Thank you, everyone.

Chaplain is finished. Krusus Thran of the Angels of Truth.

And with a couple pals.

"Forward, bothers! Let nothing stand before us, for the Emperor protects the deliverers of His Truth unto the Heretic, the Traitor, and the Alien!"

Dragons, LT, and Hippolyta are done and mid-varnish. Thermal cannon is done and will be mounted soon, maybe tonight. Quick pic of things to come.

Busy, busy. Thanks for looking!

Chaplain looks awesome , so do his pals. Really like how you picked out all those bits and bobs. Have you shown us those marines before or holding out for a big reveal?

YouWaShock's Models 2/22 Monthly Challenge Roundup @ 2019/12/09 02:22:33

Post by: youwashock

Thanks!

The Marines have shown up before, the first way back on page 2. They are from my mostly unpainted Imperial force. Pretty much just for fun and collecting. I think I have...6...Marines painted now counting the Chaplain. I have focus issues sometimes.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thermal cannon online.

Only a few pieces left. Large. But few.

Thanks for looking!

Love the heat effect on the knight's thermal cannon and those freehand flames are ace!

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors

Looking great Sir, I envy your freehand with the flames. It is just the kind of time consuming detail that I can never push myself to achieve.

The finished Chaplain looks great as well, as others have said it is such a great sculpt and your changes have only served to further emphasise that. And that cape? Wow.

Dat Knight he is smoking hot! I said it before, your freehand on the flames looks awesome, the cannons heated metal looks ace too.

I'm curious to see how you're going to go with the Fighting Fungi executioner and Suzy Belle from Dark Age with her absolute lack of sensible clothing.

Your Chaplain is quite the looker!

Wow all those flames look amazing on that knight. The heat effect is really well done, looks real to me.

Not stopped by for a while, then come back to even more awesome! Chaplain came out great, I echo the sentiment on the cape, really well done. Then the knight that just keeps on getting better! She’s going to be stunning when you finish her off! Keep up the good work!

Thank you all, very much. It's great to see a long-term project getting such a positive response.

Highlord, it is high time I painted the fungi Reaper, seeing as how it is my design. I plan to use the art from the book as a rough guide for this one. Should I ever paint my other copies I will branch out, though.

Aestas, no house. Both of my Knights are Freeblades. The first is the last survivor of his former house who follows my Marines around looking to get into fights. They tolerate him because he is good to have around in a pinch and is a loyal servant of the Emperor. The WiP Knight is a man of mystery/ghost Knight who shows up where he's needed and then disappears, LotD style.

Almost done basing finished models. Other stuff in progress. More pics soon. Thanks again for the comments!

I haven't checked in here for a while, lovely updates. I especially like the cloak on the chaplain, well done.

Post by: youwashock

Thanks, Flapjack!

Well, they're done. After starting them some time between 2nd and 3rd edition, this squad of Dragons is painted.

Also finished up a couple random ladies. First, Hippolyta from Mythic Battles: Pantheon. I bought in on Conan, so I already had my fill of Monolith plastic when MB: P came along. A friend liked the theme and bought in. Turns out there are some neat sculpts there, so I eventually picked up a couple of my favorites on eBay. Color scheme inspired by Teela.

Mostly Contrast. Sort of successful. Little dodgy, really. This is one of those, "it's painted" situations.

Also painted up a classic Confrontation model. Loved those guys. Laureena Tillius, the Red Lioness of Alahan.

Their design aesthetic wasn't for everyone, but I was a big fan of their models. Mostly Contrast here, too, but more prep before applying. Hit the armor with a little gloss at the end for what hopefully gives a lacquered look.

Thanks for looking!

Loving those eldar, really old school! Ladies are looking good, did you thin the contrast paint with the medium or how did you apply it *takingoutnotebook*?

YouWaShock's Models 2/22 Monthly Challenge Roundup @ 2019/12/13 20:36:08

Post by: youwashock

Thanks, guys! Steal away, Yorkright!

Viterbi, I didn't thin any of the Contrast. On Hippolyta I used A. White, Iyanden Yellow, Snakebite Leather, and Darkoath Flesh. I hit the white areas with some highlights after Contrast, the gold was silver washed with Druchi Violet then hit with the Contrast yellow. Her hair was straight Snakebite washed with old Chestnut ink and highlighted just a little with a Vallejo skin color. Tanned, I think. Her skin is just Darkoath Flesh over white.

