It dosn't look like a cats "thingy". If you wanted a covenant coloured weapon for the gav platform, I think it needs to have some blue shaded into it, but that could be a problem since other parts of the platform are blue as well.

It's been awhile since I played halo and it's been a long night for me! I'll edit this later so it makes sense.

It's had for me to progress with these guys with any kind of frequency thanks to Melissa and my new job as houseman. But I paint every chance I get and once I get a couple of things to show you, I will. I also have a guardian I just finished with a muddy "swamp" looking thing, as in, "sand" basing almost to ankles, a heavy in wash over the base's dark flesh paintjob to give it some depth... and when it produced some gloss, I gave it a watered-down gloss to give it a wet, muddy look.

EDIT: I am also strongly considering foregoing the ammo belts on the Guardians. They just like very unsymmetrical compared to the rest of the model, and after three paint strippings, it's hard to get dried crud out of the details of the belts.

Here's a prototype of their flag, made on medical tape. It's not trimmed yet, and I put in on paper so that I could paint it on a flat surface, so you can see the brush marks on the paper. Not quite trimmed yet. I was going to do a sashimono and pennant style flag design, but even sashimono still looks a little off. No matter. I'll just make them non-permanent so that I can change them around when I feel like it.

I'm probably about a week away from being completely done with my guardian squad. After them, I've got my wraithlord, Farseer with warlock bodyguard, and Dire Avengers. So, I'm getting there. It's just taking a crapload longer than Necrons ever did. I'm almost done with Fulgrim from the Horus Heresy series, and it's the first time I've read of the Eldar in a novel. Eldrad Ulthran is a secondary (but not tertiary) character thus far. But the traitor Fulgrim virus bombs a sector's worth of maiden worlds. Such a... weird book. Such depictions of debauchery and excess always make me feel odd. That kind of... masochistic stuff always made me queasy. After that I have D&D's The Rod of Seven Parts, George Orwell's 1984, and Mary Shelby's Frankenstien. Oh! And Carl Sagan's Contact.

My girl found a beat-up wooden white desk in a TJ Maxx for $50 so I sprung on it and now have a dedicated "beat to hell" modeling table, and the bonus is that it's white so hopefully pics on it come out better.

I haven't heard much from the other guys. Probably because of Christmas season. Kehrer mostly has replied... but both are bad about answering their phones.

I'm still scavenging for people to play the game with in Columbia, South Carolina. I've got room in my man-cave for a table (barely) and room in my garage as well. But until I find constant game source, I'm not going to shell out for a table.

Well, that's about it for now. I'll definitely post pics when this squad is done. And no, I haven't changed my paint scheme again! I'm going with this all the way. Wraithbone constructs like the Wraithlord, though, might be a different story...

EDIT: Oh yeah! I've converted my standard from Sashimono style to Pennant. I think it's much better.

Well, everyone I knew kind of came together from the same company and nerdy guys who kindof had a mild interest in it without buying... but once enough of us came together it exploded. It seemed a more appealing option to some than D&D. If I were you I would target the modelers or the videogame fans and propose it to them. GW ships to Iraq fairly quick and without special shipping. Just make sure you don't screw up your mailing dress like some did. You've got to do a specific APO adress. And areosol paint cans won't ship there. But if I were you... I would make sure you have an unadulterated place where grunts won't knock over your models or swarm you with ridicule. We were lucky in that sense... basically, keep an eye open for opportunity but don't dump money into it before you get there or right after. Also, keep in mind that large, unpinned pewter minis will likely break during shipment back and forth from Iraq.

my guys know me enough. i am older than my joes and i realy dont care what alot of people think. if i build an army, i will probalby purchase from my local game shop owner and friend in savannah (morning star games, they have a facebook). he will ship directly to me, sure he would violate some "shipping" no nos such as spray cans. and i will surely use some foam for shipping back to the states.

D-U-N done! Well, mostly. I still have to finish the pennant and once that is done, varnish all of the models. But this is how they are going to look. Once I'm done with them, it's on to the Dire Avengers and Wraithlord.

This took forever. MUCH longer than I am used to doing with my Necrons, and working with the yellow was brutal. But I enjoyed it and began to really appreciate doing Eldar.

I've been so busy on my weekends that I have not been able to go up to my local store, Heroes & Dragons, to meet up with any of the tourneys there. Frankly, I've got a woman to hang out with on Saturdays and it's a great deal more fun than hanging out with a bunch of mouthbreathing strangers. But we'll see... I'll get an open Saturday one of these days.

Sorry for the long time inbetween the updates, but I have been working every day on these guys.

Update: After working a couple of days on a single dire avenger model and experimenting with colors, I'm not sure if going with a different style of colors will be a good idea. Ever time I try a new color on the helmet, it looks awful. I've tried looking for alternate color schemes on the internet but they're hard to find... especially good looking ones. If any of you guys have any advice on that, it would be awesome.

As I've probably indicated before, I don't like doing the paint-by-numbers method... I don't like copying the box unless it's particularly awesome (or would not make sense any other way). So I am working on my dire avengers, and those of you know know aspect warrior fluff know that even with different craftworlds, aspect warriors wear the some outfits as all the others. Technically. But of course I didn't want to do it that way. But how do I change up the colors, looking like they match with my guardians but still look different enough? This is what I came up with in collaboration with Melissa. Let me know what you guys think, but keep in mind it is not done. It's not washed and the back sash isn't complete, ect. This is more of a concept piece before I start assembly-line painting the rest. But I want to know if I am just grossly wrong with this decision in aesthetics.

EDIT: If it's that bad, I'll probably just end up painting them like the box.

Diesel, I really liked your blue-green-yellow paint scheme, but if it's hard to paint, then I understand. How someone could ever do an Imperial Fists or White Scars (yellow, and white) army is beyond me. The second scheme on the Dire Avengers (the above white and blue) looks just fine. It is a little simpler, but sometimes that's a good thing, and it is easier to see the details now (the lining on the gun, the pendants, jewls, and daggars, ect).

I had figured that the blue-green-yellow would stick with the main colors, I just figured aspect warriors are supposed to look quite different. Though, honestly, I could do it like I did the other guardians but I would need some way to make them easily stand out among the other troops... even if just so I can tell who they are. Any suggestions if I were to do that? Because I think I may try doing another in the blue-green-yellow and see how it turns out.

EDIT: I'm going to try a new technique with the yellow as well. I bought some yellow enamel spray paint that I will go over with GW's yellow. Hopefully it will make it a bit smoother and quicker. 30 coats of yellow to get rid of the grey plastic color looks really lumpen and sloppy.

You could use an alternately colored helmet or backpack, or just paint the paint-brush-roman-thing on top a really bright color, or both alt. colored helmet and brightly colored brush head.

I wish it wasn't so blurry, dude. I'm probably going to go very close to original aspect scheme to avoid the tumultuous mindset of what works. I'll have a finished model in a few days.

I went to a local friendly gaming store with my necrons on Saturday, and won one of out three (though the win was against a seemingly inexperienced teenager). But I made money from the entry fee by winning the painting contest with a gift certificate prize!

Hey guys. I thought I'd give you a pic of my progress thus far.

I've been up to my nose in schoolwork now that my *new* full time job of being a student has started, so I don't have too much time to paint, but I thought you might enjoy a sneak peak.

The middle one is the only finished one. And I know that his forehead decal is messed up, but that will get fixed. The other two are done except for the bases and decals, but they are here to give you an idea of what they look like all over.

Let me know what you think.

Here's a pinning and magnetizing project I've been working on for swappable parts for a wraithlord. For those of you who don't know, wraithlords have a HUGE variety of options and if you just glue them together you're very much restricting yourself to WYSIWYG. So, the magnet holds the hand in place to this arm, and the pin keeps the hand from spinning around like a pinwheel. The pin is superglued to the hand, but free to be removed from the arm. So, we have a interchangeable hand. The only problem is painting that pin to not be an eyesore.

Well its good to see other military types playing this plastic crack addiction hobby , we have just started a "club" at our WTB to aid some of us in socialization and CPT not to mention get us the hell out of our rooms, and its been pretty succesful, we are hoping to possible get it used as a worksite, so it can count a therapy outlet.
That being said in 2 weeks we have grown to a whopping 4 members, but more are expressing intrest, and a few of these guys I have to restrain from buying to many minis to quick , so yeah they have been bitten hard by the hammer bug.

So good luck, and keep us informed whats happening we will do the same, we have a 4day coming up and its going to be terrain building time .

I just wanted to put this out there without it becoming a big deal. Posts like the one near the top of this page, since removed by a moderator, have happened before on this thread and will happen again. Any thread this big will get trolls. And anything to do with anything vaguely resembling the American military will receive derogatory comments from arm-chair activists who fail to see three-dimensionally.

If this happens, it can be really insulting to guys like some of us who, whether they agree with the war or not, have lost years of their lives and their friends in the military. I can understand an angry reaction. But do me a favor...

Next time something like this happens, please do not validate their actions with an angry response. Or any response. Inform a moderator, or PM me to do it. They are usually very quick about such things.

Hey E I know you were looking for a way to get a decent company guidon/standard for your IG and here's a dakka article that might help you out. If you don't like the one you have with your standard model, I would remove it and pocket-drill a hole in the hand, boring out a spot for the guidon bearer to hold a brass rod, similar to how I did with the guardians.

