Just stumbled upon this thread, and glad I did – what inspiring stuff. Lovely to see your project rolling onwards, Pacific.

Thought I'd pop up a few of my more recent Epic bits and bobs

Well, I printed a Tyranid army, got a loooot of painting to do now

30 bases of Hormagaunts
30 bases of Genestealers
12 bases of Tyranid Warriors
12x Biovores
12x Zoanthropes
12x Lictors
5+2 Carnifex (2 were slightly misprinted...probably still usable)
3 Hive Tyrants

Imperial Knight shown for scale.

There's certain bits I'm not entirely happy with. The Hormagaunt scything talons are easy to snap off and I don't think they'll last many games. I messed up the supports on the biovores so the heads didn't print properly, but I think at a distance you probably wouldn't notice, the scything talons on all the bigger bugs are super thin and long and I almost want to reprint them after beefing them up a bit in blender, I don't think they'll survive many games as they are.

The Carnifex, there's a reason I haven't glued the arms on them all yet, I'm thinking of reprinting them. I wanted to base them on 25mm bases (as I can get 25mm steel discs for magnetised storage/transport), but they're too big, they'd fit okay on 30mm bases. I might shrink them to 90%, and bend the tail around so they fit nicely on a 25mm base.

Also tempted to redo the Lictors, Biovores and Hive Tyrants due to delicate scything talons and some misprints, but I'll glue them down to bases and do some test paints before I decide whether I'll do that.

There is a distinct lack of flyers, biotanks and biotitans, but I'm getting sick of sitting in front of my computer prepping models to print so I think it'll be an infantry-only army for now.

Soooo... paint schemes. I'm thinking to just recreate my 40k Tyranid scheme but in mini form. Or should I try something new?

I'm not going to be able to paint the streaky-effect on the carapace at this scale, so it'll probably just be prime white, hit it with a skeleton horde contrast paint, maybe drybrush up to a bright bone (if I can do it without snapping off talons!), then blue and red contrasts to do the talons/carapace, and maybe some edge highlights on the blue/red areas.

LOL

I dunno if I like it though. The skin is skeleton horde, which is a pretty yellow tone, so the blue (asurman blue) over the top has a greenish tint. The claws are then just flesh tearers red.

I feel like it lacks the punchy contrast that the big guys have due to the lack of streaky armour plates and the dulled down blue.

Also some test paints for the Imperial Army boys. Thought I'd go for something completely different with the high contrast orange. The sand probably came out a bit too dark through, it was Snakebite Leather drybrushed Morghast Bone then white, I was aiming for a punchier orange but because the sand is so dark the orange comes out more brown looking. Maybe instead of Snakebite Leather I could do 2:1 Snakebite:Skeleton Horde.

This was using an AP Speed Paint orange, would like to try it with an Xpress Colour or GW Contrast orange instead as I had a bit of issue with it spreading through the crevices into areas I didn't want it.

Some more test paints, I like these more, they're using Agrax instead of Skeleton Horde, so more of a neutral tone than the yellowy tone of skeleton horde.

The blue does pop more if I hit it with a white before the blue, but dunno if I can be bothered doing that on the 500 or so bugs I need to paint, lol.

Those look lovely (if that is the right term to use!) AllSeeingSkink, think the colour scheme transfers well to the smaller scale. What basing colours would you likely use in combination?

Realise I am probably preaching to the converted posting this here, but the tickets for the Epic Space Marine demo/exhibition game I am running in March are now available on the Firestorm website. Completely free, they are just to get an idea of attendance. https://www.thebattlefields.co.uk/events-at-the-battlefields/epic-space-marine-warhammer-40000-participation-and-demonstration-game-cardiff

I've made a post in the Tournament section here on Dakka too: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/808318.page

The idea for the event is to give people who don't know Epic that well (perhaps have only seen pictures in a crusty old White Dwarf and wondered why the photos were taken from so far away!) or only remember it from back in the day to come and have a look at the game and give it a go. It's presented in what I think is the ideal format for Epic, which is a gak-ton of titans, tanks and infantry blowing each other to dust on a massive table. The Epic tournament scene is already very well catered for in the UK with some well organised and regular tournaments, so the idea for this is to do something different, and along the lines of the 'mega battles' you sometimes used to get in your local GW on a Saturday afternoon. Anyway if anyone is in the vicinity of Cardiff and able to make it please pop along and take a look!

I'm initially planning on being lazy and just getting 2x armies painted and black based before I start basing them I'm a slow painter and I want to get a couple of armies together so I can play some games and hopefully sucker some of my friends into starting Epic. In my head, black bases for Epic models aren't nearly as egregious as they are for 40k models

Once I have a couple of armies done, I'm just planning on being boring and doing an ash wastes style base (so, black drybrushed grey and maybe a brown wash). Back in the old 90's books GW had a bunch of studio Epic models with ash bases and I always liked the way models contrasted against it. I also liked the *idea* of snow bases, but I always end up unhappy with my attempts at snow.

I think I have now officially painted more Tyranids for my Epic army than I ever painted in all the years I collected 40k Tyranids, lol...

Sounds like it'll be great. Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the world

I still need to get involved with the local Epic community (if there even is one, lol), still don't really have enough painted to play a game.

Those look beautiful (again, wrong word!) AllSeeingSkink. It's definitely a difficult thing to choose - I actually think it looks great with the black as you have such bright colours and it really makes them pop against it. That would be lost if you went for a similarly bright base. What about trying something as a halfway house, just adding a little texture to the base and drybrushing with a grey or dark grey? That way they could look like they've just finished stripping biomass or something like that (or could be trying to get at juicy morsels hidden inside a moon?), it would complete the look but also you wouldn't lose that pop from the colours? Just a thought!

I have just finished up one of the final Ork units, "Cap'n Squigbeard and his Merry Band of Treacherous Gitz" - basically a Kommandoes/special forces unit of Airborne Infantry Orks. These use the Vanguard miniatures for the Copters and some of the crew (ork looking through binoculars).

Spoiler:

I also got some 3D printed Orks as the Kommandoes unit. These guys are big (8mm rather than 6mm) and its the first time I've come across scaling issues, as they look far larger than the classic Epic Orks when next to them and noticeably bigger than the Vanguard minis. I guess this is the price you pay for adding all of the extra little details, they will only scale down so far, and it felt more like painting tiny 40k minis than Epic minis. But, they probably won't be positioned on the tabletop next to the other Orks as they are effectively a 'deep striking' unit, so hopefully won't be too noticeable (any historicals player knows the key when you have mixes of scales from different manufacturers is not positioning them next to each other on the tabletop! )

I'm also finished now with the mini painting, maybe a few more odds & sods for the Orks, but otherwise just trying to get the remaining terrain and bits ready for the demo game in March!

The look great. You make me feel lazy, painting all these fine details on your Orks while I'm here throwing contrast paints over my Tyranids and Space Marines like an animal, lol.

I tend to prefer the 8mm-ish scale. Where did you get the models?

