Throw a blob of guardsmen with a commisar at him, they will be there for so long you won't have to worry about killing it.

Ok, guys! Pariahs are done. Well, mostly done. I still have to add another coat of sand to the base and paint over any smeared paint on the bases, but other than that: finito. If I spelled that right.
Here's a closeup of one. The ends of the warsythes are outrageously fragile at the joint at the green "coils"... terrified that the weakened pewter would snap, I went about to the task of filing down the green rods at just the right length to let them slide in instead of fasten in. Of course, they're PVA glued... but I just wish it looked less like a mess. I really love the way the crests and faces on the models worked out, and the color scheme on the shoulderpads.
And here's all of them. You can probably see the one pariah who came out a bit slowed from the tomb-forge, after GW decided to send me a model with his warscythe half-molded. But all in all, I do like the way they turned out. They were just an outrageous amount of work.
Now, on to my spare necron warriors. I ordered a box of ground-pounders a while back with my pariahs, and now I'm filling the ranks of shootiness, after I am beginning to realize what a point sink any trump cards become.
Quinn's Eldar had arrived (-did I mention that before?) yesterday and we've been trying them out. He just got a bunch of troops and no vehicles, but he's working on picking up the rules. And He's getting E to paint them. I mean, I think it's not going to feel like *your* army if you didn't pour your soul into painting it, but at least it's better than the factory paint scheme of "Don't-Give-A-S*** Grey". Whatever. The Necrons will harvest them regardless.

What kind of Eldar units did Quinn get? No vehicles is a bad call IMHO, Mech Eldar can be deadly. They have one of the best Infantry Fighting Vehicles in the game, the Wave Serpent. Most of their infantry is pretty squishy though, and Guardians can't shoot to save their own lives.

Every game I've been in where there was more then two players ended up like that. The only difference was when we teamed up, which I think yall should try, makes for an interesting game. Especially if you take what your team mates army is weak at.

This is pure awesome.
In my opinion the army should strike a deal with GW to provide miniatures to soliders. I know it might sound kinda silly at first but all of my friends who got shipped out have universally told me how boring it is, and when it isn't boring it's so damn intense that you just need some good relaxing distractions afterwards. tabletop wargamming seems a perfect fit for that. I mean, you military guys know warfare and tactics, it's what you do. Plus tabletop games build friendships and allow for group fun which is good for building team work. Another benefit is that it doesn't require internet connections, electricity (generators can be expensive to run) or much else but the models and impromptu terrain. I think most soldiers would really enjoy tabletop wargaming, even the ones who would initially scoff at it as nerdy.
so heres my vote that if my tax dollars have to go to putting people in harms way against the wishes of the majority of the population, i want at least some of that money to go to giving those soliders a bit of fun.

You're missing the point, Corvus. Why wouldn't someone who doesn't support war prefer it going to little plastic men? Logically, dollars spent on space marines are dollars NOT spent on bombs. Don't mean to derail the thread, but that's my 2 cents. Regardless of what you think of the war, there's nothing wrong with giving the troops something to do that's relaxing and social for their downtime.

Well, I've been having a lot of internet issues lately. I've had to switch from one serve and then back to the other in the span of two months because neither of them can seem to learn how to perform maintenance on a hub that connects the population of a large hamlet.
I had a match with the XO last night, and it was actually dangerously close to beating him. He had at several points offered to resign, after I dropped his land raider, his Dreadnaught, both his terminator squads and his command squad. But in the end, he got me on phase-out with his Devastator Cannon. I took pictures, but forgot to take notes, and since I've slept since then, I've forgotten many of the details. Plus, battles between me and the XO have become so routine, we barely talk: "Lascannon." "Unh." "Miss." "Krak missle... hits... wounds." "Saved."
E made up a new gameboard for a volcanic planet yesterday, and I'm eager to try it out. And eager to stomp Quinn's Eldar.
I did learn some lessons from yesterday's funtime:
1. Divide your warriors in to as small as squads as possible, that way they can't be mowed down as easily, or half of your army wiped in an assault, and they can still get their WBB if they are near each other.
2. Keep the Pariahs in the back just so that they can join an assault with dreadnoughts or terminators while they are occupied with your warriors.
3. Wraiths... uh... I'm thinking about not using these guys anymore.
4. The nightbringer should be doing as much as he possibly can to just tear the army a new one, assault-style, and should make vehicles, terminators and power-weapon wielders it's priority. Let everyone else shoot the jeebus out of it. It still explodes when it dies, and it will keep some of the heat off of your monolith and phase-out units.
5. Keeping all of your guys spaced out 1 1/2" severely limits the amount of models the opponet can hit with template weapons. Orbital bombardment? Ha!
It was actually an incredibly close game, and I was a hair away from tabling the XO before he got me on phase-out on turn 7. Bah!
Maybe we'll get a rematch tonight. We'll see. And this time I'll try to take notes.

Hello again! I'm still pretty busy a lot of the time with work. I do still have some time to hang out with the WH crew however. The painting and modeling is still coming along slowly. I do have a question concerning my Predator I have yet to assemble. I would like to have the power of lascannons on it but is it worth the points? Would the autocannon be enough firepower against vehicle type targets? Also I have an unassembeled Devastator squad. So another question is do I invest the points in the squad with lascannons and missle launchers and have a regular Pred or go for the Pred with lascannons and forget the Devs?

This is going to be an interesting one.
First off, XO is Executive Officer, as Porksulime suggested. Ever seen Star Trek? He's like Commander Will Ryker. Except he plays 40K, smokes, and doesn't have a beard. He takes care of the more administrative and logistical stuff while the CO does more of the command decisions, politics, and planning.
Well, the XO suggested that in order to prove that Necrons weren't so nerfed that they couldn't beat his space marines, he switched armies with me for a match, and proved himself right. We played a 2000 point game, and He went with a Destroyer Lord with a rez orb and a warscythe, a full squad of pariahs, 'Lith, Nightbringer, and 40 warriors in two squads.
Starting out. I basically took the same setup he beat me with yesterday, except swapped points for the ironclad dreadnought and gave it a lascannon with the points instead. Standard Annihilation. XO rolls to go first.
End of Turn 1.
XO advances everything, bringing his D.Lord and Destroyers up on my right and drops two marines from my right squad. My soda-can/drop pod of assault terminators drops next to one of his troop squads. I fire lascannons from the squads, land raider, and dreadnought at the 'lith and stun it. My Vindicator scatters off a bit on one of the squads and only drops 5 necrons.
End of Turn 2.
The XO turbo-boosts his D.Lord squad to the land raider. He pulls back all of his warriors in range of the terminators. He runs the Pariahs and the Nightbringer towards it as well. He shoots and assaults into combat with the terminators, and drops 2. He loses several warriors in the proscess.
I focused my infantry fire on the destroyer squad, and dropped two destroyers that didn't come back. The Vindicator takes out 2 pariahs and 6 warriors, and the land raider stuns the monolith again with it's lascannons. In assault I drop a few more models while he gives my chaplain a wound.
End of Turn 3.
He uses the monolith to warp the necrons locked in close combat. He then advances some more, drops one of the terminators with a lightning arc from the Nightbringer, and the D.Lord's warscythe explodes the vindicator, taking one of the Destroyers with it. I'm left with one assault terminator left.
The next soda can/drop pod arrives, and out come the regular terminators. I drop the D.Lord with infantry fire, explode his monolith with a land raider lascannon (lucky!), and drop a handful of his warriors with the stormbolters on the drop pods and the newly arrived terminators, I also engage the warriors with my last assault terminator, take out one model, and he himself goes down.
End of Turn 4.
From combined fire from the bulk of his forces, most of my terminators die. The Necron Destroyer lord rezzed and assaults my regular marines, taking a couple down.
I continue to fire with my land raider at the necron warriors and drop a few, and bring my vanguard assault marines to attack the D.Lord, and drop it again. I completely forgot to fire the drop-pod mounted storm-bolters.
End of Turn 5.
The Necron Lord rezzes again and He advances his pariahs and the nightbringer, while repositioning the rest of his warriors. The warriors shoot at and kill the last terminator. This D.lord assaults my vanguard marines but is dropped again before he gets a chance to attack.
I try to advance some droops and take what shots I can, but only end up dropping one pariah.
End of Turn 6.
His D.Lord rezzes again and destroys my dreadnought. I make potshots and try to advance but I am out of any serious range and roll poorly.
Game ends.
SUMMARY: Huh. ....huh. Either the dice gods do not favor me or the XO is a much better tactical player than I am (or both). I don't know how this could have turned out any differently. Though I will say I have more fun playing Necrons. ...there really isn't that much to say, honestly. Though I think his option for a Destroyer Lord was unique and may have won him the game, which is cool, because I took the idea and used it to pwn Gwar in a Vassal game today.
I'm not going to shelve my necrons. Not yet. I don't mind if I keep losing. At least it's better than sitting in my can and watching bootleg durkistani dvds.
And for those of you commenting on military pay: It's not that bad for enlisted if you get a "housing allowance," which is depending on how many children you have, around an extra $1K a month. But the only way you can get that and not be forced to live in the barracks (dorms) and live like a drunken stiupid child is to either get promoted to E-6 (which takes years), or to get married. That money is often a motivation for a lot of bad marriages in the army. And the cause of a great deal of emotional pain... because the system is set up to make soldiers put themselves at risk so that they can attempt to live a normal life like normal men. Because contrary to popular belief, the army doesn't make men. It makes overgrown adolescents who learn to do nothing but suckle the government teat and, akin to Orks, beat down everyone underneath you simply because you're pissed that those above it did it to you when you were low-ranking. And some of them who outrank you still do. Seriously, it's no place for a functioning adult.

Sorry to hear about the loss. But you have the right idea! Play as long as it's fun, and winning or losing doesn't matter. I played against Kehrer's Tau today, and barely won, thanks to my new application of a warscythed destroyer lord (cleverly disguised as a Heavy Destroyer ) and a warscythe on my necron lord. While his broadsides exploded my lith in one turn, my efforts to continually harass his pathfinders, sniper drones, and other vehicles with warscythed lords ended up wrecking him. He wasn't a pushover, though. He loads his army up with powersuits and was consistently trying to tie up every unit he could by assaulting with them, and broadsiding everything else. And it nearly worked. I suggested he should introduce Kroot and Vespids to round out his forces more so that his troops aren't so helpless to fast attacks and assaults, but he says he avoids them because they have little or no armor saves. That amazed me. REALLY? The Tau's tarpitting forces get dropped on every wound rolled? Jeez. Maybe he is better off with the power suits.
Our First Sergeant, while he avoids the game itself like the plague, lest he be sucked into the nerd vortex, has been steadily painting some of XO's models to be his "honor guard" or whatever. He's all army, all the way, so of course he paints Ranger tabs on their pauldrons. It gives him something to do, I guess. Everyone gets bored out here.
My immortals will be arriving any day now, and I'll probably be buying a Destroyer Lord next... and after that... maybe start on Tyranids?

so i take it that the necrons are based with Iraqi Sand?
26957
Post by: diesel7270
Actually, no. I used all modeling sand that came with the starter kit. For the nightbringer, I just painted a deep blue/gray and drybrushed lighter gray over it.
A lot of the other guys, however, do base their models in Iraqi sand, including the irregular micro-pebbles that show up, looking as rocks on the base. Interesting looking, but seeing as how I wanted a true, barren dead-world feel, I thought the texture of the modeling sand would simply be the best/easiest choice. It's dust and crumble free, and consistent. If I were to do another army, and go for maybe a more savannah/rocky feel, or maybe an rocky alien type soil, I don't see how that would be a bad idea.
But a lot of other guys just use Iraqi sand because they see no reason to go out and buy modeling sand when sand of some kind is out here. And map boulders? We've got golf-ball sized gravel everywere out here.
EDIT: I'm also constantly tossining around ideas for a name for my army. I was thinking - egyptian, evil, ancient secrets... maybe like H.P. Lovecraft's "Nyarlotep" malign god?

Congrats on the win. One thing your Tau friend must not realize is that kroot come in a bbbbiiiiiiiiiiigg old blob. Add some hounds, a gunner, and possibly a shaper, and you got yourself a good unit. Vespids are good simply for some str. 5 AP. 3 fire.

Just found this forum post and for some reason I am extremely intrigued (guess I never wondered how you guys occupy your free time over there). Consider yourself subscribed. BTW as a US citizen, thanks again for your service.
As a Tau player myself, you may want to let your Tau friend know that Kroot are one of his most important assets. I primarily use them as meat shields but they are UBER cheap. An ideal unit of Kroot would be 10 Kroot and 5 Kroot hounds (I-5 and 2 attacks each for the hounds). I generally have at least 2 of these units in any sized army. Deploy them around your more important units (Crisis Suits, Tanks, Firewarriors) to prevent Outflankers and Deep Strikers and if an Assaulty army comes at you throw your Kroot in their face and maneuver your shooters to annihilate them once they're done with the Kroot. They are speed bumps, but they are cheap and effective. Crisis Suits, Railguns and Kroot are the bread and butter of any Tau army (that wins)...
Of course you could withhold this info if you wanna keep winning heheh...

