Thanks a lot!

I'm putting some paint on the raptors at the moment, and the dynamic berzerkers are done - here's a couple of pics:

I'm still experimenting with my photographing - I'm using a couple of pieces of wax paper as a diffuser for the flash, but the models still seem overlit and flat.

Perhaps put lighting on both sides of the model? And wow, I love that guy on that lamp-post-thingy. "MORE BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!.. BUT FIRST- LET ME FIND THEM"

Is it just me or have you left the bagpack-thing of the last 'serker unpainted?

Man you're on fire with these guys. Mega inspiring. I had wondered how the GK head would look on WE Termis and you have shown me that they look awesome. The 2nd Slaughterfiend is looking great as well just needs some trophy racks. The zerker on the lamppost has to be my fav conversion yet. Awesome.

I love the scar like mark around the eye of the first berzerker. He's very cool. The one hanging from the lantern is super well done. The pose is very well done! The two handed chainsaw halberd with the chain wrapping down it is definitely my favorite weapon though! I will likely steal that for some of my orks. It's suuuuper cool!

More amazing conversions fresh from the forge! Loving it so far

If you have a couple of zerkers left. You should really try to make some arm blades, something coming out of the forearms.

Nope - I'm hard at work on the raptors - I really want to get them and the display board ready for armies on parade.

Hooray! Inspiration for the daemon prince has finally struck, and this is the progress so far:

Still needs a lot of work, but the basic pose is getting there. I need just the right head (suggestions are kindly recieved), and he's going to have 4 arms, which I'm thinking of replacing the hands with large tyranid talons. Also lots of green stuffing, making some hooves, and a giant jump pack as a sub for wings.

Khorne Berzerker Dread! *Dang... It's been a year? Update-time!* @ 2011/11/17 05:19:38

I think the heads off the Khorne Bloodcrushers is pretty sweet! I do like the idea of the 4 arms, and maybe make something using multiple rending claws and some talons.

That Khorne Berzerker on the lamp post is really well done.

I've been planning a similar lunging pose for my next DP. I'm glad to see it is fairly easy to achieve. As for heads I just looked for any interesting heads that were around the same size and started cutting them up until I had something I liked. What kind of look are you aiming for on him?

Biohazard: I'm not completely sure - either a raging psycopath, or a more sinister "silent" killer.

Hmmm... Too fantasy-like. It's really hard coming up with just the right idea, since the head can make or break this model.

I can't wait to see him painted up, you've got some mad skills! well done on him so far, I bet more than a few people are jealous of what you have done!

Thanks a lot - really appreciate it.

There's a definite Goro inspiration going on - also, I think multiple limps seem more demonic. I just need to make him not look like a keeper of secrets.

I've pinned the arms in place, and started to give him weapons, and I might have found the head - pics tomorrow. I could still use suggestions for the head, though.

Post by: Obsidian Raven

personally, i feel the DP is a bit too heavily Dark Eldar looking. The head is perfect, but my issue comes in with the Dark Eldar talos arms on him. While they are appropriately brutal for world eaters, i feel they look too surgical to be appropriate. Other than that he is an awesome mini.

Personally, id leave off the tail and do some modifications on the Talos arms to make them look less like surgical tools and more like weaponry.

Post by: GuitaRasmus

I'll probably go with no tail for now, I can always put it on later if I decide to - it's harder taking it off.

Obidian Raven: I can see where you're going, but I kinda like the weapons - I think they'll stay.

I could really use some ideas for the flesh colour, though - anyone? Should I just use the same (very pale-ish) skin tone as my berzerkers? Or?

Excellent work again! I love the DP so different looking but great pose compared to the normal DP kit. How about adding Khorne 'bunny ears' to the DP mask, since you have used the traditional helmets for a lot of your berzerkers, also a few khorne symbols or chains may finish him off nicely?

Can't wait to see more progress.

Hmmm... Maybe it would be cool with bunny ears? I'll look into it.

All the sculpting is now done - now it needs some detailing with chains n stuff.

Nice sculpting! I really like the hooves, he looks badass. By bunny ears I meant the crests on khorne berzerker helmets (dunno the real name for them ) Some chains would look cool like he has just been set free to cause mayhem.

This guy is amazing. He just reeks if pure aggression. Nice job on the sculpting as well. I'm not to sure the Khorne head dress would really work on this model. Personally I would go with either a simple Khorne symbol on the forehead or maybe add some horns.

Yeah, a pale red tone for the skin. The musculature sculpting is very good as well.

Perhaps you could fill in the three arrowhead "vents" in his helmet and change them to a khorne symbol cut-out? Either way it looks great.

Thanks a lot! However, I've unfortunately decided that I don't have the time to finish these guys in time for the danish armies on parade (26th this month) - it would be a rush job, and I really want them to look the absolute best they can - including the display board. Also, I'll probably have a few more great ideas before the next one, so it'll be next year. Oh well, lots of time to work on it then.

Ooh, new stuff!

