The Rifleman...
Mutie Kul
The Rifleman
If you're interested in knowing more about these fellows, please pay a visit in our blog Spiky Rat Pack. I'm currently working on the third member, Job a.k.a Old Man, whose steps I'll be sharing with you in the near future, just need to get couple of pieces together before moving to the next phase of modding and sculpting.
In the meanwhile, please feel free to give feedback from my process and share your thoughts.

Found my way here thanks to Jackanory. And well, I'm speechless, luckily I only have to type... You're obviously a gifted painter, the conversion-work is good too, but that's not what makes this stand out so much. It's the perfect harmony between inventive concept, frugal conversion and flawless color palette, that makes this simply sublime!
I like to think I'm badass (and I am ), but this is a book of seven seals to me. The unique style you achieve with seeming simplicity is just beyond my grasp. Reminds me of John Blanche, Jakob Rune Nielsen and other idols.

Neil, your amazing and crazy detailed studies at Opus Maius have had great deal to do with the Punk Moth operation. I basically got an idea for module based gaming board from your Tor Gilead construction. What's up with that project, by the way?
Baiyuan wrote:I like to think I'm badass (and I am ), but this is a book of seven seals to me. The unique style you achieve with seeming simplicity is just beyond my grasp. Reminds me of John Blanche, Jakob Rune Nielsen and other idols.
I met Mr. Blanche on my visit to Nottingham last summer. I had a priviledge to sit down with John and exchange some thoughts with him while studying some of his latest miniatures at close range. Needless to say, that moment changed the way of my creative thinking forever...
JRN's work has always fascinated me. The way he masters the hobby is simply spectacular, very inspirational. I'm a keen fan of him and would really want to meet him in live and exchange some visions with him.

Any chance of a walkthrough of your painting techniques for us mere mortals? :p

Incredible stuff! Your models are amazing - the paint scheme is understated yet technically brilliant, and the modelling is beautiful, especially the rifleman. It's been said before, but your art-work in particular has serious overtones of Blanche, with it's own uniqueness as well.
I'm really excited about this project - can't wait to see where you go next! Thanks a lot to Jackanory for the link - you should look at his blog if you have a chance, lots of inspiring stuff there too!

Judging from your Spiky Rat Pack blog this thread is going to be more than interesting. Will your partner also join you here at Dakka?
As people said, the execution is flawless but I somehow like the proportions of concepts more than of the resulting minis.
Great work anyway! And welcome!

Jubear, smiler, Yodhrin, Scarper and storag, big thanks for your attention and comments!
Yodhrin wrote:Any chance of a walkthrough of your painting techniques for us mere mortals? :p
I used lots of different techniques while painting these two fellas; acrylics, inks, washes, varnishes etc. My primary aim was to restrict the palette and stick on warm tones... I used gray primer. Skin was painted with pale Elf Flesh + acrylic white and washed with brownish wash. I then sharpend some details with white and brown ink.
Faces always get an extra attention in my projects. Wrinkles, moles, impurities of skin and reflections in eyes are the factors that have great deal to do with the personality of my creation.
Reds are first painted in dirty orangish red, washed with brown inks and washes and finally given some highlighting by adding bone white to the main colour. The same technique was pretty much used in all places and I just fine tuned the amount of washes and inks to give varying effect to the end result.
Scarper wrote:Thanks a lot to Jackanory for the link - you should look at his blog if you have a chance, lots of inspiring stuff there too!

The postman didn't bring me any bits on Friday for the Old Man so he remains on his current (early) stage. To be frank, I couldn't have spared any time for the hobby this weekend even if I had wanted to.
This mysterious Old Man that I've been referring to is Inquisitor Cassar's witty minded counselor. His knowledge of the old technology has prooved him invaluable aid in many of Cassar's inglorious missions...
Job a.k.a the Old Man
Job hoovers on an anti-gravity chasis that has replaced his whole lower crippled body. The anti-grav chasis makes dim humming sound with casual crackling arcs down to ground. It lets Job to ignore harsh ruined terrain but restricts his rate of speed to fast walking.

Cool stuff, I've admired that Chaos Dwarf before and I particularly like Skullhopperre who is quite cute. Your illustrations remind me of Mervyn Peake, I could easily picture the Old Man in a decrepit, creaky, 40k castle full of bizarre gothic individuals.

