Dakka's very own Ouze has decided that we in the wargaming community could use a little more butt jokes in our Grimdark, and as such has come up with this pretty little thing he likes to call a Flying Assault Butt.
Project Goal I'm going to be creating Flying Assault Butts, a small resin model to be used with tabletop games.
In the Grimdarkmost far future, war has engulfed the galaxy. A plague has come from the furthest dimensions of the unknown, wiping out whole populations. The plague causes an unspeakable agony as the victim's butt takes on a life of it's own, tearing itself away to attack mindlessly. Perhaps it's some government science project gone awry. Perhaps it's, I don't know, magic or something.
What I do know is: The Butt Wars rage.
Here is a picture of the Flying Assault Butt with an idea of scale.
Risks and Challenges I'll be making these in my spare time, but am pretty well experienced with casting small projects like this. The only issues I expect to encounter are what Donald Rumsfeld once called the "unknown unknowns". That being said I should be able to make these no problem.
d-usa wrote: IQuick question though: If there are any alternate sculpts stretch goals, can you trade out some of the plain ones in a squad for special sculpts?
Of course. I don't believe I can update the original rewards to reflect that, however.

Great news!
I upped my pledge to the $30 level, looking forward to seeing the stretch goals
Are you partnering up with any terrain companies to make terrain and/or tiles as an add-on goal? Hover toilet terrain and gas station stall tiles seem like no brainers.
infinite_array wrote: I am uncomfortable with anything associating stretching with butts.
Nicely done.
Anyway - I have some ideas but no partnerships with anyone else yet. I'll keep you posted. I have some concepts to mock up but I want to go slow so I don't overextend myself - I saw an awful lot of kickstarters sort of get screwed by too much success.
Thank you again to everyone for making this incredibly inane, pedestrian dream - one I've held dear to my heart with great yearning and starry eyes; for about 3 days now - come to fruition.
There will be more to come, and all of it will be exactly like what you've already seen.
I'm glad you address the scale issue with the ruler right away. I've seen promising kickstarters like Thon felled by scale incompatibilities. I can safely say that I think your offering is to scale with all other daemonic flying butt minis that I've seen.
greenskin lynn wrote: so do you plan to do like the big kickstarters and work out some sort of tie-in with either kingdom death or penny-arcade
Oh I dunno, daemon wings and bare buttcheeks, the KD tie-in is inherent in the model.
As for PA and something/one which/who is just a gigantic ass, I'll refrain from commenting.

maybe crossover with deadzone then
flying plagued butts
enforced butts
marauding butts
rebel butts
strange robotic elf butts
short hairy butts
bam, tons of stretch goals right there
Just wanted to drop in to say I've backed the project for a full squad. Personally I'm hoping that we hit enough stretch goals I can craft a complete butt army. Will additional stretch goals be included for certain tiers and above or will we have to... Uhh... Dump.. more cash.
PredaKhaine wrote: You need to make a casualty one too. Maybe with a gammy wing.
Call it Butt-Hurt.
Jeez this is nearly as good as the butt pirate one (eyepatch) or butt buddies (two small ones on the same base). Not my ideas, someone else came up with those.
It has september under the pledges, but I don't know if that's accurate
edit: also, the butt pirate is great. But I don't think I can afford it along with the squad. I'll probably wait until the last day and see which of the stretch goals I love best if I go for any at all. Sad motyak

I asked earlier if we might be able to substitute stretch goal guys into the squad and it sounded like that might be possible. So when the survey goes out we might be able to pick 1 Pirate & 4 regular. I'm sure Ouze will clarify though.
porkuslime wrote: I looked at the kickstarter page.. but do not see this vital info...
When/what is the estimated delivery time on the project past completion of the kickstarter?
-P
It's a good question. As Moyak stated, it's in the reward levels - September. That's the latest possible date; assuming this says small and manageable I hope to have mailed out everything by the end of July (unofficially). I felt I needed to allow wiggle room in cause this gets out of hand to allow me to train up more people for casting. I've already got 4 people on hand to help me cast if need be but I don't think it will come to that. I've also kept the designs to be reasonably simple to cast, intentionally. I am very wary of overextending myself and have no desire to do so; I'd much rather have a tiny kickstarter with very limited rewards that does really well and on-time then one of those, like, 2 million dollar monsters where no one gets stuff for years. I can always do another kickstarter later. This one is more of a toe-in-the-waters project for a (substantially more tasteful product) I'd like to do but can't afford to.
Anyway, as pointed out we passed $350 so I've posted the first stretch goal: Captain Buttbeard, rogue butt-pirate. Here's a scale image:
Not trolling good sir, this is a product that is being offered, and by one of Dakka's own nonetheless
The fact that it is real is what makes this fething epic. My mind is totally blown away by such smart use of the system. Just... wow The author being a dakkanaut is an extra en awesomeness.
I was thinking that if the price point gets low enough, they'd be a great counts-as for Furies. People are always complaining they can't find a good model for them.

