That Hulk is incredible. I am impressed with the way the paint so accurately follows Hulk's musculature, and yet retains a lightness, an almost comic sense of illustration. The visible brush strokes give it an animated feel that works really well.
Nice job. It got me excited to see the rest of the models coming out, too.
Glad you like the look. Sounds like it is being read as intended (mostly. some stuff still happens by accident). I wanted a bright, comic look.
Clean, but not TOO clean.
There will be dinos eventually. A unit of riders and then a larger single model. Won't be for a bit, though. Need to finish the WG, then the next unit is dragon-cloaked infantry. Riders may come after that.
Hulk is Smashing... sorry bad pun I know! The cell shading style looks really cool on him, great work. Glad your mojo has returned, even if adulting is getting in the way of hobbying.
Motivation comes and goes.
Going trough some hobby hiatus as well. I have painted a grand total of... 5 quick tabletop minis since the end of May. The number is not likely gonna go much higher before the end of summer.
I think that both Punisher and Venom (I think? My knowledge of the comic book characters is limited) look excellent. I especially love the deep purple to pink to near white transition on the missile launcher and Venom's red tongue. They really help the miniatures pop and fit the aesthetic of the minis perfectly.
Keep in ploughing on and eventually the motivation issues will subside, ultimately this is a hobby and meant to be fun. There is nothing to gain from beating yourself up about it.
Another pair of cool minis youwashock. As LTMW pointed out the pink glow on Punishers missile launcher is really great. You must’ve been really careful with the star on the muzzle!
The time and motivation are still lacking, but I have not been entirely idle. Finished building the third WG, and inspiration struck again at work and the next hot glue creation has arrived. Tried to take progress pictures this time.
Tape pile
more tape for definition
a few sticks of hot glue
and spray black
Just needs some highlights and a liberal coat of gloss.
I also made a tiny bit of progress on Fett.
Man, that's blurry. Anyway, the backpack's got jets.
Those wraithguard are awesome, you've managed to blend the two kits seamlessly, even the posing works which, as the Kurnoth Hunters don't carry guns, makes it even more impressive.
And from the results I would have never guessed the slime monster thing was made from tape and hot glue, it's amazing!
That Fett colour looks perfect, cannot wait to see the whole thing.
The Wrairhguard kitbashes continue to look brilliant, and to make that out of just tape and glue is great. Hope that you find motivation out there somewhere YWS, you are the best.
youwashock wrote: Finished building the third WG, and inspiration struck again at work and the next hot glue creation has arrived. Tried to take progress pictures this time.
As the rest have said the wraithguard and tape/glue monster are coming up great. Hopefully they spur on the motivation to get them done. Bobbas back pack is coming along very nicely too, good and Smokey looking
Just catching up on your recent projects, wow! Amazing stuff. Those wraithguard look incredible, such a seamless conversions. The glue monster looks great too.
Best, ListenToMeWarriors? I don't know. I generally consider myself an upper-middle sort of guy.
Slime is done, just need pics. Fett is ALMOST done. Just needs a few more highlights. Working slow, though, so I wanted to pop in and say thanks. Hopefully something to show soon!
Thank you, Cam. I can't wait to see all five done. Slow painter is slow. And busy. But eventually things get done.
One large black ooze:
And with some other minis for scale:
And Boba Fett from Legion (a game I do not own and have never played, still...Fett). Color scheme inspired by his look at the end of Mando season 2. Just in time for AMG to announce they will release a new version that would be better suited for it. Oh, well.
Been a big Fett fan for a long time, but like the Knight Models Punisher, this is the first official model I have painted. Weird. I have, however, painted conversions I have made, or just borrowed the scheme. Took a pic of them together, including a conversion from a VERY long time ago.
Also this guy,
Work continues. Always plenty to do. Thanks for looking!
Paradigm wrote: Fett kooks great, but the ooze takes the cake. What an incredible finish it has! Looks like tou'd actually stick to it...
This.
Excellent work on Fett, but that ooze is something else. I looks like if you touched it it would absorb you, and if you bumped the table it would jiggle. Spot on!
Missed seeing The Ooze and some of your latest projects. I really like attention to detail you have for all the bobas and predator. That brings me to the The Ooze, it does remind me of the creature from Star Trek and you’ve done a great job painting him.
I thought I’d already commented on the ooze and boba, but I guess not! The black shiny scheme for the ooze was a perfect choice, makes him look like a blob of sticky tar out to absorb his/her enemies! The whole batch of bobas are great, but the recent one is the bees knees, lovely paint work and I feel captures the Mando era boba nicely. I look forward to you buying and painting the legit Mando Boba
It’s great to see more tree-wraiths, and that cabbage would put me off my dinner!
I had to look twice, if I read that right with the cabbage, but apparently I did That mini looks fun, excited for color on it. And not much more to add to the other comments, Fett looks great in that color scheme and that ooze is so lifelike it's scary. A bit like the black oil on the X-Files.
These Wraiths made me go out and buy some Kurnoth Hunters and get back on a Sylvaneth kick....Thanks.
I hadn't realized as i shoot through pictures so quick that the ooze was all hot glue and stuff, I seriously thought that it was some model from reaper and actually looked for it at the FLGS the other day. That should tell me to slow down and read more. Anyway, great job with the glue gun and paint work.
Well those are looking great, even if it is just a quick WIP. Those tree bodies are the sort of model that contrast works really well on, and I like the choice of colours overall, particularly the rich blue cloth.
You're welcome, Theo. Glad I could be of service. If I ever played AoS, I would be hard-pressed to not have an army of Sylvaneth, too.
