The Brute conversion is, once again, utterly brilliant, although I am slightly flabbergasted by your immense dislike for parts of the stock kit On a related note, if you ever want to get rid of the parts that you didn't like, there is always room in my bitzbox, you know

As for the sculpting, while I myself cannot sculpt for toffee, maybe you should check out btldoomhammer's thread : It hasn't been updated in quite a while, unfortunately, but btldoomhammer is really great at getting crisp edges, which, I believe, has something to do with mixing GS and miliput. Anyway, his thread should have some pretty good advice on how to get armour plathing, trim and stuff like that right, so I can only recommend it.

And while I am a regular, one could say obsessive, reader of this thread, even I had already forgotten about that Obliterator DP: Holy cow, that thing is mean!

One question though, Rasmus: If even your regular Helbrutes are that huge and imposing, what will you do when it comes to building an Alpha Helbrute? Ohh, the anticipation!

Keep up the amazing work!

EDIT: Super awesome update on the last page, in case you hadn't noticed

@ Shrouded lord: No worries - I'm just teasing you a bit.

@ Krautscientist: Thanks a lot - I've just been looking a bit at Doomhammers thread, and there's some really good sculpts in there. I also had quite a revelation when I discovered GS/Milliput - I makes everything MUCH easier, and I pretty much use it exclusively for sculpting (sometimes greenstuff alone, for hair, etc.)

Hmmm... I wasn't at all planning on the Murderpack with the Alpha Brute, but now that you mention it, it's almost too good an idea to let go!

*sound of gears in my head grinding*

You know, I am seriously considering making q thread that gathers up all of the best works of chaos here on Dakka Dakka, I think I could probably just post half of this thread and krautscientists, oh and biohazard's. You guys are awesome.

Loving the new Helbrute but gutted as you seem to have beaten me to the punch with the claw. Haha. I'm planning on making a Murderpack Alpha and was going to use your Nurgle dread as inspiration with the sentinel legs and have plans for a claw similar to yours but mine will be more mechanical. Can't wait to see this guy with some paint on.

Always great work on the conversions, and love the current paint scheme.

For sharper edges when sculpting I use a 50/50 mix of GS and yellow milliput - the real trick is to get the medium really stuck in position, sculpt and smooth it to the best of your abilities, leave it an hour and then come back and use a blunted blade (coated in Vaseline) to get that crisp edge you're after. When it's fully cured you can sand the bejebus out of it too!

Thanks for the advice - I use greenstuff milliput mix pretty much exclusively for all my sculpting, but I use a 1 part greenstuff/2 parts milliput mix - I got the advice from some great sculptors I know, and I actually much prefer that ratio - try it out.

I was sitting in my local gaming club last night at the paint table, and was too tired (I just started my easter vacation today - yay!) to get some serious painting done, so I borrowed a screamer from a friend there, to test out a colour scheme I've had i my mind for some time, using mostly my airbrush. It turned out annoyingly good, and very quick, less than half an hour total.

Now, be nice, and tell me that I don't need a speedpainted Tzeentch Daemon army...

This is weird - I can post new posts, but they don't show up in the thread?

They're here now - weird tho, kept trying to look... had to go to Warseer to read the post.

That's a great scheme, really striking, and doesn't look too overly airbrushed.

You definitely don't need a speedpainted Tzeentch army. No way. Nuh-uh.

Dangit, sidetracked again - the Emperor is disappointed with me. Not that it's anything new, since the last loyalist army I painted was Dark Angels in 1993. But still.

I borrowed a horror to test the colour scheme on smaller models - it works just as well, and is even quicker (about 20 mins, start to finish):

Right?

Bottom line is, I bought 30 assembled, cleaned, primed and based horrors from my buddy, along with a herald on disc and 5 screamers for next to nothing. Here's the army I'm going for (1500 pts)

HQ:
Lord of Change, level 3
3 heralds på disc, Level 3, one has exalted Locus

Elite:
3 flamers

Troops:
3x 11 horrors, irridescent horror

Fast:
9 screamers

Heavy:
1x winged daemon prince of Tzeentch, daemonic armour

I got home last night, high on the paint scheme, rummaged through my bits boxes, and found some interesting bits - I quickly knocked this prince together, he's a little rough, but It'll be cleaned up:

I've also got a balrog, that'll become a lord of change, and I only need to get two chariots of tzeentch (disc heralds and screamers) and a pack of flamers, then I'm good to go.

My apologies, Emperor - I'm sorry, but the ways of fate are changing.

Hobby ADHD - it's a wonderful thing!

The Tzeentch daemon prince is really cool, you have a good eye for creating these walking/stalking/flying things out of bitz.
I've been wondering if those phoenix wings would ever show up in a conversion somewhere...

Great work as always!

The Lord of Change looks cool, but are you going to Chaos-ify the eagle head with some of your GS magic? It looks like a plain eagle head that doesn't know what it's doing on a daemon's body at the moment.

Also, for the Balrog LoC, you should totally make it looks like some sort of colossal, horrifying Flamer of Tzeentch; give it multiple mouths spouting flames all over its body and stuff like that. I think that'd be really cool.

You can rest assured that he will be completely mental - I have an insane idea for a head. He will indeed be a Lord of change/Master of insanity.

I don't think I've ever said that - I wouldn't want to have to choose between my two absolute favorite things to do. Still, both hobbies sort of ebb and flow - sometimes I feel more like playing music, sometimes I feel more like modelling and toying with little plastic men - ah, the beauty of choice. Thanks btw!

Great daemon prince, i love th dynamism of the pose...if you would stretch his left arm and build some kind of flames coming from his palm, it would be amazing imho. One small question (and I hope I'm not overstepping): will you not use the whole Phoenix wings but just the frost edges??

