Thanks, guys! Ask and receive.
Raziel, savior, destroyer, soul reaver. Happy with the results. Always something I would change or approach differently, but I do like him. Sort of a pain to photograph, though. Lighting ended up a little dramatic, but I think it works.
No plans for a Kain at this time. However, one should never say never. Time to pick something Space Mariney. Thanks for looking!

My hands are not steady enough to paint that way.

Great work on the huge dude, lots of good textures going on
Also I had forgotten how weird Raziel looks, anatomically speaking He's not just a blue ninja guy with a psyonic blade like I remember from *checks wiki then chokes on his coffee* 1996!

Thank you all, very much!
Stop it, Boss Salvage, you'll make me feel old.
What's that the Cap'n is always saying? Something about a long painting war? He's not wrong. Here we go again.
Primed most of Cammy, another Randolorian and Velma 2.0. When my friend printed her, I wasn't sure which options I would be using so I had him print everything. This included a nude torso, which I certainly wasn't going to let go to waste. Initially I planned to do it up as a 3/4 bust or something, but I got industrious and boldly printed another set of legs on my home printer. Seeing as how they are textured, I figured it could handle it. So far, it looks like I was right. Cammy is going to need a little more clean up, as some artifacts jumped out after priming.
Also trying to get some more Dice and Fire minis done. I wish THESE were the veteran models and not regular grunts. They are so much more dynamic and their swords are way more over the top. I don't know when I will play again. Between this game and Crisis Protocol, I don't like feeling like my knowledge of what my models do is probably outdated. I guess GW players deal with this and the associated fatigue as well. But that is one reason why I don't play 40K, either. BB Zoat is lurking, too.
Plenty on the go. Thanks for looking!

Toyed with the idea of entering Cammy for Space Marine month. She's MI-6, which is military, so sort of like a marine. And she takes up a lot of space, see? But I went with the Sicaran instead.

Cross-posting the round-up from the monthly challenge. This was the first year I tried to take part every month, and I found it to be a lot of fun and a boon to motivation. Prior to this go-round I think I had only entered once, maybe twice.
Space Marine
Doomsday
Mistakes Were Made
Centennial Challenge
Renewal
Some Like It Hot
Sun's Out, Guns Out
Halloween Special
Wrecking Ball
Open Round
From The Shadows
Out With The Old, In With The New
Hopefully I can keep it up for this next year. Looking back I am happy with the entries, and I feel like they display the diversity in subjects and manufacturers I am sort of known for. That's a nice way to say I can't stick with anything. Velma, Gwenom, Raziel and the dragon stand out for me as successes. Thanks for a great year, thanks for the votes and thanks for looking!

Snow makes priming an issue, but I finally got to spray another coat on Cammy and Velma and I got a few tank parts, too. In the meantime, I polished off the Night's Watchmen that have been stinking up my desk for a while. I feel they will look ok on the table if I ever play again.
And the aforementioned spraying.

Starting to give it some character after partial assembly. I like vehicle models quite a bit, but always shied away due to size intimidation. I mean, my Armorcast titans have sat unpainted for decades. Looking for an effective method, and I hope this is a start. Also, eyes ain't what they used to be, so bigger models seem to be a thing I am easing into. Who knows. Rambling on a Sunday after losing an hour for no reason.

I agree that the Sicaran is looking good!
Also the worry about rules. 10th dumping a lot of rules for the 30k stuff into legends took a lot of wind out of may sails. And I have troubles with painting tanks to start. I love the look of them when done, but they just take so long to paint. Hard to keep up motivation

You’ve been busy youwashock. Benchtulu came out amazingly well, not a print line to be seen! Succubus Queen looks great with her slime buddy too.
Edit: I really am behind there’s a whole other page here!
Raziel looks amazing and the painting comp recap was really cool, masses of diversity and the bigger models look great. The Nights watch chaps look great, the ASOIAF unit bases always look super cool and the have great poses to boot. Sicarian looks sick… sorry, I’ll get my coat

