Just one of those "what if you could" kinda questions, so if you could have any one piece of real Warhammer 40k tech, be it a Bolter, Familiar, Power Armor, what would it be and why?
My personal choice is for a Frost Axe, not any Frost Axe though, my alter-ego's Frost Axe, the Kraken Toothed Chain Axe Frosthowl, An axe passed down through the centuries, embodying the strength of every Space Wolf who ever held it and baring a particularly temperamental Machine Spirit that makes it choosy of whom can wield it, empowering the righteous and just (regardless if they are human or not), and barring the wicked and damned from wielding it, tripling in weight and even biting back should they persist.
So, what would you all choose? I think for the sake of this thread that all components of armor, including the helmet would be considered "one piece"...

An imperator titan, of course.
I guess it doesn't come with the crew, though, does it?
In that case, a suit of terminator armor would be cool.
Then again... those drugs that let you change your appearance would be awesome.

Phantom Titan - only requires a single crew. Of course, it requires a psychic Eldar crew, so, probably no good for me.
Which probably rules out all of the Eldar/Dark Eldar stuff...
Riptide Battlsuit, maybe? Although, even it's best weapons can only go, what, a couple of hundred metres at best? Hardly "Humanity's New Overlord" material... Even the Titans don't exactly have long range weaponry by modern standards. Annnnd we DO have a *lot* of nukes lying around.
Hmmm.
A Wraithlord actually, would be kinda neat. Especially if I could tell it what to do. However, the original question doesn't really state that I would have any sort of unusual control over the object, so probably something a little more handheld...
Illic's rifle? Go Postal and watch people get sucked into Chaos could be good for a few kicks...
Hmmm... Yeah the thing is... Any SM/CSM weapon is likely going to be impossible to actually wield, since it will be designed for use by a mega power armoured guy. Eldar/Dark Eldar would be psychically controlled so no good there. Tau is likely to be fairly usable (but good luck reading the manual) PLUS the controls are going to be set up for some pretty weirdly shaped hands. Necron, probably the highest tech you could actually use, but again, robot bodies means super strength so good luck lugging a gauss rifle around. Ork stuff would probably be OK but geezus, would you trust it not to just blow up in your face? Have fun with the crazy psychic demon weapons, or semi-sentient gooey Tyranid stuff... So we're basically left with Guard stuff, right? Which is not in any significant way better than current technology, really, in fact, significantly worse in terms of range than just about anything.
I guess a Baneblade would be fun.

I would be all for a Riptide. Would make the commute a hell of a lot more fun. But I'd have to figure out how I'd get my 40k stuff/groceries/ect back and forth. And where I would park.
But then come the problem where people would freak out seeing you fly around in that thing. I remember it took my dad like 3 months to get his Concealed weapon permit. I'm not even sure what you'd have to go through to make that thing street legal. Then after all that, there's still the chance the military would gak themselves when I go by, considering I live pretty close to a few bases.
And I wouldn't even have the first clue on how to fix that thing if it ever got damaged. Anyone in a Riptide would probably be welcomed with open arms by the military, as long as they were an ally. So I would probably be using it in some sort of military combat before the year was over. Odds are someone would have developed some way to damage it by then, and that's only assuming it's immune to current weapon technology.
I'm not so sure I dig the idea of owning a Riptide now. Sounds like way too much work. I'll settle for a Tau Drone. That could be fun.

A guardsman's lasgun, because in "real life" they're far more powerful than a regular rifle, fairly accurate, and I can "reload it" by leaving the power pack near a campfire for a few hours. I'd never have to buy ammo again Also, it's cool, easy to hide, won't immediately scream "come confiscate me" to the feds like a Sentinel parked in my back yard would, and it's just cool. Plus, unlike a lot of stuff here, it's simple to use and work on, and is actually designed to be used by a regular person. Agent_Tremelo wrote: A humble Arvus Lighter. Realistically probably a lasgun or a personal teleporter, since a lasgun is easily portable, has various power settings, you can recharge the ammo just by exposing it to sunlight/heat source and above all is incredibly durable. The personal teleporter is also practical in the sense that it bypasses conventional physics and gravity altogether and assuming I can use it properly I can *poof!* out of those awkward conversations, avoid traffic as well as potentially get away with certain "illegal" actions should the situation demand it.
In terms of just plain old good fun it would be interesting to try and use the Shokk Attack Gun as a sort of vacuum cleaner in the house with me sending dust bunnies and all other sorts of trash directly into my neighbor's house. Heck I might even hear an explosion of gore when I accidentally suck my models with it and transport it into any nearby pedestrian's heads!

As far as I remember hotshot lasguns are harder to produce due to extra parts like gyro-stabilizers and thermo-cooling packs and therefore by extension are harder to maintain; emphasis on the maintain part since I believe it is because the hotshot packs end up wearing out the barrels more from the higher output of firepower they bring meaning that in the long-term (which fast-hitting elites like stormtroopers don't have to worry too much about especially with their knowledge of how to fix up their hotshot lasguns) they would be more prone to needing repair or at least have less consistency in terms of use compared to the conventional lasgun. That plus their packs are harder to recharge due to their heavier-duty nature. At least that's my take on it.