I don't think they're rubbish at all, and I'm quite proud of them - but there are some really bad conversions among them - my first daemon prince and obliterator comes to mind.

Not at all overstepping - the frost edges was lying around in my bits box, so I used them - I'll sculpt an edge on them, so they don't look incomplete.

Btw, I just bought a complete phoenix today, for my Lord of change, and been spending all night making the basic structure of him - he's going to be INSANELY weird. Pics tomorrow.

Here's the first basic structure of my balrog-based Lord of Change - obviously there's lots of greenstuffing to be done, and he's gonne have mouths and eyes around his body, but I really like where he's going:

"Wait a second, isn't that..."

Yes! Yes, he has a hand for a head! Explanation will come later, when I write up some fluff for him.

Yeah, seconded Not sold yet either, but then this would be the first of your models that I don't like, so I'll happily assume that you'll make it look awesome in the end -- plus I am getting a distinct Guillermo Del Toro vibe from the model, and that cannot be a bad sign

And, in any case, the body and overall build are already beyond reproach. Fantastic work!

This guy took facepalming to a whole new level ....I like him, he screams Tzeentch all over, and it's the first not vulture-headed approach to the Lords of Change.
I think that two other heads, one on each side of the neck would make him look like the incarnation of madness (which is a good thing the way I see it).
Great mini, looking forward to see how he'll end up!!!!

There's two different models. The smaller one with the eagle head is the prince, the "Lord of High Fives" is the Lord of Change.

I think it's kinda cool that the head is parting the waters - I'm really hooked on the concept myself, although it might need some finetuning. It's screwed up in just the right way, tzeentch-style.

I love the hand one, I think it would possibly look better if it didn't have the thumb. Then that would leave the three fingers on top to form a sort of Slig mouth from the Oddworld video games ( if you are familiar with them ?)

Then green-stuffing some jaw muscles around the connection between the hand and and lower jaw would tie it all together nicely I think It will turn out to be the best model Hands Down !

Very cool! The pose is really natural despite all the limbs and crazy feet/leg construction. And I love the hand-head. Although I do wonder if it would be even creepier if some or all of the fingers instead of having claws ended in open tube-like holes like the old depictions of Horrors and Tzeentch himself. Just a thought!

This sort of thing is why I loved the "Cubes of Tzeench" army- I figure, people just don't have enough imagination when it comes to Chaos. There's almost nothing that requires you to have a head for your head. Or have hands for hands. Heck, look at the Hellbrute- the guy's got mouths in the middle of his hands and tonguetacles coming out of an armpit- and he's meant to be generi-Chaos, not even dedicated to the Lord of Change!

I say go ALL OUT with the mutations. Heads on at odd angles, strange growths, tentacles, scales and feather patches, the whole shebang. Heck, maybe even add some non-bird wings someplace.

Thanks! I'm rather inclined to it myself - like I said, I think it's really cool that it parts the waters somehow.

I made a herald out of three of the amazing little blue horrors from the chariot of Tzeentch - they have somehow stolen a heralds disc and his gadgets, and are now pretending to do the Heralds job on the battlefield - that is, when they stop squabbling long enough to conjure up some spells.

Sadly, I can't claim the idea as my own; it's stolen (how appropriate!) from Porcos amazing Tzeentch blog on Warseer:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?372125-Porco-s-three-colored-daemons-army

Guita, if I could get a moment of your time to get some input on a potential project, I'd greatly appreciate it! I've been re-watching the Evangelion rebuild movies lately, and I'm inspired to try making a Chaos-ified Eva unit to use as a Knight counts-as. The thing is...I'm really not sure how to go about doing that! There are other models of Eva available, which I may consider - though this one is particularly well-known, and it's own bestial form can be rather demonic in appearance.

Anyways, I'd greatly appreciate some help with this one!

If you have to get sidetracked with something, making an awesome model like this is a great way to do it. Probably the most awesome and creative Tzeentch Greater Daemon I've seen, and if you keep the paint standard from your Screamer it'll look incredible when done.

Thanks!

It's been a while since my last update - unfortunately, I've had a break-in in my Apartment, and while they did'nt touch any of my minis (though the thief had opened a couple of my cases with finished minis, and probably just shook his head), he took my laptop and my digital camera, so it's taken a while to get up and running Again. On a positive note, I took the opportunity to get a better camera (Canon Powershot), and while it's not a pro level camera in any way, it's still a lot better than my old Ixus.

I've been sidetracked Again - I think I need a break on the army Projects. As some of you may remember, I've said I'm not much of a painter. That's not entirely true, though. I DO like to paint, I just often get burnt out on painting armies.

Therefore, when my local gaming Club began talking about the Heralds of Ruin Kill Team rules, I was all giddy and excited. I love the skirmish format, the way that I can go all in on conversions, paint and fluff, while still being a manageable task to complete it.

So... Long story short; I'm taking a break from full-scale 40k painting/modelling, and focusing on my new project, an Inquisitor/Grey Knight warband for HoR Kill Team. I'm sure I'll return to the Dark Mech and Daemon armies in a while, but for now, I need a bit of change.

BTW, I've also just started a blog with two of my wargaming buddies; http://bitteroldpainters.blogspot.com/ I'm the only active writer at the moment, since it's finals time for the two others, but keep watching, there'll definitely be stuff worth looking at from the very talented guys there.