Thanks man! They are from Etsy, shop called Realm of 3D prints: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1116000580/epic-ork-warriors-68mm-wakes-emporium?click_key=588d57f0908e4f530dcc5d95e2f9de102c80cf3f%3A1116000580&click_sum=a0a1c6c5&ref=related-2
I got some of their 'Orbital Knights' as well which seem pretty nice. They aren't quite as large as the Orks and would probably go alongside other ranges easily enough.

The scale issue is definitely a tricky one, although looking at these you definitely get the feeling GW won't be able to help itself if they re-release the game and the miniatures will be 8mm scale (with marines perhaps pushing towards 10mm). If you want that level of detail, miniatures holding magazines and sculpted belt buckles, I guess they have to be a certain size. I kind of like the smaller scale as it means you can knock out large quantities of infantry and tanks quickly, which was always one of the strengths of the game, and you then get that bit of abstraction of the commander looking down on the troop movements. And the larger scales are nice for photos but you generally can't see that level of detail at arms length on the tabletop anyway.
I think the Vanguard range have got it spot on, they've added a tiny bit of detail (the GW plastic originals were very basic) and perhaps 1-2mm, but they're still generally very easy to paint, and importantly scale OK (definitely the Orks, and Marines if you don't base them together) with the classic ranges. Just my thoughts and I guess we're very lucky to have the options - some of the 15mm ranges look amazing, it actually looks like 40k works a bit better at that scale!

Great stuff again, Paz.

At least with Orks it's not too big of a deal to have them come in various sizes, as that's entirely normal for their species

Of course having notably differently scaled equipment is a bit more bothersome, but still.

Yeah, I'm one of the heathens that prefers 8mm 6mm to me is just a touch too small for my liking and I can't see the detail. It's not so much that I want a lot of detail to paint but rather than I struggle to see the detail at 6mm and struggle to paint said detail.

I've bought a bunch of Vanguard DKOK at 6mm, but since then I found some 3D models and am now kind of wishing I'd just 3D printed the DKOK at 8mm instead.

The main thing I don't like about 8mm is sometimes the bases get a bit crowded, depending on the models (if a human is 8mm, and a Space Marine ends up 9mm, then you have a Terminator or a Mega Armour Ork... it's kind of hard to fit 5 of them on a base at that point).

Just a quick bit of terrain I've been working on, using the TMG Terrain airfields sold through Vanguard. Really like these, very reasonably priced and come with some useful extras such as shipping containers and AA guns. I've added some random terrain scatter and some Fulmentarus Terminators, who are acting as AA cover for the airfield. The Valkyire is the Aeronautica Imperialis miniature, and the aircraft crew are from Vanguard.

Hello!

I have no idea if this is of interest, but I've been tinkering with a little project I'm calling HexHammer.

The basic idea is to take normal 40k rules (or specifically ProHammer in my case, see signature) and reinterpret the way distances and LoS work to use an abstracted Hex-based system (which I'll describe below).

Why I'm posting it here is that the scale of the game would be reduced, and in theory I could make it work at the 1:300 scale of Epic. So imagine if you will, playing normal 40k but using epic scale, and playing on a hex grid instead of a normal board. The reduced scale means that a classic 72" x 48" board (6' x 4') would fit on a 42" x 30" print out, giving you a micro-sized version of 40k. There are lot of resources for custom printing modular hex tiles, so you could have a lot of fun building boards and terrain that way.

See the image below for a basic structure of the system:

The idea is to streamline out individual model movements, measurements, Line of Sight, range measurements, etc. But leave most of the other 40k rules intact. Most ranges in the game are increments of 6", so measuring distances is just quick count of hexes. For weapons that are shorter/longer by 3" can reduce/increase by a sub-hex. Similar approach applies to movement as well.

The objective would be to cut down on playtime and/or enable slightly larger games. Obviously, one could just play Epic, but this version would let you leverage all the details in the codexes as normal.

Thoughts?

This is certainly an interesting idea. We know other games like Battletech and Deadzone work very well with area-based systems, rather than point-to-point measurements (I actually think a game like Warcry, where measurement to the tiniest millimeter can often determine if you win or lose the game, would really have benefited, but I digress!)

One difficulty you might have is getting people who enjoy the various Epic rulesets to jump back into using the 40k rules in their current incarnation. In the same way, of how do you convince people to jump from their beautifully designed sports car into a 6-seat 50bhp people carrier which has a puncture and the smell of someone soiling themselves on the back seat can never quite be removed But other than using this as an opportunity to have a joke about how superior the Epic rules systems are, would be interested if it could work. Has anyone seen any micro-armour games or similar that work on a hex-based system and think it could work likewise?

Post by: Sherrypie

Free measuring and hex-based metrics aren't fundamentally too different, especially given how most meaningful ranges in GW games tend to be multiples of 6" / 15 cm anyway. Grid-systems just handwave the fuzziness at the edges (which some people enjoy as a meaningful part of the free measuring, of course) by stating that it's not the core activity to emphasize and instead bring a bit more certainty to the moves that can be made. Grids of course come with the expense of requiring more dedicated gaming surfaces, unlike free measuring games that can play anywhere you can plop your models down.

The gameplay would become a bit different by changing the metric space, but not that starkly. You lose some true los benefits and "oh no, I'm 1" short!" moments, but over 90% of 40k or E:A or such would remain as it ever was. Your decisions to move, fight and have your little guys die stay mostly the same.

Agreed on both fronts. I used to play a lot of BattleTech back in the day, so there's that familiarity on my end.

As far as 40k rules go, I'm going to work on these rules on basis of using ProHammer, which for those that don't know is a 4th + 5th edition mashup that has compatibility patches to work with any codex in the 3rd - 7th edition range. ProHammer ALSO adds some features, like a proper suppression mechanic, etc. It's a bit more detailed in some areas, which is fun but also adds to the game length, hence finding ways to streamline it down more.

One of the modules I've wanted to add to ProHammer was having a proper Alternating Activation or some other turn order system to be utilized. It seems like if that could be made to work with HexHammer here it would really be a nice combination between classic 40k and Epic. That's the hope anyway!

So, my big idea is that once I settle on a grid size (thinking about 2.5" hex tiles) I'm going to design them with all sorts of pre-printed terrain. The edges of the files can also get features like barricades, walls, etc. Or, the tiles cover base "area terrain" types and then there is a series of tokens and shapes that can be placed on top of allow for customized board layouts.

Question for people: In Epic - what are the diameters of the individual model bases that are glued/placed onto the lager bases? Are those are 6-8mm in size?

Would have to see how it plays. I've not played a lot of hex games, but the ones I have played I didn't love the way the hexes restrict things and make it feel board-game-ish.

But I'd be willing to give something like that a go. Not terribly interested in a 40k based rules system though, there's reasons I stopped playing 40k, rules was one of them

I believe in Epic 40k, ranges were typically in 5cm increments (about 2 inches). So a unit might move 10cm, or 15cm, but as from memory nothing would move 12cm or 13cm. So maybe a game based on 2 inch hexes might translate well. Though Titans (Adeptus Titanicus models) do have bases much bigger than 2 inches.

 Mezmorki wrote:

They're roughly 5.5mm because the holes in the bases going back to old versions of Epic were roughly 6mm.