Thanks, you three. Very kind words.
Sicaran has limped along. Not a lot of painting going on. May not finish in time if I can't get out of my head. Feeling a little disconnected.
In other news, a long time friend finally sold his house here in town and decided to pretty much dump all the game stuff that had been chilling in the garage for about 16 years. It was a lot. Most went to a friend with a game store, but I took a few shinies.
A grip of Rackham, 1999, and the requisite GW among other things. Sealed copy of Ragnarok and Hybrid. Warmaster, which I guess I now own again. There was a small painted Empire force to go with all the blister packs.
Also this guy:
Painted one many moons ago as a Black Knight for Mordheim. This one will be green.
And an absolute ton of random CCGs, which I pulled this guy from.
Never played, but I'll take a Fett where I can get it.
Thanks again for the comments, Tommy, Nev, gobert. Plenty on the go. Thanks for looking!
EDIT: It appears that I came out on top of the monthly challenge for the last year. Thank you to all who voted and to Nev and Midget Gems for keeping it running. I attribute my score to some early successes and to entering every month. Here's to another year, if I can keep it up.

Don’t sell yourself short! Take pride, pat yourself on the back, pop the champaign. You earned that win with your mad skills.
And while yes, your podium spots were more skewed to the first half, it’s not like you were an also-ran in the second. Took a prize more often than not overall. And while showing up does help, you were still well ahead of the pack, even for other people who were in every month. You still had an average entry score higher than anyone in the top ten. If Ezki or CanceledApocolypse had entered every month and maintained their average, they might have been able to knock you off the high spot. But they both missed half the comps, so that’s a lot of speculation.
You ended with a 7 point lead over second place, which is like a full month gap. That’s not winning by a nose, photo finish stuff. Whole horse length.
(Not to throw shade on everyone else in the comp. Amazing work from everyone, up and down the pack.)
--
That is quite the pile of retro goodness! Always fun to paint old stuff, so much character in classic sculpts. Enjoy.
I played a little of the SW card game back when it came out. I remember it being fun, with some quirky mechanics. It did tend to suffer from PTW. While you could make some halfway decent decks with assorted cards, it suffered from the “I have all the title characters in my deck, I win” So more so then MtG, where you could make somewhat decent decks spamming commons/uncommons, it was a lot more pronounced. Still have them in a box somewhere.
Good luck getting the tank done. Motivations and time at the bench can be rough some days. Hope you can make it!
Speaking of which, I need to get some paint down...

Congrats on the big win, it was well deserved! You always enter quality stuff that I can only dream of doing. Also, very nice haul there! I love the classic Star Wars CCG and have a large collection of the cards in my closet. It was a better game than it got credit for even if, as Nev mentioned, power levels of decks was skewed towards the more rare cards (particularly the main characters). The company that made it, Decipher Inc., also made a very good Star Trek CCG and an amazing Lord of the Rings TCG, probably my favorite trading card game of all time.

Cam, as always you are too kind. I do my best with what I've got, and hope you guys like it.
Cap'n, the weathering is just sponged on using a mix of brown, blue and a dash of black.
Tommygun, it's Citadel Contrast. Apothecary White.
JoshInJapan, I bought all the Mandos released for Legion that I know of beyond Rook Kast, who I believe is still locked up in a box of stuff I don't need or want. Not a canon color scheme (at least as far as I know) just trying for visually interesting.
Still working on Cammy. Pretty slow going now that I have switched back to brushwork from sprays, and life hasn't been conducive to working on minis.
Also picking away at the Night's Watch.
These four are very nearly done. As with the rest, painted for overall effect on the unit base rather than for individual oomph.
Always more on the go. Thanks for looking!

I got off the blu-tack/paint bottle wagon pretty late, and the chonks were on their way out. Otherwise, that's all I would have. The skinnies aren't bad, but for my big sandwich grabbers, I prefer the heftier handle.

Wrapped up the Night's Grunts. I hate that I still love seeing units of minis. I feel like I have been conditioned to collect and paint a certain way, sometimes, and that way is no longer practical. Why paint ten of something when I get what I need by painting five? Or one? Need to look into that. Anyway, on to the next block of infantry.
And I fired up the 3D printer again. It has slumbered, but after getting Cammy done I feel OK printing this guy. A Rancor. Who may or may not end up as part of the Mando collection with a handler or rider.
Still working on the Star Eagle ships. Thanks for looking!

