Yeah, from my reading of the email this morning, the promotion is just literally a decorated delivery box. I had to read it twice to be sure, because it seemed too ludicrous to be true.
This exclusive, limited edition Gift Box is free when you spend over £100, and we’ll pack it with as much of your order as will fit inside. Please note this product is not available to purchase.
Yup, just a box, not a "pricy" box given that its free...
If it was £10 to get a box then I don't think as many people would be complaining. But it's not £10, it's £100. £100 Gets you a box. Wow, someone help me take off my boxers, because I'm so wet they're stuck to my skin.
If it was an army box, with some foam inserts and the likes, then that'd be awesome, but no, it's. Just. A. Box. It's like saying "if you spend £30,000 on this new car, we'll throw in a pair of fuzzy dice worth a whopping £0.50 free of charge!". There's no point trying to round up a purchase to £100 if all you're going to get in return is a box.

Really? So all the expensive stuff one has to buy to get said box is also free? Cool! Put me down for 8!

Personally, I see nothing upsetting or insulting about this. I doubt people will be ordering 100 quid worth of stuff just to get the box, but if you're gonna order 100 quid worth of stuff anyway, the box is a pretty nice touch.

So it's only as free as the P&P, which at £100 is usually free from most places anyway?
I'm surprised that no one is going ape Please don't bypass the language filter like this. Reds8n crazy over the coffee mug in a tin can that GW is selling for only $17. Actually, I'm not. Even though it comes in 4 different colors and contains a 'bitz box' that has can't have internal dividers of any sort... or else the coffee mug wouldn't fit. And the mugs are only for their paint line? Really? I'd buy this if the mug and tin had matching ork or necron art. Who wants a much that just says, "Citadel... Macragge Blue" on it?
Eh, I'm not all that fussed about it. I do think the box is a lousy encouragement for that much spending- it would have been better just as a surprise rather than advertising it like it's something exciting or special (i.e. a lot of companies decorate their holiday boxes without "selling" the fact). But still, it's not like it costs anything, so I don't really care.
That mug is silly expensive, but almost all of GW's peripherals are like this, so it's not a surprise.
Only GW could screw up making a mug. Rather than branding it with their beloved IPs they waste the name of their hobby line and insult hobbyists with a water pot tin box combo. Guess they really want Citadel to be a true brand name instead of people wondering why "Games WorkShop Paints" have Citadel on them. Just another step towards their exclusive line of high priced collectibles dream.
OgreChubbs wrote: it is almost like they are giving you something free and people are still complaining... oh wait they are....
There was a time when the freebies GW gave us were things we could actually use. A free box is practically an insult.
Oh no! The box your stuff gets delivered in is Warhammer-themed! I feel so insulted!
The insult is not that they're giving a free box, the insult is that they present this free box as a "promotion" of the "get it while supplies last!" variety.
I don't think it's worth getting upset over at all (I buy all my stuff second-hand anyway), but I can see how it would come as patronizing, you know? The box itself is totally harmless, it's just how it's presented to us, that's all.

if your buying yourself christmas gifts then a free box is not your only problem. It is there way of trying to say send this to a loved one and you do not need to ship to yourself and wrap it, order it and ship and your done.

Except it will only contain the stuff they can fit in the box. Everything else will be sent in standard packaging.

I can't think of a worse design for the mug/pot. I'd have totally bought one if it has something that wasn't awful on it (even an Imperium or Ork logo or something), and thrown the bits box in the bin.
It's not like you're being offered a free teabag if you buy 5 of them, either.
Are you kidding? Did you see what we did with the last shipment of Tea that came from the UK?
So you used a bit too much water, it's no big deal. Next time try and dial down the amount; even a shipment of tea doesn't need an entire harbour to prepare. It's also best if you boil the water first; harbours aren't exactly the best temperature for tea-making.
PhillyT wrote: Look, the internet cries about free stuff from GW!