I'm calling it HexHammer, but it could also be viewed as a "portable" or pocket-sized version of 40k, that still has the full ruleset behind it. Enough custom printed tiles for the gameboard/table wouldn't be very large, and a 2,000 point 40k army at epic/6mm scale would be a pretty small volume and footprint. Couple that with faster gameplay versus the full-version of 40k, seems like it could be an intriguing combo.

Thank you for posting about the model/figurine base size. That's helpful for my planning

I'd suggest tuning the stack sizes so that a typical transport vehicle and its typical loadout, i.e. a Land Raider and 5 Terminators, or a Rhino and 10 marines, fit in a single hex together. Currently, in your example, Raider + Termies is fine, but Rhino + 2 Stacks of marines is not. If you stick to that 'rule' in general, you can effectively make embarking and disembarking work by having the units in the same hex, and only need to get more complicated for extremely large transports or units, i.e. mostly superheavies. I think that the typical Rhino+Squad combination is common enough that it merits a slight fudging of your general size rule for how many stacks a vehicle takes to make that specific combination work within a single hex.

That's a good thought about the size of the hexes relative to transports, and might be a a good thing to reference. Although, with the sub-hex areas being only 3", you could just say that embarking and disembarking is always from or into that space relative to the access point of the vehicle.

I often fine we take too man liberties with jamming units in space where they probably shouldn't fit, and requiring more space might not be a pad thing. Definitely something to look at when I prototype this

A Legion Manticore Battery travels along a roadway. Following successful disruption of supply lines by Ork long-range Biker groups, the route is under protection. In this case by a unit of Androids, designation Gamma-Mu, who had been withdrawn from frontline duty after they failed to follow orders and assault an Ork counter-offensive, leading to heavy Legion losses.

Gameplaywise the differences are a wash, just pick the ones you like aesthetically. E:A rules specify that no dimension should exceed 40 mm or be less than 5 mm while at least one must be at least 20 mm. Within thosr bounds, anything goes from rounds to squares or bananas.

Excellent! I'd happily sit and read through a book of pictures of your Epic stuff, its up there with the 'Beyond the Green River' stuff from Italy.

Sadly had to cancel my 3rd Ed games over the Christmas holidays due to sickness (two Christmases in a row now! )

But made more progress on my Nurgle traitor guard though. Found a paint scheme that I actually liked AND was quick to do. Need to base up a load of the infantry now, but just not had the push to get them done.

The tank riders are pinned where possible and whilst I don't recommand moving them by grabbing them directly, they are not going to come off any time soon. They do only have a very small contact area for gluing otherwise. For the kneeling chap, the trick is to leave the sprue attached and then cut that down to size to use as the pin. The sitting chap can be attached without being pinned, as you can re-enforce the bond with a glue/bi-carb mix behind him which is then hidden in the final model.

Some pics from a game I played yesterday, just trying out the armies for our planned demo event with a smaller 4000pt game. A bunch of photos are hidden behind the spoiler tags.

After devastatingly accurate artillery fire had damaged approaching Snakebite Clans, the Ork fast attack contingent flanked them. Some poor positioning by defending Tactical units allowed the artillery to be destroyed.

Ork forces crossed the river. The fates were cruel and while a unit of Gretchin managed to pass safely, a sudden surge of water carried away a few Nob and Boyz units.

Warlord Mutarg's Gargant, being peppered with Lascannon fire from a Landraider company, lines up a Gutbuster shot on a Warhound that had foolishly taken a step too far out of a housing complex. The shot was deadly accurate, cutting straight through the shields, shearing the Warhound's leg off and sending the machine crashing to the ground. The shot then cannoned straight through the building behind before landing squarely on a 'Field Police' (Consul Opsequiari) unit. Some snorts of derisive laughter may have been heard from the Sergeant of the unit the Field Police were attached to...
Spoiler:

The Berskerer unit charges straight into the Snakebite Clan, under the auspices of saving the Blood Angel recon unit nearby. Without a thought to their own survival the crazed marines were swallowed up into the mass of Orks, and although they exacted a heavy toll when the sound of revving chainblades stopped only the Centurion unit leading them remained.

The Shadowsword company was poorly deployed, a treeline ahead of them meaning they had very little field of fire, being able to only attack some targets of opportunity (alas for the Cult of Speed Warbike that was hit by a Volcano Cannon). Corrective psycho-surgery for the unit commander awaited them following the retreat of World Eater forces. The second Warhound Titan ahead of them fared better, it's twin turbo-laser destroyers making short work of approaching Ork armour.

A Legion Fulmentarus detachment advanced on the airfield and lay down a devastating barrage of cyclone missile fire on the Ork units contenting the airfield objective. Unfortunately, some experimental powerfield technology on an accompanying Mekboy Dragster deflected the shots onto the nearby Marine Jet Bikes, destroying them!

Cap'n Squigbeard's Freebooters unit capture an objective from the air. Poor positioning by the Imperial Forces and a lack of infantry nearby meant the Ork unit was safe inside the forest, although the Black-Ork Choppa was shot down by nearby Land Raiders. Squigbeard was heard to mutter curses about the amount of teef it would cost to replace.
Meanwhile, a Stompa unit secured the Ork town. Landraider Lascannon fire bounced off their thickened armoured hulls but was unable to find a weak spot.

The Legion Commander looked at the forces arrayed, and in particular the fearsome, smoke-belching monstrosity of the approaching Gargant, and spoke the command to withdraw Imperial forces. They had already lost a Warhound Titan, and the Land Raider company was starting to take heavy losses. Futhermore, their own anti-armour units, the only ones really with a chance of damaging the Orks, were poorly positioned across the other side of the battlefield, while a row of rapidly moving red dots on the auspex showed Ork fast attack units had outflanked his forces and were destroying the Legion artillery. The Orks of this world still had some fight in them, it seemed, and the compliance of Zeta-Five-Zero would not be achieved on this day..

This weekend i'm gonna do some demo games for some friends. Gotta build up the epic community from scratch here

I spent the weekend prepping. Printed out rules and crafted blast markers and templates. I have the minis for the first 5 practice scenarios in the book (i'll proxy the additional predators with my whirlwinds, no way I'm getting 16 predator destructors).

Did lots of solo practice games on a living room table to sharpen my rules skills.

I've just reread this whole thread again, so much good content in here!

Posted this to my painting log, but it never sees very much traffic so reposting here as well!

I'd Somehow missed this one from my last Ork update. A little while back I painted a new version of the battlewagon (got quite a few more to do, but always like to do a test one first) and made some more ork terrain, this time from 40ks 2nd edition era! Some tiny spikey things!

Battlewagon is from Vanguard.

I need to get back to painting more Epic at a faster pace. I started putting all my Epic stash together in one spot for the first time ever, and turns out I'd gone slightly crazier with purchases over the lockdowns than I had realised at the time!

Thank you! I tried for years to paint in a more realistic, or grim dark way. Never got the hang of it (outside a couple of decent test models here or there) and just decided to lean heavily into the obscene colour schemes more! I think the mix of metals and yellow panels don't quite cross over to the old 2nd ed assault on the eyes that the orc colour schemes, but I think its a nice compromise!

Those look great Gitdakka.

We use tiny (tiny!) little dice and just place them on a spot on the base.