Thanks for the compliments, guys. Another small WiP of a detail I am happy I put in but am still not sure is worth the trouble. Made press molds of the large gem on the back of the Wraithlord to fill the belly gap. Figure it is a shielded housing for the spirit stone. I imagine the body growing up and around it during the waking ritual. A small thing, but it changes the model up and brings a bit more Eldar to it.
Fantastic conversions on those wraithguard, the model lines blend seamlessly together! pulling of an Eldar conversion is no simple feat, the armor styles and scales are all different unit to unit but this is excellent.
I'm extremely interested to see any ideas you got along this line, keep up the great work
These wraithguard just keep getting better and better. Outstanding work. Loved that Ooze monster too. Fantastic scratch-building. Too bad I’ve already exalted!
Love the little detail - and I am a sucker for something that rarely gets seen, but when it does gives me a smile - perhaps the reason I am overwhelmed with grey plastic, but hey ho!
Thank you all for the compliments. Always appreciated.
Finished the two Wraithguard. Two more to go. Thinking in terms of units is a trap. I suppose I could have just painted one of these, and of each type of model I have planned. A collection of concepts rather than an army. Oh, well. I can hope it will look cool taking up a grip of room on the shelf when all is said and done.
I think the collective really hammers home how well the concept works. One by itself would be much less satisfying.... but perhaps that is the inner hoarder speaking!
I’ve really liked your take on the Wraiths looking forward to seeing a unit of them. As for a group shot I’m ready to raise my hand and say yes please.
Yorkie, I will definitely be getting a group shot once the last two models for this unit are done.
Completely unrelated WiP. Had a couple Marine minis kicking around in my head that I finally broke ground on. One is an update to the power armored version of the commander of my nearly nonexistent Marine army. Did a little microsurgery on his backpack. Just because, I guess. Still needs a little putty and trimming, but I had better let the glue dry.
Thank you, thank you. I will endeavor to not become YouWaShock of the Nine Fingers.
So, not much happening around here. Illness (nothing serious) and a family vacation plus holidays have all made things slow to a mere trickle. Like I was setting the world on fire before...anyway...
Nev is doing his advent posting this year. I think that is a fun idea, and with his blessing will be trying to do the same. At least it will get some pics of minis in here. Looking to get some oldies up, as well. Stuff I have not posted here before. But first...
Spoiler:
Let's kick things off with a Zoat. Why? Because I love Zoats. This definitely won't be the last one here. I had a great time painting this guy and am still quite happy with how he turned out. Also to be able to fit him in so nicely with the Exodite project. Also, Gyrinx. Stoked to see a mini for this old-school throwback get released in modern times. What does the future hold for our scaly friend and his unwanted feline companion? Time will tell. At least I hope it will.
Thanks for looking! Let's see if I can keep this up until Xmas!
Moving from a more recent model to the first one I posted here on Dakka back in 2014. Fire!
Spoiler:
The Large Fire Elemental from Reaper's BONES line. Included in the first Kickstarter, and one of the minis that drew me in. Didn't really go huge on that one. Just a couple extras, like Cthuhu, the mini that clinched the pledge. He still isn't painted. After KS 1, I decided it would be better to wait and pick and choose the four or five minis I really wanted rather than wind up with a bucket of minis I don't want. Value be damned. I did eventually track down all four elements and painted the set.
Cool takes on the traditional elementals, fun playing with the translucency.
Nice work. Elementals hold a special place in my heart. They are the first minis I used washes/drybrushing on so many years ago. You did a great job on those.
That matte black on the Zoat still astounds me. Looks chalky but also obviously isn't, not sure I have the vocabulary to describe it and how much I love it.
I have the Nolzur's set of large elementals to paint at some point. Skipped the lords. Would love to have a full set of Rackham's elementals, but only have fire and earth. Unpainted. Have done both for friends in the past, plus darkness, but not my own. Weird.
A comment is never late, zahnib. It arrives precisely when it means to. Or something along those lines.
Spoiler:
For the Emperor. Still probably my favorite Primaris model. Also still the only one I have painted in this scheme.
Today we'll feature one of my favorite comic characters. Took some time today to take pics of a bunch of older stuff. Some of it sure looked better back in the day. Oh, well.
Spoiler:
Punisher from Knight Models and from CMON'S Marvel United. Both more recent, and it is nice to have a couple Frank minis on the shelf.
Love both Punishers, although the Chibli (?) style one takes the win. Was amazed when I saw it first here and still am. And good to see that Knight gave Frank some real guns and not the NERF variant
Thanks, Viterbi. Thankfully, no NERF. Unthankfulky, a miscast arm that required repair. Thankfully, turned out OK in the end.
Spoiler:
Today we have the first Kingdom Death mini I ever painted. The pin-up Twilight Knight from the Experiment of Death. This was a PVC trial for Poots that included this mini and the infamous Wet Nurse. And it wasn't cheap. But I wanted a Wet Nurse, and that was the cheapest way to get it. Still haven't painted it. But it's primed! I also haven't painted the other two I bought when Poots decided against PVC and liquidated the sets at half price. Who doesn't love a bargain? Even in PVC, this is not a bad mini. Except that sword. Little bendy. New camera really shows how my old varnishes would sometimes not play nice together. IRL, not super noticeable. Painted in 2014.
Oops, forgot to thank gobert. Keeping it rolling. This one's for you.
Something a bit older, and a bit more obscure.
Spoiler:
Minis from Foundry's range of Revenant Elves. Odd little things, but pretty cool sculpts. Went with their puff n' slash Orcs and nubile nymphs. Sort of expensive at the time, around 15 for a pack of two. Still have a few unpainted, as well as the entire nymph range. One day. These date from before 2003, as that is when they were uploaded to CMON, where I went by Lord Humongous. A friend with a sense of humor set up the account.