It's slightly more involved than that.
Do GW get these special boxes printed for nothing? I'm pretty sure they don't do any in-house printing at all, so that's not only the cost of production but someone else's profit on top.
Where do you think that cash is coming from?
Therefore, they are spending money they're not especially blessed with at the moment, on crap that nobody asked for but will have paid for in part if they'd made any sort of purchase from them recently, that offers no use.
Then we can move on to the fact that it is a stupid idea and unlikely to incentivise anyone, when they could have perhaps produced an exclusive mini, which given they own the whole design and production process most likely wouldn't have been hugely more expensive than buying daft boxes from a packing company and would have been a genuine incentive for some people (if only to sit on and sell in ebay down the line.)
It isn't that it's free or not, it's that it is a stupid idea.
It's not a free box first of all. This "free gift" costs you the difference in discounts you aren't getting because you choose to buy from GW direct. Do people still do that? Why would you not get 20% off from warstore or something similar?
So, no, this box is not free. It costs you 20% of your order.

Sure...but I have a hard time believing that most people gave it that much thought.
It's mostly just "They are trying to trick us with a box! You can't trick us with a box! Aargglebarrgle!!"
If you go in person to their stores this month, any purchase you make is also accompanied by a one-of-a-kind printed receipt.
It will detail the items you purchased and to commemorate the date and time that you participated in everyone's favorite part of the hobby (buying Citadel products).
Some customers will even get special purple striped receipts with their purchase but those are even more rare. Hurry in now before receipt paper runs out!
That there are people saying "I think it's OK" shows exactly how low the expectations of some fans have become.
I can only assume that if we ever went back to the days of "buy 2, get 1 free" with rules/box sets or offered free downloads of something their heads would actually explode.
alphaecho wrote: All the fuss over a free box...I just don't get it.
It's because GW are making a fuss over it. What a load of fething gak, it's actually pretty funny quite how poor this is. Similar to the one click army 'deals', this deserves every bit of scorn and ridicule that it is thrown its way.
I actually wonder if its designed to fool people into thinking that they are getting some kind of free offer, because (like the OP) you probably couldn't believe that a circular would be sent out over a cardboard box with a picture printed on it.
So this box is worthy of a promotional email, but the cool little End Times-freebies* GW have been giving out lately get no mentions anywhere. Or have I just missed them?
*I got a Nurgle-themed button with my last order and a little Nagash-themed notebook with the one before that.
Except they're not giving it away for free, they're paying someone for it, and they're using your money to do it. Money that isn't being spent on rules development, miniature design, extra staff, suppressing prices etc, etc..
There is no such thing as a free lunch, and just because they're not charging you for it doesn't mean you're not paying for it.
stormboy wrote: If you are buying a bunch of stuff anyway, getting something for free is better than getting nothing for free...
If you have no plans on buying anything, well... I guess you wouldn't get anything regardless.
Which makes it a lousy incentive.
It would be nice if they just did it, with no fanfare and just let people be surprised when it arrived, which I dare say many other companies will do over the next few weeks across all sorts of sectors, but they're promoting limited edition packaging.
It just boggles every commerce orientated part of my brain.

I agree, ordering something and getting something extra with a little card and note is cool, especially if it wasn't advertised.
This "promotion" is certainly half baked, and quite lame... but at least it is something. Sort of like the exclusive marines... you had to pay a bunch to get access to the exclusives... but at least you could use those promotions during games.
I still think it is better than nothing. Which is what we would normally get.
When they would have spent cash on having the boxes printed instead of any number of other things (as relatively inconsequential amount as it may have been) I would rather it was nothing.

It really shouldn't.
You understand that the Christmas season is coming up. Things like this are functionally no different than the "Gift Wrapping Kiosk" that a large number of department stores have. Given how hamfisted they went for online bundles this year, alongside of the emphasis they put on the in-store ordering point, the gift lists that they have people fill out at their stores, etc--this is actually a pretty logical move.
But hey. Let's just keep complaining that they're packing things in a special box.