For Necron tomb world names, Ancient Egyptian gods work (Anubis, Sekhmet, etc), as do any words dealing with death or undeath (Hades, Styx, Mortis, etc)
For example, I named my army the Acheron Tomb Legion, because they are a Necron harvester army from a Necropolis known as Acheron (acheron being one of the three rivers to the Underworld in Greek myth)

I've informed my Tau player of his need to diversify, but he refuses. Whatever. He's either adapt or lose. Or adapt *and* lose. Heh heh. He relies heavily on his battlesuits, specifically broadsides and squads of them for assault. I think he truly believes that there's got to be some *true* Tau setup that he can use to win.
Yes, I'll be returning to the states before the end of the year, and at that point I will stop posting on this thread, but that's going to be quite a while from now.

MORE CUSTOM PIECES!
What up folks! It`s been a minute. We`ve been kinda busy. Both missions and warhammer.I have been Playing pretty frequently, and not doing too shabby.I will get some battle reports out to ya.I just upgraded my internet so I can upload pics faster.I have recently been expierimenting with new tactics for the IG.Air Assualt won me a battle the other day against chaos space marines.I tabled him in the end.I`m Amped to play again soon. But I ordered a guardsmen marbo piece and some more up-armor kits for my tanks.Anything to impose to the "IMPERIAL WRATH," on lesser lifeforms...BWAHAHAHAHA!(clears throat) just kidding.Anyways I have some more customized pieces for you IG players out there. But before I begin let me start by saying I would love to hear your opinions good or bad. They help me when creating new stuff. And I would like to see some of your mods,It would be great to get some tips from you guys/gals too.
Ok, when I first started modeling my army i was upset about the battle poses there just was`nt enough. If your in a war not everyone is standing up some are laying down behind cover so thats just what I did.I took my magic Hobby knife and sliced and diced and Booyah! soldiers in the prone firing position!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Putting soldiers in the prone position is as simple as cutting the correct angles at the joints.Too easy! Now they all have custom weapons.I made one sniper rifle out of a flamer.I love flamers because you can make all different kinds of weapons out of them.Sniper rifles, shotguns like I made for col.straken, and my favorite heavy machine guns.My heavy machine guns are made to look like our 240 b`s.this is very simple.cut off the gas line for the flamer, flatten it and cut a few lines into in and you get an ammo belt.Find a piece of plastic cut it into a "V" shape glue it on and you get a bi-pod.then cut off a lasgun muzzle and glue it to the end and,you get the finished product.I use them to show where my heavy weapons are in my squads. The other sniper rifles are made from lasguns, vox casters and a q-tip tube. The barrel for the sniper rifle is made from the long antenna of a vox caster, with a lasgun muzzle break at the end.then cut part of a q-tip tube and make a scope. The only prob with the lasgun sniper rifle is the barrels are flimsy.the bend and warp easy.Your better off making the flamer sniper rifles. But either way they are cool looking. In the picture i have a machine gunner with a funky barrel..lol that has been changed to a lasgun muzzle. It looks ten times better. At the time I was out of lasguns. There is also a sniper in a ghillie suit in the pic. That is just scenery mossy I had left over,I have 3 snipers like that.In woodland scenery they become invisible.Deisel and xo were playing a game and found some sniper in the jungle when the game was over..lol I forgot about them.so it really works.

WOW looks good E.
can you do a toturial on how you made the shotguns,
The heavy machine guns look good. what do you count them as?
For my snipers I use a standard lasgun, cut off the barrel. then I get a laspistol and cut it off behind the powerpack. trip off the powerpack on the laspistol and glue it onto the lasgun, where the barrel was. remove the sights on top of the lasgun and attach a motar sensor thing. and bingo you now have a long las sniper or just a cool lasgun for vets.
Just use some GS to fill in any gaps.
I don't like the marbo model, you would have been better off converting your own.

Well, mail came in yesterday, and XO got his Ironclad Dreadnought and I got my immortals. Now I think all that's left for me to pick up for this army is a Destroyer Lord before I decide it's time to move on to a different army, at least to try it out. And I'm still thinking Tyranids. (EDIT: Or Chaos Daemons.) Everyone else seems lame or overplayed. Anyone have any input on that?
EDIT AGAIN: I like the Tyranids for one reason: Zerg. And the Aliens movies. Well, two reasons. As for the Daemons, it reminds me a lot of H.P. Lovecraft and cuthulhu mythos, and H.P. Lovecraft has got to be my favorite author.

I finally beat the XO! Man, I really wish I had taken pictures, but after turn 2 I stopped, believing the game to be over for me, as his vindicator cannon took out two of my warrior squads and half of my pariahs by then.
But I'll fill you in where I can:
We went with Ahniliation rules. 2000 points.
I had 4 squads of 10 warriors (40), 1 squad of 10 pariahs, 1 squad of 2 destroyers attatched to a Destroyer lord with a rez orb, phase shifter and warscythe. 1 lone destroyer, the Nightbringer, and a necron lord with a rez orb and veil of darkness.
If I recall correctly, XO had two squads of 10 SM's, with sergeants and lascannons, a vindicator, a land raider with lascannons, vanguard assault marines, a ironclad dreadnought in a drop-pod, assault terminators with a chaplain, and terminators with a chaplain... and scouts.
We had E place the terrain and rolled to see who went on which side of the board.
I had made the foolish mistake of placing all of my troops very close together, trying to keep them with the rez orb'ed regular lord, but that put the vindicator in a prime position to rain havoc on my units, which it did twice. But I tied it up as much as I could with potshots and harassing it with my Nightbringer (though I couldn't outrun it). He eventaully cornered me with his assault terminators, and I deep striked my squad attatched to the N.Lord too close to the vindicator, and so the mishap roll put them in reserve. When I brought them out, I decided to bring them out regularly (at that point they were my last troop squad, with 17 warriors) on the edge of the board so that they could shoot at the assault terminators that were harassing my pariahs and who had dealt serious blows to my other warrior squads. But the game ended at turn 5 with me taking out both of his terminator squads in my last turn, putting me up 4 points.
Details were left out, of course, but the end result was:
XO killed both Destroyer Squads, and three Warrior Squads. 5 points.
I killed the Dreadnought, Vanguard Assault Marines, and two terminator squads, each with a chaplain. 6 points.
He was pretty put out about losing, particularly because neither of us realized until I pointed it out once the game was over that his Chaplains may be independent characters and as such would count as extra points. At first, we had thought I lost. Add that to some crappy rolls (out of 7 dice, he rolled 3 1's on his terminators' armor saves once), and things just didn't go his way by turn 4. Granted, his assault marines were tearing through my warriors, but perhaps he would have fared better if he let his vindicator get a shot off on just the pariahs themselves to rid himself of that threat, but I think he was going for a quick phase-out, which is normally a sound strategy with necrons.
Anyway, he's not a happy camper. But hopefully he'll take the end of his undefeated status as a renewed need to prove his superiority, and play again, harder, better... instead of refuse to play me. I understand necrons can be a frustrating army to play against if I'm rolling well on WBB.

The reason I had considered Daemons was because no one else had them here, and I didn't want to embarass another newbie who is waiting on his Tyranids to arrive by painting and playing "his" army better. Though I will almost certainly choose them after reading through the description of the Daemons' army in the GW website. As for what kind of army to play, I have no clue. I have no knowledge of their codex and little knowledge of their units and their abilities. I'll probably grab a lictor because it looks like Cuthulhu or something, even though I have no clue what it does. I'm probably going to buy a Battleforce, a HQ unit, the Codex, and see what I like from them from there.

Lictors are a kind of "pathfinder" unit for the Tyranids. They leave a pheromone trail that leads the other Tyranids to prey.
In game terms, it allows for units that're being delivered via Spore Pods to "home in" on it.
As for Daemons...you saw the new ones coming out too, right?

No, I didn't. I just saw that it was an army divided on 4 fronts and would look aesthetically terrible if I mixed all 4 types together to get a balance of abilities. Or maybe they just look aesthetically terrible, period.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that the only way to do it(background wise at least) is a monogod army. Like, an all Nurgle army or all Khorne army, etc.
And yes, while some have differing abilities--it's generally offset by them having different benefits. Khorne's daemons, for example, tend to be the only ones that have an armor save in addition to an Invulnerable save and Nurgle's daemons tend to just be tough as nails and ridiculously hard to put down.

Ah, you know what? XO just pointed out that I had fielded 3 HQ units in that one. The Nightbringer, the Destroyer Lord, and the Necron Lord. So, we agreed to call it a void by stupidity, since we both missed that I was over my FOC for HQ units.

Let me just say, first of all, that I've been reading this thread since the first day it was started. I really appreciate the service all of you are doing for our country.
@Diesel congratulations on your first win against the XO! I've really enjoyed watching your army and tactics evolve until they are just how you like them. Also, the necrons look great. I would also vote for Tyranids as a second army.
@E I really like the mossy camo guardsmen. That is too funny how one was found still "hiding out" in the next battle.
If you guys can I would like to see pictures of your entire forces set up all at once. I always liked those pictures of an entire force. Keep up all the posts and pictures.

In the 4th ed codex, Broodlord was an HQ choice. NOW, in 5th ed, any troop genestealer can be upgraded to have a Broodlord. He is simply a really pumped genestealer, and still is Troops. (and is totally worth the points, OMG!)
I am personally bummed that there is no "genestealer" themed HQ for Nids now.. so I make do with a Tyranid Prime modeled from a Biggerized Genestealer.

I was floored when the XO finished his Chaplain. Some details, like the inside of his jump-jets, were left out of the view in the pics, but he poured his soul into that model. I mean, the XO takes a LONG time to finish a model, but he loves doing each of his models as perfect as he can, and this Chaplain simply amazed me.
I've got some more pictures to show you guys too.
So I worked on my Immortals extensively today. First, let me go over the issues I've generally run into with these guys. Maybe Corvus can attest (or tell me what I was doing wrong). Every one of the models' gun-arms had to be bent into shape to fit where they were supposed to go. Dryfitting was heinous; a small shift of the gun arm as it dried and then the free arm won't make contact with the Gauss Blaster. The Gauss Blasters themselves were a little flimsy, but not nearly as bad as the Pariahs' warscythes were. The variety of poses that are presented with the immortals is VERY limited. There's virtually only two significant variations: Head facing left, and head facing right. The barrel-ends of the Gauss Blasters are going to be a real pain to get to stay on, but to help with the adhesive aspect, I'm going to wait to put them on until I'm going to PVA glue the green rods in, so that the rods' glue and the metal-to-metal superglue all hold that relatively small object with a smaller contact point together. The legs of several came warped to where I had to bend the crap out of them just to sit on the base, and the base bar on the bottom of them all had to be trimmed down, as they were WAY too wide to fit in the base slot. And, finally, one of the models' Gauss Blaster was packaged with a semi-messed up blade and a missing arm that was supposed to be attached. That being said, they're beautiful models, and I can't wait to get them together.
This photo comes with some captions imposed on the image to illustrate what the Gauss Blaster piece should have looked like, and what I got with one model. The ONLY bit I had (and thank god I had it) that could have applied to it was the useless gun-arm piece that came with my Heavy Destroyer, which is packaged with the exact same sprue as a regular Destroyer, with two metal pieces added in for the "Heavy" part as the only additions. Of course, that arm is huge so I had to cut the top joints off to get it to a reasonable size, and I was still missing a forearm.
I took two bits of reinforcing bars that came with some other blister packs and tried to PVA glue them together to build something that looked like a Necron forearm, as you see here. After over an hour of waiting, it still hadn't dried sufficiently, and on picking it up it fell apart. Superglue did the trick on holding it together until I starting trimming it down to proper length, when the torque took the two apart. I figured trying further with this method would probably be very difficult to manage. So instead I took a bit of sprue tree and tried to carve it into something that at least resembled some kind of forearm looking thing. That way at least the dried plastic glue would relieve me of the bonding issues I run into with super glue.
Here's the finished "arm," with the exception of me having to shave down some of the lower half to let it fit into place.
And here's what it looked like when I applied it. Granted, it looks a little sloppy, and with some putty or other similar modeling techniques I hope to make it look more solid, but I basically just took a completely effed model and turned something semi-decent out of it. In fact, with it's more-impressive arm, I may give it a more elaborate color-job than the other immortals and call it the "leader," with a vague sentience similar to the Necron Lords. In fluff, anyway.
I've been meaning to get this to you guys for a while now, but here's a "lava" board E cooked up on a late night by himself out of a giant sheet of corrugated cardboard, play-dough, and red gloss spraypaint. Not bad for a night's work with scraps.
Limey wrote:

Ask and you shall receive. I wanted to do the other guys, E particularly, but they were bashful about some of their guys being half-painted or not at all. As for me, I left out my unpainted immortals in the below picture, and two of the Flayed Ones are only basecoated here, but what you see in this picture is my entire assembled and painted army.
You can also see my rather hasty attempts at a Necron Summoning Core and Plasma Generators. The plasma generators were purposefully sloppy because I didn't want to take my time painting several neat green coats on a spare slick plastic spraypaint cap.
Let me know what you guys think!