I think I agree with you about units. I have four big armies )and two smaller ones) for Kings of War that fill me with joy when I look over them, but at the same time with despair because I know I will likely never field them. They are taking up a lot of space, but I just can't seem to get rid of them...
Going from that near- life sized Cammy model to some teeny-tiny spaceships must have given you whiplash.

Tommygun, I don't know. I don't play Legion, I just collect the Mandos.
Ships are done.
Fun little things. Here's a pic with some of my CAV force, which the not-Gunstar was painted to match.
Also finished the Zoat for Blood Bowl. Not an official GW mini, I believe it was made by Impact!
And with some of the Wood Elf team.

Challenge models this month are something I have wanted to do for a bit, but couldn't wedge into the schedule. Judge Dredd from Citadel and Foundry. Not even sure where the original came from. Must have bought it at some point. The Foundry preview pack I bought when it came out, and like so many other minis, they have sat since then. Finished up a couple models. First up, another Mando I refer to as No-Katan, since they haven't seen fit to release her for Legion yet, despite being one of the first out of the gate for Shatterpoint. Seeing what has gone down with X-Wing and Armada, I'm not holding my breath.
And the back.
And the group as it stands, so far.
Got the Valkyrie for Shadows of Brimstone sorted in short order. Nothing too spectacular going on here, model or paint-wise, but she's done. I feel that way about a lot of the models for that game. Close to awesome, but not quite there.
That said, this model stands tall over her sister in the same box. That one may as well be a cardboard standee.

youwashock wrote:I feel that way about a lot of the models for that game. Close to awesome, but not quite there.
I understand what you mean, but I think you did an outstanding job to make her look a lot more awesome! The tones fit perfectly.
Rancor will be a star. No doubt about it!

Switching over to the summer challenge for a second, since I had better make some headway there before August.
This is where I am at as of last night. I am feeling pretty good about it. I think it will work over a whole model. I remember these prints coming out cleaner. I will be doing a lot of clean up for this project. Oh, well. What model doesn't require some prep?
Thanks for looking!

Thank you all, very much!
Sorry, JoshInJapan, the orange kind of clashed with my...everything.
Looking to knock out a couple more Mandos for the monthly challenge. These will be in No-Katan's colors, since she always has a couple peeps from her entourage around. And it's getting to be time to wrap up the Mando portion of my life. 4 more randos to go after this, I think. Plus Fett and Din Djaren. Oh, and the Rancor now that he's part of the family. He should go pretty quick, though.
Progress on the summer challenge. Excited to see some more done, get a real idea of how they will look.
Plenty going. Hoping to do another fast-track job on the Shadows of Brimstone Blood Priestess. Cool mini. One of their best to date, I think.
Thanks for looking!

Yes, Retromancer, the wraithknights are 3D prints.
Wrapped up the Blood Priestess. Fun model. Ended up a little colorful.

Post by: JoshInJapan
Huh. I don't recall seeing any WIP of this model. She's quite well done-- the festive colors really catch the eye, but the expression of menace you gave her face really makes the model. The little puddle on the ground is a delightful little detail, as well.

JoshInJapan, no WiPs for her. In and out. Felt compelled to get her done, but as she isn't for a challenge, or even the class I am playing in Brimstone right now, I wanted to not dawdle.
Speaking of WiP...here's the Mandos and some more WK parts. Trying to keep at it.

Ramping up a little on the wraithknights. Getting excited to do some assembling, but that's still a little way off.
And in the "related to nothing and completely unnecessary" category, while tooling around I found a knockoff Void Stalker, my favorite BFG Eldar ship. Not a perfect replica, but pretty neat. Printed out at double size because why not.

Many thanks, guys!
Beep Boop as the monthly challenge topic gives me the perfect opportunity to paint these two. Been thinking about them a lot, but they don't rate pushing other stuff out of the way. Now they can finally be finished. My Pit Slave gang will be fully painted again. Pretty sure both of these have been shown before, but that's as far as they went. Sabre-Gaia and The Iron Maximus, the leader and mentor/lieutenant for the gang, the majority of which was painted...a LONG time ago. When the Pit Slaves were first released. These two came along later, one as a re-fit for the old leader, one as an excuse to use the old, tiny Techmarine.
And some more WK progress. Your votes of confidence thus far have been greatly appreciated.
Always plenty to do. Thanks for looking!