So without further ado, here is the Inquisitor warband so far:

My Inquisitor, Dmitrij Dostojevskij:

Grey Knight Terminator wardens:

Grey Knights:

Daemon Host:

Arco Flagellant:

Very sorry to hear about the break-in, Rasmus! But at the same time, it's great to see another update from you! As far as I am concerned, as long as your regular bouts of hobby ADHD result in such amazing models, you can happily play hobby butterfly as long as you like Oh, and your blog's definitely bookmarked, of course

As for the models themselves, I'm slightly uinmpressed by the Grey Knights, because, well, they're just Grey Knights

The Inquisitor, daemonhost and arco are absolutely brilliant, however. I think the daemonhost might be my favourite of the litter: I am stil marveling at how you did what you did!

In case you're going to build more Inq-related models, may I suggest you take a look at the INQ28 forum over at the Ammobunker as well? It's a very active and inspiring bunch of hobbyists over there, and seeing your models over there would be quite an asset, indeed. Plus you might get quite a bit of inspiration out of the deal.

Anyway, keep up the amazing work!

Thanks! You can rest assured that some of your own crazy Inq28 creations has played a major factor in swaying me over to this format. I especially love the little mutant sniper, and the story related to it - I may very well steal some ideas from you, if it's cool with you?

I'll definitely check out that forum - there's so much cool stuff going on around the warband format 40k scene - spiky at pack, punk moth, officio convertorum - I just had to get in on all the fun.

I agree on you with the grey knights - they need some more bling, but I kept them more or less as is, because I think they're basically great models.

I'm very fond of the Daemon Host as well - that's the reason I wanted to do one; the rules kinda suck, but it's such a great concept that I had to try to pull it off. He still needs a lot of stuff, chains, candles, etc, but I like the basic pose a lot. It took a great deal of pondering what parts to use, but when I found the plaguebearer arms, it sort of fell into place. I used the bare torso cultists torso, as well as a flagellant head and a tomb banshee lower body, if you're interested.

@ Whalemusic; Yep, much more variety in your army lists and better rules, IMO. The sword is doing just that - it looks cool.

Sure thing - I just roll out a thin sausage of green stuff, and roll it flat with a pen or brush, wetted with water. It might help to let it cure for 15-30 minutes first.

Thanks a lot.

I experimented with my new camera tonight, and while it can still be improved, this is probably the first time I've ever taken pictures of my minis, inside, at night time, using only the electric lights in my apartment - no fancy photolight, just some camera adjustments, and a 5$ IKEA white fabric box as a light box.

I've done some more work on the Daemon Host - he's almost finished, just need to greenstuff some shackles for the chains on his wrists, and some last detailing.

I've also started a Sister Repentia - she obviously needs another head, so this is just a placeholder, but I kinda like the agressive pose, and the completely over-the-top Eviscerator:

And lastly, another new character - Dmitrijs Interrogator-Acolyte, Herr Doktor Stefan Kraut (A small gesture to the always gentlemanly and nice mr. KrautScientist):

(This head plus the Tomb Wraith combo is stolen off the amazingly creative Jeff Vader from convertorum.blogspot - check out his blog, it's incredible work.)

I've finished the Daemon Host, with the last greenstuffing done:

I've also put a more suitable mask on the Sister Repentia - I know they're supposed to be bald, but I think the hair is so nice, it'd be a shame not to use it:

I was at our local gaming club, Emperors Pride, last with Johan, and feeling a sudden urge to start painting the warband, I took a deep breath and grabbed my brushes.

I had already decided that I was going to try out zenithal priming (read more about this technique here ), and started out by priming Dmitrij.

From there on I started splashing paint on him, very thing glaze-like layers of paint, washes and inks. It was a very complicated process, much more than it needed to be, because I had basically no idea what I was doing (I still don't). His armour has also gotten some edge highlighting, to sharpen up the edges.

I like the result so far, but to be honest, I struggle with painting to a really high standard. I can do good tabletop quality pretty well, but exhibition grade painting sort of eludes me, and I'm a bit annoyed by it. Oh well, I'll just have to keep practicing.

I deliberately kept him in very cool, muted colours - I'm trying to get some of the feel of John Blanches paintings and palette. Of course, he still needs some detail work, and his back-banner-thingy done:

Let me know what you think.

Sure thing.

I start out by airbrushing the whole model with P3 paints turqouise, then airbrush extremities (hands, tails, feet) with GW Emperors children pink, making sure I get nice even gradients. Then I wash the turqoise with GW Coelia Greenshade, and the pinks with blue wash, using medium to mix the washes while wet (again to keep the gradients nice. Then the whole model gets an EXTREMELY light drybrush with pure white (to pick out edges), and lastly the detals are painted as usual. The whole proces takes about 20-30 minutes (excluding drying time), and would probably takes less when doing batches.

I really like the colours and I think the painting is far above tabletop standard.

The red colour you've got going is really nice.

I like the detail to his face. Seems like a fairly young Inquistor that's had some tough times.

That Repentia model is fantastic, I think rotating the saw blade/cycle part round would make the model feel like it was flowing better. As if she is gearing up for a massive scything motion.

I'm considering rebuilding the Eviscerator, so your suggestions are very welcome.

I got a good long night of painting done tonight, and I managed to finish Dmitrij and started on the little sister:

Even though I had my initial doubts, I ended up quite happy with him. It's quite a departure from what I usually do (I only used white for mixing into colours for highlighting for example), but I like the look, and he has the right sense of menace.

Sister:

What haircolour should she have?

Khorne Berzerker Dread! *Dang... It's been a year? Update-time!* @ 2014/05/17 06:24:56

Post by: Deunstephe

Those are beautiful models, Dmitrij looks absolutely menacing and amazing. But try changing the background you're taking pictures in for these models, they're so cool and muted that the black really tones it down and makes it look darker than it probably is.

This might be weird, but I think the Sister's hair should stay the way it is! Maybe a few more highlights here and there - but overall it looks very good as-is.