RE photography: I go outdoors, on a day with a white overcast sky, and take loads of shots with a macro lens, delete the bad ones, and increase the exposure with iPhoto on the remainder. That usually gets me enough good shots to work with

RE Daemon Prince tail: bit late, but I'd have gone for a rudder-like tail extended behind him. Look at velociraptors and greyhounds; they use this to throw their bodyweight around breakneck turns. Tyrannosaurs would also be a good reference point.

Thanks - unfortunately it's starting to turn to winter here in Denmark, so we only get a few hours of daylight, inconveniently the same time I'm at work, so I have to find other ways.

Reg the tail: I know what you mean, but I think that sort of tail would make him too reptilianlike - he needs to look like a daemon, thats also the reason why I avoided the talos tail.

If it weren't for being a spot late on this, I'd be inclined to suggest 2 tails, to bring the appendage count up to 8- ever a sacred number, which would also move from keeper of secrets look with extra arms. Otherwise, that's one nice DP with some very nice gs work.

Thanks! I don't think I'll go with two tails, but I'm still thinking about giving him one. I'll have to experiment a bit.

Btw, Slaughterfiend nr. 2 is almost finished! I'm slowly but surely nearing completion - I still need to finish and paint my dreadclaw, landraider and 14 berzerkers, but then it's time for my first 1750 points game.

Thanks! I can't take credit for the jump packs - they're from maxmini.eu - be wary though - they're great parts, but I also ordered some shoulder pads, they sent the wrong ones, and I sent them an email. I sent another email. 5 emails later, no response. Really crappy customer service.

The rumours are from warseer, and I'm quite excited about them myself.

Thanks. I started with 2 THIN coats of dheneb stone, washed in devlan mud, and highlighted up there with a mix of bleached bone and devlan mud, working all the way up to pure bleached bone. I like darkening colours with washes - it makes them nice and thin, and keeps the surface tension in check.

I think I'll have to agree with biohazard on the head. Also, I think that the braziers should be put directly mounted on his back, as the trophy rack that they're currently attached to looks sort of flimsy. Maybe if you cut away the first spine of the racks (the vertical ones) but kept the others, the torches could be moved down some.

What a wonderful compliment. My deepest thanks.

I've drawn, painted and modeled (clay, stone, etc) since I was very young, and my main interest have always been to convey "personality" in my works. When I came back to the hobby, I pondered a bit on what to collect (I use the word collect, since I'm not much of a gamer - my main focus is to model and paint - they WILL be fielded, but my main joy is creating the miniatures), and I looked at orks (they have a wonderful personality), Grey knights (great models, but not much possibility for conversions) and Death Guard. I really like the nurgle aesthetic (if one can call it "aesthetic" ), but there wasn't much scope for giving them a sense of action on the battlefield, and I've always liked Khorne, so I went for World Eaters. I find immense satisfaction in converting the models, and "making them come to life". I spend at least 30 minutes on each pose, often more, but I definitely think it's worth it, when I look a the army as a whole - they really look alive, each taking part in a massive diorama. I'm really looking forward to making the display board for the army - I can't wait to see them as whole force, on the board.

Sorry for the rant. Once again, thanks for the nice compliment.

It's no problem. let me give you a little background on myself. I've had a pretty dominant creative side my whole life, but have never found the way to express it and bring my ideas to life. My writing never managed to reach the level i wanted. I could never draw, no matter how hard i tried. My musical talent is non-existent. Then i found warhammer, and its been the creative outlet I've been searching for my entire life. I'm not at the level you are yet, but that is my goal. I want models that are able to capture personality as great as you can. Like you, my focus on the hobby will be the painting and modelling, which is wear my true love lies. Svartmetall is the modeler who brought me into the game with his amazing nurgle conversions, which showed me the things i would be able to do with the models if i put time, work and love into them.

I would absolutely love if you took a look at my models and critiqued me, and gave me advice (my blog is in my sig).

Funny - the reason I stopped messing with 40k 15 years ago, was because I got into music and playing guitar, which has been my main hobby (and line of work) for the past 10 years. I love playing music, couldn't imagine not being an active musician, and play at least a couple of shows a month, but it is very much a "team-sport" - with the miniatures I can indulge myself, not compromise on anything and do it whenever I like. I know it's expensive and kind of strange (no, it is - grown men playing with plastic dolls ), but I can't help falling in love with the hobby again in these past 4 months I've been back into it. Funny thing is, one of the things that really got me inspired to surf the web for hours, was Svartmetalls work too - somebody give that guy a medal!

I dont use the torsos or shoulder pads, since I really like most of the plastic pads, especially when I mix them up with possessed pads. However I think that the heads are SO FREAKIN' GOOD, that I'm buying the kit for them alone. The GW heads just don't rock my boat. The forgeworld ones are incredible - exactly what a berzerker should look like.

Im not really planning on using the GW heads as-they-are on my berserkers. I chop off the ears, and stick them on a different helmet like from the warriors of chaos, or i will use a different helmet like one from the CSM set

Looking very good and I second Obsidian Ravens comments

This army utterly inspires the time that is taken with every model to allow for fludity of movement and interaction with the scenery on their bases the bigger models also kick ass instead of being just pieces slapped together on a base.

