Hey, all. Thank you for the comments and compliments.
Boss Salvage, that would be the Lupucide, I believe. Amazing names, this game had. Havoc Staffs and Shock Rods. Yeesh. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the minis.
Maharg, no problem. I normally don't stray beyond standard basing, myself. These guys are pretty much a throwaway project so I was comfortable experimenting. Who knows if they will even get used.
Work continues. Assembled a few more Relic Knights figures, which I neglected to take pics of, a couple more Demonics, and put some more paint on the Knight. Vision is also nearing completion, and the Griffon has been started. Some WiP shots.
Enlarged to show texture. Like your cereal.
The guy from the drill team has no mask. You can see what I was saying about the eyes. He has none.
And since I hear a voice whispering somewhere in the background, a squad of Fire Dragons has moved to the desk. They have been in this state since the transition from 2nd to 3rd. Looks like they might get finished finally.
Plenty going on. Slow progress is still progress. Thanks for looking!

Liking the progress on your knight, it’s looking nicely worn and ancient.
What’s the plan with th fire dragons? Straight up yellow or yellow through red to black like smouldering coal?

Thanks, guys.
Planning mostly yellow body, chestnut wash, dark red helmet, black guns like the Warp Spiders with brass nozzles.

The knight is looking great, lovely grimy, tarnished metal.
Also happy to see those original Fire Dragons there - even though I've bought the newer ones in my ebay trawling I've always had a huge soft spot for the originals. They certainly hold up a lot better than most other models of a similar age. Look forward to seeing what you do with them.

I love the way you decided to paint your knight, just working on the skeletal structure like that is really smart and let's you just go to town on it without worrying about other pieces getting in the way. I'm digging the worn metal looks you have going on too, looks well used. If you don't mind my asking what was your technique for weathering this guy?
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thank you very much for the comments, all.
IF, the metal areas are first primed black, then drybrushed sloppily with P3 Molten bronze, then stippled sloppily with a craft store bronze that is a lighter shade. After that it is drybrushed with Army Painter Plate Mail Metal. Then you hit recessed areas or areas you want some grime build-up with Agrax or Nuln Oil, feel free to get streaky or sloppy here, as well. Next there is a patchy stipple with Citadel Chestnut ink for the rust spots. Finally sponge dings with Vallejo German Grey. The key, I believe, is to just keep building the surface.
Slow progress, but Vision is done, so it is varnish and basing time for him. Will probably hold off as the next 2 Demonics are also close to being done. Will have pics then. Thanks again for the compliments!

Thx for the breakdown youwashock. I only use GW paints as they are the easiest for me to get but I'm sure I can find the analogs within my collection. If anything it's a good guide I can use as a basis for my own technique. Thanks man.

Love the metal work on the Knight, great that you have a technique down for such an excellent weathered effect.

Thanks, ListenToMeWarriors. WD 124 and 127 will always hold a special place in gaming history for me.
Yeah, Theo, sometimes it seems like there is no easy way around it.
Been working, slowly. Also had a chance to indulge the easiest part of the hobby, acquiring more models! Hit the semi-annual swap meet at Great Escape Games last weekend. Always cool to see the stuff all out for perusal and haggling over prices. Picked up a few things.
Some gems here. Ultraforge sexy demon and Red Lioness are lovely finds, especially at bargain prices. Enforcers are currently planned to serve as black ops counterparts to the Sedition Wars Samaritans, because I am doing so much with those figures right now...
Guess I play Dreadball now. Who am I kidding. At least I may paint some of the models. They look like fun.
The most surprising find was this guy. A kindly old gentleman was selling loose minis for a buck a pop. My last dollar found this 1999 Demonic with Flamer and Tech-fist, a model I have never seen in real life. Happy day! Missing the backpack, but I can find something I am sure.
On to painted stuff. Progress on Knight, Dragons, and Suicide Queen, but not pic-worthy yet. Finished Vision and two more Demonics. Demonics came out just fine. Fun models, fit with the others. Vision is a mixed bag. Things I like, things I don't. Cape came out ok. But he is done and that just leaves Cap and Thor and then this odd task I have set for myself will be finished.
And a good look at the radar screen.
Thanks for looking! Hope to have more soon!