Agreed on the Nurgle Proxies, I would love (and I'm just wishlisting here) some that could feasibly fit onto a 40mm base so I have butt based Chaos Spawn

Well, GW furries are 5 for $30. Same price as 5 of these awesome guys.
So technically it's not any cheaper, but for the same price you can have a unique option they will leave your opponents breathless.
You need to get in touch with Romeo over at Battlefoam...get him to make a ButtWars Buttlefoam Bag to protect all of those Flying Assault Butts and the multitudes of stretch goals that are bound to get unlocked!

You need to make a WWII version. Just to be sure everyone knows what they're looking at, he can have a helmet and a gass mask.
When this project is nearing it's completion, and everyone's rushing to get in at the END, we need to refer to it as the Tush Push.

2.) I have to get in the shower and go to work, like, 10 minutes ago. But I checked stats on KS and it shows forums.somethingawful.com have been referring a lot of traffic (and 3 backers). Would someone be willing to find the thread that is obviously there? Since SA is totally NSFW I won't be anle to go digging myself until I get home. Again, Something Awful is totally not safe for work. It's also delightful.

Uh oh... I think you're about to get your gluteus completely maximus'd! You could end up with an invasion and have $100k in pledge and 1,000,000 arses to make!
Also, have you thought about their enemies yet? Some sort of sentient giant paddle... Or perhaps some sort of Alien who likes to abduct and is very fond of probes...
Does this mean that the mod(s) have taken a stance on Kickstarters being news and rumors?
Could we not have gotten a warning to stop with the butt jokes? No offense, but this is a little heavy handed for a thread that contains just as much if not more news than the latest GW Eldar thread...

Agreed. if a risque post gets put in the raging heroes almost a KS thread, for example, will that get moved as well?
I honestly don't mind if the butt jokes are removed, but I don't beyond that why it was moved to the OT. I'm not asking the Mods to explain their reasoning, just to please move it back to N&R with the stiff warning that if we can't keep the thread clean that it'll be moved and never brought back or worse.
Does this mean that the mod(s) have taken a stance on Kickstarters being news and rumors?
No, it means that the thread is so terminally OT and full of crap that I had a choice between locking & deleting it. Don't try and derive unified motives from the individual actions of Mods, for we are ineffable.

It was this, or removing the thread entirely. You guys decided to play with your new toy; accept responsibility for breaking it.
nkelsch wrote: I was wondering what the back of the models look like... Do they have funny-looking tails on the other side?
There isn't anything on the other sides - they look more or less the same as the fronts. I will post images to it when I get home.
kronk wrote: Yeah, do you have enough people in case the sales for this are above expectation?
I have 4 additional people that can help me cast, and have access to more if it really, totally comes down to it. I'm not too worried about it, they're not supposed to be delivered until September but again I hope to have the vast majority done and good to ship by July, the "official" date is to cover me in case something... unexpected happens.
Hulksmash wrote: I think that's poor form to shift this to OT. It's a kickstarter. It's news. It's models. If you're going to banish one you should banish them all.
Agreed.
Furthermore the thread's existence in N&R was approved by Insaniak.
The chatter in here is no less off topic than almost all of the kickstarter threads. Slap a NSFW tag on it if you want to but I find the fact that this got shifted to OT when I see much, much more off topic conversation and pointless posting in KS and News & Rumor threads kinda sad.
At first I thought it was a joke. Reading the thread allowed me to understand it was in fact a genuine kickstarter. For a site that allows a lot of companies to basically keep running advertisements in it's News & Rumors I say put this back. And I haven't even pledge on this yet.
Besides, it's nice to see a lighter side of Dakka once in a while, god knows it's gotten awfully whiney and pissy lately.

