Some of you may notice the title change. Well... After reading the iron warriors omnibus(aga in) I decided to base my army around the iron warriors books. Some of you may have seen my warsmith Honsou conversion before. He will be the basis for the rest of the army, but I will also be attempting other characters from the book. Hopefully I will do them justice. Please take the time to view the whole thread and leave comments, even if its just to say you hate my army/ painting style.
Ok, so I really struggle painting tanks, my land raider still isn't finished after 3 months and my bl rhino still needs work. Somehow I just can't finish one tank before buying and starting another.
Ah well here's my latest. Any tips or criticism extremely welcome.
Please bear in mind the legion and company markings aren't finished, nor is any of the decidedly dodgy freehand.

I like it overall, but I think there are a few things that could be improved upon. I think it needs a little bit more black on some of the silver parts, like the recessed area on the rear above the tracks. The tracks look a little too underwhelming. If you paint black, drybrush silver and use some sort of dark brown wash it might help. The hazard stripes above the siege shield on the front look to be a little too much as well, they take away from how awesome of a job you did on the shield itself, and how great the gun mount hazards look. I think painting the smokestacks a different color like brass, copper or something like that and using a soot effect it would stand out.
Sorry if that is too harsh, just trying to pass down some stuff I do with my tanks, because I have the same syndrome as you. I have one painted vindicator that I haven't finished all the way and two base coated vindies that have been based for about 8 months now.
Keep up the good work, and sorry if that was too harsh.
I just looked at some of your work, and I love the land raider!!!
67578
Post by: tomcat31
cheers dude, and nah its not harsh at all. constructive criticism is what drives us all to improve. i get what you mean about the tracks and exhausts and will rectify these issues, Im still in the fairly early stages, so it should be fairly simple.

looks great! only thing I dislike is the writing on the back ramp.
beyond that maybe a black-brown wash on the bulldozer arms.. beyond that… look forward to seeing more! 'Iron within! Iron without'

Just a quick update, I still haven't started the tracks, but the dozer blade is nearly finished now and I've got rid of some of the hazard stripes.

I agree with the previous comments, and I think the plow looks a lot better now that you painted over the "IV" and "IX" with the black/yellow stripes.
You should drill out the exhaust pipes and remove the mold lines from them, then you could use black pigment to spread a bit of soot on them, that would look sweet.
This kind of work makes me want to get a tank for myself, too bad I have too many minis awaiting paint still

Cheers dude. I will be doing something with the exhausts although I'm not quite sure what that will be yet.

Great stuff - Nice to see the IW getting the love!
Ok, C&C - Vindi looks way better now you have removed the writing - its tough to get right (and why I have avoided it so far)! If you decide give it another shot I recommend figuring out the spacing first to make sure its centralised and even (Unless its graffiti).
I love the weathering, the metal parts have an aged, heated look (like an engine has been running hotly underneath), and the dozer blades are nice and dirty.
For the rear door of the Vindi (you mention youre not sure what to do there) - its perfectly fine to leave it blank, but if you think its a little bare, try freehanding a chaos star.
Personally I've used a simple star
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/365542-First%20Try%2C%20Weathered.html
And I've tried more complex ones (using the legendary Dave Taylor method):
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/531253-Chaos%20Star%2C%20Hazard%20Stripes%2C%20Iron%20Warriors%2C%20Weathering%20Powders%2C%20Work%20In%20Progress.html
I found these 'break up' large flat areas, without being too difficult to do neatly.
The rest of your models are great too - again, the weathering ties these models together.
Im doing some IW myself (found your stuff whilst hunting for ideas ) - here's the link to my Plog if youre interested (warning, I work slowly):

Unfortunately I have to agree with you about keeping my lines straight, I'm working on it though. As for the colours, they're just standard gw paints with sepia and/or black ink over the top.
38250
Post by: poda_t
may i suggest starting with the middle-most line/chevron? I find that starting from one edge and moving on over causes a greater degree of deviation than if you start from middle and work to the edges.

