graven - Cheers! Deserts, scavengers, crashed ships, odd junk.....sounds great.

dog - Good to see you bud, thanks for popping in! Many thanks for all the kind words, glad it all moved you to comment this time round - life gets busy, so no worries on lack of previous comments, we all do that at some point. I'm not so sure my GS work is that good - just that Nurgle gives you plenty of room to manoeuvre in

Theo - I'll take that Don't think he'll be actually from Necromunda itself, but I reckon that's certainly the right sort of environment. I'm actually thinking of doing a few guys, sort of a trade caravan. Just something a bit different.

So pretty sure this is the final setup (although I spot one missing pack)

Switched my idea of leather reins for a chain, but think that may swap back. Originally the seat was still visible, not so covered in packs, but as I went for a more overloaded look I decided to make it not a mount and just a mulw. But I think straps may still be better than a chain.
I played a bit with various bits around the 'head' but none of them really worked, likewise with various doodads coming out of the neck hole. I'd still like a small speaker somewhere, that was going to go on the left hand riser, complementing the aerial (which will probably hold a banner) on the right, but adding the shotgun got in the way. It's possible I may lose the spade, and switch the shotgun there to enable the speaker, but that didn't look so good to me. Maybe I'll stick with a couple of armed guards escorting the caravan if I go that way, but it just feels he's have some sort of armament stashed - nomadic waste traders feel like a likely target, so defence is a necessity.

Although I like the chain it gives off a slight captive vibe, switching back to the strap idea might be better giving it more a companion feel. Also have you considered moving the shotgun to a holster strapped to the mules leg ? I just feel being a travelling trader he would want some protection to hand pretty quickly, having it stashed high on top of the mule seems a little inhibiting to his needs.

This is going to be awesome once finished and I get the whole feel of the vignette already, I do understand your wanting to add some guards as protection but I think it would take some of the atmosphere you have created, adding more people would remove that sense of the emptiness and loneliness you get from this, it’s kind of like the mule is not only his transportation for goods but almost a pet offering a form of companionship and comfort.

I have no doubt the chain and strap will switch several times before all is said and done At present my feeling is the chain will get relegated to a purely trade item, wrapped at the back where I previously had another pack, with a worn strap/rein affair to lead by.

Shotgun has been holstered and open, a shptgun, a jezzail, a lasting and a rifle based on the mechanicus weapons, and has been on the leg, on the neck, low at back, high at back, and it's present position Leg and neck looked better when I still had the seat visible, but neither really worked for me. At present it's not far over his head, easily reachabke, and societies mag-locked or will get an open bracket, so is in the hand pretty rapidly, probably faster than from a holster. And although I think it's sensible to be armed in his business, I don't see him as a hardened warrior type, it's just a sensible precaution, it needs to be accessible but not placed to get every edge of can in a situation.

Guards wouldn't be on this base anyway, that's just an idea for expanding this out - trade caravans, nomad scavengers, barter towns and shanty-villes, junkyard robots and muscle-for-hire, all sweating and dying in the dust-laden heat far from the God-emperor's gaze...

Primed them borh, but that's not an exciting pic, so we'll leave that.

Have made a start on IInquisitor Isabella Dominique and her tracking servitor for the first of this year's painting challenges from Paradigm https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/769184.page#10291431
Figured entering these this year might get me a few finished pieces

Agreed - the dude going for a stroll with his... ...pack thing.. IS really creepy. What really makes it for me is his pose, he really looks like he could be, IDK, twirling a cane as he goes?

God I love your insanity, makes me feel at home....just with a better paint job .

Post by: Tyranid Horde

The servitor is definitely a favourite, very grim dark and suitably tentacley!

Really like the trader and his mule, I'm a fan of the chain as you could add some rust to it but the strap might be better! I also like the idea of the mule being overloaded, it adds some emphasis that he's a trader.

Post by: monkeytroll

youwashock - Thanks a lot, let's hope I actually finish these guys

graven - Excellent!

kestral - aww, what's creepy about a harmless masked and hooded trader with his mechanical mule that has chitinous biological legs? Cane-twirling is reserved for the Cirque de Terreur, which almost came out for this round of the painting challengw, except I couldn't find a suitable partner for him.....

Theo - Servo-skulls and Pimp-canes, a popular niche magazine in the underhive.... I'm not sure how you decide I give a better paint job as I never finish anything

TH - Many thanks. Yeah, the mule started out much less overloaded, with a seat/saddle still visible, but he wasn't fully defined as a trader at that point, just a nomadic type. Once I decided he was a trader the load piled up

More weekend working, so no progress on anything, but had a bit of fun playing with some drone ideas.

A little flying helper....I was thinking more jets or turbines than props, so might still put something together for this idea

Whilst contemplating a rotor affair I only wondered about a biological type rotor. Like the idea, but not sure it's right for this little guy.

A little spider-bot action, possibly needs a little camera (or eye) on an arm coming up, possibly in place of the more complex pincer.

Scuttle-bot, scuttle-bot, how I love to watch you scuttle, not.
In a shock turn for me, I'm not sure I'm happy with the tentacles. I think it seemed creepier without them, but I also felt it needed something else. I need to do a bit more on the 'chassis', so I'll leave them for now and see how I feel.

Scuttle-bot is the only one with glue, the others are more along the lines of plastic sketches for potential work later.

Seems a bit big for him. But, if you were to raise him up and put some servo-hauler type arms/grips/pincers underneath for hauling heavy loads....

Good work and ideas.

Yeah, rotary bits in biology tend to be smaller. Like impellers and there's that long tail that rotates on a bacterium (looks like a "normal" tail, but actually rotates).

But you could think of them as an insects legs; 2 sets of 3 wings flapping.

Or, y'know, tyranid nature copying helicopters. [/handwaving]

I like the little crawling ball things.

Good day all, another return from another hiatus...

I won't bother with all the personal stuff over the last year and a bit, but suffice to say I'm in a relatively good lace at the moment, so let's see how this return goes

I joined the Dakka painting challenge - seemed auspicious as the 12 month roll-out starts now. Hoping that it might spur me on a bit to finish some actual painting - we all know that's not my strong point.

So I pulled out an old terminator I never started, and realised that he actually fit in better with the nurgle guys - so that's where he's going:

Hit a slight snag when I attempted to start the layering - I discovered I can no longer focus properly at that distance on that scale. Eye test and new specs here I come. Also ordered some rechargable desk lamps to put around me - extra lighting never hurt.

Looks absolutely horrible, but I don't want to can it at the first hurdle, so the plan is to go with plenty of washes to try and cover the mess and then try some final edge highlights - hoping I can pull them off with the edge of the brush to help fight the lack of focus

Also been putting together some mounts for a nurgly little squad - possibly the maleficent seven..

Looking at the pics I can see various signs that I obviously wasn't focused properly - fingerprints in the putty and mould lines in particular

Also, I started putting paint down but these weren't actually finished - seems it's not just my eyes that are lacking focus I'll probably hold off any further paint until the riders are built, then I can check i I want to go back and add he extras to the mounts...

Not forgetting some of the older stuff, I did a little bit to the nurgle guard...

And a bonus gribbly thing.....

Hopefully see you soon...

Post by: monkeytroll

Arakasi - Thanks, good to be pushing the creative juices back in a 3D fashion. Don't hold much hope of doing a good job with the painting challenge, but will focus on getting it finished - that's always a bonus where I'm concerned

Brian - Thank you!

graven - Always did like those thralls, lots of potential I really need to rationalise my bits, far too much stuff that will never get used (even if it turns out home quarantine is all the future holds), so I'll decline bits for now. I also have a nasty feeling I was supposed to be sending you various bases and bits before I disappeared last time.....

Doc - Good to be back. Let's see if I can stay a while this time

Yorkright - Thanks a lot man!

Syro - Thanks. The mounts were something I started just to see if it pushed me back into modelling, and it seems to have worked, so although I'm not happy with various aspexts, I"m happy in that respect

Snrub - Well, trying to at least

So, although I should be focusing on getting that termie done for the dakka painting challenge I don't have much to show on him. A few washes to try and even out the horrible layering attempt, not worth showing. I did get myself a magnifying headset after reading a few bits on dakka, so see how that helps my poor eyesight. Try and do a full test tomorrow.

What I did do was finish the maleficent seven riders and start on their base colours....

Plenty to do, and a big challenge will be making the flesh tones distinct between rider and mount, as I used the same base tones without thinking

Thanks for popping in, stay safe in these interesting times.

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/03/22 12:29:20

Post by: Llamahead

Honestly they'll be more creepy if their not distinct as if they're gradually blending together into one creature.....

I really love the tentacle legs for a few of those maleficent seven. It really gives them a great gribbly feel along with the sickly paint scheme. The riders have a good variety as well, with some nasty looking weapons, great and mutations. Very, very interesting project here.

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/03/24 23:29:05

Post by: monkeytroll

Llama - Yeah, I get what you're saying. I always liked the fluff around chaos bikers melding with their bikes and I have a few ideas that revolve around similar themes, but I wanted these guys to be different, they are definitely separate entities from their mounts (although one is reaching inside to control it )

Kernel - Thanks, I'll try

graven - Glad you approve.

The Riddle of Steel - Many thanks. I'm all for tentacles, variety and tentacles

So, almost done with the termie for the dakka painting comp :

There's a couple of washes needed in certain places, a couple of bits that really need a tidy up (especially the verdigris), and then maybe some weathering powders. The finish off the base - which is fairly basic, just needs the little pool filling with ickyness.

Obviously I can see loads wrong with it, but at normal viewing distance I'm happy with it. Never really recovered from the mess I initially made, but hey-ho

The magnifying headset I picked up is doing wonders though - really happy I got those, and the extra lights.

A little progress on some of the riders:

And started basing the 2 beasts of nurgle - meaning they're almost done too

May Papa's blessings only touch your models...

I really like these poxwalker conversions, the powerfist fella is my favorite.

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/03/25 21:56:44

Post by: monkeytroll

CB - Thanks for stopping by, and thank you.

Yorkright - Cheers. The powerfist was attached to a poxwalker arm many moons ago, then just sat around waiting for someone who needed it. And that someone eventually turned up.

Still need to finish the termie for the challenge, but did get round to actually finishing of the two beasts. Yes, you read that right...finished models. No, I am not a pod person, it really is me.
Unfortunately I couldn't find my point and click, so phone photos - depth of field is very poor (and I figured puling out my nikon and macro lens would be overkill, that's some hefty sized files).

So, we have Aardslaak and Akkerslaak, the bile vipers - beasts of nurgle.

"Aardslaak is 350 years old, 18 and a half feet long, has red eyes and green armour, likes playing on the beach with infantry and cosy nights in by the acid baths, enjoys digesting entire libraries, and one day wants to start a home for orphaned nuglings."

"Akkerslaak is 290 years old, 18 feet long, has red eyes and yellow armour, says his best attribute is his sense of humour, and wants to work in hospitals."

*Makes note to find camera and lightbox for better pictures, pesky grotlings are probably trying to make a submarine out of it.