Are you just trolling us Janthkin? What is this thread full of?
Also I'd like to point out that there is more news in this butt filled thread than this thread with an actual product being funded, not like, "if we get x likes, we'll do y and z."
Why are you guys doing this? I'm not sorry, and I'm not gonn adjust, and here's why: some of the MODs may not appreciate the cheeky one liners, they may find the cracked jokes to be in bad taste, but every single bit of hot air we spew on the topic keeps the thread near the front, gets people interested, and gets Ouze's project funded. Now I don't personally have an interest in owning "flying butts" (sorry Ouze), but as a fellow Dakkanaut, I want to see Ouze's project gain support, and that's what we were doing. MODs, if you'd like to see this succeed, please put it back where it belongs.
Just heard about this now. At first I thought it was a joke, but reading the thread helped me to understand it was a real kickstarter. This thread should be in News and Rumors, but seeing as how the Mods are NO FUN ALLOWED types, I'm not exactly surprised.
I'd like to pledge, but I'm going to pass. The sculpting is pretty average for a joke mini and the figure is a little large for what it's supposed to be. It should be smaller with larger wings, like the old plastic bats that came in the WHQ box set. The detailing needs to be better on this wings as well. look at the metal wings that came with the 40K2 gargoyles. There ne4eds to be some additional veins and striations in the musculature. A little forked demon tail on the back would be awesome as well.
I also take issue that you can't order individual models, so one buttpirate and four generic guys. Or one buttpirate and nine generic guys. Or whatever squad-and-squad-leader combo you want.
But seriously, the detail needs to be better on this. It's a good first effort, but the final sculpt needs to be much better.

Thank you for your detailed criticisms. They are very useful to me, especially when I go to "tighten up" the final sculpts at the end when they actually go into production. I learned a great deal from this effort, and one of the big ones is that the proof of concepts should look at least as good as the final product. That will help me with subsequent efforts.
Tails are probably out, at least for the products I've posted so far. I think it would be too far of a departure from the posted and hence promised product; but I will consider them for further releases while this kickstarter is active.
However, to the final point, re: ordering - you can indeed order single models, either for the named character or not.

Why did we remove puns and 1 liners? Because as it had been said by the mod that moved this, the thread was disasterously off topic, and so he moved it here. If by removing the OT pieces, it becomes easier for us to make the case to move it back into N&R. I've already flagged the OP of this thread in an effort to get it moved back. It's obviously not going to happen at this point which is a shame because this project could use the love that N&R had been giving it. I've since shared it again on my fb page simply because of the lack of traffic due to not being in N&R. With the mods, for the most part, you have to work with them to get what you want. I mean 13.5k posts on this site and I've yet to receive an official warning from the mods why? Because I play ball with them, I push back when I feel it's worth it to do so, and I work with them when it's beneficial. At this moment in time? It's far more beneficial to clean up the thread as best as we as users can and then request it's move back to N&R simply to show that we as responsible Dakkaroos can handle a thread about butts with a level of maturity.
Ouze wrote: They are very useful to me, especially when I go to "tighten up" the final sculpts at the end when they actually go into production.
This is actually good to hear: Some slightly more realistic wing structures would probably help for people who want to use these as a wierd chaos stand-in, and would also likely increase their shock value for people who just want to have them in their collection to for the sake of pure oddness. Since the front and back are apparently similar based on your earlier post, improved wings might also help establish some sort of facing should that become relevant.
So all of this got started because of people whining about kickstarters in N&R?
No, I'm with the mods on this one. Everything about this thread, and it's participants minus a few, reeks of OT. To the black void with it and good riddance.
d-usa wrote: Very disappointed about this being moved to off-topic. It really should be in N&R.
Hey look! An OT post!
If talking about the move is off-topic, then wasn't the move itself off-topic .
I just think it was legit news, I'm excited about the Kickstarter and backing it at the $30 level. I don't know if anybody is planning to pull their pledge at the last minute and treating it as some sort of protest Kickstarter, but I know that I am not. I think the product is fun and I'm always looking for some lighthearted humor in my horde armies.
Will all future Kickstarters face editorial clearance requirements?

