So, nasty thread title, I admit. But I have been waiting and waiting for this game to come down in price. I thought I looked cool and seemed to be getting rave reviews.
This game has been hyped and heavily promoted on Steam for a while now. All video reviews I watched on YouTube seemed to suggest it was a great game.
But, I've not found to be enjoyable at all, so far. In fact, quite the opposite. Getting owned by almost any monster. Doesn't seem to be a way to heal yourself other than running over the crates, if there's a healing pack in there. The guns suck. They suck real bad. Like, abysmally bad. I'm level 3 so far.
And I'm not saying you should have the best guns right at the start of the game. You shouldn't. But I'm also not seeing any kind of gameplay action or storyline hook that makes me want to continue with this game.
Usually by level 3 in a RPG or even a FPS game I've gotten some kind of hook or incentive to keep me interested in the game. But I'm just not seeing it here. And I want to, but so far this game hasn't been enjoyable at all. I've just not seen any kind of enjoyable gameplay elements here.
But I did buy it on sale, and I'm wondering, does it get better, or is it only a leveling treadmill from here on out? Is there any kind of decent gameplay here and what's up with this game? It seems like World of Warcraft turned into a FPS.

The best thing by far is that it's ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. Beyond that... if you're only level 3 you've really not even scratched the tip of the iceberg... there's a lot to do here and you will soon notice things pick up.
At level 5 you get your class-defining ability, so at the very least stick it out til then.
If anyone else you know plays it, they can hop into your game to lend a hand.
Lastly, the classes have different ways of dealing with bad guys - at level 3 there's not much between them but if you're finding it too difficult as you get higher (say by about level 10), try someone else.

You judge a game based on less than 30 mins gameplay?
22783
Post by: Soladrin
I don't remember the start of borderlands 2 being hard....
Anyway, yeah, as said before, you are judging a game based on like 15 minutes of play.

I personally couldn't bring myself to complete the 2nd playthrough, but the first wasn't too bad. I think it lacks the innate replayability of BL1 but it's made up for somewhat by the improved script writing.

Well it doesn't help that your level 3, like Super Ready said stick it out till level 5 and the game will be a little easier on you as you get your abilities.
While some parts may be difficult on your own its not really a hard game as you immediately re spawn when you die.

It also was designed with multiplayer in mind, so that while you can still do single player and enjoy it, multiplayer is were it opens up.

I found Borderlands 2 to totally suck until you get to Sanctuary (level 5ish). Stick it out, it gets better (or at least, it becomes the Borderlands experience you expect).

This. I was kind of 'meh' on the game throughout the frozen wasteland you start in. Once you start reconnecting with the first game's characters though and getting a little more free roam in, the game gets much funner.

Yeah, I kinda do. Like I said good games usually have a solid hook right from the start that keeps you wanting to play more.

It basically is Diablo in the future, with guns and a solid story. And yes, the start was rather weak. Overall, I'd have preferred to see some green areas for variety.

Post by: purplefood
How are you getting your arse kicked at the start?
As long as you aren't overly stupid it shouldn't be too bad.
35785
Post by: Avatar 720
It depends on the class, too. My first char was Zer0 and I definitely felt 'weak', but when I re-rolled as Aston it got much easier.
27391
Post by: purplefood
Zer0 is really hard to start on tbh...
A lot weaker than the others.
12313
Post by: Ouze
Also, yeah; I found Zer0 in general to just... not be very much fun.
They wanted to have a rogue-style class that required a great deal of interactions to play, but I think they went too far and it felt more like constant work than fun. I think any of the other classes offer a much more enjoyable experience, I liked Axton and Gaige both quite a bit. and have tried them all .

I found Zer0 loads of fun...
If you max out the bloodlust tree you can be invisible for so long

I concur. When I first started playing solo zero it was kinda hard. After switching to the turret guy it went much easier.
Still, I also got bored with the game quite fast.

Post by: kirsanth
Playing a co-op based game solo will indeed make it seem awkward, at best.
241
Post by: Ahtman
Recommended Starting Classes if solo: Commando, Mechromancer, Gunzerker.
The other three don't have a way to easily avoid gunfire or deal with being the only target for many levels. The Siren is sort of on the border, depending on which build you go with. If you are playing co- op it doesn't really matter as having an extra person to draw fire makes a big difference.
Also, the next D&D themed expansion looks like a lot of fun.