I do miss the old rotating card shield tracks though, I am surprised that someone like Battlebling hasn't done them in a few different sizes, I am sure there are probably enough people using the Titans for Epic that they would sell well.

Finally got to play the big expo/participation game at Firestorm Games in Cardiff yesterday. Had a good number of people turn up to give Epic a go and a lot more stop to have a look at the game. Most importantly, a lot of dice were rolled and (hopefully) fun was had!

Am still a bit dazed from the activities, but before I lose of memory of what happened in the game some quick highlights.
A few of the photos are lifted from the Firestorm Games Facebook page, hence the watermark. The game played with Epic Space Marine/Titan Legions, with some NetEpic elements, rather than Epic 40,000 as the logo suggests.

The 12th Legion World Eaters and the forces of Warlord Mutarg setup, just before the game started. Approx 20,000pts were present on 12ft of tabletop.

The two Warhounds and a tactical Company moved up one flank. A Steam-Gargant bellygun shot took out one of the Warhounds at the knee, bringing it crashing to the ground, while the centre ground was an absolute bloodbath. By the end of the game the entire Marine company and an Evil Sunz Clan had effectively wiped each other out. A Mekboy Dragster with experimental forcefield annoyingly stymied the attentions of an entire Land Raider company, until a Fellblade annihilator cannon shot went through the flickering shield, the gun living up to its name.

The Warlord 'Pugnus Mortis' dominated the battlefield centre supported by Robots, Dreadnoughts, Androids, and a Marine Battle Company! Combined with supporting artillery fire the Ork Goff clan facing them was pulverised. One notable moment was a Mekboy Gargant which somehow managed to survive two turns of the Warlord's Plasma Destructor, and had great fun flinging about the Rhinos of the battle company with its lifta-droppa arm, and making scrap piles. The Warlord should have had some opposition from the Great Gargant opposite it...

First shots of the game: The Shadowsword company opposite the Gargant opened fire with their volcano cannons. They hit the Gargant, which should have been protected by its power fields, right? They would have, had both shots which hit not got the 1 in 6 chance of going straight through the flickering power fields! The shots smashed two deep holes in the hull, causing a massive fire which hit the magazine. Although the Ork krew onboard tried to control the fires (pretty much for the rest of the game, although the Gargant effectively just sat there smoking and not really doing much!) the fires eventually hit the belly-gun high-ex ammo and the giant machine disappeared in a massive explosion.

Some other highlights of the game:
- The beastmen company holding an objective in the middle of a built-up area started to take heavy casualties from Squig Katapult hits, who it seemed very much liked the taste of the abhumans. About to withdraw, the nearby Field Police unit ordered them to remain in the fray. However, the beastmen didn't take kindly to the orders and killed the police unit!
- The Berserker unit emerged from their termites directly in the centre of the Snakebite clan. The chain-axes revved, choppers chopped, and when the dust settled only the Berserkers remained. But they were then all cut down from fire from the circle of other Orks who were waiting for the outcome of the combat!
- The Weirdboy tower played with fire and absorbed a huge amount of psychic energy, hitting the Reaver Titan with a tremendous outpouring of energy. All of the Reavers shields were stripped down one by one, and the final shot hit the Titan's legs, fusing them together and immobilising the titan for the rest of the game!

Result of the game
A draw! (Well, a minor to the Orks as they held the most objectives) Both armies had taken enormous casualties. For the forces of the Crusade, although the Ork defence of the world was broken, their Legion contingent had taken severe losses. This far away in the galactic rim it would place the compliance of the remaining worlds of the system in serious jeopardy, forcing the expedition to either wait for reinforcements or press on with their Imperial Army and Titan Legion forces. As for the Orks..

Warlord Mutarg brushed at the burn marks on his armour as he emerged from his 'escape kapsule'. Behind him, the guttering remains of his Great Gargant smoldered. He made a mental note for the Mekboy that had designed the vehicle's power fields to be turned into squig food! A small group of other Goff Nobz approached, they had taken a good kickin' against the white and blue armour boyz as well and didn't look too happy, especially after his Gargant had completely failed to give the requested support. Mutarg noticed his rival Warboss Mutilla was among them. And he seemed to be acting a bit suspiciously, while trying to hide his big kustom-blaster behind his back..

Finally a shot of me and the guys (complete with themed t-shirts!) that made the day possible! This game had been a hobby dream of mine since I was a teenager, it's take a fair few decades but we have finally got to play it!

Have to say I now feel a bit empty as this was a project that absorbed so much of my free time over previous months - what am I now meant to do with my life!

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, really appreciated! Yes I do need something else on the Bucketlist now Sherrypie haha. I am going to take a break from Epic now for a short while (funnily enough to do some smaller projects, in scope if not in scale!) but have given thought to next games. I have always really wanted to do a Squat army and now Onslaught miniatures have a tremendous range, with Land Trains, Airships etc. So I might give them the Orks as the opponent and make some themed Squat fortress terrain, in a kind of Battle for Golgotha from the old WD battle report, but brought into the modern age. Will have to give it some thought!

Those look great Gitdakka, nicely detailed. Are you going to do anything for vehicle options for them?

Very nice work there sir! Those are indeed some of the cutest Ork dreadnoughts I have ever seen (not sure if I would think that if I were just 6mm tall, but still!)

Has anyone had any experience of the Onslaught Grudd range? I got some of their Stygian(?) Dark Eldar, and I think it's partly a result of them being so detailed and delicate but they had an awful lot of flash/clean-up to do. Was going to put in a big Grudd order, but it's hard now with there being no UK distributor (so a small sample is more expensive) - I don't like the idea of a lot of cleanup on hundreds of 6mm guys. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Played some nice E:A with NetEA lists today, a brutal showing of combined arms as my artillery and air heavy Crusade marines tore through the Orkoid menace. As the green tide rushed on, artillery prepared the targets with casualties and confusion, lighter infantry took supporting positions and a crushing air assault of terminators struck home like a rain of meteors. Prep, support, smash, repeat. Hopping on board the Hawks and crashing down again later, this methodical eradication of the greenskins concluded in a triumphant victory for the XIV.

The Great Gargant was fine, my marines didn't really bring enough anti-tank to deal with it effectively so I ignored it and savaged everything else

It waddled into the midfield road junction, blasted some tacticals into submission and generally found itself in the wrong place for affecting the endgame as the Death Guard airlifted around the flanks.

Well, this week I contacted a KS that got C&Ded by GW (wich I backed and paid for) and the creator kindly resent me the files. Specifically, Epic scale space bugs. So... obviously I got to print some ^^

They're kinda old school and thick, which I love for this scale:

The bio titans are small-ish compared with current AT Imperial ones... but they weren't really big to start with, and a big dog will still feth you up in close combat ^^

Those look fantastic, brumbaer! Yeah, both the minis and the scale are fantastic to look at, and to play with, IMHO.

I did a paint test today, with contrasts and regular highlights:

Couple more tests, this time using Vallejo Xpress paints as a base:

The zoanthrope looks really cool, but the "purple" is way too pink, it kinda blends with the flesh:

Spoiler:

This I think looks pretty great, and it's actually just a xpress coat and highlights:

Hahah, yes, all done by myself but the sculpting, and thank you, that's high praise.