That's pretty much what I do. I'm just useless at keeping the lines straight and even. Ah well. I can live with it for now. Once I master it I'll repaint them all.

Scrap those doors, buy the forgeworld ones instead, you won't regret it. No offense, but your freehand < embossed sculpts
EDIT: Leave the door with the ladder on. That one looks great. And even better, if you just replace that one door, then you still have 2 pieces left over for a whole other rhino!
Also the eye on the back... I'd change that, too. If I were you, I'd just change it to more hazard stripes, and put a cadaver in it for detail.

No offence taken and I get your point about the fw doors, I used them on the black legion rhino I did about a year ago.
Unfortunately the doors aren't removable, they're a part of the side armour panels. You did give me an idea though

Got my bikers based up now, but that's pretty much all I got done. I wasn't even going to post tonight until I had a fortunate accident.
I spilled some superglue onto my palette and it ran into a pool of gold ink causing some kind of reaction.
The result of this reaction is the cloak on my plasma gunner. Somehow the glue fused the metallic pigments together and formed a flexible "skin" of pigment which I painted blue and stuck to the backpack.

Slightly happier with my progress today. I managed to get the rest of my csm squad basecoated and the first stage of the shading done.
I also managed to finish my plasma gunner. Complete with my first attempt at Osl. Though I'm not really happy with it.
With a bit of luck I can have this squad finished tomorrow, then I can move on to finishing off my previous squad.

Due to poor weather I've been unable to seal my marines yet again.
So I decided to start work on my sorcerer, he started out as the plasma cannon marine from the DV box set.
I cut off his head and replaced it with the cultist leaders from the same set. Then added the high collar, gave him new arms and a weapon made from two marauder swords.
He's still a bit rough ATM but I'm fairly pleased so far.
C&c always welcome.

Well. It's time for my other iron warriors squad to receive some attention, I painted these about a year ago and by my current standards they're looking a bit poor.

It also features some of my first conversion attempts, which will be re-worked. Thanks Bobaram. I agree whole heartedly about practice making perfect
Started the re-work today, the guy at the back had a massive arm from an Ork nob which I figured could be explained as a mutation.
I then read that the iron warriors replace mutated limbs with bionics, so the arm had to go. Unfortunately I had no bionic arms to replace it with. Cue some fiddly cutting and gluing( as well as a lot of swearing)

For taping the lines out, Hazard lines on a figure is not something I have done personally, but I have used tape and an airbrush on a lot of canvases.
For even spacing of the lines, lay tape over the whole thing, and the pull up alternate strips. This way you get a pretty solid guide line to keep the line widths equal all long.
Another tip (i dunno what kind of tape youve used) is to look for what is known as 'fineline' tape. Its used in the custom automotive paint industry, can be curved if need be. its kind of plasticy, low tack. Purposed designed for painters. Regular cheap masking tape can be used well, but its working against you rather than with you.
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Erm. I'm not using any masking dude. I'm painting everything by hand, no airbrush, no masking, just my own brush control.
Yep, I know it's not perfect but its just my style. I am aware of fineline tape as I'm a fully qualified automotive custom painter, I just prefer to doit all by hand. Stupid I know but I'm pretty stubborn. Lol.

Wow. High praise indeed.
Well I've not really done much this week as I've been working, I have been plodding along slowly though. Squad two now has 4 completed marines, including one with a heavy chainsword and custom made bionic arm. Plus another 5 csm awaiting weapons, backpacks or basing. No10 is awaiting parts as I ordered the iron hands upgrade pack for the bionic legs.
I am also awaiting delivery of their transport, a rhino, plus fw extra armour kit and doors. Feeling a bit guilty over spending £50+ on a rhino, but I'm hoping it'll look cool. Will post pics once its arrived and assembled.

hey dude, you might not need this, (insanely expensive rhino for the win) but using regular masking tape, you can mark out line on vehicles quite well.
Take the tape and take some of the tackyness off it (stick it to the desk a couple of times) and apply to model and run a watered down varnish along the edge of the tape. It forms a good seal against paint being applied by brush, but should peel easily and without damaging the underlayer. Just move onto each stripe as and when.
but iron warriors look epic, especially Honsu. That's a really nice conversion. Now, can i justify warning stripes on space puppies??
Edit to include the question i orginally wanted to ask, how did you buff our your vindi, in particular the base of the exhaust stacks? was it a bit, or did you craft them?

