Reading the comics for "Arkham Knight"(which lead in to the game),
Spoiler:
Joker is very much dead dead dead.
That should probably be spoilered (which I've added to my quote)...
In any event, I'm pretty confident it's not him. I know I wasn't the only one feeling a bit fatigued with a certain character after Origins, and I suspect that the developers know that the fans would like to see someone new in the spotlight. I've no clue who it is (could be a Scarecrow fear-induced illusion, for all I know), but I'm confident that it's not him.

Reading the tie-in comic to Mortal Kombat X, another WB game, the book might as well not exist for all it has to do (or not do) with the finished game, so I wouldn't trust that.
True, yes, I don't think they'd go to this much trouble to say "Totally not the Joker!" only to turn around and go "LOL! He was totally the Joker all along!".
Doing that would just piss everyone off, and I say this as someone who loved the Joker reveal in Arkham Origins.

They released this information in response to backlash from fans regarding the $40 USD cost of the season pass when the item was listed. No details have been released yet as to how the DLC will actually be released, aside from the content being spread out over "a six month period".
I thought Stephanie Brown was just Robin and Spoiler? I don't remember her being Batgirl.
Is Barbara Gordon confirmed as being Oracle again? It's possible that they've pulled her out of the tower as they've done in the comic books, and have Alfred operating as mission control this time around.

She's confirmed as Oracle, but the specific details of the Batgirl DLC is that it is a "prequel".
Whether that means a prequel to the series before Barbara becomes Oracle or to Arkham Knight? Nobody knows for sure yet. Warner Brothers/Rocksteady said they will release more details as we get closer to release.
Cassandra Cain would be the most interesting option, imo, and my personal choice if Barbara Gordon (who is the "prime" Batgirl, so to speak) is out. But she's got a distinctive costume - particularly the mask - and the Batgirl in the image isn't wearing her outfit.
Regardless of who she turns out to be, I hope she's playable within the game proper, and not just a stand-alone chapter. And if she turns out to be Barbara Gordon, then I hope they have a rational reason for her to be both acting as Oracle, and running around in the cape and cowl.
I've been reading that it's a standalone DLC type thing. - It's also mentioned to be a prequel. Although it's unclear just how much of a prequel it is.
So, it could be Barbara (though in that case, I thought the red hair would be more distinctive), if it's an early prequel.
Option 1: Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress
Option 2: Cassandra Cain
or Option 3: Stephanie Brown
It's not Cain, as it's not HORRIBLY red hair.
It looks brown, so I think it's meant to be Steph Brown. (Heh.)
But Steph is Blonde.

Steph becomes Batgirl because Cass leaves (on Bruce's orders), she becomes the last Batgirl before the New 52 reboot, which makes her back into Spoiler. I liked her run as Batgirl, she was very similar to Babs and that made their interactions pretty good.
Look Rocksteady. We get it. The game has a Batmobile. We've known about that since you announced it. It's nothing new, and as super-excited for it as you are we're all just waiting to play the game. Getting your voice actors to wax romantic about the fething Batmobile is just laughable. STOP!
Yorick wrote: As I know many people have been asking about the details and content of Season Pass and if or when people will get the content. I hope the following makes things clear:
Throughout the 6 months of additional Batman: Arkham Knight content, Premium and Season Pass owners will receive all in-game content that is offered through various retail pre-order incentives. This includes the Harley Quinn and Red Hood Story Packs, as well as any Batmobile or Booster Pack that was available as early bonuses for pre-order of the game. For those who did not receive the content with their game, these items will become available when their respective exclusivity windows expire in August/September.
The tl;dr version of this is: Premium Edition & Season Pass owners will receive all retail exclusive DLC after their respective early access periods expire.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion, please let me know if I can help answer anything else on the subject.
Gamespot wrote:There is another, more surprising obstacle which you must overcome if you wish to retain your ownership of Gotham's skies, however: the Batmobile. For the first time in this series, you can leap into the iconic vehicle and zoom down the streets, drifting around tight turns and pursuing key vehicles as they speed away. The driving itself is slick and satisfying, as long as you can overlook Rocksteady's tendency to wrest away camera control to show you some dramatic sight or another. Yet there's no beating the incredible rush of using your line launcher to fling yourself through the sky--and it's worth mentioning that taking to the air is usually faster than settling behind the wheel. As a result, Arkham Knight is constantly trying to justify the Batmobile's presence, forcing it upon you at nearly every opportunity.
Particularly in the latter third of the story, you're frequently forced to take part in vehicular battles against remotely manned drones. When you first engage in this kind of combat, which turns the Batmobile into an agile tank, it's a delight. You strafe from side to side, sliding the vehicle into safe areas between the visible lines that indicate the path of incoming enemy rockets. All the while, you fire your cannons at the drones and use small fire to eliminate missiles fired upon you; the dark sky lights up during these battles, giving vehicular combat an initial spark, and making you the director of a spectacularly violent fireworks display.
Gameplay utilizes Batman's excellent detective skills. His orphan skills go underutilized, however.
But in spite of the upgrades the Batmobile earns over time--EMP blasts, the ability to hack enemy drones, and so forth--the Batmobile battles never become more interesting, just more monotonous, as they seem to go on forever. The story's final hours succumb to a series of same-ish battles that play out more or less like the last, lending an air of tedium to what should be the game's most poignant surprises. The Batmobile is also the centerpiece of a number of mediocre boss encounters, all manner of puzzles, boring cat-and-mouse games with superpowered tanks, and even some of the Riddler's many optional challenges scattered across the city. Don't be surprised should you end up muttering to yourself, "Too. Much. Batmobile."
I am soon done with my raid, and then I'll go play it.
Hype!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I should've seen this coming, but Arkham Knight butchered my computer. It runs Crysis 3 with everything maxed, so I had hopes, but Arkham Knight dispatched the poor thing quite handily and it lags even with everything on low.
Which is a great shame - I am certainly not in a position to spend any more money on a computer right now.
Apparently the game is locked to 30 frames per second even on PC, but can be unlocked by changing the INI settings. The generally crappy performance, on the other hand, presumably needs patching to be fixed.
Sounds like another good reason never to pre-order games, especially ones that have a review blackout right up to the release date.
No Nvidia stuff on - Average 70fps.
All Nvidia stuff on - Average 44fps.
All Nvidia stuff on except the smoke effects - 60fps.
All Nvidia stuff on except smoke and light shafts - 64fps.
Seems you can just brute force this thing into working if you have enough DDR5.
I just watched Jim Sterling's first impressions video, and I can't say I like what I see. It would have been nice to have a game about being Batman in Gotham, with civilians and stuff like that, but Rocksteady seems to have given us Batman In A Tank instead.