To be honest, I had never heard of Mervyn Peake before I Googled him today Maybe I've heard of him but didn't know to put face for a name... His art actually does have some similarities to mine, grotesque faces etc. Thanks for the hint

It'll be very interesting for us to try our best on terrain building too We've already planned to make the terrain very low in hue, giving very tepid background for our characters.

Weehaa! Got miself some bits today for Old Man, Cairn Wraith to be exact. I couldn't wait but tear the blister open and start to model the man with some bits and blue tack. Here's a raw "3D sketch" so far...
If you compare Job to his drawn version, you can obviously see some differences right away; Skull is kept in his left hand instead of right, his back is much more bent etc. But you can still feel his cruel smile while he is admiring his latest finding, wondering what would be the perfect price for such a beauty...
The thing is, I try to find perfect balance between the miniature and the drawing, giving space for creativity while modelling and painting. If I'd try to make an exact model from the drawing I'd loose my mind!
Any ideas for the anti-gravity chasis, how to mod it even more wicked?

I was really thinking of his writing, Gormenghast (one of my favourite books) is full of oddball characters: the grotesque, the gothic, the bizarre and the macabre.
Job is looking good so far, I really, really like the hair and nose. Something about the hair on your figures moves the models from being standard Warhammer figures to being something else entirely.

Hooyah! Got a nice painting spree and finished Old Man in record time. Here's some shots of him...
Some more angles and background jabadaba can be found at Spiky Rat Pack, if you happen to be interested...
For Old Man's cape I used sponge techinque JRN told about in his blog Miniatextures. This technique is also famous for those who like to make weathering effects for armours and other metals. Sponge's randomness makes it perfect tool to make imperfect texture for different surfaces. In this case I was looking for certain effect for the cloth, something that would look like maggot and moth eaten sack with oil stains and dirt. Hope I made it there.

Sorry Bruticus, (almost) missed your question there! I don't have an airbrush, so zenithal highlighting/shading is out of question in my case. Yes, I do use lots of washes and inks to make glazes. If you're interested in learning more about grimy and naturalistic (=ugly) technique, may I recommend you to check out Steve Buddle's blog Spyglass Asylum. His blog is updated very seldom these days after he went to work for GW, but you can still browse to his ponderings regarding Dirty Painting and several washing techniques, which you might find both inspiring and insteresting to learn more about...

So you guys play INQ28 campaigns together? What rules are you using? Besides...what warbands are there in your group?
56254
Post by: izeColt
Hi Malika2! We're currently planning our first game of INQ28 to be played this Fall, at the earliest. Punk Moth is pretty long term project due the fact that we'll be doing all the stuff - minis, terrain, scenario etc. - from the scratch.
The game will be played using Inquisitor rules which are adapted to work in 28mm scale, hence the abbreviation INQ28(mm). We both will be having teams that include four key members + extras (Cyber Mastifs, Servo Skulls etc.). It will be very narrative game for us, being more like roleplaying each character than aiming to win the game. We will be creating a story that is lead forward mainly by character chemistry rather than tactics and random factors.

Wonderful group shot Ize, so very full of menace and the macabre.. I agree that you should check out Ghormenghast , I think remember reading in ratspike years ago that Ian Miller had also been inspired by Mr Peake could be wrong though ..
I found an artist who;s work reminds me of Ian millers the other day and thought you would like his work also
Albin Brunovsky , Put a collection of his work in my inspiration gimme bar on opus
https://gimmebar.com/view/4fbbac9aaac422c853000002/big
great to see beneath the old mans dirty cloak , ... that just sounds wrong ;-)

Cheers Neil! Ghormenghast has been added to my "must read" list, with very high priority (there's plenty of books in that list, slow reader you see). Thank you for another recommendation.
That Albin Brunovsky's stuff is mad! Nice find indeed. For some reason I got vibes not only from Ian Miller's work, but also from Roger Dean's. Don't know where that came from since Dean's style is very, very different from Brunovsky's, but I feel that there is some deeper connection between them... Loneliness? Anguish? Reaching the extreme limits for something beyond..?
Thank god Old Man's lower part is only a floating anti-gravity chasis ;D

We're aiming to build our gaming board to resemble Imperial gothic industrial district that has seen some serious fighting at some point. There will be ruins and pits everywhere, deep behind frontlines. Everything will be covered by dust and sand, rust and corrosion has eaten most of the metals.