Llama - It'll be at the bottom of the marina by now. Doesn't matter how long they've lived here, without supervision they always forget to fully waterproof things....

CB - Then they are just as intended Thanks.

Couldn't find my compact, but my bridge canon shoots macro okay, so got some better shots of the bile vipers.

And finished off the skullhead termie - or thought I had. Turns out the base needs tidying up, so that's a quick task for later. Then get some final pics, but these are good for now:

And a quick gribbly idea...

Want some sort of serpentine 'body' for this one, not sure this is the one though.

Thanks for popping in, mind the slime on the way out.

Post by: monkeytroll

Viterbi - Well, they're working then Cheers!

And actually finished now (apologies not really that different from above, but it's actually finished - that's rare enough on this thread to warrant a bit of spamming I feel

Some of the verdigris is a bit meh, and the various metals could do with a bit more differentiation, but pretty happy with it, especially considering where it was just after starting - that magnifying headset is proving very useful.

Finished putting together the second blight drone (well, there's one bit to be added at the end) and started putting some colour down.

He's a little bigger than the first (which still needs paint finishing..obviously), so the third will be a little smaller - mainly because I'm left with 4 small wings Need to figure out what bits I don't have so I can figure out a supply drop to get me through...

I have started the third, but he's only in bits at the moment, so no pics just yet - and I'm not sure if he's right yet either - it's a bit of a change form the first two, whic isn't a bad thing, jus not sure if I want the 3 to be similar builds or not.

And found the predator laying around, so pushing on with the paint on that too..

Stay safe out there...or rather..in there...

Post by: monkeytroll

Arakasi - Many thanks!

Kernel - Thank you!

graven - Cheers, I'm eyeing up various vehicle parts myself, several ideas floating around - as usual

Some small touches added to the maleficent seven, the predator and the newer blight drone, bu nothing worth posting yet.

Did start toying with some gribblies though.

Couple of servitor types. First one needs some tentacles either side of his head, and something on his back - I have plans for another version with the same body but not the legs, so figuring out who gets what. Second one may not get a 'human' head, and still figuring out best place for some manipulators - may replace the head, may come out the shell, may get attached to a tail mechandrite.

Start of another beast of nurgle, this one slightly smaller than the bile vipers, with a bigger one planned - although the bigger one might become a mount? Still going through heads for this one, not satisfied with any I've found so far - I like the idea of a circular head, also tried a smaller tau drone, but it just doesn't click.

And risked a delve in the room of shame to find something for this month's Dakka panting challenge - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/786953.page#10759720

Toyed with the idea of doing something with the old Sleazy Rider mini:

Fun, but not sure I feel like building a bike at the moment...

So then maybe these three:

Forming part of the Filth Columnists for The Scourge. Although I'm very tempted by just the middle one...

...especially if I can dig out his rifle toting brother....

...who I should have multiple copies of somewhere.

If I can do the pair together that works for me.

Post by: monkeytroll

graven - Indeed he is, loved all these champions when the came out, and still do. First one is my favourite - had an 'oh yes moment when I first tried a leg. Second one needs more work, and probably not that head - I just had an image of the cryx body with four legs, so made that, haven't figure the next part out yet

Doc - Thanking you sir!

Arakasi - Still is

CB - Then they are doing their job

youwashock - They are...see below.

So, girding my loins I risked sanity once more by entering the room of shame, searching for the missing jezzail bearers. Distractions caught my eye a multitude of times, and some even came back with me for further investigation. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack bikes on fire near the squat homeworld, egg walkers glittering in the darkness near the cadian gate.... space marines trying to emulate Iwo Jima, cyborks trying to gain my attention with varying prosthetics, snotlings pumping wagons, resin rogue troopers battling daleks, bags of loot from various Salutes....you get the picture.

But the missing champs could not be found. he chaos gods of lost projects taunted me sorely by letting me find a jezzail arm that I had clipped from one of them, but that was all.

I have to say I was tempted by some of the distractions...a snotling pump wagon or the egg-walker sentinel especially. But I'd already decided in my heart that I anted to do the pair of champions, so the logical... ... thing was to strip the one I had in hand.

My go-to stripper is Big Lindsey ...err, no...Fairy Power Spray - metals, plastics, acrylics, enamels, no problem, but does unbind superglue and sometimes greenstuff. Has to be the original formula, the one they introduced a few years back is no good. But I'm out - haven't stripped a mini in many years, and current situation makes me wonder how easy it will be to find. Same goes for other potential strippers. So what could I possibly use around the home?

Well, hand sanitiser - high alcohol content, and masters brush cleaner? Maybe. A quick scrub with soap an water and toothbrush first - just to start the process, give the solvents somewhere to start. Squeezed some sanitiser onto the mini and gave it a good scrub, then squeezed on some more and wrapped it in a dettol wipe (didn't have a suitable container to hand ), left it for a few hours. Came back and gave it a scrub - job had started. Moved onto the brush cleaner - lathered it on, gave it a good scrub, lathered some more on, left it for a couple more hours. Another scrub, another lather and scrub, then soapy water scrub, and a pretty good job. A few bits left in crevices, but I've given it another lather to sit in overnight, reckon it'll be mint after that.

Not bad for the tools I had I think.

Some minor work to consider - reposing the arm on scythe bro, possibly adding a tube from the hood and a canister on his back, jezzail bro probably losing the knife. I'm thinking black robes fading to green, corroded metal shoulder pads, not got any further.

As mentioned, pulled out various bits that caught my eye, and am now also considering re-visiting some old traitor guard and my old Crusaders Penitent marines (old school - metals and RTB01, with old school rhino variants) for repainting...

Bit more progress on the blight drone...

And with it's sibling..

Still no real idea what to do with the wings...

Thanks for stopping by....

Love the canopies on the drones, really gross. I managed to pick up a cheap ultrasonic cleaner out of LIDL; dettol is good also, in these times of hand sanitiser scarcity.

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/04/04 00:33:49

Post by: monkeytroll

Arakasi - Not at all attached to be honest, but would still have rather had a fresh mini to start with

youwashock - Busy playing with replacement legs for the egg-walker today

graven - Gross is good Those middle aisles have some good stuff sometimes My shopping trip was planned for local, didn't fancy having to go queue at the supermarket just to add dettol to my list - plus it's not my favourite substance to work with in my cramped boat.

So, cleaned up the two minis, removed the knife from jezzail bro, thinking what to do with that hand now - slight repose of scythe bro's hand, thinking on what to do with the face area.

Also, broke into the stash of Conquest magazines that had been building up without me opening them So lots of sprues to play with - keeping the paints sealed for now - I suspect I might really appreciate a paint drop in a few weeks or so....

These two guys now looking for bases..

Still need some tidying, but close enough to get them based up and ready.

And think I'm calling it done on the predator...

Obviously need to attach the sponson guns, and then there's a couple of spots that need another wash and possibly some weathering powders. Possibly a few bits of wear that could be highlighted still, but I'm happy enough - they can be touched up later if I feel like it.

Viterbi - Thanks, I think it only took a year and a bit - that's record time around these parts

Llama - No, that never ends well. As soon as I turn my back they just cover everything in illiterate graffiti about the size of various warboss' prosthetics.... I think it's more down to the fact that eventually things come to an end, after all, the termie is the only one that I've started this year

So, obviously the close ups show me so much that needs work, but calling it complete.

Incessant Affliction, predator belonging to The Scourge. The original chassis was purchased from a Dark Mechanicus forgeworld around three millennia ago and further modified by the warband's tek-wraiths. Corruption has set in, but the machine-spirit is not read for full possession just yet, and still requires a driver and gunner.

Speaking of tek-wraiths, got some better pics of them...

Mainly so I could create a gallery with finished pics of The Scourge...I'll also start a thread in the showcase forum for them, with hopefully some added fluff (still working some of it out)

Hopefully the first seven traitor guard should be finished tomorrow.

And whilst taking new pics, realised that the graven-walkers weren't actually finished, so gave them a bit of a touch-up.

Not the best work on the cloth etc, but hopefully you're distracted by the shin pus and blood..

Thanks for stopping by, wash your hands on the way out....

graven - They heed the call of his choir they hear the toll of his bell, they smell the perfume from his garden.

Fifty - Ragged cloths and skulls...surely they are Papa's blessed

Viterbi - Many thanks!

Syro - I actually picked up Sedition Wars thinking I'd mesh parts up for my Slaaneshi guys, but after graven sent me a bag'o'bitz Papa laid his claim...

tinfoil - Almighty alliteration appreciated! Who doesn't like a good gribbly?

So, finished off the first squad of traitor guard.

Squad Gilead bravely preparing to assault the black mound of Bak'd-Rop.

As always, there's some tidying up that could be done, but I'm happy enough with them for now. Think the next lot of traitor guard will be from a different remnant regiment - hoping I might actually be able to bash some out fairly quickly...but probably won't

Was playing with parts to get another guy for the Septic Watch - the Captain of the Watch, and possible member of The Heptade - the group of seven that run The Scourge.

Not convinced at the moment. Spent a long time trying to fit different legs, but couldn't get anything I liked so went back to the originals. After doing that I actually realised the figure was in a striding position - I hadn't realised that at first and that could explain some of the trouble I was having with the leg replacements...

The pose with the bolter-halberd by his side works slightly better, but I think the halberd is too long for that pose - the halberd was the piece I was most happy with and was going to start on the greenstuff to pull it together, but now I'm also wondering if I shouldn't have brought the whole head lower.

Did a few other bits to bring the crawler and the large servitor closer to a finish point, not really worth photos yet though.

I did dust off most of my old Crusaders Penitent chapter to take some pictures for the Retro models thread (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/786702.page#10751943) and that got me thinking a lot about re-visiting some of my older guys. I have some guard and traitor guard that I really think I'm going to re-purpose for The Scourge, and spent a while thinking on those Crusaders. I keep thinking I should either re-do them with more modern paint jobs, or else scavenge their vehicles for the needy Chaos deities (the vehicles are all based on the RT era rhino and landraider...)

Much to ponder...

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/04/07 03:41:42

Post by: Arakasi

The bolter-halberd balance looks right, but does seem a bit large for the wielder. I'm sure you could make it work, but if you do shorten it, I'd shorten it both ends.

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/04/07 14:41:05

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

The one thing missing on the halbolter is a trigger mechanism, but it's also Chaos so that can be fairly easily explained away. I love spear-bolters though, and this Chaos take on one is fantastic!

Halberd guy does look cool, but I think you would be right to trim it up a bit. The tattered cape looks great already.

Post by: monkeytroll

Arakasi - Thanks for the confidence! Parking it for a day or two whilst I contemplate, maybe look for another suitable Captain and do something else with that body...but probably won't Probably just fiddle with the halberd and he stance a bit and incorporate he base into the stance...

Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll - Chaos did it is lazy modelling - not that I'm averse to that by any means There won't be an actual trigger, but there will be a piece that evokes the idea there is an actual mechanism in place - or that's the plan

Theo - You know I love to hear that, flattery will get you places in your case

youwashock - Still toying with it...when I compare it to the rest of the Septic Watch it isn't actually much different in length, but the extra bulk of the bolter skews it a bit. May end up losing a tiny section either side, but it will also depend on final pose.

