Here's the background for my crazy Nurgle Berzerker idea.
The warband of *Biiip* (Haven't come up with a name yet. ) Death Guard, a splinter group of the 4th company, is accompanied by a vile and spiteful character known as Niall Glacain, the disease alchemist (virologist?). Glacain is speculated to have once been an apothecary of the Death Guard, but now he is so much more and so much less. Ever since the Death Guard contracted the rot, he has been obsessed with refining and studying the myriads of vira and bacteria composing the rot, and composing new agents, of even more agressive strands. It is even speculated that he has developed a special viral herbicide, particularly effective against plant and fungal based organisms, such as orks.
One of his most terrifying achievements is the virus known as The Strain. The Strain is a horrible bio-and neurotoxin, that attacks the neural network of the victim, effectively turning him or her into a raging beast.
++++ Adeptus Biologicus Scientifica ++++
Observations gathered from a wounded Adeptus Astartes of the Imperial Fists chapter, infected by the Strain.
Phase 1: The patients eyes start to glaze and stare wildly, while beginning to talk incoherently
Phase 2: The patient becomes agressive, and throwing unprovoked fits of rage. *Physicians note - restrainment is strongly advised*
Phase 3: The patient becomes unconscious and does not respond to stimuli.
Phase 4: The patients muscles begins to bulge and swell, beyond the Astartes already imposing physique. The patient is still unconscious, albeit showing signs of unease and troubled dreams *Physicians note - interesting - do Astartes dream?*
Phase 5: A sickly colour begins to spread on the patients skin, while the musculature swells even further. In some places the musculature stretches beyond the capability of the skin, ripping the skin open.
Phase 6: Two bony appendages begin to rip open the skin on the back, protruding out, like a Mantis Mantodeas (extint creature of ancient Terra) raptorial legs, with razor sharp and spiny blades at the edges. *Physicians note - By the Emperor, what is this madness? *
Phase 7: The patient awakens, showing incredible strength and agression. The eyes are completely white, as if the pupils have disappeared. The patient is completely unable to communicate to or with, using only howling and growling sounds. The patient is to be terminated.
Note: Later studies of Imperial Guardsmen have shown that they perish between phase 3 and 4 - their metabolism seems unable to cope with the physical transformation.
*Physicians note;
I have never seen any virus or bacteria do anything like this. By the Emperor. The patient managed to rip out of his steel chain restraints, and ravaging the entire lazaret, ripping anything in his path apart, and killing 21 attending medicaes before being put down by Astartes guards. The patient took over 5 bolter rounds before slowing down and a further few to kill. The bony appedages on his shoulders seem to have bonded with his bones, muscles and neural network, allowing him to use them as flaying and cutting weapons. A terrible sight indeed. The patient furthermore seems to have grown even stronger than an Astartes, and becoming even more immune to otherwise deadly wounds. It was as if he was a walking corpse, however, none of his motor skills had seemed to perish, and he seemed to react even quicker in combat than any Astartes I have seen. By the Emperor, if I had not seen this patients plight with my own eyes, I would have not believed it. Now I fear for my own life, since I have gotten word of the Inquisition being summoned to investigate any parties involved in the treating of this patient.*
++++ Adeptus Biologicus Scientifica ++++
Glacain uses The Strain as a method of creating relentless and savage shock troops, used in assault. He unleashes the strain on any Astartes captives, be they loyalist or traitor, transforming them into mindless killing machines. These have been sighted in Heresy Era Land Raiders, ramming into the front lines and being unleashed, throws themselves into the midst of the fray, caring not what they kill. Sometimes following them are huge hulking beasts, easily twice the weight and size of an Astartes, with muscles barely contained by flesh. They have no hands, instead having huge blades and weapons grafted directly onto the stumps of their arms, flailing wildly. It is speculated that this is the final state of the strain, contorting the victim even further, but no evidence has been gathered of this.
On the battlefield, The Strained Ones (a nickname given to them by the sparse few to have survived an attack) are to be avoided at all costs - they wreak havoc and can outfight even the Astartes.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I have already begun a couple of The Strained Ones - they will be using the rules for Khorne Berzerkers, and a Skull Champion will be represented by the brute I described - this model is based on the crypt horros from Vampire Counts.