The nids were done on a Saturn 2 with Jayo ABS-like resin at 50 microns per layer, and I'm actually pretty happy with the results, because it's sharp enough that I don't feel the need bothering with smaller layer thickness.

And they are a delight to paint, a couple contrasts and drybrushes bring out all that sweet detail.

Is there no base printed with smaller layer-height or even better one milled instead of printed available ?

Yeah, the bases are basically "that'll do" xD. I changed the nozzle of the fdm printer for a 0.8mm one instead of the regular 0.4mm (because that's so, so much faster for other projects) and it makes it more noticeable.

But in person you mostly don't notice when you have them on hand, and it's impossible to notice at tabletop ranges, so I'm not too bothered by it.

So I bought a Leviathan Psychophage because I thought it would probably look cool as a big biotitan.

And honestly, I think it looks pretty cool side by side with Ankylo's designs

Size wise I think I can use this guy as a hierophant and Ankylo's as hierodules:

I inly needed to make a couple of changes to the mini: the skulls being digested under the skin and the marine arm being grabbed by the mouth's tentacle thingies needed to go. The skulls only needed a bit of scraping, and as for the arm, well... a swap was in order:

After that, the only thing needed to do was spruce the base up a bit to sell the scale:

Spoiler:

Still only in early painting stages, though. Hopefully I'll be able to paint it completely during this month.

I was more thinking STLs because I like to play with the scale of them to match everything else I have. Last time I bought stuff from Vanguard, they were very nice, but were out of scale with the rest of my stuff.

The Raiders of Cendre models are really nice but I think I'd have to convert them all to be open topped

First test model, Sons of Horus traitor color scheme. This is Terradon Tuquoise Contrast over zenithal.

the color is off. Any suggestions? A friend thought perhaps a spray of gloss, followed by dilluted Nuln Oil or Black ink to dark and seep in recesses may be good idea. You?

Spoiler:

Army Painter Warpaints Air Majestic Fortress, Elemental Bolt, Psychic shock zenithal (although on the vehicles, not... particularly visible it seems), followed by fairly harsh Citadel Nurgling Green (dry) drybrush, wash with warpaints green tone (though Citadel Coelia greenshade is very close, either works fine!). Photo doesn't quite look as 'canonically SoH'-green as it does IRL but gives an idea.

Yeah it's a completely different set of paints, but since you're already applying zenithal highlights I'm guessing you're set up for this approach.

(I've also done some infantry with AK interactive Emerald green followed with Mint green, if you prefer hairs on your brushes after all. is a little more green, little darker than this vehicle although a more enthousiastic drybrush likely fixes that on the next batch of infantry.)

Hope some of it helps.

My speed-painting-6mm-scale-Sons-of-Horus technique is to prime white (could be zenithal white over black instead), hit it with a Kroxigor Scales, then drybrush it Emerald from Vallejo Model Colour. Could probably also do a slightly lighter drybrush using a pastel emerald.

Don't have any pics of the results, but it gives me a result I'm happy with. It might be slightly more pale than GW's studio paint job, but at 6mm scale I like a bit of extra contrast and punchiness.

Those are some mighty fine tanks, Novan elites? Love the look.

I finished the second Lancer, this time with a more battered look:

And painted this trio of Arquitor bombard lookalikes. Very basic slap job to have them painted and useable, but the prints themselves were not very good.

So I've been working on a kind of special project lately: I kinda wanted to assemble a full 2000 points old school Imperial army, and I decided to use as a template the one from WD 216's battle report, The Scourging of Lammas, changing a couple things around (couple changes in the detachments mainly for aesthetics and removing the space marines and using legio and Imperial Fleet assistance instead) and filling it up to the full two thousands.

This would be the full army footprint before gluing the infantry:

Which, when zooming in, is composed of:

"F" Company, 8th Magdellan Regiment
Captain Morcar with escort and Primaris psyker with two additional Command sections and two Ogryn squads for protection, commanding a full company composed of three regular infantry squads and six heavy weapons squads, with a Demolisher Siege Tank providing support and 4 scout Sentinels as recon elements

4th Armored Company, 8th Magdellan Regiment
Captain August Bach riding the Command Vanquisher LR commanding two full Leman Russ squadrons, with 2 Griffons providing close fire support and 2 Hellhounds to discourage assaults, and two mechanized infantry squads (standard and HW) to intercept any would be assaulters:

1st Artillery Company. 8th Magdellan Regiment
Bombardier-Major Senlac onboard a Bombard Heavy Siege Gun and a Deathstrike Missile Launcher, plus a full battery of six Basilisks, two Hydras for provide AA defense and a mechanized infantry squad to stop assaulters:

Jegun's Charges
Rough Rider Captain Jegun and an additional RR command section plus 6 Rough Rider Squads to act as flankers, with 6 Sentinels providing much needed heavier firepower:

2nd Armored Company, 8th Magdellan Regiment
Captain Hardraade on a Baneblade with a Shadowsword for super heavy hunting (yeah, I only have printed two Baneblades so far, but I'll eventually probably swap it xD)

135th Support Air Wing, Segmentum Ultima Fleet
Just a couple of Marauder bombers to reach out and touch someone:

Legio Gryphonicus Battle Maniple Element
Gladius Rex, Reaver Battle Titan:

The idea here was to not have "ideal" detachments, but rather to have a established army with which one would need to make do and adapt it to the battle's circunstances. Some of the additions are to fill out points or for aesthetics reasons (haven't found yet Epic scale ratlings I like, for example, and I I prefer to field full LR squads instead of pairs) or to have a little bit of everything. The mechanized infantry squads in the armored or artillry detachments are mainly fo aesthetics and in-world sense ^^.

And well, now I have to paint all this xDDDD

Amazing Albertorius! That's a really cool theme, I love the little infantry with the busby hats (I would feel bad about killing those guys!) and the Ogryns, which look to be Epic versions of the 2nd edition 40k Ogryn miniatures if I'm not mistaken?

Indeed they are, you have good eye . I've always loved the old big guys, and the proportions work in their benefit when scaling down, so...

Those vehicles look super sharp. I've never been able to print vehicles without having some faces showing layer/voxel lines (can play with the orientation to get 1 perfect surface, but all the others will suck).

What sort of magic are you using to do it? Is it a super high res printer? Tiny layers? Spent a lot of time dialling in exposure time?

Oh, they absolutely have layer lines xD. Check the Basilisks' gun shields, for example, or the Baneblades' front glacis besides the demolisher cannons, it shows pretty clearly there.

Other than that, I haven't really done anything much in this case (50 microns/layer, dialed in exposure I guess). But there are lines, believe me.

Maybe it's the resin color I guess...

More gaming happened in Epic scale, as we're all waiting for the Legiones Imperialis to slowly dripfeed into our systems there's always good ol' Epic: Armageddon to smash. Or in this case, orks faces to bash with both hands as the capitol city of Miami V needed defending, twice in a row!

First battle saw the orks thoroughly scrunched against the hot'n'hateful steel of Mechanicum.