Diesel, I feel your pain with the Immortals man. The gun arm almost always needs bending to get a proper fit, and warped legs are common. I guess I've been lucky in that mine at least had all their arms lol. IMHO tho, they're a really easy model to assemble, as metal minis go, only hard part is getting the gun barrels to stay lined up inside the weapon casing, especially if the casing is slightly too narrow for the barrels to fit. Good luck with them!
Here's a pic of mine, for inspiration lol

Thanks for the input, Corvus. I'm probably going to do the gold-lined shoulderpads like you did, and then go with white on the shoulderpads' normal color. With the guy I modded (no comments on that, anyone? ) I'll probably do blue shoulderpads and a white face. I may even put decals on the shoulders like you did, Corvus. Thanks for the inspiration!
So E wakes me up from a nap to show me a new board he assembled, with loads of new terrain. Stoked by such a change of terrain scenery, he wanted to play a match and I was happy to oblige. So I took pictures, and some notes. I lost, though, but it was a close game and I had some bad rolls when I really needed them. But I still had a blast!
So here's a batrep:
Ahniliation (I always spell that wrong, and spellcheck doesn't help).
1500 points.
Necrons Vs. IG.
I had 2 squads of 20 warriors each, 10 immortals, one necron lord with a rez orb only, one destroyer lord with a rez orb, phase shifter, and warscythe, and three destroyers divided into two squads.
E goes first. (I've been rolling crappy on those, and I've only gone for the "seize the initiative" once, just to give it a shot. It seems kinda lame to me, unless I was playing tourney-style and really needed it.
Starting formation. E went a bit off convention and fielded a massive platoon as a single unit filled with veteran squads with melta guns. He also had two storm-trooper squads when he realized he could have more than 5 models in a squad. He really needs to get his codex down more... he accidentally fielded a squad with ALL melta guns, when he was limited to two. He also had three vendettas and a squad of 3 ogryns, one of them a 'ard head. I personally had little tactical recourse other than to try to get my destroyer lord to tear up his vendettas and let my infantry lay waste to his infantry. And it almost worked, except I did some bad rolling when I really needed it. It seems insane sometimes that he assaults with his IG, but this time, he lucked out.
End of Turn 1.
E had advanced his valkyries, but left his infantry standing still. His valkyries fire all of their lascannons at my Destroyer Lord's squad, taking down his two destroyer attatchments and giving him 2 wounds. One of the destroyers rezzed to the spare, single destroyer I had sitting out with them, but at already two wounds I was starting to sweat... I was relying heavily on my Destroyer Lord on taking down his vendettas, which is tough because they move so fast.
I advanced all of my units, clambering over barricades, and shoot what's left of my destroyers at the closest valkyrie for no damage.
End of Turn 2.
E advances all of his massive platoon of 40 troops and his two stormtrooper squads towards my guys, but is still out of range for the 12" rapid fire. His vendetta previously on the left side of the board closed some distance with the destroyers, and they all fire another volley at the destroyers (in addition to failed shots from his ogryns), taking all of them out. Fortunately, my Destroyer Lord Rezzed on it's own.
The Destroyer Lord after it rezzes, advances on the closest vendetta, and my warriors and immortals make their way to the center obelisk monument, and fire, taking down several guardsmen. The D.Lord assaults the vendetta, and wrecks it from multiple systems failures.
End of Turn 3.
E pushes his ogryns closer to the D.Lord, and advances his troops closer to get more shots. His ogryns finally finish off my D.Lord, and he doesn't rez. His lasrifles and melta guns drop a few of my warriors and immortals.
My troops pretty much stay still as everything is in range and the heavy terrain gives most situations a cover save. My immortals and the right squad fire at the ogryns and take them out. Which was a stupid move, as my right squad of warriors ignored their armor saves and would have been more than sufficient to kill them, while my immortals could fire at the vendetta in front of them, but I didn't realize their armor save was ignored until it was too late. The right squad fired on the huge platoon and took out 10 guardsmen.
End of Turn 4.
E moves and shoots, and then assaults my left squad with his closes stormtrooper squad. He's doing a bit of damage, but he's having a hard time against my WS and T, so my relatively few attacks are enough to get me to win assaults, though he is passing all of his morale checks.
My right squad of troops immobilize and shake the vendetta in front of them (I'm going for a KP by systems failure again with glancing hits), and my immortals shoot and assault into the big platoon squad, dropping again a substantial amount of his forces (but he's only down from 40 to 20) and he's still making his morale checks. Rolling 6 to wound against my immortals is making life hard for him on that respect.
End of Turn 5.
Tactics are grinding to an end here, for both of us. The lascannon blasts from his free vendetta are chipping away at my right squad, and between our two turns, I manage to drop his stormtrooper squad in a sweeping advance, and survive another round with my assault with the immortals. Gotta love that T5! All I manage to do with the other squad is stun the vendetta.
End of Turn 6.
My immortals take one more casualty than his squad does in assault, fail their morale and are caught in a sweeping advance (D'oh! 6 immortals down the drain!). He also moved, shot at, and then assaulted with his other stormtrooper squad, though I seem to be doing fine against them. He loses a few, I lose one in that seperate assault. Meanwhile my other squad destroys the weapon on the vendetta, leaving it useless and waiting for one more systems failure to die and give me a KP.
End of Turn 7.
In E's turn, he assaults with his main platoon and stormtroopers, and though I take his stormtrooper squad down to two more models, I recieved one more wound than his did, failed my morale check AGAIN and was caught in a sweeping advance AGAIN. So to try to at least tie the game, I seperated my N.Lord from the main squad, wiped out the two remaining stormtroopers with the staff of light, but the remaining troops in front of the vendetta failed to get a WD or immobilized on it again, and he won by 1 kill point.
After the battle is finished, Corporal Birdman has a message to the Necron Lord from the Emperor.
SUMMARY:
While talking with Gwar, he explained he may have fielded an illegal platoon. Company and Platoon command squads cannot attatch to the main body platoon and thus may have given me more kill points. Or something. We are still making mistakes, as we have no outside reference there to tell us what we're messing up, because we're not playing in a GW store or a 40K event. It's just a bunch of guys trying to make something out of the byzantine rules system of 40K. I'll talk with E about it and see if everything was square.
I don't see how the battle could have gone any differently, other than me rolling horribly when I really didn't need it. The two sweeping advances are what hurt me the most, as my necrons probably would have stayed in those assaults, and maybe won at least one of them, if they hadn't failed morale and then gotten destroyed in a sweeping advance.
With the map being much more terrain-heavy than we usually play, my guys were at least getting cover saves against his lascannons and melta guns.
Oh, and E custom modeled the guardsman in the last picture. He worked extensively on terrain this morning and so we had a bunch of new buildings, and several monuments build from foam he lightly painted white to look like granite. It was a beautiful map to play on (considering what Iraq has to offer us for available terrain pieces). But we did get an extensive amount of wobbly-model syndrome, especially on the rocks around the perimeter of the obelisk-looking monument. By the way, those white rocks are keyboard keys.

Technically I'm Infantry. I was Airborne Infantry (paratrooper) until I got transferred to this unit from Alaska, and served last deployment as a rifleman and a grenadier. This deployment I'm basically the administrative management for the company I'm in. A paper pusher who handles problems for the soldiers here who are too busy with missions and tasks to bother themselves with obscure forms and red tape. That's what happens when you're the one person in the company who's good with a computer.

Yeah, it's not too bad. If it were a civilian job, I'd probably be loving it. But it's still the Army and comes with the rest of that package deal, so I'm not trying to stay in the service. It doesn't matter if you're a meat-shield or an underwater basket-weaver: You've still got to wake up at 4:45 in the morning to go to work and listen to some mouthbreathing troglodyte who outranks you (only because he's spent half his life in the army because he has no place else to go) tell you that you're a worthless turd for a negligible error in performance. It's not that I'm tired of getting shot at, because in this deployment, as opposed to last one, it's pretty cush. What I am opposed to is the structure and personality of the institution of the army and the people in it.

Well, I played E tonight and won. His previously posted Corporal Birdman flipping the Bird at the Nightbringer continuously as it L.Arc'ed one of his gatlin LRs and warsythed it's way through a demolisher LR, guardsman Marbo, and a heavy weapons team. I almost tabled him, but that was probably due to a really lucky lighting arc at the first turn (wrecked a LR), and good saves. Except for the wraiths, who went down in turn 2. Until he hops on to correct me, he had two Punishers, one Demolisher, one Valkyrie, Creed, Marbo, two heavy weapons teams, one stormtrooper squad, a command squad, and I think one or two veteran squads.
I had two squads of 20 warriors, 1 N.Lord with Rez Orb and Gaze of Flame, N.Bringer, 3 Wraiths, and 7 Scarabs w/Disruption Fields.
We went to 1500 points.
E is just upset that the Nightbringer tore him a new one. I kept making those 4+ saves, over and over again. It wasn't until I had dropped 3 units with it that it finally went down.

E, Punishers are comlete trash against all armies exept for Ork and Tyranid swarm armies, and they are way overcosted for having no AP. I would suggest using standard Leman Russ tanks, they are cheap and are good against most armies. Also, if you do not use him already, I would suggest using Knight Commander Pask. For 50 points he brings the BS to 4 so it will scater less and he can also add +1 to armor penatration rolls.

Well, I played against the XO today. It was spontaneous, so I didn't get to take pictures. Plus is was played on the same map my last two matches were on, so it's not like there were any new things to show off. But anyway...
The Andreas Rising chapter comes to the aid of the crushed Cadian 31'st to liberate it from the Necron harvest that had taken the city yesterday. With them came a new addition to their speartip: a Lascannon-loaded Predator tank.
I won. This time, it wasn't a voided match due to an illegal army. I won fair and square, though the XO was pretty heated I was doing so well on my WBB rolls. That, and my N.Bringer's Lightning Arc took out his lascannon predator before he had a chance do to anything with it. Which no doubt didn't help the XO's mood... I'm sure he was aching to at least see how it would stack-up against the monolith. And I imagine it would have done pretty good if it had a couple of turns to unload on it.
His terminators and heavy flamers on his land raider did a number on my immortals and 1st squad of 20 necrons, and actually managed to kill my necron lord (so at that point I was sweating, as his lascannon and krak missles simply removed my models from the board). The only thing that saved me is my now-growing staple of 40 warriors with anything 1500pts or above. And a lucky game-end roll.
It's actually brought to mind some thoughts about the game theory behind 40K. Good army choices and tactics can certainly help you out in a game, but the dice decide everything. You can be a crack tactician and have every contingency covered, equipped to take down the specific units you're facing, but it's not going to help you if you roll nothing but ones. On the other side of that coin, a mediocre player who is rolling excellent simply has to keep himself from making stupid moves, like calling shots against targets out of range or deep striking right next to enemy models.
Call me a blasphemer, but IMO, it is because of this that two experienced players who know their armies could place the realm of 40K into a skill-gauged league between Monopoly and Bingo. The polar opposite of Chess.
That being said, I love the game and see it more on the Roleplaying side. The fun I find in the game is the means to the end, and not really the end in itself. As gratifying (or crushing) the outcome of a 5-hour 2000pt game can be, envisioning and controlling your realm of battle like a tactician-demigod is thrilling. Plus, the heavy realm of chance means that even against expert opponents, an inexperienced player has a decent chance at actually winning and feeling that thrill.
To go a bit further, and perhaps step on some toes, such heavy luck-fueled mechanics make Tournaments, trophies, and other such honors seem largely token.
Thoughts?

I agree but only with part of your statement. For the most part a 40K battle is an exercise of basic probability where you can predict the results along the X number of rolls to kill Y lines. As the die is the same to everybody (1d6) things should be equal here at the end, it´s very rare that a player keeps rolling 1s and only 1s but being humans we tend to fixate on the rolls where we only get 1s rather than the trend. With that out the way, there are 3 places where you can autowin or lose a battle. 1st is army list building, let´s face it there are lists that should never see the light, and I´m not talking about overpowered ones. GW in their infinite wisdom keeps trying to make us build (and buy) certain units unfit even for latrine duty. Fortunately this point is under player control and after a few battles most will be able to write and run a half decent army list. 2nd (Here I agree with you with the randomness) Deployment, you roll to see who goes first, measure the battlefield, the objectives; put down your army and guess, the other guy rolls a 6 and seizes the initiative. Cool! For some armies this is the end of the battle. And not being a regular experiment in probability you can´t predict the result on a reliable way (rolling S3 vs T4 3+ sv is regular during the battle, that the blond guy rolls a 6 at the beginning and that next battle is the other way around or perhaps not, can give any result) 3rd and last, random number of turns. By itself is not that bad but combined with a random battle type selection (tho in most tournaments this is moot as the type of battle are decided beforehand) and number 2 makes some armies to have uphill fights every fight, as you cant predict before you sit down to play if you are going to play objectives or annihilation, and if your opponent will seize initiative and screw up your 5th turn objective grab (or the other way around) M.