Been a joy to look through these pics, keep 'em coming!
So many different kinds of models through the years, you should feel very proud!
There is something distinguishably tasty in your style. Whenever I come along one of your models in the gallery, I immediately know it's one of yours before looking at the author.
Thanos for Heroclix. Used to play a lot of clix. Wizkids had it's hooks into me deep. Even got into doing a few customs/swaps. This is the Heroscape Thanos mini on the original Thanos clix base from the very first set. Being a Thanos fan, I was stoked to pull him in my first purchase.
And since this version had no gems on the glove, I had to sculpt them myself.
I'm a little late to the party again, but I really like that Space marine lieutenant from day 3. And also Thanos. He's my my favorite MCU character. (I've worked in food service for 15 years and have come to the same conclusions about humanity and it's deserved fate ) You did a great job with the gems on the glove both sculpting and painting (and potentially the little "Fine, I'll do it myself." reference you snuck in there at the end).
Thanks, brushcommando. Not an intentional reference, but it works. I'll take it.
Let's take a trip.
Spoiler:
I was introduced to Games Workshop and Warhammer in 6th grade. That was a long time ago. Rogue Trader was the current edition and I almost immediately fell for the Eldar. The look of the regular troops, as well as the Harlequins (especially Harlequins) grabbed me, and my first pack of Citadel minis was Eldar. However, one of the other players had already made a force of Eldar, also Harlequins, and you know how kids can be. "You need to play something else, someone else is using those already." That sort of thing. Sigh. So I played Dark Angels and Chaos with my Marine models. Not too long after I started playing, White Dwarf 124 was released, with the preliminary drawings for what would be the Aspect Warriors. Mind blown. Then, a few short months later, White Dwarf 127 came out with the army list that would serve as the basis for every one that came after, and man, I wanted some of that action. Aspects, the Avatar, Exarchs. Just awesome. But, Eldar were still someone else's army. Time went by. The main Eldar player fell in love with the Space Wolf list released shortly after because it was stronger than anything else. This guy was sort of a chump. So, at the tail end of RT, I bought my first Harlequins. Hallelujah. I took a short break from playing for a while, but came back not long into 2nd Editon's life-cycle. It was then that I would realize the dream of a Craftworld Eldar army. And they have been number 1 love ever since. Some Harlequins will be making an appearance later, but here's the leaders of my Craftworld force. It's ok to do things backwards. One Farseer hasn't even had his base updated to a brown rim yet. These guys were painted pre-2000. Also including a couple squads I painted decades later and posted here previously.
Aw man. I love the old aspect warriors. Especially those fire dragons. They have a charm the new models lack somehow. Great paintjobs across the board. Especially on that old farseer.
I really like your take on the aspect's color schemes, I'm really digging the warp spider's color tones and the contrast between the dragon's armor and helmets is a great visual.
Those old Eldar sculpts had style even back then, especially the Warp spiders who had enough style that it endures to this day lol. (good looking models but GW does need to give them a new kit)
Do you have any of the RT personalities/characters? Like the legendary Kelos Longfingers?
The old Eldar are amazingly classic. Great work. For being stupily old, they hold up incredibly well, and you paintjob is a great asset to that.
Fingers crossed the new rumors pan out to cool stuff next year. I suspect there will be some fresh plastic knife ears on my own paintbench. And i should probably dust off some of the old RT lead to join them, some of whom are old enough to have names, and not just descriptions.
New Eldar would pose quite the conundrum. I don't play anymore, and have no desire to replace the army I have. However, Eldar. If there's a new Maugan Ra, it's probably going in the collection, for example. Just going to have to cross that shiny, new, plastic bridge when I come to it.
gobert, you aren't kidding. Time and experience and all that.
I do have a few older minis left, but very few of the original lineup. Most of the ones I still have are the metal/plastic hybrids. I had a lot of the originals, but over the years there have been purges, and they didn't make the cut. No shuriken catapults with the vanes sticking around here, I guess. Took a pic of what is left. The four up front are the oldest, I think. Have the Ghost Warrior in there with them. Guy with the sword was in my first pack of 40K minis. He's here to stay. Maybe get painted again one day.
Man, I sure could be a godawfully lazy painter at times. Good thing there isn't a record of my sprayed black/drybrushed silver (and that's it) generic Marines.
A selection of my favorite Harlequins. These have been retouched over the years. Also small modifications made like the Kiss for the Great Harlequin and the power blades for the Solitaire when they became an option in the 3rd edition Citadel Journal list. Had many fun times playing these guys.
Nice. I never felt that I had the skills to do the murder clowns justice. I made it part way into RTB06 before loosing interest. While the old sculpts are fun, I have to give props to the new plastics for motion. Old metals were flat by necessity.
Again with the great paint on classic metal. Well done.
I love me some RT-era Eldar. They were my first 40K army way back when, and I still have pretty much all of them, and I suspect they'll still be in their case when I shuffle off.
As you know, I had the same issue and ended up having to play the Imperial Guard in Rogue Trader and Second Edition because someone else wanted to play Eldar. Which over the next seven years he never painted them, and played them just glued to their bases.