The blight crawlers are edging towards done...

A few details need finishing/tidying, some washes needed in certain areas, touch up on the metals, and decide if I want to do more to the legs...
Then decide if they get based (if they do then that's a way still to go ), and find a name for them.

And Squad Gilead has some support incoming...

They were sitting around in slight states of disrepair and wearing urban camo, for an army hat never materialised (doesn't sound like me does it?). As I've been looking at various older models for potential e-purposing it seemed a good idea to start with these guys. Probably should have done some riveting first though, the extra armour on one is bugging me now.

For my own reference - because I constantly forget to do this - Loren Forest, Skarsnik drybrush, reikland wash, dabed of larger areas. Will get a Skarsnik drybrush tomorrow.

Noting it as there are several vehicles that started to get urban camo for the planed guard army - I think here's at least one chimmy, a Leman Russ or two and a Salamander command vehicle, so I suspect they'll be coming across to The courge in one form or other...

Do know what I'm doing with the two bros for the Dakka painting comp now, just have one more bit to add then likely to start painting tomorrow.

So much paint going on, it hardly seems like my thread at all does it Don't worry I'll try and make sure there's some unpainted gribblies in the next update.

Great stuff - very inspirational! Perhaps it is time I finally got my Nurgle on. I did buy one of those greenstuff power cable making set ups recently....

I like the predator set up with the front wheel, and the various creatures are awesome. I think think bits you've got going, with the Starship Troopers and M'edge stuff mixed with GW and plenty of greenstuff is really working - it makes each figure look new, which is about the best thing possible in this day and age, IMO.

Wraiths are also top notch. Good plague spreaders.

I like that terminator - maybe I will copy that someday - the warmachine thralls are quite nice.

Arakasi - Apparently sometimes a break does bring you back different... And thank you!

CB - Excellent news,thanks!

graven - It's official! Yay!

Viterbi - When I first introduced them, they were likened to the ant-lions. And when that was mentioned the memories came back

kestral - Do it....Papa has many blessings for you... I can't recall right now, but I think the rhino body is from Puppet Wars?? Not sure ow I've written that...I'll check that out. Always trying to make something new - even if it looks like something old

So, bit more done on the sentinels...

Thinking they'll get some heavy sponge chipping, so I'll probably do that next, then can get details out the way without sponging over them.

And some gribblies, as promised..

Spent a while trying t find a work-arm that I was happy with, but i the end figured he was actually more likely a combat servitor with those claws, so gave him a small rotary cannon. It's just a tiny bit too chunky as the body is very slim, but I quite like that.

Bit more paint on the big servitor.

Started on a tek-servitor (probably?)

Pretty sure I've found the head for the next beast. It's a little big and sleek at the moment, but pretty sure I can change that.

And a friendly little puppy from the other side of the warp.

Also started in on the two guys for this month's painting challenge...

Just blocking in a few colours to get the feel for them. And faceless guy did have a face...but once they'd had a wash over to bring out the details it looked bad..so I ripped it off. He will get a replacement.

Oh and the blight drones. They're done.

That'll do for now methinks.
Thanks for stopping in.

Theo - Hey, I have to live with them...

graven - Good-oh! I think that's actually from an eldar jetbike..

tinfoil - Thank you! Pretty sure gribblies are the main draw in this thread

Viterbi - Cheers. Not so much of an army shot yet I feel - I think there's two units (1 traitor guard, 1 graven-walkers), 2 beasts, 3 crawlers and a single terminator. Oh, and 3 tek-wraiths. Maybe when there's a few more bits complete...

Kernel - Thanks man!

Not been feeling the painting, but have done a little building...

What could it be?

I was about to make a few more gribblies in the style of this guy...

When I thought of something else. And so...

Some friends for the little gyro-fan drone I made a while back (who still needs finishing!) Hopefully I have some more warrior tails floating around to make up a swarm.

And a magos - built on the body I've had kicking around forever. This one is the keeper of the flesh-vats, overseeing the daemon-engines coming out of the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

Arms are being kept separate for painting - it all gets a bit cramped in there with them all in place.

Oh, and first thingy. Could it be a little gun-skiff?

Thanks for looking in.

CB - Cheers!

Doc - Merci! Hmm, maybe an orange would work for the wings, I've been struggling with what o do with them. Although that works because the cazadores have dark bodies..

Viterbi - Just as Papa wishes...

So, falling behind with the entry for the dakka painting challenge...

Still some colours need blocking in, and I'm not convinced I got the robes to look as I wanted, think it's become too subtle now. I'll have to do some work on he rest and see how they look then.

Started the basic weathering on the sentinels..

Now to go back and finish the main details, tidy up the screens (and add the side windows - managed to miss those), leg joints etc. Highlight the chipping, then stat on stainins etc.

And not content with support from just some straggly legged chicken walkers the perfidious traitors called in some of their heavier armour....

Only the basics done so far - chimera has had most of the chipping highlighted, need to do the other two, then all the detailing, then further weathering...and of course the tracks - which I need to find.

And a bit of colour also managed to find it's way onto the magos..

Early days yet, but the torso carapace will stay rusted, the torso will go a bit darker, the main carapace will get weathered - and possibly a green stripe to signify allegiance - not sure on that bit yet - then cabling and legs will be fairly close to present, but tidied up.

A few other bits and pieces seeing some colour, including the waste-wasps, but nothing worth pictures yet. And probably no surprise but one of the projects I've been gathering pieces for has suddenly changed direction and brought about a bit of excitement...so who knows what the next update might contain? Not as if anyone ever knows with this thread anyway

oh god, the Nurgle creations are intense! Super inspired and thematic work. Love the spindly legs on the blight drones and the momentum in some of the clawed ones, looks like they've been caught in the middle of a death pounce. Getting Chaurus vibes from the wasp guys too!

Also loving the work on the armour - great colours and weathering. The chunky tracks on the chimera are really pleasing too - nothing better than bricks on wheels. Glad I checked in mate - will keep doing so!

How did you want the robes to look? (Although "subtle" was the first word that sprang to mind for me as well, not that there is anything wrong with that).

Had to take a closer look at the gallery to differentiate the metal from the white - I was thinking you had gone for white too - and it was looking good as a colour combination - until i realised it was probably the primer...

Vehicles are looking... vehicle-y. I like the start of the magos.

Keep up the good work!

Heretical Ramblings: Starships and Sharp Tips... @ 2020/04/21 18:18:08

Post by: monkeytroll

graven - Cheers! Maybe...I'll leave the robes and come back to them once the rest is done to get a feel for how they look as a whole.

youwas - They're getting there...but slowly. Thanks!

CB - Thanks, it's always the best bit on painting vehicles.

Theo - It's all about the bits...

tzurk - Thank you! I obviously need to go back to Skyrim, I had to look up the chaurus, and don't recall seeing them...but I have a feeling I never did get far with Skyrim. Sem to recall I meant to do a quick play-through of just the main quest as I was invested in several other games, but as usual that failed miserably and I stated off on multiple quests so stopped for a while....which grew to more than a while Double tracks definitely add a nice chunk to armour. Glad you found us!

Arakasi - Good question Basic look is green edges fading back to black in the central area. My first 'proper' attempt looked too green for me, although I was happy with the work itself. A back wash brought it down to dark, so it got a green wash over the top, which is where it is in the pics. As mentioned above, I'll leave them for now, do the rest and see how the look at that stage - I still have a couple of colours to figure out (mainly the gloves - struggling with them, was going for a dark red, but don't really feel that when I look at them now), so best to see what the overall picture is I think. At that stage if it's still not right then either a bit more work on highlighting as graven suggested, or possibly just a touch of drybrushing on the very edges. Yeah, went for pale meals so far, which in the quick pics don't stand out from the base well. Cheers!

Not been feeling he painting vibe last few days, so not a lot to show there - and it means I'm running out of time on the nurgle bros....

Seem to have been playing with vehicles a bit though.

Dropped the tracks onto the 3 vehicles already shown...

First pass on colours was done on the sprue to avoid too much over-spill from drbrushing - so need to fill in a few areas, then when everything else is done I'll come back with some weathering powders and textures.

And started playing around with some of he technolog bonekorpus bits - I have a stack of these somewhere, about time I started to actually use them.

Took a set of tracks and filled the inside with some thin plasticard.

Really just for filling he gaps rather than any structural use, so used the thinnest I had to hand for ease of cutting and filing.

The tracks are not massively smaller than the chimera tracks, although lower, so thought some kind of scout similar to the salamander was suitable.

Seen here with an existing salamander that is just starting it's journey over to the dark side..

As the tracks are a bit lower, probably best to sit the body a bit higher on them.

That'l leave a gap, so a bit more plasticard to cover that.

And currently looking like..

Basing it on the command version, so hvy bolter and flamer, but reversing the positions on those. Think the bolter might get offset too - that big control console will likely get shifted to the right more, but it still leaves a mid-placed weapon in an awkward position for access from the rear platform - although it could get remote controls.... The offset look also means I can do something different with the passenger armour which will help differentiate it a bit from the 'official' salamader...I envisage the 2 working together in a scout/recon role. And as such am gleefuly searching for various odds and sods to cove the vehicles with - extra kit, spares etc.

For instance, drilling out some track pieces for hanging as spares on the side...

And whilst searching for various items I came across this little beauty..

Untouched original rhino..didn't think I had any left. There was this and another one which has just had the basic hull stuck together - means I can leave the Crusaders Penitent rhinos alone for now if I want to bring some old-skool over to chaos - which I obviously do want

Also felt I needed to cut some stuff up...

Not likely to use the terrain from Conquest as it's supposed to be used, so let's cut up those big chimney things. And hey..that big one fits nicely onto an old dread shoulder piece. That might be useful in some way...

Yep, it makes a good base to build some structure on...

Now we have a big pipe coming out of a box. Excellent.

Best finish that box off though..

Using some thicker plastcard this time, who knows what might get stuck to this, so we'll make it a bit sturdier.

Skip a bit ahead (I mean, I'm surprised I remembered to take all these shots to be honest, so let's not worry about a few missing ones, hey?)

Big pipe on a vehicle...that'll need some extra support for sure. Yep, the bits got stuck on another bonekorpus bit - this time a tank body, but not te one that belonged to the previous tracks, because his one has tracks attached. Probably going to have to fill the inside of those at some point - wish I'd thought of ha before sticking them together (tracks and body have been together for some time now - I think they may even have appeared in this thread many moons ago...)

That central hatch won't work well with a big pipe right next to it.

So we'll build up a little square and attach a new place to attach a hatch to, so that when it's attached it looks like it's attached in a good attachment place. Just flipped a 25mm base and added a skirt of the extra thin plasticard around it. Going to have to add some rivets to that at some point...

But overall, we have the basics of a Destroyer tank hunter now...

Needs a bit more work, but that's the basics done.

I think that this one (and the 2 scout salamanders) will be attached to the second lot of traitor guard that hang with The Scourge -

That's some of them beginning their transformation from unspecified renegade guard to yet-to-be-specified traitor guard. They'll be a bit further along the road to chaos from their masked brethren - on the visible spectrum at least, who knows what's behind hose gasmasks? So some spikes, chains and stuff to come, along wit some bits from the Blackstone Fortress guys.