Now that he is finished, the Inquisitor looks absolutely stunning. The sister is going well too, I think the you should either paint the hair black to intesify the overall grim look, or a really bright colour (orange/red or even blonde) for contrast. And maybe the Evisvcerator would look better with slightly bigger handles (the wire just looks too thin to hold all this mass imho).
Can't wait to see what's coming up next

That Inquisitor turned out really well! At a pinch, it could be dirtier and grittier, but it certainly has a dark and brooding feel about it, thanks to all the great conversion work.

I think the sister is also coming along nicely, though the colour of hair is indeed not an easy question. I would advise to go for white/light grey, actually not that much different from what she has now. Maybe you could also pull off a blood red, but I'm not sure how that would fit to the rest of the model...

Beautiful painting! The glazing gives your reds and earth ones such a great soft glow.

The sister looks great so far, and I like many others actually like the way the hair looks now. One idea would be to mostly stick with what you have, but darken the hair as it moves closer to the head, with almost black roots; basically just exaggerating the fade you already have going on.

To be honest, I'm kinda on the fence on the paint job - while I think it conveys a good feel, I think it could have been better - the freehanded scripture on his body just didn't want to go as planned, and the transitions on his torso isn't as smooth as I'd like. The latter I blame my crappy apartment lights for - I usually paint at my gaming club, where there's much better lighting.

Anyway, enough with the excuses - here he is:

I also got some more work done on the preacher (now he has 3, count 'em 3!!! loudspeakers to preach the emperors holy words):

... And some cables for the arco flagellants helmet combat drug supply:

Whoa, buddy, I'm the one that asks the questions here!!

The flies have been scraped of the speaker, and been thoroughly sanitized. No trace of Nurgle here.

The daemon host looks pretty good in spite of your worries - 'scripture' at this scale is incredibly hard to pull off!

A light glaze of Liche Purple (or similar tinge, maybe red or blue?) over the whole skin area might help pull the blending together - I can't blend for peanuts, so I dry brush my highlights in and then soften then transitions with glazing. Just a thought.

The flagellant looks like he'd go a few good rounds with Spiky Rat Pack's Arco Evisorators! Great model, very aggressive and dynamic.

Not grimdark enough.

He needs a throat insterted vocoder. (But the beard would cover it up!).

Awesome! I love the preacher.

Daemonhost looks great and i think the scripture works but if you want to smooth the shadows and highlights on the skin I'd consider washing the shadows with a lighter color, kind of a glaze, but thinned so it pools in the shaded recesses. Sounds wierd but it's worked for me when I wanted to tone down contrast without darkening the overall color. IE Light gray, white, or something opaque added to a super thin wash.

Well, could always cut out his lips and teeth, have a synthesizer or cables going straight from his throat to the speakers. How's -that- for grimdark?

Sure thing. It's a reposed Ghoul King body (been saving that for a very special conversion - this was it) from the Zombie Dragon, a plaguebearer head with a sculpted mask, and whips from the talos kit.

Thanks for all the praise guys - definitely fuel to keep me going.

An insanely talented gentleman by the name Jeff Vader of Officio Convertorum mentioned a couple of weeks ago, that he thought it would be cool if I truescaled my marines, since I have so few. I love truescaled marines, but I was a little reluctant, since I have built a couple of power armoured true scale guys before, but never tackled a terminator. However, last night, while trying to fall asleep, it came to me how I should do it - Obliterator legs! I've used them before on Pandemion, my Nurgle lord, but this was a whole new challenge.

Anyway, I set to work, and while there is still a lot to be done, I really like where these guys are going (lots of sculpting a detailing to go):

I had to completely redo the halberd, since the normal version looked ridicoulous on this scale. It obviously still needs some cleanup and detailing. The torso is made from a chaos terminator back, combined with the GK termi front, and sculpted to fill out the gaps. The thighs and groin are from the GK termies as well, with some bulking up with putty done. The shoulderpads are from Micro Art Studios, if I'm not mistaken (I bought them 3 years ago, been lying around my bitz box for a looong time.)

The "regular" Grey Knights:

Very simple conversions - basically a terminator, with the back vents cut away, a backpack added and heightened by sculpting a mid section.

And a pic for scale - they are pretty impressive in size:

My thanks!

I've been working on blinging up the GK's a bit, they needed lots and lots of purity seals and daemon hunting gadget, so I raided my own bitsbox (and a couple of buddies bitsboxes as well), for all the tiny pouches, scrolls, purity seals and anything else I could find. It worked well in bulking up the terminator a bit - I'm really liking this guy:

Here he is with his two battle brothers, who have also received some bling:

I got an idea to make another cherub for the preacher, and gave him a chainsword as well - I think it works, although the cherub still needs some work done:

And lastly, a group shot of the warrior acolytes:

I apologize that the pics aren't better, but for some reason I can't seem to take some really good ones today - I've tried three times, and I just gave up and used these.

Guita, I LOVE the truescaling you've done on the Grey Knights thus far, but there's one little detail that's bothering me(that's really not your fault, it's GW's but especially evident here).

I feel like the shoulders are too high. Especially on the terminator I just can't escape the feeling that his arms are emerging from the Astartes' ears.

Ron at FTW shaved down the connection point to lower the arms on his truescale models, and it may be worth it to do something similar with these guys. They're so awesome as is, but that little extra touch can go a long way

Those are Dark Angel robed legs.

It's been a bit of a busy week at work (new school year approaching, classes that need to scheduled and all that), but I've managed to do a bit of work on the warband.