I saw the imperial lighting unit that's been repurposed as a bomb or grenade of some type. To that all I have to say is the following:
yoink.
I'm starting to wonder if i need to get a bigger bag and add another unit of iron warriors. It's a silly question given that I have a footsloggers iron warrior army.
moving on, i have a question, want previous edition metal CSM helmets? Technically they're "current" because the design fits right in, but some of the tusks, horns and other pointies make it hard for me to positively ID what kits they come from. I don't know that I can use them because I've got a lot of CSM as it is, and a lot of marines, and I really, really, don't want to buy more stuff for the iron warriors....

I wanted to keep his armour dark like the pic, but I'm not happy with it. So I think I'm going to use the same colours as the rest of my iron warriors.

Personally in my opinion the gold outline around the Chaos Star on your Rhino's rear door makes it look a lot better but also a tad more ornate. Your Newborn looks very angry and about to hurt somebody so I'd say its a brilliant job you've done on him. Cant wait to see more.

Cheers dude. I'm thinking that the possessed dread needs to be tackled next. Also I have a desperate plea for help.
I've looked everywhere I can think of for images of "notha etassay " and slaaneshi blade dancers, only to draw a complete blank.
Unfortunately they make up a significant part of honsou's army, so leaving them out isn't an option.
Does anyone know of any images that could help me?

Post by: Adamski Alders
I'd love to see your work on the possessed dread as your work on the other parts of the Bloodborn have been awesome. With regards to Notha Etassay I've drawn a complete blank, google has nothing at all so I think its time I reread my Ultramarines and Iron Warrior Omnibuses and check the descriptions of them.

Post by: tomcat31
Tell me about it. Although I'm seriously considering ordering the finecast callidus assassin and converting that. Then using dark elves/dark eldar combinations for the blade dancers
Tbh it kind of makes my job a bit easier if there are no images. That way I'm not tied to a particular look
22060
Post by: Adamski Alders
That is a very good point there actually, you could certainly make them your own. For the Bladedancers my first thought was Dark Elves/Dark Eldar Wyches or similar. Its kind of hard not too when they are described as Slaanesh worshipping Bladedancers. Just had a look at that Callidus Assassin and think you'll be on to another winner if you do decide to go down that route. I'm definitely going to be looking forwards to your next updates.

Post by: tomcat31
Ordered the assassin and some eldar/dark eldar bits last night. Hopefully they'll be here for weekend so I can crack on.
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Well. My assassin arrived today. So I've begun work on notha etassay.
I started by removing the pistol. And rotating the wrist. I then removed the sword arm and the long pony tail thing as one piece.
Then came the tricky bit. I cut the hair away from the arm, repairing some of the detail as I went, then re attached it at a different angle.
Added a small plume to the head, and some modified elder swords. Hey presto, phase 1 complete.

Also started m'kar the thrice born. The Daemon prince in the possessed ultramarine dreadnought.
He's still very much wip, and only tacked together but it should give a rough idea of what I'm doing.

Ok so this guy isn't really a relevant part of my army, he's basically only for dark apotheosis rolls on the chaos boon table.
He's basecoated shaded and stage 1 of the layering is done. I'm pretty much using him for practice before tackling my possessed dread.
As ever all comments appreciated

Another awesome job so far mate, especially those eyes on that second picture. It makes it seem like he has a very piercing gaze that can see right through you, its brilliant. You have got to tell me the colour or colours that you used for them.
67578
Post by: tomcat31
It's actually very easy dude. It's white scar with west design blue calligraphy ink over the top. I tend to use a lot of calligraphy and drawing inks instead of gw washes, they're cheaper and you get more per bottle.