So the XO manages to lose two sprue trees from his Ironclad Dreadnought and we spent two hours last night sifting through everything trying to find it...
My tyranids will likely be arriving soon. Which reminds me, that I probably need to buy some different paints for them. At least Vallejo paints are much less heartache to deal with that GW paints.
By the way, I posted something on a Necron Tactics thread:
The necrons are a really, really hard army to get right. In my experience, and this contradicts what others have said on this thread: Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers are virtually a waste of points. Heavy Destroyers get one single shot that you're probably going to direct towards vehicles. And any enemy player who knows what he's doing is going to drop them and your destroyers with high-AP weapons in his first turn. Lascannons and Plasma weapons are the common culprits. Destroyers and H.Destroyers are outrageously maneuverable, but most players will have some long-range weaponry (See Lascannons above) to make your guys pretty much fry helplessly, and if they're dashing around, they're probably not going to be in range of a rez orb.
I typically play a crapload (40) warriors, a full squad of immortals, and if I'm playing tough armies loaded with power weapons, then a Nightbringer. If I'm playing weaker armies with higher model-counts, I'm going to use a monolith's particle whip. Use a Monolith's transport ability, or a Veil of Darkness, to pull squads out of close combat as often as possible. And Pariahs are only good against vehicles and anything that does not negate armor saves. Otherwise, you're better at saving your points on immortals. Sure, they lower nearby Space Marines' leadership to 7, but assault terminators will simply crawl out of their land raider and drop a 360 point squad in one assault phase.
And someone replied:
40 warriors ... you must play against people who don't grasp what to do against that, or you are vastly superior to your opponents in skill. 40 warriors + NB is pretty terrible.
Is that true? What am I doing wrong?

I'm working on my Immortals currently, and I've found that I'm unsure on whether to continue the painting scheme I used with my Necron Warriors, or to go with white shoulderpads... sort of a rank denotation. But it may clash too much with the worn-out gunmetal look over the majority of their bodies. I'm not sure, but I wanted to try to make them look like something more than just bigger Warriors with bigger guns.

This is neither the appropriate time, thread or manner in which to discuss this/related issues. I hope we can leave this here yes ?
Kudos to those who did the right here.
To Mr. Diesel : personally I've had great success -- less so in 5th edition alas -- with destroyers, the ROf and S of their shooting is not to be sniffed at, I'd have a look at getting some of them.
Been a while since I ran the necrons but I did alright with
HQ :
1 Lord with res. Orb, lightning field phlactery and Solar Pulse
1 Lord with Veil of darkness gaze of flame and phylactery.
Elite :
5 Immortals
Troops :
15 Necron Warriors
15 Necron Warriors
Fast :
5 destroyers
5 destroyers
5 destroyers
Heavy :
1 Monolith
2 Heavy Destroyers
1 Heavy Destroyer.
more or less, not quite sure on the Lords equipment there.

Really? Hm. Well, I guess I ought to invest in some more Destroyers. Bang-for-buck, I was thinking about just buying another battleforce. But it looks like I may need more than just the three Destroyers that come with it. ...and I'll have little need for 60-something Warrior models. It's just disheartening to see a 50-point model bite the dust when a player just points his lascannons at them. But perhaps if I ran them in bigger squads...
Thanks for the tip. I'll keep it in mind.

50/50 chance of that model getting back up the next turn though, don't forget Destroyers are T5 so las cannons don't negate their WBB rolls.
You'll need at least 6 ( ie 2 squads of 3) to make them work however.
If you get all 15 it is very satisfying to shoot 45 S6 shots at a target. Plus at S6 you can at least break and penetrate a rhino/similar which can, if you're lucky, give your warriors something to shoot at.
The things with lots and lots of warriors is that is leaves them very vulnerable to large blast weapons and they are still very likely to lose and then die to any determined assault unit. In my experience anyway.

First off, much respect to anyone who serves.
Second, I enjoyed reading this thread enough to sign up and say it's been damn fun reading/seeing the progress you've made with the hobby in all aspects. You can really see how much better you guys have gotten at painting as it has gone on.
Anyways, keep it up!

That was why I was kind of wondering why E_ninja uses Punishers (other than because they look cool) the regular LRBT makes your save and WBB rule moot, and the other army is the XO`s SM that suffers from the same problem.

I hear that.
This is one area where the destroyers help a bit, the sheer weight of fire helps drop a few down, plus..well... this is one of the reasons you need a few heavy destroyers in there I reckon.

Ok, well, today was a really slow day for the guys. I did some more work on my immortals and such, and am still waiting on my bugs to come in. Though now I feel a bit like a stooge, because reds8n has convinced me to buy more destroyers. Aaargh!
Anyhoo, Another one of the tankers who just recently got his army and played his first game yesterday, is playing space wolves. I think he dived a little too deep into the model-buying proscess and was doing his chapter master's model within the first week of getting his army, so I had some concerns he may be just whipping it together to have an army, and be part of the group. But it doesn't look half-bad, and if I get around to seeing his army in the evenings when my camera is about, I'll be sure to post some pictures.
XO ordered another land raider. As if one wasn't enough to bring destruction to my necrons. But we'll see.

Hive Tyrants are awesome. Great model (requires pinning to put it togther though) awesome abilities, Lash Whip and Bonesword combo, ability to take Tyrant Guard, etc.
And this is a trollface
It is a gak-eating grin made when one does something cheesy/over the top/rediculous that results in other people flipping out/getting mad/facepalming, etc

We've been super busy the past couple of days. None of us have been able to get much painting or gaming in.
I was sitting down with the XO yesterday, and I realized that towards the end of next month, I'm going to have to start packing everything up and sending it home. Which is a little depressing, because finding a new group to play with back home will be tough. I'll be sending all of my models to my fiance's house as I spend about a month and a half getting out of the army in another state. I know the guys back in Georgia will want to play some 40K while I'm there, but I really don't have a place to send them to.
I guess I'm going to have to start buying Foam Trays so that I can pack this stuff up. I guess I'll be generating some ad revenue for the site when I click on the banner to search for a website selling carrying cases.
Thanks for the well wishes, everybody.

If you don't mind me asking, where is home? You might be suprised to find out where gamers live. Like on forward operating bases... :p

Post by: diesel7270
That's kind of a hard question to answer. For the first two months, I'll be in Georgia. After that, I'll be getting out of the Army and move to South Carolina. As a child, my father was in the Navy, so that had us moving all over the place. And as a teenager, I grew up in the mountainous countryside of Missouri. That's where I spent the largest chunk of time in one place, and I think of it as my only real home, though the idea of home itself is kind of absent from me. Now, my siblings have all moved out of the house, and my parents have moved to Wyoming to pursue a job opportunity.
I know there's been a huge lack of visual content lately. We've all been really busy the past several days, and getting everyone together to even spend a couple of hours painting or playing has been impossible. Just today, though, we've gotten back into the groove of working on our models, and spent 3 or 4 hours. My immortals are nearing completion, and along with them, I will definitely be posting pictures of one player's Space Wolves, particularly their chapter master, as well as the XO's current project, the "Emporer's Champion," modded to have the Sanguinor's wings on him. It looks really awesome so far. Just bear with us as we start churning out some more eye candy!
By the way: I also finished Flight of The Eisenstein the other day. I need to pick up Fulgrim one of these days...

Two games going on in one day! I played against Early's Space Wolves, and E played against Lt. Krick's Chaos Space Marines. I won against Early (but I'm learning how to play against Assault-based armies and am getting close to mastering Necrons) and E and Lt. Krick tied.
Pictures were taken, but E borrowed my SD card so that he could upload and post his own batrep, so you guys will probably be seeing that soon. And after my SD card is returned to me, I'll be posting the batrep from my game, as well as pictures of Early's Space Wolves (if E doesn't post them first!).
My Tyranids have shown up today and I've been working my way through the codex, and it does seem very fascinating! The fluff is very fun and I'm eager to get a crack and playing the army, but I've still got some necrons to finish, and I think we're out of plastic cement (thanks for always leaving the caps off of all of the bottles overnight, E).
So, big posts will be coming within the next 24 hours! Hold on to your hats!

I am probably... probably... going to paint mine black/green with gloss, like the bugs from Aliens. I'm a HUGE fan of those movies.
EDIT: Rules question... do drop-pods and mycetic spores prevent you from scattering off the table, the same as with impassible terrain and models?

I'm not sure about the Spores, but as far as I know Drop Pods can still scatter off the table; they'll count as being put back in reserve...

Post by: diesel7270
I'm assuming that as Drop Pods and Mycetic Spores can be killed after they land, they count for kill points?
Anyway, here's some batrep pics and stuff from yesterday for you guys.
Early and I had a kinda small, 1200 point match. I wasn't too familiar with Space Wolves (and I'm still not), but I knew Space Marines. Regardless, he was a new player, so I thought I'd go a bit more experimental on him. With all of the rules he had to look up for his new army, however, the game took hours, and I also hand to field dozens of questions for the other game being played by Lt. Krick and E.
We played Ahnillation because it's a straightforward game type and I didn't want to throw too much at Early at once.
This is how we started off. Early went first and scared me pretty bad, because I knew his twin-linked lasguns on his land raider were going to go straight for my monolith. All I knew of Space Wolves otherwise is that they are murder in close combat, so I did what I could to avoid them. I used my monolith and ran instead of shooting if I didn't think it would do me any good. Only the combines firepower of a monolith and a Destroyer Lord was enough to take down his Terminator Squad.
I played Destroyer Lord, 3 destroyers, Necron Lord, 2 squads of 10 warriors, 1 squad of 10 immortals, and a 'lith.
End of Turn 1.
For some reason his scouts had no sniper rifles. He drop-podded in his terminators and ran everyone else as close as he could, using his lascannons on the Land Raider to harass my Monolith.
As for me, as soon as his drop pod landed, I particle-whipped the drop pod to get a quick kill-point and possibly take some terminators with it (and it did), and combined fire from my two other squads of troops took a couple more down. My immortals fired at his scouts, and they fell back.
End of Turn 2.
While he continued to advance his troops and fire the handfuls of boltguns his squads had, he didn't roll particularly awesome and I saved most rolls. His terminators assaulted one of my squads of warriors and dropped several, but they were in rez-orb range.
My Destroyers break off from the destroyer lord to harass and slow down another advancing squad, while my destroyer lord goes after the terminator squad with it's warscythe, attacking the terminator whose target was warped out by my monolith. It's Gauss Flux Arc did nothing, though.
End of Turn 3.
He was trying to get his guys even even closer, and was a hair away from assault range with most of them. He dropped all of my destroyers with plasma and melta shots, and a few random shots dropped one or two of my other necron models, but nothing to really worry me other than how close his guys were getting.
I manuvered my monolith around my necron troops and moved and ran them back to buy them some time from Canis... or at least get Canis far away from everything else - particularly my immortals. My particle whip scattered off the land raider, and my leftmost warrior squad fired at the oncoming troops. Meanwhile, my immortals are laying waste to the squad closing on them.
End of Turn 4.
Two squads converged on my leftmost squad, and my necron lord took the brunt of one attack. Fortunately, he rezzed next turn, but anyway, his other squad who were previously advancing on my immortals are falling back here from a failed morale check last turn. Canis looks like he's trying to make a move for my immortals, after he closed and wiped out the other squad of troops, but he's got to cover a lot of terrain to get there. I'm getting a little close to phase-out so I'm erring on the side of caution. His landraider has still been making horrible rolls against my monolith, and tried to tank-shock my immortals, but all that did was scoot them further away from Canis.
I use the monolith to warp my squad on the right (the last one standing) to get them out of close combat, and my monoliths' facing makes them a hard to reach target. My immortals chase down the retreating squad (since SM's always regroup), shooting, assaulting, and then consolidating, *all to get far away from Canis*. My warriors fire at the Lone Wolf, not realizing that he only grants me a kill point if he's LIVING at the end of the game.
End of Turn 5.
Lined up and trying to take shots and the squad warped to the monolith, the two of his squads left out on their own are funneled and blinded by terrain. Not many get shots off. Canis is still hauling straight for my immortals and I'm trying to buy time. Still, his landraider's lascannons do nothing.
I move my warriors into the forest to give them cover saves, distance, and keep them alive longer. Meanwhile my immortals shoot at Canis, and give him all but his last wound. I fire the particle whip at Canis and miss.
End of Turn 6. End of Game.
Canis can't quite close the distance and what's left of his two squads give little damage to the squad of warriors in the forest. My immortals and warriors unload on Canis, killing him, and my particle whip destroys his landraider. The die is rolled to end the game, me with 4 kill points (if you count Drop-Pods) and him with 2.
Here's a picture of his Chapter Master:
And E should be posting a Batrep *eventually* ...

