I discovered during the painting of this mini a couple of things:
1) I need to have a wet tray for the paint (I knew It already doing my Orkz, but all the freehand I did on this figure was much harder with the paint getting dry)
2) Space Marines are a lot smaller 3) It's good to change a bit from the main project/color scheme sometimes
4) Yellow is a color
Now I'll be back with the Krazy Pak, waiting for an other little contest to push my game further, I really enjoyed this project
Just to let You know that I'm not quitting again , here the progress on the armor of the last two Nobz I have basecoated (missing one, but finished the spray )
Sorry to disappoint a couple of You ladz, but the hat is already painted in the boring grey of the uniform .
I guess It is the best for the overall effect of the mini as I'm nearly the end of the painting process (I now have a couple of days of freedom in which I'm planning to finish them )
On an other note, after a lot of marble effects going around I decided to try something different and had a go, this is my attempt to do marble effects on plasticard for basing.
The first four triangles are just a try to see if the method would work and color testers as well, the last one is the marble that i like the most, with proper lines of different color.
Also, I think I have to give It a coat of clear gloss paint....
Let me know what do You think please
A little request off You followers of Da Krazy Pak
Spoiler:
This is, for me at least, my best miniature ever and I would like to get the last vote to see what people think about It.
So, please, vote It if You didn't do It yet, That would be a a great gift for me
Was just a "need" I had to get the last vote on that mini and You deliver straight away
On the workbench is the final try for the marble basing waiting for the beginning of a new army to arrive at my place: Slaanesh Chaos Space Marine When I'll start It I'll open a proper thread for It.
It will be just for the fun of painting them and to keep myself interested changing between Da Krazy Pak and the little new army (I'll never leave alone my Orkz, but I feel the urge to paint something else )

Big Mak "Bark'n'Laud" It's primed and tonight will start the painting process, I undercoated It with Ogre Flash 'cause my black primer It's finished, first mini with that...
let's hope for the best
Plus I prepared the bases for all my Nobz with slates and sand, those too will have a coat of color soon
Maybe one day I'll build one, It sounds really cool and in line with my army (plus It will be such a great converting project that I can't refuse )
Done, I'll make one and welcome to "Da Krazy Pak" Johnnyhorse
Edit: Little thought.
I noticed that I'm subscribed only to P&M blogs mostly, probably because is the part of the hobby that I'm in the possibility to do or that I love the most.
After a saturday night of hard work and a couple of fresh beers with the coworkers I came home and started to post on dakka (like I do every night )
There is my name as last poster in a lot of thread now and here is my thought:
How is possible for a big community as this one to not post in the P&M section more than any other in the forum?
This is the core of It all for me, this is where with the community You share your ideas, suggestion, compliments. etc.
It's the section that makes a community that loves something (It can be everything, from wargames to fly fishing).
Sharing is caring... at leat for me
If you go by Message Totals in the forum list it appears that the "P&M Blogs" are quite nearly at the top. Almost exactly equal to the "general Painting and Modelling" and just under "40k General Discussion".
I'm willing to bet people are just scared to jump into threads that are, for the most part, personal. There's a lot of back and forth between hobbyists, and maybe other gamers feel either excluded, or unable to contribute? I don't know -- I'm only just recently really jumping into the community. All I have to say is that hobbyists love to hear from everyone, even if you just want to say "cool".
PS. Thank you for the welcome! I have no idea what entails membership into Da Krazy Pak, but I'll run with it
I see your point on the "hobby people" and the personal approach.
It was just a thing that came to my attention here on dakka tonight, nothing bothering me at all, but just a kind of question for people that visit this thread I think that if my work and place would permit me to play i would visit other section of the forum as well, but at the same time the P&M section would be my main focus.
Da Krazy Pak is a big family, if You're part of It You just are part of It, that's the pro

I think for most of us, collecting is as much a par tof the hobby as gaming. And since tournaments usually require painted armies, everyine is required to paint . Of all the guys (and gals) who play this game, I only knwo of a few that don't paint or only the required 3-colour minimum. There are quite a few of us who are just modellers however, an don't care about gaming. Hence, p&m logs will have the most candidates I think. Not to mention that it's a great motivator to have people replying and sharing their thoughts on something YOU created. I know I'm more motivated to model/paint when getting lots of replies in my thread, and I assume ut helps for a lot of us. I've also written batreps, and the 'return' when counted in replies is just less when compared to the time you put into it. So, p&m wins out - again