Today I've been dividing my time between m'kar and the daemon prince. The dp now has a decent base, and most of the painting done. I'm just waiting for the rain to stop so I can seal him before the final highlighting.
With m'kar I've finished the build and started the painting, he's in pieces ATM so some imagination is required.

I'm not usually a big fan of deep dark reds as the main colour but it works brilliantly on your Daemon Prince. I feel like I'm running out of adjectives to describe the awesomeness of your work so far because M'kar looks like he's going to be another fantastic conversion for your Bloodborn as well. Can't wait to see more.

Post by: tomcat31
Thanks dude. Due to work commitments I haven't been able to get much done today. However I can offer up another sneak peek of m'kar. And a slightly better image of notha etassay as he currently stands. Plus a gratuitous group shot of my favorite characters so far.

Post by: tomcat31
Erm. Him. Lol. I still need to de- feminize him a little. Although, breasts on a slaaneshii male would not be out of character.
In the books he is described as wearing a black leather bodysuit, so I'm going to go down that route. However I have an idea to slaanesh it up a bit. Maybe an " oil on water" kind of black?

Wow this army is fantastic!!
The Honsou and possessed dreadnought conversions in particular are amazing.
If this is table top standard (which it definately is not) then my own Iron Warrior army must be 'only play with the lights of so no one sees your minis' standard!
I have a few pics up here but need to get some more taken of my finished 1500pt army (in fact you commented on the thread about the lack of hazard stripes!).
To be honest, I am not a big fan of the hazard stripes on my models (and the one attempt I made on a rhino looked crap) so I probably won't do them again.
Some of my terminator squad have them but that is only because I bought them part painted from a guy who did it better than I could.

Why thank you RH, I'm not a fan of ott striping myself , but I forced myself to start painting them due to pressure from others. Lol

Awesome looking stuff as per usual. Is it just the flash or is your new camera making the blues pop on the maulerfiend? I'd love to know which metallics you have used on the defiler.
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Thanks dude. I think it's a combination of the camera and the luminous ink I used.
As for the defilement, it's leadbeltcher and brass scorpion for the metal parts, washed with sepia ink then drybrushed progressively lighter silvers.
The face is khorne red, sepia wash, layered khorne red and Mephiston red, with black ink for the detailing.

work continues on the defiler, a bit slower than i'd like, but i'm experimenting as i go. The idea was to try and make the "metal" parts look like actual metal rather than metallic painted plastic. I'm fairly pleased with the results but i would appreciate any opinions.

I'm loving the metallic on that Defiler, he looks quite menacing. He reminds me slightly of the Replicators from Stargate. Not much done this week due to work rudely interupting my hobby time. however i did manage to get some work done. The heldrake has most of the work on its metal parts, the wings are nearly done, and im quite pleased with the flesh/tubing (hope it shows in the pics). The rhino now has some of its (dodgy) freehand work done and im now working on the weathering. The backstory is that this rhino has seen millenia of service, and although its best days are long gone, it continues to serve the Iron Warriors reliably. once i finish the tank itself, i will be adding trophies from its countless battles. Plus i'll be using it for some much needed practice on my freehand, which as i will be "weathering" over it, doesnt need to be perfect.