Thank you very much, all. Greatly appreciated.
ListenToMeWarriors, sadly Vision is not a Knight Models figure. He is a repainted Heroclix figure. This whole Avengers project was born out of the frustration of NOT being able to get hild of the KM figures when the game went OOP.
A few bits of WiP to show. Dragons are still going, so I have a shot of the one that is furthest along, but still very much unfinished, and a bit of work on the Knight, heat stressed stacks and some kneepads. The rest of the armor plates will receive a similar treatment.
And lastly, a (hopefully) quick project inserted into the schedule. Shadows of Brimstone has caught on pretty strong with my game group, with one guy buying everything he can get his hands on and late pledging the current KS, and another guy buying a couple core sets and some expansions. It is a fun game, with serviceable models and a few standouts, like the honkin' big dragon and not-Cthulhu. Thankfully, I already own a couple honkin' big dragons and not-Cthulhus, so I don't feel compelled to add any of their figures to my collection. Unfortunately, I do like to feel at least a little invested in the games I play, so as I have been playing the Assassin and wanted a model with a little more curb appeal, I traded for Suspect 7 and will now have a couple to choose from. Looking to get these out fast, basic black costume and skin and hair and done. Really wanted to have them done by Friday, but due to life making it's lifey moves, I have only assembled, based and primed so far.
Also finished Suicide Queen and almost done with her bike but could not get a decent pic for nothin' so I gave up until I can get her in the lightbox. All the pics last night were giving me a hassle. I blame sunspots.
Thanks for looking!

Always a treat coming back here, so much different stuff going on. Fire Dragon is coming on nicely, looking forward to the whole squad. New demonics look great, particularly the heavy weapons guy with the radar. I'm most looking forward to that knight though, it's going to be awesome when it's done
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, Maharg. I hope to be able to focus more on the Knight and Dragons over the next couple weeks. Time has been even shorter than usual. Busy with life, but got a few models finished.
First up is Suicide Queen, finally done after being started about two years ago.
Weird model to take pictures of. Not really a good angle to be had. But she's done and now her poor doggie can finally get that bone.
Also finished up two of the three ninja girls for use in Shadows of Brimstone. Wanted these done in a week, took closer to three. Just no time to make a whole lot of progress, but a little is always better than none. Working with these gals and the Dreadball models has reminded me how much I love this plastic. In that I don't. Could be worse, but this generation of models is being done no favors by it. Quick, serviceable paintjobs, models are fun, decent sculpts, still deciding what to do with the third model from the set, that for some reason looks very different and has an atrocity for a head and a sprig for a sword.
And a shot of one of the ladies in-game, leading the charge against a Goliath. Party dropped all of its buffs as soon as it stuck its head out of the portal. Add in some favorable dice and the poor thing never stood a chance.
Thanks for looking!

What is this? Soda pop miniatures with faces . The few I’ve seen have all had far to little detail for anyone to do a decent paint up. Well done
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thank you very much, everyone! Glad you like them.
Yeah, Relic Knights was a real mixed bag, quality wise. As far as faces go you really need a light touch, or be ready to just fill in the blanks yourself.
Painted a little. Dreadball guys this time. These went pretty fast for me, and I hope to keep that up and get my teams done and out of the way for more involved projects like the Knight. But they are fun little models and make for a satisfying diversion. Material aside. LOVE those mold lines. Pics.
Agent 88 and a Jack for my human team, the LexxCorp Kryptonites, or 'Nites for short. 88 was one of the models that almost got me to pledge for the initial KS. Just dig the model, so he gets to be a Striker stand-in. Wildcard is the other model I really liked, and she is being painted now. Using the MVP models breaks up the look of the team a bit. And if I wind up playing the game much I figure my opponents won't mind the off-team models. Need to get these guys done, then it is time for space turtles. Also put in some time on the Knight and the Dragons and even laid a little more putty on the Avatar. Progress is progress.
Thanks for looking and thank you again for the compliments!

You have really brought out detail on those Dreadball minis, which is amazing having owned some I remember them having very limited detail. As for the material, yep restic mold lines are (well were, have not dealt with it for a while) an absolute pain to clean and even spot before you have laid some paint down. I think my favourite thing about the Dreadball range as a whole are the clear hex bases and the big guy players.

You know what I need? More projects! Decided I wanted some more Zoats. Saw some offered here, but it was a little too rich for me so I hit eBay and found a lot of 6 that was willing to take what I was willing to pay. Maybe should have taken a closer look at the pictures, because after I got them it became rather apparent at least 4 of them were recasts. 4 came with paint on them, and those four had extra mold lines, softer detail, and downright slag in some areas. They shared common defects, and had mold lines in places that authentic models did not. Sadface. However, I was able to get a datisfactory amount of money back after discussing the situation with the seller, and since I had already spent a decent amount of time stripping and cleaning these things, by thunder I will make them work. Part of the plan is to convert a unique leader, since there is not a whole lot of variety in the range. Here's his parts after a taste of the Dremel.
Too many models, too little time. Hope to knock these guys out quick, too. Thanks for looking! Shop smart!

He should crush some opponents on the dreadball field. Will you have enough for a full team? If so which faction would they stand in for? Terratons perhaps. I’ll know they are old rogue trader models, but I find it fun to use GW models in a game that’s a GW knockoff .
Greenstuff looks good and primer hides any imperfections, which I don’t see any.
Also my son has started to call his cat Thanos now since the second infinity war movie .