*Almost* done with the immortals. Just got to do some touching up, varnish, and glue in the green rods.
Can someone explain to me the cover system when you're getting shot by ordinance and your troops are in the middle of area terrain with cover and concealment? At what point do they get cover saves from the blast or ordinance? At any time, even if it landed right in the middle of your squad?

its a cover save no matter what unless the rules state other wise, for example the collosus siege mortar and nova eradacator tank negates all cover saves where others allow a cover save as normal

So much for E's batrep. They've all been extensively busy for the past couple of days and will continue to be so for the next several.
I managed to get a lot of work on my immortals done, and did some other work with the XO. My immortals are just a hair away from finished. They just need a second coat of sand at the base. Though finished will continue to be a loose term with those models, as putting and keeping the green rods in the weapons was murder... the barrel ends kept snapping off and in some cases the beams outside the weapon weren't wide enough to support two rods. It was crazy. Perhaps I should have dryfitted it all first, but I had no idea it would be that tough. The decals on their small, curved shoulders was also difficult, and a few broke while I was glossing them. Oh well... we'll chalk it up to the beat-up necron look, because the gloss is on them, now.
Anyway, when they're done, I'll post a picture of the squad.
I put together a hormagaunt (if that's how you spell it) today just to see what they look like, and what to expect. Sort of visually planning the painting and finder touches in my head. The idea to paint them like the xenomorphs in Alien and the other Aliens movies will be tougher than I expected, because it's kinda hard to give depth to a solid black creature. Though I have seen some artistic interpretations of the xenomorph that made them more scum-greenish or greyish. We'll see.
What is on my mind the most, however, is how I'm going to base them. I've got a few ideas. I want to toally avoid the whole "just put sand down" like I did for the Necrons. Sure, it was easy, but it made sense as they were designed to be somewhat Egyptian in style and world. With the Tyranids, I've got the dense foliage that would be expected of a planet they're starting to invade, the blasted rock of a planet scoured by them (which would look like the base of my Nightbringer, really), or an idea I had to make them look like the floor-deck platings of a space hulk or imperial ship. Any ideas?
24105
Post by: Corvus
If you're going for the xenomorph look, the space hulk/starship decking sounds like the most fitting idea. Bonus points for putting bits of dead guys (Guard, Eldar, Spehss Mehreens, etc) on a few of the larger bases

Post by: diesel7270
Any idea how I would make that?
Also, anyone know where the best deals on foam tray carrying cases are? I need to pick up one for at least my pewter models so they don't break in-transit. The plastic are a bit more hardy, so I'll probably bubble-wrap them, but I at least need something. At least one with 30 slots, for my immortals, flayed ones, and fragile pariahs, and one custom or large one for my nightbringer. If it happens to have more slots, great.

Battlefoam are usually rated as the best quality foam trays, however I'm not sure about their prices, reasonable IIRC.

Here's my finished Immortals!
Between my remaining scarabs and flayed ones, destroyer lord, and other destroyers and heavy destroyers on the way, I may not be able to dive too deep into the Tyranids until after I get out of the Army. I am only a month and a half away from packing everything up and shipping it to my girl's place. I may leave the Tyranids largely undone just so that I don't have to pamper them in transit. I'm sure the remaining necron models will keep me occupied until then, and I still have to concern myself with getting them back home without breaking all of them. I had intended on calling Battle Foam last night, but the internet was down all evening and night. If I can't manage to get a solid answer as far as what I need out of them by payday (6 days) then I'll guestimate what I need and fill any gaps with a plethora of Styrofoam and other foams that the guys have found.
If you look through the last edition codex for Tyranids and not the current one, there is a painting example of tyranids that is black and red. Take something like that, with the red being green and much less prominent and you've virtually got what I'm shooting for.
Unfortunately, with the exception of my Destroyer Lord, all of the other unpainted Necron models are nothing you haven't seen me do before, so with all above understood, that leaves little artistic displays for you guys before my time here draws to a close. Hopefully E and the XO will post stuff in my absence, but they often do not have the kind of free time in the evening that I do. And if they do, and they're not playing 40K, they would rather play video games.
On the bright side, and this is a longshot as well, my girl has expressed interest in learning to play and loves the pictures I have sent home of my army, so that may develop into it's own set of experiences as I get her involved in the hobby. OR... she may spend half an hour trying to grasp the Byzantine rules and give up. The rules system properly reflects the bureaucracy of the Imperium.

Well, I figured just to give it a shot, I would try to paint a Hormagaunt tyranid like a xenomorph from Aliens. Minus the ship deck floor, as I don't know how to make that. But Basically I just basecoated it and did some light drybrush shading with Space Wolves Gray. This lil' guy is sitting on my desk in my room while I ponder over how to do those internal riblet sections better. I also had a hell of a time getting the toxin sacs to fit on the arms.
EDIT: This is NOT a finished product. Just looking to see if the base color scheme that will fill the bulk of the body even looks remotely good.
Comments? Suggestions?

I do believe they count for kill points, if I remember correctly I think dedicated transports are the only thing that don't count (or one of the very few anyway) and drop pods and spores aren't dedicated transports. If someone could confirm this, that would be great.
Well, me and the XO painted all evening. I finished up three sets of scarabs that were left over from my Necron Warriors sprues, and I did some assembly work on my Destroyer Lord, but what I plan on showing you is my Hormagaunt so that I can get some honest opinions.
But first! The XO finally finished his Chapter Mavster "Andreas" and it's looking gooooood!
Pics:
Here's the two latest achievements from the XO: His Chapter Master "Andreas" and Chaplain "Scrotor" (We just nicknamed him that, with the running gag that he thinks it's Latin for power and masculinity).
Same models in reverse. Sorry about the blur, but you can make out what he did with them.
Aaaand the close-up. I think the XO did a fantastic job on this model. I love the wings. He made this model with parts from the Emporer's Champion model and the wings and pack from the Sanguinor. He'd love to see what you guys think about it. He looks at the thread often, he just doesn't post because not much is said about his SMs.
Here's some more work on my Hormagaunt. It's funny how the camera catches everything you missed with the naked eye, but I highlighted the chiten with Wolf Grey from Vallejo paints, as well as some hues of their Cayman Green. I washed a Dark Green in it's maw and Wolf Grey drybrushed the teeth and vent-holes, and didn't know where to go with the eyes without looking wierd for this color scheme so I just applied a line of wolf grey around the eye rim and left the eyeball itself black. I also painted the venom sacs but wasn't sure if it was too different from the rest of the model. I also am wondering if there isn't enough variety in color for this guy. Keep in mind, again, this is not a finished model, and is largely based off of the xenomorphs from the Alien and Aliens movies. I would like to hear as much constructive advice as you can hand out, or anything you think I am doing well thus far. It's harder to do this guy than my necrons because it's a new type of army I'm not used to painting with different details. "Happy accidents" can be afforded less with these guys, because with Necrons you can chalk it up to their beat-up look.
Again, let me (and the XO) know what you think!

Correct about spores and drop pods, if they scatter off the table it is a roll on the mishap table. However, you are wrong about dedicated transports. Drop pods and spores can ONLY be taken as dedicated transports, and yes they do count for kill points. In some missions, they are an automatic 1/2 of their KP because they start the game immobilized!
Also don't forget that pods count as moving at cruising speed the turn they arrive, so no shooting and it takes a 6 to hit them in CC.

For spaceship corridor bases, try gluing some plasticard with a design on top of the base. Evergreen has diamond and corrugated metal plasticard sheets available but when you are back in the US I don´t think it will be hard to find alternatives.

I seriously need some advice on that hormagaunt. I'm beginning to think that I really can't get the xenomorph look. I may have to go with more reddish tints or perhaps something entirely more alien. Good thing I did it all in acrylic. I'll sit on the job for a few more days, but if I decide to change the paint I'll just strip it and start over.

diesel7270 - I think, if your not willing to have less black and more colour, the only way to go would be a gloss varnish to make it look more wet and less like stone.
Also it would be worth experimenting with clear glue to make saliva and/or slime running of it.
Realy like the idea, hard to make it "pop" being a small model with little contrast or colour.

Diesel: Try putting the gloss coat on your gaunt before you give up on the scheme. As for the internal riblets: consider just doing an overbrush (like a drybrush, but with slightly more paint) of whatever grey you are using to highlight the black on them.
Another suggestion: try adding a small amount of the darkest blue you have to your black basecoat, then wash in pure black. That might make it pop a bit more. If you look here: http://library.galciv2.com/mvlib/ss/Fullview_Xenomorph.PNG part of the iconic look of Giger's alien are the blue reflections.
Another possibility: Intereference Blue. http://www.artsupply.com/golden/interference.htm Interference paints are expensive, and need to be thinned with water or acrylic medium, but a small amount goes a long way. If you mix some into your black basecoat, it will give the black an oily blue metallic sheen. With a good gloss coat, you may not even need to highlight: the varnish and the interference might catch the light enough for the tabletop.
XO: I hate to suggest something that could potentially ruin a fantastic model, but a VERY light wash of blue-grey could bring out the details on your chapter master. If you have glaze medium (NOT gloss medium, two very different things), I'd suggest doing a 1:10 mix of paint to glaze medium, then doing a wash into the nooks and crannies of the powered armor.

Thanks guys for the advice. I may go with your suggestion on the blue, themocaw. I may strip it, basecoat it dark, dark blue and wash black, and then see where that gets me. At this point it's one gaunt, so I'm entirely in experimental mode before I start assembly-line painting. I had fully prepared for the contingency of being dissastisfied with the paint job. You may have seen in the gallery the popular pic of the gaunts in the black/blue/ with some red and white paint job. That actually looked really good, though of course that's not exactly what I'm going to do. But that attitude... or atmosphere presented by their color scheme is what I'm trying to capture.
In other news, we have a new First Sergeant, and working for him is akin to the 4chan jokes about Commissars (*BLAM*). Minus the summary execution. He's pissed if you're too close to him, or too far away. He's pissed if you speak to him when not spoken to, but if you don't keep him informed he's also pissed. He's pissed if you don't charge the obstacle with wild fervor, and pissed if you break ranks in order to charge the obstacle. ...so anyway, he got a look at our bunker where we play and work on our terrain, claimed it a waste of space, a dump, and lamented that we had too much free time (a whole 2 to 4 hours every few days). We had to trash the vast majority of our foam and cardboard terrain materials, pack up our paints, brushes, and half-assembled models and put them away in lockers, and generally make it a huge inconvenience for us to do anything in there. There is a chance that it may become such a pain to deal with the routine that some guys may stop going in there, especially with the end of our allowable time to use the bunker for our own coming to a close at the end of the deployment.
As far as how this will effect everything in the next month and a half that we will continue to play and use our models, I don't know. Hopefully it does not become non-conducive to fun and we will continue to spend time in there. I'm still trying to feel out the situation and I cannot tell where the near future is going.
I ordered a Balttefoam Pack 720 with pluck foam trays so that I can ship my fragile pewter pieces out of here without them getting tore up. My monolith still will likely have to be bubble-wrapped and shipped in it's own seperate box, but that's fine. I'm not going to pay for Battlefoam's monolith tray if it takes up an entire Pack 435 just to hold the tray.
EDIT: I sat down with XO's SM and my Tyranids codexes. Drop pods are Dedicated Transports, and Rules as Written, Dedicated Transports are never mentioned to not count for a kill point. Tourneys may have their own house rules, but the book is the book. Mycetic Spores do not have the Dedicated Transport listed anywhere in their entry in the codex or their FOC breakdown, and are classified as a Monstrous Creature regardless, and therefore cannot be immobilized. They simply have an "immobile pod" special rule that states that they can not move, or run, or move to assault. As drop pods are vehicles, they can be immobilized, and the codex states that they "count in all respects as a vehicle that has suffered immobilized on the vehicle damage chart.
...
My point is that both count for kill points. The Drop Pod may be worth half points for a Moral Victory (which is bogus, because the SM player is paying the points for a vehicle's calculated value as it is allready immobile), but is still worth a full kill point. Mycetic Spores come into play as monstrous creatures with all of their wounds, and so do not suffer a penalty to moral victory.

Sorry to hear you got stuck with Gunney from Platoon... sounds like you guys are in for some rough road ahead as far as playing/working on models goes.
Love this thread BTW.
Good to hear that our guys overseas can still spend a little time just living life and trying to have some fun in a crazy situation.
Good luck in the future, and it sounds like your imminent release couldn't come soon enough... sorry for the guys who have longer commitments, because it doesnt look like 40k is on your new Sgts. favorites list.

Ah man that sucks that you wound up with one of those First Sergeants. I don't get it. The First Shirt is there to make sure the enlisted guys are doing okay and staying out of trouble, yet it seems that outside the Air Force, half the people who wind up as First Sergeants are huge douches who go out of their way to make their people miserable. I mean for the love of God, the Army keeps looking for ways to improve morale, but no one seems to be looking at the fact that too often the leadership is allowed to treat their troops like crap until someone flips out. Maybe I'm just a dumb Airman, but it seems pretty obvious to me. Being treated like real human beings and not getting screwed with 24/7 is a great way to keep your people happy.
/rant
Anyway, hope you guys can tough it out till you get back home.
In regards to painting your 'Nids, I had the same issue painting my Termagants. Its hard to make them really stand out all that much. What I did was paint a lot of gloss varnish over their black armor plates (did this on all my nids). Also, Gaunts are usually taken in huge swarms. In this way, its not so much the individual guants that stand out, so much as it is this huge mass of shiny black bugs. It actually reinforces the idea of the Tyranids being a single collective swarm rather than a group of individuals. I saved the fancier details and "stand out" things (red trimmed claws, etc) for my bigger bugs.
Hang in there man!

