Been a while since I was here, but the progress looks great!!
I like the plasma particle effect you painted- good idea and great execution!
New orange looks way better, and the little stripes of black are exactly what the scheme needs. I'll echo the sentiments of everyone else and say to avoid too much chipping on the armor- keep that lovely orange color and leave the machine bits grimey and weathered!

Beautiful, and once again your innovative approach to painting is inspiriring. The orange over metallics, the scratch effects, the build-up and residue on the Plasma Mortar, all techniques that I've seen rarely (if ever) and am definitely adding to the list of things to try out.

Out of control, Damo. Your stuff is really looking amazing these days. There are no other words. I love the thought you put into things like the calcification of the back end of the plasma mortar. You should send some pics of your stuff in to Forge World. They show off stuff that people have painted from time to time.

14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Pretty pictures eh Whaley!? crikey dude I can't do that now until they're finished! :-) they're all at that stage where they've come together and look pretty damn good but I still have like one or two things left to complete on them all. This means I have only got to paint the orange armour and the orange robes as well as the Thallax face plates (which we discussed this morning) then whack on a bit of black contrast and voila! a fully finished Admech 30K army ready to kick ass and take numbers!!!!! Automatically Appended Next Post: And I also have nailed down at this stage a little project I've been toying with literally for years! I've been a massive fan of the idea behind Necromunda, the gritty hard skirmish battles and gangs of hardened guys and girls who just don't give a Rat's behind about 'nuffin
So, I'm going to paint up 2 gangs of Necromunda :-) for myself I'm painting the TGG Jailbirds as an Escher gang, lots of skin and bright accents on hair and cloth which will be fun! and the second one I'm thinking at this stage using the Scibor Sci Fi Dwarves? they're cool little models and would make a good gang of boiler type workmen who live in the greasy workings of a hive? any thoughts on other options hit me up! i'll be buying them start of next year

Good stuff! I'm personally not sure about the pose, but the paintwork is great! Do you mind sharing your recipe for Iron Hands armour, I've just started some and at the moment it's just prime black, drbrush silver, several heavy black washes then weathering. This looks similar, but a bit more involved and varied, which I could do with for characters.

Post by: Camkierhi
Not appeased at all.
Got to say though that metalwork is stunning, truly bud, stunning.
26790

This has nothing to do with your excellent paint job Damo... but that's just a horribly ungainly looking figure. In that pose a strong breeze would put him on his back.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks guys, the pose is awkward I admit especially when trying to take a pic! :-) it's Khan the betrayer from FW with a new arm and different head, irl it isn't as bad.
as far as painting him goes, it's the same technique as I do any of my weathered metals now. Prime silver, wash with black, wash with agrax, wash parts with purples or greens if you want a tinge to the metal, add chips and scratches and some watered orange around bolts etc. wash with black then re apply some fresh chips! done!

Finished the Admech force for Whaley! and they are very VERY cool models! tried a few little different things than my normal painting like the plasma glow and the Thallax face plates etc. and it comes together really nicely with the burnished metals and orange spot colour for them, they really are covered in a glut of glorious details which might seem daunting to paint but it seems to be a background element from the main components so you can pull back a bit on cabling and dials and it still doesn't effect the finished look
as usual there's a bunch of pics but I hope you don't mind! I really (as usual) hope you like them and get inspired to have a crack at something yourself! I just love FW models!

I wasn't going to do anything today, but I felt the urge to start to get a feel for the Grey Knights so I figured i'd start with the HQ Kaldor Da'mo I started thinking i'd theme my GK's in a Scottish feel with rich tartans and bearded brawling bastards! but as I began I got the feeling they needed to be worn and dirty and the model itself was telling me what colours were needed
I've based all the colours and started washing the shades on as well as replacing his sword which I tried to straighten and broke I liked the look of the Halberd with his pose and have just loosely placed it in for the pics before I prime it.

in no particular order:...........