LTMW, I was a little salty, for sure. But I will make of it what I can. I won't likely be reselling, so I won't have to keep it in mind to add a disclaimer that part of my collection is bogus.
A little progress. Started a couple zoats, but they aren't much to look at yet. Real life has reared it's its ugly, intrusive, hobby-disrupting head in a big way. But I push on. Dreadball stuff today. A guard and jack for the 'Nites, and an MVP who is most likely going to stand in for a guard on the Teraton team, as I have somehow wound up with an imbalance between guards and jacks. Figure an enhanced armored guy will fit in ok with the big turtles. Maybe I will call him Champion. Stopped short of painting a glowing purple hand.

Stuff happening. Lots of jumping around. Finished Wildcard for Dreadball, but no pics until after varnishing. Three more models and the human team is done. And some cheerleaders. And a coach. Ok, they are almost done. Some WiP shots.
Zoats.
Flaming shins. Sounds like a band.
My stack of DB stuff did not include a ref. Since I like this model but had no real use for it, he's my guy. Looking for a black with grey edgelights, some red. Nice threatening refbot.
Figured out what to do with the last ninja girl. New head, old ponytail, new claws, old tengu mask cut off and stuck to the belt. Thinking about calling them the Oishiikage ninja clan.
And now to the interesting stuff. Been feeling a ton of curiosity about Contrast, and went and did this:
I bought Space Hulk 1st ed when it came out, and 2nd marked down many years later. Never painted the Genestealer. Tried, but never found a way I liked that could be done quickly. Seems like a good time to try again. Test models primed:
And a start:
I think it will work when it is done. I figure in the time it would normally take to basecoat, the model is almost done. Jury still out, and I am curious to see how the marine goes, but I am optimistic.
More soon. As always, thanks for looking!

Curious how your Space Hulk stuff turns out as well. Gives me hope I can slop some contrast on my old unpainted masses and finally put some of that stuff to use.
Flaming Shins though... I think the Flaming Lips actually toured with the Shins one year. Are you having concert flashbacks?
89168
Post by: youwashock
Wow. Thank you all very much for the comments and compliments.
LTMW, I wound up shooting for an approximation of an older version of my Angels of Truth scheme. I am still a little skeptical of how it worked out, but the first Terminator is done and waiting for varnish.
Snrub, layers and patience are the best tips I can offer. Like the worn metals, it is all about building the layers.
Highlord, perhaps...
Made some progress. Flames are done on the shins, finished refbot and Striker (named Orchid Omega, I won't be using her as Wildcard at first, if at all.) Have settled on Holt Kazed as a name for my version of Number 88 as well.
Added some dreads to Blaine, or in my case acting-coach Kev Yautja. Also finished the test 'Stealer. I feel much better about him than the Terminator. We will see how I feel after painting a group of them. Pretty sure I just need to work with the Contrast a bit more. On the whole I like them. It is hard to not buy a bunch and dive into a bunch of "quick" projects hoping they will make it faster. Should probably pump my brakes. But all my Foundry Nymphs would be so easy with a bottle of Gulliman...
Pics.
And fluff:
"Well, fans, it looks like the Lexxcorp Kryptonites are a little sore about last year's loss in the finals to the Men of Steel and they have brought some new talent to the field. First up is man-of-mystery Holt Kazed. Nobody knows where he came from, nobody even knows what he looks like. What we do know is he is dynamite out there on the field and his moves are strangely similar to martial arts practiced by the priests of Pama and the monks of K'un L'un. His partner in crime (so to speak) is another rookie who goes by Omega Orchid. Like Kazed, her skills are undoubtable, her past is a mystery, but her blue-in-blue eyes suggest Arrakeen descent. Now, after what she did to the last interviewer who asked a little too pointedly about where she was from I know I won't be bringing it up, but there are whispers she could even be a Fish Speaker. Seeing as how they have not been spotted off-world for decades, that would really be a coup for Lexxcorp and may be the edge they need to finally clinch a championship!"

MegaDave, I didn't go back and highlight any contrast-painted areas. It is probably just that the model is lit better in the finished pics. I found that the Terminator looked better in stronger light, too. Will have some pics of him soon-ish. And hopefully the rest of the Dreadball team.

Looks like you went for the same nid contrast colours as I did. I think that dark blue one works really well - it creates some nice edge highlight effects and is dark enough to mask any pooling of the paint. I have found that it rubs off the model fairly quickly though, I used the model in a game over the weekend and the carapace points have already started to come off. Definitely needs a good varnish, more so than normal paints
Love the knight so far, flames and skulls look great. Can't wait to see it finished

Yup, Maharg. Your bug sold me on those two colors, for sure. I hit my models with a coat of gloss and two light coats of dullcote. I wonder if it will be enough to protect metal models.