I'd just love to tear into some delicious Eldar and Guardsmen with my Chaos Marines I'll post some pics of them once I get home from my TDY and have access to my desktop.

Diesel, if you have any questions about Eldar, let me know, I've got an Eldar army and can tell you what works and what doesn't. I will tell you right now to stock up on Fire Prisms. Those things are AMAZING.

This is the Nork model.Granted his cybernetic eye is on the wrong side but I don`t mind.It was actually kinda easy to do ,but one of the funnest mods I have done yet.His chest plates are made out of ork shoulder pads,I just bent and cut them. The spikes on his shoulder are from orc nobs I think. His shoulder plates are terminator plates, but I took an extra aquilla I had and cut it in half then put each half on a opposite sides. His knee pads are just carved scrap plastic.I painted the metal plate things in his head. And to make the blood shiny to look kinda wet,I used water effects.Another model I`m proud of.well let me know what you think.I am working so dang hard to complete my armie`s paintjob, and it feels like I am making lil to no progress.I might try to play a game this weekend. All you guys out there should post some pics we would like to see what everyone else is doin!

Any of you guys any good at web design? I bought my own domain and got a forum up but content manager stuff like Drupal or Geeklog to get my website set up without coding is turning into something so complex that I had might as well hand code it.

...actually, I just might. I mean, a content website is easy to code and I've got to hand code my Army List generator web form for school anyway.

Anyway, it's going to be largely based on 40K with other nerd hobbies sprinkled in with videos of wargame stuff, vlogs, ect. Maybe I can get E to finally do his Ork rap video as DJ Fico Fresh so that I can post it.

I'm not going to give the web address out yet, as there is no actual functioning site, and you have to directory navigate to the forums.

As for getting other military to play, it really wasn't that hard for us. Initially the only non-nerd that played was E, but as people saw how much fun we had, we went from three players to 9 or 10 in a handful of months. The best thing to do is to market it to the guys who play a lot of video games. Don't treat it like a nerd hobby or something like Dungeons and Dragons. Drink and smoke and turn it into something more like hanging out with the guys instead of something they will probably imagine at first... like LARPing. *shudder*

yeah thats how we do it here minus the smoking and drinking ( to many meds ), and the great thing about having military in a game club is this for instance.
We had been playing now every weekend for the past 4, and in each game we were using magazines a books for terrain on a pool table , and in one weekend after making a plan to build some terrain, our group dropped around 1000.00 bucks on minis and terrain to enhance or gaming experiance, and not a single devisive word was spoken each guy pitched in and bought stuff, it went off smooth as silk.
Its not hard at all to get other military guys to play this game especially if they have been in a combat deployment....I mean after a person has gone to a hellhole and done things that 99% of our population can't even fathom, and returned to tell the tale, well I reckon we can play with toy soldiers without worrying if its "nerdy" or not....not many people would have the guts to come into a room of combat vets and make fun of what they were doing to help aleive their PTSD symptoms.

That being said its not for everyone, but I have not had a single negative response to our pastime, one of our club members wife, even paints his figs for him, and encourages him to get more stuff...lucky stiff

well time to charlie mike again and continue painting my Tau..

P.S. I will check around the unit and see if we have anybody with the web design skills you need.

Which battalion are you in, in Fort Rich? I was in 1-501 C co from 2005 to 2008. I hope they got rid of those ancient barracks by now. And I miss the Moose's Tooth. Good lord, I drank a lot in that time.

EDIT: Oh, right, WTB. Well, which infantry batallion were you in (I mean, attached to I guess... being 13F) before that?

3/509th B co. now in the wtb, but they treat us pretty well, and the barracks are ok, as much as a barracks can be I guess ( we have all lived in worse )

I don't know about a Moose tooth but we have a "Artic chill " here on base, but its not my scene, I am a old cantankerous type, so its playing games and this for me

Moose's Tooth out in anchorage. It's kinda like a mom & pop style Mellow Mushroom. The same people who own the Bear's Tooth theatre. Microbrews and crazy brick-oven pizza.

I remember when they built the arctic chill after the return from our first deployment. I guess they were trying to keep soldiers from drinking downtown and getting into trouble, which happened all the time anyway.

Got lost for a while but back with some advice/thoughts.

E: The Stencils I got are from Tamiya IIRC and come in 3, 2.5 and 2mm sizes, small enough for vehicles and shoulder/knee pads.

The stormies look nice but need some more shadow work. Have you washed them?.

Miguelsan, I don't think any guys from the old crew ever got into washing. I didn't myself until I first started with Eldar. Since then I am surprised I went without, but it is more of an investment in paint. Also, I would be nervous when washing colors that dark... knarloc green is too light.. he'd probably have to go with badab black, and you have to be careful with that...

I had heard that Tamiya paints are designed for Japanese models, which use a different type of plastic. Is that true? A friend says he does Gundam models or some kind of mechs and he uses Tamiya paints because the work better with them. But I initially had a bad impression because the didn't work well at all when combined with Games Workshop or Vallejo brand paints. That, and they are hard to mix and apply thin. But they are $1 each here, so it's much cheaper than GW.

I paint almost all of my figs with Tamiya paints, I love their color range and they work great for drybrushing, I use GW, Tamiya, vallejo, and even some paints I find at Michelles, in big squirt bottles ( I mainly use these for terrain ).

The only problem is that Tamiya does not mix at alll with GW of Vallejo, but other than that no problems. And for the shadows, Devlan Mud!!!!!!!! I use it as the default wash when in doubt.

I am doing magnetizing a lot more. This is to make use of as much of the included model as possible, and make things easier if you are playing a match where WYSIWYG is enforced.

Not seen this thread before but had to post something in here - Much respect to everyone serving, even if I'm not from the US, we're all part of the same team in the end and it must take a hell of a lot to be able to go out there and do what you do.

I read the first few pages then skipped to the current one - interesting to see that you dropped Necrons for Eldar, Diesel - I suppose you were bound to move on to a more competitive army sooner or later

I was wondering though, when you play your battles, do you think that your military training helps you or is 40K just so unrealistic that it makes no difference?

WH40K Hobby and New Players To The Fold - Through Iraq to the US! @ 2011/03/04 22:29:02

Post by: diesel7270

That and, honestly, most necrons did not test my painting skill. They were good to start out with but Eldar, as much as I whined about them, are REALLY fun and challenging to paint well.

The training, I would say, doesn't really. The kind of things you do in 40K is stuff you learn right off the bat - like always use available cover, don't stay too close together so explosives don't wipe you all out, use fire support to pin the enemy while your assaulting unit (not 40K melee) moves in, flank in an L-shape, using scout squads for recon and to hold territory. That kind of stuff is things we would normally do. E may have more insight on vehicles and their applications. I was a paratrooper - I didn't spend much time in vehicles when I was in the army.

But that's all stuff you would kindof figure out on your own in 40K... unless you just didn't try to be smart about it. Where the training makes a difference is it becomes much more complicated to control a 35 man element, fire support, air support and vehicles all at the same time over two radio channels. You try to keep everyone trained and instructed to do their job without supervision, but nothing is ever perfect and a battlefield is constantly changing. We as sergeants tend to worry about the individual, who has to know how to operate a weapon or a vehicle down to a science, know how to shoot differently to engage a cluster of enemies or a vehicle as opposed to an individual. Hand-Arm signals, ect.

WH40K Hobby and New Players To The Fold - Through Iraq to the US! @ 2011/03/05 18:37:42

Post by: Corvus

As a Chair Force Ranger, I have to know how to properly operate a computer, and how to yell at the Comm Squadron when said computer inevitably gets a BSOD.

So my training is next to worthless in 40K

Honestly in my experience, some things that are a given in the real world (use cover, fire and movement, etc) are not necessarily winning strategies in 40K. Careful movement from cover to cover with supporting fire to pin down the enemy is wasted when your units would much rather just scream KILL MAIM BURN and charge headlong into the enemy, who by the way is completely unphased by your supporting fire because he is Space Marines and passed all his armor saves.

For me it depends on the army I am using..

Orks: have almost no basis in normal real world tactics, no military rushes straight towards the enemy in lightly armored trucks , only to jump out and charge in with axes and pistols...at least no RL military so far .
But that said there is al little base of fire/manuver element involved, just in a very orky fasion.

IG: they have a bit more in common with our modern military combat tactics, but are hampered with a general fire and manuver sluggish-ness, although with the valkyrie/vendetta aircraft they can certainly simulate RL airmobile ops.

Tau: well for me beleive it or not they operate the closest to RL combat methods, fast and manuverable firepower, many units that support each other, powerful air assests , and even laser designators...and the fact that they avoid HTH aso makes it a easy fit for RL training and procedures.

But again this is a table top game, and what we do for real and the rules of this game do not have alot in common, the only advantage I see coming from a military background is a initial understanding that being out in the open is a bad thing

although the new to warhammer soldiers we have been recruiting into our club have all taken to the concept really rapidly, much more so than my civilian friends I introduced to the game before I joined up, so there may be something there.

Interesting stuff, obviously a real life battlefield can affect a person's mental state at any time, too - not just morale checks after CC like WH40K but it does sound like the instinct that RL soldiers have do help to some extent.

I had been reading up on some forums and places about Sun Tzu's Art of War in the hope that I would be able to glean some advantage to use in tabletop battles and other strategies like the refused flank etc etc. I suppose it can't hurt to look that stuff up but WH40K is only a game (must keep that in mind lol).