Also means those tanks will get some more overt chaos signifiers - I'm not averse to using spikes and chains sometimes - chaos comes in many forms, including spiky ones. AT some point there will be some more non-marine guys that are even more obviously chaos tainted - that'll be where the chaos cultists and mutants end up..

Not just tanks getting the love though.

Lots of fun to be had with those armiger dudes - as seen in various prototypes previewed earlier in the thread (and they're still on the table), but the all had 2 legs. We like having more (or less) around these parts, so lets do a bit of chopping and then put two sets of hips together.

For this one we want to stick to a central joint tough, neither of the end options that this currently leaves us with.

Roughly fill the gaps - there will likely be some more work - pipes, tentacles, something - so no need to get it perfect at this stage. Found a bit of pipework that seems to fit nicely, and chopped the waist joint to fit.

Having done that, I noticed that the waist appears to fit o a set of dread legs...

No use for that at this point, but an interesting way to add height to a standard dread maybe....

So glue those bits together..

Should be fine.

Whilst that sets, let's do some more fiddling.

Cut off that thumb claw, merge the fingers a bit, and add a wire. No longer looks like a hand, just a bit like a hand.... Probably need to do some other stuff later, bit of chipping at the plates, maybe add some tendons between parts - thought about removing the spikes, but kept them for now.

Bottom half seems to be going somewhere at least. What about the top.

Oh, a giant fly's head..knew I'd find a use for that. And that leaves me with a giant fly body to play with....

So, if we put those bits together..

Well, that's a good start for something surely...

I'll see if maybe I can get some colour up for the next update...maybe...

tinfoil - Many thanks! Interested myself - I started that one purely because I knew I had to get some Nurgle love going for the armigers, and all I knew was it needed more that 2 legs

graven - Cheers chief! I mean, I love me some tank action, but it can't compete with giant skittering things right

Viterbi - Warp-forged and pox-ridden!

Arakasi - I'll happily take a steam-punk vibe - there's the odd touch here and there in my nurgle boys. Totally get that - if everyone liked everything I did then it probably wouldn't be me doing it Let's face it he main draw on this thread is probably just to see what the feth I'm going to do next - good or bad And I'm planning on getting them done - the whole point of entering this year was to make sure I competed something

CB - Thanks a lot!

Doc - Cheers!

So a bit more on the Nurgle brothers...

Had to go back over the studs - I washed them all with contrast gulliman flesh rather than flesh wash - it spread a bit too far out, although doesn't look that bad in the pics. Also spilled the whole pot of gulliman, luckily I was just in tracksuit and that absorbed all of it.

Need to go back over the reds - after I'd highlighted them I thought it loked a bit stark for cloth - wanted a kind of velvet feel, so I tried a 'wash' with the other contrast paint I own (well, only one now), volupus pink. Toned it down too much, so need to highlight back up again. Also contemplating what to put on the badges,

And have 2 colours I'm still debating - the barrel on the rifle and the edge strip on the glove. I was thinking either black or green for the glove, but not sure as it's next to the black/green robe. No idea on the barrel - I've veered from gey to black to various metals to green.

Then just need to finish all the shading/highlighting, tidy up the details, and decide on bases. Sensible choice only going for 2 figures this month

Whilst I had paints out I made a start on the tank hunter..

Early days still - and I forgot that I was going to have some green panels on there before I started on the first round of weathering. May go back and make a couple of panels on the track units green - or may keep it all black, not sure yet.

Go some armour on the salamander variation...

Including making a gap for the main weapon - which is a bit backwards as I haven't decided which piece I'm using yet.... The gaps in the reinforcement strips have since been filled.

And started to figure out what next for the big scuttler

Two main options presented themselves for the carapace. First one was previewed back when I first started looking a the armigers, using tyranid carapaces.

Spoiler:

So started thinning down the front edge so that it would be a closer fit to the torso.

I like this one a lot, and the 'nid carapaces tie in with the blight drones that use them, but with the legs I feel might be a bit too much 'nid...

Other option that first occurred was a bit more...fleshy

Whole carapace got a layer of Bugmans glow, a few splodges of red, then a coat of good old Tim Holtz crackle paint over the majority - leaving a few bits like vents free.

This then got an application of yellow ink - I'm using W&N calligraphy ink here as that gives the best result on this scheme I've found - but it's not water-resistant, so needs to be sealed before letting an other paints come near for fear of bleeding colours. Got some large cracks in this time that haven't filled with the ink so well - not surprising as I went for a nice thick layer. May try a thinned white int there before another ink wash, but not convinced - that may just spread white under the layer too. Might try a very careful painting of white in just the largest, may just do another ink wash.

Pretty sure this is the version I'm going to use with the fly head - original plan was to add three thin strips of armour going back from the front to around the mid-point, and have the suppurating flesh showing between them, but I think I'm just going to go with the bare flesh now.

Thanks for stopping in...

Plenty more to go, even if I don't go back for the green panels

And as an added bonus, that little skiff thing I showed a couple of updates ago...

Of course it wasn't a skiff, it's a third blight drone. Slightly different configuration to the other two - originally I was aiming to make it closer, but just wasn't feeling it, so went this way. It did end up a bit bigger than planned - I kept adding length to the body when I should have been starting the tentacles. Oh well.

I love the third blight drone You do know, that you have to hold it flying over the battlefield all the time and making buzzing noises when playing, right?

Cool idea using the Mechanicus terrain as a cannon! It looks suitably over complicated and inexplicable to mesh well with the grimdark future of warfare. The weathering looks good, too.

And I agree, those wings and the flying bug are top notch.

Cam - Hey buddy, thanks for popping in. Good to be back, and feeling good about my hobbying again.

Kernel - Thanks, but I think the personality lies more with the sculpts than my colouring Think of all the fun you van have with an armoured company....

Viterbi - Cheers, it didn't come out as planned, but hey-ho Have to put him down sometimes so I can woosh the big one overhead...

graven - Can take zero credit for the wing effect, that was just the plastic. And I've never seen it do that before, must have caught the light just right as I was shooting...

Vermis - He does indeed - to tie in with the blight crawlers he oversees Sadly I'm running low on them now - not sure I have enough for another trio of skittering things, so have to ration them out now. Thanks a lot!

Riddle - After all, what is a laser but a very bright exhaust... Again, can't take credit for the wings, and they'll never look like that again now anyway - they got covered to fit in with the other 2 drones. I have a few sets of those wings, so there'll probably be a transparent set somewhere along the line - just need to shade it carefully.

Didn't quite finish the nurgle brothers, but getting closer - confident they'll be done in time.

Not the best pics as they were taken in bright sunlight. There's been a little more progress since.

Still to do : highlight the glove band - went for black in the end. Highlight all the studs. Possibly re-touch silver edge highlights on bits of the armour - it doesn't all show well. Brass bands on the rifle. Haft of the scythe.Clean up some overspills. Inner hood of scythe bro. Highlights on rifle stock. Potentially some powders.

And finish the bases.

These have also now got some colour on - plan was't to decide on bases til tomorrow anyway, so technically I could say I'm ahead of schedule

Drone started to see some colour too..

Not so happy with the build on this one, but he'll do. I'll try and finish painting the trio before starting in on another flight, but that might be tricky, plenty of ideas buzzing around at the moment...

Salamanders both ready for paint.

Actually - still needs a trigger for the autocannon - technically not a legal loadout with the flamer, but I couldn't find a heavy bolter that worked - and that bothers me no longer anyway.

Whip aerial is a bit dodgy - couldn't find any suitable wire, so went with some thin plastic rod - not sure how well that will hold up over time..
Hooks on the side will be supporting spare track links. There will be a bit of stowage, and several things hanging of the frame-work.

Again - needs a trigger. And also needs the hinges finished on the little folding table - keep forgetting those.

As with the other, there will be more stowage and equipment on the sides and the framework - all added post-painting.

And started work on the weaponry for Fly-Head Armiger

Let's start with a bit of bio-tech for the barrel.

And we'll need to make those ammo containers look a bit more like liquid containers - a couple of .80 plastic strips (had to double to get it proud of the surface) should form a band to hold the container in place. A quick search through some EMA bits finds an end cap that fits with a bit of cutting, and a thinner strip to hide the join.

Then we can chop away at this Nurgle guy's backpack - get rid of those odd bits of armour to get a smoother join, and get rid of the gubbins on the side to get a thinner profile.

Then we can attach that to the back of the gun. Add a bit of wire to sculpt the rest of the feeder pipe onto later - not going to be able to sculpt that as I go.

And there we have a suitably nurglitch weapon. It's a little large, but not overly so.

That is...until we remember we're using 4 legs on this guy - the rear legs do get tangled with the pipe and heads hanging from the rear storage container

Option 1 - remove the rear container and feed a pipe from the under storage tank to the rear of the gun.

Option 2 - leave it as is and use on another guy. Stat a new gun for Fly-Head, and this time take note of where it's actually going...

I'll probably go with option 2

Thanks for stopping in...

Great work on all the things.
Tank hunter has really come together with some paint.

Does the tank have to be attached to the gun? Could it be positioned elsewhere and longer hoses run to the gun?

graven - Cheers. And I think you're right. Came back to it in reminding and it just didn't feel quite right, so off it came!

Gwyn - Thanks appreciate it, but see above - plenty more options for that tank though, it'll re-appear.

Doc - Thanks bud! Still haven't decided whether to go back and add the green panels - I'll probably wait until the salamander scouts have some colour on and see how it fits with them. Good question - after pulling it apart I toyed with the idea of having it on the back of the torso, but wasn't feeling it for this guy. It's a possibility for his gestating bipedal brother though.

youwas - Not to worry, these things happen a fair bit when you just dive in and start cutting and sticking bits. Not the first time and certainly won't be the last I've made mistakes like that

Nurgle bros pretty much complete now, pics are from earlier...

Actual bits left at present are the small matter of scythe bro's head... ...still need designs for the badges, maybe add some bronze or brass to the broken star, a faint glaze on the big rock, and a touch of dead grass. Easily accomplished tomorrow. He says confidently...

The little bloat drone for a bit more work

Get him to the same stage as his big brothers and then I can finish them all together and figure out how to base them.

Whilst in the frame of mind of repurposing tanks and that - pulled out two more chimeras belonging to those foolish lackeys of the corpse-throne - I also started changing allegiance of a few random marines I had floating around...

And whilst the colouring set was in play also pulled out this guy...

Remember me?

Yeah, he's getting some love again - although as I was working on bits I found I probably need to look at rd-doing the turquoise, it's fairly shoddy in places.

Obviously some time was spent playing with bits, a few bits stuck together, but not much to show just yet.

Apart from maybe this guy...

Some sort of Nurgle land-strider...

Concept is a mount for a 'Herald' type character - likely a corrupted or even demonic one in this case. I have a few similar character ideas floating around - a marine type in a waking platform, possibly using the big primaries type dread from Conquest (I have to find something to do with that monstrosity), a more human type - part of the Filth Columnists - riding a Leman Russ popemobile, you know, the usual stuff.

tinfoil - Cheers! It is a fun sculpt.