Thank you! I hope it all works out in the end.
Finished up the hoo-mans for Dreadball. Except for the coach. And the cheerleaders. The players are done. They were fun. And didn't really take a ton of time.
While I was painting the male Guard, my daughter came over and said, "he looks like Baymax." Coincidently, I had a Guard that was going to waste since I had gone for a gender-mix on my team. A little prep, which involved cleaning the mold lines the previous owner left, and a lick of Contrast, and he was done in no time.
Not winning any awards, but it is another mini done, a little bit of fun, and it went fast.
And to wrap up, the Terminator for Space Hulk, painted primarily with Contrast paints. Worked ok. Could have gone lighter in some areas. Can't really keep working these paints. Need to get them down and move on.
I figure they will do. And they are done. Again for not a lot of time invested compared to what it would have taken using a different method. Have 4 more 'Stealers prepped. Turtles and a coach on deck. More Knight. Eldar. Plenty to do.
Thanks for looking!

Nice work on the dreadball team, they look really nice.
That genestealer still looks great, but it looks like the contrasts don’t work quite as well on flat surfaces to me. That said your (homebrew?) chapter colours work well together and the hazard stripes look great!

youwashock,
Was the Genestealer done with contrast paint?
Cheers,

89168
Post by: youwashock
Primarily, yes, Captain. The blue and the pink are Contrast. Single coat over a semi-zenithal prime job. Then the large claws, toes and eyes and tongue are regular paint. Also a Nuln wash in the mouth and eye sockets.
Thanks for the comments, guys.
I agree, gobert. The next Terminator I need to be careful about how the Contrast goes on the smoother areas.

I agree with the others that the genestealer with the contrast paints turned out awesome, especially for using only a single contrast coat! That’s an example that clearly lived up to the hype. Keep it up.

I've been struggling with large flat areas with contrast too, though I think it has given a nice aging effect on the terminator body. Shoulder pads less so.

Nothing has been done since my last post. At the beginning of July I developed what has since been diagnosed as degenerative disc disease. I have a compressed disc which may or may not be leaking fluid causing what one doctor referred to as "considerable inflammation." My left leg has been traded in for a block of wood filled wirh hot needles. Sitting for prolonged periods isn't in the cards. So I can't paint. Spending a lot of time laying down and going to physical therapy. I hope to give painting a try soon. Maybe this week. The sooner the better, as far as I am concerned.

Thank you, Cam, Maharg, Fifty, Ezki, gobert, and Captain, I appreciate the well-wishes.
In health news, I am showing improvement. Comparatively speaking, much improvement. Not perfect (at all), but good enough to sit and paint for a bit, which is a game changer. Just need to finish bases and there will be pics. Nothing major, but I used the downtime to go through some older nonsense projects and the unpainted masses and so I have wrapped up a few, redefined others, and s-canned a couple more. The catharsis is welcome, and it makes room for new nonsense projects. Since I couldn't paint or build, I figured it would be a good idea to buy a bunch of Wrath of Kings not-wolfen so I could do...something. Not sure what beyond painting at this point. I can put them on the shelf next to all the unpainted real wolfen.
Anyway, thanks again, guys. I am shakily back in the saddle, and hope to have something new to share in the next few days.

Snake Eyes
After watching the video on hasbro and the making of GIJoe I learned the original Snake Eyes was all black not out of design, but they only had so much budget for the first wave of models and so one model had to be monochrome .

Post by: youwashock
Well, a little later than I thought, but I am back. Life and all that. Today we have the recovery models. These two were started years ago, and finally run through the brushes after I dumped off one of the in-progress shelves in the frustration of not being able to work. The Noh was begun not long after the first KS delivered (the Noh portion of my pledge has since been liquidated), and has sat mostly basecoated since. Snake-Eyes was converted out of a Taskmaster Heroclix figure (yeah, more clix), primed and left, again for years. Now they can sit on a different shelf. Nothing amazing, but they're done, and soon I hope they have new company.
Two down, untold legions to go. Thank you again for the support and well-wishes, and as always, thanks for looking.

Correct. This version has the hood down, so all I had to do was add the visor in GS. Then I added a few bits of gear from an IG sprue and a Catachan blade to replace the warped clix one. Prime and set on a shelf for a few years, and voila!