Lioness used Contrast on the skin, armor, and hair. You can look back and see some of the prep work/preshading in earlier posts, but the skin was Gulliman Flesh, the hair was Snakebite washed with Chestnut again after some highlighting, but with more highlights using flesh, bone, and a light yellow after the ink. The armor was silver (AP Plate Mail Metal) washed with Druchii Violet then hit with Iyanden. After that I went back with Blood Angels Red over most of the armor, leaving some details and the filligree in gold.

Those yellow Fire Dragons with the dark red helmets look really nice. Great color scheme and well executed. Everything looks top notch, but the flame effects on the knight are another highlight for me.

Never was a fan of the confrontation miniatures style, though the Wolfen have grown on me since CMoN have used the style. Your Lioness I should great, really shows me that maybe some of the sculpts were held back by the painting.

Great that you have finally gotten the Fire Dragons done, wrong faction I know but for them it truly has been "The Long War". Really like the alternative colour scheme on them as well, the helmets are especially good.

I do not think that "not Teela" looks dodgy at all. Then again we are often our own worst critics.

What up, butt-cheeks? Something a coworker used to say...

Thank you, everybody. LTMW, you're right. We're almost always harder on ourselves. Theo, Rackham's style definitely wasn't to everybody's taste. I love their work, but have met plenty of people who disagree. Wolfen are hard to deny, though.

A quick WiP on the Knight. A big moment, as the double Reaper is a large part of the look for this guy. And it has begun.

Post by: youwashock

Thank you, guys.

Yeah, Yorkright. They are pretty sweet models all around.

The run up to the holiday has left little time for...anything. But here's a little WiP on the Reapers.

And I, for some reason, went a little nuts this season, buying a grip of Reaper models with zero purpose, another spread of elementals, this time from Nolzur's low-priced whatever they call them, and a batch of models from Kingdom Death I would be damned if I missed out on again. No longer do I await the King. I need to pick up the pace. Jumped right in on some stuffy dolls because I love 9. Going to try to knock these out quick, plan to have them all together on a large base.

I hate Reaper. A thousand models I have no reason at all to own. But some of them are still hard to resist. Have you seen the ginormous eagle they came out with? Thankfully I don't yet feel like trying to fit it onto a shelf.

Merry Xmas, all. Or whichever variation you subscribe to. And as always, thanks for looking!

gobert, not NY, sadly. This holiday season has been insane, and despite having time off work I have not made the progress I would have liked to. Still, have some things cooking along. Foe instance, the double reaper is done and in place.

And a quick pic of other things I am currently working on. Hope to get some of these (and the Knight, whose carapace should be in this shot) done soon.

Been a while since I last visited.
Always a joy to come back to this plog! And it seems you have been really busy.

Took a while to browse trough all the pages I've missed, but man was it worth it.
One of my favorites was definitely the sister: her armor and head swap looked really good.
The chaplain was cool too, really liked his cloak. Great effect with the dirt.

Also can't wait to see the knight completed. It looks so darn good already. Been following the progress on it eagerly.

Thank you all, very much.

Merciful Zeus, there's no TIME, man! At least not as much as I'd like. Progress has been made. Owl, Blaine, and the stuffy dolls are done and mid-varnish. Carapace is ready for flames. The finish line feels that much closer. And now a pic completely unrelated to any of that.

Now the fun of matching the first side as much as possible.

Work continues. I would like to say I am planning to buy fewer models like others on here (I am, sort of), but the Sisters go up for preorder this weekend. Just a basic squad, please, and I will be good.

Autocannons are looking great. They match close enough to be convincing, but just different enough to show the craftsman’s touch.

Looking forward to the finished Knight.

There are definitley degrees of asymmetry I am willing to accept, so long as the main elements all line up reasonably well. It's why I hacked the power fist intead of the missle launcher. The ML's casing was too different. For a long time I have thought about building this Dread with the quad-o-cannon loadout, but was put off by either the cost of components or hassle of knocking it together myself. And then I saw somebody randomly selling the two autocannon bits I needed and ran with it. Currently plan to magnetise the arms, despite these being the default for display because, looks, so I can use the other weapon options I have in the unlikely event I ever play again. Also makes an interesting modeling project. Cuz I don't have a bunch of those already.