* Sporadic Imperial Fist painting for fun
* HH 30K Salamanders army for Whaley, Troops and Fliers.
* Grey Knights army
* Five Tanks for my Flesh Eaters, Baal,Vindi, Pred, Razorbacks etc.....
* Kastelan Robots to finish Whaley's Admech
* another batch of random models for BigH's boy LittleH
* full Secret Weapon Miniatures 6x4 Urban Ruins board
* Terrain for table including buildings, rubble and scratch built

Thanks Solar, I liked the green sort of buildings and wanted to match the board and buildings to sort give the impression the buildings were built from the surrounds.

Not much Styro, it really is mainly just scratches sandwiched between layers of washes if you want a part shinier for a highlight then overbrush some gold lightly on between layers and use different coloured washes to add some variation

Hey guys, Nerdfest needs our help. He asked me what he could build with his BA army to see off part of it for some extra money (not to me this time). I suggested making a competitive list using drop pods, but I'm not very current with the meta at the moment. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a proper pod list these days?

Post by: nerdfest09
I've got them at home in the process of packing them up and sending them on their way, it's a big job :-( my mates have all been incredulous as to why i'm selling such a labor of love after nearly 8 years of work on them but I have to be an adult sometimes, I need to save 10grand this year and I needed something to bump start me.
I'm still, as I mentioned, going to paint marines and still buy and collect but just not as much, I've already got enough to keep me going with my Grey Knights and Orks and Whaley's Sallies :-)
I've still got some primed BA stuff to sell, mainly a bunch of tanks and some marines and DC so I might just go chuck them up on swappy shop and see if anyone wants them! I've advertised the other models locally but people only want a tank here and there and are offering next to naught :-(
The other thing for my hobby this year is a positive thing, I'm totally re doing my work space and storage areas so I'll be more organised and if I know myself it will spur me on to get stuck into the paint again :-) new shelves/display and a new painting desk which means I can move my old desk into the garage for a terrain painting and building area so I can do larger messier work!

To be honest with you, that board is looking quite nice as is. But I do agree that it can use some more touches. From my point of view, judging by the pictures, I feel like that board could really benefit from a good 'dirtying', be it through careful washing or use of weathering powders, and perhaps for the road an overbrush or something with a brighter colour? To me the board looks great but the only thing I think it really lacks is depth.
Let that in no way bring you down, the board is coming along brilliantly, and obviously there are elements of depth across the board - the airbrush shading is accurate and effective, but I think that next level could be achieved if you went at it carefully with a brush as well. Just my thoughts. At the end of the day its your table and you of all people know what best to do with it
I have the upmost faith in yer advances with the board, whatever they may be Hope this got the creative juices flowing if nothing else

Post by: Eggroll
Nice work nerdy. I agree with lips that the board needs some more contrast. A wash should do nicely to bring out all the cracks and creases.
77159
Post by: Paradigm
I would say the roads could go either lighter or darker for some more contrast, and in either case, adding some yellow or white road markings might help there as well, On the whole, it's looking great!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks guys, you all pretty much echoed my own thoughts, some washes and dry brushing should be the way to go! i'll try and do some more tomorrow.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Looking fantastic Damo. I think the "dirtying" should do the trick nicely.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
If you wanted more details, you could add some yellow lines or dashes down the middle of the roads, and maybe some metalics on the storm drains and man hole covers. Some oily water effects in the deeper craters might work as well.
115
Post by: Azazelx
Weathering powders mixed with water/medium and some matt varnish can be applied in the gutters and craters, etc for a nice effect as well. Once it dries, it's matt but leaves a great look.
27147
Post by: Solar_lion
And to add to the suggestions.. darken the roads a bit more to provide an additional level of contrast. ( ie. dirty them even more than the rest. )
Love the leaflets!

it seems that since the decision was made to part ways with my FleshEaters my blood is running a shade of green again....... I can feel the need to paint Ork Boyz tugging strongly, since I finally got them on a shelf all together and I see them as a force I love them crazy fools! :-)