I'll have plenty of time to be serious when I'm dead.
Youwashock, you really did do a good job on the Snake Eyes piece; it's very hard to make a color scheme that is, essentially all black, look good. The shading is hard to get right so that the impression of overall 'blackness' remains, even though some of the highlights may be light grey or even white.
Very well done, simple and straight forward, belying the skill to get it right.
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thank you, everybody!
Meer_Cat, first, you rule. Second, I once saw a shirt that said knowing was half the battle and the other half was spilt equally between red lasers and blue lasers. And C, truthfully there is less down to skill on that black and more down to Black Templar Contrast.
Working still. Have some space lizards, a samurai bear, and some completely random stuff on the go, plus all the other partially completed projects.
89168
Post by: youwashock
And speaking of a couple of the random projects...
One of the projects cut during my recent bout of sciatica-related purging was a conversion of an old Heroclix model into the character Pitt. A 90's Image Comics Hulk knock-off with claws. You probably shouldn't read it, it was terrible. There was an ad in the back of one of the issues selling a pewter model of the character. This was a long time ago, and mail-ordering the thing wasn't something that interested me at the time. Years passed, Heroclix came out, it seemed like a thing to do. It never really seemed like it was going to work out in a satisfactory way, and I finally pulled the plug after several years of wishy-washing. Ebay, though, had the answer, perhaps the one I should have chosen in the first place:
A little funky, but it was 1995, after all. Moved straight from the mailbox to the desk and on the fast (ish) track to being done.
And next we have a model I didn't know I needed but had to own once I found out about it:
A Greater Fire Elemental from the Dragyri in Dark Age. In limited edition scarlet (ish) resin. Never bought any Dark Age minis before. Game always had intriguing models, but there was always something else to buy and not paint. I am a sucker for monsters, however, and a bigger sucker for clear plastic. And he should be pretty easy to paint in a fashion I can live with. He's in a race with Pitt to see who gets finished first.
Distractions, yes. But hey, I am getting rid of a fair few models and these guys make good replacements. Also finished a few others, and after they are based and varnished they'll show their scaly hides. Thanks for looking!
110309
Post by: ListenToMeWarriors
Glad that you are on the road to recovery. Pitt looks great, I hear 1995 and do not think of it as nigh on 25 years ago and to be fair the miniature does not look it either. Any idea who produced it?
Dark Age is something I know basically nothing about, but the scarlet (ish) resin beastie looks cool. You can never have too many models!
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, man. Pitt was made by Heartbreaker. According to the bottom of the base it was sculpted by a guy named Phil. At least I think that was what it said. I got it for a lot less than most of the others listed for sale. I was worried that I had snapped up another recast since it didn't include the package or card/CoA, but if it is a recast they went all out as it had all the correct info inscribed on the bottom of the base according to pics I found online.

Pitt was always awesome. You know it to be true in your heart of hearts. I always liked Dale Keown's Hulk art too. He did a nice job on the Darkness later on as well.
I never knew the mini actually existed. I remember those adds too!
You'll enjoy your Dragyri. The whole faction are big crazy monsters. All the elementals are pretty cool. You ought to try and find the clear Ice elemental. The shadow caste are pretty impressive as well.

I worked at two different Comic book stores during the whole Image Comic book series release and Pitt was not a huge draw. Five Oni soldiers barred the way, their eyes as sharp as their blades.
His path was blocked.
The bear closed his eyes.
In the voice of the leaves, he heard his master's last words to him.
"Promise me, Pooh-san, that you will always remember: you're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
The bear unclosed his eyes.
His path was clear.
The panda from Rum & Bones with a new sword. Love this model. Sat on the shelf primed for far too long.
And two of the new Zoats are done, bringing the Space Zoats even with the Fantasy Zoats. The three still to be painted will hopefully soon see the space lizards take the lead.

Theo, your puns are nearly un-bear-able.
Contrast is right, Cap'n. He is almost entirely done in Contrast paints.
Nev, they say it's the spice. I do jump around a lot, and I enjoy the freedom of having no one game imposing a demand on painting time, but I wonder if productivity suffers as a result. I figure the answer is to keep painting and see.
A little progress on the fire elemental. Despite washing the resin was still looking to repel paint. A little dullcote and we were back in business.
And a giant distraction appears!
Belial from Shadows of Brimstone. I had passed on this model multiple times, but my friend bought two by accident, including this already assembled version with custom wings, and seeing it in person was enough to get me to take it off his hands. They look like cut down Bloodthirster wings to me, but I could be wrong. Hope to give him a quick but adequate paint job and get back to regularly scheduled nonsense.

A little bit of what is going on. Primed white, then washed with Nuln Oil. The Dementor was done more selectively, as you can see, rather than all over as with the Sister.
Then I drybrushed white over the upper areas and painted the undersides black.
Then I hit him with the Black Templar. The idea is that treating the surface this way will squeeze a little more contrast out of the Contrast. I did a little of this on some areas on Pooh. I plan to paint neater white areas on the Sister for a little smoother finish, and tint the black some with the turquoise, but the Dementor is a rough model anyway so I went with just a drybrush there.
Also painted a bit of light purple around the mouth before the Templar. Afterward I painted the mouth with a blue glow and a touch of Rotting Flesh on the hands. Overall the black shows the pre-shading, but it is pretty subtle. Subtle enough that I don't know yet if it was worth it. Need to varnish, base and take real pictures. It should be more apparent with colors other than black.
Thanks for looking.
30672
Post by: Theophony
Great work.
I too think that some of the contrasts really need extra help with some undertones by preshading. It's what I did with my tree folk by hitting them with agrax before the contrast. Still playing with some other effects with the contrast paints.
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, Theo.

