Hi all,

Just finished the camo pattern on my guardsman. I think i fethed up... I was going for an urban camo type theme, when i decided to use brown instead of dark grey, and a wash of sepia. Now I think it looks a little too brown-y. I'm going to roll with it and see where it takes me (I can always submit another guardsman with my intended scheme )

Here he is:

I would appreciate any C&C

Hi Zambro, I like that color scheme, from the pic the armor plates look like a slate blue. It gives him a "Corporate Security" look.

Zambro: I like your camo scheme so don't fret about it mate

I managed to get my entry finished! I won't be doing a second one like I thought I would.

Thats a nice scheme there, Nash.

And thanks for the compliments on the camo. FYI, the armour plates aren't painted... they are based black, with zenithal highlighting

EDIT: I've been reading up on skalks comp, and there's a lot of good advice in terms of fine tuning a comp. I'm going to add this in to the main rubric. There WILL be PHOTO category to be judged. This will be based on cleanliness not so much your camera skills (I used my phone in the op pics) Of course if you have gimp (free photoshop available to Download) you'll be at an advantage, but you've a month (it took me 30 minutes) to learn how to do it, should you desire to. It's free and there is a great tut by ifalna here. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/467855.page
That level of photo presentation isn't expected but you'll be rewarded if you do it
Hope that's cool!!

BB

Not to be combative, but wasn't the initial point of this competition to be purely on painting the same canvas (so to speak) of a Cadian using as close to the exact same parts? Points for basing (people can get pretty extravagant) and now photography (aka nothing to do with the actual painting) both seem a little off-task.

The basing is minute and was agreed on by the judges pre-comp. The reason is that we wanted people to have as much room as possible to create a character out of a basic model. The restrictions on the model itself are very tight as is, and i was convinced to allow a little bit of creativity on the base. And painting is included in that judgeing category. You can get a total of 15 points to your score for the base, compared to 60 for painting.
The photo idea was simply because we want to encourage people to take clear photos of their entries so judging can be fair. Only a total of 5 points there.
I do see your point, if others have issue with it i have no problem at all taking it off the rubric. Again its simply to encourage presenting their work in the best light possible. The judging rubric is very very heavily dominated by painting categories.
My initial idea for this comp was very strict but its hard to get people to follow such a tight ideal.

Zambro I like your camo. It looks like a winter camo. Kind of snowstormy. Can't see the brown you're talking about though.

Nash that lava is bonza. It looks just right. The little lava bubble is a great touch too.

B, my man is done, just gotta take pics of him. I'll get him up later for you.

Do most people paint their guardsmen partially-assembled? I typically assemble them fully, but perhaps I am doing it wrong.

There is no 'wrong' way to do it. It comes down to personal preference

Personally, i like partially assembling the models so i can paint all of the hard to reach areas. Usually the lasgun covers the chest / stomach area on a guardsman and makes it tough to reach.

When I paint mine I make up the body and attach the left arm. Then paint up the the right arm separately. It allows better access to the torso and backside of the gun.

Not where I should be

In this case only had a right gun arm seperate from body. I painted them seperately , just as you guys say, so you can paint all the hard to reach bits. You can either paint it fully or at least block in the bits you will never get to once it's assembled.

And so here is my entry, wish I could do better, but will see if I have time for a second entry.

Spoiler:

Spoilered from embarrisment.

Good luck everyone, the entries I have seen so far are outstanding, so this looks like being a brilliant competition. (I do not include mine in this.)

Not bad at all Cam. The extra painted on detail adds a very nice touch.

Hey bebop, does the figure need to be on a standard base? I'm just thinking since I don't have guard... being able to do an objective marker on a 40mm base would actually allow me to use the piece when complete.

Don't bother Gits, you can't even paint anyway...

I started my entry yesterday, with a really nice color scheme. ^^
And I added that ugly belt kit on the model even if I dislike it, so I can claim the points for it.

Let's go !

Don't forget guys, you can do two entries. The second one might go over better in the peoples choice, or may catch an extra point or two if it strikes a cord with the judges.

Mostly I just like seeing the unique looking guardsmen.

LOL. daYYYYYYYYYYYYYYMMMMM Gits, i wouldnt take that. Minus is talking smack. The competition is heating up!

Guys yes you can enter two models, and there is still a lot of time. I may extend an extra week till the end of jan because alot of you are fresh from skalks tourney so i know alot of you guys had alot onyour plate to begin with. Also the holidays, also it took some time procuring bits. Anyways, none of you seem to be rushing so thats great.

Really excited to see these models come to fruition, I gotta say, each scheme is really different and thats enjoyment enough right there!