Well, you don't have to spend £100 to get things gift wrapped at a kiosk either, you just pay a fiver or whatever. And they don't advertise it as if it's some awesome promotion.

This. A zillion times this. I don't understand why anyone buys direct from GW.
Its an insultingly crappy promotion, considering they're making more off each sale than they do through retail channels. At least Wyrd gives you exclusive minis when you get gouged for the extra 20-30% from not buying pretty much anywhere else.

Well, a lot of GW stuff is only available direct nowadays.
I dont see a problem but its a bit much pushing it as a promotion, although i guess technically it is one.

Actually it's kinda gross how much stuff is direct only now. Even plastic kits including everything from beastmen ungors to IG basilisks.
The mark up is so high on these items FLGS don't get any benefits from stocking the blank white boxes and a messily 20% of for retailer.
Meanwhile, the competition is priming up for special "Black Friday" releases and holiday bundles featuring competitive armies, rules, and tokens at a heavily discounted rate. So you, know, providing incentive to purchase versus a fancy box.
Don't forget- they aren't just offering a cardboard box, they're also offering a Christmas card.
Good god, it's just an awful promotion. I'd prefer to not get anything for free. Giving out a gakky cardboard box (which really isn't much better than the packaging the miniatures usually come in), is almost an insult. Crazy.
Insert "the more you tighten your grip, the more [customers] slip through your fingers" in reference to the massive number of kits in "direct-only."
Seriously, if they keep that up they will kill off most of their market share. Even the most ardent GW supporter often admits to buying at discount, I think the switch to direct only will only further the exodus of customers.
I'm also assuming this Christmas box does little (if not outright discourage) use of the GW B&M store, since I'm guessing things get bundle-shipped there.

Gift wrapping serves an actual purpose those; it saves you the hassle of wrapping the gifts to give to people. They are usually a couple of £ and are often for charities.
This is a one-size, one-use, pre-printed shipping box, with your address printed on the outside and the invoice inside. Are people really going to give *that* to someone as a present? To get the invoice out, you have to tear the strip on the box. If it doesn't all fit, they'll maybe put it inside another box, so that you need to wrap them separately anyway. It's also going to be a bit of a giveaway as to what's in the box if you left it under the tree.
Having a special edition box is a good idea, it's called advertising - I get all sorts of things delivered in branded boxes (but to be honest I'd pay more for GW to send me stuff in a plain box so my co-workers don't see me for the man-child I am), but as something to advertise and incentivise it's absolutely stupid. Would I buy another paint to get me over the threshold for the limited edition box? No way, so it completely fails at it's basic premise - to upsell.
As for actual Christmas promotions - most other gaming companies throw in some freebie (normally a metal Santa figure) or run an offer. I've bought all sorts of things I didn't need to get the promo deal or freebie. The other day I bought a few boxes of metal Zombies I have no actual need for because each box came with a free Limited edition zombie that was kinda cool. I buy books direct from Warlord for at least 20% more than anyone else because of the free figures. Hell I even bought a ton of Catachans to get a free blister of Ratlings at an official GW store opening once in the dark ages. That's how promos as supposed to work. But I won't buy anything direct from modern GW just to get a printed box.
They did have one great incentive/promotion recently, but never advertised it (because they don't like money?); if you bought Space Hulk from the webstore, it came with a limited edition A4 Space Hulk art print. People would totally have bought from GW direct for the print, if they knew it existed.
"But only if you order before they're all gone!"
... what?
Oh. Yes. I feel the... itch. The itchy itch that... itches. I need that box. Not.
This box will be my companion cube. My friend through all lows and highs of life. For about 10 seconds.
There will be many boxes like this, but THIS box will be mine. Until the trash collectors rip em away from me.
The things I'm gonna do to that box... I'll open it. Discard it. Never look at it again. The joy!
Maybe my cats will have fun hiding in that box. Before urinating in it like the buggers always do. And I won't even mind.
Oh, and adding insult to injury - if you happen to pay in €, you need to spend 150€ (about 125... where... where the feth did the Pound sign go...? What.... I...) so even 25% more to get that beautifully crafted piece of hard paper without any value whatsoever.
How dare they give you an interesting box for free with a moderately large purchase!
This discussion is exactly why GW shouldn't EVER listen to the internet. When there are legitimate issues, then complain. By complaining about nonsense issues, you pretty much degrade the ability for commentary to impact practice.
So, am I right in reading that you only get one special box with your order? GW will fit as much in the special box as they can, but overages...you know, they go in a normal box.