Post by: gobert
The Sister and Dementor are coming along nicely. The sisters face looks really good, I especially like the shave part of her head. How’d you do that so nicely? Was it just a blend to grey at the hairline?
89168
Post by: youwashock
Thanks, gobert!
Since she was released right around the same time as Contrast, I planned to paint her as much as I could using those paints. Her head is separate because I didn't want to get it with the dark preshading, and also so I can paint it without worrying about fiddling with surrounding areas. Painting unassembled is not something I regularly do, but with things like this or the Knights I think it is worth it. Anyway, primed white, hit the hair with a brushed white to make sure it was opaque, then hit the hair and scalp with Apothecary White. After that was dry I gave her skin a coat of Gulliman Flesh. The grey showed through just a little, so went back over it with a couple thin coats of Apothecary White, thinning it out at the edges. A few thin white highlights in the hair were next. Then a dab of Agrax in the eye sockets and across the lipline. Need to paint the eyes, wire, and plug but the head is pretty much done.

Pics of finished stuff. First the Dementor. Cool model, quickly painted, works well enough, I guess. Kissy-kissy in the face pic.
Up next is Pitt. Fun model. Older style, certainly, but it has that charm you see in models from 20 years ago. And there's something about the weight of a metal model and the sound it makes when it slips from your hand and bangs into your water mug.
Side view since you can't see his eyes from the front.
Third and final Kunoichi of the Oishiikage ninja clan.
And last, but not least, the Dragyri Fire Elemental.
Griffon is done, also finished a batch of rats from BONES I that I basecoated years ago. Zoat, Sister, etc. in progress.

Yorkright, while it is highly improbable that I will have an army, I do really want a "classic" Sister squad (6-10 models, Sister Superior, flamer/meltagun, heavy bolter) to stand on the shelf with the rest of my Imperials.
Adding more color now.
Thanks for looking!

I like the way this sister is shaping up, though the shade seems to be pooling up a bit on her arms (?).

Nice work on the sister. Though I like the black, I’m gutted you changed from the white. How’d get to the black? I’m guessing a series of washes to take benefit from the shaded and highlighted whites?
The gunmetal black on the combi-melta is very realistic too, as is the heat damage on the meltan muzzle

Post by: youwashock
Thank you very much, everybody.
Yorkright, the last time I played 40K was probably 4 years ago or so. We played 3rd edition. I will play it again, I am sure, just not sure when. Miniature games are tough for my group. Space and time considerations.
Gobert, the black is a single coat of a roughly 50/50 mix of Black Templar and Leviadon Blue contrast paints over the shaded white.
Thanks again! Pics soon of more stuff.

Thank you so much, everyone!
Gobert, still have all the parts you can't see. Arms, shoulders, carapace, head. Working on the stubbers, now.
Yorkright, you got this. All you need is a Micron, a steady hand, and 5 or 6 deep breaths to stop the shakin'.
Pics of various finished things.
First off, some BONES rats from KS1. Throw-away, vending machine quality mooks to get maybe get exterminated someday in Mordheim. Glad to have them done, but they aren't much to look at. Killing me to match the green bases from older models. Same with the Space Zoats.
And a shot with the big 3 from my Skaven band, painted...a long time ago.
Speaking of Zoats...
Two more to go.
Another BONES KS1 model far overdue for finishing. The Griffon this time, one of the better models from early BONES days, once you address his tendency to use his beak as a kickstand. Known amongst the other models in the cabinet as Razorcloud the Black Bolt, He Whose Cry Splits the Heavens. I think his eyes came out nice.
And last, but not least, Sister Superior Noctis Venatari of the Adepta Sororitas. And a bonus shot with a fellow defender of the Imperium.
Also a couple quick pics of upcoming models. Still have the Knight going. And some Dreadball dinos. And 2 Zoats. And now these guys and gals. A few fantasy ladies, and two Assassins that I decided I needed to own, since my old ones look a little shrimpy next to the rest of the Imperial models.
Gotta keep paintin'. And as always: Thanks for looking!

Sister Superior Noctis Venatari Looks amazing. Love the simple but effective conversion work, and the paintjob is (unsurprisingly) brilliant. I also adore how the Knight is turning out. Can’t beat a good flame effect, and by jove is it a good one you’ve got going!

Wow. Thank you, everyone. I am glad to see so much positive response. I really appreciate it.
Been a rough week for hobby time. Super busy. However, the assassins are finally built and primed. Callidus had a little texture in places for some reason. Strange as Culexus does not, and was primed at the same time. Should be workable, but irritating nonetheless. Going to go for the preshaded contrast on these again.
Replacing all 4 assassins would be cost-prohibitive, so I picked my favorite two and found acceptable deals on eBay. Think I should take a pic of the original 4, just for the record and to show how tiny they look now. Still great models, though.
Thanks again, and thanks for looking.

If you’re doing the same black as the sister they’re going to look ace! Intrigued by the height difference, is it just their scenic bases making the difference or do they stand taller anyway?