Operation Punk Moth keeps thickening. Mikko just finished skulpting yet another masterpiece for his retinue, the Twinz. I, in the other hand, haven't finished anything really new lately, though I made a drawing about Skullhopperre...
Inquisitorial Archives: Study of Skullhopperre II
+ Skullhopperre +
Those of you who are wondering what the hell is this, please let me introduce to you, Skullhopperre (Bragenpanne Den Ongewinne) - or graedig basterd like Mutie Kul would call it. Skullhopperre is Mutie Kul's Cybermastif, pet, blood hound, which Kul uses for tracking enemies and draw their fire at.
Skullhopperre was born in the middle of kitbashing frenziness, on the spur of the moment. I didn't plan to do it, it just came to life. I had some Tyranid bits lying around and thought "I really need to either use these for something or else throw them away". So I took a knife, cut this little critter's 'ead off and put a human skull in its place - vóila!

I'm still not sure what head I will start to work with in Cassar's case, bought like a dozen different face that I will need to choose from. I guess I'll have to work it out somehow...

I can hardly wait, izeColt! If I could name three things that you absolutely need to bring over from the drawing, it would be these:
- the hair
- the collar
- the slender silhouette. I love how thin he is in the drawing - almost freakishly so. But he looks lean and dangerous, like a wasp
Oh, and one last thing: It'll probably nearly impossible to pull that off, but try to capture that look in his eyes in the model! He really looks like someone who has seen too much and gone too far...
Phew, I guess you can tell i'm really looking forward to this one, huh?

Right, I got my bits for the Inquisitor Cassar from the UK last week, just in time before weekend. I managed to start building Cassar's body with pretty nice pace, here's the result so far...
Inquisitor Marius Cassar
I'm not sure if I'll arm his left hand with a sword or a gun. What do you think?
KrautScientist wrote:If I could name three things that you absolutely need to bring over from the drawing, it would be these:

Two out of three ain't bad, don't you think? I decided to give Cassar a chest plate so he'd be more protected when on the field. That's one the reasons I had to abandon his slender silhouette along with the fact that his leather coat became a bit thicker than I thought it'd be. Also, his shoulder mounted bolt pistol has quite a mechanic build on his back so he had to be a bit more fit to be able to carry the thing around. These kind of things just pop out when you start to kit-bashing, you know...

The chainsword looks good but is a bit bulky, I really like his rapier one in the drawing. The laspistol doesn't do it for me, it seems a bit unbalanced with two large pistols on one side of the figure. Maybe a smaller pistol would work.

If you go slim sword or rapier, then use the sword.
The double pistol doesnt really flow imo.

Thanks Vitruvian XVII for your opinion and your praising words. To be frank, J.B. is really on a level of his own, unreachable. We mere mortals can only pitfully imitate what he's doing. But it warms my heart to hear that someone actually thinks that my style is very similar to his, so thank you, yet again...
It looks like I'll be putting a sword in Cassar's left hand. Power rapier it is, as chainsaw version looks a bit too crude in this case. He'll be handling a laspistol in his right hand.
So there we go. I'll post some more WIPs when I've done with the hands...

I agree with Bruticus concerning the sword. A Rapier of some kind would be fantastic. You know, maybe even a Rapier with some kind of Pistol integrated into its hilt? He seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't be above pulling of a dirty trick like that

I promise you won't recognize it after the paintjob There will be mad gloss in his eyes too...

Absolutely magical characters! They are the perfect blend of fantasy and sci-fi (Blanche-ness?). But there's enough personal touch in the models (especially the Old Man) to make them incredibly unique. I cannot wait to see your next updates.

The face on your Inquisitor looks good. You're off to a fantastic start.
The sword is too chunky....perhaps a Striking Scorpion chainsword? Or Rogue Trader era eldar chainsword if my memory serves me correctly...was on a plastic sprue me thinks.
Another option could be the rapier from the baneblade commander.
Not a fan of the pommel on the pistol.
So if you can get the pistol in the same pose as the drawing I would try that. But If you cannot find a thinner chainsword then I suggest keeping the sword in his hand.
I also think that the shoulder pistol could do with lowering slightly.
Really exciting to see how he comes along.