Nurgle bros complete. Some minor work done since these pics - proper photos tomorrow.

Chopped up a few bits of tubing...

Grabbed some wheel type bits

And now we can make a little platform for some weapons...

And some star mines...

" target="_new" rel="nofollow">

Wheels were a bit chunky, so filed them down a tad...

Glued the wheels together - this is why they needed filing down a bit - and added a strip of plasticard

Thicker tubes glued to little tubes, then attached to the wheels...

Then all put together

And a little wheelie car...where's Chorlton?

And the other classic walker...

Just playing, but there's some potential there...

And legs in place...

Exhausts and feet just placeholders for now.

And the other body...

And a wee skittering beastie...

And a really wee skittering thing...

This will be a companion for Fly-Head, will be getting a similar broken flesh effect.

Thanks for checking in

Arakasi - Cheers! As always I look at the finished pics and spot a load that could have been better - but I'm loving the fact that I am compelled to finish models Fast to get the basic build down - now it all slows down as I try to get the details right and get sidetracked by the 40,000 other ideas tugging a my mind

graven - I partially build like lightning See, now you've started another sidetrack running in my head - reckon a goblin head would make a good basis for the little old lady - maybe even go for a gritty re-boot version

Viterbi - Thanks a lot! That would actually make a good basis for some sort of aquatic nurglesque thingummy...

Theo - But surely it's obvious those bits should go together? And you know that's exactly what I like to hear - flattery will get you everywhere Well, that one is going to be a test for the suppurating skin with crackle medium on a tiny scale - I have some plans for it on shoulder pads etc if it works okay in tiny patches. But that's not to say that will be the only version - I'm thinking these are little mechanic servitors, possibly adding them on bases for certain bigger models.

And the two champs finished, with pictures as promised..

J'aq and D'aq Grimspite - mercenaries who joined up with The Scourge a couple of centuries ago.

J'aq the Pruner:

D'aq the Hunter

Rims could do with being a bit neater, lenses weren't the best, J'aq's boots could have down with another was to pull them out of the base, straps could have done wit another highlight - and one bit of strapping was missed. But I'm fairly happy with them, and as mentioned above, his is helping keep me motivated on actually getting stuff finished, which was my main motivation for joining the challenge this year, so in that regard, very happy

In the three months I've been back I'm fairly sure I've actually finished more than I had in the previous several years - long term followers will be well aware of that

Still need to drag out my lightbox and start to get better pictures too.

Next round's theme is retro - so plenty for me to play with there, time to start thinking on what to do...

youwas - He's a little sweety really. Thanks!

graven - Cheers! I see Arakasi has already let you know, and saw you posted on the thread

Arakasi - Likewise. The cyborks are silently judging me, but I'm sticking with chaos for now. And likewise

Doc - Thanks, the challenge helps keep me motivated to finish, which was my main reason to take part this year.

So, next round of the dakka paint challenge is up - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787921.page#10785811 Old School Cool. I'm currently thinking one of two of the old walkers will be my entry. See if that spurs me to finish building them

And also, next round of the LOER terrain comp is up - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787913.page#10785587. Honour Our First Responders - a medical theme. Obviously been a while since I entered, so jumping in on this one - likely some sort of dark mechanicus shenanigans, a bio-forge, flesh-vat, maybe a plague surgeon in the trauma gardens...

Starting putting colours down on the next lot of vehicles...

Going with the green on random plates, this is also used by these guys (need to start coming up with names for the human troops now) as their vehicle identification - Squad Detritus know their chimera has the green back p!ate and front left panel. They'll still get some markings, but don't need a slew of designations.

And realised I only added rivets to the hatch turret How slack!

Currently not sure on the 'interiors' of the salamanders.

Options I'm currently considering are grey (fairly standard), green (again, fairly standard - plus ties in with the green plates, although it would likely be a paler green inside), and bare metal.
Unlikely option is to keep interior black as well, but not really feeling that one.
And there's potential for a bit of mix and match - part bare metal, part colour.
Obviously there will be plenty of weathering on whichever scheme.

And progress on little skittery servitor

Need to add a little circular saw proboscis and detail the legs. Fairly pleased with how the crackle worked on a small scale (not the best pic to showoff) - another pad next to him which I think is going to become a little flying servitor...

monkeytroll,

Looking forward to your entry in the LoER contest.

For the interiors of the Salamanders, you could start with the green and see how it looks...then if to bright just darken it with brown washes to simulate dirt and grime coming off boots and some rust patches here and there and in the corners.

Cheers,

CB

Looks like you've been busy MT! I really like the big skittery evil guy - looks super menacing. And the little skittery evil guy too - reminds me of something out of a dwemer ruin - back to Skyrim again!

The crackle effect is great; almost an optical illusion - is it flesh, is it rust, what is this ungodly mess I'm looking at?

Chimeras (chimerae?)/sallies looking great. I vote green for the interior too, suitably GI-like an as CB says easy to dirty up if you need.

All these contests sound really interesting too - I will have to check out a few of those threads!

CB - I have some idea of what I'm dong, just need to find the right materials now I'm leaning towards the green myself.

tzurk - Fits and starts Always wanted to play more with Dwemer tech I do love the crackle stuff, great for a variety of things.

So, re-worked the gun for fly-head, and this is where he's currently sitting

Except he's had a bit of further work done on the legs...

And whilst working on his fellow armiger, came up with this as a rough concept for something else...

What else....

Started on a card set for the mirror universe..

Maybe not, colours don't match.

Cut out by hand to be tidied a bit at the next stage - sure I could have got fancy with working out centre points for the three discs and then using my circle cutter, but I went the quick and rough way

In come the bases..

Once those were attached it was easy to trim any excess and then file smooth. 40mm and 32mm bases.

Then we find another handy bit of pipe fitting (I must try and remember where I got this stuff from, it has plenty of uses and a variety of bits)

This one we'll stick to a 25mm base. All this sticking bases to stuff, it's like we're back in the 80's.

This one gets a hole drilled in it.

Let's remove those Sigmarite bits and just leave the skulls - always leave the skulls.

Then we can stack the single disc under a trefoil and put the skulls on top of that, and put it all on top of those ridiculous legs for the primaris dread

The 40mm look just a tiny bit too big, whereas the 32mm look a little too small. It's 40k, so probably go with the bigger version Need to assemble some other gubbins - maybe a weapon mount, some more railings, a ladder, stuff like that - then make the final decision on size.

There'll be a marine on there, proclaiming the coming of the pox-god to the unworthy masses. One of a trio (maybe?) of 'heralds'.

Speaking of..

Looking at better head options for the herald mount...

I liked the ratty head in gas-mask, but I think this herald is going to be more of a plague-bringer type, and so maybe a more 'natural' feel. I like the idea of the second one, using hose 'nid glands as compound eyes, bu think that would work better elsewhere, so probably going with the first - add some eyes and do a little defining on the 'snout/mouth/beak'

Also got the interior together for the bio-sentinel

So that got put together. Need to add a hip-shield piece each side, glue the feet, add some more cables maybe, and the weapon.

oh, and this thing...

Which was going to be some kind of drone - although switching out the turbines for some kind of rocket/ramjet/warp-drive would perhaps make a good start for a BFG cruiser. And when I stood it up for that last pic I thought with a tweak to the angle of the turbines and some kind of torso in place of the drone head that would make an interesting character. Best one I have so far is from the nurgle blood bowl team, but it's nor quite big enough to really work as is. More playing needed there..

Thanks for stopping in, as always.

Theo - It has to start neat before it gets corrupted And thanks!

Kernel - Cheers! Oh, there are at least 4 or 5 things that the ratty gasmask has been briefly attached to. The landslides Herald is definitely going to be plague-bearer based, so it fits better having the mount all 'organic' - I know that doesn't necessarily hold with the things I build, but it's how I'm dealing with the various heralds And steal away please...

graven - Glad you approve I'm just here as a humble conduit of the ruinous powers, if you are filled with the building urge that cannot be laid at my door..

Theo - Well, I have a feeling the next time they appear they may not be a sentinel and a warp-jet thing (although to be fair, warp-jet thing is probably accurate for 50% of my stuff )

Spent a few days reading, watching, playing, so progress on things has been slow.

The old-school school sentinels have barely moved

Still needs weapon and pilot - possibly thinking multi-laser coming out the nose. May also extend the greenstuff on the lower leg parts, to make it look more like it contains a piston, and possibly add some cables.

Again, pilot and weapon needed - there are 2 of this body, one will get a pilot based on the original, other will get one based on the forge world renegades. I'm toying with the idea of an auto-cannon protuding from what is currently a head-light. Also need to bulk up the ankle joint.

This one has a lot of filing done, not sure how apparent that will be. This one gets the iron-strider legs as seen in previous update. Those legs feel quite curvy in relation to the very squared off body, so been rounding off a lot of corners on this one - also why this gets a slightly curvier power pack, and the previous body gets a blockish motor.
Still playing with the feet on this too, haven't got those right yet, first attempt utilised the extra foot pads from the onager dunecrawler, might still be based on them, we'll see.

The three of these will be fun by the filth columnists, the rag-tag humans/muties/cultists that are first down in extended campaigns, spreading early poisons and poxes and recruiting traitors. They don't have the best equipment, hence why they use these old model walkers that have been salvaged and 're-built many times over the centuries, explaining the non-standard builds.

Now, one (or more at the outside) of these was going to be my entry into this month's dakka painting challenge (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787921.page#10785811), but as they are still all being built I felt it wise to switch in a substitute at this point.

Initially thought about this guy

Lovely old chaos sorceror that would work well for Nurgle based fun, but rethought I might want to play with him a bit more before putting him to work.

So this guy stepped up to the plate.

Had to rebuild his finger and a bit of his glove, and swapped out his old plain dagger for something with a bit more pox-panache.

Don't want to go the same way as the J'aq and D'aq, so going pale with the robes - three or four layers to go, bringing the highlights up to screaming skull. The bone style armour will be red - as seen, thinking of will get a black wash now, then highlight back up to reddish-orange for high contrast. Contemplating a leopard style pattern on the fur - but possibly in tiger colours. Not sure how well I can pull that off, and not sure on the colour combo either.

Did some tests for possible blades, not convinced by any of them - or indeed that the photo shows them well

Inverse highlighting from light green to black. (Maybe, but a bit bland)
Rust to verdigris type pattern in alternating 'pockets'. (Loved the idea, think it could only be pulled off on a bigger area - by me anyway)
Next three were all variations using crackle paint mixed with colours.
Crackle mixed with flesh and black wash, over green
Crackle mixed with silver over rust.
Crackle mixed with silver over leadbelcher.

Mixing the crackle seems to have degraded the effect. That shot was taken maybe 5 hours after application - no sign of cracking. There seems to be a bit of roughness appeared now - a few hours later, but it didn't crack. I wasn't convinced the wash mix would, but I did think the silver mix would, think the ratio was about 10:1 in favour of crackle. I applied that one on a few other models too, some with bigger surface areas, and no different results.