Nev, nothing too crazy for the bases. They will be done up to match the Exodites, and will most likely be worked into that narrative. Or at least match my modern Eldar base style.

And that's a wrap.
Two 3D printed Wraithknights, made using a Shadow Spectre mod that I found and thought looked kinda cool. I had a good time with this project (mostly, the stress over the sheer scale at times was intense) and feel they have turned out well. Always good to see a project completed, especially at times like this where I still haven't even attempted to paint the GW Wraithknight I converted years ago. These guys are pretty big. For fun I printed them about 12% bigger than stock. On with the show. Having a twelve pic limit this time, there's a lot ahead.
Been cooking away at a bit of fluff to tie them in with the Exodites. The pilots are a male and female Eldar who each lost their twin and have a connection to Curaidh, the Snow-Crowned Prince. He will be reaching out to them for help in the conflict coming his way. If I ever get around to finishing that story.
As I said, happy with the results. The paint is a little crude in places, but it usually is for me.
Plenty more on the go. Need to finish Beep Boop, most pressingly. And get those pesky Mandos done.
Thanks for looking!

Your knights look amazing. I love the way you've customized them through 3-d printing but they still match the vibe of the rest of the army. Great tie in with the exodite lore as well.

blockade23, another Wraithknight is the only solution.
Beep boop. All done. Sabre-Gaia, Escher ganger turned Pit Slave rebel leader, and The Iron Maximus, ex-champion pit fighter turned cranky mentor.
Fun stuff. Big throwback on the bases, since I wanted to sort of match the rest of the gang. Which I painted in the 90's. Not sure why I felt the need to add models, but whatever, the gang is fully painted again. Quite happy to see S-G done, because looking back through my gallery I saw that I posted her build in 2017. For some reason I got the urge to re-do my Pit Slave leader. The Maximus came about because I wanted to make use of the cool old Techmarine, but we was so tiny. He makes a good "old warrior in a walking iron lung" type.
Plenty more to do. Absolute Unit is next month's challenge. The Rancor may be up to the task. And I put a tiny bit more paint on Velma. Need to get that going again. So many minis, so little time.
Thanks for looking!
EDIT: Oops, forgot the group pic. Gang's all together again. Shows that the green rims are to match, not to taste. All these guys except for the Wyrd conversion with the metal mask were painted back in the 90's in about a day and a half. Not my finest hour, but it got the job done and I still look back fondly on the days of them getting shot up by Ratskins.

Those Wraiths are stunning! The teal markings are lovely but their faces steal the show, superbly done. It’s also impressive how the layer lines are so well hidden
The pit slaves came out really well too, the ex-techmarine is a great model, even if he’s a bit short for a space marine!

All the pit weapons are a little absurd. You'd figure they would go flying the second they made contact with something.

Poor techmarine. Guess they figured the servo-arm would give him some presence.
Saw something in the 3D forum about a Gunstar. Well, I love those, so here it is. Printed large enough to have a 35 mm pilot be believable.

Here's something a little silly, but with potential. While I was working on the summer challenge, there was one forum member who seemed...attached...to the orange of the raw printed parts. Their posts got my mind working, and so I set to printing out another Wraithknight with the intention of treating it more like a non-wargame model. Molded in color and assembled with minimal painting. Would it work? Does it? I think maybe it does. So much so that I plan to do one or two more, in colors a little less eye-scorching, and some tanks, possibly a wraithlord or two. A small wraith/mechanized force printed in color with some painted embellishments. Any infantry I can worry about later. Seeing as how I plan to resurrect the school Warhammer club, I could use a low investment travel force. We'll see if it's a good idea or a bad one.

Working away on Fett and Co. Long-time readers may recall that I am a late adopter of painting models unassembled. I still think it was a good move, but you sure need to plan more and really keep track of where you are in the process.