As stated before, it's not "for free" when you have to purchase a certain amount. They already give you a box "for free" to ship your stuff in (only if you buy $65 or more). Plus as stated before, you're paying 20% more for the privilege of purchasing directly from them. To tout a "free" box like this is just...well, asinine.
I really don't care anyway, I'm off the GW crack. No more abuse for me, I'm clean...for Infinity!

Either I miss your irony or you really don't get it. We're not really complaining here. Complaining would mean that you hope to achieve a betterment, and we're well past this point. No one expects GW to do a *good* promotion anymore.
It's just mocking GW for trying to make you buy something in by providing a printed box instead of the usual cardboard brown. There are probably less than 10 people in the world who'd order an extra pot of paint just to get a different cardoard box.

Most people aren't complaining about GW, they are mocking GW.
They are mocking GW because GW thinks that switching the box that they use to dispatch orders for another box is a an actual promotion that deserves its own advertisement. This is the stuff that comedy sketches are made of! "And if you buy more than 100 GBP you'll get this cardboard box for free! But then "fingers in ears, la-la-la" is good enough for GW....
Except of course that mocking is a complaint in this case. You mock because you are trying to make a commentary on what your perceive as a failed promotion.
It is a box. I called out empty, uncreative mockery as a hollow complaint. I read the thread, it wasn't exactly the most difficult thread to page through given the simple posts.
I am not even "defending" GW here. They are sending a special box if you buy a certain amount of models. How does that require mockery or even comment? It literally costs you nothing to get the box.
PhillyT wrote: Except of course that mocking is a complaint in this case.
Is it though? Is it really? Or are you just tacking new definitions on to words where you see fit to hold on to your argument?
You mock because you are trying to make a commentary on what your perceive as a failed promotion.
Or...maybe we mock because its worthy of being mocked? A failed promotion, by its nature, should be worthy of being mocked. It failed. It failed quite laughably at that. Therefore, mocking.

Love the quotes around it too.

Because they're promoting it. If we just got the box as a nice add-on and surprise, people would be happy. Sending out newsletters advertising that spending 'X' amount gets you a box is pretty ridiculous as promotions go. Maybe other people are used to companies using normal and sane business practices, where discounts or limited things are offered.
Clearly this thread is why GW shouldn't communicate with its customers and get feedback. Can you imagine what would happen if they were to even read this?

It costs you more than buying it from any other online discounter. Since GW ALSO makes more from direct sales than they do from other channels, you'd expect a decent promotion. Its further evidence of what a garbage company it is.
This isn't even as good as the crappy "jelly of the month" club Christmas "bonus" from Christmas Vacation.
There is no need for a special definition of anything. Call out absurdity within a community that has become so accustomed to complaint isn't really defending anything, it is commentary on a habit of pathetic whining that seems to have taken root.
An electronic newsletter pushing for holiday purchases makes the point that they will send moderate sized purchases in a special, decorative box. What is wrong with that?
You can get all manner of decorative shipping boxes. Some places even sell them. But since it is GW and plenty of people have decided it is a hobby in itself to sit and cry over every action and statement the company makes, a stupid shipping box becomes a source of a rumor discussion on Dakka Dakka? Awesome.

