Hello Dakkanaut! Welcome to the First Formula Paint Grand Prix Painting Challenge!!!! This ongoing Painting Competition will be the first of hopefully many to come, focusing on presenting you the artist, with unique painting challenges that will hopefully stretch your imagination and creativity, and push your painting chops to the limit! Each challenge will focus on a central theme that all entering artists *must* focus on. This limitation of options is meant to push the artist to pull out all the stops as each contestant will be working on the exact same subject matter.
The Subject: The Guardsman
The first challenge focuses on none other than the lowly guardsman. The idea behind this challenge is simple. How much personality, character, and detail can you give to a model that has very little of that in its sculpt. Many times, in painting competitions, people rely on the model to speak for itself, entering massively detailed and complex works. While this is always a beautiful and impressive sight to behold, can the same level of detail and awe be inspired by the lowliest and most bland models of them all?
The Rules
-The Contest begins 12/9/13 AND ENDS 2/7/14.
- Entering contestants may enter up to *TWO* Standard Cadian Imperial Guardsman built from the Current GW Box, Following exactly the below pictured Bitz. Its absolutely imperative that each entry is practically identical to the next as any additional sculpted on detail, regardless of how tiny, will offer unfair advantage. A PICTURE (FRONT AND BACK) OF YOUR ENTRY MUST BE PMED TO BEBOPDRUMS2424 TO BE OK'D FOR ENTRY. As long you follow the intsructions below, there should be no issues.
- Converting, Sculpting, Kitbashing of any kind is not allowed
- You MAY do whatever you wish to the base of the model as long as it fits on a 28mm round. (please note that only so many points are given in the judging to bases, regardless of extravagance. This is to keep the primary focus on the model itself, yet give you artistic freedom to further create the world in which he exists)
-You may NOT use transfers. This is to promote the use of freehand designs.
-There are absolutely no restrictions when it comes to Painting. Any Medium is allowed. Airbrushing is also allowed.
- You MAY (and are encouraged to) Upload your WIP pics to this blog. (once your build has been ok'd). You are very encouraged to also upload to your own personal plog if you have one as it will help generate interest and views and perhaps contestants that dont frequent this forum
The Build
* You MAY NOT add extra wargear, weapons, kit or tack.
* Models MUST be equipped with a las gun (without the bayonet)
* Models MUST be built using the same head bit
* Models MUST have knife and water kit on back
* Models MUST be mounted on a 28mm GW standard 40k Base.
a visual guide to the allowed bits. There are no exceptions.
The Judging Rubric
The finalized score of each entry will be the cumulative total of the below bullet points Each bullet point being rated with a 1 - 5, 5 being best (obviously). Please note, that certain painting styles will affect your score. you may score very high in certain categories (overall appearance), and lose points in others (brush control, use of advanced techniques), simply based on the way the technique is applied. This is simply a way to reward those that rely on more difficult applications of techniques and pull them off at a high level. (airbrushing osl effects vs feathering/hand painting them is an example of this). Also note, for advanced techniques, the score isnt necessarily attached to HOW MANY of these you use, but also its executions. For Example, an entry with many varied techniques executed around a 3, may not score as high as a model with only one or two techniques that are extremely well executed.
The model
- Creativity
- Color Composition
- Neatness
- Execution of Advanced Techniques (Feathering, Wet Blending, OSL, NMM, Freehand etc etc)
- Smoothness of blending
- Brush Control
- Overall Appearance (This includes the base)
- Skin/ face
- Cloth
- Armor
- Weapon
- Kit
Base
- Creativity
- Environment
- Execution
Modelling
-Cleanliness
Photoing
-Presentation/cleanliness
There will also be a 3 point float for judges favorite.
If you any questions regarding this rubric, Feel free to PM the 3 judges for this competition.