Something about the Terminators pose had been bothering me, and after scrutinizing it, it occurred to me that he was leaning to much forward - I promptly ripped him off his base, made the rubble pile a little bigger, and hey presto, much better - it's a subtle difference, but an important one, IMO:

The preacher is almost finished - here are some different angles:

A year ago a buddy gave me a unit of stripped FW Renegade Ogryns, saying: "Do something cool with them". They've been sitting around my bits box since, but I got an idea, very much inspired by KrautScientists great conversion here.

I haven't finalized the fluff, but I'm thinking something along an Ogryn Miner, who's somehow been saved from a terrible mining accident by the little twist that's sitting on him. The Ogryns grattitude has resulted in a very strange partnership:

Lastly, I tried getting a good shot of the whole warband - it's not great, but they look pretty good all lined up:

Such an impressive group! So glad you true-scaled the terminator because I love how the Inquisitor is now clearly wearing custom human-sized terminator armor. I thought I had commented on the true-scale guys before but it looks like I didn't; they're really amazing, but I also wonder if the terminator's arms are just a touch too high. If they came down a fraction his hands would be hitting at a more comfortable spot by his thighs too.

The priest may be my favorite. Look forward to seeing how you paint the rest of the group.

Back to Kill Team! I've been taking a break from 40k, the hobby in general, and refurnishing my apartment, but I'm starting to get the itch again.

I'm starting a Kill Team campaign in my local gaming club, Emperors Pride, and being the mad modeller I am (or just an idiot, your call), I couldn't just finish my Inquisitor Warband. I had to start a new one. I decided on my old love, Nurgle Chaos Marines. I couldn't just use models from my (fully painted) Death Guard army either. No, I had to do another truescale project.

So anyway, I went to work, and have churned these out over the past few days. The Plague Marines are the only ones that are completely ready for paint, the other ones need a lot of greenstuffing and detailing, but I wanted to show them off. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a comparison pic, but the Plague Marines (based on GK terminator legs) really tower over a regular space marine, and completely dwarfs a cultist).

Plague Marines:

Terminator Champion with heavy flamer and lightning claw:

Cultist with heavy stubber (There will be 5 with autoguns and a heavy stubber, and 5 assaulty ones)

Raptor with flamer (actually a refurbished old project, found while roaming my bits box)

Spawn:

As always, please leave a comment - I love getting feedback and critique.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Btw., a quick and crappy iPhone size comparison pic - the comparison marine is one of the new Sternguards. They are BIG.

A bit more work, but not too involved;

I use the GK terminator legs, (scraped off details, and filled out the scripture with green stuff), added about 2-3 mm of waist, and used Terminator shoulder pads, as well as arms. Otherwise they look way too small.

PatrickDiomedes wrote:

Not quite sure, I think it was 2 mm, scraped down into the right thickness. I go by eye on these kind of things.

Sure thing. I think they're more dynamically posed, and I liked that they didn't have any knee caps - some of the terminators do. I actually think they're a little bit bigger too.

I was struck by inspiration (or madness) and decided to actually get some paint on the Nurgle Kill Team, and I'm determined to actually finish these - which is usually the bane of my projects, the paint part. I'm terrible undisciplined when it comes to finishing the whole project, paintwise - but not this time!!

After trying out a bunch of greenish/brownish colour schemes, and not being completely happy with the result, I ended up using the colour scheme from my Death Guard army - it looks like they should in the fluff, and I think it's much easier dirtying up white, than trying to make dirty green not look like a blob of filth on the tabletop.

I used a heavily modified version of my army paint scheme, based on a bleached bone basecoat, zenith highlighted white, washed with thinned brown, and going completely apeshit with weathering, rust and grime. I like it so far.

I went for a very Blanchitsuish vibe, very grim dark - what do you think?

I've been a very busy little bee this week, and finished off one of the cultist units - Actually, I had to strip them once, since my first colour scheme didn't fit in with the power armour boys, but I'm pretty satisfied with these. Pretty much all washes on a white primer:

I can write it out, if someone wants to know

That would be great - at least a general outline, since 30 steps is a lot!

If I were to guess, I would say you use thinned washes with at least three purposes - a black one to create shadows, a brown one for weathering and softer shadows, and then some washes to create colour.

Khorne Berzerker Dread! *Dang... It's been a year? Update-time!* @ 2014/08/18 12:21:50

Post by: GuitaRasmus

Here's the recipe for the cultists - not quite 30 steps, but enough that I had to write it down not to forget it.

1) Prime white
2) Wash whole model (except flesh and hood) in Nuln Oil
3) Wash green parts Waaargh flesh ( thinned)
4) Wash brown parts Agrax
5) Wash brown parts thinned Steel Legion
6) Wash hood with 50/50 thinned Army Painter Strong Tone
7) Wash black parts 50/50 thinned Vallejo Air Black
8) Drybrush green parts Elysian Green
9) Give the whole model an EXTREMELY light drybrush of pure white (edge highlighting)
10) Wash black parts Nuln Oil
11) Wash brown parts Agrax

12) Wash metal 50/50 thinned chainmail
13) Wash metal Agrax
14) Wash metal Nuln Oil

15) Paint flesh Pallid Wych Flesh
16) Wash with 40/40/20 mix of Sepia/Ogryn Flesh/Biel Tan green
17) Paint recesses of skin with Ogryn Flesh wash
18) Drybrush skin extremely light pure white
19) Wash Green parts with a 50/50 mix of Ogryn Flesh/Agrax Earthshade.

20) Using a sponge, dabble on small patches of Agrax and Nuln oil on clothes, etc. to make them look dirty.

21) Glowing eyes painted with Billious Green (Ancient paint pot), highlighted to almost pure white.

Rust: Model Mates Rust Effect (amazing product - made from real rust).

Blood: Tamiya Clear Red, with a small amount of black.

That's about it.