I had a similar conversation on my blog a while back (more to do with lurking, but...).
I think (as someone who has 92% of my posts in P&M) that for every 1 person here on DDakka that is a modeller primarily, there's another who is primarily a gamer and another who mostly cares about the stories and background.
DDakka gives somewhere for each of these people AND for the many other who are in the grey area between these extremes.
Also, within the P&M blogs, there can be a lot of lurking for many reasons (some people may just like looking at the pretties, some may be intimidated by a blog full of awesome and not feel that they are worthy of contributing) and this doesn't raise the post count. Whereas in the rules threads, the people that frequent those are more likely to have an opinion on what is being discussed and you get many posts (seemingly going backwards and forwards) that can make it appear more popular than it really is in relation to P&M...for example.
But I have found that most of the P&M blog owners are very welcoming of anyone's opinions and ideas and I'm trying to lurk less, but I only really post if I have something to say (it can feel a little odd being the 20th person to say "cool", it's been said, I'll wait until I have a contribution...).
Sharing ideas and techniques is where it's at. I've learnt a lot from DDakka to help my modelling and I hope, in turn, I've given something back.
So, keep doing what you're doing, I am watching and I'll say something when I have something to contribute.
You know guys, I probably don't understand how is the gaming community outside Dakkadakka (just because, as I said, I don't have the possibility to join It )
Your comments and consideration CK and Dr. H are more than welcome and I'll use them when something else on this subject will jump at my attention
(CK: I wrote that yesterday night after work and a couple of pints of Chouffe Beer , You know what that means? )
Anyway, Some other asked to see how the Big Mek is going and You shall get It
I'm planning to do the extremity of the KFF and the chain in the middle of the two electric blue, almost white and I have a question for You:
OSL or not OSL from that?
Suggestions, comments and critiques are always welcome
SelvaggioSaky wrote: You know guys, I probably don't understand how is the gaming community outside Dakkadakka (just because, as I said, I don't have the possibility to join It )
DDakka is my only link to modellers as well. I know no-one IRL who is even remotely interested in modelling, let alone little toy soldiers...from far in the future...fighting aliens and robots and daemons...
OSL or not OSL from that?
He's looking good so far. It is a good opportunity to do OSL. Depends on how confident you are of doing it...
Personally I fall into the modeller aspect of the gaming world, never been a player (or not since I was a small child ) so my interest aims towards the threads of painting and modelling and model production.
I have of late been drawn into the fluff aspects, although more for an insight to backgrounds and technologies this way giving better scope for converting and paint schemes.
However I also find that gaming rules can restrict imagination and creativity, this is why I have a lack of interest in this side of the game also the constant complaints towards unbalanced rules.
I have also dropped into a few general discussion threads and have found it can be awkward and hostile at times with responses, I tend to steer from these now as it can ruin the Dakka experience.
I also find the personal threads inspiring and helpful, along with this I find mostly a great community of liked minded individuals sharing ideas and humour.
Now to the Mek great work so far love the apron, great work on the orange once again the scratches look great.
Another thing to consider Selv, is that one provocative comment in one of the other sections of dakka can generate 10 pages worth of argumentative posts overnight. How hard do you have to work to generate 10 pages of posts??

Yeah, good points.
I always try and learn as much about the background of the model's race/species and their technology before I start building for this exact reason.
And yeah, I don't worry about making a legal model as far as the game rules go...

