Backstreet Boys. There. I said. I'm sorry some of those songs are just so damn catchy. It's like an insidious disease that infects you and won't let you go!
There aren't really nands I'm ashamed to like, but there are some that fit the category of 'I know they're a bit mediocre, but I like them anyway'.
Green Day to an extent. I'm not at all a punk fan, but American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are albums that, for all their musical simplicity, I really like. The rest of their stuff, I don't really care for outside of a few songs.
Bon Jovi, again, I appreciate that it's nothing particularly technical, but for something to listen to without thinking about too deeply, it's hard to beat his early stuff.
A few pop songs that are played on the radio, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, hell, even that One Direction song is kinda catchy.
I listen to Metal- and Deathcore normally.
I enjoy Katy Perry as well and I'm not ashamed to admit it... I have all of her albums and I've seen her on concert (which was spectacular, by the way).
She's about my only "guilty pleasure" musician except other than Linkin Park; I have every reason not to like them but I can't help enjoying their music.
Sarah McLachlan*
Lisa Loeb*
Ini Kamoze
Kittie
Katy Perry
My music collection leans heavily towards German Industrial, rock, and classical music so the pop music above stands out and has caused me to blush a few times when acquaintances were looking over my play lists.
*Less ashamed by these artists than I have been given endless crap by friends and significant others for having their albums in my collection.
I'm not ashamed with anything I listen to, but one that I'm not exactly proud of either is Tha Dogg Pound. That's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. But in the words of the immortal bards Kurupt and Daz Dillinger, don't ever use language like this on dakka. Reds8n
Also, in certain circles I tend to keep to myself that I prefer Michale Graves over Glenn Danzig, but I'm not one bit ashamed of it. I just don't want to hurt feelings.
Sigvatr wrote: Nothing. Why would I be listening to music I was ashamed of?
Take it easy. This is just a 'guilty pleasures' thread. I'm 39 years old. I'm not actually ashamed of anything but (a) my obsession with Boys II Men, ABC, and BBD (East Coast Family), and (b) the size of my Necron army, as the world starves.
What's wrong with Huey Lewis? I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics!
Maybe the problem is that I don't feel guilty about most of my guilty pleasures. If I had to pick one though, mine is Angels and Airwaves. ...yeah.

Motley Crue
KISS
The B-52s
Chris Isaac
Duran Duran
Enya
Huey Lewis and the News
Michael Jackson
Robert Palmer
Shabba Ranks
Warrant
Poison
Kix
The B-52's first album is a New Wave masterpiece so that band has credibility and Michale Jackson's "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" albums both have a considerable amount of critical respect plus his music is super infectious, other than that you should be ashamed by the rest of those
SilverMK2 wrote: Why would you ever be ashamed of loving KISS and Poison?
I'm not sure about Poison... but I'd defintiely be ashamed of liking KISS.
KISS is basically the "Britney Spears" or "Justin Bieber" of rock/metal. They put out fairly "crap" music that is easily sellable and palatable to a large audience. Of course, KISS does, apparently from what I've been told, put on a kickass live show, which I can't really say for the more pop type artists.
On topic:
Elton John.
I don't own any of his records, but he makes some seriously catchy tunes and you kinda cant help but sing along. And, like jasper, I'm also a Slayer fan
I will never be ashamed of liking Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Amon Amarth, Conquering Dystopia, Megadeth and the like.... Maybe Metallica, but they haven't put out an album since 1991, so I don't know what all these kids are talking about "new" stuff for

I never was into KISS until I went with a friend to see their Reunion tour to see what the hype was all about. It's not hype. Now they're not Slayer or anything in terms of making you forget you're a human being, but in terms of bombs and fireworks and so forth, I've never seen anything like it....and it makes you think about their music in a whole new way. Of course, they're senior citizens now, so who knows, but when I saw them, it was something to behold.
I wouldn't say ashamed per say. But I have a remarkable weakness for the songs of the Wu Tang Clan, and ODB's solo stuff as well.
That and I can't get this
Spoiler:
Out of my bloody head!!
But apart from that, nothing really. Oh Britney Spears I quite like.. Hey this internet anonymity is pretty darn cool... My usual music of choice would be Metallica, AC/DC, Slayer, Zepplin, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Pink Floyd etc etc. With a smattering of Tool, The Clash, Clutch and some Whitesnake..
I actually do like Fleetwood Mac quite a bit. I don't know if that's lame or not.