Gimme a head with hair. Long, beautiful hair... Yeah, Theo, it's a little much.
Gobert, the tactical rubble gives them a bit of presence, but they are overall taller. I'll get that comparison pic soon. Not a ton of time to paint this weekend, but got some work in.
Little WiP of Belit from the Conan boardgame. Going with some more color on the underlayer, see if it has any visible effect.

Seems like a sound theory. It's gotta go somewhere.
Quick pic of the older Assassins. On one hand they look "ok", and on the other they look like trick-or-treating kids. More green bases. It was the 90's. Left them glossy because synskin. Seemed like a good idea at the time. May have to fix that.

Post by: youwashock
Thanks, guys! I am happy with her hair, as well. Fairly simple, Snakebite contrast over unshaded white, then a few highlights of Menoth base (I think, a bone color), then washed with old Chestnut ink.
Forgot a pic of a conversion I finally finished thanks to Cap'n Brown and his Oldcromunda posting. This guy sat for far too long waiting for arms. A Pit Slave, mostly machine, looking to get back at those who made him fight for so long. A mentor to the gang leader during her time in the arena. One step closer to completion.
Assassins are mostly done. Just painting their base decorations then it's varnish time. Thanks for looking!

Theo, it's a whammer, for sure!
gobert, the leader will be purple-ish, but the darker one is dark green washed with purple prepping to be brought up to green.
Finished pics. First Belit, Pirate Queen of the Black Coast. From Monolith's Conan boardgame, or more accurately, one of the artist boxes from the KS. The King Conan one. She should be paler. Eh. Also, all the DC going on lately had me looking at her as Diana in some gladiatorial situation.
And now for the new Assassins. A love for Imperial Assassins going back to Jaku Dihardis and Tarik Gortsuker in Chapter Approved gets new life in the latest versions of my two favorite temples. First up, the Callidus, Nine-Wraith-Alpha.
And then the Culexus, One-Dragon-Omicron. I thought the new Assassins were rad when they were released in WD, but when the Culexus came out at the end of 2nd with Codex:Assassins, my mind was blown. Glad to have a reason to update this soulless maniac.
Bonus pics of the Animus Speculum, because it has a ton of detail.

Thank you, everybody! Comments much appreciated.
Cap'n, to quote Donald Sutherland, "It's a distinct possibility."
Theo, it's because he knows he isn't really worthy...
After far too long, the Zoats are done.
The hall was eerily silent. Two Eldar Seers stood before the Webway portal, each staring intently for signs of their visitors' arrival.
"They are late," spoke the male.
"Patience, Fiannadar, " spoke the woman at his side, her voice a touch removed from annoyance. "They will arrive in plenty of time."
"But, Farseer Malaethe, we do not have much time left to before Khaine rises. We cannot tarry waiting for these mercenaries. Our preparations must be complete."
"They will be. We will prevent the mon-keigh from spoiling the Lilaethan. We will minimize the loss of Eldar lives. We will... Look."
The runes framing the portal blazed with light and its surface rippled like a pool of water disturbed by a slight breeze. From its depths stepped a group of six massive reptillian forms escorted by a small group of Rangers. Each strode forward on four thick legs and a powerfully muscled torso sat upright above the front-most pair. Each wore a kind of rebreather or mask, and they held a mix of strange weapons that looked as organic as they did technological. Their scaled hides were a mix of greens, with the exception of the first to step through, who was purple in color, the scales lightening around the face and chest. He (presumably) carried a weapon in his right hand and his left fist was encased in a large gauntlet, upon which set five roughly-hewn gems of different colors. They surveyed the chamber calmly as the portal behind them again went dormant. The purple creature looked down Warlock Fiannadar for a moment, his single visible eye narrowing for a moment before he turned to the Farseer.
"I am Jugger Grimlock. Herd-Thane of the Cantus Wastes of Lothal. I am told you have a proposition for us." The creature's voice was low and rumbling, filled with age and authority.
"Yes," spoke Malaethe. "We, the Eldar of Sceariyuden Craftworld have heard tell of your strength, and combat prowess. Also of your determination and tenacity in completing a contract. We..."
"I have been told. You wish for us to stand with you in your coming conflict. A conflict in which you feel that you need our aid. Arrogant Eldar asking for help against the wave of Mankind that threatens to drown your precious Maiden World. Nothing with you pointed-ears is ever that simple."
Fiannadar's mouth hung open. He had never heard anyone address his superior in this fashion.
The Farseer bristled at the interruption. "Let me speak as simply as I can. Lord Grimlock, our Craftworld is small, and the forces arrayed against us great. We cannot let this world fall to the humans. We need your strength to support us. Is that simple enough?" The corner of her mouth turned up in a smirk.
"No. You hide something. Your witch-sight is strong. You seek to conceal something about this conflict. My own witch-sight is also strong." The Zoat flexed his left hand and the stones set upon it glowed. A wave of outward psychic pressure made the Farseer furrow her brow as if in intense concentration. The Warlock stepped back half a pace.
"You dare..." Fiannadar gripped his staff tightly. "Wait, what is this? Those gems...this energy...waystones? How?" He turned to Malaethe, indignation upon his face.
"Five of your kind, wanderers like the ones that brought us here. They fought by our side." The Zoat's voice was far away. "The battle went poorly. Your nemesis, the opponent. No hope for their survival, for the enemy burned the air with poison around the gateways, but not strong enough to kill us. Left on the field, they could not allow their spirits to be. They asked me to take them. Return them if we could. But their worldship was broken. So I have kept them, as I have sworn. They channel my witch-sight, I soon found. Make it clearer. Let me see through the mists you would conjure. And more."
"This is sacrilege! An abomination! Farseer, how can we let this savage...?"
The Zoat leader continued, "There is something upon this world that you want more than the world itself. Something the humans cannot have. And there is more. Your dark kin know. They make ready for war. You fear they will find it. The battle will be terrible with them involved. Carnage. Losses sure to be grievous. You need our strength, and you need us to serve as a buffer against the other Eldar while you see to your true agenda. Pointed-ears, think they are so different from each other. Only the ones with the pretty-lights speak plain, even if it always sounds like riddles."
Fiannadar spoke, "We know you have served our cousins in Commoragh. We also know that your loyalty is bought, Zoat. You can accept their offer, act as if you serve them, but when the time comes, turn your weapons against them. We can compensate you handsomely of this."
"Betrayal paves a short road, Seer. My people are also not great in number. I would not turn traitor and sour the arrangements between us and your kin. We have enemies enough. If we fight at your side, it will be in full view of all who oppose you. Knives in the back are your province, not ours. We will send word of our decision. Two revolutions of Lothal." The Zoat turned to go.
"Wait! You cannot just leave here with...Farseer, we can't let him take..."
Malaethe's mouth turned up again and her eyebrows lifted, "Do YOU want to try to take them?"
With that out of the way, on to the pictures:
And to commemorate finishing all the Zoats (pretty much) and for gobert, some group shots:
First the Space Zoats.
And with their WHFB brothers.
Nice to see them all together. Happy bringing paint to a conversion I was excited about. Paint at the end could have been a little tighter, but the it always seems that way seeing it all blown up. Gems worked out. Nice and vibrant. Onward to Knight and other things.