Clear crackle applied to fly-head's legs, about an hour after application.

So scratch that idea for now.

Also toying with having one of the old familiars with the sorceror.

These are the ones that would work best I feel. Two robes ones are fairly obvious, although they would need to be tattered up. The book could be on a plinth or rock in front, so actually being read. Furry guy would work if I did him in the same pattern as I end housing on the sorceror's furs...

And as a bonus, just been messing around with a bit of corrupting...

Initially just for fun, but now I'm thinking that it might fit well with the upright drone/turbined body from the previous post, to form the basis of some sort of daemon prince.

The green circular leg joints on the sentinels - green plastic or green stuff press mould or other - and from where?

I think the blade test picture is the problem. Number two looks promising - but also looks like a glistening oyster shell effect.

The crackle experiments are interesting - even though yours appeared on the less successful side (but knowledge gained is always a win) - I wonder if a different crackle or paint or wash brands would give different results...

I have my own supply of Chaos Sorcerers and familiars - but none of those! I'd race you to paint them all up - but that might just be lose/lose

Is that an Avatar of Khaine you are corrupting?

Great texture-work, there. How did you get those very thin strands of muscle/mucus/webbing connecting the blades to the limbs? I really like that effect.

Also digging the gribbly Avatar.

youwas - They are great little things. Currently it's the book, but more might get added

graven - Thanks a lot! As yet I've considered no colours for those arms -the were just testers for the sword and currently I don't know who's going to end up with them. But skinless plaguebearers sound like fun...

Theo - Cheers!

Arakasi - The joints are road wheels from some old 1:72 scale tank kit - no idea which one now.
The picture certainly didn't help Oyster shell would work okay, but that's not what it really looks like...
Spoiler:
Was meant to be some sort of cross between the contrasting warm/cold corrosion effects that are popular and one of the classic power weapon effects - ended up as a mess.
Yeah, knowing the clear crackle doesn't take colour well is at least useful knowledge - I have a feeling that I did do some mixing with some of the coloured ones from the same range - possibly somewhere in the cyborks thread, might take a dig t see if I did.
I think I had all the familiars - although some have been used elsewhere, still have a few left in he bag though, along wit a couple of other sorcerors and witches - and agree, a race would probably get us nowhere
It is indeed - it's been hanging around waiting to get corrupted by Slaanesh, but it's been so long decay set i and Nurgle claimed it..

Don - The strands were initially formed with bostik glue - I use either that or UHU, but I'm out of UHU - the the get a coat of some heavy gloss medium to help strengthen them - depending on what/where/how/why/when the may then get another touch of glue and medium - this can help shape ligaments within the bit. The other method I have used, but not here, is to use a length of thin plastic rod as the base. These two methods mean you get to start wit somehig that looks tightly stretched - i can be hard work trying to get that look initially with greenstuff or similar.

Doc - cheers, always messing about..err I mean experimenting...

CB - That's the current plan. Quick mock up, very roughly placed obviously:

So, the walking book will be going in front of the sorceror

May also get one behind him as well - just playing around with basing - maybe have the two familiars (or one of them) on separate base, but that connects to the main base - so a piece of flooring, or an i-beam, or something that is present on both bases and fits together. We'll see....

2 more layers to go on the green, 2 or 3 for the red. Still contemplating sword and furs. Eyes will probably not be blue, just put some colour there to fill space - thinking they might be silver or gold.

Demon prince chopper feet is a great start, I like the tentacle hands. They might not be aerodynamic, but when your a prince of darkness the rules of flight don’t apply to you.

I love the book familiar, and having him up in the air just oozes chaos goodness, because who else would have only feet, but not walk the earth?

Yes, you can really see the tension on the tendons. I might give it a try - I'm hoping at some point to pick up a Carnosaur and it would be fun to get some strands of saliva in his mouth.

The walking book is wonderful. Happy to see it get joined with the sorcerer. The red also looks grand - it's a very organic looking red which sits very well next to the green robes.

Theo - He doesn't even need the fans anymore to fl - he just kept them because he likes the panicked squeaking when he starts to slowly lower himself into a mound of nurglings.
Unfortunately the book won't be floating, there will be a little outcrop for it to stand on.

graven - Did someone say something about red???

CB - I get it, there were a couple of reasons I went this way. First was I still like the idea of either a drone or a spaceship using that set-up, and want to keep any potential cross-over limited. But the main one was I just had that flash when I was playing with the bits, and knew that was how I wanted it. Always good to hear different views

Don - If you want free-hanging saliva along with strands that join tooth-to-tooth, then a short length of fishing line with a drop of glue at the end (to form the drip) works well - epoxy type glues sometimes work by them selves to form a drip, but they'll sometimes curl if not under tension.

Viterbi - The familiar set had some great figures in, fun to paint.

Slow progress this week, and none on the sorceror. Bit of a spurt last couple of days, but nothing major.

Little skitter-bug done.

Plan is still for him to be on the base with fly-head, so will look again when that's ready - might end up adding a touch of verdigris, but felt like I wanted this one a bit cleaner. Still, might be too clean at present.

Herald mount is pretty much there.

Went back and forth a lot on adding a saddle - I might do another version at some point, I love the idea, but it didn't fit with the idea I had of this Herald. Also ummed and ahhed about eyelids - I also had an earlier version with a kind of compound eye - didn't work as well as I hoped. I now think I'll add an upper lid (won't quite be upper..) only, so it has the eyeball pretty much open, but has some kind of nictating membrane.
Also drilled out holes to take a couple of chains that will display bells/heads.

Bit of work on a little base.

Penny added as counterweight, and a small trench cut out. Pipe cut to fit i trench, and a hole created at one point.(it's neater if you cut the trench before gluing the coin - but I went he other way round as I changed my mind about the base after I glued it )

Trench filed with sandy paste and pipe test fitted.

Roughly tear 4 bits of corkboard to form extra height around the trench.

Stuck to the base, and sides very roughly cleaned up.

Roughly cover in sandy paste, leaving it patchier in the trench for texture.

And glue some tiny pieces of cork close to the trench - bits of earth pulled out of the trench.

While that all cures some lengths of jewellery wire are threaded through the hole in the pipe - this is 0.8mm and 0.4mm

The wires and pipe get a bit of colour added.

The base gets a black wash.

This is followed by drybrushes of karak stone and ogryn camo, with some splodges of skrag brown around the trench.

Then a wash of sepia and a light drybrush of screaming skull. Some areas get a wash of fleshtone, mainly around the trench.

Then the pipe is glued in the trench and the servitor is glued to the wires. Might have missed a photo there....

Still needs a wash over the wires to dirty them down and tie them in, cover any bare patched not covered by gluing the bits together. A bit of verdigris needed, may re-do the face a bit more pallid, and want to add a couple of hanging 'banners' from the side aerial.
The servitor was one of the builds I made from random supply drop bags, was meant o be imperial but never got round to finishing it, so made a few changes and started re-painting. There's a warp-smith undergoing painting too, they'll be together.

And continuing fun with old minis....

The ancient tech-priest from the adventures set gets a new axe and a mechadendrite - nice and easy. This will be an enginseer that is assigned to the old-school chicken walkers.

And then there's this guy....

Still undergoing sculpting.

This is going to be a kind of sensor servitor - It tracks the state of decay of the atmosphere, ground, water, poison levels etc. It floats and will be tethered to some variants of the skitter-bugs - feeding extra info back to the tri-mind servitor processing it all.

And a quick supply drop -

Dump Dog Trooper:

The hound:

Scale shot:

Comes from Your Dream Miniature, what appears to be a new Russian start-up (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787690.page#10779949)

Loved the look, so took a punt (bit of a gamble at present I know, but hey-ho) and really pleased. Those pictures show the parts straight out of the bag - each trooper was individually bagged, nice quality, crisp details, looks nice. I'll have a play this weekend with test fitting various pats to see how they scale kit-bash wise, but I think they'll be fine.

What an update! A lot of really cool stuff. Not sure where to begin but my favorite is the floating servitor, it really looks like he's pulled up the wires rather than being supported by them.

I really like the tri-sensor servitor. In The Lord of the Night, weren't there three characters who each had a third of a brain? And the villain used them to combine their brainpower and they were super smart when they were all together, but he split that intelligence into three to control them? Anyway that floating bag of brains is a great design.

graven - Cheers bud! I think that's it's defining feature

DQH - Thanks a lot.
He's been sitting around for ages, and I always thought I'd have him welding or fixing a door or wall panel, but that was when he belonged to the imperials
Not read it I'm afraid, but I think Skitarii mentioned a mechanicus magos who had three brains in the same tank. Possibly the one interesting thing in the book

CB - I made a deal with the ruinous powers, so I get all the ideas, but never get to finish them..... And cheers!

Kernel - Think I'm at the slowest I've been since re-appearing - don't let multiple shots of a base in progress fool you....

Viterbi - Thanks so much! Glad it turned out alright.

Doc - Many thanks. Always fun trying to figure out floating models.

Slow progress on many things - a couple have reached stages worth showing.

The marine herald

Used some strip of plasticard to add a bit of relief detail under the platform, nothing much as it will hardly be visible, but enough to beak up the flatness. You can see the messy gluing here to.

A couple of tiny strips added, which then got holes drilled through. These will take hanging chains and ropes - location was important to make sure things hang right, but alignment isn't - why they're all at odd angles.

Made a little container for lovely poisonous bio-matter and an aerial post (hole drilled through the aerial to allow an extension holding a banner).

Added a couple of side barriers using layered plasticard - went with the angle of the bases instead of vertical for a bit of interest.

And glued the pulpit in place.

Roughly placed - there'll be some cabling t the back, maybe some more bits on the interior walls.

Thought for a bit about removing the banner from the herald and having a torii type of affair holding a bell in place of he bits. Although that makes the 'banner' bigger which would seem right, it doesn't quite give me the sense that he is the herald. I'll work on detailing the current bits whilst I ruminate on that - I might change my mind.

And the herald himself turned out to be a very simple bits swap - albeit he doesn't have a right arm yet. Body from one, banner from another, backpack from a third - just some minor trimming so far.

In place of a face he'll get three cables feeding into the back of the three skulls on the pulpit.

And there will be the odd skull, spike, head and whatnot hanging on rusty chains for good measure.

Imperial Probe Droid Sniffer Drone

Body finished and primed.

And current batch of contenders for Robot Wars, err...the floaty drone's baby probe-bots.

Filth Columnist Chimera

Had this Mega-City Pat-Wagon from the old Judge Dredd kickstarter and managed to get some paint on it before I lost interest in building a scale model of the Big Meg in my room (which is what it was turning into in my mind )

For a long time there were plans to cut the eagles head off and mould on two heads - making it an ideal arbites transport. But realistically that project is one several blocks past the wall behind the back-burner. I have another project lying around (quel surprise!) involving a civvy truck that is used as a chimera by a Slaaneshi cult, so it seemed reasonable to do likewise but for Papa Nurgle. It's not a great cast - it was taken from an old (now) 3d printed master and suffers with print lines very badly. Hopefully I can use that to help create a badly worn and rusted vehicle. It'll be used by the Filfth Columnists who have infiltrated the planer ahead of The Scourge in order to spread unrest, create cults and do a bit of poisoning along the way.