Ugh, I hate first sergeants that act like you are still in basic - had that for a while. Luckily he got caught going at it with the ops sgt, so we didn't have a top for like 3 months. Gotta love it. I tried to get some GW going while I was over there back in '05, but there was zero interest.

Sorry to hear about the new SGT. I know the feeling when they forget about taking care of the troops. The bunker was a place to get away for awhile. I hope someone will try and talk with him about down time or soliders will go crazy. I was told once that people above you will fire you , but people below you will end you career. take care and stay safe.

I've never understood it when officers and NCOs act like phalluses to their men. If I were in a situation where some guys were trying to kill me, I'd make sure the guys trying to watch my back (who are all armed) at respect me, if not like me.

I love the wing's on the XO's chapter master. I'd like to see a bit more depth on the white of the body, but overall it is ace.
I never understand why anyone treats their co-workers or subordinates badly. I certainly don't understand it when at some stage in the future he may find himself in a situation where you have to decide whether to risk your own life to save his...

Thank you all for the kind comments and suggestions on my chapter master! I'll get the nerve up one day to attempt a wash to put a little more shading on the details. The good thing is I have a squad of Vangaurd Marines to practice on! I've been busy lately and my CM is about the only thing I've worked on in the last week or so. Again, thank you for keeping up with us over here and for all the support!

Updates!
Yesterday me and E played a game. Due to a serious deep strike mishap on my part, the game quickly deteriorated to Necron Phase out on turn 5. But I kinda wanted that... my much more demanding work schedule has me set to not be able to start games as early as I used to, and by the time me and E got started and had our stuff on the table, it was two hours until bedtime. And getting E to finish his move turn with 60 infantry models on the board requires and act of congress.
Games Workshop packages arrived today, and I received a box full of destroyers. Specifically, enough destroyers to fill two squads of both regular and heavy destroyers. XO picked up another land raider, a land raider conversion kit, a couple of lascannon marines, and a box set of "emporers chosen" or something to that effect of space marines.
I ordered a battlefoam case, the 720 with pluck foam, though I think I may have mentioned that already. However, I found out today that when I had thought my order didn't go through with their website (I figured due to my Iraqi IP address), it actually did. And so when I called them to get the same product shipped, this monday I was billed for two, from two different "Battle Foam" origins on my ledger. The XO said he would buy one off me at what I paid for it if I decide to let it go once it gets here.
But, that is it for ordering parts for me and the XO for the rest of the deployment. We are getting too close to packing it up to be able to realistically tackle huge projects. We've all still got stuff on the way, but no more buying.
I am working on my Destroyer Lord. I didn't get to do anything today, because it's the U.S. Army birthday and they handed out 2 beers for everyone of age. On an empty stomach after 7 months of being sober, 2 beers will give you a decent buzz, so I hung out with friends and chilled like the good times. Plus, E and Early were out.
We're definitely not done yet... We've got another month at the least and I will stay with it until the end. Keep your eyes open for more games, and my finished Destroyer Lord.

Well, it's been an interesting couple of days.
Because my work schedule, and everyone else's, has gotten so much more frantic, the couple of games I have played in have had to be either rushed or cut short. In fact, one night the generators went out so we were playing by flashlight for a couple of hours.
We have been doing some painting, and we've got another regular, 2nd platoon's Lieutenant, who comes in and takes models people don't feel like painting and assembles and paints them. But he isn't interested in the game (yet).
I've got some pictures of what we've been working on, so here's some eye candy for you. Remember these are clickable thumbnails.
The XO has finished a terminator, and managed to use a magnet piece to make his helmet detachable. The marbled texture on the hammer head is pretty cool, I think. He's been working on it for about four days straight. It's one of two thunder hammer terminators in his assault termie squad, and of course he's as proud as ever. He should be. Those terminators tear my necrons a new one unless I'm going at them with a warscythe or a c'tan.
Here's my finished Destroyer Lord, and boy was keeping this guy's upper body together tough. Particularly the green rod and pommel part. The torso didn't want to fit too well on the destroyer spine, either. But this is what I've got. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I love the way it looks.
The XO and I are open to all comments, including constructive criticism. Let me know what you guys think of my Destroyer Lord and his Terminator.

Love the terminator and the great use of magnets! The destroyer lord oozes menace, looking down on his prey as he prepares to blast them. Quite interesting paint schemes I've seen throughout this thread and I love the creativity and color use on everything! What did the XO use for the helm? I likey!

Very nice Destroyer Lord! I really like the golden Scarab bracer on his arm. Personally I went with the Warscythe and Res Orb on mine, but then again I wasn't really able to test its effectiveness because he gets flattened right off the bat every time I use him. lol

That terminator helm... how did you make it?? It's so mesmerizing... I think I'll join the army if it makes you that good with green stuff... Huh?!? sorry, kind of lost my senses for a moment there. I like the blue trimming on the destroyer lord, and the dark eyes stand out nicely. If you feel up to it, I'd put small green dots in the sockets to make the "green glowing undead menace look" from the ribcage come into the face. Also, once again if you're confident, I would take a brush with a little bit of silver on it and lightly pass it over the torso. Don't press down enough for it to go into the ribcage crevices, just enough so that the brush glosses right over them. While the glowing ribcage looks cool, the paint looks a tad sloppy (it could just be the camera/pic, though).
As for that nice termie, I'd do a little drybrushing in certain areas, to give the white a little more character. Use a light brown and maybe some black.
I also like how the destroyer lord's edges are worn away. It's a good look.

The XO made a removable termy helmet? Excellent modeling skill right there. He may want to run a wash over the fleshy bits to add some definition to the face, but it looks pretty good as-is (I'd recommend a watered-down ogryn flesh wash if available).
You have a very steady hand when it comes to painting those blue edges on the destroyer! I like it having gloss to it, as it reminds me of a car's finish. I think it would be hiliarious if somebody would model a necron using a miniature tub of turtle-wax on the Destroyer Lord's finish!

Awesome work. I bet it is hard as hell to plan ahead when you make your orders. BTW as a career Marine 1st Sgt's like that generally go away, A. they get promoted or B. they get gak canned because they fail to look out for the men they are entrusted with. I hope it works out, I bet that bunker is the best morale booster you all could have out there.

Really like the warscythe as well.
The destroyers will work, they can stay out of range and pour on the fire.

It was hard for me to decide, because I do love rez orbs. But I thought the scarab arm looked fantastic. I made a tactical decision that a rez orb on a destroyer lord wouldn't be that useful because with a warscythe he will be separated from all of his destroyer friends, and since they all have T5, lascannons can't prevent their WBB rolls anyway. I think the only thing a rez orb would do to a necron lord would be give it the chance to rez if dropped by a power weapon, but that's 40 points that can go elsewhere. But really, the scarab bracer arm was cosmetically preferable. If someone wants to cry about WYSIWYG if I play him with an orb I'll just cellophane tape a dried ball of green stuff to his fist.
Thanks for the advice guys. And yeah, the torso does look a little sloppy. I try to clean that stuff up but I have a REALLY hard time with mettalic paints clotting up as they dry. As for the eyeballs, there's green in there, but it's hard to make it stand out in such recessed sockets without filling all of it with green. I guess the camera didn't get a good angle. I often have those problems with necron eyes.

I must say. Even though I'm not a military man I have a great respect for those who choose to put themselves into that type of career. All the best to all you war-gamers that don't just play with toy soldiers but do the real thing. And everyone doing their thing in their respective country's armed forces.
Also. Have you considered taking a normal lord with the res orb AND a destroyer lord to wreak havoc ahead of the main advance? It can be a wicked combination.

Seriously, the XO HAS to tell me how he made that helm. I want it.
Is there any way that you could place or chop up a rez orb so that it would fit into the chest cavity? That way you could play it as a rez orb or not, as it would look cool.
Or maybe beneath the pommel?

He tells me that the helm was from a Defiler, with the horns cut off, and the crest was from an IG banner that E had. The magnet was simply a fragment of a chopped-up circular magnet glued to the back of a knick-knack, obviously meant for a refrigerator or something like that. He glued one fragment with super glue to the helmet, and one to the opening for the face on the armor.
If I decide to put a rez orb on that destroyer lord, it will either go on the pommel or on his free hand in a way that looks not slowed. So probably his pommel...
Oh. And isn't what I've got on that destroyer lord a warscythe? I thought the other one was a staff of light, as it seemed to be able to shoot. I thought the green rod in the back instead of at the "barrel" meant that it was a warscythe.
24105
Post by: Corvus
Nah staff of light has the little blades around the end, warscythe has one big blade. If you look in the codex there' a section that details various necron weapons and has pictures to help clarify.

Diesel don´t fall in the WYSIWYG trap, there are a lot of weapons, equipment upgrades, psyker powers that do not have an equivalent miniature wise. So if you say that in your army Warscythes are like X and you have a consistent and distinctive design for X (a light spear or whatever in your case) it should be good enough for most players, and those who do not agree are not worth of the headache you´ll have playing against them. I ended up clipping the end off and crazy gluing the warscythe end on it. So it's going to have two green rods. I'll post another picture when I finish it.
Another guy bought a huge box of Blood Angels and his own supply of tools and paint. I'm starting to lose count of how many of these guys we have playing now...
E is learning how to pulverize me. He drops my destroyers with lascannons so that I lose my fast attack, and then even with my squads spread out as far as possible and still in coherency, his Manticore and plasma LRs tear me a new one as I try to advance in range. I'm going to think on how beat those tanks...
And losing 3 each of H. Destroyers and Destroyers before I even get to move has not helped my confidence in that unit.

Post by: reds8n
..Well if the dice are hating you there's not a lot you can do, but try putting them in reserve maybe if this keeps happening.
Or maybe when you deploy them intermix the units to give them a cover save.

lol that's just what happens to Necrons these days. Their best anti-tank (heavy Destroyer) has a nice gun and is fast but just too fragile to stand up to the armored slugging matches that characterize 5th Edition. Same with regular Destroyers. Awesome unit, but a tempting target. All it takes is one Str 9 AP 2 large blast and half the squad is gone with no hope for WBB.
Cannot wait for Necrons to get a new codex.

I just got done playing a 2000pt. match against E and it came to a draw on turn 6 with Seize Ground. His Vendettas gave me the same problem with my Destroyers, but I actually did pretty well after losing them.
I'll try to post the batrep tomorrow, but it's really late here and I need to get some sleep before I have to work. I know we've been slacking on the pictures and Batreps, but I'm going to try to pick up the pace before we have to pack everything up. It's just hard with as late and spontaneous as the games run. after turn one it was a pretty fair exchange, his landraider took out a vandetta my other vandettas killed a few raptors, and my command squad with a lascannon got a good roll and destroyed the landraider which exploded and killed a few berserker, his defiler dropped a few guys in my 30 man platoon not many.my snipers on the ridge dropped one possesed marine.the manticore rolled horrible and continued too the whole game.i learned to sit back put out lots of rounds and soften all targets before i make any tactical moves.it works..lol

Post by: E_ninja13
at the end of turn 2 i have given his daemon prince 2 wounds.i killed most of his regulars chaos marines down by the rhino.his raptors make to my platoon and lock them into combat, his possesed marines make to the the fight also and and wipe out my platoon.leaving only a aspiring champion and 1 possed marine left after the exchange.my vandettas immobolize the rhino.i deepstriked a stortrooper squad with melta guns behind the defiler, they damaged a weapon i took of his lascannons to save my vandetta.my stormtroopes then get demolished.bless they`re brave souls, may they walk with the emperor.i rolled so terrible this turn.