My own first impression:
Graphics, combat, scale, fluidity, smoothness and general feel are superb. They build on the foundation of City/Origins and turn all the good stuff to to 11. The new moves and finishes are awesome, and the whole game is very, very open. The addition of cars and such to the streets certainly help the city feel more alive.
BUT
The batmobile might get a bit overdone. Mechanically and aesthetically it's fine, but at least the early phases seem to be intent on getting it in in as many ways as possible. I do hope it starts to focus on Batman a bit more later on.
In the door game in hand ready to play but the first day patch is going to take 7 hours to download at it's current rate guess I'll be waiting until tomorrow then :(
"We're aware that some users are reporting performance issues with the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight. This is something that Rocksteady takes very seriously. We are working closely with our external PC development partner to make sure these issues get resolved as quickly as possible. We'll update this thread when we've got more info to share."
Well, first suggestion: Fire your external PC development partner and get someone who knows what the feth they're doing.
The game runs fine for me (occasional hitching) because I can brute force it, but the fact that so many people are having problems just shows that this game wasn't tested enough.
What is it with game developers these days?! So glad I didn't pre-order this game (That and the absurd £60 price tag on Steam-GTFO).
I have already been burned by pre-ordering Mortal Kombat X on Steam- took ages for that mess to get sorted (it still crashes every time I play multiplayer matches)
As I mentioned above, the combat system is flawless. It keeps the fluidity from previous games but adds in quite a bit more variety. You can now counter with a throw to knock down a group of thugs, use the environment for instant takedowns even in combat (jamming heads into junction boxes, sliding kicks down ventilation shafts, dropping light fittings on their heads ect) and finally, Batman has learnt to punch people that address laying down! took him a while, but it now means its easier to keep combos going even when everyone is stunned or prone. The sound effects in combat are also a lot more varied, you can hear bones breaking, joints popping ect.
The biggest addition to Predator Encounters, aside from much larger areas to use, is the new Fear takedown. Get behind a group of enemies without being detected and instead of taking ages just choking one guy you can chain takedowns to get 3 (initially, you can upgrade it) guys in the space of a second. All thanks to Iron-man style performance enhancing armour!
Gliding/grappling are both faster now, and you can reach much higher altitudes than before. You get the grapnel accelerator from the start, and the dive bomb shockwave, and can now go straight from gliding to takedowns by dropping through windows/skylights which is awesome. Apparently these is also a way to use gadgets while gliding, but I haven't unlocked that yet.
Can't comment too much on the Detective bits as I've only done one so far, but it was a little different to the old ones; this one involved scanning through 4 screens of CCTV footage to find evidence, rather than the same old (reconstruct the crime scene and follow the red line' method.
All in all, it's a cracking game. The Batmobile might be a little forced in places (a problem that could have been solved with 1 glue grenade on Origins instead required a complex series of events involving the Batmobile, a crane, a machine gun and a winch) but for the 'proper' bits it features in, it's awesome. Actual high speed car chases in this tank/car are very, very fun.
WB/Rocksteady have had the PC version of the game pulled from sale whilst they figure out what the feth went wrong with this one.
In the meantime, TB has done his port report:
I'm in a similar situation to him. I don't have SSDs and I'm running two TITANS, not TITAN X's, but the game runs well enough to play for me (though I will give no SLI a try tonight and see if that improves things, as insane as that sounds). My jaw dropped at the freezing during the Batmobile footage. That's awesome.
This is perhaps worse than Unity's release, and I'm just one of the lucky ones who can still play the game.
So I will echo TB's statement at the end: Please people, stop pre-ordering video games.
I liked the bit at the end, where it mentioned that the studio that ported to PC is also guilty of the Arkham: Origins port problems. Why would they do that with their penultimate game in the series, knowing the history? I bet they were the lowest bidder...
Is it just me or was the identity of Jason Todd as the the Arkham Knight rather obvious? He'd always been on high on my list of possible alter egos, but as soon as the Joker vision taunted Bats with visions of Jason's 'death' there was never any doubt on my mind it was going to be him.
I almost hoped that Rocksteady where going to surprise me and all the Jason foreshadowing was was actually just going to a clever bit of distraction, but no.