I do wonder, though, when flanking in an L shape, do you move forwards with the horizontal part of the L at the front and the vertical part towards the outer edge of the board or is it some other layout?

WH40K Hobby and New Players To The Fold - Through Iraq to the US! @ 2011/03/05 23:10:26

Post by: diesel7270

When I mentioned flanking in an L-shape, I was speaking of the U.S. Army's standard for reacting to contact for dismounted troops. You can't realistically flank on opposite sides without risking shooting friendlies.

On a board, I would say use the Scout Outflank rule from reserves if you can (that almost always messes with people), and other than that get some jetbikes or small fast skimmers to spend a turn or so getting around to isolated units that are no match for them. It's always better to keep your guys alive than it is to kill his - unless it's a individual case of a game winning point. So, you don't have to stand and take a beating just so you can get more shots off.

Example, Eldar Shining Spears turbo-boost to the opponent's side of the board in a corner where terrain makes them very difficult to get LOS on without actually diverting a path around to them. Then then next turn they move, and assault to pick off stragglers from your fire support elements. Or, better yet, the opponent knows they are there and avoids the area because of their lance weapons, therefore funneling units into your field of fire without losing a single jetbike.

I did it. I went out and bought a 4x8 MDF table and a spring grass mat from woodland scenics. Along with some trees that had the weird peeling white bark. Right now I'm assembling a great deal of eldar models to airbrush and then on to my two packages of fire dragons.

BTW, two 4x4 sheets of MDF and four extendable leg saw horses with the grass mat cost me $220... not much in these times, I suppose, but it was mostly the adjustable saw horses that cost me.

Or, run a Sepia Wash on the Brass/Bronze/Silver areas.

In theory and on paper, the Hellhound LOOKS like a helluva troop wrecker.. (lots of horde Nids and Orks locally).. so that may be their beef.

I'm working on a Eldar Heavy Weapons platform (last-gen style) that Melissa gave me for Christmas. I, unfotunately, kindof screwed up the face a little. And without stripping the whole thing, I have to stick with it. Because the whole reason It's like this in the first place is because I tried just stripping a little of the face when I was having issues with the eyes.

That being said, in the process I learned how to make my eyes better, so I suppose it was worth the lesson learned.

I will of course be posting pics of it once I finish. In addition, I'll be starting to take pics of the Sunday matches with my new-found local gaming group.

So after a few matches with my Eldar, my last one a decisive win, I think I am beginning to see the way Eldar work, and I think I like it...

Necrons were a pretty narrow army. Are. Are narrow. What I mean is, with one vehicle, no troop transports, and only a handful of unit an wargear options, you pretty much only do one thing with them: move, shoot, and stay out of assault. There is no orchestrated strategies. Well, not much. Your whole goal is to keep losses minimal, increase your likelihood of rezzing, and keep as many shots firing as possible. And thanks to lack of codex updates, try to keep your few anti-tank units alive as long as possible.

With Eldar, though they are physically weak against marines, have so many offensive and defensive options. Even with just one squad and their wargear. Initiative 5 on almost every unit means you already have a major advantage. Most have fleet but are still pretty handy with their catapults. Farseer powers are amazing.

So on an annihilation game, I prioritized easy kill points and severe threats. Everything else I just had to minimize wounds from. And for that, I went to ground a good amount. But with a firepike dropping a LR, a wraithlord keeping a small detatchment on the run,and out-of-sight guardians continually firing scatter lasers at guardsman squads... I kept surgically elminating one unit at a time, and every other unused unit I sent to better defenses rather than harass units for a wound or two.

I even kept a 50% strength fire dragon squad hidden at the very back of the board out of LOS the entire game, just to keep out an easy kill point. Another squad of fire dragons disembarked an immobilized wave serpent to melta a LR to death, took enough wounds to just leave the exarch left, and I just walked back and put him in the crippled wave serpent again just to prevent him from dying. And by the end of the game, they were both still alive.

All in all, it was immaculate. It wasn't about winning from sheer obliterating firepower. It was the extreme satisfaction from seeing a plan come together. Holy cow, that was fun.

It`s always nice when plans comes together right before your eyes. Now you have the option to do that and you kinda have an idea of what I see when I play. you are no longer held down by the tyranids who fight in hourds or the necrons who have no diversity in abilities and equipment.See I knew you would like eldar. So i need an opinion from you brother.Im thinking about changing my eldar paint scheme.Instead of the gold spartanish look. well i was watching "tron" and i think i can do up a paintjob like that.what do you think? be honest...

I haven't seen the sequel but the original would look good if you could do it right. If you want the glowing effect, you would need to learn how to start using a wet pallet for blending colors. I haven't done anything like that yet. I would say definitely give it a shot, but just try getting it down with one - that way you can tell if it will work out the way you want before you do all of them.

Wow ive just spent days popping back and foward reading this thread and its awesome!

I felt bad for you when the first army you ever picked was neckrons lol, a bit of a handycap.

Ive recently started orks and find their painting tedious at the best of times lol.

But i served in the british army and only left recently i just wish i met more gamers like you guys there.

Good luck with the future guys, i hope your necrons get a better codex next time lol.

It's been a whole since I've posted anything new, so here's a sneak preview to show you what I've been working on! None of these are done, but you can get a general idea of how it;s going to look.

Everything yellow I had to basecoat the bejesus out of them with an airbrush. Yellows and whites are very difficult colors to work with.

EDIT: I'm also going to try to get started again in taking photos of games I have with my group in South Carolina.

EDIT 2: Considering how huge this post is getting, and how many newcomers read the entirety of the thread, I have edited my very first post to introduce newcomers to it.

@ Diesel:
1) It's good that you've found a local group, and that you like your latest army. Perhaps it's time to update your sig?
2) The paintjob is good; it like the speckled effect on the blue and green. It does a good job of breaking up the larger spaces and being more appealing to the eyes. However, I have a beef with the yellow on the vehicle. It looks good on the wraithlord, but in my opinion, sticks out too much on an otherwise camouflage-y tank. Perhaps painting a red, or black, like danger indicators into the grooves would help? Then again, it's your army, and your decision. The yellow looks good elsewhere in your amry, and I like what I see.
EDIT: just read your new intro. Good job, and I'm glad to hear that you've found so much in this hobby. Keep it up!

@E:
A tron paintjob would be hard to pull off, but if you could, WOW! I think you could, just some general tips:
- You'll want to use a glossy black on the final coat, with a flat fluorescent ( or luminescent, if they make it for models...) for the neon colors, so that they armor seems shiny, with light seeping through.
-Read a few tutorials here on dakka on how to do directional lighting. While it would be impossible to do this on all your troops, it would look very good on a few centerpieces. Basically, directional lighting is the effect of using varying shades of paint to make something look like it's glowing, or giving off light. For example, it works great with torches, in the hands of fantasy models. Whatever you decide on, I look forward to seeing it.

Micahphone, when you mention danger indicators, do you mean black and yellow striping? Because I could paint the recessing in the air intake vents black to give it that affect without having to scrub the whole part.
EDIT: that's actually exactly what you meant, huh?

Otherwise, I do get your drift... yellow is an accent I decided I wanted primary on heavy energy weapons like starcannons and brightlances (you've seen those), but it is awfully bold on the air intakes. Perhaps black recesses with red vent slits? Hmmm....

My primary focus currently is getting the artillery team done that Melissa got me for Christmas. I try to prioritize one model so that I make an effort to get it done. Currently my biggest issue with the artillery platform is getting it mounted on the base. It's weight makes it very difficult to solidly dry, and it's wide body makes it easy for it to pry itself off in handling.

The striping effect is what I meant, yes. painting the recessing is exactly what I meant, and I'd suggest it. Load up the tip of your brush and put a dot at the top of the trench, and let it drip down, collecting it at the bottom. Repeat as needed, then lightly brush yellow over the top so that any black spillover is covered, while not getting any yellow into the trenches.

Camo is great, but the base needs something so that the camo has something to blend into. Perhaps a few tufts of grass, or you could give a wash of Devlan Mirac-er, Mud. You wouldn't wear arctic camo to the jungle, just as jungle camo probably wouldn't help out much in an urban wasteland-y theme. I personally like static grass; it has worked well for me.

I like your base and your color scheme. If the gun swivels and is interchangeable, then you sir and a wizard of modeling. The Eldar player's I've known have cursed their weapon platforms for being horrible hunks of metal.

Everything you've posted is of tabletop quality or above, but if you wanted to do some extra work on this gun platform, just for kicks, I would suggest messing around a little with directional lighting on the slits that are colored blue on the gun, as if they were glowing with energy, waiting to be released.

WH40K Hobby and New Players To The Fold - Through Iraq to the US! @ 2011/04/08 15:18:37

Post by: diesel7270

It wasn't hard. on the "neck" there are two studs: one at the bottom where it meets the platform, and one where it meets the weapon. I simply clipped and filed these down, and replaced them with 3x1mm magnets. Now, the front-heavy guns would sag, though stay attached. So I set them up for pinning, leaving a pin glued into each weapon, and a loose hole in the swivel for the pin to go into and be easily pulled back out to change weapons. This way, it would not slip around at the fulcrum of the magnets and sag at the front.