That plasma cannon + bayonet, so good And another in a great line of biggerized termis made using oblits, extremely tasty - oblits are possibly the model that benefitted the most from finecasting? Because easier to chop up and make into other stuff

Those Nurgle marines are simply great, very good builds and painting. And the terminator champion is just as great and both his raged weapons are amazing Could we get a better picture of his CC arm??
Oh and where do the dangling chains with hooks come from?

Cool model (and cool name). You're really leading the way with these truescale terminators and this kill team game in general.

It's just a finecast obliterator, cut to bits.

I've finished the painting on my evil Nurgle Champion, Abominus. He seems a bit darker than the others, mostly because the trims are more dominant on him, but I like the result - he seems very dark and looming, and I particularly like his pet vulture.

I've also almost finished greenstuffing the spawn - can't decide if it needs more arms or not;

What I like most about Abominus is his cc weapon. Not that a power fist wouldn't be enough, but he gets that kick-ass Dark Elder blade which just looks lovely.

The Spawn is also really cool. I love how on any other Chaos Spawn, one arm would've been enough: Either the Ork klaw or the mouth tentacles from the Tyranid thingy, but you just jused both on the same side.

Thanks! I like assymmetry in miniatures alot, and I think the composition is much stronger, with large amount of assymmetry - it's a CHAOS spawn, not an eldar.

I'd also like to share a little piece of fluff I've written; the other players and I in the campaign, write small pieces of background stories, to narrate the games, and give challenges for grudge matches, etc. The teams have just fought plague zombies in the depths of a hive city:

Ichabod stood before his masters chambers in the dark, damp cave, located in the darkest depths of the Hive. The cultist leader was struggling not to tremble. Even though the blessed ones, the undying walking avatars of the great fathers might, had done an admirable job of distracting the filthy xenos and the misguided followers of the carrion emperor, they had not proved enough of a threat to keep them from getting hold of the comm interceptors. His master would surely not be pleased.

He took a deep breath, Oh, to be so blessed by the great Father – to be such a magnificent champon of Nurgle, as his master was. Ichabod knew that he would never rise to any such position, although he was surely the most blessed of his cultists. His teeth was falling out, he had no hair left, and wonderful boils and buboes was forming around his body. He was especially proud of a large gangrenous wound on his face, where the great fathers little white children was constantly gnawing away at his flesh.

He knew he had to deliver the news to his master. Though he was proud of the last two victories, one against the misguided followers of the so called machine god – as laughable as worshipping a chronometer – and the vile greenskins, who had had the obtusity to causing his master a wound to the chest. Fortunately the great father had protected his master, and they had won the confrontation, as the cowardly greenskins retreated, but just barely.

He entered the chamber and looked around, quietly admiring the transformation it had undergone in just the few weeks since they had made it their base; moss, fungal growths and beautiful little algae-like creatures covered the walls and floor, and the metal bulkheads and pipes were rapidly corroding. But the scent… Even through his rebreather mask, which he was unfortunately forced to wear, since he was not quite ready for such a plethora of blessings from the father, he was savouring the smell of a thousand plagues, poxes and the exquisite taste of rot emanating from the throne played with his taste buds.

A rusty voice, grating and bubbling with mucuos roared quietly through the chamber;
”What news have you for me, maggot?”
Abominus sat on this throne, in splendid bone white and emerald terminator plate, larger than any space marine Ichabod had ever seen. As Abominus spoke, he slowly rose, breaking loose from the throne, unbelievably already bonded to it with small spore growths and barnacles. Blood, slime and oily grime covered his white plate, and he creaked and cracked as his joints came loose from the throne. The carrion bird, that for unknown reasons constantly followed his master, sat on his left shoulder, picking away at the eyeball of one of his masters trophies. Eerie green light shone in his masters eyes, and they grew brighter as he stood up in full height, almost a full 3 metros tall. He looked down on his servant, tilting his head a little to the side, as a child intrigued by a new plaything.

Ichabod sunk, and spoke:
”Great lord, though the blessid ones have tried, but failed. Many of the intruders have managed to grab the comm interceptors, and the scans show that they are about to leave the depths. My deepest apologies for this failure, my lord – I take full responsibility, and leave my fate in your hands, should you choose to send me to the great fathers gardens.”

A grating sound emanated through the room – a horrible, creaking sound, like bones breaking combined with the sound a man makes when he vomits. The sound grew in volume, and suddenly Ichabod realized that the sound was his master laughing.

”Little maggot”, Abominus spoke; ”First of all – I don’t need your permission to take your fate in my hands. You are but a speck of dust, an atom on a planet compared to me. I end you whenever I want to. However, I see the great father’s taken a liking to you, and you do amuse me so, with your bowing and scraping. ”

”Secondly, little maggot… The comm interceptors were never the true objective of this little ruse – the objective was to get the intruders down here to the depths. I’ve ordered my Plague Marines to rig the escape shafts with explosives, which I’ve just voxed them to detonate. There is only one way out now, through the tunnels. It is time they meet the Tunnel Dweller, most blessid of Nergals creatures. ”

The sound of explosions rang throughout the structure, causing Ichabod to flinch, but he held tall and proud. He cried behind his rebreather mask – not only would he live to serve his master another day, he had not failed – the great father would be proud, and perhaps even bless him with a gift. As he made a gesture to leave, Abominus grating voice spoke once more:

”And little maggot – do try to goad the Dark Eldar intruders into falling into a confrontation with us. The witch-queen and I have a score to settle.”

Thanks!

I've decided to add a couple of Plaguebearers to my Kill Team, to replace one of the units of cultists - mostly because cultists are very cheap and good in this format, and because I wanted to turn down the power level a bit.