Keep up the good work man cant wait to see them painted.

Thanks a lot!

I written a bit more fluff, this time about my dreadnought. I hope you enjoy it.

Sounds of screaming, bombshells, bolters and chainswords whirring all around. Nestley saw a squad of guardsmen, using the hull of an exploded russ tank as cover, taking aim at the squad of terminators running forward, towards another squad. Kheloks bodyguard, mad with bloodrage, were oblivious to the small figures hiding in the wreckage pieces. Nestley felt the drug injectors and neurostimulators kicking into action, as he had so many times before. He welcomed the rush of cold, then warmth, rolling over his body. His muscles tightened and burned, and his vision and sense of smell heightened. He felt an incredible rage churning in his body, and with a flash his vision turned blurry, save for the guardsmen that stood out in the darkness of the dusk, as clearly as if they were lit by daylight.
“How dare they even think about defiling the ancient armour of the great lords chosen warriors, with their puny las-sticks?!” He thought to himself – and before he had the chance to elaborate on the thought he lunged forward towards them, as if driven by the spirit of the lord of skulls himself. He skipped and jumped across the wreckage on the battlefield, more nimble than one would expect of his size, and when he was a few metres from the guardsmen, he trigged his chainaxe, the familiar sound of its roaring like an old friend – “For the blood god!” he yelled, and took immense pleasure in the sight of the squad leaders terrified visage, as the chainaxe tore off his entire left side, splattering entrails and blood on his platoon. The shocked guardsmen tried to break away, to swing their lasguns around, but Nestley was already too close. He hacked and carved his way through them like reeds, splattering his armour as fountains of blood whirred from the chainaxe. In a matter of seconds the entire squad was transformed into piles of bloody ruin, shattered bodies and… He caught sight of a guardsman still breathing.

He walked over to the twisted figure on the ground, relishing the sight of terror in the guardsman eyes as he saw Nestleys grinning features, unhelmeted, but wearing a mouthpiece that revealed row upon row of razor sharp teeth. The guardsman was bleeding heavily, his left leg cut clean off, now only a stump pulsating with blood, and large gash in his chest. Nestley kneeled beside him. “H.. h… Have mercy, by the Emperor!” the guardsman stuttered. Nestley angered by the word, but calmed himself. “Mercy?” Nestley growled – “Mercy is for the weak, the feeble. A true warrior would never utter such a word. And you deserve NOTHING.” He grabbed the guardsman by the neck, and drew his knife, easily the length of the guardsmans legs, and plunged it into his stomach, his white pupil less eyes staring into the guardsmans. The guardsman gargled as Nestley gutted the him alive. Nestley threw the corpse to the ground and considered for at moment taking the mans skull as a trophy, but he was not worthy of such…

His thoughts were disrupted by the sound of a hissing bolter shell, rocketing through the air, and a split second later, a searing pain in his left shoulder. He roared as he turned around, infuriated by the shot, and saw a unit of Imperial Fists standing a hundred metres from him – he lunged towards the, bolter rounds tearing into his armour as he ran, chainaxe raised. As he closed in, a heavy support marine, wielding a heavy bolter, swung it around, and pulled the trigger. A rain of bullets the size of a guardsmans wrist tore into Nestleys body, and exploded on and inside his ceramite armour. He felt his anger turn to anguish as the shells turned his insides to bloody mush – he tried to keep running, but fell to his knees, and roared in frustration. “So, this is the end”, he thought –“ I will offer Khorne one last victim.” He raised his chainaxe to his neck, and began to speak; “Accept this humble offer, my lo…”. His words were interrupted by a last bolter shell, tearing into his chest, that exploded within his fused ribcage, tearing apart his two hearts. Nestley fell to the ground as a glimpse of light flashed before his eyes.

******

A sharp, blinding light tore into Nestleys retinas. He tried to close his eyes, but could not. He raised his arm to shield his eyes, but his arm did not as adhere to his will. His eyes began to accustom to the light, and he heard chattering voices and shades walking around the dimly lit room – save for the blinding light directed at his face. His vision was blurry, and he uttered, with great effort, a few words; “Where am I?”
“So, he awakens.” a rusty voice spoke. Nestley found it familiar, but couldn’t place it. “My noble Nestley, you have been wounded in battle, bringing glory to our lord. Nabiskho dragged your husk to the Stormbid shuttle, in the hopes that you could be saved.”

Thoughts whirred around Nestleys head, his eyes stinging from the blinding light, and tried to blink again, to no effort – had he only been knocked unconscious?
“I see you’re trying to get a grasp of what happened, Nestley” the voice continued – “You were hit by no less than 26 bolter rounds – how you managed to still be breathing is nothing short of an act of intervention by the blood god himself.” At last, Nestley remembered whose voice it was – it was that of master black surgeon, Kroenen – he was in the surgery chambers of Lord Kheloks battlebarge. A chill, something Nestley hadn’t felt in more than 3 centuries, ran down his spine.