Thanks for the comments!

Those Autocannons match up pretty darn good. Certainly well enough that it will never be noticed by anyone who has not read this blog. And I can here you on the "will I ever really play!" Gave that up for lost some time ago. Model for you, and rule of cool.

I have a slightly different goal to the not buy option people are into, mine is not allowed to scratch build anything until my backlog of models are painted. Except commission work, cus well, trying to get that going.

Thanks, Cam!

Not a lot of progress. Son's bday weekend. Have a quick pic of the latest loss in the battle to buy less. An exciting eBay find (for me). Hybrid from Cell Entertainment. Found this guy and a couple more 1999 minis at the end of December. Neat game idea with a really clunky set of rules. Nostalgia buy as much as anything else. Seller shipped late so included a batch of Wrath of Kings Wolfen as compensation. Cool. A fortuitous event, as I have grip of these sitting around already. Also pre-ordered that box of Sisters from the FLGS. Probably build a small squad of regs and a squad of Dominions led by Noctis.

Hope to finish the bases on what's done and work on the Knight a little later today.

Thanks for looking!

Not familiar with Hybrid, then again if it’s 199x vintage I was at most 6 and that box looks like it’s for a T or M rated game!

Hopefully we get to see what you do with some Confrontation-esque Wolfen sooner rather than later.

Those autocannons are looking sweet! One small detail I noticed is the direction of the ports on the muzzle break. They would be venting into each other rather than to the sides. Super minor but thought I'd share. Look forward to seeing them painted up!

The autocannon conversion looks neat!

It's really hard to fight the urge to buy new models. Especially if there is some sort of nostalgia related to them.

Also, can't wait to see what you can cook up with the new sisters you have pre-ordered!
I'm really feeling the need to grab a box or two of them, even though I should not add to my pile of shame. Maybe just a small kill team...

Post by: youwashock

Thank you, all!

After longer than I had anticipated, the first models of 2020 are complete. First off, Blaine from Dreadball, who will serve as head coach of the LexxCorp Kryptonites, Yowtja Plokoon.

And with the team.

Next, the Owlbear from BONES I. A long time coming for not a whole lot of return on this guy. I liked the concept of a sleeker, more animated Owlbear at the time, but the model was one of those "I fall down" guys from early BONES and after engineering a fix and base-coating I decided I hated this goony bird. I have since gotten over it, and now he sits in the menagerie of never-to-be-used fantasy monsters.

Finally, the Stuffy Dolls. In my mind, these are nursery guardians for wizard families, conjured into life to protect children against the various goblins, bogarts, boogey-men, and kinder-catches that threaten the young. But what happens when the children are grown? Maybe some just wind down, maybe they are destroyed, or maybe they strike out in search of adventure. These guys have done just that. Crowbar's cover of No Quarter was playing in my head the whole time I worked on the base.

Mmmmmm...BONES mold lines, how I adore your magnified glory. Eh. They were never going to win any awards anyway.

Work progresses.

Centurius the Puppet indicates that work on the Knight is going well. Started the shoulders, too. Not long, I hope.

2020 minis completed: 5

(figure if I keep a running total, I don't need to try to figure it out later. going to try to track progress this year. thanks a lot, Nev, et al.)

Thanks for looking!

Great work all round YWS. Adore the Stuffy Dolls, some really characterful minis there and they look totally the right texture and colour.

I really like the marks on Blaine's skin, just a cool addition to make the mini pop more. The Owlbear...the Owlbear...why...but also yes. It is an insane sculpt, but great at the same time. The eyes and beak are spot on.

And those old Space Hulk terminators...why are they lurking?

ListenToMeWarriors, I know, right? Asked myself that several times while painting the blasted thing. And yes, OG Space Hulk Terminators. Waiting to be painted when the urge to paint up some more old Space Hulk hits. Someday.

Post by: youwashock

Thank you!

Arakasi, nope. That's just where it landed. These transfers did not go on well, at all. Not sure what the deal was, but they took forever to lift off, and when they did, they took little chunks of the backer with them. So I was getting them into position and chasing little blue bits off the model at the same time. Add wrinkling in and I was glad to have it on mostly straight.

OOoh those stuff dolls are proper creepy looking. I don't want them anywhere near me.