Eldar, again. This is Sciutan Bal, chosen champion of Sciuryuden Craftworld. Original version on the right, updated version from years later on the left. In today's game, he would most likely be an Autarch, but back in 2nd Edition all we had was Exarchs to work with. And they were great. You could tool them up for anything. This guy was born from a mix of factors. The absence of a Warp Spider Phoenix Lord, my fondness of "found object of power" stories like Witchblade and my love for anime like Fist of the North Star and G Gundam all contributed. The idea is that he was one of those Exarchs that gets stuck moving from one Aspect to the next, adding to his martial repertoire. While a Warp Spider, he suffered one of those nifty jump mishaps, but instead of ending up a snack in the warp, he winds up in a lost chamber somewhere on the planet he was fighting on. In this chamber he finds the gauntlet (later, gauntlets) and returns to the battle all juiced up and ready to take names. In 2nd edition, he was an Exarch armed with a brightlance, power sword, and power fist to represent the various abilities the gauntlet granted. Also a jump generator and a displacer field, plus the fast shot and extra HTH attack warrior powers. I only played him a couple of times, since it was a little OP. Like most of my stuff, it was mainly fluff motivated.
Continuing along with the Eldar segment of our tour...
Spoiler:
My favorite Phoenix Lord and the runner-up. From the very start, Dark Reapers were my favorite Aspect, so it is no surprise that when the first codex came out I would be a big fan of Maugan Ra. I bet if they ever include him in an animated show he sounds just like James Earl Jones. Asurmen is just pretty cool. And sort of like the super-experienced version of my first Eldar mini. Both of these, and the rest of the PL, were painted pre-2000, because I touched them all up and entered the group into the Golden Demon at Games Day 2000. Maugan Ra later had his base rim painted brown for the last game of 40K I played around 6 years ago.
Several days of comments coming.
Some super neat Eldar weapons and armor.
I love the base on the Kingdom Death pinup, sword varnish not withstanding.
Punishers rock, Thanos rocks, Boob Elves rock.
Great work over many years. Things on your old models that you don't like or that show mistakes are just evidence of the growth and progress you've made.
Lovely Eldar pics youwashock! The custom Autarchs are really cool, with a neat backstory too. The 2 Phoenix Lords are great as well, Maugan Ra truly is the coolest of them all!
Lelith is one of those characters that always gets a good mini. I painted the first one a long time ago, right after she came out. The second version, I bought as soon as it was released and she sat primed for years. Eventually got her done. Bought the latest version after the individual release was announced and her price dropped into the acceptable range. Also took a pic of all three together.
Still deciding how I want her to look, as you can see.
A comment is never late, zahnib. It arrives precisely when it means to. Or something along those lines
Hahahah, ah youwashock the grey, ever the wise wizard.
Gosh you really have a painted a huge array of models and this advent calendar really shows that off! I agree with Ezki, I can always tell its you when I see your models feature on the homepage. You've got a great style.
And Eldar! Its would seem the stars have aligned and Eldar are on the minds of many...
Both are excellent minis. I do prefer the pale skin scheme of the classic a bit more. The tan one seems more real and grounded. She should not be. The sun may try to fall on her, but she’s too fast to get hit and tanned. Dirt can’t land on her. She should be unnaturally pale and clean.
IMHO. I’m sure when she gets built/painted the new one will be up to your amazing standards.
The backstory for the phasing Eldar warrior is great and love the paintjob on him. Bigger version in purple is my favorite of them. And the rest of the space elves looks great too, most of the old metals hold up really well.
Thank you, everyone. Glad you are enjoying the show.
Nev, appreciate the vote of confidence. I agree the paler skin color suits Lelith better. The third version will most likely go back that direction.
Speaking of diversity, we will be stepping away from GW for a minute.
Spoiler:
Rackham made a big splash when Confrontation made it's way onto the international stage. I was immediately smitten by the Wolfen. Man, the struggles we went through to get this stuff. Backorders from New Wave. Stock issues at Brookhurst. We even ordered from some online store in Sweden. It was a relief when they finally got wider distribution going. These two are still among my favorites, Killyox the pack leader and Kassar the fugitive. Both painted in the early 2000's.
Absolutely love that old Lelith! Such a cool model.
Brings back some memories. A friend of mine had one when we first started collecting (he chose 40k, I chose LotR). Sadly he got rid of it back in the day.
Today we have Beli'al from Shadows of Brimstone. A more recent mini, painted in April of last year. Had a lot of fun with this one. Things just sort of worked out, not a lot of stress. Haven't played SoB in a while. Too bad. It is a fun game.
Also a quick WiP of a side project. Transplanting the chest piece from the Indomitus Chaplain onto the Primaris LT from the 8th Ed. set. Just a smidge of putty and it should be good.
Those Wolfen are glorious! Confrontation had a lot of great models, scrolled through a lot recently, when I painted a friend's mini and wanted to know how the official model looked.
And remember the big guy from last year, wasn't he in the painting comp too? And the scale shot is ace, with the women charging.
No, I think that would have been someone else. I have not entered any of the monthly comps.
Spoiler:
Old Terminators with newer paintjobs. Less than 10 years old. The Librarian from the box set and one of the alternate Grey Knights converted to serve as the only version of my commander to hit the table. I remember going to a painting class 2 hours away and blowing my budget on the Terminator set. I must have been in middle school at the time. That brief bout of hunger still seems worth it.
Akosha Nama from Sedition Wars. Oh, Sedition Wars. You never forget your first time. Baptism by fire, my first Kickstarter. Crashed and burned. Multiple disappointments. However, STILL a good deal for nicely sculpted, decently cast (for the price) generic sci-fi models. Akosha here is my favorite of the bunch. When SW delivered I was in a bit of a painting slump. Working on these guys helped get me back in action.
Played Undead/Vampire Counts as my main army from 3rd edition WHFB until around 7th, when I stopped playing entirely. Even sold my armies. Kept some minis, though. A selection of blood-drinkers. Green guy in front is a full sculpt except for the majority of the big arm and the top half of the head. Wanted a Strigoi style vamp for Mordheim who wasn't like the others. Also including a pic of the minor conversion work on the purple one. Some back spikes.