He began to be able to pick out the shapes in the room – a plethora of surgical instruments adorned the walls, and laid on the table, soaked with thick red blood – the blood of an astartes. The other shapes in the room, cowled hunched figures scurrying around, deep in concentration, doing some unknown task. And he saw Kroenens face, hunched over Nestley, laying on the table. Kroenens face was mutilated, even by the standards of a dedicated follower of Khorne. His mouth was all but covered with a blood and mucous stained piece of cloth, that had once been white, and his eyes were gleaming white, devoid of any pupils – this was the mark of their god, and not unnerving in itself, had it not been for the fact that they sat deeper than Nestley had ever seen before. His scalp was completely bare, a pale sickly colour, and adorned with dozens of open scores in his flesh, each bleeding faintly – forming the ancient patterns of the dark gods. He was wearing full plate, but instead of a power pack on his back, spindly gothic arms emanated from his shoulders, whirring and buzzing, ending in tips forming scalpels, drills and syringes. Nestley wondered for a second what they were working on, when he realised that they were cutting and grinding in him as Kroenen spoke. Another chill ran down his spine. He felt cold.

“I told Khelok that you were unsalvageable, but he and Nabiskho insisted that I kept you alive while…”
“While what?!” Nestley almost yelled.
“While the Dark Mechanicus of the barge prepared.”

Now Nestley felt ice cold. Visions of blackness, horror and an eternity of entrapment flashed before his eyes. “No, anything but that!” Nestley cried – “Anything but that!”

“Alas, my noble Nestley – it is not my decision to make. Khelok has ordered that a venerable sarcophagus be prepared for your body, so that your skill and devotion may continue to serve our Lord and Khorne.”

Nestley screamed in frustration, terror, resentment, and tried to rise from the cold steel table on which he lay, but not a single muscle in his body responded. “Calm him” Kroenens voice said, and a cowled figure rushed over and pushed a syringe with black liquid into Nestley. Nestleys vision blurred again, and he drifted away.

Kroenen stood at the operating table, as the chirurgeon on his back laid bare the last few neural receptors in Nestleys brain. He took a step back, and admired his work. What once had been Nestley, an unusually large astartes of the world eaters, now was a torso, devoid of any extremities, bar the head. The arms and legs had been amputated, to prepare him for the sarcophagus of the ancient dreadnought, and wires and tubes writhed from the stumps, pumping in white ichor. Nestleys face was calm at last, though Kroenen wondered what he dreamt of. Nestleys savage features were still imposing, was it not for the fact that the cap of his skull was removed, baring his brain, now bristling with wires connected to his neural receptors. His eyelids had been removed, in preparation for the interocular connecters of the sarcophagus. For a second, Kroenen wondered how it felt, to be a living machine, devoted to the carnage of battle and spilling of blood – but judging by the insanity most dreadnoughts eventually contracted, Kroenen had no intention of ever becoming one.

******

Nestley opened his eyes again – or where they? His sight, keener and sharper than ever before, was all in shades of green – as if seeing through the visor lenses of his old helmet – however he hadn’t worn a helmet for decades, and certainly wasn’t wearing one now. A series of ancient runes began to appear in the uppermost corner of his vision, and he recognized them easily from his days as a heavy support marine – it was an ammo counter for a bolter, and fuel inspector for a heavy flamer. “Strange” Nestley thought – “Why would there be counters for both weapons?”

Nabiskho and Khelok stood in the shadows of the armoury, watching Nestley awaken, in safe distance, should he repel his new body and run amok. They walked slowly towards him, Khelok in his massive terminator armour towering over Nabiskho.

Nestleys greenish sight suddenly blinked and two targeting circles spun into action, zooming in on the two figures walking towards him – a whirr and creaking of servos confused him, as a groaning noise involuntarily brought a massive ceramite claden power claw into his sight. The sparking mechanism of the heavy flamer mounted on the wrist of the arm clicked, and a small blue flame emerged.

“Brace yourself, old friend” Khelok spoke, as he walked towards the massive hull. The dreadnought was indeed a masterpiece of the Dark Mechanicus – a hulking creation. A ten ton machine, in gleaming dark red ceramite, decorated with dozens of heavy brass rims, spikes extruding from every surface. A powerclaw the size of an astartes on the right side, and a circular saw more than 2 metres across on the left. In the centre of the hull a sneering face of their lords chosen steeds, the head of a juggernaut, sat, eyes glowing bright green, and white teeth glistening in the green glow.

“What have you done to me??!!” Nestley roared in an inhuman vox-voice, taking a step forward, the walls of the armoury resonating with his heavy step – servos and engines whirred and stabilised his stance.

“We have saved you from your dishonourable death, so that you may continue to slaughter in our lords name” Khelok calmly said, this not being the first time he had primed a champion for his new metal body.

“You should have left me to rot on the battlefield!” Nestley roared again, clenching his fists. As he did so the air around the powerfist begun to simmer with electricity and the circular saw spinned into action, engine roaring. Engines and cogwheels in the floors of the armoury quickly spun, and drew the massive chains on the dreadnoughts body and legs taut.