The Knight is tops! The flames came out so damn good. Any idea how much time you put into them in total? My only thing with the knight is that the red porthole on top looks a little flat, but i'm assuming it's not done yet.

Thank you, guys!

ListenToMeWarriors, yes. He's the latest addition to, but the first painted from, my small pile of Nolzur's/Wizkids Deep Cuts figures. I am currently not terribly impressed with their performance. They are obviously looking to eat a slice of BONES' market pie, and share similar characteristics such as nifty mold lines and somewhat bendy plastic. Add a lame primer on top and you have another line of cheap, mostly usable figures that get better the bigger the model is. I have not purchased, nor would I recommend the human sized models for anything other than RPG players looking for an inexpensive option.

Snrub, the porthole is done barring a layer of gloss to add a glassiness to it. I thought painting it more would either blend in with the fire if I went orange, or read as more gemlike if I started desaturating it. I didn't want it too bright, for sure. I got to this point and decided to let it be.

That makes sense. A coat of gloss will likely do the job nicely.

Wait no longer, Cap'n.

Strohm Galvorn sat alert in his command throne. The battle was going well enough. The Veritas Rex had sustained no damage, and casualties on their side were nothing beyond what they had expected. The renegades that had overthrown the Imperial governor on this planet had fallen back to the capital city, and now they were cornered. He was charged with holding the center with the Militarum forces and what remained of the Ecclesiarchy forces led by Sister Noctis. Their convent had been targeted and fallen early in the fighting that had spread to the far corners of the prime continent. Sensors carried their battle hymns into the cockpit as they exhorted the men to acts of faith and valor. Was The Emperor watching? He hoped so. He had a bad feeling about this. The resistance had been heavy, but something about all this seemed too easy, too convenient. Commander Madox of the Asartes had cautioned against overconfidence, and Galvorn agreed. Alarms sounded about him. Artillery shells incoming. "Shield," he spoke, and the Rex's ion shield cycled to protect not only himself, but the infantry milling about his Knight's feet. "So they have found our range," he mused. Soon, then. The Astartes were set to attack from the flanks in a lightning raid meant to crush the heart of the rebel forces as they concentrated on the front. He breathed a litany of courage. He may not have the Sisters' faith, but he was not a man without belief. For some reason, his thoughts drifted back to his Vigil. That night as he sat in his command throne, the one he sat in now, though the Knight was not his first, he had been afraid. Not of conflict. Not of dying. But of failing. Not himself, he was a capable enough warrior even then to acquit himself in battle even at the cost of his own life, but of failing his family. His line. Those who depended upon him for protection. Those who looked to him to lead. He had left those fears behind when he had taken command of his father's Knight, the Veritas Rex, in that last terrible battle. He had left doubt behind. But there were times when he wondered if it had not followed him across the stars, haunting his steps, even as he travelled with the Astartes of he Angels of Truth, lending aid to their quest. Alarms. Another volley incoming. "Shield. Javelin." The shells burst harmlessly, and a hail of rockets streaked from the Knight's back toward the enemy lines. Another alarm. Contacts. Large ones. Scanning his sensors, he saw the forms of two Knights moving into position along with the rest of the enemy forces. Not the best odds, but he felt confident in the Rex's abilities. A second alarm. A third Knight lumbered into range off to the left. Doubt laughed in his ear. The rebels were not supposed to have these resources at their disposal. The local forces must have let the armory fall. "Commander, we have a problem." "Hold, Knight. Our attack begins," came the reply over the comms. The men and women around his feet tensed for the attack. The hymn rose higher. A third alarm. A fourth contact, this one to the right. And close. How had it avoided detection? This was bad. This Knight was close enough for visual, and he turned the Rex, raising the Avenger cannon. Something was different. This machine, it did not move like the others. It's armor was wreathed in flames and darkness, and it shuddered and shook like some ill beast. "Hail and identify yourself, traitor! Prepare to fall before the Emperor's wrath!" The strange Knight halted, and a burst of static filled the cockpit. "...torment..." A whisper in the metallic hiss. The sky erupted as the Astartes made their entrance, drop pods flaring into view and drop ships thundering into the heart of the city. At this, the dark Knight turned and with a roar that shook the very frame of the Veritas Rex, launched itself at the rebel battle line. "Throne of Terra...," he whispered. He opened external comms, "For the Emperor, for the Imperium, CHARGE!"