I've put a couple hours into it. The beginning of the game is much like later on in the game.
From personal experience, if you think the beginning is boring, it will stay boring for a while. Maybe very late game it just gets radically different but I'm pretty sure that's not true.

See if you can find a friend to play with. The dialogue is funny (love Claptrap) but I don't think I could play it without a friend; way too many other games out there that are better playing solo.
39297
Post by: Cave_Dweller
Ok so been playing it a bit more and it definitely got better. I got to level 10 so far. You guys were right about the powers. And that you shouldn't play it solo as well. I mainly play singleplayer games on Steam. I guess I just got frustrated with a rough start to things.
I chose the Siren class and she is best with company, it seems. So I went online and some uber veteran player that randomly joined my game was extremely generous and gave me a really nice blaster, some kind of poison submachine gun. That made a tremendous difference and it's nice to see the community is fairly good in this game. In fact all of the people that randomly joined my games were fun to game with.
Plus it definitely has a good sense of humor. Bonerfarts, lol.
I shall redact my initial post, this game is fun! =)

Post by: kirsanth
If you play Siren co-op, get Rez ASAP, then try out the tree on the right - avoid blight pheonix though - Phaselock that can revive freinds, and also slag, electrocute, burn, and corrode enemies is awesome. Eventually singularity can be added. Any time I play another character I miss Phaselock.

I tried using Zer0 at fist, and did good with him but on my 2nd time around I used Maya, she rocks.
The game might be tough at first if you're not used to it, you just have to get a feel for things. What I like most about part 2 is the story and it's just a funny game all around. And the DLC stories are fun too. Maybe it's not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Solo, Axton has to be my favorite, the turret just rocks.
But with a group I love Zero, he's very difficult to play to start with, but once you get further in, wow. With my skills, class mod, relic and gun(200% melee damage) I can deal well over 30k melee damage at level 30 xD

Post by: Vulkan_He'stan
There is no "best gun" every gun has randomly generated stats, then it depends on your class skills and mod,
then it's down to preference, for example I rarely use a pistol that isn't Jakobs or a shotgun that isn't Torgue,
I never use Tediore apart from rocket launchers.

Also I dislike shotguns...

Post by: Deathklaat
except Krieg + Shotgun = win
really, i just use my shotty untill i am nice and close and wait untill i am at 33% hp and then i murder EVERYTHING.
so far with my new class mod and skills i can 2 shot a super badass the same level as me at 40. I laugh at bosses as i rampage through them usually only needing one or two rampages to kill them. doing well over 150k dmg at lvl 40 is totally broken.

I never really cared for shotguns, I'm the spray & pray type so I'd have a sniper rifle for long distance stuff, and a good assault rifle and smg ready for when things get close. I take the highest dmg rocket launcher I can find and that's just my Second Wind machine. If I go down, I pull out the launcher and blast away till I get up again, that's really the only time I ever use one.

If it's still a form of the fire pistol, it's still not too fancy once you start getting stuff like the rocket launcher that hops like a demented bunny rabbit. Or the submachine gun that makes extreeeeeemely irritating noises whenever you fire it. Or the robot shotgun that delights in your frags.

There is also a second Tinderbox which you can get in Tundra Express by beating up the snowman's face at the entrance of the zone.
It's usually a good 10 levels higher and more effective.

That was fantastic. It had the right amount of depth, with the right amount of silliness and seriousness.

Post by: kirsanth
The season pass was stated to include DLCs that are already released (now) - the last promised was Tiny Tina's. For solo play only, I am not sure - it does give you a lot more content to prevent the need to grind as much. I thought it was/is a phenomenally good deal - but I have a partner to play with basically all the time. Random thought: Is there a way to see time played on PS3? I know Steam tracks it and was talking with someone at work who thought their 300 hours played was a lot. I immediately thought of my first MMO character that had time played pass the 1 year mark . . .and realized that I don't recall a means to check with these.

Bear in mind to make sure you find a reaaaaaally nice 'plain' SMG in addition to an elemental one. There are quite a few enemies in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep that flatout ignore elemental damage.

I definitely agree that it's smart to have a nice high-dps non elemental gun for this one because of all the skeletons. The best way to deal with a lot of skeletons is a plain old bullet hose.