Dravani from Rezolution: Dark Tomorrow from Aberrant Games. One of the ventures made beyond the borders of GW land. Sort of a cyberpunk setting. Interesting design choices. Lots of platform shoes. Anyway. The Dravani were a race of vampiric aliens. We played it once. One group member ensured it was such a NPE we never played again. Still, some of the figures were OK. The many-armed lass is a favorite.
Those are some cool models with very nice paint jobs. I'm not sure I could fit them into any game I currently play, but they look like they'd be fun to paint.
Negative Play Experience. We had a player who was all about exploiting loopholes and finding the broken mechanics. First game of Rezolution was an abomination thanks to him. So much that nobody was interested in playing again.
Some more WiP for Marines. Gunslinging Primaris with a souped up jump pack first.
Taking the Moritat idea and slapping it on a Primaris model. Blue-tacked because it will be painted in pieces at first.
And an upgrade to a model that I have never played or painted. My Space Marine Commander in power armor. This guy came about shortly after 3rd edition came out, and has had parts added and removed ever since. At some point it became clear that it would never be painted and was sort of an idea dumping ground. What to do? Start over. Based on the sarge from the Space Marine Heroes set. Lots of tinkering with both of these models. Small modifications and such. Mono-pose minis are fun to convert...so much fun...
And pics with the original version. Or the latest version of the original version. And with the heavier armored version shown here previously. You can see that I kept the cameras, as a commander should be able to keep tabs on the battle. An idea I have held since the first Space Hulk computer game where you had an HUD showing the viewpoint of all your squad members. Also the special gun and fist weapon, but the lightning claw looks cooler, I think.
Hoping to get the new guys painted soonish. If only to prevent further modification.
Spoiler:
VOID. Another stop on the journey to find a game that the group would like that was not 40K. At least we played more than one game of this. Still a big fan of some of their minis. Sadly, they went through a revamp and I was not into the new look. The cleanliness of the early models was gone. Dumped my Koralon ('Nids, really) except for the big monsters shown here and a couple more interesting gribbles. Kept VASA (human elites) and hope to one day have them all painted. The lady in blue may be my favorite mini in the whole range. Just clean, great proportions, subtle pose. I have painted it twice, this version being the altered one with a new gun.
Just catching up on the advent pics, so many great projects you’ve done. I’ve really enjoyed seeing your skills with brush. Looking forward to seeing how the marines turn out.
Thank you all very much! No giving up, Cam. Your work would be sorely missed.
brushcommando, more of a Moritat than a Destroyer, but yes, HH inspired.
Spoiler:
Relic Knights. So, I got into Kickstarter at just the right time, it seems. As a result, I got to partake in Sedition Wars, MYTH, BONES 1 and this little gem. Relic Knights got hit bad, post delivery. Roughly half the minis just weren't well received, and people had a beef with some of the gameplay. I liked the game a lot. I could get past some of the wonky casts, and I felt the gameplay offered a fairly fresh experience. But it seems to have floundered from Day 1, and our group couldn't get around the game's focus on objectives rather than charging madly across the table with your head down. These are from the Doctrine faction. Wizard school in space.
Today we have a selection of minis from Cell Entertainment. Car from KRASH, mech from RONIN, Demonic Trooper from 1999. They made great games with clunky but endearing minis. Until they didn't. One of my great game laments is their sudden demise. However, I bought enough of their stuff to keep me and the group playing for as long as we could want.
Thanks, Nev. A chunky, clunky style, but dang were those games fun.
Spoiler:
Love the Assassins. From Jaku Dihardis and Tarik Gortsucker from Chapter Approved on down. Just cool characters. Never had the space ninja, but snapped these guys up as they were released. They have been touched up since their initial paintjob. Have another round waiting for the right paint scheme, along with 2 DCA. For the fun of it, here's the two new ones I painted.
Great selection of minis in the advent. I like how the VASA lady is holding her gun one handed even though it’s basically the same size as her torso! The SMH Sgt is a cool starting point for your commander, that lightning claw is a great choice
gobert, yeah, since this version was based on Samus Aran I wanted her to have a little more OOMPH in her firepower. The original is armed with a much more reasonably sized pistol.
Cap'n, that's the truth.
Spoiler:
Speaking of metal. Here's a couple minis that aren't, but are painted like they are. Canned beef from Reaper's BONES line. Fun models. You can always count on Reaper to fill the hole in your collection you never knew existed.
Well, this is it. Last advent for the year. Thanks for following along and I hope you have enjoyed this mini walk down memory lane. Now, I have a promise to make good on.
Spoiler:
MORE ZOATS!
Merry Zoatmas. I have one more Zoat to make, and hope to do it this next year. Can't let the leftovers from making the first Jugger go to waste.
And that's a wrap. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday, Dakka. And as always, thanks for looking!
It had to be Zoats to finish off the advent calendar! A fantastic herd and collection of minis all through the month. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Thanks, guys. It was fun to do, and helped keep me engaged with the hobby a little. This year was a bit of a mess. Spent way too much time in my own way, and let myself get bogged down with the lack of progress and attention. And then, at the end of the year when I had time to actually devote, we all caught covid. Still haven't done Xmas with the extended family. Thankfully, none of us were hospitalized, but it still lasted a while, felt awful, and ate an even bigger hole in my mental well-being. Heck of a way to see out the year. Weather was the suck, too, so I couldn't even prime the Marines yet.
This year was not my best, but for what it is worth here is the rundown on what I painted.
Started out well enough with the Blitz Bowl team.