Well, first day having a paint on my new desk the light is definitely the best bit! o much better to paint and pic under!
I washed all my boyz and began the BattleWagon and then got into the Weirdboy, I wanted to start again with a stand alone model and he seemed like a good pick the details in under his jacket are a bit confusing partly sculpt, partly messy finecast but I've made the parts darker and bought his face to the fore as the focal point as well as his staff in his hand.
he's fun to paint and i've stayed with the darker scrapyard style of the rest of them trying to get an oiled leather look to his clothes and trappings

Howdy guys, I finally have some update stuff to show you again!
I've got s few weeks from work and the time so far has been happily spent caring for a litter of 7 five week old Samoyed puppies and their mum! so currently I have 11 dogs at home
today though I pulled out my hobby box and built a chaplain for my Imperial Fists army not for any real reason other than I really like the idea of the Chaplains and love the imagery of them, not really liking any of the current offerings I had previously bought a Legion of The Damned Sarge and I now went about doing a small conversion so he had a crozius of sorts I like the helmet and pose very much on this guy and used the leg flame and helmet crest to mark him out as an Imperial fist at a glance do you think I should paint the flames on the greaves light at the bottom blending into darker points? or light points leading down to dark at the bottom? I personally think lighter at the bottom would look better and help accentuate the models shape?
Next up is a pretty boring two photos of a few boys with their first coat of green, still a bunch more to go..........
and a little more exciting work is the progress on the Battle Wagon it's now been washed and the first layer of scratches have been applied, it's starting to come together and look like it's going in the right direction next she'll be washed again and given a bit of the 'ol orange rust wash to give those rivets a bit of aged corrosion also had my very first play with the GW Technical paint 'Blood for the blood god' just a small amount as if they hit someone in the Wagon.
So that's a start again it's now going to be a challenge to decide whether to work on the chaplain (who is yet to be named....... ) or the Wagon.....or the Boyz.....
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Love that Chaplain so far! Flames should probably light at the base, fading darker as you go up, that's how actual flames work, and it looks best anyway.
Will you be darkening the armour?
115
Post by: Azazelx
The boyz look great so far as usual. With the Chaplain it depends on how you'll be painting the armour. If you're going to have black greaves, I tend to go yellow at the tips of the flames which makes them stand out more (even though as Para points out, flames work the other way) but it really depends on whether you want them to pop more from the feet or the mid-greave.

I have a lot of distractions around me at the moment, well seven distractions that look like this
but thankfully Nerdwench takes over and I get a chance to sit for a bit and do some Nerd stuff Like today for instance I got the main body of the Wagon done and now only have the claw and crew to paint up! and it looks cool and heavy, battered and used!
I have also really really immersed myself into how I view and appreciate the Imperial Fists Pious and stoic, stubborn and methodical which led me to want to add another chaplain to the force, I raided through my bits box and models and decided to convert something cool, I grabbed the BA Libby and got cutting, not a huge amount of changes just subtle ones that really mark him as a reclusiarch of renown
still more to add, like his storm bolter and some gap filling and rivets, as well as his skull mask hanging somewhere as I wanted to show this guy bare faced and brutal, damaged and scarred wearing his wounds as a badge of office to inspire those around him, I used a bare head that I always thought was bloody terrible but in the right setting even a World Eaters rampager can be saved
so sorry too guys that I haven't been as productive this year so far but I hope you'll stay with me while I slowly get more done I hope you like this latest batch and any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks so much guys, I was going to try and get rid of the horns on the skulls but I don't feel I have the right tools and wouldn't want to ruin him! :-(
I kinda like the longer crozius on the PA Chaplain Whaley :-) it's a little different, giving him a longer sweeping style of combat options,I like to think it's what he trained with ;-)
also I painted the WE head but think I'll go with a different one I just don't like my paint job on it :-(

So pretty, it brings a tear to the eye to see such wonderful orkyness. And I too love and want to know how you are getting that glow from the gaps and the rust. I have stolen your blue/sepia technique and use it regularly now, but this glowing stuff intrigues me.