Post by: KrautScientist
That sword PDH posted would be a very nice fit in my opinion!
I just remembered three different options:
1.) The Grey Knights in power armour come with lots of Falchion-type swords. They look rather nice when used on an Inquisitor model (I used on on my Assassin conversion).
2.) The Cadian Command Squad has a nice and thin power sword that comes attached to a bionic arm. Ditch the arm, and you have a very nice sword (you can see the bit on my Magos Explorator).
3.) The WFB Empire Knights have a sword arm for their champion. The arm is heavily armoured, but the sword is pretty nice.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's a picture of the swords, btw:
The one on the left is the Empire Knights sword, the one on the right is a GK falchion (they are available for left and right hands, although you would probably have to ditch the hand).
The one in the middle is yet another option: A sword from the plastic WFB Wight King

Cheers fellas for your comments!
@PDH and KrautScientist: Thank you for recommending options for the sword guys. That Baneblade commander's sword is pretty much the kind I've been thinking of using. I'm pretty sure there's something similar in Cadian Command Group sprues...
If Cassar had carried a daemonic weapon, it'd definately be the Wight King's sword!
Oh yeah, I also ripped off the shoulder pistol, made the stem a bit shorter and re-glued it. Looks much, much better now. Thanks PDH for the hint! Sometimes you just become a bit blind for flaws like these when you refine your model too intensively. Good to have a community like this to point out your mistakes
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Here's the one that comes with the Cadian Command squad, in any case:
It's on the guy with the standard. That's the only sword in the kit.
Should you need any of the three swords in the picture I posted, let me know. I'd be glad to help you out.

Yes, one of the old Eldar chainswords would really fit, I think, be it an old Striking Scorpion one, or one from a weapon sprue. I actually think a chainsword fits the image better than a rapier, but perhaps that's because the original artwork has that splattered blood feel to it.

I agree with PDH about the eldar chainsword, I was checking my bits for suitable swords:
From left to right: Kalamandras' sword, old chaos chainsword (if you filed the back straight), old metal space marine chainsword, Eldar chainsword and the basic Guard chainsword. Unfortunately I used my favourites on this guy - two Ragnar Blackmane chainswords. Karandras' is cool but probably too huge. I think the standard eldar one would look pretty cool though, it was the first one I thought of when I saw the illustration. You can have mine if that helps.

Hi folks!
Just managed to apply the last pieces of greenstuff to Cassar this evening and thought to upload some shots before the sunrise - and believe me or not, it rises around 3 a.m. at this time of year in Finland
I'm pretty pleased by how I've been improving my greentuffin' skills lately. I was able to work out some very fine details this time, thanks to some of my new sculpting tools. The pin came in hand when I was doing the lace cuffs that KrautScientist lured me to do. They don't look like much at this stage, but after they get some paint and freehanding, I guess they'll look much more like lace cuffs...
Tomorrow it's time for some priming!

I can't stress this enough, KrautScientist, but your work has also had a major impact on my side of the Punk Moth project. It's pure magic what you've done with your Inquisitor posse, not to mention the amazing fluff! Consider me a fan

I've heard couple of pretty interesting stories so far, but I'm sure Mikko has couple of tricks in his sleeves that he'll use to blow up the pot. Seriously, I can't wait to see his stage one to be ready.
Mikko's vigor enthusiasm has given a lot of strenght for me to carry on abd finish what I've started doing. It hasn't been an exception in this case either...

All the bits used in these models are from the range of Games Workshop. It is my admiration to Blanche's art that has worked as a basis for my creativity. Consider me humbled then, that I have managed to inspire someone who is much more of an artist than me
I am also really looking forward to the "Twinz". And you are right: If that's one of the henchmen, what on earth will the Inquisitor look like?
Oh, and I totally second PDH's suggestion to add more retinue members, if only to see more conversion goodness from you You seem to have quite a lot of archetypes covered, but what about a Mechanicus Priest? Or an arco-flagellant? Some kind of heavy Crusader-type would also be interesting (and a great pretext for adding yet more gothic madness).