Spoiler:
Possibly. I was certain from his dialogue that it was going to be a former Robin/Nightwing (constant references to how he knows Bruce's secrets, and calling him 'old man', but with my limited Batman knowledge I was thinking Damien Wayne was the likely candidate.
In other news, finished the main story last night. Pretty damn good, and overall I'm satisfied.
Spoiler:
Kind of annoyed they backtracked on Oracle's suicide, as that was a great scene first time round, but on the other hand the resolution of the whole thing is good enough. The metaphysical Joker rampage was a bit odd, but again done well.
Finished the main story and almost all of the "Most Wanted"(haven't finished Riddler; because Riddler is booooring!) side missions.
I'm pretty happy with the game. I feel a bit letdown concerning the identity of the Arkham Knight, but I do like the alterations they made to the overall story arc surrounding the character.
I still have three left over mines and the Riddler trophies to find (did all the Catwoman-related stuff already).
I want the full ending, so I'm going to 100% it.
I was kinda disappointed that...
Spoiler:
The Azreal plot kinda went nowhere. All that build up, plus the stuff from the last game, and then the conclusion is... he just kinda wanders off. What a waste!
Same goes for the Hush plotline. Very well done in the last game and it amounts to maybe a couple of minutes of gameplay here - literally one button press.
Two-Face was disappointing as well, because it was so damned easy. There was some challenge to the Penguin stuff as you had to get to the vehicle, track it, sneak in and then do a bunch of fighting. Two-Face was just an easy predator section where you could do whatever and no one could hear you, and then a regular predator section on the same map.
Some of the ground checkpoints were tough. Needed the Drone disruptor upgrade for a few of them. The watch-tower puzzles were cool though. I loved figuring them out.
I'm annoyed that I didn't get the freeze grenades until after I did the final bit. I didn't know that you could get them the first time you go to the movie studios.