Then I wish you well with them; for that matter, I wish Ouze well with his project. The problem wasn't the KickStarter; it was the page after page of ill-conceived "humor."
Will all future Kickstarters face editorial clearance requirements?
And, of course, there are the attempts at editorializing that are underlying this whole KickStarter.
EVERY POST is subject to moderation; there's not much need to provide additional guidance. If something is in the wrong place, based on my view, I'll move it. If posts are inappropriate or violate Dakka's posting rules, again based on my opinion, I'll act there, too.
And what is on-topic humor. Are suggestions such as "butt-pirate" on-topic since they meet the subject of the Kickstarter and were also incorporated into the design of the stretch goal?
was talking about this with a friend of mine and he thought they might make good stand ins for blood angel assault marines, though I wonder if a more angelic wing type is an option?
Well, my wife is looking forward to helping with the production - she's one of the people I trained up on how to do it. I've also started shopping around for the 2 pieces of equipment I've long wanted and never quite acquired - a pressure pot and a vacuum pump. I'm waiting until it ends to actually buy hardware though.
Right now I don't think I need either item to do this successfully - I've cast a lot of jewelry for Etsy that's fundamentally similar (but not butt shaped) without issues; but I think they would make unacceptable casts much more rare.

After the I read this line and the first thought into my head was, "Ouze is using us to fund his bomb making experiments".
Damn terrorists and your pressure cookers. *shakes fist in anger*
Ouze wrote: This thread is never, ever going to leave the OT so you guys should probably stop making posts requesting such.
Yeah man...
I await your chance to make these with a pressure pot!
If you don't mind me asking, what does that do? Better detail, faster casting, that sort of stuff?
Putting newly poured resin into a pressure pot compresses the air bubbles smaller, so that either a) it gives the air bubble an easier time to escape to the vents or b) compresses the air bubbles so small, you don't see it.
Could there be zombie butts? As a stretch goal? I have no idea how you would sculpt such a thing but I reckon a zombie flavoured sculpt would slot on quite nicely what with zombie everything atm.
So if a member of the site starts a Kickstarter, other members must be humorless or else it gets moved away from the appropriate forum? Can't we back the problem and also be of good cheer? It doesn't seem fair to single this out.

Not to mention I'm sure there are loads of off topic posts in every other giant kickstarter thread, why is this one special?
I'd imagine that this KS thread is special because of the 3 pages of bum jokes.
I'm all for low brow humour but i can see how the admins/mods might frown on an over abundance of it. Especially when some of it could be considered derogatory.
Talk to Wehrkind, he uses a pressure pot / vacuum pump setup and gets fantastic results! And is a wealth of knowledge in that regard

Added the final character as the $900 stretch goal
Update #3 · May 16, 2013 · 2 comments
Hello again all,
I've added a $900 stretch goal, which will be unlocked I suspect in a few days. I have added a teaser image as well.
I've also added a pledge level that includes simply a Captain Buttbeard and a single Flying Assault butt, for someone who just wants a single one of each at a small discount.
I've started lining up some perks to throw in as freebies - more on that in the next few days.
Thank you again for participating in my project. The excitement is incredible.
So ouze did you have any expectations going into this? As we approach the $1,000 mark is it safe to say we've surpassed your expectations? Or did you secretly know the power of the FAB?
So uh... are you proud of your achievement or does it hurt deep down to know that the most sucsessful idea you've ever had [citation needed] involves selling people flying resin bums?
I've got another update with what will probably be the last character-type model, a flying monster/demon. Well, they all fly, I guess.
So now I'm thinking free stretch rewards. I found some designers who were willing to let me incorporate their art into the project for wallpapers etc, but I also would like more... tangible stuff. I thought fridge magnets would be good but as it turns out they look surprisingly spendy (!) if I want decent ones and not ones I printed out at home. The other possibility is stickers, but I'm not sure how much people would like that. If you guys have ideas for tchotchkes that you find appealing I'm all ears.
Although I said I wouldn't make any more models I am very tempted to do Vampire Bats Butts, small, 3 to a base as a swarm-type monster.
So far as the Rumpagon's price, I'm kind of in a weird spot. I am pretty sure you're right - $50 is probably too high. But someone already pledged on the army deal which includes it, , so I can no longer adjust the price downward on that. I could lower the price on the single ones but that means the guy who already pledged kind of got jerked and is essentially paying more for the privilege of having a bundle, something even Games Workshop doesn't do (yet). I think I can't really address that unless I get a window where he backs out but before anyone else pledges; otherwise I think I have to live with not moving many (or any) as is (unless someone here has better advice).
If I was smarter about this, I'd preview these things beforehand and get a feel for what the crowd thinks as far as concept and pricing. So far I've learned something valuable almost every day of this.
But who knows how it will go, it's not even been up a day yet.
Ouze wrote: Uh... where on 4chan, exactly? I know it was on /tg - Cyp gave me a link - but it's not on B is it?
I'm at work so I can't go digging atm.
There was one on /b/ that i saw, but it was started during peak hour and didn't get many replies so it died pretty quickly.
I can see Rumpagon being popular with Slanneshii collectors. It's got everything Slannesh needs. Phallic like shape, a big honking bum and a classy tophat.