Hi folks!
Long time no type. Punk Moth project is still alive and kicking, trust me! There's been some setbacks on the way, but other than that, almost everything else has been going like planned. Almost.
I thought that I finished my mob when I had Inquisitor Cassar painted. Well, it looks like I was wrong. Some time ago I found myself sifting through the last month's White Dwarf and paused for a good moment when John Blanche's always wonderful Blanchitsu popped in to my sight. In his article John introduced some of the finest conversion made out of Games Workshop's infamous chubby Nurgle Chaos Champion.
You know what? I simply couldn't resist the temptation of making one of my own to fill the ranks of Inquisitor Cassar's entourage. So I took my pencils and started sketching the next character for the Punk Moth scenario...
Hagard & The Færwyrd
Hagard is yet another henchman for Inquisitor Cassar's retinue. Hagard fought his brutal wars on the same savage planet that Mutie Kul did his biddings. Hagard's grotesque and cruel heavy machinegun Færwyrd (inspired by MG-42) sows terror amongst his foes, ripping them to pieces with high caliber rounds and fast fire rate. Hagard wields the gun with an agile, lightly moving pneumatic arm that is much longer and stronger than a normal limb. The arm is integrated to the gun's barrel and it is like the gun and the arm are one piece.
This side quest disturbed my Caterpillar plans a bit. If you remember, the Caterpillar was the phase where we are supposed to be doing terrain for the Spiky Rat Pack's first INQ28 game. The terrain is well on its way, but there still hell-of-a-lot to do before we can even dream of playing a game on that board!
For the closure, here's a peek to my plans for the board so far...
Thanks for reading!

Welcome back!
The sketch looks fantastic (as always... ) - I can see the Nurgle Lord, but I love the disparate proportions on his body. I'm excited to see how you craft it - every single one of the models you've made has been a great transition from artwork to actual model.
Also looking forward to the terrain. Are you going to have any Necro-inspired multi-tier buildings? I suppose it depends on your scenarios, but I'm liking the preview so far.

Cheers guys!
Remi, the terrain will be more like playable diorama with an interesting layout and a natural feel rather than "mindless" labyrinth of miscellaneus walls and objects. It has prooved to be quite challenging to make the terrain manouverable when approaching the design process this way though. I decided to split the board in half so that I could design the interior of the Basilica to represent more like real building. This way we'll be able to do photoshooting of the game from closer range and lower angle if/when the characters are moving inside the building's ruins.
Long story short(er), Necro-style multilevel terrain will be presented in very limited way, some catwalks and ruined roof-tops hear and there...

Back to business... I started modelling Hagard. Here's the outcome so far...
I still need to add bits here and there, and when I'm done with that, it's time for some greenstuffin'. Hagard will get hair on his head (but he'll be bald like in the drawing) and his shoulder guard will get more detailed and less like "out of the box" feel for it. I'm thinking of adding more layers and edge to it.
And then there's the pneumatic arm. It still needs some heavy modding before I'm satisfied by the looks of it. At the moment it stands out like a straight junk with pipes and cables, so I need to add some functional looking bits to it so that it would look more like it could actually be a working piece. Also, the connection between the arm and the gun is still pretty nonexistent and needs to be stressed.

Rawson wrote:What will you do with all the chaosy bits? I see the hanging guts are gone (good choice), but he still has a gaping belly, hooved feet, mark of nurgle, and such.
Belly will be hidden and smoothed with gs, hoofed feet will stay to give some edge to the legs and mark of Nurgle might be covered by a loin clothe as seen in the drawing. I've just cut some mass out of the chubby's body so far, so much more modding will still be done.
Yodhrin wrote:Do you mind if I save your artworks into my "Inspiration: Pillage for ideas at first opportunity" folder?
Please Yodhrin, do so! It's an honour to share inspiration and give that small boost to the fellow hobbyists to do their best. I don't know how'd I manage to do what I do if I hadn't leeched inspiration from the works of others...
In Hagard's case it was the first time I had a certain part in my mind that I wanted to use in my project; Nurgle Chaos Lord's body. In most cases I just draw and paint what comes in to my mind and when I'm done with it, I start to figure out what bits would work in which part. Of course I've done compromises here and there and the main focus has been in trying to keep the spirit of the miniature as close to the sketch as possible.

Post by: lone dirty dog
That makes sense however it still seems perfectly on track for the original design, watching your work evolve is really quite inspiring to say the least.
You mentioned you can not sell your talent but maybe your minis I have to ask any chance of selling me the way you did the judge wig haircut for Inquisitor Cassar
I would like a few of my characters with this hair style, so if you could give me a run through I would be very grateful, I also gather the collar was done in a similar way
56254
Post by: izeColt
Sure thing. Just roll a piece of greenstuff to thin bar and let it harden. When it is hard, cut it to small barrels and glue them on the head in set of three to four. Finally make the top of the hair from gs and done. Small ponytail on the back will top off the wig effect.
When doing the collar, I followed the instructions found from Jakob Rune Nielsen's Duchess Death documentation...