Finished with the man himself. I am looking to recreate the look from when he first gets his armor back. Original colors, but trashed by the Sarlaac and some time with the Jawas. Yikes. Month's almost over. Better get serious. Yeah, sure.
Trying to get something going on the Watcher. Inspiration fled. Could still get him done, though.
Sketching in highlights and where I want the light showing from under the cloak. Meh.
While I have not been busy, the printer sure has. Putting theory into practice with the Print N' Play Eldar army. Two Wraithknights and four tanks in progress. Looking at an Iyanden style build, as those models should be doable in filament. Minimal paint. Feels like heresy, but it's fun to make toys.
Always more to do. Stay nerdy, my friends. Thanks for looking!

Post by: JoshInJapan
That Watcher model looks like it will be a lot of fun to paint-- all those folds in the cloth should make for some fun shading and highlighting. I look forward to seeing how you approach the glow-from-within-- I've never been able to that satisfactorily.

Post by: Nevelon
Keep at it! Month is not over yet.
I should fiddle with my printer more. I was not happy with the level of detail it was kicking out, so lost interest. Interesting that you are doing Eldar, as smooth curves are not really something I expect from filament...
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, you two!
Yeah. He's neat. All cloth and such. Got my feel back for him and should be able to get him done. I love Kingdom Death. And I hate Kingdom Death. The game has such a staggering amount of content as it is, with even more to come. I doubt I would recognize the game at this point. And I have a festering bitterness over how long the KS is taking to fulfill, spurred by how nonchalant the creator has been about it and the fact that there never seems to be a lack of a sale on their website of new stuff. Yeah, I get it, development times, keep the lights on, etc. I don't care anymore. It's been too long. Every little new thing that takes your attention away from the projected 10 YEAR fulfillment time-line is a problem. Especially when those new things have game content. Want to keep your sculptor busy? Cool, whatever. But quite wasting time on developing game content not related to the KS. Anyhow, here's how the Watcher looks at the moment. Rant over.
It's a bit of "acceptable roughness" where the prints are concerned, Nev. I think I can live with it, as it is a bit of a lark, anyway. Seeing what I can get away with, as it were. A little progress on that front. The Night Spinner is getting there, and the Wave Serpents. Need to print the extended compartment for the 2nd one, but both have their shield vanes.
Got a Watcher to finish. Thanks for looking!

First PnP tank is done. A Falcon because that's a good place to start, and it's still a great design even after all these years. Looking forward to seeing how they will all look together. The other three tanks aren't far from completion. Then it's time to assemble the Wraithknights while I print the Wraithlords.
Thanks for looking!
Ooo that's a big one, I've looked at those too in the store but I am too intimidated by them so instead bought (and already finished) a wraithknight, what craftworld are you painting that Falcon for?

Nev, this is what I am calling "done" at this point. If I get too bogged down with details I will probably just end up painting them for real.
Have not decided on a Craftworld name yet, but the army will follow an Iyanden theme of mostly spirit warriors.
Got the two Wave Serpents done.

Those gems really do sell the minis really well! BTW, what size nozzle are you using? I’ve really struggled with getting minis to print and am planning to try a 0.25mm on my Ender 3 V3 SE to see if that helps
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, gobert!
I have an E3V3SE, too. I am using the 0.4 nozzle at a .12 layer height. Works OK, but I wouldn't trust any Ender I have seen with real miniature work. Big stuff, yeah, but no infantry sized minis. I have heard Bambu printers can handle it, but have not tried them myself.

Post by: gobert
Snap! The 0.12 setting in the latest version of creality print seems to be doing me well. I’ll let you know if I can get any improvement with the thinner nozzles. I’m slightly regretting not spending a bit more for the bambu a1, some people are getting amazing results with pretty much stock settings. I like the idea of not needing to spend 3 days doing config prints!

Current state. Got the 3rd WL and just over half the WG in there. The rest of the WG are printed, just need to extricate the torsos from their support tombs. Printing a test for some warwalker stand-ins. More on that, soon.
Also going to do an Avatar. And there will be some authentic models in the form of Seers. Should think about painting Elric.