Thanks guys, I think next time I do a larger battlewagon i'll leave a few panels shinier metal and some painted in other colours not that I'm not happy with my work I just think a brother wagon would need a different look to it
I can feel the weight of 32 boyz pressing on me I know once I spend a day on them I will be pretty progressed but trying to find a solid block of time is proving really bloody hard!
as for the rust, it's not a technical paint at al it's just blazing orange paint watered down and washed over the metal parts for a light rust look and concentrated for heavier rust and between the panel lines where waters may channel down or sit, or just where it looks good

started collect a few things to spice up my Imperial fists when I get them under way
I found I had a Lysander model from when I was going to use it to make a lightning claw Terminator Captain for my Flesh Eaters the hammer and arm was broken but I was going to convert him slightly anyway so it's all good.
I did spend a little bit of money and bought Pedro Kantor as well so I've got options and he's pretty damn fisty!
So I really like to have bare heads on my characters and I was struggling to think of cool ones I can find that would be different and I found some that excited me greatly and fit in with the regal look and feel of those mighty Sons of Dorn
BUT!
Which head for what model? I am bare heading Lysander & Kantor and have 3 choices for these bad asses! so lets see what you think works best?
Head #1 Loken
Head #2 Abaddon
Head #3 MK3 Techmarine
next question, with the two characters I'll be subtly converting them both with the heads but should I leave Kantor alone apart from that? I saw a nice conversion with two powerfists and I thought I could do similar but incorporate Dorns Arrow like Marneus gauntlet? but i'm open to suggestions on this one. Lysander will get a new arm with more swing to it and I may have a play with his shield arm too?

1 for lysander, 3 for Kantor. Bad-a$$

I think Abbadon's head, sans topknot, would work great for Lysander. Then Loken's for Kantor.
I'd leave Kantor alone apart from that, he's got a gakton of presence and gravitas as it is. One of the best SM character minis, hands down.

I did notice the skin on the early shots. But looks amazing now. They look fantastic bud. Love the lens coloour you chose.
As to the head. Well I cant really comment as i have no idea who they are. However I personnaly quite like the tech head. It has a purposeful demeanor i prefer to screaming at everyone.

Fantastic stuff, they are some mean, green speed machines!
My thought process on the heads was pretty much the same as yours, with the additional factor that Abbadon's head is such a characterful sculpt that absolutely needs to be used, and I reckon it suits Lysander better than Kantor.

Bikers look good. The changes on the bikes really sets them a part for me.
For the heads, kantor and loken seem similar as the youthful leader kind of thrust into their roll early, and the head gives that vibe. The tech marine and Lysander just seem like the older veteran, stoic and scarred.

O damn you you had to go back to green skins and make me envies of your skills, those bikers have a superb look of hard ridding Borks .....
Love the colour scheme myself adds a more weathered tone to the skin which reflects the lifestyle, as for the bikes themselfs I have to say great ideas which I am so stealing, the load added to the front of the bike and the lights (noodles I gather) are perfect fantastic work once again.
Spellcrow heads are crammed full of character, but you really do bring them to life with your brush ...... Did I mention I hate you ?

Post by: Theophony
Those or s are as beautiful as orcs could possibly be.
As for my thoughts on the heads. Kantor is a survivor in power armor who is constantly moving. So I don't see him as someone who takes the time to keep his hair immaculately shaved so I went with the short hair thinking he recently got trimmed, but it's been a while. Lysander on the other hand is a terminator who sits on a ship and waits to be teleported into battle, he has time for a close shave. Plus with all the energy discharge of teleportation I think I'd be annoyed by my hair standing on end constantly and I would want to shave it. The tech marine head is too much bionic for both of them in my opinion. They are both Heros who have live through major battles and I dont recall them having bionics or server wounds.
Silly answers, but that's my thought process.