I agree with almost all of that, being at a similar place in the game (just Riddler trophies, a couple of Firemen and some checkpoints to go (and their new boss...)). The one thing that has bugged me slightly is the lack of a proper boss brawl or even real fight.
Spoiler:
Firefly and Man-bat are just a case of repeating the same chases 4 times (whereas the Firefly fight on Origins was one of the best)
Dent and the final Knight battle are just simple predator missions, and Pyg didn't really qualify as a boss.
Too. Many. Tank. Battles. The one with the Knight on the surface was decent, almost a Predator Encounter with the Batmobile, but the underground one got a bit wearing, and from the dialogue snatches it sounds like Deathstroke is going to be another tank-on-tank fight (again annoying, as he was epic on Origins). I was hoping for a proper brawl with both of them.
Penguin's ones were good, largely because the Nightwing team up battles are great fun, and for the first time I actually enjoyed the main Riddler bits (suitably cerebral without being infuriating), so I can't complain there. It just seems that there were a few wasted opportunities in favour of 'use the Batmobile!!!'
Still, it's a great game, and the first time I've ever made a point of absolutely going for 100% completion! I need the proper ending, damn it! (Although I suspect it might be largely interchangeable with the final scenes of Dark Knight Rises! )
Any word yet on what villains are showing up in the DLC? Of the expansions listed, that's the only one I'm likely to bother with.
Fully agree with the last 2 posts the villians are just under utilised 1 or 2 seem to appear just to tie up lose ends. It's an enjoyable game overall but never really measures up to the others. The Batmobile is over used there's some great puzzles it's used for but it just seems to be forced in everywhere even if it's not needed. I only realised that I only used the line launcher twice in the entire game so far as the Batmobile ejector can do similar.
I've finished everything but the Riddler section I have 150 left to get and I'll persevere to get the proper ending but some have me stumped right now so I just marked them and moved on. I finished up the mines last night I've been trying for 3 days on some of them with little luck I kept getting swamped near the end but it just sort of clicked last night.
I'll probably try for the platinum trophy once I finish up with the Riddler but I know one of the hidden ones is only unlocked in new game+ and I'm not sure how motivated I'll be to play it over again.
For those of you who bought the season pass, Batgirl's DLC "A Matter of Family" arrives on July 14th for season pass holders and July 21st for anyone who wants to purchase it separately.
It will be $6.99 in NA or £5.80 in the UK.
I watched a Let's Play of Arkham City and it changed my mind about not buying it. I watched a Let's Play of Arkham Knight and it convinced me I was right to not buy it. From what I've heard the core gameplay is better than ever - I especially like the look of the tag team combat, and they have a good scene using the improved investigation from Arkham Origins - but there's less of it now that Mandatory Batmobile Sections are in.
A less destructive Batmobile that isn't shoehorned into the game everywhere, a more traditional Gotham City rather than one that has been completely abandoned to the supervillains and the gangs and the ability to free roam with characters apart from Batman would have been more in line with the Arkham game I would be looking for.
Spoiler:
And no Joker. Head!Joker has some good lines, but I'd gladly sacrifice them if it meant not treating the character as some kind of elemental force he shouldn't be.
Agreed! There are aspects that could have been better (mostly the boss fights, or lack thereof), but this is the best game I've played in a long time!
Regarding the spoiler:
Spoiler:
I don't think they're using the Joker as an 'elemental force' as such. Batman has Joker's blood in him from Arkham City, so would have been undergoing the same transformation eventually as the other Infected (hence why he has a spare cell in the batcave, it's for him once he's beaten Scarecrow). The fear gas just brought it out a little more prominently, to the point where it becomes an actual mental manifestation. It's not like he's immortal or anything.
Finished off the last of the Riddler trophies last night to get the 100% and full ending I'm not sure it was entirely worth the effort but it's done now.
Spoiler for the 100% complete ending.
Spoiler:
the scene with the couple with the kid was an interesting nod to the robbery and deaths of the Waynes it was a sort of a full circle thing. The fiery Batman descending on the robbers right at the end is left very ambiguous and almost looks like a fear toxin induced nightmare. I guess it gives them an option to continue on at some point if they so wish even after the Knightfall protocol kills off Bruce Wayne/Batman at least in the eyes of the residents of Gotham. The question remains was it Bruce returned again as the criminal element had lost all fear of reprisals after years of no Batman on the scene, was it someone else taking up the Batman role or is it just a hallucination? we may never know
H.B.M.C. wrote: Why were you right not to buy it? The game is fantastic.
The Batmobile's a big one. The combat isn't as strong mechanically: offense and defense are largely decoupled from one another since aiming and firing has no interaction with strafing and dodging unless you drive behind a wall, while the regular Arkham combat forces you to consider how or if to press your attack to avoid being counterattacked, sucker punched or shot. And Batman's not about barrelling around smashing into parked cars, concrete pillars and pedestrians and shooting tanks which are only unmanned to excuse shooting them.

I'll be the first to say that the game has too much Batmobile combat, but that's not enough to bring the whole game or even the Batmobile as a concept down. The Batmobile is fantastic and an organic aspect of the game - another tool on Batman's utility belt. And the game's dodging mechanics are simple. You don't counter-attack in a car.
AlexHolker wrote: And Batman's not about barrelling around smashing into parked cars, concrete pillars and pedestrians and shooting tanks which are only unmanned to excuse shooting them.
And you don't have to do that. The most "barrelling" you do are during the APC and Firefly missions, which can be skipped, and you can spend most of the game gliding around like you did in City.
You're putting too much emphasis on the car (like Rocksteady did in all their marketing). Tank combat gets dull by the 10th time you do it, but it's a relatively minor part of the game compared to everything else.
angelofvengeance wrote: So er... do we know if Arkham Knight for PC has returned to Steam yet or are Rocksteady still desperately trying to fix it?
I just finished the game yesterday. I'd say an adequate way to describe it, is I love the game and hate the story. There was way too much Batmobile, and the no actual boss fights was a huge downer (hopefully they fix that with DLC).
Spoiler:
Seriously, they dropped the ball on the story. They had all these great villains, and who did they utilize? Scarecrow was insanely badass (what little time he had on screen). Harley was almost completely absent. Penguin and Two-Face relegated to small parts of side missions only. No Firefly or Man-bat boss fights (and repetitive side missions), Hush and Deacon have one side mission each. As said, all that foreshadowing in City about Azrael, and then he does nothing.
Not to mention, Jason Todd was Arkham Knight? What happened to your balls, Rocksteady? What happened to "he's a completely new character, guys!" That was so stupid, and full of plot holes, not to mention. Where was Croc? Still no Killer Moth or Great White?
I've been working through the Riddler missions with my friend. Believe me, it's as if the real Riddler designed some of them... we did them all in three or four days, but working alone may take longer and some of the hidden items seem nearly impossible to find without going online.
They REALLY do not hold your hand in this game -- it's the first game I've seen in years that actually challenges your brain. Most people simply will not have the stamina to solve all the riddles. It's absolutely maddening.