“Brace yourself.” Khelok calmly repeated. “It is natural for you to feel confused and angered by your new body. But you must embrace it. In time you will come to accept this as one of the greatest honours to be bestowed upon a champion of the World Eaters. You will bring untold skulls to our lords throne, and reap terror unto the battlefield. You will slay thousands, and shake off bolter shells as were they pebbles thrown at you. You have been reborn a legend – and as such should bear a name that suits your fate. You will no longer be known as Nestley - take on the name Ragnarok. This is your destiny, as the Lord of skulls have willed it.”

“Yes… Yes, my lord… “ Nestley growled through the ancient rattling speakervox, eyes glowing brightly green and the jaws of the juggernaut head creaking as they moved with the words spoken. “I will embrace this.fate. I will reap skulls for you, my lord. For I am hence forth Ragnarok.”

“Good.” Khelok spoke – “Now, get familiar with your new body and weaponry – I have prepared a practice cage with a few… opponents for you.” he said with a grin, his features all too visible in Nestleys keen lens-sight. “Come with me.”

The dreadnought lumbered down the halls of the battlebarge, following Khelok and Nabiskho, towards the practice chambers Nestley knew so well – here he had slaughtered many a prisoner of war. The blast doors creaked as they opened, revealing the bloodspattered floors and walls of ancient thick steel, spikes and chains protruding from every wall. In the midst of the room, entrapped within force field cage, stood four Imperial Fists marines, still armed with their chainswords. They froze at the sight of the terrifying giant, as the dreadnought entered the chamber, walls ringing with each step.

“I believe you have an old score to settle?” Khelok said to the dreadnought, and laughed a growling laughter.

“I do, my lord.” Ragnarok said throught grinding jaws and gleaming teeth.

Khelok and Nabiskho walked up the stairs of the room to the balcony, to revel in the slaughter to come. With a touch of a screen, the blast doors creaked shut, and the force field cage bars disappeared. Nestley clenched his fists, or so he thought, and the power claw and circular saw activated with a deafening roar. One of the loyalist marines, the squad leader, muttered beneath his helmet; “Know no fear, for the Emperor protects.”

The dying scream of the last marine still rung in the chamber, as Ragnarok stood, weapons still brimming with power, and searched for more enemies to slay. “A fine display” Khelok remarked – “Now, deactivate your weapons, and let us gather these, the first skulls to adorn your blessed body. This is your baptism in blood – Ragnarok.”

Thanks a lot guys!

I decided that my four armed monstrosity would work better as a greater daemon, so I've spent most of friday night creating a new daemon prince - he had to have power armour and wings, since he represents an ascended captain of an assault company of the world eaters - oh, yeah, and dreadlocks! Gotta have dreadlocks!

Thanks a lot guys!

I've already done all the armour tonight, same colours as my World Eaters (but more highlights, more blending), but I'm completely stumped about his skin colour. Any ideas? I was thinking about pale skintone, but that seems a bit boring, and I'm afraid that black skin will be too dark.

Thanks a lot.

I only need to paint 8 more berzerkers, then I have my full 1750 points, but I need a break from painting red, so I started on my Death Guard project. They're incredibly easy and quick to paint, so I'll have my 1000 points done in no time. I use white primer, knarloc green for the edge trims, boltgun for metal bitz, and everything else is washes.

Still works in progress, but you can see where I'm heading:

Outstanding work yet again! Your Khorne stuff looks amazing, but this is some of the best Nurgle I've seen. Are you using NMM? It looks great.
You are one of the guys here on Dakka that push me to be a better painter.

Thanks a lot guys - I love getting your comments.

I'm working at painting the terminators, the lord, and the dreadnought, and busy working on the daemon prince - he's finished pretty soon, and he has a BIG scythe.

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.

Lint: Nope, no NMM - just thinned metallic paints over a white undercoat - the white shines through on the edges, giving it automatic highlights. The I just wash with badab black all over, and give devlan mud detailing for dirt.

The paint scheme for the armour is really simple: White undercoat, knarloc green edge trims (again thinned for "auto-highlights), washed with devlan mud (thinned), and all recesses are picked out in badab black. Then I use baal red, badab black and leviathan purple for dirt and running slime.

A bit of progress on the lord and a couple of new termies:

Holy smokes Guita.... the GS work is amazing on that Demon Prince.... wow!

Too bad your painting sucks.

(that part's a joke obviously)

I really like the "dirty pastel" look of the paint jobs... you see plenty of pastels in chaos armies, but not done in an earthy fashion like you have... and the dark green is a really nice counterpoint.

I really like all of those models and the Dreadnought is by far my favorite! And even though I like the Daemon Prince I can't help but to feel AND think... ... why those raven wings? He looks so much like a Tzeentch Daemon Prince!

Also, about the mace/weapon/slunger on your Dreadnought - where is it from?

Thanks a lot, everyone. I've just primed the Daemon Prince, so he's about ready for paint. Perhaps you can help me decide - dark robes or light robes? I'm thinking a very pale sickly colour for the skin, DG shoulder pads, and black strips on his arms and the skythe... Or? Any suggestions are welcomed.