Post by: E_ninja13
at the end of turn 3,i wipe out his daemon prince that thing is a pain in the cheeks.his regular marines made they`re way to my vetsquad, the kill all but my heavy weapons team, they fail a morale test and fall back to the edge of the table.they are saved from falling off the table by a successful order of get back in the fight.i drop storm troopers in the middle of the bord to support my efforts against his charge and the did some decent dammage.the defiler is stunned.the rhino became usless without a weapon.one of his squads fails a morale check and lost over half the squad and falls back.his aspiring chapion and single space marine scale the wall and lockinto close combat with my vet squad and wipes the out,the rconsolidate towards my command squad.
no pic for turn for but he deepstriked terminators right by my downed vandetta and and wiped out my last heavy weapons team.WAIT BUT THEN! t- minus 5,4,3,2,1 we have liftoff! the deathstrike missle launches my ace in the hole and nails the terminator squad right where the good lord split`em and wipes them off the map.booyakasha!and for his retaliation move his aspiring chapion and solo marine fire at my command squad killing 25% and creed fails his morale check and falls back off the board.i know lame right,i looked all over my codex for fearless with creed and kell but notta.

and in the final turn i used my vandettas to finish off as many units as i could,i i can`t remember the exact score but it turned out to be a draw.it was dissapointing but i had fun nontheless.my deathstrike is proving more and more useful.i love it.i have used it 3 times and 3 times it was devastating. the first time it was used in a clean sweep board victory.the last turn if y`all look back in the thread it blew up the last remaining tau crisis suits.in this game it wiped out a squad of terminators that would have wrecked shop on my vandettas, and in the game i play against deisel last night it blew up the monolith with a 6in blast radius also hitting some immortals, and the explosion from the monolith hit the immortals also,it was like art in motion.just beautiful..lol

Hey guys. It's been crazy, and I've gotten a game or two in the past couple of weeks, but I'm usually too disheveled to post pictures. I only get a few hours of free time a day these days, and I hate to spend them waiting for pics to upload and writing down notes from a book.
Well, here's an update on the happenings here...
My battlefoam case has yet to arrive. I did not order a custom tray setup so I had assumed it would be here by now. I am worried... I go on leave on the 7th and I don't think my stuff will be here by then unless we have another mail call perhaps. What I will likely do in that situation is pack all of my miniatures in bubble wrap, and keep them here in my connex room until the cases get here. When I return from leave in 3 or so weeks, I'll put the minis in the case, and ship the case home. Once I go on leave, E goes with me, so that will pretty much end the WH40K gaming until we get back stateside.
I plan on playing a game tonight with Erickson. We're going to try for 2000 points. But my leadership has me attending meetings LATE at night and I don't know if it's going to be a fool's errand to attempt to play. This whole new First Sergeant is really cramping my style.
Other than that, Early got some new Terminators for his space wolves. And here's a picture of a couple of other guys who frequent the bunker. The one on the right had blood angels, and the one on the left just paints models out of scrap parts to kill time.
It's the home stretch once I get back from leave. We'll have moved into the bunkers to make room for the new unit coming in to relieve us, and start flying out of here shortly after that. Anything that I don't absolutely have to carry with me is being mailed home so I don't have to carry four 60 pound bags in my body armor and helmet through three airports.
I'm still having a hard time with the destroyers, but I plan on giving them a shot one last time.

congrats on the rank up. Keep up the good battle reports and I hope your battlefoam arrives soon. Have you tried deepstriking your destroyers into isolated positions where they can only see one unit, so they can decimate that unit, then move to a different position where they can do another surgical strike while not putting themselves at much risk?

Well, here's the goings-on today:
I've got a particular recurring medical problem that upon an unexpected examination as I was going to get pain medication for, the medical officer determined (after some very painful procedures) that the infection causing the problem has likely resurfaced, and so I was IV'ed a bag of levaquin and enough valium to pacify a bison. That put me out for the majority of the day until I woke up this evening and did a little bit of painting on my models.
I am running into an issue that has always plagued me when I try to paint the inside ribs of my necrons green: the paint clings to the edges of the inside ribs and leaves open holes in the paint coat where the drying paint has separated due to viscosity. Multiple coats only make the problem look less pronounced. I need to try to find a way to fix that.
I did have a match with Erickson last night. I've got to be frank with you guys... I'm having a hard time motivating myself to post batreps these days because by the time I get done with a match and get to my room I'm already past my bedtime. Plus it's almost always the same board, just with the terrain mixed around. I keep trying to convince E to play against me on the lava board, but he isn't having it. Perhaps because it would be such a pain to move that huge sheet of cardboard and terrain parts over to the primary table.
Here is an image of my necrons clambering between ruins to get at the command squad in support of the wraiths attacking Commisar Yarrick. His stormtroopers stand to halt their advance.
I had suggested to E that if posting full-picture batreps are such a pain, then we could at least post dynamic pictures of our game. We'll see how well it sticks.
Also, I comissioned E to use one of my destroyers to make the model's hand give the middle finger like he had done for one of his models and one for the XO's. He's supposed to do it tonight as I type this. I figured I have 10 destroyer models now, and it won't be a huge deal if one modding experiment turns out bad. But E is particularly good at modding, so I'm not worried.
As expected, now that enough players have joined the flock, we've got more than our share of Imperium armies... E's IG, XO's Space Marines, Early's Space Wolves, and Delaney's Blood Angels. Three SME armies. The few that do or had played non-imperium armies are barely around. The Ork player was moved elsewhere, the Tau player's platoon keeps him far too busy, the Eldar player had to stop before he had even enough models to fill a FOC due to a wrecked car back home, which leaves me with the Necrons. And to an extent, Tyranids. But I'm saving the 'nids for when I get out of the army and move in with Melissa, and the money gets tighter. I'll have a stack of models saved up for when I can't afford any more for some time.
I was lamenting the day before though, about how both armies I've put together lack any squad-based cohesion or teamwork. Some of our imperium players have names and stories and decorations for their squads. I play two armies where the individuals are nothing but cannon fodder. But I definitely wouldn't want to play Space Marines just because I am so tired of them. What does that leave me with? Tau? Sisters of Battle?

3 words: Eldar Aspect Warriors. Eldar in general can be made like you are describing (stories, squads markings, etc.) and they can easily be given background on a model by model basis. Join us and profit! (See, you get pointy ears...) Sucks about the medical problem though :/ I hope that clears up.

I concur with the above post. Eldar aspect warriors are practically designed to be individual, and are fun to play to boot.

Considering you're in Japan, I guess it would be stupid to ask where you got the parts to do that...
I'm curious how other people would use the Eldar in such a fashion to create custom-themed armies.
Miguelsan, your pic reminds me of the stay I had in the Kansai prefecture... quite a unique experience. Too bad I've forgotten almost all the Japanese I had learned since the seven years ago when I went. I was getting pretty good.

Exodite Eldar are pretty cool. Here's a pretty extreme example: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/albinoork%27s_Exodite_army Basically Exodite Eldar live on planets rather than craftworlds. They were some of the very first Eldar to leave before the fall, basically completely forsaking their kin for a simple (yet hard) life. Their tech is at pretty much the same level as craftworld Eldar tech and they come to each other's aid occasionally (especialyl rangers). Though normal Eldar do consider them backwards. More info: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Exodite There are some pretty sick conversions out there of Exodites riding dragons (counts-as fire prism/Khaine) and wood-elf style swordsmen. Actually a good way to think of it: Eldar = High Elves Exodites = Wood Elves If you wanted to stick with craftworld you could always make up your own fluff and color scheme and model some cool stuff. Basically Eldar have no restrictions if you want to model or paint.

Actually the figures are/were made by a European company, Target Games, the game Warzone. For all the nice things you can have in this country, wargame figures and big breasted women are not in the list

Dude Eldar are the shizz. The Fire Prism is one of the most badass tanks ever, with a nice new model to boot. The Avatar of Khaela Motherfething Khaine is also an epic killing machine.
If you want to get past the goofy rainbow colors, all you have to do is create an Exodite army or Outcast Corair fleet that doesnt use traditional Aspect colors and instead wears normal camoflague colors.
Pics related, its some of my Eldar

For this final Iraq batrep,I promise a batrep like you have never seen before.Disected down to the very last detail.(as best as i can)And we should get some really good action pics from this map.
The board is divided into three different types of terrain.at the very top of the pic is desert with a wide open crossing, with our desert buildings and palm groves. The left side is our city scape, last is our lava wasteland on the right.we made a gap nand gave it two road bridge crossings, and in the middle between the mountains is our rope bridge that only infantry can cross.this map will take a few days to play, tomorrow is our deployment day the next few days after the we`ll be gaming. So I hope you stay tuned!Sorry about the lack of material lately.busy busy busy.E from the FOB Echo bunker signing out....

Yeah, we were all inhaling way too much spraypaint fumes last night when building that board. We decided to go for broke, because after this game, all the minis are getting packed up, and all the terrain that was made out of scraps are getting thrown away. As much work as we've poured into them, we really can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars to ship paper, cardboard, and styrofoam scrap heaps home.
I'm going to give a quick shout-out to Sir Mongo, whose Blood Angels issue of White Dwarf was sent to me and arrived yesterday! It's really appreciated. Delaney (Blood Angels player) especially liked it. Now I'll just have to look and see if there's a necron back-issue. XD
I'll definitely look into Eldar, now. At least, the conversion kits available. Maybe I'll just have to buy extra head bitz and stay away from those goofy headresses. If you have any good links to sites that sell other themed conversion kits, please post.
Miguelsan: Yeah, I used to adore Japanese women. But for as beautiful as they are, and as much as I pined for that physical aspect... the dozen or so I've known were outrageously hard to relate to or be good friends with, let along get a serious connection. It always stopped at the fair-weather friend level. I guess in the past few years since I've joined the army, I grew up more and found that the surface was nice, but no one stays young and beautiful forever. You only live like that for a fraction of your adult life. You've got to learn to be able to live with her... and yourself. My womanfriend now is both beautiful and, more importantly, my best friend. But the proportions issue you mentioned doesn't bother me... I'm not a fan of sagging, and with chestiness and age you get more of both. ...went off on a rant, there.
So basically this is the Superbowl of the FOB Echo WH40k games. My only regret is that the XO isn't here to play in it. Because out of all the players, he's probably the best. But we're under a time crunch and shortly (or immediately) after this game we have to pack every 40K piece we've built in this place and send it home or throw it in the dumpster. We're debating on Annihilation or Seize Ground, and how many turns we should extend the game to. We're going to be spending three turns likely just getting guys in position. We had discussed extending the deployment zone to 18"... or playing a match where the last team with a fightable unit on the board wins, no matter how many turns it takes. With a map this large, there's a lot to go over, a lot to think about to make sure we do this right. If any of you have any suggestions, please let us know.
By the way, I need to pick up a good Nintendo DS game to keep me occupied in transit back home for leave and then back here. I'll try to pick one up in the BIAP or Kuwait PX. Anyone know of a really good DS game that I can sink some serious hours into? I'm considering the new pokemon games except I hear they're pretty much a step backwards from the previous Diamond and Pearl games.

I just got back from leave. Back in Iraq now, in transit to Echo.
Melissa tells me my models arrived at her place in the Battlefoam case but my Nightbringer still broke off an arm somehow. ARRRGH! I want to fix it SOOO bad. It was so perfect. I need to figure out why it happened.
With all of my models back in the U.S., all that's really left is Erickson's (who is currently waiting to get to base with me) and the XO's, who is likely waiting for another battle or two with E.
I'm not sure where this thread will go from here. Hopefully E will have a couple of more battles to post before it's all over, but if things turn out the way Melissa is indicating, I may start another thread in a while about me teaching her to play and getting her set up on her own army. I tried convincing her to play something besides Necrons (which she claims is her favorite) and the only thing she seems to really like is the kroot (warriors, hounds, krootox, ect.)... I may have to loan her my 'crons while I build Tyranids. And then after that...? Death Corps of Krieg IG, I guess...
Sorry it's been so long. E and I have both been enjoying our time off. Two weeks getting hammered and watching Mystery Science Theatre 3K with Melissa and other fun things pretty much tied up all of my free time. I wanted to do as little as possible and drink my share of booze. Plus she doesn't have a computer at her place (which I will rectify when I get out of the Army and move in with her), so I couldn't check the forum. I don't know if I would have if I could.
Anyway, stand by for some kind of news on E and the XO. Maybe I'll have some more stuff for you. And E's got a ton of pics he still hasn't posted.

I'm back in FOB Echo. Finally. Remind me no to re-enlist.
I guess if there's still going to be a couple of games, I'm going to try to learn another army. Maybe IG or SM. Tau? Tau seem pretty complex for just a "pick up and play" game. From what I've seen, their wargear is insane to keep track of.
I got here late as heck and I'm not sure what the big plans are, since I need to coordinate with all of the other 40K players. If not, I may just get my kicks on Vassal. But the only codex I know virtually by heart... or at all... is the Necron one. And I'd like to branch out. And in my opinion, something is lost in Vassal... maybe a third demension? Hand-crafted terrain seems, like your models, to be an extension of you to love.
Melissa is totally supportive of me setting up a game board in her (soon to be our) house. But to save space for both of us, I need to think of a way to make the board easily detachable. Perhaps I'll just by a sand terrain mat from a HobbyTown and just store "hills" and "ruins" and "necron crystals" seperately. I don't even know if she's got a 6x4 ft. table anywhere in the house. Or anything remotely that big... And I'm going to have to watch out that her cats don't take off with the plastic minis. Heh heh.

We're trying to get everyone into the swing. Our tables dismantled and our bunker commandeered for a layout, we're kinda trying to see if we can pick up some of the pieces and have some fun before we all get sent home.
The plan is to get my 'nids to the barracks they will inevitably stick me in, and work on that. Maybe play a few games. And the Atlanta Games Workshop is near where I will be moving, so I think I will continue to meet up with the XO, E, and maybe some of the others to play in Atlanta long after I am done with the army.
I'm trying to convince the XO to set up a game with me so that he can play his SM army and I can grab someone elses' army... maybe Delaney's Blood Angels. We'll see. I doubt it will be pic-worthy... we threw out all of our terrain when I went on leave, because we thought I wouldn't be coming back here.