Well, I've just finished my new Plague Berzerker champion, powerfists and all.
As you can see, he's a big boy. He's based on a crypt horror, with lots of cutting, reposing and greenstuffing. I deliberately made the greenstuff on the skin a bit rough, to give some texture.
I may have found the obliterator I'm looking for. Tue Kaae, several times GD winner and former GW sculptor, is a regular at my local gaming club. He has been doing some true scale marines some time ago, and kindly allowed me to cast up a few parts, to use as a base. He's very WIP, but you can see the size I'm going for:

nice work, of course, I especially like the berzerker's left hand blade.
Quick question about the last demon prince. How cured was the GS when you wound it around the whip? I was going to assume that it was completely cured, and kept pliable by its thinness, but there appears to be some mellowing on it, which means that's not the case.
I mean, you must have let it cure somewhat, right, or it would have been to much of a pain in the butt to work with, right?

I just use a basic metal sculpting tool, and my invaluable rubber clay shaper. The metal tool is for the major stuff, hard edges and stuff like that, and the clay shaper is an amazing tool for organic smooth stuff. Try it - it is amazing.

Actually I use it as soon as I mix it. I use saliva as a lubricant (no need for washing, like with petroleum jelly/vasoline), and with a bit of care it is easily done. Since the greenstuff is freshly mixed, it's more sticky, and adheres to the model much better.

Keep the baby, please - I work with childcare (10-15 year olds) and I've got about 100 of them - that's plenty.
I don't think I'll do Slaanesh and Tzeentch. I've actually talked to my buddy (the guy I made the daemon prince for - he LOVES it. ) about him making armies of the other 2 to complement mine - they're his favourite gods, so it's a great fit.
Perhaps I'll do a model or two - I have a cool idea for a tzeentch paint scheme I want to try out, but as an army, they don't really appeal to me.

I agree, by comparison the armor plates, especially the chest, are fairly unadorned and lack that chaos and 'industrial' feeling that obliterators are want to have. The mutated flesh GS work you have so far is a good base point, but I feel it needs more tubing/piping/deathguard style motifs to tie it all together. However both of the arms look great.

Post by: Gitsplitta
I don't know Guita... it gets a "wow" from me! Really impressive figure in stature. Usually oblits have so much crap on them you cant hardly distinguish the figure from the bits. I like yours... clean, simple, identifiable as still partly a man. Maybe a couple of chains for accents here and there... but I wouldn't overdo it.

I really like it, but since you want critisism, maybe adding a bit of guitar string to "tech up" the model might help. To me, obliterators are man, machine, and demon. You've got enough man and (well sculpted) demon, so maybe a touch more machine?

it looks really good but it looks a bit bare in comparison to say your nurgle lord or your termi's. Maybe doing something with the chestplate space or shin pads to make it look more nuglely. maybe pipes from the backpack to the mask on the front, or something similar.
you can see what your saying though, it is a really nice model so far, but in comparison to what you have already done, it doe'snt have the wow factor

First of all, this thread is amazing and if very inspiring! So keep it up!
Next It looks good but I didnt get that WOW factor like I did with all of your other stuff. To me the pose is great and the weapons are great but the core of it just is off... It kind of reminds me of a chick with a really slim waist and HUGE boobs.... Especially in that first pic. The ab section of him is small and the chest piece just pops out! Unless it is a lady oblit....in that case.... "How you doin??"
Last I agree with prime12357 on the guitar strings. Get some tubes and cables running out of him! I think it may help!