Thanks, JoshInJapan, Cap'n!
Elric has been started. A little. Hoping to get him done over the holiday (and maybe squeeze a pity day out of Nev).
Slow progress this week, but the Wraithguard are all done. Thank goodness. I am not made for batch painting. Or batch support removal, more accurately. But I dig how they look all together so far.
And the last few printed models are underway. An Avatar and some Zoats stand in for war walkers. The Zoats all had the same error in the file where the belly shell didn't print, leaving a sort of void. I was already planning some sculpted details, so they will get belly tanks similar to the Archivist. At least I hope so. Also shoulder guns, masks, shields and a few armor bits. Some sculpted, some printed. I originally planned to do the Avatar in fiery orange, but decided on ghostly green since the army is primarily spirit warriors. Have to see how that turns out.
Plenty to do. Thanks for looking!

Post by: youwashock
Thank you, all!
JoshInJapan, the end result wound up being sort of a mix between the two. Still favoring the pink side, I hope.
Yes, Cap'n. The whole army (barring a couple characters I have planned) is 3D printed in color with as little painting as possible.
Aside from a wash to tone it down, you're looking at it, gobert. The details will still be painted (or printed in another color) but for the most part, that's it.
Finished Elric. Fairly satisfied.
An ancient character, an ancient model, an ancient basing style. Fun stuff. Always nice to revisit the early days of the hobby.
Avatar all assembled. Zoat tank in progress. Plenty more on the go. Better decide on model(s) for December's open round.

Elric looks great. I like the different whites for the hair and skin-- not a lot of pink left, but they are visibly different so nothing blends into anything else.
I imagine that Stormbringer was a challenge to paint-- you have to keep it black, but still bring out the lines. The flask of purple by the crossguard is a nice little addition.
+1 for the Goblin Green base.

Looking to get some living Eldar into the wraith army. Official GW and everything. I hope to get Shadowguide in as an Illic-alike or something similar, and an assassin/seer based on Yvraine's frame. A Farseer needs to happen, but that's looking like a complicated conversion of Eldrad and may be too much for the month. And a Lhamaean, just because. Have to see.

Zoat progress. These guys are turning out to be a lot of work, but I hope in the end it will be worth it. The guns and shields are dry-fit/blu-tacked in place. All the sculpting is done for this guy, and I will probably finish him up to solidify the look for the unit.

Avatar done. Moving away a little bit from the "print n' play" concept, but still a quick bit of work, considering. Again, went for sort of a spectral look as the army is mostly dead guys. Not entirely convinced that it works, or that the blood trail isn't too much, but better to take risks like that on 3D prints and not 100 dollar models. I think the flames along the blade work ok. Doing too much sculpting for this project.

I have two outstanding KS projects ( one is Kingdom Death, ugh) and I think it is for the best that they be the last.

That Broadside looks a little stumpier than I remember the original model being. Is that the camera angle or am I misremembering?
89168
Post by: youwashock
He's pretty squatty, even printed at 110%. I don't have an original to compare to beyond a conversion I made several years ago, the only Tau model I ever built, based on a 1st generation broadside. The backpack is definitely bigger on mine, and the thighs look larger. Maybe they were always like this? I remember limb-lengthening being a common modification to early battlesuits. Unless I just made that up in my brain.
59054
Post by: Nevelon
I know “toy like” gets tossed around a lot, but that broadside is living it. I know the goal is print and play, and he looks fine. But Tau start with an aesthetic that leans into that. Haha.
One of these days I’ll start a Tau force.
Nice progress on the seer.

Yeah, the broadside looks a lot more "toy on a base" than the Eldar, I think. Hopefully it will be less so when seen in a group. Printing the other two broadsides now.

All done. Just the two minis. No time for any more. These two will have to suffice as the only living Eldar in the PnP Wraith army, for now. (I may or may not be resisting the urge to paint a small batch of Harlequins to go with them.)
Eldar Seer and Sniper.
And some individual pics of the seer, as she is less 2D than the sniper. The Amallyn Shadowguide mini is pretty nice, and has plenty of detail, but is fairly flat when you get down to it.
And a shot of her with her Zoat bodyguards.
Army shots, soon. Maybe tomorrow.
Plenty to do. Thanks for looking!
55682
Post by: JoshInJapan
Ooh, that seer is lovely. The blade turned out great-- it really pops against the black bodysuit. Speaking of black, I continue to admire your ability to spot highlight black. I can never do that to my satisfaction.
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, JoshInJapan! I'm glad you like her!
Seeing as how the two ladies and the Zoats are done, it seems a good time to take pics of the Print and Play Eldar army. There is the outside chance that I will go back and add those Harlequins I mentioned, maybe a couple low-level Seers, but for now it's done.
So, now the question: does it work? Is this enough to not break the immersion or kill the feel of the game? If you saw this army across from you, would it be a bad experience from the start knowing it wasn't traditionally painted? I am not sure, myself.
Still, it looks cool on the shelf, and it was a fun enough experience that I have already dived into the next army. Some immediate gratification(mostly, the Zoats were a lot of work) to get me through the longer projects.
Thanks for looking!