I hate it when your on thread and someone has put their heart and soul into creating a master piece, only for someone to say " thats not game legal "
I know they are only voicing a true opinion but it does wind me up, I have created loads of none legal models (yes hard to believe I know ) and could not care less if it was or not game legal.
Interesting to read your point of view on the issue.
There is always new things to learn about the people that post, even if It's a bit difficult to do It on a forum, without the voices and expressions to give You the mood of the person that is writing.
Thanks for the replays guys!
That mek is looking sweet. As for me on DDakka is only place where i can see other models that not created to the instructions, have free range of motion and paint.
The good painters in my click - stick to a book scheme, and dont convert heavily.
The good modelers who convert - never paint
The gamers - never paint, never convert.
I sadly am torn into many different aspects of this hobby, which limits my skills in the end.
I love to paint, but most of my army is grey or black.
I love to model, but my conversions are not as far out there as they could be.
I love to game, don't get to often, but once a week isn't bad.
That is looking really nice, Sel! I love all the little details, like the rag wrapped arpind the thunder hammer's power cord. That is a really nice toich. Looking forward to see what comes of that frosted blue on the power coils and chain.
Yellowbeard, I wanted to try OSL, but changing my mind and going on the pulsing electricity I'm not going to do It. The light would come from so many places that It would be a bluish/white miniature at the end.
LDD: the skin has to be washed again.
If You need I can tell exactly how I did the effect on the KFF.
For the googles I was thinking a light purple grey color....

I can see what you did thanks mate I just prefer it to OSL that can drown out a miniature sometimes, great suff and looking forward to the purple grey glass
Big Mek Bark'n'Laud is called in this manner for the very high noise He does while working.
He was the former Warboss of da Klan, before Mohyz killed the dreadnought of the Space Wolfs.
He's the creator of beautiful killing machines, like Da Toll One or Smashing Pumpkan, the one that will repair the bike of Krash and the one working on the Deff Dread at the moment... plus a couple of 'alf truks and a Battlewagon on the way.
Hope You enjoy the final product, I had a blast converting (more than a year ago now ) and paint him.
Voting is very welcome (even if You don't like It)