The Prizes
the good stuff
Bebopdrums2424 will supplying the winners 1,2,3 with shipping/postage of a trophy guardsman (with the winners name etched onto the trophy base) of Gold, Silver, and Bronze to the Competitons winners. In addition, special Comp banners of the corresponding placement will be sent to each winner that will allow them to embed their signature with a bragging rights banner showing their placement on the image.
In addition to these prizes, there will be an alternate award given to THE BEST COLOR SCHEME, picked by the public (via poll). Painting execution and ability will have no bearing on this award. It is simply about which color scheme people like the best. This winner will receive a squad leader model, in their specific winning scheme, painted by myself Bebopdrums2424.
This award is to encourage artists who feel they dont have a chance at winning a place to enter the contest. Even if you are a less experienced painter, you still have a chance to win! All you need is an eye for color and a little creativity!
Ok Folks, start your engines, put on your thinking caps, get your brushes ready! This competition is OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!! Please share the event and encourage your community friends to join Below is an official competition banner available to all who enter. Feel free to add it to your signature to promote the competition! Thanks in advance to all that enter. Remember, all entries must be PMd to me before being officially added to the competition. I'm in. Sign me the feth up. I realised yesterday, after rummaging through my bits that I don't have the parts to make up a spare Cadian. I could do a Catachan. In fact I could do 4 Catachans. But no Cadian. The odd thing is I don't even collect Catachans. Where are they all coming from... Anyway, lucky for me I'm heading into town today so I'll pick up a box of meat shields while I'm out. Ok so I completely failed at getting a linkable banner in my sig but whatevs. It's there.

Very interesting competition idea, I'll be watching to learn some things from you guys, but lack of guardsmen has me out of this.
Plus I've learned I'm way too eclectic to stick in on the comps, then it gets unfun for me to rush through to the finish line.

Hey J, glad youre in! Actually this came about because i saw a CMON article about a painting comp where the contestants were challenged to paint any mini as if it were a giant sculpted gemstone. (A future challenge for sure). And then i thought how cool it would be to challenge everyone to paint the same model. Glad youre here for the party

EDIT: I've been reading up on skalks comp, and there's a lot of good advice in terms of fine tuning a comp. I'm going to add this in to the main rubric. There WILL be PHOTO category to be judged. This will be based on cleanliness not so much your camera skills (I used my phone in the op pics) Of course if you have gimp (free photoshop available to Download) you'll be at an advantage, but you've a month (it took me 30 minutes) to learn how to do it, should you desire to. It's free and there is a great tut by ifalna here. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/467855.page
That level of photo presentation isn't expected but you'll be rewarded if you do it
Hope that's cool!!

Here are some WIP shots of the guardsman, I am just about to wash him with Nightshade Blue, which should both darken up the very pale blue basecoat and add some nice shading.
Also, his face and eyes are not quite done, I just picked up a new 5/0 brush for the nerve-wracking dotting-of-the-eye.
I am also making a terrain-base for him, deck plating with an open hatch with wires and such, but so far that is only primed in black, so, boring (and hard to see any details)
C&C welcome!.

So who is judging and to what standard is their opinion as to what qualifies the points going up or down in specific criteria. Did the judges win some super awards or go to art school to qualify them as ones who could spot intention versus mistake in the various categories? Otherwise it is just an opinion on what looks cool rather than any technically trained or merited opinion and talent.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
This isn't the crystal brush or anything, it's a community competition for fun and the judges are active members of this community. We are using a specific list of what we are grading. It's all in the OP. If it's not something you feel is worth your time that is up to you to decide, no need to call the integrity of it into question.

The judges are Bebopdrums2424, Whalemusic360 and San76. Three of the most biased and lazy people on Dakka. They have no qualifications what so ever and will almost certainly choose their friends entries just because they can. Although they have been known to work for bribes from time to time, so if you have enough of what hey want then you may be able to buy their vote. They have no moral integrity what so ever and this competition is a complete farce.
Or.... What Whalemusic said.

Nope.
They are the judges because no one else accepted.

Like any serious competition, the only thing that matters is "who will pay the most ?".

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having ag reat hiliday so far!
Just to clarify, and i apologize for not making this clearer, a few contestants expressed desire to do w/o the kit. Since the spirit of the contest is to make a featureless mini exciting, i figured that they are only making it even more a challenge. And with out the kit being there they will lose out on the 5 point possibilty on it.
With so many restrictions already in place, i wanted to encourage people to join up rather than deny every question.
Hope thats cool with you guys.
Any questions feel free to pm me. Thanks!!