First, to de-Meg it.

Remove the side bull-bars, remove the gun emplacements, remove the eagle's head. Add some vents to cover the gun mounts, stick a hook on the back, add a bird skull, and create a little pop-up turret (not working in this instance). Alsod rilled a hole in the bonnet for an attachment point for a couple of chains that will be wrapped around the 'steel crow' (work i progress name for this particular cult...). The eagle also got a few hacks and holes around the feathers.

Added top doors and a mega-phone speaker - as a cult vehicle it can spread the word via sweet sweet harmonies as it travels. Managed to ad the door handles at a wonk, I've left it for now, secretly hoping it adds to the decrepit look when finished (I know, I know, just lazy....).

Created the weapons for the turret - two old las-rifle barrels to give the impression of a multi-laser, will also get a flamer nozzle in there - didn't want to fit one externally, so all weapons in the turret.

The idea is to have it heavily rusted, so going to try out a couple of techniques to get there. Using chipping fluid to get a version of the hairspray technique, and using powder textures to create some natural chipping. For those that don't know it, the hairspray technique involves first painting our model in the colour you want to show through the chips (so bare metal, primer etc) then spraying several layers of hairspray on it, before spraying it your final color. The hairspray allows you to then chip and weather the top layer with wet stiff brushes, cocktail sticks or whatever, allowing the underlayer to show through. There are a few mediums on the market that do a similar job to hairspray, which can be a bit temperamental sometimes. I seem to recall using this on an ork building back in the day, but this will give it a real test to see how it performs. Need to check might even have two different mediums.
Using pigments to add texture and create chips involves painting on a mix of paint/wash and pigments which ends up with a rough texture. the final cloour is painted over that, and then using cocktail sticks and brushes you can chip away the paint exposing the pigment powder. I was thinking this could work well with the print-lines as the added texture will help disguise them.

I'm not expecting world-class results without completely stripping the model and doing some hideous amount of filling and sanding

Undercoat of scrag brown to start with.

Then I start with a sponge - first doombull brown, then tau light ochre. making sure to get coverage across the surface, not just the high points and wear points like you normally would with sponging. make sure attention is paid to some of the hard to get area, push that sponge in.

At this point I actually decided I didn't like the initial start, really wanted a darker start point.

So created a 'wash' using fleshtone, black wash and some rust pigment - don't need a lot for colour, it's very strong - pigment This got a fairly liberal application, and whilst still damp I transferred more pigment to various areas - just dropping it there, not trying to blend it.

It ended up much rustier and darker in tone (who'd a thunk it?) with some areas - like by the locker - getting a nice coverage.

Some areas - like the door - just got big old lumps stuck there.

Using stick and stiff brush I blended in some of the bigger lumps, then gave it all a spray of dull cote.

Then back for more sponging.

Unfortunately I got carried away here and forgot to take photos at each layer, which was the plan

Sponged on were

Doombull brown - darker than the default, reasonable coverage, again pay attention to nooks and crannies.
Scrag brown - plenty of coverage but trying to keep a lighter touch than the doombull.
Celestra grey - very light touch, only in scattered places, not full coverage.
Charadon granite - as above maybe even lighter.
Dy rust (army painter) - reasonable coverage, light touch.

Used a couple of different sponges, several pieces of each, trying to twist the sponge between each dab to avoid repetitive patterns forming. If one area gets too heavy a dab of paint from the sponge make sure you hit that lightly a few times with the next layer to break it up.

The cross beam got heavier layers of the greys, slightly different material or batch.

Then got two rust powders out and dabbed a fair splodge around - blending it a little, but not completely, keeping it a bit rough in places. This all then got hit with pigment fixer - it dakens the pigment slightly, but that's not a issue here. There will be a few bits of powder added at the end, so just adds variation.

And there 'll leave it overnight and examine it in the morning to see if I want to do anymore before next stage. And I need to check my spray as it's fairly old - and I won't get a re-stock till next week.

Thanks as always for popping in...

graven - I thought that might elicit a response from you I just don't think any of my Dredd stuff will see any movement, so use what I can. I need to go through them at some point to see what I can realistically keep - so might be able to sort a supply drop ot for you at some point - I know I have a few East-Meg Judges that I'll never use for start (although the sentinoid will probably find a home )
Cheers on the palanquin - I only have patience as it's needed for my usual glacial pace

Viterbi - Cheers! I'm going to end up with ore little 'bots than I can use with the big servitor drone, so may have to find some other uses for them...hmmmm

Arakasi - Indeed - big flat expanses need something, even if it's rarely seen.
It'll be a battered and weather-beaten truck, but hopefully just this side of the scrapyard when done.

Jazzy - Thanks a lot!

CB - Should have opened the roof and had a tree growing out of it... Hopefully the next steps will pull it back from total write-off.

DQH - Thanks! I think it'll be keeping wheels - I was contemplating a half-track, but there's just too much resin needs removing to get the effect I'd like.

So the rust-bucket looked fine to me, so it got a spritz of dull-cote, just need to wait on some paint for the next steps - should be here during the week.

Not a great deal else gone on - minor bits and bobs. But have 'finished' the sorceror for the Dakka Painting Challenge.

I had only just decided to do the extra pipe in blue-green here - it was buggng me for a while what to do with that. Tried a warplock bronze base for the eyes here instead of the blue I used as a filler - not sure about that. Did attempt a cheetah type pattern on the fur, but aborted that early - it really wasn't right.

And a short time later -

Tried runelord brass on the eyes - like this better, but might still do something with them tomorrow before proper photos.

Highlights on the red - particularly the gloves don't show well here - possibly hit those again. And might add another highlight to the robes just at the extremes - Too subtle with the last one - when the firs few aren't subtle at all The attempts at blending there aren't the best. Not overly happy with the verdigris either, it's a bit too patchy.
Wishing now I had tried some checks along the bottom of the robe, just to break up the expanse of green.

Any glaring issues visible to the sharp-eyed readers before I take final shots tomorrow?

Cheers Brian, there was a highlight there, but it didn't show well, so re-did that.

Also added a touch more highlights on robe and gloves and tidied up a tiny patch of orange on he robe. Added some variation to the lenses, but still not happy with them. Happy with it overa though, it is another one that can join the elite corps of finished minis

Sorceror of Nurgle, Kal The Poxweaver

And didn't fix the verdigris....oh well.

I believe next month's challenge is Support - non-combatant characters. I have several that I think can fit the bill, think I'll enter a handful and see which actually gets finished.

Now maybe some chopping and gluing...

The way you bring bits together is wonderful! I can identify a number of those little drones components but the way you bring them together they lose their original identity and become something else entirely.

Doc - Cheers mucker!

graven - Well, gloves and armour rather than flesh, but still I will do a delve in the near future to see what MC-1 stuff I have.

Viterbi - Thank you, my main reason for entering this year was for motivation to get models finished.

DQH - Thanks a lot - the familiars are great little models.

Theo - Decades even Cheers!

ChaoticMind - Many thanks! Always happy to hear it all comes together.

Gir - There is no school except the old school.....

Llama - The grots keep prodding me....Let's face it, it's about time some actually got finished

LOER terrain piece...

The gears of the dark mechanicus move slowly, but they move...

For now, shelved the idea of an actual complex and building a few individual pieces - always a chance to base them all together later if I want.

My favourite CD basing - here covered in a square textured plasticard sheet as I figured I didn't want it to all be treadplate (although there may be some). Took a chunk out of a small Pringles can and inserted a piece roughly chipped from a plastic test-tube type container - roughly chipped as it's too big for my pipe-cutter and I appear to have misplaced my saw blades. This will eventually become a central pillar with embedded bio-tank.

As an aside, I have some smaller harder test tubes that didn't like the pipe-cutter...

As soon as the cutter is tight enough to be useful the tubes start to shatter - the messy attempt in the middle is the best you can do before it's too tight - it either is too loose to cut smoothly, or too tight for the plastic.

One textured disc and one matching plain disc - slightly bigger than the Pringles top. These will be stuck together for strength. The ring and the other plain disc are a bit bigger than the first two - one will be the bottom layer, with the ring providing a border for the main disc.

Then cut out a few matching lengths of plain and textured for 'walkways', the plain with one end shaped to match the previous disc - the textured layer was then cut to match.

The discs are glued, followed by three walkway sections - switched a few times between 2, 3 or 4 before deciding.

And the border section in place.

Strengthening pieces under each arm.

Girder sections with angled ends, again under each arm. End plates will likely get added.

A thin sheet of pasticard, with a hole cut for the bio-tank. This column will get several sheets with vertical border details. I normally use either thin plasticard or paper to ski items like pringles can to hide the seams. Paper is obviously cheaper, but plasticard has the added advantage of being able to glue bits too.

One end is glued down with superglue and epoxy, and clamped to provide a starting point for the rest.

The whole sheet glued down and clamped at the far end. It's not a perfect fit at the top but that area will be covered later.

Smaller bio-tank created with part of an arm, some wire, a leman russ road wheel and a bit of the tube W&N brushes are shipped in. Thin plastics strips will be used to tidy up the edges.

And a spherical tank - 2 hemispheres, with a strip on the inner and outer surface of one - this allows the other half to clip into place, plus provides an area to paint so that looking across the sphere doesn't show the unpainted surfaces where bits have been glued.

Decided to play it safe with this month's Dakka painting challenge (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/788866.page#10815418) - In a Supporting Role.

Several contenders and I'll see which gets finished in time...

Wasteland trader with his trusty mule, Slaaneshi cultist in the guise of a circus baker, the survey servitor or a manual labour servitor. Also threw in the 2 Heralds - unlikely but always possible....

Current status...

The trader and his mule. Looking to mainly keep it quite light in tone. The chest plate on the trader will probably be in the colours of is trade company - likely to be mirrored on a pennant for the mule.

Slaaneshi circus barker. Had to redo the stilts as I realised I had built something hard to base and paint. Purples and pinks with turquoise on the collar. Staff and stilts will fade between colours.

Survey servitor.

Labour servitor is waiting on a delivery of some zombie heads - my preferred choice for servitor heads.

Cheers for stopping in....

Arakasi - and then it all stopped......

Theo - Many thanks my friend, appreciate it.

graven - Probably my favourite too, I have been building a setting around him in my head, mostly 40k, mostly RT to be fair

Viterbi - Turn your back on the false emperor, the corpse god holds no real power There were plans for broken tanks as well - in those cases the contents would not be quite so.....intact. Still are plans to be fair - just didn't happen in the timeline.

CB - Thank you, gutted I couldn't get round to finishing for the comp.

Doc - Thanks as always.

Hobby time kind of disappeared into the warp during June and July. Started back at work from furlough, playing catch-up with all that head office had done whilst we had all been off...And then redundancy. Today was my last day at work, after 25 years with the company.