Directional lighting is something I have not tackled yet, and that's mostly because I think it is currently out of my leauge. What you see above is the extent of my painting knowledge, and it took two weeks to paint these.

One thing I am considering is barbed wire on the weapon base, just to use it because I already have it. Granted, it's not Eldar tech, but my guys almost always fight imperium.

Well, the model looks great, and if you can pin and magnetize that well, kudos to you. I'll try and find a barbed wire tutorial-there's a really good one here on dakka.

E! Check out a company called Verlinden Productions. They make all kinds of terrain and accessories for WW2 that would be great for your IG's urban wasteland. I just picked up a Nazi pillbox with a mounted "assault cannon" and the building is made out of...plaster? It's like limestone rock or whatever matrial.

EDIT AGAIN: It's actually ceramic.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Verlinden-1-35-German-WWII-Bunker-Gun-Section-2599-/180529154620

but they also have all kinds of awesome stuff, like cases of rations, bullet hole decals for glass, amm boxes, mortar shells, backs and packs for vehicle mounting, bulk shell casings, bricks, cobblestone, AA guns, mesh fences, barbed wire, and even modern warfare crap. I'm talking hundreds of products that are relatively cheap. They've got anything you can think of when it comes to WW2-Modern terrain, scenery and bvehicles. Here's a product listing from an online vendor:

I played against Witch Hinters with Eldar last night. I was doing great at dropping their vehicles, but their 10-sister bolter/heavy flamer squads just tore through my infantry. In the end he tabled me in turn 4.

I guess that's what I get for using footdar.

The D-Cannon is fantastic, though. I forgot it had two of those shots! Holy cow!

And fire dragons are excellent and tearing through armor, even without the 2D6 melta at half range.

EDIT: I would have taken pictures, but the table had hardly any terrain and was rather bland.

The farseer is looking sick, diesel. If you're up for a painting challenge, I would dare you to paint a simple pattern into the white trim of the kilt-thing that the farseer is wearing.

Also, this might just be the picture, but the helmet looks a little too bold to me. Perhaps a wash over the top?

I like what you've done with the blades, and (once again) if you're up for a challenge, check out this tutorial.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/301897.page

While you certainly don't need a complex lightning design like the pictures in there, a simpler one would still look amazing on a psyker.

I did wash the helmet. Perhaps I should wash it again. I also forgot to wash the arms, but that has been taken care of. Now I am working on the warlocks. But I tell you, if you are satisfied with the farseer, then I shall stay the course with the warlocks. I am going to go the same-ish route but with more green to make them match up with the craftworld scheme and to set them apart from the farseer on a table.

You are a very good painter; I am no where close to the work you can do. I like how the farseer turned out, I just think the helmet needs another wash or two (I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how much each wash will darken it), but other than that, he/she/it looks phenomenal! Stay the course, but always make HQ #1 the boldest, so go for the green tones on the warlocks.

EDIT: After taking a second look, the helmet is fine. Leave it be, and paint those warlocks.

I've posted in the Swap Shop thread, as well as among my friends in Facebook and such, a list of all of my old military gear, which is up for trade or sell. I've got a pile of stuff just sitting around and if I try to sell it to a surplus store, I'll get next to nothing.

A part of me wants to hold on to that stuff, but it takes up a tremendous amount of room and I have no use for it.

I'm down to trade for pretty much anything nerd-like, but am interested in 40K and WHFB.

(EDIT: I also can't get rid of my pieces of kevlar armor over e-bay. DoD suits tend to track and confiscate military body armor sold over commercial channels.)

I am going to do something a little different and make my warlocks have both the green helmets of the Guardians, and green robes. There will still be blue on the non-robe parts, but that isn't much.

The biggest reason is to set them apart from the Farseer. Players need to know who they are shooting at.

Diesel, for the 'cron video, consider throwing in some tips about the models too, as most people will probably start necrons for either the fluff or the models, unless they're in an isolated area where no veteran gamers will stop them.

As a side note, what are you studying?

Right now, I'm picking up mostly crap 100 level classes to get my GPA high enough to transfer to USC. My previous stint in college before I joined the army gave me a 2.16 GPA. And then I still have to go to another semester while I am applying for a new school, because if I don't, I don't get paid by the G.I. Bill. So at this point, I'm wasting my benefits, because all of my Gen-Eds are done.

I'm going for an Information Systems Technology B.S.

Yeah, it's hard packing all of the info I want to put in the videos into the 15 minute limit they give. I'll work it out, though. Can you be specific about what you would say about the models?

I'm about half done with another warlock. With both of the helmet and the cloak being green, it's hard to not think that it is far too dull or plain. But I'm going to keep going and post a pic when I'm done, to see what you guys think.

Graveyman, thanks for the support. This thread has either me or someone posting on it at least once every several days, so be sure to subscribe or check back every once in a while. And I'd encourage any military or vets to post their stuff (or any of the other regulars).

For the videos maybe give some tips on assembly, or your impressions on the models.

For example:
-"the immortals (I'm just making this up-I don't have any experience with necrons) are a decent kit, but make sure you don't mix up their arms. They look similar, but each set of arms matches up with only one torso."

-"The flayed ones are really annoying to put together, as their legs are very fragile. Have some greenstuff on hand to make extra bandages that will hold together their joints".

Anyway, I am open to criticism. Really. But please do tell me what it good, and what I should do more of.

Go for the craftworld colors. If you want him to stand out a bit, you could emphasize some of the minor colors, to show a pilot's uniform. the brown leather would clash too much with the vibrant colors of your models.

I thought I'd share a picture of how my Wave Serpent is coming together. Additionally, I am almost completely finished with my Farseer's warlock bodyguards.

Let me know what you think.

E has become a lot harder to get ahold of lately, and from my understanding, the work-load the guys have been under is huge. I would bug them about posting more stuff, but I don't know if we will hear from them again. It's been some time since E has posted, and Kehrer hardly ever has.

I am considering opening a request for any current or veteran soldiers to post their stuff, but I don't know how much of a floodgate that will open.

I'm done with the warlocks, and working heavily on my Wave Serpent. The cockpit is almost done, and afterwards, I'll start assembling parts probably today or tomorrow. Then onto my wraithlord.

I'm doing some custom Decals for my wave serpent. Including my Craftworld/Exodite rune. The idea is to have a different rune additionally on each troop carrier I have to designate the kind of troops in it. I.E., my fire-dragon carrier would have a name reflecting it, like "Deliverer of Suns" or something, and a fire rune below the craftworld rune. Getting my printer to do it properly on my decal sheets can be weird.

Anyhoo... I will hopefully have some additional pictures for you guys in a couple of days.

ANNOUNCEMENT: I haven't heard from E in a while, and Kehrer has never consistently submitted stuff. What I would like to do to share with you guys more stuff all the time (instead of just me showcasing my minis) is to invite any current military or veterans of any country to post their pics and such, with a particular interest in how it relates to their service. This way, I can get an open forum and discussion for military people to relate their stories. I know a few military people visit this thread often, and I would like them to join in, instead of this thread becoming "The Diesel7270 Show".

UPDATE: I should have a Wave Serpent pic to you in a day or two. It's pretty much done, except for sealing, and that's because I don't know if I want to stick with the decals that I have, or if I want to try again at painting that targeting reticule on the cockpit window. I "erased" my previous attempt because it just looked awful... it has to be very thin and even.

Additionally, I printed out some custom decals on Testor's decal sheets, and as soon as the decal touched water, the ink ran off in a pool. So, I'm trying to figure out how to solve that.

The speckling on the serpent turned out nicely, but those warlocks really take the cake! You did an excellent job with the green of the cloaks; it looks like they are ready to do battle on a sub-scorched field. The coloring/directional lighting/not sure what to call it but the highlights and dark portions of the green is just phenomenal. And the basing turned out quite nicely too. Keep it up! Sorry if I don't check dakka often, but I always enjoy your work.

It's good to hear from you E. I look forward to the updates of both Diesel and E. Sorry if I don't always comment, but I enjoy your work. Seeing as how the closest I am to being in the military is being an Eagle Scout, I don't think that I should be posting here. Nevertheless, keep up the nice work!

I'm trying to take my videos up a notch (or two) and I have my own webspace... I just have very VERY little experience in HTML. I would have used something like Yahoo Pagebuilder, but I think that's dismantled, now. Anybody know how to do that kind of stuff? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a bare-bones GUI. And not a "blog"... those cookie-cutter things are more trouble to customize than it is to become a blackbelt at HTML.

I've started a league, here. It works in seasons of 6 games with at least a week inbetween games. 2000 point pre-registered armies, and players pick their preferred 1500 points, knowing the gametype, opponent, and their opponent's 2000 point list beforehand. People here are pretty stoked. We're doing registration fees and prizes and everything.

Oh, and I've changed up some colors. Red is out. Check it out:

I intend to do the same tone and highlighting on the guardians as there is on the wraithlord, eventually. Until then, I've got all of the antennas and red gone.

Post by: micahaphone

I like how the solid yellow contrasts with the speckled blue & green of the wraithlord. And for your league, does that mean that you enter a 2000 point list, then for each battle, you only use 1500 points? That's a good idea.