Hi all,
Just finished the camo pattern on my guardsman. I think i fethed up... I was going for an urban camo type theme, when i decided to use brown instead of dark grey, and a wash of sepia. Now I think it looks a little too brown-y. I'm going to roll with it and see where it takes me (I can always submit another guardsman with my intended scheme )

Not to be combative, but wasn't the initial point of this competition to be purely on painting the same canvas (so to speak) of a Cadian using as close to the exact same parts? Points for basing (people can get pretty extravagant) and now photography (aka nothing to do with the actual painting) both seem a little off-task.
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
The basing is minute and was agreed on by the judges pre-comp. The reason is that we wanted people to have as much room as possible to create a character out of a basic model. The restrictions on the model itself are very tight as is, and i was convinced to allow a little bit of creativity on the base. And painting is included in that judgeing category. You can get a total of 15 points to your score for the base, compared to 60 for painting.
The photo idea was simply because we want to encourage people to take clear photos of their entries so judging can be fair. Only a total of 5 points there.
I do see your point, if others have issue with it i have no problem at all taking it off the rubric. Again its simply to encourage presenting their work in the best light possible. The judging rubric is very very heavily dominated by painting categories.
My initial idea for this comp was very strict but its hard to get people to follow such a tight ideal.

Zambro I like your camo. It looks like a winter camo. Kind of snowstormy. Can't see the brown you're talking about though.
Nash that lava is bonza. It looks just right. The little lava bubble is a great touch too.
B, my man is done, just gotta take pics of him. I'll get him up later for you.

Do most people paint their guardsmen partially-assembled? I typically assemble them fully, but perhaps I am doing it wrong.

brendan wrote:Do most people paint their guardsmen partially-assembled? I typically assemble them fully, but perhaps I am doing it wrong.
There is no 'wrong' way to do it. It comes down to personal preference
Personally, i like partially assembling the models so i can paint all of the hard to reach areas. Usually the lasgun covers the chest / stomach area on a guardsman and makes it tough to reach.
51769
Post by: Snrub
When I paint mine I make up the body and attach the left arm. Then paint up the the right arm separately. It allows better access to the torso and backside of the gun.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
In this case only had a right gun arm seperate from body. I painted them seperately , just as you guys say, so you can paint all the hard to reach bits. You can either paint it fully or at least block in the bits you will never get to once it's assembled.
And so here is my entry, wish I could do better, but will see if I have time for a second entry.
Good luck everyone, the entries I have seen so far are outstanding, so this looks like being a brilliant competition. (I do not include mine in this.)

Hey bebop, does the figure need to be on a standard base? I'm just thinking since I don't have guard... being able to do an objective marker on a 40mm base would actually allow me to use the piece when complete.

Don't bother Gits, you can't even paint anyway...
I started my entry yesterday, with a really nice color scheme. ^^
And I added that ugly belt kit on the model even if I dislike it, so I can claim the points for it.
Let's go !
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Don't forget guys, you can do two entries. The second one might go over better in the peoples choice, or may catch an extra point or two if it strikes a cord with the judges.
Mostly I just like seeing the unique looking guardsmen.

Post by: bebopdrums2424
LOL. daYYYYYYYYYYYYYYMMMMM Gits, i wouldnt take that. Minus is talking smack. The competition is heating up!
Guys yes you can enter two models, and there is still a lot of time. I may extend an extra week till the end of jan because alot of you are fresh from skalks tourney so i know alot of you guys had alot onyour plate to begin with. Also the holidays, also it took some time procuring bits. Anyways, none of you seem to be rushing so thats great.
Really excited to see these models come to fruition, I gotta say, each scheme is really different and thats enjoyment enough right there!

Minus that's good advice. And I appreciate your confiding in me but I'm simply one of 3 impartial judges. I urge you to share your wip here so everyone can be inspired and see what you're up to. At the very least avoid painting the same scheme as you by accident

Two boring old guardsmen - nothing special, just some commissarial target practice.
After sending in my app I had a little rush of inspiration and did most of the basic painting (and a little freehand in the heat of the moment)
Primed (and still pretty dull)
and currently they look like so.
Finally figured out how to write 501st in roman numerals - might redo the one pad to fix that I...

But most of all, Nerdfest and I (and you) have very refined tastes and know what's beautiful.
Oh, and I finished painting my Cadian. Question is : should I add weathering on the armor plates ? Or should I keep all that pink immaculate ?