Good heavens Selv, how did I miss commenting on this? (and I did vote, you should have a score now)
I absolutely love the modifications you've made to the KFF. The little electrical wiring loopy bits connected by the chain are fantastic. The fact you painted hazard stripes on a cable is nothing short of completely bonkers. I wouldn't have made the choice to put the light blue corrosion on the bits, but I would have been wrong. It looks fantastic! And unlike mine... your ork skin is really bleedin' good. That's a winner all-round my friend!
Thank You Git and Squidbot.
Git, I've seen the last Mekboy You did and the skin is not bad at all
I'm in a moment, miniaturewise, that I feel the urge to do something different, I painted and built orks all my 40K life and now I may burn out, so I started something new, this is giving me an opportunity to test myself in a totally new adventure.
@ Shasolenzabi : Thanks a lot and welcome to Da Krazy Pak
Here some more work done on the Deff Dred, cockpit/Cabin done with engine and exhausts.
Tomorrow I'll start to tackle the tracks that bring this beast around.
I don't know yet exactly what I'll be using, but I think that some wheels from the SM bikes and plasticard will be two components, let's see how I'll manage that.
It depends on a few things. The first thing that comes to mind is the relative sizes of the arms and the body. As they are ccw, they will need to be able to reach beyond the front of the dred and most of the way to the ground (again that's practical thinking on my part, I can't help it).
The obvious attachment point that I can see is the round (I assume the hinge point for the battle wagon jaw thing that it appears to be made of) part just above the tracks. This is where I started thinking about how long the arms are, if attached there can they reach to attack something in front of the dred and can they reach over the tracks to something at the side?
You could always build a box or scaffold-like structure out over the tracks from there, to attach the arms to if they need to be wider...
I can also see a square indentation just above that point that would make a nice attachment point as well, either for support struts for the arms below or for attachment for the other pair of arms (that I believe this should get) which will hold the ranged weapons that do not need to be close to the ground...
Just some ideas that grabbed me immediately, feel free to ignore any or all of them.
This is an interesting little creation indeed looks like the grots have been routing through the Mechs bits and boy did they have fun.
I was trying to figure out the track wheel set up (when you mentioned it ) for some reason I never considered a triangle formation which in turn looks pretty cool.
How are you intending to detail it further though ? Will you be adding between the tires or on top, I only ask as I cant see much room between the tires for detailing or at least without over crowding.
Maybe some drive belts connecting the tires would work, either way looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
I see Dr H concerns as to placing of your CCW, the issue you have here is anything with claws, saws, pincer ect are going to have to be on the lower section of the model.
This means everything else as to projectile weapons need to be placed at the higher points of the model, this obviously is to create a balanced model and make sense of the armoury and placement.
However I am sure you have considered all this before hand, I just have concerns that the model could end up looking bottom heavy which also would alter the overall look so far.
As to the mounting area on the model I am a little lost as to where ? I think your work is great and I normally have a good idea of your direction, but to be honest this time I am struggling a little as to your final look.
Secondly, not sure you will like it but I would be tempted to go with the CCW high, coming over the top, like servitor arms. Kinda like the mega gargant of old epic. But I like cluttered, and crazy look.
Thanks for the replays and compliments (also the ones for the Mek GiraffeX).
I like the idea of Cam actually and that was already in my mind for a while, but an other spot is the gap there is between the tracks ant the front....
need to take a look of It tomorrow.
Thanks again and keep give suggestion guys, I really appreciate It and, of course, I need them
@ Meatshield: thanks! No way I'm going for easy stuff
@ Awesomesauce: thanks as well, the CCW are my favorite bits actually, a lot of effort and went into them
Now...
I checked the possibility You suggested and then I decided to raise the main body a couple of cm to be able to put the CCW coming out between the tracks ad the front.
After that I started the belt drive fabrication, i need a lot of weight on the tracks to keep the beast balanced The main body will be bent a bit further, It's just a dry fit atm.
Loving the raised body of this build just don't make the arms too thin or it will begin to look too much like Wall-e.
Great ain't job on the kustom force field by the way. I've taken a little breather from looking into all the pages, now I have to catch back up to all the threads.
Cam and Panda: thanks guys, next contest will be great, already two orkz In It
LDD: I actually thought about a front wheel, but You said It, It looks cool this way (great minds think alike and all that stuff ).
I'm picturing this beast still in line when the battle begins and then straight to the enemy, if It stops It falls on his face... so It doesn't stop
Dr. H: thanks mate, I see that bellywheel is on the run
Theo: thanks as well, both for the compliments on the Mek and the liking of the Deff.
Unfortunally It has been already nicknamed ORK-E, I think I will run with that
Going now to do the other, slightly different, chain belt and to finish the contact tube between main body and traks, updates in a couple of days I think (work is a )
I said to myself that I don't really care about balance 'cause It will be attached to the base
Here the progress on ORK-E AKA: Buldoza.
Hope to get the final details (GS, riveting, a lot of rivets and some more rivets ) before the end of the WE, but first the two shooty bitz (I'm going to use the Deff Dread weapons for that)
The lower part, tracks, CCW harm attachments and suspension.
And then the Mockup with the main body and a little passenger
Now that We all agree that I'm nut, crazy, mad, off my rocker, etc. (I never said the opposite ), I went with It and decided that the normal weapons of the Deff Dread were not 'enuff.
So I created these Now wish me luck, 'cause after a good coffee I'm going in riveting mode, a lot of It
C&C are always appreciated ladz and thanks for the support
EDIT: Welcome to "Da Krazy Pak" to Graven (the Grot that forgot to say hallo is already squig food )
Thanks guys, I' really pleased to see how the plasticard jobs and kitbashing are going on.
Probably It's because I left those for painting for a while and recharged my batteries Rivets have been postponed to the end of Italy game in the Confederation Cup, but will be done beforw I go to bed
I will take the paintjob of the Dread to get the experience and then tackle the 'alftruk.
Hey, looks Who decided to give a shout... Vik is here, You're very welcome and thanks for the compliments
FireDrake, with your painting skills I think You should start to cut and glue your orkz as they were mine, 'cause You can create amazing things with the brush Hope You enjoy "Da Krazy Pak"
I've been watching his build with awe, between here and the competition thread, I can't wait to see him all painted up. I know quite a few people hav already made the comment, but the gun emplacement is killer in more ways than one .
Undercoated in the afternoon (got the primers and straight to spray It ), Buldoza will run free in a few days... Happy like a kid (this is about both me and the Deff )
Theo: thanks, but You got to leave the monowheels servoskulls and get painting that great vehicle of yours

I know, but I'm so inspired right now...good thing I'm out of parts to make more....temporarily.
Good luck with ork-e, I dropped out of the competition because I'm way sidetracked and the model isn't working in my army anymore. But ork-e could easily take the prize for coolest thing I've seen in a long time .
I just love it when people make this comment... the implication being that you could f it up at any moment!! (no slight on you Dr H, I just find it funny).