Cutthroatcure wrote:Hey manz, sorry to pick your brain again but...Can you throw me the painting Recipe for the Claw, Flames from the ball and the Top of the Dred gun...I am doing my WOC army in a purple motif and I really like the way those purples came out so any help or tips would be outstanding for me!

Sure thing. The plasme cannon "power strip" is washed with badab black first, and then washed with a thinned down liche purple. The ball is washed in the recesses with badab black, and then washed with thinned down leviathan purple (not finished though). The claws, which I wanted more toned down, were washed with leviathan purple first, then devlan mud for toning down, and badab black for recesses.

The lord is looking very nice and so is the DP.

The benefits of using a white undercoat and then painting with washes is very interesting and really does look fantastic.

Thanks! Yep, I have never done white undercoat before, always been a big fan of black undercoats (I found them much easier to paint on), but with the new citadel washes (miles better than the old inks), white undercoat is such a pleasure to paint on - I really like how you can blend and control nuances, and I find it really natural, having done watercolour paintings my whole life. I think it's great fun, and MUCH quicker than black undercoat.

Ok, most of your models are really great,
but that deamon prince really stands out.

The pose, the feeling, everything fits perfectly.
Looks like you put quite some thought into it.

For the paint I would definitely go for light robes,
make it look like an angle of death.
It's an enlighted creature after all,
contrary to that dark grim 40k world.^^

Also a color fade could look really badass.
Bright colors on the head, that fade to darker tones on the wings and bottom of the rope.
Or make him glow from within?
Just some thoughts

Right on. Pretty much everything on these guys, including the metals and knarloc green, is watered down paints and washes. Try it - it's great fun and crazy fast.

Very, Very nice conversion-work and painting. I really like how you managed to nail the sense of motion and direction in the Dreadnought with the wreckingball. Topnotch GS-work too, it's a joy to watch.
Also your ability to keep the colours dark and dirty yet still clearly distinct in a pastel-ish way is impressive, dirtily clean one might say! I take my hat off for you good sir, keep up the good work.

Cutthroatcure wrote:Well good cause thats what I am using and am going to be playing with paints all day. So how many layers did you throw down or did you just paint till it was a darker purple?

Well, with washes you get to a point where more washes will just end up like a layer of paint. If you want a darker contrast between the light and dark areas, it can be a good idea to either give it a black wash first (for example, and then purple) or mix black with blue wash (first giving a dark blue wash), and then a regular blue wash. Remember to thin the washes for more control, although they can lose their flowing ability if you thin them too much. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks a lot. No, I don't cast anything - everything is made from plastic parts, green stuff or plasticard.

Cutthroat: You're definitely getting there - but I would suggest being more generous with the wash - It looks like quite a thin layer. Don't be afraid to splosh it on - it flows better that way.

Thanks a lot - it's a dark eldar talos torso (back cut off) and head, with skaven hellpit abomination arms, daemon prince shoulders and cocatrice wings. The robes were first formed with aluminum foil wrapped around a piece of sprue glued to the torso, and then greenstuffed up. Same with the back.

Yup, it's a defiler - right you are. Sorry, not much progress this week, since I've been busy playing the first few games for 16 years. I got ripped to shards by Dark Eldar, and tore an army of Blood Ravens to a pulp - all good fun. I did find out that I need a lascannon for the dread, so I'm converting that at the moment.

Thank you very much for this really nice compliment - it means a lot. Actually, I haven't really invested all that much money in bits - I'm fortunate to be a member of a local gaming club, that has a really nice tradition of swapping and donating bits - many of the cool bits I use are either donated or traded with others. But, you're on to something - I did use 3 sets of 12 berzerkers to get enough running legs for 2 8 man squads. And 5 terminator lords to make my Khorne terminators.

Yup - that's what makes it easier. I just roll out about 20-30 teeth, bake 'em for half an hour, and I can get to sculpting - it dries much harder than greenstuff too. I've experimented a bit on sculpting with it, but it doesn't seem to hold detail that well - however, it's pretty cheap, so probably a good way to make the bulk of a sculpts.

Thanks for the kind words.

A few updates.

A bit of progress on the Dreadnought - After my first few games, I found out that I need the lascannon as a can-opener.

The Daemon prince

And the delicious spine:

Terminators coming along nicely as well:

And I present to you, this weekends main project; The Corpse Grinder:

I've used the corpse cart for a lot of parts, and it's still a work in progress, but it's coming along nicely, and I really like it so far - LOTS of battledamage - took about 2 hours. The banners are magnetized for easy transport.

As always comments and critique is welcomed. I'm a bit on the fence regarding the bell on the top.

Actually, I don't think it'll be that bad - the corpses will probably take a while, but the main paint scheme is pretty much just knarloc green edges and straight skull white primer, with a devlan wash, so that'll be pretty quick.

Perhaps - we'll see. A buddy of mine wants to start Slaanesh and Tzeentch armies, to compliment mine, with a little help from me - he's a very good painter, but doesn't have too much experience with conversions. He's just ordered parts for the Slaanesh daemon prince I'm making for him, which will consist of no less than 4(!) GW kits. Manticore wings, Daemon prince torso/arms, Trygon tail, and a Talos kit, thrown in for good measure and cutty parts.