Thank you dudes. I agree with Bebop, every entry is worth it. You should see the figs I painted a few years ago... What matters is to have pleasure while painting, and try to push the limits a bit further each time. On this model for example I wanted to work on the leathers. It's something I have struggled to paint for years. >___< Enjoy painting. Take part to comps like this. And don't take it too serious. That's just a plastic toy after all. Keep the entries going. We want to see MORE Cadians. @ Damo : maybe try... a pink camo.

Tried something new for my by breaking my figure apart to paint it. I liked this method A LOT better since I could rotate the piece to any angle I needed.
I didn't take as many WIP shots because I was too focused on painting! It's close to finished in these pics. Once I see the pics I always find a million things I want to clean up. That's what I'll be doing over the next few days. I did paint the kit but I haven't glued it on yet. I'm still thinking about what color to paint the Aquilas and i'm not sold on the clover leafs... bebopdrums2424 wrote:An hour???????? What the hell am i doing wrong damo??? It took me 24 hours to paint that tundra guy:(
An hour is pretty fast.
I can do that for TT models, but only with batch painting and a well chosen color scheme. On a single model like that, only ONE hour is something I can only dream of, it sounds more like science-fiction to me.
hdbbstephen wrote:I picked up a brand-new 3/0 brush today, so I can get in close and clean this up.
Would you guess that my smaller brush is a 1 size one ?
nerdfest09 wrote:eyes? what? you need to actually paint eyes on mini's? you fools be crazy! I don't paint no eyes :-)
I generally don't. Only on single models that I paint for pleasure. But I hate painting eyes and on my "gaming" models I never paint them.
64081

I have a Micron technical pen that I have been using for "dotting the eyes", I am too nervous about diluting the paint correctly - it usually spreads out in the little groove at the bottom of the eyeball.

Saw this thread and thought....
I've got some 'plug n play' guardsmen somewhere....
I want to try some green and Brown paint recipes....
2 birds one stone!
Anyway, here they are (i'll try and get better daylight pics later today if I can)
Loyal Guardsmen:
White Undercoat and black wash ('greyscale')
Green: Knarloc Green and Agrax
Brown: Vallejo MC Leather Brown and Agrax
Skin: Elf Flesh and Flesh Wash
Silver: Leadbelcher and Black Wash
Black: Adeptus Grey and 2x Black Wash
Traitor Guard
Fur Brown Undercoat (Army Painter Spray)
Brown: Flesh Wash then Agrax Wash
Green: Gretchin Green then Flesh Wash and Agrax Wash
Flesh: Ushabti Bone, Purple Wash then Agrax Wash
Rust: Orange stipple, leadbelcher drybrush, Agrax wash
Looks a bit complex when written down but they were dead quick to paint!

Hey B did you get the PM I sent you? Andy, your two guardsmen look fantastic. The slightly different colour schemes contrast nicely to one another.

Here is the work I accomplished yesterday:
The Face (sorry it's a little out of focus, I tried 3 different shots, the camera is focusing on the lasrifle). I am pleased with how the eyes turned out, on the first try, even!
Freehand on the shoulder pads (wow, this level of magnification really shows the little flaws, I may need a bigger, more powerful magnifying lens to paint under!)
This was much more difficult than I had expected, and definitely the reason we use decals!!
Also, after some comments in the competition thread I decided to make a "snow and ice" base. My original base idea was to build a piece of hull decking with an open hatch, but after the "winter gloves" comments above I decided the ice base would be more appropriate to the theme.
C&C welcome as always!

Thanks for the comments, I worked really hard on this one.
Here is the final version, from an upward angle to show the glacier-style base. I have never painted snow/ice before, but there were some pretty good examples in the gallery to learn from, I trust I did them justice.
All five pics are in my Gallery under the tag " Bebop IG challenge final". C&C welcome.
Good luck to everybody still painting away!

Nice entries. I wonder how many models will enter this contest.
Poor judges, I don't envy you. It will take you ages to rate each paintjob.
I like Cam's second guard. He is as sober as mine. Perfect scheme for a party at the nightclub.

Quick question, if someone paints two amazing guardsmen models (let's use weetyskemian44 as an example) would they be eligible for two awards? I only plan on painting one guardsmen, so I wouldn't be too keen on seeing the first and second place trophies going to the same person. Spread that love around!