It's Kickstarter, so he can lower his pledge: just release an update that you mixed up the price, fix the cost of the army deal to what you find appropriate, leave a comment in the comment section of it, and hopefully the guy will see it and adjust accordingly-or buy more stuff with it.
Well, I took a nap (I work nights) and just woke up. Now I've sold 3 of the Rumpagons through the army deal set. I think I'm going to let it ride at this point for good or ill.
I'm going to see about sculping some... well, I'm not going to say, let me see how they come out first. Something as a freebie.
So far as BOLS; there were a lot of things about this project I did not expect* and one of them was the places it's shown up. In the beginning of the project 80% of pledgers were from Dakka referrals, but that number is now 19%. The next biggest was from people searching on Kickstarter itself. A good percentage otherwise came from, of all places, Something Awful, whose thread on it would up being incredibly friendly and respectful.
I have not advertised this anywhere outside of a single closed pilot thread in the DCM area, and then this thread in News & Rumors The OT, so this spread pretty organically.
*Such as the fact this project has been ruining my sleep. 3 days running now I woke up after 4 hours because I kept wonder how my pledges were doing and having ideas for more stuff. I can only imagine what it's like for these guys that have projects hitting hundreds of thousands of dollars, who are not only tossing and turning thinking about that, but also possibly paying off their mortgages early.
That's exactly the plan. I'm hoping to get a pressure pot and a vacuum chamber & pump. I have been running a spreadsheet and that should be possible if things stay more or less where they are (or improve).
I have a whole other project I'd like to do, after this is all done with, that's really going to require that equipment I think. I have learned so much from doing this.
This has to be the most slowed kickstarter ever, that said, i will be giving Ouze money. The ridiculousness of the kick starter and me owning a bat winged butt are just too good to pass up. What's up next eagle winged vaginas, Petorydactyl(?) winged penises? Go the whole gamut and do the undercarriage trio!
Oh you've already done a reptillian schlong, Ouze you are a visionary!
I threw my hat into the ring. So if I somehow armed these with the right wargear, would anyone have problems with me using them as "counts as" Seraphim?
Sir Reginald Buttlesworth is a kickstarter-only model, included free with any pledge $30 or higher if we end the project at $2,000 or more.
Next, we have Vampire Batts Butts.
These guys will be available with any pledge that is getting a physical product for $6 per base of 3, which would go on a 40mm base - the bodies are about as big as Necron Scarabs.
Additionally, If the kickstarter ends at $2,500 or higher, there will be a free Vampire Butts base included with every pledge of $30 or greater.
I also have some forum signatures if people would like to use them. The background art is used with permission of the artists, Jacob Charles Dietz and Mihawq. There will be full-blown wallpapers using these at the end, as well as a third one yet to be done.

That, I'd have to let someone else answer, but it probably depends on your local playing place.
Snrub wrote: Any chance of getting a fat stogie for him to smoke as an accessory?
I hope not, because I can only think of one place for it to go, reasonably... and then it would just look like a hanging turd.
Eric
Unfortunately, this is correct, Same problem with a moustache, which I also tried.
Also, his name is technically Dr. Reginald Buttleston, Esq, but I keep calling him Buttlesworth since I decided to change it at the last second (I liked both names). If you see that they're the same mini, and lets just presume one is an alias for when he needs to lay low, Mexico way.
If he's got to lay low down in Mexico, remind him not to drink the water. I'm not quite sure how badly he'd end up with a bad case of Montezuma's Revenge.
For some reason my girlfriend doesn't find this all as interesting as me. She's sick of hearing about this kickstarter. I don't know why I'm so buzzed about it either, but hey. Probably because its awesome.