Strohm Galvorn slumped forward in his command throne. The battle had been terrible, but they had won. The enemy was defeated. The Rex was damaged, but not grievously. Around his feet, the able tended to the wounded and mourned the lost. Sister Noctis again led the Sisters in a hymn, this one of solemn victory. The mysterious Knight stood apart, and had again assumed the appearance of an infirm creature, wracked with pain. A sharp contrast to the battle, where it had moved with a frenzied abandon, slashing madly with the brutal twin-bladed Reaper and blasting apart foes with its thermal cannon. He opened up comms on all channels, searching for the veil of static that had come across before. "Sir Knight, you fought honorably and admirably. Please give me your name, that it may be lauded."

"...Torment...Unceasing..."

And then it turned, and was soon gone.

All done. I want to thank you all for coming along on what has turned into quite the quest. I hope you like the end result. The Torment Unceasing, Ghost Knight. Onward and upward. Already started painting Belial, Prime is nearly done, and I may finally finish that Legion of the Damned squad I started years ago.

As always, thanks for looking!

EDIT: Whoops...2020 models completed: 6.

Post by: youwashock

Thank you, guys!

zahnib, for the trim, it is old Boltgun mixed with a little black, then stipple edges and a few other spots with a brighter silver, then hit rivets, grills, details with Nuln Oil, then stipple other areas with Chestnut ink and sponge on some wear with black. For the structure, metal areas are first primed black, then drybrushed sloppily with P3 Molten bronze, then stippled sloppily with a craft store bronze that is a lighter shade. After that it is drybrushed with Army Painter Plate Mail Metal. Then you hit recessed areas or areas you want some grime build-up with Agrax or Nuln Oil, feel free to get streaky or sloppy here, as well. Next there is a patchy stipple with Citadel Chestnut ink for the rust spots. Finally sponge dings with Vallejo German Grey. It's pretty loose. You just keep throwing stuff at it until you are satisfied that it is dirty enough.

Love the paint job on the "Torment Unceasing" from a technical perspective. I want to love the whole thing but... something about knights just seems to put me off. Seriously, all the components of the paint job are excellent, everything about the paint job works together, I just wish it were a different figure. Like a War-hound or Gundam.

That said, the fluff? Oh god YES! It's perfect. I need to go murder my desire to do a Legion of the Damned force again (now with a full spread of Imperial forces) but totally worth it!

ChaoticMind, I hope you got in on the Fightin' Fungi KS, then.

MegaDave, me too! They are another unit long overdue for painting, and my favorite Aspect.

Appreciate the comments, guys. Couple quick WiP shots. Armor for Belial, still have to do a little shading and add patina. Progress on Mr. 100 Stores. About time. Two years of loafing on this one. For shame.

Mushroom Reaper also progressing. Most likely the next finished. Then it is wrap-up time for him and Prime.

Thanks, all. A fellow of infinite jest...

Argive, you mean on the Knight? There is a lip built up out of the basing material for the craters, then it is painted over.

Fifty, you would have to go back pretty far, just about two years. A primer mishap left me not working on him for a long time. Here's the WiP again:

Thank you very much, all of you. You are all very kind.

Mushroom Reaper is done, so it is varnish time for him and Optimus. In the meantime, a couple unrelated things occurred.

Had some magnets left over from the mass of Ronin I bought, so I went for this little luxury. I have not magnetized anything in a long time, but this seems to have worked out so far. And since I had putty out to fill the gaps on the autocannons, I broke this guy out of his pack:

Another random fantasy monster. Now he won't be stuck looking off to his left.

More soon, I hope. Thanks for looking!

Magnets are the way to go now if your going to play 40K as things change pretty fast. Are you going to paint him up to match your others?
That beholder model looks cool, I have seen a few painted up already and if I still played D&D would pick one up for myself.

Thanks, guys!

MegaDave, I am thinking straight ahead for the main eye and all over the place for the eyestalks.

Yorkright, it will be the same green as the other Marines. I guess if I play again having the magnets will be good. For now it was just because I felt like it. All those extra arms felt like a waste.

Cap'n, they are pretty sturdy. Shook 'em around a bit and they didn't budge.

Thank you.

Wrapped up a couple models. First, Optimus Prime. Paint in a prime-arily prime-ary color scheme. Decals all have clear background, so be prepared for that if you decide to use them. I didn't, and as a result had to throw some white down as a backdrop real quick.