There is certainly no shame in enjoying the Wu. On top of being AWESOME, they're also one of the most literate hip hop acts ever.
I like loads of music, however, Amon Amarth is one of my favorite, my current wife says if she had known I liked them she would not have married me... Satan worshipping junk she says, I'm like it's not either, it's about war and such I say, it is Viking themed... Coolness. So I listen to my great music on my own in the man cave or the car by myself.
I guess I don't care what people think about my taste in music so I'm not ashamed.

If she had called it Odin worshiping or Thor worshiping, she may have had a point
Similarly, I recently played some Ghost for my wife, and she's like "I kinda like them" (she's a christian), so I respond with, "you do realize that their schtick is that they're Satanists, and all their songs are about Satan rising, etc.... right?"

I saw them in concert.
I also saw Genesis and Dennis DeYoung (the former lead singer of Styx)... I do adore ABBA, they're the only band I own every album they made on vinyl so... I'm a tad more then a casual fan lol

ODB was "as rugged as burnt buildings in Harlem" The Wu are indeed awesome, and GZA's "Liquid Swords" is one of my favourite albums.
This. Do I understand the lyrics? Not really but dang their music is catchy...
Also ashamed to like Backstreet Boys, Human Nature and S Club 7 among others (Which is weird as I'm typically not into that kinda stuff, but I suppose it has something to do with their music being a part of my childhood)
On a similar not, people tell me I should be ashamed because I like Fun. and some of Paramore's music, but I don't (feel ashamed, that is).

There is nothing wrong with the bands in the OP's list....except Warrant. That gak is lame. If he had written 'Nelson', I would lobby for a full one month ban.
Kingdom Come, the German Led Zeppelin rip-off band from the late 80s, is my only skeleton music closet occupant at the moment. Saw them live opening for the Scorpions in 88 or 89 baked out of my mind and thought I had time traveled to see Page et al. circa 1976.

Well, a lot of Dakka users have left their 20s, so have gone through the 90s fully aware of their surroundings and the 90s culture...and you could not get past the Backstreet Boys. And - well, let's face it. They made good music. Same as Nickelback imo. It's not deep, far from it, but it had catchy tunes, was well-written and could be enjoyed without paying too much attention to the music on its own. Just like Nickelback. When you're out on a joyride on a sunny afternoon, we just put it some Nickelback and enjoy the ride.
Yeah, I am 39. I never got into Nickelback or the Backstreet Boys, even though I've been aware of both...when it comes to the "radio pop" end of the musical spectrum, I usually prefer female vocalists.
In any case, I was just making a light-hearted comment. 40k doesn't exactly scream 'Backstreet Boys', if you know what I mean.

36 here
Hah, you were totally into Britney Spears. Gotcha.
I don't mind listening to Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus on the radio. I also like Avril's music. Other than that, I love Offspring and Alkaline Trio. While I'd consider the first three "shameful" likes, being a 29yr old guy, I'm quite proud to like the last two.
Also, seriously...Ke$ha?? Ye gods, man; have you no shame?!

I dislike Nickelback because even though they're competent it's in service to some of the most safe, dull, cliche music out there which is definitely not what I want to hear when listening to a rock group.

I wouldn't say I'm ashamed of anything I listen to. I can stand anything outside of rap/hip hop, which just isn't for me.
I'm pretty fond of grunge though, so I listen to a lot of Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Foo Fighters. But my collection is pretty varied, including a lot of pop like Taylor Swift and Jessica Mauboy.
Just depends on the mood at the time of listening. I get super bored listening to the same styles forever.
@Loki: I think you just haven't found the particular hip/hop rap act thats suits your disposition yet. I used to hate it with a passion, and think all people who liked it should burn in a raging inferno of righteous holy flame, until I heard an act that caught my fancy.. i think still that its one of the lowest forms of music out there still to this day, but there are some gems in the rough!
If I like music its good (for me)- and I have nothing to be ashmed off.
I enjoy a wide range from Sisters of Mercy to the Saturdays, Prince to Girls Aloud, the Cure to Madonna. Classical music I like alot of and the odd Opera
There are however some I actively dislike - I can't stand anything to do with Oasis.........musically or otherwise