She needs to get with the program... It's 2013 people. Flying butts are all the rage now.
Also some glorious person just pledged $90 and bumped us up over the 3k mark.
Additional Ironbutts and Vampires are both $6 each, you can have as many as you like.
I intend to limit the Sir Reginalds to one per order regardless since that's sort of a special one; the only one I'm destroying the mold for afterward. That being I am sure something can be done unofficially for my fellow dakkaroos, and also hey holy jfc did you see it's at like $3100 now
If I post in N&R that I'm going to start a miniature company that makes butts with wings, and attach a crayon drawing of it to my post, would it be locked and I'd be told to post when I have something to show for it, or can I continually bump it month after month after month with more winged butt drawings to keep it in the top 10 N&R posts?

So, still hope for this concept art to become a reality:

I don't think you understand, we didn't get enough facebook likes.
OK, in all seriousness now. It looks like Amazon takes 14 days to process payments and then it's available for withdrawal, so it takes I'm guessing 3 weeks for whatever funds are actually available after we shake the deadbeats out.
At that point I can start ordering supplies for casting. I've spoken with a few people about this already - notably Curtis from Ramshackle Games and Whembly - and although I promised I wouldn't spend any of my own money until the project wrapped in case of some last second fiasco, I did cheat a little and already bought a pressure pot and some silicone; probably enough to make the final molds.
I need to re-sculpt the masters because most of the prototypes are ass (no pun intended) as far as technical quality goes - they were adequate for their purposes but that purpose was proof of concept, not a casting master.
I also scheduled a week off of work in July for when the bulk of the casting will actually happen, though I do have other people I've spoken to about doing it.
Lots of stuff to do, supplies to order. I still need to find good postal software.
This is the stupidest Kickstarter I think I've ever seen funded.
...and, before anyone takes offense, I meant that with a smile on my face and joy in my heart that something this stupid could be so amazingly well supported.
Kudos, ouze. If I had the remotest use for them, I'd have supported financially. As it, you had to settle for emotional support.
LOL I'm glad I could be there for you.
d-usa wrote: I would have loved to see the Assmaster Mark 2.
There can always be another, bolder Kickstarter. I actually already have any idea for a new one, but that's for September or everyone is fulfilled, whichever comes first.
Ouze wrote: Of course. I mean, they're going to look the same pretty much, just, you know, not with fingerprints molded into them.
I don't know... finger prints on asses just... seems... right. The trick is you want those prints smaller... Sorta like your signature on these works of arts!
Once again Ouze i'd just like to say congratulations. A Kickstarter well funded.
Also i did a few quick calculations and incase you're interested you have relased into the world
-323 Flying Assault Butts.
-54 Captain Buttbeards.
-10 Rampaging Rumpagons.
-61 Sir Buttlesons.
-61* bases of Vampire Butts (so 183 total).
-61* Ol' Iron Butts.
For a grand total of 570 Butts.
I sincerely hope you're proud of yourself. I know i sure am!
*I couldn't calculate actual numbers because i can't tell who added extra to their pledge. 61 is a minimum.
I'm still at work so I haven't broken down the numbers yet, but weirdly enough, I don't have exact numbers yet either on the add-ons. You do that with the survey, but I don't want to send the survey until I'm just about ready to ship. I can guesstimate though.
Also, very curious about how it goes with the casting. I would really like to pick up some tips from you on that, as I may be trying to get some equipment to do vacuum pot casting myself later in the summer. I hope you post up all about your progress and show your setup, etc
I didn't personally pledge as I'm afraid this kind of humor doesn't really do it for me BUT if you continue sculpting / casting and do another project, perhaps for some ork bits or the like that I've seen you make before, I expect I'll be very interested!
Yeah i get the distinct feeling my FABs might get nicked by a friend of mine. She's got a thing for kooky geegaws and these fill that category nicely. So when she saw me looking at the KS page earlier today she freaked out and said she needed some. I truly fear for the safety of my forthcoming sir Reggie.
So, some updates (not meaty enough for an actual KS Update, but enough for Dakka)
1.) I had said earlier ITT somewhere I expected to have the funds in 3 weeks - 2 weeks for Amazon to do it's thing, then a week for it to hit my bank. These are the numbers they provide. That was wrong - well, maybe not wrong, but they were CYA numbers, not real world numbers looks like. The vast bulk of the money, like 90%, was available for withdrawal within a few hours; although Amazon's phrasing on this was a little ambiguous, you can request it immediately. I requested a withdrawal last night and it hit my bank today. So, 3 days, not 3 weeks. That's for all less Amazon & Kickstarters fees, and some transactions that haven't been processed due to issues; they will retry them for a week IIRC and then drop them as backers if they still haven't gone through.