The second battle saw an almost unstoppable triple-mob charge pour through one flank of robots, but the day was still carried by remorseless robots marching to the ork home base through a burning channel ripped in the earth by a nova cannon shot from the backfield Ordinatus.

It was also finally a good excuse to take a family portrait of the Mechanicum painted thus far

Two games, but yes

If you want to see a battle instead of a mere fight, got to go for the appropriate scale.

In the game pics? Digital edit of a sunset sky, I just like the atmosphere more when all real life walls, chairs and people's butts are removed from around the table. Also removed some of the more egregious dice, tokens and bottles laying around while at it as usual. Couple of minutes of GIMP editing, nothing too fancy there

It definitely makes all the difference! And with the backgrounds especially.

I always have my shots ruined by piles of dice, tokens, rule books balanced on buildings and then usually the ubiquitous big belly poised like some sort of moon hovering over all of the miniatures

I remember reading that in WD battle reports they used to take quick Polaroid shots during the game itself, then afterwards come back and re-arrange the Miniatures on the tabletop as they had been in the game, with proper lighting etc. It would be a bit of work, but I think a good idea.

[Epic] Epic and Epic 30k thread - show it off.  @ 2023/08/05 22:57:10

Post by: Sherrypie

Yeah, they did do the whole polaroid rigamarole back in the day. Especially in those very 90's days when they still hid some of the miniatures' bases under green flock that was loosely covering the tabletops!

It's not a bad idea if one has the time and resources, really. It's always a bit of a hassle to take properly, or at least legibly, lit pictures during games so that they wouldn't also have too many dice, beverages, bellies or wiggling sausage-fingers waving tape measurers everywhere. Bloody hobbyists, having fun while others are trying to elevate the artform

Had a campaign match of epic this evening. Mission was to hunt a deamon prince who was feeding corruption to the planet of Minerva. In the last round the space marines managed to break him out of his cover with a withering hail of fire. As the deamon prepared to teleport out of the battlefield, the last available marine unit sighted his fellblade onto the creature, and ended his foul existence! The planet is saved!

Fantastic work! That it is a lovely looking collection, nothing like the feeling of completing an army and having it ready for the tabletop. Have you got any games planned or is it just for display?

I have just started on a small Crusade-era Eldar Craftworld force. I unearthed these old Falcon Grav Tanks from storage (I have quite a few of them as you got loads with the 2nd edition starter set). Was going to model them with a bit of wire so they can be 'floating' on the base, and then noticed they had added the tiny hole on the bottom for I guess this purpose! It took me 30+ years but I finally noticed!

Just put together a test scheme for some Great Crusade-era Eldar. These were a pretty simple scheme, one coat AP Absolution Green and Contrast Shyish purple for the weapons and other bits. The Guardians are proxy Vanguard Eloi miniatures.

These are the 'Dyun-Kel', from a Craftworld of my own imagining, set around the 30k-era they did not survive through to the 'current' 40k timeline. Perhaps we will find out why I always wanted an Eldar army back in the day, I remember they used to be absolute monsters on the tabletop (I still have nightmares about an unstoppable Windrider host!) but we will probably use the NetEpic rules, where I believe some of the points values have been adjusted and made a bit more fair.

My hobby time has recently been taken up by ambitious gamesmastering duties and research, half-painted models languishing forgotten on the painting table, but at least there's been some tabletop time in there. More gaming pictures it is, then! This time it's been a solid weekend filled with a couple of big Titanicus clashes full of nuclear fire and fender benders with our loyalist line taking the cake against a traitorous mutant horde.

Exidium Ultimum got to take a walk in the second game, crushing three Warlords after the scenario forced us into a very aggressive spearhead deployment

Just a couple of small units of Epic Eldar I have completed.

Some Warp Hunter artillery/tanks, these are GW originals (always liked the miniatures for these but never got hold of them back in the 90s, unfortunately had to pay a fair bit more for them than I would have back then!)

With these guys just having some fun with the 30k setting with a new and fabricated Aspect warrior unit, known as the Bleeding Blades. They are comprised of master swordsmen who each try to find formidable opposing warriors with which to test their skills. Their blades have a special wraith-bone construct which allows them to 'absorb' the final moments of those they best in battle, and can re-live these fights afterwards. That I have used some Dark Eldar miniatures (a proxy from Onslaught miniatures) to represent them, and they obviously have not survived to the 40k era as an Aspect Warrior house, gives a hint that they may be walking a bit close to the line as far as the fall of the Eldar/Slaanesh is concerned!

More gaming every once in a while!

My Ashen Gods kicked some God-Breaker butt yesterday, ~2600 points per side rushing to burn each other's backline objectives while wandering dust clouds blew up in the outskirts. The Iconoclast got checked by a Clawlord, lost all of its shields, was killed by another Warlord immediately afterwards and crippled one of my own Reavers on the way down, but the enemy had by this point already been aggressively outmaneuvered and cornered in their own deployment zone, soon to be torn apart by my demi-Ferroxes ripping into their flanks as they burned all of the objectives without losing any of our own.

Didn't post it here, but I finished my first Questoris Knight. Chose House Coldshroud for an old school, vibrant och high contrast scheme that would pop well next to my more monochrome Iron Hands.

Had a lot of fun painting this one!

Edit: oh the troubles of uploading images to Dakka... No idea why it rotated standing images. :/

Those look better painted than most 28mm iw

Some shots of the solar aux and more natural terrain like forests.

Spoiler:

Also made some objective markers using some flat bases and some bits blitz stuff. A mix of the computer consoles and med bays, also put the litttle esoteric book shop on one. Now it seems they're smaller than the official objective size which looks closer to 32-40mm ish but the thought with these is they do fit well on top of civitas roofs like infantry, so they might be ideal if objectives can indeed be places inside structures.

Thank you Gents!

@Albertorius: like your IW a lot. I'm doing IW as my next Legion with the new LI kits.

@C: nice work, like your objectives. I would not red the scenario rules too literaly, I would def go for whatever size looks best, and can be placed in terrain. We always place objectives in areas that make tactical sense, e.g. terrain features, regardless what the scenario says. Adapt it to make it more alive, make more sense and look better. Objectives spread along a line in the table centre isn't what we are going to play if I should make myself clear. Unless key buildings happen to be placed there maybe.

Yeah I think we'll definitely be going with alternating objective placement and or agree to place them at obvious focal points on the board.

I just wanna know either way, they look sorta somewhere between 32mm-40mm. I think it's closer to 32 but if it's 40 for example, could instantly start using poker chips i got that are about 2mm thick as objective bases for ground level. Could do thematic stuff too, might be enough room to do a crashed ship in a nod to the old plastic crashed aquila lander terrain.

PSA, if you can get your hands on the new civitas ruins box, it actually makes a lot of ruins. I managed to make 12 out of the box. Also had enough parts to build 3 defense lines. I put the shipping crates on 40mm's as objective markers for a scenario with a crashed freighter.

The new civitas ruins box really makes a lot of ruins. Also added some extra bits to help weigh them down. There was enough parts to make 3 little sections of defense line that look pretty sharp, got a couple shots with infantry/tank for scale. Lastly I saved the two wrecked crate parts and put them on 40mm bases. going to use them as special objective markers for a scenario with a crashed freighter.