So you really think GW is actively going to compete with discount online retailers? They have already taken steps to reduce the discount sales. I don't know who honestly orders from GW direct, but that isn't really the point. If they felt they needed to compete with online retailers, they would likely take further steps to reduce those retailers ability to offer significant discounts. As it is they audit online retailers to ensure they are still selling through brick and mortar locations.

I have a ridiculous amount of boxes of all shapes and sizes... and if I did an order and got this box as a cool thing, I would be overjoyed... but the promoting it is lame. They have a picture on the website and in the app - which is fine - it is the email promotion that sends this to over the top levels.
Oh well. I don't really understand the ridicule or the rage on either side - and while I like the box (because I am a weirdo and love boxes) I think the promotion is a bit lame.

Awesome.
No-one is crying over it, unless there's tears of laughter.
As said; shipping stuff in fancy boxes over Christmas (or any time) is fine, no-one has a problem with that. GW sending an email to tell everyone about it as some special promotion is just lame, and requiring a huge purchase to get it at the same time is just lamer. It's a disposable box with some fancy printing on it, has no gift or collectors value, and is something that no other company in the world would offer as part of a promotion. It just doesn't do anything to drive sales.

An electronic newsletter pushing for holiday purchases makes the point that they will send moderate sized purchases in a special, decorative box. What is wrong with that?

I am not even "defending" GW here. They are sending a special box if you buy a certain amount of models. How does that require mockery or even comment? It literally costs you nothing to get the box.
Again, this just goes to show what a lame company GW is. When Wyrd runs their holiday promo, you get an exclusive figure and special effects minis like their clear plastic ghost/ice/shadow figures, etc. PP offers actual discount bundles and a rules book. GW offers... a box.
Its like a a hotel running a special that boldly announces you room comes complete with a pillow case for EACH pillow. Whoop de fart.
Everyone here is complaining about the wrong box..................
This is the box you all should be complaing about
The reason why is because its awesome. This project box is a pretty awesome thing for quick set up and break down as well as taking a project with you. Why you should be complaining is because it is quite useful IMO but for $66 make its a fething joke. Even for $33 its a joke. If this box was in the 20's I would own one but sadly for $66 this box is just something that I wish wasnt obnoxiously priced and want one just like the old GW bags
These???
Everyone I know who owns one loves them but they came with an attached price of NOPE.
The real complaint that everyone should have here is not the free cardboard (who cares really?) but the actually pretty cool products that they price in such a manner that makes it just obnoxious to own. If those project boxes were $25 I know about 20 people who would own one by now. This is the real shame about the holiday "box"

It's like an estate agent offering you a house for £999,000, but saying they'll throw in a free doorbell if you round it up to £1,000,000.
Right now if your order comes to £95, they're counting on the offer of a flashy delivery box to get you to round it out to £100+.
Then dont do it????
Really who cares what they offer? If its not good enough for you to change how you buy products then show them that by NOT BUYING ANYTHING. Its really a silly argument/complaint.

Im not going to be spending the money on it. My complaint is different as its something useful rather then just any old cardboard box. So no i will not be buying a project box because it is way overpriced. The difference is that one you get for free for ordering a specific amount of product and is utterly useless, the other is quite a useful product that is just way overpriced.
One is something worth having and the other is dumb. Thats the difference

No, it's not a silly complaint; GW thinks that we're all stupid enough to be tempted to spend more money in exchange for a box. If that's not flipping the proverbial Vs up at your customers then I don't know what is. I personally care because treating your customers as if they're brain-dead morons just doesn't sit well with me.

But $17 coffee cups that are free advertisement for them isnt stupid? What about taking the large carrying case and adding $5 to the price and calling it "special edition"?
Sure they are trying to get people to buy stuff to get a cardboard box is dumb but the box is inherently free while other products that you are actually paying for is just silly.