Sweet jeebus, that lascannon looks good. How on earth did you do the buttons?
But yeah, the matte OD is awesome. E tells me he is going Elysian just because he likes the air assault. Odd, with him being an Armor specialist.
EDIT: Oh. I bought Tyranids as I am sure you all remember but kept getting so chewed up. I knew that to keep a versatile 'nid army would cost me a small fortune so I switched to developing Eldar. Though I will take some poetic liscences with their clown-ish helmets.

Hey guys. Here's some pics of the Eldar I have been working on, just in case you're interested.
BTW, the reason I stopped doing necrons is: with the exception of The Deciever or additional monoliths, I'm pretty much full of models, and secondly - I'm tired of getting my rear handed to me because 5th edition rules made it so hard to kill vehicles with anything but a monolith. And playing against guys like E... that's a pretty big deal. So I went with one of the "main" armies. Here's a couple of pics. The finished model is in rough draft so don't get too crazy on the critism... it's a working paintjob combined with my struggles to get white paint to handle well.
EDIT: PLEASE please please keep in mind that the bottom mini is just an example of paint scheme. Honestly if I wanted to show off paint job, would would have not been rough draft, the rez would be much lower, and the pic would have been further away. I just wanted you guys to get the general idea. And let me know if you do/don't like it and why.

Thats a different colour scheme to what you normally see for eldar, diesel. I like it. The white is very crisp.
Its good to see that you guys made it back home safely and still going strong with 40k and the custom terrain

I'm not done with the one in the middle.
Of course, the first two there are the first two I've painted so they have different bases because I wasn't sure which one to pick. The one on the left is based with Gale Force 9's fine basing grit (no paint on it), a bit of winter grass, and then two layers of snow. The one on the right is based with a reflective silver micah flake paste and then covered in snow again. I'm deciding on which avenue I should go for, or if they both look horrible.

Any suggestions on what I should paint the "runic" antennas on the back of the Heavy Weapons team operator should be? I'm thinking the same red as is on the weapons.
I'll definitely post pics once I get a good group together, but I am still waiting on opinions on the basing terrain.

I couldn't tell you, because my collection started out there by ordering it through the website. If I were you, I would leave the models with family or a trusted friend, in already sealed and padded containers to ship. That way, if you find people who are interested (and a big enough place to do it), you can get them shipped - or leave them safe at home if not. Yhat you can get them to you in (mostly) one piece. I say mostly because once the packages leave the states, they're tossed around like garbage. So your pewter minis may need to be pinned if you want them to survive the trip.
As for if you can find it out there... well, all of the 8 or so people who got into it when we were there did it largely because of the interest shown by myself, E, and another guy named Kehrer. Once people saw we had a huge place all to ourselves where people weren't bothering us - and a hobby to do besides watch bootleg Iraqi movies - people flocked to it. I guess it helped a lot that the single guys were getting paid fairly well and had nothing to spend the money on. There was no real chance meeting of 40K fans across the battalion - it was really just E and the XO having some models they were assembling just for that portion of the hobby, so I jumped in and so did everyone else. If you want to drag people in, I'd say order some new models and tools once you are out there - just for fun assembly - and people will either recognize it or ask questions and get into it.
micahaphone wrote:

Funny story. After playing non-painted nids a couple of times and getting my arse handed to me, I kind of went to Eldar. The "alien" paintjob just didn't work out for me... the solid black and glossy look just seemed... bad. I went with a more organic, perhaps zerg-like paintjob, but I only did one hormagaunt. It's not based and I probably could have done some touch-up work, but I do like the way it looks. Check it out:

I do have a thought on the arctic basing. You may want to try going with the sand and grass that you used with just a light dusting of the snow and a dry brushing of water effects to make it look more like the soil is frozen rather than just covered with snow.

Diesel: Sorry to hear that 'nids didn't work out for you. Glad to hear that you found an army that you like! to be fair, that hormanengaunt is pretty good looking. The Eldar camo is cool, look in the P&M Tutorial section for some tips on doing snow bases. They certainly helped me.
E: I love the way you do your camo, and your models look great. However, the shells laying on the ground just look too shiny and fresh for such a grim model. Perchance you could drybrush some black, or a brown wash over the pile on the ground?
Your flamer troop also looks good. Maybe try putting some black paint in the holes on the muzzle, and drybrush some black on the end so it looks used an scorched.

A quick note on my Eldar attempts.
White has... pretty much proven itself extremely difficult to work with. I don't know if it's a fickle paint to produce, but GW's Skull White just turns out to be a huge pain. Any personally applied coats with a brush requires multiple of the same to cover up any other color, and end up resulting in lumpy, uneven coats. I simply could not figure how how I would use such a scheme to paint vehicles. It's tough for me... I love the "tough", "army-like" colors of the IG but I supremely wanted the stats of the Eldar units. Plus, I would be avoiding the pains of working with white.
So, after days of wondering and stressing if my effots would turn out well, I decided that if I could not make up my mind, then they obviously were not right for me. So I tossed all of the models in a bath of denatured alcohol, and there they will sit for the next couple of days.
But now I have to decide on a color scheme. And believe me... It kindof feels like I can't win. I can't see any of these guardian themes being transferred to a vehicle. Or if they could, they would look crappy on an Eldar model. Look at the pics below, for instance. The geen/black one looked kind of tactical, but just didn't flaunt the eldar guardians like I would have loved. Maybe I'm missing something. But I WANT to make it work because I know somewhere in this gourd of mine, it can.
The bottom pic shows my (current) idea of what will work the best and still be original (Ulthw'e and Beil-Tan are awesome, but I'm no copycat).
Oh... and you know how I came to this decision? I called Melissa into my room and told her of my dellima, and when she suggested mettalic, I told her it would not be continuity with Eldar fluff, read her the exerpt on guardian armor, and she said, "Well, I know you are trying to steer clear of the fruity colors... but that description sounds like that's what you would be stuck with." And then she endured a 30 minute session with me going over my paint set and picking out colors.
Or maybe I'm just whipped.

I do not know what it is with white, but I have the same problems as you, and do not use GW's paints. It is just a hard color to paint with it seems.
I personally like the first color scheme, the second one looks a little too fruity, like a Power Ranger or something. You should just go with what you want, and not feel like you are forced to paint fruity colors by the fluff. There are some Eldar craftworld color schemes from Dawn of War that are not fruity at all, one being black and white (forgot name ).

HUGE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!
A long time ago, when things were brewing between future legends... There was...
diesel7270 wrote:A shipment of mail came in today and XO and Kehrer got new units in. Everyone's been spending the last few days painting (or not being around too much).
diesel7270 wrote:Kehrer hopped on photoshop and took a planet image from google search. I really like it.
diesel7270 wrote:Barnett is the kind of guy to waste his money on any bandwagon he can jump on, so he bought a bunch of Orks so that he could play with Erickson. And Kehrer, sensing another nerdy pastime taking root, bought some Tau.

E_ninja13 wrote:Turn 3 Kehrer is not happy...
diesel7270 wrote:On to today's update... Kehrer got several new Crisis Suits.
diesel7270 wrote:I've informed my Tau player of his need to diversify, but he refuses. Whatever. He's either adapt or lose. Or adapt *and* lose. Heh heh. He relies heavily on his battlesuits, specifically broadsides and squads of them for assault. I think he truly believes that there's got to be some *true* Tau setup that he can use to win.
KEHRER.
Iraq: http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/ir0.jpg
Now: http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/rl.jpg
A man of mystery and shadow, hiding in the backgroud... Surely another dweeb.
...and enough third person, I finally jumped on and made an account. While we've lost Diesel to distance (he is no longer in the army), we've picked up Delany (blood angels), and you still have "E" Erikson ( IG), and recently re-emerged Kehrer (Tau) meanwhile all others have left the cause (perhaps a good thing, some of the guys definately needed a break) while some have turned around and decided now is the best time to get down and dirty.
Terrain... We didn't bring ANY of it home. Now its a race to put what we've learned to use. E's going nuts on the custom pieces while I've sunk some bling to get us a few ForgeWorld and GW terrain pieces. Atop that, I spent the weekend cutting a game board and buying a grassland base for it. PICS TO COME!!
I can't recall how much paints I've picked up and what all E's working with, we're really going to try to bring out a jungle-like landscape this time.
As for the Tau, they're here but I bought Barnett's orks from the XO. I had too much fun working with them that I bought more, eventually leading up to a small sized army. (Nobz are so freakin cool to customize!) I try to play O'Shovah, who runs on "Breakaway Faction" rules and forces the use of a lot of battlesuits, while lacking Kroot. I still have one Hammerhead that I play, a full Broadside squad with Targetting Arrays, and 3x Sniper Drone Teams for the heavy damage. Hence Diesel always wondered why I couldn't play like most other Tau players.
Prior to this whole ordeal, I was so horrible at painting that you likely couldn't trust me to stay in the numbers. I've gotten incredibly better and now I've been deperately trying to fight a paint scheme I want to try for Tau.
Since we're focusing on primarily jungle and grassland-like board + terrain, I landed on a forest green camo (catachan grn = base + gretchin grn = highlights) and hope to design a guillie-suit version for the broadsides, hammerhead, and both firewarrior troops. PICS TO COME!!!
The one thing that attracted me especially to 40k was the fact that you could customize beyond what you could ever do with wargear provided in any of the Dawn of War games. In fact, the main joy to making these armies has been in assembling them. I have a few pics to show as examples:
My Custom O'Shovah
http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/a1.jpg
http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/a2.jpg
Made from a combination of his kit and parts from Crisis Suits from both ForgeWorld and GW.
My Custom Broadside Shas'vre
http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/c1.jpg
http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/c2.jpg
Made from a combination of Crisis Suit parts and Broadsides from both ForgeWorld and GW. The pilot is female, the legs are reposed, and there is the use of a drone support to compensate.
My Custom Shas'O Commander
http://twdmechdesigns.com/dakka/wip_strkmstr_krnr.jpg
Now completely painted over for the new scheme. Yes that's a human (Gue'la) you're able to see through the battlewound in the chest (the new paint scheme will look 100% better in detail).
And now one of my completed Crisis Shas'vre
LOTS AND LOTS MORE to come. I'm going to talk to E and see if we can get another thread going. Things are bound to get pretty crazy 'ere soon...

@Kehrer. Hi and welcome to dakka. I like the jungle camo for your tau, its not the normal crisp painting you normally see on tau. It helps identify them as farsight's splinter faction. I really like the ork head on the suit, also tieing into the farsight theme. Nice use of the forgeworld kits. Keep up the good work!

Yep. I may have a hard time matching colors exactly. For some reason the colors by name are somewhat lighter in shade on the program. They do other "standard" soldier types as well, from what I recall. EDIT: actually, I think they only do Eldar Guardian and a Fire Warrior. You can find the webpage at
http://www.freewebs.com/grimdarkness/painterprogram.htm
I'm gonna get on painting the 2nd paint scheme on another guardian and be sure to post it, but I was curious... is there a way to get a semi-gloss varnish? Would mixing satin and gloss varnishes not deteriorate the cohesion of the result? I'd rather not run out and try to find another set of Acrylic glosses. Satin simply looks like "normal" paint.

E suggested that I mottle the colors I was planning to do, like Craftworld Alaitoc. Here is my prototype result, without highlighting or doing the jewel. And the facemask was half-assed because I hadno GW yellow and Melissa's acrylics were ultra-thick for canvas painting. Watering them down didn't help them from drying craggy, so I stopped there. Opinions on the colors or mottling? EDIT: I am having a HELL of a time getting this camera to not take crappy pictures, all of the sudden. Of course, I have some rough edges to fix up, but it's a start on how I'm almost certain these guys are going to look. I'm probably going to keep the mottled breakup on the foot soldiers only, and not the vehicles. That's up to debate, though. The face, sand base, and some weapon details need some work, ect. I am debating on going with a heavily grassy base now, or a blasted earth the same as E is doing. Grassy will make more sense but by choice I almost never play a straight grass map... it's just always what everyone else has because it's easy to build. So that's what its on my mind right now.
I am also trying to figure out a way to build a flag or standard... either with a standard bearer or a meaningless base with a flag on it. And how on earth the parts itself will be constructed.
Let me know if you have any suggestions on those two things or the paintjob of the guardians.

Post by: diesel7270
I think the consistent problem with my pictures turning out crappy is that this house was made in the 1940's and my girl is too cheap to buy anything but low-watt light bulbs. The lighting is horrible in every room, and distinctly yellowed.
But you can see here where I used magnets to make the Guardians' weapons platform have an interchangeable barrel instead of having to buy 5 different platforms.
Where it gets iffy is the paintjob (again.) I thought the red-pink barrel made the whole thing look like covenant technology but Melissa informs me it just looks like a cat's *thingy*... So... another color, then. I've still got to mottle the color scheme, I suppose, do the base right. The peg at the bottom sits in it lopsided for some reason. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, E's got no internet and Kehrer's chain of command are a bunch of slavedrivers, so you probably won't see them that much for a few days.