Then wrapped up the last two House Guard, finishing the first squad for the Exodites.
Then it was time, apparently, to paint my Celtos minis. They were a lot of fun, and I think they went well. Eriu, the greatsword champion, wound up one of my highest rated minis ever.
After the barbarians, knocked out the Judiciar I wanted to make. Still very happy with the way his face turned out. Contrast does a lot of the lifting, but I did some pre and post work to define things a little bit more.
Shortly after, he and his buddies were crushed by a mysterious ball of hot glue. They got better.
Next up was the first Exodite Wraithguard. Ended up getting three done. Two to go.
Marvel United Heroes up next. These are a lot of fun. Which is good, because by the time my pledge for the X-Men version arrives, I will be swimming in these little guys.
Boba Fett from Star Wars Legion made an appearance. Still have the rest of the Mandalorians to do. Sabine will probably be next. Also keeping my eyes peeled for the upcoming version with the gaffi stick and skirt.
And a large black ooze. In a pear tree.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minis for the year. Not great. But there's some fun stuff in there and something is always better than nothing. Here's to more in the coming months. Current tentative plans have Exodites and Marines on the fast track, with hopefully some Limbo Division sprinkled in. Hope you all had a happy new year.
Great recap and love seeing all the minis together. Again very diverse range of stuff and color schemes well done. And love both glue experiments, that stuff looks so otherworldly. Celtic tattoos are ace, but the Wraithguard are my favorites, the concept is just great and really well executed!
Great recap youwashock! There’s no denying the quality of your output has been fantastic all year! I agree with gorge high ratings for the celtic lady; the tattoos are stunning!
Happy New Year YouWaShock, hope you and the family have made a full recovery. Echoing what others have said above, 30 minis is an impressive output especially considering the quality of your work. Looking over the advent calendar you must have some serious shelf space to store all those minis!
Look forward to seeing what comes off your desk in 2022!
Thank you all for the compliments and well-wishes. We are doing OK. Better, but not amazing. Still have this lingering fatigue. Meh.
zahnib, yeah, there's a few shelves. I do try to do purges from time to time to keep things from getting TOO crowded. Marginally successful.
Trying to finish a model. Dire Cabbage. Just need to polish off the base. No time, no energy. However, a Facebook memory reminded me that I used to draw, so I thought maybe I would share it here. Spoilered for undressedness.
Spoiler:
She was originally supposed to be dressed, but I couldn't decide how, and then it was too late. Plan ahead, kids.
Thanks again for sticking around and thanks for looking.
Thank you, zahnib. That's very kind of you. I rustled up a few shots of some more pictures I will sprinkle into future posts.
I painted a mini! Actually finished last year, but illness and weather kept me from vanishing and basing until now. A silly thing with a sorta sloppy paintjob. Reaper and their weird minis.
I know I'm late to the party on this, but your 2021 round up is quite respectable. This silly cabbage mimic is a great way to start off the new year. Looking forward to seeing all you do in this new year!
'Tis a Dire Cabbage, Cap'n. One of Reaper's little gems.
gobert, it's a little bit of Future (any acrylic gloss would work) applied after vanishing is done.
Ezki, yeah, practice, practice, then practice some more. I feel like I was really in a good place drawing between 2016 and 2019. Then stuff happened/changed and I pretty much stopped. It will feel a lot like starting over when I start again. Which I will inevitably do. I hope.
Since I am posting, I may as well throw another pic in here. This one is at least gaming related. Pretty sure people get that I am a Fett man. When he was released in Destiny I went ahead and took an old drawing (2014 or so) and digitally painted it before running it through a custom card creator.
Wow the dragon girl is amazing!! And Boba is great too.
What do you use to varnish your models? I've been scared to take the plunge as I've heard so many horror stories of people finishing of a model and then applying varnish for it to frost on them
First I hit the model with gloss, currently Krylon Colormax crystal clear. Then I go with a flat, currently Krylon Matte, the artists one. I used to swear by Testors dullcote, but the last batch I bought gave me frost, big time. For the flat, to avoid frosting, I do two light coats, waiting about an hour between. I wait a day between gloss and flat, so the flat doesn't just sink into the gloss. Not sure how the pros do it, but that's how I do it.
A quick note on frosting, if you do happen to have it happen, another light coat of gloss can go a long way towards fixing it. I usually try to keep this rule in mind for all things paint-related: it's very easy to put more paint on, much harder to get paint off. So, light coats.

Awesome, thank you for the detailed reply! What is the advantage of applying the initial gloss coats before the final matte? Extra protection or does it provide a nicer finish? And that trick with the gloss if frosting does occur is really good to know, thank you
I've been considering going the airbrush route as that seems to eliminate the chance of frosting but haven't bitten the bullet yet on that one, rattle cans seem like the easy option.
Dire Cabbage is awesome, though I feel like it should be a St.Patricks day special figure...who knows, I might have to track one down as it scratches the need of a silly but fun project.
Your drawing skills are top notch The warrior women are excellent, gives me a good old D&D vibe from my youth. Boba Fett looks on point as well, easily looks like something I could have gotten out of a card pack and Ben excited about.
Mmmmm...with a corned beef golem for added tastiness.
Thank you for the kind words, Theo.
zahnib, the general rule is gloss for protection, matte for appearance. There are all sorts of products out there now, and one may get both bases covered, but I wouldn't know which one to suggest.
Thanks, you two. Glad you like it. Mind that I only did the art. The template was online and I just plugged my picture into it. And edited the flavor text.