I too get the WOW vibe! Nice stuff!
My only nit-pick is that the head still looks too human. but it looks great!
47296
Post by: Biohazard
A rusty chainmail loincloth perhaps with some rebreather tubes added to the facemask? Or a sculpted harness across the chest similar to tha assault marines? Are they going to be a stand alone oblit cult or are they actually part of your DG? If they are Nurgle aligned a nice fly would go well on the right shin? I think once its been hit with paint the armour will work a lot better. I dont think it need too much really. Excellent work as usual brother a squad of these will look proper scary.

Post by: Boss Salvage
I love how unadorned the armor is actually, but that's personal aesthetic - my own chaos renegades have armor mostly striped of iconography (Imperial or otherwise). What doesn't work for me is the combat arm, looks quite cobbled together. I'd much rather a large pincher, or just the double chainfist with some GS gribble, without the orky buzzsaw stuck onto it.
On the body, is there a way for me to get some? Would make for some awesomely hulky marines, as well as custom oblits

Thanks for the replies - I'm still not completely sold on it - I'm considering a blight drone inspired sort of thing, og a Doom Cyber Demon sort of thing, based on the two remaining crypt horrors. Darn obliterators - they're such a pain to get right.

hehehe one of them is called boner.
As for the Oblit, I'd say you will have to integrate his head into the body a lot more. At the moment, he's looking like he's caught the obliterator virus from the neck down, but his head is woefully uncontaminated. I'd say stick some wires into it, have pulled flesh fusing into his armour, maybe a targetting array sticking out of his face?

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I've been pretty busy, both work and playing concerts, hence the lack of updates. However, I've been doing a fair bit of work - the defiler is almost finished paintwise, and I'm in the process of building another squad of plaguemarines.
I recieved the obliterators from High Tech, and started painting them, but I'm not too hooked on them - a lot of the detail is pretty poor, and some of the sculpting is kind of amateurish - at least for my taste. So I took a deep breath, and decided to try and build my own, ONE last time. And lo and behold, I succeded! I actually built a pair that I like.
I'll try to get some pics up later today of the stuff.

Oh my god, he's alive!
Good to hear that you haven't abandoned the project! I think it's great that you decided to build your own Obliterators after all -- For someone who is so talented at converting mindboggingly awesome models, it somehow felt wrong to use a bought model as is...
Until now, I've only ever seen two kinds of Obliterators that I liked, and sadly none of them would have worked for my army. Perhaps yours will change that? Here's hoping...
Anyway, can't wait to see them! Keep up the good work!

Well, for a start: Meade's Obliterators (as well as his whole army) are truly terrifying:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/394107.page
And then there's Dan the Daemon's idea of simply using weapon teams to represent obliterators. Completely different, but great nonetheless if you're not into that whole mutation thing:
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=172506&st=0
Hope that helps!
Update: Whoa, almost forgot this:
http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11977&page=59
Svartmetall's definitely on to something here. And the rest of the thread is simply nuts, too!
47052
Post by: GuitaRasmus
Thanks - I've seen all of them, and while all are very good from a modelling standpoint, none of them really captures what I feel an obliterator should be - Meades are too skinny for my taste, the weapons team, while a good idea, doesn't seem very chaosy to me, and svartmetalls (though his conversions deserve a lot of credit, since they were the reason I got back into the hobby) looks too much like a minotaur, and not enough like a space marine - again, no offense intended.
One thing I'm in doubt about - should the have rebreather space marine heads, or horribly mutated daemon heads, or gasmask heads?
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Well, if you ask me...
- horrible mutated daemon heads are a difficult proposition, because then the whole model may end up looking like a daemon instead of a mutated Chaos Space Marine
- gasmask heads might work. But then, you can never go wrong with gasmasks in a Nurgle army
- to be honest, I did like the rebreather head you used in your test piece very much. My only suggestion would be to add some kind of mutation or augmentation to it: cables that run from the head to the back or somewhere on the body. Added bionic eyes that look like targeting systems. Skin stretched tight across mechanical components. I think Meade's conversions are an awesome inspiration in that respect because they look like the Obliterator virus was something that slowly began to "overwhelm" the marine over time .
All in all, I still think that there should be some kind of humanity left, because that is what makes the models truly disturbing. And the face is such an important focus point for the model, so I would go with fairly regular (rebreather) heads, but with added mutations, cables etc.