The head did give something to ponder, but I guess that the Chaos Marauder Horseman's head does the trick. I did cut some of his cheeks away to give a bit more slender look to it...

On with the work in process...
The fat bloke is well on his way to the painting stage. I'm almost done with the greenstuffing and just making some finishing touches before basing and priming...
There are couple of more shots from different angles in our blog Spiky Rat Pack, if you happen to be interested...
As you can see, I decided to add more layers to the shoulder guard to make it resemble a bit more like one shown in the drawing. Also, Hagard got some hair on the back of his head, which I tried to align so that it would look like the wind is moving it a bit...
A couple of purity seals on the shoulder guard give a feel of movement on the otherwise pretty stiff looking model.

So Hagard and the Færwyrd are now finished and ready to rumble. Withaout any longer speechess, here they are....
+ Hagard & The Færwyrd +
Some more shots and a short story can be found from our blog Spiky Rat Pack...
The result is very much ispired by the conversions made by John Blanche, PDH, JRN and Migsula. I believe I would have never started working on this thing if it had not been the awesome work these guys have done with their Chaos Nurgle Lords.
As usual, I chose to paint the skin very pale (or Nordic if I may say so). I used a lot of time to paint the skin as I wanted it to have the same kind of graphical effect that John Blanche has in his minis... Metals were paint to look like really worn and rusty. Rust then works pretty well with the reds of Hagard's pants and purity seals. Hagards eyes are pale white with a hint of red in them too, indicating that the guy might not have the best eye-sight for the job - but his soul is full of hatred and that is just enough for him to wield the infamous Færwyrd.
This time I also put some more effort for the actual photoshooting. The idea for the black reflecting surface came from Tammy of Tear's of Envy (cheers!). The black shiny surface gives a touch of class for the work. I also decided to add some flavour to the background by dropping a small dark box on the back. It brings a nice element of scale and also works as a mood bringer.

ishkatar wrote:Magnificent! I especially like the face and the skin tone.
May I ask, paints of which manufacturer do you use?
I use mainly Citadel paints and washes, but also have some of the acrylics in tubes (just add water, so to speak). I also use Winsor & Newton inks to boost the colours.

I've recently bought some Liquitex acrylic inks, which I intend to experiment with for filters/blendings.
Now you got me curious, what exactly do you mean with "boost the colours"?
Could you explain that and maybe give an example?

Genius. I don't say that often. This is brilliant. It's John Blanche in 3D. These are so creepy and disgusting that they evoke a truly visceral reaction. I actually feel nausea looking at them.
Amazing. Disturbing.

Thanks Two Spartan, Baiyuan and Xenocidal Maniac.
Baiyuan, W&N inks have rich tone in then, which makes them very vibrant.

Here's the radio silence killer....
+ Sergi the Slasher +
Sergi is a cunning personality, whose two-faced nature makes him a very untrusty henchman. But stealthy throatcutter as Sergi is, Inquisitor Cassar has seen much potential in this murderous character, keeping him in a leash of dept.

Thanks Neil! I've started to limit the colours that use in my projects to help find my style, so maybe that's one of the reasons why they are starting to look so cohesive. That and my lack of imagination in colours

Imo the limited palette is the most prominent appeal of your works. I haven't had the balls to go that reduced yet, but I absolutely adore it when others do it.

Fantastic. The head is especially characterful. It's so well painted it is hard to even recognise it as the standard flagellant head, it looks like some new, HD version. And the grimy armour looks great too. I think the big hand needs a story behind it though.

What an incredible blog. The transition from art (which is FANTASTIC) to model (also FANTASTIC) is a great sight to behold. You're an incredible talent.
Do you do commissions?

The model is art, you really create a new depth to models that I could only dream off.
It amazes me the amount of character you squeeze into your miniatures, it really is astounding .

Maybe it is the malicious presence of Cassar that starts to affect to the people around him, who knows

Howdy!
The Punk Moth project is still alive! The Caterpillar phase (building terrain for our scenario) has been laying on my workbench for a bit too long, gathering dust. I decided get this ball rolling again so I started building ruins, bunkers and garbage like a rabid squirrel, getting this project back on track.
While building the scenery I got some neat ideas how to spice up the terrain with little details, giving it some more depth to the surrounding that where Cassar and Pherion will have their confrontation. Here's the primed sector at the moment...
More insights to follow!