Fun model. Roll out.

Also finished the Reaper from Ganesha's Fighting' Fungi KS. This is a model I should have painted a long time ago, because I helped design it. When KS really exploded with projects like Sedition Wars, Relic Knights, and Kingdom Death, I always felt it would be cool to go in for one of the "vanity pledges" that allowed you to design a mini or some other element for the game. Usually a little too pricey. When Fighting' Fungi hit, seeing as how it was being run by one of my oldest friends, and the price didn't seem TOO high in that light and if I was going to do it, it seemed fitting to do it then, I pledged and submitted this guy, envisioned as a sort of mushroom boogeyman and battlefield specter, a mix of the Punisher and the Death Dealer, but a mushroom:

I then gave it a little thought and refined it for ease of casting and to add an executioner's hood look to the cap.

Andrea then gave it his 2-cents and drew it up so that it would match the look of all his other art in the book, resulting in this final look:

Now, that was in 2015. I received my minis, and promptly based and primed the Reaper because if any model was going to get painted, it should be that one first. And it sat. Until now. Not sure what happened there. But now he's done and ready to menace the dreams of all the poor mushroom children.

Sort of a milestone, I guess. As it turns out, after this I was asked to help design the Evil Dwarves for a future Ganesha KS, and should I ever get around to painting those, I will share the preliminary drawings, including stuff that sadly never got made.

2020 models completed: 8

Still working on Belial, the Dread, and the Legion. Progress hopefully soon. Thanks for looking!

Argh! Now I’m going to have to find somewhere in the UK to buy Optimus Prime. You’ve done a great job, really evoking the movie battle scene with Megatron, lots of shiny bits and some battle damage. Man that was a great movie!

Really cool background on the mushreaper, it’s pretty cool that you designed and had made your own character! Then you painted it like a BOSS! The lines on the back of his mushroom head being my favourite touch.

Yeah, Theo. The "Rifleman" is my favorite look, too.

So, the kids are doing better, but now I am sick. Figures. Anyway, soldiering on. With a little sculpting because why paint when you can work on something else...

First, the Avatar conversion is just about done. When it will be painted, who knows, but I can prime and be satisfied with that for a bit.

And a rework on something I made and never painted around 10 years ago. Why? Because fudge it, I never liked the old flames, and if this thing ever gets painted, it wasn't going to happen as it was before. Now, it's a strong maybe.

May try to paint tonight, depending on how I feel. Thanks for the well-wishes for the kids. Thanks for looking!

Magnets are always a good choice. I kind of dislike that step (mainly because I always get super glue all over my fingers etc.), but it's worth it in the end.

Avatar is primed. I will have to go back and see how long ago I started this build, but it has been a while, and for a good deal of that time, the only thing to finish has been the sword hilts. This hobby can be funny that way. Inspiration hits, work begins, attention wavers, doubt ties your hands, and the next thing you know you are up to your buttcheeks in unfinished projects. Worked on the lower Dread and primed Ainoa.

LotD are one of those things where I love the concept, but the minis that GW made were OK, but not something I wanted to deal with (didn’t get them in metal, not working with finecast) Tried making my own counts-as, but not really happy with them. Plus they moved the rules on me.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

gobert with the hard questions...first, the flames are done using VMC Hull Red, a mix of that and GW Troll Slayer Orange, then just Troll Slayer, GW Fire Dragon Bright, P3 Heartfire, P3 Sulfuric Yellow, GW Ulthuan Grey, GW Lothern Blue, and then something like Nuln Oil or AP Dark Tone. You just paint the wavy lines a little lower down on the part with each color, making sure to vary directions of the sway, until you get to the Lothern, which you thin the heck out of and streak randomly around the area. The last bit is to use the dark wash (Nuln/Dark Tone) to streak down from the top of the flames to smoke out the extremities. You want to make sure you are thinning because this is a lot of paint for some small areas. The Avatar...well, I had been wondering that myself. As I wrapped up the sculpting, I had the thought to basecoat in BA Red Contrast, then come in with a strong black drybrush followed by successive metals and then pick out all the details, maybe lighten the glow in the deepest recesses for a hot metal look. Wailing Doom(s?) Will be some sort of black plus colored highlights. So that's the current plan. Pics for rollover.