WH40K Hobby and New Players To The Fold - Through Iraq to the US! @ 2011/06/26 13:54:47

Post by: diesel7270

Right. Every player's 2000 list (warhost) is published for every other player to see (all at the same time... so you can't build your master list knowing who's doing what). Then you know who you're going up against a week in advance. You pick 1500 points out of your 2000 list for the match, trying to anticipate the 1500 points out of your opponent's warhost that he/she will pick.

The main idea is, you know who's working with what 2000 point army and when you play them, but since everyone picks 1500 points out of that list, you won't know exactly what you're facing. Personally, I load up on enough spare wargear to make sure I can drop horde, MEQ, mech and infantry armies depending on my wargear selection.

It's 6 games total with at least a week's time inbetween each game. 4 of those matches have objectives. Instead of these games being a win/loss, you get combined points in the margin of victory you have in objectives and victory points. So, in a game with objectives, you can hold one less objective than your opponent, but still get more points because you destroyed so many of his units. But because it's a margin thing, you may not need much carnage... just keeping your guys alive and destroying a couple of units is all you need.

It is of course on my subscribed and will post I replies to other people and such, I'm just not going to keep thread necromancing to keep this thing open. If this seems like it will continue, I will just start a new thread based off my stuff solely, particularly the videos, now.

I just saw this thread right now actually and im gonna have to tell my Dad. Im 20 and he introduced me to 40k when back in 1999. He got into 40k in the Army when he was stationed in Germany back in the late 80's early 90's. A lot of similar things with his gaming group and yours. Actually really interesting.

Thanks for your service to the country and its great you guys found something to have fun and do while you guys were deployed over there,

What`s up everyone!

I`m glad you could join us. Alkaid where are you stationed? I see the kuwait flag on your post. Message me and let me know.

Welcome mxwllmdr! I hope you have looked over and enjoyed this thread, and continue to enjoy it over the next few months!

The Breakdown:
Ok so we are in kuwait and there will be some time gaps due to training. BUT! I have a new circle of players ome just getting started with their armies. Some starting secondary armies, and me well I am Going to build up a group of IG to play with here and when I back to the states, I will add them to my existing army. Then I will be ready for apocolypse! When all is said and done I should be sitting between 7000-8000 points. I cant wait.

I came to kuwait with no intent on playing warhammer due to our tight living area, and our even tighter training schedule. But wait, god said let there be free time, and there was free time, one player ordered a copy of the sixth edition rule book. Boom that was the start we all looked through it. I happen to aquire a pdf file of it and put it on my kindle. Then one of my buddies was said," lets play a kill team zombie campaign." And we are underway. I`ll get into the details about that later. Then came the greater idea of lets just play some regular games too. It seems like overnight everyone was onboard.

The Players:

We have Me- IG player currently have troop squads en route.

SPC. Corrales- He already owns a dark eldar army. He will be building a secondary army to use here that consist of space wolves. Corrales is a veteran player who understands the rules very well and I`m sure will be a force to be reckoned with.

SPC. Wells- Wells is ur tyranid player back in the states, but he has also decided to start a secondary army. He is ordering and building eldar. Finally a serious eldar player for our circle. Wells has and always has been a smart player and I would take him on my team anytime.

SPC. Reames is our NOOB! I have faith though. Smart guy who is more then interested in playing. He decided to play ultramarines. once he gets a few games in him and learns the rules i think hell be ok.

SPC. Tomsick- Our notorious dark angels player. What I gather from him is he will be doing exactly what I am. Building a force here to combine with his army when we get back to the states.

PFC. Marcove- One of the guys from our sister company. He plays chaos space marines.I have never played him. But I know he has been playing a long time also. HE has a few buddies in his company that are going to play too. From what I have heard one will be playing orcs, ans far as the otherone I have no idea.

And just like last deployment I am sure a few more will jumpon the band wagon!

ZOMBIE KILL TEAM:

OK, so I have not got all the zombie kill team details from corrales. But this is what I got so far. We will all be playing one individual IG piece. We will be playing against waves of zombies( warhammer fantasy undead). Our pieces will be allowed to level up and buy new weapons. Work together through mission to eventually escape off our diseased planet.

Its should be fun. Corrales recently made a dakka account, so you should see him posting soon. I`m sure he will lay down the storyline in detail. I am stoked to see how his plays out.

Hey awesome thread! Glad you guys got to play while deployed and that you are resurrecting this thread for another go. I will be sure to follow.

I am a civilian contractor (and Navy veteran) located in FOB Sharana Afghanistan. I figured I would get some mini's and start painting them to occupy myself during my downtime. I never thought people might actually play while being deployed. If anyone happens to be in Sharanna and reads this and wants to get some games going let me know. I have some half done stuff at home but I figured I will be starting a whole new army out here so I am open to some suggestions. I am leaning towards vanilla SM (boring I know but I have never done a vanilla SM force before) or IG (since I am around all this cool military gear and t soldiers).

Also thanks to all the soldiers. For those of you who have never been in the military you have no idea the living conditions these guy have and the danger they face everyday. So please give them their props and support your troops.

THE ARMS RACE IS ON:

Today our space wolves player had his models come in, and has half of a 10 man squad assembled.

I am currently ordering another troop squad and valkyrie.

Marcove is also ordering some stuff and once again I think this is going to bigger then it was intended. I am so down.

Please be patient but pictures will be soon to come. Production, production, production. The hardest part about building a gaming enviroment is is building..lol

Welcome to the forum fellas, i hope you enjoy and share you insight in to 40k and our circle. Thank you for your support. it s greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone! Corrales here. Time to finally respond to some of the recent posting.

Ho do you guys prime your miniatures since spray paint can't be shipped to APO's? I would love to be able to use an spray gun (I never used one before) but not sure how I would get the propellant.

Games workshop actually released a primer that can be found in a normal paint pot. Personally i like the spray primer better but the brush on primer works just fine. I believe it can be found in the Technical paints section of the paint selection. PM me if you have difficulties and ill link you the page.

As for the Zombie campaign, the idea begins on the planet armageddon after the second armageddon war. Below the equitorial jungle lies armageddon secundus. Ill post the actual preface in another post to follow. The idea is heavily based on an individual model having a complete back story as to how he found himself in the midst of destruction and what special skills and equipment have allowed him to survive this long and rise above the threat. All of these individuals have found themselves trapped in the main hive city with no choice but to band together to survive. I have taken the Warhammer fantasy character advancement chart found in the white dwarf issue on campaigning and adapted it to fit the 6th edition rules. We should launch this thing in the next couple weeks once i have all the character bio sheets in. I cant wait to get this underway and i am so excited to see how our benevolent heroes due amidst calamity.

If anyone else wants the sheets for what i have written, let me know and ill email them the Zombies! campaign.

End Transmission. Defeater out.

Spray guns are cool. They are quite the investment but well worth it. They paint just like a can of sray paint. give it a shot, plus they make painting terrain way easier. Most o the guy are brush priming their models. personally I never prime my IG. That said I have never had a problem with he paint sticking.

OK, so here is our battlefield! all the terrain we have been working has payed off. I made the bridge and the bunker. They are made out of cardboard from our mail. All of our roads to include the one on the bride is black duct tape with painted yellow lines. we have a few corners of building. Our noob SPC. Reames built a very impressive rundown highway ramp, I can`t wait to paint it. we have some hills made by Reames also. I was allowed to set up the table since I am neutral and not playing.

The game rules:

Game type- Big guns never tire.
Deployment zones- Vanguard

Warlord traits:

Corrales- Rune priest- Master of offense
Marcove- Daemon prince- Night attack

NOTE:See warhammer 40k rulebook 6th eddition to find these rules.

That's pretty cool. Would definitely pass the time on deployment. It's cool to see you guys making use of all the discarded crap to make terrain. MRE boxes, perhaps.

My figs would have never survived any of my deployments (I actually gave up 40K for most of my ten years as a Marine), but it's cool to see you guys finding a way to make life suck less.

US Vet here also. Played in the sandbox in OIF 1, up in Mosul while in 3rd Bd, 2nd ID.
I didnt play 40k back then but I do now. I to run IG and have a blast doing it. Congrats to you guys for keeping your sanity while over there by "getting away" from it all. I know it was hard for us. I had my D&D figures to paint while I was over there.
Your stuff looks good for what you have to use. Great job guys.

Devastator squad in bunker fires on remaining chaos troops and misses completly.

Space wolves tact squad, on the road spots chaos troops moving in the open, with the order of fire a highly concentrated volley of bolts pick apart the chaos marines leaving a bloody scene of body parts for whoever may find them. one survivor stands alone.

SPACE WOLVES END SHOOTING PHASE: END TURN 4

TURN #5

CHAOS MOVEMENT PHASE:

Against all odds this Chaos space marine finds himself alone. With all his comrades gone(" Worthless bastards"), he charges toward the enemy. Hatred is his only motive left. Glory will be found in the death of his foes or his own.He charges forward intent on dismembering every last space wolf, their rounds zip past him but he ignores their ill placed shots. In full sprint he reaches his enemies, so close to glory he can taste their blood. With a mighty swing he hacks through a space wolf, and the sound of tearing metal and ripping flesh is exactly what he imagined; pure, sensational. The other space wolves surround him, their blades are circling him like vultures, ready to send him to a hell of his own devising. As he feels the blade slide through his abdomen. flashes of demons, torment and darkness flash before his eyes...before the giant, armored forms of the emperors misguided children block out the dawn...