I know what you mean Gits. And I say that far too often. It's meant to be "keep going, I like what you're doing".
It's difficult to know what to say sometimes when you want to say something, that's why I often leave it until I have some input...
Denua wrote:Lookin nice can't wait to see him all weather up and with the finishing touches.
Here for You the weathered version, missing rust and dirt on the tracks.
Welcome to "Da Krazy Pak", hope You enjoy your stay... btw I love your stuff

Just watching in the shadow? Welcome back Bigfish
And now some more orange goodness from Da Krazy Pak, The Glyphs on the front says Buldoza and the one on the left side says ORK-E
You're really channelling the inner Ork through your paintbrush.
Nice weathering and I like how, as you look closer, you suddenly spot a little thing or scrap or arrow painted with checks or dags. Good work.
As I said I'll add some rust and dirt, but not muck (as my klan lives in a black/grey desert planet), on the tracks and the tusks are not even touched from my brushes if not as a mistake
The two little passenger are getting the skin done tonight and I think I'll do the tusks as well, let's see if I'm sleepy or not
Anyway, I think that maximum Sunday, Buldoza will be ready for the comp.
Whew! Just ran through all 26 pages, you sir have been busy. I really dig how original and detailed everything is, you're kans are my favorite, definitely subscribed.
Very nicely executed. It looks like something I wouldn’t want to see rolling towards me. For fear all it's sharp pointy things and....it might fall on me if nothing else.
Thanks for the complement btw, nice to know people see my stuff
I know now that painting a big model like this one is a lot different compared to a Kan or similar, but the result is much more striking i guess Tried to give the horns some realistic coloration and there I have to improve a lot.
As far as the horns go...try adding a few coats of Gryphonne Sepia (or equvalent) at the base of the horn going lighter as you work your way up...only go about 1/2 to 2/3 the way up and it should help out...can add a few dark strips from the base to give it a rougher look to if ya want.
Another thing i noticed...you could add a little black wash on the tips of the gun barrels to add that soot look from firing loads of dakka.
Now I just have to say that that is brilliant, I love it. Absolutely brilliant. The weathering on the paintwork is perfect IMO.
Horns look good, maybe (I am not one to talk) but maybe be a little bravor with the dark side on the horns, take it a little further, but I recon they look ok. And anyways who is to say what colour horns are, they could be old western cowboy ranch style with black tips to them or bright red demonic horns for all we know, so they look cool as is.
This is truly a masterpiece of Orky engineering the paint job is superb and it's the little details that pull it all together . Any o my marines would be proud to die fighting this behemoth.
these projects raise my own appetite for making some orky stuff one day...really stunning work mister... i hope you will have a proud and cold night pleasant dreams
Thank You all guys!
This week there wasn't any progress as the weather is just too hot to be able to paint or convert anything!
I hope that a couple of thunderstorm will pass this way soon or I'm gonna melt.
In case that is not gonna happen and the heat still suck every energy I have left after work (I would like to remember You that I work in a kitchen and that already hot enough), probably I'm not gonna meet the deadline.
Hallo forum, and Yet again I was missing for a while....
some of You might remember that I had a few troubles at work on August, well... Yes, there were.
I took, after the tough season, three weeks of forced vacation and went on the Alps by myself to relax and think about the situation.
When I came back I knew what to do.
I resigned and I'm ready to leave Italy with the new year, destination unknown yet, but I have a few places that I like Probably I will leave the kitchen as well and I'll start to concentrate on a passion that could become a job, photography
In the meantime I'll get back to painting and modeling 'cause from now I have two months of free time... paid
very brave decision... quiting on a job in these grey days... you have some serious tough balls i have to say... that deserves a really good job now! best wishes!