Thanks again for the comments and thanks for looking!

Sorry for the tough questions (not really, I’ll want to plagiarise those flames at some point!). I see what you mean about thinning, that’s a LOT of layers in some small areas! 100% worth the effort though!

I always loved the glowing Avatar look, I’m sure you’ll smash it out of the park! The plans certainly sound good.

I see your old skool Space Hulk Terminators are taking a rest as they close in on the painting queue

That is the way of the Avatar...the molten inside held together with burnt metal and Eldritch magic.

At least that's the way I painted mine and it has been one of my favourites ever since.

The Termies are back there doing the same thing Centurius used to do: reminding me they need to be painted someday.

The other models are a Reaper water dwelling girl of some sort, Blessed Vestal Laura from Warzone Res, and Reaper's winter fairy, destined for a Tinkerbell color scheme perched on that gear. Looking to use Contrast on those three as much as possible, so as to best achieve a livable result in the shortest amount of time.

Thank you, guys.

Slow going, but I finally have some finished models to show. Important ones, for me, since they represent the culmination of another long-running project. Not due to scope, but due to the fact that my primer splattered Centurius and the frustration caused a SERIOUS pause in working on the Legion Marines. But now they are done, and I can tick another project off the very long list. I also knocked out Suzy Belle, a Dark Age mini I bought because it looked cool and was on sale and came with a big monster that looks like it would be fun to paint one day. By comparison, she took a couple of days, versus the years between when I painted the first Primaris Legion and now. Suzy first, mostly Contrast, a neat post-apoc gal with odd fashion sense and odder weapons. I know next to nothing about Dark Age, so maybe her stick is of some significance.

And the Legion of the Damned, Primaris-sized. And Centurius. Or a reasonable Primaris-facsimile. This will be the third Centurius I have converted since he was released. Knowing that I would most likely never lay hands on the original (and now I am too weary of recasts to buy anything but one still in package, and I don't think I will be shelling out for that), I made my own. The first was consumed in the making of the second, and that stands unpainted on a shelf to this day. Available materials and practiced skill have made this one by far my favorite (as is the way of things. my best work is whatever I will do next). Glad to see them done. Happy with how they look. On with the pics.

So that's done. Sort of. I had a mad idea to revisit an old Land Raider, painting it using the flame scheme from the Knight and Legion. I got this thing in 2nd edition, 2nd hand, with no sponsons or heavy bolters. I cobbled together cannons from some spare plastic Warlord Titan weapons, inspired by this picture:

Oh, the good ol' days... Anyway, I sprayed it too heavily and sort of half-baked the color scheme (young me could be a very lazy painter, never really painted my Marines), leaving me with a model that served its purpose (which was, seemingly, to be blown to pieces before it could do anything), but with which I was always a little unsatisfied. Here's how it looks now:

Seriously considering sanding the wrinkles off and giving it some fire. We will see. There is quite the age gap between this thing and the Marines. They could look funny next to each other. It is adding one more project to the pile, and I really do try to not look back. Distracts from the now, and all. We will see...

2020 minis completed: 13

As always, thanks for looking!

The legion look fantastic! Still hands down the best flame pattern I’ve seen. Really adds to the grim darkness, especially with the subdued black armour.

Nice work on Suzy. Her dress sense doesn’t seem the most practical, I certainly wouldn’t be happy letting my daughters out of the house like that! Still at least she’s carrying a big sword in case any ne’er do wells approach her!

Loving those Legionnaires! And I hear you on the gut-punch of painting mishaps, and needing to continue on to new stuff rather than constantly reworking old. Still, it could be interesting to see what you do with that old Land Raider.

Thank you so much, everyone. I really appreciate the comments. It is always good to see the minis get such a positive response. Suzy was a little experiment to get ready for the small pile of Celtos Gael ladies I will be painting in the hopefully near future. Plenty of opportunities for tattoos there.

Slow progress pic. Ladies are underway, amd the brainbox has been attached to the legs on the Dread. Highlights there and then it is on to some guns. Not pictured is a little more work on Belial and the Teratons. Also the Swampers.

Thanks for looking! And MegaDave? You're probably right.

That Centurius is gorgeous. You've done an absolutely smashing job with both the conversion and the painting. Once again, your flames really sell the paint job. There is enough to have an impact, but not so many as to be over bearing.