Alright takers we are still here don't worry. We are just in the middle of some hardcore training ; so we can kill and win wars for real. As soon as we finish this training we are going to go hard in the paint. People have been ordering and the armies are growing already. Me marcove and corrales played a game tonight. It wasnt documented because it was a spur of the moment game. But it was a relic game and it wound up being a tie between me and corrales. 2 victory point a piece.

Here is a quick overview/breakdown for those of you who care to read. I played 2 vet squads an company HQ unit and a vandetta and marcove played a demon prince a devestator squad a predator and a 5 man tactical squad corrales played two land speeders a devestator squad and 2 five man tacitcal squad and one ruin Priest. Marcove too the brunt of the attacks in the beginning I immobolized his predator turn one. He occupied.the area around the relic but did not take the relic. Corrales eventually killed the CSMs and moved to take the relic. I was kinda forced to sit back for most of the game and defend myself.by turn 4 we were all running pretty thin on Modelsbut I killed both the enemy warlord for two victory pints corrales drew first blood and killed my warlord for 2 victory point. On the last turn with marcove gone and corrales in control of the relic he was looking good for the win. BUT the deadly motivated guardsmen were in hot pursuit.corrales. had his last remaining scoring space wolf tucked under the ruiend highway overpass and he looked to be safe.with my very last move of the game I was able to move 2 out of my 4 remaining within line of site rapid fire range.4 shot killed the lastremaining marine. With n
oone in control of the relic we had to refer to victory points. So it ended a tie. But I'm proud of my guardsmen for not letting the hieratic take the emperors relic. TIE 2 TO 2.....

WE WILL BE BACK SOON. STAY TUNED .. AND POST SOME PICS FOR US TO SEE OF YOUR BATTLES AND MODELS.. L8ER. "E"

ATTENTION !!

Tonight we have a 1000 point game between space wolves and IG! "E" vs. "Corrales." We will have a battle report up later.

There has been alot of building going on lately. That is where most of our free time has gone. We havnt had a chance to play much, to training exercises and our slow mail system. Everyone`s models are stedily coming in and soon we will all be bulit up and ready to roll. SPC. Wells has most of his models in and built he is just waiting for troop squads. My current list looks like this. One company command squad, one platoon command squad, three troops squads to valkyries and a demolisher leman russ with interchangable guns. I am currently waiting on two more troop squads, a three peices heavy weapons set, and multiple leadership pieces. I bought the last chances to mix in with my troops and give my army some flavor. I have started painting them and they are turning out better than I thought. Here are some pics.

Just noticed this thread and I must say that this is some great stuff!
Myself being in a finnish army, I do believe that the military can indeed be a boring place once in a while, so awesome for you guys to have a great hobby to pass time with.
In here it's a bit different, we are training all the time and get home for almost every weekend, so I only have few days in a month to keep the projects going. But wargaming surely cheers this life up.

Thank you for sharing this story, and keep up the good work!

Space Wolf turn 1:
Movement: the land speeders cruise forward 18".
the SW drop a pod by the bunker at the corner of the table, and release a squad of snarling, bloodthirsty space marines right off the bat. ( not only can space wolves drop a pod on turn 1, they cannot scatter off the board. Squad released is designated #3.)
meanwhile, Squad #1 moves up 6", and Squad #2 moves into cover.
the space wolf devastators stay put, getting ready to unleash hell from the upper story of the building.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Space Wolf Shooting phase 1
the devastators open up on the guardsmen (IG squad 1), and manage to kill 2 of them.
meanwhile, the fustrated marines that just stepped out of the drop pod found that they were unable to get in line of sight of the hapless Imperial guard squad in the bunker, and out of range to shoot at IG squad 1.
the runepriest however, had different ideas. he used a phychic power( living lightning) to fry IG squad 1, killing 3 of them and forcing them to take a morale check. they fail it, and quite simply run away off the board. 1st blood to the space wolves.

Turn 2
SW movement 2
the space wolves roll for reserves, and drop yet another pod, directly in front of the imperial guardsmens firing line. the drop pod releases squad #4.
landspeeder #2 moves up to the bunker 12", while land speeder #1 moves onto the bridge.
Squad #1 moves up 6" , further past the wrecked freeway, while squad#2 moves out of the cover of the building by 6".
SW shooting 2
Landspeeder #2 shoots at the bunker with its melta, but fails to do anything substantial to it.
Landspeeder #1 takes aim at the Leman Russ, and it flat out misses. ( ironic, yes?)
the devastators once again take up arms, and shoot at the tank. the lascannon fails to hurt it.
the squad that just arrived takes aim at the earstwhile IG commander, CAPTAIN PLANET! he takes 1 wound, but remains standing.
the runepriest once again thinks hard, and hits the squad by the tank, inflicting 2 casualties.
Squad 1 runs 2" (needs more pt), and squad 3 runs 1".(needs pt).

IG movement 2
the vendetta moves in from reserves, and doesnt scatter at all.
Captain PLANET! moves closer to the tank.
the bunker squad moves closer to the windows to take shots at frivolous space marines.
squad 2 recieves orders.
IG shooting phase 2
the command squad attempts to bring down the speeder closest to them, and fails to do so. then, the vendetta takes shots at said landspeeder, and fails to hit it.( Accursed JINK!)
squad 2 shoots at sw squad 4, and manages to kill 1.
then, the leman russ templates 4 SM to death, and fires up the main gun. (punisher cannon) 20 shots later, the last spacemarine is reduced to holey deadness.

TURN 3
SW movement 3
Speeder 1 moves up behind the tank, trying to take advantage of 10 rear armor.
speeder 2 moves behind the bunker, to better cover.
squad 1 moves up 6", and squad 2 does the same.
Shooting 3
Speeder 2 shoots the bunker again with its melta, only this time the pesky skimmer destroys it. 4 IG die in the name of the emperor as the building collapses on them. the rest of the squad escapes the carnage.
Speeder1 takes a shot at the tank, and manages to glance it, while erickson sadly subtracts a hull point.
back at the other end of the table, the runepriest thinks far too hard about killing puny humans, and suffers a perils of the warp wound.
above him, the all but one of the devastators take aim at the punisher tank, yet miss completely.
one man in squad 2 attempts to shoot his plasma gun at the vendetta, but instead it blows up in his face, while also missing the vendetta. luckily, his handy dandy 3+ armor save rescues his space wolf butt.
the devastators that didnt shoot fire at the remains of the bunker squad, killing 2. The IG squad take a morale check but pass. squad 1 shoots at the squad by the tank, as well as the drop pod itself. they both miss.

IG movement 3
the squad by the tank moves onto the hill fully.
the lemann russ moves six inches.
the vendetta moves 6", drops a turret.
the bunker squad jumps into the waiting vendetta.
CAPTAIN PLANET! moves up to the landspeeder that has been polluting the atmosphere, with the intent to destroy the wretched thing.
IG SHOOTING 3
the vendetta finally puts an end to Landspeeder #2, by blowing it up. the ensueing explosion hits and kills 2 space marines from squad 3.
meanwhile, the tank nukes SW squad 1, leaving two plasma scorched bodies of Russes finest. with that, its dangerous punisher cannon of 20 dice death fires up again, along with the sponson lascannon. a couple marines survive...
then, CAPTAIN PLANET! and the squad on the hill, with no weapons strong enough to penetrate landspeeder armor, assault it with grenades.(frag) magically, the landspeeder takes a glancing hit.

TURN 4
SW MOVEMENT 4
Squad 3 moves around the corner of the bunker.
squad 2 moves into cover
landspeeder 1 moves behind the tank again.
SW SHOOTING 4
Squad 3 shoots at the vendetta, but miss.
the last landspeeder splodes the tank.
the devastator squad opens up on the hard-to-hit vendetta, not only destroying it, but blowing it to smithereens. some how, survivors stumble out of the wreckage...
meanwhile, the runepriest lightnings CAPTAIN PLANET!'s squad, killing 1 unfortunate man.
the remaining sw squads open fire on the two survivors of the vendetta explosion, and kill them both with wolfish grins on they're faces.

IG movement, shooting, assault
with no other options available, E has to make a hard choice.
CAPTAIN PLANET! moves with his squad to once again assault the landspeeder.
with only some luck on his side, the defender of nature tosses a grenade into the cockpit. it explodes moments later, to the detriment of 1 unfortunate squadmember, who was cooked alive in the blast.

TURN 5: THE BACONING
with only two men left in the squad, captain planet surveyed the carnage. dead humans and space marines lay everywhere on in the ash choked battlefield. tank and vehicle parts littered this once beautiful monotonous landscape. even through tear blurred eyes, the green haired commander saw the desperation on his mens faces. a part of him wanted to tell them to run, yet this planet could use some fertilizer. he continued to watch as three space marine squads crept forward. readying his weapon, the defender of nature waited for them to make a move. Then, he smelled ozone, and tried to move out of the way.out of nowwhere, a streak of lighting lashed out at the him and his squad. unable to dodge in time, the poor men polluted the atmosphere with smoke coming off their blackened, crispy bodies. out of breath and out of time, Captain Planet only saw the space marine in the distance heft a large, atmosphere frying lasercannon, before the world went mercifully black and pollution free...
meanwhile, space wolves everywhere dance on his burned, lazzed body!

so this was the first battle report I have ever done by myself.while time consuming and tedious, I did have fun reliving that game, remembering all the whacky stuff that happened.
in hind sight, I dont think corrales could have played that game any better. with 1000 pts towards his army, he was able to play 4 squads of space marines, with terminator leadership. thats pretty awesome. I was also suprised at how long his landspeeders survived. I guess flyers and skimmers got a huge boost in 6th edition.

on ericksons part, I think he did the best that he could with only 1000 pts to work with. he also mentioned that giving his squads melta bombs would have been a huge help. personally, his best piece in that battle had to be the leman russ. if he had made it an executioner instead of a punisher, I think he would have been nuking space marines left and right with it. from what I remember playing against him back in the rear, this was not the set up he perfected or was used to. with a little time and some better planning, I think erickson could be very dangerous with IG; I believe that his normal combination of plasma volleys, artillery and lascannon shots would pose too many threats to deal with.