Another one that falls in the category of 'musically crap, but I like them anyway' for me. Sometimes, there's nothing like a bit of technically dull, somewhat repetitive music to just listen to without having to pay attention. Funny enough, though, from the 1 album they've done, I prefer Noel Gallagher's band to Oasis themselves.
On a side note, I heard a Nickelback song I actually liked today! I've always hated their music, but 'How you Remind Me' is actually pretty decent when put alongside some similar-sounding better stuff.
I like, nay adore, Meat Loaf. Not the dish. The singer, sometimes the man. Ever since I heard I would do anything for love (but I won't do that), I was hooked. Mind you, that was the tender age of 14 and you are vulnerable to the heartache at that age.
I raged when Celine Dion released It's all coming back to me now, because Jim Steinman gave her not only the lyrics, but also the whole damn band to record it.
I cringed when he was on The Apprentice (I blame editing and tv drama!).
Everyone tells me I should be ashamed, deeply ashamed... but there persists to this day a free space on my credit card for whenever he pulls up the Neverland Express next to the Bell Centre (or any venue within a day's drive, for that matter)
A last word in defense of Meghan Trainor. She is singing how wonderful it can be to love being a normal sized individual. If it makes my wife smile even a little bit, I salute her.

Superficially, maybe. However, if you read the lyrics, her message is "don't worry, there are men who will think you're hot" which isn't exactly what a girl should base happiness with her body off of.
My wife also loves that song, much to my annoyance.

Nothing wrong with Meat Loaf, he's brilliant musically and lyrically, and Bat out of Hell has to be one of the greatest albums of all time!
I seem to have a softer spot for Japanese music after visiting Tokyo it seems lol.
I'm a rock n' roll kind of guy. From Zeppelin to Zombie. Avid rock concert goer as well. Play bass.
That said, when I was in Japan I became intrigued by vocaloids. It's fun escapism and culturally fascinating.
"Love is War" isn't just a good Miku song, but a good song. Period.

I'm pretty much the same, minus the playing bass, I have no musical talent whatsoever haha.
I knew who Hatsune Miku was due to the Gadget shows world tour Japan episode but never gave it much thought, just that it was pretty cool. Who would have thought I'd end up with a mild addiction so many years later haha. Not really ventured to other vocaloids yet but quite like Hagane Miku too, fits more into my usual music choices shall we say lol.

Depends on the song, but most for me are fine. That said, my two favourites of theirs are fully instrumental...

Still more positive (because it is truthier) than the "be rail thin so everyone will love you" mentality. Because you can never be loved by everyone. So yeah, so guys will not like you, just keep walking. Imho. Who knows, she might be happier with a drummer after all.

I have Bat Out of Hell II on 8 track. I love bringing this fact up in conversations.
None, I like almost every genre of music and I see no point in being ashamed.
Hell, if I consult my usb stick in the car right now:
Rammstein
Limp Bizkit
Uppermost
Happy Super Joy Soundtrack
Studio Killers
Imogen Heap
Electric Six
Machinae Supremacy
Entire Frank Klepacki Discography
Frank Zappa
King Crimson
Flower kings
Spocks Beard
Queens of the Stone Age..
Etc. Can't remember the entire list, it's 32 GB stick.
I see no reason to be ashamed of liking stuff that is objectively horrible, nostalgia or just being catchy makes it good to me and that's all I need to like it.

Yeah I'm pretty surprised to see so many Backstreet fans, makes me feel a bit less ashamed of my choices. (For the record, I totally liked Backstreet as a young kid, up til I started to develop my own musical tastes around the new millenium)
My all-time favourite band is... P.O.D. for a number of factors. I acknowledge that they put out their fair share of crap, but when they get it right, I really like their output. I also like them so much because of some heavy nostalgia. I had been stuck in a bubble for over a decade, listening to my parent's music, when I went to a week-long camp and the counselor was listening to Satellite all week. The songs basically got drilled into my head... I loved it. They were very different that what I had listened to the rest of my life up to that point. Hell, they were relevant at the time too and easily one of the best nu-metal bands, period. If nothing else, they introduced me to hard rock and metal music and coloured my tastes. I just wish they hadn't fallen off the map so badly after their self-titled album, because I feel like people will judge me for liking them so much.
Onto a band I actually feel ashamed to like: Evanescence. I don't even like them that much, apart from Fallen, but their music just screams "angsty teenager music". I feel like I have to turn it off whenever someone comes by to avoid any potential embarrassment.
Also... what's with all the people ashamed of Rammestien? I was under the impression it was totally cool to like them?
I can outshame you all. While I don't in my feeble defence add this artist to a list of those I like, and havent for a long time. I did however like it long enough to actually buy this album.
The CD has long been missing, and I never bothered to look for it. However I was back in '87 twisted enough to be able to rickroll myself whenever I pleased.

Funny how no one ever admits to liking Gangnam Style, yet it managed to get 2 billion views and become the most liked video on youtube. And people always seem able to pull out the dance with practiced ease when intoxicated -- I think everyone's lying.