Think those look really nice Crablezworth, and very efficient use of that kit!

So for a break from doing the new Legions stuff I have finished off these Eldar Doomweavers. Felt a little guilty as these were opened from new (and I can tell you now that they did not cost 3.99! ) so spent a bit of time on them trying to do justice. I have followed the classic GW colour scheme for these, which was black and then just little bits of colour to denote the Craftworld.

Some colour tests later and I'm now happy with my IW colours. Took a bit of experimentation to get the right brightness for this scale. The method I settled on I can do fairly quickly too, especially if I dont do marines with plasma glow.

Good work guys!

I played a homebrew scenario today, "battle for orks drift". Some guardsmen tried to hold their outpost vs overwhelming attacking orks. But reinforcents arrived and turned the tide! In the final round the orks managed to rout the imperial shadowswords from the objective with their very last big shoota salvo. It was an even fight but an ork victory.

I'm horribly indecisive, so I painted a rainbow of legions...

Still not sure which one I'll go with. Already have an existing Ultramarine force, so maybe them. Dark Angels are nice but black models at this scale, I dunno, feel like I want something more visually distinctive, but maybe as a whole army with a contrasting base colour they'd look cool. The non-metallic Alpha Legion feel a bit different, I think it'd look cool on some of the bigger tanks and aircraft where the purple -> blue -> teal transition would be more obvious (or maybe I wouldn't be able to make the blend look smooth enough...). The Word Bearers came out a bit flat looking, if I were going to go that direction they'd probably need more highlighting to make the red a bit punchier. The Imperial fists I don't really like how they came out, should have gone with a more orange-yellow (the one pictured was Imp Fist Yellow over a Skeleton Horde preshade). Something about White Scars just looks cool at this scale, a bit of weathering on it and I think it'd look nice as a whole army.

Honestly, they all look cool ^^, but if were I to choose, I prefer from the above the Scars, the Sons the Ultras and the Angels, and of those the Scars and the Angels I'd say need a bit more to really pop up.

Yeah, loving everything I see here. Albertorius Russes are incredible, that weathering is a work of art and I love the lil vostroyan tank commander (is that a 3d print?).

I think the rhinos all look good, though something looks "off" with the alpha legion, i think it reads too blue (at least in photos) rather than the teal/turquoise color im more used to. I initially thought they were ultramarines tbh when I first glanced at the photo. Something about the ultramarine rhino seems a bit off as well - it looks very good, I love the richness of the blue, but it also seems a tad dark - put a bit more red on there and I'd have thought it was a crimson fist. I would agree that some edge highlighting on the word bearers would help make it pop a bit more, I think the red is just a tad too dark against the black and thats why its not reading the way you want it to. Love the yellow on the Imp Fist. Men have fought wars and ended nations to discover the secrets to painting a b right lemony yello like that without spending years painting hundreds of super thin coats. I agree, White Scars in this scale look great and I've been really drawn to them as well. The Sons of Horus looks good, i dont think ive seen a bad SoH LI mini yet, it seems like a very good color scheme for the scale thats hard to screw up.

I see what you mean about the dark angels - good on you for making heavy use of white and red to provide something visually interesting, but I agree that the black still kinda reads flat - it looks good, but also feels like its missing dimension. I think, unfortunately, the key to making the black legions look good at this scale is going to end up being to not paint them black - use non-standard amounts of their secondary colors to brighten them up and provide more contrast, use darker greys or dark blues, etc. in place of actual black. If you're using contrast I think basilicum grey could work, might need a double-coating to get it sufficiently dark enough. Unfortunately, I think what you really need to do with the black minis at this scale is a very aggressive edge highlight to create that depth. I'm not sure that you can cheat it with drybrushing or undershading/slapchop techniques. That highlighting/shading unfortunately also extends to needing to do the secondary markings/colors in a similar manner - the white looks fine, but I think the red needs. a brighter orange edge highlight, including on the diagonal stripe across the top Another weird thing is that it looks like the highlighting on the black is actually around the recesses rather than the edges? Like it looks like a reverse highlight/the highlights are in the "negative space" that should be shaded, and the raised edges look darker than the inside corners?

Fantastic work guys! Albertorius, those Russes are just Honestly, those would be well painted at 28mm!

The little Fists are great too, love the old armour mark it suits them really well.

AllSeeingSkink - love that you have properly done the Rhinos, that's a good way of deciding. I like the Whitescars, lovely deep read and really pops with the white. If it's not too onerous I think a tiny bit of weathering would add to it, but the 'factory fresh' works well as well. Lovely deep blue with the UM and the SoH looks nice as well actually, like the contrast with that deep green/teal and the gold looks really nice. So in answer, you need to do all legions

I have painted up some Fire Dragons - these are classic Falcon tanks (I have mounted on bases to appear that they are hovering) and Vanguard Miniatures 'Eloi' range for the Dragons infantry.

Thanks for the comments!

The Alpha Legion have a subtle purple shade as they are purple drybrushed blue drybrushed blue mixed with pastel yellow (inspired by the novels where they are described as purple shade rather than green shade), but the camera doesn't really pick up the purple (all the other colours look pretty accurate in the picture, except the purple for some reason). That said, the purple is subtle and from a distance of a couple of feet it doesn't stand out in person either. Ages back I tried a few metallic Alpha Legion schemes and could never get something I was happy with that didn't take far too long on Epic scale models, so figured I'd try a non-metallic version that's somewhat inspired by the artwork in the new rulebook and also the HH Aeronautica book where they are less metallic looking and more just blue -> yellow transition. Though I could see how they could get mistaken for bright Ultramarines rather than AL.

The Ultramarines were somewhat inspired by the old Epic 40k Armies Book cover, and the blue on that is on the darker side.

I think HH Ultras are generally darker anyway, aren't they?

The Imp Fists, I think they look too much like lemons. But if you like that, it's white undercoat, skeleton horde all over, drybrush bone (I used Vallejo's Bonewhite), very light drybrush with pure white, then Imperial Fists over that. Pretty fast to do.

The Dark Angels, yeah, they're "negative highlighting", it's a concept that is used more in historical models where if you're going for a photo-realistic model it's not really appropriate to edge highlight. So instead, people use grey washes or pigments to lighten the crevices as if dust or grime has fallen into them. I have seen the same basic idea used on Forge World models also when they try to go for gritty realism more. Maybe it didn't work as I was hoping, but the idea was that maybe I could push a panel-wash harder than I could push an edge highlight before it looked "wrong".

Anyway, I think the conclusion is I just do them all? That's one nice thing about 3D printing I guess, not a big deal to just throw in a random formation from a different chapter as once the models are set up in the slicer there's very little work required to just print out another dozen or two.

I'll PM you the source ^^

As for the recipe, well, I'm trying to go for "minimum effort, maximum return", so it's much easier that it looks... basically white primer and three colors:

- XPress Armor Green directly over the primer for the camo stripes.
- XPress Battledress Brown thinned 1:1 with medium over the whole mini.
- Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal Grey for all the metal parts.