Oh thank the Maker!! I'm glad to see you're back in action!
The new building looks great - I love the cans and tires, even moreso than the Hydra flak cannon emplacement.
Question - in your first picture, you have that dirt-creep going up the crevice of the buttresses (next to the door) - what did you use for that? It looks really good.
Looking forward to more!

Wow this is one of the coolest Inq28 models I've ever seen, truly amazing.

I used Liquid Nails to make some rough shapes to the ground and walls - like wind blown dunes etc. Neil101, the master of terrain builiding, gave me the hint for this. Liquid Nails is easy to use and when it dries, it becoms hard and just a little bit flexible. When the stuff had dried, I added some PVA glue + 3 different kind of sand.

Awesome minis! Fantastic conversions and paintjobs all round
I love John Blanche's stuff and I can really see his influence in your work, the only thing I don't like about Blanche's miniatures is his paintwork, it's a little too 'inks & watercolours' for me, which I guess is because that appears to be his preferred 'canvas' medium, which I guess bleeds over to his mins. On the other hand, your minis have lovely crisp paintwork while still retaining that grittyness!

Thank you, Leigen_Zero! John Blanche's work has had a major influence on my style. That shines through without shame. The Caterpillar phase of the Punk Moth scenario is rolling on again. All the buildings are now primed and waiting for the painting phase. There's a lot of surface to cover so I need to plan the whole painting process with care...
Before assailing any of my undercoated structures with paint I decided to make a test piece with the colour scheme that I had thought to use in the Punk Moth scenario. My plan is to paint most of the surfaces with dirty and worn white and coat the trims of the walls with beutifully patinated copper. The ground will have the similar tone with the bases of our gangs.
I picked up one of the extra walls and had the test piece undercoated with a nice layer of dark brown paint that I had mixed with various paints. Anxious as I was, I had to speed up the drying process with a hair drier. My wife looked at me with a hint of an amusement in her eye...
When the undercoat was dry, I applied some water here and there with a paintbrush and sprinkled table salt over the wetted areas. When the water had dried off and there was only salt left, I went outside and gave the test piece a nice layer of white paint with an airbrush. Actually my white paint was so low-quality that I had to give it not just one but three thin layers before all the areas were white. This had a dramatic impact on the salt which decided to stick on the surface even though I soaked the testpiece under warm water for over a minute. I had to help it with the paintbrush and finally got the salt off.
Now the wall had a nice weathered surface that needed to be shaded. I gave the surface a thick layer of brown wash.
After the wash had dried, finished the effect with some minor details. Finally I painted the trim with bronze metallics and added some turquoise to make it look like patinated copper.
here's the finished test piece...

Damn buddy that looks bloody good. The yellowy white is very nice background, a bit different.
How are you going to soak the larger sections to get the salt off?
56254
Post by: izeColt
Cheers Peter! For removing the salt off from the bigger pieces I'll be using a sink shower attachment. After doing the test piece I figured that I needed to invest in better white paint, so I went and bought one. I tried it out and looks like I only need to make one thick layer to cover the brown paint and therefor the salt will get of much easier. The sink shower does ripp off some of the white paint but that's more than fine with me as it gives even more realistic weathered effect to the walls.

Thanks chaps!
Sorry for the lack of Dakka-attention. I have finally finished the Caterpillar phase of the Punk Moth project. Here follows a fist full of photos from the Punk Moth campaign scenery, in all its glory...
+ The Monastery +
Ever since I finished the scenery, I've been arranging all the pieces together on the gaming board with excitement, staging the set like a young lad building his first Lego city, looking for best balance in both gameplay-wise and appearance. The possibilities are endless...
This is a mock-up layout for a possible Punk Moth scenario, The Monastery. I'm pretty pleased how the set looks as a whole. There are some hue differences in the greys of the ground and the decayed walls, but I think that just gives them more lively look.
Here's some close-ups of the terrain...
The end of the Caterpillar phase means that we are free to continue to the next phase of our project - the Pupation. In this phase we will plan, organise and enrich our first game of INQ28 (which, by the way, has been under preparations for almost two years by now). This game will work as a stage for our two rival Inquisitors, Inquisitor Marius Cassar and Inquisitor Pherion of Mars. The hunt is about to begin...

Hang on have you not looked at your creations "You'd have to be a mad man to glue them separately " we have already established you are mad its just to what extent
You convert and construct great looking miniatures, you have an artistic flair when it comes to painting and now as a final blow to us mere mortals you produce stunning scenery, I hate you so much