Post by: Turaxa
This is a really interesting project. I don't think it is immersion breaking at all, some people field armies that are substantially unpainted after all. I think your colour-accurate plastic is better than a grey horde, especially since you based the miniatures. This whole army traditionally painted to the same standard as the seer and the sniper would be most impressive, and that would be my preference, but if your objective is to build a ready-to-play army quickly then I think this is certainly one way of doing it.
59054
Post by: Nevelon
It looks fun. Better then grey plastic, not quite as nice as a traditionally painted army. I generally don’t have problems with armies, I have problems with players. As long as you are not a jerk, it should be fine. The only issue is what are the zoats supposed to be? You may have mentioned it, but I forgot. But that’s the only non-WYSWYG thing, so everything else is straightforward. And I can keep track of 1d3 counts-as for the length of a game.

Post by: blockade23
Not sure if you mentioned it earlier, but have you put some transfers onto the army? Or are you planning too? That might give you the chance to add some more detail that would make it seem more painted. I mean hell, you could go back and edge highlight a bunch of stuff too, but that just makes it more work than the goal of the project seemed to be. Decals are a midground spot that add the 'I painted it' vibe to an alternatively painted army.
Agree with the Zoats comment above as I'm not sure what you'd run them as in an Eldar army list. Most things are T3 and anything bigger you already have models for, unless you run them as corsairs and then...they're... some type of dark eldar model?

Post by: youwashock
Thanks for comments and for sharing your thoughts on the matter. I still feel a little like I'm cheating on the hobby.
The Zoats would be played as War Walkers if I ever did field them. That idea spawned the dual shoulder guns and shields, since WW (at least back in the day) are protected by an energy field.
Decals are an interesting idea, but I wonder how they would look on the textured surface. Any time I have put decals on 3D minis, they were painted first.
A little bauble for a long-running model. Trying to get Velma 2 finished. However, inspiration struck and I am sculpting this pocket watch based on a dice holder my wife gave me. Tiny thing. Will be attached to some fine chain I had laying around for some project in the distant past.
Thank for looking!

Nice work on Velma so far!
That is one good looking army!
I for one would not be offended nor have any sort of negative feelings seeing that army on the tabletop. On the contrary, I think it's much more interesting to see things that are out of the ordinary.
As a long time Warhammer hobbyist who has learned to paint by observing the 'Eavy Metal style box art paint jobs, I know that it's the style many prefer and the schemes seen in army codexes are the "usual way to go".
I for one am happy to see the hobbyist's own take on the theme and color scheme.
So no, it would not kill the feel of the game. It's a brilliant group and you should display it with pride!

Lets see:
Army painted - check (who cares how it was done, that is way better than an army of grey)
On bases - check
Do the figures look like what they represent - check
GW figures are expensive, but you have also bought a large number of them already (and I am sure will buy more).
I guess one question is, are you happy with the texture of the printed models? My friends, who have printed a few tanks, have later noted they were not as happy with them as the real models (so no one has gone all in for a completely printed army).
I would not refuse to play against you, this is way better than battling a monochrome army of grey plastic with proxies flagged here and there.
My two cents,

One last model at the seven-and-a-halfth hour for 2024. If I say so myself, it's a humdinger.
Finished Velma 2.0. Finally. Not sure what the hold up was. Maybe just scared of that vast expanse of flesh. Which seems silly, in retrospect. Maybe just needed inspiration, which was furnished courtesy of the pocket watch dice holder my wife gave me for Xmas. Had to make one for Velma, and that was all it took. Pretty jazzed with her. There's very little I would do differently, at this point. Not a bad way to end the year. Very NSFW pics of the whole model:

Post by: youwashock
See you in the funny papers, 2024.
Let's see...what did I do?
Looks like the year started slow, with the first finished mini being the KD Ninja at the end of January.
Followed by a Cthulhu-themed Benchy.
And a slime.
Who needed a mistress.
Raziel was next.
Love that close-up. Made a tank.
Mandalorians happened. Grouping them here.
And a big one, Fett and his entourage should go here, too.
Painted Cammy. She's big.
Zoat for BB.
Spaceships.
The Law. Two companies. Different decades.
Couple lethal ladies for Shadows of Brimstone.
A significant project for the summer. Twin Wraithknights. Still pleased with these two.
Some Pit Slaves for Necromunda. Should play that again.
Another KD model. The Watcher. Really need to keep KD in the rotation.
Elric and another green base,
Eldar ladies in the house tonight.
And one more big model, Velma 2.0.
Also explored printing minis in color. A lot, as it turned out.
Tested the idea with this Wraithknight inspired by JoshInJapan's love of my neon orange filament.
And grew into an army.
Managed to get some Zoats in.
And started another army.
That's about it. There were some Ice and Fire minis on there, at some point. Can't recall how many, and they don't look like much. Really, the bases are the best bit. Some fun stuff in there. Not a ton of minis, but some were pretty big. And steady (ish). So, what's next?
Something from here for January. Should finish the Twilight Cloak I started in October. And the Mandos I have left. Three or four, including Din Djarin. Then it's Web Warriors. More KD. Maybe Confrontation? Plenty to do.
Happy New Year, Dakka. Thanks for the comments. Thanks for the inspiration. And, as always, thanks for looking!

Slow going, as usual for this time of year. A little progress on Samus and the boats. Tau, too. Hit a snag, there. Printer took a fat dump with a major clog. Going to be some effort to sort that out.
I have enough parts made for 3 XV84's, but that's it. Always plenty to do. Thanks for looking!

Started the actual painting on Samus. Still quite a bit of work ahead.
And assembled the first XV84.
Two more with burst cannons on the way.
Also, a late Xmas gift from a supportive friend who didn't do the reading.
Yup. That's freakin' Farsight. His new mini is pretty darn sweet. Sadly, I will have to paint it all myself. Sort of counter to the whole idea of, you know, not painting. However, as the lead mini for the Eldar was not only painted, but converted, I suppose it will not be that big a deal. And it's a really cool model I would never have bought or painted, otherwise. I have a Krootox and the dude from BSF around here, too, I think, so they may get lumped in with these guys. Break up all that red. About time. If I still have the Krootox, it's the one I bought back in 3rd edition when I delusionally bought a Tau army and thought I would build and paint it. Spoiler: I did neither.
Thanks for looking!

Post by: Nevelon
The only thing that stopped my from picking up a Tau army back in 3rd was I wanted to play them the same way I was going with my Eldar. Mechanized infantry with tank backup, with a few special units in support. And did I need 2 armies like that? Of course, I don’t think anyone actually plays Tau like that. It’s battlesuits and stompy mecha all the way down. Still, a fun little army.
I think for your print and paint armies it would be nice to have one or two highlight/centerpiece elements. You get the enjoyment of painting the things you want for it, but not the slog of dragging 2,000 points across the workbench.

The printed Eldar look great, such a neat idea and as other have said, a step up from the grey! It’s kinda wierd how the tau look more toy like though, perhaps it’s the red filament?

Thanks, Nev and gobert!
Yeah, I agree, Nev. Even trying to not paint an army, I have to at least paint something. Just won't feel right, otherwise.
Feels like it has been a minute. Finished the Black Ark. Looks ok from about 8 feet away. Really struggled this month. Seems to be a thing for me, as last January was highly unproductive, as well. Winter doldrums, my birthday (today) and real life drag me down and kill the momentum I seem to build in December. Enough whining. Pic! Just one, because this thing only has one good angle.
So that's done. Need to get it together and finish some stuff. Decide on a model for February. Surprise is the topic. Guess I could pick anything, because the way I feel now, I'll be surprised if I get anything done.
Thanks for looking!

The Black Ark looks great to me. The enormous skull is particularly nice. You should do more skeletons.