And that's mostly it!. After that I did a light wash all over with "Marine Juice" for added definition, and pinwashes with a couple oils (mostly dark oxide for the tracks and guns, light oxide to add the birghter orange, which I find adds a lot at the scale, and some grunging up with brown), and that's that.

They look really nice. Was thinking of changing to a brighter "sand" tone for my orange camo IG/Solar Auxilia to create a bit more contrast. Might give your recipe a go instead.

Yep, they have versions both with and without sponsons. I just happened to prefer the sponson version for my current army at least.

sorted, they do look the cats pyjamas it has to be said, may I trouble you for a hint as to the not quite trademarked name they live under?

have a fair bit of stuff for the XIV still to paint but will be adding to my Auxilia in the not too distant future and they look spot on to run alongside the Baneblade I have.

Going for a 365 day Hobby Streak throughout 2024.

Made a start today assembling my Contemptors (not as fiddly as I feared, but still a bit fiddly), and the Missile Launchers. As you can see I kept the Marines on-sprue by a tactical sprue bisection.

Tomorrow’s activity will be getting them base sprayed. Unsure if I’ll rattle can or air brush. Might even do more than that. As I’ll be working phases of spraying seems the best idea to maximise activity, as I can spray front and back, leave to dry, do more work, then rinse and repeat until it’s all done.

Given the super simple paint jobs I’m planning, should be able to crack this all out by the end of the week.

And once they’re done and I can properly visual my collection, maybe consider writing a list.

Also got my tanks built from a few weeks back.

first two of those (not) Leman Russ

sweet mother of a thing with a mother, they are essentially professional quality sculpts, the guy is a genius, the only bit missing is they are solid not "scooped" but frankly it hardly matters

Also on the Marine Infantry? Three of the Assault Marines have channels on their Jump Packs as well as their feets.

Quick tactical clipper application and clean up and good to go for spraying.

Found a really simple paint job too. Spray black. Tickling dry brush of Incubi Darkness. Then tone down the gun and backpack vent with Black Templar. Another tickling “top bits only” dry brush with a gunmetal. Then pick out the vents in same gunmetal.

the models do seem really designed for painting on the frames with a quick paint job to look, well actually pretty good. base & drybrush, base & wash and done

plus the benefit of Mk VI armour is how little bling there is, still have my marines to do, the Auxilia are amazing though, waiting on a delivery with primer and hope to have a run at the marines this week. not anticipating more than an evening per sprue of them

Plus no rim on the shoulderpads, which helps getting them ready faster and easier.

Sprues are definitely well thought out. I may get clip them down into strips. Should make them easily accessible to the brush, and provide a decent handhold for me.

Likewise I can’t see a box worth taking much more than an evening to blitz through, which is nice.

On the down side, that rim is what I normally use to create a contrast colour At this scale, it's not a huge deal to just paint the shoulder pad rim with a single colour (no highlights or shades) or maybe 2 colours (midtone + highlight or base + midtone).

Welcome to the thread MDG! Is it Dark Angels you are going for then?

Yes these new guys are certainly super fast to paint, I like that they are single piece for the most part too (I'll live with the undercuts and as has been pointed out a quick snippet clip can resolve the ones which are visible).

I did start painting mine on the sprue, but I'm lazy and now base them first (although that's partly because I'm doing sand/grass basing and don't want to accidentally paint completed minis)

those ultramarines minis look fantastic.

still trying to figure out how to make raven guard look anywhere near that good. I'm starting to realize I'm going to have to deviate from their standard scheme a bit and make not only more use of white as a secondary color, but also probably grey (or another color) for trim in order to give them depth. It really seems like you need at least 3-4 colors minimum to make your little dudes recognizable as something other than a tiny blob.

Dark Angels indeed!

To paint, I’m gonna do…

Step 1 - Mechanicus Standard Grey spray
Step 2 - Army Painter Gun Metal lightly drybrushed
Step 3 - Army Painter Speed Paint Grim Black all over.
Step 4 - Collect Underpants
Step 5 - Back with the Gun Metal on casings and vents and that.
Step 6 - Army Painter Vampire Red on right shoulder pad, just for a splash of colour
Step 7 - Profit!

Went a bit mad this morning and really broke down a sprue, thinking it would make painting quicker. And whilst I’m not convinced I was entirely wrong? I think in hindsight for sheer speed and efficiency, the layout is good enough to keep them whole for spraying, then break them down for brush application.

Technically I could call today’s Hobby (insert Simon Quinlank) the purchase and planning bit. Because both are hobby. But if I can find that blutak I know is here somewhere? I can get some spraying done. Weather is foul outside, but I reckon the back door is suitably sheltered enough to prevent gusts.

Balls. I knew there was something else I wanted in the shop. Kitchen Roll.

Can’t Bally well drybrush without out! Plenty of daytime left though, so will nip out once I’ve had a snack. And might as well grab blutack whilst I’m at it, then I’ve no excuses.

Was going to have a look at putting my Mk VI together, just found one of the sergeant models is AWOL, and a few rocket launchers are lose in the box

can cope

whats a bit worse is some models have clear stress discolouration from being bent and squashed flat in the box and a fair few have only weak attachment to the sprue which will make priming a pig

also how many parts for the Contemptors?

put them back in the box for now, may trade them locally for something else

and on spray boxes.. if you know anyone who moved house, the larger cardboard boxes make for good spray boxes, good at blocking the wind, just stick a brick or two inside them to keep the box on the ground

Contemptors aren’t as fiddly as they look. At least in my opinion.

Importantly, there’s tongue and groove mountings for the hip joints.

Only breakage thus far for me is a back banner.

oh its not that they look difficult, just a bit over the top, nothing to say a 2mm finescale railway wagon

thing is I have them, and I have STL files, and while the plastic ones do look nice, they also look like more work

Hoping that, if my intended recipe works as hoped, I’ll be able to get all my infantry painted tomorrow, and based on Thursday/Friday.

Either way I’ll be spraying the relatively few tanks I have Friday, hoping to do them over the weekend.

Now at the stage of digging out my tools.

Water pot filled with filtered water. Brush soap located. Do need to grab a larger brush for the Speed Paint stage, but those are in my Magic Box O’Stuff, a solid walnut chest filled with all sorts of gubbins.

As you can see, going to blitz the Tactical Marines first. Blutak is simply there to hold them vertical whilst drying.

But before I go further? Lunch, and maybe a run to Sainsbury’s or Asda to get bits to make a wet palette.

Yeah the pic helps doesn’t it!

And calling it a day. All 8 bases worth of Tactical Legionnaires done.

Right pauldron is a just a splodge of Vampire Red, wriggled into looking vaguely like an emblem.

Tomorrow I’ll do the Terminators and other power armoured infantry.

As a formerly dedicated non-painter, I’ll admit to being rather chuffed with myself.

I mean, LI scale is hardly difficult to paint. But to actually put them to the brush has been very enjoyable.

The right pauldrons ended up just getting somewhere between a splodge and a squiggle of the red. Enough to suggest an emblem.

Right. I’m off to spray the bases. Might as well get those done tonight, as the other infantry are up tomorrow, and I might do the bases as well, just get these two boxes entirely cleared.

Waddling through the IG infantry... kinda "angry" that so much work costs so little points and die so very fast xD