While they are infuriating at times, I am finding these the most enjoyable set of Riddler challenges. They're not easy, but at the same time they are (mostly) doable, a test of your brain rather than just fiendishly difficult nastiness.
I think he means the [] riddles with the written clue and you have to find something in the area like a picture or object and then scan it most of the time you can figure out what your looking for but trying to find it takes a long time even when an informant gives you the location. I ended up googling 3 or 4 as I lost patience with them, Selina's collar was particularly difficult to find!
I was not saying Killer Moth, Croc, and Great White's absences were plot holes, I was just expressing my disappointment that they weren't present. The plot hole remark was not connected to them, though I see the confusion.
Jason Todd being the Knight is a plot hole in my mind, because it seems to completely and utterly contradicts what Todd (as Red Hood) is, a vigilante who ultimately fights for the same side as Batman, but just doesn't agree with his non-lethal approach (feel free to correct me if I' m wrong, but that was my understanding of Red Hood). I was very disappointed, and it utterly was far too "safe" of an approach. It honestly ruined the character of Arkham Knight for me. That, and I take issue with how angsty the Knight became as you progressed through the story.
Ultimately, the game was incredibly fun, I just think the writing was a ghost of what was achieved in Asylum and City. I know it's not by the same people, but I never played Origins, so I can't comment on that. My complaints about the story are ultimately minor, this is a Batman game, and thus, feeling like the Batman universe is what's most important. So too much car and no boss fights are my complaints. The gross under-utilization of the villains included is a shame, but not a deal breaker. John Noble did an incredible job as Scarecrow.