A high damage one shot shotgun got me through the entire DLC, barring needing to chuck the odd vortex grenade to pull archers of their perches.
The ending boss fights seemed to be a tad easy to me, but perhaps they're harder on Ultimate Vault Hunter mode or whatever its called. It was nice to get the sun and rainbows back at the end though. ...I was getting rather fed up of the drearyness, and that loss of saturation actually looked rather nice on the engine.
...Hmn, now to go kill that moon base. Its been awfully up itself lately. =P
722
Post by: Kanluwen
"Ultimate Vault Hunter" is basically a mode which requires you to play with a group, no ifs ands or buts. You NEED a group or an incredibly broken set of gear/spec to succeed, no matter the character.
"True Vault Hunter" is far more balanced when compared to UVH, but still adds a bit of a challenge.
Speaking from my experience as Axton in Tiny Tina's DLC:
A high damage bullet hose is a Very Good Thing as the enemies like to swarm.
The Swordsplosion is also amazing for the DLC.
The Legendary grenade mods from Tiny Tina(Fire Storm and Chain Lightning) are godlike when you acquire them.
60944
Post by: Super Ready
Meh... I found Chain Lightning to be kinda lacklustre, but then I am carting a couple of high-level purple grenade mods around.
Its biggest problem is that you need a direct shot for it to take effect - that's what sniper rifles are for. Grenades are at their most useful getting at targets you can't shoot straight to.
722
Post by: Kanluwen
Are you talking about the Legendary, "Chain Lightning" or the Blue "Lightning Bolt"?
In any case, you do not need a direct hit.
Try throwing it at a wall near an enemy sometime and see what happens.

We have an Assassin and Axton so far.
Our goal is to do it in such a way that we do not have duplicate characters to prevent arguments over loot. It has worked great for Normal and True Vault Hunter.

i have been playing solo with Krieg and i really havent had too many issues playing through all 3 game modes.
the first playthough was a bit annoying as i needed levels for skills to have a build that worked.
true vault hunter mode was actually a breeze and the only real problem areas i had were badass constructors and super badass loaders, most bosses were easily dispatched in 30 seconds or less.
so far in ultimate i have not had any problems, even in places where i thought i would have trouble things have been cake so far.
maybe it is my build but it is definately not my gear as i have not farmed for any really decent gear as i do not see a point untill level 61.

Well, we finally picked up Chain Lightning tonight - and yeah, I stand corrected. That thing is the COMPLETE awesomesauce. Magic Missile is pretty damned useful, too.

How does Krieg play? I've been considering starting out a new game as him (having only played for a significant time as Axton). The idea of just running at things and hitting them seems like it'd fit my playstyle (I tend to run at things and shoot them due to having a woeful accuracy half the time...because of said running). However I've found that the melee system can be a bit lacking at times (ie trying to hit that damn villager with the second note in Dragon Keep), so I'm unsure how that would hold up (though I'm sure it'd be easier considering that enemies aren't typically running away from you...).

With Krieg you really need a partner as you'll find yourself going down fairly frequently (Although this could just be me playing badly)
But going down isn't so much a problem with Krieg, if you can get back up that is, as taking any damage reduces the cooldown of your action skill.
Krieg also doesn't just rely solely on his action skill, many skills you put points into can boost his action skill and his regular gun play.

You can do Solo Krieg, but yes, you need solid fundamentals.

I really don't find Krieg to be a problem and I play solo, this is my first character above 25 so I am really green at this game.
Krieg really depends on your build, knowing when to use your ability and knowing which targets to go for first.
Normally I run in with a shotgun and empty it as I go towards the hardest mob, use my ability at 33% and destroy the hardest mob and clean up house.
if I get low on life or go into fight for your life I go after a weak mob to bring me back with my ability ready to use and it starts over again.
it is not uncommon for me to run through an area using 3-5 abilities to clear the whole mob spawn.
bosses are a bit trickier but as long as you keep weak mobs up to gain full hp or save you from fight for your life you are fine.
Krieg when done right is a BEAST. it was not uncommon for me to do an entire area's missions with every mob and boss having a skull next to their name. Super badass mobs usually died in 3-4 hits with my special.

Two new characters coming in season pass 2, as part of season pass 2.
Sarah(recognize her name, anyone? ) and Wu (male Siren WUT?!)
The Moon Base is going to include some new weapon types(Frost weapons!) like Hyperion Assault Rifles and Rocket Launchers along with Maliwan Shotguns.