In the meantime, I've got eldar on the way. due to mailing constraints and random luck, I have everything I need to play my army with the exception of two troop squads. heres what Im rocking thus far:
1 falcon w/ bright lance and pulse laser
1 fire prism
1 wave serpent with twin linked bright lance
1 farseer w/ spear, guide and mindwar powers
4 dark reapers w/ crack shot and exarch
3 wraithguard w/ 1 warlock attached to the squad.

hopefully, I will get these soon, to round out my army at 1500 points:
1 falcon with starcannons and bright lance
1 wave serpent
5 rangers
10 guardians with a d-cannon heavy weapon and bright lances.
5 fire dragons
should be gravy....

Quinn has chosen chaos demons as his army and from what I have read in the codex they are pretty amazing. Good Job on the batrep wells . Our tiny living space has been packed with guys modeling and gaming. We are also putting together a map campaign in which the top two armies will receive $100 dollar gift certificates. One from forgeworld one from GW. The #1army gets first choice. I never thought gaming while deployed would blow up like it has.we will be posting more pictures as models get painted and games get played. So stay tuned. Hey everyone - deploying in a few months and looking to use the time over there to paint up an Army (I mean, besides the gym and movies we all know there is nothing else to do )

Hate to pimp it, but I have a thread looking for cool Army theme ideas so I can buy everything, build and convert as required, before heading over so I only need to paint while I am there.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/480784.page#4844922

Any suggestions would be awesome. Otherwise, looking forward to being a part of the Thread! Cheers

Ok Dakka We are back in the United States again, and it is good to be home.. Our deployment in Kuwait Was supposed to be chill ,it turned out to be extremely busy , and our internet was to terrible to support the forum. But we saved alot of pictures and video. I am now in my new apartment with very good internet. My circle of players and me, are all on block leave right now. We managed to sneak in a game before everyone home. So much has happened since our last post!...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Spc. Reames decided to play gray knights instead of regular space marines..he now has a decent size gray knights army. He also acquired a resigning players ork army about 1200 points. And to top the cake he still has over 2000 points of space marines.

Spc. Corrales has a large space wolf drop pod force. well balanced and capable of beating anyone..I believe he said the force was complete and he is thinking about starting another army.

Spc. Wells impressed me the most. he said he was going to buy a few eldar things.. Instead he now has over 3000 point of eldar and waiting for the 6th eddition codex before he buys more. I`ve seen him overcome the difficulties of playing eldar and refine his skills.I know that when they get updated he`ll be a force to be reckoned with. In addition wells was our nid player. He already had 3000 points of nids and aqquired a resigning players nids and has almost as many nids as I have IG.

Spc. Aguayo Is our sisters of battle player. He is the guy who said he wanted to watch us play and he did`nt want to spend the money...LMAO! yeah right, He Bought the sisters of battle army and it is worth way more then I would ever spend,BUT they are not to be taken lightly. He was more then successful with the sisters, and put the Ass whoopin on a lot of us..His force is well balanced in shooting, melee and armor..very tough, and very capable. He has started a tau army..

Spc. Marcove Has Chaos space marines, THEY ARE MEAN in melee. He has an large of uknown amount of points between what he aquired in kuwait and what he already had. And with the 6th eddition update, they got me worried..

Spc. Wideman Is my fellow IG Player His force in Kuwait was Huge. mostly cosisting of ARMOR, one would think he would do very well..But wideman had a very very rough time while we were deployed. He is my friend but to be honest I`ll say he suffered 80-90% losses. But a new fire burns in him. He combined his forces from Kuwait and now here and I know he will turn the tide and get some wins..He owns the largest Imperial guard armor force out of anyone I have ever met.

Sgt. Gilley stills has a big force of Necrons and is continuing to increase his number. I STILL OWE YOU FOR THAT ONE GAME SERGEANT!

RESIGNING PLAYERS: Unfortunately There will always be players that will play on the deployment then stop before you return home, for their own personnel reasons. But I would like to thank you for playing, and it was a lot of fun and maybe you`ll find your way back to the circle..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As for me ,I`m Still playing strong..And I`ll always stay loyal to the imperial guard! There is a certain Honor in playing imperial guard. You have the means to fight back , but you also have the human chance of getting blown out of the water..No Over powered, and not to under powered. an army of mortal men fighting the nightmares of the 41st millenium..Gotta love it....

Before we deployed I had been working on perfecting an air assault tactic with valkyries and veteran guardsmen. and that was still when valkyries were skimmers..And the emperor heard my prayers and answered..6th addition hit and boom! 5 five valkyries are now flyers! so I got some more... Now I have 8 valkyries . I have also bluprinted and tested my air assault and it has been very very successful. currently have over 8000 points of IG .. Me and the guys have been talking and we think it might be time to get into apocolypse..Im Excited..

So I had a computer crash while we were deployed , it had all my pictures on it but Spc.Aguayo has duplicates.. in the mean time I have a few projects to show you.. First off , I wanted on Vandetta, Piloted by an ACE.. So the vandetta had to be different then all my others..I looked at some world war 2 paint jobs and this is what i came up with...( This is 90% complete)

Well I had never seen this thread, so I thought I'd pop my head in.

Currently in Afghanistan, RC South. Unfortunately, I'm the only "gamer" here on my COP, so I build models in my tiny whack shack, and the only talk of 40K or mini-gaming at all is through some of my friends back home, on facebook.

If you're on Apache or at KAF give me a holler, maybe we can link up sometime for some excellent chow at the DFAC, and we can talk 40K.

There once was a guardsman unlike the rest..he was capable of any mission passed to him..he was elite, he was a killer , he was a legend..he was Guardsman Marbo.. Marbo was assigned to my unit..The lucky 13th on various occasions..I praise his courage and efficiency .. But He was replaced..The replacement is a perfect soldier..Built from scratch starting with his DNA, trained from a child , cloned again and again over thosands of years..He serves the emperor and the lucky 13th..never faltering..He has been successful since his arrival to my unit..SOLID SNAKE!

Be safe over there brother..and welcome to the thread..This is a military friendly thread so give shout outs and game invites as much as you want..and feel free to post pics of your army..It don`t take much to build a circle..it starts by displaying your army and not being embarrassed over your models..I`ve been called a nerd.. warhammer is not a nerd game it`s a war game that requires a brain..But anyways..boost the game, and the gamers will come..they will come.. If you run into a CPT Upton-Robbins tell him "E" said what up..

I leave my models on display, and a few have inquired about it, but nobody has shown interest. I live on a small COP/FOB with very few Americans(most are Romanians). I picked this hobby up from a team leader from my last platoon, so my PSG, him and I would get together regularly and play. My platoon sergeant used to ask if I wanted to play a game. I'd tell him that I can't due to the patrol the next day, so he'd turn to my PL and tell him to send 4th squad or something. My squad loved me for that, squad leader would send me off to the PSG's hut to ask him to game so we could have a day off. It was pretty entertaining. Our internet sucks(obviously) and I'm having problems getting to my photobucket. I'll try again tomorrow and post up some of my work while I've been here in the ghan.

6th came out about 2 months before I left for the ghan, so I got to play a few games. I have about 1500 points of BT at home that I was playing with.

I started the Ultramarines army as a project while I was here. Heres the link to my P&M Blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/503589.page. I have nothing playable here right now, so I've just been taking time to accomplish projects I want for when I get home. I have another tactical squad in the works, and a devastator squad that I'm still working on. Unfortunately, due to my time getting shorter and shorter here, I have stopped painting and have focused on building so I can get them home in a figure case, then all I have to do is paint when I get home.

Sorry, my internet took a dump, and we were out for almost 3 days. I know, imagine that, no internet for 3 days. I got a lot of building done though! I'll post of some pictures here in a while.

I'm actually national guard, based out of Arizona. I'm in the 1/158th Infantry(thus the name), which is part of the 29th Infantry Brigade out of Hawaii.

Besides my BT and my UM(and various Blood Angel stuff because I like their models, but don't have an organized army), I also have a rather large(used to have larger) collection of Imperial Guard.

I have about 200+ infantry, probably 10 cadian snipers, 13 meltagunners, 27 weapons teams, 2 baneblades, 3 leman russ tanks(used to have 6, along with 3 basilisks), 1 vendetta, 2 valks, currently 1 chimera(used to have 10 or so, including one kitbashed to look like an M2A2 Bradley), and a couple other various models. TBH most of it resides unpainted because Cadians in large numbers are a PITA to complete. I lost interest in playing them because it seemed I needed fliers, vets, and lots of meltaguns to win the game. That totally isn't my playstyle. I always did pretty well, but rarely pulled off a victory.