So, we'll see - I could see them in the future, but right now I want to focus on Khorne and Nurgle. I still have a long way to go on the death guard army, but I'm loving it - it's great to be back in the hobby.

Thanks a lot.

As mentioned before, I'm lucky to be a part of a gaming community that's very keen on sharing bits, and some kits I buy just for bitz - I'm lucky to be an adult with a reasonable income, and not too many expenses, so I can indulge and build the army I couldn't when I was a kid.

I'm busy painting the land raider at the moment - I forgot how big a project such a vehicle is, but I think it'll look great.

Thanks RSJake. I didn't sculpt it, only the back and flesh surrounding it - I think it's a nice theme for the dread and the DP.

I'm doing great painting the land raider - the basic colours are blotted in, and washed - I'm getting to the fun stuff now; drips, runs, goo, dirt, and corpses!

It's been a bit tough for me to get motivated to build a new CSM army with the current codex, but seeing your work reminds me the fun of Chaos is the conversions, and a unit's effectiveness in-game should come second. Thanks for the inspiration and motivation!

Thanks a lot! Yup, I also had to remind myself of that. I originally planned on using the BA codex for my World Eaters, since I thought the chaos dex was so dull, but some of the guys at the gaming community I'm part of convinced me that I should be true to the Chaos dex - there's a lot of stuff in the chaos dex that can't be properly represented by the BA dex. Besides, it'll be so much cooler that I stick to the chaos dex until the new one comes out.

Yep, the best thing about chaos is the possibility of the conversions - I couldn't see myself modelling, painting and playing any other army.

A new bit of fluff, this time DG inspired.

Kant looked at the sky, dark with clouds and except for the sparse light coming from the two moons of Skylaxis, this hellridden planet, it was pitch black. The heavy rain that soaked his trenchcoat had been coming down on them for 3 weeks straight. He felt the sticky, smelly mud of the trenches give in to his combat boots. The air was thick with gunsmoke from mortars and autocannons, and the smell of rotting corpses of their enemies, lying massacred in piles in front of the trenches. Kant could smell it, even through his rebreather unit. “Well, I won’t live long enough to get a lung infection anyway”, Kant callously thought. The sergeant of the 534th infantry battalion was only 34 standard years, but he looked at least 20 older. Years of exposure to the elements of countless battlefields on forsaken planets had taken its toll, and his face bore marks of toxic rain, freezing wind and frag shrapnel in equal measure. A guardsmans life was short and brutal. For a moment Kant felt compelled to compare his life to an ancient citate from Terra; “It is better to burn bright and briefly, than to...” He shrugged and collected his thoughts – If he was to survive this hellhole, he had better get his gak together, and focus on the job at hand.

Their enemies were nothing like what he had fought before. Pre battle mass briefings had informed him that these foes were once guardsmen like himself, traitors, turned away from the Emperors light, and were to be purged to the very last one. He had seen the orbital picts and the once beautiful fields of Skylaxis were a mockery of what once was – every plant, tree and patch of grass rotted away, the skies blackened with clouds of dust, smog and rain, and not a sight of living creature anywere. They had barely been deployed before meeting the first assailants. They had obviously been human, once, but now a shadow of their former selves. Kant had heard tales of walking corpses before, victims of some nightmarish plague virus, but had dismissed them as old wives tales. Until 3 weeks ago. Until he had seen corpses of long dead planetary defense guards, limbering, crawling and running towards them, a moving mockery of life. The first drop troops had barely touched ground before he had heard the gargling yells of his troopers in utter terror, as they had seen the undying, as they had dubbed them, take dozens of las shots, without flinching. Holes had burst through head, chest, and belly, entrails scorched or hanging out, arms blasted off, and still they had kept coming towards them, like a wave of death. Worst of all was the stench. The horrible stench of death, rot and disease. It hung in the air everywhere, and Kant could barely stand it anymore. The drop troopers that had ripped off their rebreathers to vomit at the sight, had, almost instantly, choked on the vile air, and Kant had fought the urge to empty his stomach himself, as he saw some of his veteran troopers throw up their own intestines. The vision still plagued him in his sleep – scarce as it was. He rarely slept more than an hour at most, his dreams interrupted by nightmarish visions of sickness, disease and the rotting corpses of his former platoon members, calling out to him; “Join us, sarge. You will never feel pain, cold or burn again.”

The dreams unnerved him, but he was a soldier of the Emperor, having met more Xenos than most his age, and he’d be damned if he’d let a dream get to him.

“Incoming!” a voice shouted.
A heavy shell hissed through the air, lunging into a trench 50 metres from him, and a bilious green gas cloud exploded out of it. Kant gasped as he saw the guardsmen in it, running out, screaming in pain as the cloud entered every orifice in their bodies. The mens screams turned to gargles as their larynxes turned to liquid and they ripped at their boiling skin, tearing it from their rotting muscles and bones.
“Emperor save us”, Kant whispered underneath his rebreather mask.