However, after having a long hard look at the standard plastic plaguebearers, I decided that they were too goofy, small and non-threatening for my little Kill Team, so I went to my local GW, looked at the shelves, and let my imagination fly. I ended up bringing home a box of crypt horrors, which I've spent most of last night cutting up and throwing green stuff onto. They're still WIP, I need to think about what to do with the swords, perhaps some intestines hanging from their bellies, and maybe a single eye - I am, however, very partial to the idea of blind daemons.

Anyway, here the two guys are:

I also wanted to show you guys the NPC monster for the next mission in our Kill Team campaign - the Tunnel Dweller.

So you're finally painting that massive beast! Good to see, it's a fantastic creation.

For the Plaguebearers you definitely need to make them more Nurgle-y. Adding distended bellies/hanging intestines, pustules, and pockmarked skin would be good. You should give them an eye/eyes, as although blind daemons are cool, it's something that fits Slaanesh or Tzeentch more than Nurgle.

Really did the Plaguebeares so far, can you please take a picture next to the Cultists and Marines?

But that creature... it's utterly horrifiying...ly awesome!

I love how this is really a completly different beast from most Chaos Spawns or other GW models and yet I can clearly see where the parts come from. That claw is from the Hellpit Abomination, isn't it? Those arms with the stitches certainly are.

Maybe, instead of the traditional 'distended bloated corpse' look, you could research and take cues from wasting diseases instead? Things like high fevers or non-tumourous cancers that sap away the strength and dessicate the body, instead of filling it with puss and bilous fluids.

Going with the 'fever' idea, you could even see about putting on some sort of 'heat sensor' flaps like Wildmutt or Stage-2 Graboids have, or viper-pits.

Gotta agree, non-bloated Plaguebearers would look awesome.

Here's a few ideas:

1: Use a drill and pock-mark their skin with craters, ranging in depth from mere dimples to full-on holes, as though some foul parasites were burrowing into their flesh.

2: Give them a scabrous, dry-skinned, leprous look., maybe aided with texture paint or crackle paint. A bit like this (NSFW/L: Disease pics)
Spoiler:

3: Draw some inspiration from horror extraordinaire and former dental technician Junji Ito (NSFW/L/S: there is no going back once you go down the rabbit hole...)

Hi guys - and thanks for the confidence.

I've been busy with real life, playing music, and flirting a bit with Warmachine/Hordes - which I can't quite figure out if I really like, or am incredibly frustrated with. At the moment I'm mostly leaning towards the latter. I just don't feel I have the spare time to get good at a game that's so complicated, and I would rather spend most of my time modelling and painting, not vice versa.

Anyway, I have been eyeeing the models, trust me. I WILL get a plague lord, at some point, and do bad things to it - probably a Plague Knight kit as well, seing as the parts are incredibly cool - how cool is it, that they've done a Adrian Smith Nurgle Lord head (the iconic black/white one) ?

Right now, a small Dark Mechanicus kill team is at the drawing board - I think I've finally cracked the problem with how to do data daemons. Hopefully some updates in the coming few weeks.

Well... It was more than a few weeks.

As you undoubtedly know, I'm a bit of a hobby butterfly; I flutter between projects, and doing whatever takes my fancy. I have been on and off a little bit in the past year, but I haven't been completely idle.

I've managed to do several projects;

I've gotten my Warmachine stuff done and painted. However, I'm growing increasingly frustrated with Privateer Press; I rently got the new Ruin character jack; I recently recieved it, and I am appalled by the quality, or lack thereof. The details are practically nonexistent, the fur on his shoulder is almost flat, and theres almost no sharp edges anywhere to be found. And it's not just a bad cast either - another member of my local gaming club got one too, and it has the same problems.

This, combined with the fact that I've been annoyed with the lack of quality and details before (having to paint edges and details on is frustrating) means that I've decided to put my money where my mouth is, and quit Warmachine. Not that I've played a lot, but I think their miniatures plain suck, and are way too expensive for having such lousy quality. Ruin is a 65$ miniature. When I see how the great quality I get from GW, Wyrd/Malifaux or other manufacturers for that kind of cash, I see no reason whatsoever to support Privateer Press - I feel like they're screwing their customers over.No offense intended to anyone who likes WM/H - I think it's a pretty good game, but being a hobbyist first and foremost, they're not giving me value for my money.

So yes - goodbye to Warmachine. With these I bid it farewell:

Soon after that, I started a project with one of my buddies from my blog, Bitter Old Painters - we wanted to fool around with some of the new Mechanicus. However, it turned out a bit shortlived, since none of us were really inspired. We did however manage to paint a few models, and they turned out pretty nice. It was a fun challenge to try and replicate each others techniques, so the models have a uniform look:

Though shortlived, the project showed me that I'm ready to paint red again. And what better way to celebrate, than by starting a new chaos army? Many years ago, when I first became a follower of the chaos gods, I found the Word Bearers really boring; however, in recent years, and no doubt in part caused by the awesome Word Bearers omnibus, they're my favourite legion; They're flying rodent gak crazy, totally fanatical, and utterly, utterly evil. I want Word Bearers, and I WILL have them!

It will however be a slow project, since I want it done right - I want them to be the best army I've ever done, so I want to be patient and choose the right model - which means waiting out for new Chaos Space Marines, which will hopefully come out in the coming months, according to rumours. Anyway, I've made a crazy over-the-top-land-raider-rolling-altar, shown here:

And the start of a possessed lord:

The army will also have Gal Vorbak (because they're amazing models), and will recycle some of my old Daemon Engines from my Dark Mechanicus army - particularly the bikes, biker lord, Forgefiend and few others. Stay tuned.