Who cares about the prizes ?
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
Oaka, of course if you can only win one award., we will be fair and just in that case...im sure we can all agree on that
however, im not sure whether or not the 1 - 3 winner should be excluded from the Best Paint Scheme Award
thoughts?

Post by: Camkierhi
Given that everyone has the opportunity to give in up to 2 entries and that all can be as silly as they like, and given that I personally am well out of the running here, I see it as the entries are all separate and judged individually, and as such can win 1st and 2nd and best paint scheme, if their entries deserve such recognition. I also see this being very unlikely to happen given the brilliant work so many people are handing in. Weety's are gobsmacking work, but others are brilliant too, and we have other people who will no doubt put in excellent work. The judges are going to have a very hard time of it I am afraid. But I think it's a bit tight that (for example only) Weety's second model gets dropped because the first one judged gets a prize. We all have the chance of 2 entries, I certainly want both of mine judged, and would enjoy having feedback and critique on both.
Just my two cents. Please feel free to ignore me as I have nothing to do with the running of this most excellent contest.

Hey guys when is the deadline for the competition now? I'm still waiting to get my guy in the post, thanks!
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Well, weety actually used two significantly different styles, so that is pretty cool, but lets say Minus threw another guy in what was lime green and yellow, using the same styles as the first, etc. Based on the juding criteria, they are likely to score very similarly, if not the same. If his identically scoring models ended up in first and second, is that really fair for the other 20 people (or whatever)? As a judge, do I have to make up some reasons not to judge them the same, or should I stay blind to who painted them? I'd say you can get one of the top three based on your better scoring model, but any and all are open for the best paint. I'll still score each model, and I'd be happy to give feedback on anyone that wants it. But assuming Bebop runs a second lap, we don't want people discouraged by assuming that one 2 people are going to win all 4 places.

I have been involved as a volunteer at several performing arts competitions (opening doors, mostly) and it was customary to have some awards that would be given to people who did well but didn't place in 1st, 2nd or 3rd - the one time this was not done drew a little bit of resentment because one pianist got several awards (including 1st place)...
In light of that I think that treating it like as a stand alone award would be best.
Just my two bits, thats all, by the way guys everything looks great.

Post by: carlos13th
One fair way to do it may be to allow people to do two entries and their lowest scoring model of the two is not counted in the running for a prize.
That way no one would take first and second place for example but would get feedback on both models none the less.
50760
Post by: Minus
If I were part of the jury, I would do as Cam says. I would judge each entry individually.
It's a competition about the best painted model, not the best painter. If someone here is able to paint both best guards, plus creating the best color scheme... well he should be a top notch painter and deserve it, given the pretty high level of entries 'til now.
That's quite unlikely to happen, I'd say.
That said, imagine I'd enter 2 guards, win all the prizes. I would be REALLY happy of that because that would mean that judges love my work.
But I would only keep one prize, and offer the others to either the painter that comes right after me, or the guy (girl ?) that painted my favorite entry. Because I enter this comp' for fun and for glory. Not for the prizes.
Anyway... I don't have a second Cadian to paint, then if someone wins all the prizes... it won't be me.

This would avoid that someone gets first and second place. Even if I honestly think that it is unlikely to happen anyway.
As for the color scheme, it can be given to one of the best painted models or it may be given to another entry. It's possible that the best painted model also has the best color scheme. It's also likely that someone comes up with a very cool color scheme but is not the best painter in this comp' technically speaking. Both cases might happen. I don't see any problem with this.
But once again, Bepop this is your contest. Do what you want.

I'll leave the finer points of judging to the judges..... although it's sounding tricky at the moment! but i'm sure we'll sort it out all fair and just!

Finally....Did you like the crumpled envelope too?? Total class and style i know i know
EDIT: guys, check the OP, its finalized for updated rules regarding placement. but for the sake of saving you a trip, ill put it here:
If youve entered two models, your highest placed model will count towards the 1, 2, 3: The lowest will be disregarded.
For the color contest: I believe that every model will be allowed to enter that one. It seems nobody has a problem with this, and again, i will make it clear: THE COLOR CONTEST HAS NO BEARING ON PAINTING QUALITY. ITS SIMPLY ABOUT COLOR CHOICE. COLOR ONLY...!!!! understood? Good.