The earthy tone is definelty reflected in the prime colour, never considered taking this approach for a base colour technique.
I got a feeling those are old grenadier models but don't take my word for it, I have a couple of those some where and they look similar to the style.
Blood and Skulls I new I had seen them somewhere o well can't be right all the time LOL

Gorgon Termis with Phalanx shields. What will the represent in game, or is that a viable load out for 30k?
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Ah, cool. Pretty sure that's game-legal, Termie setups are a lot more variable in 30k and IF are one of the few Chapters that can get the proto-Storm Shields.

I got to go with the choir on Kantors head, it doesn't really do anything for me. Although with your Damo skills I could see you tattoo a fist on one side of the Mohawk and (forget their home world name) on the other side of it.
Also out of curiosity, The imperial are supposed to be the not Spanish faction right? They talk about torture (pain glove/inquisition torture) and being skilled swordsmen, but the Name of their Homeworld was Inwit, an ice planet, That makes me think of the Inuit (eskimo tribe), who as far as I know are not excellent swordsmen, but who do scrimshaw bones. Any ideas of history that I'm missing.

Post by: Paradigm
I'll second the Lysander yes Kantor maybe not comments, the swap on Ly definitely, definitely works but I tnink Kantor needs something with a thicker jaw/larger head generally, something quite chunky and rough-looking.
@Theo: Pretty sure there's elements of both going on. I definitely recall reading about some scrimshawing in the Chapter, but the knight/swordsmen thing is a big part of it as well, which spins off into the Black Templars. And the siege/defensive warfare thing in contrast to the Iron Warriors' siegebreaker/offensive warfare style. Pinning down the IFs as 'historical faction in space' is much more difficult than, say, the WS Mongols or UM Romans or SW Norse ect.

Post by: nerdfest09
Yeah don't stress guys, Kantor won't be getting that head lol :-) I was just playing around with what I had at hand! I'm pretty sure he'll get Loken's when it arrives, Lysander was a lucky break as that head came with the warders and I hadn't really thought of it until last night! but it works great!

Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks guys, Kantors pack does indeed have a very shallow line on it that shows up with the wash, hopefully I can remedy that next session and the head indeed does appear to be large but it's the same as a normal head except for the expression and the fact it's sitting in Blu- Tac
bad news, I don't like the Gorgons now so they've been stopped. put in a box. and shipped to someone else.
Good news, I am getting some hammernators to run with Lysander instead so any 3rd party additions to Termie armour you know of tell me!
and really, how could you NOT love Daisy-May? there is indeed mischief there behind the eyes! it's apparently fun to take underwear from the bathroom through the house and out the back door and it's also fun to pull the cord on the N64 controller making the system fall and shut off 1.3 seconds from finishing 1st in Rainbow Road! but I forgave her...... so now I have 4 furry children to keep me busy! 3 Samoyeds and one good dog
I base coated the colours on Kantor this morning so hopefully I should see him done this week along with some basic work on LittleH's band of guys

Ha I am sure your only using the "I dislike now" as an excuse to create yet another unit
I feel your pain with the N64, we had a flop eared dwarf rabbit ( which in no stretch of the imagination was a dwarf anything ) we used to let happily hop around the room, on one such occasion I was blissfully playing golden eye last level for the seventeenth time with better results when all of a sudden the controller goes unresponsive ?????
At this point Bailey the rabbit goes happily bouncing past, so in sheer desperation I try to figure out what th hell has happened, on closer inspection after checking the controller was connected properly I noticed that there was some damage to the wire, yes the little bugger had decided to have a little chew on the way past ............

The new family member looks super cute! I also love Lysander's new head. Something about Pedro's head doesn't quite work for me, though. It's not the paint - I just can't quite put my finger on it... maybe it looks a bit too big? Or maybe it's the blob of blu-tac causing it to look too big? I'm really not certain...
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Cheers Az, I think it's because it's sitting high with the Blu Tac? or maybe the angle makes him look bigger? shouldn't be long until I can fit it in properly once I get some armour finished on him :-) I tried the eyes today and ended up making a smudgy mess which I very nearly cried over! :-(