None of those models have had any Contrast applied in that picture. The Dragons won't, they will be all "regular" techniques. Same with the Chaplain. The two ladies will be Contrast, and sadly, the metallic purple areas will all be gold.

Nice chaplain. The base guy from BaC is one of my favorite recent sculpts. The hood/green cloak gives him a much different flavor. He’s the 10th company chaplain now, keeping an eye on the faith and purity of the scouts. Sure, he might not have fancy things like infiltrate and or a camo cloak, but he would look right at home moving up with some vanguard marines and beating the heresy out of the foes of mankind.
Crap, now I want to make one.

Really liking the work on the Chaplain, it is amazing what a simple head swap and updated, if slightly Chaotic, Plasma pistol can do. I am really struggling to place the head, which kit is it from?
The cloak, armour and purple plasma glow are really helping to make this a very visually interesting scheme.

I painted mine as a captain, not a chaplain. Although in hindsight, now that I have more captains than there are companies, but only have 4 chaplains, I should have done it the other way. Looking at the primaris Chaplain, he could be pressed into service for the 10th with minimal work. Since I have all the Captains, maybe I need all the Chaplains as well...
I might have a HQ problem.
(although the Librarius is on deck for the next major boost, with 3 new members in the pipeline)

None of those models have had any Contrast applied in that picture. The Dragons won't, they will be all "regular" techniques. Same with the Chaplain. The two ladies will be Contrast, and sadly, the metallic purple areas will all be gold.
Sorry, my bad! Looking at the image from the gallery they’re clearly layered

Those Fire Dragons have a lovely glow.
The chaplain also looks cool.

You really did a killer job on the chaplain the green robes and purple plasma really jump out.

Technical excellence on the Chaplain's paint job and the colour scheme is perfect in it's simplicity!

Thank you, thank you!
Nev, there are certainly worse problems to have.
Some quick WiP shots. All sorts of things happening, including work on Brother from the swamper crew for Song of Blades.
Probably should have taken a pic of the Knight now that the head is installed. After the thermal cannon, I guess. As usual, plenty going on outside the picture frames, too. So many minis, never enough time, but each one done is a victory in itself, some, like the Dragons, bigger victories than others. Can't believe they are going to be done.
Thanks for looking! Automatically Appended Next Post: Got a little bit of painting in, here is a blurry pic of LT's hair ready for a chestnut wash, which will just about be it for that.

It all is looking good, but as an old eldar player I am loving the dragons. They all have a nice fiery tone to them.

Very much agreed--even as is they're looking pretty hot.
Also very interested in that gator, its a really striking scheme, without using crazy colors. (Deleted because I realized the gator was the "brother" being refered to, still a nice model)