Post by: bebopdrums2424
Heres my thought: When the contest has officially ended, i will ask each entry to post his FINAL OFFICIAL ENTRY PICS FOR JUDGING. What this means, Cam, is that if you would like to do more than one, or redo an entry or what have you, id say this is acceptable. (JUDGES PLEASE CHIME IN HERE IF YOU FEEL DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THIS) However you can only officially submit two entries for judging. No one will stop you if you have new ideas that you want to try or a scheme that you just thought of and would rather enter than a previous entry. Im quite sure that no one would be upset if you wish to redo your entry. The constant is that for the FINAL entries for judging, there can only be two.
Honestly, im just enjoying seeing so many creative cadian schemes, that personally for my own enjoyment, id love to see many more...

Yes i like that.
Honestly, speaking about the future, i have quite a few pretty strange and awkward painting challenges in line, and i will even be entering them myself because i want to focus and learn new techniques and we'll help each other as a community grow to be stronger painters. I think these competitions are great incentive to push and inspire each other, so im just stoked to see everyone try new things and push themselves.
The awards will get old and dusty but sharpened skills are the true awards.

Hey folks
here's my entry, very much WIP at the moment, but I kinda wanted to see what the model would look like once I took a pic and uploaded it, my camera ain't the best and light levels here are pretty low (I live in rain soaked N.Ireland), think I need to play about with the settings as its not quite as pale as the pic suggests in real life!
Working pretty much 'til the end of the week but should be able to get him completed by sunday and then i'll post my front and back shots for the comp. There's some badass paint jobs so far, I don't expect to be in the running but this competition has given me the kick up the arse to break out my brushes again, so big thanks to you Bebop!
Happy painting y'all!

Here is some progress. Still a bit to go, need Platoon numbers and such...I'll be done in time. Not the boldest colors, I have a propensity for the drab. Muted brown/red (Vallejo hull red base) for armour plating and a military grey (Vallejo basalt grey) base for the uniform. Not sure that the colors are showing well in the photo.
I'll work on using a camera rather than my phone to improve picture quality.
And I too, love that fingerless glove idea.

Finished.
"The Courier" A specialist of the Cadian 122nd works his way through a snowy woodland in rebel territory.
*Designer's Notes: As I'd mentioned before, the inspiration for this model/scene were the winter camo outfits of German and Russian troopers in WWII, as well as photos from the battle of Ardennes. I debated adding a kind of actual camo pattern, but my research into the period suggested that across-the-board the winter suits were simply white. I opted for a bit more aggressive shading on the cloth parts of the suit to give it some interest while leaving the plates as cleanly white as was practical. I did a little research into the IG and found some photos of members of the 122nd in similar outfits and mention of a notable winter action in a major campaign (Winter Campaign on Vintock III in the 40th Millennium).
I had this idea that I wanted to experiment with snow effects which led in large part, to this project. I found an old tree armature that was a reject from our model RR, completely stripped & painted it as well as trying to make it look as much like an actual tree as possible (these things are flat when you get them). I used Army Painter's snow flock (which is the only one I could get my hands on). It's O.K., but in my opinion far too granular to be convincing as snow. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd appreciate them. The numbering on the shoulder pad is muted as not to ruin the stealth effect. This is an operative that relies on stealth and resourcefulness to complete his appointed tasks... so most of his equipment is designed to reflect that. I tried to mimic the style of number design that I'd seen in the official artwork for this unit.

Moar entries !
I love it.
It's funny how we come up with so many different schemes, although we all paint the same model.
Cam's last soldier looks like he is wearing a parade uniform, I like this idea. Reminds me a bit of Mordians.
Damo's guard has a classical color combination, and it works like wonder. Nice shade of green on the armour plates.
Gits, is that painted or just undercoated ?
No, just kidding. Lookks great. Choosing white as main color is a challenge, and you did pretty well my friend.
Nice tree too. The only thing that bothers me is the white base rim. It distracts too much from the model itself in my opinion.
Vikingchild, the fingerless gloves idea is just brilliant !
It makes me laugh when I think about how many entries bebop and friends will have to judge.