I agree with Kraut, the rebreather heads really work for me. I'm not overly keen on obliterators in general as I have yet to see any that truly represent the virus. The guy you had started was looking pretty good though. How about having a tube running from an eye socket to a targetting system on his shoulder or something? Just an idea. Good to see you back Brother and look forward to whatever you come up with.

Please note that both heads are the same - the one on the right that looks wierd is just because of some leftover black primer.

Incorrect. Death Guard and Iron Warriors are superior to the World Eaters; thus, the only way they could be of a level of awesomeness that's greater than or equal to these would be if they were Iron warriors.

I'm a bit stumped on how to bling the rhino some more - any ideas? Especially the top of it seems to be a bit lacking.

Post by: prime12357
You could nail some bodies to the sides of the rhino, going for that crucified guardsman look. (happy easter?) If you don't feel like going as far as bodies, maybe just some trophies on the sides and top. Either way, I'm sure it'll come out fine with paint on it.

Looks a bit industrial, So if you have any wire mesh of the kind to use for fencing, just lay it over the top with holes for the hatch, as a sort of cover if you get what I mean. Some barbed wire, or additional armor plates I think would look cool too. Anything you could make rusty, pretty much. Aside from that you never can go wrong with corpses, some blunt spikes and such, and chains if you got em.

I'm working on the second unit of plaguemarines - the base colours are done, now for the details. Tonight I did a bit of freehand on the standard, I'm pretty happy with it:
The whole unit:

Post by: prime12357
Fantastic job on the standard. It's quite creepy, and it fits the army really well. The only suggestion I can offer is to maybe bring out the red in the worms so that it contrasts with the green and bone. The added brightness might help a little more to pull the eye to the banner. Also, did you just freehand it, or do you have some special secret recipe?

Prime12357: No tricks, just patience and thinned paint.

I've been busy painting the berzerkers/possessed, and they're done, but the pics will be better in daylight, so I'll take some as soon as I can.
The latest project has been this new dreadnought, inspired by a couple of sentinel legs in my bitz box that left me thinking "What if...". I got hold of a venerable dread kit, and went to work. This is the result so far.
It's still very much a work in progress, but I'm really liking it so far. It took quite a bit of work to get the sentinel legs to look like I wanted them to, but it was worth it. I'm a bit in doubt about the autocannon and the shoulder icon (too big?), but it's starting to come together - it also needs some greenstuffing of course.
Any comments and ideas are welcomed as usual, and especially ideas for the banner (this one's only temporary)
33159
Post by: tipios
Nice pose on the legs!!! I think the shoulder icon is perfect The head is cool too. Maybe loose the ork sight on the autocannon.
6515
Post by: Starfarer
Hellll Yes! That dreadnought is freaking amazing! I have seen many, many dreadnoughts with sentinel legs and I think maybe one or two other ever did them well, and I don't think I've seen one that's better than this. The legs look reminiscent of a Decimator, and the daemon prince leg armor works perfectly. The pose is just right and nothing looks out of proportion, and as is often the case with sentinel/ dreadnought combos they look too top heavy, and yours does not at all. The autocannons are great - I actually have a few of those Ork bits stashed away for a similar plan! If I can add one bit of criticism, it's that I don't care for the head. It is well done, I just personally like more mechanical heads.
Once again you've reminded me why this is one of my favorite logs on Dakka. Keep it up!

I love how your conversions are made out of stuff I have in my bits box. As chaos players, I think we get a lot more spare bits than everyone else, and you're putting them to great use. It makes conversions easier while still keeping stylish. Your painting, however, is what really seals the deal. Consider me inspired.