Hotshot lasguns are immensely heavier, bulkier, require a massive powerpack system, and are very complicated. There's a reason you see those big ol cables sticking out of it leading to the stormtrooper's back. If I remember right, they require a lot of specialized training to use as well. Plus, what are you going to run into these days that a hotshot lasgun would destroy that a regular one wouldn't? Whereas a lasgun I could use to pound in tentstakes, club a bear to death, or use as a support beam for a tent. It's smaller (some, like the Elysian model, are MUCH smaller) has far less parts (a few powerpacks and the rifle are all you need) it's lighter, and would be easier for me to use. They're designed for illiterate dirt farmers to use, I'm pretty sure I can keep it in decent shape. Considering you would just get the item, and there's probably not going to be a big market for replacement parts, the less parts it has to break on it, the longer it will last. It's like if you told me I can have an AK 47 or an early M16. I'd pick the AK, even if it's a lower quality weapon, because I know it'll stand up to far more abuse and is less likely to break in a way that I couldn't fix. Now that I think about it, a laspistol would be pretty cool too...

I wouldn't mind an Oldcron Wraith, assuming I used biotransferance to activate it. heh.
That said, the Arvus would be pretty cool too - I'd have gone for an Aquila personally, although that's because my instinct is to go for the prettier plane rather than the more practical. ^^;
That said, the number of times I've thought about how awesome it would be to pull a jetbike out of a capsule and just zoom off rather than walking... heh.
Of all the Tau gear, I think a stealth suit or a kor'vesa would be the most attractive option. Piranhas look fun, but I'd crash it in short order.

I would want a landspeeder. Why? It's not actually for the day-to-day utility - it's for the technology it contains.
Today it's exceptionally hard to get into orbit - but if it was possible to replicate the anti-gravity generator this would massively kick-start the exploration of space. The fundamental insights into physics this would provide would also have the potential to change the world beyond all recognition.
Am I the only one who's not just thinking of themselves, or looking at the utility of an item in terms of its technology rather than its utility? Perhaps I'm over-thinking this then

it's a question of whether the good (or bad) you could do and all of the experiences you could have in several lifetimes would be worth that cost or not. I imagine the answer will vary from person to person. you could also choose to stop playing the immortality game at any time

ooooo what to choose what to choose...
Power Klaw?
Thunderhammer?
Wych's hand weapons (like 2 wickedly curved blades or something)?
Heavy Flamer?
Heavy Bolter?
Sister of Battle undergarments?
what. to. choose.

Lots of people live without their family, through death or absence. You can always make new friends and death is a part of our lives. Saying that a life without friends and family is a life not worth living is degrading to the people living in those situations. Besides, who didn't say that you couldn't become a progenitor of a family?
Anyway, I'd like a space marine backpack. Humble and essentially unlimited energy. "Donate" it to science and help benefit the whole world.

It's not living without your friends or family, it's the constant cycle of befriending new people and watching them die, over and over and over. It's a pretty common theme in fantasy settings with elves and other long-lived races avoiding relationships with shorter-lived ones. Just bringing up the point, not trying to start anything, sorry to offend.

I didn't say when you'd be the progenitor.

I know it's a common theme and you don't mean to course offence, you didn't cause me any. Just being PC-brigady atm.

IIRC, they're not. They just don't have those urges. The junk is still there, and still works.

Let's see, if I get Terminator Armor (also including the TH/SS, for lulz), I am pretty much invincible against most modern day conventional weapons (including the SS). The TH means I can smash ALL THE THINGS and not care because I can tank that shell from the M1A2, and then use my hammer to crush it to bits.

You realise that Eldar don't have any concept of cultural sexual dimorphism, right?
Some of those boob plates? Nothing inside the cups. Just making sure you're aware.

Although an eldar jetbike would be amazingly fun.
The ability to reverse engineer something would require similar tech. A battle barge would be way to advanced for us (esp. when dealing with a gellar field and the warp engines that require psykers) to attempt to reverse engineer, the Tau battle ship while still really advance, would be easier for us to reverse engineer. and its ability for Faster than light travel would be understood better than, you need a psyker to and the emperor's golden throne to travel through the hell known as the Warp FTL.

Which is why I want one that is unbeatable. Controlled completely by my mind and explodes in a solar system destroying bang when I get killed, and just sits idly when I threten people to do stuff. None of this reverse engineer stuff. Nuclear deterant only works if the other side has none.

Can I have a flying hive tyrant pet, that won't eat me, and obeys only me?
Barring that.. hard choice... Do I go extra heretical with a Tau girl, or just a bit of heresy with a Sister of Battle?

Not to mention you'd have to be busting ass 24/7 to maintain that physiology in order to keep it functioning the way you describe.
On the up side, though, you could have a hell of a professional wrestling career!