Next army project is Tau. I've been a longtime fan, and it was my first army. They lacked what was needed to be somewhat successful, though I won a few games. I am trying to stick with themed armies that I can only find layouts for, like the 2nd Company UM, a Tau Hunter Cadre, and I plan to revamp the IG army I have using some of the layouts from the Apoc book regarding cadian infantry regiments. Soooo much to do when I get home.

BTW the models look fantastic man!

E here!
Currently converting one of my broken down Valkyries into a vulture gunship! For the blade housing I used a heavy weapons teams base. The intake blades are made of cardboard I'm going to varnish them before I paint them to reinforce their strength. I cut the whole Valkyrie troop compartment in half and transformed it into a thinner fuselage .The extension of the engine house is a plastic cup(the clear part). I glued some bits to my home made engine housing and it looks pretty good. I crammed the gaps with green stuff and smoothed it out. I also molded green stuff in certain areas to try to replicate the picture I was looking at.. I am currently molding an entire tail section out green stuff I'll post pics as I go..that's it for now ..

I updated my post from my P&M blog, but I'll post em here to:

E, I've got a little over 2 months left, and the last 2 or 3 weeks of that is logistical moving, so I'm out of time virtually.

I have further plans after I finish this project as far as my space marines go. I bought all the finecast stuff I needed, along with a case to get this stuff home. The finecast will meet me at home. I am planning on Calgar and crew transported by landraider, with a squad or two of terminators to drop in via deepstrike. some elements of the scout company, and tons of other little stuff from codex chapters to accompany 2nd Co into battle when its needed (I love Apoc).

Fantastic looking conversion, BTW. I don't have the cajones to try stuff like that with my models.

If you ever find yourself in AZ I think our armies must meet in battle, on the table top. I'm sure my hordes of guardsman can add to your already potent force...and you better sack up and march across the table straight leg style .

Firehead,
I just went through the moving process from overseas in feb. I just got back! I only unpacked my models about a week and a half ago.. I lucked out the worst thing that happened was a broken tail fin on a Valkyrie. At the end of my second deployment in Iraq I had valks in a tacbox wrapped in t shirts lol.. But hey it worked. Point being your models should be fine..

It's funny all deployed 40k players are the same.. When it's time to pack up and go home we orders more stuff and send it home so we have even more when we get there.. Almost my whole circle did that .. That's dedication and devotion to the cause.. As far as Arizona goes I do have a few friends that live there and us playing a game may not be completely out of the question.. But If you ever come through Georgia you are invited to one of our weekend battles..

I play most air cavalry/Special forces style tactics . I refuse to play IG conventionally. So marching across the board is outta the question . I ride into battle . And I have built an focused my army on fighting and defeating space marines. So should we meet on the table top I will bring the heat and may the best man win..

I pray for you're safe return home brother and am anxious to see what you can do with a proper supply of game store materials to build with..

Make this your primary thread man, when my guys get off block leave they'll be posting.. Let's make this the best thread for the gaming community and keep the 40k universe up and running..

I'm almost done with my vulture and ill post some pics in the progress later.. Until then gamers post away and may the emperor be with you..

END OF TRANSMISSION.... . . .

I got some of the 3rd ID bubbas here with me,attached to us as secfor.. I have 3 of them playing Pathfinder with me, and one of them is interested in getting into 40K if he moves to AZ like he and his wife have been discussing.

Last time I went through Georgia was at Sandhill for OSUT, haven't been there since(also, Atlanta scared the beejezuz out of me. I walked past two guys calmly talking about shooting each other, wtf?!) But I'll certainly take you up on that offer if I find myself there.

I had to refrain from ordering more models. I didn't want there to be a ton of unbuilt stuff hanging around my place. I still plan on getting drop pods, and rhinos for all the squads that can take them. Seems a little excessive, but I'm all about "go big, or go home". I too prefer the airdrop method of IG infantry, though I also like mech. I was planning on doing an Elsyian Vet drop army, but I decided to hold off until I get some other major projects squared away, and secure a new civilian job. I'd eventually like to have at minimum, a platoon/battery/squadron of everything for IG...but I'll take it slow. I love modeling sooo freakin' much, even though I have almost no use for all of it at any one given time.

As far as continuing a Space Marine army, once I have elements of 1st company and 10th company completed, along with the full 2nd, I would like to do a Thunderhawk. I pray that by the time I get around to actually doing it, GW will just release a plastic kit .

My tail pieces..The middle section was grinded out of green stuff. The tail fins were made of bits and turned out well also..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I still have alot to do to it. But I`m very happy with the way it turned out.. I have modified a lot of stuff. But this particular valkyrie..was stored while I was deployed And was missing some pieces, tail fins, crew compartment doors ans so on..But with a lil imagination you can salvage a model.. So I sacrificed a valkyrie and gained a vulture..saved myself a few bucks...

E here ! This is my next mod project! the Hydra turret...

I decided to put this turret on a tank hull it just looked better. I was digging through my boxes and found my old manticore mod turret. I ripped the missile off and dug through my bit box and found some missile pod housings i believe are from a space marine speeder .. with a lil grinding and fitting i managed to get the auto cannon to fit in the housing. Then I attached the second auto cannon externally a lil lower. To get details on how i made this turret you can go to earlier pages of this forum..pretty easy to make..

I also made it to fit the turret slot on the chassis.Using green stuff to fit in and lock the turret on..I still have alot of painting to do to it. Hell i have alot of painting to do period..but being on block leave has allowed me time to get alot of work done.

After having 8 flyers, I realized, ai might want my own anti-air weapon.. but from my experience in sixth edition, Flyers themselves are the best anti-air weapon in the game...

Well that`s it for tonight, I hope you like the mod and the pictures..Any questions gimme a holler..L8ER!

BATTLE GROUP 13 COMMAND POST ON EYDOLIM .. 1900hrs march 30, 996003.M41

Please, Take your seats, I`d like to welcome our honored guest, Castellian Urserker Creed, His cabinet and our Cadian brothers. Colonel Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith first and only. As we all know as of next week The Cadian 303rd Armoured, and 102nd infantry divisions will assume responsibility of the Dalvalla sector. My unit, Battle group 13 Spec. Ops, Was sent to this region 3 months ago as a QRF or quick reaction force in the first weeks of the chaos invasion..The heretic slaughtered half the poulation in the city of Davalla, 200,000 in a little over a week. The DDF ( Davalla Defense Force) was 40% casulties in the initial invasion, and was left with roughly 30% strength by the time we arrived. The vostroyan to the north were successful in securing the Tamial sector. But west in the capitol city of Eydol Cadian shock troops, have been having a very difficult time holding back the chaos advance..

Eydollim Is a shrine world a place of religion and virtue, chaos would gladly hope to piss on our faith and devour this sacred ground until nothing remains. Castellian Creed ordered the mandatory evacuation 2 weeks ago. The evacuation was a success, and also eliminated the possibility of collateral damage. Since the evacuation, we have been successful in steadily deteriorating the enemy force with call for fire missions, air strike and orbital bombardments. The streets of Dalvalla are fairly quite, as skirmishes are less frequent. sometimes days without an incedent.

As with every transfer of authority, we go out with the unit learn the terrain, the enemy and the abilities of our men, their needs, there morale... I do not boost my own ego, because ego is as useless as a lasgun with no magazines.. but I lead my men from the front..even as a colonel. Every engagement, every day. ( Commissar Gaunt nods in approval) So what I tell you about this sector, is not hog wash.. i assure you it is very true.

Chaos is subdued for now.. our hit and run tactics have left them weak..but a new enemy has emerged... Orks and Eldar..why we do not know. We have reason to believe there may be an ancient technology that the xenos, and the great enemy are looking for..The details are calssified, that is all I can tell you for now. We actually had a run in with orks today.

I had my camera man with today, for those of you that were not there with us.. Please direct your attention to the big screen...

We started off on a short range patrol, just outside these very headquarters..

Troops set up a perimeter as Castellian Creed Talks to the men about why he ordered the evacuation..

In this sector every day is dancing with death.. you may have 5 skirmishes a day, and others you may think you are on vacation..Stay vigilant..Enemies surround us and want nothing more then your blood and then your souls..

later that day we went 4 miles away to the city limits via Vandetta gunships..

We arrived at outpost "Clover," at 1530 Hours. Clover is recon station located to the south and watches our tail entrance to Davalla..that way we dont get shot in the ass..

Today we had a great success! The eldar Autarch adriennash, was slain! Adriennash Has been a pain in the ass for the last two weeks.. failed assualts on clover, and harrassing our aircraft.. He successfully shot one down..our pilots were retrieved, and our vulture has since been replaced.. What your are about to see Has been declassified by the Imperial Commissariat as a morale booster to incoming troops. Adriennash is only about a battalion strong in men..No real dangerous threat. We believe he is the the recon element for a larger eldar force should they find what they are looking for.

At 1630 hours today Stormtroopers air assaulted in a killed most of Adriennash`s personal guard.. they surrounded the building..

As storm troopers battled with the xenos, we had our covert specialist infiltrate the structure, locate and assassinate the xenos leader.

The following photos and video you are about to see was taken from a storm troopers helmet cam. This is the verification Of adriannash`s last moments..

A Grand thank you to that operator who`s identity is classified...