And for as much as I dislike the Primaris models, you've done a great job at turning them into something awesome.

Thanks, guys!

I don't know, Theo. He's got 4 guns. One for..each of...you? On second thought, that doesn't really work. Oh, well.

Finished some things. First up, the Swampers for Song of Blades and Heroes. Mooks have been done for a long time. Heroes have been WiP for a long time. Glad to have them done.

And with the Durocks. Forward, minions!

Also finished the three random ladies. First, the WInter Fairy from Reaper, inspired by Tinkerbell and decaying metal.

Next up, a Werner Klocke nymph from Reaper. Painted as Namor, the Submariner, complete with ankle wings. Nymaera, Atlantis' Avenging Daughter. You know it's a Klocke, because of the tush and because she is looking down and to the left.

Then, there is Blessed Vestal Laura, from Warzone Resurrection. Really like this model.

And finally, a Dreadball. Magnetized for when it winds up on its lonesome.

The cheese stands alone.

Plenty more going on. Hope to have more done soon. Keep safe all, and thanks for looking!

Good update YWS. I bought the original Dreadball core set but could not cope with cleaning up the restic mould lines on the respective teams, no such problems with the ball though. What size magnet is that and was it much of a pain to do?

Blessed Vestal Laura is my favourite of the lot, love that green armour with the gold accents on it.

Thank you, everybody! It is nice to still be able to share the hobby.

ListenToMeWarriors, I am not sure the exact size of the magnets, but pretty small. Couple mm/sixteenth of an inch or so. Wasn't a hassle. Small bit, slow drilling, little super glue, and you're set.

gobert, I used cork to make the shelf and hide the integrated base Reaper loves so bad, then hit it with a coat of wood filler. After that I hit the water area with texture gel, making a low slope out to the edge of the base. It was painted in the sand color, then a light blue band, then a darker blue band. After that it was filled with a layer of Woodland Scenics "Blue Realistic Water."

Thanks again!

Thank you! He's almost done. Have not had a ton of time this week for painting. Base is nearly there, and a couple more little models are just about ready for pics, too. Meanwhile, here's a cross post from the Retro/OOP model thread in P&M. Was fun to pull out some oldies from around the turn of the century. Seriously, some of these models were last shared online when I put them on CMON between 2002-2003.

My painted Confrontation Wolfen and Kelt Sessairs. What a time. Miss Rackham. Shame they put all their eggs in a shaky PPM basket.

And some possibly more obscure models.

Koralon Broodmaster from VOID and my Razorback Growler Chief from VOR.

More goodies from Cell Entertainment. A selection of Ronin and two cars from KRASH.

Thanks, guys.

Theo, their style wasn't for everybody. Personally, I loved their work. Had a lot of their minis stacked up before selling my Devourers and Dwarves and moving a couple forces worth of Undead and Griffons onto my friends in hopes of playing again. Didn't work. Probably should have just kept the models. Still have my Wolfen, Sessairs, and a small force of Mid-Nor Dwarves. Oh, and some of the humans from the Ophidian side. Apsotates and so on. One day.

Finished some stuff. First, LE Dreadball trophy from the first KS. Intended for use as a score tracker. If I ever play again. Played one game, gave everyone in the group a team of their own to drum up interest, aaaaand...that's as far as that went.

Then I finished the Wendigo for Malifaux. This is another big deal, as he has sat partially painted on my desk for years. Not sure why, especially now that he's done. Seems to have been a simple enough thing. I hated this mini for a long time, sitting there, mocking me with his many tiny parts and fiddly assembly and long-shanks cowboy scenery piece. However, now that he is done, I am glad to see him take his place next to the rest of the crew, which he completes. Starter box done. After several years. Over five. Again, never played the game, but they make some very cool minis.

And the whole crew together for the first time. Chilling out, as it were.

And the Last Shadow King, the Lord of Cynder, Beli'al, is complete. I feel as if this one worked out rather well. Quite happy with him overall. Fun model. Fairly easy to paint, as he is basically four big parts: cloth, wings, armor, smoke.

And here he is facing a charge from the brave kunoichi of the Oishiikage ninja clan...

Plenty more in the works. Dread's body is done, first set of guns is close, Beholder, Eldar, mushrooms, Dreadball. Should be prepping the Gael from Celtos soon. Hope you all are staying safe and well.

Thanks for looking!