$8 for 20 pieces of paper...............
Paper plates cost what $1 at the bargan grocery store for 100? they are even bigger too. This is by far the WORST offering this year from GW
We expect overpriced stuff from GW. I've already complained in another thread about how they want $45 for the ebook version of the new Shield of Baal campaign, because the elections must be gold plated or something.
But to advertise their Christmas promotion as a special shipping box at a certain price point? That's just absurd.
Okay, new promotion everyone. Help me place an order that qualifies for wholesale discount with a chinese recaster, and when I ship you your part of the order, everyone will get not one, not two, not three but five extra cardboard boxes of various sizes! We have quite the influx of stuff where I work and these boxes are disposed of by the cubic meter every other week.
Size of cardboard boxes may vary. Color is special X-mas limited mulchpaper brown. Offer active while supply lasts! How does that sound for a promotion?

Its all absurd............thus our spending should reflect. Thats the #1 thing that needs to be done.

I very much fear to see what GW's version of step two would be.
Doesn't have to be anything THAT clever. You just put your credit card, bank card and wallet in the hole, and they "allow" you to keep playing the games produced by the best miniatures company in the world, packed in a special limited edition cardboard box, with a giant star-shaped target for the mailman to kick a hole in.
lol you guys suck man this much bitching about a box.... I am truly amazed your not all sitting in front of your computer waiting for the next thing that doesn't concern you to complain about...... oh ya you do lol.
IT IS A BOX get over it and move on this is almost as bad as those people complaining about getting free u2 music. Thats why when I sell on ebay I give a free go f yourself letter with every purchase.
Ending with IT IS A BOX who cares about it. love it hate it, it is a box GET A LIFE!! my geeze.
On topic last year when I bought something at walmart the bag was a different colour around Christmas so I did the normal thing I threw the bag screamed at the top of my lounges ran around complain then came home and complained on the internet how walmart gave me a bag that they spent my money on and I am mad and me me me.

Remember that post you made when you were up on your big moral podium, lamenting how you missed manners? At first I thought it was a flame-baity comment about how other people didn't have any, but now I can see it was simply because you don't have any yourself, and you obviously miss having them.
Don't worry, though, I'm sure that with a little effort you can find a new set of manners to utilise.

Dude we are at 5 pages of people complaining about a box..... a box. If no one else sees a problem with that... lol. They never said you needed the box they never said anything about the box except we will ship it to you in a christmas box after 5 pages of .
They are sp[ending my money on a box I gave them for a product and
I am mad cause they sent me a email I signed up for about a box I don't want.
At no time should you complain about something free that does not concern them especially a BOX. It just seems people on this website come here to complain every topic is about how they hate the new rules how they hate the old rules how they hate the way it was sent how they hate the models foot how they hate "fill in blank" now it is even the fin box....
No backpedaling on your manners statement from another thread?
I'll point this out again; had you actually read the thread, you'd find most people are simply shaking their heads and having a laugh at GW's expense.
I can't imagine anyone truly has their panties in a twist over a box. You have to give people a little credit, even on the internet, especially if you wish to be treated the same.

Tell me, did they just give you the bag, or did they email you about it and tell you it was an extra special super special secret extra awesome bag they only real customers would get because you had to spend squillions of spends to get it ?
Because if they didn't you completely fething failed to illustrate just one of the key points people have cited as a problem in this thread with your example.

Ya well page 3 I quit with these comments
"This. A zillion times this. I don't understand why anyone buys direct from GW.
Its an insultingly crappy promotion, considering they're making more off each sale than they do through retail channels. At least Wyrd gives you exclusive minis when you get gouged for the extra 20-30% from not buying pretty much anywhere else."

It costs 25% more than you potential order. 20 is one fourth of 80, so 100 is 125% of 80. Just saying.

I think by this point, though, anything that needs to be said probably has been. Let's put this one away as something special that we can dig out and look at fondly on cold winters nights.