Only 2nd placed? Congrats dude, it is such an awesome job you did on him. Though I think it needs more skullz lol.
I'm liking the look of Grendel, is his faced all scared up or is that just a differing flesh tone, I can't quite tell. My only criticism of him (and its not really a criticism) is I thought his Mohawk would be a little bigger/more noticeable. It has been a while since I read my Iron warriors omnibus so I could be wrong about that.
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Cheers dude. Tbh second was fair, the knight that came first was absolutely stunning. Grendels face is scarred, he was shot in the face with a plasma pistol releasing m'kar.
22060
Post by: Adamski Alders
I didn't realise he was shot in the face while rescuing/releasing M'kar. I knew and remember him being scarred but I thought it happened before they got to the star-fort and M'kar. I could be very wrong, as I haven't read any of the Honsou stuff in a while.
Would that be the purple and white Knight in the background in the Lord of Skulls pic above? He does look pretty awesome. And is that a Giant hiding at the back as well? I don't suppose Chaos or Lords of Skulls go in for rosettes but congrats again on the 2nd place
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Cheers dude, im pretty happy with him.
Anyway, I've been busy again working on squad Grendel, to be played as melta chosen. Plus a little kitbash to lead my homebrew spacewolf renegades (void wolves). Hopefully I'll get plenty done this week as im off work.
4
22060
Post by: Adamski Alders
Looking really cool as per usual. Are Chosen the ones that can have loads of meltas in the squad? I'm sure I've seen someone mention that to me before.
3 things I've noticed:
1: Woah!!! Look at the size of those horns sprouting out of that guys helmet in the back left of the Squad Grendel pic. You could put someone's eye out with those. Is that a normal Chaos helmet as I don't recognise it.
2: Maugrim looks awesome but are his lightning claws supposed to be pink or is that just photo glare or something?
3: Will your Void Wolves be completely Homebrew? The idea reminds me a lot of some of the Space Wolves who went nuts/crazy/Wulfen and turned and joined Huron Blackheart when his Red Corsairs attacked and captured The Wolf of Fenris battleship. I was wondering if maybe they were representing a part of Huron's gift of forces to Honsou before he sets out to attack Ultramar.
All in all I cant wait to see what's next and I'm quite interested and intrigued about what you'll do with the Void Wolves.

Just stumbled across this. Great work dude, love the gritty colour scheme
67578
Post by: tomcat31
Thanks guys, I'll try to keep it up.
In answer to the questions, yes, chosen get to choose from the best wargear, kind of the chaos version of sternguard veterans. the helmet is from the chaos sorcerer that comes with the chaos warshrine, the claws are going to be purple once he's finished, I need to re-glaze them with blue, and the void wolves will indeed be part of the renegade marine contingent of the bloodborn. Along with a small detatchment of Deathbringers and some others. Every time I re-read the books, I notice more things I need to include.
Eventually I'm planning on each "component part" of the bloodborn being a playable army in its own right. The whole army will only be brought out for apocalypse games

Thanks dude. Next project, a terminator squad to accompany maugrim. Converted from wolf guard termies, using chaos knight parts.

That poor Ultra used as a Rhino hood ornament :( what did he ever do to you lol. Seriously though they all look bloody awesome, I'm especially loving those Terminator heads. They make a nice difference to all those big tusked ones and fit with the aesthetic of the helmet on the Iron Warriors emblem. Nice touch.

Void wolf terminator squad, completely at last. Theres about a hundred little bits I could do to improve them , but they're a strictly tabletop army so I'm calling time on them.

As a quick break from painting chaos marines, I thought I'd show the valkrie a little love. cue the freehand hazard stripes and major headaches. Lol

Whoo more free-hand hazard stripes I do always love your commitment to those things. Your Void Wolves are looking good. Questions though - where did you get that nasty evil looking purple sword on one of those Terminators? Will the Valkyrie be part of your Reneguard?

Cheers dude, the sword is from the chaos knight kit, which I bought for the horses (skaven roughriderz), and yeah the valkrie will be used for dropping melta veterans onto high priority targets. I've also started my second deamon knight.

I just realised that this guy is missing from my thread. I got him back on friday, after three months on display at the warrington gw store

Does a second Daemon Knight mean another 100+ skulls for the shoulder pad or will you save yourself from that insanity?

Ah so a different kind of insanity beckons then I also just realised you said Skaven Rough Riders. That sounds like a really cool idea and I can't wait to see how you pull it off. Just out of interest do you get many battles in with your Iron Warriors/Choas Horde?

Wow those actually look real. And by real I mean like an actual model kit. I'm impressed.

Wow. High praise indeed. Theyre dark eldar helions, with skaven arms and heads. The weapons are from the chaos knight kit, as are the horses.