Post by: timetowaste85
Isn't Sarah the lesbian doctor who refused to test Eridium on the guy in the audiologs because of his husband's condition? I'm pretty sure that's her. Interesting to have a Doctor join the team...insane amounts of healing'Eridium improvements to teammates? Imagine the possibilities...Thanks Kan!! Sorry I couldn't join you guys yesterday, if you got on-my Internet privileges were declined, as I feared. Also, Wu-hoo ( ) to the rest of it!!

Post by: Kanluwen
Sarah is Axton's wife.

Never mind, I just googled who Sarah is. Wow. That's...mean? Poor, poor Soldier-Boy...

Gah! Beat me to fixing it!!
Is it wrong I was hoping for the lesbian doctor? Not just for the potential romance options with Moxxi (drool), but a doctor going heal-happy on teammates would be the greatest 4-player addition of all time.

Post by: Kanluwen
Well, considering that Sarah is going to be bringing a drone to the field rather than a turret you might still be seeing a defensively oriented character.

It was on the Gearbox forums earlier today.

So if Kan's information is correct, and the dev wasn't trolling the thread, our character count will go up to 8, and we'll be up to 5 dlc levels, plus whatever else they throw.

3 DLC packages, the size of Captain Scarlett's Booty.
Moonbase is DLC package #1 and releases at the end of July, DLC package 2 in August, DLC package 3 in September.
Characters are included this time.
What is interesting is that this jibes with an earlier rumor that we would see two of the "new characters for Borderlands 3" introduced before the next-gen consoles hit.

Four.
Lilith
Maya
and now
Wu
I am personally speculating that Wu is a 'recent arrival' or that he might be present in the second DLC package, which is reputed to be a Vault on another world.

I'm getting absolutely nothing with google fu on this. It sounds pretty far fetched for something so big to get revealed in a random thread and not in a panel.

Bear in mind that they originally revealed "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep" as a poster strategically placed in a photo of a staff member passed out.

I take it that by "recent arrival", Kanluwen means that what with(SPOILERSPOILER)'s passing on, there's a gap for a new Siren. Seeing how as there's only 6 *at one time*.

Post by: purplefood
Well
Seeing as Steele died and spoiler also died there are only 3 definite live Sirens including the new guy.
I just found it kinda odd that 5 of the galaxies 6 Sirens were on Pandora in less than a decade.

Not *so* strange when you consider that Maya only came after hearing about other Sirens already, and *SPOILER* was dragged along because of Eridium... which may well have something to do with the new guy turning up.

Yeah, but this is "new characters, here is who they are, we are doing 4 more DLC packages", which is a lot more of a reveal than "this is the name of the next dlc"
Now, the idea of another 4 DLC packs? Yeah that's perfectly likely. But getting a reveal with this level of specificity doesn't seem real.

Post by: Kanluwen
It was more than "this is the name of the next DLC" that got revealed though.
It was a HUGE poster of Roland as a knight with Ellie wearing the 'slave Leia' costume and Butt Stallion in the background.

The Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2 DLC will be released this fall for $5.00. It includes 11 more levels and Digistruct Peak Challenge, which is a new map, loot and the "ability to 'over level' your game for extra challenges." The DLC will not be part of the Season Pass.

If players beat the boss, they will be awarded new character customizations.
Pricing for the DLC will be announced later on and it will not be inclusive to the Season Pass. The company also announced that additional Headhunter Packs are slated to release at a later date.
Extra ammo capacity, backpack, bank slots and more customizations for Borderlands 2 characters will be coming later this year as a free update. Extra heads Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is coming "soonsih." Also shown during the Gearbox panel, a new short film for Krieg the Psycho was teased and stars Tiny Tina and Brick as they outsmart Hyperion captivity.

The Lady fist is the most beast unique pistol i have come across as the 400% extra critical damage it does is epic and when tied with the bee shield the amplify damage makes it a boss killer. (I can kill the warrior in less than 2 minutes with it!)

Well according to a quote made by him (in mr torgues campaign of carnage) he says that he is broadcasting to you from his 'space truck' that is in orbit around pandora...so you may see it/it crashes into the moonbase because thats badass/you pilot and fire rockets from the space truck (whilst mr torgue plays a guitar solo) at the moonbase because thats even more badass.