New Marine build. An Emperor's champ converted from the Indomitus Chaplain. I bought him for his gun, and as it turned out, his chest, but the rest of the model inspired me to make this. I have started thinking of it as a glorified objective marker. The lone warrior having rescued the Sororita in distress striking his best Frazetta pose. Base will be tiered/built up.
And another drawing for fun. Belit.
Spoiler:
And and, we discovered this morning that if you don't put enough batter I the Star Wars pancake maker, you get a Space Marine instead of Darth Vader.
Emperor's champion looks great, the slightly tilted down head really suggests he's posing for effect But I have to take a bit of umbrage, because as we all know Sisters of Battle don't need saving Must've been an imposter he saved
With the babe on his base, I thought he might be an Emperor’s Children, and not Emperor’s Champion. Looking good
Is that the prisoner from Vect’s Dias that’s picking the lock on her handcuffs? Self-rescuing. It’s been forever since that kit was out, Don’t know if I ever saw it in the flesh.
It is one of Vect's ladies. At Games Day 2000 (merciful Zeus, that was 22 years ago) they were selling packs with just the girls, so I bought a few. This is the last of those, but I also have an unopened Vect that I picked up at a swap meet and have no intention of building as-is, so there's still gas in that tank.
Viterbi, maybe she's a Sister Infiltrata in need of extraction?

Ah I see, makes sense! Thank you, that’s been really helpful
Emperor’s Champion is looking good ad is your old art! You're a whizz at drawing figures, are you self taight or did you go to school for it?
gobert, odds are he will be one of our boys, but in traditional black so really it only matters for the shoulder pads.
zahnib, I majored in art, mostly self-taught up until that point, couple classes in high school, but it has always been an ongoing learning process, even 20 years after graduating. Also keep in mind that for every picture I share, there's a heaping helping of hot garbage stinking up the sketchbook.
Once we get the full scope of the Eldar releases I need to do some triage. What do I need right NOW, what can wait, and what I can pass on. Big guy needs to be mine at some point, the question is just when.
My situation is far simpler than yours. I only need to pick up the Avatar and Maugan Ra. And maybe decide if I want a few Reaper launcher bits for conversion purposes.
Maugan Ra is kind of a miss for me. He looks too light compared to his old version and the splits on the rock formation and cloak are a departure, but still a decent model. Still undecided on the alt heads on the Avatar
At first I though your Octoskull was an Achu-skull, then i realized it was tentacles and not a really bad sneeze . Excellent work.
Well, that's something. I feel as if it is cut from the same cloth as Book of Boba Fett. That is to say, equal parts awesome and stupid. Seeing as how (pretty sure you all know by now) MR is my fave Phoenix Lord, I will still be looking to pick it up, but there will probably be modifications. Honestly a little crestfallen. I wanted my doors blown off, and this is just sort of rustling my skirt.
Looks like he is ready to rock the Eye of Terror on the Altansar comeback tour.
Here's Rogue, to put a little sugah on the saltiness.
I think just pulling the ribcage segment out of the pole could help a lot. Of greater concern is what it will take to get the legs re-posed. Thankfully, a lot of that can be covered by the coat.
For me with Mr Ra, its the hooded head that really spoils it- too much Primaris chaplain going on for an eldar, I want an OTT xenos helmet godammit! The rest could be better but, as I'm not an eldar man, is forgivable.
Anyway, there are other places to moan about this and there is so much to love here (as usual!). Bit late but great selction of minis in the advent calendar - thanks for all of them! - though nothing beats the sight of the Zoat horde! Year end summary was cool too, so many great mins, the I enjoyed the marvel guys, really suit your painting style, and the sylvaneth/wraithguard conversions. Look forward to seeing the Space Marine conversion painted getting the new year off to a great start.

Had some time to paint so worked on a couple minis. Felt good to be working. Trying something new for the white armor, which strangely turned out looking a lot like weak Contrast. Eh, I'll live with it.
Also snapped a pic of the packaging for Vect's gals to show how times have changed and commemorate being able to just buy them off the rack.
For the White Speaker I took some cues from the art in the KD rulebook. So, I made sure to have plenty of art marks/texture on the skin and such. Never a bad thing to have some stray marks, but here it was a conscious choice.
More WiP for the Marine. Slow and steady.
And another drawing. Grendel Prime/the Paladin is probably my favorite, and Hunter Rose gets props for being first, but I first discovered Grendel with Christine Spar, and as such she will always hold a special place. Also, she wears the costume better.
Interesting... I'm pretty sure I've only ever come across the Hunter Rose Grendel, never realised there had been several iterations, seems I have some catching up to do.
Mid-week painting slump. Hope to get something going tonight. I do have a bit of art to share, hopefully you like it.
I am internet friends with the owner of Obscure Reference Games, makers of Overlords of Infamy, and was involved in multiple brainstorming sessions when that game was being developed. When he wanted to start working on a new game, Dimensions of Discord Online (not sure if that stayed the title), he reached out to me to help with the art. While I did not have the time or resources to devote to doing that, I did produce a bunch of sketches to help him along and show as concepts to real working artists. Mostly player character types, but I did a few monsters, including an unofficial mascot, the Mucilaginous Sphere. The setting was sort of sci-fantasy anime.
A witch/rogue with a tesla gauntlet.
An elf/dark elf assassin with a nasty spirit living in her bracelet. Always been pretty happy with how this one turned out.
A necromancer. The rest of him is fairly meh, but the living scythe and eyepatch are fun.
An orb-lock marshal. Typical paladin type with magic TK control over his gear.
The muci-sphere. Pencils and finished version. Adorable.
So far, this hasn't gone anywhere. ORG is a one-man show and covid really killed his time at conventions pushing his game. Maybe one day it will get made.
Anyway, hope to get some painting done. Thanks for looking!