The terror unfolding in the trench had blocked out a sound unfamiliar in this hellhole of a warzone. It was distant, but unmistakable; the sound of a bell. Slow, ponderous and dissonant. Kant peeked out of the trench. At first he saw nothing but darkness, but he saw what appeared to be shades walking in the distance. He heard the bell draw closer, and it rang much louder than it should have, from this far away. He saw his platoon next to him looking transfixed at the shades in the distance as well, and snapped to attention.
“Be ready, men!” he yelled “Enemies approaching!”

As they levelled their lasguns at the approaching figures, Kant heard the roar of an engine and a massive tank, looking like an Astartes pattern vehicle raced towards another trench. As it drew closer, he saw a large bell mounted at the top of the hull, and Kant realised that it was the origin of the bell sound he had heard. The vehicle was huge, looking like a moving fortress, second in size only to a Baneblade. However, that was the only thing about it that was remotely Astartes. The hull was scarred, blown apart and rusty to such a degree that he found himself wondering how it could even move. The tracks were ridden with spikes and blades and protruding from the front was two massive maws, impossibly growing straight out of the ceramite itself. This disturbing image, however, paled at the sight of dozens of bodies, impaled and lying on large wooden stakes on both sides of the tank. Some were actually moving and writhing, their bodies contorted in agony – entrails and blood leaking out them, eyeless sockets and mouths open, wrenched in pain.

The tank, utterly ignoring the countless lasgun and autocannon shots ripping at it, ground to a halt right in front of the trench, and the front door rammed open. Massive figures roared out of it, some twice the height of a guardsman. “A...Astartes...” Kant gasped. The figures were huge, wearing rotted filthy bone and green armour, but their heads were without helmets and bald, skin in sickly colours. Masks connected to big tubes connected to tanks with fluorescent liquid on their backs, and arms brandishing crude swordlike weapons, attached to their wrists like xenos claws. They launched towards the poor guardsmen in the trench, ripping them to pieces with the crude weapons, slicing several in half, blood splattering everywhere. A gaunt figure wandered calmly out of the vehicle, almost curiously observing the slaughter – another Astartes, that appeared to be their leader – wearing a rotten cowl and strange mechanical arms, laden with blades and syringes filled with foul liquid, emerging from his back. The guardsmens screams silenced, but the warriors kept hacking at the corpses, chomping the remains to pieces. With a silent wave, the leader sent the warriors storming towards a trench further away, the leader calmly walking behind.

As Kant fell down into the trench, sick to his stomach, he heard a buzzing. A big wasplike creature appeared in front of him, almost the size of his hand – startled, he waved it away, trying to smash it, but it evaded and flew away. Now he heard the buzzing turn into a roar, and saw the air above him fill with thousands of the disgusting creatures, hovering around him, as waiting for a chance to strike. He saw a massive shadow blocking the light, and instinctively turned around, bringing his bolt pistol to aim. He was frozen with terror at the sight.

More to come.

A bit of progress.

I'm busy painting my terminators, a unit of plague marines I put together, and my land raider. Everything is starting to look pretty good, but all the details are taking longer than I expected - anyway, these are MUCH more enjoyable to paint than my Khorne army - mainly because the colour scheme means I don't have to be so careful not to mess up the highlights.

The land raider is starting to look really good as well - I'm looking forward to showing it off.

I also had a great idea (or so I think). Remember the movie 28 days later? I want to have rage-zombie-space marines! I'm thinking about taking a 7 man unit, and using them as Berzerkers - I'll be converting some really crazy running space marines, with disgusting masks with tubes running out from them, and savage blades chained to their forearms.

Anyway, I got inspired with the defiler project, and got a lot further - this time I based it on the soul grinder, since I wanted fleshy parts on the legs, and the jaws are two different trygon lower jaws glued together:

I'm in doubt as what to do with the battlecannon. Wrist mounted? Shoulder Mounted? Other?

Your imagination is crazy good buddy. i love the look of this defiler just as I love most of your conversions. A man after my own heart who doesnt look at a bit as it is but what it CAN be.
Is there any way of making the battle cannon mounted in the jaws of that beast? Failing that I would go for shoulder mounted. I reckon you can come up with something pretty sweet for that.........no pressure

*edit*
Looking at it again the defilers left arm looks like its in a prime position to act as a cradle for the cannon. I would work around that.

I continue to love your work, as usual.

As for the defiler, unless you want to make major changes, I think you're stuck with something back-mounted, or a dick gun. I'd actually go for the latter, as it would sort of de-emphasize the shooty while keeping the eyes up on the shiny demon parts on top.

I'm pretty stuck on the defiler battlecannon thing, so I'll let it rest for a few days.

Anyway, I got inspired to start on a commission for a buddy. He's starting a Slaanesh CSM warband, and I've long been wanting to make a Slaanesh DP using a trygon tail, amongst other things, and he loved the idea. He works at a GW store, and gets a nice discount, so he allowed me to order any kits I wanted for it - so I did.

A manticore, a Talos, a Daemon Prince and a Trygon - it will be expensive, but very cool.

Here it is, so far - theres a lot of greenstuffing to be done, but the basics are in place - I'm pretty happy with it.