However, what brought me here, is Age of Sigmar; I love skirmish wargaming, since it allows me to lavish more over single models, and the project is much more managable, seeing it is relatively few models. I always liked the fantasy setting, but broke my back 20 years ago on painting 100+ models, just to play. Plus I hate ranks and movement trays. Thus, AoS was right up my alley. Of course it had to be Nurgle, since they recently got such amazing models.

My warband will consist of a Lord on demonic mount, a heavily converted Maggoth lord (2 heads, 4 arms), an ENORMOUS nurgle giant, 3 chaos trolls, and these:

I have most of the stuff built, ready to put paint on, and I've been playing some games, and having great fun - the game really is much more than meets the eye. It FEELS good, and makes it easy to tell a great story, as opposed to my past experience with fantasy, which was always about rule discussions.

Whew... What a wall of text. Thanks for reading, please comment (I always appreciate your comments ), and check back soon for updates.

Also- Age of Sigmar- do the rules updates for it support Dwarves and Tomb Kings properly? Because I've always wanted to get into Fantasy, but, well, the local club hasn't really been a Fantasy scene- I'm thinking getting some small skirmish games would be easier to do.

Anvildude wrote:

Dwarfs and Tomb Kings are both quite strong in AOS. The Stunties are as expected - war machines + shooting + synergy-boosted infantry in a game about shooting + synergy boosts - but the TK have really just turned it on in general. Between units auto-replenishing from their banners, lots of magic support, plenty of shooting, choppy heroes and stupidly strong sphinxes, I've seen TK rampage through several larger events already. Also helps that they're Awesome & Cool Looking

It definitely is. Actually, I'm so impressed by the kit, that I wrote a review for it:

The parts come from The Dark Works, a small one man business run by the delightful canadian gentleman known as Peter Lindblad:http://thedarkworks.bigcartel.com/" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> http://thedarkworks.bigcartel.com/

He started out on the Bolter and Chainsword forums, with his Black Legion project, lamenting the lack of chaos-specific parts and bits for the Rhino, Predator and Land Raider - something to make it more cool than just "another spiky rhino". Over the course of the last 4 years or so, what started out with him making amazingly tight and precise armour and trims out of plastic card, leaving the rest of us drooling over the looks, has evolved into him making a small business out of it, taking 3d modelling classes, investing in computerguided plastic cutters, and becoming a genuine savant in resin casting. Very impressive, if only for his drive and determination - seldom have I seen anyone so dedicated to his craft.

Check out his thread here - it makes for a great read, lots of tips, where he happily shares all his knowledge and it shows how much he's constantly improving his skills: Legion Rising

Anyway; When he first started offering the Chaos Land Raider trim/armour kit, I was drooling over it - finally a kit that made a Land Raider look all proper and "chaosy" - I had no use for it at the moment thought, having recently finished my Death Guard Land Raider (without trims, alas), so I put the idea on the back burner. However having recently started my Word Bearers, there was no doubt that I wanted, nay, NEEDED a set of his kit. Which brings me to my review;

Customer service/delivery: 10/10. I ordered the kit late sunday evening, and it arrived by thursday noon. Reminding you that the kit crossed the planet, flying from Canada to Denmark, Scandinavia, I don't think it can be done much faster. He also gave a very thorough response to my email with some questions, within 24 hours. Very satisfied.

Packaging: 10/10
. The parts arrived safely packed in small plastic bags, inside the box, and most impressively, a personalised letter from Peter, thanking for the business. Nice touch.

Quality of parts/casting: 11/10 (Yes, these go to eleven!). This is where I just can't fathom how he does it.

1) This kit is done before he got his hands on the computer guided cutter. The master for the kit is HAND CUT from plastic card. Yes, hand cut. I've gone through it very thoroughly, and I just can't find a single line or rivet that isn't exactly where it needs to be. Intricate fine lines all around, and I am a stickler for anything crooked. Flabbergastingly good. I think of myself as pretty good with a scalpel and modelling, but this is beyond anything I think I could do.

2) The casts are practically flawless. I've managed to find a total of 1(!) air bubble in the resin in about 25 parts he sent. I've worked with a LOT of Forge World parts; I love most of their models, but sometimes I want to ragequit them because of the quality of their casts - air bubbles, misaligned molds causing extreme mold lines, and totally warped parts. Every part Peter sent was straight as an arrow. This is vastly superior to anything Forge World has ever sent me.

Anyone whos worked with resin casting, know that it isn't easy to get great casts. It's a testament to his perfectionism how good this really is.

3) Fit; Okay, lets be honest; the Land Raider kit is OLD, and in no way lives up to GWs standards today - it just doesnt fit together very good - I had to cram it together with rubber bands, and put heavy books on it while gluing it, to bend some of the parts into shape. That being said, it's all the more impressive that Peters parts fit the Land Raider like a glove - practically no modification, bar the necessary removal of a few rivets and extruding details on the Land Raider is necessary. Brilliantly thought out and executed kit.

Price: Well... It's not a cheap kit by any means. It costs 46 Canadian $ (about 37 US $) for the armour plates. While some may baulk at the price, I think it's worth it and more. I'm into modelling and wargaming because I like the illusion of small warriors battling it out - therefore, quality is a the top of my list. Could I make a Chaos Land Raider without these parts? Sure. Do I want to? Nope, not when I see how much better it makes it look.

I can't see Forge World making a similar kit at a cheaper price, and when you keep in mind that this guy has invested in a computer guided cutter, resin casting tools (vaccum chamber, etc.) and put so much time and effort into this small business, and that the quality is superior to Forge World, the kit is actually a bargain.

Overall: I heartedly recommend this kit to anyone who wants the best they can get. It's just that good. I can't imagine his other kits being any different, so I'll recommend those as well. A big tip of my hat to Peter - I don't get how you do it, but consider me a huge fan.