2.) I've already started ordering some supplies (resin's been shipped), and am picking up some additional equipment today.
3.) I have 2 of the actual, production masters just about done. The technique and appearance weren't different; they're just more carefully done and run over with medium to ultra-fine sandpaper to give a nice smooth finish, then cast under pressure.
4.) My week off my actual work (with my schedule, it's actually 10 days) was approved, so that's a go for handling the bulk of the finer work, with some of the less complex work being done by my assistants. That's an unfortunately use of wording for what they'll be casting.
5.) The estimated delivery date is September, so I have some time to polish my technique, experiment with different brands and recipes, and so forth. I hope to ship a lot sooner but I've never promised that and am not doing so here.
6.) So far as selling them later - I haven't decided. I used to sell jewelry on Etsy and that was profitable but eventually it became a boring chore rather than a fun hobby. I don't care to repeat that, so this seemed perfect because it's a one-shot deal with a firm end date. I have other projects I want to do, and will move on to them after this is done. That being said I may change my mind later and sell some on ebay or what have you. The only exception is Sir Reginald, which is a Kickstarter exclusive and the mold for which will be destroyed after fulfillment, as I promised.
Alfndrate wrote:Ouze, what resin do you use? I've been seeing a lot of people use smooth on resin. Or are you using Alumilite?
That's TBD, but not Alumilite. Alumilite... is interesting.
I piloted it pretty heavily on my Ork Battlefortress. It cures very, very fast - the pot time on Alumilite White is supposed to be 2 and a half minutes. In practice, I found nowhere near that long - it started to kick within 60, maybe 90 seconds tops and at the 2 minute mark was already mostly gelled and certainly unpourable. I'm not saying that as a complaint. It actually worked out super well for fabbing up all of those individual links in essentially a single night at work, once I got used to pouring carefully to avoid bubbles - but for the current application, where bubbles are a deep concern, I need something with a very long pot (working) time to allow me to get it into the pressure pot and get the PSI cranked up.
Another issue with Alumilite is it's not quite as rigid as the other resins I've used. Even at room temperature, I found some pieces aren't soft, exactly, but large thin pieces are prone to drooping. Again, this isn't a complaint. The amount of flexibility was utterly perfect for a long length of tracks, because the slight droop added realism, and fitting them onto the wheels would probably have broken a more rigid resin over, and over again. If I was making another vehicle, I'd use Alumilite for the tracks over any other product in a heartbeat.
But because I don't want the wings to droop, Alumilite (white) won't work here, and they don't have any other resin lines with the characteristics I'm looking for.
I'm leaning towards Smooth-On's 327. It's got 20 minutes of working time, 2-4 hours to demold, and it's also easily pigmentable; but we'll see how some test runs go.
I'm also going to test out some microspheres. I've never used them before and have long been interested in trying them out.
Going back to Alumilite for a second here - they also make a water clear. It's got all these warnings about how it's industrial use only, but I found it to not be too bad. For clear parts it is aweeeesome. Perfect working time, perfect cast time. The only drawback is sometimes the finished part will be a little soft, but if you heat the mold properly this doesn't usually happen, and if it DOES, you can put it in the over at 150 degrees for a little whole and it finishes the cure.
And can i say wow. I went and found the thread on your custom battlewagon... yikes. That is amazing looking. I don't believe that i missed such an awesome thread for so long. I'm gonna have to go through it in detail tomorrow.
Well damn. I was late off the KS and Reginald is, ofc, best. I can deal with it, as long as I can get me some Night Lord's butts and some random iron butts...

It went several pages in the DCM boards before moving it to the genpop.
My apologies for the A bit of threadnomancy but it's awesome / hilarious.
Ouze's very own "Flying Assault Butts" have hit the big time.
They got a mention in on the BeastsofWar / Geek and Sundry's partnered show, "On the Table."
We probably all know about beastsofwar. However, GeekAndSundry is becoming quite a big thing now, with 650 000 subscribers and the new home of shows like "The Guild" and Wil Wheaton's Tabletop.