Okay, so. There are several important things to note in regards to important plot elements:
Spoiler:
Jason Todd's Red Hood, as a "vigilante who ultimately fights for the same side as Batman" is a very...loose understanding of the character. In the main universe--he died, and was resurrected via a Lazarus Pit. The Lazarus Pit completely unhinged his psyche and drove him crazy. I highly suggest the animated film "Under the Red Hood" if you're interested in the character.
In Arkham Knight, there are a few key parts that you come across which explain why Todd is doing what he's doing. Imagine that you were taken in and trained by the Batman. Imagine that after The Joker has done something particularly nasty("unnecessary surgery" on a kindergarten class of kids, killing them and stitching the remains together in new and "hilarious" ways, forcing the parents to fight over the bloody corpses of their children"), you go on your own and deactivate your comms to get The Joker.
Then you realize it's a trap and The Joker has taken you to torture and break as a "joke" on Batman. You're beaten, broken, branded as part of The Joker gang.
Flash forward to years later when you've been rotting in a cell in Arkham Asylum as part of "The Joker Gang", forgotten by everyone but The Joker. Who makes a point of taunting you that Batman NEVER EVEN CAME LOOKING FOR YOU!
"Sometimes villain, but most often antihero" is the way my comic friends describe Red Hood, and what I had looked into, aside from one comic arc, seemed very appropriate. I still think this implementation is damned weak writing. That, and how after a stern talking to, he's suddenly protecting Batman again. I get the "why" he became Arkham Knight, I just don't agree with that direction of the last part of the "Knight" story
I fully agree with what I saw someone has said about Arkham Knight. There are two main stories in Knight, there's Knight's story, and Scarecrow's story. Scarecrow's is pretty awesome, and Knight's is pretty weak. Opinions, ho!
Edit: As for plot holes,
Spoiler:
When/how did he escape the Asylum? Where did he get all the money for the entire militia and their billion tanks? Where did the military training come from? How did Joker fake Todd's death?
I was not saying Killer Moth, Croc, and Great White's absences were plot holes, I was just expressing my disappointment that they weren't present. The plot hole remark was not connected to them, though I see the confusion.
Jason Todd being the Knight is a plot hole in my mind, because it seems to completely and utterly contradicts what Todd (as Red Hood) is, a vigilante who ultimately fights for the same side as Batman, but just doesn't agree with his non-lethal approach...
That's him in the comics though, not in the Arkham Games. The Arkham games aren't the comics, and vice versa. The Arkham Games are honestly closer to a darker more realistic version of the old animated series.
The Fragile Breath wrote: Ultimately, the game was incredibly fun, I just think the writing was a ghost of what was achieved in Asylum and City.
A lot of these points I find difficult to disagree with, but for me they didn't ruin my enjoyment of the game.
Were Penguin, Two-Face and Harley under used? Yes, especially Two-Face. Azrael as well. Dude's plotline looked epic in the last game... and just kinda stops without a satisfying conclusion. Hush was just them tying loose ends, and suffered as a result (really Rocksteady, a whole side plot that is solved with literally the press of one button? C'mon!).
Was the car used too often? Yes. I love the Batmobile, and I think it's a great addition to the game, but the game could have done with about 1/2 the bomb disposal missions, and one less big tank fight would have helped. I did like the stealth tank bits, as they were a lot of fun and broke up the regular tank combat, but after you've dealt with the Arkham Knight, having to finish the militia plotline by having a tank fight against
Spoiler:
Deathstroke
was really lame.
The lack of boss fights? Arkham games have never really done good boss fights. Asylum had Harley in a tower yelling at you, Whack-a-Croc, and rinse/repeat Ivy and Joker fights. City? Hammer and Sickle weren't really bosses, just brutes. Ra's wasn't all that special. Grundy and Clayface were basically the same fight with some minor differences. Only Penguin and Mr. Freeze had some originality to them. This game wasn't that much different.
Honestly Origins has the best boss fights. The Deathstroke fight, the Lady Shiva fight, the Bane fight (the first one, the second one is an exercise in frustration, but that could be more my problem than the game's) and especially the fight with the Electrocutioner ( ) are just great. You should play Origins. It reuses a lot of concepts, the fighting in the game is slightly off (like 95% perfect, compared to the 100% of the other games), and the Riddler bits feel perfunctory/superfluous (and don't really go anywhere like the Azreal plot in Knight), but it's a really fun game. The Firefly section is amazing, the plot is good, especially how it ties into Asylum, and it has the best soundtrack of all four games.
If you haven't got to the studios yet, then you haven't got all the Riddler trophies. Many of the games 240-ish riddles (from actual riddles, to trophies, to breakable objects, etc.) don't show up until the end of the main plot. They get added as the game goes on.
I've "cleared" Bleake Island of trophies twice now during my second play through.
I've been to the studios plenty of times. - I'm literally around 88%-ish through the game. I just gather from the interwebs that the game won't let me get the last riddle there until a specific story point.
That's him in the comics though, not in the Arkham Games. The Arkham games aren't the comics, and vice versa. The Arkham Games are honestly closer to a darker more realistic version of the old animated series.
Fair enough, I suppose. I don't know, it doesn't make it bother me any less, you know?
A lot of these points I find difficult to disagree with, but for me they didn't ruin my enjoyment of the game.
Oh, I agree. I think I gave the impression that I hated this game, which is absolutely not true. I loved the game, I just took issue with a lot of the writing and decisions, but at the end of the day, it still may be the most fun new game I've played this year.
It makes me happy to hear that it's a common gripe that they under-utilized almost every single villain they had, because that means they likely won't make that same mistake again. I always meant to play Origins, but my fiancee insisted on buying it and not letting me buy it, and she decided it was a good idea to wait to buy it until late May when I worked all the time and didn't have any chance to play it. So I'm going to finish up the side things that seem fun in Knight, and then play Origins! I'm excited, because I love Firefly and Deathstroke, I'm excited to see their fights.
Anyone else excited for the Batgirl DLC this Tuesday? Hopefully it's longer than the Harley/Red Hood story packs.
I'm waiting for reviews of the Batgirl DLC; if the word is there's a decent amount of content then I'll go for it, but I won't bother if there's not enough to make it worth it I won't bother.
Definitely give Origins a go, personally I think it's easily as good as City if not better. Combat isn't quite as fluid, but the plot is good, some set piece battles are absolutely awesome (Firefly) and while there's no Hamill, there's some excellent Joker stuff!
The Fragile Breath wrote: Anyone else excited for the Batgirl DLC this Tuesday? Hopefully it's longer than the Harley/Red Hood story packs.
I'd love to get it... but it ain't coming out on my platform because WB are a bunch'a witches.
Of course, the trailer did make me laugh, cause I wondered what was the purpose of the big oil rig off shore, to the left of Arkham city, with the giant Ferris Wheel on it. Now we know!
Paradigm wrote: Definitely give Origins a go, personally I think it's easily as good as City if not better. Combat isn't quite as fluid, but the plot is good, some set piece battles are absolutely awesome (Firefly) and while there's no Hamill, there's some excellent Joker stuff!
Definitely check out Origins if you haven't. It's two big weaknesses were general fatigue with a certain character (and I can't elaborate here without causing a *massive* plot spoiler; playing it now should be fine, though), and the game-wrecking bugs that affected the game at release (problems with freezes - and not the DLC boss - and other issues; I had to redo the last Bane fight twice due to an oddball bug).
The Mr. Freeze DLC is fun too.
Speaking of bugs, the fact that this was even more bug-ridden than Origins is troubling.
Apparently the same company that did the Origins pc port did the Arkham Knight port. Pure conjecture and wild guessing from me, but it wouldn't surprise me if the reason that Rocksteady / Warner Brothers were so quick to offer refunds for Arkham Knight on PC was if they had put some pretty darn hefty penalty clauses in the contract if the porters screwed up again..
Arkham Origins wasn't a great game - and there was something about the combat that was really 'off' for me. But what it did do REALLY well and the reason I would recommend the game to anyone is that it had truly some incredibly spectacular set pieces.
It's just a pity there wasn't more of them. - There was one point where I was thinking 'oh awesome, I'm only at the halfway point of the game' - It turns out it was just a tiny diversion before the finale.
Oh, look, it's just been announced that due to all the hard work they're (now) putting in to making this game work on the PC, the DLC will be delayed for the PC. At least WB is being so apologetic about doing what they should have done before release.
I wonder how this all would have turned out of Steam had not introduced its refund system yet.
Cliff's Notes on the bad:
Level design that fails to make sense for either the player or NPCs.
Removal of cancelling into counterattacks and enemy reach being less legible. Poorly scaled art assets.
More QTE-y boss fights and winning in cutscenes instead of in gameplay.
And the good:
The investigation that requires going back and forth over a VR simulation of events (and rightfully stolen for one section of Arkham Knight).
A better Gotham City than in Arkham City.
And that's Arkham Knight finished, except for the 'Harley missions.'
And come to think of it, that probably is what bugged me about Arkham Origins. - The Arkham combat is one of my few real 'skills' in any computer games ever (though still never pulled off a perfect freeflow with every ability), but my combos were constantly being interrupted by a random punch in the back of the head.
Lots of spoiler-ey question and comments time now that I've finished the game.
Spoiler:
Were there any real 'choices' in the game? Or were they all 'fake' choices?
If you're the policeman at the start, what happens if you do shoot someone?
Can Batman actually attack the 'real' Scarecrow on Stagg's airship?
What happens if Azrael picks up the sword and attacks Bruce, as opposed to just leaving? - This did seem very unresolved. I think it would have helped if maybe the 100% ending did make it explicit, say, that Azrael was now Batman... Apparently there's DLC set after the ending though, so....
I've not played the 'red hood' edition, but I can't help but think that the very existence of it was a dead giveaway.
I also think the game made a bit of a booboo by only introducing Jason Todd in this one. Even if I hadn't accidentally spoilered myself, the only thing that had really made an argument against him being the Knight was 'Jason Todd hadn't existed in the games so far...' Then, of course, shortly after that, he was there in hallucinogenic form. Kinda sealed the deal.
I don't know what I was expecting with the ending, but I figured a 100% ending would have some sort of Mass Effect 2 ish type thing where you had a succession of your heroes and allies turning up to help you through a series of ending situations. - Though it was suitable that the Arkham Knight helped at the end.
Kinda sad there were no hints in the game about Talia being alive. - I almost expected there to be a subplot about her and Damien around, since that's the story they're pushing right now in the animated movies. - I might have missed something though, there was hints that Ra's Al Ghul was still live and kicking in one of the 'Arkham City stories.'
Other things, the game needed more Matt Mercer Robin.
And yeah, I've gotta agree, too much batmobile, though I liked some of the Riddler puzzles involving it. - Gotta say though, I found a lot of the Arkham City ones to be harder than this
So... Rocksteady's next project...
Spoiler:
It's gotta be a Superman game, right? Not only was Lexcorp everywhere in the game, but you even get a phone call from Luthor himself and near the end of the game, the thugs started talking about 'the only thing missing tonight is that flying freak from Metropolis showing up.'
I definitely think there might be another DC game in the works from Rocksteady. The references to Lex/Supes/Arrow/Canary and a whole ton of dialogue suggest to me that they're going for something a little bigger next...
Thug dialogue:
Spoiler:
'So want now?'
'I think we leave Gotham for a while.'
'Yeah, but it's been good to us.'
'All we need now is that freak from metropolis to fly in!'
'Come on, pay up. You said Batman was an alien from a dead planet!'
'But... I'm sure I've seen that somewhere!'
There's a phone message from Superman of all people that says Batman's needed in Metropolis as well.
Could just be wishful thinking, but what I wouldn't give for an open-world, multi-character Justice League game from game in the style of Arkham!
20% of Riddler Trophies done, this could take a while!