Oh great, now all the Ork players can begin feeling bad about themselves too for not having conversions as awesome as yours. That's very big of you, GuitaRasmus
Seriously though, the Strain are completely disgusting (in a good way, of course): I would do everything to stop them from reaching my lines in battle, which was probably the point. And that Dread is truly something else.
As for the freehand, I have three suggestions:
1.) Use a fly motif. That always works ;-)
2.) Use those three horrible, twisted skulls representing Nurgle's symbol from one of the old Chaos Codices:
http://e4.img.v4.skyrock.net/e4a/warhammer-619/pics/510333500.gif
2.) This one may be a little ...unconventional: Paint a corrupted, moldering version of the original loyalist banner, depicting the Dread as a shining knight during the Great Crusade. Think Bjorn the Fell-Handed, only more corrupted and decayed:
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x120/DarkBjoern/Space%20Wolves/BjorntheFellhandedWIP6.jpg
Should make a nice contrast with the sheer repulsiveness of the model

If you feel like sharing, I also would be interested in your white/green, more traditional Death Guard, paint scheme. I just added a few Nurgle units to my army and I don't much care for the rotten green style.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, everyone. I always appreciate the feedback.
tme0003: It's quite simple, actually - I prime skull white, paint the edges knarloc green (thinned down - this way the lighter edges shine through the paint, giving automatic edges highlights), and wash with thinned devlan mud. Every recess is then painted with badab black.
The metal is simply boltgun metal, washed with badab black.

POST PICTURES MORE OFTEN!
You're a terrible, terrible person doing this to us, it's like giving someone a bunch of crack for a week (Like f***-off-strong crack, closer to heroine really) THEN suddenly stop giving them crack. They go f***ing nuts, trying to find more crack! Eventually they break down, lose their job and become homeless. And right as they're just about to give up entirely, you leak them a little-teensy weeny bit 'o crack to give them that high again!
But they eventually hit another low, and a couple days later you leak them another tiny bit of crack. And so on and so forth, keeping them forever in anticipation of the next bit of crack, but never really satisfying their urges. It's just plain cruel!
GIVE US MORE CRACK! PLEEEEAAASE!!! WE'RE DYING OVER HERE!!!! CRAAACK!!!
PS: When I say crack it's really just a metaphor for your painting. I'm not ACTUALLY a crack addict (that s***'s weak when you got heroine )

I am starting to model my display board for GW's Armies on Parade contest. It's only a rough mockup, but I like it so far.
Here you can see how the terrain makes a nifty nurgle symbol:

Very exciting what sort of terrain are you going for graveyard, swamp or something truly nurglesque

Post by: GuitaRasmus
It'll be done just like any terrain, sculpted, modeled, textured, etc. I am thinking about going with rock/rubble/grass, so it matches my bases, with lots of goodies thrown in. Marsh theme is nice, I'll have to try and think about a way to get that into the theme.

Not to rain on your parade, but I thought AoP displays had to be a 2'x2' square base (not that I've ever submitted an AoP entry, but I seem to remember that). Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

I like the idea, but I think that Rawson is right on the measures.
I suggest, if that's the case, to do a smaller Nurgle symbol as You are doing and in between the circles a proper nasty and putrid marsh/swamp.

That would mean they would actually publish something interesting for a change
Then again, Armies on Parade usually only gets one spread per issue, with most models so small you can't even make them out. That's even worse than not printing them in the first place, because it always leaves you wanting more...

Will you make the board oozy, bloody, terrainy, or city like?

I've been on a bit of a hiatus, real life knocking on my door, turning 30 day after tomorrow, change of job, etc, but I'm back. I'm working on a greater daemon for the death guards, but I won't show it just yet - it's based on a terrorgheist, and I like where it's going.

Thanks a lot guys.
I've finished the green stuff on the wraith spider - and spent 6 hours today painting him, using an airbrush. Great fun, I'll have to use one a lot more. I used teal, purple and green hues, with lots of fades, and it looked great, but in the end I decided it was too dark, and I originally wanted Biel Tan, so I dunked him in some white spirit, and start over.
Hopefully more to come soon. I'm really excited about this, and contemplating a striking scorpion buddy for him as well.