Very nice concepts youwashock!
Hopefully the project can get some life eventually. Really sad to hear how many great things covid has ruined / delayed :/
@OP - The Jetpack exhaust effect is excellent! Really, really good!

IMO, the work that focuses on solos is the best: Hunter Rose, Christine Spar, Brian Li Sung, Eppy Thatcher, Grendel Prime...
When it's diffused into a 'Grendel society', it kinda falls apart for me.
I must say, you did a most excellent job on that drawing of Spiral, especially with the foreshortening on the leg. Comparing her to that necromancer you showed off, I think you're a bit better at drawing the ladies than the men. It's kind of the opposite problem I have.
Great Scot! That jump pack is a thing of beauty. The heat stress is great, Roland should maybe think about cooling his jets a little. Maybe do a bit of shooting for a while before he jumps away?
Great work on the pics, we can tell you’ve spent a fair bit of time on the female form
Great work on the jump pack fellow! When I eventually get some SoB models, I think I'm going with white armor, and this gives me plenty of ideas.
Lovely drawing!
Been thinking about a tattoo with some form of angelic / daemonic features on a same character (sort of like the two sides of a coin kind thingy).
Very inspiring stuff.
Finished Hannah Sharp, Falcon Scout. Another lovely lady from Limbo Division. Really wish I had bought this one in 70 mm, as she is one of my favorites from them.
And another drawing. This time the ladies of the Scoobie gang getting ready to do work.
Thanks, gobert. Much appreciated. And yes, thicc is an appropriate term.
No time for paint since finishing Hannah, but here's my take on my favorite Universal Monster, with a rare WiP shot I took before inking. This is from 2017 or so.
Primed the Champion. And that's about it. Feeling highly unmotivated. Contemplating entering the monthly comp to try to get something going. I can surely paint one model this month that I was planning to paint already, right?
And what should be the last couple drawings. Unless I start up again. You never know.
Those drawings are really great! And that pinup model you painted a few posts back turned out pretty great too. It's fun to paint those type of models, as I've learned with my 3D printed Drukhari Succubus (I really need to finish her off one of these days...).
Thank you all very much for the comments. Glad you liked the drawings, the support is appreciated.
Been working some. Less than I should be, certainly. But progress is progress.
Also bought 50% of the GW minis I plan to buy this year.
Yeah. Getting this guy was pretty much a given, unless I for some reason was going cold turkey on minis. However, nearly 50 bucks after tax for one person-sized model is pushing it to my limit. The Avatar is next, and after that I will try to be content with the mass of GW models I already own, no matter how cool the new releases may be. Also, I am not super thrilled with some of the design choices on this guy, so I will be risking that 50 bucks and doing some modifications. More on that later.
He looks like he has a lot of potential, but is very much a extreme kinda of sculpt. Kinda torn on getting him myself. Luckily, I’m not a Dark Reaper kind of guy so can push him off for now.
Interesting colors on the slave girl. Those undeshades? or is she going to be very bruised and beaten? The purpleish torso/face looks very odd right now...
Slave girl is progressing nicely, how’s the champion coming along?
For me, Maugans tattered cloak just doesn’t fit the Eldar aesthetic. It might for his lore, but my head canon has Eldar looking after their things really pristinely. Whatever you end up doing to him, I’m sure he’ll look great
Champ is early WiP, gobert. Hope to get some time in on him this week.
No underpainting, Nev. Just some red ink glazed in to differentiate the skintone/show she may have recently tumbled from a destroyed skimmer. There's Druchii around the eyes, but nowhere else. Probably the crummy lighting making the body pick up some color from the skirt.
I was kind of torn on Maugan Ra, but have grown to love the sculpt the more I see of it. As for mods to the miniature, I took the risk and did one of my own as well. Cannot wait to see our take on him.
Superb work all round youwashock, those drawings are insanely cool. Your Hannah Sharp is an amazing paint job and the mini looks excellent to paint as well.
Excited to see what you do with Maugan Ra, I don't know if he's my favourite sculpt but my mind can be changed.
Excited for the modification! Yeah the new price-hike from GW has pretty much turned me off buying from them for the forseeable future. $50 is too much for one Maugan Ra. I was getting most of my Necrons from Ebay anyway, I think they're going to regret it in the long run (of course they've been raising prices for 30 years so what do I know!).
Been spending some of the time I should be using on the Champ to tinker with Maugan Ra. Stubborn mini. Gotta love the way GW cuts their models these days.
Made it this far on the arm repositioning. Had to cut off all the annoying struts and set them aside. Especially frustrating because they will certainly be mostly covered by the shoulder pads. Works from this angle, but things got pretty mangled getting to this point. Putty to be applied.
New head at it's most raw state. Would it have killed them to cast the head as a separate piece? Putty scheduled here, as well.
Labor of love. Also painting the Champ, but no pics yet. Thanks for looking!
Thanks for sharing the experience with Maugaun Ra assembly, it seems sometimes like you have to build the character just to cut them up! But at least plastic can be more forgiving (when I was maybe 14 I almost cut my finger off converting Helbrecht as a gift for my brother). Looking forward to seeing his new look.
Thank you very much, everyone! I am glad you like them.
I don't know, Maharg. Maugan Ra fits the Reborn part of this month's theme pretty well, but I am having trouble finding time to work on stuff so far in April. I guess if I can get the build done and think I can get him done on time.
Many thanks, ListenToMeWarriors. Maugan's new head is a Death Jester mask on a masked Wych head plus green stuff. There will be some hoses added and a gem in the forehead setting, as well.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Head is done.
Just need to fit the shoulder pads over the reinstalled struts, I think.