And it isn't WB offering the refunds, either. It's Steam offering the refunds, because Steam just started a refund policy about a month ago. Now that it is actually hurting WB's profits they suddenly care about making the PC version work. In case people have forgotten, when Origins came out with all of its PC problems, WB decided they didn't care and prioritized DLC before problem fixing.
I agree with my fiancee, Rocksteady should really do a Sirens of Gotham game (Harley, Ivy, Catwoman, for those who don't know) or a Suicide Squad game. I hate Superman, so I'm going to be bummed if their next series is him. Speaking of the random messages to your phone, I guess one of them was Batwoman, that's pretty neat.
Spoiler:
One thing that really bothered me is that Troy Baker voiced Tim Drake in City, and in this game, he voices Todd while Mercer voices Drake. Grr. I hate when they change voice actors (except for John Noble, he was fantastic), especially when the person is still voicing someone else in the game!
Have I not bitched incessantly about that here? That's not me being snarky (a rare moment!) I just legitimately don't know if I've posted my grumbling frustration over that. The new Oracle is okay, but much weaker than the previous Oracle.
I like Mike's voice, but it doesn't fit Jim Gordon, not one bit.
Kanluwen wrote: If Rocksteady does any kind of game for DC next, I want a Green Arrow game.
Would be awesome, especially if it were based on TV rather than comic Arrow (and kept the bones of the Arkham mechanics). I'd really like to see a multi-character game, though, as that could be a lot more fun/replayable than all-Batman-all-the-time! Not that I have anything against Batman, but a game where you could switch between him and various other characters at will rather than specific scenes would be so awesome.

Or, just give me a whole game as Nightwing!
If they were to do one, I'd rather they not go with the TV show.
Part of what has made the Arkham games so successful is that they are their own universe, with some divergences from the comics/film.
Paradigm wrote: Yeah, I meant stylistically rather than an actual game of the series. More 'Batman with a Bow' than '21st Century Pantomime Robin Hood', basically.
I'd suggest you pick up a couple of the New 52 runs of "Green Arrow". Grab the trade paperback volumes "The Midas Touch"(volume 1), "Triple Threat"(volume 2), and "Harrow"(volume 3) to get an idea as to where they'd likely go with the character.
Never heard of him until I kicked his ass last night. He's up there with Zasz as most disturbing Bat-villians, mainly as they are "normal" dudes that could exist in real life.