It was a head office decision, not my company, and there were over 900 of us across the estate, many of whom I was genuinely shocked by, an awful lot of experience has gone, but ultimately I understand the reasons, and they have been very generous with the redundancy offers, going way above statutory, who h was ok in my case to start with due to service.

So I don't need to panic right now about getting a new job, but nevertheless, not what I was hoping for or even expecting to be honest. So very mixed feelings at the moment.

I did manage to complete June's painting challenge - but bad pics.

July's did not make it though...

And have started trader...

Hopefully August will see more progress.....

Proof of life:

(Early edit - apologies for the blurry pics, forgot how bad my phone was for this )

Happy flappy nurgly drone

Going to get a sibling I suspect. And possibly might see some colour soon??

Bug Eyed Stabby servitor
(with weird membrane legs)

Maybe some sort of roller thing going on at the tips of the wing-leg things. Too many things in too short a sentence, yes, two things can be too many things...
Had more humanoid style arms previously, also want to check some of the Talos arms

Weird stalker growler thing

Not at all sure where this is going, but there's something there. Been playing with ogre heads and skulls along with this one.

A differing variant on the bloat drone

Obviously not from the same stock as the previous bloat drones (really should have gone back a few pages to remind myself if I named them )

Did start a fluffy piece about stasis revival and necro-sorcery, but discounted it in case I immediately drifted off again...

Thanks for all the comments, they were much appreciated (I didn't ghost because of any of them )

A few things starting to take shape, but let's not get excited considering the stop and start nature of the last few pages - definitely more stop than start.

Oh...

Or... I could have guns you guys..
Hmm, but then wouldn't it be better if we just adjusted you a little..

Yeah, it's another flying thingy.

Thanks for popping in, grab as many complimentary tentacles as you can on the way out, who knows if I'll be back soon...

Arakasi - Always good to be back, even when it turns out to be just a city-break rather than an extended stay.

graven - Who doesn't?? The all-father inspires all with his fertile blooms...

Boss - Thank you! I knew it was too good for those maggots - now I just need to find new heads for them And figure out how to fill the sides of that drone...

Kernel - After all, flying is just non-flying but in the air..... Cheers!

First touches of colour:

Nothing fancy, just some basic colours to start working with.
Thinking that the little bone-winged one needs a brother with a skull-head of some sort, just to the in the bare bones a bit better. And need to check that wing as it looks like I missed mould-lines!

Also need to figure out bases for them both...

And a decidedly dodgy looking group starting to form...

Thank for stopping in, look out for the .... Oh....the missing rail, I was trying to say the rail's missing there.....
I'm sure the slime broke their fall, it'll be fine

CB - Same monkey madness, same monkey channel

Slow incremental progress, so long pauses between posts, but I'm still here

Nothing worth new pics on the little drone, but a touch more colour on the bigger one:

And some colour appearing on the dirty disparate degenerate desperados

A close combat servitor type, available for pummeling, bashing, chopping and cutting. Includes hand held accessories for slashing, chopping and sawing.

Your standard PA type, taking notes, making appointments, scheduling time for communing with dark entities...

Basic chaotic inspired space guy with powered armour, handy for absorbing damage, shooting towards good guys without ever seeming to hit them, despite the fearsome reputation of all his dudes.

Couple more gribblies on the table at the moment, hopefully something to show next time.

Thanks for stopping by folks, happy crisis and a merry new fear.

Viterbi - Cheers, that's one of the colourshift paints, still deciding on the final look of the eyes.

Few more coming together...

Just your average gunslinger, got his arm shot off some years back

Big guy, extra hands, dropped his gun when one hand turned into swords

Stuff

And a bit of colour on the ogryn...

Gas-tank will likely be a very battered yellow, or verdigis copper. Did consider rusty steel, but there's rusty blades either side, and a fair amount of brown leather so throwing in something different.

Thanks for looking in

graven - Look, I"m trying to figure out how to use my Dredd stuff in other ways, don't encourage me to start going the other way...

A touch more of that colour stuff everyone seems so fond of on the ogryn chappy...

Finished up the body of the venomdrone, and started in on some colour...

Blocked off the limb holes when I undercoated so I can get a decent join when the wings and "legs" get added in. Still have a couple of options for those, so going to wait till the body's fully painted before deciding on the exact layout - might also affect the basing, currently I'm thinking the main support will be hidden by a flow of goo and ooze from the rear nozzle-pipe.

And finished up the little flying guy...

Still needs a varnish, and the inevitable touch-ups now I've seen the blow-ups.

Thanks for popping in, hopefully if something caught your eye it won't get infected...

neil - Cheers dude, good to see you!

And yes, that is indeed one of the old hunters from confrontation with a new arm courtesy of MEdge, and some new avionics courtesy of some robotic thing somewhere

Cam - You flatterer you. Many thanks!

graven - Mmmm, sticky! Lovely.

Viterbi - Cheers. Those wings have been earmarked for a Nurgley old jump pack for many moons, but I decided they should be actually used on something now.
As for the ogryn, I suspect the wait for the next stage - fully painted - may take strange aeons...

Little touches on the various paint in progress, but not enough to warrant a showing yet, so we have a few bits from the flesh-vats to pass the time...

Although, actually, this one managed to get a splash of colour somehow...

Possibly an excommunicated Inquisitor, and slated to lead the little roving band of ne'er-do-wells currently in progress.

Who can resist a bloated, pustulent figure on a floating disc? Not me...

Was going to be brandishing a pistol in the right hand, but I'm reconsidering that, not completely sure on who this dude actually is yet.

And a little pet for them...

And not one of Paula's blessed...

A humble store owner from the wastelands, very old, probably quite grumpy.
Not sure whether his finished form is the first version, floating just above the ground, no more than a couple of feet, or closer to the second version, able to hover a little higher.

Really need to figure where my compact camera is, these phone shots are terrible.

Thanks for stopping by, help yourself to tea, those tentacles don't really affect the taste...

Switched the merchant around a bit:

Need to tidy up the cables, maybe add some wiring from the hat, maybe add some greebles to the body. Decide whether those are repulsors or exhausts.

A little guy:

A Jimp, or maybe a Klimp...
Was originally thinking it would have a single manipulator, but no, it's just getting legs.
Need to finish up the feet.

Wormy thingies:

Still working out the riders, and configuration of the third worm.

Adeptus Slobbus:

A variety of cables, mechandrites, wires, manipulators and tubes to be added.

And trying my hand at the painting challenge with this guy:

Hopefully simple enough that I might actually complete it?

K_K - Many thanks! Hopefully there's a few more civvy types in the future.

Guardling - Cheers! That combination of part and head have been earmarked for a while now, although for a Inquisitor type rather than a merchant type, so I perhaps should have tried that combo earlier.

neil - High praise sir! Always a pleasure to know you've stopped in

Viterbi - He's not the odd one out, he matches perfectly - all unpainted

Vote noted, but I'm tending towards exhausts - for a given value of exhaust - myself. Pretty sure this choice will come up again though.

insaniak - Thank you very much!

Cam - Oh, right back atcha bud!

Well, the troubleshooter was an abject failure - he stills stands and points accusingly in his bare metal finish....

So, I'll try the painting challenge again in March, with the theme being space marines.
Now, I didn't have a marine laying around that was calling to me for painting, so I went off-piste.

So I need to switch a SUBmarine for a SPACEmarine (I'm sorry...really I am)

Take two subs into the shower? Not me. No, I stick them together, add a dash of cable-tie, a soupcon of bits and It could almost be a starship....

Add wings (flying forward swept for that funky futuristic feel) and we're getting somewhere...

Couple of extra towers, and somewhere to put some feersum enjunns.

Engines in place

A bit of greebling and I'm liking it for a quick kit-bash.

On to the painting.

Hmmm....

Bloody nightmare!

Startied with not being able to find the spray I wanted as a base, but I had a back-up grey. Which was fine for the first two passes. Then the paint started coming up from under the nozzle, splattering the ship and myself.

A quick clean-up and with evening drawing nearer I opt for white. Slightly vexed by the previous, and mildly distracted i go too close and too hard with the white. Not terrible on the topside, but the under decks are a right mess.

After a few (shoddy) panels I realise the white is too much for a base, and so for some reason attempt a shoddy, sloppy, ill-advised wash to bring it back. That and sloppy brushwork meant I really wasn't focused on...well, anything really. Hopefully a few touch-ups, a bit of detailing, and some magic fairy dust will get something that is finished at least, even if it's not going to be pretty...

Talking of pretty....

This guy got some manipulators for manipulating.

Another arm, or rather a stump, a few more cables and another mechandrite and he's just about done.

And another trader type tips up to town..

A rare zen trader he has become one with his cart....

Not sure of his actual wares yet, so not sure just how piled the cart will be, but I'm fairly certain it won't be sparse.

And I had to do something with this lovely torso...

well, floaters are popular this season, so...

That's definitely one of your classic anti-grav motors that is...

Let's smooth those nurgly bits a bit. And pop on a hoody in case his ears get cold.

Getting smoother, much less likely to offend the tourists as they wander the bazaar.
That hoody does seem to have eaten his face though....

Wait.
Wait.
Hold on a minute.
What if we were to make him all Nurgly though?

Yep, big rotting gut, long creepy arms, and whirring turbofans in place of legs. Seems legit.

Probably not so attractive as a prospective retailer for some - although that would depend on the market itself...

Well, thanks for stopping in, help yourself to gum on the way out. I believe it's double-mint. Although there's a chance it's bile and belladonna...

Too bad about the rattle can, but if one can save that ship, it's you. Good luck on getting it finished in time!

And don't get distracted by great new builds, even if it's more fun for us

K_K - Thanks a bunch! Paint job turned out poor, but I do like the build.

Viterbi - Not sure I saved it, but I appreciate your faith

graven - Cheers bud!

Not pretty but any standard, but I guess it got finished....

The Outer Systems Marine Corps LRE 'Flying Without Feathers'

I would say that I may go back and to-do the paint at some point, but that is unlikely to be honest

Nothing else worth showing at present, mistreating to keep the blog at least semi-active.

In some gaming related news though, did go down to London at the weekend and dropped in to Twincon, a small rpg and gaming convention. Small, friendly and a lot of fun.
D&D session in the morning, all survived, even the druid that turned into a pig to lure in a dragon...(me)
Over lunch played a game called Welcome To... A kind of town building game, where you mark out on a map with the aid of drawing cards. Interesting mechanic, and any number of players.
Alien rpg in the afternoon. Immense fun. Ended with us taking off from the over-run colony only to discover eggs on the ship. Two down with face-huggers attached, the marine stunned and trying to fight off another hugger, myself trying to fly whilst keeping a hugger off my face, another hugger loose. The synthetic opens comms with Weyland and informs them the package is en-route. I scream and kill the engines....

The London trip sounds fun, love the end of the alien RPG session

And of course I have faith, a sisters player is obligated to it

WOW!

I just read through the entire blog from the beginning and one word sums up the creativity I found on every page - Inspirational!

I now feel an almost uncontrollable urge to bash together some unbound daemons for my Inquisition.

Oh, and could you please share where you get the metal spider-like legs used in many of your conversions? They look super creepy and perfect for daemonic entities .

Keep up the amazing work!