The new 52 Green Arrow is the worst of a bad bunch. I liked him during Blackest Night. When he became a less mary sue version of batman.
Anyone played the DLC yet? Have to say the initial reviews aren't encouraging, most seem to say that there's only about an hour of content and that beyond super-hacking, Batgirl plays no different to Batman. The promise of a Joker-Harley-Robin-Batgirl brawl is intriguing, but not enough to get me to buy it.
My fiancee and I were kind of tempted to get the season pass, but, Rocksteady? You need to offer more than a few hour-long add-ons and some skins to make it worth $40. I know that we don't know what all is in the season pass, yet, but that's the problem.
Supposedly, this is everything in the Season Pass:
Batgirl: A Matter of Family
An all new prequel story expansion in an entirely new location where you play as Batgirl for the very first time in the Arkham series.
The Season of Infamy
Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.
Digging through the files shows that the villains are Killer Croc, Mad Hatter, Black Mask, Mister Freeze, Ra's Al Ghul, and Prometheus.
Gotham City Stories
Play as Batman’s key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.
Legendary Batmobiles with Themed Tracks
Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman’s 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile’s specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.
Crimefighter Challenge Maps
Engage in a series of new challenge maps utilizing the unique play styles of Batman and his allies.
Files show playable Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Red Hood, Azrael, and Joker. Joker specifically is referenced in "Million Dollar Mayhem", where you "cause as much mayhem as possible within 5 minutes and send the bill to Wayne Enterprises."
Character Skins

Pre-Order Bonus Content
All in-game content that is offered through various retail pre-order incentives. This includes the Harley Quinn and Red Hood Story Packs, as well as any Batmobile or Booster Pack that was available as early bonuses for pre-order of the game. For those who did not receive the content with their game, these items will become available when their respective exclusivity windows expire in August/September.
Some of this was known("Season of Infamy", for example was namedropped by the devs as was the fact that preorder DLC would be part of the Season Pass once the exclusivity wore off).
Have to say, I might actually get the Gotham City Stories, Season of Infamy and Challenge maps ones, sounds like there's more repeatability/content to them than the 1-hour campaign of Matter of Family.
Ah I see. I have the Quinn one but haven't played it yet. That description seems like it refers to more than just the two, though, so I'm hoping there's more to it.

Honestly, I don't think we'll see eye to eye on this in any way, shape, or form but I'm pretty okay with hour long DLCs. I don't expect a full Arkham Knight length campaign for each character. An hour sounds about right.
I haven't played Batgirl's "A Matter of Family" yet and I'm avoiding any videos that can potentially spoil stuff, as I mentioned I won't be getting the Season Pass until later this week, but an hour long DLC is about on par with Arkham City/Origins' story DLCs barring the Challenge modes provided someone really felt motivated to complete it.
Got it with my ps4, wouldn't have otherwise. Kinda fun,
I'm going through the whOle game as adam wests batman, and it makes it unintentionally hilarious.

Yeah, if we end up with hour long stints as, say, Nightwing, Azreal and Robin then I'll be happy so long as the cost isn't astronomical, especially if they are (relatively) open and therefore replayable.
Here's the thing, though. That list tells us what to expect, but doesn't tell us what we're getting for our money, you know?
"New missions", "play as Batman's allies" They could easily release one mission each where you drive the Batmobile into Croc to capture him, and do a stealth takedown on each other villain, then have two packs about the length of Harley/Red Hood "story" packs and say it fulfilled what they told us.
At least with MK's Kombat Pack, they said "You get four characters and five skin packs, with each skin pack having skins for three characters" and then they actually told us the characters we were getting before launch. DLC is not something we should be kept in the dark about, when you've got my sixty dollars (double that, actually. The fiancee and I went for the collector's edition) and then you want me to give you another forty, you at least should tell me exactly what I'm getting for the extra forty.

How many of the villain side stories were single missions?
As far as I recall, there was just one.

To be fair, the "files showing playable Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Red Hood, Azrael, and Joker" are tied to the Crimefighter Challenge maps.
So in regards to Gotham Stories we don't know what/how things are going to be done. Right now to give an example, Red Hood's is listed as an "exclusive" in the game but do you really think it won't be changed to read as something else when it goes live?

Hush and Blackfire. Firefly and Two-Face were basically the same mission three times over, but you actually won the third time
I didn't say they were likely to be one mission each, I'm being cynical, and saying they could do it and it would still be in line with what was promised. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the season pass, clearly you're going to and I'm not trying to talk anyone out of it. All I'm saying is I need to know exactly what my forty dollars is buying before they get that forty dollars. Give me numbers.
How many missions? Are they decent in length and variety? How many stories as Batman's allies? I just don't want to spend forty dollars on three hours worth of content, and I think most people could agree with me on that.

Same here. Glad I didn't get a refund because I love the game.
